(03:22):
history of the thoroughbred industry. Waitand secretary of that, what's the flight
to athletes now line from Kentucky's Bluegrassregion. Here's Ursul Well, good morning,
and it's a miserable day here inKentucky. It's cold, it's thirty
six degrees, it's pouring down Raine. Yeah, there's nobody on a racetrack.
(03:45):
I don't know why we're going totake the damn truth. Wait,
wait, walking up? Somebody outthere, Yeah, there's I'd like to
go meet that exercise rider. Ibet I don't want to listen to him.
It must be his horse. Iwouldn't have had the guts to send
(04:09):
somebody out of this. It's reallybad, but it is a miserable day.
I mean it's pouring down rain, prn down rain. Driving in the
dark, yeah, I can't reallysee the road the middle. You know
those white lines they put down themiddle of the road. Those things are
passed due for repainting. I'm tellingyou, well, it's pretty good in
(04:31):
Bourbon County. Yeah. When youhit Fad County, watch out. Everything
disappears except the uh. The noise, the noise. Yeah, even when
you change change the uh? Whyam I going to change? Somebody just
pulling him. I don't know ifit's Michael or not. I don't know,
(04:54):
but anyway, it's John Nicholson withhim today. Yeah, Michael.
As everybody knows, who's retired fromthe active management of the old Friends,
the farm is going to continue.Yeah, the active management of the farm.
So he's called on John Nicholson.John. Uh, how did he
(05:17):
get so lucky? It's to getJohn Nicholson. I mean that's that's what
he used to manage a horse park. Yeah, and anybody could manage the
heart park and deal with with thestate government. God, I'll be able
to deal with Michael. I thinkthat's pretty interesting. But Michael's going to
(05:38):
stay on the farm. Here theycome, both of them, Okay,
great, come on around here.Okay, I'm moving. Yeah. Well,
I didn't know if you Toos wouldshow up today or not. You
mean, you know John John satdown over there. It's good to see
(06:01):
him, my friend. It's beena while. Arsenal, it's good to
see you. It has been toolong. Yeah, it is, but
it's wonderful. And you never change, and you're a liar, something's never
changed. Well, as I'm talkingabout, we were just talking about,
he's coming in to manage the farm. Oh yeah, he's coming into running.
(06:26):
And if it ain't good, managethe horse parking, deal with the
state government, you ought to beable to deal with you. Well,
that remains to be seen. Butmy job is to get out of his
way, which is more than I'vedone for you lately. Well, I'm
a little worried here we are havingfun this morning. Who's feeding the horses?
We better don't worry. I justlook out my window. Honestly,
(06:48):
got a deal. We're there. It's a quarter to six feeding the horses
this morning. Wow. Yeah, there's one thing you don't have to worry
about. Our old friends drown. These people are unbelievable. They come early
and they leave late, and you'reyou're talking about that. Yeah, oh
yeah, they really are good. They really they're right there. We finally
(07:09):
have the team together. This isthe World Series team. We're one to
five on the future book for theWorld Series. Okay, everything comes to
odds, doesn't that with Michael?Have you noticed what don't you have on
this rain? Did you win onthe rain? I don't. I don't
bet on people are weather. Ohokay, Johnny know you're gonna be taking
a couple of mine out there.Yeah, that was the very first thing
(07:30):
I heard. Very first Michael said, Now we gotta do this and that.
But here's number one. They're outthere, a couple of old exclaimers
surrounded by Grade one winners. Youknow, they're across from Bellamy Road and
Betsy and I go out and feedthem treats on Sunday. We give them
(07:50):
peppermints and I take some of ourfeed we got left and uh, Bellamy
Road figured that out in about twoseconds. And I was out there yesterday
and here he comes banging his hookon that gate. Mine, mine,
mine, We've made a new friend. Well, you know, I'll tell
you Michael's right about the people havebeen wonderful. And it is the eighteen
(08:15):
there's no question about that. Andand I just feel wonderfully comfortable. And
they've been very kind to me.Uh, they've been great. The horses.
I've got some more to do becausethey love this guy so much that
I'm a little bit uh there therethey say, who's he? Yeah,
(08:35):
and they look over at Michael asif you know, they say, is
this is he? All right? It'll take two seconds. It'll take two
seconds. They know that's jerious youngfashion says everything. You might be able
to run with him like he does. And we're both younger than ursul.
Nobody's younger than me. I gotone guy good friend is older than me.
(08:58):
That's Bob Cove. There you go, Well, you choose them,
well, well, he's a greatguy, Michael. What made you decide?
Well, I think been thinking aboutit for a couple of years because
unlike some people in this room,I don't think I'm gonna you know,
I'm not going to be able todo much when I'm in my nineties.
(09:18):
So had the ways that dude, and and you know, I talked to
some other people over the years andit was like it would be like they'd
be eighty percent there, eighty fivepercent there, ninety percent there. But
you know, you don't want tofool around. It's a big project now.
You can't have somebody do it that'snot capable. So when John and
(09:41):
I started talking a few months ago, I go, oh my god,
if John would do it, itwould be so great. I know I've
done everything. You lucked out,I know, and it's luck, lucklock.
Everything I've done is lucky. Yeah, everything everything that's worked out well,
it's been luck and occasionally cashing aticket to uh to this. I
mean, we're very very fortunate.I mean you can't. I mean,
(10:05):
these horses don't know how lucky theyare to get him to come in here
and do this for us, becauseit's it's uh it really means a lot,
and and uh, you know,we got to I gotta call it.
I didn't mention this to Johnny, but I we got to call it
from Susan westrom the former State Center. And uh, and she she wants
to do some things with John. She figured out some stuff. So yeah,
(10:28):
she didn't call until until John tookover the job. I never heard
from her. She'd been to thefarm on the tour and stuff, but
you know, she wasn't you know, she wasn't jumping out of the eighteen.
Yeah, there you go. Now, I just think that's fantastic.
You know, John forever and thena wonderful job at the horse park and
all that stuff. You really are, you know, you're loaded with the
(10:52):
right background and everything. I wasthinking's some it's great, and he loves
the horses and you know, hejust you know, it's just a great,
great fit. So well we goback, Yeah we do. When
you first first got here, Yeah, and met at the Hallow Champions at
the horse Park, and that's whenI heard of his idea. And I
(11:13):
think it was the Hallow Champions wassome sort of inspiration. Yeah. I
stole the idea, I stole everythingI stole the idea from the Hollow Champion.
I stole the name from Barbara Livingston'sbooks, and now they think that
Barbara Livings has stole the name fromus, which is that's fine, which
(11:33):
she laughsed about occasionally when she speaksto you. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
yeah. She'll be at the farmin a couple of weeks. Oh,
take pictures for the magazine. Takepictures for the new issue of the
magazine, the one that you wrotethe article for, which is spectacular,
by the way, nice job.Oh, thank you. Yeah, that
(11:54):
was kind of a fun article.Yeah yeah, Now where do you live
now? Well, I'm in Georgetown. I am four and four minutes and
fifteen seconds away from that. Fromthat, that works out well. And
you know, I was in Virginiasince the horse Park for about the last
(12:15):
six or seven years and was readyto come home. And you know,
