Speaker 1 (00:00):
M definitely a different type of process.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Cut down or freeze, you know, being a coach's son.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
Jackson, of course. Uh, they keep reaching A why's stuck
in the space? A hit five pitch? Oh my, Hello everyone,
welcome inside the Red Earth Production studios for this edition
of ybm cast powered by Game seven Baseball Game seven
(00:44):
baseball dot Com. Today on Baseball Talk, we're bringing it
as always, joined by the Guru himself, mister Kevin Moulder.
Kevin House called buddy. We haven't sat in this uh
space in quite some time.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
Yeah, I've been busy with the summer and yeah, out
of town a couple of weeks with the future games
and uh super sophomore games and uh well and behold
the we're staring right back at the fall, aren't we
coming up?
Speaker 3 (01:17):
Yes, we are speaking of fault. Make sure you go
to Game seven baseball dot com. Uh, first weekend after
Labor Day, fall ball begins there it is. Make sure
you get and look, don't make it more than it is.
Go get some go, get your buddies, Go get some
t shirts that say dirt bags or snot rockets, whatever
(01:39):
you want. Go have some fun, get your swings in.
Work on some of those things and enjoy the fall, right, Kevin.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
Absolutely, that's the way we roll.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
Uh, Kevin, you're talking about all the stuff you've been
got going on. You got an event coming up as
well here right to kick off the fall.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
Yeah, excited about it. Are The Missouri Fall Games is
always Ah, It's been one of our bigger events of
the year.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
It is September sixth at Atkins Field in Columbia, Missouri.
So we got you know, last year we had about
two hundred players there. We used five fields and put
them through a pro style workout and finish up with
the age appropriate game, break them down by classes and
(02:29):
play a game there. And we've had good response from
college coaches and a lot of good players come out
of that event the past few years. So excited for
that and we're still open for registration for that event
coming up here in about two and a half weeks.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
Very good. We are looking forward. We're going to roll
out there, do some interviews, meet some kids. It's I
met Scott Yule, the head coach over Dumsel, for the
first time at that Fall Games a few years ago.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
Yes, that's right, it was.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
That's always interesting because I think This one's gonna be
fun because I'm seeing a lot of twenty eights, a
lot of names. Honestly, Kevin, I hadn't seen.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
Well that That is the great thing about this event.
And you know, especially with the twenty eights, a lot
of them it's their very first time doing an event,
So it is fun to learn about some of those
younger kids. The twenty eights. You'll get some twenty nine's
in there, and then the older kids you typically have
(03:30):
seen before, but seeing the progress they've made over the summer,
and you know, it falls interesting. You get you get
a lot of guys, but then also some guys are
out because of football and whatnot. That being said, it
is on a Saturday, so hopefully that's not a false
sport conflict, but I get it, like at the same time,
(03:50):
there's times guys are focusing on their false sport at
the same time.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
Absolutely, I always like this event because we get a
chance to look and I hope we're getting better at
this from the youth baseball Midwest side, but gives us
a chance to look at you know, as we start
looking at high school teams, I start looking at, you know,
who are the team's gonna be beat to beat. You know,
(04:15):
is there some sophomore or junior that is gonna jump
off the page for us and maybe put a team
over the top.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Right, Yeah, yeah, I know you always like to start
talking about like what team, and I'm always hey, hey,
I'd like to see these kids play. But truthfully, in
the fall is when you start to begin formulating, Okay,
that kid's gonna be at you know, whatever school and
oh man, they got five really good guys. Oh man,
(04:44):
they're gonna be They're in for a good spring. Now
you start to forming in the spring. We all know
players are often made in that offseason time when we
hit you know, mid to late October, when we're and
fall ball down, and then building into the high school season,
kids rogue in the weight room who's putting in the work,
(05:08):
And then you see a lot of changes and often
significant jumps from players in that February time frame, which
is kind of what I like to talk about those
teams because then I have a somewhat educated opinion on that.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
Well, and that's the thing, you know, you're we we
always I always take a look at who's coming back.
That's the first thing, honestly, I've spent a lot of
time over the past since we've kind of slowed down. Uh,
And before I get too far filed, I want to
do this. As you can see the hats here, I
want to give a big shout out to the Moberly Sixers.
It's been a group I've been watching. Kevin knows this.
(05:47):
We've talked about that group for quite some time, not
only high school, but in American Legion Baseball. We had
a fantastic end of the summer with American Legion Baseball.
We we we live streamed the state championships from Sedelia.
And if you get a chance to go watch a
ball game at the what they did, uh, they renovated
(06:11):
Liberty Park there in Siedelia. It's fantastic. It is a
fantastic venue. They did a great job with that park.
It's got a great feel. I know State Fair College
plays there if you're going to State Fair, but I
think they're building a park on campus.
Speaker 2 (06:30):
They're moving on on campus facility this season. Before they
had point at that facility and there's a the cool
old time feel park.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
Yeah porch, yes, which makes everybody kind of swing for
the fences. But it's funny but it's a fantastic venue.
