Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, it's sick, Gabriel. I am out today because quite frankly,
I'm having some surgery to take care of some skin cancer.
That's right, and it, in fact is the second time
for me, and I've got one more coming up. So
I wanted to share that with you to say, please
get yourself checked out. Go to a dermatologist. Even if
you don't think you've got anything going on, you just might.
(00:21):
And that's what happened with me, and they caught it early,
Thank goodness. Today it's the Best of the Big Blue
Insider and on core performance for Cameron Mills. He came
by the garage the other day to talk about the
basketball Wold Cat. So here it is on the Best
of the Big Blue Insider and please get yourself checked
out by a dermatologist. Camer Mills is in the garage.
(00:43):
I forced him to come over here because well, that's true.
You like coming over.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
I love coming over here. I used to love coming
over here more so because the star.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
Yeah Bark Star. We had to say goodbye to her.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
I did not know her first name was bart Bark.
I told you that, No, that's brilliant. Well I knew,
I knew you had an infinity for Bart's and I
knew she was named after Bart Star, but I did
not know if his name was Bark. That's great.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
The great Chuck Culpeper hit me up on hit me
up on on Facebook when I announced that we had
adopted her and named her, and he proclaimed that one
of the greatest names ever.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
I agree with him. I agree, But if Chuck Culpeper
is proclaiming it, then that that carries much more.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
Exact me or whoever. But I love try to name
so same. I always try to name of late pets
after people whatever. Although I had a dog that at
the time it was a I was dating a different
lady and she suggested, yes, this is many many instance.
(01:41):
Twenty five years ago she suggested Derby, and I thought.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
That was a great name for my wife. Go ahead
and finish your story. I'll tell you know.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
I was going to say that I had a I
had a green and gold parakeet packers named Vince for Lombardi,
had a blue and white one Kyle for Comys. Exactly
so different.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
I don't know that you should be naming your pets
after people you covered?
Speaker 1 (02:08):
Why not? Kyle's a friend now I covered you.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
Yeah, I don't see a pet in your name, Cameron.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
We'll give it time.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
All.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
When we got Star, Cindy suggested I name him name
her after a packer. And after she suggested, actually Bart Starr.
So amazingly and instantly I came up. I said, okay,
but it's going to.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
Be Bart Star. That's good. So you see that that
that that's the creativeness of somebody in writing.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
Well, okay, I'll take that. I'll accept that.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Yeah, Susan actually had a wife. Yes, sorry, my wife
actually had a little miniature docs And that's why we
have now a miniature Docs. And I swore I would
never have little dogs. And then you get married and
you're like, okay, and then you get one. You're like, oh,
this is the greatest thing in the world, except for
all the barking and using the bathroom inside. He's learning.
(02:59):
He almost two, he's still almost too. They are the
most docsins themselves are the most And Susan knew this,
by the way, didn't tell me this part. They are.
They are widely known as the most stubborn breed there is.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
I tell you what great pyrenees run. My goodness, Well,
the smaller dogs I can see that he.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
I mean, I've had dogs like, okay, give me that,
give me that, you know, grab something that I was
supposed to have, And like even yesterday he gets a
tomato out of the garden and he's eating it, and
I'm like, and I'm chasing him all and you and
and justcrid. Sometimes he'll when he knows I'm mad, and
when he knows he needs to lay down, he'll he'll
kind of lay down and cower and let me pick
him up when I'm chasing him. But yeah, but anyway,
(03:43):
Susan's first one of her first mentr docsins, which is
the reason we have Joanah. Now is her name? I
think it was a her was Derby. She named her Derby,
and I forget the other one's name. Yeah, the other
one might have been with the ugliest dogs I've ever
seen in my life. I'm sure she shows the picture
all the time about hey, seriously, you've got a heart
of goal to have adopted that dog, because because I
(04:05):
can't imagine anyone went into a kennel or humane society
and looked at this dog and thought, mommy, daddy, that's
what that's what we want. We want the ugliest dogs
listen with Thursday's Child, which is which you know, is
how we got my sisters. We adopted them through Thursday Child,
(04:27):
which is special needs adoption program. We're talking about kids now.
We're talking about kids now. Sorry, I mean it's an
awkward transition. But when it comes to adoption, the older
kids are the ones that you know, it's it's on
the sad realities of life. Not to start the show
on the downer, but it's like when you talk about
special needs adoption, Okay, these are already kids with special needs,
(04:49):
so they're one of the last ones to be considered
for adoption by people looking at adopting. And then it's
the older kids that get adopted less because parents perspective, parents,
you either can't have kids or filled they're called to adoption.
They want to adopt, you know, kids that are younger
because they feel like they can have a bigger impact
exactly fair enough. You know, they're looking for more of
(05:10):
a traditional family experience. Yeah, that's a great word for
word for it, all of which I get. But the
sad truth of the matter is is that the older
kids are the one than when they hit thirteen, fourteen, fifteen,
they're the ones that are waiting and desperately wanting to
be adopted and nobody's really considering them. And it's it's
one of those things because because Ryan Lemon and I
(05:31):
have been involved with SNAP for years, my mom and
dad adopted two girls that were three and four years
old when we first moved up to Lexington. But I
don't know, it just got me thinking that when it
comes to dogs, the same thing with humans. When you
adopt something, we tend to be drawn towards the cutest,
the puppies, the little ones. It's the older dogs, the
(05:52):
older kids. When we think about bringing them into our homes.
It's it's we don't think about the ones that might
need it more than the others right right now.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
So, you know, just to wrap up dogs and get
the basketball. We do have another dog to crib from,
Dave Berry, the emergency backup dog, you know. But that's Zarah.
She's a rat terrier. I think my wife keeps calling
her a shiuahwah. But she's upstairs now, we're in the garage. Uh,
my wife had a chair just for her. She burrows
(06:21):
under a blanket and uh and she's a yapper, you know.
The delivery man comes, she protects us from the delivery
man by yelling at.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
Does she not protect you from every everything? Years?
Speaker 1 (06:32):
That's right. But Zara's backstory was this. She lived in
a meth house. She was owned by a myth dealer.
Somebody rescued her from the meth lab and Cindy saw
her own line. And so she's with us now you
watch that she does.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
All right, we'll talk more. One more thing though, okay,
and that is that that I love the idea of
naming dogs after people too, but not real people. I
just love the idea of people names. Like when I
had Henry. Yeah, and there was a great name names
like Henry. Middle name George Frank. My first docs and
my first dog ever was named Frank. And then Jonah
came pre named Jonah. Jonah was given a puppy name
(07:11):
that we could change once we bought him. And I
was like no, because I used to have Elijah. Because
I love the idea name and name and my dogs
after biblical characters too, so Jonah was perfect.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
I saw a bird one's named Dwayne.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
That's funny, that's good.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
Yeah, it's a little bitty burden.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
That's why Henry was always funny to me, and then
after that war off, it was just Henry, because that's
just Henry, you know, all right.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
Well, one of the reasons that we we dragged Cameron.
And they haven't seen you in a while.
Speaker 2 (07:38):
First of all, but you've been the summer.
Speaker 1 (07:40):
You've been slipping, You've been slipping over to practice. I have.
And it's not an entirely new team like last year.
It feels like it, but it does feel like it,
doesn't it. As we wrap up segment number one, what
are your first impressions?
Speaker 2 (07:56):
Well, to your point, it feels like a brand new team.
I mean, I look out there and I see Trent Noah,
I see Brandon Garrison, I see Colin and I'm trying
to think of us to us see a Walker Walker Horn.
I'm not sure who else? I say, oh, oh wait, obviously, yeah,
is there anybody else? We got five guys that are
(08:18):
old and and and and then everybody else is new.
And I tell you, I'll tell you this too. And
maybe this is just the state of college basketball now
as far as number of scholarships and how that works.
But you look at on the court, there's seventy five
guys out there playing. I mean you take you take coaches,
gas managers. Oh, by the way, let me tell you this.
I was sitting next to J. P. Blebns yesterday watching practice.
We yesterday was like you had Jimmy did and Connor
(08:41):
was there? Dwank or I'm sorry, Jack was there? Jack
Gibbons was there. Uh, let's see, Jim Lamaster was there, starlight.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
I know.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
I was sitting there thinking as everybody walked in and
Sean Woody was there. Shawn wood showed up. So I
mean we had like I wouldn't say who's who of
former Kentucky players, but a a A let's say a
line up. Let's say a lineup of former Kentucky players
a practice. So J. P. Blevans are sitting next to
each other and JP notes this thing. He goes, he goes, cam,
look at look at these Look at these dudes out
(09:11):
here that are not players, They're managers, right, he goes
watch them. So I start watching them. I'm like, yeah,
And the point was is that no offense to my managers? Okay,
I love my managers. You know this. My managers were
my best friends. Right. They were not basketball players in
the least they might have played in first grade and
that's it. Half of them were barely athletes. No fens
(09:33):
to any of them. I love them dearly. The people.
