Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Big Blue Insider.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
Dick Gabriel with you on a Friday edition of our show,
Hope you enjoyed the best of the Big Blue Insider.
We were off for a few days and then of
course had the segments yesterday from SEC Media Days.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
We'll talk a little more.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Football tonight with Jeff Picarel of the UK Sports Network
in WTVQ covered the SEC Media Day's event in Atlanta,
at least covered the UK portion of the event. And
coming up tonight we will preview tonight's basketball action with
tbt's La Familla in actions kicking thing or tipping things off,
(00:32):
I should say in Memorial Coliseum tonight. But later on
in the show, it's a special edition because earlier today
Tom Leach on the Leech Repoard presented a pre recorded
show he did with Yours truly and Darren Hedrick, and
he presented these classic sports radio calls from GOSH going
back to the fifties, and we had a lot of
(00:53):
fun with it, but we ran out of time before
we could use most of the calls, and I told
Thomas to look, I'm gonna pull part of your show
and run it on mine tonight. But then I'm going
to use the calls we didn't get to, so we're
gonna present Leech Report overtime that comes up in hour
number two. Really begins later in this hour with excerpts
(01:14):
from Tom's show and then the calls that we couldn't
get to on his show, we'll present tonight on the
Big Boon Sider. So if you like the TV and
radio calls from great moments.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
In sports, this is the show for you.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
So was Tom's show earlier tonight, earlier this morning, i
should say, And you can pull that up online if
you missed it earlier via the iHeartRadio via the Apple podcasts.
But it was so much fun and a really great show.
I thought it was fun to be a part of it.
And again we'll have more on that tonight. But yeah,
tonight they tip off the tournament. The basketball tournament winner
(01:47):
take off for a million bucks. The team that involves
primarily UK players La Famia we'll be hosting tonight at
Memorial Coliseum. The team coached by Sean Woods. You hear
him every week on our show as a regular guest.
Had a chance to chat with him about coaching these guys.
These guys are for the most part pros. There's a
lot of talent on this roster.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
Well, I wish I was in college coaching this type
of talent. I wish I could have got to a
power of five, Dick and got some of these players. Man,
ain't no way. I can't get to a fight or
four in this type of situation.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
Woo wee. But they already know what they're doing, don't they.
Speaker 5 (02:20):
They already do. Man.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
The good thing is, you know, like I said before,
I can't brag on him anymore, but twenty did a
great job of just as similing these guys, the right
guys for this type of situation, and everybody's fired up
and ready to go.
Speaker 6 (02:33):
Man.
Speaker 4 (02:33):
I've talked to so many of them and I mentioned defense.
You know what, they all say, what's that? Defense wins championship,
no doubt about it.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
And they know that's what we all And guess what,
that's what we did last year and we were holding
teams under almost sixty five points a game. So we're
even We're more athletic and more defensive minded from an
individual standpoint with this team than we were last year.
And not only that, we're deeper, so hopefully we can
have a you know, we still had a chance to
win it last year. Unfortunately that Nesustein had to leave us.
(03:00):
But hopefully we can we can offset that this year.
Speaker 4 (03:03):
When you don't have to preach defense. How great an
advantage is that.
Speaker 5 (03:07):
Man?
Speaker 3 (03:08):
It gets everybody fired up because our offense is predicated
off the defense, and that's what get the fans going
and so on and so forth. So it's super contagious.
The energy is off the chain, and I just can't
wait to get going with these dudes.
Speaker 4 (03:21):
I don't want to leave you with this.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
I'm looking out there and DeAndre Liggings is surrounded my
media people, and that's a guy who, like he said, that's.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
My calling card defense.
Speaker 4 (03:30):
I mean, that's a huge plus for this team.
Speaker 7 (03:32):
Man.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
Tell you what, DeAndre Liggins is a guy that every
team wants and every coach.
Speaker 5 (03:36):
Wants to coach.
Speaker 4 (03:37):
Looks good.
Speaker 5 (03:38):
Yes, he does the.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
Shoulders, yes, sir, all these guys look good even Aren't
you a good one?
Speaker 5 (03:43):
You know what I mean? So shoot, I remember.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
That one year I brought more head in here and
we had them beaten. Archie good One went to work
on me, you know, got to the fireline about fifteen
straight times.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
But I'm glad I get to coaching now.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
One of the players Sean Woods will be coaching is
Willie Cauley's nine, who is the reigning Defensive Player of
the Year from last year's tournament, and we had a
chance to talk to him about what it's going to
be like. First of all, playing the game tonight and
assuming they win the first couple of games in Memorial Coliseum,
rupp Arena not available, so it's going to be packed
(04:17):
in historic Memorial Coliseum.
Speaker 8 (04:19):
I mean, I think it'll be a lot like how
we played in Freedom All last year, like a little
smaller intimate, but you know, louder, more people, more bodies.
Speaker 5 (04:27):
So I'm excited to play there. It's gonna be from.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
Greeny Defensive player of the Year for TVT.
Speaker 4 (04:32):
What else is there you can looking at to get
MVP this summer round?
Speaker 8 (04:35):
I mean, if it happens, you know, I didn't really
look to do that last year. I was just playing
in front of these fans, man, and they'll bring you out,
you know, to bring it out of you. So yeah,
I'm just here, like I get to play with a
couple guys that hadn't got to you know, bounce the
ball with in a while.
Speaker 5 (04:51):
So you know, Archie I had d Legs.
Speaker 8 (04:55):
When I was a rookie and the Kings, so I
got to play with him. I haven't got to play
with the Ron, so you know, might have to just
be able to go to war with them, you.
Speaker 5 (05:02):
Know where kind of Kentucky on the front.
Speaker 9 (05:04):
So I know it's the first day of practice, But
any similarities, any differences from maybe last year's team that
you can probably can you say?
Speaker 10 (05:12):
Uh?
Speaker 8 (05:13):
I mean, I think our core is kind of the same.
You got Me, got the Twins, you got Ring and
then you know, we added like some some big time
players like Leggings and shit, Khalil, Like that's a big
pickup for us.
Speaker 5 (05:27):
Bron obviously is a big pick up for us.
Speaker 8 (05:29):
We gotta have that shooter and a couple of the
younger guys that are just you know, gonna be able
to get active.
Speaker 5 (05:35):
Just off of being able to get active. We're all
old competter them.
Speaker 8 (05:40):
So having them guys been able to like go out
there and just play hard and you know, do what
they do. I don't think for us, like there's no
one person that's gonna be able to get off like
I think everybody's gonna have to do their thing for
us to have a chance. So I like our I
like our chance, and I like how were stacked.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
Up as good as y'all's defense will last year is
going to be another point of memphasis this year.
Speaker 4 (06:02):
How big is that in a tournament like this where
it's not fun to play defense?
Speaker 8 (06:06):
Yeah, I mean, I don't think it's fun to play
defense anytime, especially in a tournament like this, but if
you do, you'll probably win. Everybody knows defense wins. Is
if we do decide to pull together and play like
a defensive team, the offense is going to take care
of itself. We got way too much talent, so it
really is locking in on the defensive end and rebounding.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
That's Willie caley Stein, who actually hit a couple three
pointers in a big game last year for La Familia.
One of the guys who didn't play for the Kentucky
team last year but now work things out and he
is on this year scene. I think he's going to
be a key. Is the guy I talked to Sean
Woods about. That's DeAndre Liggins, who of course helped the
Wildcats get to the Final four back in twenty eleven,
(06:50):
had a huge three pointer in that win over North Carolina.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
Had a chance to chat with him. I mean, looks great.
Speaker 9 (06:57):
I'm telling you, excited and very excited to be back
the old faces again.
Speaker 5 (07:01):
It's a great deal.
Speaker 4 (07:02):
You know you're an old face too, even though you're
sure a young guy.
Speaker 9 (07:05):
Yeah, well I'm not. I'm thirty seven, but I feel young.
That's a good thing.
Speaker 4 (07:10):
Tell anybody once you've been up to I still been playing.
Speaker 9 (07:13):
Like overseas, so I'm still active.
Speaker 10 (07:16):
Man.
Speaker 9 (07:17):
That's about it. Saudi Arabia, what's that like? It's a
great experience. It's different than the States, being at home,
but it's a great deal.
Speaker 4 (07:29):
She in another part of the world. Is that something
you'd always wanted to do.
Speaker 9 (07:33):
I prefer to be in the States, but I gotta
do what I gotta do for my family, So I
got to adjust to it, and I think I did
a great job of that.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
Yeah, well, tell me about the opportunity to play with
this team.
Speaker 4 (07:44):
How excited is it? Are you about that?
Speaker 9 (07:46):
Very exciting to see faces on the players I played with,
to see old mark cribs and such like. It's just
it's just bigger than the TVT tournament. To come back
to be around the old guys that you grew up
with playing with, that's that's a great deal.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
What do you know about the way the fans turned
out last year, because it was pretty cool the way
that the community embraces team.
Speaker 9 (08:10):
It was big support last year. It was a great deal.
For the first year, it was great the fans supported.
It was a big crowd. We're looking forward to this
year look even better.
Speaker 4 (08:20):
What do you think of this team?
Speaker 5 (08:21):
As roster were good?
Speaker 9 (08:22):
I think we got good, we got size, we got
guard play. I think we got a good overall team
last year.
Speaker 2 (08:30):
This team is really good defensively, And Sean said, that's
gonna be a focal point again this year.
Speaker 4 (08:35):
And that's that's right up your alley, isn't it.
Speaker 9 (08:37):
That's that's my calling car and it will always be
my calling card. So I'm looking forward to playing great defense.
We got Willie Collin starting to protect block shots. You
got me guarding the guards. I'm the perimeter.
Speaker 5 (08:50):
We're gonna be a defensive team. That's how we're gonna win.
Speaker 4 (08:53):
But you guys can score.
Speaker 5 (08:54):
Yeah, we can score. That's whats gonna make us even better.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
You had one of the biggest shots in UK history
and NAY Tournament. Do you ever think about that moment much?