We were there uh Moberly, uh when it is a favorite.
They took care of business one state championships, and this year,
for the first time, we got a chance to live
(07:04):
stream the Mid South Regionals, which was Tennessee, Uh, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas,
Oklahoma and Missouri and Kansas. There it is those were
the seven.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
That Louisiana group was loaded, wasn't it. Yeah? Man?
Speaker 3 (07:22):
Uh they lost in the semifinals to League City, Texas
and then uh last.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
Night in the World Series.
Speaker 3 (07:31):
Yes, the World Series. Sorry, yes, and then uh Chesapeake
Virginia uh beat leg City League City last night to
h win the World Series. So congratulations uh to chess
Peake Virginia for winning the I think it's a cool,
it's a very it's a it's a great experience. Uh
and and I hope it's something we're gonna stay involved in.
(07:53):
I hope, uh, you know, long term, it was you
could you know, you could watch uh the semifinals. I
watched it all on ESPN U. So that's pretty good,
you know. And I think as a nineteen year old player,
I know sometimes you know you're out, you've maybe even
played some other types of club ball, but man, find
(08:15):
a legion. So if you can get your buddies, if
you can get a legion team together, that's pretty good
and go play for something like that. It's still it's
very good competition. As Kevin said, alluded to that Louisiana team,
they had four or five D one players on their
three kids going to Louisia. That are two of them
are going to Louisiana Tech one is committed. Their leadoff
(08:37):
Cole Snell. The kid playing third base case Jorden, Oh
my gosh, and he was playing hurt. He rolled his
ankle before when they were warming up for the Mid
South regionals, didn't play played on a bum ankle, and
(08:58):
I think the Semis and Chatampionships in the Mid South
hit a foul ball right off the top of that
bumb ankle. And I talked to him afterwards, I said, man,
he goes and I I wasn't coming out, just got
to play through it. Gotta love that. And he's just
he's just going into his senior year, so he's got
(09:21):
a lot pretty good road there. So I think it's
a cool atmosphere. Those kids from Chesapeake, Virginia are going
to get a flight and a ride and a stay too.
I think it's Game three of the World Series where
they'll be introduced in the pregames. You know, as a
baseball player, I think sometimes we get caught up and
(09:44):
you know what we're gonna get ready to talk about,
which is the ultimate prize you want to get to
the MLB. Don't get me wrong, I understand all those things,
but sometimes some of these experience experiences you get a
chance to play for that you may not get a
chance to in any other situation, and I think sometimes
those things get overlooked. Kevin, don't you agree?
Speaker 2 (10:07):
No, absolutely agree and yeah, and even honestly, the guys
that move on from the you know, those legion teams
to play collegiately or even a select few professionally, they'll
look back on those years as some of those they're
more fun teams. They're more fun experiences with the game.
Speaker 3 (10:31):
Absolutely, And we got some great programs in the state
of Missouri. Met the new coach down at Festus. It's
all at Festus. Has been a They were the last
team to actually get into the World Series from Missouri
in twenty nineteen, and they've been a couple times. I
(10:52):
think it was twenty and nine and twenty nineteen. Alec
Cassenna is the new head coach down there. He was
he's a former draft picked as well, so he's down
there coaching that squad. And you got some quality coaches
running those programs, so it's not like, you know, they're
bringing kids into that program doing a nice job with that.
(11:14):
So there's plenty of options for kids to play, and
I think that's what's cool.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
Absolutely, And speaking of moving on, we've had a good
number of Missouri players selected in this year's summer MLB draft.
I know we wanted to get into some of that absolutely.
Speaker 3 (11:36):
You know, we're talking about the big time, right and
there's only a handful of people that really, you know,
get that opportunity and then out of that you have
the one finger that usually moves on. Yes, But here,
starting off Kevin and I, we're going to talk a
(11:58):
little bit about the there's a whether they were drafted
out of college or high school. These are kids from
Missouri who played high school baseball in Missouri that got
drafted this year. Starting with out of Wichita State, Nick Porter,
right handed right handed pitcher, junior out of least Summit West.
(12:20):
He was taken in the fifth round to the Houston Astros.
Speaker 2 (12:24):
Kevin Yeah, Nick Nick Potter.
Speaker 3 (12:29):
Potter, sorry, I didn't have a glass who.
Speaker 2 (12:31):
Also spent time at Crowder Community College, and so like
right off the bat, the top Missouri got a kid
with Missouri ties. I love bringing this up to everyone.
It's not where you start, it's where you finish. So
(12:53):
I'm just going back and looking at this. This kid
was ranked ninetieth in the two twenty twenty two class.