The guys they have that are managers on this team
can get out there and guard and turn our point guards. Now,
I don't I'm not saying they're anywhere close to being
as talented as our as our as our team is,
our players, but they're good enough to be able to
offer them a little bit of resistance. Yes, so you've
(09:55):
got fifteen guys on the team, then you've got this.
We've got a new GA. I believe his name's McKay.
That that McHale brought in, Michail McLean brought in or found.
This dude is six', ten nothing but. Muscle looks like
A i, mean, look he looks like a who's that
guy that used to play for The washington UH nba?
(10:19):
Team just big stat. Guy he's still trying to. PLAY
i think SOMEWHERE i don't know this Is this is
like just a few years. Ago wasn't too long, ago
BUT i mean he was nothing but. Shoulders this guy's.
Huge so it's like Having Winston bennett for us out
there beating the tar out Of Antoine. Walker this dude
is A Ka yes he. Was he was assistant, COACH i,
mean and he would he would get in there And
(10:39):
winston was all, muscle or it is all. Muscle he'd
get out there and just frustrate the heck out of
everybody because he'd do nothing but value. Intentionally and then
the coaches would be, like that's, anything because the whole
point was to teach you to play through the, foul
to play through the, contact and so but watching all
of these, managers who can you, KNOW i wouldn't even,
say give these guys a run for the, money but
they can offer them some resistance in during drill time
(11:02):
that we don't really. HAVE i, mean it was just
fascinating to. Watch but those five GUYS i think are
the ones that are left over last. Year everybody else
is new And i'm still trying to put names with.
Numbers all, Right BUT i will tell you, this and
we can get into this in the next. Segment yesterday's,
PRACTICE i, mean might have been one of the Most
and then we don't have a yelling. Coach remember, now
(11:24):
he will, yell but this isn't the coach THAT i
had that will only yell, right yesterday's practice one of
the most intense Practices i've. Seen while all, right.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
Well we will come back and start with that in
our next. Segment Cameron mills in the garage here on
The Big Blue sider six thirty. Wlap, hey it's, Stick.
Gabriel i'm often they having surgery to have some skin
cancer taken care. Of please take care of yourself and
enjoy the best of The Big Blue. Insider Cameron mills
is in the garage because we are. Talking Kentucky Basketball
(11:55):
Pro day is coming, Up Blue white is coming, Up
madness is coming. Up it's that time of. Year we
have not forsaken, football but we need to get a
rundown From cam on what's been going on because he
has been going to. Practice and before the break you
said the practice you went, TO i guess it would
be as we take.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
On Wednes wednesday was one of the more.
Speaker 1 (12:13):
Intense is this because AND i wanted to get into
this with you. Immediately Mark pope admitted that he, Said i'm.
Twisted i'm one of these coaches who likes offense over,
defense where your coach and the previous coach everything was, defense,
Defense and we'll get to the. Offense but, uh, yeah
But mark did it in reverse order last year and
(12:35):
had to play catch up with. Defense now he says
he's starting with. Defense is that why the intensity was?
There you?
Speaker 2 (12:41):
THINK i don't think that's why it was, There but
there was definitely that you could definitely tell. That, okay
like the opening, drills like all the drills that the guys.
Do so the way practice works is you've got guys
out there basically doing WHAT i would call individual instruction
before practice. Starts. Right some of them are doing them with,
coaches some of them are doing without. Coaches some of
them just have managers rebounding for, him and they're just
(13:02):
getting shots. Up and but, again it's different than WHAT
i expected WHEN i became a walk, at which, is,
yeah individual instruction or getting your shots. Up isn't you
shooting someone passes you the, ball you, shoot passion ball you? Shoot, no, no,
no it's full, speed game speed stuff where you, know,
yeah there might be that element of you're just getting
shots up from the corner from the three point, line
(13:24):
but it's game speed and. Crills, yeah and and and
so there's some intensity there and then you, know and
then they might start doing some. Slide, basically it's all
warm up, stuff, right it's getting the it's getting the blood.
Flow so When mark shows, up because he's, upstairs and
this is exactly how the How i'm sure a lot
of coaches do How coach p used to. Do for,
sure the assistant coach would be down on the, court
they'd be getting everybody. Everything we'd already be, stretched we'd
(13:47):
be getting, warm be doing some warm up. Drills then
the man would show. Up and once the man shows,
up everything gets, serious right because there's still conversations going.
On but once Once pope shows, up everything kind of,
like all, right now it's. Business And pope shows, up
they do a quick, huddle he kind of goes. OVER
i guess probably the practice. Plan it's one of those
things where you've been to practice a couple of times
(14:07):
where you're, like whether it was cal or whether It's.
POPE i just wish as a spectator of, practice right
and as someone who's there as part of my job WITH,
jmi you, know to get some insights THAT i can
talk about during the pregame show for the for the
for THE Uk healthcare practice supports. Stuff but IF i
cannot hear the head coach talk, right it's not helping
(14:30):
me Any so it's like one of those THINGS i
WAS i WAS i was teasing with somebody. Yesterday it
may have BEEN jp WHERE i was, like, OH i
was sitting next to A nike, rep the guy that
basically the head Of nike for college, basketball women's and.
Men's his name Was. Mike very nice, guy AND i
just met him. Yesterday he AND i were sitting there
And i'm asking all kinds of questions And i'm and
at one, Point mark is, like he blows the, whistle
(14:52):
he stops, action and he's he's getting on aim a little.
Bit he's not, yelling he's getting on a little. Bit
And i'm, like can we can we put a microphone
on this? GUY I i can't. HEAR i, mean he's
standing with his back to, me on the on to
all of us really on this side of the, court
but he's talking to his team and he doesn't give
two cents worth whether or not we hear what he.
Says and he's not trying to hide, anything but it's
(15:12):
just like he's not making any effort to allow us
to hear. It And i'm sitting there saying it'd be
nice IF i could hear what you were. SAYING i,
mean could you please just just can you turn things
around so you're yelling this way at us because the
things that he's, SAYING i, THINK i think are. Important
it certainly are for me to, know, Like, okay this
is something he's focusing. On this is, look this is
(15:32):
what this is What Coach pope was really getting on.
Yesterday but there were a couple of times where you,
know like they've got this one drill AND i forget
what they call, it but a lot of people are
familiar with. It we're's, basically they put two minutes on
the clock and it's layups and three, pointers and they've
got to get they've got to make like in two,
minutes going full, speed full, court round kind of round
(15:53):
robin kind of. Thing you, know you go down one,
court you need to shoot a three year, layup and
it depends on what what what part of the drill you're,
In and then you get at the end of that
line and then you wait maybe ten, seconds you get your,
breath and then you got to go full speed down
the other. Way so it's everybody going and you got
to GET i think the goal is around one hundred
and thirty something, points and the first two times they did,
(16:15):
it they didn't make. It and and and this is
this is not something that's. Easy it's not something that's.
Hard it's something that it's just, typically you, know you
don't always get it done the first, try but you
don't you don't move on until you get it done
kind of. Thing And Mark mark at one, point and
it was the only real TIME i saw him. Yesterday
(16:36):
WHAT i would Say mark lose is. Cool now When
mark loses is. Cool this is not what everyone would
consider losing your, cool Like. Mark it's like the difference
Between patino And Tubby smith when he came. In it's
like When coach p lost his. School that's one. Thing
When tubby lost his. School you sit there to understand
What patino did when he lost his, school and you're,
like is that it is? He is he? Done is? That?
Speaker 4 (16:55):
Is?
Speaker 2 (16:55):
That is? That the is that The tyrade And tubby
would go into some, tirades but it was never as
is Is Patino pope's tirades Are it's one of those
things where and this is this is all a. Lot tubby,
too is like when he lost his. Cool things got
real tense because he very rarely loses his, school so you.
Knew it's like you know when mom and dad aren't,
(17:17):
yellers but all of a sudden they're. Yelling it's, like,
okay we're really in trouble. Now and so this wasn't
one of those moments Where mark was. Yelling even he
was just saying to the, guys, look, guys we'll be
here all day until we get. THIS i don't care
what we have. Planned AND i saw the practice plan.
