Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Big Blue and Sider Dick Gabriel with
you on a Tuesday edition of our program, and coming
up tonight, we're going to be football heavy.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
For those of you who.

Speaker 1 (00:07):
Complain that we talk about things other than football in
the talking season, which is what Mark Stoop's dubbed this
time of year. People have complained, you know, why are
we talking about basketball or whatever when it's we're getting
ready for football. Well you're gonna like it tonight. Coming
up a little bit later on Wesley Woodyard, who chatted
with me earlier today on the Leech Report. We're going

(00:30):
to talk football with Wesley as well as hear a
little bit about his charity golf tournament. Then in hour
number two, we're visiting with Jeremy Jarman, and we haven't
talked to Jeremy in a while, maybe once since the
last season. Well, we're going to talk about the upcoming season,
things that happened last year, the state of college football
in general. We'll talk to Jeremy. I always love talking

(00:50):
football with Double Jay, so that's coming up in our
number two. We're also going to hear from Molly Tuzzo.
Today was UK Volleyball Media Day.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
And we'll hear from her.

Speaker 1 (01:01):
She's a veteran and has won two SEC championships. Wildcats,
of course they won eight straight. They have they've been
picked to win it all in the SEC, which makes
them national contenders. So we hear from Molly. Coming up
in just a few minutes, Waltz. Here from Scotti Scheffler,
who is of course the greatest golfer in the world.
Another win this past week, and he was wondering, why

(01:25):
do we do this? Why do we work so hard
to win? And then in a few minutes we're moving
on to the next thing. So we hear those comments
as well. But I did want to share. Yep, this
is some basketball stuff with you, but some football stuff
as well. And again this is the off season, the
talking season, the internet, the bottomless pit that we have
to fill. I will start with the football stuff. Nil

(01:48):
valuations done via on three dot com. They basically broke
down the values how much these kids are making the.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
Top I'll go over the top ten with you.

Speaker 1 (01:59):
Nine of them are quarterbacks. There's one basketball player and
if you sat down he knew anything about recruiting, you
could probably figure out who it is. I'll give you
a clue that player has yet to play a game
in Division one college basketball.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
But let us start at the top.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
Arch Manning, the junior quarterback at Texas.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
The Wildcats.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
You, you, fans and players, will see him this year,
assuming he stays healthy. Jeff Ricor and I were talking
about this on the way down to media Days. Fascinating
situation at Texas. Last year. Arch Manning wasn't even a starter,
and yet he is now just you know, the highest

(02:42):
paid player in terms of nil, which is all well
and good, but has yet to claim the starting job.
He will be the starter for Texas, but couldn't win
the starting job last year. And even now some people
think he'll be the top quarterback, the number one pick
in the draft, and he didn't start at Texas last year.
You figure it out. But six point eight millions nil

(03:06):
valuation six point eight million for arch Manning. Number two,
Carson Beck who transferred to Miami four point three million.
Jeremiah Smith, quarterback at Ohio State, four point two million.
He's number three. Next is the basketball player and that's
Aj Debantsa. He was the top recruit in the country.

(03:29):
Signed with Brigham Young four point one million. Garrett Nussmayer
LSU red shirt senior quarterback three point eight million.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
He's fifth.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
Leonoras Sellers is number six. He's the kid at South Carolina.
Really good player. You'll see him this year three point
seven million. You'll also see the next guy, DJ Lagway
Florida three point seven million. Number eight is Caid Klubnik,
the quarterback at Clemson and three point four million. And

(04:03):
then Brigham Young's got another one in the top ten,
the quarterback Drew Aller three point one million. And number
ten is Sam Levitt. He is the Arizona State quarterback
three point one million. Now, in case you're wondering, yes,
there is a Wildcat on this list the top twenty five.

(04:25):
Actually he's twenty six. You might not be able to
guess this one. It is a basketball player, Jaden Quaintin's
that's right, five star, big guy six' ten sitting out
right now with.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
A bum knee at.

Speaker 1 (04:38):
Surgery but at number twenty six one point nine, million
just Behind auburn Quarterback Jackson. Arnold he's got a two
million dollar price tag on. Him so that's another quarterback
you will see this year squaring off against The. Wildcats

(04:58):
this is via a on three dot. Com so if
you want to check out the entire, list that's where you.
Go but as we, mentioned these are the, rankings the
kinds of stories that really take up our time and
space in the off, season as well as comments from,
coaches including One John. Caliperi he spoke to The Little

(05:22):
Rock Rotary club the other day and it's a message
that you have. Heard he was saying this when he was.
Here he's been saying it for a, while but he
was talking about transfers to transfer, rule AND i l
the money and.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
The fact that many of you have talk to me about.
This kids who.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
Transfer and transfer and transfer and. Transfer then what because
when's the last time you heard about a kid who
transferred three and four times and went on to a
great pro.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
Career doesn't seem like that's.

Speaker 1 (05:53):
Happening you got to hope they're saving their, money and
you know taxes are reading up a lot of. That
but what happens when they get out of s cool
and Cali peri was talking about that and other things
the other day to the rotary In Little.

Speaker 3 (06:07):
ROCK i say to, you if a kid transfers four,
times is he going to graduate from that? School there's no,
way you can't. Graduate so now you're going to be
done playing without a college. Degree you have no ties
to the last school you went to where they feel

(06:27):
that you're From. Arkansas you played, here we're. Here you're
going to have. Opportunity that's. Done you're offered fifty five
thousand dollars in your first job and you, go what
fifty five thousand DO i have to show?

Speaker 4 (06:44):
Up are they gonna you? Got you got me an?

Speaker 5 (06:48):
Apartment?

Speaker 2 (06:48):
Right or a?

Speaker 3 (06:49):
CAR i mean They i'm worried about mental, health mental.
Health That, Look i've been, poor and you know it's
worse than being, poor coming across some money and then
being poor. Again that's the. Worst that's probably WHY i

(07:13):
am cheap Because i'm not going back. There but so
my thing, is And i've been pushing. This you can
transfer once without penalty because you picked the wrong, school
the coach lied to. You there was another player that
came that you didn't know about one, time and after
that you got to sit because what do you think

(07:35):
they're transferring?

Speaker 4 (07:36):
For somebody helped me?

Speaker 2 (07:38):
Here why they say?

Speaker 6 (07:39):
It that's?

Speaker 3 (07:41):
It it isn't because they're mad at this or THAT
i can extort you and if you don't give it to,
Me i'm going over. Here if we cure, That i've
been saying it for five. Years no one listens to.
Me my DOG i called, me runs the other.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
Way my wife.

Speaker 7 (07:55):
Doesn't listen to.

Speaker 6 (07:56):
Me no one.

Speaker 2 (07:57):
Listens if we cure.

Speaker 3 (07:59):
The transfer for, rule seventy percent of our problems go.
Away we can deal with all the other.

Speaker 4 (08:06):
Stuff.

Speaker 1 (08:08):
Now i'm sure some of you listening may have rolled your,
eyes maybe a lot of.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
You why are you.

Speaker 1 (08:12):
Listening To John. Calaperi he's not here anymore that, message
AS i, said he was sharing that with us when
he was. Here and, really that could be any coach
In america saying. That and none of these coaches begrudged
these kids the money they're.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
Making it's the.

Speaker 1 (08:30):
Transferring And i'll promise you every coach In america agrees
With Cali perry when it comes to that the one.
Transfer of course they do some, coaches many coaches have
benefited from the. Transfers But i've got to think they
would prefer the one transfer rule and they would adjust to.

Speaker 4 (08:49):
That.

Speaker 1 (08:51):
Now this comment was retweeted By Dan walkin OF usa
today and kind of made a snarky. Comment he, said
the problem is nobody wants to hear that From, caliperi
WHICH i didn't quite. UNDERSTAND i, mean if it's if
there's a personal dislike in, disregard that's.

Speaker 2 (09:09):
Fine BUT i was trying.

Speaker 1 (09:12):
To think back on why would someone say that About
calipery as it relates to his track. Record he's not
a guy who jumped. Around he went From massachusetts To
memphis To kentucky for a long. Time AND i think
we'll all agree he didn't necessarily want to, leave but
knew he probably should and now is At, arkansas and,

(09:34):
YES i know he makes a ton of. Money and
he was fond of saying it's not about the money
whenever somebody says, that it's always about the. Money but
there weren't that many times when we, heard Well caliberry
might leave because of, money things like. THAT i just
think there's an inherent dislike from some media people when
it comes to.

Speaker 2 (09:52):
HIM i got along with.

Speaker 1 (09:53):
Him we weren't, close we weren't, boys we didn't we never,
talked you, know a w away from an interview, situation that's.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
OKAY i didn't want to be his.