All right, so that means there was supposedly eighty nine
guys ranked ahead of them. Now, okay, maybe it's uh,
you know, there was an ini accurate ranking. I would
beg to differ. There was no Division ones that offered
(13:19):
him out of high school. He ended up going to
a junior college to start his four year career. This
kid six' five and now weighs one hundred and ninety. Pounds,
uh you, know, tall lean. Kid okay in high. School
good in high, school but was not on professional. Radars
(13:42):
wasn't on you, Know division one college's, radars wasn't on
Good division two. Radars chose to go to a junior,
college worked, hard three four years, later he ends up
getting the fruits of the labor and is the top
player drafted with ties from the state Of. Missouri so
really cool. Story, uh AND i just love talking about.
(14:04):
That it's you, know people get wrapped up in rankings and,
whatnot and you, know use them for the right, reasons
motivation and. Whatnot it's not the end all be. All
and here's a great story of a kid that put
in a bunch of, work got better and, developed continue to.
Develop when he was nineteen twenty twenty one years, old
(14:26):
goes back into the draft and gets shrafted out Of Wichita.
State so starting with the. Bank sorry to get off
on a.
Speaker 3 (14:32):
Soapbox oh, no, NO i that's exactly, Right. KEVIN i
love that played for COACH J. Meyer he was two
and oh to your, point he was two and oh
went twenty and a third innings a three seven eight
era not, horrible, right high school twenty Eight K'S.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
I would say twenty. Innings you said twenty innings in high. School,
yeah that means he was maybe the fourth pitcher on that.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
Team, yeah, yes you're.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
Right number one pitcher is gonna throw fifty to sixty,
five maybe even seventy innings In missouri.
Speaker 3 (15:08):
Depending upon how Your, yeah, Exactly, kevin, Absolutely and he
went To, crowder went To, crowder as you, said, uh
you know. That that to, ME i like that what you.
SAID i you can talk more and more about. THAT
i think that's. Perfect next Up Nathan, hall right handed,
(15:31):
pitcher a. Sophomore wait a, minute he went to A
d two. School oh, right uh you got you can
get drafted out of a division to, College.
Speaker 2 (15:50):
Kevin, NOW i Believe Central missouri had the most draft
picks of any college in the state Of missouri this
year with. Three and you, Know Central missouri has a
long history of pumping out draft. Picks one year they
had six selections in the top eleven. Rounds so certainly
(16:15):
your dreams can be realized to play professional baseball out
of a Good division two. Program and there is. STATISTICS
i saw it a couple of weeks. AGO i don't
have it offhand, here but they broke down the draft
By division, One division, Two division, Three juco high school
(16:36):
the numbers on that and AN ai and there was
players selected from each level of. Baseball, now as one might,
suspect the majority of the draft selections were out Of
division one baseball and high school, baseball but junior college
And division two in, particular we're well represented.
Speaker 3 (16:55):
There you Go nathan out Of liberty in the sixth
round to The New York. Mets Liberty High school has
always produced pretty good, Ballplayers. Kevin, yes they have Coach
Kurk bragg, yep, yep, yep. Yep and he HAD i
(17:17):
mean a little. Different he was honorable mention in twenty
twenty one and had a thirty two to nine, record
and he was on That class six state championship that,
season which is the one we saw that was Mill
brandt as, well, Right, yes, yeah So Nathan hall was
a big part of that state championship as. Well so
(17:38):
you got that winning. Pedigree man.
Speaker 2 (17:43):
Certainly gotta love that.
Speaker 3 (17:45):
STUFF i like. It he was in his first, year
it says he was not had a nine to two
era and fourteen appearance in, appearances but in twenty twenty
five he was one and zhero with a three point
zho seven striking out in nineteen walking seven and fourteen
(18:06):
and two. Thirds so congratulations to.
Speaker 2 (18:10):
In this is another kid that kind of found his
way in. College in high, school he considered himself more
of a positional player six, three one sixty. Five and you,
know you get to college and you figure, out, yeah
there's some good guys, here or, HEY i was a
good high school. Hitter we have this conversation all the, Time. Brian,
(18:32):
yeah but being a good high school hitter isn't the
same thing as being a good college. Hitter And i'm
not Suggesting nathan couldn't hit in. College i'm just pointing that.
Out that. Happens you see a kid that puts up
pretty good numbers in high, school but for whatever, reasons
the tools don't translate to the collegiate game or the professional.
Game So nathan found his way on the. Mound there you.
Speaker 3 (18:55):
Go AND i think those are conversations that are had
between the, coaches you, know where they see them fitting
into the team as. Well, correct, absolutely, Yes, yeah next
up the big. One we got to see this young man.
PITCH i Know kevin's very well acquainted With Kim lowman
(19:17):
out Of Fort Zumwolt. North we saw him at the
J C classic and he was he was still not
he was just still coming. OFF i think he said
he broke his. Hand he told me that after the
game he had had an injury to his. Hand he
was still coming back from, that working his way back through,
it went out and pitched five innings of just shut down.
(19:40):
Baseball tremendous young. MAN i really like his demeanor on
the mound afterwards and talking articulate. Kid enjoyed the discussion with.
