Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome to the very first episode of your Never pot Alone.
(00:41):
Before we get stuck into Liverpool's ninety two ninety three season,
I want to tell you a little bit about why
we're here doing this show. I mean, I grew up
down South, far away from Elmfield. Most kids around me
were either Spurs United or Southampton, but for me it
was always Liverpool and the reason was my ankle. He
(01:04):
was a massive Red and through him I caught the bug.
He'd tell me stories about the great Liverpool sides of
the seventies and eighties, about kennyed Algbeach, Kevin keegan, Ian Rush,
European Nights and title after title. By the time ninety
two rolled around, football was starting to grab my attention properly.
(01:27):
And what a year to begin paying attention. It was
the start of the Premier League. Everything felt new, shiny
and different, Sky Sports, Monday Night Football or the Razmataz
and for me it was just the beginning of my
journey with Liverpool. This podcast is about retracing that journey,
season by season, the highs, the lows, the players we loved,
(01:49):
the games will never forget, and the heartbreaks we'd rather forget,
and all starts here in ninety two ninety three Liverpool's
very first Premier League campaign. Okay, so we're going to
set the scene back in the summer of nineteen ninety two,
English football changed forever. The old First Division was gone,
(02:10):
replaced by the shiny new FA Premier League. Sky Sports
promised Razmataz, Monday Night Football, cheerleaders, fireworks and water wall coverage.
Money was pouring in and football was about to become
a big business away from the pitch. UK charts were
full of the shamans, ebonize are good good, E's a good,
(02:31):
cheeky nods to a rave culture. And at the cinema
you had Wayne's World and Reservoir Dogs and on TV
Guladiators was smashing Saturday nights on ITV. Liverpool, though, were
in transition, gone with the days of dominating the eighties.
The team still had giants like Ian Rush, John Barnes
and Bruce Grobola, but the balance wasn't quite right at
(02:54):
the Helm Graham sooness a Liverpool legend as a player,
but as a manager things were far rockier. Now we're
going to go to the season overview soon, as had
taken over in ninety one, promised to rebuild Liverpool with younger,
fitter players, and came Paul Stewart from Spurs, Torben Petnick
(03:18):
from Denmark, the central defender called Mark Wright the year before.
On paper it was a mix of youth and experience,
but expectations were still high. After all, this was Liverpool,
a club that only a few years ago had swept
up league titles like they were going out of fashion.
The fans wanted a title challenge. In reality, well that
(03:40):
was something something else. So the transfers in for this
this season. David James came in from Watford for one
million pounds. Paul Stewart came in from Spurs for two
point three million pounds. Torton Petnick came from sc Copenhagen
for five hundred k. Stinking and beyorder Be came from
(04:02):
Rosenberg for six hundred k. Outwent ray Houghton to Astonville
by eight hundred and twenty five K. Barry Venison Newcastle
United for two hundred and fifty K. Dean Saunders was
sold to aston Villa in September the two point three
(04:23):
million pounds. So let's go through this season month by month,
because the story of ninety two ninety three really is
one of ups, downs and frustrations. In August nineteen ninety two,
the very first Premier League season kicked off, but not
with a bang for Liverpool. We opened a way at
(04:44):
Nottingham Forest and lost one nil thanks to Teddy Sheringham
goal alive on sky Welcome to the Premier League. Reds.
We bounced back with a two to one home win
against Sheffield United, against the goals from Porlstraw and Ronnie Rosenthal,
but at the end of August Liverpool sat mid table.
September ninety two there was no kinder. A bruising four
(05:07):
to two defeat away to ask the Villa showed just
how shaky we were defensively. We did manage a two
to one win win against Chelsea, a reminder we still
have lots in the locker, but inconsistency was a theme.
By the end of September. We were sat around tenth place.
October ninety two. It gave us some relief for one
(05:30):
home victory to Norwich with Steve mcmahman started to show
his flair, but then came the lows humiliating two defeat
away to Spares. Confidence was dropping and the league table
showed it Liverpool were hobbing outside the top ten, something
top heights weren't used to. November ninety two, Oh it
was grim I won no defeat at Queen's Park. Rangers
(05:53):
highlighted the gulf between Liverpool and some of the teams
that were on the up. There were also There was
also a two one lost to Everton at Goodison, a
painful reminder that our old players can haunt us. Peter
Beardsley Liverpool sliding down the table, flirting with the bottom half.
Christmas period in December ninety two offered some light. We
(06:16):
beat Blackburn two to one at home, with Mark Waters
scoring the winner, but the joy didn't last. A crushing
five one defeet to Coventry and the drawer against Man
City left the night at the halfway stage of the season.