Speaker 1 (10:03):
PAL i wanted to cover his, teams AND i, did
BUT i did think his comments were interesting AND i
think they were. Relevant and AS i, said any other
college coach could have said, that we'd all sit up
straight and, say, yeah that guy's got a great. Point
but for whatever, Reason walkin took his wife at. HIM
i offer the comments without comment except to SAY i

(10:26):
agree with, him you, know and maybe things will.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
Change who.

Speaker 1 (10:29):
Knows other stuff from the, interweb WHICH i find. Fascinating
The athletic via The New York times has ranked the
best college basketball teams of the twenty first, century the
top twenty five best college basketball teams of the twenty first,
century and of Course kentucky's national championship team is on this,

(10:51):
list as it will it should. Be what's fascinating is
The wisconsin team that beat THE uk undefeated teams only
ranked twenty six in his, poll thought it might be.
Higher Caliperi's memphis, team which lost To kansas should have
won but lost in, overtime was ranked number. Twenty The
duke team that beat That wisconsin team in twenty fifteen

(11:14):
is ranked. Nineteen And i'm gonna go over the top
ten with, you BUT i will tell you coming into
number fourteen As Patinos Louisville Ball club from twenty twelve,
thirteen the national championship team that Beat michigan just before,
that last Year's florida team ranked number, thirteen but looking
at the top ten and twenty Nineteen virginia team remember

(11:36):
that team won at the year after being knocked out
in the first. Round then the Seven florida, team the
second of the back to back championship teams For Billy, Donovan,
Horford Noah.

Speaker 2 (11:47):
Brewer And Torren.

Speaker 1 (11:48):
Green number Eight baylor which only lost two games in
twenty twenty, One villanova in twenty seven, eight twenty seventeen.
Eighteen The kansas team that won it in twenty eight
With Mario, chalmers the team to.

Speaker 2 (12:03):
Beat, memphis was ranked.

Speaker 1 (12:05):
Sixth twenty oh Nine North Carolina Tyler.

Speaker 2 (12:08):
Hansbros Team was ranked.

Speaker 1 (12:09):
Fifth the fifty to twenty Fifteen kentucky team that won
thirty eight to. One Carl Anthony towns team ranked fourth
in the twenty first century and MAYBE i think it's
number one if they win. It yukon from twenty twenty
four was ranked. Third The John i'm sorry The Anthony,
Davis kentucky team that won the. Title ranked second and

(12:35):
the number one team according to The athletic in the
twenty first century was the one Team duke Was Shane,
BATTIER J, Williams Mike dunleavy, Junior Carlos. Boozer that team
won Every March madness game by double. Digits it's hard
to argue with that duke. Team also considered was The

(13:00):
John wall twenty Ten kentucky. TEAM i think that's, underrated
but they didn't make the final. Four if they, do of,
COURSE i think they cracked the top twenty. FIVE i
think maybe their top ten if they crack the final.
Four but we all know what happened With West. Virginia
but that team Of Patterson, Cousins John Wall, BLEDSOE i

(13:21):
think deserved to be in this top twenty. Five but
again go to The athletic if you'd like to read
a little. More up, Next Molly Tuzzle Kentucky volleyball And
Scottie scheffler, says why are we doing? This why is
it so important that we win every? Week interesting. Comments
we're back in a minute at six THIRTY. Wlap welcome

(13:42):
back to The Big. Bluinsider coming, up my conversation from
earlier today With Wesley, woodyard the Former kentucky. Linebacker he's
got a charity organization set up for a golf tournament
coming up In august and he could use your. Help
it's going to be, fun it's.

Speaker 2 (13:56):
Gonna be a.

Speaker 1 (13:57):
Scramble we'll talk about that more in our next half.
Hour at the bottom of this, hour hour number Two Jeremy,
jarman the Former kentucky defensive, lineman and you've heard him
for the last few years on THE Uk radio, network
but he will talk with us About Mark stoop's, team
both passed and. Present so we'll talk a lot of
football coming. Up but this Was volleyball Media day and

(14:18):
we just Had Craig skinner on the show not too
long ago After kentucky was picked to win THE. Sec
so we thought we would share our conversation from today
With Molly. Tuzzo she's a, veteran she's a. Junior you,
know there's only one senior on this. Team that's pretty.
Amazing Molly tuzzo was a backup last year until her
about a third of the way into the season before

(14:39):
they PLAYED wku And Moorhead, state and she was inserted
By craig skinner into the lineup At, libroro and of
Course kentucky already had one of the best in the
conference In Eleanor, bevin But Molly tuzzo had beaten her
out for that. Position libro is the free substitution defensive,
player really important position in, volleyball And, bevan AS i,

(15:01):
said was one of the, best and she shifted over
to become the defensive specialists basically in the lineup when she,
played But tuzzo took over as liebro and they never
could get her out of the. Lineup she was so.
Good so she was one of the players who came
to media day today and we talk with her about
the fact That kentucky has been picked by an overwhelming

(15:22):
number of votes to win yet ANOTHER nc or RATHER sec.
Championship that will be nine straight for The wildcats and
they were.

Speaker 2 (15:29):
Picked to win ahead of The Texas.

Speaker 8 (15:31):
LONGHORNS i think it just kind of feels our fire
even more knowing that we always have a target on our.
Back it's a, lot BUT i think we kind of like,
it and it gives us like that edge to just
keep getting better and better and never settle or become.
Complacent SO i think we really enjoy kind of having
that target on our back and not letting them take
it FROM.

Speaker 3 (15:50):
Us.

Speaker 2 (15:52):
Champs you carry, THAT i.

Speaker 1 (15:53):
Mean, yeah but what's that?

Speaker 8 (15:55):
LIKE i, mean it's an. Honor it's. Great it's super
fun and exciting that we get to do that so
many years in a, row AND i think we're not done,
yet and we just want to keep getting them every
single year and eventually a national championship we're hoping for this.
Year BUT i think JUST i don't, know keeping that
title and getting.

Speaker 1 (16:13):
Done you, know obviously they've won a national highway, here so.

Speaker 4 (16:16):
That's not it's, doable right for?

Speaker 2 (16:19):
Sure what about that?

Speaker 8 (16:20):
GOAL i think it's a it's a hard thing to,
do but we're ready to do it this. Year and
we've already put in so much work and we've had
the great opportunity of getting all of our transfers and
freshmen in the spring in Early, january so we really
utilized that time to just grow closer to each other
and play for each. Other and this group is super
special and we all are so bought into each other

(16:40):
and the team THAT i think it's a super exciting
year for.

Speaker 1 (16:43):
Us you're inserted into the starting lineup last. Year AND
i know it's all about competition and, pragnice but tell
me about fighting your way in and then that's a
heck of a role that you will. Play, yes what
does that mean to?

Speaker 2 (16:57):
You and especially going into.

Speaker 9 (16:59):
THIS.

Speaker 8 (17:00):
I think it's it's a big role to fill and
it was tough at, first BUT i, THINK i don't,
know it's kind of my. Personality it's just competitive AND
i want to keep that role And i'm going to
do EVERYTHING i can to work harder and get better
SO i can obtain.

Speaker 2 (17:14):
That It's Bolly.

Speaker 1 (17:16):
Tezzo she's a junior from The, woodlands which is In Greater.
Houston they played great volleyball the club volleyball down In
texas and was a great get For Craig, skinner and
she is one of the players they'll be counting on
to win yet ANOTHER sec championship and make a run
at a second national. Title none of the kids on
This kentucky team was on that national championship. Team but

(17:40):
as we talked with him earlier, today knowing that this
program has won a national title means that they know it's.
Possible it's not just some abstract. Dream you know they
can go out compete for and win a national. Title
won't be, easy but they've got a good. Team they've
got some transfers coming, in including a kid Named Eva

(18:01):
hudson who led The Big ten last year and kills
per set At, purdue which is a college volleyball power women's.
Volleyball she averaged four point eight kills per. Set, folks
that's a, lot and she is transferred. In she was
the freshman of The year At purdue in twenty twenty.
Two she's been An All American All Big ten At.

(18:21):
Purdue as good as THE sec is at, volleyball and
it's getting better every. Year it's not the best, conference
it's arguably The Big. Ten and to get a player
who has one more year left out of a program
Like purdue to spend her last season In, kentucky that's
huge and so that'll be a big help for The.
Wildcats and of course you've Got Brooklyn delay. Already she

(18:43):
was player of The year and An All american last.

Speaker 2 (18:46):
Year for The.

