Hey, thanks for having me. Glad to be here.

Speaker 3 (03:17):
And head coach at Moberly High School in Moberley, Missouri,
The Spartans Brandon boy Er coach, thank you very much.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
Thanks for having me. I appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
Folks. What these two gentlemen are also going to be
part of our broadcast crew. We're gonna be live streaming
all the baseball coming out of Sidelia. It's gonna be
live from Liberty Park five pm eight pm Thursday, Friday
Saturday all day from ten to seven Sunday, Championships Sunday.
I'm looking forward to that. So I appreciate these gentlemen

(03:52):
taking the time. But first we're gonna squirrel down. We
got some fifteen U seventeen U championship tournament's going on.
Fifteen you brackets are set. I want to give a
shout out here. First off to one of the commissioners,
Scott Blackwell. He also runs the Eureka program. Does a

(04:16):
great job. By the way, Eureka always always right in
the mix. Uh. They're in one of the nineteen one
of the nineteen U zones. But he did a cool thing.
If you've got Game Changer, you can follow the fifteen
U Freshman Championships. He's got the whole thing right here

(04:36):
on Game Changer. It's killer schedule, teams, pitch counts, everything.
You can see the overall and we're going to look
at that overall. You got Post two to two six,
which I guess you would call the number one seed
with a twenty five and ten record. That's Elsberry. Uh,

(04:59):
that looks like Post to eighteen, eighteen and six to
a couple of ties. That's like kissing your sister. Nobody
likes that. The Pacific Indians Post three twenty twenty two
and twelve playing some good baseball. You got Eureka Post
one seven, seven, thirteen, thirteen and one. The Elks Elks

(05:20):
Lodge they were in there. That's from over in the
Kansas City area. They're in the state championship. You got
and the Jackson tribe from down there went in their zone.
So that is the fifteen U Championship. If you want
to follow it, if you've got game changer, this is

(05:41):
a really cool deal. All the schedule is there. You
can also see the schedule on the website Missouri American
Legion Baseball dot org. So shout out to Scott Blackwell
for making that happen. Schedule's all right there, guys. I
know there's probably you know, not too much. Maybe we

(06:03):
don't know as much as we need to about some
of these teams. But I'll tell you what what I
did see Elsberry. They got a team ERA of two
point seventy nine, an opponent batting average against at two
oh nine. As a coach, Kyle, would you take that?

Speaker 2 (06:24):
Oh? Absolutely? And you know, I mean pitching, pitching and
defense is the name of the game. You know. The
way the way I kind of tell our team is
our pitching and defense has to give our offense time
to figure it out. And when you can hold teams
to under three runs a game, I mean, that's a

(06:44):
big reason why they've got that main wins over the summer.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
Absolutely, you know that's a great point. Brandon I'll throw
this at you. You know, you always talk about that
first time through the lineup. You're trying to work through
the guys. The more the guys are talking, and to
coaches point, you do need that time, don't you.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
Oh? Yeah, for sure. Pitching was a strong suit for
our team this year.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
And anytime that you can get through the lineup more
than once at the same guys is a benefit and
save your saving your arms. And we had some pitching
depth that we were able to manage some different situations
and things like that. And it seems like this team
has some pitching depth for sure. I was looking at it,
and they have a lot of guys have thrown innings

(07:32):
for him, but basically the whole team. So when you
have that, especially being a fifteen year team, and they
saw that they faced some high school teams as well,
So I feel like this team's got pretty pretty made
for a postseason run.

Speaker 3 (07:45):
Yeah, this young man, I want to give a shout out.
I'm sure I'm gonna butcher his name though. That's what's terrible.
His first name is Frankie. I would imagine that's pronounced
to fail. I hope I pronouncing that correctly. A point
five to one to two e r A and opponent
batting average against at one seventy six. You know, whatever

(08:08):
level you're pitching at, if you guelt you you know
you're a half a run UH and and an opponent
bat batting average under the Mendoza line, you're getting done.
I mean that's I don't care, as simple as it
gets so. And because Eureka down there, their team, their
team ERA is a little bit high at five three six.

(08:30):
Their opponent batting average is not too bad at two
sixty six. But I like that they've scored one hundred
and eighty seven runs. Uh, they got thirty seven extra
base hits UH at a two eighty nine team batting average,
which is pretty good for Eureka down there.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (08:48):
The Elks, Uh, they were slashing three sixteen, four o
four and four eighty seven with fifty five runs scored
in ten games, which I think is pretty good. Guys.
What do you think?

Speaker 2 (09:00):
Yeah? Absolutely, you know I think that you know, again,
having the offense allows your pitching in defense to not
be as perfect. And I think when you're talking about
a fifteen U level, I think you can get into
some days, or some games or some weekends where you know,

(09:23):
maybe the defense just isn't there, and so you know,
if you if you don't have one, having the offense
there to pick them up and you know, provide the
run support, it can take away a lot of stress. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (09:39):
Absolutely, the other Pacific I've heard a lot about. I
heard a lot of good things from this side because
it's right down the forty four corridor there. The other one,
the elephant in the room, Washington Post to eighteen. You know,

(10:00):
overly the nineteen u's got to come over here for
Zone one. You know, I would imagine you guys are
familiar with Washington Post to eighteen. They've been doing it
for quite some time. Brandon and these guys are eighteen,
six and two. As we said, they just seem year
after year to be able to reload with talent.

Speaker 2 (10:21):
I mean, that's a pretty solid area for baseball.

Speaker 1 (10:23):
When I used to play for the Sixers, we'd usually
go over to Washington and our season we go over
to the Zone tournament.

Speaker 2 (10:30):
We usually end our season losing to Washington.

Speaker 1 (10:33):
I mean, they got Washington High, they got Borgia, and
they got some other schools around that area that they
can pull from, and they have a strong tradition and
a lot of times when it comes to Legion, whether
it's fifteen, seventeen, nineteen U, those teams with a strong
tradition get to get the kids want to go play
for those Legion teams and they're successful in the postseason.

(10:53):
And I've seen it from the nineteen U level all
the way down. So I assume that that Washington team,
but same with Elsberry as well. They have they have
a strong tradition in Legion, So I would say that
would be a fun matchup.

