a Friday, because well, we need to talk some basketball.
We talked football all week, but and we're going to
talk NFL a little bit later on with Billy Rutledge.

up on Facebook when I announced that we had adopted
her and named her, and he proclaimed that one of
the greatest names ever.

But I love try to name so I always try
to name of late pets after people whatever, although I
had a dog that at the time it was a
I was dating a different lady and she suggested, you know, yes,

Twenty five years ago, she suggested Derby, and I thought.

That was a great name for my wife. Go ahead,

Yeah, Susan actually had a your wife, Yes, sorry, my
wife actually had a little miniature docs and that's why
we have now a miniature docs. And I swore I
would never have little dogs. And then you get married
and you're like, okay, and then you get one. You're like, oh,
this is the greatest thing in the world, except for
all the barking and the using the bathroom inside. He's learning.

He's almost two. He's still but almost two. They are
the most docss themselves are the most And Susan knew this,
by the way, didn't tell me this part. They are.
They are widely known as the most stubborn breed there is.

I tell you what great Pyrenees run. My goodness, well
of the smaller dogs, I can see that.

He I mean, I've had dogs like okay, give me that,
give me that, you know, grab something that I was
supposed to have. And like even yesterday he gets a
tomato out of the garden and he's eating it, and
I'm like, and I'm chasing him, and you and and
to describe. Sometimes he'll when he knows I'm mad, and
when he knows he needs to lay down, he'll he'll
kind of lay down and cower and let me pick
him up when I'm chasing him. But yeah. But anyway,

Susan's first one of her first mentr docsins, which is
the reason we have Joanah. Now is her name her?
I think it was her was Derby. She named her Derby.
And forget the other one's name. The other one might
have been with the ugliest dogs I've ever seen in
my life. I'm sure she shows you the picture all
the time. A Hey, seriously, you've got a heart of
goal to have adopted that dog, because because I can't

imagine anyone went into a kennel or humane society and
looked at this dog and thought, mommy, daddy, that's what
that's what we want. We want the ugliest dogs. Listen
with Thursday's Child, which is which, which you know, is
how we got my sisters. We adopted them through thursday Child,

which special needs adoption program. We're talking about kids. No,
we're talking about kids now. Sorry, I mean it's an
awkward transition, but when it comes to adoption, the older
kids are the ones that you know, it's it's one
of these sad realities of life. Not to start to
show on a downer, but it's like when you talk
about special needs adoption, Okay, these are already kids with

special needs, so they're one of the last ones to
be considered for adoption by people looking at adopting. And
then it's the older kids that get adopted less right
because parents perspective, Parents who either can't have kids or
feel they're called to adoption, they want to adopt, you know,
kids that are younger, because they feel like they can
have a bigger impact. Exactly fair enough, but you know,

they're looking for more of a traditional family experience. Yeah,
that's a great word for word for it, all of
which I get. But the sad truth of the matter
is is that the older kids are the one than
when they hit thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, they're the ones that
are waiting and desperately wanting to be adopted and nobody
really considering them, and and and it's it's one of

those things because because Ryan Lemon and I have been
involved with SNAP for years, my mom and dad adopted
two girls that were three and four years old when
we first moved up to Lexington. But I don't know,
it just got me thinking that when it comes to dogs,
the same thing with humans. When you adopt something, we
tend to we tend to be drawn towards the cutest,
the puppies, the little ones. It's the older dogs, the

older kids. When we think about bringing them into our homes,
it's it's we don't. We don't think about the ones
that might need it more than the others right now, so,
you know, and just.

To wrap up dogs and get to basketball.

Uh, we do have another dog to crib from, Dave Berry,
the emergency backup dog, you know.

But that's Zarah. She's a rat terryer. I think my
wife keeps calling her a shihuahuah.

But she's upstairs. Now we're in the garage. Uh, my
wife had our chair just for her.

She burrows under a blanket, yep. And uh, and she's
a yapper, you know. The the delivery man comes, she
protects from the delivery man by yelling.

Does she not protect you from every memories?

But Zarah's backstory was this. She lived in a meth house.
She was owned by a myth dealer. Somebody rescued her
from the meth lab and Cindy saw her own line.
And so she's with us now, your wife, Your wife's
got big heart, she does all right.

Well, one more thing though, okay, and that is that
that I love the idea of naming dogs after people too,
but not real people. I just loved the idea of
people names. Like when I had Henry, there was a
great name names like Henry, middle name George, Frank. My
first dogs and my first dog ever was named Frank.
And then Jonah came pre named Jonah. Jonah was given

a puppy name that we could change once we bought him,
and I was like no, because I I used to
have Elijah because I love the idea of name and
naming my dogs after biblical characters too, so Jonah was perfect.

