the long and growing list of major stakes winner side
by Upstart whose best bred cops are hitting the tracks

saved this last week. I guess it was five hundred thousand,

Speaker 2 (03:51):
Well, good morning man. We've got at almost the full
house here today, and jackets here and rests here.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
I'm sorry here, I'm sorry of here. I'm still not
crazy about daylight saving.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
She's been fussing, she'll fussed to fall. I did. John
John Nicholson was from old friends here, and then uh,
our good friend Sewn Washington came in. I had to
show him a picture a man of war in full stride,
and uh, what'd you think of that picture?
Speaker 4 (04:25):
Unbelievable? It is field I've never.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
Seen I know, I've shown that to a lot of
people and uh, they've all had the same You had
the same direction, John.
Speaker 4 (04:38):
I have never seen anything like that, the stride of
man of war and that photograph that captured it, don't
you don't you wish that they had the technology back
then that they do now to have captured Okay.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
Yeah, when they say it was measured at twenty eight.
Speaker 4 (04:54):
Feet, yeah, well, I've said before here at the horse Park,
the walkway up to the Man of War Memorial.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
We have a.
Speaker 4 (05:06):
Here's where his stride starts and here's where it ends.
As people walked and walked and losht and then we
compared it to the John Henry and some other fine horses.
But it was not anything now comfortable. And that particular
photograph that shows all four of his legs in the
(05:28):
air that at that time that you don't see that, No,
you don't see that. Unbelievable. Yeah, and if they had
had different technology, imagine all the wonders they would have
captured with that horse.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
Yeah, next week could next week shows be on his
birthday March twenty nine?
Speaker 4 (05:51):
March twenty nine, so he was sold in seventeen, so
he would this twenty five, he'd be one hundred and eight.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
The name who they had a big celebration at at
the horse park on his hundred's birthday. You weren't here
for that, No, No, I wasn't that. They invited me
to speak. I never must say.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
That's where we met Will Harberts family. We met a
lot of his family was out there for that, and
we met a whole bunch of them that was.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
There, And I had. I had got to know mister
Harbard pretty well. And uh, my dad when I first
went over and when I was a little kid, said
you keep your keep your mouth shut. It's mister Harbard
to you, and if you pay attention, you'll learn something.
(06:50):
Well I did the first too. I don't know how
much I learned, but anyway, Yeah, but his family, he
was kind of upset for the way the pressure to
you know, how he talked when he but he was
a showman. His dialect was not nearly as you know,
(07:12):
as prominent as it was when he was just talking
to you, you know, because.
Speaker 4 (07:21):
So people what they wanted.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
I guess, yeah, I guess it was. And he could
tell a good tale, ye, well.
Speaker 5 (07:29):
And he became famous as a result of it.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
Yeah, when that.
Speaker 4 (07:33):
Picture of him and something like Time magazine or something,
he was he was all over them. He was well
known as as man of War's buddy.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
That was an old Collier's callers. And I used to
have that that that picture that magazine and I came
cannot find it. It was in what is Patrick's bedroom
now was Patrick abroad? Now we moved all this stuff
as soon as he did.
Speaker 5 (08:03):
They moved with that before all.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
That is that right? And you don't know where it is?
Speaker 2 (08:11):
I have no, don't have the fun.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
There's a bunch of stuff in there.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
Some day I look for it and there was a
picture of me holding the old here, the one at
the paddick over it and the farm where we were,
well we were training. Hope, hope, hopeful, hope, well hope. Well,
(08:38):
now what was the name of that farm?
Speaker 1 (08:41):
Homeward Homewood?
Speaker 2 (08:42):
Yeah, great name, isn't not a good name? Oh?
Speaker 1 (08:46):
Yeah, what's the farm? Hope of the old name for Paris?
Speaker 2 (08:53):
Hope? It was there? But I thought that was a
good Homewood. I thought it was a great name.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
Not a great name. That it sound.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
Yeah, we bought that a little place. We've got that there.
It was twenty two, twenty two and a bakers Jackie
says that he won't name it. I said, we'll name
it after the people that holding the mortgage.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
That third bank.
Speaker 4 (09:27):
First, the first National farm.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
Well, what's going on over your way?
Speaker 4 (09:34):
Well? This I was just thinking this morning, this is
the kind of this beginning of Spring's I guess the
first show since the spring officially came about and we
died a lot, a lot of things going on coming
up this spring and this fall with our friends fundraisers.
Speaker 5 (09:54):
And I didn't appreciate.
Speaker 4 (09:56):
That when I when I got there a year ago,
when when Michael asked me to help out with things there.
But there's like five or six fundraisers that are for
old friends in the spring and now a couple of
new ones in the fall.
Speaker 5 (10:12):
One that Michael particularly likes.
Speaker 4 (10:14):
And you don't understand why is that Total Wine the
store of the Spirit Store. And on April nineteenth, Saturday,
April nineteenth, they pretty much dedicate the whole day to
old friends. And when you go and buy whatever libation
or concoction or spirit you.
Speaker 5 (10:35):
Part of that goes to old friends.
Speaker 1 (10:38):
And okay, what's the date on that again?
Speaker 4 (10:40):
April nineteenth at Total Wine, and I believe that's out.
Isn't that out Hamburger?
Speaker 2 (10:46):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (10:47):
Out at Hamburg?
Speaker 4 (10:49):
Okay, out of Patrick's Little's a little your hump from
ground too?
Speaker 2 (10:55):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (10:57):
Okay.
Speaker 4 (10:58):
Then on Derby Eve there is Blue Jeans, Boots and
Bulls at the Bluegrass Stockyards over there by the horse
park by the Interstate there, which is a fantastic facility,
marvelous facility and.
Speaker 5 (11:15):
Press the facility you go on tours.
Speaker 4 (11:17):
At day take tours there Monday for tours and I
go there and eating just to I just go and
eat because people from the horse park come over. It's
a cattle you know, marketplace and auction place. But all
the horse people come over there too from the horse
park and just from around you'll know somebody in there.
(11:39):
But they have a derby party derby e party with
a band and a calcutta and a live auction and
silent auction. And the only bad part is you have
to suffer through yours truly is the MC. But that
raises money for old friends as well as UK Hospital
(11:59):
and the a couple other good good another rescue horse
rescue operation that's really good.
Speaker 2 (12:07):
And Burger what.
Speaker 4 (12:09):
It's blue jeans, boots and bulls. Derby a party Okay.
Then the retirement home Preston Green of Hamburg at Hamburg,
which uh and you'd probably know this, but this is
a bit of trivia. It's a wonderful retirement home. They
do a thing remember the horses that the horses that
(12:32):
the artists would paint on and that was optioned off
years ago.
Speaker 5 (12:37):
Well, Preston Green does a miniature version of that.
Speaker 4 (12:40):
They have the smaller, you know, horses that you put
on your table or your desk, and they do the
same thing. They decorate them and they're really cool and
they auction them off and old friends as the recipient
of that. But I learned Preston Green Retirement Home is
named because Preston Madden had his putting green right there
(13:02):
where the place was built. We were trying to think
of the name of it, and said, well, you know
this was where Preston's Green was, so we'll call it
Preston Green. So funny, that's the Madden's and Hamburg and
everything has deep tentacles.
Speaker 2 (13:18):
He gave me a tour of then while they were
building it, Preston did. We were driving me around and
naming it communicate and then he said, on this particular street,
he says, this is where man war meets Sir Barton again.
Speaker 4 (13:34):
Yeah, yeah, I was just thinking about that rivalry this morning.
But then in addition to that, on April twenty ninth,
which is Derby Weak, this is kind of cool. Brushes
and bronze aren't exhibited at the Thirdbred Society in Louisville,
(13:55):
which this year features Lisa Palombo's rendering King of Silver Charm.
Speaker 5 (14:01):
Oh, okay, And it is gorgeous.
Speaker 4 (14:04):
It's a head it's a like a headshot and it
really is striking. And it's a forty forty by thirty
beautiful frame painting and they're going to auction that off.
I think it will feature a lot of Lisa's work.
You know, she is the official artist of Secretariat of
Secretariat dot com and you know missus Chennery and all that,
(14:27):
she's the she's the design need to do it Secretariat art.
But she did Silver Charm and there's gonna be a
percentage of proceeds from that. It goes to Old Friends.
And then she's going to produce prints and the Prince
of Silver Charm, and proceeds of that will go to
(14:48):
Old Friend.
Speaker 1 (14:49):
Now it's just going to be in Louisville.
Speaker 4 (14:51):
This is in Louisville, Okay.
Speaker 5 (14:52):
And as we go through the spring, I'll give you the.
Speaker 4 (14:56):
Y keep me yeah form. Then on Sunday after Derby
is the big, the big winding, the homecoming. We call
it Homecoming Sunday after Derby at Old Friends.
Speaker 5 (15:09):
And it's it's just let your hair down.
Speaker 4 (15:12):
After all the festivities of the Derby. Robert Clark our
friend will have we'll have overnight been.
Speaker 5 (15:20):
Working on the painting of the finish of the derby.
Speaker 4 (15:24):
Oh you know, and who knows what that's going to be.
And he stays up all night, starts to work on it,
starts to get the drawing, and then finishes the painting
in front of everyone right there, and it is auctioned
off right there. The benefits.
Speaker 1 (15:41):
Yeah, his his work is really unique.
Speaker 4 (15:45):