Speaker 3 (11:07):
Absolutely, Kyle. From your side over there, I know you're
you know, being in Sidelia there so far here most
of the teams in the fifteen you are, you know,
coming from the east side of the state. What do
you guys got to do on that end? What do

(11:27):
you what are you seeing as far as some of
these younger teams with Legion Baseball there.

Speaker 2 (11:35):
You know, I can't speak to to all the teams
on this side, but I know for us specifically, we
had a fifteen year team for a couple of years there,
and you know, we just we weren't able to put
together the numbers to make it happen this year. And
I think you know, if I had to kind of
to maybe put a thumb on on something, I think

(11:58):
that it's more you know, travel ball I think is
a little bit more prevalent on this side of the
state and in the Kansas City area than Legion because
I mean I can remember when I played, you had
High Boy, you had rod z As, you had you know, Fight,
and you had all these teams coming out of Kansas City.
And now I think the only team left is Fight,

(12:23):
you know. So I think that's kind of at least
at the at the younger levels. You know, a lot
of those guys have been playing with these travel teams
for so many years and they just they want one
more year before they go, you know, play with their
high school buddies, and so I think that's a little
bit of it. But you know, again, the other part

(12:45):
of it is, again you got to have the numbers
to put the team together.

Speaker 3 (12:49):
So I know this year, because there's the club over
there on the Kansa side six four three k C,
I know they had Allegiant team. So I think that's promising.
That's interesting, that dynamic and down in Jackson, I know
with Mark Lewis, they're affiliated with that Jackson Tribe organization

(13:11):
and work through that club. So I think that's an
interesting dynamic that some I think some of these uh,
some of these programs can can get a little across
uh cross mogination, I guess for LA and and and

(13:31):
create some opportunities for kids that you know, not everybody
needs to travel. So I think it's right. I think
it's a great opportunity. Hey, listen, I'm I'm thinking either
you know, I think the top teams here, I think
it's anybody's guests. I think this is gonna be a
close one. Ah, you know, personally, man, I'm taking Elsberry

(13:56):
here without seeing some of the stats from Washington. I
just like their pitching, their e er A. I don't
know what Pacific Scott. I know they got a guy
that his name's, last name's Haddocks in I think it
was that Zone championship game. He went five innings, three hits,

(14:18):
four base on balls, five k's, no runs allowed. But
I don't know what else they have, So I'm gonna
go with what I know there and what I see.
That's just one man's opinion. But seventeen you guys, this
one here, there's some teams notable here Sat Jen Saint

(14:40):
Genevieve post one point fifty. That freshman team last year
was really good. They're the seventeen U team this year
they're really good again. I could see them winning it all.
But you've got on that side now here in the
seventeen U Kyle and uh Brandon from your guys side

(15:04):
fight Jeff City and Siedelia all in this seventeen has
a lot of good representation from both sides of the
state here. What do you guys know about those teams?

Speaker 2 (15:17):
Yeah, so, I mean jeff City is is a really
good team. I know that they you know, they've got
some Blair Oaks guys mixed in, some Fatoma guys mixed
in as well as some Jeff City guys, you know,
and there's just there's a lot of talent in the
Jeff City area and when you can combine that, I know,

(15:38):
Sedelia has had a really good summer. You know, they
played a lot of games, and so I think, you
know that I think that'll be a strength for them
having seen a bunch of different scenarios compared to maybe
some of these other teams that haven't played as many
which they probably have played more just not you know,

(15:59):
don't have necessarily the records marked. And then Fight. You know,
Fight's a scrappy group. They they're they're not necessarily gonna
wow you in any area, but they do a lot
of things well. And so anytime you can kind of
be well rounded like that, I think it gives you
an opportunity to make some noise.

Speaker 3 (16:20):
Absolutely, Brandon that Jeff City group two nine to seventy
ra a one hundred and fifty four k's as a
staff and in one hundred and seventy one innings pitched.
Their team batting average they're three oh six, four fifty five,
four oh six with fifty one extra base hits. This
is a very balanced team.

Speaker 2 (16:43):
Yeah, this team has a lot of talent.

Speaker 1 (16:45):
I'm pretty sure the Kimpker kid that leads uh an
average and a lot of offensive categories as a Sainte kid.
They won the state championship in Class one a lot
of times, especially with the.

Speaker 2 (16:59):
Jeff City area.

Speaker 1 (17:00):
In those smaller schools around Jeff, you can play the
name game and you can see names and like that
kid's probably a pretty good player right there. But other
than the Blair Oaks and the Jeff kids, you got
SAYNY Eugene, which was a state finalist. The talent around
jeff City is there. And when you the way that

(17:21):
Legion Baseball asn't as many clubs anymore, you can pull
from a lot of areas, and this jeff City team
will have a lot of talent, a lot of guys
that even at those Blair Oks jeff City schools might
have been JV guys but would start on a lot
of our city teams around the stage just because of
how deep the talent is. So I'm sure there's jeff
City teams it's really good. I looked at some of

(17:43):
the games on their schedule. They have some tough, tough
programs that they play, not just Legion teams as well,
So I'm sure that the talent will be pretty deep
on that club.

Speaker 3 (17:53):
So now I looked at the head to head and
sedel you had they played once, sidel You Jeff City,
and they're in that that same pool. So you know,
it'll be interesting to see, you know, how that goes.
Sidelia has got them one nothing, It was a close
ball game. How do you see those two playing out?

(18:13):
Go ahead, Kyle, you know, I.

Speaker 2 (18:18):
Think it's going to be a matter of You know,
it's potentially cliche to say, but it's going to depend
upon which defense and which pitching staff does better, because
I think offensively, both of these teams can really get
after it. You know, Sidelia has a team batting average
of three seventy three and has has done a lot

(18:42):
of things. They run the bases, you know, they're they're
very attacking type of offense. So if Jeff City is
going to beat them, they're going to have to do
it by keeping them off the bases, by you know,
not letting that offense get into a rhythm. And so
you know, I think it really boils down to that.

(19:02):
And you know, on the pitching side, that's where you know,
when you have a tournament like this where you got
double elimination, you have pool play, you have different things
where you don't just lose and you're done. That kind
of changes how you approach your matchups. And so I'll

(19:24):
be very interested to see, you know, if these guys
throw their best arms at each other, because with it
being that early in the week, you might be able
to bring a guy back on Saturday maybe if it
works out that way, whereas you know, maybe you you know, hey,

(19:45):
we need the other two, so we're gonna go get
the other two and this one. You know, Hey, we'll
take our chances with maybe our second best guy, and
then we'll see we'll live with the results. So I'd
be very interesting to see how that plays out.