Him he never he you, know you talk to certain,
kids you, know and he just never seemed to be
too overwhelmed by. Anything.
Speaker 2 (20:01):
Kevin, Yeah cam's another great story in kind of a
late bloomer in terms of high school, kids was relatively an.
UNKNOWN i still remember the first EVENT i saw him
That it was On Super Bowl sunday at The middleland
bandits scout, day and here's a, tall gangly kid that
(20:22):
came out and. Olive it was up to eighty eight
or eighty nine that, day and came down to the
future games that, summer and his star kept rising and.
Rising committed and then signed With miszoo and then came
out and had a you, know some kids will kind
of rest on the. Horse he kept getting better and
(20:43):
better into his senior. Year this summer or this spring
At Zoom north he was holding ninety ninety five and you,
know big projectable frame lean frame and should continue to.
Develop so you, know the top high school player selected
(21:04):
In missouri and did sign and got just about eight
hundred thousand, Dollars so good for, him and look forward
to following that in The New York mets.
Speaker 3 (21:15):
System that's too to the, WELL i, know you know
last year With Trey snyder was, Yeah matt's and now Cam.
Lowman SO i, mean you know that's how people start
rooting for, teams, Right, YES i love, That So i'm
(21:35):
looking forward to seeing. That hope HE i hope he
has a lot of. SUCCESS i let me ask you
and and you can't nobody can project, this BUT I
i don't know much about all the other stuff on the.
SIDE i just talked to people AND i and as
we walk through and talk with people and talk with,
(21:57):
people there's certain people that just strike me that seem
to be able to handle. Situations AND i think as
a young person eighteen years, old you get drafted into THE,
mlb there has to be a sense of maturity to
be able to go in and deal with grown, men
to deal with the level of commitment that it takes
(22:21):
you're walking into a high paying. Career is basically what you're,
doing AND i think we've got to look at it
in some ways in that.
Speaker 2 (22:31):
Respect, Correct, yeah it turns into a, job and there
are so many more pieces that go to it than
just the baseball aspect of. It you, know some of
the things you learn in, college now you're learning in
pro ball being away from home for the first, time
having to do your faund or you, know showing up on,
(22:51):
time not having mom and dad there to you, know
help you, along push, you make sure you're that type of.
Stuff and those are experiences that often time you kind
of learn as a you, know a freshman in college
and now you're you're learning that in pro. Ball so
it takes a mature, kid. Certainly and it's also part
(23:13):
of the recent college baseball has become very, popular even
with the pro, teams and you'll see the draft favor
guys with college experience at times is because it takes
variables out of. It, hey we know that kid can handle.
Himself he's been in real life scenario, stuff not talking. Baseball,
(23:36):
now just, hey if that if this kid could handle,
college he can handle you, know pro baseball from a living. Standpoint,
now whether he's good enough to make it on the baseball.
Field that's a different, story but it. Does that is
a piece of the equation that also goes often goes.
Overlooked that is a real that is a real piece of.
Speaker 3 (23:55):
It and and AND i think that's the. Thing you,
know maturity, wise you, know you're hundreds of thousands of?
Dollars how do you deal with? That are? You are
you confident enough in? Yourself AND i think that's where
something translates for, me is how confident are you as
a person that you can stand up, no this is
(24:16):
WHO i. Am this is HOW i make decisions and
be able to do, that BECAUSE i think that translates
to how you perform as a player as. Well there's
a lot of kids that don't really have a sense
of themselves period, anyway not. Yet they're they're kind of
just going through, it you, know and this and, that
and then all of a, sudden you're stuck in this.
Situation you're YOU'RE i shouldn't say, stuck but you're thrust
(24:41):
into a situation that you're having to make real grown up.
Decisions AND i know WHEN i was seventeen, EIGHTEEN i
didn't you, know we all look back and we go,
BOY i shouldn't have done, that, Right, yeah, absolutely SO
i think those are interest things when we're talking about the,
(25:01):
draft especially high school. Kids and that's WHY i enjoyed
the conversational part of the talking with these players and
getting to know them a little bit in those. Respects it's.
Interesting another young, man another left handed, pitcher shocker, uh
Sophomore TEXAS a AND m went to Ray, pack ray
(25:22):
Boor peculiar drafted in the ninth round by The. Marlins.
Uh Cayden.
Speaker 2 (25:27):
Wilson, Yeah, cayden you, know was on the scene last
with The College World. Series is also a future game.
Alum originally committed TO lsu and then there was a
coaching change there and found his way TO a AND
m and now a. Draft and, yeah being a pitcher
(25:49):
and also being a left hander also increases your odds
of being drafted.
Speaker 3 (25:53):
Certainly so it's interesting. TOO i think this is Always
cayden's father played for parts of four seasons with The
Baltimore orioles in the system from eighty five to eighty,
Eight SO i always think those are interesting things as
well when you have somebody who's kind of gone through
that process, already, Right, kevin.
