Speaker 4 (01:05):
It had been some time since we'd had any real trouble,
anything more than throwing a few juiced up cowboys and
jail to sober.

Speaker 5 (01:12):
Up for a few hours. And I liked it peaceful
for a change, and I hope to the stay that way.

Speaker 4 (01:20):
Hell, that morning, i'd gone to take a few catfish

Heavens no, New York, Marshall.

Speaker 7 (02:14):

himself all morning.

Speaker 2 (02:59):

Speaker 5 (03:02):
You know, something about the stage shadow.

Speaker 1 (03:05):
Only that it's caring fifty thousand in gold out of
lead though, so well, maybe that's why it's late.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
What do you mean, man, Well, if.

Speaker 4 (03:14):
Somebody wanted that goal, that'd have to stop the stage
long enough to get it unloaded, wouldn't they?

Speaker 2 (03:20):
And its he means branding.

Speaker 4 (03:22):
Now hold it, mister Carter. You're already bleeding and nobody's
shot you nothing, nothing other Just take it easy.

Speaker 5 (03:28):
The stage'll get here, all right. It's awful a little bit.

Speaker 7 (03:31):
Just fan says it might have been held up.

Speaker 2 (03:33):
Why there may have been a shooting one?

Speaker 5 (03:34):
I know he's just day tread.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
It's wait, wait a minute, listen.

Speaker 5 (03:38):
Huh well there it is now seen me hard.

Speaker 7 (03:42):
There was nothing to worry about.

Speaker 4 (03:44):
It got here all.

Speaker 6 (03:55):
What is it?

Speaker 5 (03:55):
Jim got held up?

Speaker 7 (03:57):
Marshall's one lost fifty thousand?

Speaker 5 (03:59):
Goold? Where'd this happened?

Speaker 2 (04:00):
About twenty mile back?

Speaker 5 (04:02):
There would draw?

Speaker 4 (04:03):
But anybody shot not the shot fired.

Speaker 5 (04:05):
He took it.

Speaker 7 (04:06):
But where's Jane hurt?

Speaker 2 (04:10):
Where's the girl who was on the stage. What's happened
to her? That?

Speaker 5 (04:12):
Soort Of started to.

Speaker 7 (04:13):
Tell you, Marshallow, there's a tree across the road. We
got down to move it.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
This rider got to.

Speaker 7 (04:17):
Drop off us.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
He's all alone. Never mind all that.

Speaker 5 (04:20):
Where's the girl? He took the gold?

Speaker 7 (04:22):
Took the girl too?

Speaker 2 (04:23):
What he took Jane?

Speaker 7 (04:26):
Even to tell me? You look him?

Speaker 5 (04:27):
Take Jane?

Speaker 7 (04:27):
Well, now, mister, there weren't much choice. He held a
shotgun on us, and they're gone.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
Or we could do a thing.

Speaker 5 (04:34):
This is impossible, and take it easy, mister Carter. We'll
find them.

Speaker 7 (04:37):
You'll find it. You were off fishing when it happened.
What kind of blow is there on here?

Speaker 5 (04:41):
Anyway? Easy, mister Carter.

Speaker 7 (04:42):
I took one of the team after Marshall's, but it
couldn't get near him.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
He had an extra saddle horse with him.

Speaker 7 (04:47):
Put her on there, and I see, but I don't
think he planned on kidnapping that girl.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
Where it was. He just looked at her and told.

Speaker 4 (04:54):
Her to come along.

Speaker 5 (04:55):
Did you recognize him, Jim.

Speaker 7 (04:56):
No, Those horses are both sorrows by heaven. Marshall, you
better get her back here at once, or I'll pick
this up with Washington.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
I'll see you, disgrace.

Speaker 5 (05:03):
Sight, Carter.

Speaker 4 (05:05):
She tes to go get our horses and a couple
of rifles. I've got a few more details from Jim here.

Speaker 5 (05:09):
Well, don't you want a poffiness. No, there'd be too
much shooting around that girl. Now, hurry, will you? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (05:13):
For our hurry mitsil not my words.

Speaker 7 (05:16):
We'd better have Jane back here by night.