It's really striking and very the colors are very poignant
of the of the finish of the race, and so
each one is unique and historic. So and then we
got you know, bluegrass bands and lots of good food,
and you get to stay all to uh stay after derby.
Speaker 2 (16:02):
You pay our.
Speaker 4 (16:03):
Homage to Silver Charm, you pay your homage to I'll
have Another and the Big Brown and then the number
of horses who raced in the.
Speaker 1 (16:11):
Derby that didn't want Oh yeah, I see. Okay, that's
a good one.
Speaker 4 (16:15):
And here's one that we'll talk about over the summer.
Ashton Grove, the retirement community where we have a farm
in Georgetown, is throwing for us a great, uh great
event for.
Speaker 5 (16:28):
The benefit of old friends.
Speaker 4 (16:30):
And it is the roast and toast of Michael blowing. Oh,
and that ought to be that ought to be a
special night. That's going to be at Ashton Grove and
we'll be selling tickets to that, and I'll have more
information on that. You're going to get a tent, going
to get a tent. Oh wow, they got a nice
big galea room.
Speaker 1 (16:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (16:51):
And then then they'll extend it back to the back
back porch of the place, which is where the horses are,
which is the the acres of the old friend's horses.
And we're gonna roast Michael.
Speaker 1 (17:05):
Oh, that's great.
Speaker 4 (17:06):
Well, we'll have people lined up for.
Speaker 1 (17:10):
Oh, yeah, I know some good ones.
Speaker 2 (17:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (17:12):
I mean it's roasting toast. But I think there's gonna
be more roasting. There'll be plenty of toasting.
Speaker 1 (17:18):
Oh, we can make a big deal out of We
got him made the Kentucky Colonel. Did you know that?
We got that done? And you could get up there
and say all the people we had to bribe and
the stuff we had to lie about, no lies, remember that.
Speaker 2 (17:38):
And made sure we didn't introduce him.
Speaker 1 (17:40):
Yeah, we got that and gave it to him at
their house. Remember, I had to stand up on a
chair or something. I can't remember, but that's a funny
one because you can make up all kind of lies about.
Speaker 4 (17:54):
Okay, we'll get ready, you got you guys are on
the agenda, on the dast for that. But that's gonna
be a good thing too, and that's raising money for
old princes. So we're gonna have a big, big spring
and a big year. A lot of.
Speaker 1 (18:08):
Whose idea was that? Because that's funny, you know, a
lot of stuff. Because Michael's got such a good sense
of humor, and when they're that kind of personality, you
can really get them.
Speaker 4 (18:19):
Yes, yeah, oh, and there's you know, and there's gonna
be like the two of you, but there's gonna be
some pretty notable people in this business that are gonna
want that are going to weigh in on this. Yeah,
I don't even have to. You just use your imagination
of the people that have retired their horses there, Yeah,
(18:39):
that are and Michael is you're right, he's just they
don't want to say easy fodder. But there's a lot
of material there working.
Speaker 1 (18:48):
Oh yeah, because he's always telling funny things.
Speaker 4 (18:52):
Yeah, yeah, allegedly there might be one or two that
are true.
Speaker 2 (18:55):
We have and.
Speaker 4 (18:56):
Uh, but yeah, we're gonna have a lot of fun.
That was, you know, have a great relationship with ash
Ashton Grove and they they have figured out, to their
credit that how uplifting these horses are for that retirement community.
Now y you know, Ashton Grove is not is not
a you know, it's not a nursing home. It's a
community of you know, generally older folks, and but it's
(19:21):
a it's a very happy place, but it's much happier
because of the horses. You're there and you know that,
and so they realize, they realize that. And also I
think that's a model for what we can do throughout
the country. And I've talked to our old friend's family
about that. This is this is what we need to
replicate anywhere there's a need for retired Thordbred horses. And
(19:45):
so we're working on that.
Speaker 1 (19:47):
So now, when when you go down Edar Yes and
you turn left to go in where the boys are
on the old friends party, and you go down about
fifty feet and you turn right to get into Ashton.
Speaker 4 (20:01):
Grove, that's that's right.
Speaker 1 (20:02):
That's a gorgeous barn they've got.
Speaker 4 (20:05):
It is a gorgeous fun Bev and John Passarello got
that built and they are Californians who love thoroughbread racing.
Is one of the original residents at Ashton Rove and
a name of the and Bab is still there. We
lost John, but Babb is still there. She's my dear
friend and she is on the board of old Friends,
(20:25):
and she is the stick that stirs the drink from
there you go of the horses there, but really as
a whole facility, she's a pistol, very very smart and fun.
We go to lunch every month and so I can
listen to the things.
Speaker 1 (20:43):
I need to be done. How many acres she got
on that side of the road.
Speaker 4 (20:48):
On the Ashton Grove side.
Speaker 1 (20:50):
Yeah, about forty Yeah, Yeah, it's nice side, pretty one pad.
Speaker 4 (20:55):
That's the little the floodplain problem that we don't used.
Speaker 2 (21:00):
But I can't.
Speaker 4 (21:02):
Yeah we can't. You know, we can when it's drive
and but it's beautifully laid out.
Speaker 1 (21:07):
It is. That's what I'm you know.
Speaker 2 (21:09):
And then and.
Speaker 4 (21:10):
That's you're right. It's a beautiful barn there and it
just drifts into our new farm at Hillcrest right across
the road. And I mean you can stand at a
certain place on the hill at hill at Hillcrest, the
crest of the hill and you see the Hillcrest Farm
and it drips right into the Ashton Grove and the
beautiful the architecture is really nice.
Speaker 1 (21:31):
Yeah, it really is. I'm it's very impressive.
Speaker 4 (21:34):
Yeah, and it's just it's very very uplifting and kind
of inspiring. So we got about and you know, through
the year, two horses, Major and Toby and Major and Lici.
Speaker 2 (21:49):
To Gen and.
Speaker 4 (21:53):
Eligible.
Speaker 5 (21:54):
So you're out there all the time.
Speaker 4 (21:56):
You see that we got twenty five horses at Hillcrest
and about twenty five or thirty between twenty five and
thirty at Ashton Grove.
Speaker 1 (22:04):
Oh you have them. That is that the other Okay,
I'm I'm on at her and I'm looking over there
at that beautiful farm. What's on the other side of that?
Is that where the people live on the other side
of that barn? Is that how it's played out?
Speaker 2 (22:21):
Yes?
Speaker 4 (22:21):
And they have cottages yeah.
Speaker 5 (22:23):
So you know in houses, then apartments.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
Yeah, in there and then.
Speaker 4 (22:27):
Inside you know inside where the apartments and it's they've
got a bar and a gym.
Speaker 1 (22:33):
And hot dog theater.
Speaker 4 (22:35):
It's a great place.
Speaker 1 (22:37):
Yeah, it really looks nice. I just didn't I.
Speaker 2 (22:39):
Don't frequently either one anymore.
Speaker 5 (22:41):
Yeah, you don't go to the gym or the bar.
Speaker 2 (22:46):
Or the nother one.
Speaker 1 (22:48):
That's funny.
Speaker 4 (22:49):
But but what's a great relationship? And wherever, wherever there
are horses and you can bring people the people, the
people get better and the horses get better. And that's
that's what we want.
Speaker 1 (23:00):
And they've got how many over there?
Speaker 4 (23:02):
Got about between twenty five and thirty Yeah, I'm do
a little interchange, but all together on those two farms,
probably about fifty five boys.
Speaker 1 (23:10):
That's nice. That's really simper we have.
Speaker 4 (23:13):
We just turned our report into TAA, the Third Bread
After Care Allowance, the Great Accreditation Organization, and you know
we have to do a manual request to be accredited
and then to get some funding from them. And as
we speak yesterday we had two hundred and ninety seven
Third Red horses that we're responsible for, and one Welsh
(23:35):
pony named Little Silver Charm that lives in Michael's yard.
They had to report him. You see him shouting. We're
not exactly sure, but he's at least thirty seven years old.
We were doing the math from when Michael rescued him.
Two goats and four chickens that.
Speaker 6 (23:56):
Were that were hurted off to the bat in back place,
and he.
Speaker 5 (24:00):
He said, I'll give you one hundred dollars for all
of them.
Speaker 4 (24:02):
And I found he got that Little Silver Charm. We
were at lunch at Midway the other day and he
was telling me the story when Michael first came to
Kentucky lived in Midway and he and he had just
kept his Little Silver Charms like kind of like a dog.
He went in the house and stayed in the yard,
and when he when Michael go to town, he would just
take Little Silver Charm down, you know, down main Street
(24:24):
of Midway. Well, somebody objected, oh you kidnaps. Yeah, it
was somebody who who had chickens in their yard and
lived in the city limits. And that was frowned upon.
And so he got mad and said, if I can't
have my chickens, I don't want that other fellow running
around here with that purse. And and so there was
(24:46):
a big stink about it. And Penny channering came and Michael,
Penny Channery and Little Silver Charm went door to door
and got a petition to take to the city council
to allow Little Silver Charm to be on the streets
and he won. He won, He took him in there
and won the vote. And uh and you know, one
(25:07):
of the day.
Speaker 2 (25:07):
Now and with him after that, and then the.
Speaker 5 (25:11):
Same little Silver Charm holds court.
Speaker 4 (25:12):
Every day at all the friends, the same the same guy.
That's what's going on in my world.
Speaker 1 (25:18):
They were in he would Silver Charm was in their
backyard and they had a wooden you know, like a
deck sort of, and he'd go up to the door,
the patio door and pump, pump, pump pump, you know,
get in.
Speaker 4 (25:36):
He goes in.
Speaker 5 (25:36):
He gets ginger snaps every every day.
Speaker 4 (25:39):
That's his that's his thing. And when Michael says ginger snaps,
he even though he'll he'll, he doesn't gallop anymore, but
he mopes into the right onto Michael's deck and up
to the door, and that he in his living room
and gets his ginger snaps every day every day.
Speaker 1 (25:58):
Well, I finally found speaking of what they eat. I
went to tractor supply. That's where you get missus pastures.
So in the world. Oh so they were showing me
where they were in tractor supply, and they were kind
of busy in the la there they are and I
grabbed two sacks and went on. I got a sack
(26:21):
of the regular and a sack made with sweet potatoes.
Speaker 4 (26:26):
Oh really, yeah, I've I've heard about this.
Speaker 1 (26:30):
Yes, I'll tell you what. They're in the back of
my car and I will give you the sweet potato oncet.
See if anybody likes them, and uh, there you are.
Speaker 2 (26:39):
I would would I to eat them?
Speaker 1 (26:42):