it's just like Michael says, it'sserendipity. It's just luck, and uh,
we get together from time to time. And we were at the Brown
Barrel and and as we you know, often go and and from time to
time, and we it just wejust tripped into this conversation and I was
(12:35):
at a stage where I was kindof looking for something, you know,
something to do, but I wantedI'm just gonna be picky, you know,
it had to be something. Uhthat was an affair of the heart,
you know, when I I justdidn't want a job, and it
was just like divine intervention. Thisis yuh, this is things like this
(12:56):
are not jobs, they're they're callings, their causes and that's what I really
was interested in. My time atthe horse park was like that. That
was that was all about a greatermission and old friends. It is going
to be that way as well. The you know, the great thing about
old friends is what is the isthe condition that I mean, the status
(13:22):
is so good and the good willis so strong because of what Michael has
done. And so it's not likeyou're going in uh to repair anything or
anything like that. It's just it'snow it's just building building. That's wonderful.
Yeah, well good that is justdo you know anything you're Is he
(13:43):
in charge of the cats? No, I don't think so. We just
had a new cat last night, whole separate, no night before last a
new one. Yeah, this catgot dropped off at the farm, had
a baby one, only one thankgoodness. You never Yeah, no,
John doesn't have to take care ofthe cats. That's Diane. Diane the
(14:05):
cat. I've heard. I've heardwe got a problem with promiscuous cats.
Yeah, something to deal with that. Oh my god. Yeah. The
horses out there, they aren't theywonderful. I mean you just look at
him and go, my gosh.Remember and when they won this or that
or something else. It's unbelievable.Yeah, yeah, that is unbelievable.
(14:26):
I mean, I'm embarrassed to askyou to take mine. You know,
No, he wasn't. You gotover it. If you can't, well,
Ursel Ursel knows. You know.Ursel's trying to do a test for
the horses. And well, ifyou walk with a cane, you really
ought not to try to throw hayand you know that kind of he walks
(14:46):
with a cane, Yeah he does. I only see shitting down, truthfully.
I think that's the time he carriesit. You know, came.
I had reached the point people wouldcall up and you know, we just
get talking, and it knew Ihad horses. How many horses you got?
And I said, well, I'dsay I've got I've got two.
(15:09):
Uh, that I'm trying to outlive. Yeah, and it said it's gonna
be a nip and top. They'retwenty six two. So so I was
walking out there one day with thecane and I said, anybody walks through
the canes and we take care ofhorses in the first place. And I
got thinking, and here comes awinner. I'm gonna call Michael, and
(15:31):
God bless him. He took him. Wow, it's our honor. Yeah.
They you want to the last timeyou get called John? Yeah,
I want some races. Yeah theydid. Got your jewlip Cup at Keenland.
That's right, Yeah it is.How did you know that? Oh,
that's that's well known. That's whythat's known throughout the world. God,
(15:52):
I don't know how he did that. That. He was a horse
that was space behind the ears. You know. He would he would he
never never, never did want tobe a resourse again with as a thing.
And he would just low of gugaround. You know. I think
that day some horse came out andhe was running dead last on the gut
(16:14):
in the turn and some horse cameover and hit him and knock him off
stride, and I think it musthave pissed him off. He came flying.
That's the only time I've seen himrun Fox Hunter. Yeah, the
huntsman said you couldn't get to thebottom of it. He would just go
hours. And we always had totrain eyes to go along and go through
too slow to sprint. Everybody hadto slow down in the front. And
(16:41):
then we come up there and grabone. That's it still wow. Yeah,
well we were. We were alot in the money because of that,
and that's that's the truth of it. Yeah, we had to be
well, we couldn't have stayed init as long as we did, but
we had a lot of fun.Oh it was fun. Another little horse
of Luciden. I had to namehim Major because I couldn't remember his name.
(17:06):
And uh oh, that's why Danecost me Major. He was Major.
What don't say? He was strictlya rescue Francis Raally And you know
Francis, Yes, I know,yeah, I know you're talking. Yes,
well, she was a charmer. He well, no, if you
know her, every everybody, youdon't forget Francis. She retired a horse
(17:29):
to us, huh yeah, ohyeah, from when she was over at
the binery. Yeah, oh yeah. So she called us one day and
said, there's an old class horsedown here that he's broken down and his
future looks kind of bleaking. AndI was looked him up, pulled the
past performances on he you know, was raised over Clayburn. He went one
(17:53):
hundred and sixty something thousand, andI just pps he was eight years old
at the time. And I lookedat him and you read it down to
there, you know. He said, gamely, a game jack here,
let's go look at him. AndI said, well, let's just look
up the trailer because I make twotrips, right. Yeah, we only
(18:15):
put the hood trailer on here justin case and put him in the stall.
He was in the stall a coupleof months. Yeah, his he
had a thing on his what wasleft or right front, I can't remember
which one it was now, thesides of a volleyball. I mean,
it wasn't a mess. But youcan't see now, No, you can't.
(18:37):
He's not grateful. Yeah, he'snot grateful at all. Well,
you don't expect anything. That's whyI tell kids that comes to the farm,
because you know, your parents tellyou to reach for the stars all
the time. That's totally untrue. If you wake up every morning and you're
unhappy, then you have to loweryour expectation. And a certain point you
wake up, you're happy. Youknow you're where he's supposed to be.
Yeah's shaving off those expectators. Igot to write all this down. No,
(19:03):
I think the parents are going tobe very glad to get rid of
me. I'll tell you, Igive those kids terrible advice. Whenever I
run into a tour, there ain'tlittle kids on their girls. Especially,
I take them over and I said, now here's what you say, over
and over, I want a pony. I want a pony. When I
(19:26):
was at the park, I toldI told our people, our job is
to get mom and dad to writea check. And we observed the industry
served our purpose. There you go, and that's going to be as motto
with all friends. That's good.I don't know how you did it.
(19:47):
It was always a good idea. And again I tell people at the farm,
and if you have a it shouldn'thave taken this long. But in
any case, I didn't think soanyway, but it took a long time.
But you know, it taught methat if you have a really good
idea, which this is, nomatter how bad you are at it.
Eventually it'll work if you don't stop. Yeah, you know. So you
(20:08):
just keep doing it and doing itand doing it. And if you have
a bad idea, no matter howmuch how hard you work at or how
good you are at it, it'llnever work. That's that's just a kind
of all the The rest is thedetails that you gotta go one after another,
gotta gotta you still got to getthrilled every day to look out the
(20:29):
window and see these horses, andit's just it's thrilling. It's donna I
had with Jack, and I alwaystried to find give homes or most of
them died with us, our ownhorses. And uh, I've heard about
Michael, a guy. There's aguy over Midway that's wants to rescue horses.
And I said, well, I'llfind out about him. And I
(20:52):
think I called him. See ifI get him on the show. How
many years ago was that? Attwenty I have been able to get rid
of him. The man who cameto breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
I'm not leaving, that's great.I'm just going to stay out of John's
way, though you are going tocome in on Saturday. Still, whatever,
(21:12):
you guys want absolutely, you too, come on, want I would
