Speaker 1 (00:00):
Ex president of the Sons of Ben Matt Gantastic AX
head Capo Adam Booth, ex player and forever a Union
legend Sebastian Latou. These may be exes, but they're the
experts when it comes to the Philadelphia Union. This is
exes in the you.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Welcome back, everybody. What an exciting week in the Union verse.
X is in the you, and we are going to
review last week's game, this week's game. It's Union soccer
back in twenty twenty five. So I am joined as
always by ex Capo Adam Booth and Union legend Sebastian
the two guys, Episode twenty seven Weak Ones in the can.
(00:44):
What are we thinking here? Everybody feeling good?
Speaker 3 (00:47):
Jordon Solid looked felt fine watching the team. I actually
just did my sped up recap viewing of it again
right before we did this broadcast, and you know, some thoughts,
but I mean for first time out, you know, in
syllabus week, I'm okay, you.
Speaker 4 (01:05):
Know, yeah, yeah, Seba, yeah, I'm doing great too. You
know the one way there is bags this week in
each other? Yeah, you know, it's something big plus a
w you know, so it cannot be better. And I
cannot wait to go back to all the people criticizing.
You know from the beginnings that the team is going
too sick, and you know we got the win.
Speaker 5 (01:25):
So please come back, guys and be nice. Okay, come
back and be nice.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
That's that's that's a tall order for both. But let's
get to the news. As we saw, Ty got a
new number. He's now a number nine. And I guess
after in Orlando, well deserved Bruno twenty two year old
striker three point two million transfer fee, which is a
club record, and I've heard that it could go up
(01:51):
to closer to four million with the incentives. So that's
the news, and I wanted to go in real quick
before we review Orlando, Adam the new kits you want
to go New Kits will review Orlando and then we'll
get into the preview of the next game.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
Oh, do not threaten me with a good time sailor.
All right, let's do this, all right. So I actually
have some thoughts here as the residentt kit designer, I've
designed two professional sport kits myself for a frisbee team.
Check us out. I have some thoughts on the new Kids,
which I believe are an homage to an older kit,
(02:30):
which is actually not that old of a kit if
you really want to think about it. But look, I
saw a lot of fabulous kids come out of MLS
this year. I think Adidas, as we say in the
Deep South, put their foot in it this particular time around.
I saw a lot of good ones. Portland particularly caught
my eye.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Was very very well.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
I enjoyed Lafc's, I enjoyed the Galaxies as well. I
think Seattle knocked it out of the park. You know,
there was a lot of quality kits where previously Adidas
has let me down.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
You know.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
I think sebel will remember probably the twenty thirteen twenty
fourteen era when everyone just had a white kit, Like
everyone had a white kit and.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
I Sully believe or whatever that thing.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
Yeah, yeah, just for the entire year, every team in
MLS had white kits, and which is very awkward. So
I'm happy that Adida said, what if we asked opinions
of others and you know, got some got an eclectic
group to get this together. Specifics on the Union kit,
I think the lightning is a nice touch. I kind
of like it. It's a little cartoony, but I kind
(03:36):
of like the cartoonish of it. We could talk about
the sponsor a little bit. Look, it's not Bimbo, and
I think that's a big thing for a lot of
people that is not Beimbo. But I'm not Thomas's biggest
fan either. I feel like we could possibly figure out
one of the brands under the Beambo umbrella.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
You don't like an English muffin.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
I'm a big I Look, I am a thirty four
going to be thirty five year old man who actively
eats English muffins to this day, like I will go
into the store and buy them. So I am for
the Thomas's English Muffins. I just don't necessarily believe it
works with the esthetic that we were trying to pull off.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
Do you think it's just sponsored by game guy named Thomas?
Speaker 3 (04:20):
It could be. I just think Artisano might have hit here.
I don't know, just a thought there. But I think
the real kicker of this is a lot of clubs
get their iconic, you know, primary look. You know Manchester
United with the Red and the White, you know all
these clubs that have this beautiful look for your primary look.
(04:42):
I love the Union holding on to the secondary look
of the baby blue and the yellow shorts. I don't
know how long you can do it. I don't know
how many iterations of it you can do. But if
you were to permanently make their second kit a version
of baby blue and yellow shorts every single time, I
just loved the I love looking at it. I loved
(05:03):
watching it in Orlando. I just think it's such a
striking color combination. And I'm like, milk that until you
can anymore well, and.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
I'll be critical and then I want to get Sebastian's
take because a French fashion b player. But my take,
I have to see it in person before I really
judge it. But I thought it was a mashup of
the old Lightning Kit and the Simpsons Cloud Kit, and
I was hoping for something really different. And let's be honest,
I think MLS dot Com didn't even have it let
(05:36):
me see. Yeah, I don't even think they had it
with the top ten for the Kid.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
Which is rude.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
Yeah, but it was.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
It was one of the ten best of this best.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
I think we got to get Adam on the Union's
kit committee. I know former president Ryan Bross is on it.
I don't know who else is, but I don't know why, Adam,
you haven't been listed.
