Horse capital of the world, it's Horsetails with Ursul Ellis.
We'll talk about the horses, the people, and the history
of the thoroughbred industry.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
Harloway pulls away, Secretary of the West Side.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
Alas now live from Kentucky's Bluegrass region. Here's Purcell.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
And yes I'm still alive. This is Ursul exactly is here,
and John Nicholson is here with us some old friends,
and Reshie's over here.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
And but the cats are gone.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
All the cats are gone.
Speaker 1 (03:59):
Carrie Can had a.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
Bunch of cats out of course they were wild. Yeah,
but I you know the guy over here that comes
in in this office little offices we use here. Wedge
themself called them the cat daddy.
Speaker 4 (04:14):
Yeah yeah, yeah, Well there were a bunch of them.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
Oh yeah, tell them they're gone. Now do you have
a big inventory of cat food now you got to
get rid of But no, we've got one cat okay, yeah,
but I do have some of the old cat food
that she toured. Now she's about fifteen years old. I
guess this cat is you can't eat this cad I
(04:38):
was bringing it in here. Yeah, I thought they all
you all fed them when you were here and there
we did.
Speaker 5 (04:44):
Yeah, I brought a cat, you know, getting some of
that other cats.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
Yeah, it's over here now, No, I.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
Mean ours at home. One hundred thirty one dollars a whack.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
But you walk in here in the morning and day
they coming.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
Then they scattered, then they yeah congregate again.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
Oh really why about.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
Yeah? But that's fine. We always had cats in our
barn where they came from.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
Of course, we lost our wonderful dog about a year ago.
And now that we've got to show this cat, and
that's it, Freddy Freddy Freddy cat.
Speaker 6 (05:30):
Because she was the scarediest of them all.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
Really, we had gotten we were out of barn cats.
You know, after the year they get older and you know,
I don't know. So we said, okay, we got to
replace them. And we went to the shelter and I said,
I want four. You can't get one. You got and
you can't get two because one of them will get
(05:54):
hurt and if you get three, they're not going to
get along. So you always get four.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
Okay.
Speaker 7 (06:00):
They came out with a box and got followed that.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
Yeah, oh this is this is advanced.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
Yeah, I'm not to that level yet.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
So we got forecasts in a box and they said
they were related.
Speaker 7 (06:16):
To each other.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
Anyway. We took them home and we had them for years,
and she's the last one, you know, one at a time.
They got sick.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
When she disappeared on us after five or six years,
she just disappeared. We thought she was dead. Yeah, about
ten years later, she showed up really yeah on our
front porch back Ford. I just took a trip or something.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
I don't know, but she says, I forgive you, I'm back.
Speaker 4 (06:44):
Yeah, well I'll tell you we you know, speaking of
these these losses. Uh, we're sad at Old Friends. The
if she've been to Old Friends for any time in
the last forever, you've experienced little Silver Charm, who was
(07:08):
the wonderful little pony that was the spokes horse for
the for Old Friends and for Scott County tourism and
for everybody else. Michael Blowing's constant companion for at least
twenty five years before he even came to Kentucky and
has just been a part of the landscape and a
(07:29):
part of the family of Old Friends for ever since
it's been here. And so it was a very sad goodbye,
but it was you know, it was it was time.
And so we're sad for Michael, but I'll tell you
and sad for all of us. But what a great
story when you think about this little I believe Welsh pony,
(07:52):
but maybe Shetland pony.
Speaker 8 (07:55):
Big yeah, okay, yeah.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
Shetland's probably probably yeah, because I think this guy's ken
folk were in the in the coal mines in Scotland
and so so Wich Shetland. Yeah, that's probably right, that's right.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
And but this guy was on his.
Speaker 4 (08:12):
Way to the killpen with a goat, goat and a rooster,
and Michael blowing paid uh, I don't know, one hundred
dollars something like that, maybe less, and got him out
all of them, all of them, and found homes for
the rooster and the goat. And then and he and
Little Silver Charm were fast friends from that that point forward.
Speaker 2 (08:36):
And that was when he was in Boston.
Speaker 4 (08:39):
Yeah, and then you know, came to as we know,
Michael came to to Midway about a generation ago with
Diane and Little Silver Charm, and Little Silver Charm became
part of the landscape of Midway. Michael and Little Silver Charm. Well,
(08:59):
we didn't he didn't know that at the time. But
there was an ordnance in Midway against having livestock downtown
and uh, somebody, somebody was irritated about that and and
invoked the ordinance. And it was one of the great
political moments in the history of Midway. A great campaign
(09:20):
was unleashed, led by Michael and Penny Chennery uh to
save save the presence of Little Silver Charm. It was
a grassroots campaign leading to the city Council and he
triumphed in the end and was allowed allowed to stay.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
And it was a great you know, a great, great moment.
Speaker 4 (09:38):
And then when the farm came Dream Chase in Georgetown, uh,
Little Silver Charms front and center, and as late as
just this week he was entertaining tourists. Michael and Little
Silver Charm had a uh a routine. It was as
this routine was as fresh the last time they did
(10:02):
it is the first time where uh, Michael would say
that Little Silver Charm had one weakness and he couldn't
even say it out loud.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
He had to spell.
Speaker 4 (10:12):
It g I N G E R.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
S n A p S that's what he liked.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
And he said, I can't I gotta spell it. I
can't say it because he'll get he'll get all worked up.
And then he said it, and the little horse would
perk up, and then they go off in a gallop
to Michael's back porch. And then and go in would
go Little Silver Charm to get his ginger snaps. Michael
would point out that Walmart ginger snaps.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
Would not do.
Speaker 4 (10:42):
No, he would not that that simply wouldn't suit. It
had to be whole food gas that were the expensive ones.
Speaker 1 (10:52):
But that's how he lived to be thirty eight.
Speaker 4 (10:54):
But you know, think about here's here's Jackie, here's the
Here's the over arching lesson of all that is the
value of that horse.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
That was not recognized when he was in.
Speaker 4 (11:09):
The killpim But but this horse influenced a lot of
people and made because of his ability to win friends
for old friends, that horse made possible the wonderful retirement
and comfortable enjoyment and sanctuary for a lot of other horses.
(11:32):
And became the spokes horse not only of old friends,
but of after care, of the value of every horse.
Every horse has value, and by the way, became the
spokes the spokes horse for Scott County tourism.
Speaker 8 (11:48):
You know.
Speaker 4 (11:48):
So this this guy led a life of great achievement
and was just beloved by by everybody and a real
good icebreaker. You know, we've been around Thowbred horses a lot,
but to those people who haven't, they can be a
little scary and intimidating. And when you're introduced to Little
Silver Charm, that kind of breaks the ice a bit.
(12:12):
Diane gave Little Silver Charm his voice because he had
his own column and I think he kind of he
would write through Diane and tell the story of whatever was.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
On his mind at the time. You know, he.
Speaker 4 (12:29):
Lived literally in the shadow right next to the paddock
of silver Charm, and you could call him Little silver Charm,
but in his mind there was one silver Charm that
really mattered, and it was him. The other guy was
a pretender that silver charm. The big one was wod
(12:50):
Johnny come lately compared to Little Silver Charm had been
there a long damn time. And well, our hearts are
you know, our hearts heavy. But it's one of those
things that the story is just remarkable, and it's the
horse may not be with us, but his story and
(13:13):
his spirit's going to stay there forever. Yeah, you know,
he's he's on our Mount Rushmore.
Speaker 1 (13:20):
And now it's Dian's book still available? Are they going
to republish it? Absolutely, it's available and it's always yes. Yeah,
I didn't know if you had any left track. We've
got Bethy. It's got one.
Speaker 4 (13:34):
Of course, I don't know that the inventory, but we'll
always make sure that's it was a cute little book.
Speaker 1 (13:41):
Yeah, that's been several years. I don't remember, but you know,
of course Betsy got one.
Speaker 2 (13:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (13:48):
Well, the whole thing once again is it's it's just
reflective of what Michael has done and reminding us of
the value of these horses, even if they're not necessarily
making us money. Every horse has value, Every horse has
a purpose and Little Silver Charm was.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
A great, great symbol of that.
Speaker 4 (14:10):
And the symbol is going to live on at Old Friends,
and you know, we continue to celebrate these horses every day.
Speaker 1 (14:16):
I know.
Speaker 7 (14:17):
Some people just.
Speaker 1 (14:19):
Are very respectful of life, no matter no matter what.
Ursul sitting there, goes and walks around to the waterers
and if there's a a beetle or i'm off, sticks
his finger down in there and lifts them up so
(14:40):
they can go away.
Speaker 7 (14:42):
That's really Yeah.
Speaker 2 (14:44):
I wouldn't. I wouldn't. You're not softie, Ursul. I wouldn't.
I didn't know that. Hey, may time it would be
out there mowing and I'd go by one of the
waters and I look over and I'd stop.
Speaker 5 (14:54):
The damn tractor and get out and rescue, get out
and rescue something.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
I still I didn't know that.
Speaker 1 (15:03):
Yeah, some people are like that.
Speaker 2 (15:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (15:07):
Well the lesson what you just said is every life
that's value.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
Yeah, and you just have faith.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
Well the first time, how many years now we don't
have a horse. Yeah, yeah, the last one passed away. Yeah,
with the lucid passed away. With that all kinds of responsive.
Speaker 1 (15:31):
Did you see how many people it was on Facebook? Yeah?
It was on the Old Friends and you were telling me, God,
they got a lot of cards and two thousand hits
on Facebook. Isn't that something?
Speaker 4 (15:48):
It never ceases to amaze me in the sixteen months
now I've been with Old Friends. The depth of passion
that people have for horses that live there.
Speaker 1 (16:01):
Oh yeah, and wonderful.
Speaker 4 (16:04):
I guess I'm not surprised when you know, when we
have thousands of comments and remarks, you know on the
social media about Silver Charm or Big Brown or Lava
Man or somebody like that. But everybody that every one
of those horses at Old Friends, no matter what farm
that horse is at, has fans and has people, have
(16:27):
people who care deeply about them. And that's that's great too.
Speaker 1 (16:31):
I think it is a lot of people that like
to live in town, they can't have a horse, so
they're too well, they can't have a horse, and they
picked one right, and that's there. I mean, it just
is It's better than following some tart in Hollywood or something.
Speaker 7 (16:48):
It was great, but you know who.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
Who's is? And I know we called him Major, right.
I named him after my grandfather's horse. My grandfather was
a Civil War veteran, believe it or not. They died
of year I was born, and his horse was named Major.
And uh, that's the land. That's the first horse I
can remember seeing. My grandfather passed away and my parents
(17:19):
took in Major.
Speaker 4 (17:20):
Okay, after he after he got the wife.
Speaker 2 (17:22):
Yeah, so my dad my parents were horse rescuers also
before before it was the thing I couldn't I couldn't
stand the name who Who's do? You know? What? The hell?
Didn't mean anyway? And so I nicknamed him Major. That
was all. But that was all about.
Speaker 1 (17:42):
Well, see that's like Mandy Cook, my friend, she's got
she'll get some and they get riding, and they get
old and they get in and they just stay there. Yeah,
you know, she goes down, feeds them all. You know,
it's just amazing.
