Speaker 1 (00:00):
Ex President of the Sons of Ben Matt Fantastic, X
Head Capo, Adam Booth, ex player, and forever a Union legend,
Sebastian Latou. These may be exes, but they're the experts
when it comes to the Philadelphia Union. This is Exes
in the U.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Welcome back, everybody to another episode in fact, episode number
thirty five of Exes in the U. My name's Matt
and Dazac the former president of the Sons of Men,
and I am joined with X Head Kappe, Adam Booth
and of course forever legend of the Union, Sebastian. Two gentlemen,
how are we doing on this Friday morning? Everyone good,

(00:43):
I'm great.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
I'm I'm ready to see another winner of the Union
this weekend.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
Damn Adam.

Speaker 4 (00:49):
And then they're doing well. Happy to be back with
the gentleman and talking a little footy.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Yeah, so let's get into it. Since we uh with
all kinds of travel and everything in busyness, we missed
a little bit, so we're going to catch up. Union Win,
Union Win, Union Win. They take down Atlanta three to nothing.
Quinn Sullivan's first goal of the year, and ma'am, what
a goal. Danley Jean Jacques gets his first goal in

(01:17):
the typical it was in the fiftieth minute, but typical
Guzan goal where Guzane fell down and then Ty got
the golden boot back. So yeah, it was a pretty
interesting game for that Atlanta game, which one of you
guys want to just recap Atlanta briefly for everyone out there,
Sure I go.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
I mean, yeah, like you said, a big weight on
the shoulder of Quinn. I think it was important to
Avian get his first goal, to get him loose. You know,
it's always an important especially when he's young. He had
a lot of pressure and try to you know, people
were saying being one of them is the best young
players so far in to be able to season. But
when you don't score, you know, doubt then come to
your head. So he was definitely a great goal, nice finish,

(01:59):
you know, composure that maybe he was missing during the
first game of the season to in front of the goal.
But yeah, well what the Manufac beautiful volley of his chest.
I think it was.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
It was a good goal.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
And then yeah, I think this game was was great.
Ivant personally I think really sucked. They were not very good,
you know, you can see that it's not really a
chemistry in this team right now, but you need to
take advantage of it. And you know, three zero or
nothing to say, we I think played well, especially in
a second half because after the red card of Luke Kich,

(02:35):
who was a little bit you know, stupid of him,
you know, like with a too year ow. But he
knows that, you know, he was very apologizing to estimate
after the game, but he's you know, we play at ten,
we still you know, stay strong. I think defensively, a
lot of effort from the vassidy from the Sullivan and
then from the forward and available to score a goal,

(02:56):
you know, ten against eleven, which you know show a
lot about this group. Baribu coming in, you know, was
on the bench, coming in and scoring, I think to
something healthy for the team that you know, you can
have guys coming on the bench even at ten and
score a goal with another great assist from Sullivan on across.
So it was kind of like not let's say the

(03:18):
best game offensively from you know, our let's say from four,
you know when I said to number ten or two forward,
but we were able to score three goals and get
to clinch it. So that's what we wanted after you know,
a three game with that win, the team reacted well
and you know they were able to play with adversity
at ten against eleven, and you know, I thought I

(03:38):
got a few chances, but you know, we stay very strong.
So I think it was a good performance, especially to
get back on a winning winning column for the team
and kind of get the momentum going for the game
against the last weekend against to do we play again
for they sere we go. You see, it's like a team,
you know, Sam, we are not the best, but just

(04:00):
came on a win on the on the Red Bull.
So yeah, I think it was a weeper four months.
But uh, you know a few stuff when the Union way,
we'll stay sell you us. But let's say we could
still play better. You know, it's kind of like show
us that we win, but we can still you know,
get better, you know in a runout of play.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
Yeah, and before I get to Adam real quick, Carnell
made a lot of changes in the lineup and and
a lot of subs. What were your thoughts on that?
Like as a player, would you would you love it?
Hate it? You know, you're going from Jim who would
be pretty stubborn and keeping guys playing a long you know,
a lot of minutes versus a lot of guys coming

(04:39):
in and out. You think that's helping everybody? Or are
are any egos getting brused? Do you think Sebah or
Adam one of you guys?