remember when it was real windy and terrible and cold
and horrible.
Speaker 5 (26:50):
The gates were locked.
Speaker 1 (26:52):
Ah, every farm down that road had those gateswalks because
of the wind. Yeah, I mean so we just we
could see them from the road, you know, and they
were down their graves and they weren't paying attention to
the wind, so you know, we can tell they're fine.
But I thought that was pretty interesting. I'll give you
a sack.
Speaker 4 (27:12):
I would love that.
Speaker 5 (27:13):
It's the It is the currency of old friends.

they were really good with silver charm.
Speaker 5 (27:23):
You know, he's lost all his teeth.
Speaker 4 (27:25):
And so we would get to missus pastors and Michael
would get a hammer out and mush them up for
in his garage for silver charment. And now now they
send them, they send the crimes in a bag.
Speaker 1 (27:38):
Yeah in that cool. They get the cron that's neat.
Speaker 4 (27:42):
That very nice.
Speaker 1 (27:44):
But I've got them in the back seat of the car. Saw,
I give you that sack. I'll take a couple out
for the boys, and then you take the sack and
see who else likes.

If you can get out and at them in all

People will spend a half a day with you at all,
Oh my god, all the person and I think we
can just done. I think it'd be awesome to have you.

sell out within an hour.
Speaker 1 (28:45):
Well, if you want us to, we will.
Speaker 4 (28:47):
I can't believe.
Speaker 1 (28:49):
Sure we do, wouldn't we have if we can? If
we can, that's the thing. Yeah, d but take some planning. Yeah,
because we've got Betsy has had somebody to stay home
with her.
Speaker 4 (29:03):
Well, we can do it in the fall or something.
And and do you think we could get Ursula to
come out of the ship. We're gonna get him come out.
He's gonna come here. That ain't gonna be no problem.
Speaker 2 (29:18):

and a big aircraft was coming on and the sun
(33:07):
sun was and then I looked to the to the
left to Ironworks and Castleton, and of course now it's
Spy Coast, which is now gorgeous. But a drive down
that section of Ironworks Pike is that is just a

That's where they got today. That's very clever. I love
clever names. Okay, sorry, but in didn't I?
Speaker 2 (37:57):
Yeah, So what else is new?
Speaker 1 (38:01):
You know?
Speaker 4 (38:01):
You mentioned Stone Street there, and I had the opportunity
to be with my friend Charles Campbell, who's the brood
mayor manager there, just and well that's another great another great.
Speaker 2 (38:14):
Farm, a lot of runners, good.
Speaker 4 (38:18):
Ones, absolutely special. It's a special they do special treatment.
And you're right. And I started thinking about Rachel Alexander,
and then I started thinking about Nada because uh, I
got for the first time in my life about six
weeks ago, I got to meet Zena and I just
(38:41):
think of what a remarkable I was thinking about rivalries
this morning, and we were talking before the show about
Sir Barton and man War and you know some of
these great you know rivalries or horses you associated as
racing against you know another sea biscuit and war, adding
on and all that. But then I don't you know,
Rachel alexand Zenyatta never raced against each other. But but
(39:03):
there's there are the monuments and great mayors of a
of an era and it's kind of Somebody told me,
he said, you know, you're eating in one camp or
the other, And I said, I kind of like them both.
And way you got, you know, you're kind of one
or the other.
Speaker 2 (39:18):
Was Daniela got the championship Philly that year?

I mean she was one of those that do that
(39:42):
little dance going to the racetrack. Remember that.
Speaker 4 (39:44):
I love Rachel.
Speaker 2 (39:46):

Speaker 4 (39:47):
Well, and then you mentioned Curland curling was stoled at
our Farmer Hillcrest.
Speaker 2 (39:53):

Speaker 1 (39:58):
Yeah, times of change.
Speaker 2 (40:02):
A little dropping class there, but otherwise just a little well,
they didn't have an opportunity because they were buildings.
Speaker 1 (40:12):
What it was.
Speaker 4 (40:13):
I love them just the same.
Speaker 2 (40:15):
I'm still got another commercial, can go for it.
Speaker 1 (40:17):
I just had to throw that out there.
Speaker 2 (40:19):
Interview. Got it. Got to take care of the clave
Ward Agency since they founded the year I was born,
many moons ago. I missed the James clay Ward, who
I happened to meet many moons ago. Anyway, and they've
been providing equine insurance for ninety it will be ninety
(40:42):
four years, as may I know, because it's when I
was born in nineteen thirty one, so they they were.
They founded that right in the middle of the UH depression, depression,
and I'm a depression baby, still depressed. But anyway, anywhere
(41:09):
they were successful. I haven't been that successful. But they
were good because they gave great service and they knew
the horsemen's inside it out. And those qualities are carried
on right as we speak, because actually, if it pertains
to the third bid, they're in a position to supply
the best coverage at the best price available. They're really
(41:30):
nice people. That's Zeck Parish and Bruce Isaacs, a couple
of real good guys. Let me give you the phone number.

seven and eighteen sixty one is when the Civil War started.
So there you go. So you might want to ask
about the services available over the Inn Creek Indian Creek
Beautiful Farm. They have raised, boarded, and sold men in
the world's finest thirdbreds down through the years. They specialize
(42:13):
in boarding horses Thoroughbreds of course, and prepping horses for

side and all that good stuff?
Speaker 7 (43:58):
The name on the side and uh, Now, last year
I took six coach buses out there and six, got
six colors.

