Speaker 1 (00:00):
Oh, guess what day it is.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Guess what day it is?
Speaker 3 (00:05):
Huh?
Speaker 1 (00:06):
Anybody, It's hump Day.
Speaker 4 (00:12):
Welcome to the Big Blue and Sider. Dick Abrielle with
you Wednesday edition of our program, and it is our
usual Wednesday lineup. Cole Park of the Cats pause he
took over for Aaron Gershawan on the UK Beats. That
will talk some football and some basketball with Cole because
of course we have been talking to some of the
players as well as Mark Pope, but we will talk
a lot of football with Cole as well. Sean Woods,
(00:34):
the Unforgettable Guard, joins us every Wednesday. We'll talk with
Sean about the basketball Cats and about high school basketball
in the state of Kentucky. Shawan as the head coach
at Scott County High School and as always our West
End Bureau Chief schedule permitting. As always on Wednesdays, Gary
Moore will join us from not Los Angeles, LA, but
Louisville Area, LA, and we'll get his thoughts on what
(00:57):
has been happening throughout the world of sports. Of course,
Kentucky football coming up thirty one days away now from
the opener against the Toledo Rockets, the team that has
been picked to win them in America Conference. It will
not be an easy opener for the Wildcats to ledo
US four All conference preseason all Conference players returning and
(01:18):
a starting quarterback who threw for nearly three thousand yards
last year. But Kentucky will start a quarterback who threw
for a lot of yards last year, nearly. I think
there was more than thirty eight hundred at Incarnate word,
thirty five touchdowns. And of course that is Zach Calzada,
and that is the way the depth chart reads today.
Maybe it changes tomorrow, who knows, but likely it will
(01:42):
be Calzada who, Yeah, he transfers in from A one
double A school, but he has played not just at
the D one level, he has played in the SEC
and he has played well. He played at Texas A
and M for a couple of years, and he was
the guy who engineered the upset in terms of the
quarterback position of Alabama back when Nick Saban was still
(02:02):
coaching at Alabama. It was a huge upset and it
was Kentucky playing in a day game. I think may
had have been a noon game or something like that,
because I remember walking out and seeing the end of
the Alabama and m game, or maybe it was before
the Kentucky game. A friend of mine had a huge,
(02:23):
big screen TV out in the parking lot and I
saw the end of that upset win and Zach Kelzada
appeared on the SEC Now yesterday on the SEC networking,
somebody asked him about playing back to the kind of
success he had in college station.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
You know, I need to go back to and it's
something that I've been working on, but go back to
those levels of preparation. You know, that game and really
that whole season. I think I tapped into, you know,
a level of preparation that you know, was preparing like
an NFL quarterback, and you know, coming back to speed
of the game, it's going to be a lot faster,
a lot bigger guys, a lot faster, a lot stronger guys.
(03:03):
So just to be as prepared as possible and get
my team ready to play with.
Speaker 4 (03:08):
And getting prepared like that means a lot of reps
and a lot of what they call film work video work,
and I guarantee you they're already working on that right now.
Calzada also talked about the fact that he could have
gone to a lot of places through the portal and
chose Kentucky. Of course, one of the reasons was Mark Stoops.
He likes the way Stoops runs the Kentucky program.
Speaker 5 (03:30):
I really like his approach.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
He leaves a lot of room for it to be
a player led team, and I think with the guys
that we have, that's going to be our strength. You know,
a lot of guys are focused. I think motivated might
not be the best word for our players, but I
think it's discipline and urgency, you know, as a team.
That's that's been a big model for us is you know,
I wasn't here last year. A lot of these guys
weren't here last year. But you know we can see
(03:53):
him feel the pressure that's with this upcoming season, and
I think just coming every day and putting our best
forward from January to now and as we roll in
the camp is important for us.
Speaker 4 (04:05):
That is Zach Calizada courtesy of the SEC Network, likely
the starting quarterback for the Wildcats when they open up.
You will hear that game right here. Of course. On
six thirty WLAP a while back, I played a clip
from an interview that DeMarcus Cousins did with the Run
Your Race podcast. It's a two hour interview. It is fascinating.
(04:25):
I'm coming back to it because some people have been
talking to me about it. They've drawn my attention to
different parts of it. And I have to admit that
I only heard the clips a while back, but I
did not hear the part about the fact that Boogie
Cousins missed his sophomore year a high school. I do
remember when he signed with Kentucky hearing there were some
(04:46):
discipline issues or something, and he got kicked out of
school and he got sent to a juvenile detention facility
what he called a boot camp, and you know, it
was kind of like jail, but it was a boot
camp for younger men. And he told the story and
what had happened, essentially was he got kicked off a
school bus coming back from a game that the varsity lost.
(05:09):
The JV won their tournament, varsity lost the championship. JV
guys were celebrating. Varsity guys didn't like that and took
issue with it, and the bus driver, who Boogie said
had never liked him, had never liked him, told him
to get off the bus, so he packed up his stuff.
This is a six' ten sophomore he's got his, backpack
(05:30):
his gear, bag and he's stepping past the driver to
step down and get off the. Bus AND i think
he said the driver accused him of bumping him or,
something and the driver shoved him toward the door and
the six to Ten boogie slams his head against the
doorframe and took it out on the. Driver police came next,
(05:53):
thing you, Know boogie's kicked out of. School stuff like
that came out in the. Interview it's really. Fascinating Boogie,
COUSINS i think is a really fascinating, guy very, intelligent
and talked about how when he was in that, camp you,
know he just knew he didn't belong. There and he
also talked about growing up he was surrounded by ignorance
(06:14):
and people doing the wrong things and trying to take
him with, them and he recognized that, fact WHICH i
thought was. Great so, anyhow fast forward. Ahead he becomes
one of the greatest players in the, country goes to
A uk camp run By Billy. Gillespie then he sits
in on A uk practice and he knew Under Billy
(06:34):
clyde he would not be a.
Speaker 6 (06:35):
WILDCAT i Saw Billy gillespie conduct the PRACTICE i saint
knowing HELL i ever play for that. Man this dude
is a. Lunatic he's, crazy And i'm gonna Just i'm
gonna finish this camp and get out of. Here ain't
a chance in Hell i'm a company to the.
Speaker 7 (06:54):
Dude it's.
Speaker 4 (06:55):
Nuts first thing that came to my mind WHEN i
heard that Was Billy gillespie had the reputation of being
one of the greatest recruiters In. America what had turned
out At Al paso AND a AND. M he excelled
at bringing in junior college, transfers but he showed A
kentucky he was not the recruiter that they, needed and
(07:16):
he blew a chance at Signing Boogie. Cousins but in
the interim he gets. Fired, caliperi who was going to
Sign John wall And Boogie cousins to play At, memphis
comes TO uk And boogie becomes A. Wildcat but he
told the story of a hard lesson he learned in
his first practice as A Kentucky. Wildcat things that were
(07:40):
promised to him in terms of style of, play you
could be a big man who plays out on the
floor and handles the. Ball didn't work out that. Way
Under JOHN.
Speaker 6 (07:48):
CALIPERI i remember my first practice And i'm, like, man
this dude live to. Me when these cultures, recruited they
tell you.
Speaker 4 (07:55):
Everything you.
Speaker 6 (07:57):
Know he's telling me LIKE i, said he's gonna play
me in the. System LIKE i told. YOU i want
to play Like Sean. WALLIE i want to dribble the.
BALL i don't remember you're. DRIBBLING i DON'T i don't
remember you dribbling the.
Speaker 5 (08:11):
Ball.
Speaker 6 (08:11):
Yeah, man the first, practice, BRO i grabbed a rebound
and DECIDED i wanted to go dribble the ball up
the floor and didn't turn the ball over. Nothing cal
blew the. Whistle what the fuck are you?
Speaker 2 (08:30):
Doing?
Speaker 8 (08:31):
YEAH i got my center bringing. Up this Is john Wall,
yeah the number one. Pick AND i got my center
bringing the ball. Up And i'm, like, damn BUT i told.
You you said you were gonna.
Speaker 6 (08:48):
Let me like bring the BALL i don't ever want
to see you bring the ball up. Again you better
get that ball To john. Wall you better get that
ball To. John and in that, Moment i'm, like, oh this.
Live i've been financed this. Dude the lots of, Me.
Speaker 4 (09:04):
I'm guessing there are a lot of players all Over
america who had similar. Experiences we're going to talk To
Sean woods about that coming. Up one more From. Boogie
he talked about the loss To West. Virginia after the.
Game he Said John wall was, sobbing. Uncontrollabing boogie, said
that's not. Me i'm not that kind of. Guy and
he SAID i couldn't understand Why john WAS krk because
(09:26):
he's going to be the number one pick in the.
Draft and tried to talk To john about this and.
That john, SAID i don't have time to think about
stuff like. That But DeMarcus cousins was thinking about coming
back To. Kentucky that was his, mindset and he talked
about when he went in to speak To John, caliperry.
