Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Big Boon Sider. Dick Gabrielle with you
on a Tuesday edition of our program, and this will
be our final show going into the Thanksgiving holiday, because
tomorrow night we got double barrel basketball action. You've got
Kentucky and Maryland down in Puerto Rico. That's the women's game,
and you can hear that one on ninety eight point
five FM, our sister station. And of course the men

(00:21):
are playing Tennessee Tech tomorrow night seven o'clock. Pregame begins
at five point thirty. By the way, the women's game
is at seven thirty. It's a pregame at seven fifteen.
Pregame for the UK men five point thirty as the
Cats take on Tennessee Tech and coach John Pelfrey. And
we'll hear from John in just a minute. He was
a guest on the Mark Pope Show last night. Then

(00:42):
on Thursday, it'll be the best of the Big Boon Sider.
Friday will be with you for an abbreviated show. More
women's basketball Friday night. But then Saturday it's Uku of
L football, the rivalry game and a bowl game on
the line. Who would have thought that a month ago
nobody would have given Kentucky much of a shot at
a bowl game, but following the loss to Vanderbilt, the

(01:03):
Cats now can win their way to a bowl game
with one more victory over a U of L team
depleted by injury. We're going to talk about that more
later in the week. So is Kentucky. But one of
the highlights coming out, well, it depends on how you
feel about him. But coming out of the news conference yesterday,
I asked Mark Pope about the fact that as a player,

(01:25):
as a coach, as an assistant coach, he's been a
part of several rivalry games. He played at Iowa, so
he had Iowa Nebraska, Iowa, Iowa State. He coached at
Florida State, so he had Florida State Florida or Florida
State Miami, and of course here at Kentucky he has
had success against those Louisville Cardinals. But I asked him
where does this one, where does ukuol fit in among

(01:49):
the rivalry games that he has taken part in through
the years, And he talked about what it meant to
him to be a part of it and to be here.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
It's important, you know, it's important. That's where I've lived
for a long time, you know, as I mentioned, whether
whether you like it or not, I'm in Kentuckian now, right.
I mean I've been here as long as anywhere I've been,
you know. I mean I left home at seventeen, haven't
been back. So I mean this is home and care
and so you know, it's a it's you know, a

(02:19):
rivalry that it's important to both teams and supporting of
the state and supportant to your fans. So it'll be
important to our team.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
Yes, bragging rights are on the line. They always are.
But you know what else is out there with regard
to this rivalry and others recruiting, especially in Jefferson County
and the city of Louisville. And now with Vince Marrow
recruiting for Louisville, remember now, and he dropped into Louisville
to take care of recruiting for Kentucky. They got things done.

(02:46):
So that's kind of the unspoken bond between these two
teams is, if you want to call it a bond,
the rivalry. Also, you know, people believe legislat your money
in Frankfurt. There may be some of that, but more
than anything, I truly believe it's the lifeblood of college athletics,
and that is recruiting. Look, when Rick Patino got here,
he had enormous respect for Denny Crumb and spoke about

(03:10):
him in glowing terms. Then they went ahead to head
over Dwayne Morton, a recruit that well, U of L
had the self report on the secondary violation about Morton,
and UK was recruiting him. And that was the end
of the empathy. That was the end of the of
the warm and fuzzy feelings for Rick Patino about U
of L and Denny Crumb. I don't even know if

(03:30):
he remembers that. I'm sure he does, but yeah, that's
a huge part of this. But also, yeah, bragging rights
and especially between players who aren't even from here. That's
what I like the most is guys who aren't even
from here. There are players who have come in, like
from Juco's in California, whatever, and they almost immediately why

(03:51):
because of you all, because of the fans and because
of their fellow their classmates. They hear it on campus,
Hey you got to be Louisville, We're told. When they
get here in August, fans come up to them, Hey,
you got to get Louisville. No matter what, no matter
who else you beat, you gotta beat Louisville. That kind
of thing. So that's what makes it fun. And we'll
talk more about it later on in the week, but
we do need to talk Kentucky basketball. The Wildcats taken

(04:14):
on Tennessee Tech and Mark Pope last night his first
show of the year, so this fit well. He had
a guest coach, John Pelfrey, from Tennessee Tech. He's bringing
his team as Golden Eagles into Upperna and coincidentally, of course,
Kentucky played football against Tennessee Tech. It's one of the
have nots. Let's face it, it's a mid major program

(04:38):
and Kentucky should win easily, just as it did in football.
But Pelfrey is a competitor, he really is. He was
as competitive as any player who ever came through here.
And a little bit later on, Sean Woods will join us,
as will Gary Moore West n Via Chief. They're the
guys who join us on Wednesdays. But we don't have
a show tomorrow night, so we're gonna talk to them tonight.

(05:01):
And Sean has spoken so glowingly, of course about his
former teammates. The Unforgettables. They're all in the rafters, are up,
the four of them. And he has talked before about
John Pelfrey, how competitive he is and how good a
basketball player he was. Pelfrey joined Mark Pope and Tom

(05:21):
Leach on The Mark Pope Show last night, and of
the many questions he fielded from Mark, a fellow Wildcat,
John talked about what it meant to him a kid
coming from Paintsville, a kid who Eddie Sutton signed and
didn't really want, but there was some fan pressure when
he needed bench strength. This guy was going to be

(05:42):
cannon fodder in practice every day for the great players
that he Sutton had assembled, and John was great with that.
John was fine with that. He has told me that
through the years he just wanted to be a part
of the program. And then, of course we know what happened.
Sudden left, Patino came in and he was left with
the unforgettab who turned out to be these guys that

(06:02):
people will never forget. And John talked last night about
what it was like to him just to be a
part of the program.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
When you get a chance. For me, when I got
a chance to come here, nobody thought I should have
belonged here. You won't go, you won't play all these
things right you get told to do. And so when
it finally started happening, right, like you're playing against Louisville
here at home, and you're playing against Alan Houston, and

(06:32):
you beat Bob Knight and in Indiana and the Big
Four Classic and the Whos your domb and like you
take down Kansas here in Reperna after getting absolutely destroyed
by like fifty five the year before, and you're like,
you're out there. It is just like I can't believe

(06:55):
this is happening to me. And I love it, and
I want more. I just want more.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
And that was not isolated, as Pelfrey said, this was
something that he felt every day when it came to
how he appreciated being here.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
I know everybody kind of thinks I'm a little bit
corny from time to time, but I was literally like
a kid at King's Island.

Speaker 4 (07:13):
Man.

Speaker 3 (07:14):
I knew the park was going to end, and I
was just racing around trying to get a few more
rides in. That's literally the way I spent five years here.
I could have done this for a lifetime.

Speaker 1 (07:24):
That's such a great analogy. It was like being a
king's island and mine. This is while he was working
his butt off under Rick Battino, which was like being
in boot camp. So and of course he talked with
Mark Pope, and Pope has talked glowingly as well as
the head coach when he was coaching in other places

(07:44):
about the fans here in the Big Blue Nation.

Speaker 3 (07:47):
I don't know what it's like to have a national championship,
but yeah, we really appreciate the wins. We really appreciate
the championship with the love affair with the fans and
your teammates, Like you don't have to have it every
day day, but once you get back, it's like you
never left. And it's just hard to explain to people

(08:07):
how deeply rooted it is in us.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
Yeah, unless you've lived it, how can you understand it fully.
And of course this goes back as I said to
Rick Pattino, who was supposedly mellowed with age. But there's
still the core Rick Patino in there. And we saw
this last night. His team is Saint John's team lost
to Iowa State in a great game back and forth

(08:31):
and let it get away, had a shot in the
air at the end but couldn't get it to fall.
And then after the game, a reporter asked a question
he didn't care for, and the classic Rick Patino came out.

Speaker 4 (08:42):
Rick, I've got a two part our. First, just to
flash all the way to the end of the game.

Speaker 5 (08:47):
No time, I'll call it there.