Speaker 2 (17:58):
Well, my grandfather rode that horse up until two months
when he died at night too.
Speaker 1 (18:05):
Is that the one that's on the postcard?
Speaker 9 (18:08):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (18:08):
Yeah, there was a mother car. It was a Civil
War vert was extremely well known. Yeah, and around in
this area they had postcards of him for.
Speaker 4 (18:19):
Sale, and that was like, it wasn't an event unless
he was there.
Speaker 2 (18:22):
If he was there, was this event.
Speaker 1 (18:24):
Can I tell the story about the parade?
Speaker 2 (18:28):
Yeah, go ahead.
Speaker 1 (18:29):
Every parade they had in Lexington. Colonel Dick I called
Richard Brett, they call him Colonel Dick, and he and
Major led the parade everyone downtown Lexington. And ma'am all
his daughter was standing there. My mother, Yeah, our Ursul's
mother was standing there in the heir of the parade
(18:50):
came and some lady shared somethody say, look here comes
Colonel Dick riding in it. Labor Day parade ain't never
worked at Dana Finn loved it. It's wonderful.
Speaker 2 (19:08):
Now.
Speaker 4 (19:08):
He was on the he was on the southern side
of that conflict.
Speaker 2 (19:12):
That yeah, in the in.
Speaker 4 (19:14):
The war, in the War of what the War of
Northern Aggression.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
He was on the gave a great rebel yeale. Let's
put it.
Speaker 4 (19:23):
That well, yeah, could he do the rebel yeal?
Speaker 2 (19:27):
Oh yeah, you would do the rebel yell?
Speaker 1 (19:32):
Yeah, that's fun. But he was well the picture that
it's he's by what was the old picture of Breckenridge,
the old statue of Breckon Ridge down at the courthouse. Yeah, yeah,
is that still there? No, they moved it anyway. There
(19:54):
was Colonel Dick next to that statue. Yeah, and John
Logan too. Yeah. Yeah, but that Colonel Dick ride up
and down the steps at the courthouse, and didn't he
go into the Brown the hotel or something a couple
of times on that horse.
Speaker 2 (20:15):
He would he would ride that horse into the lobby
of the Phoenix, Yeah hotels, and then was always going
up and down the courthouse steps, you know with Major
oh as the masts factor, the excellent hero Leader wrote
an article talking about that and said it was a masterful,
(20:38):
masterful display of horsemanship.
Speaker 1 (20:43):
So that's who Major was named after.
Speaker 4 (20:46):
Yeah, Well Major had good fan The current Major, the
more recent Major had a lot of fans evidently.
Speaker 1 (20:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (20:54):
And you know how nice of people to write he
was so pretty.
Speaker 1 (20:59):
Yeah, he was pretty up until the end. I mean
he he was a little low on his back, but
other than that, you couldn't tell you. He was twenty eight.
Speaker 2 (21:07):
For it was over the Sunday last Sunday. Yeah, and
he was of the hollering for his pen and for.
Speaker 6 (21:15):
Him it was funny.
Speaker 4 (21:19):
Well, one of you know, one of the blessings about
that is not is not lingering long declines. And that's
one of the things about Little Silver Charm. That is
a blessing that that he was up until the last
few days, he was entertaining people and loved his.
Speaker 2 (21:37):
Job every day.
Speaker 1 (21:39):
Love people. Yeah, we've had a couple of course that
we've had to put down. You know, they get so
skinny and then they get to where they can't move
because their feet hurt. Yeah, and they can't eat, and
you call the vent. It's real hard to decide what
(22:00):
point did.
Speaker 9 (22:00):
You do it?
Speaker 4 (22:01):
And they tell you that's it, that's it, or so
they'll tell you. And that was what was happening with
a Little Silver Charge. Yeah, just you know, just in
the last thirty six hours he you know, when they
don't eat, Yeah, you could look in their eyes.
Speaker 2 (22:17):
You can think that's it's time.
Speaker 1 (22:19):
Yeah, they're done. That's the way with the dog. He
was in a lot of pain, in a lot of pain.
Do something and you do it, and you he eats
them on out.
Speaker 4 (22:28):
And that's the last nice thing you can do.
Speaker 2 (22:31):
Yeah, that's nice thing.
Speaker 1 (22:33):
Well, I'll tell you a kind of funny one. We
had a mayor and she was a sweetheart. She was great,
and she had foundered and oh she was a mess.
And so we called that. He came over and he said, yeah,
it's it's a shame, you know, and we moaned about
it and stuff, and he put her down in front
(22:55):
of the barn and I covered her with us something and.
Speaker 2 (23:03):
Huh a blanket.
Speaker 1 (23:05):
Yeah, And he got in the car. This was uh,
Stuart Burns. And he drove down the driveway past the
house and turned, drove down the hill, drove up the
hill to the gate and she went like that and
(23:25):
see they sometimes they had that last something scared me.
I went from total horror to worse and I stood
there and jumped up and to come back.
Speaker 6 (23:38):
She's not dead, and.
Speaker 4 (23:40):
Of course she was dead, but you know it's just
well that would be on it is, Yeah, no doubt
about that.
Speaker 2 (23:49):
Let me catch up here, dear well, Curling two times
Horse of the Air was not only great on the tracks.
He's been a great iron a Southsires. He started going
on one hundred and forty stakes winners, now four Clips
Award winners, still going strong. He's also approven Suthsires. For instance.
(24:09):
There's good magic a champion two old in his first
two crops Saturday, winner of the Kentucky Derby, winner the
Belmont States. His stud Fear has already climbed up to
one hundred and twenty five thousand. There was a young
son of mighty curling standing at Clavern Farm with a
promising name. His name is Bright Future. Bright Future won
(24:30):
the coveted Grade one Jacket Clip Gold Club, followed that
with a score in the historic Savatoe a Mile, and
by the time they hung up his tax tack, he
had earned over nine hundred and forty seven thousand. Bright
Future is one of three stakes winners produced by Sophia's
song The Stakes winning Greatest States Place turned one hundred
(24:50):
and twenty two thousand. In fact, all three of her
folds to raise the graded States runners. Musical Mischief won
the Grade two Locust Gold States, a Grade one American
Oaks and earned over five hundred nineteen thousand, and then
there was a booth. He's eight hundred and ninety two
thousand three graded station. He's still competing. This is an
(25:12):
immediate family of Champion sprinter Housebuster, a Grade one winner,
Lutell a Fellow, and a host more Bright Future received
a full book of Quality Mayors this year. Thank you
breaders to inspect Bright Future and the other stallions at
Claven Farm called Jacob West eight five, nine, nine eighty seven,
two through three Oero. We think you're going to like
what you see, and take a look at the website,
(25:34):
which is Clavenfarm dot com. Close. Caven is over in
Bourbon County. Love Bourbon County. We're not a native of
Bourbon County, born in Fayette County. We're born on a
Russell cave. That's close enough, that's fuses enough. But you're
Lagen preceded you into Bourbon County.
Speaker 4 (25:55):
Yeah. I have been reading Arthur Hancock's book. That is
such a good such a good fuck. I don't at
a whole lot of levels, you know, the personal level,
but the historic level, the historic level for the Hankok
family and and and their pedigree and all and all that,
(26:16):
but also a reflection of the history of racing during
during several generations.
Speaker 2 (26:23):
You can tell them, have you read.
Speaker 1 (26:25):
The barn the book, the Claban Farm book.
Speaker 2 (26:29):
I don't think so.
Speaker 1 (26:30):
I'll bring it in for you, Okay, and they finish
this commercial.
Speaker 2 (26:36):
Okay, sorry, sorry, we're finished. With Claver now we're just
talking about it places down in Bourbon County. Yeah, claverand
was one of them, of course. And then there's us
who are not quite.
Speaker 1 (26:47):
As famous as they are, maybe infamous.
Speaker 2 (26:51):
Well, people know of us because of the pictures in
the post office. Other than that anyway, Uh, there are
a couple of names to remember if you're in the
horse business, and both of them down in Paris, Kentucky.
That's the clay Ward Agency and Indian Creek Farm. The
clay Ward Agency was founded back in nineteen thirty one
(27:12):
of Vinegeuer, mister James clay Ward. I founded it at
that time, and he was very successful even though he
was doing the depression. And he was his successful because
he gave great service and his knowledge of the horse business,
and those qualities are carried on as I speak. So
(27:32):
whatever your insurance needs, especially if it pertains to the
third bed, the professionals over the clay Ward Agency in
Paris are in a great position to give you the
best coverage at the best price of abled. All he
need to do is give Zach Parish Bruce Aswix the
call number over the eighty five, nine, nine, eight, seven,
eighteen sixty one and now he can stopped by the
(27:56):
office of eleven or two Main Street in Paris. And
Indian Creek, of course, they've raised and boarded and sold
many of the world's finest Therbis down through the years,
had great sales up in them and Sarah at Sarah
toogas thank you. They want to say thank you to
those who paid attention to the consignment up there. And
both the regular sale and the New York Werid sale
(28:17):
did extremely well. And i haven't looked at the catalog yet,
but I've got to go out and pick them up.
And I'm sure they've got a good consignment at at
Phase at Keenan coming up. So anyway, if you want
to get in touch with with Shack and just go
to the end the website which is indian Crete ky
(28:41):
dot com, indian Creek ky dot com. Two great organizations,
Claywart Agency and Indian Creek over in Boerburn County.
Speaker 3 (28:52):
Now back to the Thoroughbred Training Center and Ursa ellis
all right, Well, I'm sorry.
Speaker 1 (29:02):
Oh okay, So what's it gonna do. Is he gonna
get a little statue or where's he gonna bury him?
And he's gonna bury him.
Speaker 4 (29:10):
Little Silver Charm will have a place at the highest
honor of old friends in our main cemetery, next to
the welcome building and gift shop, very close to charismatic
and war emblem in Medina Spirit. You know that's right,
the last horse to beat citation, right, yeah, ye, and
(29:34):
all the number of famous horses there right in the
middle by the bench is where we'll we'll in tour
little Silver Charm, where he'll have the highest place of.
Speaker 2 (29:46):
Honor forever and ever, and all of.
Speaker 4 (29:47):
Our tour guides will tell the story of why in
the midst of.
Speaker 9 (29:52):
These all this royal turbot red blood we've.
Speaker 2 (29:55):
Got, we got Little Silver Charm.
Speaker 1 (29:57):
Well, he get a own with a pony on it.
Speaker 4 (30:02):
Good idea, yeah, yeah, good idea.
Speaker 1 (30:05):
Yeah, you can get somebody to carve a pony, a
fat pony like that. Yeah, great, Michael Fou.
Speaker 4 (30:14):
You know that's not you know, there's a lot a
lot of good ideas.
Speaker 1 (30:18):
You can always do.
Speaker 6 (30:20):
We don't have anything to.
Speaker 1 (30:21):
Mark the bunny's grave, but I got fencing and put.
Speaker 7 (30:27):
It around every where he's buried.
Speaker 1 (30:29):
And I've been looking and you can find a stone,
not like a human one, of course. I mean, but
now it's just little and they can put a picture
or something or another on that stone. Yeah, you can
put a little sipper cham on I have it sewing
(30:50):
well statue.