Speaker 2 (52:57):
We're going to call in with some windows today. It's
a taste.
Speaker 1 (53:00):
They ask people questions they might not know the answer
and embarrass them. And he knows that. Every time he
just starts singing it right through post position.
Speaker 2 (53:11):
He has called in, Oh good and given some of
his selections to Ressie or if Reshie can find him
resh he probably lost him. He went to his favorite prober.
He threw him the paper's way after he called up
placing his bets.
Speaker 1 (53:29):
That's what I said, one to his favorite booking. Got
that done?
Speaker 2 (53:32):
Well, anyway, let me catch up because we're behind.
Speaker 1 (53:35):
Oh, we are behind.
Speaker 2 (53:36):
Oh I'll tell you what are we spendthrift? Spendthrift and
hill Parker and we got to take care of both
of those people.
Speaker 1 (53:43):
Yeah, great guy.
Speaker 2 (53:45):
Well. The Grade three and fifty thound dollars Whitmore Steaks
run last Saturday, the O'klahoen was won by Booth coach
from the first cup by Matoli. Booth lit all the
way to win by two and a quarter links posting
a one O seven buyer and a display of the
speed that carried the Mattoli to an eclipse ward of
Champion sprinter Mattoli, who's sired ten stakes winners for of
(54:07):
them Greatest States winners in nineteen and won a place
in stakes in his first two cops. Mattoli won the
Grade one Breeders' Cup Sprint to Grade one Metropolitan, the
Grade one four Gold, the Grade one Churchill Downstakes, won
ten stakes and fourteen career starts. Was never out of
the money and earned three million, one hundred and four thousand,
eight hundred and ten dollars. He was to put it
(54:28):
mildly brilliant, and he's passing it on another stakes. Last Saturday,
fondly of three old Phillippa, Upstart remained undefeated to win
the two hundred fifty thousan dollars Virginia Oaks at Colonial
Downs and gained some fifty points total birth in the
Grade one Kentucky Oaks, the son of Upstart, the best
son of Upstart, a multiple Greatest States winner over a million,
(54:48):
seven hundred and thirty two thousand from the Fame AP
and the srideline is xand On, a Grade one stakes
winner two million, two hundred thousand dollars also stands at
spend three Farmers and On won a Grade one Bluegrass
one of Grade two Woodward placed in a Grade one
Kentucky Derby, Grade one, Travers, Grade one, Whitney Grade one,
Metropolitan Grade one Pennsylvania, the Grade two Visits Star and
(55:10):
the Grade three Westchester. He was competitive at the highest
level and he's a superb individual. Grand looking horse. Zandan's
first solds are rither than is here, and they too
are outstanding. So to inspect Xandan, I'm a Toli. It's
called There's a Brian and Mark and Daniel at eight, five, nine, two, nine,
fours years here thirty in the spensthrift is the website
(55:33):
Spenscriff farm dot com.
Speaker 1 (55:36):
All right, let's talk about Hill Parker, Hill Parker. There's
dual personality. People's most people were good at one thing.
Hell's good at two.
Speaker 2 (55:46):
For crying out, I'm still looking for one.
Speaker 1 (55:50):
Oh, don't worry about it.
Speaker 2 (55:54):
Time's running out. The hell with it.
Speaker 1 (55:58):
Anyway, Hill Hell's a great guy. He is a real
estate agent. He's been in relatate forever. He's a member
of all those fancy associations of the National of the
Credited Senior Graduate Life and so on and so forth.
(56:18):
He's got that locked up. But the other part that
makes Hill a specialist is he's, for instance, a licensed
horse trainer in eleven States, years of experience of then horses, stowbruds, jumpers,
steeple chasing, which means he's a little crazy, and fox
hunters and so on and so forth. He really knows
(56:40):
his stuff. It's really interesting. When Ursa was clocking, we'd
see him pull up with a two horse and take
two out and tie him to the side of the
of the rig, you know, yeah, and I'd tack one
up and breathed it himself. Come back, we tie it up,
(57:02):
and you know, I mean he knows what he's talking about.
And what makes this really interesting with Hill is if
you are interested in any kind of property to do
with horse farm, uh, you know, there's a million things
to know and a million things to do, and he's
the guy that knows. He knows where to put a
(57:24):
barn and where you know, ask all the rest right
questions like are you going to breed, are you going
to breed to sell? Are you going to breed the race?
Are you going to train? Are you blah blah blah
blah blah, And I mean if you ain't done it,
you don't know it. And that's a solid I never
I think you could probably fake being a plumber. There's
(57:46):
no way you can think. Of course, you just can't.
Speaker 4 (57:49):
Ted Bassett, Mister Bassett once said to me, he said,
for for every hundred people they claim to be a horseman, yeah,
there's really only about one that truly.
Speaker 2 (57:58):
Is the truth.
Speaker 1 (57:59):
Would yes, I mean he said, yeah, he really really is. So,
I mean I always say, you know, you put a
barn over there, it doesn't belong there. You're gonna have
to walk lead the brood mayre down in front of
what earlin colts, you know that kind of stuff. Anyway,
he's really really good, and it's really nice, and he
(58:23):
never runs out of gas. I mean, he's going all
the time and a super nice guy. Trust him with anything, Paris.
Aren't you going to give his phone number and stuff
like you do?
Speaker 2 (58:37):
I'm trying to figure it out here, Okay, here the
phone number is.
Speaker 4 (58:44):
You sell number eight five.
Speaker 2 (58:46):
Nine six year eight eight zero three nine. And the website,
which is a great website by the way, it's it's
Legs horse Farms dot com. He and Reagan Parker, and
I tell you it isn't about the nicest people. You
don't want to make great and we owe the favors
and we will never be able to repay him back.
But yeah, so once again, his his cell phone number
(59:10):
is selection the number of six zero eight eight oh
three nine.
Speaker 3 (59:18):
Now back to the Thoroughbred Training Center and ursul ellis.
Speaker 2 (59:23):
Okay, let me read this, do this, and do that well.
Last Saturday Colonial Downs, the two hundred and fifty fine
dollars Virginia Oaks was one by Finally, a three old
Phillip upstart by Burdensey Jones, last year's leading breeder of
(59:43):
twenty twenty four stakes winners, with twenty all of them
raised on aird Restud, which was founded, of course by
burden Sy Jones. Finally's two for two one of the
first start on February twenty five at Tampa Bay then
ship to Colonial Downs in one of Virginia Oaks gaining
fifty points total birth and the Grade one Kentucky Oaks.
So good luck to owners Eclipse Third Bred Partners and
(01:00:06):
trainer Graham Brown. Graham Motion excuse me see John's a
long and going list of major stakes winner side by
upstart whose best bread crops are hitting the tracks this year.
Three were offered. Incidentally, my first crop at Florida just
recently and they sold for five hundred thousand, three hundred
and seventy five thousand and two hundred and twenty thoven
(01:00:28):
Xan Dana Starts leading money winner with earnings of two million,
two hundred thousand dollars with bread by burd and see
Jones ZANDN won a great one bluegrass out of Keenan
won a place in eleven stakes all graded sixth grade one,
including the Kentucky derby another millionaire. But Upstart and Trademark
is a graded stakes winner of over a million, one
hundred and thirty eight thousand. Then there is graded stakes
(01:00:51):
winner Kathleen Oh Graded stakes winning prerequds that graded stakes
winner mass Quarade went of over nine hundred and twenty
seven thousand, Furious One over six hundred and twelve thousand,
kaleig Riostro over five hundred and forty two thousand. Believe me,
that's just scratching the surface. And remember Upstart was a
(01:01:11):
runner himself the stakes winn of a million, seven hundred
and thirty two thousand, seven hundred and eighty dollars. Want
to place in ten stakes nine graded sixth grade one
competed at the highest level and size runners to compete
at the highest level with his best cops hitting the
tracks this year, So time is perfect right now to
book a mayor. It's called Shannon ncall at eight five nine,
(01:01:33):
eight seven, three seventy two seventy and the website is
erdreystuod dot com. Well, normally we have James Scully on
with YEA.
Speaker 1 (01:01:43):
And he always helps us say hi to Betsy.
Speaker 2 (01:01:46):
Okay, I Betsy, Betsy, anyway, we'll do that in his absence,
I miss him. He called in and gave us some
selections here and my man over here wrote some notes
down and I can't quite decipher these damn notes. And
(01:02:09):
I asked him to announce him, and he said he
wasn't about to talk on the radio, although he's been
over there working keeping us on for how many years?
How many have been with usburg eighteen years?
Speaker 1 (01:02:24):
You talk about patients.
Speaker 2 (01:02:27):
Okay, here's the one with the Jeff Ruby stakes at
Turfway Big Field thirteen. He picked a horse name Maximum Promise,
who is number ten by Maximum Security. Maximum Security of
course stands down at at Ashford. Still he's a horse
he got disqualified from the Derby.
Speaker 4 (01:02:49):
Oh that's right. Yeah, oh yeah, I'm writing this down.
Speaker 2 (01:02:53):
I think that's right. But anyway, and I don't know
what odds are on that us what that said? Okay,
and the Louisiana Derby, I think he gave me that one.
Let me find the Louisiana Derby entries here somewhere, No
(01:03:16):
here it is oh excuse me, instant reunion, instant replay. Okay,
that's what I just gave you. That's that was the
Louisiana Maximum Are both those horses by Maximum Security? Now
(01:03:39):
see I've screwed this up. The Louisiana Derby is instant
replay by Maximum Security. That's the Louisiana Derby. Now let
me go to the Jeff Ruby Steaks. So this over
my shoulder. There we go. Well, no, I'm maximum prom
(01:04:00):
must is by Maximus is also by Maximus Security.
Speaker 4 (01:04:06):
Really, that's gonna be a good day for Maximum Security.
Speaker 2 (01:04:09):
James must own a share James muston was not a
good day. James must own a share in that orse
horse was a runner. He went abroad, you know, and
and they disqualified him over there because the trainer, remember that.
Speaker 4 (01:04:30):
The one one a big country house was the country house.
Speaker 1 (01:04:34):
It was supposed to.
Speaker 2 (01:04:34):
Been a no country house was uh once got to
win that day that they took him down, took him down, Yeah,
country house. Country house is a Darby Dan Okay.
Speaker 4 (01:04:45):
Well it maximum Security one.
Speaker 7 (01:04:48):
And then Flying Front I think was on the country House.
But it's supposed have been a poll Wallerty kind of
came over from Oland.
Speaker 2 (01:04:55):
Yeah there was. There was a foul he came down. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
it was pretty flavorant, well as I remember a couple
of horses almost went down. Yeah, there was. I forget
that was that wheel to win in that race too?
I don't know anyway, it was some bread by Cleveland
(01:05:21):
farmer believe, but anyway, but then they sent the horse
Maximum Security over to run in one of those big
races at Dubai or something like that, and the trainer
had gotten in part in trouble for some of his
horses came up positive remember that.
Speaker 5 (01:05:41):
Yeah, that's coming on.
Speaker 2 (01:05:42):
And they weren't gonna pay pay that. You know, he
had a wind popped. Like three million dollars was supposed
to come to him, and I think they ended up
finally paying it because they had tested the horse there
and they came up negative. But you know the trainer
been called before.
Speaker 4 (01:06:01):
I don't know what the horse's fall.
Speaker 2 (01:06:04):
Well know well that I've confused everybody else like myself.
We'll continue on talk about the Bloodstock Research Information Services.
That's who James worked for. Great outfit. We're in the process.
We just switched over. Can I talk about this year?
(01:06:28):
Okay to what what.
Speaker 4 (01:06:30):
The call careful?
Speaker 2 (01:06:31):
We don't want to get sued? Okay, spectrum. Yeah, and
we're switching over from us some from I guess who
whoever it was. We were headed and uh and for
a while while they were switching, I couldn't get internet
(01:06:52):
and I needed that stuff, you know, like you're needing air.
Speaker 4 (01:06:58):
That's the way it is live.
Speaker 2 (01:07:00):
It was something like that. Yeah, bloodsuck Research is it's
they're super nice, nice people.
Speaker 1 (01:07:09):
Can't do without a period.
Speaker 2 (01:07:11):
Cannot do that. We couldn't do a show with Adam,