Speaker 1 (18:47):
Wildcats so this should be a really, fun interesting year
if they can stay. Healthy for the Volleyball cats all about,
winning But Scotti, scheffler after winning The open made some
really interesting, comments and he sort of reiterated what he
had said after winning The Byron nelson and his home stomping,
grounds and he wondered aloud to the assembled media and basically,

(19:13):
asking why do we do? This you, know what is
it that drives us to? Win, win? Win because he,
said then you get there and you realize it's not
the be all and the end. All and here he
is obviously a professional, golfer but it could be any
athlete making these. Comments and here's part of What Scottie
scheffler said the other. Day AND i just thought this was.

Speaker 10 (19:35):
Fascinating it feels like you work your whole life to
celebrate winning a tournament for like a few minutes and
only lasts a few, minutes that kind of euphoric. Feeling
AND i like to win The Byron Nelson championship at.

Speaker 4 (19:47):
HOME i literally.

Speaker 10 (19:48):
Worked my entire life to become good at golf to
have an opportunity to win that. Tournament and you win,
it you, celebrate get to, hug hug my, Family my
sister's there at such an amazing, moment and then it's, like,
okay now what are we gonna eat for?

Speaker 5 (20:02):
Dinner you, know.

Speaker 7 (20:03):
Life goes on this.

Speaker 10 (20:07):
Is it great to be able to win tournaments and
to accomplish the THINGS i have in the game of. Golf,
YET i mean it brings tears my eyes just to
think about because it's literally worked my entire life to
become good at this. Sport and to have that kind
of sense of, ACCOMPLISHMENT i think is a pretty cool,
feeling you, know to get to live out your, dreams
it's very. Special but at the end of the, day it's,
Like i'm not out here to inspire the next generation of.

(20:28):
GOLFERS i Don't i'm not here to inspire somebody else
to be the best player in the, world because what's the?
Point you, know this is not a fulfilling. Life it's
it's fulfilling from the sense of, accomplishment but it's not
fulfilling from a sense of like the, deepest you, know
places of your.

Speaker 7 (20:44):
Heart you, know there's a lot of people that.

Speaker 10 (20:45):
Make it to what they thought was going to fulfill
them in, life and then you get, there and all
of a sudden you get to number one in the,
world and then they're.

Speaker 4 (20:51):
Like what's the?

Speaker 10 (20:52):
Point and you, KNOW i really do believe, that because you,
know what is the point you're, like why DO i
want to win this tournament so? Bad that's something THAT
i wrestle with on a daily. Basis it's like showing
up with The masters every. Year it's, like why DO
i want to win this golf tournament so? Badly why
DO i want to win The Open championship so? BADLY
i don't, know because IF i, win it's going to

(21:12):
be awesome for about two, minutes and then we're going
to get to the next week and it's gonna be, like,
hey you want two majors this? Year how important is
it for you to win the faxt? Coupleoffs and it's
just like we're back.

Speaker 7 (21:21):
Here, again you.

Speaker 1 (21:22):
Know and he emphasized he's not taking his career for,
Granted he's not taking golf for. Granted he loves, it
he loves the, work he loves the. Competition but he,
Said i'd rather be a great father if he had
to choose a great father to his, son then a great.
Golfer and he said when he goes to, work to

(21:42):
go out each day to practice when he's not even,
playing he, said his wife thanks him for the hard
work so he can provide for the. Family and he
said in, turn he thanks her for taking care of
their son when he's out traveling the world playing golf
and you, know thankfully winning big. Bucks BUT i just
thought that was an interesting comment to make from the

(22:03):
best golfer in the. World up, Next Wesley, woodyard one
of the best ever do it for the Football wildcats
here on six THIRTY Wlap welcome back to The Big
blue And. Sider coming up an hour number, Two Jeremy
jarman will join. Us the long Time kentucky defensive lineman
and AN nfl, veteran had a chance to chat and

(22:23):
talk football with another Former wildcat who is AN nfl veteran,
himself and That's Wesley. Woodyard we got together on The
Leech report earlier this.

Speaker 2 (22:31):
Morning WHEN i was sitting in For.

Speaker 1 (22:33):

is looking to sponsor a team himself led by a.

Speaker 1 (23:19):
Club wes has been doing work like this community work
ever since he was AT. Uk through his career with THE,
nfl he was three Times Walter Peyton man of The
year for both The broncos and The Tennessee, titans so
a total of six times that particular team named him
Their Walter Peyton.

Speaker 2 (23:38):
Man of The.

Speaker 1 (23:39):
Year another charity work he has done throughout his. Career
and after his career was over AND i had a
chance to talk To wes about just the young kids
he has helped throughout his, career when of course we
talked a lot of football as. Well how many times
has a young man who maybe is not quite as
young anymore come up to you and say you helped
me early in my.

Speaker 7 (23:59):
LIFE i got to think that happens once in a.

Speaker 9 (24:01):
While it's a it's one of the brightest. Spots you
know that that does.

Speaker 4 (24:07):
Happen.

Speaker 9 (24:07):
Uh you, know when you're doing work like, this you
know you're never trying to do it to get. Paid
you know you're never trying to really do it to
get any. Recognition but the but the best recognition to me,
is like you just, Said, dick is when a kid
comes up and, say, HEY i remember when you when
you came and did something at our, school OR i
remember when you gave us An Amazon, kindle OR i

(24:30):
remember WHEN i got my back back to school book
back from. You, uh that's an amazing. Feeling last NIGHT
i was doing some work with a kid and he
ran up to. Me he was, like, HEY i remember
you you missed a. Woodyard you and your YOUR mlb baseball.
Friend you guys came over and held a summer camp
for me and my.

Speaker 4 (24:49):
Classmates we enjoyed.

Speaker 9 (24:51):
It and that kid is now trying out for a
local high school here In. Florida so it's amazing to
get that love and respect and and and to know
that you're actually changing these young men and young woman's.

Speaker 1 (25:03):
Life that's. Awesome that's a great. STORY i got to
talk a little, football but first of, all was SAY
i wonder if your ears were burning a couple of weeks,
ago BECAUSE i was talking To Danny trevathan about, You
danny going into The Kentucky Pro Football hall Of, fame
you were inducted about eight years, ago and he talked
about just the effect that he you had on, him

(25:25):
a little bit younger than, you but he, said you,
know you were just a great leader and a great
influence on. Him and, he of course had a great
career in THE, nfl won a title with Your. Broncos
but you had to be happy for, HIM i. Know
and here's a guy, who like, YOU i think was
maybe an, underappreciated undervalued.

Speaker 4 (25:44):
Linebacker absolutely.

Speaker 9 (25:47):
Man me And, danny we we fit the same, mold
you know when, uh, well my senior class when we,
Graduated Danny danny's freshman class. Replacement AND i immediately you
got to talking to my linebacker coach at the, school
Coach Coach, smith And i'm, like, hey who's Who's who's

(26:08):
the linebackers THAT i.

Speaker 4 (26:09):
Got to look? For and he was, like you, Know
danny's this daddy. Kid he's pretty. GOOD i think he
plays a lot like. YOU i think he plays a
lot like. You WITH i was, like, wait hold, up,
coach nobody plays like. Me and he was, like, yeah
he runs around these flaws around just like.

Speaker 9 (26:25):
You SO i GOT i got to watching some of this.

Speaker 4 (26:29):
Film and you, know building.

Speaker 9 (26:30):
That relationship with, him and and and of course watching
him put up twenty some topics almost every. Week it
seemed like in the SEC i knew he was going
to be a good. Player actually mentioned him to my
coaches doing the draft In denver and was, like, MAN
i would love to get a chance to play With.
Danny and not that they listened to. Me of, course

(26:50):
they listened to their upper execs and, whatever but they
end up they ended up Drafting.

Speaker 4 (26:55):
Danny they you know they do, that dude did?

Speaker 9 (26:57):
It just had come by during the combine and asking
if you know about?

Speaker 4 (27:01):
Him SO i was on board With.

Speaker 9 (27:03):
Danny AND i always dreamed about playing with playing in
THE nfl with Any kentucky. LINEBACKER i had a chance
to play with Several kentucky linebackers that came, out And
danny was one of those guys.

Speaker 4 (27:17):
That, MAN i was, like you know, what this is
my little. Brother he's a linebacker From.

Speaker 9 (27:21):
Kentucky so ALL i know is if we ever get
a chance to play it on the same.

Speaker 4 (27:25):
Field we're about to do some, work and that's exactly
what we. Did, so, MAN i was so.

Speaker 9 (27:30):
Excited to Hear danny getting elected into The Kentucky hall Of.

Speaker 4 (27:33):
Fame he deserved. It great, leader.

Speaker 9 (27:37):
Amazing player for the, wildcast one of the best GUYS
i ever put on That blue.