Speaker 6 (09:43):
This is actually. Hostile i'm, Like, cayl LIKE i want
to come back on the chip like, yeah Like i'm
ready for next year. Already And kyle was, like, man look,
kid talk to me like, this, kid if you want
to help my, family you'll come. Back if you want
to help your, FAMILY i won't see you next. SEASON
(10:05):
i was, like, stop all, right. Man so now things
Are i'm, like, damn that won't be in THE. Nba
and now they talking About i'm a you, know potential
top five.
Speaker 8 (10:17):
Pig i'm out to the talking about MAN i broke his.
Head i'm, Out i'm.
Speaker 4 (10:25):
Out. Yeah and we had heard that, before hadn't we From.
Caliperi he said that he told, us the, media the
public that that's what he told, players if you want
to help me my, family come back going to help
your family go Pro And Boogie cousins confirms that's what
he said to. Him Otherwise boogie would have been A
wildcat for a second. Year think about. That up, Next Darren,
(10:48):
Hendrick Ryan, sandberg The hall Of famer who passed away.
RECENTLY uh interacted With darren And darren's. DAD i want
him to tell us that story at the bottom of the.
Hour Sean, woods The Unforgettable guard on six THIRTY wlapd
and three two welcome back to The Big Blue insider
and joining us down our celebrity. Hotline Darren hedrick and
(11:09):
AS i mentioned earlier on the, show with the passing
Of Ryan, sandberg many many, people, thousands probably, millions shared
their thoughts and their opinions Of Ryan, sandberg much beloved
player for The, cubs first The phillies and then in
a trade where he was thrown in as a utility,
player went on to be A hall Of famer In.
(11:30):
Chicago Darren, hedrick of, course radio voice of The Baseball,
wildcats crossed pass With Ryan sandberg And. Darren it was
more than just saying, hey, hello CAN i get an?
AUTOGRAPH i mean you worked with him, basically and your.
Dad you posted a great anecdote about how your dad
was part of a practical joke played Between Really sandberg
(11:53):
and another guy with the smoke he's down there In.
Tennessee tell me you're recalling a recollection of.
Speaker 5 (11:59):
That, Yeah, so of Course Ryan sandberg is a legendary.
Prankster he loves practical, jokes and that was one of
the things that was fun to learn About rhino in
two thousand and nine WHEN i worked with him as
The smokey's manager and very quiet, guy very, quiet intense,
(12:22):
guy but he had a sense of humor about, him
and so he had been giving my broadcast, partner my,
Mentor Mick Gilli, lespie had been giving him a hard,
time playing some jokes on him throughout the early portions
of the, summer and they were coming back from a
(12:42):
series In. ALABAMA i think they'd been playing The Montgomery,
biscuits and they stopped for a brief moment at this
little local mom and pop gas station somewhere in Remote,
ALABAMA i think it was outside Of, huntsville and they
had stumbled across this homemade jar of pickled quail. Eggs
(13:05):
and of course you can Imagine Ryan, sandberg who had
been playing In philadelphia And chicago And hall Of famer
and all this, stuff he apparently had never seen anything
like this and was sort of giving it a side,
eye And mick told him that he should buy a
jar of. Him well that's when the idea was hatched
(13:29):
In mix's brain that he was going to Get ryan
on this. Prank and so at a home, Game ryan
always stood next to the gate to the entrance to
the field that was close to the home, dugout and
he signed autographs for an hour And, dick it was
probably thousands of people that came down this aisle over
(13:51):
the course of the. Summer so, Anyway, dad my dad
got in line with the baseball and Had ryan sign.
It and he, Said, hey if you signed this, Ball
i'll bring you in your part of pickled quail. Eggs
AND i was, like, oh this is. Weird, no he
didn't know my dad at. All he had never met,
(14:13):
him never met. Him and So mick got the jar
of pickled quail, eggs gave It. Dad they put a
label on, It Ryan Rhino's pickled Quail, eggs and they
had this great design on it and, everything And dad
gave it to, him and of Course rhino when he
showed it To mick figured out it was a. Prank
(14:34):
but he was proud of that, jar and it followed
him and The smokies the rest of the summer all
the way to The Southern League Championship. Series they eventually
lost The championship, series but it was what a, summer
what a memorable summer it was With, sandberg And i've
got so many great stories of working with him and
(14:56):
his run ins with some umpires on the field.
Speaker 4 (14:59):
Too so that jar was it like a good luck,
charm a? Talisman, yeah really it.
Speaker 5 (15:06):
Was you know how some teams latch on the objects
and it carries in the. Dugout we've Seen kentucky do
that a few, times and so but, yeah the jar
of pickled quail eggs helped The Tennessee smokies to A
Southern league championship appearance in two thousand and.
Speaker 4 (15:22):
Nine did you ever sample a pickled quail? Egd.
Speaker 5 (15:27):
No. No in, Fact i'm not sure that jar was ever.
Opened AND i have not personally had a pickled quail
egg or pickled pig speed or any of that stuff
that you might find in some of Those southern gas.
Speaker 4 (15:40):
STATIONS i will tell YOU i worked in a liquor
store briefly right out of. College part TIME i was
working in, radio but making ends, meet and they had
a jar of those Pickled they kind of looked, like you,
know sausages or you, know like mini, belonging you know
What i'm talking. About and, yeah curiosity got the best
AND i tried. One OH i can't SAY i would
(16:03):
eat them every. Day it wasn't too, bad BUT i
never went back to, it AND i can Say i'm
better for the. Experience we're talking To darren edwrit the
radio voice of The Baseball wildcats who worked With Ryan,
sandberg The hall Of famer who recently. Passed ryan was
the manager of The. Smokies and what was it like
for those young, Players? Darren and you met a lot
(16:25):
of them when you were a young guy yourself back
then when you posted that, picture you actually had, hair
but you look you look very. Dapper but for those
guys coming, up AND i got to, think maybe not
all of, them but at least some of them knew
who they were dealing with as the. Manager oh, yeah.
Speaker 5 (16:43):
Absolutely and you know that was the thing is those
players absolutely Adored sandberg and loved working with. Him he
had that locker room from day, one and he fought
for those, guys AS i, mentioned you, know he would defend.
Them and and there was a great STORY i was
thinking about. This so there was a night Where ryan
(17:08):
had turned one game where a guy had a bad
night at the play into a season long feud with
this particular umpire who ended up making the major. LEAGUES
i don't want to name his, name But sadberg goes
out one night to change. Pictures he had a guy
(17:28):
that was struggling with walks and that sort of, thing
and he also kind of felt like he was getting
squeezed a little. Bit So ryan goes out to make
this pitching. Change he's got his lineup card And i'm
sitting in the dugout because it's late. Innings i'm getting
ready to do postgame. Interviews on the, field AND i
(17:49):
noticed that the exchange is. Done the change has been.
Made the new picture's warming. Up But ryan doesn't leave
the sight of the umpire and he kind of looks at,
him and in a very understated and quiet, fashion he
turns his head towards the umpire and says. Something the
umpire turns his head and looks At samberg and says,
(18:09):
something And ryan turns around and says something back to,
him and then he gets dejected whatever he said on
the second go around with the magic, word and that's
When ryan got his money's. Worth he let this young
man have. It the first base umpire comes over to
our pitching, Coach Dennis llewell and then, says you need
(18:30):
to go get this, guy And dennis shouts, Back, hey
this isn't my. Problem you all started. This But dennis
did eventually go out there and diffuse the, situation but
not Before ryan accidentally bumped. Him let's put accidentally in
front of. That he bumped. Him ryan had to serve
(18:50):
a suspension when we went and played The Carolina mudcats In.
Raleigh there's full circle because LATER i would become voice
of The. Mudcats but he sat in a suite at
The Mudcats ballpark and managed The. Smokies unbeknownst to The Southern,
league he managed The smokey's from a suite at Five County.
STADIUM i love.
Speaker 4 (19:11):
That, yeah there's a lot of stories like that in
minor league, BASEBALL i. Know AND i guess you weren't
surprised at the outpouring for Of sanberg when he.
Speaker 5 (19:20):
Passed, no not at. All such a Beloved cubs, figure
and you can't help but appreciate the way he played the.
Game obviously a terrific offensive. Player really came alive with
what they've dubbed The sandberg game when he homered off
of suit or twice, yep to help The cubs come
(19:41):
back and beat The. Cards and such a great defensive
player at second base. Too numerous gold gloves And Andre
dawson And dunston and those guys have just heaped praise
after praise on, him and it really in some ways
it's a shame That sandberg and all those talented players
(20:04):
with The cubs only made the playoffs, twice the last
one in nineteen eighty, Nine but, yeah what of a.
Player AND i think quiet intensity is something that they
accurately describes.
Speaker 4 (20:17):
Him Darren, headrick radio voice of the Baseball. Cats thank
you so much for. SHARING i appreciate.
Speaker 5 (20:22):
It, yeah no, Problem. Dick thanks for the. TIME i appreciate.
Speaker 4 (20:26):
It, darren of, course also the radio voice of the
women's Basketball wildcats and anchors our scoreboard segments FOR uk.