Because I see it on YouTube all the time.
Speaker 9 (09:04):
I see it too, and then every time I see it,
like chills run through my body, like I just got
this feeling like oh wow, Like I feel like I'm
still in that moment when I see it, you know.
Speaker 5 (09:15):
So that's a great feeling.
Speaker 11 (09:17):
You know.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
What do you remember about that moment?
Speaker 9 (09:19):
I just know the play broke down and the spacing
was kind of bad, so I kind of just Varius
Miller's drove in the paint and I kind of like
floated out to the three in the corner right that
he kicked it out and I made it to put
us up for it, and I kind of opened the
game up a little bit.
Speaker 4 (09:36):
And I remember that shot because you never hesitated.
Speaker 9 (09:40):
I mean, it was a flow to shoot it. Yeah,
it was a flow too. I knew I was shooting it.
I think the time was running out a little bit.
Coach Kyle called the play, but everybody didn't get into
the play, so I just had.
Speaker 5 (09:51):
To shoot it.
Speaker 4 (09:51):
You carry a lot of that tradition with you. What's
that like? No matter where you go around the world great.
Speaker 5 (09:57):
I would always bleed blue and white.
Speaker 9 (10:00):
I might have won, met too many memories, too many
loving people. It's just it's great to be back here.
I mean, I will always carry it. Noma won.
Speaker 1 (10:08):
That is DeAndre Liggins.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
You had that three point shot, you had the Josh Harrelson,
a huge game against Ohio State that year. That was
just kind of a surprise team when it came to
the final four. But Team Kentucky fans fell in love with,
and I think they'll love tonight's TBT team as well.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
Starts at nine o'clock. It's on FS one. JEFFIICORL talks
football next on six thirty WLAP Welcome back to the
Big Moon.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Sider joining us now. He and I spent a little
bit of time together the last couple of days driving
down to Atlanta and then covering SEC media days Jeff
piicor from the UK Sports Network and WTBQ. Going in,
Jeff two and we You and I talked so much
football on the way down and about the immediate future.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
But going in, I really.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
Wondered about Mark Stoops, his message, the tone of his comments,
the tone of the questions going in him, You and
I weren't in the writer's room, of course, but we
had a chance to do you know, a group group
with him in a breakout room, and then we were
there in the electronics room. But he didn't sound like
(11:12):
a guy on the hot seat, you.
Speaker 1 (11:14):
Know what I mean.
Speaker 2 (11:14):
And he may have gotten some of those questions in
the writer's room, but it wasn't exactly what I expected.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
What about you.
Speaker 12 (11:23):
No, it didn't sound like a guy who was frustrated
or you know, at the end of his line or
whatever you want to call a dead man walking anything
like that. Now he was I thought he was.
Speaker 13 (11:36):
Sincere.
Speaker 12 (11:36):
It sounded like he was you know, he knows he
has to win. I think, you know, obviously, but he says, hey,
you know, I've done something that nobody else has ever done.
I've had one losing season since the run started. Yeah,
you know, and that's I think that's what people have
to remember. Last year was abysmal. It was, but you
(11:57):
asked the question. For two weeks in a row, they
played with the best teams in America. They beat Old
miss and should have beat Georgia, you know, lost by
a point, and you know, things fell off after that.
But you know, he says, that's the type of team
we could be. He's got He went out of the
portal and rebuilt this team to what he likes, a big, strong,
(12:19):
physical football team.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
Yeah, and I really was interested too about his answer
about the defense because for so long, when when you
and me and Tom and anybody who talked about Kentucky
football at this time of the year, during the talking season,
we knew the defensive front, which which had some guys
come and go, but it just seemed like they lose somebody,
plug somebody back in. The linebackers were solid. They might
(12:44):
have lost some good guys, but you know, Eric Jackson
steps in has a great time. There weren't any questions
about the front four or even the front seven. Now
it's the other way around with the d backs being experienced,
solid deep question marks front. But his answer about that
was as much about depth now, and he made me
(13:06):
think about they've got a lot of bodies now, don't they.
Speaker 10 (13:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (13:09):
Yeah, And you got to remember a guy that I
thought was going to be a really, really good player.
Unfortunately he's had some injuries, Josiah Hayes. You know, he's
a guy people forget it. He's back, He's over three hundred.
Everybody that was there, Alex Safari, Jeorge love It, coach
all talked about also the transfers they had, you know,
(13:33):
the kid from They're just Gusta. He did what thirty
seven reps at two twenty five.
Speaker 1 (13:41):
Unbelievable kid from Washington State.
Speaker 12 (13:43):
Yeah, Washington State. Just a big monster inside. He reminds
me a little bit of a kid that the Jets
drafted in the first round about ten years ago. Remember
was it Robinson I think was the name. Yeah, yeah,
but you know he was a first round picking the
New York Jets. And this guy's a bigger version of that.
He's a whole you know, he's just a stopper up
(14:07):
front that you can't move. And they got they got
some depth. They went out in Wyoming, USC. They've got
some quality guys to come in to plug holes. And
they got a little bigger and a little faster, a
little stronger, And Alex Safari talked about, hey, I'm up
to two hundred and thirty pounds. That's a good size.
And linebackers have changed now because of the way, you know,
(14:28):
there's no more Jim Kovacchis, you know anymore of those
guys that simply played in the middle and played from
tackle to tackle. Now you have to play sideline. The sideline. Yeah,
he's a little Yeah, they're a little smaller at linebacker,
but two thirty still brings the wallop, you know, and
they can cover guys. And that's the key.
Speaker 2 (14:46):
I want to come back to David Gusta and the
reason is, and it's not like you know, Jeff and
I are anybody's really seen him do a lot in
person that but you mentioned a weightlifting and as we
were coming home you talk.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
What did you say?
Speaker 2 (15:00):
You were able to do four reps that weight and
he's thirty seven, he's six three three seventeen. Is from
San Bernardino, California. Side note, fun fact, San Bernardino's where
they filmed mashed the TV show.
Speaker 1 (15:15):
Because that part I drove through to that part of
the world.
Speaker 2 (15:18):
Looks apparently a lot like South Korea anyway, release they
can make it look that way on TV. But I
bring that up because not just the weightlifting. All three
of the players who mentioned guys, people will say, oh,
who should we know about Joshkatis a tight end, that's
a guy on defense. He mentioned it, and of course
the other guys on defense. All three of them mentioned
(15:42):
and to me, Jeff, that reminds me. And of course
I didn't live that life.
Speaker 5 (15:45):
You did.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
Of the impression that a new person can make, or
a teammate current teammate can make in the weight room.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
You guys live in the weight room, You practice, you play,
but most of your life, it seemed, as a player,
more of your life was in the weight room. Explained
everybody about the camaraderie, the esprit de corps. You see
the clips now on social media. We didn't see him
back when you were playing, but guys surrounding.
Speaker 1 (16:10):
I saw a clip the other day. I don't know
what it's called, but it's when you put the bar
on your shoulder and you squat. I guess I just
called squat.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
You know, players surrounded by screaming teammates and they celebrate
after like three or four reps.
Speaker 1 (16:26):
What's up with that? There's a modern question for you.
Speaker 12 (16:30):
Yeah, well what the coach Kursey started this and coach
Flavor did it as well. But they broke you down
into teams, and it wasn't just like receivers and dbs
and linebackers. It was they were different groups. Group ron
grew two through three, Group four, and that was the
times that you went into the weight room. Group one
was maybe the morning time schedule. Group two was a
(16:51):
lunchtime yeah, and it was done around your schedule stuff.
So you got to be really tight with those guys
because Pat Etcherberry was a fiend in the in the
weight room as our as the weight coach, and so
these teams that you had, and it was a real
bonding experience because you're with those guys all the time
(17:12):
and then once you break down into your regular groups
when practice starts, to your receivers and stuff that that's
a different team, but you hold a real bond to
those guys because those are the guys that you're getting bigger, stronger,
and faster with and for. And it was always fun
because then at the end when you do your testing
at the end of summer, right before we start practice,
you have to do a test, and those are the
(17:34):
guys that you test with, and those are the guys
that are helping you on I mean, we had to
do a run with Kersey and I remember guys running
out to help guys across the line to beat you know,
the time you had to do a certain run and
it had to be in a certain time. The guys
would run out and you'd see you know, Schroeder and
McClellan out there basically carrying a guy across the line
(17:55):
in time. So that that was cool, and that was
a you know, it's a real comrade, you see that
like the Marines and things like that. It's just a
bonding thing. And the weight room is is really where
you bond.
Speaker 1 (18:06):
So it was like basic training.
Speaker 12 (18:08):
And then sure, yeah, basically yeah, yeah, they had no car.
Kalanowski took all your car keys. They locked him down
at the track and uh, it was just three of
a practices and and we were the only people on
campus for three weeks. We had three weeks to two
of days and and we actually had a third practice
at night that was a kicking and special teams practice,
(18:28):
but everybody had to go. So he had three practices.
Speaker 2 (18:31):
People need to understand too, that Etcheberry was I don't
know about ahead of his time, but he was hired
away by the IMG Academy. You know, when they created
that that facility down there, they wanted to create athletes.
Speaker 12 (18:44):
And he was yeah, and he was an Olympic medalist.
Speaker 1 (18:48):
Yes, and what the shot put.
Speaker 12 (18:50):
It was, yeah, one of the throws, one of the
one of.
Speaker 1 (18:53):
The field events.
Speaker 2 (18:54):
But yeah, when they when they opened the img A camp,
they wanted a guy who knew well he knew and
they hire him away. And then Jerry Clayburn, you know,
for whatever you think of him, like him or not,
he was a cutting edge guy at Maryland when it
came to the weight room. And Randy White, one of
the greatest d linemen of all Daheim credited Jerry Clayburn
(19:15):
for taking him from the you know, the ninety eight
pound weekling the Classic into a monster in the weight room.
So yeah, that's that's vital. And when people start talking
about and everybody talks about the kid.