Speaker 6 (08:48):
We had two timeouts, one for an injury, and we
ran the play them we wanted the time before. We
had two timeouts in the last minute, one for an injury,
and when they called it for that question is ridiculous,
So go to the.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
That question is ridiculous. Really it wasn't, but because look,
they had a possession and came down without a timeout
and ran their last play. I've talked about this many times.
Cali Perry was like this with a veteran team. He
didn't call time out because it gives the defense a
chance to set up. Cali Perry admitted, I can't remember

(09:21):
which game, but they blew an opportunity to win because
he didn't call time out. Had such a young team
that got confused put up a bad shot. But like
it or not, Rick Pattino is a guy who will
not always call time out like that and didn't appreciate
the question. So the Classic Patino came fourth and it
always will. Up next, we're going to talk more about

(09:43):
football and college basketball a little bit later on. John
Wong's going to join us. Really interesting column he's got
out on the interweb right now, but we're gonna hear
from Sir Charles next. Charles Barkley speaks on six thirty
WLAP Welcome back to the boon Side are coming up
in a few minutes. John Wong, blogger, author, sports writer

(10:04):
talking about what's going on in sports today as an
interesting column on the interweb right now and holds everybody accountable,
including you and me. So we'll talk to John a
little bit later on our West End Bureau chief Gary
Moore and unforgettable guard Sean Woods. We usually talk on Wednesdays,
but we're bumped tomorrow for basketball, so we moved them

(10:24):
up to Tuesday. But what I failed to mention in
our first segment and I should have is UK Volleyball
playing tonight for the SEC Volleyball Championship in the tournament
down at end Market Arena in and Savannah, Georgia. They
held off Tennessee last night, again another tough one. They
dropped the first set as they did to Tennessee here

(10:46):
in Lexingon and then won the next three, but the
last they won the next two twenty five, twenty two,
twenty five point fifteen. They were rolling, but then Tennessee
got hot again and the Wildcats needed to go to
twenty five twenty three to win that four set. They
will take on Texas for the tournament championship. Remember, Kentucky
swept Texas earlier this year in Austin, so there's gonna

(11:10):
be revenge on the mind of the long Horns. But
if Kentucky gets a match tonight the way it did
from Molly Tuzzo last night, it's gonna be hard on
the long Horns. She was everywhere. She's the lie bro
if you're watching, she's the one in the alternate color jersey,
basically a defensive specialist and in a different color jersey
because she's a free substitution. There are strict sub rules

(11:33):
in volleyball. She had twenty five digs throwing herself all
over the court. That's a career high, giving her team
her teammates a chance to win it. Brooklyn Delay took
full advantage twenty two kills on forty six swings, she
had three seventy Last night, Eva Hudson eighteen kills, needed

(11:55):
fifty nine swings hit only two. Twenty Tennessee did a
good job on them. They played great, great defense, but
Cassie O'Brien had forty six assists. Brook Baltima came off
the bench, had a big match. Lizzie Carr nine kills
his three sixty four three digs in a team leading
five blocks. I've said, I don't know that this team

(12:17):
is as good as the national championship team because that
team had a lot of talent, including Maddy Skinner, who
was kind of the secret sauce, you know, coming in
off the bench at times or starting at times, or
just she was a real headache for other teams. I'm
starting to think Lizzie Carr might be the same thing
for this Kentucky team. So tonight, seven o'clock on the

(12:39):
SEC network, the Wildcats and Texas. Keep your radio on,
but watch Kentucky play volleyball for the first SEC Tournament
title since Craig Skinner's first year.

Speaker 5 (12:51):
Kentuck it and win.

Speaker 1 (12:51):
It that year, but that's the last time they had
an SEC tournament twenty years ago. So back to football.
And the Georgia Georgia Tech game is going to be
played at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta. And you might
shrug and say, yeah, okay, but this was supposed to
be the annual matchup on the Georgia Tech campus because

(13:14):
last year was Athens and they've alternated since eighteen ninety three.
They haven't missed a matchup since nineteen twenty five. But
Georgia Tech sold its game, sold its game to amb
Sports and Entertainment for ten million dollars. They're playing another
home game at Mercedes Benz next year, same deal selling

(13:37):
it now. Yeah, it's a neutral site. Georgia will outdraw
Georgia Tech. It usually does. I don't know if that's
the case in Atlanta and rather on the Georgia Tech campus.
But you think about the revenue streams that athletics directors
are looking for. Now. You may see more of this
as the years go on. If a company, an independent firm,

(13:59):
is willing to spend that kind of money and an
ad is desperately looking for revenue to buy players or
to pump into the nal coffers, whatever you want to
call it, you're going to see it happen now, this
is a perfect scenario for these two teams. And yeah,
it's in state, it's interconference, just like UKUOL, but there

(14:20):
is more history, So I think there's more national attention
for this matchup, especially because Georgia could win a national title.
But ten million bucks that can go a long way
to buying you a linemen, buying you a quarterback, buying
you linebackers. You know, you can see that happening in
a city like Atlanta, but there aren't many states and
cities where you could see that happening. But don't be

(14:43):
surprised if you do. Shifting over to basketball, to the
NBA specifically, and I just love checking in on Charles
Barkley now and then, And for whatever reason, I guess
it's because the NBAC and still kind of new, but
and there's always news about Lebron. Is he gonna play

(15:04):
as he heard or whatever. Charles Barkley the other day
waxing philosophical about Barkley versus Michael Jordan, And of course
Barkley was a contemporary of Michael Jordan, and of course
when it comes down to which is better, he's always
gonna come down for mj And he told us why.

Speaker 7 (15:25):
I've said for years, the only people talk about Lebron
and Michael. You want to know the difference between Mike
and Lebron, It's simple competitiveness, that killer instinct. Lebron don't
have it.

Speaker 1 (15:36):
And that's why a.

Speaker 7 (15:37):
Lot of people say Kobe was the closest thing to
Michael because of that fire, that obsession.

Speaker 1 (15:42):
To win no matter what. I remember one year I
won MVP.

Speaker 7 (15:47):
Next time I faced Mike Man, he took it personal.
He came out and just destroyed me. I couldn't breathe
out there. It was suffocating. Back in those days, all
the stars had pride, we all had temp but Michael
he was on another level. He didn't just want to
beat you, He wanted to break you. And I'll be honest,
he broke me that night. He made me respect him forever.

(16:09):
Lebron ain't built like that. When he can't beat you,
he switches teams. He looks for a teammate who can
do the job for him instead of figuring out how
to dominate you himself.

Speaker 5 (16:19):
That's the difference.

Speaker 1 (16:21):
Barkley gets a little personal there, and that's fine. The
one media person I heard stumping for Lebron for so
long and maybe it's because he played in Miami for
a while. That's where Dan Levitard is located. And he
was going on skill sets and he said Lebron and
MJ had similar skill sets and in paraphrasing, plus Lebron

(16:41):
is six'. Eight, well for a, WHILE i thought that makes.
Sense THEN i, thought wait a, MINUTE mj is doing
Everything lebron is doing and what was doing and was
only six' five. Or whatever michael was sixty six Smaller.
Than Lebron but I'll take barkley's opinion over. Anybody else
is really because, he's frank, he's honest he's fun, he's

(17:03):
funny but he's also a guy who went head to HEAD.
With mj doesn't owe, him anything but that's the guy.
He chooses, Up Next, john wong we'll talk to us
about what's wrong in college sports on Six thirty wlap
welcome back To The big Blue. And striday joining us
now as a longtime friend of, The Show. John wong
he is, a writer, a blogger a, Media columnist nolan,

(17:25):
media columnist and a guy who when he was, in
school when he was, an Orthodonist a. Kentucky fan now Covering,
the wildcats among. Other Things, and john you have a
very interesting column that you Posted. On twitter i'm not
sure where else, it appeared but if You follow john on,
social media you write about the fact that we're all

(17:47):
hypocrites when it comes to. College sports this is a
period in newspapers, WITHIN it i Guess The nolan. Media
group but what prompted you to?

Speaker 8 (17:57):
Write, this yeah that's been something that's brewing in my
mind for probably the past five or, six years ever
SINCE this nil train left. THE station i don't know, About,
you DICK but i think at least during the Time
that i've been, following sports everything that's, going on the
changes and the college sports landscape now are probably as

(18:20):
big as they'd.

Speaker 4 (18:21):
EVER been i don't.

Speaker 8 (18:22):
Know what can you compare It to integration was probably
just a little bit before. MY time i know that was.
Pretty significant but you TAKE this nil stuff and you
combine it with the legalization of, sports gambling that's a
one two punch right now that's going to be hard to.
Ever Top and i'll, BE frank i don't, like it

(18:45):
and it's kind of hard to express yourself with the
fact that you don't, like it you don't want to
come across as that old man yell and get off
my lawn and resisting change whenever. It comes the, truth
Is though i'm still going to follow sports regardless of.
What happens there's plenty of things left to love about
college football and basketball and softball and volleyball and. All

(19:10):
that there's still a lot, to love but there are
a lot. Of changes but the point of, the, column though,
and yes thank you. You can you can look it
up directly on Either The manchester enterprise. Dot com there's
a college sports pulled down menu tab that will take
you right, to it or you can go on to
my X Speed ky wongs and you can go directly

(19:34):
there through. That method but the point was to show
that everybody's the playing for the state that. We're in
it's the terminal case, of greed and it's not just
the players and coaches that.