Speaker 4 (30:51):
We will do whatever Michael and I I think is
what they want to do. Yeah, but it'll be the highest,
you know, the highest honor. And you know as time
goes on, clearly there needs to be a statue of
Little Silver Charm and Big Silver Charm probably and Big Michael.
Speaker 1 (31:12):
So you know, Big throws remote Michael's house now.
Speaker 2 (31:19):
Watched TV there, that's right.
Speaker 4 (31:22):
There's a that's funny rest that you mentioned that one
of the great supporters of Old Friends over the years
has been Angie Dickinson, who you know, as most of
our listeners know, Michael came from the movie as a
movie critic, came from the movie business, and he's gorgeous.
Speaker 2 (31:40):
Oh yes, well, you got.
Speaker 4 (31:43):
To listen to Michael talk about what it was like
when she would come down his steps in the in
our little I should this is family TV, but in
her bathrobe, you know, coming down he and the legs
were as advertised, and so so she came down and Michael,
you know, Michael went out to do old friend's business
(32:05):
and he gets a phone call, you know, and he says, hello, Michael,
it's Angie.
Speaker 2 (32:09):
I'm here in your living room.
Speaker 4 (32:10):
Yeah, and he says, I hate to tell you this,
but there's a horse striking the living room and he goes, well, yeah,
and uh, he's that's that's Little Silver Charm. He likes
to come in and see the weather with Al Roker.
Speaker 1 (32:23):
Who knows what the weather's going to be.
Speaker 2 (32:28):
Yeah. He tells the time about Oh he called her
and it was her birthday or something like that, and
how did that go? Anyway, it was something she was
elderly and he he says, I forgot your birthday and
(32:50):
calling him, so I'm calling the lady. She says, well,
thank you, you know, but forgetting it, you know, and.
Speaker 4 (32:57):
I wish you had forgotten it. I think, yeah, uh,
but yeah, she loves Michael. And Diana's a lot of
a lot of those Hollywood people, a lot of the.
Speaker 1 (33:08):
You know, Michael used to just put a shank on
Little Silver Charm and they walked downtown midway. Yeah, you know,
it's just like somebody.
Speaker 7 (33:17):
Taking a big great Dane or something.
Speaker 1 (33:19):
Let's go.
Speaker 6 (33:20):
Yeah, that was that was nifty. It was really really.
Speaker 4 (33:25):
It's a sad day at old Friends, but it's a
sad day in Midway too. Yeah, it's part of Midways.
He was part of Midway's history.
Speaker 1 (33:31):
They ought to put a big you know how they're
putting Secretariat and Sunday Silence and all that up in Paris,
a mural that's still work charm on one of the buildings.
Speaker 2 (33:46):
That's a good idea.
Speaker 1 (33:47):
Yeah, I think I'd be a great I.
Speaker 2 (33:49):
Thought it was great that Arthur made the Hall of Fame,
you know.
Speaker 4 (33:52):
Yeah, that was that I had the privilege of being there,
and when he gave his very a pro dignified acceptance speech,
which was just it was emotional, no question, but it
was just right. And yeah, and uh, every everybody was
so happy.
Speaker 7 (34:12):
To I can't believe he's that old.
Speaker 1 (34:15):
I mean, you know, all of a sudden, you know
somebody for years and you look at them and they
say how old they are? And you where have I been?
You know what I mean?
Speaker 2 (34:25):
Mid eighties?
Speaker 1 (34:26):
Yeah, that just shocks mate. I mean, you know, I
remember people from a long time ago and then they
turned around and they got old on me. Top it.
Speaker 4 (34:38):
Well, he was in good form at Saratoga to he
was in. He was on top of his game, to
say the least.
Speaker 1 (34:46):
He's been in on the show a couple of times.
He came in with his son, Yeah, playing a guitar.
Speaker 2 (34:53):
So yeah, that was that was Arthur before.
Speaker 1 (34:59):
Yes, and he.
Speaker 2 (35:01):
Was playing not a guitar, he was playing a banjoe.
Speaker 1 (35:07):
I only remember.
Speaker 4 (35:08):
Part A great, great musician on top of everything else.
Speaker 2 (35:12):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it was counted.
Speaker 1 (35:16):
Yeah, when you get older.
Speaker 2 (35:18):
I've got her, I've got him. You know they always
say that, you know that he read the first uh
uh Kentucky Derby winner, you know from from there. But
Jed Pilot back in nineteen forty seven was was by
was bred by his grandfather. I'm pretty sure I bet
(35:41):
one hundred dollars to a Ham Sandwich on that.
Speaker 4 (35:44):
We got to get the research team on that. Yeah, exactly,
I was saying. Mister bull Hancock was always disappointed he
didn't have a Derby winner, did not have a Derby winner, right,
and then Arthur had two death yeah from from from
stone Farm, uh uh.
Speaker 2 (36:07):
And the third you know of course he he he
bred that uh the horses he called superman when what
was his name didn't turn out to be a very
good stud. But he was a one of Kentucky derby
and he had uh the horses he were and sold
to Europe and uh they went and got him when
(36:29):
he got older. They were afraid to get were gonna
send him to the killers, and they brought him back home. Yeah,
the gray horse.
Speaker 5 (36:35):
Yeah, I'm having him black on his names. See if
he didn't find Jackie the b you know, bred by Arthur Hancock,
Jeff Powlett, uh huh as his grandfather and Niger and Nidri.
Speaker 2 (36:52):
M okay, maybe it was a partnership thing.
Speaker 7 (36:54):
And yeah, how about that?
Speaker 4 (36:56):
So bull Bull's father was a little father right, yeah,
bread Chap Pillott.
Speaker 7 (37:01):
Okay at the bree Hancock number one.
Speaker 2 (37:04):
That was my first derby, first Turby I ever saw,
nineteen forty seven.
Speaker 1 (37:08):
Isn't that interesting that you came up with that because
people have always said, oh, Clayburg's never bred, you know
he had so so yeah, that's interesting stuff.
Speaker 2 (37:21):
He beat PHELANX and Faultless that day. Yeah, three horse photo.
Speaker 1 (37:25):
Eric Garry wrote him, how was the weather?
Speaker 2 (37:29):
It was? The track was money okay and it was
not raining. I went down with my parents and he
lit all the way. Eric Garry was on him, and
boy he was tired. Yah, fifty yards as you go,
I didn't think he was going to get there. And
there was a three horse photo finish. Really yeah, Faultless
(37:51):
became s horse was on the on the inside or
he went third on the outside. PHELANX was flying from
mister Quidney and it was a three horses photo finished.
But and he didn't Gary didn't touch him in the
last fifty yards. I know because I was sitting right there,
(38:11):
and but he was just waving the whip because you know,
hand riding, and he was tired. He was tired.
Speaker 5 (38:17):
He lived all the way, but he wanted you know,
why was fault was the favorite?
Speaker 2 (38:24):
I think FELANX was. FELANX was the favorite. Yeah, and
he of course FELANX went on one day going to Belmont, Okay,
but that was the only that was the last race
that uh jet pilot never wanted, really yeah, he never.
He were enforcing the Freakness and they didn't even try
(38:47):
him into Bellmont.
Speaker 1 (38:48):
Think, Okay, what's the name of the book I'm reading
what's his name? The newspaper writer? I got the horse
guy Dolls Guy. Yeah, you know what I'm talking about.
I don't think so. Well. Yeah, anyway, the first part
of his book is about all the characters in racing
(39:11):
that he knew and wrote about in the twenties, thirties
and forties. Right, I'm gonna bring that in for you.
Just to read the first chapter. He talks about everybody
around here, Idler what was his name, Colonel.
Speaker 2 (39:33):
Bradley, and the Madden's and all of that group.
Speaker 1 (39:36):
And they're not in there. They're too young.
Speaker 2 (39:39):
Maybe they were too young, but you no.
Speaker 1 (39:45):
But I'll bring that in there because you look at
it and go, why why I didn't know that. It's
one of those books. I'll bring you that in the
Kleburn book. You'll enjoy it. The second part of the
book that I'm talking about, it's just more of his
columns about people, and it's you know, I didn't has
(40:07):
some good stuff in there about horses, yes, but they
were spotting.
Speaker 2 (40:12):
He had asked the jockey, the famous jockey, the road
Man of War one time, and he had talked to him.
He rode him into Wilson Stakes and he had asked
him up in the thirties. You know, this was that
(40:34):
he was training that this jocky was it was the
best horse you ever road, and he said whole man
of war and he says it was no comparison. He says,
the best horse anybody ever rode. And then then he
went and got it.
Speaker 1 (40:47):
Duty that jockey same something like that. I can't remember.
But it's just fascinating to read that stuff because you
don't know where they came from, where they get that,
knew what and so on and so forth. So I'll
bring it in you'll like it.
Speaker 7 (41:06):
Gives you a lot of background in one chapter.
Speaker 4 (41:10):
Yeah, that's that's why I'm enjoying Arthur's book so much.
A lot of this is kind of common knowledge. But
but you know, there's so many times I didn't realize that,
or I guess I knew that and forgotten that.
Speaker 10 (41:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (41:25):
See, that's when when you read about well here Bradley
and people like that that were just super in their era, yes,
and you don't see all the you know, the stuff
that's all about them.
Speaker 4 (41:41):
Well, one of the things when you get discouraged about
racing and the issues that were you know, facing and
all all the stuff going on, well, it's nothing new
under the sun. You know, you go back to the
to the twenties, the tens, the twenties, read Jamie Nicholson's
book about Old or Old Old Rosebud and what racing
(42:04):
was going through during World War One and how it
had to come out of that right and and then
you know the time when Lexington didn't have a track,
and you know, so there there have been days and
we come through it. And Michael's wonderful about saying this too.
It's kind of and I'm paraphrasing, but basically that racings,
(42:24):
all horse racing is always going to be there, and
it's always going to be successful and fine, despite the
people who try to the problems, not the four legends. Yeah,
and despite ourselves racing racing has well has always been
there and always will.
Speaker 1 (42:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (42:41):
This book you.
Speaker 1 (42:42):
Learned stuff with how you're not looking for it. But
when he wrote about Colonel Wynn.
Speaker 2 (42:48):
He oh it's it's at Turchill.
Speaker 7 (42:51):
Well he rattled off.
Speaker 1 (42:53):
The list of wherever else Colonel Chin was and then
you see that's what was open at the time. Yeah,
see you pick up.
Speaker 2 (43:02):
I got to catch up.
Speaker 1 (43:03):
Okay, I'm so far.
Speaker 4 (43:04):
The more of these commercials gosh interrupted our conversations.
Speaker 2 (43:07):
Why no, Wow, I'll start billing you. That means I
guess we're gonna have to pay if we don't have
the commercial.
Speaker 1 (43:15):
Well.
Speaker 2 (43:16):
Last week at Charlestown, Mystic Lake phillip By Motown posted
an easy score and the two hundred and fifty thousand

(44:42):
You're going to like what you see. And for more
on the stallions over at ash for stuod call the
farm at eight five nine eight seven three seventy eighty

Speaker 1 (44:53):
Okay, I got to talk about Quillen and the guy's
name is Damon Runyon for crying out right. Yeah, but
you never can that's one of those names. I can't
ever remember that.