so I was sweating BB's while they they didn't have
it in it.
Speaker 4 (01:07:17):
Well, I mean the fact that they've got James, Yeah,
a lot about him. Yeah, I mean because he you know,
he he is mister information.
Speaker 2 (01:07:25):
Oh yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:07:26):
And the fact that they said, well you know this
is the guy we want.
Speaker 2 (01:07:30):
I have never met anybody in my life and can
with a total recall about races that were several years ago.
Speaker 5 (01:07:40):
Go back to the set. Well he go back to
the forties.
Speaker 4 (01:07:43):
Yeah, you getting thought about whirl Away and you know,
and what he did and didn't do, and and uh,
you all had an interesting debate on the relative merits
of matter war versus citation one day.
Speaker 2 (01:07:57):
It was that's because he came anywhere in the citation.
Speaker 5 (01:08:01):
Sean got a little heated.
Speaker 1 (01:08:06):
When we were done.
Speaker 7 (01:08:07):
He got up, he was.
Speaker 2 (01:08:08):
Fine, I didn't hit it.
Speaker 5 (01:08:11):
So who worked about miss?
Speaker 4 (01:08:13):
I was swamps in Nashville. There we go, swapp picky time.
Speaker 2 (01:08:18):
Right, Yeah, yeah, I have there. I got discharged from
the service. And uh they were going to have that
match race which said never should have put swaps in
by the.
Speaker 4 (01:08:30):
Way, Wow, was he just not ready for it?
Speaker 2 (01:08:33):
Oh well he was lame. They worked, They were up
with him all night up at Arlington Park and they
were going to scratch and the management upper so please
don't do it. So they ran him and he was
not within ten links aviol that he should have been
a measure of eat him. But the best horse went
(01:08:57):
on Derby Day. Let's put it that way.
Speaker 7 (01:09:00):
That's right, Okay.
Speaker 2 (01:09:01):
I saw that horse set a world record, and I
think it was it. It was either the old Hollywood
Parker at Santa Nta. And he went by. He was
laying by third. They hit the far turn and he
went by, and longer than it was on the winter. Yeah,
(01:09:26):
he was, Uh, he was on a horse or in second. Yeah.
And after the race he came storming out and he says,
that damn horse went by me with his mouth wide open.
Speaker 1 (01:09:39):
A hole.
Speaker 4 (01:09:42):
But did you know Clim Brooks I spent prison.
Speaker 2 (01:09:48):
Yeah, yeah, I knew him.
Speaker 4 (01:09:49):
You knew him?
Speaker 2 (01:09:50):
Were calling him Brooksy, didn't we? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:09:52):
Brooks?
Speaker 7 (01:09:52):
Hey, I didn't.
Speaker 4 (01:09:52):
I never did meet him, but did you pretty good
guy was well he.
Speaker 2 (01:09:56):
Had Nague over there. Yeah, of course they had both
horses and ended up with both of them over there. Yeah.
Swaps too, end of his career. He went. He had
been a Darby Dan.
Speaker 4 (01:10:09):
And Swaps in Nashville, Spenser, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:10:12):
Ended up there.
Speaker 4 (01:10:13):
Well, I didn't know that.
Speaker 2 (01:10:15):
Yeah, right next door with each other.
Speaker 4 (01:10:18):
Well, that would be something.
Speaker 2 (01:10:20):
I was there the day they were tired. I was
the day they were tired in Nasua. That was at Nashua. Yeah,
I don't know it was. It was a horse horse.
They won a derby at the Veterinarian owned and the
(01:10:42):
two people from Washington who was at from Seattle. That
was not Nasua.
Speaker 1 (01:10:51):
Seattle Sloop.
Speaker 2 (01:10:53):
Yeah, it might have been only two.
Speaker 5 (01:10:57):
People from Washington.
Speaker 1 (01:10:59):
I know about. He's a patnarian. Forgot it.
Speaker 2 (01:11:03):
Yeah, I better start up. I'll have to go home.
Speaker 1 (01:11:06):
And you're in the wrong decade.
Speaker 2 (01:11:11):
Story of my life. I've been into damn many of
them for me. Meaning right along, let's get back to
our sponsor, which is Bloodstock Research. And I tell you what,
They've got everything you need at Bloodstock Research. It's I
just I was in a panic until the news they
(01:11:32):
had switched over awful. Yeah, I mean and bored to death. Yeah,
because you know, first, I look every night, I go
through the entire races everywhere, you know, just like you.
Speaker 4 (01:11:49):
Did on the radio for all those here.
Speaker 1 (01:11:50):
Yeah. Well, oh, I gotta tell funny bun one ill.
Did I have a mistake on something in the internet
was a mess And it was Darby Dan Stuart Fitzkeban
And I said, I'm sorry, you know this bah blah
blah whatever I said, And he said, don't worry he said,
(01:12:12):
I started out with a typewriter and all of a
sudden that kind of stuff. And of course Ursul's first
life or never has a chance, so Ursul said, tell him,
ID have to get it off the teletype. And that
was the truth down at w BL.
Speaker 4 (01:12:27):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (01:12:27):
What was funny about the teletype was it was from
the Jockey Club right in New York.
Speaker 2 (01:12:34):
And no from blood from data racing form.
Speaker 1 (01:12:38):
Oh, okay, okay in New York. And the funny part
was I had to tell you if it was a
big holiday or something, they were all drunk. There was
no results period.
Speaker 2 (01:12:49):
Not only that you lived in the horror of walking
in and the teletype machine was broken.
Speaker 1 (01:12:54):
Yeah, yeah, that was that was wild.
Speaker 2 (01:12:57):
That's when I got together it Happy and Happy broadband. Yeah,
and he set me up, you know with the Bloodsuck Research.
Speaker 1 (01:13:05):
When they got it going, Yeah, that was a blessing.
I'll tell you that old teletype of click away and
then it go off and go oh god, yeah, somebody
else is drinking.
Speaker 2 (01:13:16):
You know.
Speaker 1 (01:13:17):
That's amazing.
Speaker 2 (01:13:19):
But anyway, right now, if you want a Kentucky handicapper sheet,
which is published by Bloodstock Graciation Information Services, you can
pick it up out of the red Mouth. Also got
the scratch sheets available out there, and uh, well we'll
go to Britaine at dot com. That's a bus picture
to get anything. I'll tell you what. They're great people.
(01:13:40):
They are. They really are happy as retired you know.
Speaker 5 (01:13:44):
Yeah that's what that's what you were saying.
Speaker 2 (01:13:45):
Yeah, yeah, that's.
Speaker 5 (01:13:48):
A great idea of what he came up with.
Speaker 2 (01:13:51):
Oh yeah, for that was his father, Dick. Yeah, has
founded it found. Yeah, that's right handy And he's a
great he's a great guy.
Speaker 5 (01:14:02):
Did you ever meet around him.
Speaker 2 (01:14:04):
No, I didn't. He passed away. Uh back in the
forties and you know currently right now.
Speaker 1 (01:14:14):
Yeah, the nurse. It was all fighting World War something
or other, saving America for future and stuff.
Speaker 2 (01:14:23):
No, well when he died, he died back in the forties.
Speaker 1 (01:14:26):
Oh yeah, that was that war.
Speaker 2 (01:14:29):
Well, I guess it was during the war and he
died right after maybe Colonel bred Was this his house
over here?
Speaker 1 (01:14:39):
No, No, okay, there's this beautiful house over here.
Speaker 2 (01:14:43):
That brons a green tree. Oh here, the.
Speaker 4 (01:14:46):
Big white house over here on you can see.
Speaker 1 (01:14:49):
It from the road, Yeah, on Paris, right, Yeah, so
it was green tree house.
Speaker 2 (01:14:55):
Yeah, it was on properly. The green tree. It's beautiful,
but then the it's sold at you know, hmm.
Speaker 1 (01:15:03):
Interesting that I did get to see.
Speaker 2 (01:15:05):
Swaps was a grand looking horse, big, big chestnut horse
had a bad foot all his whole life, handicap with him.
Speaker 4 (01:15:14):
It's that same same foot that he had trouble with
the yeah mattresses.
Speaker 2 (01:15:18):
Yeah, they were up all night trying to yeah, and
they were going to scratch and the management just begged
them not to because big crowd coming, you know.
Speaker 4 (01:15:27):
And well that's the kind of thing. I know, we're
going through all kinds of difficulties. But Haisa, that's a
good thing that they wouldn't let in this day and age,
that wouldn't let it. There'll be no discussion about it. Yeah, horse,
he's not going to go. And that's that's a good
that's just true.
Speaker 2 (01:15:45):
And also the injuries have gone way.
Speaker 4 (01:15:49):
Down, Yeah they have.
Speaker 2 (01:15:51):
Yeah, since they have taken over, they've had had some
chicken ass ideas about some things coming in of it,
like you know that you couldn't comply with you mean,
you just couldn't do it if you were training right.
It was.
Speaker 4 (01:16:06):
It's one of those things that's a great idea, but
it was probably probably it's fair, I think to say
not rolled out. If they if they had to do
it over again, what maybe would have done it a
little a little differently goods.
Speaker 2 (01:16:19):
Yeah, when they prove the help, they would have been there.
They would have nailed me when I was training, you know,
because we had a horse test positive for nicotine for
crying out loud nicotine.
Speaker 1 (01:16:32):
Yeah, ye smoke at Winston, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:16:35):
Yes, somebody, and the test said that they had to
ingest it within hours. That a few hours of running,
which means the guy to that is the stew way,
the saw the Turfway Park. Because I didn't smoke, Jacket
didn't smoke.
Speaker 1 (01:16:54):
Well it was the water.
Speaker 2 (01:16:55):
Yeah, the guy that was what was the name of
the fella that used to run, he didn't smoke. Oh god,
I didn't think i'd ever remember. Remember you're looking at
isn't that off?
Speaker 1 (01:17:10):
I can't remember.
Speaker 2 (01:17:11):
Anyway, cigar before the race, Yeah, that's what it was.
Speaker 1 (01:17:16):
They went back behind the barn old back there smoking
and then we were walking back. Ursula went up and
kind of saw a little fit and we were walking back.
They took yeah, well they took Yeah. He went up
and hit the table they're all sitting up there smoking,
(01:17:39):
and what did you say about all? That's what your
blah blah blah.
Speaker 2 (01:17:42):
Yeah, you're talking about niggertine. Look at you guys. For
God's sake, you got a habit of it.
Speaker 1 (01:17:52):
Well we can everybody.
Speaker 2 (01:17:53):
Herb was what I said, Jones, I loved her, did you?
Did you know, old guys, I loved her. He knew
that I was going to go up and raised help,
and he couldn't wait. He was you know, you had
to go up on an elevator at that time, so
I knew that he was going to be waiting at
the bottom of that elevator. Herb was because he's gonna
(01:18:15):
find out what the hell was going on to that.
They ended up taking a person away from it. What happened?
But anyway, I got down there or anything, and he says, Ursul,
what happened? I said, Herbert, I told him that you
said there were a bunch of no good s obs.
I thought he was gonna faint. Oh god, walking we.
Speaker 1 (01:18:43):
Were walking the horse back to the barn. And what
was that guy's name that was in our barn? The
funny guy walked to.
Speaker 2 (01:18:50):
Hersel, Yeah, walked up.
Speaker 1 (01:18:52):
What was his name.
Speaker 2 (01:18:53):
He was from Bursailles and trained horses and and uh,
you know I had a horse test positive. You know
what I mean? Uh? He said, what'd you give him?
I told him? Did he win at the A one?
He says, how much do you get him? Remember that?
Speaker 4 (01:19:24):
Ah?
Speaker 2 (01:19:26):
Well? Prince of Monico won Grade one stakes as a
two year old man is considered ay manded to be
the fastest two yo old ever sided by clip Sward
winning sprinter and noted South spights Down. In fact, he's
the only son of spikes Down to win Grade one
stakes as a two year old. That covers a lot
of territory spights Down outside one hundred and forty five
stakes winners. Prince of Monaco won a Grade one delm
(01:19:49):
off for twity at two sprinding seven farlongs one twenty
two and three, and followed that with a win and
the Grade three Best Palle Stakes and stakes record times
six pharlongs a one o nine flat. He made but
two starts at three charging from sixteen links out of
it after being bumped and pinched back at the start,
and then he was second by half length and the
Grade one win to Stephen Stakes and second by neck
(01:20:12):
after another bad trip in the Grade one h Allen
Jerkin Stakes, also at saratok So. Prince Prince of Monaco
was bred by Stone Street Third Bid Holdings. It raised
a lot of good horses anyway, and this one was
a good one. He sold for nine hundred and fifty
thousand dollars as a yearly grand individual Strong female family standing.
His first season has stead he's at Clayburne also over
(01:20:35):
there standing. His first season studied is the Grade one