Speaker 5 (05:18):
Paul Marshall, we care to ride along, mister Carter?

Speaker 4 (05:21):
No, No, I'm not equipped for that sort of thing.

Speaker 7 (05:26):
I'll take care of matters at this end.

Speaker 5 (05:28):
Yeah, all right now, Jim, I'll tell me first exactly
what happens.

Speaker 4 (05:32):
Well, we just come down into the drawer about one
hundred yards from the creek. The blood red sun was
drooping over the edge of the prairie when Chester and
I reached.

Speaker 5 (05:49):
Cottonwood draw We rode hard until night fell, and then
we had to stop and wait for daylight. But with
morning we drew a heavy rain, washed out every trek
we rode on.

Speaker 4 (06:02):
Anyway, for the next three days we scouted a big
piece of that country.

Speaker 5 (06:09):
Well, it was hopeless. Finally we headed back to Dodge
empty handed. Bartender, bring me a bottle with your macy.

Speaker 7 (06:28):
Marshall, it's you, all right, Carter.

Speaker 5 (06:31):
I'm sorry what.

Speaker 7 (06:35):
You mean you didn't find them?

Speaker 4 (06:38):
Rain washed out their trail. First morning we never picked
it up again. They could be anywhere.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
You came back without her.

Speaker 5 (06:47):
We did what we could, Carter, I will just have
to wait for word of some kind. You'll be seen
sooner or later.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
Wait, well, I won't wait.

Speaker 7 (06:56):
This will cost you your job, Marshall. I promise you that.

Speaker 4 (06:58):
Look, Carter, if it make you feel better, why don't
you write out yourself?

Speaker 7 (07:02):
It isn't my drop to people all around here, Marshall, it's.

Speaker 5 (07:04):
Yours, Yeah, say Marshall, Hell yeah, what is the shadow?

Speaker 4 (07:12):
Big Kate wanted to see you when you got back,
asked me to tell you Big Kate. Alright, thank you,

(07:33):
co man. Oh no, lock a, Matt, how'd you know, Kate?

Speaker 2 (07:43):
I can tell the looking at you.

Speaker 4 (07:45):
It's thousands and thousands of miles at prairie than just
luck if we'd found him.

Speaker 7 (07:52):
Nobody's blaming you, Matt.

Speaker 5 (07:53):
No, Carter is, and I suppose it's hard on him.
He's feel say and all that Carter's no good.

Speaker 4 (08:03):
Matt.

Speaker 5 (08:03):
Well, I never liked him. I suppose that doesn't matter.

Speaker 6 (08:06):
And I'll tell you why he's no good.

Speaker 8 (08:10):
You know something, k m Cart has been drunk a
lot while you were out. He was bragging one of
the girls last night about what not much to my
way of thinking.

Speaker 5 (08:23):
We'll go on.

Speaker 4 (08:24):
Well, to make.

Speaker 8 (08:25):
It short, seems Jane's father got into a big deal
with Carter up in Denver. Yeah, Carter got him tied
up good and then.

Speaker 2 (08:33):
Threatened to ruin him.

Speaker 5 (08:35):
Oh well, so what happened.

Speaker 7 (08:36):
He didn't ruin him.

Speaker 6 (08:38):
He took Jane instead.

Speaker 4 (08:41):
Oh well, maybe she likes him.

Speaker 8 (08:47):
You don't know much about women, do you met you
think a Boughton bride is likely to be in love
with the man.

Speaker 5 (08:54):
So that's what I have to bring her back to.

Speaker 6 (08:57):
Well, what are you gonna do about it?

Speaker 5 (09:00):
Hm? I can I do? Kay? You just have to
wait and see what turns up. I waited. I waited
a week.

Speaker 4 (09:15):
Carter was drunk the whole time, telling everybody how he
was gonna fix me good. I'm not doing much about
it except to stay out of my way. And things
were fairly quiet Chester and I spent most of our
time in the office. Well, he sure fooled me, mister
Dylon H. Carter, Yes, sir, he seemed like such a

(09:36):
nice fella. I am so rich.

Speaker 5 (09:39):
He's rich alright, but poor in spirit.