Speaker 4 (04:46):
I mean, I think when you have that kind of
a lineup, you know, you Bradley's just trying to figure
out who's who, you know, and he's still trying to
kick the tires. I mean, like preseason is great and
get the matches under your belt is fantastic. Now that
you're actually in the fire, you know, he's trying to plug.
He's trying to do some combinations and see who comes

(05:07):
out on top. And to be honest with you, I'm
not one hundred percent sure what the best combination of
eleven is right now. You know a lot of teams
have that established eleven, have those guys in their places,
and right now at the Union, it could be a
lot of different individuals. Who's your right back only a
given day, who's your starting center back pairing, who's your
pivot at the defensive mid completely, you know.

Speaker 5 (05:30):
Who's your striker. It all kind of depends right now.

Speaker 4 (05:34):
It's a It's a good problem to have because it's
authentic depth as opposed to confusion. You know, I think
sometimes that gets confused when you have a position controversy.
Is it because these two players are equal and we're
just trying to figure out who's better. Or is it
an authentic depth effect where it's just like, Okay, if

(05:55):
this guy's out, it's fine, this guy's behind him, and
so on and so forth. So I think I was
okay with the rotation because look, we're still early in
the year, and you know, I think with the season
as long as it is, with as many competitions as
you're about to have, I'm sure we're gonna mention the
Open Cup happening, and this week later you gotta figure
out who's who.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
Yeah, I personally love it as a fan, as somebody
that's followed this team, I love it because I think
it keeps guys fresh and I think it keeps guys competitive.
So I guess we're gonna see But as long as
they I think that's the strength of this team that
they're playing unselfish and as a team. And I think
because we don't have high marquee names. I think that's

(06:37):
really important, So I'm loving it right now. All right,
d C DC came in for Kids' Day, Adam, and
as a new father, you must appreciate the novelty of
kids Day at a four thirty start. But d c's
came off a two to one win over Red Bull,
so everyone's like, oh DC sucks, we should beat them anyhow,
But I'm like, you play who you play? Jack oft

(07:00):
Glesnes gets another gleazzness kind of goal, another short ranged
nuclear missed the Norwegian rocket. Dj J gets another one,
so he's becoming a scoring machine from the defensive midsheet field.
Cavin got in on the sixty first minute, which I
was kind of shocked that he got in as early

(07:22):
as he did, but you know, he didn't do anything spectacular,
but he didn't hurt them at all, and he showed
that he belongs on the field. And Bruno really needed
and got one. And then the last thing I want
to ask you, Adam, is this Blake's eightieth clean sheet
or is this his one hundred and first clean sheet?

(07:42):
Because it's being tauted all over the place. I think
it's eightieth and MLS competitions and one oh one in
all Union games, but right now it's Blake one oh
one's giving a master class in goalkeeping.

Speaker 4 (07:55):
So and it's not even just one of these like Okay,
he's only getting maybe two shots on the whole day
and he gets a clean sheet because the defense was stingy.
He's working and working to a point, and it's almost
making me a little uncomfortable in terms of how many
shots he's having to defend and really really great saves
that he's needing to make. Like, yes, these games are

(08:17):
three nothing, but there's a lot of opportunities or these
other teams to have scored. Going back to the Atlanta game,
once they red card happened, Atlanta looked like gangbusters out there.
They ended up outshooting the Union twelve to ten in
the game, out possessing the Union with almost seventy percent
of the possession for the rest of the match. I mean, yeah,
I understand Bradley kind of parking the bus in the

(08:39):
second half, but routinely the Union are giving up possession.
Now they're giving up time of possession, which, depending on
your style, does that work. Jim was a person who
always was the counter attacker, so he was okay with
giving up possession, but you're giving up a decent amount
of shots and you're putting Blake to work. And I'm
not one hundred percent short the longevity of that against

(09:00):
tougher teams. Now with the DC game again, to talk
about something that is interesting more so than factual, the
continued dominance that the Union have versus DC over the
past six seven years, to me, is really something to behold.