Speaker 3 (20:01):
The format. Oh and that's the other thing too, folks.
So I want to let you know what the format
is because it's a little different than it's been in
the past with the seventeen you bracket. I'm sure Drew
put that up there a minute ago. But it's gone
to a pool play style. Each team will play two
games in a pool situation, and the top two teams

(20:25):
from each pool will square off in semifinals. Uh, and
the two semi winners will play for the state championship.
So you know, to your point, I don't know if
you can hold off, you got to get a win because.

Speaker 2 (20:39):
If you go zero and two, right, oh yeah.

Speaker 3 (20:44):
Good night, Sayanara. And when you said that, at first,
I'm like, oh, yeah, that sounds Wait a minute, No,
you got to look because it's no, it's not double elimination.
So there you go. So that strategy goes into play here.
You've got to get at least one win and keep
your runs against down. And so this favors this particular

(21:08):
in my opinion, this particular format favors pitching depth.

Speaker 1 (21:15):
I can I can speak on it a little bit.
That bracket is set up just like Moberly's zone is.
And I text coach on today and we can talk
about a little bit more. And I was like, so,
how are you pitching this? Are you going to try
to get to the bracket because it's a little bit different.
You're trying to get to state, You're not trying to
win at all. And I say, are you trying to
get to the bracket?

Speaker 2 (21:35):
Are you saving?

Speaker 1 (21:36):
Are you because they do have some pretty solid pitching depth.
Are you going to try to, you know, get to
the bracket and save your dudes for that?

Speaker 2 (21:43):
Like, hey, you want to do it?

Speaker 1 (21:44):
I mean, it's the same thing that high school baseball
coaches have to do on a weekly basis. And it's
interesting to try to play that game of chess when
you have pitching depth or lack thereof.

Speaker 3 (21:54):
So that's that's a big key. Because here's the other thing.
The star side Saint John fight Washington, Oh my gosh,
uh in my when I was looking when I was
did I did a power ranking. I did one power
ranking for the seventeen U before we got into this,

(22:16):
because I started looking at these teams and I had
Saint John one, Fight two, Sedelia three, jeff City at
four in Washington and five. So in my this is
just my thoughts on this. These three teams that are
in the stars were three of the top five teams

(22:37):
in the state at the seventeen U level, which I
think is very very real. And so here they are
playing against each other. I don't think you can save
a bullet here. Coach Kyle, your thoughts on that.

Speaker 2 (22:54):
Oh yeah, yeah, no, I agree, you know because the
all time, you know coin toss or the thought process,
especially you know when you're talking spring, you're talking districts.
You know, lose, you're done. Well, you can't make it
till the next day if you don't win that day.
And so when you think about that, yeah, I mean,

(23:14):
you don't want to go down, you know with your
best bullet on on the sideline. You you always want
to shoot your best bullet right, you know, when you
need it. And and that's where, like coach is talking about,
your depth comes into play. I mean, you might have
a one A and a one B, whereas another team
has a clear number one and then it's it's a
drop off. And so you know, some of those teams

(23:37):
that feel really confident in their you know their one A,
one B. Now they're looking and they're going, Okay, we
know that this guy, this team only has one and
so we need to go get that one and then
we'll we'll move from there.

Speaker 3 (23:54):
And just looking at some head to head early it
was early in the season. It was in June, but
Washington and Saint Jed did play and Saint Jen beat
him thirteen to one, which is a pretty solid win.
But I'll give that that's early in the season. You know,
if we're looking at head to head matchups. Washington also

(24:16):
beat the Sedalia team five to three that was in June.
Fight beat Washington early in the season. So these teams
have played each other and you know, you get the
better of somebody here or somebody there. So I think
this is a I think these are pretty even matchups,
and I think you could toss a coin to see

(24:37):
who's gonna come out of this. Honestly, I think it's
gonna be this particular state championship in my estimation, is
going to come down to who's throwing the best at
that time. It's gonna be the pitching and defense. This
comes down to what we've talked about, Brandon. You've seen this,
especially in the last two district and playoffs in high school.

(25:03):
I mean where runs are just premium. I mean you've
been in one run ball games like forever.

Speaker 1 (25:10):
Yeah, yeah, not by choice, but yeah, in the postseason,
runs are definitely a premium. And like he said, you
never know if someone has one or one A or
one ABCD, or if someone just has the dude. And
we've seen it before. We saw it this year in
our district when Boomville has a kid going to State

(25:33):
ferries just the Bishop kid's stud and when you see
him throwing in the semi finals, it gives you a
better feeling. You never want to look ahead, but when
you see those big arms throwing get someone else to
get to the game and to throw your best arm
to get there, it gives you some sense of confidence.
But you still got to take care of business. I

(25:54):
think that pitching depth in the postseason goes farther than
obviously the shutdown dude, especially in these setups where you have,
you know, either a do double the nation or a
pool play and missions set up. You have one game
and you're done. So seeing that big the big horse
on the bump is not is not a good sign

(26:15):
when you have.

Speaker 2 (26:15):
To see that, guys.

Speaker 1 (26:16):
So I think pitching depth prevails in the way that
these tournaments are set up. So whatever team has the
pitching depth and obviously the defense to back it. And
like you said, one run ball games aren't fun to play.
And so if the offense you can get all three
fast that's in there, then it's gonna be a good
weekend for you.

Speaker 3 (26:32):
So somebody has got to get a bump down, coach. Yeah,
and you know what's seventeen you? I mean you, it's
hard at high school sometimes these kids are reluctant to
you know, square up and really work to get one down.
And you're asking a seventeen year old sometimes do that.

(26:54):
It's tough situation when the pressure is high. These are
big moments. It's like watching the home run of the
All Star Game last night? Was that killer or what?

Speaker 2 (27:04):
Oh? Man? I loved it? It was great.