Speaker 4 (09:44):
He's been going to church again Chester, Yes, mister Dylon,
last Sunday.

Speaker 5 (09:48):
Oh, last Sunday, I didn't it? Uh rain listen, No,
I like.

Speaker 4 (09:54):
Church, mister Dylon, but I sure do hate to get
all dressed.

Speaker 5 (10:03):
You the Marshal, Yeah, I am.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
He's been looking for a man and a woman.

Speaker 5 (10:08):
Huh you know anything, mister.

Speaker 2 (10:11):
My name's Chad Brown. Just rode in from Satana.

Speaker 5 (10:15):
Yeah, there was.

Speaker 7 (10:17):
A man and a woman about eighty miles back on the trail.

Speaker 4 (10:20):
What color horses were they on? Well, soon as they
saw me the road all so.

Speaker 5 (10:24):
I didn't get very close, but both horses were the
same color.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
I guess maybe.

Speaker 5 (10:30):
So man, are you willing to ride back with me?
Mister Brown?

Speaker 2 (10:34):
I don't know, Marshall. I've got an awful.

Speaker 5 (10:38):
Third woman's out there against her will.

Speaker 2 (10:42):
I'll go.

Speaker 5 (10:43):
I'll get our horse do uh no.

Speaker 4 (10:44):
No, Malchester, Uh be better if you wait here this time.
We'll be back in a few days with luck that's
called mister Brown.

Speaker 1 (11:11):
We will return for the second act of gun Smoke
in just a moment. But first, Frank Fontaine now brings
you comedy with four members of the Frank Fontaine family,

Speaker 7 (11:26):

Speaker 1 (11:29):
It's refreshing summer listening, So just for fun, try the
Frank Fontaine Show Tomorrow night on CBS Radio. Now the
second act of gun Smoke.

Speaker 4 (11:56):
Chad Brown and I covered the eighty miles on the
day and a half. The Outlaws trail headed south for
a few miles and then turned northeast, back in the
general direction of Dodge.

Speaker 5 (12:10):
It was hot and still on the horizon.

Speaker 4 (12:13):
There were occasional flashes of heat like them, and then
in the distance we saw the long, low cloud of
yellow dust that spelled cattle. The Texas herd trailing north.
The Kidnappers tracks led straight into it. An hour later
we pulled up not far from the swing, and they
heard the line, a long horn stretch for several miles

(12:35):
across our trail. We watched him looking for a lag
to ride through. All of a sudden, the rider came
hallow and down on us.

Speaker 5 (12:54):
You ain't damning across that herd? Are you?

Speaker 4 (12:56):
Have you seen anything of a man and a woman
around here, mister mounted, Yeah, A couple of sorrows don't matter.

Speaker 9 (13:03):
I ain't seen nothing but cattle and cowboys for six weeks. Besides,
these cattle are plenty uneasy. They've been dry since yesterday morning.
That heat lightning ain't soothing to him.

Speaker 4 (13:13):
This hurts cross the trail of an outlaw and a
kidnapped woman.

Speaker 5 (13:16):
Mister, that's so well, I just have to wait.

Speaker 9 (13:19):
You can ride around a drag back there, but you
can't cut through this hurt mister.

Speaker 4 (13:23):
Look, I'm a US marshal out of Dodge, and I
haven't got any time to waste.

Speaker 9 (13:27):
You think, well, I sure appreciate your problem, Marshall, but
I can't help you. I'm trail boss of this outfit,
and I got three thousand head of cattle here, worth
maybe twenty.

Speaker 5 (13:35):
Dollars ahead of Dodge.

Speaker 9 (13:37):
They're too nervy now, and I sure can't chance you're
touching him off by riding through there.

Speaker 7 (13:41):
I guess he's right, Marshall, should be pretty risky from
the look i'm they're moving too fast now.

Speaker 5 (13:48):
Yeah, I know, just that. I hate to lose the time.
You got more time than I got cattle. Marshalls. Well,
I don't know.

Speaker 4 (13:55):
About that, but I won't tempt the stampede.

Speaker 5 (13:57):
Mister will ride around the tray.