I would love to do that. This is the fun place to be.
Yeah, come in and well Michaelis is kind of a target. You
know, we kind of toss itback and forth, so we just want
to lose Michael. I'm still I'mstill bleeding from last week's experience. Was
(21:34):
that that good the week before? You're van over the side? Oh yeah,
I ran my Dan over the overthe thing and it was great.
I ran my Dan over a walldown here in the dark, and it
was so it was just sitting thereon top of the wall, bent like
this, and I'm going, ohmy god, I'm seeing all these people,
(21:56):
all these trainers, and all theseold guys that I knew, I'd
known for the last twenty years, and I can see him saying under their
breath, I told you he wasan idiot, just taking twenty years to
get proof of it. He can'teven drive a car in a road.
But anyway, what was great aboutthat is a tow guy came. My
(22:17):
friend Cordero came from the tow company, and I went to pay him and
they said, Keenland paid for it. That's nice. Ye yeah, yeah,
really nice. Doctor uh, doctorStuart Brown was there and he helped
and everybody helped us very nice. And I was back on the road.
I got said Malone, as John, how is Nick doing? Nick is
(22:37):
has fooled me and surprised me.He is totally retired and enjoying it and
being a retired person. When heleft Kinglin, he said, you know,
I'm retiring, and I said,well, I don't believe that,
you know. I think you justare in charge and always have them of
everything in your realm. And heis. I think he you know,
(23:02):
he's contributed to the industry when asked, but he is enjoying Naples. He
comes up. He's here for afew months, but down there and he's
doing great. And he is particularlypleased that things have worked out with Michael
and I and about old friends.Because he was Nick was always a good
supporter. Absolutely, he was absolutely. I was always very fond of Nick
(23:29):
and he was great to him anytime. Soon tenem I asked a bat well,
I grew fond of him. Actuallyit took me a while. He
had to move the floor. Yeah, got him out of the foot well.
When Tubby one that silver jewel cup, Nick Blessed's Heart was walking by
(23:51):
and I said, come on,Nick getting the picture. He said,
okay, he's in that wind picture. Oh that's great. Yeah, Tubby
th wind picture was got. No, that's great, that's great. I
thought that made it extra fun.Well I will share that with him,
I'm sure. But I might betalking to him before the end of the
day. Good. Good, AndI'll tell him you sat alone. Oh
yeah he was. He was alreadysreally nice to me. Yeah, for
(24:15):
some reason. He did a greatjob. He did, he did.
Yeah, I had a nice guy, very nice. He's nice to everybody.
That was the important thing. Itwasn't just nice to a few people.
He was nice to everybody. Yeah, racent I remember relation. He
came over here and he came walkingin him right here. And uh,
(24:40):
of course Jim Pendergrass is the managerhere. It has been forever and Jim
is a great guy indeed, anduh says, what how the tracks out
there? I said that the tracksare perfect. He said, these tracks
are really really good, And hesaid, why is that phone of the
gym? And his book stops rightthere and now he's doing the Keenland's tracks.
(25:04):
Yeah, he does a really goodjob. Yeah, excellent. Well
are you started yet? You start? Well, the official day is February
first, he's already been working overtime. But the answer is yes, yeah,
we've we've hit the run. We'vehit it running and butt. But
(25:26):
it's great fun. And and againthe team there, obviously they're very devoted
to Michael, but they're very they'remainly they're devoted to the horses. Yeah,
and that's the key thing. Andeverything about Old Friends is integrity,
you know, and the integrity forthe horses, integrity of the cause,
uh, and integrity to the supporterseverything, and that's reflected with the people
(25:52):
there. And that's what I'm that'swhat I'm really excited. I'm really excited
to work with everybody. Well, and if you I'm up there once a
week, we'll bring Betsy and wego feed the boys and to do and
you look around it, all ofit, and there's not a horse out
there that looks like, oh that'sa little you know. They all look
(26:15):
especially for their age for crying outloud. You look at some horse that
looks wonderful and he's down in hisback because he's thirty or something, you
know, but they look super that'ssurprising. You're bright, aren't they there?
That you can tell the happiness andyou can you can sense it,
you know, and it's permeates thewhole place. You know. You just
(26:37):
yeah, you feel that, Iknow exactly what you mean. Yeah,
it's just a great thing to see. And the good thing about all this
is the fact that Michael is stillthere, and that's that's what's going to
keep the magic going. I don'tthink that you can by prime out of
there, really, no matter howyou try. You have to call the
cops. That's been done once ortwice. What Diane think of this,
(27:06):
I think I think I think shethinks it's great. Except she you know,
Diane's wonderful because one of the thingsshe does is she'll say, you
go on the track today, You'regoing to simulcast today, you go in
the red mile go Yeah? Whyoh? She gets a big smile on
her face when I'm going a marriageis based on the fact that my wife
wants me to go to the track. And years ago, when I was
(27:27):
covering the movies, I got theinterview James Garner. Oh yeah, he
was a great guy, and Isaid, I have to ask you this.
I said, because my editor askedme to I hate to ask you
this question. I said, I'mkind of embarrassed, but I'm going to
ask it anyway, So believe me. And he's just believe me. I
haven't asked a lot of embarrassing questions. Don't worry about it, I said,
Okay, fine, I said,I said, you know, how
(27:48):
do you your major you know, your major movie star? Really, this
great looking guy. You could haveany one with practically in Hollywood that you
want, You've been, You've been. He was starring with some of the
most beautiful women in the world. How do you stay married for thirty five
years to the same woman? Andthere was a long, long pause,
(28:10):
and he goes golf. That's greatsthe same thing with us. Have you
told John this story that my favoritestory about Creator? Oh yeah, So
we had this horse creator John, who you may remember. He didn't race
in America, but he was ShaikMuhammad's horse and he raced in Europe and
(28:33):
he won some nice races. AndCash asked me, since Steve's brother was
his jockey over in Europe and was, and he was spectacular looking. He
was the first horse with Sunshine Foreverthat we brought home from Japan after his
breeding career was over, and hewas kind of a last minute toss him
because I said, gee, wiz, you know it's expensive and all that.
Nobody knows who this horse is.But he became a huge hit on
(28:56):
the tours, and my wife fellin love with him, beautiful chestnut.
And when we first started, youknow, it was her and me and
an all broken down golf cart andfeed in the morning. Basically that was
it. And one morning in thewinter, it was a terrible, terrible
morning. I mean it was likesleet, snow and ale, and literally
my glasses were frozen over, couldn'tsee out of him, and there was
(29:19):
ice. There was literally icicles comingdown from my hood on my coat,
and I'm climbing over the fence becauseI'm afraid I'll leave the I'm afraid I'll
leave the gate open or else.I couldn't get the gate open because it
was frozen. And I'm climbing overthe fence the creator's paddock and ton to
(29:41):
clean out his water and make surethe ice was it wasn't frozen, and
I got his feed there and I'mclimbing over the fence and I hear this
voice behind me on the golf cardsay, gee, I hope he's okay.
It's awfully cold. I go whatI said, I'm dying here.
I get nothing. I'm dying.I'm freezing to death, I said,
you know, And then I saidsomething really stupid. I said, you
(30:03):