(09:21):
I mean, it's almost to the point where, no, you
can't even call DC a rivalry in the reverse because
we just beat them all the time. You know, it
goes the same rule the Red Bull had for us
back in the past, that can't call the Union rivals
we beat them all the time. It's really really interesting
to see the dominance that the Union have time after
time against a local opponent in DC, and then going

(09:45):
off of it, the people who needed to score, the
people who needed to contribute, the people who needed to
play all did so. Cavin Ye in minutes. You know,
you got to see what the kid has. As much
as U two is gonna work him, you got to
see what he's got, you know, in a level of
MLS level caliber talent around him. You know, if he's
the guy, he's the guy, Yakub getting a goal is

(10:06):
always good for his self esteem. I know that's probably
benefiting him profusely. You know, to get DJJ another goal
feels like that might be a little bit of a
waterfall effect for him.

Speaker 5 (10:18):
He looks like he's getting in those towards the net
and that's beautiful. And to get your high price signing
a goal too.

Speaker 4 (10:24):
Look, all of this was exactly the game the Union
needed to get themselves in the position moving forward, moving
into the Open Cup competition, moving into the next couple
of stages of the season. You're right like you had
that wall where you played really good opponents and you
took a couple of l's. You fell down the standings

(10:45):
a little bit, and you might have gone for some
soul searching, got a couple of victories against teams that
you probably should beat. Anyway, you're back up in the
conversation with the top of the East in a supporter
shield run that kind of conversation. That's where this team
should be. And it's really interesting to see how long
it's going to maintain that.

Speaker 3 (11:11):
Okay, So for me, the DC is I think a
good game as well. But again, if I talk about
all the positive for d c Rezus, we're not coming
in and all the start this season stepping forward Lukage,
I think it did great. It's not easy you know
to come specially in the timid field. You can see that. Yeah,
we have somebody else who can play some enter me

(11:32):
if do another things. So if I come back to
your question about how you know Bradley is managing the
roster and the fact that make a lot of change,
I really love it. And for me it's as an
ex player, it's a lot about how the coaching staff
deal with it. He says, an open communication is there.
It's like a process and the fact that he talked
to a probably each player you will see good results.

(11:54):
And that's what we see right now. And if you
have a coach who maybe don't talk too much or
make decisions with out you know, really having a feeling
with what's going on in his group, usually you have
bad results. And right now the team is having in
a very good result and you have Baribo, you know,
coming up the bench scoring against Atlanta. Then you know
he decided to put Damien on a bench coming in

(12:16):
score a goal as well. So it's all of those
positive things. You know you want to see. You want
to see guys stepping in when the team needed the most,
which when it's evidently and look if you got two
goal each, you know for the team where maybe we're
struggling a little bit offensively, you know in a final
third to find like our forward. Then you know Queen
Sullivan and Bass have been more involved. So it's all
of those things. I think it's it's great to see

(12:38):
and you get another clin shit, another good win against
this U. Yes, I think it's not as good as
a Union for a long time, but we you know
it's not because on the paper we are better that
we're going to win. Th Reserlves they did the job
and it's I think it was another good professional performance
getting the three points, getting done and now moving on
to Montreal. But yeah, the positive for me was a

(13:00):
Bueno coming in Danley with another goal, not showing what
he could do, gladness having you know, his first goal
the same, like kind of more polity for him with
some criticism he got to know with his defense, but
you know he can show that he can score as well.
And Damiani, I think that many coming in I think
it was a good like twenty minutes for him, and
you can really see like how good it is to
hold the ball, like the way how he turned around

(13:22):
this defender to score and you know, like be so
strong like back to the goal. I think it'd be
a huge help, you know for the Union. So can
we play off him, you know, the way is so good,
you know, with the ball back to the goal, and
you know, run off him and make something different like
then they did the goal against Atlanta. It'd be great
to see, you know, what the offense can do. But

(13:45):
three zero, three zero, what can you say? You know,
there's not much. It's they did the job. Of course,
he can always be better. But the team did well
and they got the six ponds that we wanted, you know,
from those two games. We were supposed to be you know,
a three point win for each and I did it.
So now they can go to Montreal and hopefully you
keep the minent im going and get another one.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
Yeah, And that's the thing you have to play. Who
is on the schedule, and you got to beat the
teams you're supposed to beat, and they're doing that. So
a little club, a little all at them.