Speaker 3 (06:02):
That I got a resume. If I want to see,
you know, a sneak preview, the Union or the new
Philadelphia Phoenix kits will be coming out shortly after this
podcast drops.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
So well, well listen, Sebastian and I'll be waiting for
our jersey reveal like they send to everybody else. Because
that's the other thing. I saw the Union sent out
to a bunch of podcasters and some guys don't even
have podcasts anymore, and they got the Union kit. I
didn't get one. Did you or Seba get a kit
from these guys?
Speaker 5 (06:31):
I got mine, you got yours. But it's because I'm
an ex player, you.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
Know, i'mout to say, Yeah, Club Legends Sibil two did
to get a jersey, right, yeah, you're well.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Since you've seen it in person, what are your thoughts.
Speaker 4 (06:46):
I didn't see any seen in the books yet. I
just got into that it's in the box.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
But I gotta do an Instagram video where it never happened.
Speaker 4 (06:57):
Yes, but I will, but no, I mean it's I
think it's going to grow on me. It's the Yellow
and the Blue, a fleet similar than last year, but
maybe a little bit better. But I think, like Adam said,
like the if you want to be different in this league,
I think those two colors are great to make, you know,
people know that it's you. You know, it's it's a union,
(07:18):
especially when they play away.
Speaker 5 (07:21):
For me, like the.
Speaker 4 (07:21):
Best third or second kid we had was the betterle
Hemp still one, you know, the black, you know, the
black one, like this was still my favorite as a
second one because when we did the first one and
if you remember the first one, but it was very
hard to even know which team we were because you know,
he started with kind of a type.
Speaker 5 (07:42):
Of maroon yellow gold, you know, and when.
Speaker 4 (07:45):
You sweat into the jersey, it was darker and darker,
so you don't even know who which team we were.
Speaker 5 (07:51):
But they do a better job now.
Speaker 4 (07:52):
I think it's it's great, you know for the team
now to have those kind of type of yellow. I
think it's the best yellow for the team. And the
blue is getting better too. But yeah, it's a it's
it's just growing. I think it's still a working process
for me. But it's nice to see them winning with
that jerlsey means it's it's good luck.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
Yeah, And as a player does that matter a lot,
like what your uniform looks like. I know, like when
I played any kind of sport high school, college, it
was like it mattered what what you looked at. It
was like that look good, feel good, play good kind
of thing.
Speaker 5 (08:25):
But yeah, a little bit from Gussy does. But not
for everybody. I think it's for me.
Speaker 4 (08:30):
It was more to make sure that, okay, I know
which one is my teammate and which one is the
oversing team, you know, because if it's very like some
kids are close, you know, in cut off, so you
can sometimes it might be a bit hard to uh
to figure it out.
Speaker 5 (08:43):
But that's what like this blue and yellow. Nobody else got.
Speaker 4 (08:46):
It, so it's kind of nice to you know, be
very defound than anybody else.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing a person so I
can judge it, because right now I like it, I
don't know if I love it, so maybe it'll grow
on me.
Speaker 3 (08:57):
My my biggest no takeaway Portland. They crushed that that
was that was a home run. Everything down to the
usage of the green, the usage of the of the
rings of the tree on it to signify the logs,
down to and their sponsor of tillmok Tillamook as a
as a sponsor just worked so well into the jersey.
(09:19):
I was like, all right, Portland, Portland, Portland Adidas. I
don't know if they do this intentionally because it's Nike country,
but they really try hard to make Portland look good
in Adida's kids every year. I just I find that fascinating.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
Adidas has got like an office out there, too.
Speaker 3 (09:35):
Do they okay? Because I know as a South Carolinian,
I try to claim Adidas because they're big plants in Spartanburg.
But you know, if if they have plants out in Oregon,
that makes more sense. But like that was the Timbers
have always kind of looked good, and they've been looking
real good last couple of seasons.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
Yeah, now that was kit talk and that could have
been brought to you by Icarus, but he hasn't cut
us a check yet, So that that's segments unsponsored. Let's
get into Orlando Union win. I mean, like that was Adam.
Can we say bt a just like the Eagles did
(10:14):
to the Chiefs. Was that was that a belt to
the ass kind of win for two? Or or are
we just getting excited for for no reason?
Speaker 3 (10:22):
Possibly both could be a Little Common and Little Colin B.
I think Orlando is definitely feeling something right now. I'm
sure they're They're Twitter accounts and the offices down there
next to Universal Studios are definitely feeling some type of
way about how that went down for their home opener
because I believe, uh, I believe they'll be one of
the better teams in MLS this year. I had some
(10:43):
expectations for them. I don't necessarily believe this derails this
or puts the Union on a faster track either way.
But I will say to come out there and to
play a very complete game, that you took advantage of
the opportunities presented in front of you, which was paramount.
You know, you had to deal with a lot of
(11:06):
energy coming from Orlando very early, a lot of tests
to Andre Blake very early. But you took advantage of
when the when they had the miscues. You know, you
took advantage of beautiful balls by you know, Quinn Sullivan
put into the position Todd Burribo was able to get
himself a brace on on really good solid number nine goals,
(11:30):
like goals that you hope your number nine gets, like
the crashing the nets that tappens, you know, the you know,
by any means necessary goals that used to be a
signature of this team once upon a time. I'm pretty
sure CJ. Sapong made an entire career on that exact
type of goal. So, you know, I liked what I
saw offensively enough, I saw, I mean, the service from
(11:53):
Quinn made almost not miss Jack mcclinn for five seconds.
