Speaker 1 (00:00):
Oh, guess what day it is?

Speaker 2 (00:03):
Guess what day it is?

Speaker 3 (00:05):
Huh?

Speaker 4 (00:06):
Anybody, It's hump Day.

Speaker 5 (00:12):
The wing gets it to Prince straight away, A three
in the air.

Speaker 3 (00:14):
Good hump.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
The Prince left in the circle.

Speaker 3 (00:17):
Another three, got it, gets it off the.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Prince on the wing. He goes around table, then back's
out shoots the three. Yes, switch, Johnson's got Prince.

Speaker 5 (00:27):
He'll shoot it anyone for.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Off the Prince.

Speaker 6 (00:33):
Will you go for five.

Speaker 5 (00:34):
Thirty butters straight away?

Speaker 3 (00:36):
Yes, I'll put this crowd.

Speaker 4 (00:40):
Wow, Oh my goodness, rapa.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
Rna is going there?

Speaker 4 (00:49):
What better way to start hump Day and Wednesday on
the big Blue side. Then with a look back at
a brand new Hall of Famer in one of his
shining moments at UK Dick Gabriel, would you that, of course?
Is the montage now famous? It's been famous for quite
a while the day he did it, it became famous
day Shaun Prince hitting five three pointers that basically opened

(01:12):
the win over North Carolina back in the day. He
is one of the newest members of the Kentucky Sports
Hall of Fame, that's the statewide sports Hall of Fame.
But also joining him is fellow Wildcat Randall Cobb so
many highlights for him. I chose this collection of plays.

(01:34):
It was basically the game winning touchdown and the two
point conversion plus the interception that sealed the win in
the victory in twenty ten over Steve Spurrier in South Carolina.
First time the Cats beat the Visor, and Randall Cobb
made the plays upcoming in motion rights, the two receivers
each way, hardline droughts, pressure covering.

Speaker 5 (02:00):
Tucky, everyone right.

Speaker 6 (02:07):
Unders and they give it to cops sleeping left end
bottles Allen goes.

Speaker 1 (02:11):
Then what two.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
Three receivers right two less save formations.

Speaker 4 (02:18):
It's the three man russell Kentucky.

Speaker 6 (02:19):
Garcia's thrown it to the far side of the field.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
And picked up.

Speaker 7 (02:29):
Put four seconds to play.

Speaker 4 (02:34):
Something I have never forgotten about that play is the
fact that the South Carolina quarterback looked immediately to his
right and was looking for that lob in the end zone.
Everybody likes that that back corner, so you know, over
the shoulder lob. Play under threw it a bit. Great
defensive coverage by two Kentucky players. Al Sean Jeffery was

(02:54):
on that South Carolina team. He lined up on the
left and I don't know if they did decided to
use him as a decoy or whatever, but never looked
in his direction. Probably the best wide receiver other than
Randall Cobb in the game that night and immediately went
to the opposite direction and it turned out to be

(03:16):
a Kentucky winzo. Congratulations to both of these former Wildcats.
They are now Hall of famers once again. They will
be if they haven't already been adducted into multiple halls
of fame, but they are now in the Kentucky Sports
Hall of Fame. Used to be the Kentucky Athletic Hall
of Fame. I was part of that for about twenty
five years. Now it's run by the Louisville Sports Commission

(03:39):
and they will be honored later in the year as
two of the newest Wildcats to go in. Lots to
talk about. Tonight here on the Big Blue Insider, coming up,
Aaron Gershan of the Cats Balls will make his final appearance.
He as moving on to a small college in Florida.
It will be the sports information director at New College
in Florida in Sarasota, Florida, and he will be replaced

(04:05):
by a young man by the name of Cole Park
who has been on the beat for a while. So
we hope to have Cole involved here in the Big
Blue and side of the way. We did Aaron, but
he has done. Aaron's done a great job with us
through the years. He started actually with the Big Blue
and Sider. He ran our website and then caught on
with the Cats Pause, moved away to Indiana for a

(04:25):
little while for a newspaper there, then back to the
Cats Pause and yeah, he did a great job for
us and was with us on Monday nights so as
well as Wednesdays when we have our regular lineup of guests.
So we'll have a new voice, I hope with Cole
Park starting with the Cat's Pause. So well here from
Aaron a little bit later on. Also, of course Sean Woods,

(04:48):
the head coach of Scott County and I but now
the coach of La FA Mia, the TVT entry involving
primarily Kentucky players UK based players, and he joined to
see each week, as does West End Bureau chief Gary Moore.
We will be hearing from him as well, plus a
couple of the newer Wildcats. We'll hear from them in
our next segment. Jaden Quaintans and Cam Williams. EA Sports

(05:13):
College Football twenty six is out and UK has released
the player ratings for some of the Wildcats involved. The
highest rated player in terms of skill level. If you
know the video game, you know what I'm talking about.
If not, players who are involved are assigned player ratings, which,

(05:34):
of course, within the algorithm of the game, allows them
to perform better than others. Josh Braun, offensive lineman a transfer,
is the highest rated player for the Wildcats. He has
a ninety one rating, and Dante dal has an eighty eight.
David Gusta has in eighty six. J Q Hardaway at

(05:57):
the defensive back also in eighty six, Eth McCowan in
eighty six, and running back Jamerian Wilcox as an eighty four.
Jamerion Wilcox might end up being the secret sauce for
this Kentucky team. If he can be more consistent, add
some maturity to his game, keep his shoes tied, he

(06:18):
could be a really big play guy for the football
Wildcats coming up. Showed flashes of it all year long
last year, so I'm really excited to see. I don't
know if he'll be the starter who gets the most
reps out of that backfield, but he has that kind
of potential. I'm excited, maybe more than any player to

(06:39):
watch him this coming season. While we're talking about video games,
you may have seen this came out late yesterday, but
on the NBA two K twenty six, of course, on
the cover Shay Gildess Alexander, the former Wildcat now an
NBA champion and NBA MVP Playoffs MVP, you know the drill.
He is the third Kentucky player former Wildcat ever to

(07:02):
grace that cover Devin Booker in twenty twenty three, Anthony
Davis twice in twenty twenty and twenty twenty six. I
don't know if there's a jinx or not involved, but
Shay Gildess Alexander above all else, deserved it more than
anybody in my humble opinion. While we're talking honors, Kentucky

(07:24):
Volleyball picked preseason by long shot to win the conference
once again to repeat as SEC champion. Four players named
preseason All Conference, led by Brooklyn Delay of course, also
frontliner Brooke Baltimore, Ava Hudson, Molly Tuzzo, who took over

(07:45):
as the starting libro last year about in the middle
of the year, and did a sensational job helping to
lead the Wildcats to an SEC title. But Brooklyn Delay
is the reigning twenty twenty four SEC Player of the Year,
well if she was that last year, so the raining player.
And of course Craig Skinner was named twenty twenty four

(08:05):
SEC Coach of the Year, so she is an obvious
choice on that all conference team. So again we will
talk more volleyball with Craig Skinner tomorrow on the Big
Blue Insider, Getting ever closer to college football fifty two
days away. Thank you to Corey Price. He posts every
day on his Twitter feed how many days away? And

(08:28):
today's photo is Drake Jackson War number fifty two. And
it's fitting because, as everybody knows and anybody can tell you,
the old line for Kentucky will be a huge question mark,
the question mark for this upcoming season totally rebuilt thanks
to the portal, and the reference is always the Big
Blue Wall, which, actually, according to my man Freddy Maggert,

(08:52):
was born back in twenty sixteen before Drake Jackson began playing.
John Toathe was actually in middle. But you had Landing Young,
you had Nick Haynes, you had Logan Stenberg, John toath,
Bunchie Stallings at guard, Georgiasapawa j Kyle Meadows at right tackle.