Speaker 3 (27:07):
I have never saw it really was, And and what
Schwarber did that to me? Epitomizes clutch. That was unbelievable.
I can't believe it. So you got a seventeen year
old kid in a feeling that kind of pressure, trying
to get a bunt down facing some guy that's probably

(27:28):
throwing load to mid eighties. It's not easy, folks, Yep,
not easy exactly. So take your pick. Hey, tell us
what your pick is, put it down below. I'm not picking.
I just don't. I I think you can. There's I
think any any one of those teams cape I think

(27:50):
is is woefully they're the host. They're the host, they
get a spot. But I don't unless something they just
get hot. It's happens. We saw that with a high
school team, not last year or the year before. Lutheran
Saint Charles Man. They had full wins all season and

(28:11):
rode themselves.

Speaker 2 (28:13):
To the final. Yeah, yeah they did, didn't they? Oh
you got to have a chance, man.

Speaker 1 (28:21):
They had a dude on the bump, talking about facing
the dude.

Speaker 2 (28:25):
They had the dude against U.

Speaker 3 (28:28):
Yeah exactly, So there you go. AnyWho, All right, So
seventeen U, it's gonna be a lot of fun. Those
start tomorrow, folks, They start tomorrow. Please if you. If
you got a comment, please share it below. We'd love
to see that as well. Also, starting tomorrow are all
three of the zone tournaments in UH in the nineteen

(28:51):
U and we're gonna start with Zone one and Zone one.
When I saw it, I was just like, I mean, Lord,
have mercy. I don't know if you can if you
get out of this. Are you gonna be are you

(29:11):
gonna uh? Are you gonna be healthy enough to get
to the state championship?

Speaker 2 (29:18):
Man?

Speaker 3 (29:19):
My goodness. Uh, let's start with the stars side that
pool is jeff City, Washington, and Saint Charles. Uh, Saint Charles,
I think they got an uphill climb, but Washington, here
we go. Jeff City. Let's start with jeff City on
that side. Coach Kyle. They two seventy e r a,

(29:43):
ninety four runs against, one hundred and ten base on balls,
one hundred and ninety three. K's a point two oh
eight opponent a batting average.

Speaker 1 (29:52):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (29:53):
That staff is is really good.

Speaker 2 (29:57):
Yeah, Yeah, they're getting after it. You know, it's well
and I'm just kind of looking through here. There's a
lot of good pitching stuffs in in that zone, so
you know, it's it's gonna be a grind. You know.

Speaker 3 (30:19):
That's that's pretty impressive, I know, right, I mean one
hundred and ninety three k's uh, you know, my goodness.
So you they got dudes that got a lot of
swing and miss uh. You've scored a They've scored one
hundred and seventy eight runs, coach Boyer, and they only
gave up ninety four. That is a huge differential.

Speaker 1 (30:43):
Yeah, and I know that the last week they shut
out the Sixers back in a doubleheader, one nothing, six nothing.
Like the same thing with the seventeen new team they got.
They got kids from Halias. I know they also got
the Saint Elizabeth kids. I think they even have some
kids from maybe South Callaway as well. I know that

(31:06):
the the Edwards kid that or not the Edwards kid,
the Williams kid from Saint Elizabeth. I believe he's going
to UCN and he was one of the big players
on their state championship team, and that they have a
lot of talent. I already mentioned the talent in that area.
But you just look at the amount of guys that

(31:27):
have pitched for him and thrown it looks like about
fifteen sixteen guys. I've thrown out at least over five innings.
So even if you get in a jam or getting
to pinch late, they're gonna have guys that have some
sort of experience and probably through much more innings for
their high school team. So will you talk about tradition?
Already Post five has got a strong tradition. There were
another team that when I used to play Legion, they

(31:48):
would always be a tough matchup. So, like I said,
deep talent, deep pitching, and strong baseball roots in that area.

Speaker 3 (31:57):
So well, speaking of strong pitching, your boys are representing
pretty well. I know they they they got they lost
the doubleheader, but you know the Sixers with a one
nine to two e R team e R A team
e R that's sub two folks team e R AH

(32:19):
only fifty three runs allowed, UH, seventy six base on balls,
two hundred and seven ks UH an opponent batting average
of one ninety five. You know, to me, that's the
best pitching staff of everybody there, even in this whole zone.

(32:43):
I watched we we live streamed the championships last year.
I think they got something to prove. It was a
heck of a championship game against Alsbury last year. Uh,
do you think these guys are primed for that, coach Boyer.

Speaker 1 (33:00):
Yeah, I mean we talked about pitching for sure, like
you started. They have my one A, one B, one
C on their staff, and then they also got a
kid from Western Cooper Harvey, who through the majority of
their innings the last four years. He's going in acc
with a few of my guys. Him and jack kind
of get the most of the innings at the top.

(33:24):
But I know for a fact, Jackson, Mitch, and Kate
can all throw and against any opponent and be successful.
They have some other guys in there that are sneaky
that have thrown a lot of innings. That Burns kid
from Making has a little funky delivery and he's hard,
hard to hit off. And the walimate kid from Sentreya
is also also pretty crappy. The easily kid from Southern

(33:47):
Boone hasn't thrown as many innings. I could see him
thrown a little bit more in the postseason. He's started
a lot of innings for Southern Boone and big games
postseason games. He's thrown against big teams like you know,
like US Blayer Oks teams like that. It's gonna be
kind of the story of how our season was. If
the hitting is there, then they can take the pressure

(34:09):
off the pitchers.

Speaker 2 (34:10):
They'll be fine.

Speaker 1 (34:11):
I will say the one thing that this team has
that I mean I'm biased, but Drew Smothers is their
catcher this year. He was our catcher as a sophomore.
He played the club circuit the last couple of years,
and he can throw it well, and and he's he's
been he's bat in three seventy three and he's first
on the team in hits right now. And I think

(34:32):
he's been hitting in that five range on their team,
and he kind of came into his own at the
end of our season, and I think he's I think
it's huge for them because I know how.

Speaker 2 (34:42):
He works with our pitchers.

Speaker 1 (34:43):
Obviously he's working with a lot of our pitchers, but
as well as Cooper, I mean, his.

Speaker 2 (34:47):
Dad was a baseball coach.

Speaker 1 (34:49):
I know a lot of them are smart, baseball minded kids,
so they they have what it takes to when this zone,
they just you know, you got to go out and
next cute and play their Brandon Baseball.