I was like, oh, oh, you got that too in
your I forgot.
Speaker 2 (12:01):
Yeah, well we'll get into that. And like you said,
Beribo had the brace gas tag in You're ago scored.
So Saba, is this the return of the Big Three?
Is this the Big three in fashion scoring the way
they did a couple of years ago.
Speaker 5 (12:15):
I don't know. I know we will see it just
a game one, you know, but yeah, we get excited.
But it's I.
Speaker 4 (12:20):
Mean, it's definitely a lot of positive you know in
this game, but it's still a lot of stuff too
that I think the team need to get better out,
especially you know, defensively.
Speaker 5 (12:28):
You know, we were very clinic coaling from the gold.
Speaker 4 (12:30):
I think we've got four chances and you know, putting
the back of the net. I don't think we had
like as much changes as a you know, Orlando had
we got lucky you know a little bit, I think
defensively for like fifteen twenty minutes, you know, in the
second half, because when it was like four two, you
can see Orland do pushing. But it's a bit of
change I think we saw from last year. I mean
(12:50):
I think last year maybe the game we'd have finished
at four four. But this year kind of like this
team stick together, you know. We we got the lugs
that you know, you create for your own as well.
Speaker 5 (13:00):
So I kind of really enjoy like what they.
Speaker 4 (13:03):
Offer, let's say defensively, you.
Speaker 5 (13:07):
Know, for the way they were pressing.
Speaker 4 (13:08):
You know, you can see really like what Bradley Kane
is trying to do, even away from home, you know,
and it seems like Orlando, you kind of score too good,
I think from me, like out of a mistake from them,
you know, with the back press of the team winning
the bull in or high and quickly you know, get
the goal and then you know, we I was surprised
about the fact that we were scoring on you know,
(13:30):
possession a little bit and and be able to know
to put the back of the net as well. So
it was it was a lot of you know, good thing,
a lot of different. Look, you know, you saw cats
by playing more on the right, you know at the beginning,
queen on the left, you know. With with Kay Wagner,
I think Westfield his first game did amazing, you know,
jobs as a ride back, you know, really with the
pressure and be able to show what he did in
(13:52):
an assist Makanya where we never saw and.
Speaker 6 (13:55):
You know people are saying, no, it was not you know,
good to play did I think excellent job as well,
you know for his first game under like I think
for me, Orlando offense probably one of the best in
the league too.
Speaker 5 (14:08):
So there's a lot of good stuff.
Speaker 4 (14:10):
But then defensively you can see, you know what we
could maybe get better hard and the ball wheelers.
Speaker 5 (14:16):
And stuff like that. So exciting, you know, the world.
Speaker 4 (14:19):
I think I can see like the potential of this
team and all those young guys. We can really keep
progressing and get better. So now the front three, you
know great, I think, you know, with the signing of
Bruno Damiani, it just shows that. Okay, now it's maybe
difficult to make choices for the coach or just for
the power, you know, if they keep all scoring it's like, Okay,
(14:40):
who am I playing?
Speaker 5 (14:41):
You know, and it's it's great. I think it's a
perfect combination for.
Speaker 4 (14:46):
Pressure inside the team to keep playing the best player
and you know you have somebody who is hungry behind
you to take.
Speaker 5 (14:53):
Your place if you don't do the job.
Speaker 4 (14:54):
So it's it's definitely healthy matchliers in the past couple
of years and I you know, there's a keep building
on this. But now you know, we play home Cincinnati
when those the best team, so we'll see what happened.
Speaker 2 (15:06):
Yeah, and like you said, the defense was definitely shaky
in the beginning of the match, but they shorted up
Andre Blake did Andre Blake things again, you know, So
there was you know, i'd say two glaring defensive mistakes
and maybe more, but it was it was a little shaky,
but for me and I agree, Frankie Westfield didn't look
(15:27):
like that was his first MLS game. And shout out
to the Westfield family because I think his younger brother
won or advanced in the Catholic League finals. I don't
know if you saw that at him, but I did not.
But good for the Yeah, Westfields had a nice had
a nice weekend and but my My man of the
match actually was Quinn Sullivan. I thought he just had
an underrated I don't know if it was underrated, but
(15:50):
I just thought he had a great game that nobody
really because he didn't score and all that. I thought
he played excellent and I think he's found a home
in that position and hopefully he doesn't get moved around
and we can see really big things out of him.
And I'm shot. It's his fifth year with the Union
and he's twenty years old, twenty one.