Speaker 2 (26:16):
It's two things. There it's genetics number one and number
two just also working knowledge of what it takes and
to play at a certain. Level and Clearly caden's father
did a good job preparing. Him you, know it's a
(26:36):
hard path to navigate when you don't, know and when
you have a, guide if you, will there to help you,
along that can help put a player in a position to.
Speaker 3 (26:47):
Succeed you, know it's, funny you know genetics, first but
then you Have Ken Griffy junior who grew up in
the clubhouse of The Big Red. Machine.
Speaker 2 (26:59):
Yeah, there you think about that built in advantage, Certainly,
oh my.
Speaker 3 (27:06):
Goodness AND i don't. Know sometimes maybe we don't think about,
that but my, goodness That's barry bonds the same way
his Dad bobby bonds with the. Giants you, know.
Speaker 2 (27:17):
There's plenty of examples we could, go.
Speaker 3 (27:20):
You, know my, goodness it's a lot in your.
Speaker 2 (27:22):
Visio, yeah, yeah there's.
Speaker 3 (27:24):
Plenty Cam Lee Mineral Area College Junior. College is that a?
First it's not.
Speaker 2 (27:34):
A, first but, yes it's. Uh that is A missouri
uh to go Draft and For mineral it had been
a little. WHILE i believe In Kim. Lee another great
story out our Father Tulton catholic In. Columbia really good,
player had a good high school career and Was region
(27:56):
sixteen player of the. Year region sixteen is The missouri
your colleges and was player of the year and got
rewarded and in the ninth round getting selected and signed
with The.
Speaker 3 (28:08):
Orioles there you, go, MAN i remember watching him, play
saw him play a couple of different. TIMES a heck
of a good baseball player to The Baltimore. Orioles there you. Go,
uh they got a lot of young. Guys it'll be
interesting to see how that team continues to grow because
they were at that and then they've kind of interesting,
(28:31):
yeah Major League. Baseball then the local kid From Francis
hall right, Here jake McCutcheon at A Missouri state goes
in the tenth. ROUND i know we've had some discussions
and talks, about you, know off, camera just in different
with different, people where he fits at that next. Level,
(28:53):
kevin what do you think about this draft For.
Speaker 2 (28:56):
Jake i'm super excited For jake And jake's colln card
now is as. Bat you know in high school he
was a short. Stop now you know At Missouri state
in into pro, ball it will be viewed as more
of an offensive second. Basement so it's just another good
(29:17):
lesson for folks just they're you, know maybe navigating this
system with maybe a middle school or or maybe your
son's a high. Schooler it's could apply to softball. Too
don't be so set on a certain. Position the ability
to play multiple positions will only help you help your.
(29:40):
Cause and While jake McCutcheon was playing shortstop his senior,
Year TITUS csil or junior, Year Titus cissel was out
playing center field and then ultimately second, base uh you,
know And titus ended up GOING i believe was it
the third round or fourth round To, Arizona uh you,
know and a different, Program titus probably would have been
(30:02):
the shortstop all four, years but but he. Wasn't AND
i guarantee you that will Help titus throughout his pro,
career drawing on his early experiences having to play another
position because there was a kid that's older than him
that was just better at that, time at that. Moment
(30:22):
and Now jake is you, know moving around a little
bit and just athleticism and. Versatility. Uh it is is
a valuable commodity and young players should take note of,
that and, yes you want to be good at a primary.
Position you, you it's kind of. Necessary but the ability
(30:44):
to catch fly balls and play multiple spots on the
infield is a.
Speaker 3 (30:48):
Luxury you, know people wonder Why Francis halle is always
good every year you go Back Brett, Graves Nick, Perkins
nate or If Titus, Cistle jake. McCutcheon you have The
Brett norfleet, playing you, know starting tied end For missoo.
FOOTBALL i, mean.
Speaker 2 (31:13):
There's some kids there now THAT i think we'll be
talking about in the future, Too.
Speaker 3 (31:18):
And we'll get to that in another, segment. Folks, yeah, goodness, goodness.
Goodness another young another Picture Central. MISSOURI i love this. STUFF. Jd, McReynolds,
right and a pitcher kid out Of Sullivan High school
just down the road a piece And sullivan was in
(31:38):
the final four here With Gower Drake gower and you,
know so there you. Go love that.
Speaker 2 (31:48):
Stuff another mule off the. Board this is their second of. Three.
YEAH Jdm reynolds was a really good high school two
way player and you, know focused on pitching and was
a big piece of that back end of the bullpen
for The. Mules there you.
Speaker 3 (32:06):
GO i love That Texas rangers goes in the tenth.
Round And, kevin when you were talking, around just as
we get down, here tenth, round what does that? Mean
as far As i'm not talking, money you, know tenth.
Round there's so many rounds in, baseball you, know how
do people fit this in their brain in the sense
(32:29):
of like not like basketball or? Football?