Speaker 2 (45:04):
I can't remember it, huh. I can't remember reading Damon
Runging at my grandmother's house.
Speaker 1 (45:10):
Okay, there you go.
Speaker 2 (45:11):
I told you guys, and dollars. Yeah, that's it out,
that's right.
Speaker 1 (45:16):
Okay, Well I'm going to say a few nice words
here about quill and Leather Attack, another fine establishment in Paris, Kentucky,
quality service leather goods since nineteen eighty two, the nation's
largest custom halter shop, twenty thousand halters a year ship worldwide.
Quillent q U I L l I N dot com
(45:39):
in Paris, ninety eighty seven O two one five. If
you haven't been downtown Paris, you need to drive on
down and go kind of slow. When you pass Lil's
and look over to the right and there's their new store.
Absolutely gorgeous that you've got.
Speaker 2 (45:56):
Them lost story why you don't pass lil You get
to Lil's later. You past them first, I know.
Speaker 1 (46:04):
But then you look across the street on your right,
and that's the Quillings.
Speaker 2 (46:11):
You drive down main Street and you look on your
right and there's Quilling. You go to the crossroads down
there and there's on the left there's Lives now but
block versus a six hundred block right, that's the way
it is.
Speaker 1 (46:25):
Maybe you just wait a minute, I thought Quilling was
in the seven hundred block.
Speaker 6 (46:31):
Huh.
Speaker 7 (46:31):
It little about six hundred blocks.
Speaker 2 (46:35):
Yeah, well maybe you just have to come and down
the other way.
Speaker 1 (46:39):
Yeah, that's it. That's it.
Speaker 2 (46:41):
Yeah, and it's a one way street and you've been
going the wrong damn way.
Speaker 7 (46:46):
That just leaves you get to drive backwards.
Speaker 2 (46:48):
That's it.
Speaker 1 (46:49):
Thank you. Somebody was praying speaking of backwards. Well, go
ahead anyway and look, you'll see it. It's a gorgeous store.
Speaker 2 (47:02):
You never could give anybody directions.
Speaker 7 (47:06):
Listen to that, the guy that's lost.
Speaker 1 (47:09):
Anyway, stop downtown and see the blankety blank store. Uh,
you'll find it. It's really nice if you won't just
have to bark with anybody about where you are. So anyway,
thank you, jeez, anyway, is everybody done? Yeah, you're trying
(47:40):
to say something nice about it. I was going to
say something nice about Quillings, But you can go in
look and you know whatever I say won't make any
difference anyway. But it's a beautiful store, beautiful stuff. All
this stuff's made out of English bridle leather, so you
can't go wrong. Like I said, it's the nation, it's
largest custom halter shop. You know, they get tons of
(48:04):
business when there's a big horse show until horse Park absolutely. Yeah,
there's people coming there from all next week at a
King of play and the oh yeah, you see, there's
all over the place that the sale.
Speaker 4 (48:19):
We had a TV group yesterday doing close up shots
the big brown happened, and that that quilla halter looked
so good and.
Speaker 2 (48:28):
It was shiny with the TV people who didn't know
anything about horses. Is this is perfect? Look out bright
as name is.
Speaker 1 (48:35):
Yeah, that's wonderful, good stuff. Twenty thousand halters a year.
So it's quillent e I L L N dot com

Speaker 4 (49:00):
That'll Yeah, that will solve all of all your problems.
Speaker 7 (49:04):
I can't believe that. I'm gonna have to run downtown.
See if you guys are.
Speaker 4 (49:09):
Right, the six hundred block to the six hundred block
is lills. Then the seven hundred block is is quilling.
Speaker 1 (49:16):
That's what they say, lils, and then you'll see quilling
and then yeah.
Speaker 2 (49:21):
The quillings that you pass quilling on the right and
then you pass meals on the left. So if you've
gotten the wills, you've gone too far. Yeah, you just
have to park and walk back, and that's exactly right.
Speaker 1 (49:38):
Have you ever heard of them.
Speaker 2 (49:40):
Such?
Speaker 1 (49:42):
Well? Anybody, Well, you can have a.
Speaker 2 (49:45):
Nice meal that at Lill's and then walk it off
by going over the quillings. You go, that's right? Do
it that? It wouldn't take much walking off about twenty yards. Yeah. Well,
the nation's leading side in the midst of the s

by Tabbitt from the immediate female family of Classic Quinto

Speaker 2 (51:45):
Becky James is coming in. Do you think so? Huh?
Speaker 1 (51:51):
Now? The cats are gone.
Speaker 7 (51:53):
We can't fund the cats.
Speaker 2 (51:55):
Out here at the training center.
Speaker 1 (51:57):
Yeah. Right behind you is the mouth of Right.
Speaker 4 (52:00):
Behind you, a mouse came out, and uh, I think
it's a great day for the for the mice.
Speaker 2 (52:06):
They're having a big time.
Speaker 1 (52:07):
They said, Yeah, they've been waiting for maybe they like
cat food.
Speaker 4 (52:12):
Yeah, they're brazen coming out here and having a party
and everything.
Speaker 1 (52:16):
Yeahs are good for them.
Speaker 2 (52:19):
Yeah, exactly, go on it.
Speaker 10 (52:22):
That was it.
Speaker 2 (52:23):
That was good.
Speaker 4 (52:24):
Ursul that into mischief the story there. Who does your
writing on that? Did Jackie you write that?
Speaker 1 (52:32):
Do you want to know?
Speaker 7 (52:33):
That was unlucky?
Speaker 1 (52:34):
I can type them.
Speaker 5 (52:36):
Write all my own commercial ah, okay, okay, and I
have been doing so for years.
Speaker 2 (52:42):
Okay, well that was Shakespearean.
Speaker 1 (52:44):
And it was. And we we proof them. I type
them on the computer. Okay, he proves them, and then
I correct my seven and twenty four mistakes and then
send them out. We send them, we email.
Speaker 2 (53:01):
I mean, everybody gets a copy of us well before the.
Speaker 4 (53:05):
It really honestly, it really is good because you know,
that's a way of finding out one of the big headlines.
Speaker 2 (53:11):
And racing this week.
Speaker 4 (53:12):
You can tell it through the grave, you know, the
stakes winners have viendomship won this week, that week, and
and next.
Speaker 2 (53:19):
Week it will be something else. Well, that's what you
have to do. I have to kind of. I go
through the National Race Resse every day from here to
tim Puerto Rico, well, Puerto Rico, Washington State, all over. Yeah,
(53:41):
up up at Emerald Down Floodstock Research Information Services. How
I do that. It's a great service, absolutely, my friend
James Scully, James James is that's an obstacle, I mean,
not an an example of the quality people that they've
(54:02):
got working at her.
Speaker 4 (54:03):
Yeah, and well that's where you get all the good
information and uh, it's a great organization.
Speaker 1 (54:10):
Yeah, they're really nice. When we got hacked, we had
to have our computer redone because whoever got into it
messed it up. So the girl that fixed it came
over to the house and orso has a password and
all that jazz to get on bris net, which i'd forgotten,
(54:32):
which of course I don't know. I don't. It makes
me crazy.
Speaker 2 (54:37):
I've got it written down now, though what is it?
He doesn't know?
Speaker 1 (54:43):
Anyway, we don't say it. Yeah, no, don't say it.
I was gonna say it, and no, well no, no,
but she called out there and made sure that they
got it, didn't She talked to them at bris Nett
and made sure everything was ready to go. And the
next day didn't they call you from risk.
Speaker 2 (55:05):
Everything? Okay, now, boy, that's you don't see that anymore?
I know, Yeah, you don't see that.
Speaker 1 (55:10):
That's right, great, amazing. They're nice people. Yeah, Okay, Hill
Parker our buddy. Help you know Hill?
Speaker 2 (55:19):
I do?
Speaker 1 (55:20):
Yeah, great guy. Everybody knows her. Great horseman and a
terrific real estate agent. He knows all the zoning and
all the rigs and all the state and local that's that,
and what's pending and what it and so he really
is a heck of a real estate agent. But the
(55:42):
big fun part about Hill is he's a horseman. He's
got a licensed horse trainer in eleven states, and that's
something anyway. He's got years of experience. He trains thoroughbreds
and steeple chase, you name it, he's done it.
Speaker 7 (56:02):
But what that means is if you're looking.
Speaker 1 (56:05):
Real estate wise for a farm for horses, like if
it's just a cattle farm or it's no one no
racehorse farm or something, he knows what to do.
Speaker 7 (56:18):
He knows how to fix it up.
Speaker 1 (56:20):
So when you do stable or breed or train or
ride or whatever you're going to do, he knows how
to fix it up so you won't get caught something
leading the mayor past the breeders, the TEASER's paddock or
something crazy. So give him a call. He's terrific.
Speaker 2 (56:43):
Yeah, well, let me tell you how to get in
touch with him. Well, the best way is to go
to his website. Yeah, lets horsefarms dot com. Let's horse
farms dot com. But there's a sale number. It's eight
five nine six eight zo three nine and it was
lovely Bride Riggan. They work together and they're great people.
(57:05):
I've known him for a number of years now. They
are the kind of people that will walk that extra
mile for you to help you out. So great people
recommend them highly. That's Hill Parker Lex horse Farms dot com. Alrighty,
we've got about thirty four minutes before we have to
(57:26):
do another air dream and we'll see if James comes in.
He usually calls in if he's not gone. Now he
was on vacation, wasn't he put his back right? I
don't know.
Speaker 7 (57:41):
We forget.
Speaker 2 (57:43):
We had we had to do the show from home
last week. Yeah, you know I listened and that they
had a good show. Well, yeah, it's great.
Speaker 1 (57:53):
We like it, and in particularly last year with all
that bad weather. Yeah, do it from home. But you
got your own studio there, you got no oh yeah,
we're very high tech. Yeah, I mean we got our
own coffee table.
Speaker 2 (58:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (58:13):
Well really, I mean Carton.
Speaker 2 (58:17):
I got the table I used to clock keep my
stuff on when I was clocking horses. Okay, oh yeah,
well well equipped all those fancy crab Well I can
tell you had a pretty high level security system to
ye to come in. It was I heard the door squeak,
and hey Michael, you know Michael's coming in.
Speaker 6 (58:38):
We did it when when.
Speaker 1 (58:40):
Boonie was alive and every you know, booney bark when
somebody came in.
Speaker 2 (58:46):
Yeah, yeah, we have to catch you one of these days.
You're close down to Georgetown, you can come. You know
where we lived, Yeah, I mean I lived right off
four sixty there. I mean yeah, yeah, I mean it's
just you're closer than Michael I am.
Speaker 1 (58:58):
Yeah, Carrick, Yeah, dumps into four sixty.
Speaker 2 (59:03):
That's exactly what it.
Speaker 1 (59:04):
Yeah, And like we said, right, there's Evans orchard. Yeah,
I just go into you know, a funk when they
closen for the winter. They go up through Thanksgiving.
Speaker 2 (59:20):
We live so close.
Speaker 4 (59:21):
I'll sneak over there for lunch there, rabbi sandwich or
something like that.
Speaker 2 (59:27):
It's really good.
Speaker 1 (59:28):
Yeah, they're in their fruit and stuff.