Speaker 3 (35:03):
Cedelia Travelers, Connor Spinagele. He's had that team playing well
for as long as I've been watching, you know, paying
attention to American Legion baseball coach Zimmerman. That group. You're
familiar with them a lot. You've got some kids there, whatnot.
Talk to us about the pitching staff there.

Speaker 2 (35:25):
Yeah, so another deep staff. I'm looking here, and you
got ten guys that threw ten innings or more over
the summer, you know, and so a little bit of
that is by design, a little bit of that is
a necessity, different things like that. But they're they're led
by Gabe Berry and Brandon Eads, which are two guys

(35:46):
out of Otterville, which is, you know, small class one
school here about fifteen to twenty minutes away from Sedelia.
But they can really throw it. They've got some velocity,
they're able to mix pitches and then you know, you
kind of just go down the list. Jaydon Archbek he
was a guy for us in the spring that threw

(36:07):
really well and that has continued into the summer. But
he also catches, and so he's kind of had to
take on a little bit more of the catching role
and hasn't been able to get on the mound as
much as as maybe he or the team would like.
But they're not necessarily a team that's gonna just blow
you away, but they're gonna throw a lot of strikes,

(36:28):
and you know, that's that's the name of the game.
You get the ball in the strike zone and and
a lot of times the hitters are gonna get themselves out.
And so that's what this team does a really good
job of. I think they've got a teamy ra of
right around three three point six, you know, so they're
they're really holding their own. But like I said, it's

(36:49):
not not necessarily a group of guys that's just gonna
stand up there and blow you away and strike you out.
Per se. They they only have one hundred and eighty
seven strikeouts on the season, which is, you know, still
very nice, but it's it's not necessarily gonna kind of
wow you or blow you away. But they're consistent and

(37:10):
and they have guys that are tough, and they compete,
and when they're not when their numbers called, they get
up there and they have confidence in themselves to get
the job done.

Speaker 3 (37:20):
I got a little ahead of myself, folks. That's zone two,
So DALYs in zone two. So we'll come back to that.
But I want to finish on the stripe side, Alsbury.
As we talked about Mobiley there, Washington's on the star side,
Saint Peter's. Uh, folks, I've had Jeff City, Washington, Elsbury, Mobley,
Saint Peter's top seven in different areas. That's that's that's

(37:45):
five of the top seven teams in this state in
my power rankings. Youth baseball Midwest Ellsbury folks. Uh, from
last year, they brought a lot of those guys came back.

Speaker 1 (37:59):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (37:59):
You know you're talking about the kid that's going to
ucm Avan Weaver came back. He pitched at you see
him last year. He's back there. Timmy Emmons, a kid
that is just actually coming in. He's going to be
a senior in high school this year. Mid upper eighties
guy good curveball. They added him along with DJ Barf,

(38:24):
Brady Creech. You got Gavin Woodson coming back. That came
back this year. He was at Mineral Area.

Speaker 2 (38:32):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (38:33):
You had all these guys come back to this squad.
A two seven sixty r tem e r A two
hundred and sixty, two hundred and sixty eight k's with
one twenty two runs against. They played thirty seven thirty
eight games this team is. They're there. They're good. They've

(38:56):
got They've got dudes everywhere base folks. Warren Conrad kid
from Winfield.

Speaker 2 (39:04):
Going on.

Speaker 3 (39:05):
I can't remember exactly where he's going, but see if
I can find that out. Elsberry is primed there. It's
gonna be tough. I think Washington, that one's gonna be interesting.
Uh A two four six e r a sixty eight
runs against a two two five OBA opponent's batting average.

(39:28):
Drew Ecoff, Uh, Andrew Elbert, Lane, Malincrott, a lot of
Borgia Washington guys. Like we talked about Colton Carrier from Washington.
Drew Ecoff's the shortstop there. He's played with them for
quite some time, a heck of a good player. I
think they may be a little more Ben Galinas too.
From Washington. They may be a little undermanned on the

(39:51):
mound in my estimation for what I see here. Saint
Peter's the same. I think a little both Washington and
and Saint Peter's can hit. Saint Peter's is a lot
of Fort Zumwalt's kids. I'm very familiar with Fort m
Walt North kids. Uh, But I just think both of

(40:12):
those teams are a little undermanned on the mound. I
think jeff City Ellsbury pitching wise, are the top two
teams there, so I can see both of those. I
can see those teams there as the the the ones
coming out of those pools and into the championship there.

(40:35):
That's that's one man's opinion, guys, That's what I see.

Speaker 2 (40:41):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (40:42):
Any thoughts as before we move on there, guys, I.

Speaker 2 (40:46):
Mean, obviously I'm gonna I'm gonna pick my guys, but.

Speaker 1 (40:53):
I don't think I could talk to them for a
while if I didn't. But I will say that a
lot of the names that you mentioned from the Ellsbury
and Washington teams, I follow my guys summer season, so
I see those names and some of the names you mentioned,
it seemed like the same guys that my guys have
played for the last few summers. So, and I know

(41:15):
a few of my guys it's their last year playing Legion,
and I know how important their high school season is.
A lot of the guys that my guys are playing
with on the Sixers they played with on travel ball
since they've been little guys, so it means just as
much for them, and some of them are going to
go play with each other next year, and they may
see see, but this is the last time some of

(41:35):
them have ever played together, so I know it means
a lot to them. So hopefully they can get it done.
And they've fallen short last year to Ellsbury in the
state title, I believe. I know they played in the zone,
but I believe it's in the state title as well,
So I know it means a lot to them. And
I know that a lot of those teams right there

(41:56):
in that zone I've gotten the better of each other
the last few years, So there's gonna be some serious
bragging rights to have it comes out of the zone
for sure.

Speaker 2 (42:04):
Oh yeah, Kyle, I just gonna say, I mean, there's
gonna be a lot of really good baseball in that tournament.
You can just see by looking at the stats and
hearing about the names and things like that. And you know,
you get into this time of the summer and you know,
these are seventeen eighteen year old kids, and some of

(42:29):
them might want to be done and might want to
be ready to have the rest of their summer, and
you battle that a little bit as well, and so
you know, I think the team that can be motivated
enough in the team that wants to keep playing. I
think that's gonna be what kind of wins the day?
You know, when you got teams that are so evenly matched.