who also stands at Cleveland Farm from more on the
clevering stage and just called Bernie or Jacob A five
nine nine eighty seven two three three on the website.
It is a clevenfarm dot calm. Jackie can talk about
(01:21:22):
our insurance company, which we just had to do business with. Yeah,
that's yeah, and they took good care of us as always.
Speaker 1 (01:21:29):
Yeah. I had somebody hit me. Not much of a damage,
you know, but but this person hit me in uh
start screaming you hit me, you hit me, And I
hit my head hanging out the door the driver's side
and looked out and looked down and her car was
in my door.
Speaker 2 (01:21:50):
And let me up the driver's door.
Speaker 1 (01:21:52):
I don't think so.
Speaker 4 (01:21:53):
I think you had been you drove that door right
into her car.
Speaker 1 (01:21:58):
Anyway, I right away. I didn't call the police or anything. Uh.
I called Ted McClain and HOPEO Insurance. Oh yeah, not
a problem. We got all that junk squared out and
it's taking care of It's just great. They've just got
it done just a few phone calls. I'll tell you
(01:22:21):
what's interesting. Ted is an independent insurance agent. He does
not tied down to some big mega company with a
frog or whatever they got. So he pokes around, you know,
and finds good insurance companies that fit what you're looking for.
(01:22:42):
And that's how you get your insurance. Well he's talking
to me about this company that we've got and they're
gonna send me a check. And it was a company
in Cincinnati. I said, wait a minute, how long you
how long a baby in a business? He said, at
least one hundred years. I worked for those people right
(01:23:05):
after my first year of college.
Speaker 2 (01:23:07):
Really.
Speaker 1 (01:23:07):
Yeah, See, I get a summer job and I worked
for that insurance company.
Speaker 2 (01:23:11):
I was Great Western, isn't it?
Speaker 1 (01:23:13):
No American?
Speaker 4 (01:23:14):
Great American, great American park.
Speaker 1 (01:23:18):
There you go, and that's who I worked for ten
years ago before Listen, it was before computers, and we
had these big tables, you know the Christmas movie with
Bob Cratchy sit there at those tables, said and right
like that, that's what we did.
Speaker 2 (01:23:36):
We had these big she said, right next to Bob.
Speaker 1 (01:23:39):
Bob and I were friends. Now, you'd be nice. But
I worked at three months you know, yeah, I know,
but in that party.
Speaker 2 (01:23:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:23:52):
So anyway, it got taken care of, Boom, I mean,
we don't have it fixed you and then go to
old RESSI over here sent me to friends of his
down on Delaware. What's their name again?
Speaker 2 (01:24:05):
Tag? What?
Speaker 9 (01:24:07):
Tag?
Speaker 1 (01:24:08):
Yeah? Okay, So anyway through friends and nice people and
Hope Well insurance agency. It was very little trouble for us,
you know, and so it's gonna be fixed. So, like
I said, they don't they're not tied to a monster company.
(01:24:29):
So what they can do is give you a no cost,
no obligation review and comparison of your insurance and they'll
they'll they'll do that. And the other interesting thing is
you call their number in Paris nine eight seven two
three four seven and they'll say Hope Well. And I
said this, Ted, Yeah, Jackie, how you doing. You know,
(01:24:52):
that's the kind of people you want to deal with. Yeah,
they're they're wonderful. Anyway, they're on a twenty main street
in Paris. You just walk in the door. If then
you feel like they got a parking lot in the back,
give him a call, like I said, it's nine eight
seven two three four seven. They've been in business. There's
(01:25:14):
more people that have been in business forever that that's
how they stay in business. So anyway, give them a
call like I said, nine eight seven two three four seven.
Speaker 4 (01:25:25):
No treat you right.
Speaker 2 (01:25:28):
Alright, We've got TFAM Georgetown, w TFLE everywhere with the