Too many drop points, too many stopping performances. January ninety three,
the new year didn't bring much change. We lost two
(06:37):
to one at home to We lost two one at
Father Park in the FA Cup. We were beaten by
Bolton in a replay. Then we beat Arsenal one now
at Highbury, repetially by John Barnes. Performances were still unconvincing,
from the league table, Liverpool stuck around eighth and ninth.
(06:58):
February ninety three was the one we didn't win a
game in February. Defeat to Southampton two to one and
drab draws with Forest Itswich and Sheffild Wednesday kept us
anchored firmly mid table, the title long gone, even a
top four spot looked unlikely. March ninety three it starts
off with a two to one loss at home to
(07:19):
Man United, but then came wins against QPR Middlesbrough and
a late late goal by Ronnie Rosenthal against Everton at Anfield.
By the end of March, Liverpool at ninth for the table,
closer to the bottom than the top. In April ninety
three we started badly with a four one defeat away
(07:40):
at Blackburn with Sheer running riot and against our old
manager Kenny dal Gleash, but wins against Oldham Leeds and
a four niil thrashing of Conventry at home a little
paidback from the five five to one defeat away from
home to Hyfield Road Buns and Rush running the show
with McManamon in full flight. It was glimpse of the
(08:00):
old Liverpool season limped to a close in made ninety three,
a dull defeat against Norridge shunned it up, then a
disappointing three to two defeat to hold them or we
did finish it off at anfill with entertaining six to
two win against Tottenham Hotspur, John Barnes bragging a brace.
Liverpool eventually finished sixth in the Premier League on sixty points,
(08:24):
twenty five points behind Manchester United. For a club built
on winning, it was nowhere near good enough. My player
focus of ninety two two players that stood out for
me back when we look in ninety two ninety three.
First was Ian Rush, the master marksman. We're still leading
(08:46):
the line, still scoring goals, but more carrying more of
a burden as the squad around him struggled. Russian's Russi's
class never faded, but even he could drag Liverpool into
a tidal race. Then at the other age of the
age girl, we had Steve mcmannmon, who was basically coming
through and showing his blistering pace, some great finishing. He
(09:09):
was improving. His better seasons was still to come, but
mcmamon was one to watch. And then again Robbie Fowler.
He didn't get he didn't get a season at all,
but you know there was some excitement bubbling on the
cop there was an ad from top tive he was
the future and he was to show it in the
next season. Off the pitch wasn't much mover. Graham soon
(09:31):
as famously out coursed outrage by giving an interview to
the Son on the anniversary of Hillsborough. That decision damaged
his relationship with local fans beyond repair. For many, it
was unforgivable. The atmosphere at Anfield was tense. Yes, there
was still chances, still banners, still passion, but the patience
was wearing thinn. Liverpool were a giant that suddenly looked
(09:54):
uncertain of its new place in the Premier League world.
So how did it all end? Liverpool finished sixth in
the league, respectfully respectable but way off the title pace.
In the cups, we went out in the FA Cup
third round replay to Bolton We least in the European
Cup and this Cup in the second round to Spartak
(10:16):
Moscow and obviously Crystal Palace beat It's in the fourth
round of the League Cup in a replay an extra
time for a club built on success that felt like failure.
The warning signs were there. United Rising Arsenal had their still,
but they weren't anywhere where they should be. A Liverpool
looked like a club stuck between past glory and future
(10:38):
promise in eroinsight. Nineteen ninety two ninety three was the
season where Liverpool realized the Premier League was going to
be very different. The glory days of the seventies and
eighties were gone. The squad needed rebuilding, the club needed direction.
But even in the gloom there were positives. Steve McManaman
(11:01):
Jamie Redne were breaking through the sheet season. The next
generation were being sown. It wasn't pretty. It was the
start of the journey. A journey has to start somewhere.
So let's finish with some quick stats to lock this
season in the memory. Final league position was sixty one
(11:23):
sixty points. Top goal scorer was Ian Rush fourteen league
goals twenty two in all competitions. Our biggest win Liverpool six,
top them two in May nineteen ninety three. Heaviest defeat
Coventry five Liverpool one in December of ninety two the
FA Cup. That was that third round replay defeat at
(11:43):
home to Bolton John mcguinney League Cup fourth round exit
to Crystal Palace, European Cup Winners Cup, second round exit
to Spartak Moscow. Average attended a van An film was
around thirty four thousand. Of the year, in my opinion,
was a classic green and white added US Awake kit
(12:06):
that one still divides fans even now. And that's it
for episode one of You'll Never Pot Alone, the nineteen
ninety two ninety three season, Liple's first in the Premier League.
First struggles flashes are brilliance and the first signs of
a new era. Next week wedlve into ninety two ninety
three ninety four Graham soon as his last stand, the
(12:28):
rise of Fowler and ry Evans waiting in the wings.
Until then, Thanks for listening, and remember You're Never hod Alone.
(13:03):
The Dream where an
