Speaker 1 (00:01):
From Hollywood.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
It's time now for Johnny Dollar boyd genius.

Speaker 3 (00:06):
Oh look, Johnny, don't blame yourself.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
We come here to Lagos Island to pick up Tom Chase.
So what happens. He circles around behind us, grabs a
boat and takes off.

Speaker 3 (00:15):
How could you help it?

Speaker 2 (00:16):
I should have figured what he was up to. He
was all alone here on the island, no way to
get off, so we obligingly show up in a boat.
He pins us down on the underbrush with a few
wild shots while he works his way around to the boat. Well,
one thing I got to admit, Lola, your husband's no dummy.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
Please.

Speaker 4 (00:30):
I just soon not be reminded of Tom's cleverness. Embezzlement, murder, escape.
If that's cleverness, I don't want any part of it.
If you don't turn himself in.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Oh that chance of that.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
Maybe if he goes back to Barbados, we can find him.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
There were overlooking one small detail alone. You and I
are now in the same spot Tom Chase was. We're
alone on this island and there's.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
No way off. Tonight and every weekday night.

Speaker 5 (01:02):
Bob Bailey in the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with
the Action Tact Expenser coud America's fabulous freelance insurance investigator.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
Of ours, truly Johnny Dollar from Special Investigator Johnny Dollar
location Lagos Island, three hours by boat from Barbados and

(01:28):
the British West Indies to the Home Office Universal Adjustment
Girrel Hertford, Connecticut assignment the Phantom Chase matter. Expenc ac
Count continued, I was getting nowhere. I've been on the
trail of Tom Chase ever since he'd embattled one hundred
and twenty thousand dollars from his New York investment firm

(01:50):
and jump Baale first to New Orleans. There, a man
named Freddy Quintenna had offered to deliver Chase for a price,
but Quintana had wound up dead in an alley. Obviously,
Tom Chase didn't want to be delivered. I'd finally tracked
him to Barbados and found a fisherman who told me
he'd brought Chase here to Lagos Island. Chase's wife, Lola,
had flown to Barbados and insisted on coming with me

(02:11):
to the island, hoping she could convince her husband to
turn himself in, but instead Chase had maneuvered us away
from the boat I'd rented and had taken off in it.
And now Lola and I were out in the middle
of nowhere, but really nowhere.

Speaker 3 (02:24):
What are we going to do? Johnny?

Speaker 2 (02:27):
Well, that's a good question. Mollo police inspector whitsit back.
And Barbados told me that nobody comes near Lagos Island anymore,
not even fishermen. We may be here quite a while.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
But we don't even have any food.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
Well, let a bandon house across the island where your
husband was hiding. Could be this food in it that
he brought?

Speaker 3 (02:45):
Would you do me a favor, Johnny?

Speaker 2 (02:48):
And what is it?

Speaker 3 (02:49):
I just assume you didn't keep calling Tom my husband.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
He is?

Speaker 3 (02:53):
Isn't he legally? Yes?

Speaker 4 (02:55):
When I found out he wasn't traveling alone, but it
was a woman who arranged his hiding place in New
New Orleans, I guess I just quit thinking of him
as my husband.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
Oh how do you think of him now?

Speaker 3 (03:06):
Is a confused animal on the run.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
He doesn't seem very confused to me. One thing I
don't get though, what's that? Well, that night in Barbados
before you arrived, when Chase slug me over the head
in that waterfront warehouse. Why didn't he finish me off?
Then he had a chance to take me off his
trail for keeps, and today here on the island, those
shots of his were plenty.

Speaker 4 (03:25):
While Johnny, I keep telling you Tom is no killer.
I know he's an embezzler running away from the law,
but I can't believe he killed that man from Anna,
New Orleans.

Speaker 2 (03:33):
You can't believe, or won't believe, Oh.

Speaker 3 (03:38):
Won't believe. I guess.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
Yeah, Well, I'm gonna build a fire here on the beach.
It's just possible. About my pass near enough to the
island to see it.

Speaker 4 (03:47):
It's funny, mm, the way things work out. Oh, timing
is always so bad. What do you mean, Oh, you
and me here under other circumstances. I don't really think
i'd mind being here with you at all, Johnny, I.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
Uh, I think i'd better start building that fire. We
collected a pilot of driftwood and brush and touched a
match to it. Then we went across the island to
the house where Chase had been hiding out. It was
a pretty wrickedy affair, but he left some food after
we did, and we went back and built the fire higher.