Speaker 1 (19:27):
From Washington State, that means you're going to want to
pay attention.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
We're talking to Jeff picarel of the UK Sports Network
in WDTVQ about SEC Media Days. Back in a minute
six thirty WLAP Welcome back. We're talking with Jeff Picarol
from w TVQ. You may have seen some of his
reports from Atlanta. The SEC Media Days just concluded. UK
was one of the last teams to go through and
(19:51):
it was it was interesting hearing the players Jeff talk
about the honor this has become a thing. Back in
the day, I can remember players who kind of went,
I got to go to this now because I think
as much as anything, it's about brand building as well
as being seen in your finest threads.
Speaker 1 (20:10):
But they were all so appreciative, weren't they.
Speaker 12 (20:12):
Well, the really cool thing listening to players were it
was something that they were hoping to get, something they
hoped to receive, and it was such an honor to them.
All three of them spoke about, you know, it was
so special to them to be chosen by coach to
come and represent their team. And I thought it was cool.
All of them went over to Mac and Clay and
(20:33):
they all got new suits and shoes and everything, and
they and all of us said, you know, shout out
to the Mad Clay and that kind of stuff. And it's
really cool because this is something I don't know, Dick,
I guess it's a phenomena. What do they call them
a fifth or is that what they call it or
whatever they're Yeah, and these guys all and and it's
everything now and you know, guys used to go to
(20:54):
games and sweatpants and stuff and now you see and
I don't know if it was the kid from Alburn,
Cam Newton that started this or not, but you know,
he would dress to the Nines for every game, and
especially when he got to the NFL, and then everybody
started doing it. Now they have cameras waiting in the
parking lot when the guys get out of the car
or off the bus. And this is in football, it's
(21:15):
in basketball. You see it now with the w NBA
and the NBA. It's crazy. But these guys are out
wearing thousands, you know, thousand dollars suits and it's actually
pretty cool. Now.
Speaker 1 (21:27):
Yeah, they all look great.
Speaker 2 (21:29):
I thought Alexafari killed it though, because he went solid
black suit and shirt but pocket square and tie were
kind of an electric blue teal. Looked just just sensational,
wasn't it.
Speaker 12 (21:45):
Yeah, I think it was really cool. Those guys have
a blast tune. I even coach Tups had sweep suit on,
some nice shoes, you know.
Speaker 2 (21:53):
So it reminded me I was privileged to hosts the
Cats well when that Cat a couple of times, and
and I was told that by the time I did it,
it had really become a thing. And you know, they
all kind of chuckled about, well, you know, the girls
worry about what they're wearing.
Speaker 1 (22:11):
They stress about it for months.
Speaker 2 (22:13):
To the Cats bees, I found out the guys did
as much as the women.
Speaker 1 (22:18):
You know, they all were what am I wearing?
Speaker 2 (22:20):
Because they they finally said to me, it's like prom
It's like PROMP for the athletics department. So to a
lesser degree, it is so anyway back to what they
were talking about though.
Speaker 1 (22:30):
And you know, there were questions of course about quarterback
to Mark Stoops and other things. Nothing really new came out.
Speaker 2 (22:37):
But I think it was more about, you know, the
tone and what Kentucky fans, what SEC fans can expect
to hear and see from the Wildcats this year. And
that's basically a stop pointed out, almost like a makeover,
wasn't it.
Speaker 12 (22:51):
Yeah. I think that there's less He's trying to put
less emphasis on the quarterback by building up what he
used to have when John Schlarman was here, and that's
this big blue wall. They went out and got six
players to fill those holes in the transfer portal. I
think the to me, the biggest gets Joshua Broad. I mean,
(23:13):
here's a guy that was the second team All SEC
offensive lineman last year at Arkansas. That's the team that
really runs the football well. Sam does a great job there.
He's a lot like uh coach Stoops is.
Speaker 14 (23:26):
Uh.
Speaker 12 (23:26):
He's a run first, defense kind of guy. And Braun
is just one of those tough you know, you call
him old school type of players. They just like to
get down and dirty. And he's a monster of a guy.
He's gonna he's gonna be your guard. You know, he's
gonna be the right guard or left guard. I'm not
sure which side he's gonna play as yet, but uh,
and then you get you know, Wolf Schlager is another
(23:47):
guy that was an All Conference player. And then of
course Pete, whose wing span is about the same as
Sam Bouie. I mean, the guy could I'm here, he
can for a volleyball Nett and open the refrigerator door,
you know, I mean it's gonna be yes, But they
just got to have size up front. Then he went
(24:09):
out and got two really good running backs. He got
the kid down All from Nebraska and then Etherton from
New Mexico State, and they were and another guy that
all all three of the guys talked about as well,
as well as coach was the late gain of Seth.
This kid is a six foot nine pound running back,
so I think Derrick Henry, you know, that's the sizest guys.
(24:31):
He's just a monster and a beast in the weight room.
So they're very excited about him back there. So I
think you're going to see this team that's going to
be a run first team, and the says, you've got
a quarterback that's got a really good arm that doesn't
have to force things, and I think that's going to
be the key. Take what the defense gives you at
the quarterback spot. With Calzada or Cutter Cutter, Saw has
(24:53):
a chance. But I think that the reason they brought
in Zach was was he's got thirty two starts, including
ten in the secs. So he's a guy with experienced
and he beat Alabama at Texas A and m sure
in a shootout. It wasn't it wasn't a seventeen to
ten game. It was a shootout that that he won,
so they see that that the potential's there. He took
two years an increnet word and polished himself and the
(25:16):
ball gets out of his hands really quick. Again to me,
The biggest thing he has to do is not try
to force thing. He doesn't have to be Brett Farve. Well,
he thinks he can throw it to an eye of
a needle at fifty yards with two defenders on the guy.
That's not what you're looking for. You looking for a
guy that can manage the game, get you down the field,
and that's what he can do.
Speaker 2 (25:33):
A few minutes left with Jeff Picorro of the UK
Network and WTVQ.
Speaker 1 (25:37):
You mentioned Seth McGowan.
Speaker 2 (25:39):
He was late through the portal, but interestingly, like you said,
everybody brought him up, you know. And and he goes
into a running backs room that already was. It's got
some talent, but nobody really has distinguished and sod. But
then again, no one's really had the opportunity to distinguish himself.
But here's a kid who started off like Pete at
(25:59):
New Mexico State, then when Juco then went Oklahoma. He
is from Mesquite, Texas, which is a suburb of Dallas,
basically best known for the Mesquite Rodeo, but also known
I'm serious there it's a big deal down there, but
also for really great high school football. So that guy,
to me, is intriguing. And I think that the you know,
we've we've talked a lot about the old line, about
(26:22):
the wide receiver room. I think that running backs room
now has become really interesting.
Speaker 12 (26:27):
Yeah, I really have. And I said Ethertson, that's a
baseball player that shows you that what happens when you
do twenty six years of that. But yeah, McGowan is
I think that once you look at this room now,
you get two really big, powerful backs that are you know,
the goal line type, you know, that could just pound
it between the tackles. And then you've got a couple
(26:48):
of guys that on any time they touched the football
could break the big one. We saw it against Tennessee
last year. Right, Yeah, these will Cox and Patterson, they've
got that ability to really turn it on. So they've
got some choices back there. And look, this has been
a team that's been thin at different positions and they're
(27:10):
not going to get caught in in the backfield. This year.
You've got Mizelle coming back. He's now two years removed
from his knee surgery. He's one hundred percent now, so
it's going to be interesting to see him. Another bruising
style of back so they really have five guys back there,
and it's going to be a fun competition. You know,
there's only one ball who carries the load. It's going
to be fun to see.
Speaker 2 (27:30):
Before I let you go, you mentioned your experienced Major
League Baseball with the Reds Network. What did you think
of the All Star Game and how it concluded?
Speaker 12 (27:41):
That fantastic thought it was outstanding. You know, I had
a nice talk with the owner of the Legends before
the season started, and he talked about wanting to do
something just like we saw in the All Star Game
because he's an independent team and so they don't have
to abide by Major League Baseball rules of those type
of things. All he has to do if they play
(28:01):
a team that's affiliated, he had they just tell them
before the game, hey, look, this is what we want
to do, and if they agree, then you can do that.
Because you know, this pitching is a premium, and especially
in minor league baseball. You used to do minor league games.
You get through maybe that first pitcher that goes four
or five innings, and then it's you.
Speaker 1 (28:19):
Know, it's one.
Speaker 12 (28:21):
Right after another, you know, and just get the ball.
You're just praying, get the ball over a plate, please,
But I thought it was fantastic And look at the
fans went crazy. The teams went crazy when Schwarber hit
those three home runs. It was you saw the elation
of the National League team in the American League teams
that they're going, you got to be kidding me, you know, awesome.
Speaker 2 (28:43):
I thought one of the greatest endorsements among the players
and their excitement was the starting pitcher was a school
ball from Detroit. Yeah, and a lot of these guys
people don't know. And it's not a measure of disrespect,
but if their time and the game is over and
they have a plane to catch or something that they
believe he was in street closed and came out of
(29:05):
the clubhouse to watch. And then they did away with
that stupid rule they had where the All Star Game
decided World Series home field advantage. So I thought that
was a perfect way to end it. It kept people
and you know what I would imagine, Jeff, that an
overwhelming majority of the viewers didn't know that rule was
in place, and the broadcasters had to remind themselves, Oh, yeah,
(29:29):
that's right, if it's a.
Speaker 4 (29:30):
Tie, go ahead.
Speaker 12 (29:32):
We've talked about this on our little chain with with
coach and Darren Hendrick and coach Madison and Doug Flint
about you know, as a pitcher and you let's say
you're sewing a no hitter and it's zero zero in
the ninth inning and you got to start the tenth
and he was a guy on second base. That that's
not fair to Nolan Ryan or you know anybody, And
(29:55):
that's to me. You're changing the game doing that here
a way that you know what it's Look, they do
it in hockey, they do it in soccer. It's a
great way to and now they've basically done it in
football when you get you know, when you go to overtime,
you get you used to get the ball, what it
was it the twenty five yard line or whatever. So
you're alleviating three quarters of the field already.