Speaker 2 (32:31):
Right, yeah the baseball draft is a screwy. Draft now
there's twenty rounds and you, know you got to remember
it actually isn't that many rounds because they're filling out
a full farm system that used to be used to
be a lot more, rounds but fifty rounds and then
forty rounds and it's gotten down to twenty rounds. Now
(32:53):
and within the top ten, rounds teams are given amount
of money that they're allowed to sign their, players and
it fluctuates depending on how many picks they have where they're,
selecting and when the pool money is, up it's. Up
so there is some gamesmanship within the, draft and it
(33:13):
happened this year even or, supposedly if you, know they
don't necessarily come out and, say, well we took so
and so with the first pick or the second, pick
because we can save a little bit of money here
and there and then use it on a later round.
Pick you will see kids seniors drafted in the top
ten rounds sometimes because they can sign them for less
(33:37):
money and then give a high school kid Like Cam
ohman got way overslot for his, value which means they
saved some money on some picks somewhere where they were
able to, go you, know quadruple overslot For Cam. Lowman
so it is so it is an interesting, process and
(33:59):
it's not necessarily like THE nfl or THE nba where
you just automatically draft the best player. There it. Isn't
it's really. Interesting and we'll get to another guy later
that had a bigger number that was passed on because
(34:20):
he stuck those guns and then was drafted late and
they were hoping to have money left over to sign
him and they. Didn't so there's there's an interesting.
Speaker 3 (34:30):
System here's another young man and had a great. Conversation
if you get a chance go we're gonna probably repost
these because we did some player spotlights with kids that
have been, drafted AND i always enjoy this part of.
It but we got a chance to sit down With
Wyatt vincent before the season last. Year and here's one
(34:51):
of those, Kids. Kevin you just get that sense the
maturity level is. THERE i think this is great for Wyat,
vincent he's AT i was committed To Missouri. STATE i
believe he's signed with The.
Speaker 2 (35:03):
Mets didn't He he did sign, yes.
Speaker 3 (35:06):
So he's headed that. WAY i think he's got a
lot of upside.
Speaker 2 (35:12):
There very excited for why Ad, vincent speedy center fielder
with a good hit. Tool it's gonna be fun to
track his progress through The New York mets.
Speaker 3 (35:25):
System AND i thought we'd See Caden cloud in this
over why advance it no, offense you, know but different.
Speaker 2 (35:34):
Players that's one of the dynamics of the draft WHICH
i was talking. About you, know a kid will have
a certain number of value that he wants to hit
to be, drafted and then other players will, say, no,
Well i'll be willing to sign FOR, x and YOUR
x might be four times what mine, is and SO
(35:54):
i will get drafted and you won't Because i'm more,
signable and you might want to go to. School so
that that happens all the, time.
Speaker 3 (36:04):
And that's more the case of things why kids don't
get drafted here there than not.
Speaker 2 (36:09):
Correct, yeah it's called. Signability the scouts talking about it
a good. Amount so that's, where especially in rounds eleven through,
twenty signability becomes a big piece of the.
Speaker 3 (36:23):
Equation Dylan, tate right handed, pitcher junior At, oklahoma went
To Eureka High. School picked it around eleven by The.
Dodgers there you.
Speaker 2 (36:36):
Go Dylan, tate an electric arm missed his senior year
of high school With tommy john but up to about
ninety nine miles per hour At. Oklahoma only pitched twice this,
year had a nagging, injury pitched in the conference tournament
than the Regional and this is where being at a
(36:58):
bigger school, helped sure cause if you're a place like
An ou or one of these power, programs they're always
eyes on. You so you only have two, Appearances no big.
Deal it looked really. Good so he gets drafted. Inside
so congrats to To Dylan.
Speaker 3 (37:19):
TATE i can't help, it, man he sounds like A dodger. Already, Oh, Mercy,
well you know they're they're getting, healthy. Right Oh i'm. Terrible.
Uh Dylan Gray grego is that?
Speaker 2 (37:40):
It Dylan?
Speaker 3 (37:41):
Grego, yeah shortstop junior out of ball. State Stay High
school went to The San Diego padres another one middle
of the. State and these are schools that that are
parenially you, know making, Runs, Kevin, yes.
Speaker 2 (37:59):
Sure we're in a lot of liberties And staley's and
howls and learning why years after the fact that they
were winning all these. Games it's talented, players good, coaches
but talented players.
Speaker 3 (38:13):
Exactly and here's the other one. TOO i remember it
has been a few years. Ago the only one that's
left there is the Lefty Johnny. Carver but it's Why
raypeck was always right. There another, Pitcher Riley, huntsaker the
right handed, pitcher went To Lamar, university got drafted by The.
Cubs raypeck had that three headed monster for a couple
(38:34):
of years that, way didn't They yes they.
Speaker 2 (38:36):
Did, yes that was pretty.