(09:15):
Of the following year, in twenty seventeen, they moved Bunchie
to center and it didn't work out as well as
they had hoped. He did okay, but he had trouble
with some of the shotgun snaps and they had a
youngster named Drake Jackson from Versailles, so they finally gave
him a chance. We thought he'd get a chance to
start earlier, but they tried Bunchie there. They slide Bunchie

(09:37):
back to right guard, they start Drake Jackson, and pretty
soon the Big Blue Wall was operating incredibly well, and
Bunchie went on to become an All American at right guard.
Drake became an All Conference performer eventually at center, and
that twenty seventeen team set records thirty six rushing touchdowns

(10:04):
and more than thirty six hundred yards rushing. So yeah,
good to see Drake Jackson's picture along with Corey Price's
reminder fifty two days away from college football. One other
note before we hit the break. This came out late yesterday.
Jackson Jelkin, you probably have not heard of Unless you

(10:26):
are really into Kentucky baseball is coming back. Jackson Jelkin,
who War number zero. If you went the UK games,
you saw him in action coaching first base. He was
the first base coach just about all season long because
he's recovering from arm surgery. He pitched first at Nebraska,

(10:47):
then he won JUCO, then he went to Houston, pitched
at Houston for a year, hurt his arm at the
end of the year, came through the portal to Kentucky
based primarily solely on potential. But think about this. Here's
a guy who was drafted twice, already drafted out of

(11:08):
high school, then drafted again out of Houston University of
by the Mets in the ninth round. And this is
governed an arm injury. But he struck out forty six
and only thirty four to thirty, averaged twelve strikeouts per
nine innings, and can throw up to ninety seven miles

(11:29):
an hour with a good changeup. So he announced yesterday
that he is removing his name from draft consideration and
will come back and pitch at Kentucky. Said, my ultimate
goal is to be a big leaguer. I think my
continued development by coach Roselle, Coach Benngeone and their entire

(11:50):
staff is the best path to that dream. Big Blue
Nation has become my home. I don't remember what game
it was, but Jackson Jelkin got into it with the
other team or umpires or whatever, and he was basically
excused from coaching duty for the rest of the game,
kind of sent back to the dugout. But he'll he

(12:12):
could be a weekend starter. That's how good this kid is.
All right. Up next, wee hear from two of the
new Basketball Cats at the bottom of the hour. Aaron
gershaan our number two, Sean Woods and Weston Bureau chief
Gary Moore here on hump Day six point thirty wlap
Welcome back to the Big Blue and Cider. Dick Gabriel
with you. Coming up, Aaron gershan of the Cat's Pause
for the last time, joining us as a member of

(12:34):
the Cat's Paws staff. He'll talk about Kentucky football and
basketball SEC Football media days coming up next week. And
Aaron was there when we talk with two of the
new Wildcats. He had already talked to Cam Williams for
Peace for the magazine in a while back. But the
rest of us got a chance to talk with these
two new guys. And it's amazing when you think about

(12:56):
Jaden Quaintons, who does have to sit for a while now.
He's recovering from a on acl. He had committed to
Kentucky to play under John Caliperry, and then when cali
Peri left, Quaintan's changed and he decided to go to
Asu and be a sun devil. And back in February,
he blew his knee, his right knee, so he is

(13:16):
still recovering from that. And I asked him, was there
a time table? He said, no, it just he'll listen
to the doctors, listen to the trainers, listen to his body,
and he'll be back when he can. But I had
forgotten about this. Here's a kid who he's big, right,
so immediately you don't think of him as just being
a kid, but he is. Plus he skipped a year

(13:38):
of high school. He played last season at age seventeen,
and I don't think he's turned eighteen yet, but even
if he has, he should still be in high school.
And yet he's about to start his second year of
college basketball. So he was recruited by Kentucky. He was
set to come to Kentucky. He had made campus vi

(14:00):
iss maybe one or more, I don't know how many,
but it was weird when he talked about being back
in Lectionington and ready to go as a Kentucky Wildcat.

Speaker 8 (14:12):
It's definitely great to be back. You know, it's a
little different when I first committed, But I really trust
in what Coach Popa is going here. I really trust
in the guys that we have here, and I'm really
excited for the things that we could do here. I
think it's gonna be a great time and I'm really
excited to see, you know what this run looks like.
I really feel like we have a great chance to
win number nine And I'm super excited.

Speaker 4 (14:30):
When you say what coach polkas going on here, what
do you mean by it?

Speaker 8 (14:34):
You know, just how he was able to transform the
offense next year, scoring multiple hundred point games, you know,
play with play with pace, and surprise so many people.
You know, it was a lot of questions about what
it would look like with a new guy coming to
run the program, and the first year he made it
to sweet sixteen, Like, that's that's really hard to do.
So I trust that with him being able to recruit
the way he wanted to this year and the team

(14:56):
that he put together, that we have a chance to
win it all, and that.

Speaker 4 (14:59):
Was me as him to be a little more specific
about what he saw and what Mark Pope is doing
at UK and what they are doing, even though he's
sitting out right now getting essentially mental reps watching from
the sideline, He like every other player, has talked a
lot about the potential for this Kentucky team when it

(15:19):
comes to defense.

Speaker 8 (15:21):
Oh, we have a chance to be great defensively this year.
We have one of the biggest and longest teams in
the country, and I feel like that's gonna, you know,
kind of pop out in the games a lot. I
feel like everybody's buying in and we have people pressing
full court, we have people in godge people and help
and the way we rotate, I feel like we're going
to surprise a lot of people defensively.

Speaker 4 (15:38):
Keep in mind, this kid is a shot blocker, and
Malachai Moreno is going to be back there swatting away shots.
So it's interesting to hear the players who are they're
making available to us, both the new guys and the
returning guys talk about defense. Nobody talked about defense this
time last year, and as you know, we'll talk to Sean,

(16:00):
it was more about this this team suffered or last
year's team. It's you know, a new team this year.
But last year's team suffered defensively at times and at
some of the worst times until that Old Miss game
when the Rebels just embarrassed I thought the Wildcats, and
Mark Pope mentioned that when the team made its defensive turnaround.

(16:22):
He talked about the fact that that was a turning point.
He said in the next day when they got home
and the next practice after the Old Men's loss, they
really clamped down defensively. He mentioned Kobe Bray in particular,
but as a team and statistically algorithmic of whatever, they

(16:43):
really did a turnaround defensively and it made all the
difference down the stretch. So evidently, I don't know if
Pope is changing the way he's doing business now preseason
or if it's just the potential that these guys are
seeing as they go five on five, but defense is

(17:04):
going to be huge. It sounds like at least a
focal point early in the year for this team. Cam
Williams also talk with us. He is the transfer from Tulane,
and yeah, he talked about defense as well.

Speaker 7 (17:16):
I feel that we all switch one through five. We
got the guys to do it, and really coach emphasizes on,
you know, playing hard defense and not really letting the
offense kind of get what they want. So we just
kind of disrept what they're trying to do. It they
won't be able to be able to mess with us.

Speaker 4 (17:31):
Williams also talked about the offense. I asked him about
the fact that players had told us that the Mark
Pope offense and the Pope talks about it as well,
it's a little different, little more complicated. Was he having
any additional challenges picking it up? And he said, notch
this ball.

Speaker 7 (17:46):
It's really not like too much. It's really like just
playing basketball. At the end of the day. They try
to give us an I would say, different sets for
us to really just play basketball because all the NOI
really is just basketball.

Speaker 4 (17:58):
So something else going on right now. As you might expect,
every team in America is doing this right now with
new faces. They're working on bonding, getting to know each other, chemistry,
and Williams said, the Wildcats are no different.

Speaker 7 (18:12):
I really were just you know, compete, you know, play
fives every day. You know, might play video games where
the mall go beat together, you know, stuff like that.
So just finding anything outside of basketball, it's a really
good to bond. It's very important for the team.

Speaker 4 (18:24):
That's Cam Williams. And you might recall that he committed
coming through the portal during the nca tournament. He didn't
waste any time, and he made it sound like he
wanted to take full advantage as quickly as he could
because there were limited slots available. He knew and he
wanted to jump in there and become a wildcat before

(18:44):
somebody could beat him to the punch. So that's one
of the reasons Cam Williams is a wildcat. Up next
to Aaron gershan of the Cat's Balls a little bit
later on Sean Woods The Unforgettable Guard and Weston Bureau
chief Gary Moore here on six thirty WLAP welcome back.
He hit a big momin sider, joining us now for
the last time as a staff writer for the Cats. Boss.

(19:05):
I'm sure we will hear from Aaron Gershawn again, but
he's moving on to a new job in Florida in
the very near future, so we wish you luck on that.
We'll come back to that, though, Aaron, we do need
to talk about what's going on. Of course you and
I talked about I guess it was last week. Will
Kentucky takes some good talkers to SEC media days, and

(19:28):
it looks like they've made some pretty good choices, right yeah.

Speaker 5 (19:32):
I mean I definitely love the Josh Chatus pick. I
think that that was a no brainer. I mean, that's
the guy who's entering year four in the program, you know,
has been through three offensive coordinators. He's been through you know,
two okay years. I guess by the new standards that
Kentucky's one really not so good year, but kind of
been there for all of it, has a really good personality,
So completely agreed with that pick. Al Safari is a

(19:56):
very good young man. He's a versatile player, another guy
who's been through it here for three years. He's a
little bit on the quiet side. So utably interesting to
see if the media down there in Atlanta, which is
I believe, No, he's from Ohio. I always get if
he's Georgia, Ohio. He's from Ohio. But you know, that's
a guy that'll be interesting to see if they could

(20:17):
him the crack a little bit, and then Jordan love
it is a is a very good ambassador of the program. Obviously,
guy in state, guy who's been here, another one who's
been here for multiple years, uh seven career interceptions, So
you know it makes sense. You know, selfishly, I know
I'm obviously not going to be there, but I love
I wanted them to send his Eyah Pete because I
just think that's a golden opportunity. And you do see,

(20:39):
you know, some of these schools across the league sending
their incoming transfers. I saw Jackson Arnold who transferred from
Oklahoma to Auburn is going to represent the Tigers. So
you know, it's not unheard of to send these new
transfers in too media days. And I just think with
all the stuff that's out there with Kentucky, I think
that would have been a golden opportunity to get some

(20:59):
really good clips out there and get some good things
rolling and market a guy who think you guys are
just gonna love you. You've already i think, talked to
him once and you'll just or twice maybe and you'll
just continue to see that throughout the year. I mean
that guy is as unique as they come. So I
thought they they missed an opportunity there. Now that I'm

(21:21):
an s I D are going to be an s
I D, I just that would be something I would
have done. But you know, Foxes event she knows what
she's doing. But obviously it's a little bit interesting that
that they went with Afari. But I get it because
he's been with the program for long.