Speaker 3 (42:50):
Absolutely, And you know, here's the thing, folks, Most people
don't know this, but here you get out of zones,
you go and you win a state title, and I
think has to be there's got I agree. I love
that point. The motivation. What are you doing? What are
you playing for? I think it's cool. What American Legion

(43:10):
does you know? If these teams win zones, they go
to state from state. If you win that state, they
come get you in a bus. You're not paying for
this American Legion pace and drives you now here in Missouri.
It's not gonna be too far because you're going to
Washington because the Mid South Regional is Washington, Missouri, which

(43:32):
I just want to say, we will be live streaming
the Mid South Regional this year as well from Washington,
so make sure you tune in looking forward to it.
Seven states Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee. A missing one.
Did I say Kansas? I did, Louisiana, Louisiana Mississippi. That's one.

(43:57):
I didn't say Missippi, Mississippi.

Speaker 2 (44:00):
Well, if you.

Speaker 3 (44:01):
Win that regional, they come fly you. You're not paying for it,
they come fly you to Shelby, North Carolina for the
World Series, which is shown on ESPN. Why would Why
wouldn't you want to do that?

Speaker 2 (44:17):
Oh? Absolutely? I mean it's an experience.

Speaker 3 (44:19):
That right, And in the winner the World Series gets
a trip to the World Series. They're introduced at the
World Series. It's a great come on man, you know
I I think this is one of the coolest things,
uh in baseball, is this opportunity. You gotta earn it.
You gotta earn it. But you are you gotta you

(44:41):
gotta keep that motivation. What can you do and keep
that keep that thing playing. I'm not counting out Moberley either,
coach just an f y.

Speaker 1 (44:50):
I I was going to.

Speaker 3 (44:56):
Uh, you know, Elsberry's got some offense. I like Moberley's
offense as well. It's gonna be tight. I I think
you can you know, you can make a case for
all of these teams. It's just that good. So, uh,
Zone two a little more cut and dry. If Sedelia
and the Mule Club don't come out of this. That's

(45:17):
gonna be a huge upset, wouldn't you say, Coach Zimmerman.

Speaker 2 (45:21):
Yeah, yeah, that that would be my thought process. I mean,
you know, maybe fight could could make a little noise
and and cause some trouble. I know they've played the
Travelers pretty close, you know, a couple of different times.
But my my, you know, my pick would be, you know,

(45:42):
Sedelia and Mule.

Speaker 3 (45:43):
Club because this is more of the traditional uh double
elimination bracket. They they're they're still in that thing. We
haven't talked about the Mule Club. They got some outstanding players,
Eli Anderson. I know I'm going to butcher Sam's last
name uh Slabazaski or something like that. I'm not quite
sure is that how you pronounce it.

Speaker 2 (46:06):
I honestly don't know, but I know that I do
not like facing him when when we're on the other
side of the of the field so he can really
get after it.

Speaker 3 (46:16):
Well, he's going to Jeff co for a reason, right,
That's right, there you go, Trent Gallagher. Another kid heading
the mineral area, Charlie Morgan. Charlie Morgan is a tough,
tough out.

Speaker 2 (46:33):
I mean, the kid can really play shortstop too.

Speaker 3 (46:36):
He's very good, big physical kid for playing shortstop too. Right,
So the Mule Club, I don't have a lot of
information on the Mule Club as far as stats or
anything that way. I just know these kids. I've seen
these kids play. I've been around them fifteen ten and one.

(46:59):
I think they got off to a little bit of
a slow start, played a little bit better down the stretch,
and so it'll be interesting to see. But honestly, you know,
no offense to the Owls six six six or you
know Fike oak Grove. Oak Grove's been in the state

(47:20):
championship the last two years. But I just think talent wise,
they're a bit down this year.

Speaker 2 (47:27):
Yeah, I think, you know, they they've got a lot
of tradition. I know, you know, they've had some really
good talent go through there through the years. You know,
I think maybe it's a little bit of a of
a down, a dip. You know. I'm sure they'll probably
be back here soon, but I think, you know, from
what I've seen and from what I've kind of witnessed,

(47:49):
it's a down, down summer for them.

Speaker 3 (47:51):
Yeah, yeah, coach boy, your thoughts on this one.

Speaker 1 (47:56):
I'll be a little bit of a Homer here, but
the Travelers beat the Sixers. Uh scored three runs in
the bottom of the seventh on Saturday to beat the Sixers.
So we'll go with the We'll go with Sedalia. And
I know that they played the Mule Club earlier in
the year and beat them, So we'll go We'll go
with the trailer. Not just because coaches on here is
just today, okay, but is this is this played in

(48:19):
Warrensburg or Sedaria.

Speaker 2 (48:21):
I know they have a lot of it'll be it'll
be at Warrensburgh, gotcha.

Speaker 1 (48:24):
They got a lot of nice tur fields of them
that way, so I was just curious for that.

Speaker 3 (48:28):
So yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2 (48:30):
They're gonna they'll be at the high school over there.

Speaker 3 (48:33):
Yeah, that's that's a nice facility over there.

Speaker 2 (48:36):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (48:36):
Absolutely So Zone two, I think it's pretty pretty straightforward there.
Zone four. I don't know how much you guys know
about that. Part of it's you got a lot of
the you got like West County, it's District ten, District thirteen,

(48:56):
fourteen tradition. You look at Festus Jackson. Jackson's been at
the state tournament for the last three years. They got
a few guys that were still eligible coming back Devin Black,
who's coming back. I remember seeing him three years ago

(49:16):
at Liberty Park with Jackson there. They had a really
good team finished I think second or third, I can't
remember exactly in that one, I think it was third
behind Washington and Sedelia. But this bracket is I thought

(49:37):
Eureka was gonna get but Kirkwood made a run in
District ten knocked Eureka out and Kirkwood Post one fifty
six got a shout out to Chris Copeland. His group
over there did a job. And they've got some guys.
Kirkwood has some players, uh there pitching staff. We'll see

(50:03):
they've got some guys. Peer Sturgeon is on that staff.
It'll be interesting to see if Pierce is throwing in
this tournament. Kid from Webster Groves, one of their stud lefties. Man,
this kid can pitch and pitch for Dave Dave Wiggins
over there Webster Groves. I like Peer Sturgeon. If he's
on the mound with those guys. Uh, that's a formidable group,

(50:27):
a formidable group because he can he can flat whip it.
But there t e r A four seven eight. I
did get a chance to communicate a little bit with
Chris Copeland, and he said they he finally got all
his guys together at one time, and that makes a

(50:47):
huge difference, doesn't it.