Speaker 2 (30:17):
But then you go to the two point conversion rule
after a couple of niks from now you go to
two Yeah, then you go to two point conversions.
Speaker 12 (30:22):
So why not do it because again, pitching is it
such a premium even at the major league level that
I think it's just a fantastic way to do it well.
Speaker 2 (30:30):
The managers also, now the game is no longer played
the way it used to be, where you might see
somebody stay in the game for nine innings.
Speaker 1 (30:37):
Managers rotate every to get them all in.
Speaker 2 (30:40):
And I don't mind that so much, but yeah, that's
why you never want to see another tie. And uh
and John Smoltz doing the broadcast, you heard him very
quiet of it, very very quietly said I was part
of a tie.
Speaker 1 (30:52):
It wasn't good, you know, So yeah, I agree with you.
Here's Jeff Piicorra.
Speaker 2 (30:55):
Watch for him on channel thirty six WTVQ and of
course listen to him on the UK radio network. It's
coming up fast. Well, I'll be learning this new team together,
but it's gonna be fun.
Speaker 12 (31:06):
Thank you, sir, Hi buddy, have a go.
Speaker 2 (31:08):
One Up next, an excerpt of this morning's Leach Report,
when Tom, Darren Hedrick and I in a pre recorded
show went through some great radio clips and then we
have the clips that did not make it on the
air on the Leach Report, will air tonight on the
Big Bloom Sider and what we decided to call the
Leach Report Overtime that's ahead on six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 13 (31:30):
First one is Kayoo Ledford, he and Ralph Hacker on
the call in Saint Louis in nineteen seventy eight when
Kentucky won its first national championship in twenty years, beating
Duke ninety four to eighty eight.
Speaker 10 (31:42):
Tucky leading Kim Fucking Cleft back to lathe Pack to
Raby Goby down to James Lee play driving, let it
goes under done.
Speaker 7 (31:51):
Hey body eight and Aaron's the last time good hook
you in it lighty after twenty Aucky wild Cat when
they es Tiny Perdy cover the new footouts and Gamesley.
Speaker 13 (32:07):
They were starting the music to head to the break
already at that point. And then the next clip is
from nineteen fifty eight. This was Claude Sullivan on the call.
The game was at Freedom Hall, Kentucky beat Seattle to
win its fourth national championship.
Speaker 15 (32:22):
Right off up, Kentucky has a twelve point late alson
Baylor takes my last shot of the ball game. No
good and the tay Boy, the nice, No champions Kentucky
wild Cats.
Speaker 13 (32:34):
So that was Claude Sullivan's version of a national championship call. So, Gabe,
you grew up here in Kentucky, so you're familiar with
obviously both of those guys. We grew up listening to
you and I listening to Kaywood Darren Group listening to
John Ward down in Tennessee. But just two different guys
Kentucky announcers calling national championships.
Speaker 2 (32:56):
And you know when you listened back to back like that,
there is a similarity in tone of those two announcers.
Speaker 13 (33:04):
It's really interesting.
Speaker 2 (33:05):
But I always love that call by uh By Claude
because his emotions get away from him just.
Speaker 13 (33:10):
For a split second.
Speaker 2 (33:11):
Uh, same with Kay would but you know Claude just
kind of lost his place for just a moment. But
I'm glad you mentioned elgend Baylor because that might have
been the best player in the game.
Speaker 13 (33:20):
Uh, you know, in that game in particular. But I
was in Saint Louis.
Speaker 2 (33:23):
In fact, I was calling the game for the campus radio.
Speaker 13 (33:26):
Say nobody listened, but we needed we should, We should
have your call. Yeah, you don't want to hear.
Speaker 2 (33:29):
That, but no, it was. That was fun and you
know the great thing and Tom knows this. And then
fans who are familiar remember Joe b emptied the bench
in the last minute and a half or so, and
then Duke started to catch up, and here came the
starters again, and that's why James Lee and Kyle and
Roby were in the game for that, James Lee, dun
(33:52):
and Darren Wohend.
Speaker 13 (33:54):
You you know you're in a situation like that when
you know it's the championships all the line. You know
that whatever you say, you know you could be in
that situation for Kentucky women's basketball or Kentucky baseball. You
know what're you going to say is going to live on.
Whenever I've talked to student groups, I said, we'd all
like to come up with do we do? You believe
(34:14):
in miracles, but the first thing is just get the
meat and potatoes, make sure you get the score right
and things like that.
Speaker 16 (34:19):
Yeah, that was one of the first things taught to
me by my mentors was just get get the play
and then take a breath and then fill in with
whatever else you want. And you know, there have been
times this year I've had the opportunity to call some championships,
obviously going to the College World Series with Kentucky Baseball
as tops. And I can tell this story because I've
(34:40):
told it to other people. That's probably the only time
in my career where I had a small note card
with a couple of bullet points written down just because
of the magnitude of that moment, and it was not
a script, but just something you wanted to make sure
you got right because it was like, that's their first one.
Speaker 13 (34:56):
Don't screw that up, man.
Speaker 2 (34:58):
You did a great and yeah it has a long afterlife.
Speaker 13 (35:03):
Yeah it does. It does run good, bad or whatever.
That's right.
Speaker 17 (35:06):
That's right.
Speaker 18 (35:07):
I've run those churches myself well.
Speaker 16 (35:10):
And just real quick, I want to say, listening to
Kaywood and then Claude back to back, it's amazing to
hear Kaywood sort of has that more modern voice that
you hear on radio now, where Claude still has that
old fashioned, you know news where the news real type
of cadence and voice. And it's really interesting to hear
that back to back. Let's hear another one from Kawood.
(35:30):
This is nineteen seventy five, the Mid East Regional final game.
I think you were there in day there this one
Kentucky upsets Indiana ninety two to.
Speaker 17 (35:38):
Ninety Good Kentucky up Indiana. Nighty Good to night.
Speaker 7 (35:42):
Is Bobby Knights joined the food bat that he has
if he's it's the take a hand at Joe Hall.
Speaker 13 (35:50):
And Kit and Ralph were great partners, and Kay would
calls the play and Ralph gets a jab a jab
a note there that you know Kentucky fans loved Ory's
legendary about what Joe B. Hall his players have talked
about this. He wrote some things on a board in
their locker room before the game. And remember this was
a game that they were playing an Indiana team that
(36:11):
had beaten them by twenty four in Bloomington in December.
Kentucky puts itself back in a position to be playing
for a spot in the Final four against an undefeated
Indiana team that Bobby Knight, to his dying day would
say was even better than the one that did go
undefeated win the title the next year. And I think
(36:33):
almost the same team attact, but one different guy in
seventy five Kentucky upsets them and this was what Joby Hall.
Here is a clip from an interview later on after
he had retired, where he tells the story of what
had happened in the Kentucky locker room prior to the game.
It's amazing.
Speaker 18 (36:51):
Before we came out, we went to the locker room
after we'd warmed up, and there was a chalkboard there,
and all the players sat down from that chalkboard and
I didn't say anything for about a minute two minutes,
and then I turned around. I wrote on the chalkboard.
(37:12):
I can't remember exactly, but it was something like a
ladder bus, State Police Coliseum. I wrote those four things
on the blackboard, and the players looked at it, and
so I turned around to them. I said, fellas, when
we cut the net down today, I want to use
(37:34):
a ladder and I want taping scissors. I don't want
a knife. Don't want anybody getting hurt climbing up on
the backboard. We'll cut the nets down with a knife
with scissors from the ladder. And I said, then we'll
all go back on the bus together, because this isn't
(37:55):
our last game this season. You won't go with your
parents or your friends. We'll all ride on the bus together.
And I said, when we crossed the Oi River, the
State Police will pick us up and give us an
escord back to Memorial Coliseum, where we'll have the greatest
(38:16):
celebration this school's ever seen. And so helped me. We
played the game with that kind of confidence. It was
pull Eddie.
Speaker 1 (38:26):
At that game.
Speaker 2 (38:26):
I actually was in the locker room afterwards and saw
the chalkboard with all that stuff written on it, but
had no idea what it was at the time, but
it was great hearing that story from Joe b after
the fact.
Speaker 1 (38:37):
Coming up next, more.
Speaker 2 (38:38):
Calls from the Tom Leach Show earlier today, the Leech Report,
plus radio calls that we didn't have time for when
we pre recorded Tom's show, Tom, Darren Heddrick and yours truly.
We are going to run them in our number two
calling it the Leach Report Overtime here on the Big
Boon Sider.
Speaker 1 (38:55):
Stay with us here on six point thirty wlap.
Speaker 7 (39:04):
Such such.
Speaker 5 (39:16):
Tact that.
Speaker 19 (39:41):
Don't sing, can anything.
Speaker 7 (39:49):
Anything?
Speaker 2 (39:56):
U welcome back to the Big Blue and Sider Dick
(40:49):
Abriel with you. Earlier today, Tom Leach on the Leech
Report presented a great pre recorded show, Yours truly, Darren
Hedrick alongside. We had a lot of fun with old
radio clips and I'm playing back part of the Leech Report,
but we couldn't get to all of them. We will
later on here on Leech Report Overtime on the Big
Blue Insider. Here's a little more from today's Leech Report.
Speaker 13 (41:12):
One of the Kentucky football clip. This is one darn provided.
This is a Claude Sullivan nineteen fifty three game. Was
it against Tennessee against Tennessee at Stolefield? And I believe
it might have been Bear Bryant's last game. Oh wow, Kentucky,
all right, let's hear that.
Speaker 20 (41:25):
Kentucky up to the Tennessee twenty fourth are down to nine,
Bob Hardy mos and meeting big yannag He slips Ball's
hands to pull on Hollow out of the class.
Speaker 17 (41:32):
And twenty three the tenth to five, he's gorn mob
pull Bob Hardy almost bound down.