Speaker 4 (21:38):
As you know at media days, and I went last year,
but I hadn't been in a while, and I used
to go every year to both football and basketball. One
of the I don't know if traditions is the right word,
but what happens is media people, of course, talk to
each other out in the hallway and oftentimes is, hey,
have you talked to so and so, or did you
hear what's such and such said in this room? Maybe

(22:01):
you can get him to repeat it in your room
or something like that. And I really thought Pete would
be the guy that everybody said, if you heard from
this Kentucky old lineman, ask him about this or that
or whatever. But you know how good his opportunities and
I think the guys they chose are good. In the
good news is they all contributed, They've all made plays.

Speaker 2 (22:21):
You know.

Speaker 4 (22:22):
Ques and I talked at lengthd about Katis earlier in
the week because I rewatched I don't know if you did,
but I rewatched that Kentucky ol Miss game on UK
Takeover Day on the SEC network, and everybody remembers that
Caddis made that grab of the loose ball fell into
the end zone for the winning touchdowns, one of the
most important touchdowns in UK history. Literally, I had forgotten

(22:46):
Aaron that he dropped a wide open pass at a
crucial point in the game, and it was such a
painful moment. The director twice went to a tight shot
of Caddis. You could see the agony on his Yeah,
that's why you felt so good for him when he
scored that touchdown. So I wonder if.

Speaker 5 (23:06):
I would think, yeah, you would think you would think so.
Especially look Kentucky. I believe they're either they're definitely on
the last day. I know last year they closed shop.
I think they might be closing shop again, uh this year.
So there is like a really good last day question
right there, and it'll really get brought up. I mean
that play, like you said, I mean, it saved last

(23:28):
year from being a winless SEC season and also gave
them what was it was it their highest ranked winning
program history since LSU. I believe it's the highest strength
to win program win of the Stoops era. So yeah,
just a moment, like you said, that will definitely go
down in UK history, despite you know, last year not.

Speaker 2 (23:45):
Going well at all.

Speaker 5 (23:45):
I mean you'll you'll always have that and you know,
his head's up play there, you know, saved it from
being uh the storylines being Kentucky's coming in coming off
a last place finish in the SEC.

Speaker 4 (23:56):
Yeah, and it was the highest ranked win on the
road for Kentucky that's right, nineteen seventy eight. So there
are different different ways to categorize it. Talking to Aaron
Gershan to the Catspaws SEC football media days coming up
next week, Alex safari I spoke to him, among many
others A lot of people did on UK media Day

(24:17):
last year about his move from safety. I think it
is two linebackers. They wanted him closer to the ball.
He is a playmaker, but undersized as SEC linebackers go.
I asked him, how do you think it's going to go,
and he just basically said, wait and see, which on
the one hand, sounded confident. On the other hand, he
had no idea. I thought he did fairly well, but

(24:41):
that was the defense that struggled at times, made but
really played well at Ole Miss. But now he's got
that year of experience at linebacker behind him. That's only
a plus, you know.

Speaker 5 (24:52):
Shoot, yeah, especially and especially given obviously don't like the
way it played out. But when Derek Jackson went down
for the second half of last year year als, Farry
was in the starting lineup and there was even one game,
I believe it was Murray states that jaman ju Mus
Johnson didn't play either. So with out your two starting
inside backers in Afari really got to play, you know,

(25:13):
at both levels, that inside linebackers position. And I thought,
like you said, I thought it was okay. I thought
for sure there were some adjustment and adjustments you know,
being made on the fly, some missd assignments, some mis
gaps whatever.

Speaker 2 (25:25):
You know.

Speaker 5 (25:26):
When I talked to Brad White now that our football
yearbooks out, he read the Q and A there about
how we thought a Fari transition. You know, he was
pretty complimentary. He just thinks, like you said, the reps
that he got there the starts. I think there's seven
of them. It is only going to help him a
ton going into this year where they're really going to
need him because not only is he penciled into the

(25:46):
starting lineup, but you go look in that inside linebacker
room and you know Brad White was confident about the
deaths and that's his job to be confident about the depth,
and look, I hope he's right, but it gets pretty
thin after Afari and David Raider. I mean you're talking
Landon wantson the chanfer from Marshall, who really has only

(26:06):
played a lot of football in one season, and then
you're looking at guys like Grank God for you, another
guy who was an outside backer that moved in that
has I think has one career start and is under
his belt and that was against Murray. And it gets
even thinner from there. So they're really going to need
him to not only stay healthy but be productive there.

Speaker 4 (26:24):
Afari has started eighteen games over the last two years,
including six last year, moving two linebackers, third on the
team in total tackles even though he didn't start every game,
and led the team in tackles for loss with eleven,
and that's what I like the most about him because
being a little bit on the small side six two

(26:44):
two twenty seven, he is faster, I think than your
average SEC linebacker and that enables Brad White to bring
him off the edge if he wants to and that
kind of thing. So plus, I'd forgotten about this Aaron.
He had ten tackles against both Tennessee and Louisville, so
always around the ball. That's that's huge.

Speaker 5 (27:06):
Yeah, and he's a guy too that I'm glad you
said that about Louisville specifically. Like you go watch the
tape of that Louisville game where you go watch the replay.
I don't think any Kentucky fan wants to go back
and watch that game, but you're gonna see a lot
of guys who they were done with the season. There
was in a there were different levels of effort in
that game that he would see with a you know

(27:27):
three to oh team early in the year, or even
a team that was you know, six and five like
they were going into that game in twenty twenty three.
I mean, I'm not going to name any names, but
you could see it all over the field. You didn't
see that a second from Alice Afari. He was all
over the field making plays and had showed up in
the box score. And look, Louisville ran the ball all

(27:48):
over Kentucky that day. But Afari was super productive. And
again he wasn't the issue in that game in Tennessee even.
I mean that was game Kentucky actually played pretty darn
well on the defensive side of the ball. The offense
really just couldn't give them enough time to take a
break when Kentucky was down to three dB or three
corners by the end of that football game with.

Speaker 2 (28:08):
All the injuries that piled up.

Speaker 5 (28:10):
So you know, if Ai had some really good moments
late in the year as he got more and more comfortable,
and I think, you know, having not only two off
seasons now of training at that position, but six career
starts through and knowing he's going to be the guy.
He's a senior on a defense that yes, there are
some other seniors, but not that many seniors outside of

(28:31):
a couple others that have been in the program as
long as he has. I mean, it's really off the
top of my head him and love it right. I mean,
Hardaway even has been here for three years, but started
his career at Cincinnati, So he's going to be counted
on in a ton of different ways, and I think
you'll see him take a big step and be a
lot more comfortable at that spot.

Speaker 4 (28:49):
Aaron Gershaana the catch pause, we will step at and
come back and talk a little basketball. But Aaron on
the other side of the break here on six point
thirty wlap welcome back. We're talking with aaronsh of the
Cat's Pause. He is wrapping up his career with the
Cat's Pause this week before moving on to work at
a college in Florida as a sports information director. So

(29:09):
you're going to a small school down there, but you'll
keep an eye, of course on the big school up
here when it comes to basketball, that is the Wildcats.
And you had a chance to chat earlier this week
with the Cam Williams. You had already done I think
an interview with him, and also Jaden Quaintans. Let me
start first with Jaden. I had forgotten Aaron. We all
know that he had committed to be a Wildcat and

(29:31):
played for John Calli. Perry had second thoughts when Calt
Perry left goes to Arizona State. So it was weird
when he said Yeah, it's good to be back, but
this is a guy once his knee. The plan is
once his knee recovers, once he recovers from knee surgery,
he will be one of those defensive presences. Yeah, that's
the word back under the bucket. And all these guys,

(29:54):
Aaron are talking about defense, which we did not hear
in the summertime last year. What do you make that huge?