She goes, Well, let meput it this way. He's bigger,

made more money. Great, thatwas it. Oh man, I never

Really I learned that. I guessthat's my favorite, Michael. You know
she was, he was, buthe was a great horse. Yeah,

the great two place horse, andit's it's a very nice pedigree and you'd
go on and racist marriage. Soshe's in. She is in Barn twenty

at her, and remember that's agreat place to board your horses over at
(35:15):
Indian Creek. Give them a talkabout that while you're there, and if
you're want to ensure your horses.Indian Creek's closely affiliated with the Cleaveward Agency
was sounded founded back in nineteen thirtyone, a vintage year by the way,
so they've been in Venice for ninetytwo years. Kind of like me,
(35:39):
if they know what they're doing anyway. So but if you want to
cover at the best price available, just called Shack Parish over there, Bruce

(36:27):
number again, well, let megive you the Indian Creek number. I
didn't give you that one. Orbetter still, I give you the website.
It's Indian Creek ky dot com.Now back to the Thoroughbred Training Center
and Ursa Ellis, Yeah, Ihave one of them. Shack Shack's a
good guy. Yeah, you knowShacky Jack Perish. Yes, everybody in
(36:52):
the world, everybody, yes, yes, and he knows everything about everybody.
So if you ever have an I'vementioned anybody that even drove through Bourbon
County that he didn't know, especiallyif it got closed to Paris. Yeah,
it's true. He just we havelunch over there a lot together.
(37:14):
I have not, you know,I need I need to get over to
Paris more since I've been back fromVirginia, including seeing the new Secretary statue,
which oh yeah, everybody tells meit's just really the painting on the
building. Yes, I think that'sspectacular. Yeah, that's a guy must
(37:37):
have had a big fat brush, you know, because there's a lot of
paint up there. How long haveyou been back from Virginia. I've been
back about eighteen months. The boy, they're going big time now, yes
they are. And you know,I was running the Virginia Horse Center,
the equestrian facility there, and itwas actually in pretty bad financial condition,
(38:01):
and we got involved on a numberof things, hotel taxes and all that
to try to get it out oftrouble. But we got we got involved
with the historical racing machine revenue.Oh yeah, and you know gaming took
off in Virginia all of a sudden. There were some dark days when Colonial
(38:22):
shut down, but then it gotrevived Historic racing came in and all of
a sudden, it just was wasmoving. So I wanted to put my
hand up for the Virginia Horse Centerto maybe share some in that. And
so I go to the Racing Commissionand who's the chairman but DG. Van
Cleef, And I felt like Ifelt back at home. As soon as
(38:45):
I saw the chairman, I said, I think, so everything's going to
be all right. Hasn't been Dannyin years and years, it hasn't changed
a bit. And you know, ran the commission like that like a gentleman.
You almost see it. And everythingwas in good order and done properly.
And we ended up participating in therevenue at a at a you know,
(39:09):
in a small way in the bigpicture, but in a big way
for the Virginia Horse Center. That'sgood, you know it, because you
just tuned in, as is JohnNicholson. But every now and then I
have nobody tune in late. Somebodytuned in. Maybe somebody, Yeah,
there you go, she's another listenersince mom died. Yeah, well that's
(39:32):
there's certainly a big time racing overthere now. Well it's it's revived,
and you know, and and Itis good because as we know, Virginia
is the it's kind of the mothercountry, you know, and you know
it needs to it needs to.Racing needs to be strong there. The
hunter world and the you know, steeple chase world and all that's great.
(39:55):
I mean, it's uh the Virginiagentry or in their job there. But
racing went through a bit of abit of a rough patch. But it's
coming on strong now. Now whereis the where you were in Lexington,
believe it or not? So?And I was. I was commuting.
I didn't give up my home hereand so I did a lot of commuting.
(40:20):
So it was Lexington to Lexington, door to door, Interstate sixty four,
the whole way six hours. Well, and I started making it in
about five. But you know,I don't want to talk about, you
know, speed limits and things likethat. Tickets did you get? I
(40:43):
got one? It's it's the oneticket I did get. Was. I
happened to be on the phone withthe folks at the Massachusetts hbp A and
we started talking about something and Igot all exercise and excited and juiced up.
And the next thing I know,I'm going eighty five and I know
(41:04):
and then an officer took exception anddarned and they told me that HbA HBPA
said send the build us the usgood. That's that's that's pretty good.
Yeah. Now you're originally from Lexington, originally from Winchester. The person that
(41:27):
got me, Jackie involved with horsesor it kind of inspired me with Bill
On O'Neill. Bill O'Neill and TonyBasil and all that that woman is on
the Boma was on farm of Winchesterand you know with me growing up.
My my first horse hero was TVcommercial in the sixties, very very good
(41:50):
study of its too, and itreally came into his fame as a as
a stud horse. But was inthe sixty eight Derby the Dancer's Image Derby,
and uh uh there was well manneredwho was had a particularly good two
year old career. The Bomason horsesalways did well as two year olds,
and anyway he would. He wasthe first person to take me to the
(42:13):
track and it kind of introduced thatworld and and uh it was really great
when I got to the horse parkand was doing that there. Mister O'Neill
uh in his later years was veryinvolved with the High Hope steeplechase and that
was great fun for me to getto work with him. And he had
been my you know when I justsaid it, they were having that?
(42:37):
Did they usually have it? Oh, the High Hope, Yes, was
the horse. Yeah. I thinkat first it was down Hunt country somewhere.
Yeah, I can't I remember going, but I can't remember exactly.
Yeah, it was that a way. That's I did have it over Buck
Pond, not Buck Pond now,I see, I just don't remember the
(42:58):
name anymore. But yeah, Iremember when they very first started they stood
have Bmazon. I had a nicehorse named Etonian, oh, yes,
yeah, yeah, and he couldget you a runner. And he was
very one of those horses, youknow. Although he could, he was
standing cheap. That's why I waslooking at him. And I had a
painting of that, a little paintingof that horse with mister O'Neill's daughter Judy
(43:22):
with Tonia, and that was inour house for a long time. That's
funny you mentioned that I hadn't thoughtabout that horse in a long time.
Well, he was kind of horse. I used to go out and buy
one horse at yearling at at Keenland, you know, and I was interested
in Etonians because he was an unpopularhorse, you know, but he's how
your runner, yeah, you know. And a fella from West Virginia named
(43:47):
Britton Jones had a couple of themout there, and that's how I met
Burry. He was still living inWest Virginia at that time, and it
bred to Etonian. He had acouple of Tonian Irlands and I didn't buy
one of them. I think theywould. My limit was three thousand dollars.
I think it's so Brig's pretty goodsales when you know they probably went
(44:10):
up past three thousand. Yeah.Yeah, I didn't know that connection between
Governor Jones and that and that howabout that? Yeah? Yeah, what
a good guy he was, Ohabsolutely, you know and he it was
to have these legends at this time, at least, you know, in
my life. To have had theopportunity to know him was uh. And
(44:34):
he too was one of Michael's firstoh yeah, first and the early supporters
when when everybody wasn't too sure aboutwhat you're gonna do? What? Yeah,
he and I can't tell the storyas well as Michael, but but
I heard Michael tell the stories thatthat that Briton said wait a minute,
(44:55):
you're good. You're gonna take thesehorses and you're gonna You're not gonna breed
them, You're not going to raisehim. You're gonna what And he said,
well, here's some money, andgood luck to you. And they
ended up sending horses and then endedup sending horses and being a great supporter
both both you know, vocally andfinancially. Uh. You know, in
(45:15):
those early days when uh, noteverybody was right, but it was still
kind of a new idea. Oneof the things that that I've come to
appreciate, uh, is how thoroughbredaftercare has really taken off. And you
know, in the time that Iwas at the horse park in it and
(45:36):
in Virginia because of Michael. That'sit. That's it, and it was
it's become it's a thing. It'sbecome a part of the industry. It's
it's an accepted correct thing to do. And and I think that's the point
or so that it because of oldfriends and Michael. It's it's on a
(46:00):
light on the right way to dothings. Yeah. And what was the
what horse was that that they wasin Germany and they put him down?
Remember the horse that was in Germany. It's done and I think he won.
I don't know if he wanted aDerby or what it was. Ferdinand
Ferdinand's in in Sweden wasn't I can'tremember, but it was such a shocked
(46:23):
everybody that was and then Michael wasalready getting established and that really was was
wonderful. I think that drove thatthat was an awakening moment. Yes,
yeah, it was. It wasterrible and and just pointed out the Needin.
Yeah, Ferdinand was was and Iwas thinking it was that he was
(46:45):
in either career Japan, but Icould be wrong in your in your okay,
I think it moved him to Swedenor somethings. Yeah, so uh,
but but now it's it's you know, a big part. There's several
good organizations that do really good things, and you know, we're all supporting
(47:06):
each other. And the third breadafter care Alliance is making sure that there's
accreditation, which is good too,so that there's you know that everybody has
standards that you that you have. When Michael started to catch on, every
time you turn around, there wassome peroxided blonde that was going to retire
(47:29):
something weird, you know, likeparade horses or something something something, you
know, and they all just fadedoff into the distance. Well, the
standard of care I think was setby old friends and that and the third
bread after care alliance is making surethat anybody who wants to do this,
and that's great that they want to, but but you need the good housekeeping
(47:52):
seal of approval that you're doing itthe right way so that the horses look
like you, like you were talkingthat when you go out there, you
know, they are enjoying their retirement. Yeah, they look great, all
of them. They do. Sowhat are you looking at me? Funny
about a commercial? Yeah? restIover here? He runs the show.
(48:14):
Yeah, he has the project cantell Thank god, would you hand me
my phone? I think I'm upthe second? Thanks, Yeah you will.
You got one up next. We'vegotta I've got to do a cool
more. And then you got totake care of Ralph Quilling. You know
Ralph. Oh yeah, everybody, everybody that's he owns a parish, you
know. Yeah, that's yeah, you got if you want anything down in
(48:37):
Paris, that's so you got togo see. Yeah, it's a damn
truth. Yeah, yeah, it'sright, that's right. He's got a

