The holiday season often carries a tension between joy and heaviness. While we celebrate the birth of Christ with wonder, expectations, busyness, grief, and change can steal our peace. In John 14:27, Jesus reminds His disciples that true peace doesn’t come from a perfectly executed holiday or a trouble-free life—it comes from Him alone. When our hearts feel overwhelmed by demands or sadness, we are invited to return to the Prince of Peace and receive the rich, lasting calm only He can give. This season, peace becomes possible not by doing more, but by turning our focus back to Jesus, who is always with us.

Your Daily Prayer

Lord Jesus, You are the Prince of Peace, and I long to experience Your presence in a deeper way this season. When the holidays feel heavy, rushed, or overwhelming, quiet my spirit and calm my fears. Remind me that true peace does not come from accomplishing more, but from resting in You. Help me release the expectations I carry and receive the peace You freely give. Let Your presence steady my heart and fill my days with renewed joy as I celebrate Your birth.
Amen.

Speaker 1 (00:02):
Life Audio. Thank you for listening to your Daily Prayer,
a podcast dedicated to helping you find the words you
need to connect with your Father in Heaven. No matter
what is going on in your life today, you can

(00:24):
trust that God wants to hear from you. Right after
this short word from our sponsor, people pray through today's
prayer for peace when Holidays feel heavy Together. A Prayer

(00:53):
for Peace when Holidays Feel Heavy written and read by
Kerrie Eichberger. Peace. I leave with you my peace I
give you. I do not give to us the world gives.
Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not
be afraid. John fourteen, verse twenty seven. There's always a

(01:16):
heartwarming anticipation I feel as the final few months of
each year approach. But that sense is sadly and suddenly
met with a hard and heavy hit. Though there is
much joy, the holiday's season brings on so much else
that steals my peace. Strong suggestions and loaded expectations, to

(01:38):
shot myself silly, to serve and give bigger and bolder,
to decorate sooner and more extravagantly, to follow every long
lasting tradition and then some, all while keeping the joy,
the peace, and most definitely Jesus at the center of
it all. It's a lot not to mention the pain

(01:58):
of what's changed should been lost, like the people no
longer present that once made this special time of year
even more special. I want to embrace every bit of
what the season brings, but I have a hard time
soaking in its peace and joy with all the demands, expectations,
and even hurt that sometimes encircle the season. Do you

(02:22):
sense any heaviness of the holiday season, feeling like there
are countless tasks he should or want to tackle? Like
you want it to sparkle with the joy and magic
it should as you celebrate the birth of the Savior,
But the hope of keeping the pace and peace sometimes
seems impossible. I get this, but we still long for

(02:44):
peace to fill the season. We know without it there
wouldn't be much joy, and there should be great joy.
We are celebrating the most joy filled news the rule
has ever known. The Son of God was sent down
to save us and stay with us forever. I think
we all agree that not only is this the most

(03:05):
joyous of occasions, but we also deeply desire to make
it just that. And if we can keep the peace.
Amid the hustle and heaviness, we could better keep our
eyes on him and sustain and swell some more wonder, awe,
and joy. Whether it's the burden of the bustling season

(03:25):
or the sadness of sorrow it brings. Heaviness and hurry
can steal our peace at any given time. But it's
those times we must remember who our peace actually is
and where it comes from. It's Jesus. It is Jesus
who said to his disciples before his death, peace, I

(03:46):
leave you my peace. I give you I do not
give to you as the world gives. Do not let
your hearts be troubled, and do not be afraid. This
offer of peace was also for you and me, And
still today he left us his peace. He gave us
his peace, and it is not as the world gives it. No,

(04:09):
it's better. It's rich and real and lasting, and in
him is where we can still find it. Despite the
demands and draws of the world, despite the expectations of
this season to do this and that and more and more,
don't forget to pause and soak in his peace. Don't

(04:31):
forget what matters most, allowing your heart to celebrate him
for him and with him. Our peace is in Jesus,
and Jesus is always with us. The holidays can be heavy,
but we don't need to let our hearts be troubled
or to be afraid of what may come of this

(04:51):
time or any because Jesus is always available to us
and always with us. Thus his peace is always with us.
We just need to place our focus more on him
in order to receive it. Instead of fixating on completing
our Christmas shopping, making more perfect memories, pursuing every past tradition,

(05:13):
or on our disappointment of what isn't as we wish
it were, we should focus our hearts each day on
communing with and celebrating Jesus. So as you consider the
holiday plans, before you plan for more peace, take something
unnecessary off your list, place more margin in your calendar,

(05:34):
and prioritize extra time in God's presence each morning. Release
all the expectations of people, receive and lean into the
calls to simply sit still with your savior, your friend,
the Lord of peace himself, Jesus, and then linger with
him as he lifts and enlightens the heaviness of the

(05:57):
holidays and replaces it is precious and permeating peace. Let's pray,
Lord Jesus, you are the Prince of peace, and I
long to refresh my awe of your birth in this season.
If I'm being honest, there is some happiness that hovers

(06:17):
over the holidays. I feel the way when I can't
mean expectations, when I struggle with what I wish were different,
and when the world tells me to do more and
move faster, but the world does not provide the peace
my soul longs for. Only you can do that. Lord,
help my heart know not to be troubled or afraid. Rather,

(06:41):
may I receive you and let your peaceful presence reign
and rule my entire soul. I praise you and celebrate
you in this blessed season in your glorious name. Amen.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