Speaker 5 (30:02):
First of well, just starting to the second point. First,
it has been a talking point of every single player
that has spoken so far this offseason about defense, and
you did not have those same talking points when we
were doing these last summer. Not that I don't think
there was a lack of effort there. I just think
they didn't have the guys who had the decorated pass

(30:23):
on that end of the court. And I think even
you know, go back and look at the stats from
Mark Pope's time at BYU and even Utah Valley the
extent like he was, none of his teams were ever
elite or even great defensively. They were good to average
to below average defensively, and I think last year was
kind of you talk about learning, learning and just experience

(30:45):
and growing, which you're gonna see, you know, guys like
Brendan Garrison, Trent Noo, and Colin Chandler hopefully take a
jump as they grow in the system. I think Mark
Pope had to grow and learn when he got to
this conference and got to a place like Kentucky just
how much he needed to emphasis, emphasize on defense and
get guys that can really bring it physicality wise. It's

(31:06):
not effort alone is not going.

Speaker 2 (31:08):
To do it. You got to bring in some just
dues to win on.

Speaker 5 (31:11):
The defensive end here, and Jayden Quainton's you know, circling
back and tying it all in. That's the that's what
you're looking for. A guy who averaged two and a
half blocks per game at sixteen years old in the
Big twelve six' nine of the seven three. Wings then
a guy really who if he, wasn't if he was
eligible for THE Nba, draft would have been probably a

(31:32):
first round pick this, year even maybe for the. Injury
but if he hadn't got, hurt probably still would have been.
One and now as long as he's healthy and in
place to his, capabilities is going to be either a
lottery pick or first round pick in the twenty sixth,
Drafts so you, know that's a talent that you, know
frankly they didn't have last year in the front court

(31:52):
or really. Anywhere it's a guy that you, know and
you talked about how he said it feels good to be.
Back he's a guy from EVERYTHING i heard one to be.
Here even through the coaching. Change it was more so
On kentucky's end With Mark pope trying to start. Over,
hey let's kind of just blow this thing up and
do it, all you, know from, Scratch and that's kind
of what happened, there and that's why you saw. That

(32:13):
quainton's obviously money, talks but he Chose Arizona state Over
arkansas or over Even, louisville who was in on. Him
SO i think this, MOVE i, mean.

Speaker 2 (32:24):
Look if he's healthy.

Speaker 5 (32:26):
That he could BE i think probably on, paper he's
going to be the biggest impact maker of anyone they
got in the, portal just because of what he can
do in the defensive end and even on the offensive
end as. Well but as we, know those, injuries you
just gotta just get him on the floor and let's
see what. Happens because you don't want to you don't
want to jinx it and you just AN. ACL i,
mean he had the Surgery, march so we'll. See but

(32:49):
you got to love what he brings if he's.

Speaker 4 (32:51):
Healthy one thing you need to understand anybody, does is
you cannot compare other athletes and their injuries and their
recovery in their timeline to any. Other everybody's. Different i've
recovered from three knee surgeries, myself and they were all. Different.
Uh and and please keep in mind, that you, know
ACL's as tough as they. Are it's the rehab that

(33:16):
is the key That i've had a surgeon tell. Me you,
know the surgery itself is. Routine putting the knee back
together unless they've, shredded everything is fairly. Routine it's the,
rehab you. Know and everybody's different. There but, uh keeping
My kentucky had not this past baseball, season but the
year before had a left fielder who blew HIS acl

(33:36):
playing summer baseball and was back in. Time kentucky get
to The World series as An all star left. Fielder
so you, know you just got to just got to
take it as it. Comes AS i, mentioned you would
already talked With Cam. Williams how do you see him fitting.
In what is his game and what Did kentucky fans?

Speaker 5 (33:52):
Expect, yeah he's a, look he was a not only
a really good, shooter but did it at a high
volume last year right where you were looking At Moda
base for, example and Sans a like probably only took
twenty six. Threes how accurate is that forty six to
two point forty six point two percent? Mark and we'll.
SEE i think he's definitely gonna take more than twenty.
Six but With Cam williams he took over one hundred

(34:14):
and sixty threes and was that, Percent LIKE i understand
it was that too lane and not AGAINST scc, defenders
but you know forty one percent that volume is is.
Elite and that's the guy who you go look at
a shot, chart he all ends of the three point, line,
corner straight away wing WHEREVER i mean. ELBOW i mean
that guy is just a knockdown shooter and he's a weapon.

(34:36):
There and he has really good. SIZE i mean he's
six' eight with a. Long wingspan he averaged over a
block per game.

Speaker 2 (34:43):
Last year on the.

Speaker 5 (34:43):
DEFENSIVE end i think that's something in his game. That's
UNDERRATED so i think he's a guy that YOU. Know
nba he's definitely GOT an nba body AND an, nba
PROTOTYPE which i know has. Excited scouts he's a guy
that's definitely gotten some buzz in, the draft, you know
early mock drafts for twenty six to see his name
kind of late first in early. SECOND round i don't

(35:03):
it's going to be interesting what his role is going
to be on this, team though because HE'S definitely i
would say he's going to be. A three he could
probably tween her and play, the four but, you know
there's kind of a log jam of those. Two positions
they just have a lot of really good. Players there
but if he shoots to, his capabilities he's going to be,
a really really hard guy to keep off. The FLOOR and,
i think you know something that was really interesting that

(35:25):
he said yesterday that he didn't mention to ME when
i spoke to Him. In april he was asked who
His favorite kentucky, player was and first time ever it
Was a. Pope player he said It Was. Kobe, breya
yeah and he said it was because of the way
he was able to shoot and what he was able
to do in the. Offensive END and, i, think look if.

Speaker 2 (35:43):
They get I'm not.

Speaker 5 (35:45):
There's not many Guys Like kobe brea who just anytime
he puts it up it felt like it was going
in coin flip shooter about, you know fifty percent a
date and then last year in the. Mid forties but,
you know this is a guy who has a true
pressman last year did shoot forty one percent at. HIGH volume,
i mean if they're going, to get if they're going
to have AN elite i think they're going to have

(36:07):
be a good three point shooting. TEAM overall i don't
know if they have, any elite elite shooters on. This
roster if there, IS one i think it's gonna end Up,
being campbelliams which is what he did, Volume wise, AND
yeah i think the volume. Was there he's the only
guy on this roster that has high volume three point
shooting in their career that has been highly successful. At

(36:28):
it and again that's not TO say I Think jalen
low's percentage is going to get better because he has
better players. AROUND him I think i Don't think diaboti
is gonna shoot forty, six PERCENT but i think he's
still going to be a really good three shooter at
the Higher volume aberdeen, as well but, you know he's
he was at thirty five, last year probably being around.
The same it's not a, little better but this is
the guy on the roster who can kind of be

(36:51):
that that.

Speaker 2 (36:52):
Light up shooter.

Speaker 5 (36:53):
FOR you i really believe that it's just going to
be interesting to see what role he can cut out
with so many bodies at.

Speaker 2 (36:59):
THAT position i.

Speaker 4 (37:00):
Only got about a, minute left but there's time enough
for you to tell us about how much you've enjoyed
working For The cash Pause And darryl byrd and Covering.
The wildcats a great opportunity for you at an early
stage of.

Speaker 5 (37:11):
Your, CAREER yeah i wish i'd more than. A, minute
no you can't, control it, But gosh i've loved every second.
OF it i mean it's been nothing but outstanding cover,
this program, you, know, basketball football everything here at, this
level so many, amazing experiences, you know so thankful. To
you obviously you gave me a Chance With big Blue

(37:33):
and sider in twenty nineteen and obviously been on radio
seemingly every, week SINCE and i can't appreciate. That enough And,
then darryl, you know giving me my first full, time gig,
you know after college after one year working at a
smaller Paper. In indiana so it's been. A blast i
have so Many memories i'll look fondly. Back on and,
you know as we go down this path a sports,

(37:53):
information director, you know you never know could end up
back HERE at uk or IN. The sec that's the
goal at the end of. The day but this is
a position to get your foot in the door and
make a little. More Money and i'm excited to get.
That rolling, But man i'm gonna.

Speaker 4 (38:07):
Miss, it well thanks for all. Your time best of
luck to you and your better half And. TO barkley

team now, of course he plays For The Art Trival,

(38:30):
philadelphia eagles whom he carried or at least helped greatly
Win A. Super bowl, so again Really, appreciate aaron and
we will get To Know cole park, HIS replacement i

(40:50):

head coach Of the kentucky ENTRY, into Tbt The BASKETBALL Tournament.
Lapa media and before we get caught up on both of, Those,
teams coach let me ask you about A. Fellow wildcat,

(41:16):
you Know another wildcat just, like you who just like
You And john Pelfrey And darren Feldhouse And, richie farmer
your group going INTO The Uk athletic Hall of fame
And The Kentucky sports Hall. Of Fame tayshawn prince is
being inducted and is A statewide Hall. Of fame what
do you remember about him as. A player you, were gone,

(41:36):
of COURSE but i know you kept track of what.
Was happening and this guy he, was special.