Speaker 1 (19:45):
Are, involved yeah, you know and you're right that, the,
fans donors, talking, heads, administrators boosters. Bag men the media
we've all Created, is frankenstein and as, you're right we
keep feeding our. Beloved master you're, spot on and you know.
IT'S weird i was just TALKING to jeffi chorl. ABOUT
this i was driving from here To there SUNDAY and
i got to thinking about this about, you know you

(20:07):
Got the louisville game, coming up that that's a make
or break here for. The season it, really is because
it means a, bowl game. You know and people are
already back on, you know Bashing The mark stoops Train
and barnart by extension and. All right you know this
this gets just really silly. At time we're talking about
college football and there's all this vitriol and hatred and just,

(20:28):
you know nastiness within our, sports community, You know and,
you're right we're all part.

Speaker 8 (20:34):
Of it why do you think? THAT is, i mean
we Grew up dick in, the sixties super, violent decade
but yet at THAT time i felt like that we
could still have civil conversations with people that we didn't.
Agree with, you know we were able to talk to
our colleagues or co workers, or neighbors, our friends even
our enemies and still have. Civil discourse but it doesn't

(20:57):
seem to be the way that.

Speaker 4 (20:59):
Way.

Speaker 8 (20:59):
Anymore now well.

Speaker 1 (21:00):
My theory, Is This john too words, social media because
you can type anything on your computer or more than
often the not, the phone and you know why you're
still hot, about it and It's SENN and i can't
tell you Many times i've typed something and then deleted
it without sending IT because i made mistakes in the
past from sending STUFF that i. Regret it but now

(21:22):
people who you know who it doesn't take an ounce
of courage to tweet something behind and even their, real
name but generally it's a it's an avatar or fake name.
Or whatever and, you know it used to be people
would call into to talk shows and, you know vent
their spleen and that. Was fine, you know people like
me and they're hundreds of us would talk, to them

(21:44):
but it wasn't. As nasty it started, getting nasty but
it wasn't nearly. As, BAD john i don't think as,
social media and that includes now, you know fire, The
COACH and I think i've told, you This and i've
said it many times. To me it's people who are
really saying between, The lines i'm angry and someone needs to,

(22:05):
be punished and they don't punish the players because there's
too many. Of them and in the, college athletics when,
the sport when the coaches are demigods and paychecks have
a lot to do. With that, you know you got
to punish, the, coach right he didn't drop, the ball
he didn't miss. The go but somebody's got to pay
for me. Being angry does that?

Speaker 8 (22:23):
Make sense you got to find, A scapegoat and if
the scapegoat is getting paid nine dollars, a year it's
a lot easier to throw rocks. At him but my
admiration for Guys Like big gabriel, longevity wise have been
at this for, so long just grows higher and higher
every Day because i've learned that if you're a, calling

(22:44):
this if you have an opinion, about anything it doesn't
matter what. It is after you put it, out there
you better have thick skin because they're going to be
a bunch of people who. Love you they're going to
be a bunch of people who want to call you
everything in, the book going to point boat barrels at.

Speaker 4 (23:02):
You and let you.

Speaker 1 (23:03):
Have it people are obviously going. After stoops and then
of course when you go after, the coach you go after.
The Ad And, mitch barnhart as you've, pointed out his
old school when it comes to ads and most of
the guys, with longevity they are because if you've BEEN
around uk athletics really as LONG as, i have and
you have been for. A while, you know you're identified with,

(23:25):
your hires you're identified with your your higher. PROFILE sports
a lot of the People destroying barnhart now. Over stoops
we're In rupp aerna applauding the Hire Of. Mark pope,
you know but after the latest, football loss so you
got to swing that door.

Speaker 8 (23:39):
Right back but that's the beauty OF the. Uk sports you.
Can diversify you can find so many. Things here it's
like the, stock. Market right you don't want to put
all your eggs in. One basket, and boy the fan
base that is, so fickle and part of it is because.
They're passionate there's nothing. AGAINST passion i wrote a whole

(24:00):
Book about kentucky Passion in. Kentucky basketball but it does
tend to go overboard sometimes to the point where people
just don't make any more. Rational sound, you know we're all.

Speaker 1 (24:11):
Experts when it comes. To, sports football everybody goes by wins.
And losses you can see the, game unfolding and, you
know having known a lot of different ads and having
talked to former ads and assistant ads through, my career
such as. It is, you know you learn and you
know this from. Common sense there's so much that. Goes
on It's that, iceberg, thing man it's, you know so

(24:33):
much below the surface of the water that goes on
that people never know about when it comes, to athletics,
you know.

Speaker 8 (24:41):
And, especially yeah especially in this particular case where or
you just don't know WHERE this nil train is ultimately
going to, be headed which station isn't going to arrive
at the SITUATIONS. OF math i attended a FORUM on
nil just. Last month they had several experts come together

(25:02):
and the only thing that they could agree on was
that things are, a mess and all of them were
just very doubtful that the issue could be resolved within the.
Next year so this is not going to be a.
Quick fix there's so much uncertainty about situations like like
thirty party Collectives were title nine, fits in and how

(25:23):
the power conferences have completely different needs and wants than
the smaller schools when it COMES. TO nil i think
the only thing that they agreed on was there are
these rogue agents out there who are taking advantage of
all these athletes in. The SYSTEM and i think if
there's one Thing that congress might be able to agree on,

(25:44):
relatively quickly is to put an end to all these
predatory agents.

Speaker 1 (25:49):
OUT there i don't, See, how john because every one
of them's got a lawyer or is. A lawyer AND as,
I understand i was Talking to Jeff, bicor o part
of our, radio crews, you Know and jeff many many
years Covering the big League's Covering Major league baseball And
the bengals when he was Working. Up CINCINNATI apparently i didn't,
know this but apparently some of these agents out there

(26:10):
now are taking these college kids for between ten and,
fifteen percent whereas in, the pros at Least, In baseball,
jeff said agents now get, three percent and when it
comes to endorsements one and a. Half percent that.

Speaker 9 (26:23):
Is a world.

Speaker 1 (26:24):
Of difference you Cover, the bengals you go Up to.
REDS games, i mean that's an entirely, different universe.

Speaker 8 (26:30):
Isn't it it's absolutely night. And day and what makes
it even more scary in this, particular situation it's when
these agents sign these college aged kids to these, enormous
percentages they also end up extending those percentages into whenever
they signed their. Pro contract that is. Absolutely.

Speaker 1 (26:53):
Criminal yeah, you know when we talk about what's happening
in sports with, THE nil i always Go back corseedobannon case.
Was PIVOTAL but i think so much of this has
been exacerbated by the stories that are, out there and
of course we have to cover these and fans deserve
to know what these coaches. Are making and the numbers just.

(27:16):
Keep skyrocketing and what's, Really, bizarre john is the stories
this year about the coaches fired mid season, or buyouts
WHAT they're i think somebody added it up just in
the highest, profile jobs half a billion dollars not to,
coach okay and yet you've got these crazy rumors about
what schools are ready To Pay, lane kiffin who's been

(27:38):
fired three or, four times but he's the flavor of
the month and he's going to get. Paid AGAIN and
i really believe that that's where a lot of this, stuff
started all these stories with these huge, dollar figures, you
know and that's not. Going away you figure where is
it all going?

Speaker 8 (27:55):
To end because this can't. Be sustainable you look at
so we talk about thirty seven million, dollar dieout is
that that's kind of one of the highest that's. Ever
been and then you look where, he ranks and it's
it's nowhere near the top of what these coaches. Potentially
Have and University of kentucky already so much in. The hole,

(28:18):
you know they've got that twenty two million that every
year they have to kind of be able. To sustain
they've already taken a loan out. On that, it's ah yah.
YA yai i. DON'T know i just want to enjoy.

Speaker 1 (28:32):
THE game, I know i know we're Talking To. John
wong he is a retired orthodontis but now a, sports
writer and of course we're talking about college athletics with
a big game Coming up saturday and basketball all over.
The place we'll talk More with john on the other
side of the break here on SIX Thirty wlap, Welcome
Back Doctor john wong is. My Guest wong's whinings is,
His Blog yels' Rights For Nolan. Media group he has

(28:55):
an interesting column out there on the interweb or In the,
Manchester Newspaper, the enterprise and the headline is we have met.
The enemy and to, be fair the picture accompanying the
column is That Of. Mitch barnhart you're not saying he's.
THE enemy, i know it's a.

Speaker 8 (29:08):
Little, bit yeah if you read, the, article though you'll
find out that he's actually the good guy and all one.

Speaker 4 (29:15):
Of them never believe what.

Speaker 8 (29:17):
You read you never know what they editors.

Speaker 4 (29:18):
Put true.