Right they were handing out the practice plan to everybody
that was in, attendance by the, way with one little
(17:38):
little thing THAT i THAT i noticed. Yesterday so what
the what they're doing is if you attend, practice they're
handing out a bottle OF i, mean a manager is
IMMEDIATELY i mean to, me it just speaks to the
overall excellence in every aspect of the program That mark's
brought to the. Program so it doesn't matter who you,
(17:58):
are why you're, there if you're allowed to be, there
and you've been approved to be there watching, practice a
manager runs up to you with a bottle of water
and a piece of paper that has the, guys guys,
pictures names and numbers on. It and then on the
flip side is the practice. Plan now you can't make
(18:18):
high in her hair out of this practice. Plan you
don't know what any of these words. Mean, yes it's like, this, this,
This then you're trying to figure, Out, okay what part
are we. In, oh, oh we're doing this. Drill oh all,
RIGHT i guess that's what this drill is. Called, okay
but at the very bottom of, it and actually it's
on the reverse, side it's where the player's pictures. Are
it's also got the coaches. Listed, yeah but the very
(18:39):
bottom just and this is such a tiny, thing but
to me it was, like, yeah that's A Mark pope.
Thing it just says we appreciate.
Speaker 4 (18:45):
You.
Speaker 2 (18:45):
Wow And i'm like AND i just read that And i'm, like,
yeah that's my. BOY i, mean because it is that
that is that is A Mark pope thing where it's, like, no, no,
no the media is not the, enemy though they, are
But mark is. Not but but But mark is going
to be, like, no, look we we're glad you're. Here
and it was just such a it was, yeah, yeah,
(19:07):
no we want to make sure, you we want you.
Here but now that you're. Here we're glad you're, here
and we and we appreciate whatever it is to. Do,
no it, doesn't you. Know and and it's even to
the point where you, know and Even Coach patino understood
this like if you were if you snuck into, practice
which our practices were very, closed you, know except to you,
know similar, people ex players could. Come, Uh Jerry clangelo
(19:34):
was allowed to be, there though he was thrown out
of practice by a. MANAGER i Believe i've told you
that story, before the, greatest one of the greatest stories.
Ever Jerry clangelo is sitting in the front. Row poor
manager did not know who he, was so went right
up to him and wanted to know who he, was
why he was. There And Coach patino immediates, like he's,
fine he's, fine leave in. There BUT i, mean practice
(19:59):
was so So mark's getting on about this one. Drill it's, like,
guys we'll be here all. Day we will do this
drill until you get the, goal because we will not
fall short of our. Goals AND i mean the next
time they not only got, it they destroyed what they
GET i, mean and to, me it was almost, like all,
right this was just a matter of, focus AND i
think To mark that's what it was. Too it's, like, okay,
(20:20):
look we are four weeks into this kind of. PRACTICE
i think since school has, started maybe something like, that
and it's like you get to this point, where, man
you're doing a lot of running and it's an everyday,
thing and it's an every day two and a half hour,
thing and you just show up and it's not that
you're not intense and you're not, focused but, man you
can get into the same drill sometimes it just kind
of in your brain half. Hearted AND i think that's
(20:43):
what they were. Doing they weren't, focused and that's Why
mark had to get on a little. Bit AND i
mean that that next, time if they have to get
one hundred and. THIRTY i looked up at a. Scoreboard
it was one hundred and sixty eight points on the.
Wow so they didn't just beat, it they blew it,
away which to, me it's, like all, right that's a
lesson for everybody in, here is, That, hey every, drill we're,
focusing every, drill we know what we need to.
Speaker 1 (21:03):
Do Cameron mills in the. Garage we'll come back and
talk more about the Basketball, cats the new, guys as
well as the returning. Vets here on six, Thirty wap
And Thick gabriel offer some minor surgery taking care of
some skin. CANCER i hope you are safe and get
yourself checked. Out here's more of the best of The
Big Blue. Insider Cameron mills is here in the. Garage
(21:24):
we've got the garage door.
Speaker 2 (21:25):
OPEN i know what's. THAT i thought you opened it
because usually you just open it for me BECAUSE i
come around behind your house and walk in the. Garage
this is where we do. It but this weather a
little fresh, Air oh my.
Speaker 1 (21:36):
Gosh, plus sadly we are without a Dark star and
if we opened the garage, door she would wander. Off
so again we had to say goodbye to. Her, yeah
a couple of weeks, ago but she will never be.
Forgotten that's.
Speaker 2 (21:49):
Right, oh by the, WAY i got let me give
you an idea because you KNOW i LOST i had
to Put henry down less than a year. Ago, yeah
and did your. Vet i'm, like did you get A star's?
Call and oh, yeah. Yeah so SO i found a
thing yesterday AND i will send you the link to
it Because i'm, like what DO i do with? IT
i don't want to throw. It i'm not throwing this.
Away henry was a part of my life for thirteen.
(22:09):
YEARS i mean literally one of the greatest DOGS i ever,
had which is hard to say Because, jonah a completely
different kind of, dog is one of THE i, MEAN
i JUST i just love you AND i both love our.
Dogs and BUT i found this. Thing it's it's it's really.
Cool it's got there and it's it's a wood it's
it's kind of a wood cut. Out it's only like twenty,
bucks and it's got a place for their, name their.
(22:30):
LIFESPAN a nice little dog quote that you can come
up with. THAT i found one yesterday that SAID i
think it was, UH i don't know who, quote but
it was something something about people question whether dogs will
be in. HEAVEN i guarantee you there will be the
first ones. There and AND i just thought that was
apropos of my my thirteen year old golden tree for passing.
Away and so and then right right in like in
(22:54):
the middle is a place to wrap their collarh and
and that's what appealed to. Me and then next to
that is where you can put their. Picture and so to,
me it was, like because his collar has sat in a,
bag and every TIME i look at, IT i, START
i start weeping a little, BIT i start tearing up
a little, bit and car.
Speaker 1 (23:09):
Start went through several but my, fave of course was
The Green Bay, pass, absolutely so that would be one.
Speaker 2 (23:15):
Well AND i, assume like his tag still on, there
and the little thing we put on there say if,
lost Call mommy Or daddy or whatever it was we
put on. There and so it was one of those
things WHERE i saw that yesterday or two days, ago
AND i Showed, Susan i'm, like CAN i get this For?
Henry like is it? Okay you, know and because it's
Like i'm tired of having his stuff in a, bag
because they did this thing where they like put you,
(23:36):
know they put some ink on his on his nose
and made a little nose. Print they made a little
pawprint on a piece of, paper just just and it
was part of the, package but it was just stuff
THAT i, thought, YEAH i don't want. THAT i don't
know What i'm gonna do with, it BUT i love the.
Idea SO i have his, collar SO i thought you
might want. To i'll send you the link because it's
kind of a cool way to memorialize your pet other
than burying him in their, backyard which it's not SOMETHING
(23:59):
i apealed to.
Speaker 1 (24:00):
Me i've only done that. Once won't do.
Speaker 2 (24:02):
It, yeah back to the.
Speaker 1 (24:04):
Basketball we talked about how this is a semi new.
Roster there are returners.
Speaker 2 (24:11):
But and therefore, leaders WHICH i think is really. Good
Brandon garrison being among the the coolest stories to.
Speaker 1 (24:17):
Me and in speaking To, brandon he seems comfortable with. That,
yeah you, know, YEAH i mean he's he's a bright,
guy a big, guy and it seems like he learned
a lot From Amari williams and and ready to to. Shoulder,
yeah tell me what that's.
Speaker 2 (24:35):
Like, WELL i don't know what it that's like, PERSONALLY
i can tell you what it's like watching Brand, YEAH i, Figured,
YEAH i don't know. WHO i don't know. Who.
Speaker 1 (24:43):
Spot you were a leader your senior.
Speaker 2 (24:45):
YEAR i was a leader because, YEAH i was BECAUSE
i Was well here's the, thing BECAUSE i was a
leader Because Jeff shepherd was my. Leader and he was
my leader in ALL i mean in the sense of
he played my. Position he had in there a year
BEFORE i had gotten. There he was part of the
Same bible study That Mark pope AND i and Then
shep And walter were a part of for four years
(25:07):
while we were AT uk OR i guess two years
In mark's. Case we were all part of that little,
group BUT I shep was always the ONE i looked up,
to especially as a, freshman and kind of, like you, know,
which what'd you do when you get? There and that's
the importance of somebody Like brandon and somebody like A
mario last, year even Though mario was new to The
pope system in plaint Of. Kentucky, Well brandon's game is
(25:28):
different than A. Mari's brandon can shoot from from, distance
But brandon's a shop. Blocker brandon is an. Intimidator brandon
needs to. Be he's put on some he's put on
a little. Balk he doesn't look as skinny as he
did last. Year AND i think more so it's the
attitude of the guy Of okay when you, know even
THOUGH i, so let's say my senior, year when the
three seniors were, Myself shep And allen And tubby came
(25:53):
in and made us the try, captain right, Well alan AND,
i even THOUGH i would See allan is you, KNOW
i put myself on that third position of leadership by you,
know as. Captain, NOW i still took on the mantle
of captain and still did EVERYTHING i was supposed to,
do is to set.
Speaker 1 (26:06):
Examples, yes, yeah.