Football he keeps very busy On, saturdays and that's coming
up AT Us fast four weeks From. Saturday you'll hear
Mister headrick along with the rest of. Us up Next Shawn,
woods The Unforgettable guard here On The big Bluen sider
(20:47):
six THIRTY Wlap welcome back to The Big. Bluensider joining
us now as he does Every, wednesday is The Unforgettable
Guard Sean. Woods he is the head coach At Scott
County High. School his jersey hangs in the rafters Of
rupp And sean before we talk about your neck of
The woods and high school hoops here In. Kentucky earlier
on the, SHOW i was playing some clips from The
(21:09):
Run Your race podcast With Boogie cousins and other like.
Me you had heard some of the, clips BUT i
got a chance to sit down and listen to virtually
the entire. Thing it's just really. Fascinating says a lot About.
Boogie we'll come back to that in a, minute BUT
i wanted to ask you about some of the things
he encountered growing up that it seems like are kind
(21:29):
of consistent with a lot of guys and probably some
women as, well high school recruits who come in and you,
know we all put them up on this pedestal and
they're basketball players At. Kentucky But Boogie cousins missed his
sophomore year at high school because he was in a
juvenile detention, facility which just underscored the fact that he
(21:49):
had a rough. Upbringing he had issues in his. Life
you AND i talked About Khalil whitney on YOUR tvt,
Team the point, being these folks have a lot going
going on in their, lives so much more than, basketball
that we don't know about and we never even. Consider
and now you're seeing that back again on the high school,
level aren't.
Speaker 5 (22:09):
You, oh no doubt about. It and you, know everybody
comes from different. Places you, know all you see is
what's on the surface in your, eyes but you have
no idea what's going on in their. Homes you, know their,
parents if they have, parents so on and so, forth
so that then you wonder why they have some issues
with male coaches or authority or constructive criticism because they're so.
(22:36):
Sensitive and they have a problem with trust because some,
people some kids come from places where trust was never.
There they've always been let, down you know What i'm,
saying people taking advantage of. Them they may had opportune
situations with their, mom you, know not being a strong,
mother having to do what she's got to do just
to put food on the. Table you never, know you
(22:56):
know WHAT i. Mean But god gives kids and you
people gifts to get them out of those, situations and
especially to get an education with your, talent and you,
Know Boogie boogie and several others are no exception to.
Speaker 4 (23:11):
That it's interesting you bring up the word. Trust you
don't remember this probably or maybe you. Do we you
AND i have talked a lot over the last couple
of years on this, show but when you got The
Scott county, job one of the words you used multiple
times was trust because you talked about building the relationships
with these young. Players And i'm thinking and listening to
(23:34):
your comments and listening to, cousins you can't shortcut that can.
YOU i mean just asking someone trust. Me the more
somebody says trust, me you're.
Speaker 5 (23:43):
Not going to trust, them, right, no no doubt about.
It and from a coach, standpoint it's got to be
trust all the way across the. Board you, know you
got to have trust with your. Assistance you've got to
have trust and be able to trust your. Administration you
got to be able to trust the people you're working.
With you, know if there's no, trust there's no way
you can be. Successful and it can't be any. Jealousy
it can't be this or. That it has to be you,
(24:05):
know sometimes a dictatorship because of you, know when a
head coach is being a head coach or a d
or superintendent or anything like. That you, know but it
can't be any. Animosity and anytime you sense, it if
you sense disloyalty and, distrust, wow it's it's just think about,
(24:28):
yourself you know What i'm. Saying you're gonna look at people.
Different you're not gonna respond to them. Different you don't
think that they have your best interest at. Heart you
think they have a, knife you, know stuck in your.
Back you know they may be pissing you, know kissing
you like that old, saying that old, saying as old people,
say you know they may be kissing you on the,
cheap the peeing down your, leg you know WHAT i.
Mean so you, know kids have that same, deal have
(24:49):
that same trust. Issue you know if they you, know
you don't know what they what school's. Like you, know
if they had a d D. Adhd you, know you,
know kids, come you know several. Backgrounds and you, Know
boogie was six eleven and he was getting in. Trouble
so everybody's, like, man you just got to get out
of this deal because you have an opportunity to make
(25:09):
a lot of. Money And i'm sure he was told
that millions of. Times just just get out of. That you,
can't you, know six to eleven stand in our, neighborhood
blah blah blah. Blah you got to get out to
get a better. Life And i'm sure he was. Pushed
i'm sure it took a, lot and, uh you know
that's where he is. Now but he could have been
a casually just like a lot of them that's in
the streets right, now no.
Speaker 4 (25:29):
Question and he talked about how he was so bitter
when he was kicked out of school and had to
go to this camp and basically had washed his hands of,
basketball couldn't. Play you, know here's a guy who was
on the front page of the local newspaper as a,
ballplayer but heading off to this, camp and he talked
about a guy that he met in the. Camp it
was five foot, four he, said and loved. Basketball and he, said,
(25:53):
MAN i WISH i had your skill in your, size
and he this guy made him understand exactly what you just,
said that he had gifts that he could take advantage.
Of and from that point, on once he got out
of the, camp you, know his life did pick. Up
but you talked about backgrounds And boogie was basically, said you,
know grew up with that a, father and that happens
with a lot of, kids no matter what's your walk.
(26:14):
LIFE i did you know my dad died young and
left five kids. Behind that's just the way things happen.
Sometimes but, now as a, Coach sean and you came
from a strong, family you've talked about. That that again
is SOMETHING i know that you embrace when it comes
to dealing with your. Players but you can't force that,
either Can you can't sit there and Say i'm going
(26:36):
to be like a second dad to. You you got
to let that, happen don't.
Speaker 5 (26:39):
You oh no doubt about. It and it starts with your.
Actions you. Know you can be, stern you, know but
you they got to know that you got their back
and you're not lying to them even when you get on.
Them it's like a. Parent you, know you're telling them
the truth when you're getting on, them that they're doing
wrong to either hurt themselves or someone else or image or,
(27:01):
whatever you know WHAT i. Mean so you, know sometimes
kids don't get, that and it takes a, while and
it takes. Growth you. KNOW i got kids that coach
and you, know there's not too many coaches In america
that has one hundred percent graduation. RATE i do as
a sixteen year head. Coach but when you're on those
kids and you making them go to class and you're
checking class every, day and they can't stand. It you're
(27:21):
always on, This you're always, This you're always. That But
i'm making sure that they don't. Fail i'm doing my
best while they're with me because their parents or whoever
entrusted them with me to make SURE i do right by. Them,
well sometimes doing right by a. Kid not it's making them,
uncomfortable not letting them and not being the point of
point at least. Resistance you, know you got to be
(27:43):
the make you, know to make sure a guy that
because when they leave you WHEN i was in, college
they're an. Adult Now i'm in high. School now they
get to go to college and another guy or woman
gets to you know What i'm, saying make sure that
when they leave them after twenty two years old or
whatever and they're out in the real. World but MY
i have to do my. Part and that's one of
the reasons WHY i like, coaching is BECAUSE i can
(28:04):
make a difference through. Basketball and you, know a lot
of a lot of, people don't you, know a lot
of coaches just use, them you, know let them do,
this let them do, That just make sure that they
do just enough in the classroom and try to hide
some of their discipline, actions disciplinary actions just so they
can win basketball. Games and then when the kid, leaves he's,
(28:26):
no he's no better of a person leaving than he
was coming. In and that's the case when you have
those cases and that coach is no. Good he may
won a lot of games with this, guy but look
at the. Aftermath you, Know i've.
Speaker 4 (28:39):
Been doing this for a long, time as you. Know
and one of the things that really annoys me about
my brethren it within the, media is the people who
mock the notion of student. Athletes and and THAT'S i
believe simply because all they ever think, about care, about
right about talk about are the guys at the very,
end gals at it's a very very top who go
(29:01):
on to play, professionally and they assume that, well you,
KNOW i guarantee you these kids didn't do any class
work or. Whatever whereas when you've got AN apr report
that that's trying to hold you. Accountable that's one. Thing
but you also have coaches who know that ninety eight
percent of the athletes on their campus will not go
(29:22):
pro and feel the same way you. Do you know,
What that just bothers the crap out of, me And
i'm sure it does coaches across the.
Speaker 5 (29:30):
Country well it, does you know WHAT i, Mean because
you're a user, now you know What i'm. Saying and
to be honest with, you there are a lot of
guys out there in this profession that are like. That oh,
yeah and you know you got, now well you, know
you can't coach the old. Way you, know you can't
stay on these, guys you can't get you know all
THAT i beg to differ because it's not that you're
(29:54):
getting on, them you're disciplining them to make sure that
they do right that don't hurt you in a game
off the, court even in their personal. Life that's not being.
Bad that's not a bad. Person that's just certain kids
that can't take the language that you're giving, them or
the tone and the excitement and enthusiasm that's coming out
of your body when you're saying. Things but the message is,
(30:16):
clear and some people who don't want to hear, it
and you got parents out there that don't with their
kids being. Told you, know What i'm saying is the,
Truth and all they want to be told is how
good they, are what can you do for? Them so
on and so, forth and then they use that against. You you,
know he's verbally abusing, him he's, this he's. That, no
we're not you know What i'm. Saying we're just being brutally.