Speaker 3 (38:39):
Good that was pretty. Good and Where's carver's committed To? Arkansas, Arkansas,
Okay so it'll be interesting to see what he's got
his senior year this. Year that'd be. Fun you, know
we've been talking, sometimes you'd, like, Man i've been talking
about this kid a long. Time well from a.
Speaker 2 (38:59):
Freshman, yeah that's.
Speaker 3 (39:01):
True he was pretty. Good so AND i Believe we
got a couple more. Here Denton, biller right handed, Pitcher
Johnson County Community. College love This Mid Buchanan class three,
school small school out of The Kansas city, area went
(39:21):
around Sixteen Baltimore. Orioles love that. Stuff he was a
four year, starter graduating in twenty three At Mid. Buchanan
biller's you, know hit four seventy, FIVE.
Speaker 2 (39:36):
A good TWO e guy in high, school but he
was always going to be a, pitcher, long, lean, heavy,
heavy fastball in high. School he started to approach ninety
ninety one as a, senior chose to he was getting
some four year, good four year interests and chose to
go To Johnson county and it clearly paid off for
him and.
Speaker 3 (39:59):
H his junior year he had a point seventy ninety
E ra with seventy three strikeouts in thirty five. Innings
lord At, mercy that's getting it done right, there. Folks Joe,
rizika right handed, Pitcher Belmont. University Webster groves right there
over there with Mister wiggins his stomping Grounds round sixteen
(40:23):
by The Detroit tigers And Kevin you know this kid pretty,
good don't?
Speaker 2 (40:26):
You? Yes AND i believe this one was before Coach,
wiggins But i'm sure he's rooting hard For joe and
great kid went To, belmont and you, know this is
another great. Story joe was very good in high, school
wasn't the best prospect on his. Team he had Tyson,
james who was much more highly regarded at the time Than.
(40:51):
Joe But joe was a high pitch ability upper eighties
arm in high school and goes down To, belmont has
a great, career turns into Their friday guy and Throwing
Friday fridays and ninety five miles per. Hour AND i
believe was THE ovc picture or maybe The Missouri Valley
(41:12):
pitcher of the. YEAR i would have to double check that.
One but had a great career At belmont and now
getting rewarded.
Speaker 3 (41:20):
There you go love. It the. Catcher we just saw
him in the state championships In class, one duking it
out as always with their perennial foe, Folks Ryland mills
the catcher out Of Oran High, school them And Saint
(41:42):
elizabeth duked it out for the last eight years here
in the. State, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (41:51):
Lan signed and this is an exciting. One he was
also a future. Gamer ryland broke Uh we talked about
this on the show multiple. Times in back In, February
ryland broke the all times exit velocity for our track
man That i've ever, done including the college. Kids so
(42:14):
it was he Topped caden boganpool WITH i think it
was one hundred and. Ten now that again you see
ON tv sometimes a guy might and rarely but occasionally
a guy will pop a one fifteen or a one
twenty once in a blue. Mood that's in. Game that's
easier to do those big numbers in. Game so it's
(42:34):
IN bp one ten that is. Ridiculous so really strong,
kid great kid rooting For. Ryland that one's going to
be really fun to.
Speaker 3 (42:44):
Follow another, One Ethan, rodgers left handed, pitcher dominated this
past season To Loan jack and was drafted in the
eighteenth round by The Detroit. Tigers BUT i think he's
chosen to go to.
Speaker 2 (43:00):
School, Correct he's going to, School and this is kind
of the dynamics of the. Draft i'm aware That ethan
was called multiple times earlier in the draft and held
firm to his number that he had positioned for, himself
and so the team didn't thought that may have been too,
(43:21):
much so they didn't you, know he fell and then
The tigers called and, said, hey we don't have the
money to sign you right, now but we're going to
draft you and if we don't sign one of our
higher draft, picks we'll have the money to sign. It
so they took a, flyer they tried it. Out ethan's
going to go To Wichita state and he'll be in
great shape there and he'll be back in the draft
(43:45):
in a couple of. Years.
Speaker 3 (43:46):
Absolutely, Absolutely Chase Heath, catcher senior out Of Central. Missouri
there it. Is you see him From Veritas Christian if,
folks if if anybody's familiar with, O'fala missouri Or Fort
Zumalt North High, school It's Kenny corner To Ford Zamalt
North High school, there just down the road From Carshield.
(44:08):
Field just down the road from that's Where Veritas Christian
High school is there In, O'falla. Missouri On Tom Genever,
SMALL i believe their class two. School Chase heath going
to The Saint Louis cardinals pick twentieth uh, IS i
would imagine he's.
Speaker 2 (44:28):
Going, yeah he was a, Senior so senior signed there
And catcher and they're always looking for catchers and cool.
Story and, yeah that's the third of The Central missouri.
Draftees AND i said the led the. State a couple
OTHERS i don't, know if you are finished, ahead list
(44:50):
a couple of players out OF missoi that were. Drafted
Jackson lovich was drafted in the sixteenth round by The
York yankees and signed utility, infielder had a and was
their top. Hitter and then this one's a name that
most folks will know in his multi sport, Athlete Sam,
(45:12):
Horn maszoo quarterback was drafted by YOUR La dodgers and
built back up as the year went, on but absolutely electric.