Speaker 2 (26:08):
And and there were ways THAT i did. That But
i'll always deferred To shep And. Allen more so To
shep Because shep had been, there Because alan AND i
remember came in the same year we came in ninety
four to ninety. Five shepp was a sophomore that, year
So shep had seniority over. Us he just read shirted a.
Year but to which you watch that guy AND i
AND i, look there's a. Poem and not to get
too philosophical, here BUT i Think i've shared this with you,
(26:29):
before but, this this is like a poem that used
to be in the locker room AT. Uk it used
to be in that locker Little, Eyes Little eyes Upon.
You and to me is it's one of the Rest
it's one of the most important poignant. Poems AND i
tell you all the, time AND i mean this. Sincerely
other than The, bible it's the most significant piece of
literature in my. Life and it is it's called Little
eyes Upon, you and it says there little eyes upon,
you and they're watching night and. Day little ears that
(26:50):
quickly take in every word you, say little hands all
eager to do everything you, do and little boys who
are dreaming of the day they'll be like. You, right
which in twofold number, one that's to remind every single
player that team that there are little kids out there
buying your jersey, now wanting your. Autograph why because they
dream of being in your, shoes of being in this locker.
Room so don't take that for, granted and take that
(27:12):
responsibility as when you get outside this locker, room keep
your nose, clean because these kids are watching you on
and off the basketball. Court so it's important from that.
Aspect but then it's also important just as a lesson
to understand that every one of us has somebody that's
looking up to us and wants to follow in our
footsteps to some. Degree it's like you and. ME i,
mean for twenty five years, now you have mentored me
when it comes to stuff like, this right you have
(27:35):
you have shut me down When i've had, Ideas you're, like, no, no,
no no. No you know You, well when we did our,
DOCUMENTARIES i would come up WITH I ts and you
and app would be like, no, no, no, no, no
that is. TRUE i, mean and then you would call,
me like WHEN i would do it When i'm on
the radio, show you would call me and, say, eh
that one, Segment, YEAH i don't, know you talk too
much or you know one of the many foibles guests
(27:56):
get tu tar, Right, yeah that's solid. Point but, anyway
so everybody has that, person if not multiple people who
either through a friendship or even are hidden that are
looking up to. Them AND i think if we're talking
about you know, what If brandon was, wise AND i
think the evidence is that he did do, this AND
i think a lot of guys did this last year
(28:18):
BECAUSE i think this is one of the things That
Mark pope will instill in his team and already, has
is that you're not just being coached By Mark pope
or By Mark, fox or by Coach figure or or
Coach hart or coach McHale or Coach, McLean michael. MacLean
you're being coached by your teammates because your job regardless
(28:42):
of whether you're better than somebody or. Not Like Walker, Horn,
Okay walker's been there five years something like. That he's
not the, star he's not gonna you, know he'll play
probably the same amount of minutes he played last. Year
if that, yes why, well a number, one he grew
up in a basketball. Family his dad's a head Backasketball
division one, coach And walker's a smart kid who has
(29:05):
seen a lot OF d one basketball close, up and
so it's.
Speaker 1 (29:09):
Been in a lot of.
Speaker 2 (29:10):
Huddles to Ignore walker's, wisdom you do it at your own.
Peril to say that Markl mar to say That walker
doesn't play there for What walker has to, say or
to Watch walker in practice and to dismiss the way
he practices is stupid because he may not get to
play in the games a, lot because overall talent may
(29:31):
not be as much as his. Teammates but watch how
he goes through the. Drills that's how you go through the.
DRILLS i want.
Speaker 1 (29:37):
To talk about the leadership And kentucky's veteran players on
the other side of the. Break Cameron mills in the
garage with us here on A big Moon sider six
thirty Wlap welcome back to the best of The Big.
Moonsider Dick gabrielle with you off having a little minor
surgery for some skin. Cancer hope you get yourself checked.
Out here is more of my conversation here in the
garage With Cameron. Mills we were talking about leadership and
(30:01):
veteran players prior to the break And Brandon garrison we
talked about, specifically.
Speaker 2 (30:06):
And you know, what we didn't finish. That but let
let me let me make SURE i make This, Clay
brandon has grown up a lot in last. Year, now
you remember a couple times last year when he got you,
know the little scuffles at the end of some. Games, yep.
YEP i don't, know honestly if that's something he's grown.
Past and to be, HONEST i don't know if that's
SOMETHING i want him to grow, past because BECAUSE i
look At jamal. Mcglure jamal mcglure was an absolute mental. Terror,
(30:30):
OKAY i mean he he had this rule that that
was given to him by our head coach that you
never let anyone dunk on. You And jamal took that
personally to the point where AND i think you And
i've talked about this four on the. Air, actually there
was A louisville game back in the in the early two.
THOUSANDS i guess it would have BEEN i guess we've
been two thousand and. One it was the year AFTER i,
left where louisll was beating us At Freedom hall and
(30:53):
one of their players the game was basically, over AND
i think the plot, was and they were going. Down
they were going to dunk on, us but he wouldn't have,
counted And jamal was like no and went down and
not only blocked the guy's, dunk but blocked him AND
i mean put him on his rear. End and then
a little kerfuffle breaks, out And i'm, like, what it's
what he's been told to. Do you never let gamer no,
(31:14):
game never let, no never let anybody dunk on. YOU
i kind of like, that having that kind of attitude
At brandon's little you, know his his let's say it's
let's say it's a chip on his, shoulder whatever it,
is his little, like you, know intimidation. Factor he's look
he's put ON i would, say don't know for, sure
but it looks like he's put on about twenty pounds of. Muscle,
really it looks it looks how he's not as. Skinny
(31:37):
he's not as. Skinny, yeah he's not skinny as he
was last. Year he's grown his hair out so as
you said earlier it was six to, ten about six,
eleven six twelve with the, afro it wouldn't really call
it an, afro but but he's grown his hair out
a little. Bit but, Anyway brandon is just the way he,
talks and you mentioned this. Earlier he's talking as though
(31:57):
it's his time to step into that into that, role
AND i think he's taking it really. Seriously AND i
also one Thing i'll add THAT i don't THINK i.
SHOULD i could have shared last. Year as matter of,
FACT i didn't want to share last. Year the first
practice After madness almost. Positive it's when it was they're
running right. Now the exciting thing is to, me and
this is one thing we talking about it. Yesterday one
(32:18):
thing that stood out to me is this team looks
like they are already in like mid season. Condition really
they LOOK i mean they went AND i HEARD i
THINK i Heard Jimmy dan O'Connor And Jim lamaster in
the group that they were, with they were like four
or five seats. Down one of them said the same,
thing like they look like they're in. Shape. Wow AND
i had been noticing that WITH jp because that's WHY
(32:39):
i was sitting next to And i'm, like these, GUYS i,
mean they're not sucking, wind AND i see no vomit
on the, floor which always makes me mad because that's
just where it. Belongs But i'm. Sorry, look, LOOK i
realized health, Wise i've been told that this is not
a good. Thing but as someone who if someone didn't
vomit during a preseason practice and someone was doing their,
(33:00):
job either the players or the coaches and, so and
look to the point where that story faked that, no
you can know you, exactly you. Can't oh my, Back oh, no, no, no, no no,
no because the thing is, like especially if You're Mark
pope in the middle, practice, who by the, way never
threw up in the middle of practice except one, time
and that's that is a legendary story because he didn't
want to stop to throw. Up he wanted to continue
(33:22):
practicing while he threw, up and therefore it got all
over the. Flour it's still, Though, COLLEY i miss my
guys all. Right, Anyway so, yeah these, guys and we
talked about more, later but they just did not look.
Tired But brandon specifically just looks like he's raised step
into that.
Speaker 1 (33:38):
Role, Well i've only got about five more minutes here
in this, segment but we talked in the Break Danny
manning was a great college player and he Led kansas
to the upset Of oklahoma in THE ncaa championship. GAME
i think it was nineteen eighty, eight and his coach
Was Larry, brown and he And Larry brown argued over
the fact That manning did not want to be a.
(34:00):
Leader we were, talking we've been talking about, leadership AND
i was thinking About otega Ol. Way it was likely
going to be the best player on this, team could,
be As pope, said the PRESEASON sec, player the or
POSTSEASON sec player of the. Year it's not exactly, right
but all that does is indicate what's expected of him by,
fans by, media by his.
Speaker 2 (34:21):
Own, coach which is what.
Speaker 1 (34:23):
Matters, yeah that's what. Matters but do you subscribe to that,
because as you, Said Jeff shepherd was the leader of
your ninety eight. Team, uh you had a lot of,
LEADERS i think on the ninety six team because you
had a lot of the. Best who was the best
player in the ninety six. Team it's hard to.
Speaker 2 (34:40):
Say Probably, Tony, yeah who was a?