(30:37):
Honest and guess, what basketball is. Easy life is, hard
and you much rather tell you the truth about life through,
basketball then you do a person lying and you're telling
you how good you. Are then when basketball is over,
with you can't find a, job nobody knows who you,
are and you out on the streets doing, nothing and
you have nothing to show for four years of being
(30:58):
in a higher, institute higher learning and having all the
experiences of traveling and so on and so. Forth that's
all for not and that that's not how this is
supposed to, be especially his.
Speaker 4 (31:10):
Experience he Is Sewan. Woods he is the head coach
At Scott Counny High school and of course the unforgettable
guard whose jersey hangs in the raptors of Rupp we'll
come back and talk more basketball was shown on the
other side of the break here on six THIRTY Wlap welcome.
Back we're talking With Seawan, woods as we do each
and Every wednesday's schedules. Permitting AND i had mentioned earlier
(31:30):
THAT i had been listening to longer segments of the
of The Boogey cousins Podcast it's The Run Your Race,
podcast And boogie was a guest from down In Puerto
rico where he's playing pro, ball and he talked ABOUT
i had to smile at this one his first practice
At kentucky when he tried to bring the ball up the,
floor pulled off a, rebound brought it up the, floor
(31:51):
said he didn't turn it, over But Cali perry lit into,
him you, know and you got to get the ball
To John. Wall he's going to be the number one draft.
Pick And boogie said to, himself this guy lied to
me when he recruited. Me he SAID i could play
out on the floor and dribble the ball and all that.
Stuff welcome to the real, world, RIGHT i, mean tell
Me sean about that recruiting process and what happens between
(32:13):
then and the first day of. Practice AND i know
if all coaches are, different but there are some SIMILARITIES
i would, Think.
Speaker 5 (32:20):
Well for, Me, DICK i took pride in not lying
to a kid in a pro career. Process, yeah you,
know IF i had a kid Like Boogey cousins and
he had that, Ability i'm gonna let him do, that
show that because it's only going to enhance my, team
you know What i'm. Saying but we're gonna work on
it every day and skill, development individual. Workout so you,
know to tell a, kid, Yeah i'm gonna let you do,
(32:41):
this and let you do that and then when you get,
here it's all for. Nothing, now how can that kid trust?
You how can you maximize that kid at him helping
you win when he's always looking at you crossright and,
crossways saying you came to my house and you lied
to me and my mother and so and so on
and so on and so just to get me to come.
HERE i don't buy. THAT i really. Don't AND i
(33:02):
took pride in, that and you, know BECAUSE i can't
coach a kid hard AS i want to coach him
if he Thinks i'm lying to.
Speaker 4 (33:09):
Him, Yeah well apparently he got over. ME i understand that.
Clearly and he had a nice one year At. Kentucky
and he also said he wanted to come. Back he,
ASSUMED i, mean walked Into Cali perry's office for the
postseason meeting set on coming. Back he Knew John waller's
roommate was. Leaving but that's When Cali, perry you, know
(33:31):
used the, line do you want to help me come
back and help your? Family you? Go and not many
coaches have that, Opportunity sean as you, know to tell
a kid like that to go. On But CALI peri
the at least at that point was true to his
word about trying to help the kid's.
Speaker 5 (33:50):
Family and that's what Made john. Good you know WHAT i,
Mean that's What makeyl good is he got guys to
the next. Level you know What i'm. Saying he enhanced
their their living and he's a saint for. THAT i
really do believe. That and, also you know how many
people take young men from the, hood, okay or being
A kentucky guy you have proven a din and so
(34:11):
on and so, forth and you take them to places
to where they're homeless people and you watch their nasty.
Feet but that's in The. Bible So cal does have
some goodness about. HIM i got to give it to.
Him you know What i'm. Saying that takes a lot
of courage and a lot of nerve to make a seventeen,
eighteen nineteen twenty twenty two year old kid watch a
(34:32):
person who's hygiene's bad living on the street's feet.
Speaker 4 (34:35):
In haiti as, well.
Speaker 5 (34:37):
Exactly but the fact that he did, it that's in
the you know What i'm, saying that that's that's that's
that's that's big time and things like that go unnotice With.
Cal but at the, end of the. Day can't nobody
say that he enhanced people's lives. Financially you know What i'm,
saying you, Know and that's what college is all. About
you got coaches now who even WHEN i, played you
(35:00):
know who won't won't help. You you, know once you're,
done you're, done they won't even return your phone. Call
you have guys out there like.
Speaker 4 (35:07):
THAT i believe.
Speaker 5 (35:08):
It, no and and and it's a travesty because guess,
what when you came to recruit, me you needed. Me
and that's why you recruited me hard because you thought
THAT i can help you. Win and when you, win
that's putting food on your table and your family's table
and helping you win because of What i'm doing collectively
with the other thirteen fourteen guys are on the. Team
and then WHEN i When i'm, done and no matter
(35:31):
what our relationship, WAS i need you in the time
of in the time of, need and you can't help. Me. Now,
now that's WHERE i go. Wrong that's that's WHY i
have a problem with some of these guys with. That
and it's not. Right and you, KNOW i tell kids
all the, time this relationship is not a four year.
Relationship it's a lifelong. Relationship you know my, wife you
(35:54):
know my, kids you know. Everything THEN i know. Yours
you getting, MARRIED i need to be. There you have a,
BABY i need to know you, know so on and so,
forth and if you need, me you, know IF i
can't help, YOU i will find a way to help
you get a, job so, on to get going with your.
Life but that's what this thing.
Speaker 7 (36:08):
Is it's.
Speaker 5 (36:09):
Continuing it's life, long and coaches don't think that. Way
and that's a.
Speaker 4 (36:13):
Shame by the, way the anecdote better The washington the.
FEED i can attest to. That Sam dick went Through
haiti along with my sports Videographer Steve, moss And sam
told me about that and he said when it, happened he,
said the first, time he, Said caliperri was off to the,
side off in a. Corner it wasn't a media. Op
(36:33):
it wasn't, hey, folks we're gonna start washing. Feed bring
that camera over. Here he very quietly went over and
began doing, That so it wasn't like he was craving
attention to do. It So i'm glad you brought that.
UP a couple of minutes left With Sean. Woods you
AND i have talked before about how you played in
The Rick, patino and you people forget you signed Under Eddie,
sutton who was Like, betina a different style of, coach
(36:54):
different kind of, person but the one thing they had
in common the core, value what's discipline on the, court
and he had his demons off the. Court we know,
that So, Rick BUT i bring it up because now
that you're coaching at the high school, level helping prepare
these kids for, college you hear people, say AND i
think you can attest to. This the, kids especially at your,
(37:17):
level crave. Discipline they might not even know it, right
but they know they need, it they know they want.
Speaker 5 (37:22):
It they do dick and and and and when they're
craving for, attention that's what they're. Doing they're acting out
to get your. Attention and you, KNOW i had this
deal and it's CALLED i do have. Favorites and what
that is is is that as a, COACH i pay
attention to the people who are very. ATTENTIVE i give
(37:42):
more attention to the people who work, harder who always ask,
questions who wants to get better more so THAN i
do the kid that. Doesn't because IF i pay more
attention to the kid that doesn't and there's always a
nuisance and getting in trouble and what type of what
AM i telling everybody? Else in order to get my,
attention you got to act, out same with the. Parent
so you, know kids want, that they just don't know
(38:04):
how to get. It everybody wants to be. Wanted everybody
wants to be. Praised everybody wants to set to somebody
to say good things about. Them they just don't know
how to go about. It and you know that's that's
one of our jobs as a coach is to tease.
Speaker 6 (38:18):
That.
Speaker 4 (38:18):
Yeah, Yeah and they don't always respond immediately to, it do?
They but, no they.
Speaker 5 (38:24):
Don't SOMETIMES i get the most gratifying phone CALL i
ever get it from a kid kept telling the, COACH
i get, it, MAN i appreciate you being being you,
know being, HARD i mean when you were.
Speaker 7 (38:34):
Sold and so.
Speaker 5 (38:35):
Forth that's the. Best that is the best phone call
a coach can.
Speaker 7 (38:39):
Get.
Speaker 4 (38:40):
Excellent, well that's a good place to leave. It, uh
BUT i know you're hard at work and your opener
is coming up fast like everybody's. Opener so, uh we'll
chat again next, week. Coach appreciate the, time all, Right
they talk to, You tobody and up next to number,
Two it's cold part of The Cat's pause And western Your.
Speaker 9 (38:59):
Chief Gary moore six thirty W.
Speaker 4 (40:53):
Welcome back to The big Bluee sider and joining us
now on THE Uk, beat newest member of the reporters
covering THE Uk beat from The Cat's Boss Cole. Park although,
call you've covered the beat for The Kentucky colonel for
quite a, while so it's not like you're coming in,
cold right.