Speaker 1 (29:20):
You KNOW and i may have talked about this with,
you BEFORE but i mentioned on. The show it might
have been last year when we were talking ABOUT an
i was on A k eet panel Show With mitch
barnhardt and he talked about just what you, mentioned earlier
the fact that, you've, got however many SCHOOLS playing d
one football more than double THAT playing d. One basketball

(29:42):
everybody has, individual needs conferences have individual goals, and needs and,
you know they're all competing for the. Same dollars And
when barnard was accused of dragging his feet when it
came to, the nil and he, BASICALLY said i JUST
want i just need some, guard ray, You know and
then what do. You know they have a bit of

(30:04):
a scandal a couple three years ago when they got
players taking money for jobs they weren't showing, up for
and that was that was, very troublesome. You know so
he just he, WAS saying i don't want to be
in a situation where the university is being accused of
breaking rules that didn't. Really exist not that those, those
kids uh didn't didn't. Do that those kids were in,

(30:26):
The wrong but that's, entirely possible, you know when you
it's Like WHEN. Joe b hall Built A. Joe b
Hall Wilk at lodge turned into plans OF. The ncaa, they,
said yeah you're, fine building and then after the fact, they,
said nope. Too fancy, you know they just didn't want
he just didn't want to get bitten after the fact
because there were no guardrails and there are. Very few
there are a, Few more john but there are precious few,

(30:47):
right now.

Speaker 8 (30:48):
You know and that kind of circles back to the
point of the article is that really it becomes a.
Systemic problem we are where we are because everybody wants
to keep up With. The jon it literally Is A wild,
west mentality and it seems like that the winner is
going to be the one who's aggressive enough to push

(31:09):
the boundaries without toppling over the entire house. Of cards
either you've got to go ahead and take, those risks
and those who are followers are going to end up
being being. Left behind so that's, the question are you
willing to take the risk if you got to adapt
the mentality, of okay it's a lot easier to beg
for forgiveness than to ask for permission in.

Speaker 1 (31:30):
Moving, FORWARD well i mentioned social, media earlier and, You
know i'm not taking a swipe at. THE fan i
think it's it's the. Squeaky wheels, you know. IT'S not
i don't think it's the, overwhelming majority but you know
that that is a legion that. Is growing but on the,
other hand these are the folks footing, the bill, you
know paying more and more, for tickets, for parking. For
concessions you point that out in, Your, column uh, You

(31:53):
know and and then when they see these the Quarterback At,
arizona state apparently it's getting, you know million dollar offers
already from everybody ELSE but asu and ads and coaches
being paid insane amounts. Of money and it's what the market.
Cost for but that doesn't make it feel, any better.
Does it.

Speaker 8 (32:14):
It doesn't and when you, mentioned that IT just i
can't help, but chuckle because it does show how hypocritical we.
Can be and, BY we i mean me. To MYSELF oh,
I want.

Speaker 4 (32:26):
I want I'm a.

Speaker 8 (32:27):
KENTUCKY fan i don't make any bones. ABOUT that i
want the school to. COME out i want them to.
BE relevant i want them to be On ESPN's. TOP
ten i want them to make the twelve team playoffs.
IN football i want them to win national championships. In
basketball but on the, Other hand i'm not Quite sure
i'm willing to be the one that will put the

(32:48):
bill for all of, this right and it all comes down.
THE money, i mean You heard soups on his press
conference to the media that he sure Hopes that kentucky
can get, enough support but his implication while that whoever
has the money is going to be head and shoulders
above the rest of, the field.

Speaker 1 (33:05):
Flat out flat out. Said, it yeah. YOU'RE right a
few minutes up With Doctor. John, wong well let's talk about.
THE game i think they're looking at the same Challenge
with louisville that they Did, with vanderbilt going in with,
you know one arm tied behind. Our mac they're, back
defensively and the you know defense had really carried this
team for. A while now, you're, down however many d

(33:25):
backs and you, KNOW lining, i mean you're down a
half your. Starting lineup it, seems like, you know Here's
a louisville team that's stinging right now from getting their
butts kicked and they've been knocked out of the college.
Football picture what do you see coming Up? On saturday.

Speaker 8 (33:41):
You got a GOOD coin i can, flip dick because
with this, rivalry game you just.

Speaker 1 (33:45):
NEVER know, i.

Speaker 8 (33:46):
Mean it seems like that the underdog ends up winning
just as much as as the paper does on something. Like,
this now it's even hard from a mindset standpoint to
determine which team is in a better emotional state. RIGHT
now i would argue that It is kentucky that they've
got just maybe a little bit more to play for
based on where they were at the, very BEGINNING or

(34:10):
i should say the middle of the season was everything
was kind of. Rolling downhill and what you mentioned is
absolutely true about. The defense that's why the Loss of
vandy was, so disappointing because you knew they were, down
defensively but the defensive played so well in those three
games leading up. TO that, i, mean actually if you

(34:30):
throw Out the, tennessee game the defense that really played
fairly consistently throughout, the year and then, the offense you
saw how it was skyrocketing and being much more efficient
and then to just kind of lay that does like
they did Down in nashville was just extremely disappointing. And
discouraging i'm not giving up. On him i'm a little

(34:52):
bit down on MYSELF because i actually predicted seven and
five at the beginning of. The year so now that
they're mathematically eliminated from those, seven, wins yeah IT'S like
i got punched in. The face but they Can. Beat
louisville i'm not saying, they will but they got a
legitimate shot than if they win that. Bowl game they
can still win seven games.

Speaker 1 (35:13):
This year, OH yeah, I AGREE and i also predicted.
SEVEN wins i wasn't sure where the seventh would. Come
FROM and I but i didn't think they had a Shot,
against texas and that's a should have. Win game he
put that in the should have one that could have,
Won game and there.

Speaker 8 (35:26):
Were a couple of wet we count those that can't
Count those, kentucky football.

Speaker 1 (35:30):
That's right but the other thing Too. Is vandy i'd forgotten.
About this vandy had an extra week, to prepare and
all Credit. To vandy they had a superb, game play
especially on defense with all those blitz packages they put
in and really made life Miserable For. CUTTER bully i
Do believe louisville will try to do the. Same thing
he's going to be better prepared for. That now, but uh,

(35:52):
you know it reminds me Of When tim tebow came,
in there and that, you Know The, Urban meyer florida
team came in out of the extra week. To prepare
that makes a, big difference don't you think?

Speaker 8 (36:03):
It does and They also mandy also had a pretty darn. Good, quarterback.
HEY exactly i love watching.

Speaker 1 (36:11):
Him playing I'm A maxwell. AWARD voter i voted him.
Number one you vote, for four three or, four PEOPLE and,
I said I know, i'm BIASED but i covered the
sec eyeballed. THIS kid i watched him on. TO you i.
WATCHED it i watch a lot, of football my wife can,
tell You and i'm telling you this Guy and pacorrel
pointed it. Out again I've quoted jeff. All, night uh

(36:31):
but he made a great point on the air and off,
he said this kid is the most valuable player in.
College football he might not Win, a heisman although you
ought to Be In, New york but did you think that?
HOLDS up i think.

Speaker 8 (36:42):
THAT'S fair i THINK so, i think first, of all
do you think he has a chance IN the nfl?
AT all i mean.

Speaker 1 (36:51):
We talked about that. As well it's going to take
a team that has the guts to at least bring him,
to camp give him. A SHOT and i keep thinking
back in a good buddy of mine who texted me
before the game and predicted. A shootout well there was
half of. A shootout but he was an undersized quarterback,

(37:12):
as well, my friend so he loves him and he
is A Huge doug. Fluteie fan and EVERY time I,
WATCHED pobby, i think could someone please give him? A
shot because every team that took a Shot with flutey they.
Were successful, you know he Won great Cups. In canada
he had he got, A right, i mean he was
A successful, nfl quarterback but a lot of teams just

(37:34):
didn't have the guts to, play, Him, right.

Speaker 8 (37:37):
Pomya he's one of. THESE guys, i mean his statistics
again And against kentucky, were. Great fantastic but then he's
also the kind of guy that when it's third and
sixth and the games on, the line who better would
you want than to be him directly directing. The offense
it Was fantastic boughton. OF mine I just i just.

Speaker 1 (37:58):
Love, IT yep, I agree he's it's fun to Watch
and vandy's the kind of team you root for unless
they're playing against the team that you follow on the team,
you cover, because hey well.

Speaker 8 (38:08):
The traditionally, yeah yeah well they are traditional door Matts.
With Kentucky and i'd be LYING if i said it
didn't hurt a little bit more to see them rise
and shoulders above the cast.

Speaker 1 (38:20):
Now WOW and i also Voted For clark Lee for
coach Of. THE year i want to see if they can,
sustain it but he's done the job. This Year john
wong does the Job For Nolan media Group And wong's
whinings that's. HIS blog i urge you to check out his.
Latest column IF you i can't find it On The,
manchester enterprises Go To john's twitter page and you'll little.
Find it but it's a well done and Balanced and

(38:41):
john very. Well Written and i'll See.