Speaker 2 (59:30):
The fruit. We were talking about their apple turnovers. Yeah,
so they make them with strawberries, strawberries and peaches and
they have.
Speaker 1 (59:42):
Peach ones strawberries head. Yeah, they're really good. We we
have well, Matt and Crystal, Howard and the kids. Boys
come over on Sunday, so I always make sure everybody's
got an apple turnover to oh boy end up with
it's worth it.
Speaker 2 (01:00:03):
Okay, Well maybe you might think about bringing some in
on Saturday morning.
Speaker 1 (01:00:08):
Well, I'll think about that. Sure, I'm just not leaving.
Speaker 2 (01:00:13):
Yeah, I did look right over the rest of this morning.
But you know, apple turnofs are good too.
Speaker 1 (01:00:24):
Well, stop by their legs Saturday. They when you drive in,
it's where the pumpkin patches are in. Those pumpkin leaves
look real sad. I guess they. I'm sure they irrigate themselves.
I'm sure they've got those big spray things because you
(01:00:44):
have to.
Speaker 4 (01:00:45):
Well, if their apple orchard those turns. God, that's oppressive. Oh,
I don't see how in the world they take care
of those.
Speaker 7 (01:00:53):
I don't either, But I'll come.
Speaker 1 (01:00:55):
I'll drive out one day and there'll be apples laying
on the ground. I come back and they're not on
the ground any Yeah, they must have some kind of
machines that pick all that stuff because they have to.
Speaker 2 (01:01:08):
They have to.
Speaker 1 (01:01:09):
You couldn't get enough people out there to pick them
all up.
Speaker 2 (01:01:13):
Yeah, they'd have to. And they got their wedding venue
now or that party venue or wedding venue. Oh is
that what that is? Yes? I know.
Speaker 1 (01:01:22):
They also the nicest people. Betsy loves.
Speaker 7 (01:01:29):
Sunflowers.
Speaker 1 (01:01:30):
And these people were walking out. That's they let me
park up by the door with Betsy because they know
Betsy has a wheelchair and I'm going to run in
and get something, so they let Betsy sit there. So
Betsy's people are walking by and they've all got bunches
of sunflowers. Betsy said, Mom, look some flowers. I said,
where did y'all get him? Betsy loves them.
Speaker 11 (01:01:53):
You have to get on a truck or like a
hay ride and go in the back and you pick
all you okay, and well Betsy can't is that wear
and wheelchair?
Speaker 7 (01:02:04):
So I running get the turnovers.
Speaker 1 (01:02:08):
I'll be right back. By the time I got back,
they've given her something. All nice people, Yes, just just wonderful. Yeah,
it's such a nice thing to do.
Speaker 4 (01:02:20):
So yeah, it's it's a it's a special place on
this side of it is sure is no question, no
question about that.
Speaker 1 (01:02:29):
Yeah. So that's he loves place.
Speaker 2 (01:02:33):
That's right.
Speaker 7 (01:02:33):
Tucky down and Tucky down, race to Betsy.
Speaker 4 (01:02:40):
Number eight comes, oh, number eight, Betsy, race right here
and here comes.
Speaker 2 (01:02:48):
Out talking about you. Right.
Speaker 7 (01:02:52):
So far everything's been fine.
Speaker 2 (01:02:55):
Let me do this commercial. You come over here and
get a don it all right? Well, In the Mischief
is Will on his way to topping the North American
Psylius for the seventh in a row. He signed the
winners of two grade one stakes last Saturday. His seven
tree is the best thrial in the country, and he's
approven Southsires. For instance, practical joke buying the Mischief studfees
(01:03:16):
climbed to one hundred thousand, and if you're looking for
a son of in the Missive to breede to take
a good look at. He was highly motivated at airdri
stud highly motivated at speed record breaking speed Sprinting six
and a half furlongs in the record breaking time at
Keenan one fourteen and four and two turns was no
problem instead of track at for a miland and eighth
(01:03:37):
and one forty six and two. And in addition to
being by the great in the missive, he also had
a strong black type family. You don't send ordinary marriage
in the missief in the highly motivated Damn whose stakes
went a strong incentive. Damn also weighs and means winning
the Grade one tests, the Grade two Gallon Bloom and
(01:03:57):
over seven hundred and thirty seven thousand and sure capacity
search capacity excuse me, search capacity winner of the Grade
one Matriarch Stakes Keenland's Valley Use Steaks and the Grade
three Lake George Steaks and over half a million by
one of the nation's all time great studs out of
amyera that's produced three graded stakes winners. Now that's a
(01:04:18):
recipe for success. Highly motivated fee is a very reasonable
seventy five hundred dollars for a life old. One other thing,
they actively support their stallings at aered restud and you're
welcome to visit aer restud to inspect highly motivated. He's
dropped dead gorgeous. It's called Shanta Nacao eight five nine
(01:04:39):
eighty seven, three seventy two seventy. Take a look at
a website edred stud dot com. All right, well, James
Gully just came in and James is with Bloodstock Research
Information Services. We were talking about too great services.
Speaker 12 (01:04:53):
Yes, yes, good morning, our souls could see Good morning
Jack here at the Yeah. If you're going to be
playing the rates this this week or in need any
thirdbred racing information, check out Britain at dot com. It's
your sources of handicap and information for sure. We got

Speaker 2 (01:05:13):

Speaker 9 (01:05:18):
We've got the.
Speaker 12 (01:05:19):
American Produce Records which has basically goes back more than
one hundred years with all the race.
Speaker 8 (01:05:25):
Records and produce records.
Speaker 2 (01:05:27):
Of the cover million third brids and.
Speaker 10 (01:05:31):
Much.
Speaker 8 (01:05:32):
And we have even more there at Britain at dot com.
Speaker 2 (01:05:34):
Go there.
Speaker 12 (01:05:35):
Like I said, check it out. It's a handicapper's edge.
Got some really good racing this Labor Day weekend, Big day.
Speaker 8 (01:05:42):
Today.
Speaker 12 (01:05:43):
Last Saturday, Sovereignty put on a show in the Traverse
was brilliant.
Speaker 2 (01:05:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (01:05:50):
Absolutely, I mean he's going to be the favorite, regardless
of what happens today or in the future. In the
Breeders' Cup Classic, you know, it's a matter shipping out
to Cow four and taking that track. But if he
runs his race, it's really tough to vision anybody beating
him as good as he's gotten, but we will have
(01:06:11):
We'll see some of his challengers in action to today
and tomorrow. Pacific Classic. The million dollar Pacific Classic is
a big race at the del Mar Meat every summer
and it's pretty.
Speaker 9 (01:06:23):
It's a dandy.
Speaker 12 (01:06:23):
This year we have got Fierceness shipping in to take
on journalism, that second best three year old out there,
and Nisos it's gonna make us first start at a
mile and a quarter. So we'll see if he can
get the distance, because he's pretty. He's a super talented
horse for Baffort. You know, if you don't get the distance,
(01:06:45):
we'll be going to the Dart mile. But I like
Nios's chances now. I respect fierceness and journalism.
Speaker 9 (01:06:53):
Fierceness.
Speaker 12 (01:06:54):
I think if he got out of the gate breaks
well from the rail and goes right to the front.
He's got a chance to leave to wire and if
he does that, that would be really good for the
Breeders Cup Classic because he'd be back and form. He's
coming off two consecutive losses. I just don't know if
he will be that sharp and journalism, I mean, it's
hard to knock him. He appears to be training great
(01:07:16):
at del Mar in preparation and it's just a It's
a dandy of a race. Also got the first got
to spin away today at Saratoga for two year old phillies.
Got a nice group in there. I like Tommy Joe
for Todd Putcher, but she's going up against Mythical and
a couple other nice Phillies. And then you're gonna have
(01:07:37):
the Hopeful, which is for colts on Monday, excuse me.
Speaker 9 (01:07:42):
And also today at.
Speaker 12 (01:07:43):
Sarah Tooga, got the Flower Bowl for her Phillies and
Mayors and a Grade three sprint. Del Mar's got a
ton of steaks as well as the Pacific Classic. It's
interested to see in the del Mar Mile, which is
a prep for the Breeders Cup Mile and the turf race.
Full Sarana full Serrano, who won the Breeders' Cup Dirt
(01:08:05):
Mile last year.
Speaker 8 (01:08:07):
He's coming back and making his first start of the year.
Now he's run on turf before and run well.
Speaker 12 (01:08:13):
On turf, but you know, he won the dirt mile
last year, so it's a it's an interesting comeback spot.
He's in there again, some good turf horses. We'll see
if he can get it done. And Kentucky Downs. Man,
We've got the first of two big weekends at Kentucky Downs,
highlighted today by the three point five million dollar in
(01:08:35):
Nashville Derby. It's the richest race in North America for
three year olds and I believe that's right richest turf
race for three year olds. And got a huge field
in there. Got a horse from Europe, the twelve horse Wildwood.
Speaker 2 (01:08:57):
Wildwood. Gosh, this is great Radio Wimbledon Hawkeye.
Speaker 12 (01:09:06):
Sorry he ran second though, Yeah he ran second to
field of goal. It look like the best miler in Europe.
And now he got he came out of his last
race of the injury. But that was a pretty He
was in great form earlier this year and this wibbled
and Hawkeye ran second him and then he ran second
two back to Elkodobas who came and won the Grade
one sword Dancer and his Breeders Cup Turf contender for
(01:09:28):
Appleby and Godolphin. So he's in that race, but you
got a whole bunch of other horses that were on
the Derby trail. Final Gambit Burnham Square tantastic, it's really
uh a hill road. And then he even got Tess
Score who won the Belmont Derby two back and just
a really good field man. I like Final Gambit. I
(01:09:53):
think he got a lot out of his last two
steak starts in the Belmont Derby and Saratoga Derby, and
he was finishing within and he got forced wade in
one of them, and then in the last one, I
just thought he was too far back and the horses
that beat him were more tactical. But I think stretching
out in distance off those two preps, he's going to
really move forward for Brad Cox, and I think he's
(01:10:14):
gonna be a terrific turf horse.
Speaker 9 (01:10:16):
Let me just say not this time.
Speaker 12 (01:10:18):
They had their opening Day tur Day there on Thursday,
and in the second race it was the first not
this times that ran there. This meat in a meet
and race and they ran one two and not this time.
Offspring swept both the PG Johnson and with anticipation on
turf at Saratoga, and I mean, he's just turning into
(01:10:39):
a great, great tursire. I think he's gonna could be
the best North American ursire. And he's real good with
dirt horses, So yeah, I like the final gambit. I
think he's going to run a big race for Brad Cox.
Also got the ter Sprint, which is a basically these
stakes at Kentucky down today. There were the purses of
the just the stakes races are ten point five million
(01:11:00):
dollars and then they're running the med and races for
one hundred and seventy grand and the allowance has started
at like one ninety. So they are just unbelievable amount
of money being offered and got big fields and the
ter Sprints of winning.
Speaker 2 (01:11:17):
You're in for the.
Speaker 9 (01:11:18):
Breeders cut terse Sprint. That race got Howard Wolowitz in there.
Speaker 12 (01:11:22):
He's the morning line favor, but he's in tough against
arrest me Red and some others.
Speaker 9 (01:11:26):
That's race nine.