Speaker 1 (34:43):
Leader what do you what do you think of? That but.
Speaker 2 (34:46):
Notion but but, yes he was not the main. LEADER
i Mean Tony tony was a. LEADER i Mean tony
was definitely someone you you you.
Speaker 1 (34:55):
All looked up to.
Speaker 2 (34:56):
Him, well, yeah of, course because he'd be not out
of me. Ea AND i don't mean LIKE i mean
trying to guard. HIM i mean he was, nothing but
he's one big muscle and his arms ARE i mean
they reached down to his. FEET i mean he's just he's.
Long he's he's not, long but he's. What he was
six to, two but wings wings fan was ridiculous and
then those those wings were literally nothing but. Muscles so
(35:17):
you try to guard him or he's guarding you and
literally he can hold you off from getting around him
just with his outstretched. Arm, so But tony was definitely
a leader Because tony was the one That, okay if
coach is, Mad tony's, mad, Right So tony would get on.
Speaker 1 (35:33):
Us do you see otaga awaylaying that kind of role
for this.
Speaker 2 (35:38):
TEAM i will say, this he has to for us
to be. GOOD i think that's What Larry.
Speaker 1 (35:45):
Brown was trying to impart To Danny. Manning if we're
going to be, successful the best player has to be a.
Speaker 2 (35:52):
Leader, well here's what the best player cannot. Be AND
i AND i guess by, default if he cannot be,
this then he must be the. Other he cannot be a, follower,
right the best player on the team cannot be a.
Follower he has to be the leader or a. Leader
AND i, think in IF i go to the ninety
Sixteen Tony delk was not a, follower but he wasn't the.
(36:12):
Leader the leader was name, no well, no he yeah he,
was but he. Wasn't, yeah, sure but he wasn't The.
No you had plenty the, no but there was one
that was the, leader and his name Was Anthony. Epps
he was the. Leader he was the one that you
do every everyone deferred, to Including, tony from time TO i, mean,
(36:36):
look it's one of those things where if there's there's
this great picture FROM i want to say it's the
ninety five season ninety, six which It's WALT t D
mark And anthony maybe one of the, player but for
them walking out from a timeout with coach p his
arms around all four of them and he's coaching him
as they're walking out from a. Timeout and AS i
look at that, picture just visually in my, Head i'm,
looking that's the ninety six championship team right, there that's
(36:58):
The those are the leaders of, That AND i say
so it Was. Mark mark was a. LEADER i mean,
YOU i, mean, look you can't look At mark now
and think that he was any different. College as a
matter of, fact watching him coach, YESTERDAY i kept leaning
over to the guy From nike and, thinking, this, knucklehead
this is exactly who he was when he. PLAYED i,
mean this is exactly who he was when he. Played
BUT i think it's important that your best player cannot
(37:18):
be a. Follower he cannot defer to anybody. Else he
does not have to be the, leader BECAUSE i think
in the ninety SIX i would even say the ninety eight,
Team shep was a, Leader allen was a. LEADER i.
THINK i think what's important is that your upper, statesman
whether they be sophomores or, seniors they have got to be. Leaders, yeah,
right your best. Player what if your best player comes
(37:40):
in as a. Freshman we've had that happen in THE uk. Before,
true can he possibly be a? LEADER i mean he,
can he can evolve into one by the end of the,
season but the beginning of the, season this is all
new to.
Speaker 1 (37:50):
Him but it's not often that that the freshman has
been the. Guy the team revolves around At kentucky.
Speaker 2 (37:59):
During the cow.
Speaker 1 (38:00):
Years one freshman.
Speaker 2 (38:04):
But, freshmen, Right, Yeah but What i'm saying is is
that in the, LEADER i think one of them probably.
Became but What i'm saying, is by the end of the, SEASON.
Speaker 1 (38:15):
I Guess Patrick patterson was probably the.
Speaker 2 (38:16):
Leader, YEAH i would, SAY i would think. So but
by the end of the season becomes. One you. KNOW
I i've told the story before. Too walking up the
steps after one of the harder PRACTICES i HAD i
had incurred my freshman, year not knowing how much worse
they could get and needing some, assurance And Mark pope
is walking in front of, me and SO i yell
(38:37):
At mark and we're walking up to the lodge AND i, say, Hey,
POPE i, said he just sounds so weakly saying this a.
Moment how bad was that compared to how bad they can?
Get and he was, like that's bad as bad as
they can. Get AND i needed. THAT i needed to
know that THAT i had made it through one of
the harder.
Speaker 1 (38:51):
Practices probably makes your stomach grumble and growl right.
Speaker 2 (38:54):
Now it makes you think it's over and.
Speaker 1 (38:58):
We'll have more With cameron is after the break here
on The best of The big bull In sider six
thirty Wor Late Food it's Stick, Abriel welcome back to
(40:37):
The best of The Big Blue. INSIDER i am out
today having surgery for a little bit of skin. Cancer
they caught it. EARLY i was. Fortunate, please if you haven't,
already get yourself checked out and enjoy the best of
The Big moon site of the rest of my conversation
with FORMER uk Guard Cameron. MILLS i don't, know it's
just coming at us like a freight.
Speaker 2 (40:57):
Train but which let's be. HONEST i mean now you've
started football, right started it, well you know WHAT i?
Mean football season has, started If i'm not, mistaken, Right
so so your your, role your role other than the,
show right when it comes to media or doing things
that you've done for what almost fifty years, now your
role it. Started mine's just getting ready to. Start so
(41:18):
the seven months where we're not in, Season i'm twittling my.
THUMBS i don't know what to do. Anymore it's like
it's like it's like and it used to it and
a lot of it has to do With mark being,
here but used to it's, like you, KNOW i just
need basketball to roll. Around AND i was never like.
That wasn't that you know, THIS i was never like.
IT i didn't. KNOW i didn't know we were playing
half the nights we were. Playing and now now That mark's,
(41:41):
here And i've got like this personal interest In, mark you,
know you, know just so desperately wanting him to succeed
at the highest level, here which we all know what that.
Means it's, just, MAN i just can't, wait you know
the other. Thing AND i was reminded of this yesterday at,
practice just because it'd been so Since i've been Around
mark until last year when he got. Here he is
(42:03):
one of the Most AND i know people are gonna
get tired of me saying, this BUT i think everybody
understands this now this, year he's just he just he
motivates the heck out of. You you didn't have to
be talking to, you and you're, like, man it's like
it's like that poem. Again you will sit there and
you watch how he treats, Someone you watch how he
talks to his, team you watch the things he says
(42:24):
to his, team and you're Like, yeah he's, right AND
i need to apply that more to my. Life it's
just how he is and that's how he was as a.
Teammate so that's WHY i say ninety, Sixteen, Yeah anthony
was the leader on the court, especially But tony was a.
Leader mark was a, LEADER i, mean AND i think
that's when you have a great, team is when you've
got everybody's willing to step up at different times and
be a. Leader on the ninety eight, team, Yeah shep
(42:45):
was our team, captain of our try captainhood of. Me
shep And Alan, edwards, right and so Maybe alan AND
i were the secondary. Captains But Wayne, Turner oh, Yeah
Wayne turner was A i mean he. Was he was a,
Leader wayne D Wayne turner by the time he was
A i guess We're gonnayemore junior freshman. Year he comes.
In he's quite his. MOUSE i won't say a word to
anybody during a. Game so how can you be a
(43:06):
leader if you're not willing to yell at your, teammates
because that's what you. NEED i, MEAN i remember When
Travis ford yelled At Rodney, Moon Rodney, Moon Rodney, Moon,
Dent Rodney dent in the middle of a, game that
is a three foot Advantage rodney has Over Travis. Ford
and Because rodney messed up on a fast, Break travis
grabbed his little, pel pulled him down to his face
and screamed in his. Face and you know What rodney,
(43:28):
did took it like a man and walked away and, said, yes,
sir because that's my. Leader and so when you have
guys on your team that are willing to step up
to that role regardless of you, know and that's Who
wayne was by the TIME i was a, Senior SO
i Guess wayne would have been a, junior maybe a.
SOPHOMORE i think he was a junior by the TIME
i got. There wayne is willing to yell at. Me
and but what makes it great is What wayne understood
(43:50):
about our relationship, Is, okay If wayne once assists And cameron's,
OPEN i need to Get cameron the ball. Now If,
cameron If, wayne If wayne needs to drive and score
as he did in That dukee, game he'll do. It
but he also said he was.
Speaker 1 (44:05):
Going to do it in the.
Speaker 2 (44:06):
Huddle oh, yeah oh, yeah yeah. Yeah he, said, guys
this this guy talking About Wocha. Howski he just just
give me the. BALL i got this and he got.