Speaker 8 (38:43):
You, Saturday yes and to all the listeners, out there
have a very Very. Happy thanksgiving we have much to
be thankful for in this Season. Of Thanksgiving THANKS.

Speaker 1 (38:54):
Doc i number two with Our usual, Wednesday Lineup sean
Woods And gary moore next than six ALREADY W i
p welcome back To The Big boo insider joining us

(40:59):
now he does it, every week Usually, on wednesday but
schedule is a little bit different. This Week So, sean
woods the unforgettable guard joining us today two days Out. From,
thanksgiving coach before we talk, ABOUT hoops i want to
ask you About the, thanksgiving week both as a coach and.
A Player and i've heard actually, football COACHES but i
got to think basketball coaches may be the same players

(41:22):
who go to the coach, and, say, HEY coach, i
mean like, Freshman coach i'm not going to get to
go Home. For, thanksgiving well what was it like when
you went away from home for the first time AS a?
Uk player and, you know you realize you probably knew ahead,
of time but plus you had Family. In LEXINGON but,
i mean it's a, different world. Isn't?

Speaker 4 (41:41):
It yeah, it is because, you know the holidays is
when you want to be, with family so on and.
So forth, but man if you're a big time of,
basketball player you want to, play games and a lot
of times you're playing games over the, holidays now, you
know and so it kind of takes it takes the
nostalgia away of being homesick during the holidays because you're

(42:03):
actually playing throughout. Those days, you Know like pelfrey's coming
to Play a Kentucky on, wednesday tomorrow Which, is wednesday Day,
before thanksgiving and maybe they do get to hear give
them a couple. OF days i don't know if they
got a Game on Saturday or sunday, or what but
not normally you do Not get thanksgiving off a lot.
OF times a lot of Schools get christmas off like
two three days. At, max yeah but you know that's

(42:27):
the that's the mistique of being a, college athletes especially during,
basketball season because your your season is right around the
time when they with the major holidays and, You, Know,
Thanksgiving Christmas new year's, you know so it's all you
know about. Buckling down but you do have as, a
coach you make it so that You have thanksgiving dinner

(42:48):
at your place or something. Like that so these guys
playing fields. Of, nostalgia then, you know then join the
holidays and sometimes your family comes in and join in
and if they're far away, or whatever. That's whatever or
if you're playing a, game away, you know you you
just do it in a hotel to find a nice place,
to eat, you know saying fort And have. Thanksgiving dinner but,
you know it's just part of of, course now, you

(43:09):
know because, you know basketball season is so busy and
and it just happened to be almost, you know, the
holidays the special major Holidays and Thanksgiving. And.

Speaker 1 (43:17):
CHRISTMAS yeah i remember One Of cameron mills's. Favorite stories
i've heard him tell more. Than once when he was.
A freshman of course he. Was local but the last
PRACTICE before i think It, was christmas and, he wondered
like when he was done with whatever he had, to
DO and I guess patino was doing some, you know post.
Practice work he asked one of the, veteran, players hey

(43:40):
can we go? Home now can? You imagine and the other,
players said why don't you go? Ask that why don't
you go? Ask coach can you Imagine Asking? Rick Patino
that it did? Not go oh, my god it did.
Not go but you know there are, also TIMES and
i got to, TELL you i don't know if this
happened when you, were playing but some school schedule games
in the, half noon like on the twenty second or,

(44:01):
twenty third so the kids can get out early and
go home and, YOU guys i don't remember if you guys,
did this, but players they're the, Worst interviews like whoever
they bring out for interviews at, that point those kids
just want to get to the airport or get to the.
Car whatever they give you three word answers and they
book out. Of THERE but I guess i can't. Blame
them but like, you said that's part of the part

(44:22):
of the sacrifice when you're playing. College basketball what about high?
SCHOOL hoops, i mean of course everybody lives, at home
but do you are you gonna do anything with your
team or just turn.

Speaker 4 (44:31):
Them, loose no we're gonna. Practice today we'll practice early
in the. Morning tomorrow then we let them go on
and enjoy tomorrow afternoon and all Day, On thursday thanksgiving
good and then we'll come Back on friday because we
have a Game. On saturday we had a Scrimmage at Newport, on,
saturday so, you know but they're all excited, about it,
You know but, you know in high school it's not

(44:53):
as much because these kids, are local so they do,
get to, you know, you know enjoy. The holidays and as,
for me, the coach same THING because i spent a lot,
of years, You, Know christmas thanksgiving on, the road Just,
like pale you KNOW what, i mean At least pales
only two and a half hours away. From football, YOU
know i would be Out in vegas or playing somebody

(45:13):
for a money game Somewhere Out west coast and it would,
be tough so we would have to just, you know
kumbayao with. Each other but it brought us closer.

Speaker 1 (45:21):
Though too there are games that are, out there the,
you know the high profile Games in vegas and THINGS
that i was watching some of them, Last, night sean
and they were, really competitive really, good games but there
were so many. Empty SEATS and i know they're MADE
for tv and there's money involved in, all that but
is that good for? THE game, i mean, you know

(45:41):
now we watch EVERYTHING, on tv and it's just seems
weird that a big time cross regional game Like In
oregon auburn has played in front of so many. Empty, Seats.

Speaker 4 (45:57):
Well oregon doesn't draw a, lot anyway especially on. The
road Nor, does auburn even though they've had some. Recent
success but, you know if you Do, A, Kentucky arizona
Carolina or duos or something, like that You, know kansas they're,
gonna travel but everybody. Doesn't travel and then two you
got to throw, you know what's going on in the

(46:17):
world into the, equation too with how bad, travel is
how tough, travel is, you know things. Like That so
i'm not surprised that, you know you're playing at a
neutral spot and hardly no. Fans there it's just part for.
The course but, you know the blue bloods. Do, draw,
auburn unfortunately is a, powerfot school but it's not a
blue blood Nor. Is Oregon so i'm not surprised. With

(46:39):
that but, you know if there Was a kentucky or
a little something, like that, you knew, you know those
stands would be PACKED amongst i mean more so.

Speaker 1 (46:46):
Than ever it'd be a lot better at least In the.
Lawer arena, you're right it would look BETTER. For tv
And When carolina kentucky played out There, in Vegas When
malik monk would, not say had a, great CROWD so
i guess. That's fair And When Ohio satan kentucky played, out,
there well You mentioned john pel for your old teammate
coming to Town With. Tennessee, tech uh he's had. Several
jobs uh he struggled at some done okay. At others,

(47:09):
but man you're you're and you know what it's like to.
Be you you played IN. THE ovc i mean when
you're climbing up. That hill He's a. Tennessee, Tech, now
uh tell me about the challenge of, being it, you
know to, be kind it's more of a. Regional, school.

Speaker 4 (47:24):
Well you KNOW when i was in, the league it
was to me it was way. More tougher, you know You,
have harry You, had belmont You had austin T. At eastern,
you know those teams aren't in, it anymore you KNOW what.

Speaker 9 (47:36):
I mean.

Speaker 4 (47:38):
But now it's just a. Different Dynamic and john's had
some some some some some trials a little bit as
far as you know now with THIS N i l
and things. Like that you, know that, YOU know i
THINK his i think he's in the right spot now
because they're doing a better JOB WITH N. I l
you look just look at how how what a major
turnaround their football team had.

Speaker 10 (47:59):
This year yeah, that's so, You know i'm looking for
some good things. With him it's been an uphill battle a,
little bit but, You know john's a stickler and he
finds a way, and hopefully, you know he can really.
TURN around i talked to him, a lot and he
really likes, his, team says the deepest team. He's had so,
you know he's been plagued with injuries, a lot, you
know and even with, my son, you know couldn't help

(48:20):
him as MUCH as i we would, have liked, you know.

Speaker 4 (48:22):
Because of the. Shoulder INJURY but i think he's healthy.
THIS year i think he really likes. HIS team i think,
he's rejuvenated and, you know He's got god on. The side,
you know he's got that Angel, with tracy, you know
and things. Like THAT so i see good things happening
with him.

Speaker 1 (48:37):
This, year yeah you've talked about him and, your teammates.
The unforgettables you guys are all up in the rafters
so many times, with me and the fact that and
we agree that people underestimated the value that you guys
Brought To rick potino's first year because you guys knew
how to. Play basketball, you know you weren't just, hangers on,

(48:59):
you know guys from the in the, The bench oh
they might get, some minutes that kind, of thing and
you were. Highly recruited but tell me about that when
it folds into the coaching that you Do That john
pelfrey does the fact that you knew the game, so, well.