Speaker 1 (27:42):
And, white, absolutely and he had this speed going for.
Him he was one of the fastest linebackers whoever played
At kentucky to the point where you were. Gone But
danny talked somehow talked to coaches into letting him return
a kick in The Blue white. Game you, know we're
all sitting, upstairs whyk on what in the, world you?
Know and he did, okay but then injured his wrists

(28:03):
in that, game and the coaches quickly said, no, no
they shut him. Down but but you, know he started playing,
linebacker and you did a little bit to that as.
Well when the position began to evolve and involved more
coverage and things like, that it became more of a
hybrid position that fit your skills set, too didn't.

Speaker 4 (28:21):
It that's that's. CORRECT i.

Speaker 9 (28:25):
WAS i was in one of those folky transitional stages
coming out of college as well as THE nfl, too
because the league was going to bigger's linebackers three four.
Defenses but there was something that nobody, expected tight ends
Like Jacob tammy that couldn't be covered because linebackers couldn't

(28:45):
run with. Him And i'll never forget my last day
at safety At. Kentucky we were playing covered two AND
i was half field. Safety we're running our, offenses running
the option played till MY i left on this beach
is the running.

Speaker 4 (29:02):
BACK i run, DOWN i hit.

Speaker 9 (29:04):
The, quarterback he flits the ball To. ARTIST i get,
up go Tackle artist for a, loss And i'm getting.
Hype i'm talking About oh, yeah look at.

Speaker 4 (29:12):
THAT i was like.

Speaker 9 (29:14):
Man Coach brown And Coach archer ran up to me
and was, like what are you, Doing, like we don't
need a safety making a tackle in the backfield and
cover two you're going you're moving the.

Speaker 4 (29:25):
LINEBACKERS i didn't TAKE i didn't take that.

Speaker 9 (29:31):
Serious BUT i was, like, dang they might move me to,
linebacker and lord. BEHOLD i go Into Coach brooks office
like a week in the, season, like, hey you, KNOW
i want to play, linebacker and that's what he looked
at me.

Speaker 4 (29:44):
Too and he was, like, YEAH i think we're going
to move you the linebacker. Too don't, Worry, Aboudy you'll
be playing a. Linebacker it was a right decision for.

Speaker 8 (29:52):
Me.

Speaker 9 (29:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (29:53):
Absolutely it changed your life and it changed the trajectory
at The kentucky football.

Speaker 7 (29:57):
Program And i'm glad you brought Up RICH. Brooksf we
just have a couple of minut.

Speaker 1 (30:00):
Left but there are three photos of you on the
poster for your golf, tournament one with The, broncos one
with The. Titans but YOUR uk, Photo, wesley is you
Hugging Rich. BROOKS i think that's after The Music City
bowl win one of. Them and you had such a
great relationship With Rich brooks at the point where you
either one who went To Mitch barnard and said we're

(30:21):
going to get this thing turned around Under Rich. Brooks
and you certainly did tell me about your relationship with,
him because, again he's a guy like you wasn't appreciated
nearly enough till he was.

Speaker 9 (30:32):
Gone uh, yeah, man main Coach. Bruce we have a
great relationship from day. ONE a true soul man of
what a man should. Be as far as somebody that's
trying to become a, man And i'll never. Forget WHEN
i came up there on my, visit he looked at
me and he was, like you're one of the guys that.

Speaker 4 (30:53):
We need to turn this program. Around And i've never
really had. Anybody you, know when you go.

Speaker 9 (31:00):
The recruited trips you're going, to it's just Another it's
just another. Guy you, know you walk, around you know
there's way bigger, players you, know guys that have four
or five.

Speaker 4 (31:09):
Stars.

Speaker 9 (31:10):
Uh but when he what he said he sawing to
me when on my, visit that just stuck with, Me, Like,
MAN i want to come here AND i want to
help change the program. AROUND i want to help Put
kentucky football on the map and make a legacy for this.
Program AND i was able to do that with with
my my, rookie my freshman class coming in and some
of the guys that was there as well bought in full.

(31:32):
Speed but, man from day, One Coach brooks had an
open door, policy AND i think that's all you can.
Respect as a young man coming into, college you're away
from your. Family you need to find somebody that you
can trust and rely. On so these college, COACHES i,
know they're in a in a a in a shaky
world now with nil and players voices are way powerful

(31:53):
now than they were back.

Speaker 4 (31:54):
Then but, man you gotta love.

Speaker 9 (31:56):
It you got your players have to feel that love
that you have for the.

Speaker 4 (32:00):
Game.

Speaker 9 (32:00):
Still, YEAH i, know it went from we're expecting to
have you four years in night campus. Too now it
could be one year to two years while you're. Here
let's maximize. That let's get the best for, you because
at the end of the, day it is all about our.

Speaker 4 (32:15):
Kids you.

Speaker 9 (32:15):
Know The university Of kentucky comes first in aspects and certain,
aspects but even more than, that The university Of kentucky
can't BE uk unless you have those star studied athletes
coming and leaving their homes and believing In kentucky. Football
and that's what it's. About Coach steukes has it on
the right. Track very proud of. Him still Love coach

(32:38):
Stews man and looking forward to seeing what they do
this year on the.

Speaker 7 (32:40):
Field, wesley thank you so.

Speaker 1 (32:42):
Much we'll keep plugging your, tournament but best of luck to.
You thanks for joining us this. Morning always a pleasure
chatting with.

Speaker 9 (32:47):
You all, right, MAN i see you guys soon this
year as we'll get ready to win THE sec.

Speaker 7 (32:53):
Championship that'd be loo have a good day.

Speaker 6 (32:58):
You taking.

Speaker 2 (32:58):
It That's wesley Wood Yard.

Speaker 1 (33:00):
Ard he AND i chatted this morning on The Leash
report AS i sat in for the vacationing voice of The.
Wildcats but, truly he is one of my all time
Favorite kentucky. Players he was a safety coming out of high.
School he was a talented, player two Time All stater
And Georgia player of The year in his respective. Classification

(33:20):
At georgia led his team to back to back state.
Titles they were fifty one to three in two years
And kentucky beat out whatever other. SCHOOLS i don't know
how hotly he was recruited by other. Schools he's not
the fastest. Guy but when they moved him to linebacker,
man his world changed and The wildcats football fortunes changed as.

(33:41):
Well in my Favorite Wesley woodyard, story and you may
have heard it, before came in twenty five When kentucky
was really. Struggling Rich brooks was under, fire which was.
Predictable the struggles of that team was entirely predictable because
five was the year that was kind of the tar.
Year that's when THE nca penalties That kentucky incurred because

(34:04):
of what happened Under Hell. Mummy that's when the penalties
would really really take. Hold that reduced scholarship, numbers that
reduced scholarship, visits allowed things like. That those were all
designed to cripple the, program to punish a, program and
it had the effect that one would. Expect plus that,
Year kentucky lost a lot of close games and lost

(34:25):
a lot of players to. Injury after that year, postseason
in the, offseason thirty five surgeries On kentucky, players not
thirty five separate teams because some guys said two and three,
surgeries but a total of thirty five postseason operations On
kentucky football, players and it certainly had a detrimental effect

(34:46):
on the team that. Year but during that, season after
one of those tough, losses, Postgame Wesley woodyard Grabbed Rich
brooks and put an arm around him and, said, coach
we're going to get this thing turned. Around And Mitch
barnard was privy to, that and that was the final
thing that convinced him that they're going in the right
direction because he was under. Fire get rid Of, Brooks

(35:07):
Ditch rich And mitch all that. Stuff But Wesley woodyard
led the way with the players on and off the,
field And i'll never forget watching him and his teammates
celebrate the following season The Music City bowl down In.
Nashville and whenever people talk about getting rid of bowl,
games and some bowl games probably should be, vanquished BUT

(35:29):
i think about the sheer joy and celebration that followed
that game that upset went Over clemson led By Wesley
woodyard and.

Speaker 2 (35:37):
Others SO i.

Speaker 1 (35:39):
Love talking, football as you can tell With Wellsley. WOODYARD
i love talking volleyball as. Well we'll do that on
the other side of the break here on six THIRTY.
Wlap welcome back to The Big Blue, insider thanks again
To Wesley. Woodyard coming up in our next, Hour Jeremy,
jarman another Ex wildcat who played With Wesley. Woodyard we'll
join us and we'll talk about The, wildcats what they've

(36:01):
got coming, up what they have in the rearview mirror
that's kind of sets up this. Season so we'll talk
a lot of football with double j's and a, reminder
if you want to get a sneak preview of the Football,
cats it's coming up Fast, Saturday august the SECOND Uk

an eye On twitter and on the WEBSITE uk athletics

(37:08):
dot com prior to leaving your. House and if they
have to move it, indoors they will not open the
doors to the.