Speaker 7 (41:11):
Right. YEAH i got started as a freshman at The
university Of, kentucky so it's probably about my fifth year
going on the, beat i'd, say.
Speaker 4 (41:17):
Well and a lot has happened in those five, years
including of course last season's disappointing. Year you were there
When Mark stoops talked to the Media monday in advance of.
Media it was Basically Mark stoops media day because of
the upcoming facial. Surgery he was looking at and didn't
want to be on, camera WHICH i can, understand you,
know with a bruised up face and. Sunglasses but, anyhow
(41:40):
was there anything in particular you took Away monday from
that news conference or was it pretty much falling in
line with what we get heard In atlanta and you
know here and.
Speaker 7 (41:50):
There, YEAH i, mean that wasn't too much to take
away from it. Yet obviously we haven't got to see
the players. Yet that'll come this. Weekend but there was
most a lot of the, same you, know a lot
of little things were in. There BUT i ended up
writing two stories about the press. Conference two things that
really did stick out to, Me and the first was
(42:11):
what he said surrounding revenue. Sharing you, know it was
a big point of emphasis recently with how much schools
are going to divide between football and. Basketball there was
that report that came out regarding the basketball, figures and
so Stoop scott, asked kind of point blank On, monday you,
know do you feel like the revenue sharing In kentucky
is going to be at a place where you're able
(42:31):
to be? Competitive and he said he. Did he seemed
very very excited about, that seemed very confident in. That
and you, know he, SAID i feel, like for one
of the first times really that she'll be able to
be on a pretty even playing field in THE. Sec
so that was really interesting to. Me expressed a lot
of excitement for this upcoming class of recruits that they'll
(42:52):
sign In, DECEMBER i, Believe, so you, KNOW i thought
that that was very interesting and we'll have to have
Passed Mitch barnhart about it On friday if you can
give us anything closer to. Specifics BUT i thought it
was really notable That Mark SUPs kind of put a
lot of that to bed with where the football team's
at and money. Wise and THEN i also wrote another
(43:13):
one about you, know it was very clear coming into
this season that calls out of the guy that the
staff has confidence and they went out and got him
after a GREAT fds. Season intern a word In San
antonio had act to see experience before, that BUT i
think we kind of saw last year at the end
of the season and coming into this year that there's
a clear, hope you, know that a guy Like Cutter
(43:35):
bully can be the future of the, program a quarterback
that they really. Develop SUPs kind of talks about the
quarterback situation a little, bit you, know said like if
we had a game right, Now zach would be the,
starter but that nobody's really kind of locked into that.
Spot who knows what's going to happen by week, one
and also kind of praised Bo allen a little bit
there for you, know being as he called a player
(43:57):
coach kind of, guy and you, know without saying in exact,
words pretty much said he's not going to be a
guy who gets too upset with his role and is
going to do what he can to help the team
and Support those are the two. Guys so a couple
interesting things there about the quarterbacks that were a story about,
that AND i was a story about the revenue. Sharing
and we'll see this weekend About Mitch, bonnhart the, coordinators the,
(44:19):
players see what other things come out, there.
Speaker 4 (44:22):
And they all talk On, friday and then of course
the fans get to go out and watch On saturday
On Fan. Day but getting back to your first story
about revenue, sharing and that was the first question To.
Stoops mark's story offered that up from The Herald, leader
And i'm like, YOU i couldn't help but notice That
stoops and this was kind of the way he was
(44:43):
In atlanta as. Well he almost perked, up you, know
because over the last two or three, years you, know
he's the pony. Up comment kind of stuck to, him
although he was just being, honest you, Know but just
the entire situation in college athletics was really in pair
based on the fact that there just weren't many guardrails in.
(45:04):
Place and if it's The kentuckys of the world and
a power conference in THE, sec but one of those
mid tier. Programs you, know you can Throw missouri in,
there you can Throw South carolina in, There but those
were the programs in peril when it came to the
amounts of money being, spent you, know in other. Places
(45:26):
but since there are these guardrails are more in. PLACE
i really think that the change In stoops's demeanor is.
Palpable it's gone to almost from dread to excited. Again
do you see?
Speaker 7 (45:38):
That? Oh, absolutely you, know he he seemed, extremely extremely you,
know energetic whenever that gets brought, up you, know happy
to talk about. It is THAT i put it my story.
Here i've got this one quote you, said if there's
some semblance of a cap it gives us a good fighting. Chance,
yeah you, KNOW i think it's kind of a lot
of what you talked about. There it's not That, kentucky
(46:00):
he has a, school doesn't have, money but when you're
looking at what's being given to football and you, know
raising that, money it's been pretty clear in the last
couple of years That kentucky's been a bit behind some
of those schools in THE sec that are super super
football crazy and super going all in on. That you,
know he even said, again you, know he, SAID i
don't like to talk about it as an. Excuse it
(46:21):
sounds like an, excuse but you, know it is what it.
Is that's the reality of the sport we're playing, in
and you know it is it is the reality of.
That when he first got here To, kentucky we still
Had i'm doing air quotes here with my, fingers but
amateurism in college. Sports and now we got the transfer
portal In, ilo revenue. SHARING i, mean it's a different.
(46:42):
Ballgame AND i think he, said you, KNOW i feel
like for the one of the first times that he
really feels like he has a.
Speaker 4 (46:50):
Chance, yeah and you, know there's never going to be
a completely level playing. Field we all know, this but
there are different there are varying levels of, level and
that's all they're looking.
Speaker 5 (46:59):
For.
Speaker 4 (47:00):
Really as we Talk Cole park of The, Cats pauls
part of the two four seven. Network he was there
When Mark stoops talked to the media On, monday and
we'll be There friday when the rest of the team
and the coordinators chat with the media all the official media.
Day through the, Years i've heard a lot of fans
AND i know there was somebody else On. Twitter so
(47:20):
there's no Reason kentucky can't be more competitive in THE.
Sec there are dozens of reasons Why kentucky because nobody
is backing. Up you, Know it's not Like georgia and
In alabama And florida are, saying, now we're good With,
florida let's there with, football let's work on something. Else
people are pouring more and more resources and energy into
(47:41):
football now than they ever had. Before BUT i always
try to remind people and myself of This Cole kentucky
basketball fans and people like the WHOLE da up through the,
years they wouldn't accept this kind of mediocrity in. Basketball,
well that's, true but it's a different. Animal kentucky basketball
fans believe that there's no reason why their team shouldn't
(48:03):
always be add or near the top of college, troops
despite the fact that more and more programs are throwing
more and more money at their basketball, programs and YET
uk fans think there's no reason they should give any
ground to anybody, else and yet they want the opposite
to be, true don't? They with? Football they believe, that
(48:25):
And god bless them, for you, know being. Optimistic but
it's just harder to make up ground and football is my,
point isn't.
Speaker 7 (48:32):
It? YEAH i mean, absolutely AND i kind of see
both sides. THERE i wrote a column a few years
back when the whole calitary. Stoops he, asked what's going?
On AND i, said you, know technically, speaking there's nothing
that is making it impossible For kentucky to be competitive in.
Both but it is like you, said you, know when
(48:52):
you look at, basketball there's those, expectations but more, importantly
there's there's that. History there's a precedent for. That you,
know you go back a star Is adolf threw up
And kentucky has always been a team who was expected
to be up. There and you, know you look at
football And stoops is now the winning as coaches a
few years, Ago but your second winning as coach is
a guy who's more famous for another, program and That's
(49:15):
Bear bryant what he did At. Alabama obviously we all
know that kind of how that. Went But kentucky football
really doesn't have that. History you, know After Bear. Bryant
there was a twenty five years in between bowl game
appears For, kentucky, right and you, know you look at
where the program was Before Mark, stoops and you, KNOW
i can agree with in principle there's no Reason kentucky
(49:38):
can't be up there in. Both but in practicality there
are lots of barriers and hurdles that Prohibit kentucky from
just immediately getting up there in. Both and you, Know
i'm not going to say it's impossible that it couldn't
happened one, day but it's going to take some, time
and it's going to take a lot of changes in the,
sport and you know it's possible it never really gets.
(49:58):
There but, YEAH i, mean it's just when you look
at the barriered jury and having especially in this new
revenue sharing, ara that we're coming up upon two programs
that you, know if you're going to try to invest
in football the way that some fans want them, to
you can't leave basketball to. Dry It's kentucky. Basketball you,
know that's not an option for. You and it's the
(50:19):
same as if a duke were to try, to you,
know invest a lot more into. Football you can't leave basketball.
Hanging you just can't.
Speaker 5 (50:24):
Do, that that's.
Speaker 7 (50:25):
Right so there's there's a lot of hurdles and there's
a lot of, obstacles and you, KNOW i do agree
that it's not as simple as just saying we need
to care about football, more we need to invest more in,
football because you've got to make concessions in order to do.