(04:26):
Then we waited. He always dragged by, and I was
sure Chase was getting farther and farther from me all
the time, but there was nothing I could do about it. Finally,
I guess that does dog, Johnny? What is what?

Speaker 3 (04:45):
Look coming around the point out there?

Speaker 2 (04:48):
A boat?

Speaker 3 (04:49):
Come on, let's get out where they can see. What's
the matter.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
That could be the fisherman who brought Chase here. If
he's working with Chase, maybe he's coming here to try
and finish us off. Johnny, Do you hey, wait, that's
a police boat. Yeah, it's inspecta whitson.

Speaker 6 (05:03):
Thank Heaven, come one. Inspector, Yes, inspector, yes, yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
Aside from getting shot at a couple of times, A
bit of a girl, eh pretty once sided? Go oh, inspector,
you are the most beautiful sight we've seen all day.
Oh man, When I couldn't graize you by radio, decided
to come and have a look. See who's streets? Who knows?
He pinned us down on the underbrush with a few
shots while he circled around behind us and took off
on the boat. I see, I wonder why about halfway

(05:39):
here I saw a boat in the distance. Was too
far away from me to see who was in it.
Which way was it heading back towards Barbados, And let's
get this boat cranked up, Inspector. Maybe you've got a
chance after all. I imagine Barbados looks pretty good again to
you too, It certainly does in Yeah, and said you

(06:01):
came along and looked like we were going to turn
out to be long as islands, all as citizens. Oh yeah. Incidentally,
mister Dollar, do you know a chap named George Jefferson. Yeah. Sure,
he's the senior partner of the firm chasing vessel of
money from New York.

Speaker 3 (06:15):
He's an old friend, Inspector.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
Why, Well, he dropped in on me just before I
shoved off, said he'd wait for you at your hotel.

Speaker 3 (06:22):
George here and Barbados.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
Well, I found him earlier, and he said he was
going to catch the first plane he could and come
down here. Why, mainly to take you back to New York.

Speaker 3 (06:30):
Now, Johnny, we've been all over there, yes.

Speaker 2 (06:32):
And I still think you want to. Hey, hold it,
what's the matter that boat on the other side of
the pier tied up there?

Speaker 3 (06:38):
It's the boat we went to the island in.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
Yeah, sure, so Chase did come back to Barbados. Good.
I'll have the airlines and steamships watched, and I'll get
word to the fishing and charter boat. If Chase is there,
I think we can keep him bottled up. Inspector Whist
took off to cover all the bases, and I took
a Lolla back to a hotel. When I got to mind,

(07:02):
George Everson was waiting for me. I took him to
my room.

Speaker 7 (07:07):
Any luck on Lago's Island, mister Dollar, Oh yeah, all
of it bad? Uh you were sure it's really Chase.
You've been trailing all the way.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
Freddy Quintana, New Orleans stole a letter from him, one
that he'd started to Lola. It matched the sample of
Chase's writing you gave me New York. And when he
grabbed our boat on Lagos Island, Lola got a look
at him and recognized him.

Speaker 7 (07:27):
Uh. How's Lola holding up on her all this?

Speaker 2 (07:29):
Oh? I don't know. She says she's all over being
hurt that once she found out there was another woman
involved that killed her feeling for Chase. I'm not so
sure that, mister Dollar, neither of mine. Lola was completely
devoted to Tom. She was badly hurt by his embezzlement,
and I think she's still being hurt. Well, in any case,
i'd feel a lot better if she'd clear out. Well,
as you know, I came down here to take her back,
but on the way I started.

Speaker 7 (07:51):
Thinking about it. Oh, as long as she is here,
perhaps she could be a big help to us. Oh
so well, I still think Tom Chase would listen to Lola,
even if he wouldn't listen anyone else. Nobody could change
that much.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
I wouldn't count on that, mister Everson.

Speaker 7 (08:04):
Yeah, still, it's worth a try. Now, if it could
only work out so that Lola could talk to Tom,
or better yet, if Lola and I.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
Both could talk to him, or what would you say
to him?

Speaker 7 (08:13):
I don't know what Lola would say, but for me,
I'd put it to him that his only hope of
straightening himself out is to turn himself in and turn
over whatever the embezzled money is left all.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
Look, I'd even go so far.