Speaker 2 (37:15):
Public they just.

Speaker 1 (37:16):
Can't handle a crowd like that in the indoor.

Speaker 2 (37:19):
Facility so if.

Speaker 1 (37:21):
Whether ahead of the event or during the, event washes it,
out you're not gonna be able to follow the team.
Inside so just be aware of that before we hit The,
BRAKE i wanted to share with you this is a
heck of a Story Philly's Red sox last. Night now
you know what a walkoff, is, RIGHT a base, hit
a home, run, whatever that decides the. Game and as

(37:44):
the winning team in the bottom of that, inning whatever
the inning, is, celebrates the other team is walking off the. Field,
Right that's why it's called a walk. Off, well last,
night bases, loaded bottom of the tenth two two ball,
Game phillies at the. Plate Boston Red sox Catcher Carlos

(38:07):
narvaez was called for interference with bases. Loaded that meant
the runner on third comes.

Speaker 2 (38:14):
Home game. Over the game ended.

Speaker 1 (38:19):
On catcher's, interference a walk. Off it was the first
time since nineteen seventy one that happened in a big league.
Game it was a one to two count and the
pitch was ruled a. Ball phillies appealed, it they reviewed,
it and sure, enough catchers. Interference game. Over heck of

(38:40):
a way to lose the, game heck of a way
to win a. Game that's baseball coming, up and our number,
Two Jeremy, jarman the Former kentucky defensive end AND nfl
vetteran we'll talk About Mark stut's ball, club what he
hopes to, see what he's been. Saying that's all ahead
here on The Big Blue sider six point. Thirty nobody.

Speaker 6 (39:17):
Taken Do.

Speaker 2 (40:48):
Welcome back to The Big Blue.

Speaker 1 (40:49):
Sider joining us now is a longtime friend of the
show and a longtime friend of, mine a Former kentucky defensive,
lineman Mister Jeremy, jarman and we love talking football with DOUBLE.
J are you excited about this coming, Year, jeremy because
this this is the pendulum swinging in the enter direction
For Mark stoops right. Now it's kind of a curious,

(41:09):
time isn't.

Speaker 5 (41:10):
It, yeah it, Is and of Course i'm, Excited. GABE i, mean,
uh you, Know i'll View i'll view football football stairtys
in The south, holidays can see friends and, family you,
know during you, know during these Seven satury days that
aren't promised to. Us So i'm looking forward to seeing,
you seeing the, fans Seeing Mark stoops in this football.

Speaker 1 (41:31):
Team this is the time of year, when for many many,
years a guy like, you well you, specifically would start
to physically and mentally get ready for what you players
called camp and then look into the. Season do you
still get that itch at this time of. Year you've
been away from the game for a, while but does
it still kind of creep up on?

Speaker 9 (41:51):
You it?

Speaker 5 (41:53):
DOES i still get, It and for, ME i get
it from just the. Storylines, yeah you, know the, day
The david and type. Mentality i'm the kind of Guy
i've always viewed myself as an underdog with a lot to.
Prove and you, Know Mark, STOOPS i think he's cut
from a very similar. Claw and his football, teams especially

(42:13):
the really good ones that's been their mentality is so for,
me just like the, FANS i want to SEE i
want to see how this football team and how these,
coaches how they perceive themselves coming out OF sec media
days where you, know some people were picking them dead
last and others next to the.

Speaker 1 (42:32):
Last, yeah and you know we had seen that way
back in the.

Speaker 2 (42:37):
Day and really.

Speaker 1 (42:37):
Actually when When stoops first got here and the program
was was on a real. Downturn and, then of, course
and AS i said this To mark and has sit
in on the, show during his tenure At, kentucky he's
been the new. Guy he's been the guy trying to
build a, program trying to coach football at the quote
unquot basketball. School then all of a sudden he's the

(42:59):
darling for co which In kentucky to ten wins and
competing for An Eastern division. Title and now you, know
it's kind of swung back the other, way hasn't?

Speaker 5 (43:08):
It, yeah it, Has and THAT'S i, mean there's nothing
unfair or unreasonable about. That you've seen a guy that's
been as you, know he had a stretch where he
was strength. Successful, yeah a couple of ten wins seasons,
there and a lot of a lot OF nfl draft,

(43:28):
picks some guys that set records here at The university
Of kentucky and in THE. SEC i, mean some really
good football players and coaches as well that have come
through here to have left their mark on this. Program
as coach's just ready for thirteenth.

Speaker 1 (43:44):
Season you mentioned the underdog, role and Certainly stoops his
best teams have been like, that and that's that Old
youngstown blue collar work ethic coming out of. Him But i'm,
WONDERING i was thinking about this earlier, Today. Jeremy they've
got so many new faces on that. Team when you
figure in the freshman with the transfer, portal you've got

(44:04):
almost fifty new, guys how tough do you think it's
going to be for? Him and you guys had a
little bit of that goal when you were playing Under Rich,
Brooks but you, know can you effectively do you think
do that when you have so many, faces so many
of these guys weren't here last, year han't been there
for you, know a couple three.

Speaker 5 (44:24):
Years, yeah that's what makes the evaluation process so. Important
and it's multi. Fascivus you, KNOW i don't think a
lot of people really talk about. That you have your
front office people. There, uh they're you're you, Know chase
and his team that they scout for. Talent and then

(44:44):
the role of the assistant coaches and the head coaches
and the support people are are to not only support,
that but support that with the other kind of data
that you can get from, parents from the, community from
high school, coaches from, teachers to really be able to
assess the character and whether the players that you're bringing in,
here whether they're, accountable whether they're, dependable whether they view

(45:08):
football as a tool or as a, game or as
a future job or combination. Thereof but these these these,
coaches the, job their job is to assessed these guys
characters to know if they truly want to be football
players or or if they're preoccupied with other things in
football is just you, know it's just something else that

(45:30):
they do while they're on, campus and that's. Important AND
i think when you look when you look at the
job That Mark pope did in year, one, YEAH i
see a guy that is evaluating the full person and
AND i think that that's an aspect that we have
to get back to as understanding the character of the

(45:51):
guys that we're bringing into the.

Speaker 1 (45:53):
Program you, know it's funny that you mentioned that BECAUSE
i talked to a basketball coach about the exact same
thing about how you really you got to build a
network of, contacts people you can call and lean on and, say,
hey what about this?

Speaker 2 (46:07):
Kid should be straight on this?

Speaker 1 (46:08):
Kid and you know who's also done a great job
of lady Is nick Minjee on the baseball coach At
kentucky really taking good advantage of the. Portal but you,
know it's it's so much more than just what happens
on the, field isn't. It it's the locker, room it's
the dorm or an apartment you're, sharing the weight room,
especially isn't it that's where things come.

Speaker 5 (46:29):
Together the weight, room the, classroom every room away from
the field is. Important AND i think one of the
things that really sticks out to me, is you, know
being at The hall Of fame banquet last year and
just listening to THE Uk hall Of fame bank and
listen listening To sydney and listen to some you Know

(46:50):
Corey peters listening to that, group not they, meat just
talk about how tough it was to be a student,
athlete and be a student athlete that high. Level, Uh
it's extremely hard to go out on the field and
make plays week in and week out in the greatest
conference in all of collegiate. Sports and there's so much

(47:12):
that is coming at, you so many expectations gave that
aren't there even as a professional, athlete you, know there
are aspects of being a collegiate athlete that are just.
Grueling AND i just take my head. OFF i know
that that sounds, cliche But i'm just always in awe
WHEN i get a chance, to you, know to fellowship

(47:34):
through THE K, club through other organizations with former letter
winners that have done this at an extremely high, level
just to pick their brain and just talk about talk
about the journey in the. Past and you, know for
a lot of, people you get in and it's easy
to drop the. Rope it's easy to get distracted with other.
Things it's easy to, say you know what like, this
you know this, Balance it's just it's too much and

(47:57):
you have to find those gritty keys it. That they're
just junkies for. It they love, it they love being
in the. Building and part of that is is making
sure you got the right people in the building from
the coaching, staff support, personnel but also most importantly their.

Speaker 1 (48:12):
Teammates, well speaking of the staff and the people in the,
building of, Course Vince merrill has moved. ALONG i don't
know that you AND i have chat and we've texted
back and. Forth but what was your reaction when you
heard That vince was not so much leaving but going To.
LOUISVILLE i think it was at some, point you, know
you had to figure somebody who was going to pluck

(48:32):
him away From, kentucky but to go To.

Speaker 2 (48:34):
LOUISVILLE i, mean what was your?