Speaker 12 (01:11:27):
I like the one horse implementation for Saffy Joseph. He's
two for two at Kentucky Downs. Sappy Joseph won four
races last year and brought a bunch of horses, and
he did so again this year. And I saw an
interview with him. He loves that course and he wants
to win races there.
Speaker 2 (01:11:43):
So.
Speaker 12 (01:11:45):
I like that implementation off his last two starts. Other races,
ladies ter sprint. All these races are like two million
dollars or more.
Speaker 2 (01:11:53):
And then got the.
Speaker 12 (01:11:57):
I guess the Bowling Green invitationtionals just a million.
Speaker 1 (01:12:03):
Cracks me up.
Speaker 9 (01:12:05):
The Bowling Green get offered, it's insane.
Speaker 12 (01:12:09):
So they got they got some fantastic race in there today,
they got some more steaks tomorrow. They got ten steaks
being offered next weekend, six.
Speaker 9 (01:12:19):
On Saturday and four on Sunday.
Speaker 12 (01:12:21):
And I'll be down there next weekend, so unfortunately won't
be here, but you'd call us the hope. Yeah, I'll
try to call you at least text Recie.
Speaker 1 (01:12:30):
That cracks me up. It's the Bowling Green Invitational.
Speaker 9 (01:12:35):
Bowling Green Invitational.
Speaker 1 (01:12:37):
See that's like the Stamping Grounds Derby.
Speaker 12 (01:12:41):
Actually you're not going to believe it, but it is
the Mountain Dew Bowling Green Gold Up.
Speaker 9 (01:12:50):
Invitational.
Speaker 8 (01:12:51):
Yeah, listen, what race did.
Speaker 7 (01:12:54):
You say Betsy was in the second race. He's got
the secondary.
Speaker 9 (01:12:59):
Oh I don't have the pps. I just borrow all
those states with me.
Speaker 1 (01:13:03):
Second.
Speaker 12 (01:13:03):
I could look it up on my app. But no,
the second rates that's a mainen race, right, they got
a bunch of main rates.
Speaker 1 (01:13:11):
It's the mayor's name or whatever it is. It's just Betsy.
Speaker 12 (01:13:16):
And you know the that AI horse we talked about
that main race. He's in the hopeful on my day. Yeah,
so it'll be good to see he'll be a good
gauge for him because he was really that was unbelievable.
He was the longest shot in the in the field
that day and just the trip and the wind.
Speaker 6 (01:13:34):
What's an AI horse?
Speaker 8 (01:13:36):
That's his name a y e I y e or
e y a y e e y e a I.
But AI is artificial timid, you know.
Speaker 1 (01:13:50):
Intelligence, artificial intelligence, cattleman.
Speaker 9 (01:13:55):
Now I was looking at this. It's Betsy.
Speaker 12 (01:13:57):
Yeah, the eight horse and race two it's Eddie Kenneally
and Lesayas ten.
Speaker 9 (01:14:03):
To one on the morning line and it has uh.
Speaker 2 (01:14:07):
It ran once.
Speaker 8 (01:14:08):
This is the second start.
Speaker 12 (01:14:10):
It actually ran second at Horseshoe Indianapolis and a turf
Maten Special eight race, so and it was rally and
got beat a length and a half. So we got
a little bit of a chance. Those races are real deep,
you know, and there's horses from California and the Midwest
and the East Coast and they just come from all
(01:14:32):
over for those races.
Speaker 1 (01:14:33):
I got to ask you a question, whatever happened to Barnes.
Speaker 12 (01:14:39):
Barnes he ran last Saturday in the know, I didn't
when he ran like third or four Patch Adams one?
Speaker 2 (01:14:47):
Oh yeah, that was Patch Adams.
Speaker 12 (01:14:48):
He ran in that. He came back and ran in
now and Jerkins Memorial and Sartonta.
Speaker 2 (01:14:53):
Something in huh. I mentioned him in one about.
Speaker 9 (01:14:56):
Or Stafford had three in that field.
Speaker 8 (01:14:58):
He had Mannicut Road.
Speaker 2 (01:14:59):
Barnes.
Speaker 12 (01:15:00):
Barnes was the one that got bet the most, but
Patch Adams won that. He got up to be Cook Creek.
The last seven races last week, it's Saratoga. We're all
won by favor. It's like to pick five paid like two.
Pick six paid like two forty or fifty. It was
another reminder that I mean, listen, if you're going to
(01:15:20):
betting these races, I mean, everybody's most focused on the
stakes and everything. But cream Rise is more to the
top in graded stakes than listed steaks than they do
like inclaiming races and allowance and maiden.
Speaker 8 (01:15:35):
I mean, just that's the stats across the board. You
can look at the.
Speaker 12 (01:15:38):
Win percentage for favorites in all different levels, and it's
higher in the top races a lot of times because
class matters more in these stakes. I mean, look at Thorpeede,
and she hadn't been running those faster races last week,
and I tried to beat her, and I was on
door Vader, and she just couldn't get by her because
(01:15:59):
she dug in and Rana just had so much class.
Speaker 7 (01:16:03):
Exactly, Yeah, that's exactly.
Speaker 1 (01:16:05):
She finds a way to win already.
Speaker 8 (01:16:10):
Well, it's good to see you all.
Speaker 9 (01:16:11):
You all have a great weekend. Go cats.
Speaker 1 (01:16:13):
Oh yeah, whose cats?
Speaker 2 (01:16:15):
Whose carrier is it on TV? Today? Yeah?
Speaker 9 (01:16:21):
I don't know if you'll.
Speaker 1 (01:16:21):
Get in, say the Weather Channel. That's funny, the cats
are on. I thought last night that don huh.
Speaker 2 (01:16:31):
Both back there.
Speaker 1 (01:16:34):
Of course, Thank you, stay in touch.
Speaker 2 (01:16:38):
Thank you well. Curling, two times Hosts of the Year,
was not only great on the tracks, he's been a
great sire and also a sure shider. He started going
on one hundred and forty stakes winners, four Clips Award winners,
still going strong. He's also approven South Shires. For instance,
(01:16:58):
He's just our good Magic in two year old and
good Magic in his first two crops. Decided one of
the Kentucky Derby and one of the will On States.
He stood for his climbed to will earned one hundred
and twenty five thousand. There was a young son of
the mighty curlingstanding at Clayman with a promising name, Bright Future.
Bright Future, one of coveted Grade one Jockey Club Go Cup,
(01:17:21):
followed that with a score in the historic Savage Mile,
and by the time they hung up his tack he
had earned over nine hundred and forty seven thousand. Bright
Future is one of three stakes winners produced by Sophia
Som a stakes winner and a graded place mayor that
earned over one hundred and twenty two thousand. In fact,
all three of her threefold race are graded stakes winners.
(01:17:43):
His musical Mischief, one of the Greade two Locust Grove
stations placed in the Grade one American Oaks, earned over
five hundred nineteen thousand. Booth has won eight hundred ninety
two thousand, eight hundred and twenty five dollars three graded
states and he's still competing. This is the immediate female
family of champions, printer Housebuster, Grade one Win, a new Telefellow,
(01:18:04):
and a host of others. Bright Future received a full
book of Quality marriage this year. Thank you breeders to
inspect Bright Future and the other stands at Cleven Farm
called Jacob West at eight five nine ninety seven two
three three. Oh, we think you're going to like what
you see. And take a look at the website, which
is Clavenfarm dot com. And I'm going to talk about
(01:18:26):
my friends with Hope Well for I got to call
him over there at Hope Well. Oh.
Speaker 7 (01:18:32):
They're great people.
Speaker 1 (01:18:36):
We've been doing business with them for lord thirty or
forty years or something. Where's the time go. We checked
around when we moved to Bourbont County and everybody said
the same thing, Hope Well Insurance. It's Ted McClain. He's
a great guy, you know. It's just one of those
hometown things that you luck into sometime. So ursall had
(01:19:01):
to talk with Tim McClain and we've been with them
ever since. And believe me, we've been more than satisfied.
Speaker 2 (01:19:08):
Well.
Speaker 1 (01:19:09):
I think it's just real interesting how they've worked it.
It's an independent insurance agency. They're not tied to one
of those mega worldwide insurance companies that have a gazillion
customers or so, and you're just one of them. You're
(01:19:30):
not an individual, I'll tell you that. And you call
those kind of people and you have to press seven buttons.
But that's not the way it is. Hope Well is
an independent insurance agency. They don't work for a mega
insurance company.
Speaker 2 (01:19:48):
That work for you.
Speaker 1 (01:19:49):
So what they did was they poked around and found
the best coverage at the best prices for the most
financially down reputable companies. And that's they made a list.
Speaker 10 (01:20:04):
What do you do?
Speaker 1 (01:20:04):
You make a list? So they deal with these companies
over and over again. So what this means is they
will provide you with a no cost, no obligation review
in comparison of your insurance and that's how that works.
Speaker 2 (01:20:21):
That's great.
Speaker 1 (01:20:23):
So Hopeful company in Paris established in nineteen fifty five,
so they're going to be doing something right. Full service
insurance agency. Give them a call. It's a Paris number
nine eight seven two three four seven that's nine eighty

pass that on the right.
Speaker 1 (01:21:15):
Okay, all right, give them a call like I said,

office is eight twenty Main Street in Paris. They're really nice.
Now'll do a good job.

time to do something for my friends over at Darby Dan.
(01:26:41):
One of the three Grade one winners to stand in
the first season it stood over Darby Dan this year
is Blazing Sevens, the son of the popular Sara Good Magic,
who stood Feeders, climbed to one hundred and twenty five
thousand dollars after siring winners of the Kentucky Derby De
Bellemont Steaks. Blazing State Evans also won Grade one stakes.
(01:27:02):
Won a Grade one Champagne as a two year old,
and that's a race with the rich history of winners
that went on to become successful as stud the late
great uncle O Practical Joe the most successful son of
in the Minster for Sudn's cad Daddy. So I've justified
the only trip for grand winner to retire undefeated. They
come to mine right away. Blazing Sevens came within a

placed in the wh the Grade one Bluegrass States and
Sarahtoga's Grade one hopeful that was in his second start,
also a Saratoga where he won. His career debut was

It's all about the horse.
Speaker 3 (01:30:46):
Now back to the Thoroughbred Training Center and ursul ellis.
Speaker 2 (01:30:53):
Pardon good, oh, working on a horse? Well, we don't
want to interrupt. The veterinarian might be sewing.
Speaker 1 (01:31:05):
Something up more changing the attitude on a well, so
he's working on a fandas or whatever that might be.
Speaker 2 (01:31:15):
What a fane?
Speaker 1 (01:31:17):
Oh oh, okay, Oh.
Speaker 2 (01:31:18):
Working on a bandage? Okay? Telling him to get up
off his knees and get his butt on the radio.
Speaker 7 (01:31:26):
Well, I'll tell you what.
Speaker 1 (01:31:27):
I just feel real sorry for Michael losing little Silver
Charm after all these years. Gee is it's like losing
it right on, you know, it's just terrible.
Speaker 7 (01:31:41):
He loved that.
Speaker 2 (01:31:41):
Cony and even a bunch of good stakes. Today that
football game between Ohio Stadium and UH Texas, it's going
to be on ESPN at nude.