Stuff pitched in the conference tournament ninety seven miles per
hour with a big time. Slider so he signed with The.
(45:35):
Dodgers and if you recall A Jameis winston did this
a couple of years. Ago there there's a couple others
that have done this In, MISSOO i believe still has
not named their starting. Quarterback that he is in a
legitimate battle for the starting job there with The Penn state.
Transfer So Sam horn is still going to play, football
(45:58):
but he is going to start playing professional Next. February
uh and report to spring training. Camp, uh but then
still play. Football as my, UNDERSTANDING.
Speaker 3 (46:09):
I think that's an INTERESTING i kind of like, that
you know, that and and that The dodgers allowed him
to do.
Speaker 2 (46:14):
That right, WELL i firmly believe that if If Sam
horn stays, healthy he will be in the big leagues one.
Speaker 3 (46:23):
Day it would be my, guest, really he's that.
Speaker 2 (46:27):
Good, huh he's got big time. Stuff there you.
Speaker 3 (46:31):
Go and, well you know to your point right, There,
kevin who else do you? See you, know it's it's
all still back to that projectability thought process. Here, uh you,
know and that's what it. Is you can't there's no
there's nothing that there's no crystal ball for anybody or
anything like. That but of the folks you've seen drafted,
(46:53):
here you, know who do you think you? You you
would you think you might see in that big league?
Speaker 2 (46:59):
Sometime that's, RIGHT i don't, like But i'll stick With Sam.
HORN i will stick with With Sam.
Speaker 3 (47:09):
Horn nobody's gonna hold you to, it. Man.
Speaker 2 (47:14):
Uh, Well i'm rooting for all of, them. Clearly. Sure
and you know the thing about the high school, guys
it is so far down the. Road, yeah you, know
and that And that's why THE mlb draft isn't as
popular as THE nfl OR nba is because these these
players that are, drafted you you often don't hear from
(47:35):
them for minimally three years and often, yeah five. Six you,
know a guy like Cam owman taking an eighteen year old.
Kid you, know seven years from, now he's still, young
he's twenty. Five you, know plenty of guy's debut when
they're twenty four or twenty.
Speaker 3 (47:55):
Five so and he could still have a good ten year.
Speaker 2 (47:58):
Career. Absolutely, Yeah So i'll go this safe way And
i'll pick the older college. Guy, so but you, know
it is going to be a lot of fun to
follow these. Guys we have fun doing it in past
drafts and following guys through through their their journeys And Pro.
Speaker 3 (48:20):
BOWL i love, it you, know looking at that this
is the. Culmination but this really shows you AND i
want to go back to this point as we, finished
we'll finish up with. This but you know you said
this on multiple occasions with these. Kids, uh your, job
what you do with prep baseball is to give your
(48:43):
best evaluation of a player at the. Time that's, it
and projecting the thought process that you, know if he
continues on this, path this is what you, do but
nobody can predict what it can it. Does nobody. Can't
it's just you're doing your best to give somebody an
(49:05):
analysis based on the data and the information what you.
See and anybody doing this job knows. That and that's
why even at the highest, level they're doing the same
things you're doing with this.
Speaker 2 (49:16):
Draft, absolutely and you, know the most talented kids don't
always make the big. Leagues that there becomes a you,
know who can handle, adversity who's, competitive who's willing to
put in the extra. Work there's so many other dynamics
(49:37):
that go into being a professional. Player so it's not
just who can throw the, hardest who can you, know
hit or feel. That there's everyone's going to struggle at
a point in, time and how people react to that
and deal with that and gets who gets challenged and
how they respond to, that et. Cetera they're all major.
Speaker 3 (49:59):
Factors and that for him one last piece of advice
to all you kids out there working to get. There
quit worrying about if it Says division one behind, It go.
Play go to a school where you believe he's gonna
get an opportunity to play that you enjoy the coaches around.
You don't worry about the money right. Now if there's nil, money, fantastic, fantastic,
(50:25):
fantastic that's, great that's just. Icing but go to a
place where you're going to, play where you're going to
continue to grow as a baseball, player where they're going
to give you an opportunity to grow as a baseball.
Player that's the that's the key to, it because a
lot of these guys Is kevin just lined out to you. Here,
uh you, know right off the, top the kid was
(50:46):
ninetieth where he was at and that doesn't mean. Nothing
that's if you're ninety in a state that's however many
it's five hundred baseball and.
Speaker 2 (50:53):
Pitch high school team.
Speaker 3 (50:56):
Exactly so it's.
Speaker 2 (51:01):
Don't get, colds keep your head, down keep working, hard
and good things gonna happen for.
Speaker 3 (51:06):
You that's good advice right.
Speaker 2 (51:09):
There.