Speaker 4 (14:14):
Yeah, Well, I just I just wanted to add it's
one of the things and Sabah was talking about this
is the fact of the matter is we've had.

Speaker 5 (14:21):
A little bit of a goal drought.

Speaker 4 (14:22):
I mean, yeah, we got the last couple of games
three nothing wins, but before that there is a bit
of a goal aall. This team right now is number
two in goal differential and MLS is with a plus
ten goal differential. So to think about what is possible
for this Union team that they're already like they are
producing that level of chances and opportunities on net, that

(14:45):
if we have some touches here and there, that goal
differential goes from ten to sixteen in a heartbeat. And
it's it's crazy to think about the offensive capabilities of
this team and the idea that you can either in
any given moment bring Bruno or bring Tie.

Speaker 5 (15:02):
Off the bench to kind of dagger teams.

Speaker 4 (15:05):
That's going to be something that's going to be very
interesting to see how that goes to the rest of
the season, especially if those gentlemen up top all understand
the role that is being made there.

Speaker 2 (15:15):
Yeah, so just a little Union news. Well, it's the
same old, same old. We've got the Club World Cup
coming up of course, July fourth weekend, Nashville Trip Revenge
Tour Sebastian Latwo on Broadway in Nashville. Fireworks, you know,
it's it's going to be a good time. So Philly
Sports trips dot com. August two, Frankfurt's coming to town.

(15:37):
So we're waiting to hear if there's any events or
stuff that we can do. I know some members of
the Frankfurt team are going to be at Brahuse Schmidt,
so if that's something that's interesting to you, we will
let you know. And then the biggest news of this
upcoming week US Open Cup returns to Chester Wednesday, May
the seventh. In the eleven a team that we should be.

(16:00):
We should beat them, but in the eleven could be
the Cinderella and Adam. I'm going to be there, and
I'm wondering, am I going to be one of fifty
or one of five thousand. I'm just putting it out
there now, will you make your return to the Open Cup?

Speaker 4 (16:17):
I will have to see where my fatherly duties reside
in that moment.

Speaker 5 (16:22):
But I will try, you know, if I can make
it back.

Speaker 4 (16:25):
It's been before I wasn't even dating my current wife
when the last time the Union hosted an Open Cup
match at home. So again, I've always talked about how
much I love the Open Cup.

Speaker 5 (16:39):
I think it is if.

Speaker 4 (16:40):
You are a casual fan, or you're trying to get
into it, or you don't know where your status is
with the Union, you come to an Open Cup game,
it'll make or break you. You'll definitely be like, either
I love this forever or I'm never coming back. And
I respect that in either direction. But it's an event.

Speaker 5 (16:57):
I love it. I missed it. I'm glad it's back.

Speaker 2 (17:00):
I'm just wondering if India eleven's fans don't show up
well though, there would be a return of the Shirtless
Crew from Golden Years of Suns a band. I don't
know if you remember that, Adam, but we had a.

Speaker 5 (17:12):
Do I not remember?

Speaker 2 (17:13):
Well? You know, not everybody remembers about seven or eight
portly gentlemen taking their shirts off and cheering for the
other team.

Speaker 5 (17:19):
How can you forget?