I saw a bird one's named Dwayne.

That's funny. That's good.

Yeah, it's a little bitty bird.

That's why Henry was always funny to me. And then
after that war off, it was just Henry because that's
just Henry.

Well one of the reasons that we we dragged Cameron

It feels like it, but it does feel like it

are your first impressions?

Well, to your point, it feels like a brand new team.
I mean, I look out there and I see Trent Noah,
I see Brandon Garrison, Uh, I see Colin and I'm
trying to think of us to us a Walker Walker Horn,
I'm not sure who else? Oh, wait, obviously is anybody else.

We've got five guys that are old and and and
and then everybody else is new. And I tell you,
I'll tell you this too. And maybe this is just
the state of college basketball now as far as a
number of scholarships and how that works. But you look
at on the court, there's seventy five guys out there playing.
I mean, you take you take coaches, GA's managers. Oh,
by the way, let me tell you this. I was
sitting next to j p Lebns yesterday watching practice yesterday

was like you had Jimmy dan Connor was there, dwank Or,
I'm sorry, Jack was there, Jack Gibbons was there. Let's see,
Jim Lamaster was there.

I know I was sitting there thinking as everybody walked
in and Sean Woody was there Shawn Wood showed up.
So I mean we had, like I wouldn't say who's
who of former Kentucky players, but a let's say a
line up. Let's say a lineup of former Kentucky players
a practice. So J p Lebans are sitting next to
each other and JP notes this thing. He goes, he goes, Cam,
look look at these Look at these dudes out here

that are not players. They're managers, right, he goes watch them.
So I started watching them. I'm like, yeah, And the
point was, is that no offense to my managers. Okay,
I love my managers. You know this. My manas were
my best friends. Right. They were not basketball players in
the least they might have played in first grade and
that's it. Half of them were barely athletes. No fence

to any of them. I love him dearly. The people,
the guys they have that are managers on this team
can get out there and guard and turn our point guards. Now,
I don't I'm not saying they're anywhere close to being
as talented as ours. Ours. Our team is our players,
but they're good enough to be able to offer them
a little bit of resistance. Yes, so you've got fifteen

guys on the team. Then you've got this. We've got
a new GA. I believe his name is McKay that
that McHale brought in, Michael McLean brought in or found.
This dude is six', ten nothing but. Muscle looks like
A i, mean, look he looks like a who's that
guy that used to play for The WASHINGTON nba? Team

just big stat. Guy he's still trying to. PLAY i
think SOMEWHERE i know this is this is like just
a few years. Ago wasn't too long, ago BUT i
mean he was nothing but. Shoulder this guy's. Huge so
it's like Having Winston bennett for us out there beating
the tar out Of Antoine. Walker this dude is a. Gay,
yes he was an assistant. COACH i, mean and he
would he would get in, there And winston was all,

muscle or he is all. Muscle he'd get out there
and just frustrate the heck out of everybody because he'd
do nothing but value. Intentionally and then the coaches would be,
like that's, anything because the whole point was to teach
you to play through the, foul to play through the,
contact and so but watching all of these managers who
can you, KNOW i wouldn't even say give these guys
a run for the, money but they can offer them
some resistance in during drill time that we didn't really.

HAVE i, mean it was just fascinating to. Watch but
those five GUYS i think are the ones that are
left over last. Year everybody else is new And i'm
still trying to put names with. Numbers but BUT i
will tell you, this and we get into this in

one of the most and then we don't have a yelling.

THINK i don't think that's why it was, There but
there was definitely. That you could definitely tell. That, okay
like the opening, drills like all the drills that the guys.
Do so the way practice works is you've got guys
out there basically doing WHAT i would call individual instruction
before practice. Starts. Right some of them are doing them with,
coaches some of them are doing without, coaches some of
them just have managers rebounding for. Him and they're just

getting shots. Up but again it's different than WHAT i
expected WHEN i became a, walkout which is, yeah individual
instruction or getting your shots. Up isn't you? Shooting someone
passes you the, ball you, shoot passion ball you. Shoot, No,
no it's full, speed game speed stuff where you, know,
yeah there might be that element of you're just getting
shots up from the corner from the three point, line

but it's game speed and. Crills, yeah and so there's
some intensity there and then you, know and then they
might start doing some. Slide, basically it's all warm up, stuff,
right it's getting the getting blood. Flow so When mark shows,
up because he's, upstairs and this is exactly how the
How i'm sure a lot of coaches do How coach
p used to. Do for, sure the assistant coach would
be down on the, court they'd be getting everybody. Everything