talk about Hill Parker. Hill Parkeris important because he is a real estate
(59:04):
agent and he also knows horses. He is as a two prong bit of
knowledge that if you'd like, ifyou are going to be interested in buying
a farm, you want to knoweverything about farms, and you want to
know all kinds of stuff about realestate, and Hill Parker's got you covered.
Not many people like that. Hehas years of experience with event horses,
(59:30):
jumpers. I think he actually usedto ride steeple choosers, which is
strange. Fox hunters, dreusage, and he trains thowbreads. We used to
see him out here all the timewhen Ursua was calking. He would come
out and work them. He'd workthem himself. It was just really knows
what he's doing. And the pointI'm trying to make is if you're looking
(59:52):
at a piece of land and youwant to have horses on it. He
needs to talk to you like, for instance, he knows the correct questions
like what's the primary purpose of theproperty, stabling? Breeding, training?
What you need to know what todo? What If you're going to pull
a barn, you better know whatyou're doing or you're gonna blow a lot
(01:00:16):
of money. So you have tolook at the structures. You have to
look at a barn and know whatyou're looking at. That's the difference.
How big are the stalls If you'regoing to breed and you're going to fool
your mayors, got to have agood sized double stall at least so an
(01:00:36):
access. There's just all kind ofunanswered questions. If you don't know the
questions, you can wind up inbig trouble. So give Hill Parker a

something for my friends over Bristnet andone of my friends from Bloodstock Research Information

second to talk about Bloodstock Research InformationServices Bristnet. We have got all the

lots of pedigree reports. We've gotAmerican Produce Record, We've got individual trainer