Speaker 4 (14:00):
Let's see in Dodge, the alefrigansa still running. Yeah, it
is mostly on Texas money. We rode down along the
herd and back off the other side about a four
mile detail, but we picked up the trail again and

(14:23):
followed until dark. Next morning we found the outlaws still
headed straight for.

Speaker 5 (14:28):
Dodge, and all we could.

Speaker 4 (14:29):
Figure was that he must be new to the country
and just plain lost. Naturally, he'd want to avoid asking
questions of anybody. By noon we were in sight of town,
and during the last hour either Brown or Eyes said
a word. Finally we rode up Front Street and got
down at the jail.

Speaker 7 (15:06):
Mister Dillon.

Speaker 4 (15:08):
We got him, mister Dillon. They rode right in here
early this morning.

Speaker 5 (15:11):
Gave himself up. Uh, yes, sir, I got.

Speaker 4 (15:14):
The man locked up in back and the money is
over at the bank.

Speaker 5 (15:16):
Oh good.

Speaker 4 (15:17):
How's the girl Chester? Oh she's fine, a little tired,
but fine. Well what's his story?

Speaker 5 (15:23):
Who is he?

Speaker 4 (15:24):
He calls himself Scott Cooley, but he won't say anything more. Tall,
mister Dillon, I just gave up on him. I thought
I'd better wait for you.

Speaker 5 (15:32):
All right, I'll talk to him first, and then I
want to see the girl. Where is she?

Speaker 4 (15:36):
I didn't like it, mister Dillon, but I didn't see
what I could rightly.

Speaker 2 (15:39):
Do about it.

Speaker 5 (15:40):
What do you mean what happened?

Speaker 4 (15:41):
Well, she sure didn't want to go with him, but
that mister Carter came here and just the same as
dragged her off. She went finally, but I sure don't
like it.

Speaker 5 (15:50):
Well, they didn't leave Dodge, did they.

Speaker 10 (15:52):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (15:52):
No, sir, there's no train till tomorrow.

Speaker 5 (15:54):
Theyre at the hotel. H all right, I'll go over
there later. Chester. Eh. So you're a Scott Cooley. Huh?
New around here, aren't you? Oh? Anyways, I never saw
you before, Marshall, and I've tried hard enough to meet
up with you. Cooley. You're in trouble, you know, bad trouble. Marshall.

(16:17):
You've got anything to say, just say it right out.

Speaker 4 (16:21):
I got nothing to say. I'm just curious why you
rode in the dodge.

Speaker 5 (16:26):
That's what do you care. I'm here, you got the
money back and and what all? Leave me alone, Marshall,
Just let me alone. You gotta talk sometimes. I listen, Marshall.
I'm ready to serve my time that's why I gave
myself up. But talk. No, I don't have to talk,

(16:48):
not for you, not for anybody else. Mm all right Cooley,
haven't your way? Marshall? Yeah, Marshall. You you're going to
see Jane? Yeah? Why? Oh? What are you gonna see

(17:14):
her about? To find out what happened? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (17:20):
Marshall, I don't suppose you'd let me out of here
just long enough to kill Carter?

Speaker 5 (17:24):
Now? You mean the girl told you?

Speaker 4 (17:26):
But I wouldn't care if I hang for it'd be
worth it to kill him.

Speaker 5 (17:32):
Tell me something? What makes you think what you did
is any better?

Speaker 6 (17:37):
Why?

Speaker 5 (17:41):
You wouldn't understand?

Speaker 4 (17:42):
Marshall?

Speaker 5 (17:45):
But you you do what you can for her?

Speaker 2 (17:49):
Will you.

Speaker 5 (17:51):
Anything else you wanna tell me? No? That's all? Who

(18:15):
is it? Matt Dllon?

Speaker 2 (18:18):
What do you want?

Speaker 5 (18:19):
Open the door? Carter? I want to talk to the girl.

Speaker 2 (18:21):
Come on a time, mark?

Speaker 5 (18:22):
You want me to kick the door open? You're asking
for trouble, Carter? Eh? How do you do? Miss? I'm
Marshall Dylan.

Speaker 6 (18:40):
How do you do? Marshall?