Speaker 4 (50:41):
That he Is cole Park he Covers Kentucky, SPORTS Uk
sports for The Cat's. Balls we'll come back and talk
more With cole in a minute here on The Big
Bone sider six THIRTY Wlap welcome. Back we're talking With
Cole parky is the beat writer for The Cats, paws
and we'll join us each and Every, wednesday As Aaron
gershan did schedules, permitting of, course and. Uh if you
(51:01):
go to the, website the two four seven website COVERING uk,
sports The Cat's pause, site you'll see stories From cole
on a lot of, things including the fact That Mark
stoops talked openly about the quarterback spot On monday and
somebody put it to. Him they put him basically held
his feet to the fire when they're a huge. Deal
but they, said if you played, tomorrow who'd be your starting,
(51:22):
quarterback and he Said Zach, calzatta which is not a. Surprise.
Uh AND i know a lot of People coley always
worry about the backup, quarterback you, know will this kid
will cut her bully be content with just sitting or
getting mop up duty this coming. Year BUT i Think,
calzada given his, experience is the logical, choice don't, You.
Speaker 7 (51:45):
Oh, ABSOLUTELY i. DO i, Mean i'm my. STORY i
pulled a quote from From Darryl bird's story where he
got to speak With, stoops.
Speaker 4 (51:52):
You, know one on.
Speaker 7 (51:53):
One stoups was pretty candid about. It he, Said we've
got a ton of faith and confidence And cutter. Bowlies
i'm not saying that it's, over but it would have
been hard for me to walk into this season with
a red shirt freshman only three games. Experience and you,
Know kindter technically has played in four, games but you
don't really count That florida game where you got in
for just a terrible. Situation so really and, truly the
(52:14):
guy that's played three games of college, football he's a
red shirt. Freshman that can't be your starting quarterback going
into the. Season it just can't, be especially coming off
a four and eight year where where you need to do.
Better And i'm personally not really worried About cutter in
that situation BECAUSE i think Everything stoops has said has
seemed to indicate that they're going into this with kind
(52:36):
of this mentality of we have two, quarterbacks and we're
going to try to use two quarterbacks if you, know
if they're where they need to. Be you, know he
said that they feel really good about both of them
and that right Now zach would be the guy That
za's probably a little bit more ready in this present.
Day but even, then he, said so we've still got
a lot of time left this, summer and you, know
(52:57):
before the first, game so who. Knows you, Know he's,
Like i'm not going to guarantee anybody's gonna be the
Starter week one Against. Toledo so it'll be interesting and
we'll get to see both of those guys on On
friday Or, SATURDAY i, believe and see how they together,
looking see if they passed the high, task as you.
Will but it wouldn't shock me at all if we,
(53:19):
see you, know a year where two of those quarterbacks
get a lot of. Reps and you, know going back
to what he said about Bo, allen there when he praised,
him he, said we can invest a ton of reps
in the top two, guys and he emphasized those top
two guys plural need a ton of reps continuity developing
that report with the receivers in THE o. Line SO i,
(53:41):
understand you, know people are worried That cutter could get
lost in the shuffle, there and you never know How
zach Cows lot is going to, be you, know has
THAT sec. Experience sure had a good season last, year
but it was in THE fcs with the infinite, word,
Right so you, KNOW i think that they're really going
into this season expecting to have two quarterbacks and you,
know whichever one is going to help them most in
(54:03):
the situation which everyone is most ready on a weekly,
basis is going to be the one that gets on the,
field you.
Speaker 4 (54:08):
Know and what everybody needs to, remember of, course is
that this kid played in THE sec and played, well
and As Jeremy jarman said on these, airwaves Yether, night
knows how to slay the. Dragon you, know was THE
qb when they be and he had a lot of
help of course when they Beat. Alabama my, Curiosity, cole
(54:28):
is how do they Use Cutter bowley as a. Backup
do they look to get him into games beyond just you,
know the last series of downs in either a mop
up win or a blowout.
Speaker 7 (54:43):
Loss you know What i'm, Saying, YEAH i, Understand AND
i think that'll be really really interesting to. SEE i
think we might be able to get you, know maybe
a little bit of insight into that this weekend and
we get to, see you, know some actual reps and
see how the how the team's coming. Together BUT i
PERSONALLY i would like to see, that you, Know AND
i also WOULD i think that there's some teams out
(55:04):
there that use two. Quarterbacks however the way they use,
them if one of them comes, in it's very obvious
what's going to, happen, right you. Know so so hopefully
it's not that kind of situation where it's, like, Oh
cutters in the, game it's going to be a. Run
LIKE i hope that's not kind of the situation we,
Have BUT i would like to, see you, know kind
Of Cutter bully get some more, reps whether that's in
the middle of the, game whether that's doing the second
(55:26):
half of a game even or whether that's you, know
starting the game and then that comes in at some point.
Too it's going to be interesting to see how they
do that, divide how they how they split that, up
and where both quarterbacks are at once the season gets.
Started and then you also have the question, of, okay,
well they're probably not going to use both of them
the same way Against toledo that they would week two
again still Miss so how are they going to use you,
(55:46):
know what kind of trust are they going to put
In cutter when you're in some of those bigger games
that you really need to win or that you know
would be a big win for the, program versus how
do you kind of use? Them you, know we saw
last year they pretty much gave, him gave him the
the rains Against Murray, state and THAT'S Sbs Murray, state you, know. Massive,
well BUT i think a lot of people are hoping
(56:07):
that it's not like that where, yeah we're gonna Play,
cutter but only when we're for sure what the result
is going to be in it doesn't.
Speaker 4 (56:14):
Matter right, Right? Yeah it with all due, Respect murray
was in a transition year into a new coach and
very likely between ONE a and ONE doublea was the
worst team In. America but you got to see the
athleticism of a Cutter. Bowl even though he kind of
laughed after the game about remember that run he? Had he,
Said i've never run that far in my. Life so
(56:36):
he will not be the SCRAMBLING. Qb we need to
remember That Cole park is joining. Us he is the
beat writer for The Catch. BOSS a couple of minutes
left With cole who will be covering the Football wildcats this.
Year Mark stoops Mentioned. Toledo somebody tried to get him
to talk about the conference, opener which is in week number,
two and, naturally like every coach In, america he's thinking
(56:56):
about that season. Opener and this is gonna be one
of the tougher season openers given the fact, That, Yeah
toledo's A mac, Team BUT i keep banging this drum.
CALL mac teams come in here and Give kentucky. Trouble
they have beaten The, wildcats they have pushed them. Around
Julian edelman came in here with they really good Kent
state team and Gave kentucky ALL i. Wanted And toledo
(57:17):
has been picked to win its. Conference and as you,
know THE mac is full of. Kids we either believe
they ought to be d one maybe used to be
d one or have developed late and now or as everybody's,
good well they're d one. Anyway but you, Know i'm
talking about power. Conferences so that's something to, remember isn't.
Speaker 5 (57:35):
It oh, yeah without a.
Speaker 7 (57:37):
Doubt AND i have to get some praise er speaking
my language there With Julian, edelman long Time patriots fan over.
Here so but uh, YEAH i mean, no you look
at the history Of tucky, football whether that's When stoops
first took over here or even you, know kind of
later in the tenure when things were going. BETTER mac
teams will give you. Trouble they're they're really sneaky and they're,
(58:00):
very very tough football teams to. Play they're you, know
you should win those games always if You're, kentucky but
it's not a guarantee the way some of those other games.
Are and some of those, games you, know they're really really,
scrappy and even games where you win by a large,
margin you kind of leave feeling, Like, okay well that
still wasn't as easy AS i feel like it should have.
Been that you, KNOW i still felt a little bit
(58:21):
nervous kind of leaving that. Game and you see that
almost every single year where there's one of THOSE mac
games where fans leave kind of with a nervous, chuckle almost, like,
YEAH i, mean we got the way we, needed But
i'm not sure THAT i like the way we look doing.
It SO i. Agree you, Know toledo is a very
very strong football team going into this. Season you know
they they could win THE mac And i'm not going
(58:44):
to SAY i, predicted but you win THE mac and
depending on how strong they end up. Being with the
way the system, is it's possible to get into The
College World playoffs as THE g five representative, there SO
i guess it's PROBABLY g. Six now it's A pac,
twelve but that's a bit of An if you say,
tuition it's you, know it's possible even if it is
(59:04):
A max, school you could be playing a playoff team
In week one Before.
Speaker 5 (59:08):
Ole myths even comes to.
Speaker 7 (59:09):
Down so it's kind of wild to say it that.
Way but you, know if If toledo does what they're
expected to do and wins THE, mac and you, know
a couple of things shift their, way the highest ranking
Non power conference team is guaranteed the, spot so it'll
be really interesting to. See AND i think that that's
going to be a lot better of a test than
some people give it credit. FOR i think it'll be
(59:30):
a better test than you, know no, disrespect BUT i
think it'll probably be a better test Than Southern myths
was last year to open the season right Before South,
carolina meaning the, Town and that's kind of what you.
Need you need a team that is going to challenge
you a little bit With Old myths coming to town
looking for revenge in week two after you've got to
win In oxford last. Year you know that's that's going
to be a team that's that's not going to overlook,
you not going to take it easy on you. Whatsoever
(59:51):
FIRST sec game and looking to get revenge and win
that they feel probably kept them out of the playoffs last.