handicapping and racing information both Zucker ResearchInformations Information Services Brisinet dot com. I
heard you talking about Yeah to visitArrow that vote No. I think is
a very promising three newly turned threeyear old form. I think he's the
horse the bead in that turf Waypreview tonight. I he I think he
(01:03:57):
exits the best outside of the Breeders'Cup races. I think he exits the
best turf race for two year oldslast year, and that was the Bourbon
Stakes at Keelan King Group won thatrace, came back, had an extremely
troubled trip in the Breeders' Cup JuvenileTurf was eleventh at the top of the
stretch and went once he got outthere in the open. He flew home
(01:04:18):
to be beaten two lens and fourth. The runner up in that race,
Noted exits a win in the PilgrimState or the Pulpit Stakes at gold Stream
Park. Horse that ran fourth inthere just ran in the head second to
promising colt Otello and the Mucho machoman first amendment, I believe, and
(01:04:40):
and and there's a several others aswell that were in that field, including
a horse that's in the Dania Beachtoday that I'll get to here in a
minute for a pick. So Ilike that race the Bourbon. Some horses
had troubled trips in there, andI thought vo No ran really big third
there, and he's got a future, and I think he's gonna win the
(01:05:03):
Turfloy Preview tonight. Now he's histhe favorite. I got a better price
at Turfoy tonight for all our listeners. One race later on the card is
a pretty solid allowance race. Racenumber six is the Hollywood Preview for three
year olds. It's a Steak RaSEseven and it's an allowance race at a
mile. And I like number tenRarefied Air in there for Kenny meck Peak.
(01:05:27):
He won the Rushaway Stakes last springat a price. He's coming back
around into form and he's listed atten to one in his third start off
the layoffs. So I'm gonna gowith the Rarefied Air and Ray seven to
Turfoy tonight. And I did mentionthe turf A previews some other Steaks action
we have this weekend. Gold StreamPark has three steaks. They have the
Ginger Brew for three year old phillieson the turf. They got the Limestone
(01:05:50):
for six six for a long sprintfor three year olds, and they got
the Dania Beach which is I thinka dynamite turf race this afternoon. It's
raised eleven at Turfway. You havein that field. A gate Road is
the horse to beat on the morningline and going to be the favorite for
Pletcher, who just ran fifth inthe Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. But two
(01:06:15):
horses from that bourbon are in thisfield, including Palm Tree who's three to
one on the morning line. Hewas seventh in that bourbon. He came
back and just got beatn neck Bynoted he's a promising turf horse for Godolphin
and Brandon Walsh. But my toppick in the Dania Beach is number three
Depiction and Depiction is a cult thatby more than ready for Shred too that
(01:06:40):
broke his maiden. I thought superimpressively the second time out at Els Park
and he won by five and ahalf lance and couldn't have looked better doing
it. And the horse that ranthird in there. Sneid came back and
broke his maiden and then touched thedirt and he just ran second in the
gun Runner stakes at Fairground. SoI think that was a you know,
(01:07:01):
there was at least a good horsein that race. Depiction went off next
at seven to two, nine totwo in the Bourbon and he had a
real trouble trip. Like I said, some horses, even Palm Tree,
had some trouble in that race becausethey got all packed up in the stretch.
But Depiction was just flat out stoppedin traffic and once he got free
(01:07:23):
late with Christian Torres, I meanhe couldn't even pull him up after the
wire. He galloped out full ofrun and he's coming back in that spot.
He shows a bunch of bullet worksfor Devaux, Tyler gaff Leones picking
him up and he's eight to oneon the morning line. So number three
Depiction in the Daniel Beach at goldStream Park tonight. Wow or today,
(01:07:45):
I tell you how many steaks him. At Turf they just have the one
steak for three year old. Niceallowances. They have a maiden race and
like I think, race five thatI thought was a looked pretty good uh,
you know turf Way, it's he'sgot the best prices out there.
(01:08:08):
But it has been a little bitand there was like one big upset like
Thursday I was watching, but youknow, been a little bit more formful
here the field once you get sometimesyou get a little bit of a thing
where you get like one ten horsefield after another there and then sometimes you
get like like you'll get seven thenormal like seven eight force fields. You
see a lot of places and thosesometimes can be formful. But I think
(01:08:31):
it's a great betting that you knowfair. You have to have a feel
for it. I think you haveto have a feel for the horsemen,
for the breeding of these horses thatare switching surfaces and just you know,
et cetera, et cetera, becauseit's real challenging. I'll mention in Oakland
Park they're gonna have a stake racetoday. It only got five horses for
(01:08:54):
phillies. But the race before thatrace eight at Oakland today is a mile
on the sixteenth allowance rate. Andkennyy Peak has a horse in there,
Escape Bologist number ten. He's sevento two and I really like him moving
forward. He won an allowance too. Starts back at Keelyn he beat leading
contender who was favored Bert Chad Brownand just won an allowance last weekend at
(01:09:15):
Aqueduct, and it's going to bea Steake's horse. And the horse that
was a close third in there wasGrand Aspen who came back and won an
allowance for Pletcher and he just ranahead second in the Harlan's Holiday to O'Connor.
And Grand Aspen's going to Pegas's WorldCup next now, so that was
a really strong field. Then hecame back last time he got beat ahead
(01:09:36):
by a lead command performance. Thathorse had just run ahead second to First
Mission, who got beat ahead inthe Grade two Clark. So I'm just
saying escape Ball has been facing bettercompany his last two races. He's seven
to two in the morning line. He's a horse I'm gonna bet at Oaklam
Park today. Who you know what? What's that? Yeah? We have
(01:10:00):
we had We had the smarty Joneslast Monday. So it was the first
Kentucky Derby qualifier of the year andCatching Freedom won that. He's by constitution.
He looked good for Brad Cox doingthat. Cox had another cold in
their Gettysburg address that got all roughedup at the start shuffle back to last,
but he ran okay for fourth.I think both both catching Freedom for
(01:10:24):
sure, and even Lucas's horse, just Steal, who ran second. He's
a one turn horse at least atthis stage in his career. I don't
care if he's by Justify or not. I mean, Lucas might continue to
run him in these preps. ButI thought he ran a really good race.
He was three four wide the entireway and he just got tired in
the final sixteenth of a mile, because I think he's good at a mile
(01:10:44):
or less, so that was apretty solid race. We have the five
horse drome today at Aqueduct. We'llsee if it has I don't know if
he'll have any impact whatsoever moving forward. But then no qualifiers next week.
But and then the next Kentucky DerbyPoints race, Quality Fire will be January
twentieth at Fairgrounds the La Compe Steaksand that should be a good race.
(01:11:05):
Looks like we got some good horsespointing for that, and you know it's
the fair Grounds preps have had havereally had good horses the last few years,
and they've made an impact in theChip Crown races at this point.
Do you think this is an aboveaverage I do, I do. I
(01:11:27):
mean, I think I've talked aboutit before. You know, I just
looked at the speed ratings last yearof all these two year old stakes.
The Buds Cup Juvenile is a greatexample. Forte got a one oh one
for winning the Juvenile the year before, Fierce and has got a won twelve.
And there's a lot of these twoyear olds that got tripled like around
one one hundred or high nineties orone oh one or whatever excuse me in
(01:11:49):
races, and it bodes well. Now they have to keep moving forward.
The other thing about the crop too, that you know most people don't care
about, but I've seen it.I mean, I think there's a whole
bunch of good three year old turfhorses out there. Yeah, I think
it's it's a pretty strong group headinginto this season. So I think there's
like, you know of horse likeNoted who just won the Pulpit Steaks.
(01:12:12):
To me, he's like he's gothe's got a shot to run in the
Derby because they've got this Jeff RubySteaks at Turfway, and that race has
actually produced the winner, Rich Strikeand the runner up to Phills last two
years, so I'm not taking anythingaway from it, but it's on Tippetta
and he could theoretically, you know, be in the race, and you
know, who knows, he mighttake to the main track at Churchill and
(01:12:33):
be a factor. But even ifhe's not, I still think that horse
is going to be really good onthe turf this season. They got a
lot of turf races down in Floridathat they can practice on. Yeah,
I mean, well they've got theythey redid the turf course and they didn't
open it reopen it until the openingof the Championship meet in December, and
(01:12:54):
then the Fairgrounds turf course just indynamite shape. Good. You think,
got a lot more barns down there, and they get big fields for their
turf races. So yeah, Imean it's it was in great They got
it in great shape this fall andit's it's holding up terrific. So the