Speaker 1 (01:31:55):
Now they are you right?
Speaker 7 (01:31:57):
Because Kentucky huh, cec, I'm not sure where I saw
that on ESPN and Fox? Can you see where.
Speaker 2 (01:32:08):
Ohio State is? Can you tell what first sight?
Speaker 7 (01:32:11):
Because it drove me nuts last time.
Speaker 6 (01:32:13):
I finally just quit looking her.
Speaker 2 (01:32:16):
Son that we had some rilling its over for dinner
the other night and they weren't too high on Kentucky's
changes this year. What do you think, Bessie, I'm positive? Huh,
I'm positive about it.
Speaker 7 (01:32:31):
It's positive positive.
Speaker 2 (01:32:33):
You're positive about it. Yeah, they got a bunch of
guys that are going to be brand of watch fails, egos,
just brand play a game. And when does that game
come on? And it's only twelve forty twelve forty.
Speaker 1 (01:32:46):
That's Kentucky and Ohio State is it's twelve o'clock.
Speaker 2 (01:32:50):
Yeah, twelve o'clock.
Speaker 1 (01:32:53):
Whatever that means.
Speaker 2 (01:32:55):
That's the number one. Texas is right number one. I
think Ohio State's right number three. Yeah, that should be
a good class.
Speaker 1 (01:33:03):
Well, they're getting a lot of whatever you hype or
whatever you call it about that game.
Speaker 2 (01:33:09):
Well, James talked about the Pacific Classic. That's a big one.
Today's they went. I don't think he mentioned the spin away.
Speaker 7 (01:33:17):
I don't think he did either.
Speaker 2 (01:33:19):
I've looked up a couple of winners Twilight Tier going
to spin Away.
Speaker 1 (01:33:24):
When do you remember? Is that very old?
Speaker 2 (01:33:27):
About nineteen thirty one? I think she wanted Wow, she
was a two year old shoes. It's a pretty name,
but it's Twilight Tier, not Twilight Tier.
Speaker 1 (01:33:37):
Yeah, I wonder why. I mean, won'der whether got it
is very pretty?
Speaker 2 (01:33:41):
Oh well, no, I wasn't Twilight Tier. It was I
forgot the name of that Philly, but I mean, i've
got it over here. Top flight.
Speaker 6 (01:33:51):
Oh okay, yeah she was.
Speaker 2 (01:33:53):
She was undefeated at two beaten colts and she was
never beaten by Philly shoes. She went against some colts.
Good But anyway, she was my horse named this this
DOUNK the IC d O NC and FA who he
was an important time. But I'm pretty sure that he
(01:34:16):
was a full of nineteen eighteen. But I'm pretty sure
that he stood over form the at Clayburne Farm at
that time. Is that right? Yeah? And when? But anyway,
it was a pretty good kind of a stirdod. Well,
he's had a great Philly in the top flight. She
had she was undefeated, and uh she went seven for
seven as a two year old. That's what you call undefeated,
(01:34:39):
isn't it?
Speaker 1 (01:34:40):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (01:34:40):
What think? Then she beat Colts. Let's she when she
beat 'em? U, she will we tell her she's going
in the s s. She wanted to spin away, of course,
she won the Matron. She wanted the Fortuity, beating Colts
at the Bellmont, and then she went to the Peminical
Fortuity and one night so she w was uh seven
(01:35:01):
for seven as a two year owl, and then she
uh lost her first race. They put her in the
Wood Memorial against the Boys in her first start, and
to make him at three. She went fourth. Then she
reeled off and she won two three more wins the
Arlington Oak To Coaching Club, American Oaks and the Acorn.
(01:35:24):
That's about as good as the kids. And then they
put her in the in the Alabama. She got she
won that cause she got beat in the Classic by
Coats and they put her see finally this is in
the Delaware Handicap Flankstone and yeah this that was Coats
(01:35:44):
in there too. And then her last start to Potomac,
she went fourth against uh the boys, but uh lifetime.
She won twelve or sixteen stars. She was never beaten
by I remember of her own sex as a matter
of fact. And finally I'm mistaken. She wasn't a bad
(01:36:07):
as well. She never started any thing, is I mean,
threw anything as good as herself. But she was the
dam of a horse named flight Command that won the
United the United States Hotel Stakes. And she was the
dam of a cold named sky Raider by man of War.
Now remember him, they put him in the study. Never
did anything, but there he was. Anyway, She was the
(01:36:31):
dam of Grand Dame of snow White and won the
National Stay in States run second in the Alabama. So
she did very good. As a matter of fact, been
some real good winners of the of the of the
Spinnaway Stakes, Tanya won in nineteen o four. Tanya won
(01:36:53):
the Belmont Stakes in Prudery, Chicata nineteen sixty one, a
champion two Ofully Marcusson from over Spend Triff uh uh
Cleaveland Park numbered a count another champion, oh the great Ruffians.
She also wanted also it's that right, yeah, wow, So
(01:37:18):
it's it was a It was a really good pedigree
as far as it goes top flight by and let's
see what else I was gonna talk about for time?
Is it.
Speaker 7 (01:37:33):
Nine thirty seven?
Speaker 2 (01:37:35):
Nine thirty seven? It's time to do is spendthrift and
a Sally, So we'll take care of them.
Speaker 1 (01:37:42):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (01:37:44):
Then maybe we'll get docked and by that time it
s we shall see. Uh, let me get to all
this stuff. Uh in the way here? What am I
looking for? Spinthrift? Well, I know I've got it here somewhere.
(01:38:08):
It went over right over here. Oh yeah, okay, if
you got it, thank you, Messie that sua as well.
Keep you around.
Speaker 7 (01:38:18):
Somebody has to done out what's going on?
Speaker 2 (01:38:20):
And Sally van service you are, Jackie. Yeah. The nation's
leading sire in the Minchia is the South of the
nation's leading three year old. That would be seventh tree
win the last Thursday, the Grade one two hundred and
fifty thousand dollars Trappers one by ten. That same day
at Saratoga, the Grade one five hundred thousand h Island
(01:38:42):
Jerkin States was one by Patch Adams, another three year
old by in the Missia through last weekend in the
MINSIAV Inside in twenty twenty five, sixteen States winners. The
eleven of them Graded States one, three Grade one States winners,
fifty one black type runners, and he extended his lead
over the nation second run sire to some eight million dollars.
(01:39:02):
Looks like he's goes shoe in to be the uh
nations leading sire. That'd be seven times in a row
that he had done that anyway. Uh So, the nation's
leading sire stands at at Spencrifte Farm sodals upon the
(01:39:24):
nations leading second crop sire Omaha Beach and the relations
leading third crop sire. And let's see, I think the
nations number one freshman so also stands that term Omaha
Beach and the third crop. So last week we talked
(01:39:46):
about future leading sires, the Arabian Line and cyber Knife
and Dornic and forty over at spend Trip. Here's a
couple more of them to think about. Greatest Honor, he's
the regularly very greatest seas tap it from the immediate
female family, the classic Quinner rags to Richard, the classic
Quinner Dazzle, the brew Berathy, You're better than Honor, and
(01:40:09):
a host of others. Horseman came to see him, loved him.
Coat three hundred and twelve marriage. His first two seasons
has stood looked for his first cop euildings at the
sales and Jackie's Warrior. He is a clips forward winner,
sprinter Grade one winner two three and four of nine
graded steaks four Grade one over two million, nine hundred
(01:40:29):
and fifty nine thousand dollars his first cop are like
the greatest honors earlings this year, So take a look
at him. Called des A Brown and Mark or Daniel
at eighty five nine two nine four years old thirty.
In the website, he's spencerfarm dot Com. Jackie, I think
it's oh.
Speaker 1 (01:40:47):
I get to talk to about Sally Van. Sally Van's
the best, isn't it. Sally Horse Vans has been in
business for a long time. I used to try to
put how many years, like thirty or forty or fifty,
and I'd scratched them out, and I scratched them out
(01:41:07):
all and I just put they've been in business for
a long time, and during that time many of the
greatest runners ever to step on a racetrack have been
entrusted to their care. For instance, what always comes to
mind is I saw video where Justify was unloading off
of a Sally Van going to somewhere wonderful and they've
(01:41:34):
just earned their reputation because they've learned a lot along
the way. And it's so obvious course just looking at them.
Their vehicles and equipment are in tiptop shape. But the
single most important safety factor is the ability and experience
of the person behind the wheel. They're really proud of
(01:41:57):
their drivers at Sally Horse Vans. Their experienced drivers experienced horsemen,
and that's a winning combination. So think about that the
next time you ship your horse across the county of
the state of the United States. You can depend on
the fact that the person behind the wheels one of
(01:42:17):
the best in the business. Folks at Sally Horse Vans
wouldn't have it any other way, and that's why for
more than half a century Sally Horse Vans two five
nine four oh six, it's two five five nine four
oh six the safest way to the winner circle.
Speaker 3 (01:42:40):
Now back to the Thoroughbred Training Center and ursu ellis.
Speaker 2 (01:42:47):
Well, let's see here. Oh you know what I mean,
get out one horse. I'm gonna you're gonna have wait
on me. Now, I want to I want to read
shopping from Joe Palmer.
Speaker 1 (01:43:00):
Good what we got him, We got him.
Speaker 2 (01:43:03):
You got him to day?
Speaker 1 (01:43:08):
How are you doing, Doc.
Speaker 5 (01:43:10):
Good?
Speaker 10 (01:43:11):
I wanted to hear what you had about Joe Palmer.
I was excited.
Speaker 2 (01:43:14):
Didn't get your knees solden?
Speaker 10 (01:43:17):
Now I stayed cleaning. Luckily I had.
Speaker 13 (01:43:19):
I was putting the bandage on a horse, so sorry,
I couldn't make it at the first call today.
Speaker 2 (01:43:25):
What were you doing putting a brand bandage on something?
Speaker 10 (01:43:30):
Well, he came up as hot.
Speaker 13 (01:43:32):
I was first sent home today. Of course it came
up foot for so I had to put a Bandageohn Spiel, Okay.
Speaker 2 (01:43:41):
All right, Well what else? What's going on down there?
Besides down there praying?
Speaker 10 (01:43:47):
Well?
Speaker 13 (01:43:48):
We had the United States Secretary of Agriculture came here
on Thursday and I had a big cost pounding thing.
Speaker 14 (01:43:57):
And I guess sounds like they're going to start trying
to really work and having your veterinarians and areas that
don't have veterinarians, like Mississippi.
Speaker 10 (01:44:08):
If you kind of lay on the map, you know
where veterinarians are.
Speaker 13 (01:44:12):
There's a lot of this state, especially to the west,
it really doesn't have any veterinary care. And it's not
unusual here to somebody, will you know, can your vet
at home do whatever? You know, when we send it home,
they say, look, I said one on this week they say,
we don't even have a local vet, you know, especially
they do large animals. So it sounds like they're going
(01:44:32):
to try to keep working at getting folks out to
areas that need it. And here in the in the
school of the State of Mississippi now will take two
veterinary students, and we have a veterinary technician school here also,
and they'll pay, you know, they'll pay their way through
school if.
Speaker 10 (01:44:50):
They agree to go back to these areas in need veterinarians.