Speaker 8 (49:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (49:12):
We did, you know we were fortunate we were well
coached in, high school, middle school you KNOW what. I mean,
so yeah kind of made. Those easier, you know as,
a whole we weren't, as athletic but we showed you
that if you can know how, to play, you know
you can knock of some athleticism if you just better,
BASKETBALL players i mean A Lost steph curry and Go To.
State warriors so, you know and you got the best

(49:34):
Coach in america who's actually. Driving us, you know we
just used to frustrate him a lot because we weren't
as athletic as he would, have liked, you know coming
From The New york knicks and things. Like that but,
you know we kind of made it easier for him
too because we were so intelligent.

Speaker 1 (49:48):
Basketball, players yeah and this is, A Guy, john pelfrey who,
you know the, redheaded kid the local kid looks Like
As eddie murphy used to Call Him Lillo. Opie cunningham
and yet that as, a competitor isn't? HE sean, i
mean did he do anything to win.

Speaker 4 (50:03):
A game i'll tell you what. YOU know i tell
people all, THE time i was fortunate in our status to.
This day i'll go to war with those guys. Right,
now yeah if we had to start it over in. Today's,
Game now i'm picking THOSE guys i, ran With and
i'm Pretty and i'm sure that we would be highly
successful because of OUR BASKETBALL i q. And, competitivits yeah

(50:25):
and uh he.

Speaker 1 (50:26):
Could throw it down. A dunk i saw him.

Speaker 4 (50:27):
Do, It, well hey it.

Speaker 11 (50:29):
Took it it took it.

Speaker 4 (50:30):
Four years it took to get some, good ones but
they they came in the most opportunity times in THE
N C Double. A, tournament buddy, so hey you know
you you know you, six seven six eight and it
you know you. Don't dunk that wasn't that he. Couldn't,
dunk shoot but it was. A, chore man you got
to do extra when you also Working With. Rick, Patino
man i'm saving as much ENERGY as i possibly can

(50:52):
KNOWING that i dunk or lay it up OR whatever
i got turned, right back, right back right back around
and get into.

Speaker 1 (50:58):
That press by, the way Speaking Of, RICK pattino i
had a SoundBite on the show earlier his team lost
a tough One To. Iowa State let It. Get away
had a shot in the air at, the end but it.
Didn't work reporter asked a question that he shouldn't should
have probably given a little more thought to, And, yeah rick,
of course let. Him know it was a. Ridiculous question
so he might have softened a Little, bit sean but

(51:19):
not maybe as much as. We, think right let me tell.

Speaker 4 (51:22):
You something he's not still good for, no reason.

Speaker 1 (51:27):
That's right you Know what.

Speaker 4 (51:28):
I'm saying you don't change and become softer or, get
older and still says to stay as successful as. He has,
you know he ain't. Changing much, you know he may
change the way he relates to, these kids but he's
still driving them and pushing them and has those same
expectations of making you, be comfortable become comfortable. Being uncomfortable so,
you know it's just like a. Little boy if he's

(51:51):
a bad, little boy you're. Not worried you're worried if
he's not a little bad. Little boy you KNOW what,
I mean.

Speaker 1 (51:55):
I Do sean woods is the unforgettable Guard as jersey
hangs In the raptors, up now the head Coach At
Scott County. High school we'll come back with more in
just a minute here on SIX thirty wlap welcome back
or Talking To. Sean woods, he is of course with
us each and. Every week a day earlier this week
because of the. Holiday Break, BUT sewan i want TO
ash ca was talking with YOU about Uk And tennessee tech,

(52:17):
coming up but of course they're. Coming up that win
get well. Game over Loyal to maryland fans ultimately don't.
Like it they like to see their team blow, people
out but they want they want you guys every night
To Play, North carolina Indiana. Or louisville they want every game,
to be, you know a marquee matchup. Like that and
you mentioned money games or. Paycheck games that's what it

(52:38):
Was for Loyal. To maryland but. It's hard it's harder
and harder for schools to schedule now so much is
TIED into tv h, you KNOW national tv games MADE for.
Tv games but aren't there times you need a game
like that to work on your team and, you know
not not just something well. Beyond practice you Know what,
i'm saying no doubt.

Speaker 4 (52:59):
About IT and i was ready, at timely at a,
timely manor and RIGHT now uk needs all the confidence
and reps that they can get playing against somebody else
as they. Can get and, YOU know i always came
in HERE because i knew there's no one in, the
country especially now, right now this early in, the season

(53:20):
that got everything in that's clicking on. All cylinders and
THAT'S how i used to motivate. My guys, You know
that's why YOU know i was able to beat a
couple high major teams just catching them off guard because
they're going to. Underestimate you they don't have all their.
Stuff in, you know if you throw a couple of wrinkles,
in there so on and so FORTH that i know
they haven't worked, on yet you have. A chance and
that's what these low major schools do when they're playing the,

(53:42):
money games is you know you're going in there. To
COMPETE and i was always. In there, YOU know i
try to win every, single game no MATTER who i,
was PLAYING and i prepared. That way and a lot
of teams don't at the low. Major level they just
go in there and get the check and be on.
With it but, YOU know i didn't. LIKE that i wasn't.
Like that I'm sure pels not. Like that and, that's why,
you know you some teams have come in here and if,

(54:04):
you Know not kentucky off For any. Power five, YOU
know i Remember When rick Bird at belmont walked in
there and Knocked Up north carolina, years ago and, you
know and AND and i was just coming into the
to the O v c at that. Particular time so
he taught me how to be a, better coach just
from a, defensive end because he ran all that. Crazy stuff,

(54:24):
and UH once i was able to conquer, HIM defensively,
I thought i can. Guard anybody my teams can. Guard
anybody and and you know that's.

Speaker 1 (54:31):
What happened did you have a favorite upset win when
you were a as a AS a d?

Speaker 4 (54:35):
One coach, OH yeah I beat i beat we beat
you know some on the. Road too, you know we
beat We beat Cal At cal unfortunately that was uh
that Was, coach fox Who Who's mark. Post assistant we
knocked him off my last Year at southern at at
at at Uh. At. Cal, yeah uh, you know we

(54:57):
knocked out some big time in, majors too you Know what.
I'm saying so it's, it's, Uh yeah i've had some
some some some some good wins under my belt outside
of the campus, money game so, you know that's what
you do. It for, and uh, you know but at
the end of, the day, those schools no matter how
bad you beat those teams or i mean tead you.
Knock off once you get into, your conference you still,

(55:17):
you know got to win, three games four Games in
march you get to. The, ncaaterment yeah nobody.

Speaker 1 (55:21):
Cares what you did at a. Conference either you gotta
get gotta get as well before.

Speaker 4 (55:25):
You hit it onto your cap for then that's right
before we head into.

Speaker 1 (55:29):
The break fondest Memories? From thanksgiving did you have A favorite?
Thanksgiving dish how did things go with?

Speaker 4 (55:36):
Your, clan well my mom, and dad, my mom, my
family they're big. Time cooks my in law's big. Time
cooks my sister in law is now big Time cook so,
you know food has always been the fruit for the
soul in. My family and cooking is just, you know
like like like you got high, Major talent cooking is
a high major talent in. MY family i just didn't.

(55:57):
Get it, You know i'm the runn of the family
when it comes. To THAT i'm i don't have the
major athleticism when it comes. To cooking, you know it passed,
over me even the passion to cook passed. Over ME
but i could sit. And WATCH if i really had
to take care of myself, AND cook i Could because
i've been. Around it but not. My thing, YOU know
i keep, the Company but i'm trying to eat all the.

(56:18):
Candy yams my wife learned from, you know my mother
and grandmother and her family how to cook greens and.
Green beans that's her. Favorite dish and, really, Yeah man
so you know, my family, you know we, were unorthodox,
not unorthodox but you know my grandmother cooked turtle. And groundhall, oh,
man yeah, you, know yeah so you know we we

(56:41):
we we, eat. Everything man, and uh, YOU know i
can't wait for for for, you know in the next
couple of days to see what, you know my folks are. Putting,
together now back, IT up.

Speaker 1 (56:50):
I cut you off that he did you? Say groundhog.

Speaker 4 (56:53):
I've had. Groundhol. Before yeah, my, grandmother man my grandmother,
Cooked groundhog she, cooked turtles. A coon she could, you
know we're, cutting, folks man. MY family i rushed. The
road so, you, know hey anything that had a heartbeat
that had meat, on it you Know what.

Speaker 1 (57:11):
I'm, saying.

Speaker 4 (57:13):
Oh.

Speaker 1 (57:14):
That's great now there's a groundhol that lives in. OUR
backyard i can't. Say that my wife's got this thing
of a camera in, the backyard and and she likes
capturing the image of possum raccoon ground all back in.
Our backyard, you're saying that's that's a smortgage board, right.