It But wayne understood, that you know, WHAT i need
to do. That but in order to get me to
places WHERE i would get open, shots and Therefore wayne
would get Assist And i'm not saying he did a
selfish reason she should get, assists but it was all, about,
oh we need. Points, well, Shoot, cameron why are you
(44:27):
doing this when you should be doing? That AND i
can get you the? Ball and he would yell at,
me And i'm, like, dude you wouldn't say two words
to anybody your freshman.
Speaker 1 (44:35):
Year, well from what you've, seen then we've talked about.
Leadership the one guy we need to talk about Is Jalen,
lowe the new point guard who came in From pittsburgh
and all but carried that. Team, yeah and now he's,
surrounded of course by more. Talent have you been able
to learn much about him as far as being the point,
guard the, leader what he brings to this.
Speaker 2 (44:55):
Too he hasn't stood out as a leader to me.
Yet and and please don't misinterpret that saying, that, yeah because,
Look i'm still to the point WHERE i at that
sheet they gave us with names and numbers other than
the guys that were here last. Year i'm still having
to put names with. Faces, Sure and you, know AND
i AND i messed up a couple. TIMES i Got
jasper confused with with With. JALEN i Got jalen confused
(45:15):
with WITH i want to See Denzel? Aberdeen is It? Denzel? Yeah, yeah,
okay all, right so you, know and the first of,
all these guys don't look. Alike And i'm still, like all,
RIGHT i, know we've got some guards and they're, new
and so here are some short guys relatively that are.
New so who's, who? Right AND i, MEAN i, mean
(45:37):
that's WHERE i. AM i, MEAN i you Say i've
been going, to like this is the third Practice i've
gone to. Yesterday and but AS i said, earlier not
only was it, intense AND i mean these. Guys what's
cool to me is, That, okay we've got five guys
left over from last. Year. Approximately we've Got Zach toe
by the, Way zach's still. There don't know what role he's.
(46:00):
PLAYING i don't know if he's, still if.
Speaker 1 (46:01):
He's on, walk.
Speaker 2 (46:03):
If he's, yeah so he's ON i, mean so he's.
There so six guys that were there last. Year look
don't discount As zach toe because the thing THAT i
remember them saying About zach last year Is zach did
everything that was asked of. Him and when you're a walk,
on that is the minimum you better be. Doing And
zach did. It And zach got a lot of kudos
from a lot of, people not publicly necessarily though he may,
(46:23):
have for doing the, right for doing the things he
needed to, do doing what was asked of. Him AND
i Think walker is the same. WAY i Think walker
got that has that. Attitude but when the other, guy
the new guys that have come, IN i, Mean i'm
still like watching these guys and seeing who stands. Out
AND i also say this the way practice. Works right
(46:47):
when you've got, okay you're in practice and at this
point you're fighting for playing. Time right, there there's not
a lot of good looking. Offense and good LOOKING i
mean especially because you and tell, LIKE i don't, KNOW i,
mean this looks. Sloppy it always looks sloppy this time of,
year because especially when the coach is emphasizing, defense because
(47:11):
defense doesn't making offense look. Terrible, now what makes it
good about that is that offense has to work extra
hard to get into the flow of their, offense to
get their offense run in to GET i, mean to
make offense look good against good. Defense, well that's what
we ultimately. Want and right, NOW i mean yesterday man
defense just looked. MADDENING i mean. MADDENING i mean. NOBODY
(47:33):
i mean there was not a single pass from point
to wing that was not almost deflected or. DEFLECTED i
mean we couldn't even initiate our. Offense sometimes now we
Bust we broke through that, eventually right where we started doing.
Things you, know all, right, dude you got to go
set your man. Up you got to go, deep put
your shoulder or your your shoulder into his, chest and
(47:54):
then put your legs or your your left leg in
between his legs and then just bust. Out we weren't doing,
that and even if we, were we've got some athletes
that can overcome. That so it just made practice. THIS i,
mean it didn't matter what was going. On you had
a way over, here like when he wasn't in in
he's over here on the bike conditioning you, had you
(48:17):
HAD i don't know what happened TO i think it,
was uh was? It, Shoot i'm gonna forget his, name, tall,
tall lanky. GUY i know that's who they are to
me right, now AND i feel terrible about, that BUT
i trust me folks about the time season rolls, AROUND
i don't know who these guys. Are but at some,
point AND i don't know. WHAT i don't know what
the guy had. Done he was one of our new.
(48:37):
GUYS i don't know what he'd. Done but all of a,
sudden he's now down on the floor pushing a towel
on all fours, Right, yeah so he's pushing pushing. It,
yeah so he did something meaning like he didn't, like you, know. Properly,
Yeah and that's always what it. Is AND i don't
want to make that. Clear, say it's not cussing out the.
Coaches nobody's doing. That it's that, dude you're you were
told you hit the, line if we're if we're if
(49:00):
we're running, seventeen's you hit the. Line nobody, cheats and
if you, cheat we're all doing it. Again and that's
not what he. Did but it's kind of small thing
you cannot. Do and all of a, sudden it's an
assistant coach, says grab a, towel and all of a,
sudden you're down on all fours pushing that towel across.
Speaker 1 (49:17):
The floor land or at least you.
Speaker 2 (49:20):
Will, no you'll do it. Again but, Boy i'm telling you, What,
yeah the next time you do, it you're in a
no the moment you didn't do. It you don't even
need a coach to say grab a. Twel you just
go grab a towel because you know what's coming Is Cameron.
Speaker 1 (49:32):
Mills we'll come back and wrap up this special edition
Of The Big Boo, insider at Least cameron's part of.
It on the other side of the break here on
six THIRTY Wlap welcome, back it's the best of The
Big Boo, Insider Dick abriel with you actually out today
having some surgery to remove some skin. Cancer get yourself checked.
Out please do that for. Me and here's the rest
of my conversation With Cameron. Mills cameron has been to
(49:55):
three practices so, far likes what he, sees and you
like the competitive nature of this, team of the one
drill in. Particular you were.
Speaker 2 (50:04):
Telling, Me, yeah so they did this thing that we
used to do all the, time except they did it
a little differently called it basically time and score is
what we called, it and basically it was where it's
in our, case it was end of game situations where,
okay you've got the blue, team the white. Team white
team's down three with the, ball there's a minute fifteen.
Speaker 3 (50:20):
Left.
Speaker 2 (50:21):
Right what they did yesterday is they had two rotations
of six minute. Games so you had the blue team
and the white. Team and by the, way to be,
clear the blue team and the white, team to my
knowledge looking out there on the, court they've not been.
Divided WHEN i, played the blue team was that was the.
Starters white team was the. Subs and that's the way
it always. Was so if you were on the blue,
team even if you substituted on the blue, team didn't
(50:42):
mean you were a starter all of a. Sudden but
the blue these were the. STARTERS i don't Think marcus
divided his team up. YET i don't think blue represents,
Starters white represents the. SUBS i don't think he's there,
yet but there are there is A, yesterday there was
a blue team and there was a white. Team and
so what he did is he took he put six
minutes on the, clock gave the blue team a, bench a,
coach and some. Timeouts The white, team a, bench a,
(51:04):
coach and some, timeouts and then we did to basically
two parts of this where all, right this first six,
minutes the scores eighty six eighty three and blue teams
up eighty six eighty, three six minutes, left let's, play
and let's see how we handle the last six minutes
of a game with a three point lead or a
three point. Deficit the first the first, round the white,
(51:28):
TEAM i don't think the blue, TEAM i don't think
they scored a. Point i'm not. KIDDING i THINK i
think The white team just dominated. Them AND i literally
THINK i think they reached one. HUNDRED i THINK i
think by the end that six minutes it was one
hundred and eighty. Six now you look at, that it
just by me telling you, that and you're, like, oh
that's not a good. Sign oh it's such a good,
sign because what it means is is that, regardless The
(51:51):
blue team wasn't ready and The white team was. Right
so then we wash out, coach you, know with the
coaches are, like you, know Coach fox and coach coach,
MacLean they're over, here and then you've got a coach
heart and over here you've got Coach figure and coach
Coach brooks over here coaching The white team. Whatever so
(52:13):
they've got coaches and they've got. Timeouts So mark then
goes over to each bench kind of gives his two. Cents,
right obviously probably had some more works for The blue
team than he did The white. Team we come back,
out we're gonna do the same, thing except we're gonna
reverse it. Now Now blue teams got eighty three, Points
white team's got eighty six. Points we're gonna play another six.
Minutes same, thing almost exact opposite. Happened it's like it's,
(52:34):
like all of a, sudden The blue team had been
sprung awake by their absolute crushing and The white team
couldn't do anything with. Them and to, me it was
again it goes back to what we were talking about.