Year so you know you'll have to you'll have to
take it very. Seriously Gets toledo And tlito's going to
give you everything they've.
Speaker 4 (01:00:02):
Got here Is Cole. Park he is the beat writer
for The cats pause and you can follow his work
at two four seven sports dot com and navigate to
The kentucky, page and also you can follow him On

Park pa r K E UNDERSCORE. Wsc all of my,
stories radioheads podcasts they get posted on, there so all
my work gets posted on, there And i'll take you

Speaker 4 (01:00:39):
Me thank, You. Sarah we'll see you On Media.
Speaker 7 (01:00:41):
DAY i appreciate.
Speaker 4 (01:00:42):
It up, Next West End Bureau Chief Gary moore on
six THIRTY Wlap welcome back to The Big Blue. Insider
joining us now as he does each and Every, wednesday schedule,
permitting is Our Western Bureau Chief Gary moore is at
the western end OF i sixty four over In La
louisville area and has a lot on his.
Speaker 2 (01:01:01):
Mind, well it's two guys in a six, pack you
and me and six. Swigs in, fact in our sixth
and final Swig, dick we're going to honor the anniversary
of one of my all time favorite movies with more
quotable lines than you can shake A Billy burrew At
Billy Billy. Billy but, first since you AND i last,
Spoke philly Superstar Bryce harper Told Commissioner Rob manfred face to.
(01:01:21):
Face quote you want to speak about, that you can
get the f out of our.
Speaker 4 (01:01:25):
Clubhouse.
Speaker 2 (01:01:26):
Unquote that refers to a salary cap that THE mlb
owners have wanted for, years And manford has been making
the rounds to clubhouses talking about threats to MLB's business
and ways to grow the. Game by the, way it's
a business that made twelve billion dollars last. Year But
harper clearly wasn't having, it especially after What manford had
(01:01:46):
said In atlanta last month that, quote maybe a change
in the system would be good for. Everybody, unquote horse.
Manure baseball union's the strongest pro sports union by. Far
all players contracts are, guaranteed unlow like THE nfl AND. Nba,
oh but they have salary. Caps smell something screwy. There
would not be surprised if the owners had been screaming At.
(01:02:07):
Manford you get in there and you get those clubhouse
and you talk about, this but don't say the word salary.
Cap harper, says IF mlb owners held firm to a,
cap players are not scared to lose one hundred and
sixty two. Games WHO i ask, you are we in
for something? Worse the nineteen ninety four and No World
series in a couple of.
Speaker 4 (01:02:23):
Years, well it could be because a lot of these
guys NOW i have a war chest that is far
beyond what they had back. Then but you, Know i've
had to come around on this a little bit because
one of my favorite column this Is mike De corsia
The Sporting, news, right And mike is you, know cursed
with a great sense of logic and, perspective and he
(01:02:47):
wrote a really interesting column about. THIS a guy Like Bryce, harper,
yeah he's going to be against the salary, cap there's
no question about. That he's a superstar relatively. Speaking but the,
course he made a a dozen good points about how
a salary cap might, help Including, gary and this shocked
me the. Most the, floor the ceiling is unbelievable for.
(01:03:09):
Baseball the floor is at times worse THAN, nhl which
has a salary. Cap so while the guys at the
top should have the same opinion as A Bryce, harper very,
quietly the guys at the bottom coming and, hey, look
they make three quarters of me in a. Year that's the.
Minimum you AND i could do pretty well with that
(01:03:31):
kind of. Money but when you're comparing other, leagues which you.
Should the floor For Major League baseball isn't what it should. Be.
Now where the owners come in you in a bad
way is they won't open the. Books they lie to
to the, media they lie to the fans, about, oh
we're not making any money. Garbage yes you. Are but
(01:03:53):
if cooler heads, PREVAILED i think honestly everybody could be.
Happy we'll see second.
Speaker 2 (01:04:00):
SWIG a couple Other Major League baseball. Notes trading deadline
tomorrow evening six Pm. Eastern outside of The Detroit, tigers
who lead THE Al central by nine, games just about
every other division has a pretty close pennant race going.
On in those TEAMS i think will be all be potential,
traders like The, dodgers who've already clinched a losing record For.
July and would you know that The dodgers have the
worst single month winning percentage that they've ever had Since
(01:04:22):
may twenty, thirteen and yet they still leave THE Nl
west by four, games probably going to sweep The reds.
Tonight also On. Sunday this Past, sunday The hall Of
fame added five new, members including one player who had
ten consecutive two hundred hit. Seasons ten Consecutive gold gloves
that's never been done, before probably never will be. Again
(01:04:44):
was a ten Time All, star three to eleven batting
average In, america three point fifty three In, japan and
yet was not a unanimous.
Speaker 4 (01:04:51):
Selection, that of, course Was Eachi.
Speaker 2 (01:04:53):
Row one gutlass cowardly baseball rider who's afraid to out
himself Kept Eachi row from being the second animous inducted
into The, Hall Marion rivera the. First SO i say
it's time for these baseball riders's veils to come, off
LIKE ncaa, voters be. Transparent otherwise you're left to, think,
WELL i guess this guy just must not Like. Asians
why else would he vote him.
Speaker 4 (01:05:14):
IN i couldn't agree. More and when you add in
this is what is staggering to, me all the hits
from his time in The Japan league's big. Leaguer he's
the hit, king Not Pete. Rose And i'm not advocating
for that given the level of pitching in one league versus.
ANOTHER i love The Japan league as we, know it's
pretty darn. Good. NO i, mean if anybody in recent
(01:05:38):
memory deserved to go in, unanimously this guy's skill. Level,
YEAH i didn't hit a lot of home, Runs so
what what are we crying now about the? Game too
many guys are hitting for, power not off guys hitting for.
Average this guy could put the ball anywhere in the.
Ballpark it seemed like any time he. Wanted, YES i
(01:05:58):
know they got him out six and a half times per,
ten but it seemed like he was automatic on offense
as you point, out and, defense and, man it's just
a shame that he spent so much time on The West.
Coast what if he played In New york Or boston
age old, argument.
Speaker 2 (01:06:17):
Third, swig DO i even have to? Ask are you
ready for some? Football of course we, are and whether
certain teams are remains to be. Seen but one month from,
Today august, thirtieth that's A, saturday twelve forty five pm
on THE sec, network Your university Of Kentucky wildcats Host
toledo in THE Sec. Network you've been talking about that a,
LOT i. Know and then at three, o'clock also on the,
(01:06:38):
THIRTIETH eku comes right over here To louisville for a
beat down and a nice paycheck from The. Cards that'll
be on THE acc. Network but before those, Games Miama
mater upstages both one week Before saturday, Night august twenty,
third seven pm down in BG wku Hosting Sam, houston
and that's going to be on THE Cbs Sports, net
one of the probably a few watchable games on the.
(01:07:00):
Weekend but even before all of, Those pro football as
soon as tomorrow night the Annual hall Of fame game
Kant ohio eight pm AND Bc chargers And. Lions and
BECAUSE i know you'll be making hourly wages, wagerings The
lions are a point and a half favorite for not
a real. Game not a real, game we're talking. Practice
(01:07:20):
SO i, asked will you make it past the first?
Speaker 4 (01:07:23):
Quarter probably, not but it will wet my beak as they,
Say Fan day's coming Up saturday FOR uk football, practice
and we the media can go On. Fridays so, yeah
it's getting. Close But i'm glad you mentioned Your toppers
because This toledo team coming. In you're, Right i've talked
a lot about how good this team is and can,
be has been picked to win THE mac second week
(01:07:45):
of the, Season toledo takes on Your. Toppers, yeah so
they get a heavy dose Of kentucky based teams this.
Year toppers beat them last year. Too, yeah fourth.
Speaker 2 (01:07:55):
Wig back to college football and SOMETHING i don't Think
i've ever asked you about so, far and being part
of THE uk broadcast team since what the Fifties Big.
Speaker 4 (01:08:04):
Ten The Big ten wants.
Speaker 2 (01:08:05):
A football playoff with four guaranteed, bids four for them
and THE, sec Two measley ones for THE acc and
The big. Twelve the highest ranked group of five will
get one and you'll like, it and three at large.
Bids looking at, you notre dame two, words this. Sucks
give me top four conference winners plus group of five
(01:08:25):
best conference, winners then the top eleven whoever they, are
or top. Seven you're going to keep it at. Twelve that's.
PLENTY i do not like four automatics and those two.
Automatics it doesn't take into account crummy or mediocre years
for the two big conferences and downplays the potential for the.
Rest it worked fine this, year and outside of fixing the,
seating just Like march, madness it ain't. Broke leave it
(01:08:48):
the f alone your.
Speaker 4 (01:08:49):
Thought you, Know indiana's taking a, hot a, heat which
it should for ducking out of a series With virginia
and dumbing down its. Schedule i'm opposed to any restructuring
a playoff that benefits a team that does. THAT i
think they got to figure out a way to reward
teams for playing tougher. Schedules and you know what you
(01:09:10):
mentioned THE ncate. Tournament that's what happened With March. Madness
AND i know it's apples and pineapples couldn't be more.