Speaker 7 (08:23):
As to guarantee the eventual restitution to our investors of
whatever amount he's already spent I know, to take time.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
Well, that's pretty generous of you, mister Everson. But I'm
afraid you're a little too late. Why in the first place.
Tom Chase obviously is not going to turn himself in.
He's had plenty of chances to up to now, and
he hasn't exactly jumped at them. But if I think
it's well, I think he's got a good reason for
not turning himself in. It's better than an even chance.
He's the one who knocked off Freddy Contana, New Orleans,
the man who offered to turn Tom over to you

(08:50):
for a price. That's the one. Oh no, mister Everson.
At this point, it looks like there's only one way
for me to get Tom Chase, and that's to track
him down and drag him in expense account out of
twenty seven a dollar twenty American cab fare from my
hotel to Colonial Police headquarters to check with Inspector Wistt, who,
fortunately for me, he was being most cooperative. Chase hasn't

(09:14):
contacted any of the airlines or steamship lines. We're in
touch with the charter and fishing boats. He hasn't approached
any of them so far as we know. In other words,
the chances are good that he's still here. In Barbado.
That's the right question, is where right? Again, take a
look at this map and you will see our problem.
One hundred and seven to square miles more or less. Yeah,

(09:34):
he could be here in the city, around the sticks,
somewhere over here in the USL beach out het. I
somehow doubt that. Why, well, it's pretty fashionable spot. I
imagine Chase that tried to be as inconspicuous as possible. Yeah,
so he's probably hiding out in the city here. Well,
there are scores of hotels and rooming. Hearted, I don't
have enough men to excuse me. What's that here?

Speaker 1 (09:59):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (10:01):
Oh, what's the address? The thanks?

Speaker 1 (10:03):
I boy?

Speaker 2 (10:05):
Yeah, things are looking up, mister dollar. No, there's a
man answering TRACE's general description. Just checked dinn at the
hotel out in the north part of the city. It's
the room at the end of the hole, mister Donna. Okay,
let's not be polite, inspector. Let's use the pass key

(10:26):
the clerk gave us and bargeering in. Right. Ah, empty.
How about that closet? Nothing, windows open, and there's a
fire escape. He lives in the honey, you see there,
there's clothes on the trair. Yeah, that jacket, it looks
like the one he was wearing when he swiped my

(10:47):
boat on Longest Island City. We just missed his inspector.
I've been just missing him for the last ten days,
and believe me, I'm getting tired of it. Probably only
by a few minutes too, Sure, just a few minutes,
but it might as well be a year. I went
back to my hotel. I was beat. Being always one
jump behind Tom Chase was getting on my nerves. Sure

(11:10):
he was still in Barbados, but where that the rate
I was going catching him was turning into a full
time career, A career. I was getting fed up with you.
Then as I entered my room, I heard a slight
movement behind me, and I realized all of a sudden
that I wasn't alone.

Speaker 8 (11:25):
Don't turn around all why hold it very still?

Speaker 2 (11:28):
Okay, look, I can save you some time. It's my
gun you're looking for. It's in a show to host
a left side. You know. I just had a real
wild idea.

Speaker 8 (11:40):
I said, don't turn around and keep your hands in sight.

Speaker 2 (11:42):
Okay, My wild idea is that you're Tom Chase. Yeah,
Tom Chase, Why if I ask you a couple of questions.

Speaker 8 (11:53):
Why not?

Speaker 2 (11:55):
Why did you do it? The embezzlement? Was it because
of a woman?

Speaker 3 (12:01):
It was a woman?

Speaker 2 (12:02):
Was it turns sour? Oh? Worrishy?

Speaker 7 (12:06):
That doesn't matter anymore?

Speaker 2 (12:08):
And where's the money?

Speaker 8 (12:09):
That doesn't matter either. You won't get it.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
I see next question? Why did you come here to
my room? Chase.

Speaker 8 (12:17):
I've tried every trick I know to shake you Dollar.
None of 'em's worked. You've kept on coming. I can't
stand it anymore. I'm sick of running.

Speaker 2 (12:27):
Give yourself up, Chase. It's too late for that.

Speaker 8 (12:32):
There's another way.

Speaker 2 (12:33):
I've got to take you off.

Speaker 8 (12:35):
My trail once and for all.

Speaker 2 (12:36):
I might haven't.

Speaker 8 (12:36):
I love sorry, but that's the way it has to be.

Speaker 2 (12:40):
Dollar.

Speaker 8 (12:40):