it is a great an area.
Speaker 1 (01:25:57):
Oh yes, I mean even you know doctor Opening, you know,
he talked to him and he was suitably impressed. So
but we tried to talk call him last week and
that was the weekend where the monster storms were going on,
you member, last week, and.
Speaker 2 (01:26:16):
We couldn't get to me, and he was there was

Speaker 2 (01:26:24):
I got home and called him.
Speaker 1 (01:26:26):

because he vaccinates all our all our horses.
Speaker 2 (01:26:50):

Speaker 4 (01:27:26):
Don't know you, they were here this last year and
he was. Brian reminds you, just for a second, Brian
reminds all of us what we should be reminded of,
of how lucky we are to be here. Exactly because
these these aspiring veterinarians for horses, this is the promised
land to see, you know, to see Root and the Rebel,
(01:27:47):
the Sea Haggard's to see, to experience the sales and
then become the old friends and and and to get
to work on a Derby winner. And you know this
is they are starstruck. And sometimes we kind of think it.

For granted, he brought this bunch up at one time,
and he give a bunch of very attractive women, young girls.
You know one guy, one guy, and I said, well,
I know why you're here. I'm looking around and all this.
You know what says, yes, sir, but I'm married.
Speaker 4 (01:28:19):
Well that's a shame.
Speaker 1 (01:28:22):
That's Michael always says, it's got to be at the
right place to Well.
Speaker 2 (01:28:27):
What he should have said is that I'm married, but