Speaker 3 (16:10):
Years old, and you know the thing about it is
and with the defense, you know, you had only three
dudes out there in your defense that were regular starters
for the Union last year, you know, and that was
Blake Glesnezen Bobler. That was it. So it's gonna take
some growing paints. It's gonna take some moments for these
guys that come together. I wasn't. I was a little disappointed,
especially on the second goal, about the amount of ball
(16:32):
watching I saw, Yeah, it was, you know, Orlando hits
the post twice and everyone's just waiting for either the
ball to go out or Andre to do something. And
even Andre seemed to get upset about the fact that
it seemed like most of his defenders were ball watching
at that moment, and as a former goalie, that would
have pissed me off too. So I get that they're
gonna take a moment, they're gonna come together, but there
(16:53):
are the bones of something that could definitely be something different.
And look, I think when we talk about this, and
we'll talk about you know, transfer marketing and all that
stuff a little bit more, but when you see how
the Union kind of closed out in the market, at
least in the short term going into they might do
still some free agent stuff and blah blah blah, but
for the most part, we're done. It was a lot
(17:15):
of shoring up and a lot of depth. Which was
the biggest issue that I think we had in the
last couple of seasons. Wasn't so much that we were
lacking top tier first team talent. The talent was there,
but what was the drop off we had when we
went to substitutions, What was the drop off we had
when we went to backup plans? We were again until
the Tye Barribo experience began, having to rely on Chris
(17:37):
Sullivan or Chris Donovan to be your first guy off
the bench offensively was a struggle for US. So I
think the fact that you didn't even play some of
your reinforcement the guys that had come in yet, like
you Strow are processing some more reinforcements. You're going to
have a happy problem hopefully. Yet striker, you're gonna have
a happy problem hopefully in your middle in midfield. And
(17:58):
that's something that the Union can better fit for, especially
if they're going to go deep into competitions this year.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
Well, if if Andre stays healthy, Gleasness looks really good,
Glassness looks like he lost some weight, came in better shape,
like maybe maybe there was a wake up call from
last year. I know he's healthier. So you know, if
if they can say but for Sebah, can they can
this team keep this pace up with with all of
(18:24):
the pressing and the transition, I mean they were it
was controlled chaos on the field. Can they go through
a whole season US Open Cup playing this way and
not running out of gas? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (18:34):
I think though it's you know, it's better to just sprint,
you know, for twenty yards and get the bull bags
and have a sixty year to run back and you know,
then do another sixty yel to attack. I think it's
a it's a different type of effort. But I think
the way and the team you know, got built you know,
this year, I think we have the player for it.
(18:57):
It's if you know, like the team, I think keep
scoring goal and have the ball, you know, have the field.
I think we can score a lot of goals. It's
just how can we be now better defensively when you
know we push like it was great to see Westfield
and Wagner you know, getting assists against you know right
away you see both our fullback when you're away playing high.
(19:18):
So it's you're going to see a lot of playing high,
you know, trying to win the ball back when you
lose it, you know, up the field with maybe glassness
playing high you know mcanya to put more pressure and
not you know let the other team like turn and
counter you. But yeah, I don't think it's a physically
and physical problem for the team, knowing that we have
(19:39):
a bit less games this year, not Japanese Cup, you know,
so a little bit better to start. Maybe you will
see in the summer time, you know, when the the
start maybe to get warm and hot and you need
maybe some guys you know, need a little rest, but
I think we, like Adam said, I think there's now
more confidence in the coaching staff to try other players
(20:00):
if they are ready. And at the end of the day,
it's kind of like what Frankie Westfield you know, did
this weekend. It's like we are going to probably to
give the chance to some new guys in a team
when we need them, and after it's to them to
show what they can do and when they play, can
they get a positive result for the team.
Speaker 5 (20:16):
It's it's all what it's all about.
Speaker 4 (20:18):
So I think it's yeah, we I think we don't
have a lot of injury right now. Maybe one you know,
still with Pleamenovitch, you know, maybe not one hundred percent,
but when it's coming back, it's another and a great piece.
Speaker 5 (20:31):
We have a you know, as a as a center
of act.
Speaker 2 (20:34):
Yeah, and I'm glad you brought that up with the
latest rosters constructed, because I wanted to get into this.
It was earnth season. We always talk about how we season.
This was earn season and let's just say the Union
verse wasn't very happy with what they saw during the
off season. I think we can say that's fair. People
online where we're not impressed with any of the moves.
(20:56):
But I mean, after we see what Ernt's brought in,
how these guys performed, the academy guys coming up, the
young guys playing, I mean, is it still ernth we trust?
Speaker 3 (21:07):
I think at this point you have to look at
the resume as opposed to just look at the feeling.
And by far, if you throw out last year, and
I mean you can't, but if you were to, you're
still coming off the greatest era in this club's history.
It's not a long history, but you were consistently at
the top, a top four to five team in the
(21:28):
Eastern Conference, competing for titles, multiple titles in multiple like
in the Champions League, for multiple seasons, and you constructed
a roster through a bunch of guys that were not
known before they got onto the pitch and became legends
of this club almost instantly. The Kai Bodners of the world,
the Julian Kranz's of the world. You know, these guys
(21:51):
who came in on Martinez, Jose Martinez, you know, guys
that were not necessarily were nowhere near household names that
you're just kind of to a classical American soccer fan
could look like you're just throwing darts at a board
half the time, but they turn into commodities and products,
you know, selling the you know, selling the Paxton and
(22:18):
his brother. I do not know how I'm blanking on
the ass. Yeah that was Aronson's names for so long.