Speaker 20 (41:42):
It's not the kicking party. He's kicked up for three,
a big one right here and now very important. Tennessee's
kickball on three of theirs. And here's the snap Hardy kicks.
Speaker 11 (41:50):
Ben on twenty seven twenty one. And here's McCloud right now.
Speaker 13 (41:57):
So that was a Claude Sullivan clip. And gave you
said you'd not heard him do football, not not until today.
Speaker 1 (42:04):
That was great.
Speaker 2 (42:06):
Later in the Leach Report, Tom pulled up some of
the great calls from around the SEC, and of course
you've got to include Larry Munson. The legendary Georgia announcer.
Here's a couple of them. This is from the Leech
Report earlier today.
Speaker 13 (42:19):
All right, let's play some classic college calls, guys. One
of the legendary announcers of the South Larry Munson of
the Georgia Bulldogs. He also called Vandy games for a time,
but he became legendary calling the Dogs. First one we
have for you is to night that. Both of these
are from the nineteen eighty season when Georgia won the
national championship. This is herschel Walker was a freshman but
(42:42):
didn't start in his first game, but he came in late.
They were trailing Tennessee, and this is herschel Walker's first
touchdown as a Georgia Bulldog.
Speaker 17 (42:51):
It has not been a night for all, Lady walk,
Georgia knocking on the doorther on the Tennessee sixteen. Tennessee
has dominated this one. Big gave us a break, we
couldn't use it, and.
Speaker 7 (43:01):
Then we gave him a couple of fifteen to two.
Speaker 17 (43:04):
Tennessee leading crowd roaring against Georgia trying.
Speaker 7 (43:07):
To make him drop it so they can't hear.
Speaker 17 (43:09):
We handed off to herschel there's a whole five ten pow.
He's running over people. Oh you hershel Walker, My gone
on money. You ran right through too man. Herschel ran
right over too man. They had him bent away inside
the nine.
Speaker 7 (43:27):
Herschel Walker went sixteen yards.
Speaker 17 (43:29):
He drove right over Orange Church, just driving and running
with those big fis my gon a.
Speaker 2 (43:34):
Freshman so much in the If Munson were going for
a job and gave some suit that tape so I
don't want to be your playmate, black man, they would
have thrown him out the door, and they would have
missed out on that kind of greatness.
Speaker 16 (43:48):
He would have been perfect in the National Hockey League.
Oh you imagine him as a hockey that gosh, he
was perfect where he was. Munson was a we They go,
oh yeah, he Brook. I grew up listening to Kay
would and Kay would never did that, and so I've
never done that?
Speaker 13 (44:06):
Uh John?
Speaker 6 (44:07):
What was?
Speaker 16 (44:07):
John wore that his number one thing was be professional.
That's all whatever said. But for months, and God bless him,
it worked. It was Oh yes, it was part of
his deal. And here's the probably the most famous step.
Speaker 13 (44:19):
Later that year, George is playing against Florida and Georgia's
would eventually go on to be an undefeated champion, but
looked like it was gonna lose and maybe lose out
on a shot at the national Championship. They were trailing
down at that they used to call the world's biggest
cock outdoor cocktail party in Jacksonville, the Georgia Florida Game.
And George is backed up in a hole. It looks
(44:40):
like they're beat times running short, and here's Munson picking
up the call.
Speaker 21 (44:44):
Back third down on eight in trouble, got a block
behind him, gonna throwing a run complete to the twenty
five to the party, Lincoln Stop purty five party, Lincoln
shot forty five fifty five forty one, lend.
Speaker 22 (44:56):
Twenty five twenty fifty five. Plen you stop, you done,
take you gone?
Speaker 10 (45:08):
Well?
Speaker 1 (45:09):
I can't believe it.
Speaker 7 (45:10):
Ninety two yards and Landy really got in a foot race.
Speaker 17 (45:13):
I broke my chair.
Speaker 21 (45:14):
I came right to a chair, a metal steel chair
with about.
Speaker 17 (45:18):
A five inch cushions.
Speaker 7 (45:19):
I broke it. The boots came apart.
Speaker 1 (45:23):
A stadium, well, a stadium pell down.
Speaker 13 (45:25):
Now they do have to renovate this thing.
Speaker 1 (45:27):
You'll have to rebuild it.
Speaker 21 (45:28):
Now this is incredible in all this game has always
been called the world's greatest cocktail party? Do you know
what is gonna happen here tonight? And I puld think
Simonds and check of Island and all those places where
all those dog people have got these condo mediums for
four days. Man, is there gonna be some property destroyed tonight?
Speaker 17 (45:52):
Six dogs on top.
Speaker 7 (45:55):
We were gone. I gave up.
Speaker 17 (45:56):
You sure gone.
Speaker 13 (46:02):
We were gone.
Speaker 6 (46:02):
I gave that.
Speaker 2 (46:04):
I can never decide what's my favorite part of that?
Speaker 13 (46:08):
People with those condominiums.
Speaker 2 (46:10):
Yeah, but while he's calling them by Ron Ndsey, Yeah,
and then no touch on there's Londers.
Speaker 1 (46:14):
God, Londy's got me.
Speaker 13 (46:15):
Oh my god.
Speaker 2 (46:16):
Every time I played it on my show, I have
to do it right before a commercial because I can't
stop lasting so great.
Speaker 13 (46:22):
It's just the SEC Network did a one of those
SEC story things on the Legendary Announcers of the SEC.
I okay, but that was great, right, But Munson was
probably featured in there. Here's another one. This is the
Auburn announcer Men's basketball nineteen eighty eight. Jim Fife from Paintful,
Kentucky was the voice of Auburn at that time. And
(46:46):
the Kentucky was number one. It was a weeknight game,
maybe early in the SEC season. I thinking Auburn comes
in and upsets number one Kentucky on a shot from
the corner by John Taylor. Here is how the Auburn
at work called that.
Speaker 7 (47:01):
Taylor, I'm the three barn time second to go three,
one of my tailors.
Speaker 17 (47:08):
Three can go Aubrey. Great Covin in the court, cord Oh,
I got.
Speaker 11 (47:11):
No good Taylor.
Speaker 7 (47:12):
Cut you all.
Speaker 23 (47:18):
Over Oliver and Oliver.
Speaker 22 (47:20):
Over over Overno. I'm rock Kentucky walk there, rob Ana
these three.
Speaker 13 (47:29):
So I'm just trying to imagine if Keith Madison had
done that in that regional super Regional final. Working with you,
I did just let him go.
Speaker 1 (47:41):
Again.
Speaker 13 (47:41):
I was at that game.
Speaker 2 (47:42):
You might have been at that game and I saw
him go. I was They could not shape. Remember the
Auburn just wouldn't go away. Yes, and Kentucky just played
uninspired last fifty three, fifty two. Yeah, Yeah, it was
a boring game up it well, wasn't boring because it
was tense, but right in front of the bench, he
through that threw that shot.
Speaker 13 (47:57):
In one more clip, this is the University of California Network.
We've all seen the video of uh the Cal player
run at Stanford. Bands coming on the field as the
game is and then Cows gets the kickoff. Looks like
they're beating. They're doing all these laterals and the band
starts on the field because I think the game's over
(48:19):
and it's not. And here's how it sounded on the
col network. It'll probably try to scrim it.
Speaker 7 (48:24):
And he does walk on a loop and the Bears
have to get out.
Speaker 15 (48:27):
About Roger along the sideline on the other one the
until it keep trouble.
Speaker 7 (48:34):
They tried to hello, hello Roger the.
Speaker 17 (48:52):
Fel there were.
Speaker 6 (49:00):
Oh my god about.
Speaker 14 (49:04):
Traumatics.
Speaker 7 (49:08):
Really better show the history of pollet football.
Speaker 24 (49:14):
Guy, I'm over, Oh excul me by my boy, but
I have never never, I've ever.
Speaker 13 (49:26):
Oh my goodness, how many that may have set a
record for adjectives.
Speaker 12 (49:30):
You know.
Speaker 16 (49:30):
The one play that that reminds me of and the
more modern era of radio is Rod Bramblett at Auburn
and the kick six. I was, yeah, and you know
Rod missed him greatly, but man want to call that
one was.
Speaker 2 (49:44):
And really first got away that that was the greatest
play the cow game until that Auburn game, I think.
But then when you mix yeah, but when you mix
in the band, it kind of stands along. And by
the way, that one and some of these come courtesy
of the Miley collection, John down in Evansville, this hobby
of recording games. God bless him, thankfully he did that.
Speaker 13 (50:07):
We've got the voice of UK baseball here, so we're
gonna do a little baseball segment. One that Darren provided
us as Marty Brenneman calling Pete Rose his record breaking
hit when he beat Ty Cobbs record hit forty one
to ninety two of Pete's career. And here's how Marty
Brenneman and Joe Nuxall called it on the REDS Radio network.
Speaker 20 (50:26):
He levels about a couple of times, shall Kicksenny Fires,
Rose Wings.
Speaker 17 (50:35):
Lumber forty one two.
Speaker 22 (50:39):
Drive single into Love Center, Clinton Basin.
Speaker 6 (50:45):
Is pantemonium, I'm.
Speaker 11 (50:46):
Here, let the stadium.
Speaker 13 (50:48):
Marty and Joe guys worked together for years legendary friendship
as well as a broadcast duo. And uh, Joe kind
of stepped on the play by player guy there, but
it kind of worked. It did, it really did?
Speaker 16 (51:00):
And you know, Marty always impressed me by staying under
control so well in the big moments, and the verbiage,
the words that he would find hoisted on the shoulders
or it's pandemonium at Riverfront and things like that. It's
just an amazing play by play voice in the majors.