Earlier of so much of what happens right now at
this point of the season is, mental where it's, About,
okay the basic drill we have done every day for
(52:54):
two years, now or a year and a half Since
Mark pope has been, here which is the two minute,
drill which is where three threes in layups you've got
to get one hundred and thirty points on that, scoreboard
and the first two times you didn't come, close we
will sit here all day until you. Do so this
isn't a matter of you all not being able to
make threes or be able to hustle and get that
extra two or three layups. In it's a matter of
(53:15):
you don't want. To so we're gonna do it all
day AND i. Will AND i don't know that you did,
this But i'm, LIKE i will tear up this practice
plan and we will sit here and do this until
you all hit the, goal because we are At kentucky
and we do not miss our. Goal and the next
the very next time they came out two minutes they
hit one hundred and sixty eight points or. Something it's.
Ridiculous so it's so much mental and then you get
(53:36):
to this point where it's, like all, right six minute,
games you're down? Three what do you? Do how do
you handle this last six minutes of the, Game because
let's face, it those are the most important six minutes
of every, game so how are you going to handle? That,
well the first time, Out blue wasn't. Ready white just destroyed.
Them second time, Out blue, responded and it's like those
little micro lessons Of, hey it may be practice and
(53:59):
we may be a month away from our first real,
game but we've got to now start understanding that every
second of every practice is going to lead to what
kind of team we're going to be every second of every.
Game and the cool thing is watching the coaching, staff
not Just, mark but the coaching. Staff and that's WHY
(54:20):
i say yesterday's practice was so. Intense it's like there
is at this, point they've had so many. Practices they
are in the, group the, guys the players know what's,
expected and there's not a lot of. Yelling there's not
a lot of motivation when it comes to you, know you,
know like where coach p would motivate, us motivate us
out of, fear there's not a lot of that because number,
ONE i don't think that's how these coaches. ARE i
(54:41):
know that's not How mark. Is he motivates out of.
Expectation it's that, Look i'm not gonna. Yell it's it's that,
old that Legendary Tony dungee. Story the very first time
he met with His colts team and he told, them
as an entire, team this is the loudest you will
hear me all. Year because it's, simple, gentlemen we're. Professionals
(55:02):
IF i have to raise my, voice then you're failing
AND i will. NOT i will not deal with. Failures
so either you do what's asked.
Speaker 3 (55:12):
The.
Speaker 2 (55:12):
Team that's, Right SO i will not have.
Speaker 1 (55:13):
To Which pope can.
Speaker 2 (55:14):
DO i will not have to raise my. Voice oh he,
can you can park on the.
Speaker 1 (55:18):
Bench can't cut them.
Speaker 2 (55:20):
Well but the same thing With. Dungee dungee can say to, Them,
okay you might Be Peyton, manning but if you don't
do What i'm, asked, which of Course peyton was never a.
Problem but why Was peyton ever a? Problem because he
was putting in more work than. ANYBODY i mean he
he was a psychopath when it came to his work.
Ethic he was watching more film than the coaches.
Speaker 1 (55:37):
Work Only i've only got a couple of minutes LEFT i.
Do this is kind of a loaded question and it's
probably way too, Early but have you seen a difference
In Mark pope as a coach compared to a last.
Year you went to a lot of, practices all the.
Games what have you?
Speaker 2 (55:52):
SEEN i Think mark is much More and this is
going to sound Like i'm saying the complete, opposite complete
out of. HERE i think he is more relaxed and more.
Intense that makes, IT i, KNOW i, KNOW i, know
it makes no. SENSE i think last Year mark was
having to feel out, everything everything he didn't. Know, look
(56:15):
it's one thing to be here as a. Player it's
one thing to be here as the head. Coach where
you are getting whether you're reading him or, not you're
receiving angry letters and angry emails and angry phone calls
to the. Staff right you're getting questions from the media
that at this point everybody's feeling him out as. Well
and obviously last, year you, know AND i think part
(56:37):
of the point is When mark was asked in the last,
year how would you grade the? Season you, see we
failed and we. Did and that's again Quintessential Mark, pope
because we have one. Goal we don't have and this
is how we were in the. Nineties we didn't have
a goal of winning THE Sec, championship THE sec tournament
(56:58):
of going you, know such as you, know going thirty
and three we. Had we didn't have a session where
we sat down and wrote down our team goals or
decided or voter on team. Goals understood, well, yeah we
knew what our goal was because We're kentucky and our
goal is, banner a, banner not, banners a banner meaning
not A final four, banner not a runner up. Banner
so in ninety, seven as great as that season, WAS
(57:21):
i Think Anthony EPs would even tell you, this and
that was his senior. Season that's why there were tears
that you, know when when we lost up In, indianapolis
that was a failure of a. Season we have a
banner representing that season hanging In. Reparena that was a
failure of a. Season because We're kentucky and we do
not suffer anything other amazing.
Speaker 1 (57:38):
Championship all the years OF ncaa, basketball there've only been.
Speaker 2 (57:42):
Eight that's one every fifteen and a.
Speaker 1 (57:44):
Half Eight kentucky.
Speaker 5 (57:45):
Championships and yet that's the expectation and it should be
and that and that is To mark's point real, quick
that is WHY i Say marcus now figured a lot
of things, out what he needs to, do what he
doesn't need to, do trying to make everybody, happy you,
know as a new, coach trying to prove that he belongs,
here WHICH i don't know there was a conscious thing
with him BUT i think maybe it.
Speaker 2 (58:04):
Was but he's over that.
Speaker 1 (58:07):
Now.
Speaker 2 (58:07):
Good now the pressure is we we got to get it.
Done but at the same time more relaxed because he's
got a better feeling of how things work.
Speaker 1 (58:15):
BEFORE i let you. Go AND i do appreciate you
coming over as always but shamelessly plugs your wife's get
another book? Out is that? Right?
Speaker 2 (58:21):
Yes this one named after, You this One i'm not happy.
About didn't get my permission before she wrote an, autobiography
wrote a. Biography, yeah So Susan's susan has released her seventh.
Book it's On. Amazon it's Called I'm Gonna Get It
Wrong Cameron The, confident WHICH i take THAT i take
great offense to. THAT i might be, confident BUT i
think some people can see that it's arrogance be. Confident
(58:44):
and what's the other word? Curious? Curious would't me? Me she
always goes for the. Literation but, anyway all of her
books are about dinosaurs with special. Needs and she's got this.
Thing it's it's The mirror in The, Window Alex. Alex
alex is on the Autism victrum and so un And
Love Love Loves dinosaurs and that's where this group From
(59:05):
she wrote him two stories just for him about dinosaurs
that had the symptoms of someone on, autism to try
to Teach alex about you, know this is this is.
You but she never said, that AND i think that was,
Important and THAT'S i think that's what's important about her
books is her books never mentioned the. Diagnosis they mentioned the.
(59:25):
Symptoms and so the point is is that it's a
mirror in a window WHERE i not in the case
of this, book BUT i am supposed to read the
story and, say, OH i know someone like. This, Yeah,
oh that's why they do, that even THOUGH i may
not know the diagnosis name if you have, that let's say,
disability just for lack of a better word THAT i
can't think of right, now you're supposed to look at
(59:47):
that and see. Yourself OH i do. That that's me
and so and. So and she's written she's got a
book about food, allergies she's got a book about since.
Reprocessing you's got a book about. Autism the new one
is ABOUT. Adhd so what better example in her life
OF adhd then to name a dinosaur a carnosaurus or
a contosaurus or whatever it's. Called it's a real. Dinosaur, camera,
(01:00:09):
camera the confident and something rather. Concisseurs WHO i mean
on the cover is this dinosaur with the. Basketball so
it's about. Me it's dedicated to, me AND i. LISTEN
i took great time and effort to edit this. Book oh,
well BECAUSE i MEAN i didn't like the LIGHT i
was being portrayed in very. Much, No i'm, kidding but, Anyway,
(01:00:29):
yeah her new book is, out actually came out yesterday
officially On, amazon where you can get all seven of her.
Books she's even got a coloring. Book AND i will
Also i'd be mistaken IF i didn't tell everybody, this
BECAUSE i know anybody can write a, book, Right but
folks check these books. Out they're Called they're in The
Rainbow Sparrow Dinosaur out book series On. Amazon look Up
Susan mills On amazon, books and know that one of her.
(01:00:53):
Book all of her books are. GREAT i think all of.
THEM i think what she's building is something. Incredible but
one of her Books alex The, artsy AND i always
forget the second this second, Adjective alisaurus Has, anxiety WHICH
i love that book because every school she goes, into
(01:01:13):
that's every single, kid every single kid has some love,
anxiety and it basically teaches this dinosaur how to use
his clause he's an, alisaurus how to rip up shreads
of paper and turn them into a claws of. Art
but the point is THAT i love is that that
book has won four National Children's Book.
Speaker 1 (01:01:30):
Awards that's. Incredible.