Speaker 2 (41:40):
Wasn't, he yes. HE was, i mean, you know he had.

Speaker 3 (41:45):
A game he was a left handed modern Version Of
jamal wilkes, to me except he was a little bit
except he was a little. Bit taller but, his demeanor,
his game his, jump shot everything reminded You Of jamal wilkes.

Speaker 2 (42:02):
A little bit back in.

Speaker 3 (42:03):
The DAY and i know a lot, of people youngsters
out there, who's listening Don't Remember. Jamal Wilkes But jamal
wilkes was one of the was one of the best
small forwards in the history of of, pro basketball even
at u C. L.

Speaker 2 (42:16):
A so.

Speaker 3 (42:18):
But not, Only that tayshine was just such a mild
mannered young man and, still is, you know, very centered,
very level, low key but man when he was on,
the court boy he had he was quiet, out there
but man did he get. Things done and he's been
a winner everywhere. He's been, you know he Won for,

(42:39):
tubby here he had a great, career here and then
he went on With The detroit pistons and helped him
win a big Time national world championship and had probably.

Speaker 2 (42:49):
One of the most historical Blocks On.

Speaker 3 (42:52):
Reggie miller uh in the history of of OF the,
Nba too so no Kudos, TO tayshine i think as
WELL as i think he's one of the stewars and
one of the most modern modest people to ever play
At The.

Speaker 2 (43:06):
University kentucky and if you can.

Speaker 3 (43:08):
Say anything Bad About, tayshawn prince that means you're a bad,
person YOURSELF because i haven't found anything Bad About tayshawn
prince in the in the long TIME since i since
he walked in the doors OF, the uk, you KNOW
since i. Met him and he's just a hundred. Grand
person he's a big time player and it's.

Speaker 2 (43:28):
Well, deserved well.

Speaker 4 (43:30):
HE Was sec player Of the year and THE tournament mvp.
In one he Was An ALL american UH in uh
ONE and. O two, but yeah that That championship pistons
team back. In four people forget about That because detroit
eventually just kind of. Fell apart, but yeah he played
a long time from two to thirteen For, the pistons

(43:51):
but also spend time With, the grizzlies uh spent part
of a year With the Celtics. The timberwolves but that,
champion team, you know he was Four Times ALL Defensive
nba Team, second team and you're right. THAT block, I
Mean reggie miller was going in for. A BUCKET that.
I get, i think if, memory serves would have sealed,
the game, if not the championship For. The Pacers And

(44:14):
tayshaun prince came out. Of NOWHERE and i remember him
saying though, LATER on i don't want to be known
just as a. Defensive guy but his defense was so
good that oftentimes it overshadded, his offense didn't?

Speaker 3 (44:26):
It, well, now, Yeah yeah and he was a tough,
out too because he was such a mismatch at the small.
Forward position, you know you Had Big, ben wilace You
Had RASHID wiless, i think, you know and you had
him at six nine. Long arms, you know he made
it tough for, you know the other team's, best player

(44:48):
which was the three.

Speaker 2 (44:49):
Man most of.

Speaker 3 (44:49):
The time, you know he had the task of Guarding The,
reggie Millers The, kobe Bryant The. Lebron james so, you
know he does, get a, you know a reputation of
being a. Great defender, but man was he a silent
assassin and.

Speaker 2 (45:04):
A sniper you know.

Speaker 3 (45:05):
He was he could score the most Opportune times he's
very amidextrous with the way, he played, and man could
he shoot the lights out to make. Open shots but
he created his own two and need to be started the.

Speaker 4 (45:18):
Show tonight with his five three pointers he Had Against.
North carolina, you, know.

Speaker 3 (45:24):
Yes learn that one he hit almost from them from the.

Speaker 2 (45:28):
Half court it.

Speaker 4 (45:30):
Was, amazing uh you know. IT'S funny i was WORKING
The sec football championship game, that weekend, and uh Because
in kentucky was always in a big game On, that
saturday and somebody told me that. IT happened i SAID what, I,
said no that can he said he hit five three
pointers for. The, game no he opened the game with five.
THREE pointers i had to rush for shame and watch

(45:53):
him knock. That down and by, the way he graduated
on time of a degree. In Sociology so Congratulaum And.
RANDALL kop i know you're a big, football fan and
Of course randall went on to play for My Beloved Green.
Bay packers but that guy was a highlight reel in his,
own right.

Speaker 3 (46:07):
Wasn't, he yes he was a multi dimensional. OFFENSIVE due
i mean he could have been like the guy who
was that who Played For, dion senders who was the
number one pick IN the.

Speaker 2 (46:18):
Nfl. LINE yeah i thought he was that type of.

Speaker 3 (46:23):
Talent you know that can, play quarterback, running.

Speaker 2 (46:26):
BACK receiver i know he.

Speaker 3 (46:28):
Was good enough to play, defensive back just didn't have
to At the University. Of kentucky, but man was he
a big time talent and they went on to have
a great career With The Green.

Speaker 2 (46:37):
Bay.

Speaker 4 (46:37):
Packers, yeah yeah do you know he offered to play
safety if they. Needed him he. Wanted to he did
in high school like a lot of, kids did played
both ways and, there, no no, you're good just just,
you know keep doing what. You're doing, but yeah his
first time he touched the ball For, the packers he
ran it back for, a touchdown a kickoff for. A
touchdown so how?

Speaker 2 (46:57):
About, that, yeah anyway so.

Speaker 4 (46:59):
Congrats, To them but let us, Move on. Uh not
what is it less than two weeks AWAY. From tbt
what's going on with your team? Right?

Speaker 3 (47:07):
Now well nothing right now except for just getting everything
organized and getting these and getting, you know plenty is
getting things ready for these guys to.

Speaker 2 (47:15):
Come in. This weekend uh.

Speaker 3 (47:17):
Starts off kicks off with a, you know basketball Camp all,
star game and then we, you know have a big
time Meeting on sunday and crank it Up on monday
and to prepare for you know what could be a
memorable two.

Speaker 2 (47:32):
And a half.

Speaker 4 (47:33):
Three weeks we've talked in the past about the fact
that you'd such an advantage and you're not the only
team with guys, coming back but you've got some key players,
Coming back, so chemistry you've got a built in. Advantage
there but you do have, New, faces sean and everything happens,
so quickly as you know with, this team and it
happened so well. Last year, but uh do you even

(47:56):
concern yourself, with chemistry with bonding that you have to
do as a high school coach that college coaches have.
To do what about in a situation, Like, this.

Speaker 2 (48:06):
Well, you know, Last year i'll tell.

Speaker 3 (48:09):
You what after the first couple, of days it became
easy because we all knew what the mission was and
everybody bought into. THEIR roles i think it'll be the same.

Speaker 2 (48:18):
THIS year i think WE'LL be i think we'll be a.

Speaker 3 (48:21):
DEEPER team i think we'll be a. FASTER team i
don't think we'll be, you know we'll have a guy
that has to dominate, the ball, You Know eric bledsoe.
Was man we were so happy that in ecstatic to
have a talent like that and ALL pro.

Speaker 2 (48:38):
Nba.

Speaker 3 (48:38):
Guys yeah now we got some guys that, YOU know
nba guys and still. Playing OVERSEAS but i think the
ball will move a little. BIT better i think we're,
you know as good as we were last year defensively
holding teams under seventy points.

Speaker 2 (48:52):
A game, i mean we were just.

Speaker 3 (48:54):
SMOTHERING people i think we'll be even better with the defensive.

Speaker 2 (48:58):
Guys that we. Got NOW and i think.

Speaker 3 (49:00):
Overall we'll be a better shooting team from top.

Speaker 2 (49:04):
To bottom and we had.

Speaker 3 (49:05):
Big time We Had nate sustina who just shot the
lights out and unfortunately he had to, leave us which
kind of hampered our chances of winning once we got
to the.

Speaker 2 (49:14):
Semi finals but, You.

Speaker 3 (49:16):
Know duan lamb and guys, like that you know we'll,
better score, you know, more consistently play, a lot and,
be deeper deeper. Basketball team but not, ONLY that i
think we will be a faster team and transition and
it's going to, be fun it's going to. BE exciting
i think we got some guys that really love to
play and, play HARD and i think they got, the mission,

(49:37):
you Know With Willie caley stein and the twins coming
back And Also, enis canter, you know the nucleus, is
BACK and i think these guys saw what we did
last year and are very very excited of accomplishing and
kind of finishing the deal with this.

Speaker 4 (49:53):
Year's team you talked To the langes at the press
conference and then again with me on the show about
the fact that these guys so appreciate now more than
they did of course while they were here because they've
they've got the benefit of hindsight and perspective of being
a part Of the kentucky. Basketball program what it means

(50:13):
to them to wear that jersey. HOW much i got
to think that's enormous when it comes, to bonding, you
know with the guys coming back and the newer guys
and the fact that they get To be, wildcats again
that's got to be a. Huge, help oh no doubt.