Speaker 5 (48:35):
Response, yeah not happy about. IT i mean there's been
a little too much, contamination you know here in the
last few seasons with, uh you, know with some people
going from going from The kentucky side to The louisville,
side and but all in, ALL i love then appreciative
of everything that he's done for THE uk, program for the,

(48:58):
brand the things behind the things that a lot of
people don't point out as. Well it's somebody that's been
that's that's very that's been integrated into The KENTUCKY. Dna
and even though he's taking off the polo and going
TO u OF, l you, know he's a guy that's
going to have relationships that that that stand that course
and he'll be able to pick up the phone and

(49:18):
keep in contact obviously with guys BECAUSE i mean he
has these twelve twelve years of relationships you know as,
well you know with The kentucky logo. On but you,
know from a football, Perspective i'm curious to see what
happens to that room because we always talk about the
tight end room and there's a guy in that room

(49:39):
That Willie. Rodriguez he's a guy that is very special
AND i want to see him take the next step
and uh And i'm excited to see his progress and
how bush him to integrate him into the offense because
he has to be involved in, it blocking, passing because
he is a very special.

Speaker 1 (49:59):
Athlete, yeah you, know and he's not the only guy
in that, Room Josh. Caatis you, know as a senior's
played a lot of. Football but, yeah they's just something
about this. Kid what is it you really like About.

Speaker 5 (50:09):
RODRIGUEZ i like his, LINK i like his. TWITCH i,
like you, know the length of his. STRIDE i like
the fact that despite being a, long tall, athlete that
he's very nimble and. Shifty AND i think he's the
STEP i think HE'S i think his speed is. DECEPTIVE
i don't know what the numbers, are but to, me

(50:29):
he looks like a guy that's a step faster than
the average tight END uh in this. League AND i
want to see him matched up in some one on
one situations this fall because so he can win. THEM
i know he can win. THEM i know that he
can go up top as well and jump and catch
the ball at his highest. Point And i'm expecting a

(50:49):
big year for.

Speaker 1 (50:50):
HIM i like his toughness And stoops started talking about
that last year at one, point and he got kind
of this wistful look in his, eye, like you, know
this is my kind of, guy and that comes in
hand to you tight end if they can send them
out on. Routes BUT i, Wonder, jeremy is this old
line we can talk more about. This let's let's do.

(51:12):
That let's talk on the other side of the break
about the old, line because so, often as you, know
they had to keep the tight end in to chip
a little bit and help the old. Line so let's
let's let's take a break and talk more about the
old line on the other side With Jeremy jarman here
on the big one side or six THIRTY, wlp welcome.
Back we're talking With Jeremy, jarman Former kentucky defensive. Lineman
you've heard him on the radio and ON. Tv you've

(51:34):
heard him ready. Quoted he has become a very sage
wise veteran old. Man he's still a very young. Man
but we turned To jeremy for football knowledge and we
were talking about the old of the old line prior
to the break totally. Rebuilt will they be good enough
do you think to allow the tight ends to go

(51:56):
out and catch?

Speaker 2 (51:57):
Passes.

Speaker 5 (52:00):
GAVE i, mean that's a great, question and unfortunately that's
not one that we're going to know the answer. TO
i don't think until all. DISTARTED i think you'll have
a really good idea And i'd like to SEE i
think the things that they'll be looking for is just
to see how those guys do getting out in. Space you.
KNOW i think that that was an area WHERE i

(52:20):
was just really surprised to see maybe some guys just
maybe lose some flexibility or put on some weight and
they weren't as maybe. Quick you know our tackle cock last,
year like out in, space the ability to get out
there and just get a chip, on get a chip
on the linebacker on the, train be able to put
your foot in the, ground REDIRECT i thought our screen.

(52:43):
GAME i thought our screen game last year really it
really affected the ability to really do some quick hitting.
Things and that's an area where if they're able to improve,
there able to get the guards out in space to
get up on the next, level will get out LIKE
i said in the, scring and that opens a lot

(53:03):
of things up that slows to pass us down and
we need to be able to do that at this fall.

Speaker 1 (53:10):
Well second year under bush hand. Down do you think
we'll see more stuff like that within this.

Speaker 5 (53:15):
OFFENSE i think it depends on the. PERSONNEL i go
back AND i, look and you, KNOW i talk about
the offensive, line but it's also the. RECEIVERS i. THINK
i think that there's times that the receivers really let
let each other, down not being able to block on
the edges with some of the quick hitting screens out
there at the short passing, game not being able to

(53:37):
stay on the blocks with with with corners and. Safety
so when you have that combination where you where you
can't run you can't run wide receiver screens and you
can't run running back screens because of combination of the
inability to get defensive backs as well as linebacks blocked

(53:57):
in the screen. Game, man that's a bad. Combination that
is a horrible combination for a quarterback because those are
the kind of plays that you run typically to slow
down the pass for, us but also to get your
quarterback in the. Rhythm, yeah and that's very tough to
be a quarterback and inexperiences to see quarterback without the

(54:17):
ability to be able to pick up some first downs
with short passing.

Speaker 1 (54:21):
Games, well it looks like Cal zada will be the,
starter but even if he's, not it'll be another new
quarterback taking a snap on opening, day you, know and
we can we can tell that story going all the
way back To Drew barker's injury as to why it's
it's kind of been a revolving door AT. Qb you,
know not every. YEAR i, mean you, Know Terry wilson

(54:43):
started multiple, Years Stephen johnson did, too but it's been so,
Long jeremy since they could since they signed a quarterback
and developed him into the STARTING. Qb but that almost
seems like business as usual now using the portal for
A qb in The south.

Speaker 2 (55:00):
At The Eastern.

Speaker 1 (55:00):
Conference is that something fans should even concern themselves.

Speaker 5 (55:04):
ABOUT i mean that that's a tough one BECAUSE i
think that there's there's different philosophies there at the quarterback.
POSITION i think everybody likes to see uh the N state,
guy homegrown kids grow into that growing to that, spot.
Right BUT i think now with the with the with

(55:24):
the makeup of in the rules and, regulation now with
the N c DOUB, a you have an opportunity every
year to put to put the best quarterback that you.
Can you know that anywhere in the country playing on
uh different LEVELS d, one two, three n ai uh
on some juco to be able to find one or

(55:46):
two guys to be able to integrate into your. Offense
AND i think that you owe it to your fan
base to make sure that you go out and that
you bring in someone that can, compete, uh that can
compete for that. Spot and you, know this quarterback By christian,
model it's over and it's never coming back. Again.

Speaker 1 (56:04):
Yeah, well you, KNOW i look back last year And
Rock vandergriff and here's a guy by the end of
the year essentially retired from. Football you rarely hear a
college player say, that but he was so beaten up
by the end of the. Year But, JEREMIAH i looked,
BACK i watched that Entire kentucky own miss game On

(56:27):
Kentucky takeover down THE sec, network and of COURSE i
was down there working for radio field side watching that
incredible game. Unfold and then remember the week prior to
damn near Beat. Georgia so for two weeks, Running kentucky
played as well as any team In, america And vandergriff
was a big part of, that you. Know and then

(56:49):
when things began to go, bad and there were a
lot of, reasons BUT i think it's a reminder that
YOUR qb is only as good as the guy's walking
for him, right.

Speaker 5 (57:00):
Absolutely when you watch That georgia. Game WHEN i watched
That georgia, game there was two plays that were called
there late in that game and that last drive that
we had that would have been first downs and were
lining up with arguably the best best field goal kicker
In kentucky football history with the go ahead you, know

(57:21):
with the go ahead, wins and the inability to block
on those two consecutive plays really Costs, brock really cost
the football team because you Beat georgia, there man in that.
Spot you, KNOW i think at that, POINT i think
you got a situation where anybody in the locker room

(57:42):
that may have been wavering a little, bit just a
little bit on the. FENCE i think from, THERE i
think that you just see the sellout just go to
an entirely different.

Speaker 4 (57:52):
Level.

Speaker 5 (57:53):
Yeah, Uh and it, was it, was and it was
a you, know it's definitely a missed. Opportunity, Uh but
they Had georgia Beat there's no. DOUBT i, Mean i've
broken that down in the film, room AND i thought
that those two plays there in that last tew were
excellent caused By bush and just couldn't just couldn't get
the ball.

Speaker 4 (58:11):
Off, yeah it was just.

Speaker 1 (58:12):
Unfortunate it would have changed the face of college.

Speaker 2 (58:15):
Football that's where we.

Speaker 1 (58:17):
Are these, days you, know when when a team Like
georgia is upset like. THAT i mean Maybe georgia goes
on to do great, things but it would have really
Really and then The Old miss loss To, kentucky that
that damaged The rebels that. Year but you go back
and look at that, game that That Old miss. Game,
yeah The wildcats got some, breaks they made some. Breaks

(58:40):
Old miss was. Penalized kentucky did not protect the quarterback
WELL i THINK i Think brock was sacked five or six.
Times yet he stands in and makes that deep throat
To berry In brown which will be remembered as one
of the biggest plays IN uk. History you.