Speaker 4 (18:41):
I uh, I know you've been through a lot, miss,
but I have to get the whole story from you
so as I can file the proper charges against this
outlaw Scott Cooling.

Speaker 6 (18:49):
You want to use me to put him in prison?

Speaker 4 (18:52):
That is well, he's committed two crimes, robbery and kidnap him.

Speaker 5 (18:57):
We'll want him up for both.

Speaker 6 (18:59):
What doesn't the fact he gave himself up and return
the money help at all?

Speaker 5 (19:04):
I'm afraid I don't gather your drift.

Speaker 2 (19:06):
And let it go at that, Marshall.

Speaker 4 (19:08):
We're leaving Dodge on the next train, so Jane won't
be here to testify anyway.

Speaker 5 (19:13):
Now, is that what you have in mind? Jane?

Speaker 10 (19:16):
No?

Speaker 6 (19:18):
I mean I don't know.

Speaker 4 (19:21):
Please upset enough Marshall alone, I want anything out of you, Cutter,
I'll knock it out and a shut up.

Speaker 2 (19:26):
You can't talk to me like that.

Speaker 10 (19:28):
Wait, Marshall, I'll tell you.

Speaker 6 (19:31):
All about it.

Speaker 10 (19:31):
But first, yeah, I'm not in front of him, Make
him go out, and then i'll tell you.

Speaker 4 (19:39):
All right, Cutter, I'll say, if you order me around,
this is my room. I opened the door and find Garan.
I'll try you all the way downstairs.

Speaker 5 (19:58):
All right now, Jane, you can talk.

Speaker 6 (20:01):
Can I trust you, Marshall? Really trust you?

Speaker 4 (20:06):
Well, that's up to you. But I'll tell you this.
I know about Carter about you and Carter?

Speaker 5 (20:14):
That is?

Speaker 6 (20:14):
Then you you know how I hate him?

Speaker 5 (20:18):
Yeah? Right now, I'm curious about this kidnapping. What happened?
Why did Cooley give himself up?

Speaker 10 (20:26):
Because we decided we we couldn't live being hunted down
the rest of our lives.

Speaker 5 (20:31):
Uh so you were in on it with him?

Speaker 2 (20:34):
Uh?

Speaker 6 (20:34):
No, Marshall. The first time I ever saw Scott Cooley
was when he held up the stage.

Speaker 5 (20:41):
I'd like to believe that.

Speaker 6 (20:42):
Oh, very simple, Marshall. I love Scott Cooley? What I
love him? Oh?

Speaker 4 (20:49):
Now, look, Jane, girls like you just don't go around
falling in love without laws.

Speaker 5 (20:53):
Don't they Marshall, No, they don't.

Speaker 6 (20:57):
I did.

Speaker 4 (20:58):
Then either you're crazy or yell. I mean, if you
weren't a woman, i'd throw you in jail right along
with him.

Speaker 6 (21:03):
I'm a woman, Marshall, But I have no objection to
going to jail with Scott.

Speaker 5 (21:06):
Then he admits her his accomplished No.

Speaker 6 (21:09):
I suppose it's hard for you'd understand, Marshall.

Speaker 5 (21:14):
It is.

Speaker 10 (21:15):
Well, I'll try to make it simple. See, Scott doesn't
know why he took me with him when he held
up the stage. He's never done anything like that before.
It just seemed perfectly natural to him. He saw something
he wanted and he took it.

Speaker 6 (21:30):
That's all.

Speaker 5 (21:32):
I'm afraid the court will look at it somewhat differently.

Speaker 10 (21:36):
I suppose you'll go to prison for the hold up,
but not for kidnapping. Why not, because I'll testify that
I went with him of my own free will.

Speaker 4 (21:46):
I almost wish you too, hadn't ridden back to Dodge.

Speaker 6 (21:51):
Marshall.

Speaker 10 (21:51):
Yeah, you said you know about Bob Carter and me. Yeah, well,
Scott's been wild and and he's done wrong, but but
he's never done anything really evil.

Speaker 5 (22:07):
Well maybe you're better off with Koli if he straightens out.

Speaker 6 (22:13):