Speaker 2 (51:19):
Coming up more from not the Leach Report, but the
Leach Report Overtime. We didn't have time for all the
clips that we brought in, but we're going to hear
him tonight on The Big Blue Insider here on six
thirty WLAP. Welcome back to the Big Blue Insider. As promised,
this is the Leach Report overtime. Earlier today, Tom with
a pre recorded show. We had so much fun, Tom,
(51:39):
Darren Hedrick and me. We were all downtown in the
iHeart Studio. Well that's where we are now pre recording
this because we had so many great clips in the
Leach Report, not enough time, so we decided they were
too good to leave in the bin, and we're just
gonna keep right on going with him. So Tom's the
guy in front of the computer. He's got the list,
and this is how we did things on the Leach Report.
(52:00):
I ran a portion of that on The Big Moone's
Side of earlier. So we're gonna pick up Tom where
we left off with all these great clips that that
you and Darren and I have pulled together.
Speaker 1 (52:10):
So guide us through this.
Speaker 13 (52:11):
We'll start with some baseball. This is one of my
favorites growing up as a Reds fan. In nineteen seventy two,
the Reds were like ten games behind the Dodgers coming
up to the All Star Break. That was the big
rivalry that time, when they had two divisions and a
guy named hal King It hits a pinch hit Grand
Slam home run in the first game of a double
(52:31):
header right before the All Star Break, and then the
Reds complete the sweep and they come storming back and
ended up winning the division and they're in the playoffs.
Then to go to the World Series against the Pirates,
and it looks like, you know, the magical run is
going to end. They're down one in the bottom of
the ninth. Dave Justy's pitching for Pittsburgh and he was
their ace closer, and Johnny Bench is at the plate.
(52:53):
The Reds need one run to send it to extra
innings or two to win, and they would Well, I
won't give you away, everybody. Well, here's al Michaels, who
was doing the radio at the time. Is the year
before Marty brownn became the voice of the Reds. Al
Michaels was doing the Reds games with Joe Nuxall. So
this was al Michael's Game five of the nineteen seventy
(53:14):
two playoffs and Johnny Bench at the plate.
Speaker 17 (53:17):
The right hander wines and the one two pitched to bench.
Speaker 7 (53:20):
Johnny swings and drills in a.
Speaker 2 (53:21):
Mile to soul.
Speaker 11 (53:22):
Boy.
Speaker 6 (53:23):
He had all of that one but fow.
Speaker 7 (53:25):
By Funny ended up into the.
Speaker 6 (53:26):
Red seats the upper deck.
Speaker 7 (53:33):
One and two.
Speaker 11 (53:36):
Well, Ryan and it pitched the bench change and the
end the depot field deep j come on Berry home
(54:23):
run till I feel it's wonder right the.
Speaker 13 (54:26):
Game is y George Foster would uh? I think it
was if the extra innings or later and maybe later
in that inning where Bob Moose there's a wild pitch
and George Foster comes in with the winning run. Yes,
was halb Grath to play? How about that? But boy
out let a lot of time pass there, Drek with
the crowd noise on radio.
Speaker 5 (54:44):
Yeah you did.
Speaker 16 (54:44):
And that's the beauty of baseball as you can let
it breathe after the big moment. And I had a
chance to work with some outstanding play by play guys
in the minor leagues learning the craft, and one of
the things was they always said, punch, punch the call
and then lay out and let it breathe and just
soaking that crowd noise and it just owl's another outstanding
when Marty was always good at it too with the Reds.
Speaker 13 (55:07):
Yeah, and if weird thinking about listen to that clip
if you're a Reds fan, and this would have been
here on October of seventy two in the playoffs, Johnny
Bench hits one, you know, the tying home run, what
would have been the tying home run into the Red seats,
and you're thinking, oh, they missed his chance. It went foul,
And then the next pitch he hits it out.
Speaker 2 (55:26):
And how many times, Darren, have you seen a guy
just launch one out foul and the next pitch swinging
to miss.
Speaker 1 (55:32):
Yeah, yeah, that was his shot.
Speaker 13 (55:33):
Yeah, Well, speaking of fair or foul, The next clip
is from seventy five, Game six of the World Series
and the Reds, I always must mention did come back
and win the series in the seventh game, but This
is the most famous game from that series. At Fenway Park,
at about midnight, Carlton Fisk hits the game winning home run.
The call and what they did in those days on
(55:55):
the national radio call or no, I think it was
a national radio call. The localnouncers weren't allowed to do
the games, right, that's uh. Marty would do some eatings
with the national guy, and this happened to be the
Red Sox announcer gotting Ned Martin with Kurt Gowdi on
the Carlton.
Speaker 14 (56:11):
Fist home run, O delivery to Fisk, Swain's long drive
left veil. If a say Paris gone, who runs the
let Tuck wins the theories and time three games apiece,
damming out in the field if teammates are waiting for
him and the Red st I've cut the world theories
in the game seven for the.
Speaker 2 (56:32):
Dramatic seven Reds Fans didn't think it was fair because
Kurt Gowdy had been a Red Sox announcer.
Speaker 1 (56:37):
That's right, you know, but he was the national guy yet.
Speaker 7 (56:40):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (56:41):
The to me, one of the great follow up stories
on that a sidebar. I saw this in Sports Illustrated.
Speaker 2 (56:46):
Was and I it caught my attention was a piece
of lineard, a cartoon drawing of a camera with a
rat standing on top of it staring at the cameraman.
And it was the story of why that famous shot,
that ISO shot of Carlton Fisk. He stayed on Carlton Fist,
the camera operator did. He was supposed to follow the ball,
but he had his you know, he had Fisk in
(57:07):
his in his viewfinder, and he looked up and literally
in the old scoreboard at Fenway one hundred years old,
there was a rat on top of his camera and
it freaked him out. And so by the time you
look back in his viewfinder, he had lost the ball.
Knew he couldn't find the ball, so he stayed on Fisk.
And that's why you see that shot of Fisk doing
the body English thing, waving a fair and yeah, thanks
(57:29):
to some rat that will go unnamed.
Speaker 13 (57:32):
Its fans thought Carlton Fisk was a rat for hitting.
Speaker 1 (57:35):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (57:36):
That's the game too where Pete Rose came to the
plate late in the game and turned the Fisk and said,
this is one great game, isn't it, or.
Speaker 1 (57:43):
Something like that.
Speaker 13 (57:45):
Next we're gonna play two back to back. This is
the nineteen eighty eight. I'm pretty sure Gabe and I
were doing a postgame football calling show on the network
at that time, and so we had the game on
with no sound. First, we're gonna hear Kirk Gibson comes
wasn't expected to play, is able to come up and
(58:07):
give him a few swings against the A's. They need
a miracle for the Dodgers to win Game one. Dennis
Eckersley the ace closer on the hill. So Kirk Gibson
provided the miracle. We'll hear Vin Scully's TV call. Then
we'll set up the radio call.
Speaker 11 (58:21):
High fly ball in the right veil.
Speaker 9 (58:24):
She has gone.
Speaker 15 (58:32):
In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible
has happened.
Speaker 13 (58:40):
So I've edited out some of the long clip of
just crowd noise. That's Scully let it go for a
long time. In radio usually don't let it go that long.
This was the Jack Buck call on national radio of
the same play.
Speaker 7 (58:55):
Swigs and a flyball and the bright fail.
Speaker 24 (58:58):
It's gonna be on round unbelievable run forgets it and
the Tigers have won the game five before. I don't
believe what I cut off.
Speaker 13 (59:11):
I don't believe what I cut off, So Dared, you're
the baseball voice for the Cats. That's two different versions.
Both were really.
Speaker 16 (59:21):
Good and they're outstanding. Yeah, I mean they're iconic calls.
As soon as you hear it, you instantly remember hearing
that somewhere at some point along the way. Just two
iconic announcers and two iconic calls. And of course Jack's
other famous call is that we'll see you tomorrow night
on a walk off home run.
Speaker 2 (59:39):
Said the Aussie smith. One I believe, so it was,
And you know what, tom we were not working together
that night. I remember exactly where I was.
Speaker 1 (59:46):
It was so late that night.
Speaker 2 (59:48):
I was filling in anchoring the sports magazine show he
did at KYT twenty seven Sports Spectrum, and the other.
Speaker 1 (59:54):
Guys are on vacation.
Speaker 2 (59:55):
So I'm down there and i'm and the game's still
going on and our show had already begun. That's late
it was running, and one of our editors came running
down into the studio with a script in his hand,
and he said, you aren't going to believe what just happened,
and he described what happened. So the first time I
saw that was when I was describing the highlight for
(01:00:16):
the sportscast, and again, I just like Jack Buck, I
could not believe what I saw.
Speaker 1 (01:00:21):
So you've it's funny obviously, games like that moment you
remember where you were.
Speaker 2 (01:00:25):
More to come of the Leach Report Overtime here in
the Big Blue and Sider six thirty WLAP. Welcome back
to the Big Blue and Sider if you're just joining us.
Earlier today on the Leach Report, Tom presented a lot
of great old radio calls, and we excerpted part of
his show earlier on The Big Blue Insider. But we
had so many leftovers that after we got done taping
(01:00:47):
Tom's show in studio, Tom, Darren Hedrick and I kept
going and we're calling it the Leach Report Overtime. Because
we had so many other great radio calls, we decided
to extend the Leach Report in the Big Moonsider. So
here's part two of the Lead Report overtime of Tom
setting up clips with Darren and me.
Speaker 13 (01:01:07):
This next clip is from the ninety two National League
Championship Series. This one's for our buddy Shanon.
Speaker 5 (01:01:14):
The dude.
Speaker 13 (01:01:15):
Sid Bream scores the winning run as the Braves rally
to beat Barry Bonds and the pirates.
Speaker 24 (01:01:22):
It's the two one Sean legg Let's taie then head
turn heads, the crying of the bike.
Speaker 6 (01:01:31):
Say pray when right?
Speaker 19 (01:01:34):
When rave when?
Speaker 7 (01:01:40):
Then they have to hospitalize said gram He's.
Speaker 23 (01:01:43):
Done at the bottom of a huge pile at the blake.
Speaker 13 (01:01:47):
I think there was skip carry on the call.
Speaker 1 (01:01:50):
That sounds right.