Speaker 2 (17:21):
I tried to sometimes, so Saba, your thoughts, I mean,
I know the Open Cup is one of your favorites.
Your thoughts on Indie eleven, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (17:31):
I mean, it's a it's a. It's a good competition,
I think to to kind of get the entire country
like behind him. It's not just the MNS, but it's
you know, every division, you know, starting from a lower
level and all around happening. You know in September October,
you know, start very early. But then when you have
team like India coming to the Union, you know they're
going to you know, give everything they can to be

(17:53):
an MTS team. And because for them it's a all
the player in India eleven, it's almost a showcase. You know,
they can show what they can do, able to do
an amazing games. Maybe they will caught the eyes of
one of the scouts and be like, oh maybe we
should you know, look at him for the rest of
the season and sign him. Because there's some talent in
the USA. It just you know, you need some luck.

(18:14):
And it happened to me when I come to the
US and it was a long time ago, but I
planned you myself for Seattle Sanders and we beat a
lot of MLS team in Open Cup, like we went
twice to the semi final with the USL. We beat
a ship US a lot, we beat Colorado. I forgot
who else we beat. We beat like a few good teams,
but they were not taking it seriously, you know they

(18:34):
were maybe they are beauty, maybe they didn't really care
that much because it was not as much. I think
now social media about it and you know news. But
now it's getting bigger. You know, people talk about it.
You can see now the goals every every in a round.
You can like you say, follow the Cinderellar story of
like the team with the lowest division. So now it's

(18:55):
I like the competition. It just forced the union in
a month of men and going to talk about it
when we talk about Montreal, but it's it's going to
be a busy schedule, very busy. You know. If if
they beat in the on the seven, then they will
have another game on the twenty first, and it means
they will play pretty much every Saturday and every Wednesday

(19:15):
in a month of May. So defy be the roster
is going to to go, you know, a big part
of the months of May. And hopefully we you know,
we can keep going in this competition because it's fun.
You give it a lot of the game and I
think for the guys who have been working there have
a bts of that practice. I think you're going to
see some guys maybe didn't have a lot of minutes,

(19:35):
but we'll start you not doing the opening game.

Speaker 2 (19:39):
Yeah, I mean, I'm looking forward to it, so hopefully
we'll see everybody out there. Should be a good time
whether I think it's looking pretty good, but it's still
too early. A little bit of league news, nothing nothing
crazy out there, but Nashville scores a touchdown versus Chicago,
which I was like amazed by that they scored seven

(20:00):
seven goals, and you know, I guess we can talk
a little bit about Montreal getting their first win versus
Vancouver in the Canadian Cup since that's our next opponent,
and then we can get into the opponent of Montreal
coming in. Oh, that's sorry about that. It was against Toronto. Yeah,
I don't know why I'm getting my Canadian town screwed up.
But yeah, So Montreal gets their first win of the

(20:23):
year and they are sitting at uh I want they
had a one er lost to Red Bull before that, right,
and they.

Speaker 4 (20:32):
There's a last with with three points and zero wins
on the season.

Speaker 2 (20:39):
Wow, so that's our opponent. So uh, subah, do you
want to do a deep dive in Montreal since we
were starting to talk about that.

Speaker 3 (20:47):
I mean, there's not a big dig David's just the
team with a struggle city right now, you know, firing
that coach already tried to rebuild, not really having any
of the same standing in even every game, not able
to to win a game, but like you said, just one,
not in a regular time but in pik in Tonto.
It's kind of struggling as well, you know, in the league,

(21:09):
so you know, not maybe the biggest opponent, but it
gives some confidence to them to kind of like get
something going for them. So yeah, it's like we talk
about it in a show you know that you can
watch tonight eleven PM on page seventeen. The struggle and
of a team. It's never easy to go play there.
You don't want to be the team who gives them

(21:29):
some hope and give them first win. So you have
to come really prepare mentally to come right away and
not believing it's gonna be easy. So if the Union
do that and they are ready from the beginning like
they were already the last two games, I see them
winning the game them it's going early, you know, pulling,
you know, the ball away from Montreal having them getting

(21:50):
frustrated and not the opposite, because if the Union get
frustrated against the team that they are thinking, oh we
should beat them and don't, it could be you know not,
especially when we was thinking of happening falls Union. So
it's not gonna be an easy game. It's easier opener
knowing they are struggling, but we need to go at
them right away and not you know, take it easy

(22:13):
on them.