Speaker 2 (01:01:32):
Four, wow she's got four medals and and and to, me,
Like i'm like when she has her days where she's,
LIKE i just don't know if this is going Where i'm, like,
babe CAN i let me go grab a? Book, yeah
let me let. Me let me show. You four different
children's book institutions gave you cold medals because of what
you came up with with Alex.
Speaker 1 (01:01:50):
So four medals for her two national. Championships for, you
you better get.
Speaker 2 (01:01:53):
Busy she's a concert. PIANIST i can't beat.
Speaker 1 (01:01:55):
HER i.
Speaker 2 (01:01:56):
Can't that's that's not that's not false. Humility this woman
is amazing AND i. Can't i'm just LIKE i said
in my, biography literally written by. BIOGRAPHY i don't know
why she. Said, Yes, well we.
Speaker 1 (01:02:06):
Are glad she, did and we're glad to have. You
thanks for coming, Over see you next.
Speaker 2 (01:02:10):
Time love, you, man appreciate you more.
Speaker 1 (01:02:12):
Of the best of The Big Moon. Sider next here
on six THIRTY wlap it is the best of The
Big Moon. Sider Dick gabriel with. You i'm met the
dermatologist having a little surgery to remove some skin cancer
which they found during a routine. Checkup so please do
WHAT i. Did get yourself checked out and you might
not see. It you may not know it's, there but
(01:02:33):
the experts can find. It take care of yourself and
get yourself checked. Out now more of the best of
The Big Blue insider joinings now is a long time
friend at a former. Colleague we worked in radio to
get her many many moons, ago and NOW i can
say he's a legend Because Alan, stein who not single
handedly but played a huge role in bringing the legends
(01:02:55):
To lexing and has been honored On Founder's. Day in,
fact the mayor recently Claimed Day Alan, steinday highlighting his
lasting year backt on the city the. Community, buddy you
AND i have talked many times about bringing baseball to
election and and how much you have just enjoyed watching the.
Games but this kind of, THING i, mean there were you,
(01:03:17):
know people lined up for your. Autograph that had to
be a real.
Speaker 3 (01:03:20):
Kick, yeah it really. Was Jay by the first THING
i always, say because it's absolutely one hundred, percent unequivocally
true THAT i didn't do all this stuff by, myself,
right you, KNOW i had a lot of, supporters people
who were cheering me. ON i had twenty two original
(01:03:44):
investors in my. Group when we ultimately got the project
up and. Running we had great employees who really kind
of bought into the dream with me and gave up
parts of their lives too to be a part of
(01:04:04):
what we were able to. Accomplish and now in retrospect
twenty five years, later it seems almost surreal that we
were successful and it has continued to be, successful you,
know in, retrospect you, Know i've done a lot of
(01:04:26):
history over the years and research talking about professional sports
in Central, kentucky going all the way back to the
early nineteen hundreds and all of The CLASS d teams
that we had and the elements of the different teams
(01:04:48):
and all the way. Through you, know now one hundred
and twenty five years, later we've had professional sports here
for a long, time whether it be minor league baseball or,
football or arena, footballer hockey and now, packer all of those,
things and yet the one thing that is constant throughout
(01:05:11):
all of that is that they never. Lasted they you,
know they were two years, here three, years five, years
and The legends have been, around going strong for twenty five.
Years and we're just kind of hitting our stride now
(01:05:33):
with projects and real estate projects around the, ballparks building
a village and all of the things that are on
the drawing board for. Us this is gonna wig outlive,
me and that part of the legacy is really kind
of fun for.
Speaker 1 (01:05:50):
ME i was fearful when The legends were one of
many minor league teams that were shortsightedly drop from affiliated.
Baseball hated that for every time, because as you, KNOW
i did minor league games ON tv for a couple of.
Summers and yet, again like you, say still kicking, right.
Speaker 3 (01:06:11):
Yeah you know WE i retired after the two thousand
and eleventh season and helped a little bit in transition
in twenty and, twelve and of, course you, KNOW i
had interest in other ball plates around the, country AND
i stayed involved with those for another four or five.
(01:06:32):
YEARS i THINK i finally sold my last interest in
Our TRIPLE a club In omaha in twenty sixteen or seventeen,
SEVENTEEN i guess SO i was tangentially in adjacent to
what was going. On but the philosophy of the folks
to who we sold the club was a little bit
different than the philosophy that we, had being fan centric
(01:06:56):
and doing whatever it took to entertain our fans and
then worry about the baseball after. That and the folks
who succeeded us looked at it, differently and for better or,
worse they fell on some harder, times and you, know
they were about to close, shop and a gentleman In
(01:07:21):
nashville came, up a good, guy really good, guy Former
ole miss baseball, Players, uttles A Major league baseball, player
and he wanted to get into the. Game and, uh
he was just under capitalized and didn't have any working
knowledge of how not only baseball. Works and by that,
point you're, right Major League baseball had contracted and Unfortunately
(01:07:45):
lexington for a myriad of, reasons none the least of
which were just. Political it didn't really have anything to
do with the baseball or the stadium or the you,
know the fan support or anything like. That there were
just some you, know you've been around the game long,
enough you recognize there that professional, baseball particularly as a
(01:08:08):
good old boy kind of, network and the guys that
were ben owned and operated the club just kind of
fell on the wrong side of the good old, boys
and so they lost their. Affiliation the guy comes in From,
nashville he tries to save, it and he was underwater
from the very. Beginning SO i recognized along with some
(01:08:30):
other folks who were interested in buying the team and
bringing it back to its former. Glory we were able
to work. TOGETHER i put together a local investors group
and we own, us you, know a significant but smaller
portion of ownership of the of The Lectington. Legends we
(01:08:50):
changed the name back from The faithful Counter. Clock and
now we're near the end of our second year in
this reincarnation and it's going, great And i'm really proud
and happy about. That And we've got a lot of
things as we grow that we want to. Do you,
(01:09:11):
know it's been a bit of a roller, coaster but
we've always been. There it's twenty five, years. Wow and you,
know we we dumped another five million bucks into the
end of the stadium when we bought it back a
couple of years, ago and it's you, know close to
like news and so that stadium was well built in
(01:09:34):
the beginning and it's gonna be there for a long. Time.
Speaker 1 (01:09:37):
Yeah that that was one of the Things. Allen when
it first, OPENED i was so happy and, impressed and you,
know especially with the. Stadium but as the years went
on AND i, know bills pile up and things like,
that you were out of. It at that. Point it
just got kind of seedy and run. Down the field
of the actual playing surface wasn't much AND i you,
(01:10:01):
KNOW i think it just kind of spilled. Over but
now it's back to being a first class, operation you.
Know AND i know you've got a lot of people around.
You you're you're kind of the face of the franchise
for better or. Worse but, yeah no, kidd but now
you've Got Alan stein way out in front of the.
Ballpark and, yeah but, MAN i just remember when that plays.
(01:10:24):
OPEN i remember When Roger clemens pitched. There. Uh there
have been a lot of great memories, that haven't.
Speaker 3 (01:10:29):
There they sure. Have next. Year next year is the
twentieth anniversary Of Glenn roger came out of, retirement no,
kidding and did his first rehabit time in, here AND
i think and there was A Herald. Leader you, know
you've been doing all these really great retrospectives on basketball
(01:10:49):
and now this has been football week and making these great. Lifts,
well The Harald leader in two thousand and, something fourteen,
THIRTEEN i can't remember what it, was lifted the twenty
five AND i can't remember who did, it but listed
the top twenty five sporting events in the history Of. Lexington,
(01:11:11):
yeah and you know we've got a lot of that
great national championships in. Basketballing, yeah and university does so
many great, things and we've had great football teams and
track stars and you know we we and then you
throw in the equine sure part of. It for The
legends were number five on the.
Speaker 1 (01:11:32):
List nice On.
Speaker 3 (01:11:34):
June, sixth two thousand and, six When Roger clemens came to.
Town i've always been kind of proud of that we
have a tired little niche even in all of this wonderful,
sports you, know opportunities that happen here In.
Speaker 1 (01:11:49):
Lessington so that, night that night That clements pitched and of,
course you, know you have a nice but a modest press,
box and there were so many media people there and
we were all the LOCAL tv stations feeding the respective
networks because that was a big story, obviously so.
Speaker 3 (01:12:06):
We gave that two hundred two hundred press. Credentials wow that.
Speaker 1 (01:12:11):
NIGHT i believe.
Speaker 3 (01:12:12):
IT i believe.
Speaker 1 (01:12:13):
It and so you had us. Standing we were standing
in that, concourse so we weren't blocking other, people but you,
know we basically had to stand behind home. Plate and
a buddy of mine is a baseball fan IN la
In Los, angeles was watching On Fox west and, YEAH
(01:12:33):