I think it's four years.
Speaker 2 (01:44:56):
They have to agree that.
Speaker 14 (01:44:57):
They'll go back and work there at least four years.
But you know, the nice thing is I ain't both
people both vet students this year. You know, where they're
from really needs veterinary care. So you know, it's good
for the good for the student, and hopefully good for
that community, you know, to try to get people to
go there is the need veterinarian.
Speaker 10 (01:45:16):
So that was that was big this week. And uh
and I had the one My topic this week was
going to be on sarcoids.
Speaker 13 (01:45:25):
And hopefully it's something not.
Speaker 10 (01:45:26):
Everybody's had to deal with.
Speaker 13 (01:45:28):
But their skin tremors that horses get, and they're caused
by a virus, a cattle virus that causes warts. It's
a mobile papeloma virus, which paploma just means war. But
the weird thing is that virus is that's the virus
in cattle that actually causes warts in cattle. It's it's
a virus that causes warts, but not in cattle, even
(01:45:49):
on country cattle, and it can cause these masses under
the skin, and it might just be and everybody's kind
of seeing it's a horse just kind of like those
circular areas on a horse. You just never get hair
that maybe a little bit crusty, or horses trying to
bump under the skin that never really changes. Those we
call occult sarcoids easily don't cause any problem, but they
(01:46:12):
can look like anything from a wart to crime flesh
to kind of in between that, and they can get
really big and really aggressive and be really nasty alternated tumors.
So we have a little miniature donkey in here, and
probably if you took that sarcoid.
Speaker 10 (01:46:30):
Off, I've been weigh two pounds.
Speaker 13 (01:46:32):
And it's trying to write on his biscuit area, go
over to his trying to right.
Speaker 10 (01:46:37):
Fore leg and we've got to buy up.
Speaker 13 (01:46:39):
See in just to make sure. But you know it's
it's gonna come back sarcoid. And the frustrating thing about
them is there's not a lot of great options for
these things. It shouldn't to do better. If they're around
the aisle, we say those we.
Speaker 10 (01:46:53):
Can kind of treat a little better. But what we're
gonna do with this one.
Speaker 13 (01:46:57):
It's been described, is to cut some of that tumbor
off and then put it in liquid nitrogen because your
liquiditche is way way cold, and we're gonna and the
reason you do that is the liquid nitrogen kills that virus,
that papell oma virus, and then you reimplant that tissue.
Speaker 10 (01:47:18):
You got to keep it.
Speaker 13 (01:47:19):
Liquiditig in for ten minutes kill the virus. Then you
reimplant some of that tissue and on. So it's like
a vaccine. And it's a technique I've never used. But
doctor o'she and who come up and did the show
that time when I was and that surgery she's done
in the times that had pretty good success.
Speaker 10 (01:47:35):
And what they've written up about it.
Speaker 13 (01:47:37):
You know, it has I think over three quarters of
the clients at least. We're happy with the outcome. So
we're going to try to shrink it because you know,
there's there's no skin to take off because the skin,
the mass is in the dumbers, which is a deep
part of the skin. So it's not like you can
open him up, go in there and show it out.
(01:47:57):
I got to do surgery. We've got to take over
the all and it would be you know, as big
as almost two dinner plates, probably take off of him.
So we can't do that, but we're gonna try. And
it's not bothering him, but we're gonna try.
Speaker 10 (01:48:11):
To do something to help him get rid of it.
Speaker 2 (01:48:16):
Alright, I thought you were coming down here pretty soon.
Speaker 1 (01:48:22):
For like to my weeks.
Speaker 10 (01:48:24):
We will be there, not maybe that will not this
time of.
Speaker 13 (01:48:29):
Weekend, but the next.
Speaker 10 (01:48:30):
Weekend, I guess we'll be there.
Speaker 2 (01:48:33):
Oh the.
Speaker 10 (01:48:35):
Friday.
Speaker 13 (01:48:36):
And I'm so excited I can't stand it.
Speaker 6 (01:48:39):
Okay, did you hear about little Silver Charm?
Speaker 2 (01:48:44):
I did.
Speaker 13 (01:48:47):
All the way yesterday and maybe it bothered me the
whole day long.
Speaker 1 (01:48:52):
Yeah, that's a shame.
Speaker 7 (01:48:54):
Well, God knows he had along good life he did.
Speaker 14 (01:48:59):
We figured he was at least thirty five, so you
know he had have made it was a little celebrity.
And you know the life he had was way different
the life he could have had, you know, from from
it off from the slider truck. So you know, looking
back at the life he had, you know, it's it's
(01:49:21):
the little horse. Ye know, who doesn't how many people
that touched that horse and you know got to see.
Speaker 10 (01:49:28):
Him through all the years of his old friend.
Speaker 2 (01:49:32):
But you know, we lost up. We're out of horses now.
Speaker 13 (01:49:36):
I don't know, now you've lost the other one.
Speaker 2 (01:49:39):
Yeah, he Jackie went out to out to see him
last Sunday and uh just fine, you know, came over.
We wanted his pepper mention and everything like that. And
then they they say he died of a heart attack.
Speaker 13 (01:49:58):
They just you know, yeah, well, you know that's such
a blessing really, you know, because you know we have
horses that I have thirty three year.
Speaker 10 (01:50:07):
Old come through this week that had a another type.
Speaker 13 (01:50:11):
Of cancer, uh in his mouth and you know he's
just talking to the owner and you know, and she was,
I hope I find him. Just been the past and
it's a hopefully so. And like I was talked to
Michael about Little Silver Charm and says like it was,
especially with old friends too. You know, the horse most
(01:50:33):
of the time unfortunately makes us choose, you know, but
it's just a busting when they do it on their own,
you know, peacefully like that it does. It's never an
easy decision, even though you do, you know, you do
what's right for the horse.
Speaker 10 (01:50:47):
But it's not reasoning.
Speaker 2 (01:50:50):
Yeah, well this is the first time. And got I'm
trying to think when I got my first horse, and
we're back in nineteen what no, I in nineteen twenty
six or something like that.
Speaker 13 (01:51:09):
Well, don't say that. You'll come home and two will
be tied to your mailbox.
Speaker 2 (01:51:14):
Anyway, he will be out horses for the first time.
Speaker 13 (01:51:19):
All right, Well see what you got on your mailboxing?
How only there might be one there.
Speaker 2 (01:51:26):
I don't want anymore. Now you gon do it? All right?
Speaker 13 (01:51:29):
Up here as far as well, Oh I got when
I'm up there, I got to go through him. I
think if all you a sitre walking video of him
and when he looks by, if I can't wait to
see him.
Speaker 2 (01:51:40):
Oh that's great, Okay, Oh, thank you? Cool?
Speaker 13 (01:51:46):
All right, well, I will pard you next week and
see you the following week. You can't wait?
Speaker 2 (01:51:52):
Great? All right, I have a good day.
Speaker 13 (01:51:55):
Go to you eating box time.
Speaker 2 (01:51:59):
Well, let's see, I've I got time? How much time
have I gotten? Four minutes? Hell, Henry does in four minutes?
Hurry up, it's very sure. This is written by Joe Popper.
The surest way to write a successful magazine is to
write about men and women. For some reason which evades me,
(01:52:22):
they do not seem to know much about one another,
and prudery forbids an obvious suggestion failing is a man
may always make the front pages with an article on
the relative intelligence of animals, I mean other animals, and
most of these the horse comes off badly, and it
comes to be an article of faith with some of
(01:52:43):
our sports writers that he is a deficient and intelligence
as compared to other domesticated are semi domesticated animals. A
horse cannot pile up boxes on a platform so he
can get at a banana on the ceiling, because he
has no hands with which to pick up a box,
and he does like bananas anyway. He cannot very easily
(01:53:07):
be taught to sit on his hindquarters and beg because
he cannot be easily supported in this position as a
dog can be, and because it's a damned undignified position,
either for a horse or a political candidate that horses
realize and political candidates don't. That doesn't mean the horse
isn't smart, as will be freely granted by anyone who
(01:53:29):
has watched their liposons perform in Madison Square Garden, flowing
through intricate maneuvers under what amounts to invisible guidance. A
favorite story in this corner cook it Herns, a horse
you probably don't remember. His name was Sands of Pleasure
and he was the first good horse to come from
the fair Play Rock Sand Cross, which has later made
(01:53:52):
famous by Man of War and others. Sands of Pleasure
was a stakes winner in his early days, but as
time went on, dropped down a little and wound up
running in claiming races. But like so many of the
horses with a turbuling blood of fairplay, he had his notions.
He was beating the nose on the post one day,
this was before the days of the finished camera, when
(01:54:14):
the judges put the numbers up immediately and hoped they
were ripe. The jockey on Sands of Pleasure came back,
saw his number on the second slot, and pulled up
to unsaddle. The horse tied diligently to throw him, and
afterwards tried to wrestle down the groom who was holding him,
and to kick several innocent bystanders. The trainer was disturbed
(01:54:36):
because the fair places were prone to grow moody and
intractable as they grew older, which usually meant the end
of the racing usefulness. So he tossed the horse into
a race in which he didn't fit a few days later,
just to see the Sands of Pleasure beaten some five legs.
Came back blowing a little bit because he's giving it
a good try, but otherwise unruffled, well off. There's a
(01:54:58):
secret to training horses is to understand how a horse thinks.
His trainer went to put two and two together. Next
time he started the horse, he gave his jockey some
unusual instructions. I think and when this if you get
all fast, he said. But if you do it, don't
come back to the winter circle. Pulling out to the
outside rail, dun saddle, sandser Pleasure took the track and
(01:55:22):
held his horses, and one, pulling up by a couple
of lengths, came back to the grand stand and gut
it to the outside rail, and the was and as
the jockey had been sworn to do. Then the horse
turned his head and looked at him. Then Sands the
Pleasure took the bit firmly between his teeth, went in
the winter circle where he belonged. So the trainer had
(01:55:44):
figured this one out correctly. In that first RaSE, Sands
a pleasure had disagreed with the placing judges and thought
he had won, and he took it badly, and another
horse was in the winter circle. And in the second
he knew he had been beaten, and that was that.
And the third he knew, curse will, that he had won,
and he was having no nonsense about it. In those
(01:56:04):
pre camera days, it was the custom of all losing
horse players to insist that the judges were set up
purbline incompetences, selected for their duties after an eye test
in which they not only couldn't pronounce the words, but
they couldn't see the letters. As a Pleasure thus proved
himself to have about the same judgment as a losing
horse player, which rated him close up behind the chimpanzee
(01:56:27):
and possibly ahead of the dog. That was Joe Palmer
got to talk about the throbod Training Center right here
on Paris Electionton Road. You're coming out the Paris Electionton Road,
go past the country Club Affair and it's just a
couple of miles down on the right, and it's a
(01:56:51):
great place to train your horses. They got to bring
a yearly out here and just take them right into
the races, you know, cause they got a one mile
track and a five eighth mile track, and they've got
you know, everything you need at their starting gates and
excellent facilities and quiet atmosphere. So we for number to
(01:57:16):
call out here for songs is say five nine, number
two nine three, eighteen fifty three. And I got to
wrap it up and thanks for listening, and we'll talk
to you next week.