Speaker 2 (50:28):
About it and, you know like like it was.

Speaker 3 (50:30):
Last year, you know you come in and your mission
and your goal is to just come in and then
go TO.

Speaker 2 (50:36):
The nba you don't you.

Speaker 3 (50:38):
Don't take in what is really pure at what this
place is. All about from a. Significant standpoint and now
these guys get to, come back spend two three weeks
really get, you know embrace who they are and and
and realize how significant they are here In. The commonwealth

(51:01):
and you know by playing At the University. Of kentucky, you,
know like, for instance the only one who, you know
now You got now we got two guys that spent
more than two, years here Which Is DeAndre liggins And
Also Willie cary steins who wants to move. Back here
so now you, got guys, you know Even, the twins,
you know who's spent more than one. Year here, you
know it's now you're starting to get some guys who

(51:24):
REALLY know, i think, You Know, duron lamb, you know
had a really good career, here too and he's, you
know his personality is going to, you know relish and
really appreciate, you know the time that he. Was HERE
so i think it's gonna be. EVEN better i think
Each Year twny beckham is really doing a great job

(51:44):
of really choosing the right fit and the right MIX
of uk players along with guys that has a connection.
With us it's getting more and more and bigger.

Speaker 2 (51:58):
And bigger, but man.

Speaker 3 (51:59):
He's on a great job of not just getting these
players to come in and, buy in and and and
and and understand. The mission not, only that but the
organization that. HE'S doing, i mean he's running the first.
CLASS organization i mean a lot OF these tvt teams
they're just putting, guys together showing up and. Doing, it
man he's treating this deal like it's, you know minor.

(52:20):
League basketball, YOU know i tell people all, the Time
And i'm i'm gonna be an advocate, for IT and
i hope you, are Too because i'm bragging on Him
because i'm in the trenches. With him this guy is
smart enough and needs to be in somebody's.

Speaker 2 (52:32):
FRONT office. I agree he's that good and.

Speaker 3 (52:35):
That talented he's got, the look he's got, the intelligence
he's got. The savvy, you know he's.

Speaker 4 (52:41):
Very.

Speaker 3 (52:42):
ARTICULATE man, i mean this, guy here man is on,
the ball and he just needs a chance for somebody
to just bring. Him up teaching the ropes a, little
bit and it ain't gonna take long before he can
be a superstar and in somebody's.

Speaker 2 (52:56):
Front office in his.

Speaker 4 (52:57):
Tournament has got a higher and. Higher profound now maybe
somebody will notice that because YOU Know nba scots are
keeping an eye on. This thing He Is, sean woods the,
unforgettable guard the COACH of la FOR mea, tbt entry
and the tournament's coming. Up fast we'll talk more basketball
on the other side of the break with the coach
on six POINT Thirty wlap. Welcome back we're Talking With.

(53:19):
Sean woods we talk with him each and, every week
the unforgettable guard who is the head coach OF a
TBT entry La for me and Also The Scott County High.
School cardinals and, you know by, the way speaking of Your,
beloved wildcats we've had a chance to talk to several
of the. NEW guys i don't know if you've been
able to see or hear any of, These, interviews sean
but you'll be delighted to know every one of, these

(53:42):
guys especially the guys we talked to, Most Recently, Cam Williams.
Jaden quainton's they can't stop talking, About defense so something
that was a problem early last year evidently is a
point of emphasis, this season at least in the. EARLY
going i don't know how you're going to get to
go to practice now with your, new JOB but i

(54:03):
know that they needed a dramatic turnaround, last year and
it sounds like they're getting an earlier start on defense.
This year that's going to make you.

Speaker 2 (54:11):
FEEL good i went over and. Watched practice did you
listen to, The? Sound dick.

Speaker 3 (54:21):
It was so refreshing to walk in there and the
walls of sweating guys are getting, after.

Speaker 1 (54:27):
It competing you're not just running up and down, shooting
threes playing for. Nets basketball these dudes was getting after
it and banging and playing and jumping out those screens
and getting.

Speaker 2 (54:39):
Over screens, you Know, Download.

Speaker 1 (54:43):
Malaca marino and the other guys having trained wrecks and.

Speaker 2 (54:46):
Going there, oh man it felt so good watching. THAT practice.

Speaker 3 (54:50):
I have you have no idea HOW happy. I WAS
and i just Looked At mark POPE and, i said
you're a. Smart guy you went.

Speaker 2 (54:58):
Through your first YEAR this. Scc gauntlet you thought that your.

Speaker 3 (55:02):
Offense is going to offset anything that. You do everybody,
can scout everybody. Stops offense the name of the game is.
Scoring basketball and if you can stop the other team
from scoring with your prolific, offensive system now we're cooking with.

Speaker 2 (55:17):
Some grease and you, know.

Speaker 3 (55:18):
What Our kentucky wildcats are Cooking with greece because they
went out and got some personnel that likes to, play
defense that comes from programs that were really. Good defensively
so now you got the mindset within. The kids now
you can, teach defense whether you're good, or not just
from some. Competition standpoint now you put your. Scouting in

(55:41):
now there's no beeline basket to. The rim there's no
looking at guys.

Speaker 2 (55:46):
Shooting threes There's not we're.

Speaker 3 (55:47):
Not getting out rebounded by.

Speaker 2 (55:50):
You know six and seven and. Eight deals.

Speaker 3 (55:55):
You know so from, that standpoint we've already got better from.

Speaker 2 (55:59):
Myst year we're gonna be A better we're gonna be
a better. SHOOTING team i. DON'T know i doubt it.

Speaker 3 (56:06):
Because we ain't Got no. Kobe brads we Ain't got but, guess,
what though we got some goons out there that's gonna.
Stop people we ain't got to out score one hundred
points to win. The game we can win games in the,
eighties now and, uh man you know it's gonna, be
fun it's gonna, be competitive and. WATCH out i think,
this team if we get hot and low becomes a

(56:30):
dominating point guard instead of just a. Point guard because
you saw last year In the, final four every team had,
a magnificent tough point guard that can go do.

Speaker 2 (56:42):
Anything that needs to be done to get.

Speaker 3 (56:43):
Their team there's the that's the question of this team
this year Is will low be a dominating point guard
like the kid that Was at florida or the other
guys that made it To the. Final four because every
team that's that's gonna be a top Team in america
and go ruff Of, the roses which is the, national
championship got to have a dominating. Point Guard so i'm

(57:06):
hoping and wishing That that low can be. That guy
and if, he is.

Speaker 2 (57:11):
LOOK out I love kententuch.

Speaker 4 (57:12):
His chams he was a really good point guard for
a poor or just a mediocre. Pit team and by,
the way we heard earlier on the Show From jaden
quainton's who will bring? The defense and he's not even out,
there yet still nursing. That knee so a couple of
minutes Left For. Sean woods let me keep it. On
defense and you've touched on this a little bit as
a high, school coach but how do you? SELL defense, i,

(57:36):
mean look if you're in a high, school team you
gotta do what the. Coach tells you. To do but
how do You get let's put it to you, This.
Way shan how do you get a high school kid
excited about playing defense.

Speaker 2 (57:48):
Telling him that he could? Do it you Know what.

Speaker 3 (57:49):
I'm saying it gives him an opportunity to get out
in transition when he gets.

Speaker 2 (57:52):
To stop we ain't got to.

Speaker 3 (57:54):
Run no plays and only one person the two people
going to be, you know featured in. The offense you
Know what. I'M saying, i mean now you get, a
stop you get, a rebound were. Pushing it that's the
best way to play is playing. In transition and in
order was to play, in transition you gotta. Get stops
so there's a reward and.

Speaker 2 (58:12):
A carrot for playing.

Speaker 3 (58:14):
Great defense and also the defensive side of the ball
is when it coaches. Most intent and if you want
to coach the stay off. Your behind you're gonna bust
your butt for. A defense, you know you're gonna be up,
The line you're gonna guard the ball as tough as.
You can you're gonna, block out. Be physical but, then
man once you get that ball and you get it
on the, other side and you getting layups and you

(58:35):
high five and you're posing your will on the. Other
team that's when competition gets. Becomes fun and That's.

Speaker 2 (58:41):
What That's how i've always, sold it you KNOW what.
I mean and. YOU don't i don't.

Speaker 3 (58:46):
Give in you know that that's one side of the
ball that there's there's no there's no giving in from a,
coaching STANDPOINT and I Think mark pope has done the
great job. OF that i think his assistance are really.
FIRED up, I mean i can just tell in the
in the camaraderie looking at. The assistance they're more juicy
now on that side of, the ball, you know BECAUSE

(59:08):
they i think they questioned, it too you Know what.

Speaker 2 (59:10):
I'm saying, You Know, jason hart you.