we'd already be, stretched we'd be getting, warm be doing
some warm up. Drills then the man would show. Up
and once the man shows, up everything gets, serious right
because there's still conversations going. On but Once pope shows,
up everything kind of, like all, right now it's. Business
And pope shows, up they do a quick, huddle he
kind of goes. OVER i guess probably the practice. Plan

it's one of those things where you've been to practice
a couple of times where you're, like whether it was
cal or whether It's. POPE i just wish as a
spectator of, practice right and as someone who's there as
part of my job WITH, jmi you, know to get
some insights THAT i can talk about during the pregame

right it's not helping me. Any so it's like one
of those THINGS i WAS i. WAS i was teasing
with somebody. Yesterday it may have BEEN jp WERE i was, Like,
OH i was sitting next to A nike, rep the
guy that basically the head Of nike for college, basketball
women's and. Men's his name Was, mike very nice guy
AND i just met him. Yesterday he AND i were
sitting there And i'm asking all kinds of questions And

whistle he stops, action and he's he's getting on him
a little. Bit he's not, yelling he's getting on a little,
bit And i'm, like can we can we put a
microphone on this? GUY i can't. HEAR i, mean he's
standing with his back to me on the on to
all of us really on this side of the, court
but he's talking to his team and he doesn't give
two cents worth whether or not we hear what he.

Says and he's not trying to hide, anything but it's
just like he's not making any effort to allow us
to hear. It And i'm sitting there, saying it'd be
nice IF i could hear what you were. SAYING i,
mean could you please just just can you turn things
around so you're yelling this way at us because the
things that he's, SAYING i THINK i think are. Important
it certainly are for me to, know, Like, okay this

is something he's focusing. On this is, look this is
what this is What Coach pope was really getting on.
Yesterday but there were a couple of times where you,
know like they've got this one drill AND i forget
what they call, it but a lot of people are
familiar with. It we're it's basically they put two minutes
on the clock and it's layups and three pointers and
they've got to get they've got to make like in two,

minutes going full, speed full, court round kind of round
robin kind of. Thing you, know you go down one,
court you need to shoot a three year, layup and
it depends on what what what part of the drill
you're in and then you get at the end of that,
line and then you wait maybe ten, seconds you get your,
breath and then you got to go full speed down
the other. Way so it's everybody going and you got
to GET i think the goal is around one hundred

and thirty something. Points and the first two times they did,
it they didn't make. It and and this is this
is not something that's. Easy it's not something that's. Hard
it's something that's it's just typically you, know you don't
always get it done the first, try but you don't
you don't move on until you get it done kind of.
Thing And Mark mark at one point and it was

Right they were handing out the practice plan to everybody

what they're doing is if you attend, practice they're handing
out a bottle OF i, mean a manager is. IMMEDIATELY
i mean to, me it just speaks to the overall
excellence in every aspect of the program That mark's brought
to the. Program so it doesn't matter who you, are

why you're, there if you're allowed to be, there and
you've been approved to be there watching, practice a manager
runs up to you with a bottle of water and
a piece of paper that has the guys guys, pictures
names and numbers on. It and then on the flip

This then you're trying to figure, out, okay what part

mean practice was so So mark's getting on about this one.
Drill it's, like, guys we'll be here all. Day we
will do this drill until you get the goal because
we will not fall short of our. Goals AND i
mean the next, time they not only got, it they
destroyed what THE i. Mean and to me it was almost,

like all, right this was just a matter of. Focus
AND i think To mark that's what it was. Too it's, like, okay,
look we are four weeks into this kind of. PRACTICE
i think since school has, started maybe something like, that
and it's like you get to this point, where, man
you're doing a lot of running and it's an everyday,
thing and it's an every day two and a half hour,
thing and you just show up and it's not that
you're not intense and you're not, focused but, men you

can get into the same drill sometimes it just kind
of in your brain half. Hearted AND i think that's
what they were. Doing they weren't, focused and that's Why
mark had to get on a little. Bit AND i
mean that next that next time if they have to
get one hundred and. THIRTY i looked up at the.

Wow so they didn't just beat, it they blew it,

Away henry was a part of my life for thirteen.

YEARS i mean literally one of the greatest DOGS i ever,
had which is hard to say Because, jonah a completely
different kind of, dog is one of THE i, MEAN
i JUST i just love you AND i both love our.

kind of a wood cut. Out it's only like twenty
Bucks i've. Seen and it's got a place for their,

name their. LIFESPAN a nice little dog quote that you
can come up with. THAT i found one yesterday that
SAID i think it was A i don't know who,
quote but it was something something about people question whether
dogs will be in. HEAVEN i guarantee you there will.

that was apropos of my my thirteen year old oldener
tree for passing away and so and then right right