Speaker 2 (22:25):
Yeah, they're gone and forgotten by you.
Speaker 3 (22:27):
But that's what I'm saying. But here's the They've been
gone for so long, I've forgotten about them. I moved
onto the Sullivan family and there's another like a probably
bloodline behind them, And I'm like, but what I'm saying
is a lot of these things I'm not putting all
of it on Earth's. A lot of this is the
talent on the players. A lot of this is construction.
But I'm saying, you know, until you have a season
where Andre Blake is fully healthy and your midfield and
(22:51):
all your guys have come in, and then the Union
are also terrible, it's hard for me to judge anything
but the amount of success this club has haden, which
is a lot. I mean, you add the MLS Cup
in twenty twenty two, all of these conversations are completely different.
And that's how small the Razor the margins for all
of this stuff. If you add the MLS Cup in
(23:13):
twenty and twenty two, Earns looks like one of the
best gms in the history of the MLS. For what
he can't do and the amount of talent he could
squeeze from perverb like how much blood he was getting
from proverbial stones. You could say he's won the best
of all time. But because he doesn't have the trophy
to hang his hat on, there's gonna be questions.
Speaker 2 (23:32):
Yeah, yeah, but Ernest, what are your thoughts of the moves?
Speaker 5 (23:37):
No?
Speaker 4 (23:37):
I mean, you know, guys, we all know, and we
talked about it in the past two years. Jim and
Ernst never stopped collaborating that.
Speaker 5 (23:44):
Jim was not even like.
Speaker 4 (23:46):
Trying to help the way he wanted to build a team.
He was no corroboration, no nothing. Now on the final
code that we stopped speaking now again the same language,
and that can go back to what the base or
three or a goo. Maybe he came in and tried
to do with now a new player and everything. So
you are when there is no as a team, it's
(24:08):
it's not just the player, you know, he starts with
the coaching staff.
Speaker 5 (24:12):
He start with the people, you know, the manager of
the team.
Speaker 4 (24:15):
If everybody playing the same game and the same way,
it goes well, you know, but if there is some
negativity and friction and not understanding or you know, not
being on the.
Speaker 5 (24:27):
Same page, it doesn't work. And especially when it's at
the top.
Speaker 4 (24:30):
And the past three years it was Arms and Gym,
you know, not releasing high too high about different thing.
But now I think Arms, you know, find somebody that
you know, he trusts, and they you know, whatever he's
asking to do or he wants to do. Bradley, you know,
see the same way. So I think that's why you're
going to see a different type of product now on
(24:52):
the field. But you know, they just have been working
on it in the past, you know, four or five weeks,
you know, in the come back on peason.
Speaker 5 (25:00):
So I really think it's going to.
Speaker 4 (25:01):
Get better and hopefully you know, we we keep you know,
winning and see all the progress of a lot of
young guys that the Aaronson were you know, a part
of it at the beginning when you came and he
started with you know a lot of guys that you
know make play for this team.
Speaker 5 (25:17):
And maybe this year we are going to be surprised about.
Speaker 4 (25:19):
You know, the mccanyas the LOOKI who just comes this,
the Daniani, you know, whoever you know have a chance
to play and of course takes a chance to play
and play well and unbress. You know, the Telladatia culture.
I think you're going to have a good season.
Speaker 2 (25:35):
Yeah, and Adam, don't forget because I thought you might
want to incorporate this into a chair soon. But we
got and Indiana, Inniana from Saint Louis to show up
the midfield. I mean, I think it's a boxer box
the midfield and that was that was actually an underrated move.
I think that that's going to jump right in and
(25:56):
help shore up the midfield.
Speaker 3 (25:57):
Well, the ultimate issue we always have is Philadelphia has
the feelings of a large market in terms of how
we treat our other teams, how the whole lexicon of
American sports. Philadelphia is a massive market and soccer we
haven't hit that threshold, but us as a fan base
really wants to feel that we are, so we don't
(26:20):
necessary We get seduced by the idea of cities that
we find smaller maybe not as important getting larger sum
to transfer fees, spending eight to nine to ten to
thirteen million dollars on particular players. But it just seems
to me that there's a lot of clubs that made
(26:40):
zero moves. There's a lot of clubs that made minimal moves.
There's a lot of clubs that the only thing that
they did was sell the way that the Union quietly
added to the franchise with. Yes, you subtracted McGlenn from
the situation, but guys like Jose was already going out.
All these guys were already on the way out before
the chance or windows even last year. You know, there
was already conversations about that. To be honest with you,
(27:03):
I'm still kind of shot Kai Wagner still here, but hey,
I mean, we'll see how long he will be. But
it all boils down to their turnover on This team
seems to be consistently solid, and we keep seeming to
find diamonds in the proverbial rough. It's hard for me
to bet against you know, what's going.
Speaker 5 (27:24):
On right now?
Speaker 3 (27:25):
And again one game four too whatever, throw it out.
But people wanted signings. There were signings. There were signings
that were made to have immediate impact as well as
signings for your future. People wanted to play the homegrowns.