Speaker 16 (01:01:51):
I always remember of that slide, the Sean McDonough TV
call where his voice breaks and he goes oof.
Speaker 13 (01:02:01):
And you know, sid breams as the old thing goes.
Had to be timed with a sun.
Speaker 1 (01:02:05):
Dial, but a good old fashioned slide.
Speaker 13 (01:02:08):
Brother, Yes, it was all right. Here's the next clip.
This is an NFL clip in nineteen seventy. I think
this was I've got it in my notes. Tom Dempsey,
who was born with only half of a right foot,
and so his shoe is, you know, flat on the
end of his foot like half a shoe, didn't have
(01:02:29):
any toes exactly. But he became a kicker in the
National Football League for the New Orleans Saints and the
longest history longest field goal in the NFL history at
that point was fifty six yards. They send him out,
I think against the Lions to attempt a sixty three
yard and a straight on kicker. Straight on kicker. Yeah,
they was going mostly soccer style at that point. He
was still straight on. And this is how it was
(01:02:50):
called on the Saints network. I don't know who the
Playboy play guy was, but there you can tell her
even amazed that he's attempting.
Speaker 23 (01:02:55):
This field goal, and naturally History they're sending it on
with two second raft Star Petty Will hold tips they
will have to kick one sixty two yards.
Speaker 7 (01:03:09):
To win the ball game.
Speaker 6 (01:03:11):
Holy, they're right.
Speaker 25 (01:03:12):
I've seen them all, but this is a just expending moments.
It's Saint History Star Petty will hold two seconds left.
Here's the stop, the ball of down, that's to kick
the time away.
Speaker 13 (01:03:36):
What's ay? You get the call up? It's al Western
l call Okay.
Speaker 1 (01:03:41):
Sounded a little bit like Larry Munson.
Speaker 13 (01:03:43):
How about that? It almost Yeah, it did a little bit.
Just an amazing moment. The next one, another memorable NFL moment.
Guy named Van Patrick was on the call like he
was the mutual radio network announcer. And this is the
immaculate receptions. Look like they're going to beat the Steelers.
Jack Tatum breaks up a pass from Terry Bradshaw. But
(01:04:04):
it deflects to Frank o Harris who runs it in
for the winning touchdown for the Steelers.
Speaker 7 (01:04:09):
That goes back, y'all, he looking, he's in trouble.
Speaker 14 (01:04:12):
Back there.
Speaker 11 (01:04:13):
He rolls out of the right.
Speaker 6 (01:04:14):
He looks, he throws.
Speaker 11 (01:04:16):
Deep and it is out of the way. He cut
in Your hair.
Speaker 7 (01:04:22):
Has at the body up stop.
Speaker 2 (01:04:34):
I saw a documentary about that play. They re enacted it,
and there's still You've got raiders people who absolutely say
that the ball touched the ground and if Frank o'harris
played it so coyly that you're never quite.
Speaker 13 (01:04:49):
Sure he caught it, I mean, like off the shoelaces,
if it didn't. That's exactly right so close. Next one's
an NBA clip. Johnny Most was a legendary announcer for
the Celtics. This was the play where Larry Bird comes
up with a steel looks like the Pistons are gonna
beat the Celtics in nineteen eighty seven and the I
think this was in the Eastern Conference finals and Bird
(01:05:09):
comes up with a game winning steal.
Speaker 11 (01:05:11):
Now that's a dale by Bird underneath the day joint right.
Speaker 23 (01:05:17):
Right up one on my barb burn.
Speaker 11 (01:05:22):
Dole in Bobby Man lighting up the day by dame guy.
Light it up with them one by rame on one,
not gonna lae.
Speaker 19 (01:05:33):
Wow by that light not dog right.
Speaker 13 (01:05:37):
That is the distinctive voice, Gabe of Johnny Most you're.
Speaker 1 (01:05:40):
A Celtics fan, you loved him. If you're not a
Celtics fan.
Speaker 2 (01:05:44):
And he used to call I can't remember the two pistons,
but when they were going at the bad Boy Pistons,
you call one mcphilthy and the other one McNasty.
Speaker 13 (01:05:53):
Rick Mahorn and Bill Ebier.
Speaker 25 (01:05:54):
That's it.
Speaker 1 (01:05:55):
That's it.
Speaker 13 (01:05:55):
Yeah, I don't know which was which, but that didn't matter.
Speaker 10 (01:05:59):
Uh.
Speaker 13 (01:05:59):
And then gave you had a couple of clips from
last basketball season you wanted to use.
Speaker 2 (01:06:04):
You guys, you and Jack calling Well, I was looking
for the Tennessee games because when when Kentucky is beating Tennessee,
there's nobody giddier than Jack Gibbons, except maybe Jeff Pcorrel.
Speaker 11 (01:06:16):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:06:16):
But when it comes to basketball. But I felt like
the Oklahoma wins both of them last year. One is
regular season and one is in the tournament. And you
you did such a great job Tom of both. But
we've got the regular season game. And then We'll follow
that up with the fat the great finish it both
by Otaga Oway in the SEC tournament, that's where Jack
(01:06:39):
almost lost his mind.
Speaker 13 (01:06:40):
But here they are calls for Oway to come out.
He takes the hand off, always got it, goes to
his left down Mulane, angles right, flips it up godad
with six seconds to play. Here comes Oklahoma. Fierce drives
into the lane, goes for the ramis clock by Garrison,
picked up by Prayer.
Speaker 14 (01:06:58):
Oh my, heros on the clock.
Speaker 11 (01:07:00):
Cant the cats get out of.
Speaker 4 (01:07:01):
Oklaholm on the wind?
Speaker 7 (01:07:02):
What whin?
Speaker 10 (01:07:04):
Oh?
Speaker 15 (01:07:05):
Tag always saves the day against his former school.
Speaker 13 (01:07:10):
And then the next one was in the SEC tournament.
Speaker 1 (01:07:12):
Yes, Sir comes into Oway.
Speaker 16 (01:07:15):
O Way sprints up in the front court, drives it
down to the baseline, flips.
Speaker 1 (01:07:18):
It up good Tucky like five to play shot from
back parts.
Speaker 4 (01:07:24):
No, oh my, oh Way saves the day.
Speaker 15 (01:07:30):
He did it twice.
Speaker 1 (01:07:33):
Oh that had to be fun.
Speaker 13 (01:07:34):
It was sometimes this is It's just fun watching Jack
or Pick react. Well another one I remember Kentucky beat
LSU in ninety eight at Tiger Stadium on a last
second seth Hanson field goal. And I'm calling the play
Darren and all once in in my headphones out here. Yeah,
and I look to my left and there's our dear
friend Jeff van Nod, a former Wildcat who didn't have
(01:07:56):
any wins against LSU, leaning out the booth, pumping both
fists at the LSU fans because.
Speaker 1 (01:08:02):
We would hear it, you guys would from the fans
during the game. I'm sure you have too, So Darren,
you've got some favorites as well.
Speaker 16 (01:08:11):
Yeah, there's one from the nineteen forty seven World Series.
It's it's a Red Barber's calling Game six against the
New York Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers, who he was
the announcer for came back at Ebbittsfield to win it.
And if you ever have a chance to listen to Red,
he's outstanding. He wrote a book that's basically my bible
for play by play broadcasts. Yeah, it's called The Broadcasters
(01:08:33):
by Red Barber, published in nineteen seventy. You can still
find it online for thirty forty bucks. But if your
prospective play by play announcer. But yeah, just an outstanding call.
And this is a rally by the Dodgers to try
to beat the Yankees. And force a game seven.
Speaker 26 (01:08:49):
Daddy's thank you stepping in.
Speaker 10 (01:08:50):
Wait a minute, Stanky has been.
Speaker 11 (01:08:52):
Called back from the plate and Lava Joadall goes.
Speaker 4 (01:08:54):
Up to hit.
Speaker 26 (01:08:56):
The Yankees are a head two to one. Jean Fada
all the pench runners at second the tying run, mixes
the winning runs at first base, both of them on
with walks. Both the pinch runners no hips by Bevans.
Speaker 10 (01:09:08):
Eight and two thirds innings, two.
Speaker 17 (01:09:10):
Out, last of the night.
Speaker 26 (01:09:11):
The pitch the lavajet All swung on and mess the
fastball that was in there, strike one. Jennifedo walks off second,
mix us off first. They're both ready to go on anything.
Two men out, last of the night. The pitch swung
on as a drive, head out to where the right
pil Connor Henrick, is going back.
Speaker 14 (01:09:29):
He can't get it to talk the wall for a
base hit.
Speaker 11 (01:09:31):
Here comes the tying run and here comes the winning run.
Speaker 26 (01:09:40):
Friends, they're killing Lava hut All on teammates. They are
beating them to pieces, and it's taking a police a
spot to get the lavaget All away from the Dodgers.
Speaker 16 (01:09:50):
By the way, the player's name is Cookie Lavagello's. That's
so Eddie Stinky was the many pinch hit for and
you know Barber was a Southerner, Yes, and Alabama got
exactly and.
Speaker 1 (01:10:00):
Landed that job. There's no way that's gonna happen now.
Speaker 2 (01:10:04):
And in reverse, Eli Gold was in New Yorker who
wound up the voice of Alabama but a NASCAR But
it took a while for Alabama fans to accept Eli.
Speaker 1 (01:10:13):
But the winning is what did that for him.
Speaker 2 (01:10:15):
But today you would be deprived of a guy like
Red Barber, his greatness doing a game, doing a team
like the Yankees. More great clips and I don't mean
haircuts with Darren Hedrick and you were truly on the
big booming sider. Next six thirty we will wrap up
with a couple of Darren Hedrick calls. And again I've
played these more than once, but we got to hear
him again. This is from the College World Series. This
(01:10:37):
is from Kentucky's win over in Ceas State. A couple
of home run calls and you set the stage so well.