Speaker 5 (58:55):
Know, yeah that was a Beautiful that was a beautiful
play execution. There AND i like to think back to
the two years before with you, know With levice down,
there with the you, know or two years and the
opportunity there with just a couple of those those go.
ROUTES i think they were go. Routes they were deep

(59:17):
balls that were just overthrown and they were, missive uh
to bury on so to see to see that kind
of come full, circle uh and See berry and be
involved with helping us defeat The. REBELS i think that
that will be something that, uh you know that we'll
remember that will be definitely part of this, legacy as
well as being one of the most prolific kickoff returners

(59:38):
in college football.

Speaker 1 (59:39):
History so how much does it hurt them that he's
now AN l S U?

Speaker 2 (59:42):
Tiger?

Speaker 5 (59:44):
WOW i mean losing a guy that can that, can
that can score anytime he gets the, football whether that's
on punk kickoff return or or on a deep, ball
or a guy that has to be honored because of
the seat where he's not gonna get a lot of
maybe one on one match. Up there's always going to
be a safety that you, know there's playing cloud playing

(01:00:05):
the top.

Speaker 4 (01:00:06):
There.

Speaker 5 (01:00:06):
Yeah, yeah losing a guy like that hurts, you even
if he wasn't as consistent of a route runner and
as a pass catcher as you had hoped that he
would have been in his junior.

Speaker 1 (01:00:16):
Campaign BUT i do think there is talent in that,
room and now you may see some guys you, know
up their game a little.

Speaker 2 (01:00:23):
BIT i fully expect.

Speaker 5 (01:00:24):
THAT i think so. TOO i think that those guys
in that. Room first of, ALL i think that THEY'RE
i think it's a well coached, group AND i think
that those guys have a lot to. Prove, uh they've
been successful being able to get into you, know get
into the to the portal and get a little bit
of help. There And i'm just. Curious i'm really, intrigued you,

(01:00:46):
know to see, law but also to see to See
macklin in this upcoming season as, well to see how he's.
Utilized he's a guy that just seen you, know when
he caught the touchdown path Against. Tennessee he was a
guy you know that kind of just seemed like a you,
know like a relief, celebration, like, yeah this is like

(01:01:09):
this is WHAT i can do type you know type
celebration and, uh you know him being on the outside,
there so but Getting gilmore back that's, huge being able
to repatriate him from, uh From.

Speaker 4 (01:01:23):
Nebraska.

Speaker 5 (01:01:25):
Uh he was a guy that this staff has been
high on and he's a well liked guy in that locker.
Room SO i, think all in, ALL i think that
that's a good. GROUP i think it's really solid and,
uh you know you Mentioned calasada. Earlier Calasada calzada is
a special guy to, me just, because for the most,
part you know who he is from an average, perspective you,

(01:01:48):
know just you, know top to. Bottom but anytime a
guy had played a, dragon that's, right he never he
never forgets. That, yeah, yeah you. Don't you don't forget.
That you don't forget what you, know how that's. Done
And i'd like to think that that guy's got some
more football less than, him and he's got another dragon

(01:02:10):
or a few to slay this.

Speaker 1 (01:02:12):
Season, Okay zach kels outa dragon.

Speaker 2 (01:02:16):
SLAYER i like.

Speaker 1 (01:02:16):
That we're talking To Jeremy jarmer and we'll talk about
the defense in just a minute here on The Big
Moon side or six thirty Wlap welcome. Back we're talking
To Jeremy, jarman who played defensive line in college and the.
Pro so let's talk about THE d line Of. Kentucky
AND i asked a couple of questions Of Mark stoops
down In, atlanta and one of them involved the, defense

(01:02:37):
and he ended up talking at length about the. Depth,
Now jeremy AT d, line he felt, LIKE i think
what it was WAS i asked him, about you know that
period where they played so well Against georgia And Ole,
miss but just couldn't quite hang on to that level of.
Play and he talked about all the. Injuries he, SAID
i didn't want to bring it up last year during
the season go to sounded like, excuses but he did

(01:02:57):
remind us AND i know you remember the rash of
injuries in the spring and then in the summer going
in a thin they. Were and he said one of
the things he really likes about the d line thanks
to the portal and, recruiting is they have bodies. Now
they do have more, depth even though there are question
marks because this is an area that's been so strong

(01:03:18):
through the.

Speaker 2 (01:03:18):
Years as you.

Speaker 1 (01:03:19):
Know now there are some question, marks but they do have,
numbers which you got to have at that, position don't.

Speaker 5 (01:03:25):
You, yeah for, Sure AND i THINK i think they
probably feel really good about that. Projected you, know first
group of. Starters when you look At Khalil, sounders who's
what a fifth year, Guy he's been a dependable football
player for. You you Get Josiah hayes back there at

(01:03:46):
that nose, position you know how much he's able to compete.
There you know With David gusta god that they seem
to be really high On, Yeah AND i Think Humphrey
grace he's another guy that you, know you've heard some
things about as well this. Offseason and, obviously, uh you
Know Jared smith being in the mix uh there as,

(01:04:10):
well And Jaydon williams and WHOM i, missed AND i
know that there's some other guys. There but you, KNOW i,
think you.

Speaker 4 (01:04:18):
Know Brian.

Speaker 5 (01:04:18):
Robinson i'd like to think he's a guy that's probably
gotten a little bit a little bit bigger as, well
and really want to see what kind of fall that
he that he's going to. Have but a war is
a fantastic defensive line. Coach he's you, know he produces really,
sound technically sound defensive. Linement So i'm really curious to

(01:04:39):
see what he's going to be able to get out
of this.

Speaker 1 (01:04:41):
Group it's interesting you Mentioned David gusta because the three
players who came With stoops TO sec media, days uh
two on, defense one on, Offense acadas he brought The
jordan Love it And, alexafari all three of them Mentioned
gusta and all of them made reference to the weight

(01:05:02):
Room you mentioned a weight room, earlier and they all
mentioned the fact that he is such a be thirty
seven reps at two twenty.

Speaker 2 (01:05:10):
FIVE i think that was a Good.

Speaker 1 (01:05:12):
Yeah, Yeah Jeff pigre on the same, Respect jeff SAID.

Speaker 2 (01:05:15):
I could do.

Speaker 1 (01:05:16):
FOUR i don't know how many of you, did but
apparently thirty seven is pretty. Good Uh, So, yeah that's
that's somebody who's who's already gained a following among his.

Speaker 2 (01:05:27):
Teammates and that's, big isn't.

Speaker 5 (01:05:28):
It, yeah that that type of strength is the elite
strength uh there at the defensive line. Position so but you,
know there's been a lot of strong guys who have you,
know who have you, know come out and played football
and not been as successful as they would have. Liked
not to say that That's, david but that's an important
part of. It that's a huge part of. IT a

(01:05:50):
guy that's able to get in the weight. Room AND
i think when you add a guy like that to the,
fold that's eye opening for the other. Guys, yeah to
see someone come in that has that kind of uh you,
know has those type of strength. LEVELS i mean that
kind of comes in and resets the that resets the

(01:06:10):
the flora and the, aquarium you, know where you had
a guy that that that thought that he was you,
know his thirty reps were really. Good and then you
got a guy that comes in and he's starty, seven
he's got tremendous work. Ethic so you, know that's the
important piece of making sure when you're going out and
you're hitting, him that you're hitting the, portal that you're
getting the right. Guy, yeah that you're getting you know

(01:06:33):
that you're getting as complete a guys as you can.
Get and it sounds like that they really like this
kid a, lot And i'm excited to see.

Speaker 1 (01:06:40):
Him, well his teammates are just as excited as you,
are and they've been seeing him in. There we're talking
To Jeremy, jarman Former kentucky defensive, Lineman All conference PERFORMER
nfl veteran about the Upcoming wildcats And, uh it's it's
the Time, jeremy where with guys coming through the portal
you were talking about. Evaluation, uh you've really got.

Speaker 2 (01:07:02):
To be able to lean on.

Speaker 1 (01:07:04):
People you know in the business and you know a
lot of, people but if a guy is coming through the,
portal you, know you want to know what kind of
guy he what kind of teammates you're going to be
that sort of, Thing AND i think that stupents all
but admitted that they kind of fell down in that
area and the last couple of years they got they're,
gonna he, said do a much better. Job he believes

(01:07:24):
they've done a better job of evaluating, people which is so,
vital isn't?