They signed four to five homegrowns in the off season,
saying welcome to the first team. And yes, they sent
Pierre out to the white Caps. But even so it's
(27:48):
saying like we both trust what we have. We do
trust this academy that we've been telling you to trust
in because we're bringing them along and we're going to
make the moves at one. Don't derail what we're trying
to do academy wise, because it's the Jim Tony in
front of Ryan Howard principle. Yes, you can have a
great player in front of the guy, but is that
(28:10):
going to steyn me your long term growth by having
an individual like that. I look at a guy like
Olivia Dreux, one of my favorite players of all time.
Is his presence in LA going to helpers, going to
styn me. It could go either way, you know, it
could be in It could go either way. But that's
when I look at these large signings. These guys got
to play. If you sign a guy for thirteen million dollars,
(28:32):
especially in manjor league soccer, this guy better play, you know,
or the fan base is going to be like, what's
going on? So when you have these kind of moves,
you can look at a guy like Miguel Odain and
be like, look, you are one of the biggest signings
we ever had. But if you ain't hitting my guy,
and if the rotation is looking different, I don't have
to feel this immense pressure to now play you every
game if if your contract is what it is, it's
(28:55):
a balance. But I think that's what we're kind of
looking at here, and that's an abandoned The Union have
that a lot of their teams don't right now.
Speaker 2 (29:03):
Yeah, well, I mean we're, like I said, one game man,
But so far it looks good. So I'm gonna say initially,
good off season by Ernest, but we'll find out as
the season goes on. I'll wrap up Union news, we'll
get into some league stuff, and then we will preview Cincinnati.
But the last piece of Union news that I have, Adam,
it's exciting. July fourth weekend. You could be in Nashville
(29:28):
with mister Sebastian Latoo, just letting you know. It's uh
bachelorette parties, tractor rides, rooftop decks watching the fourth of July.
It's everything you want and more. So yeah, Sebastian Latoo
will be in Nashville with the Philly sports strips. So
the team just sent out the email. I don't know
if you got it yet, but yeah, the trip's going on.
So some one more thing. What do you think of Nashville.
(29:50):
You haven't been on Broadway before?
Speaker 5 (29:52):
Yeah, I never had a day in Nashville, so it's
pretty pretty excited.
Speaker 4 (29:55):
And then you know what for the beautiful game to
watch the fans, but no excited to see who's going
to come and then to pull the team.
Speaker 2 (30:03):
Yeah. Yeah, And I can't wait because I haven't been
in the new stadium the last time I was in Nashville.
They're still playing in Toyota, whatever the heck it is.
So I'm excited to get down there and see the
stadium and then see Sebastian interact with everybody. And I
just want to see his reaction to just what Broadway
looks like.
Speaker 5 (30:21):
It looked.
Speaker 2 (30:22):
It'll remind you Wildwood Boardwalk, but with country and western,
where you know, cowboy hats and cowboy boots.
Speaker 3 (30:28):
But are you going to sell it?
Speaker 2 (30:31):
Listen, it's a show to see. I'm in Vegas right now,
the people watching is fantastic, and Nashville is right up
there with people watching. It's it's a good time had
by all.
Speaker 3 (30:40):
Well coming back to Vegas from the next F one race.
That's what I'm trying to get over there. Good luck.
Speaker 2 (30:47):
Union News has done the guys around the league. I mean,
let's just go the power rankings. Orlando City was fourteen,
New York City was fifteen, the Union were sixteen. Now
less power rankings. Now Cincinnati's number one and the Union
of twelve. Gold dot Com has got Union at thirteen
(31:07):
and since the number two. Any thoughts on the power rankings.
I mean, I don't really put much stock in the
power rankings, but I like seeing where the Union kind
of moves up and down because I don't even know
if they were in the top twenty when the season began.
Speaker 3 (31:24):
I mean, you know, I'll come in, they exist, and
they're cute whatever.
Speaker 2 (31:31):
I like.
Speaker 3 (31:31):
I like hearing people lax poetically well about my team.
I'm never going to stop about that, but ultimately, like
one like, what are we doing?
Speaker 2 (31:40):
Yeah? And as we all know, and this is a
little one, but we know every the off season was crazy.
Coming up to the first week. I mean Cincinnati, you know,
got a vander for twelve million, and that's what you're
talking about, Adam, when people freak outs or like how
Cincinnati a small team doing twelve million dollars signings? You know,
Orlando City and Marco from from Croatia, Toronto signed a
(32:05):
top league Danish player. Like, there was a lot of
signings going on. So this is going to be a
really interesting season with all the moves to see who
had just first, and you know the staff is I
was going through MLLs dot com going crazy on how
they were ranking, like Miami's number one, Atlanta is number two,
(32:25):
s Sea, Cincinnati's the third team, and like we were
saying with the off season, it was just crazy in bonkers.
But now season tier and we got to figure out
what's going on. So I guess the last bit of
news I want to say, because we forgot all about it, Adam,
the Sun's a bet of a new president. Did you
see that? Just new leadership with the sons of Ben.