Speaker 16 (01:10:44):
This was the bottom of the ninth right, yeah, radicles ninth, Yeah,
the bottom of the ninth inning. Ryan Nicholson comes up,
and I believe I'd have to go back and look,
but I think he may have led off that inning
and hit the home run. It was either the first
or second at bat of the ninth inning, hit the
tying home run. And then they came up in the
bottom of the tenth with two out. Devin Burks had
(01:11:05):
just been caught stealing for the second out, so all
the momentum was on ENCY State side.
Speaker 2 (01:11:10):
Here here's Ryan Nicholson's bomb three two one. Then he
get into the tenth inning and another home run. By
the way, this was the third home run of the
game because Nolan McCarthy had homered earlier. Then the bass
kind of went to sleep, and I remember sitting there
in Omah thinking could this happen again?
Speaker 10 (01:11:29):
And it did?
Speaker 16 (01:11:29):
That's right, and you know you think about so Nicholson
hit the tying home run. Then Krittenberger in the top
half the inning, this outstanding catching left center.
Speaker 13 (01:11:37):
The wind picked up the ball and he was.
Speaker 1 (01:11:39):
Able to make a defensive replacement.
Speaker 5 (01:11:41):
That's right.
Speaker 16 (01:11:42):
And then in the bottom of the tenth tie game.
Kentucky was two outs. Devin Burks I think had just
been caught stealing. That had an outstanding catcher, but NC
State had all the momentum and uh, hanging slider.
Speaker 1 (01:11:54):
Mitch Daley was ready for it, so great call.
Speaker 2 (01:11:59):
Uh what was coach Madison doing? I mean, did he
almost jump out the window because he was right.
Speaker 5 (01:12:03):
There with you?
Speaker 13 (01:12:04):
He did, you know, he's always so excited. He's just
a ball of it. No, he was sitting there next
to me.
Speaker 16 (01:12:10):
I think he was trying not to clap, but he
gave two fist pumps, stood up out of his chair
and as soon as I said Daily wins it the
first time you could hear him go yes, and he
was fist pumping.
Speaker 5 (01:12:22):
Yeah, he was excited.
Speaker 1 (01:12:27):
And guys real quickly.
Speaker 16 (01:12:28):
I just want to throw in another baseball clip we
heard on Tom Leach's show earlier, the number six Aaron
judge sixty second record breaking home run called by John Sterling.
Thought we'd go way back in time to nineteen sixty
one and hear Roger Morris's then record breaking number sixty
one and the great Phil Rizzuto on the call.
Speaker 10 (01:12:49):
Yeah, standing up waiting to see if marason't going to
hit number sixty one. Here's the wind up the pitch,
the rajah way outside.
Speaker 7 (01:12:56):
Ball line.
Speaker 4 (01:13:00):
Of the scotting the ball.
Speaker 10 (01:13:02):
Low ball too that one within the Derek and the
brus get louder.
Speaker 7 (01:13:08):
New balls, no.
Speaker 10 (01:13:09):
Stripes on Roger Morris. Here's the wind up fastball hit people.
Speaker 6 (01:13:13):
Light clip me up here? Who down?
Speaker 23 (01:13:27):
Let us?
Speaker 10 (01:13:28):
Shot? Another's planning our versions for Roger Alice sect me
one home line from this.
Speaker 1 (01:13:34):
We're fighting for that ball out there.
Speaker 10 (01:13:36):
People were climbing over each other's back. One of the
greatest taps I've ever seen her at Yanks City.
Speaker 1 (01:13:42):
What a clip there in.
Speaker 16 (01:13:43):
My favorite part is listening or look at him fighting
for that ball out there.
Speaker 1 (01:13:48):
A couple more really to finish up with.
Speaker 2 (01:13:49):
One of our favorite people, of course, is Doug Flynn,
part of the Chain Gang or Chain and tex gam messages.
Speaker 1 (01:13:54):
We actually have the call of Doug Flynn's first home run.
Speaker 24 (01:14:00):
I'm in a deep left field and is going to
pay hey hold run.
Speaker 7 (01:14:04):
For dot clamp.
Speaker 22 (01:14:08):
Plan on a three to one pet Pavers went out
of here the left field this fat thaker link home
run and at eleven of four incinatic.
Speaker 7 (01:14:19):
Well, I want to throw up for that young man.
Speaker 1 (01:14:22):
Magical moment. I think we'll both agree that's right, but
we will leave you with this. Television has a rule
which is a good one.
Speaker 2 (01:14:29):
Now if so many had jumps on the field of
playing surface whatever, Television directors do not show it because
it only encourages it. But Kevin Harlan one night on
Monday Night football had so much fun with a fan
who jumped on the field and took off running. I
think he was working Harlan with maybe Boomer Assassin, but
this was Kevin Harland Radio.
Speaker 1 (01:14:50):
You can't let this go right.
Speaker 2 (01:14:51):
Here's how Kevin Harland called it when a fan jumped
on the field somewhere and didn't quite make the end zone.
Speaker 27 (01:14:57):
Hey, somebody has run out on the field balling a
hat and a red shirt. How he takes off the shirt.
He's running down the middle by the fifty. He's at
the thirty. He's bear chested and banging his chest. Now
he runs the opposite way. He runs with the fifty,
he runs with the forty. The guy is drunk. But
there he goes the twenty. They're chasing him. They're not
gonna get him. Waving his arms bear tested. Somebody stopped.
(01:15:21):
That comes the blue coat. They got him here.
Speaker 14 (01:15:24):
Coming from the roofs Oh were they tackling at the
forty yard line?
Speaker 27 (01:15:27):
I hope it was worth it, my friend, because it
got a Knight in the clank coming up.
Speaker 2 (01:15:34):
Oh man, he's got such a great sense of hearing
iron Eagle us too, and every now and then those
guys let it come through.
Speaker 5 (01:15:40):
That's the perfect one to end on.
Speaker 2 (01:15:44):
That was fun putting that together, and again thanks to
Tom Leech and Darren Hedrick, and it was fun being
a part of it. I'm glad we could share the
Leech Report over time with you here on the Big
Balloon Siders. So let us wrap up the week with heroes,
fools and flakes. And our hero tonight is Eli Drinkwitz.
He is the head coach at Missouri and I bring
(01:16:05):
him up. He's a good coach, obviously, but really on
top of his game at SEC Media Days.
Speaker 25 (01:16:11):
Now.
Speaker 2 (01:16:11):
This came in the big room in the writer's room,
not in the electronic media room where we were, but
he talked, among other things, about his team's offseason mission
trip to Jamaica. He talked about the Epstein files. He
talked about I'm sorry I missed this, I've seen the
clip the jfk assassination. This all came in his opening
statement at SEC Media Days, and he also had an
(01:16:34):
idea on how to fix the college football playoff. I'm
not saying I'm in favor of this, but he said, no,
not twelve, fourteen or sixteen teams. He said, thirty teams
with the SEC and the Big ten with given four bids,
the ACC and the Big twelve get three each, and so.
Speaker 17 (01:16:49):
On and so on.
Speaker 2 (01:16:49):
So and I'm not knocking any other coach to Oops
did a nice job, but I just like him when
guys like drink Woods get up there and have fun
with it, and he did, and he was serious about
all lot of this stuff.
Speaker 1 (01:17:00):
So tip of the cap to him.
Speaker 2 (01:17:02):
And he again, he's done a nice job at Missou,
which is no longer an automatic win for a lot
of people in the Southeastern Conference.
Speaker 1 (01:17:10):
Our full tonight is Rossi Rice of the Kansas City Chiefs.
It could be any number of pro athletes or college
for that matter, who lose their minds when they get
behind the wheel.
Speaker 2 (01:17:21):
This guy was sentenced to thirty days of jail time
in five years of probation for his role in a
multi car crash last year. You might remember this. It
happened in Dallas. He was part of this crash and
he fled the scene and in part of the pleagrim,
he had to pay more than one hundred and fifteen
thousand dollars in restitution to the victims of the crash
(01:17:42):
for medical expenses. Now the NFL can expedite disciplinary process
of Rice likely to get a multi.
Speaker 1 (01:17:49):
Game suspension at some point during the upcoming year. I
don't know what it is. We've talked about it before. Well,
I do know what it is.
Speaker 2 (01:17:56):
Young people who are in the best physical can edition
of their lives think they're bulletproof, and in some instances
they are, but the people around them are not. They
get behind the wheel, they lose their minds. This guy
was doing one to nineteen in a Lamborghini Sport utility
vehicle back in May of twenty twenty four and was
(01:18:18):
part of a multi car crash. He did apologize, but
too a little too late, and he's going to jail
our flake tonight. JJ Watt retired now and one of
the all time great defensive players in the history of
the National Football League.
Speaker 1 (01:18:33):
But he is the brother of TJ.
Speaker 2 (01:18:36):
Watt, who just signed a record setting deal with the
Pittsburgh Steelers. After all this talk about maybe Pittsburgh trades him.
Speaker 1 (01:18:44):
He gets a three year.
Speaker 2 (01:18:45):
Extension worth a total of one hundred and twenty three
million dollars. And again that makes him the highest and
paid non quarterback in NFL history. And it is an
NFL contract, so you know he may not get that
are one twenty three, but I think forty million of
it was guaranteed. Anyway, his brother whose career earnings were
(01:19:07):
one hundred and twenty nine million, and now this extension
by TJ is for one twenty three.
Speaker 1 (01:19:14):
JJ tweeted this. He said, I swear that this guy
even lets me begin to reach for my wallet at dinner.
Speaker 13 (01:19:22):
I gotta like that.
Speaker 4 (01:19:23):
I think they did.
Speaker 1 (01:19:24):
Dorito's commercials during the Super Bowl last year. Anyway, that'll
do it.
Speaker 2 (01:19:28):
Thanks to Jeff macorrel, thanks to Tom Leachser and HEADV
Cats It good Night from the Garage and Lexander.
Speaker 8 (01:19:36):
Come with the album No.
Speaker 13 (01:19:38):
Gary Clarkson.
Speaker 19 (01:20:01):
Tact Tact then backed out Tact tat Tatto