Speaker 3 (59:12):
Know he's been IN. The nba he knows, you know
you got you Got An alvin luson and who's.

Speaker 2 (59:17):
You know he Comes.

Speaker 3 (59:18):
From baylor they were known for being, tough defensive. You
know they they didn't know anything about this, fancy offense,
you know and they can care less. About that it's
about stopping people and it's nothing's more degrading than getting
your butt kicked on the glass or just getting or
getting b.

Speaker 2 (59:33):
Line basket, you Know b lion drou to.

Speaker 3 (59:35):
The basket so on and, so FORTH and i don't
think that's gonna happen, this year and, you know and
it's gonna be so. Refreshing now, you know last year
was posts first year he. Didn't know, you know you're
coming FROM. B yu all they do, is score you
Know what. I'm saying they ain't known for being no great,
defensive team.

Speaker 2 (59:52):
Never have. You know and as good as, they are.

Speaker 3 (59:54):
They're tough, you know it's tough to PLAY at byu
because of the altitude and as fast as, they play
but they never get out of the gate when it
comes to the tournament because when you get to, the
tournament it's about scouting, the defense and they always got
knocked out because Even Before. Mark pope So Now mark pope's,
in it he's got some guys that know how to.

Speaker 2 (01:00:13):
TEACH it I Think mark fox is helping him a little. Bit,
MORE yeah I.

Speaker 3 (01:00:17):
THINK mark I think mark is listening a little bit
more as far as the defensive end. Is Concerned, Look
out i'm just telling you, Right, now sec it's gonna
be you Come, to kentucky you might get your, nose
broke you might get concussion, here there and that's gonna
be a good thing and then they throwing those.

Speaker 2 (01:00:34):
Threes in your. Face too.

Speaker 3 (01:00:35):
Ooh WEE but i think we're gonna be more of,
a good big time transition team.

Speaker 4 (01:00:39):
Is Excited, sean woods the unforgettable guard who is the
head Coach At Scott county high and the head Coach
of LAMIA, from tbt which is coming up in a couple.
Of weeks coach will talk again. Next week thank you.

Speaker 2 (01:00:50):

Speaker 3 (01:01:38):

right On. That saturday so let's, you know we'll hit
it again.

Speaker 4 (01:01:44):
Next, week coach thank you.

Speaker 2 (01:01:45):
So, Much, okay dick talk To.

Speaker 4 (01:01:47):
You Soonboddy Western Bureau Chief Gary moore next on six
THIRTY W lap welcome back to the Big. Blon cider
joining us now Is Our Western Bureau Chief. Gary moore
he does it each and. Every week he's got a
lot on.

Speaker 2 (01:01:58):
His.

Speaker 6 (01:01:58):
Mind folks two guys in a, six fact we've got
six things to. Run through our first Sip. Here dick
the Ninety Fifth Major League Baseball midsummer Classic next Tuesday
In hot atlanta on, the fifteenth. Of course the day,
before that on, the Fourteenth The Home. Run derby, as
usual usual hand ringing over who's been snubbed, so far players,
drop out some of the snub, get in and somehow

(01:02:20):
the sun still comes up the. Next day talk about
your first. World problems but a, Cool thing dick is
going to Happen on monday for the Home run derby
Thanks to Hall OF. FAMER. C, c sabathia who's also
a special assistant to. The Commissioner the Derby's on july
fourteenth or, seven fourteen the game itself on seven. To
fifteen so For The American league, derby participants they're all

(01:02:41):
going To Wear babe ruth's number three in honor of
his seven hundred and fourteen. Home Runs The National league
derby hitters will wear a number forty four in Honor
of Atlanta's Own, henry, aaron who of course Their passed
ruth with home run number seven fifteen back in. Seventy four, sabathia,
said quote we'd be doing ourselves a disservice to not do.
The storytelling we have so many opportunities to, tell stories

(01:03:02):
and just with the date and, THE number i thought
it would be cool to tell this. One unquote did
he think right or what?

Speaker 2 (01:03:09):
On? This.

Speaker 4 (01:03:09):
Oh yeah that's the best part, About, it gary is
that it comes from not just a, former player but
a guy who has is basically, you know. A contemporary,
i mean he's his playing career didn't end that, long ago,
you know if it were an old time or quote
unquote like one, Of, us yeah but a guy who
played recently to come up with, THAT idea i think.

(01:03:32):
IS great i REMEMBER where. I was you probably. Do
Too when aaron broke, the record we were in the DORM,
at uk all grouped AROUND the tv. Watching it we
all know the famous Trivia Answer tom house caught the
ball in. The bullpen and here's another good one. For
you seven Fourteen Was joe friday's badge number. And dragnet,

(01:03:54):
that's true, That's true it's. IT'S great i. LOVE this
I Love.

Speaker 6 (01:03:58):
Al Downing al downing was, the picture but that's. Exactly
right WORKED For. KBC radio i talked to him. Many
times what a, great MAN and i really enjoyed seeing him.

Speaker 4 (01:04:05):
Out There milo hamilton was one of the guys. Who
called there were SEVERAL Radio tv MILO did uk basketball
one YEAR, on tv so he had a chance to call.
THAT moment a lot of Great stories.

Speaker 6 (01:04:18):
Milo And, ernie johnson just listening to THEM. On, wsb
yeah many second swig in the. Six pack now you're
talking About The Major League Baseball All. Star game i've
covered about a half dozen, of THEM and i don't
know if you have. A favorite i'll check on your
favorite here in just. A SECOND but i got a
couple of moments that really stand out. For me The
First Major League all STAR game i ever covered was
an eighty Nine. In anaheim plus they Had The old

(01:04:41):
timers game, before IT where i got to hang out with,
My Hero kurt flood Of. The cardinals one of the
greatest days of. My life AND then i met Up
With joe DiMaggio in the. Clubhouse tunnel the. Next DAY
while i was, out there Ran Into peewee Reese Watched
warren spahn Talk to don maddingly about how much he
appreciated him as as. A. Player NICE if i died the,

(01:05:01):
next day it would have been with a smile on.
My face and OF course i got to include the
two thousand and seven Game In san francisco where YOU
and i had live.

Speaker 4 (01:05:08):
Pregame speaks For The national.

Speaker 6 (01:05:10):
League DUGOUT then i took my, seat up way up
high in the, upper deck Which At san francisco is
a great seat because you've got a view Of. The
bay it's the, BEST view i think in all, of
BASEBALL but i think the favorite one growing up for
me watching on television in nineteen. Seventy one So Many
all Stars or Hall of famers in that game that
ended Up being hall.

Speaker 4 (01:05:27):
Of famers but You.

Speaker 6 (01:05:28):
Remember reggie jackson launched that home Run At tiger stadium
Nearly Made kurt goudi. Soil himself THAT'S still i love that.
That replay they keep showing it about this time. Of
year you got. A, favorite.

Speaker 4 (01:05:40):
Well that moment was great because, you know it hit the. Lights,
STANDARD yeah i think it was still going up when.
It did the legend is no telling how far that
ball would have gone with that if it didn't hit
that metal framework up there on the roof of. The
Stadium And kurt goudi from that, point on every time

(01:06:02):
he called a game And Involved, reggie jackson no matter
What team jackson was, playing for he mentioned that home
run by. Like clockwork, TO me i go back the
year PRIOR because i was Such A pete. Rose fan
it was the Year that riverfront Opened And pete rose
Bowls Over. Ray fosse the two had had dinner the.
Night before they, were friendly and It Ruined ray. Fossey's

(01:06:25):
CAREER but i, YOU know I Read charlie hustle several,
months ago, the biography, Great book, oh tremendous and a
chapter on that that play that you know takes you
really deep into. That play, You Know jim hickman delivered.
To hit, you know the third base Coach was leo
du Rocher amos otis made the throw from. Center, FIELD

(01:06:50):
yeah i remember that one like it was. Last night
thanks for the heads up on. That book by. The way, that,
yeah tremendous tremendous.

Speaker 6 (01:06:57):
Third swig and the. Six, pack okay let's look At
Another all. Star game four Days After baseball's it's THE
W Nba All Star game saturday, the nineteenth two hours
up from us Here, in louisville up by sixty Five.
In Indianapolis caitlin clark got over one point two, million votes,
a record and she will not only obviously start on her,
home court but she's one of The Two all. Star

(01:07:17):
captains she finished first in fan voting to know, when
surprise third in the media votes but what the hell do?
They know and ninth ninth in the. Player balloting?

Speaker 3 (01:07:28):
What?

Speaker 4 (01:07:28):
Gives well?