(32:49):
I think they're doing a lot cleanup where they did
a lot clean up all that. I'm kind of far
behind on that, but we'll get back into with now
the home openers starting this week we'll get into the
supporters and what they're doing and any charities and that
kind of stuffy. They had helped kick Hunger and I
missed it. I don't know if you guys end up
going to it or not. No, so.
Speaker 3 (33:11):
Preparing for a child here, Matthew, I apologize.
Speaker 2 (33:15):
Don't apologize that the children are our future at them.
Speaker 3 (33:18):
So this is what they keep telling me.
Speaker 2 (33:20):
Yeah, so listen, we got Cincinnati coming up, guys. Sebastian,
you're doing the radio correct.
Speaker 4 (33:27):
Yes, I'll be on the not this time with day
because he's away, but the JP that I came back,
so it's wow me as this weekend. Yeah, exciting to
to see him back at sub Park Man.
Speaker 2 (33:41):
I think I'm gonna I mean, I'm in Vegas. I
know I was going to tune in on my iPad,
but I might have to get the ninety seven to
five fanatic feed just to hear seven JP back, you
know that'll.
Speaker 5 (33:54):
Yeah, so excited to do to him.
Speaker 4 (33:57):
And we took to him and I work for as
these and yeah, he's looking for up to the game.
Speaker 2 (34:03):
Yeah, so Noonan is back. I always feel like Seinfeld
when I hear Pat Noonan's I'm like Noonin, but Noonan
is back with I mean arguably one of the best squads.
I mean, their new signing, what does he have? Kevin
Donkey's got how many goals now in two matches three?
Speaker 3 (34:25):
It's it's look they there was jokes a couple of
years ago about what Cincinnati was about to become because
they were like, they got deep pockets, they want to
build a big stadium. You know, they're they're ready to
make a splash. They're ready to sign the people. They
got all bright, they got noon In there. You know,
they've taken from the best.
Speaker 2 (34:45):
They took one of our accounts.
Speaker 3 (34:47):
They took away, they took eighteen percent of our roster
from twenty nineteen. So you know, they and they said,
we're going to go all out because we can control
Cincinnati as a city. Like they're like, we could be
Cincinnati's entire club outside the Bengals, and they're leaning in
and I and I respect it. I think it's good
(35:07):
for the league. I think it's good for uh, you know,
Ohio as a whole. You know, I think it's in
Kentucky by proxy. Like I think, uh, Cincinnati has a
scary squad that put a bad jersey though, I'm not
gonna lie. Their kid's kind of weak. This year, I
was not. I wasn't the big biggest fan of it,
but you know, them Lions are scary. But I definitely
(35:29):
believe the battles that we have with Cincinnati are always
fun and always interesting. So and I don't suspect this
will be any less.
Speaker 2 (35:38):
Yeah, I want to get Sebastians because I know he's
already for for the radio broadcast. Yeah, I mean, like,
did you guys see Donkey's header in the opener.
Speaker 4 (35:49):
Yes, but you have to say sorry, Yeah, he's from
He's from Togo, grew up in France, trying France.
Speaker 5 (35:58):
But yeah, then.
Speaker 4 (36:01):
It's yeah, I mean he's so good, like right now
when he came, whatever he brought. You know, he's scoring
every game I think he played for Cincinnati so far.
So it's a guy to watch for the Union defense.
You know, I think he can really hold the ball.
It's fast, he can shoot, he can you know pass,
He's not even a selfish striker. So yeah, it's it's
gonna be a big task for the defense and definitely
(36:24):
the number one guy to watch for the Union. Then
you have Evan there, you know, come from Parkland. Maybe
you know as well, see how quick he you know,
kind of get the chemistry between his new teammates and
have an impact for his team. So two, you know,
big extensive player for since Anty playing on top and
then I think, you know, since he now I would say,
(36:46):
still a big squad, you know, probably on the top ten.
Speaker 5 (36:49):
Of the list.
Speaker 4 (36:49):
But defensively, you know, I feel like it's it's getting old,
you know, for for them, like the guys, you know,
there's not a lot of turnaround in their defense.
Speaker 5 (36:58):
It's not maybe a new player as much.
Speaker 4 (37:01):
So I will say maybe where we can you know,
surprise them and you know, run over their mistake and
if they are to be too casual and believe you know,
they are still who they were.
Speaker 5 (37:12):
So yeah, it's gonna be interesting.
Speaker 4 (37:14):
But definitely you're looking for up to see how we
do against giving the ink because he's a he will
definitely be out there in the top scove this season
in the mens.
Speaker 2 (37:25):
No, Cincinnati's firepower is crazy, Like you said, the defense
might be you know, the only weakness they have and
what I could see is they don't have a lot
of depth. But in game number two, that's not going
to mean anything. You know, maybe in the playoffs that
means something. But yeah, this is I mean, I thought
Orlando was going to be a test, but Cincinnati, truly
it's going to be a test. Adam, what were you
(37:45):
thinking about this matchup?
Speaker 3 (37:47):
Look, it's gonna be tough. There's there's nothing about it.
You know, you're still trying to figure out your sea legs.