Speaker 2 (50:48):
Coach Zimmery, Yeah, absolutely, you know that. That's another thing
that you you battle all summer long, is vacations and
family plans and things like that. So yeah, you do
run into a lot of situations where you might play
a team one week and they have a certain lineup

(51:08):
that they run out there, and you play on the
next week and they run out a completely different lineup,
and you know, so when you're able to be at
full strength, it makes a big difference. And uh, you know,
so the hope is is that you know, everybody is
at full strength when it matters, and and so it's
not surprising to hear that once they got everybody together

(51:30):
they performed, you know, because it it's tough. You know,
I've seen that with the Travelers, both junior and senior.
You know, you go into tournaments and you're you're missing
a picture, you're missing your middle of the order bat
and and it really changes the dynamic of the club
and and how you approach day to day activities, and so.

Speaker 3 (51:56):
Yeah, it makes an impact. I know, Nikola Copeland, who's
uh Chris's son. He's hitting five to twelve on the
season and leads that offense. And they got a team
batting average Kirkwood does three to oh one. They've had
forty four extra base hits with one hundred and eighty
six runs scored, walked at one hundred and eight times,

(52:17):
struck out one hundred and twelve.

Speaker 2 (52:18):
That's not bad.

Speaker 3 (52:19):
Ninety five stolen bases, which they're running the bags pretty
well offensively. They've got enough tools to make this work
down through here. Uh, they got guys three forty one
Nick Mueller, I think is Ishiyama, another kid from Webster
Groves hitting threeh eight. I think he played shortstop for

(52:42):
the Statesman over there. He's probably playing shortstop for Kirkwood.
They've got talent, They've got some guys. They got to
face Festest. Coach Boyer, you've probably played Festest over the
years in your career, and they've always been a tough out.

Speaker 2 (52:58):
Yeah. I played.

Speaker 1 (52:59):
I also played at the couple of guys in college
that were two five, three guys, and they they've been
very passionate about their Legion team. I mean I took
my legion seriously, but these guys took it to a
whole new level. They have a they have a strong
tradition over there. I'm pretty sure they've went to the
World Series a few times, and so I know that

(53:20):
I know that it's supported to him. I was the
one thing I think is gonna be interesting about this zone,
and I was just looking through a couple of these
teams game Changer and they've played each other a lot.
So where we talked about having your full strength, some
of these guys might be having have some arms that
these guys haven't seen as well that they could be
could be bringing to the zone tournament that could make

(53:42):
a difference. And seeing a team a lot can can
be a big strength. It also can be it can
hurt you sometimes, especially if it's a team you beat
a lot. You see it in the high school level,
especially in our area. We faced teams sometimes four times
when we get to districts. So anytime that you you
have that knowledge of a team, it could it could

(54:03):
benefit you or hurt you.

Speaker 2 (54:04):
So I honestly think that just.

Speaker 1 (54:07):
Doing a little research, there's quite a few teams that
could come out of this zone. And it's not the
same as some of the other zones we talked about.
It could just be a team that gets hot at
the right time. And I'm sure coach knows as well
as if you're hot in the postseason, you're usually the
best team.

Speaker 3 (54:20):
So oh yeah, I perfect and I love that. I
agree with you. I had this conversation with Chris Copeland,
you know, trying to talk to as many guys and
seeing the field. I don't think this is a runaway
by anybody. I don't see a lot of I don't
see a lot of double digit wins or a double

(54:43):
digit losses, run scored, no blowouts. This is going to
be a tight, tight u and could end up being
you know, that extra game in the championship too. This
is one of the toughest zones we had well as far.
I shouldn't say that Zone one is pretty gonna be.
These two are going to be the same. Zone one,

(55:04):
Zone four tight all the way. Jackson may have a
little bit more pitching, we'll see, but fastest from what
I was seeing down the line there, I'll show. This
is what's gonna be interesting to me. Guys when you

(55:25):
look at the fastest group, Oliver Klump, Jack Clump, Devin Black,
those guys, I'm very familiar with Brady Nolan. Do you
guys know who Brady Nolan is?

Speaker 2 (55:37):
My name sounds very familiar. I'm sure I've read it
a several times.

Speaker 3 (55:43):
Centerfielder for Festus heading to uh Crowder.

Speaker 2 (55:53):
Yes, okay, that's why. So I'm a I'm a ghost writer.
So that's why I would have heard his name.

Speaker 3 (55:59):
Uh. Brady Nolan put up some video game numbers this year, guys,
I mean video game numbers. I think he was close
to like fifteen hundred ops. Okay, holy caw, yeah yeah,
and you gotta you gotta know, I mean fastest class five.
They're not playing Joe Schmo's down there. They're they're facing

(56:22):
they're they're facing dudes, and this kid is full real.
You got Brady Nolan there, Mason Shermer, pitcher of the
lefty out of fastest, uh State champion, He's on that squad,
this team you don't want to count fastest out. I
could see them coming out of this winning his zone.

(56:43):
Brady Nolan offensive juggernaut. So again, like I said, I
don't think Jackson is a clear favorite. I don't think
there's a real clear favorite other than I think Jackson
and I would say that you've got maybe a little
more talent on the fastest squad, so that should be

(57:04):
interesting there. But uh, you get two teams into the state,
so you get into that that final too. You've got
a spot in state, which you know, it's cool, but
I think guys want to win zone. If you're in zones,
Coach Boyer and you you're there, you want to win it,
don't you.

Speaker 2 (57:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (57:24):
I mean we just mentioned about how the team that's
the hottest in the postseason is usually the best team,
And I mean I think any of these teams will
take an extra week playing with their buddies in summer.

Speaker 2 (57:36):
Boss of them, maybe not.

Speaker 1 (57:37):
But I would say that they they would, they would
take it, but they want to go win it. And
then some of these zones do you. There's a good
chance that you face that team again at some point
once you get to State, and you you kind of
want that upper hand as well, and that confidence going
going into the next week of the season, and who
knows for some of these teams that could get it

(57:58):
could get easier when you get to the state too,
So I think some of the zones are pretty loaded.