Speaker 5 (01:07:29):
It it is. Vital i'd be curious that Just i'd
be curious to know a little bit more about. That
and you know what that is, entailed because you, know
getting a dossier on a on a prospect and getting
a complete one that's sup THAT'S i, mean that's that's very.
Important AND i think SOME nfl teams do that better than.

(01:07:50):
Others and that's the reason why SOME nfl teams consistently
get better results than THE nfl teams because the rosters
are very similar and, talent but the results On sundays
they you, know some teams tend to be a little
bit more consistent in that. CATEGORY i, mean so when

(01:08:11):
we talk about, character we talk about team, building and
we talk about trying to trying to stimulate adversity and
trying to trying to see how guys respond to. That
you go and you get a player and he comes
from a program where they're used to winning every single.
Week what happens to his character when you lose two

(01:08:31):
in a? Row you, know what happens to a? Guy
what happens to a guy's character who's used to, playing you,
know used to being on bad. Teams and he's a
really good, player but he wasn't a, captain you, know
on this really bad. Team and you start winning or
he starts having individual, successes how does he handle? That

(01:08:51):
there's so many different dynamics that play in a locker
room when you bring in players and you're trying to
evaluate it and you're trying to find that right fit
that you that you tried that and you can't get
the answers to, everything but you got to get a
good understanding for who these guys are and what their
support system outside of the football what that outside of

(01:09:14):
the football, field what that looked?

Speaker 2 (01:09:15):
Like that's?

Speaker 1 (01:09:16):
Right you, know who are these? Guys and to that,
END i really wonder you've told the story more than
once about that loss down AT lsu in twenty oh
six that, really in a backhanded, way turned the season.
Around it was it was the worst game in The
Rich brooks eraic quite, FRANKLY i, think and you question

(01:09:39):
yourself before you united off to sleep.

Speaker 2 (01:09:42):
On that team.

Speaker 1 (01:09:42):
Plane AND i got to, wondering and then everything turned,
around you know the. Rest but you got to wonder
how many of these guys that were still on This
kentucky team from last year had the same kind of
conversation with, themselves you know WHAT i?

Speaker 5 (01:09:57):
Mean, NOW i, agree and you, know for the most,
PART i, mean you, know stuff like that is stuff like.
That those are pretty deep conversations. Having you, know quite,
HONESTLY i don't know how many people really want to
really feel comfortable talking out loud about about some of those.
Things but the guys that, do the guys that use

(01:10:18):
that as, fuel the guys that are truly embarrassed by
those things and use those things as as motivation during the.
OFFSEASON i mean, THAT i, mean that's What that's what this.

Speaker 1 (01:10:31):
Is, yeah, YEAH.

Speaker 5 (01:10:32):
I mean that is what this. IS i, mean you,
know there's things that happen on the football field down
AT lsu and some other places where you're just Not
you're not happy with the, result you're not happy with
your individual, performance and you have to be willing to
look at your teammates and your coaches and Say i'm
going to learn from. This i'm going to be a better.
Player i'm going to stop making these mistakes BECAUSE i.

(01:10:54):
Care you, KNOW i care about my, LEGACY i care
about my last. NAME i care about this school, institution
the people that are coming, out that are spending their,
money spending their resources to come out here to support.
Us you, know this is a community and everybody has a, role,
right everybody has a. Role and it just so happens

(01:11:14):
that you know here pretty soon for about twelve weeks
in a. Row you, know the role Of mark steps
and this football team it falls On, saturdays and their
role is to represent this university and the fan base
in a way that makes that makes our community feel
feel appreciated and feel.

Speaker 1 (01:11:33):
Valued yeah, Yeah and AS i said as, well you've
got new faces coming, in but guys who want to prove,
themselves who may be you, know want to challenge themselves
by playing in The Southeastern conference and the schedule they're, Facing,
jeremy you face some tough schedules in your. Day but,
man you, know now you've Got oklahoma And texas at

(01:11:54):
Least oklahoma's not on the schedule. Yet but you, KNOW
i always, say the calendar is this tough as the,
schedule you've got early games that are.

Speaker 2 (01:12:02):
VITAL i, mean they.

Speaker 1 (01:12:03):
Got a chance early to show, themselves don't They they.

Speaker 5 (01:12:07):
Do AND i remember having a you, know having a
sidebar conversation With christy and you, Know Logan. STENBERG i,
said you, know from a you, know in a satirical,
sense these guys get a chance to play who wants
to be a?

Speaker 4 (01:12:21):
Millionaire twelve?

Speaker 5 (01:12:22):
Times? Right and and what a tremendous opportunity to go
out and compete at The southeast The conference and have
fun playing a game that you love and doing it
with your brothers and going out and trying to write

(01:12:43):
history that's favorable to you and your. Team and it's you,
know AND i cherish those those memories with my. Guys,
yeah you, know and it's such a special. Time AND
i just hope these guys that they just take a
second and just, realize, uh the opportunity at hand and
just enjoy the. Process, Well i'll.

Speaker 1 (01:13:04):
Let you go with, this speaking of the, SCHEDULE i
firmly believe that this could be one of those years
and we've seen it before here In lexington where this
team could be markedly better than last. Year but because
of the. Schedule maybe the record doesn't indicate, that you
know What i'm, saying.

Speaker 5 (01:13:24):
It's very, possible BUT i think that there's other ways
to be able to gauge like, improvement because what you're
saying is one hundred percent. True but there are. Ways
there are ways to you, know if you're an athletic,
director if you're a university, president if you're the board of,

(01:13:45):
trustees there are ways to evaluate this team other than
wins and. Losses, yeah and you know that's and once,
again you know that there's a lot of criteria for.
That you, know it's obviously improvement from a macro perspective
of as, well you, know, defense offensive, performance overall, touchdowns touchdowns,

(01:14:05):
allowed penalty. RECRUITING i, mean, yeah you can you can
see it all, right you can see it on the.
Film the film doesn't. Lie and most, IMPORTANTLY i think
the sentiment that you get from, uh some of our
peers that watch the, game that understand the, game that

(01:14:27):
watch the tape and watch the, film AND i think,
that you, know there's a lot of honesty AMONGST i
feel like amongst our, group and we will, disseminate you,
know those messages things and honesty like how we always.
Have you, know sometimes you lose some games just because you,
know just because it's a, matchup just because it's a matchup.

(01:14:48):
Issues but, yeah but energy and, effort you know those
thinks that's character once, again AND i don't think the fan.
BASE i don't think our fan base will our universe
we'll punish or be spiteful or not be supportive of
a football team that takes the field and just absolutely

(01:15:10):
is relentless and gives it.

Speaker 4 (01:15:12):
There.

Speaker 2 (01:15:12):
All, WELL i hope you're.

Speaker 1 (01:15:14):
RIGHT i think you're, right and it won't be long
now before we find. Out thank, you, BROTHER i appreciate.
It looking forward to seeing you.

Speaker 5 (01:15:19):
Soon, Absolutely Thanks. Gabe we will wrap.

Speaker 1 (01:15:23):
Up this edition of The Big blue And sider on
the other side of the break here on six THIRTY
wlap Welcome, back final segment of our program thanks To
Jeremy jarman And Wesley, woodyard two of my all time
favorite Football. WILDCATS i will close out with SOME nfl
chatter because many of you play fantasy, football and if
you were just PLAYING nfl, FANS i will tell you

(01:15:44):
this that The bengals right now are Doing bengal, things
although it's not entirely their. Fault some of it is
there is a contract. Impass you may know With Trey,
hendrickson The bengals defensive. End all he did last year
lead the league with seventeen and a half sacks and
going into his final, year he wants a new, contract of,

(01:16:06):
course after an all pro, season wants a long term.
Deal bengal's not willing to give him guaranteed money past
the first. Year, now other edge rushers. Have, indeed other
edge rushers have received guaranteed money Like Miles garrett with The,
browns The, Raiders Max, CROSBY. Tj watt from The steelers

(01:16:27):
who signed that huge, Extension and that's not What hendrickson
is looking. For he's not looking FOR. Tj watt, money
but he wants more than just the one year. Guaranteed
and keep in mind THAT nfl contracts compared to other
sports are. Lacking you read about THESE nba. Contracts guys
get paid whether they play or, not whether they hurt or.
Not for the most, part same with, baseball although it's

(01:16:51):
tougher to cash in if you're a baseball player because
you don't get that instant gratification of the riches that
come in THE, nba but so much of THESE nfl
contracts is steeped on what do they get to the
next year if they stay? Healthy all that. Stuff but The,
bengals of course have Paid Joe Burrow Jamar, chase he

(01:17:13):
got thirty two point seven million fully guaranteed of his
one hundred and sixty one million. Dollars they pay T