Speaker 2 (22:13):
Yeah, you can't overlook this team. You know you're still
going in So yeah, Adam, your thoughts real quick and
then we'll start getting ready to wrap up.

Speaker 5 (22:24):
Look, it's a.

Speaker 4 (22:27):
Revenge of the Sith is having your twentieth anniversary this
past week. For anyone who is a Star Wars nerd
like myself and for Star Wars, one of the greatest
quotes of all time is by Admiral Akbar in the
beginning of Return to the Jedi of it's a trap
and this is literally one of the greatest trap games
I've ever seen in the history of mankind. You are

(22:48):
feeling yourself after two three nothing victories and arguably the
worst team in MLS, one of the worst teams possibly
in MLS history. Is coming to your team, to your
city for what seems to be like a stroll through
the park. God, this is going to be one of
the better tests of the season, not because of opponents,
but because of mental toughness.

Speaker 5 (23:08):
I gotta see a team that is ready.

Speaker 4 (23:10):
I got to see a team that wants it, and
I got to see the team that can bury these
guys early and often. We were talking about the opponent
before Atlanta. Atlanta has two wins on the season. One
was a four to three comeback victory at home against
NYCFC that literally looked like it was gone propel Atlanta
into something great.

Speaker 5 (23:29):
It has not.

Speaker 4 (23:29):
They've scored one goal since that game. But the other
opponent was the beginning of the season, a two to
one victory against Montreal. So this is a moment where
you have two of the worst struggling teams back to
back with after having Atlanta, after having DC and now
having Montreal three year peat. Take care of business, shoot

(23:50):
up the standings, beat the people in front of you.

Speaker 2 (23:54):
Yeah, and if anyone's making the trip, I just looked
on weather dot com. It's going to be fifty six
degrees as a high, and forty five is a low
for up in Canada, which is might be chilly for
some of the guys if they're getting used to the
Philadelphia weather. But I think it's going to be a
nice day. I don't think weather it's going to be
a factor. But you are going up to Montreal to
play them, so you got to respect them. Yeah. So,

(24:15):
and guys, I think we're gonna wrap this up. I
know where time is going. So just to remind everybody, Sebah,
you still got room in the camp for upcoming in Wildwood.

Speaker 3 (24:25):
Crest, Yes, yes, yes, of course, an limited you know,
come come to the camp with a big field. We
will have fun. So yeah, it's coming coming up quickly,
So make sure you sign up.

Speaker 2 (24:35):
Adam a couple of years you're going to be signing
Leo up.

Speaker 4 (24:38):
You know that if honestly, could I imagine another person
I wanted to train my child.

Speaker 2 (24:44):
And uh you with Phoenix, What do we got home?

Speaker 5 (24:47):
Opener? We we're one to know.

Speaker 4 (24:50):
We beat DC in the biggest upset possibly in the
last fifteen years of Ultimate Frisbee.

Speaker 5 (24:55):
I'm not even making that up hyperbole. We had in.

Speaker 2 (24:57):
Phillies beat DC the same time. Was this a sweet?

Speaker 4 (25:00):
It was a d c sweep where the Philadelphia beat
DC and like they stole something as a city. But yes,
it was the greatest or the greatest upset possibly in
the last ten years in our league. The Philadelphia Phoenix
went down to DC and beat them in their own
house to start the season, a team that is always
in contention for the title. So now we got the

(25:21):
home opener and we got Toronto. Toronto's coming to play
us on May the fourth. May the fourth be with
you for Star Wars Night, so we'll see you.

Speaker 2 (25:29):
Say well everyone, thanks for tuning into episode number thirty five.
We hope to see you Wednesday, maybe seventh, at Super
Ru Park for the US Open Cup. Gentlemen, thanks again
for joining and everyone have a great day.