Speaker 6 (01:07:29):
You know, Over Here eric CRAWFORD of wdrb said it's no.
BIG deal a lot of famous players, breed resentment and
plus she's not had the greatest year. So, far yeah
she's only MADE the wnba. More popular that has ever
been no. BIG deal a couple. Of, points one, NO
gender i think you may agree with me, on this.
Be careful no gender does jelly like women, to jelly

(01:07:51):
based on not necessarily unscientific research of my. Female relationships,
and two the greatest thing to ever happen TO the
wnba happens to be white in a league where about
eighty percent.

Speaker 4 (01:08:02):
Are not.

Speaker 6 (01:08:04):
Would you say that jealousy and possible racism are fair?

Speaker 4 (01:08:08):
Game? HERE yeah i mean we've been talking about that
since she joined, the league AND yesterday i talked about
The Fact, christine brennan a, terrific journalist has written a
Book About caitlyn CLARK, the wnba and one of the
points she made through the book and through AN unnamed
wnba front, office person a, league person was the fact

(01:08:31):
and this is more relevant now Because Of, caitlyn clark
and there is more media coverage OF, The wnba and
of course a lot of players resented the fact they
weren't getting enough. Media attention well guess what now. They
are we've talked endlessly about the, rising tide Which Is,
caitlyn clark, you know lifting. All boats but this front

(01:08:51):
office Person Told, christine brennan our players are not equipped
to deal with media with. Tough questions they've never been
properly prepped. Like that they aren't in college because very
few of them get much media coverage. In college you, Do,
it tennessee you. Do it you can get a little
bit at a Place, like kentucky of. All places but

(01:09:14):
this Person Told, christine brennan we've got to do a
better job of prepping our players to deal with, the
media and when it Not Just, caitlin clark but all the.
Way around it's a.

Speaker 6 (01:09:25):
Great, point yeah it's a. Great point fourth swig in the.
Six Pack Major league baseball trading deadline coming up as
usual three weeks, From tomorrow july. Thirty first but here's
a trade YOU and i would love to see in.
College football. Dig This stuart Mandel Of the athletic got
this great email from a Guy NAMED.

Speaker 4 (01:09:42):
Andy J, In.

Speaker 6 (01:09:43):
Columbus ohio, he said what IF the acc And the
big twelve made. A trade Acc, Gets Cincinnati west VIRGINIA
And Ucf big twelve in Turn, Get stanford CAL. And
smu think. About it Stanford and cal Reunite, WITH, arizona Asu, Colle.
Rodo utah they're PROBABLY. Playing byu all great geographic kind.

(01:10:03):
Of games then YOU'VE got smu meeting up AGAIN with
Tcu and Baylor, In texas Tech. And houston You've got
Cincinnati And west virginia reuniting with Four Former big east Foes.
INCLUDING louisville ucf gets bus Rides to Tallahassee and miami
instead of ridiculous flights To still Water, and AIMS and
i guarantee you bigger crowds at all of those more

(01:10:24):
than likely makes. Perfect sense, in fact probably too, much
sense which which means it probably will, never happen, you
think or.

Speaker 4 (01:10:31):
Maybe that's a. Great idea it's a, great idea and
you took. My words it makes too, much sense. You
know now the question is will the money? Even out,
YOU know, tv deals things. Like that and that's that's
understandable because especially now where schools have to come up
with millions to, pay players the money has. To work

(01:10:53):
but if it did as, you said this would be
get more money because you don't have to book so many.
Plane rides that's. THE key i just wish there were
more common sense involved.

Speaker 6 (01:11:06):
Like this fitzwig And, six packs speaking of the athletic and,
college football one of their riders ranked the top one
hundred college. Football rivalries we have seen this the top five.
Pretty Solid Michigan ohio state at, number one but he
goes on to state it's the greatest rivalry at All of.
American sports not sure about, that one but that's for.

(01:11:26):
Another day Bama and auburn. Number, two hey trees have
been poisoned, For, this okay so that's right. Up there
Oklahoma and texas. Number Three army navy. Number four maybe
a greater Rivalry Than Michigan, ohio state do you think
of the history behind that? And everything then at, NUMBER
FIVE Usc A, notre DAME although i WOULD PUT usc
ucla here because no matter, the records the CROWDS in

(01:11:48):
la are always BIGGER for UCLA and usc THAN An
Sc notre, dame game AND for sc losing To the irish.
Is BAD but i can, promise you having BEEN in
la for thirty, five years use LOSING the ucla way
way Worse for trojan fans. BY Far uk louisville's way
down on, the list EVEN behind uk and that ugly

(01:12:08):
orange SCHOOL down i, seventy FIVE although i Would say
KENTUCKY and U of l even though having played as
long as the balls And. The cats, to me it's
bigger and meaner and. More, INTENSE oh i.

Speaker 4 (01:12:17):
Agree, with That because kentucky for the longest time did
not keep up its end Of the. Tennessee rivalry you
got to have wins on both sides to make it.
A rivalry i was pleased They put uku of l
on that list BECAUSE what i really appreciated about, This
list gary was the fact that it was not a
recency bias kind. Of pole too often it's, like lately,

(01:12:39):
you know which may BE Why Usc notre dame has
been rated. So HIGHLY but i give them major props
on that pole for going back, so far, you know
and looking at the history because that's what it's. All
about and a.

Speaker 6 (01:12:51):
Lot of small colleges are on there too. As well
Western and middle was. Even on There Was yale harvard.
ON there i don't, even remember, so, yeah. Yeah yeah
sixth and. Final swig congrats To Your. Lexington legends Sold
out legends Field. Last friday hope they do it again
a week from. Tomorrow night on, the seventeenth they Become
The Kentucky bourbon barrels against The Visiting Gastonia. GHOST peppers

(01:13:15):
i Love the bourbon barrels. Alter ego it's a, great
one so many again this summer in minor. League baseball,
in fact let me give you three that seemed to
show you how much fun minor league. Baseball is, last
Month The, ashville Tourists THE high a Affiliate, of houston became The,
snot otters a nickname a nickname For the eastern hell

(01:13:36):
bender salamander that Lives Around. Western carolina then you had
Up In, new Jersey The Hudson valley renegades Becoming, The
bennies benny's being a pejorative term used by year round
residents Of The jersey shore to, describe rude loud Tourists
From north Jersey And. New york and then Finally The
rocket city trash Pandas the ANGELS double a affiliate will

(01:13:59):
Become The, bama Butts saluting alabama's, pork barbecue complete with
a cartoon pig showing his. POSTERIOR dick i think The Paraphrase,
jim harbaugh who's got it more fun than minor league?
BASEBALL nobody i.

Speaker 4 (01:14:14):
Think that Explanation of benny's puts the Rest Why john
calipari called people Here. Basketball benny's that maybe the ingredient
we've been missing. All along He Is. Gary moore he
Is our western. Burea chief will come back with a
couple of hot reads in a minute here on a
big bloon sider six Thirty wlap welcome back To the Big,
bloon sider a couple of hot reads For Our western,

(01:14:35):
Bureau Chief. Gary. Moore gary it's looking like once the
rules or laws or whatever, are overcome you may see
advertisements on football jerseys at the, college level STARTING. With
lsu they're making a move and again money is getting tighter.
And tighter there's legislation, against it but there's also a

(01:14:57):
legislation in motion to make. It happen you know we're gonna,
see it and once, we do you think we'll see.
It everywhere it's gonna.

Speaker 6 (01:15:05):
Be everywhere there is a tip of. The iceberg fields
are gonna. Be renamed you're gonna have them, On helmet
you're gonna have them on. Uniform jerseys. You, LOOK look
uk has just said no more freebies in. The tickets
you've talked. ABOUT that i BELIEVE already usc just laid
off about six or eight people in the sporting in
the athletic department, as well cuts like that, are coming
and they got to find the money, from somewhere and

(01:15:26):
there's gonna be all sorts, of things. Naming rights they'll
probably put commercials or ads on the kicking t's everything.

Speaker 4 (01:15:37):
Is game there WAS a qr code on the helmet
Of either Oklahom Or oklahoma state that people could, you know.
Latch onto but according to one of the people who
in favor OF this, lsu who it's not gonna LOOK. Like,
nascar yeah maybe not. AT first i, have tried, you
know give. A Time at big Twelve, Media Day scott

(01:16:00):
frost took his turn as the once and future. Head coach.
He's back let's put it to you this Way At.
Central florida that's the team he led to an undefeated
record two. Years after he took over A winless. Ucf
team then Went, to nebraska his, alma mater and it did.
Not work he lost two out of three. GAMES there i.

(01:16:20):
Got fired he is the guy Who quarterback nebraska to
its last National title gerry in nineteen. Ninety. Seven wow
but when he was asked what, he learned, he said
don't take the. Wrong job, Oh, please well you KNOW
what i know that you scoffed, At THAT but i
give the guy credit because he LATER said i didn't

(01:16:41):
want the JOB and i shouldn't have. Taken it maybe
more coaches will take. A. Queue right he tried to
go back to the alma mater and fix it and it.
Didn't work.

Speaker 6 (01:16:51):