You know. I think we can point out the fact
if you want to go back to the Orlando game,
he gave up twenty two shots against Orlando, know, and
you know nine of them got on frame. Andre had
to make five really good saves. So you're not necessarily
(38:08):
you're going to definitely have to try to share up
or shore up your your defensive prowess and against an
attacker like this, that's a scary proposition. But I think
what Seba said is really important and really kind of
the foundation of what the Union did roster construction wise,
is Yes, you put a lot of stuck and firepower
(38:28):
into your midfield and into your attack your defense. It
looks a little suspect, and it looks it can be
possibly vulnerable. The Union took advantage of it last year
in situations when you thought the Union probably shouldn't be
playing these games with Cincinnati at all, but they found
ways of Typerribo and others to score at home. You know,
the Union took a dip last year, but they were
(38:49):
still one of the greater home clubs in Major League
Soccer over the past five to ten years. So I
have a feeling, you know, with this energy coming off
of you know, a good win down in Universal Studios,
I think they have a shot to do something here.
It's going to be a dogfight, no doubt, and it's
going to be a very good game. But you know,
(39:09):
I think that neither side should be taken either one
lightly as well.
Speaker 2 (39:14):
And I'm looking at is it going to be fifty
nine degrees in Philadelphia?
Speaker 3 (39:19):
Yeah, but you know kickoff is going to be like
forty five, so it's gonna be like balmy you know beats.
Speaker 2 (39:24):
Last week it was like seventeen degrees, So I think
I think it's gonna be There's no reason not to
show up a super park.
Speaker 5 (39:30):
Is that?
Speaker 3 (39:30):
Oh yeah, Okay, I'm a baby shower for this.
Speaker 2 (39:34):
Am I wrong? Stubb? Is there's no reason for people not.
Speaker 4 (39:36):
No reason is the best guys, the openet is like
it's what they are looking for.
Speaker 5 (39:42):
You know.
Speaker 4 (39:42):
It's pretty much like besides the playoff, it's usually like, okay,
I want to be starting for the home because it's
I don't know, you know, you have all those kind
of feelings you are musing since now three months four
months for them, and it's kind of like, okay, let's
get back to it. You know, we didn't do well
last year, and they say, okay, we want and we
(40:02):
want to start waiting in front of our fans. So everybody's excited.
As a player, usually when you play, you want to
make sure it's food. You know, you want to take
them to to get packed. You want them to be
excited and and you want to feel like right away
from the key cubs that you know everybody.
Speaker 5 (40:18):
Is behind and you know, give the extrainersy to to
you know, proof SCOI only.
Speaker 4 (40:23):
So yeah, I'm sure every player or I excited to
come and home open there.
Speaker 5 (40:28):
It's the one not too miss.
Speaker 2 (40:29):
So sure, and I'm hoping everybody listening, everybody that was
down on the team in the off season, get excited
from the Orlando thing, get down to super Park. We
need to make it a fortress again. We really lost
that fortress feeling last year. And seven will tell you,
Adam can tell you. It starts with the fans. There's
no reason you shouldn't be in full voice for the
(40:52):
for the opener, you know, for for that opening kickoff,
Adam going to make it.
Speaker 3 (40:56):
Yeah, this would be probably my last childless capo, so
going hard on this one because afterwards we're probably gonna
have a tiny mixed baby and a Bijorn with a
pair of headphones over his head for the rest of
the time, So that'll be the rest of the season.
But yeah, I'm gonna give it one more shot. So
you know that's not incentsive enough of you to come
(41:17):
to the river and I don't know what is people,
come on.
Speaker 2 (41:20):
Now, Yeah, I mean, get get to Union Yards, get
to the sons of Ben Tailgate, get yourself lubricated, ready
to go. It's going to be exciting. And if you
are stuck like me in a foreign land called Las Vegas,
watch it on Apple TV. But make sure you get
JP telecamera and Sebastian Latwo on the radio because I
don't know who's calling the game for Apple, but it
(41:41):
can't be better than JP and Sebastian.
Speaker 3 (41:43):
You can scout simultaneously the new athletics facility that they're
building in four years, Matthew. And also wherever they're gonna
put the next MLS club that's going to Las Vegas.
Speaker 2 (41:55):
Oh yeah, I'll be scutting that out. And I'm trying
to hit a Golden Night scheme on Sunday evening.
Speaker 3 (42:00):
They look fun. They just looked like a fun time.
Speaker 2 (42:03):
I was going to go last night and got sidetracks,
So sunday's the plan. But I'll do a full report
on that book, guys, anything else while we put a
bowl on.
Speaker 3 (42:11):
This something something my frisbee team something something complete. That's
all yeah, folks, Yeah, go Phoenix. We'll see you guys
in May. That's our our home opener I think is
May fifth, so we'll see you out there and like
down the street from the Union too.
Speaker 2 (42:31):
So you know, I don't know why sebastianal two isn't
throwing out the first disc.
Speaker 3 (42:35):
Seba, come on down, You're you'll be royalty down in Aston, PA.
Speaker 5 (42:40):
I don't want to make a food of myself.
Speaker 2 (42:42):
But thank you, all right, every teachers, everybody, thank you
for tuning in episode twenty seven. We've got Cincinnati, so
everyone get down the Super Roup Park