Different but they figured out a way to reward. Teams
they kept, saying you got to play. Somebody, okay what
if we play somebody and we, Lose, well there's got
to be that's gotta be taken into. Account AND i
would love to see that in the football playoff.
Speaker 2 (01:09:30):
Picture, fitzwigg did you hear the one about the reporter
From chicago who covered The bears for. Years she even
had her Own Bears UNLEASHED tv, show then went TO
espn and had to.
Speaker 4 (01:09:42):
Wear A packer shirt for a.
Speaker 2 (01:09:43):
Report apparently no gun has been found that was pointed
at her head to do. That Shae cornett was assigned
To Your land of oz Lambeau field for the Network's
Fifty states And Fifty days. Tour maybe, intentionally she did
her piece in A packers GREEN t, shirt then posted On. Instagram,
Quote i'm, Sorry bears, fans this was the HAND i
(01:10:05):
was Dealt. Unquote, PERSONALLY i would have asked for another.
Hand you being a poker, Player, no you can do.
That let me ask, You Dick, gabriel if tomorrow you
went to work FOR, espn you got sent To knoxville
and told you got to wear This vall shirt for your,
report your response would, BE i don't.
Speaker 4 (01:10:22):
Understand that's WHAT i would, say simply because having read
the book ON, espn you have two what is it
called these guys have all the fun or something like. That,
yeah there has been a rule in place AT espn
where anchors AND i gotta assume reporters could not do,
what for, instance you're. Doing. Now this is coming to
(01:10:42):
you listeners via a zoom. Call gary's wearing a long beach.
HAT i got A Green Bay PACKERS t. Shirt but
that's supposedly been against the rules AT. Espn you cannot
show any favoritism toward any. Team and that's a damn good.
Rule why they're making people do, this especially and Shake
RT's been on this, show you, know does it have
(01:11:04):
to do with the fact that she's a. WOMAN i
wonder about that this was at a, Place this was
at a place BY, espn both her wearing The Green bay,
tea and THEN i think all's fair if they make
her wear that, tea she should not be reprimanded for
posting in a bear. Shirt. Agreed sixth and final.
Speaker 2 (01:11:23):
Swig finally to that movie that alluded to. EARLIER i
know people have been, SAYING i can in, FACT i
can hear you all, thinking, well we're waiting.
Speaker 4 (01:11:30):
Forty five years.
Speaker 2 (01:11:31):
Ago Last friday At Gabriel july twenty, fifth nineteen, eighty
also A, FRIDAY i saw a movie not far from
where you live there In, lexington The South Park cinemas
movie that made me laugh way out. Loud then every year,
since it's in my top five movies of all. Time the,
one the, only the Original. Caddyshack no movie involving, golf
(01:11:51):
or golf as The scots called, it will ever, meet
much less, exceed the genius that Is. Caddyshack the Original
i'm talking about, here not that awful and forgettable. Sequel, smart,
funny like my all time favorite Movie Animal, house and
like that, Movie Caddie shacks creators had ties to the
brilliant National lampoon magazine and performance. Companies so many memorable
(01:12:13):
lines still make me smile.
Speaker 4 (01:12:14):
Today gunga gunga la.
Speaker 2 (01:12:16):
Gunga oh but it looks good on, you miss noon
and miss MISS i.
Speaker 4 (01:12:20):
Still hear that one in the golf.
Speaker 2 (01:12:21):
Tournaments by the, way you'll get nothing and like.
Speaker 4 (01:12:24):
It and of course the, biggie he's A cinderella, boy
tears in his, EYES i.
Speaker 2 (01:12:28):
Guess Entertainment weekly Reporter Chris Nasha wattie wrote a great,
Book Caddie, Shack The making of A Hollywood Cinderella, story
about the, movie which got mixed. Reviews people thought it
was going to be a. Bomb but you know, what
it's in my top five still five stars from.
Speaker 4 (01:12:43):
Me speaking of. Bomb as you well know you've read the.
Book they had to sneak the the scene where the
golf course, explodes, Right they had to sneak that because
they did not get permission to do. That and you,
know there were the people thought a plane had gone
down or there was a terrorist. Attack so many great.
Backstories The Chevy Chase Bill murray, scene it was ad
(01:13:04):
lib they added later because they realized they didn't have
him in a. Scene, Together every bit of the accolades
that that movie collects is, warranted is. Deserved and by the,
way that looks good on. You though improvised ad libbed
By Rodney. Dangerfield we'll come. Back but hot raids For
gary in just a minute here on The Big Bloon
sider six THIRTY. Wlap welcome back to The Big Blue.
(01:13:28):
Sider we're talking with Our Western bureau, Chief Gary. Moore
a couple of hot raids For. Gary. Gary North Carolina
university of has sold out tickets for the opener For
Bill belichick's debut and down In Chapel. Hill not just season,
tickets my, friend single game. Tickets they can't wait to
(01:13:50):
see what he puts on the. Field my question to you,
is and of Course belichick is not shy from saying
we are running this program like it's a pro. Franchise,
well you know as well AS i that the leash
is much shorter on coaches in The National Football. League
is this guy setting himself up for? Failure is he
(01:14:12):
a little too? Overconfident what do you think the fans
are going to see on opening?
Speaker 2 (01:14:16):
Day, well That's Labor day night AGAINST tcu National television.
Team yeah it. Is and then he's got a schedule
in his. Favor you, know after the fifth game Against,
clemson which is At North, carolina and that comes after
a bye, week they do not Play louisville OR smu
Or Georgia, tech Or miami or Pitt they've Got duke coming.
(01:14:37):
In but other than, that they've got a pretty easy.
Schedule so it's in his. Favor is he going to
run it like The patriots last couple of years which
weren't that? Great that's the question where The Tom brady.
Hears it's going to be intriguing to find, out But
i'm not surprised it's a.
Speaker 4 (01:14:54):
Sellout not only do they Have clemson at. Home as you,
said after an open, week how would you like to
match with your, Dabo you're going up Against Bill belichick
and he gets an extra week to prepare for. You,
yeah you know that's what's going to be. Interesting but,
yeah you're. Right they don't have to take on the
best teams in THE. Acc you don't have the. League,
(01:15:17):
well the league does sit your, schedule but it's not
like THE, nfl where if you have a great, season
you play a tougher. Schedule things like. That so it's
going to be. Fascinating our second Hot reid isn't really
a sports related, story but it. Can you can apply
it really to. Anything, people of, course love to vent
their spleen on social, media as we know about sports
(01:15:40):
and everything in. Life, well, recently someone Named diana posted
a review of an outback steakhouse near her house and
said this gave it one. Star, Said i'm absolutely. Livid
my husband drove all the way to pick up our
outback order and you people for got in all caps
(01:16:01):
the blooming onion excamation. Point that was the only THING i.
Wanted and then not long after she tweeted or posted
my face with five, stars my fat husband ate the
blooming onion in the car and, Lied i'm sorry AND
i don't know how to delete. Reviews that's got to
(01:16:23):
be one of the greatest. Posts and THEN i take
it all. Back and should sports fans not learn a
lesson from this to take in all the information you
can before you hit.
Speaker 2 (01:16:36):
Sinn don't tweet when you're. Emotional, okay calm down for a,
minute just just cool. It he ate a whole blooming
dick that's like two thousand calories right there in that.
Speaker 4 (01:16:46):
Thing, well she, said he's a fat. Husband well he
just got fatter if he ate that whole. Thing my.
GOSH i thought of two things WHEN i read. This
number one three think before you sind. RIGHT i don't
know if you remember, this but McDonald's had a brilliant
ad campaign. GOING i think it was during a summer
(01:17:07):
Involving french. Fries they showed somebody driving, home you, know
and doing what we all do if you're bringing home
food for somebody else and you're sampling the fries every.
Time they, said buy an extra bag just for the drive. Home.
Smart it's a brilliant. Idea the other thing was at
The Outback bowl Where kentucky Played january, one nineteen ninety,
(01:17:29):
Nine Tim couch and Now mummy Versus Penn state And Joe.
Paterno they brought out a bloomin onion in the press
box at The Outback. Bowl during, pregame which essentially was around,
lunchtime they had put out a little bit of, food
and then right before kickoff they added a bloomin. Onion
(01:17:50):
and by NOW i had left the booth That i'm
on the, field AND i heard everybody talking about. It
And Tom leach to this day remembers the aroma of
the boom and. ONION i didn't get any by the
time it got the, halftime he. Didn't it was all.
Gone the bloom and onion may be more seductive than
McDonald's fries could. BE i, like, LOOK i like.
Speaker 2 (01:18:14):
Onions they don't like, me they hate. Me don't walk behind. Me,
okay that's All i'm.
Speaker 4 (01:18:21):
Saying, well there there's more than one kind of. Onion
they all hate, you the yellow onion and the purple.
Onion and, yeah all you pay for it within minutes