turf racing at Fairgrounds, Golf Streamand Tampa Bay and otherwise you're gonna be
(01:13:16):
running on dirt or synthetic. Yeah, Well, I wondered because there's so
much sand in the turf in Floridathat I just wondered if that made a
big difference. You know, itmight seem to be. I can remember
the old days that the only timeyou've been on the turf just goes,
(01:13:36):
couldn't run anywhere else. Oh yeah, I remember when uh Keelan put in
their turf course. It was abig deal and they were really proud of
it. And for those first yearsthey were tricking running a ball. I
mean they were flat out going, like the European style thing where hey,
if it rains, it doesn't matter, our turf can take it. And
(01:13:59):
they used to run right now itgets a little bit of rain, they're
gonna just cance, you know, switch it off. But yeah, it's
the turf race in there. Thenused to used to be far and few
between tracks that had it. Youcan go back and watch I mean Churchill
Downs can get turf until like nineteeneighty or something. I mean you go
back and watch those triple Crown winners. There's no turf course there win Secretary
(01:14:21):
and Seattle slew and affirmed or winningthe Derby. So yeah, there was
you know, there was some goodturf horses for sure in the fifties and
sixties. I mean Kelso round tablehorses like that were good turf horses a
right, But there's a lot moreopportunity now and a lot more horses that
(01:14:43):
are per se turf horse. Ohyeah, you know, they seemed to
me they're more competitive for some reason. It's nothing to see five or six
sols pace makes the race so much. On dirt, I mean even closers
are running early to establish positioning, and on turf it's a little bit more
about finishing. So you know, theoretically, I mean, you're gonna turf
(01:15:04):
sprints are a different dynamic, butin turf routes you're gonna have a situation
where even horses that are on thelead are essentially more raiding on the lead,
and horses that are on the leadand dirt are using their speed to
their advantage, you know, Imean, they can be out there raiding
too, but typically a lot ofspeed. You know, speed get speed
(01:15:25):
manners and un dirt impositioning and everythingin a sense, and it turf's just
more about finishing. So it basicallyto me, it's like, you know,
you could have like cheaper horses becompetitive and cheaper turf races than per
se maybe in dirt races. Butyou know, I don't know what it
is exactly interesting stuff, very veryI don't know how you keep up with
(01:15:48):
them. Oh my god, Idon't either. You don't do anything else.
I guess well, I got awife and dogs and family's got stuff.
I fall a lot of football andbasketball and so yeah, we've got
a basketball game today, U kUK fan. Oh yeah, of course,
(01:16:08):
yeah, big time UK fans,So I'll be watching. It's an
exciting team this year. Oh yeah, it's our best. It's our it's
our best team in a long time. We got really good guard play and
you have a really good but tunam, but that's the plan absolutely, yeah,
it's nothing unusually haven't starting, youknow, I'm not starting though,
(01:16:30):
but playing five freshmen at one timetoo, and it's yeah, there's definitely
you know, there's a couple ofclassmen on that roster that are important,
especially Trey Metchell, who was atransfer, and Antonio Reeves who was a
transfer but played last year. Sothose two guys are like your benchmarks.
(01:16:51):
But everybody else, you know,I do Theerro is a sophomore, but
everybody else is pretty much. Buthe's still rocked too, I mean he's
like, didn't play a lot asa freshman and he's still just grown into
his frame. So, yeah,we got a really young team, but
they're talented. And one thing abouthim is is that they're they not It
(01:17:12):
doesn't seem to be a bunch ofindividuals. They all seem to be in
it for each other as a group, right, So it's it's exciting,
you know. I think there's alot of exciting players. You know,
Bradshaw and Shepherd and you know,Dillingham and all these guys are you know,
and there's a guy like Justin Edwardswho hasn't really done much yet,
but he could still play real welldown this stretch. So we'll see how
(01:17:36):
it goes moving forward. But yeah, it looks really promising for them to
make a serious run in March inthe tournament. Well this is maybe off
the subject, but I was watchingtelevision and they got a guy playing college
basketball that's a six year senior.Six. Ye. Yes, they just
(01:17:57):
granted the They just granted some quarterbacka seventh year. That's what. Yeah,
maybe it was the seventh year. It's that COVID that the COVID is
automatically giving you an extra year. And then you can have a red shirt
year. So theoretically, if youwere in school in the twenty twenty season,
(01:18:18):
you've got technically five years of eligibility. Yeah, five years of eligibility,
plus you could have like a redshirt year, which would be a
sixth year. And then if youhave some kind of like a issue where
you get hurt or something, havingan injury or some kind of hardship,
you can apply for a hardship andthey can give you an extra year.
(01:18:40):
So there's some people taking advantage ofthat seventh year. This guy's gonna be
going social scooter. You're typically he'slike had to sit out for some years
for something, probably like either injuryor just switch at schools or something.
Because most of these people aren't playingall seven years. You know, the
quarterback for Washington that's in the championshipgame, he's in his like six years,
(01:19:03):
he's had two he's had two acls and elbow injury. Though yeah,
al yeah, we had a dogthat had on g was okay,
I've got one other How important? How good do you think it matters where
(01:19:26):
these guys put these horses? Thecondition book? How important is the condition
book? Now? Well, well, I think it's different for these like
horses that are the space horses thatI'm pointing for the Derby. Yeah,
they're they're like picking spots up ahead. It's not the same thing. It's
like trying to find races or fellracis. I mean all the rest of
the trainers a lot of their stockthere. You know, there's a lot
(01:19:51):
of times races don't fill and stuff. There's a lot of hustling and bustling
that goes into getting like at someof these tracks, the races to fill.
Yeah, maybe that's not an shoeat Turtfla in Oakland and some tracks
that tend to have more of horsepopulation, but a lot of tracks,
you know or whatever, but alot of the tendency now it's just for
a few races. You look atall these horses that were in the Breeder's
(01:20:13):
Cup or even stakes horses last year, a lot of them are looking at
just two preps. You know, the horses from the Breeders Cup are looking
at two preps. A horse likeHonor Marine that won the Kentucky Jockey Club
in late November, he's looking attwo preps. You look at Dornink and
Sierra leone that ran second, firstand second in the rems and they're looking
(01:20:34):
at two preps. So that's that'sone hundred percent the trend. And whether
that benefits them or not is another'smatter. I mean, I look at
two fills and you know, heran like third, I think third or
fourth in the comped, and thenhe ran like third and the Risen Star,
and then he won the Jeff Rubyby seven and a half lens,
(01:20:57):
and then he ran his eyeballs out. If it was for that suicidal pace
in that race and allowing Mage toclose from way out of the clouds,
you know, he probably would havewon that race with a realistic pace.
He was like set for a hugeeffort in the Derby, and he was
the most experienced runner in the field, with like eleven career starts, and
he had run three times at three. And you're not gonna tell me that
(01:21:19):
racing didn't help him. You're notgonna tell me that, Hey, if
they had decided to run him likeone fewer race or whatever at three or
you know previously, that he wouldhave been the same horse. I mean,
I think they're now. I mean, if you're out talented, then
it doesn't par sae matter as much. This is a horse that had to
keep getting faster and improved, andyou know he moved along with the racing.
(01:21:42):
But you know some of these horses, you know, to me,
it's like they it wouldn't hurt himsome of them to have another prep,
but they're just gonna be saving andsaving and savan uh. Okay, but
don't they have to earn points?Yeah, but that's not gonna be an
issue. You run like first orsecond and like your main prep. I
mean there's a lot of horses goon to the derby that just like throwing
(01:22:05):
a total clunker in the final prep. I mean it happens. Mandaloon ran
poorly and the Louisiana Derby and othershave. But generally, you know,
a horse like Mandaluoni wins the RisenStar before the Arkansas Derby, so he
had enough points it didn't matter.I mean, you have two races.
You're gonna be running in two bigpoints races, and you're gonna get enough
(01:22:25):
points well in those spots, andyou're only running in two preps because you
have the horse that you think todo that. Yeah, okay, that's
interesting, alrighty alrighty well, thanksguys. Hey, I'm off all next
week, so I won't next week. I'll be off with you all,
but i'll be back the following weekand that will be la comp Day.
(01:22:45):
A lot of opinions about on yourown, okay, a lot of opinions
about fairgrounds and such. So y'allhave a great rest of your weekend.
I always glad to have here.Yeah, alrighty well. Full court.