Speaker 3 (58:07):
Oh man, uh. Coach Zimmerman final thoughts here, Who do
you think is gonna come out of this one?

Speaker 2 (58:12):
Man? Uh? I mean I kind of I'm with you,
I kind of lean you know, Festus or Jackson. I
think it will kind of come down to that. I
mean again, at the end of the day, having that camaraderie,
having that that desire, having that drive, the familiarity amongst

(58:33):
the team. You know, I think that really kind of
plays itself out this time of year because, like like
coach mentioned, you know, sometimes you have teammates that you
just you don't want to be away from it. You
want to you want to make it last as long
as you can. You want to be together as much

(58:53):
as you can. And then and then other teams just
aren't like that. They you know, they go their own
way when or they leave the field. And it's it's
not that one is wrong and one is right. That's
just the way that it happens. And and so typically,
you know, whether it's spring, whether it's summer, you tend
to see the teams that want to stay together and

(59:16):
want that extra day or that extra week. Those teams,
you know, they find a way. It may not look pretty,
it may not look perfect, but they tend to find
a way just because that that strong connection that they have.

Speaker 3 (59:31):
I back to you know, and I do I think
you're gonna see I think could sneak up and take
some take advantage of some of that. But I do
think you see Jackson and Fast is coming out of
that back to his own one. Whoever is is the

(59:53):
two seed in that stripes bucket is probably gonna have
to face Jeff City. That's gonna be a tough gig
getting out of that. Uh you know who's got the
arms for that kind of depth and movement that way? Uh,
that's gonna be interesting. That's why I see you know

(01:00:15):
Elsberry prop but see Elsberry Moberly. I think they have.
Moberley's got the best pitching depth if you look at it.
I mean even their numbers show it. So I think
you got you gotta look at that. And when you
start getting these tight games, I think you see Moberly
and uh, Jeff City coming out of this one. See

(01:00:40):
you didn't think I hadn't been my pitch, That's what
I see.

Speaker 1 (01:00:46):
I think I know how they're gonna pitch this one.
And I think that they're gonna go I mean, obviously
it's gonna be hard for me to pick against them
in any capacity, but I do think that they're gonna
go in as the is the one, and I think
they'll be set up good in the bracket, just because
we talked about the pitching depth and it'll be this

(01:01:10):
is an interesting setup. I kept looking at this back
because they're not all the same and you could go
too or no, and you could go hot into the
bracket and then you could lose the first.

Speaker 2 (01:01:19):
Game and then you're done and be done.

Speaker 1 (01:01:21):
Yeah, I think that, and I get it because our districts,
you lose one game, you're done. You could get upset.
But just it's it's an interesting setup and I like it.
I like seeing different brackets, and typically postseason other than
high school baseball is double elimination, so.

Speaker 2 (01:01:38):
It's a fun.

Speaker 1 (01:01:38):
I think it's fun to change it up a little bit,
especially with just.

Speaker 2 (01:01:42):
How good this zone is. It's it's fun to see
how it's set up.

Speaker 3 (01:01:47):
I I just like I like the way, so I
like it when it features pitching depth because that's the
thing within high school baseball now, the role for that
baseball is is such a pitching dominated sport. And you know,
I grew up Tommy LaSora, I'm a Dodgers fan. Always
was like that is pitching a defense and hit a tank.

Speaker 2 (01:02:08):
You know, we win.

Speaker 3 (01:02:13):
So and so those are the things that are very interesting.
So yeah, this is the one though. Man, it's just painful.
I think that I really like all these teams in there.
A lot of really good baseballs and a lot of
good quality kids. I mean, yes, that's the tough thing
for me is you know some of these kids, man,
it's gonna go break their heart. And that's always what's

(01:02:36):
tough for me because I've watched a lot of these
kids over the last three years, not only in in
a legion, but in high school baseball, and uh, you
know that's that's always the thing for me. It's it's
it's tough. It's tough. Uh again, you know Zone two, Yeah,

(01:02:56):
Mule Club Travelers unless something you know, drastic happens. So
I think that's what you're gonna see in the state.
We're gonna find out. Got a lot of stuff coming up.
I'm playing on heading over Saturday to Silax to watch
some of these Zone one baseball. I'm looking forward to that.
It's gonna be a lot of fun. Guys, go ahead.

Speaker 1 (01:03:21):
I was really I really up said I can't go
over and watch them this weekend because my cousin's getting
married in Wisconsin, so I'll mean.

Speaker 2 (01:03:27):
I go up north.

Speaker 1 (01:03:28):
But luckily I talked to a few of them this
week and told them that I won't be very happy
with them if they don't make it to the next round,
so I don't get to watch them play next week.

Speaker 2 (01:03:36):
So that was I guess my pet talk to them.

Speaker 3 (01:03:40):
There you go, right, Oh, man, gentlemen, I appreciate h
that was a great conversation. Really enjoyed that. Thank you
very much.

Speaker 2 (01:03:54):
Yeah, thank you, thank you, thank you. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:03:57):
And folks, just remember next week, starting on the twenty fourth,
we will be in Sidalia. These two gentlemen will be
joining us on the call, working with as part of
our broadcast team. I'm very excited about that, and we're
looking forward to bringing you the Missouri American Legion Baseball

(01:04:18):

Legion Mid South Regional from Washington MOUE at Ronsick Park,
Great Venue. Looking forward to it. Thanks for tuning in.
Appreciate it greatly. Like, hey, if you like what we're doing,

(01:04:38):
support us subscribe. Hit that dinger next to it. It's
not a home run, but it's better. It gets notifications
for upcoming episodes, just like this more baseball talk. We
appreciate it very much. Everybody have a great day in
the Lord. All you pitchers. Coach Simmerman, give pictures, some advice.

Speaker 2 (01:05:00):
A rights man, get the ball over the plate. Let
everything else happen. Get the ball over the plate, and
then we'll live with the results.

Speaker 3 (01:05:07):
And you hitters. Coach Boyer, what do you tell the hitters.

Speaker 1 (01:05:11):
Oh, one of the pitchers, he had the easy one
the last time. You have me, I told him, I said,
not uh, swing at the first pitch fastball.

Speaker 2 (01:05:20):
So that was my advice last time. So we'll stick
with her.

Speaker 3 (01:05:23):
There you go. It's good advice. That's good advice. We'll
see you all next time.