we got Bob.
Speaker 10 (01:35:00):
Oh okay, yeah, okay, Brian, Oh, Brian, Oh excuse me, Brian.
Speaker 2 (01:35:12):
I thought we got open on another veterinarian. We would
have to speak to this one.
Speaker 9 (01:35:18):
Then I'm a poor second choice to doctor Copland. I'll
tell you that.
Speaker 2 (01:35:24):
He said, poor second choice to doctor Coplan. Well, listen,
being second to doctor doctor Cochland is no big thing.
Wait a minute, did you forget your Oh? Okay, Oh,
you're welcome. My good friend Sean Washington was just here anyway.
(01:35:46):
What's going on down your way?
Speaker 9 (01:35:49):
Well, we had a weird strangles case the other day
that that came in this It was a little Yearland.
I'm not quite healing, but it didn't add strangles. Uh
that outbreak on the farm that brought a new horse
in and one to quite a few horses, but it
had a a lyft node you usually don't see. There's
(01:36:12):
a lift node up on the side of the head
by the they've got big salvary gland kind of at
the throat latch. It's called the product salvary glands. There's
a lift node up there of the product left node,
and it ended abscessed, and it was a pretty big abscess.
It's probat as big as your fist out, I guess,
and it was sort of sea shaped. And then there's
(01:36:34):
two big blood vessels. You know, a jugular vein starts
at throat lash, but there's two big veins from the
face that feed into that that becomes the jugular vein,
and so they were it was kind of wrapped around
those two two veins. And then there's ill facial nerves
in there and quite a few other things of importance.
So it was going to be a tough surgery. The
(01:36:57):
the owner ended up deciding to take the take the
horse offen see if a disrupture out. It was get
close to the rupture, but it was just in such
a bad spot. You know, I think draining it would
probably been the better choice, but you know, it but
made me think of a couple of things here about
strangles that are important. And one of the things that
(01:37:19):
happened to this horse, and I've only seen this a
time or two, is we've got two different vaccines against strangles,
and regardless of whichever vaccine you use, if a horse
gets strangles and it's been vaccinated, it'll get less sick
than it would have got if it didn't get vaccinated,
so you get milder signs. So you know, it's what
(01:37:42):
we call risk based vaccine. So you know, for me,
I don't I never either encourage or discourage person forget
strangles vaccine because you know, especially if a person is
in a boarding stable with some riding the horse, and
a boarding stable, you know, with horses in and out.
I can't blame anybody for you know, trying to be
(01:38:02):
safe and vaccinate. You know, I guess it didn't see
a whole lot of race horses that were vaccinated against strangles.
But you know, again I would I wouldn't discourage anybody
from doing it. The advantage of using that internasal strangles
so it's made to go in the nose and it
has a little flexible plastic tube. It's probably about four
(01:38:24):
inches long. And what they've done with that back the
bacterium is it's it's modified lives, so it's a live
strangles bacterium. But they and I don't know how they
did it, but they modified that bacterium where it can
only grow in uh in temperatures that are above below
(01:38:45):
or below body temperture, so it only grows in the
first few inches of the nose. But because it's live,
it stimulates immunity really well. And when you have things
like respiredy viruses and strangles that come in through the
nose or the lungs, then there's a little bit different
(01:39:06):
antibody response to that than you would into blood, So
it stimulates a different antibody response, so it does give
you better protection. But both of them work. Okay, you know,
if I have my preference, if somebody's going to vaccine,
i'd do the intranasal. But what happened on this horse too,
is the owner got mixed up and they had their
(01:39:27):
second dose to the vaccine, and so they gave that
live bacterium and injected it like you would have you know,
flu vaccine or whatever. So then the poor horse got
the abscess from that, because that's what will happen because
it will grow, it just doesn't grow as well in
those warmer tempatures, and so got abscess had to be drained.
(01:39:48):
And I've seen horses that have gotten vaccinated around the
same time that they got naturally exposed to the disease,
and they've gotten pretty sick. And you know, part of
that is that you vaccinate them, so you've turned on
their immune response pretty well, and especially that modified live
because it mimics the real infection, and as they get
(01:40:12):
the the get exposed to strangles the disease at the
same time, you know, the community is just really geared
up and they get sicker than the ones I've seen.
Speaker 2 (01:40:22):
So I think that's.
Speaker 9 (01:40:24):
Kind of what happened to this poor horse that you know,
got sick and then it got this abscess. It's you know,
literally up on the side of its head. And we
did a scope on it too, and go into the
guttural pouch in the back of the throats. Look at
the roof of the throat, but the back of the
throat there's a lyft node back there. And the only
(01:40:45):
place that rent lyft node can rupture is into the
guttural pouch. It's on the floor of that guttural pouch
and the ones under the jaw and all that the
rupture to the outside of this lit node and only
rupture into the guttal pouch. And you could see that
lyft node was pretty at large. I don't I don't
know if that was going to rupture or not. Look
look like it suspicious. That could go either way. But
(01:41:07):
sometimes you just scope those horses like we did one
a week ago and a strangle's case, and you could
see in that guttural pouch with an endoscope in there,
you could see like a little almost like a little
scar there right where the lyft note was where it
ruptured into that guttural pouch. And then it had a
(01:41:28):
thing called a condroid, which is just a pussball basically.
And we were able to take our endoscope and we
have a grabber that you use like if if like
kids swallow a quarter or dog swallows a dog toy.
You can go down there with the endoscope and this
little basket opens up and it looks like a like
(01:41:49):
a whisk, you know, like you whisk you know, scrabbled
eggs or something. You open that up and then you
pull it back and that thing will grab you can
grab whatever thing you're going after. And grabbed that big
that condroid is probably about size of the grape, and
grabbed it with our scope and just pulled this, you know,
big pustball. After that horse's got to a pouch and
(01:42:11):
then flushed it put some penicillin in there. So we've
kind of had a run of you know a little
bit fun and unusual strangles over the last two weeks.
Speaker 2 (01:42:23):
Just a straight old case of strangles is bad enough,
oh it is, you know.
Speaker 9 (01:42:27):
And that poor horse, you know, that that yearling, you know,
I mean, it had been through it because you know,
I think the story was they got I got another
horse's sail barn that.
Speaker 2 (01:42:39):
Brought it in.
Speaker 9 (01:42:40):
But and and that's sometimes what happens, because horses can
shed strangles after infection up to about three weeks. So
you know, that's why if if you're bringing something in,
you know, quarantine, quarantine, I mean, it's just it just
you know, it just makes sense, you know. And most
of the disease is that that we have, especially the
(01:43:02):
respiratory diseases. You know, if they pop up, they're gonna
pop up within three weeks, so you know that I
think that'd be the number of most veterinarians would recommend.
And in some strangles horses and it's less than five percent,
probably less than that. They can become carriers so that
the bacteria they're not showing you any signs at all,
so they they get sick, they may not even get
(01:43:25):
sick from it. So they expose strangles and they'll carry
that bacterium and that in their GTTL pouts there in
the back of the throat, so they're asymptomatic. You know,
they show zero signs strangles, no snots, no anything, but
they can still shed it. And that's why you know,
a lot of farms when they bring in new marrors,
part of their protocol is every horse is gonna get
(01:43:47):
a scope passed into the grotturl pouches. You can flush
some saline in there and collect that back when it
runs out their nose, and you can either try to
grow the bacteria, you know, like you would any other bacteria,
or you can do the PCR test, which looks for
the DNA and make sure they're not carrying the carrying it.
You know that they're a carrier. And really, according to
(01:44:10):
the research, you should do that three times every two weeks.
So you should do at least three negatives before you
call them negatives. You know some places you might do
them once, but which is still better than nothing. But
you want to detect those carriers because you know, as
you know, get one in there during breeding season and
(01:44:30):
it can just be devastating, you know, shut down your
whole farm.
Speaker 2 (01:44:34):
Yeah, well, we're getting close to Keenan. You got ready
to come down here? I am.
Speaker 9 (01:44:42):
I've got it's coming up and it's during Kingland, and
of course i gotta look and see. There's an international
it's it's i f a R International I think form
for after Care of race Horses. That's going to be
at Spy Coast and I've got a be on a
panel there about after care of the retired horses. And
(01:45:07):
then so when whenever that is, and I gotta looked
and see because I've didn't write it on my calendar.
I still don't put stuff on my phone to write
stuff down. And when that conference is, I'm gonna come up,
go to Keenland and vaccinate the horses out the old friends,
and make a large trip of it hopefully.
Speaker 2 (01:45:28):
Yeah. We had John Nicholson on the show today and
he says he wish you'd move back up here. I would.
Speaker 9 (01:45:36):
I miss Kentucky so bad. I can't tell you so
I would. I would be there monday if I could.
Speaker 2 (01:45:44):
Will we miss you coming up?
Speaker 9 (01:45:49):
Miss everything about Kentucky so especially this time of year.
Speaker 2 (01:45:53):
You know.
Speaker 9 (01:45:53):
He start getting the Derby preps and he started thinking,
and uh.
Speaker 4 (01:46:00):
What's that?
Speaker 2 (01:46:00):
A couple of the day got to Louisiana Derby and
then we got them Jeff Ruby down at surf, you know.
So it's it's getting closed all.
Speaker 9 (01:46:12):
Right, getting there and then moved the colt getting moved
up there too.
Speaker 2 (01:46:16):
Talk to you next week, all right, see it back well.
The Grade three two hundred and fifty thound dollar Whitmore
Stakes one last Saturday at Oaklahn was won by Booth's
Coat from the first cup by Mottoli boofl it all
the way one by two and a quarter lengths, posting
a one o seven buyer in a display of speed
that carried Mattoli to an Eclipse Awards. Champion sprinter Matolia
(01:46:41):
sired ten stakes winners, four of the greatest stakes winners
in nineteen and they won a place at stakes in
his first two cops Mattoli one and Great one Breeders
Cup Sprint a Grade one Metropolitan, Grade one four Go
Grade one Churchill Downstakes, won ten stakes and fourteen career starts,
never out of the money, and he earned over three million,
one hundred and four thousand. He was brilliant and he's
(01:47:02):
passing it on in other states. Last Saturday, finally, as
three old Phillipelp Star remained undefeated and to win two
hundred and fifty three out of Virginia Oaks at Colonial Downs.
She gained fifty points total birth in the Grade one
Kentucky Oaks, the son of of Start. It was the
multiple greatest States win of over a million, seven hundred
(01:47:23):
and thirty two thousand from the ap and the Caroline
is also the sower of Xandon, a Grade one stakes
winner two million, two hundred thousand dollars. Zandan won a
Grade one Bluegrass, a Grade two Woodward placed in the
Grade one Kentucky Derby, Grade one Travers, Grade one, Whitney
State Grade one Metropolitan, Grade one Penn Derby Grade two
(01:47:44):
Revision Star and the Grade three west Chester. He was
a competitive at the highest level superb individual. Zandan's first
folds were arriving this year and they too were outstanding
and to inspect xand On Mittoli just called dais a
brown of Arc Daniel at eight five to nine two
nine fours, year zero three. They stand at Spencer Farm,
(01:48:05):
the Breeders Farm. The website is spendriffarm dot com. Sally
then so much.
Speaker 1 (01:48:13):
Saw another one this morning. I see him everywhere. Yeah,
they're going up down sixty four the other day. They
look great. I've never seen one with you know, they
take such good care of their equipment. Oh, before I forget,
they are hiring. They are expanding, so they're hiring drivers.
(01:48:35):
So if you want to work for somebody, that's good
and you're a horseman, don't bother to go if you
don't know anything about the horses they're hiring. So they
and they're very high standards, thank you very much. So well,
and they've been in the horse business for god knows
how long, and that's I guess as long as they've
(01:48:58):
shipped horses.
Speaker 2 (01:48:59):
I think they're looking for people to represent them in
various areas you know, like in Florida or somewhere you know, Yeah,
good job, I'd do a good job. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:49:10):
So anyway, they've been in business forever and during that time,
many of the greatest runners ever to step on a
race track have been entrusted to their care. And that
always reminds me of the picture I saw of Justify
getting off that Sallei van waghing out. They're good enough
(01:49:31):
for Justify, They're good enough for whatever you're shipping wherever.
So obvious, there are vehicles and equipment and top shape,
but the single most important safety factor is the ability
and the experience of the horse behind the person behind
the wheel. They're experienced drivers and experienced horsemen, and that's
(01:49:55):
why they do so well. It's a winning combinations. So
think about that next time you ship your horse. Think
about that, whether it's across country or across the county,
when you load your horse into a sally Van, you
can depend on the fact that the person behind the
wheel is one of the best in the business period.
(01:50:17):
People at sally Van wouldn't have it any other way,
and that's why for more than half a century, Sally
horse vans have been the safest way at two five
five nine four O six two five five nine four
oh six. It's the safest way to the winter circle.
Speaker 3 (01:50:39):
Now back to Horsetans with ursul Ellis.
Speaker 2 (01:50:44):
Alrighty both we've got two Derby preps today, both of
them graded the Twin Spires of Louisiana Derby Grade two
a million dollar pots. It's got a field of ten
going in. John Hancock's got the rail tunk of gold
(01:51:04):
as number two. He's by preservation. It's number three is
tistastic by tis the law over at ash from seven years.
There's number three. Caldera is number the years is number four,
(01:51:24):
Caldera is number five, Built is number six, number seven
is Vassimo, Number eight is fury O and number nine
is instant replayed by maximum Security. And that's the one
that's Sir James Williams picks to win it. And HIPN
has run third, I mean is on the outside of
Hip hYP and us he's by in the mischief. So
(01:51:49):
there's a ten horse field in that one. Now and
the Jeff Ruby Stakes, which is a major prep. Now
it's got a it's an odd number perse seven hundred
seventy seven dollars seven hundred and seventy seven thousand dollars
for three ye olds who go on a mile and
and eight down at Turfway today, goes off of six
(01:52:12):
twenty five twelfth race. It's got a field at thirteen
calling card child has to blame by blame California Burial
Burrito final gambit, Flying Mohawk Baby Max by Max's Mischief,
Ziokoso Innovative by Authentic. Number nine is posted by Moneys.
(01:52:40):
Number ten is maximum Promises by maximum Security. Covino is
number eleven. Number twelve is he's now joking but practical
joking on the outside of Candy Town of Spikestown. So
that one goes off at six twenty five milon and
eighth down at Turfway today. Well, let's see john Nis
(01:53:03):
out of the winter last night up at turf Way.
John Stay, Yeah, he does very well. Yeah, he's based
here at the Third Bed Training Center, which is a
good place to be based.
Speaker 6 (01:53:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:53:17):
Absolutely, run Happy came out of here.
Speaker 2 (01:53:19):
Run Happy got all his Yeah, I'll never forget when
they sent him up to New York and everybody said
they're over, they're crazy. He went as through as but
far as you could. A Grade one stake and he
won by as far as you could throw a rock,
have a lot further than I can throw one, that's
for sure. But the boy, he's a fast you know,
(01:53:43):
he's done very well. It's doud sure, he's you know,
he's no in the minschief. But but his has sound
horses and they win races and that means a lot.
Speaker 1 (01:53:56):
And he ran sound without med.
Speaker 2 (01:53:59):
Never not the first drop of anything. Yeah, not even nicotine.
So yeah, anyway, but anyway, congratulations to John. Believe he's Irish,
isn't he?
Speaker 1 (01:54:14):
Yes, she's here. This is a huh native Irish came
here from Ireland.
Speaker 2 (01:54:22):
Yeah. We're at the Turbo Training Center as we speak.
We do the show from Mare every week. They're nice
enough to do that. A little stone bob building over
on the backside over there and see you. Basically I
won't see the starting gate from here anyway. It's it's
(01:54:43):
they've got a five ah a mile track, we've got
a one mile track. We got a starting gate, they
got an official clocker, they've got the grass gallops if
you want to get out there. Excellent facility is a
really cool, great quiet atmosphere. You didn't graze your horse
out here and reasonable restall rents if you can get
(01:55:06):
a stall. If you can't, if you call up and
they're busy, I'll give it. Let me give you that
number to call eight five nine number two nine three
eighteen fifty three. You call them up and askaid if
they've got their stalls available. If you just need one
or two. You might just want to walk through the
stellar the stable area from barn to barn, and maybe
(01:55:29):
somebody there will subleaseh you a couple of stalls. We
did that a couple of times back when we had
Barn fifteen. We subleased.
Speaker 1 (01:55:38):
Oh yeah, you know, so.
Speaker 2 (01:55:42):
You hitchiners at me? No, okay, I thought, have you
appointed something on me?
Speaker 1 (01:55:49):
Oh it's so inched.
Speaker 2 (01:55:50):
Oh okay, we'll scratch away.
Speaker 1 (01:55:55):
How's that if you hear me scratching.
Speaker 2 (01:55:58):
They got grass gallops out here too, We used to
use quite a bit.
Speaker 1 (01:56:03):
Oh yeah, it's a great place in period.
Speaker 2 (01:56:06):
That sure is. Yeah, and as I said, a reasonable race.
Then the facilities are good right here, The location is great.
You're just yeah bypass you have to.
Speaker 1 (01:56:23):
Go somewhere in the inner state is right there.
Speaker 4 (01:56:25):

Speaker 2 (01:56:28):

Speaker 1 (01:56:35):

Speaker 2 (01:56:36):

Speaker 1 (01:56:43):

Speaker 2 (01:56:44):