Speaker 4 (57:31):
There, right well it's not a smortgage boar because you
don't catch them all. The time but whenever she, caught
one she sure we'll.

Speaker 1 (57:36):
Cook it and that goes back to. Her childhood, i'm,
guessing oh no doubt.

Speaker 4 (57:41):
About it, you know my, my grandfa my great grandfather
FROM where, i heard, you know used to used to
go out and hud turtles for.

Speaker 1 (57:47):
A living, oh, Really wow well people, believe.

Speaker 4 (57:50):
Frogs, you, know, yeah, frogs rabbit.

Speaker 1 (57:52):
All that what part of the world did they?

Speaker 4 (57:54):
Come from they from right Over Down winchester road and rush,
the road, you know if you're Going out worchester on. Twenty,
seven yeah and you got that firehouse right there on
your left. Hand, side yeah that's what's the Road That's.
Uttinger town you turn up in there and that's when that's,
that's when that's when my family was born and raised that.
Out there that's our that's.

Speaker 1 (58:11):
Our heritage so there probably aren't a whole lot of
well to, this day probably not a lot of turtles
and groundhogs in.

Speaker 4 (58:17):
That, area yes, it, is uh you still you still
get your shoot there. Every, now now my grandmother used
to drive. The, church okay she was head out there at.
The church she Lived On georgetown Street On, rosevelt boulevard
right across From From. Douglas park and when she go
to Church, on sundays she every now and then she
assue turtle trying to cross. The road she pick, it

(58:37):
up open, a trunk throw it in, the trunk go,
to church, lead church, come home get one of those
ten buckets filling up. With water put that turtle, in
there feed, it bread fattened it up because she's ready to.

Speaker 8 (58:47):
Clean, it man YOU and i have done.

Speaker 1 (58:49):
A lot of interviews through. The years this is this
is the best line of questioning that we've. Ever done,
is now have you tried? The, turtle well you said
you have the, ground yeah? The groundhole, oh yeah, oh
yeah what's.

Speaker 10 (59:03):
It like.

Speaker 4 (59:07):
It's different. It's different turtle is. Really good turtles. Really
good and the thing about this but you know when
she's cleaning, it though that's. That's funk will run.

Speaker 1 (59:16):
You out of.

Speaker 4 (59:16):
The house once you put it in grave and put
that season and that that's rail to run that funk out. Of.

Speaker 1 (59:22):
There, quick turtle the turtle of, the groundhog the groundhog
groundhoves got?

Speaker 4 (59:27):

was fooling like telling him it, was chicken and he
loved it until until he got went in it ran in.
The kitchen, one time my grandmother was in there cooking
and the and the turtle was in there on the
flying pot and it was. Moving around that.

Speaker 1 (59:46):
Ain't chicken, Hey Listen steve MOSS and i want to
roll with some other. Sports reporters we Are And fried
calamari and these guys were like eating, IT up i
Mean killing and when it was, almost done, we said

Speaker 8 (01:00:01):

(01:00:45):
As promised West N Bureau Chief, gary moore a day
early because of, the holiday but he has much on.

Speaker 9 (01:00:49):
His, mind hey two guys in a six. Pack dickets.
Finally here we've waited all year. For It hate week
HAS Arrived, Uk, Louisville TRINITY, Saint X george Kittle Versus,
will compton Hoplo. Versus jordan.

Speaker 5 (01:01:03):
It's here.

Speaker 9 (01:01:04):
Let's go first, Things FIRST saturday acc networking HERE. In
wlap High As, hell noon twenty, Twenty five BUMMED out
bbn the Beleaguered Brom backers battle Of The bluegrass louisville
a slim three, point favorite but really flip. A coin
both teams got, big problems cards probably have more. Of
Them dick lowsey, offensive line, quarterback issues the two best

(01:01:26):
running backs and their best. Wide receiver out three game
losing streak, after those DREAMS of acc championship and playoffs
are doused.

Speaker 1 (01:01:35):
Stoops six and Five.

Speaker 9 (01:01:36):
Against Louisville curry journal Columnists cl brown thinks THAT if,
uk wins It'll be mark's best coaching, job EVER which
i would ARGUE that i think that was twenty eighteen
when they finished twelfth and they ended that losing Streak.

Speaker 5 (01:01:48):
To florida would you agree with any?

Speaker 1 (01:01:50):
Of that WHAT does uk have to do?

Speaker 5 (01:01:52):
To win WHAT does U of l have to do?
To win, for me it's who's tougher in, the trenches
as is always.

Speaker 1 (01:01:57):
The, case well in terms of putting a team together
to nuts, AND bolts i go, With you but in
terms of the, Big picture i'll go With, cl yeah
because there's been so much noise about. This season the
schedule has, been brutal he is now down. The stretch
he's had injuries to. His team but because of everything
you just, brought up this game's a toss up would

(01:02:19):
HAVE been I think louisville by at least a touchdown
early in, the year BUT now i think it's a.
Pick them what a difference a, month, Makes too think
About this october, twenty fifth a month, Ago today Louisville
Beat boston college six.

Speaker 9 (01:02:31):
And one there were sixteenth in. THE nation uk lost
their fourth in a row To the valls.

Speaker 5 (01:02:36):
To go two.

Speaker 9 (01:02:36):
And five what a difference a, month, Makes, Second swig
no matter, Who wins Cats and cards got a lot
of offseason work. To do first, OF all U of
l has got to get the quarterback. ROOM fixed i
think enough with the portal qbs. For now they got
to work ON the. O line they got to work,
on discipline cut down, on penalties get that kicking. Game
fixed WHAT does uk need, To, Do dick we asked.

(01:02:57):
This before to Beat the texas is the Tennis these Georgia's.
Even vandy what do they got to do to try
and get at least maybe one or two wins out
of that bunch?

Speaker 5 (01:03:07):
Next year bring in.

Speaker 1 (01:03:08):
Better players you mentioned the twenty, eighteen team and there
have been Other teams stoops has had that have won, you, know,
eight nine ten games. OR more i think it tends at.
The top but those teams all have something. In common
they all have guys who now are Playing. On sunday,
you know. TALENT matters i always say that that's why
we choose upsides in. The schoolyard talent matters do a

(01:03:30):
better job in the portal evaluating. And recruiting but the, Other,
thing jarry they got to retain what, they have, you
KNOW and i can Tell you i've already heard there
are a COUPLE of sec schools that are Coming To
Cutter Bully hard stoops has Said that bully maintains he will.
Be back but there's more Than just bowlie on. This
team you Got and stoops talked About. This monday got

(01:03:51):
to hang on to the guys. You have every Coach
in america is fighting. That battle he and his staff
are fighting it.

Speaker 5 (01:03:57):
Right now Amen. And Amen.

Speaker 9 (01:03:59):
Third, swig okay let's not Forget the COMMONWEALTHS third d
one team still in.

Speaker 5 (01:04:03):
The postseason Hunt.

Speaker 9 (01:04:05):
My hilltoppers They're already bowl eligible to eight. And THREE
played lsu really tough down There. Last saturday could have
even won. That game they lost thirteen. To ten spread
was twenty four and a half by. The way toppers
wrap up the regular Season the Heart Of Dixie. Jacksonville
State both WESTERN and jsu are six and One IN. Conference,
usa western oddly enough is a two and a half.
POINT favorite i say oddly Enough because jacksonville's got the

(01:04:26):
number one rushing offense again In THE. Conference usa, Get
This jacksonville state averages an o absurd two hundred and
fifty nine point four yards on. The ground toppers are
the fourth worst defending that and Last year western won
the regular season Game In, bowling green but a, week
later same two teams in the Championship Game. Jacksonville state in,

(01:04:47):
The game cocks won fifty two. To twelve they rushed
for three hundred and eighty six. Yards alone If the
toppers can play anything like they DID, at lsu they
might have.

Speaker 5 (01:04:54):
A chance what? Say?

Speaker 1 (01:04:56):
YOU yeah, i agree and you would Think that Western
can kentucky might be just down trodden after. That LOSS
but i don't know this team, At all but just
having covered this game for, a while, THIS sport i
think they're gonna take that and run. WITH it i
think they're gonna know they're gonna. Be angry we should
have won, that game not could, have won but should

(01:05:17):
have won. That GAME and i think that helps them
going into.

Speaker 4 (01:05:19):
This.

Speaker 1 (01:05:20):
Game, now unfortunately as you, Will Know jacksonville state in
terms of the, national persona not. The Conference jacksonville state is.
Sneaky good people don't really think. About them why, would
they but teams in the conference do because they can run.
The football and, you know the LAST time I watched
WKU and i can't recall which game, it was but

(01:05:40):
they didn't look good because they couldn't stop. The run
and if, you can't you're begging.