they shop around. That way, they can give you the best coverage at

Brian? Oh, I'm well, how are you? I beg your pardon,
I said, I'm well, howare you? Although you're sounded real
good that time. The first time, it didn't sound like it were.
Well, what's going on down inMississippi State. Well, we've had a
(01:28:13):
couple of strange collogus. We hadone horse, yeah, the pedunculared lip
homas that older horses yet that canstrangulate the gut. The horses get those
benign fatty tumors and they come offwhere the intestine meets its connected tissue and
it makes the stalk. And whetherthe stalk wraps around the intestine or enclose
(01:28:36):
drops around the stalk is still notexactly known. But when it happens,
they can strangulate the gut, andyou know, they're pretty devastating because it
tend to happen in horses fifteen yearsof age or older. But we had
a horse come in that had alive home that weighed seven and a half
pounds and it had not strangulated thegut, but the horse was and because
(01:29:00):
just the weight of that that masspulling on the on the intestine, I
had wanted offer that one was up. It's pretty big lapoma and it was
up near the stomach. The verystarted a small intent so they're able to
dip home. My out didn't haveany uh diseased bowl and you know,
(01:29:24):
did did find post off. Andthen we had another one yesterday and this
horse had I think it's been aboutthree months maybe even former of colleague.
They would have a pretty decent college. You don't have to be hospitalized a
couple of times. And then ithad done that more or less monthly.
(01:29:47):
And the horse came in yesterday andit's pretty painful and so we took it
to surgery and it's colon and fargeand testing was displaced is over on the
the right side where it shouldn't be, and it was a little bit swollen,
which you know sometimes means that maybethat colon had been in the wrong
(01:30:09):
spot for a while, and youknow that's why blood spot doesn't drain right
and they'll get some edema. Butit brought to mind a really interesting study
that they did which I went't awareof. The surgeons told me about this
as they took normal horses and theydid look at colic surgery and they implanted
(01:30:33):
some micro chips on the in thecolon and then put everything back in.
But with those microchips they could monitorwhere that colon moved around in the abumen.
Because you know, the arrangement ofhorses get terrible, like most things
in the horse, it's almost liketwo horseshoes stacked on top of each other
(01:30:56):
with not a whole lot of anythingto keep it right spot. But what
they found with those micro trips thatthey could go monitor where that colon moved
is that in normal horses that wereshowing those signs of colic, that you
could see that their colon would bein a spot that we'd consider sometimes pretty
(01:31:17):
abnormal, but then it would migrateits way back and be in the right
spot. And you know, I'veseen horses come in from colic and direct
to examine on them. You think, man, it's colon's pretty far from
where it should be. But youtreat the horse and it does all right,
and then you rerectal it and everything'sback in the right spot. But
(01:31:39):
at least I was really interesting thatin normal horses. Apparently their gut's doing
a lot more than we think itis and go in a lot of places
we didn't think it could, andespecially getting back in the right spot.
And that horse just kind of drovethat home. You know, for whatever
reason, our colon was in thewrong spot maybe for a while. As
(01:32:00):
long as it doesn't flip all theway over on itself and do a one
to eighty turn GI content contents canstill get through there, so they may
not show signs of colic because itfe materials making it through. And anyway,
she did fine, she started toeat this morning. But just a
really cool study that you know, they're in testing, moving around a lot
(01:32:24):
more than we think and going intosome really weird spots, but still finding
its way back to its right spot. I tell you what I don't know.
Let me ask you this, howmany patients do you all have?
How many and by the head atone time? Down there at Mississippi State
(01:32:45):
for very our bar isn't real bighere. I think we've got thirteen or
fifteen stalls inside, and we've gotsome covered stalls that's hopped from being bred.
We we can probably hold about thirtywhen we were filled up. But
(01:33:06):
last year we were running, wewere running pretty much capacity. There were
a couple of times we didn't haveany stalls. Luckily you didn't end up.
You know, we'd send somebody homeand and always had enough room for
patients coming in. But you know, we don't have a lot of stalls.
But the last year we were runningfuller, pretty close to it for
you know, probably half the season. I just wondered, And we see
(01:33:32):
a lot of horses here. That'sone thing I like about here. Is
another thing I liked about Auburn iswe see a lot of horses here that
are local horses. So we're like, you know, the local vet for
a lot of our clients too.So I you know, I like that
there's some really nice people here, you know, and they're, uh,
you know, we're we're there. You know, we do their vaccinations,
(01:33:55):
float their teeth and in all thatforum as well and the other the service
that goes out on the farms heretoo. But yeah, I like that
we get to see some routine workbecause I think that's good for the students.
They don't just need to see thebad and terrible stuff. And you
know, when you're in school, you think there's just no way you're ever
going to treat a colic on thefarm because you're in the hospital and you
(01:34:17):
see all these terrible collics and youdon't realize that ninety five percent or more
of them you can treat on thefarm. Yeah, let me ask you
this, what do you think aboutMichael's good timing over the old friends.
Well, you know, I know, I know he was really wanting to
get to you know, being ableto do more of the you know,
the fun stuff and you know, helping to raise money and all. And
(01:34:42):
I think that, you know,a great hire to have John Nicholson coming
in there, because you know,I'd forgotten what all he'd done until I
started reading that article, you know, at the World of Question Games.
And also, yeah, I thinkit'd be great. It's always good to
have you have some some new folksaround. And yeah, I think it
will be awesome. I can't waitto get up there and meet everybody.
(01:35:04):
And uh, and you'll keep keepeverything going forward because the farms are such
a good spot. I think we'rein great shape. We had John one
was better better than half an hourthis morning, didn't we when I did
it go an hour? Well, yeah, it was great. It's a
(01:35:24):
lot of fun. Yeah, he'sdone a whole lot. You know,
I can talk about you know,I think it's in a good spot,
you know, Kentucky horse part andand get along with running with the state
government. You know him. Youought you go from the bureaucracy to the
(01:35:50):
bureaucracy hopefully. All right, Well, let's it's good talk to you again
this morning. Coming. Let usknow when you're coming this way. Oh,
for god, Sex, we forgotto bring rest of his cheese.
Let's hurry up and eat it.Yeah, I forgot. Well, don't
forget that Have you tried it yet? In my calendar for next next Saturday?
(01:36:15):
Saturday? Bad put down for Fridaybecause he Yeah, well we're sorry.
Resume, we apologize, all right, all right, can't eat it
this way. It'll be good, all right, listen, doctor, good

it's starting to turn the snow. And what do we look forward to in
the new year would be breeding season. I love going out during breeding season
(01:47:20):
and see all those sally Van's takingall those mares to the shed. That's
the happiest spring thing I can thinkof. It's what about four weeks away
February fifteenth, what's that breeding seasonthey open? Uh? Yeah, it
is most favor about it over theshares about the fifteenth. Yeah. So
(01:47:41):
down through the years, many ofthe greatest runners going to the shed or
coming back every step on a racetrackwalked into a sally Van to win a
Derby or the Breeder's Cup and atriple crown. And I saw justified getting
off of a sally Van. Iought to be good enough for you to
think about that the next time youship your horse across the county, your
(01:48:01):
country. Sally Vance. It's atwo pronged thing. The vans are always
in tip top shape and the personbehind the wheel is an experienced driver,
and that is the winning combination. You can bet on it. It is
guaranteed. Folks at sally Van wouldn'thave it any other way. And that's
(01:48:23):
why for more than teen decades Ican't remember sally Van's the safest way to

(01:53:25):
And in that mess, in thatawful rain, that track was still
good enough. People were going outnow the rain's over there tracking what time
is it closed here? What timeis it close? And they closed the
track here at ten o'clock? Ohokay, cop five minutes? All right,
(01:53:45):
Well, let's see winners from herestarted off the year very small.
As a matter of fact, sincelast week's show, Anemia had a winner.
Uh, then John Nies had oneon the fourth yesterday or last night,
John Nies had another one. That'swhere you might have sen two knights
(01:54:06):
in the row, John's one andfifth racer turf Way yesterday, I mean
too the Yeah last night Paulo Lobohad a winner. So good. Yeah
that's that's just four. But youknow it's it's a it's a young year
(01:54:29):
so far exactly. But I say, I know mister Nis trains out here.
He claimed a two year old.I we're unhappy. The other day

(01:54:51):
off myself. So seam run back. Yeah, I don't know. That's
center those run office could run.Yep. That's of course. It's a
great place to train your horses here. I can say they're out on the
track now. Yeah after all thatrain this morning and everything. Of course
(01:55:13):
they didn't go out in the rain, although they said somebody was out there.
Well that was resty. He sawthree, saw two going down and
one on the track and it waspour down rain. Yeah, well you
were a clock. It wasn't Haroldyou said that. Damn Harold. You
think you had the day off.Yeah, but the tracks are really good
here, no, no two waysabout it. That's what made it made
(01:55:36):
it great, makes it great outhere to to train here. And if
you're looking for stalls, I wouldrecommend, of course you need to go
general manager Jim Pendegres and see ifthey've got a barn or something. But
if you just need one or twostalls like that and maybe three, I
(01:55:58):
would recommend just go barn to barnsee somebody who got stalls who want to
sublet. David knows everybody out hereand what's going on. You can yeah,
well your nice David, Yeah heknows it all. So anyway,
but it's uh, it's h VPoffices out here by the way, and
it's the best thing about the placebesides the tracks, is the quiet atmosphere.
(01:56:24):
Horses just thrive out here, andthere's always grass you can go out
and graze on. Yep, Andit's just a great place to train horses.
Sure it is plenty of places tostore hay and strong and all that
good stuff. Okay, well,I want to thank Michael and John and
(01:56:44):
John. Great to see John JohnNicholson coming on. It is great then.