Speaker 9 (01:05:44):
For trouble Fourth, Swig okay rivalry. Week games we got
a bunch of. Good Ones noon Friday The Egg bowl
ole miss with the head coaches, wandering. Eyes distraction that
is some of the, worst time, most selfish Immature behavior
i've Ever. Seen dick but you, know What. That's kiffin
he never seems to be. Satisfied anywhere he goes three

(01:06:07):
POINT thirty abc Number four georgia at Number Sixteen georgia Tech.
In atlanta at, seven thirty YOU got Abc AGAIN texas
A and M at austin against Number. Seventeen texas and
to wrap that, one up you've Also got WELL on
nbc at seven thirty the, Same time NUMBER two Iu
at purdue The old oak buckin say The Old oaken.
Bucket game easy for me. To say saturday. High noon

(01:06:30):
we've already Talked about LOUISVILLE, and uk but you got
Number One ohio state at Number eighteen michigan also, at
noon Number thirteen Miami at pitt look Out for pitt
in that game, three thirty Number fourteen Vandy in knoxville
to take on that number Twenty Ugly. Orange school and
at three thirty, as well Number seven oregon on upset Alert.
At washington and of course You mentioned TRINITY at X

(01:06:53):
on friday at. Five o'clock that'll be of course on popper, Level,
road dick this is the kind of upscale hate we
only get once. A year so what outside Of The,
governor's cup which ones are you most?

Speaker 5 (01:07:06):
Interested, in well obviously.

Speaker 1 (01:07:07):
Miss And mississippi state because of what supposedly will happen.
After that i'm gonna double back. To That jeff pacarl
thinks That If oiow state loses Again to michigan for
the fifth trade Year And Jeffson ohio state, fan uh
that coach may get fired a year after and he
might win the national title. This, year YEAH but I
Think ohio state. Wins THAT when I think A and M,
THUMPS texas i. Really do indiana will Blow, Out purdue

(01:07:30):
pittsburgh Will. Upset miami, MY opinion I think oregon'll take Care.
Of washington My beloved shamrocks Will BEAT saint x unpopular,
Level row we'll have as many fans as. THEY will
I think Vandy, beach, TENNESSEE well i would love to. See,
THAT well i just Love what vandy. Did defensively you
hate to see, the RESULT but i was. SO impressed i,

(01:07:51):
should say but what they did Defensively against kentucky with
that those, BLITZ packages i think they do that to.
The Volunteers and georgia will Take of tech. Of course but,
You know i'm gonna push back a little Bit On.
LANE kiffin i cannot fully. Defend him but it's interesting, how,
fans media we all want to know, right now tell

(01:08:11):
me right now what, you're thinking what you're. Gonna do
hasn't he earned the right to do it on? His
terms maybe, you know it's, Just hard like, you said
it's hard to, defend him, You know but there are others, who,
say well, he's changed he's. Grown up, he's matured he's
Still laying. Kiffin. Right yeah my question is does he
owe to? His PLAYERS and i think the answer. Is

(01:08:32):
yes but if he says anything of stature or, if
yeah if he says anything that that is important to,
his players it's gonna. Leak out so you know that
that's tough, for coaches but you know it's the whole
scenario is so nuts with money and fans and all,
that now so it's never gonna get, any better.

Speaker 4 (01:08:54):
Is.

Speaker 5 (01:08:54):
It now there's certain.

Speaker 9 (01:08:57):
Other things you could probably do to say push, it
off but, you, know again and he's going to do
he wants. To do let's fitswig here SOME ginormous, nfl
games but we'll get to those in just. A, SECOND
first i want to hit some hoops because we got
him coming right, Up here Western and vandy In the
bahamas tomorrow at NOON on esp and of course tomorrow
night Seven O'clock tennessee tech coming in with a Well,

(01:09:19):
known Kentucky former kentucky player, coaching Tech Mister. John pelfrey
that'll be on the sec net, OF course wlap, as
WELL Noted, Nerd Magnet New jersey tech at, Number six
louisville nine o'clock tomorrow night At. Acc neck then it
gets real. For everybody katz host at Number Sixty. North
carolina then what three days later Number twelve Gonzaga. And

(01:09:40):
nashville The, Next wednesday louisville is at number, Twenty two
arkansas then at number TWENTY. Five, iu well actually That's.
An indy three, Days, later dick we're hearing over here
In the Ville That Big blue nation is extremely Upset
With mark pope these days AFTER the Ufl And michigan.
State LOSSES so i, ask you was that preseason win
over Number one perdue kind of like a basketball Placebo

(01:10:03):
For Big?

Speaker 1 (01:10:04):
BLUE nation i was just thinking about that the. Other,
night yeah, You know purdue did not have Everything, in
purdue do not have Other players purdue to not play
the way we, all knew and we said This that
purdue is going to Play. In march it's still ranked,
Number one but it also Showed what kentucky can do when,
it's healthy relatively, full strength not Entirely because jaq didn't

(01:10:26):
play in that, Game EITHER but i think it's all
going to come down. This season do they have a healthy?
Point guard just like, last year but maybe even more
pronounced because this team doesn't shoot. As well they could
cover some of those woes last Year With kobe brayan
knocking one down from twenty. Five feet kentucky doesn't have
that security blanket. This year sixth and.

Speaker 9 (01:10:49):
Final swig finally IN, the nfl which can't be happy
with just a gourmet repast of Matchups On. Thanksgiving, day
no they got to go but into college football and
high school Playoffs On black. Friday again why because, They're greedy. That's,
why hello they're. Into, Money, well thursday your Pack, At
detroit chiefs At, The cowboys cincinnati At, the ravens And

(01:11:11):
On Black friday Bears. At philly And, then sunday look
At these niners At the Browns and Chaduur starting texans At.
The colts colts are one of two teams haven't lost at,
Home yet bill's At, the Steelers maybe rogers, Is back
broncos At, the Commanders maybe daniels. Is Back and monday
night you got The gagging giants At. The patriots patriots

(01:11:32):
have such a patsy schedule PUN intended. I have i'll
put it to you Pack beating detroit yes? Or No
And shaduur sanders playing against, a real, real secondary Not
the Raiders.

Speaker 5 (01:11:44):
On, sunday yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:11:46):
He's gonna have a. ROUGH time I wish i could Pick,
my Packers but detroit's gonna be. Ticked off after losing,
last Week green bay looked better and Sacked, the vikings
sacked THE youngster jj McCarthy all. Day LONG but i
just think we're gonna have a hard time on a
short week Beating. He detroit they're playing in a short week.

Speaker 9 (01:12:06):
AS well i Love, the Lions but i've Got your
packers in. THIS game, i think, OH yeah I think GOP's.
In trouble he can't scramble and. They can't they haven't
been able to protect him. VERY well i Think the
packers are gonna win. THIS game i re could open
the Gate For.

Speaker 1 (01:12:18):
MICHAEL parsons I Think kansas City of dallas would. BE
fascinating I Think kansas city Wins that dallas's defense is.
No good but speaking, of Defense, the texans they will
Beat Up. Indiana jones when they Beat Up. Josh allen
they are becoming the team to watch them In. The
RAMS but i think that that they're going to Roll

(01:12:39):
into indy and ruin their. HOLIDAY week.

Speaker 5 (01:12:43):
I can agree with you on.

Speaker 9 (01:12:44):
THAT one i Love, the COLTS but i think that
they're probably gonna have their first home loss unless they
Can block.

Speaker 1 (01:12:50):
That's right he Is Our western, Bia Chief. Gary Moore
hot reeds on the way here on SIX Thirty wlap.

kittle we don't hear enough of him because he's On The.
West coast he is one of the greatest when it
comes to the gift. Of gab he's got such a
great career ahead of him. After Football But will compton

Speaker 5 (01:14:07):
Your combine oh, and uh let's.

Speaker 9 (01:14:09):
See here you had maybe one or two good Years.
At washington most of the time was. A backup most
of the time you're. Being cut what else you got?
For me kittle's got the edge on. This one i'm
AFRAID and i say good. WITH guy i would Say.

Speaker 5 (01:14:22):
Go iowa in.

Speaker 1 (01:14:22):
This game kittle is a tough three tight end IN
the nfl, right now And As van pelt pointed out,
as well if he go and he's, done this he's
flirted with, Pro wrestling he's got a future if he just.
So desires our second Hot Read. Jordan hudson oh, my
gosh now she's This is. Belichick's girlfriend now she's talking

(01:14:45):
About Suing, pablo torre who has probably spent too much
time on his podcast talking, About her but his partner
on the podcast Has said jordan, two words. Bring, it
yeah he wants her to because now you get Into
this discovery and all. This, stuff gary this. IS ridiculous
i think we are all wasting too much time on,
