Speaker 3 (03:56):
Good morning everyone, and we're here at the Thoroughbred Center
on the Selectington Roads. My wife Jackie and I could
right hand over here on all right, RESSI yeah, And uh,
the boys though both Michael and John are in their
(04:16):
phone's ringing, Jackie, I bet it's Betsy. They're both in
thew in Chicago at Saratoga and uh they're up there
for the third bed after Caroline is in the spotlight
up there this weekend, and they're up there for the
(04:37):
Whitney Stakes, which is We're going to talk a lot
about the Whitney here later on during the show, because
it's it's a race that was one back. Oh, I see,
I've got some notes over here. Black Maria won it
back in and as a shoes a mayor. Uh back
(05:03):
in there. Let me give you the date for fucking
fine a damn thing. Yeah, nineteen twenty two. No, that
was at Smith's Foot State. Well, I screwed up already. Something.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
Oh that's okay, it's you know, once you broke in
the ice. What the heck? Anyway, we don't gonna have
to listen to the air conditioner, because when we got
up this morning, it was a lovely fifty eight. Enjoyed
it thoroughly. So, oh, I'll tell you why are you
looking for that? I picked up a condition book from
Kentucky Downs and the first second race I look at
(05:42):
it is Saturday the thirtieth, the Nashville Very Invitational. Who
three million, five hundred dollars. Now they pay all the
way back to last I think, and someone, you know,
I can remember when we would go to the races,
you know, in the pot, the main pot, the big
(06:05):
deal was ten thousand dollars in a race seven or something,
and now three and a half million. All these things
are at least a million dollars. I mean, wow, you
got to go to those things. And I'm gonna watch
them too. You find what we're looking for.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
When I was looking for how else Black Maria wanted
back in the first Whitney. It's not a real old race.
It was, uh, that was in nineteen to see twenty
twenty eight. I believe it is. She wanted as a
five year old beaten mails.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
And much twenty twenty eight. You mean nineteen twenty eight.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
In nineteen twenty eight eight, thanks, yeah, yeah, she'd read
by Cornfield ten.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
Oh yeah, you've got some stories about Felch and oh.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
All right, I got some. I got some real stories
about him.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
Yeah, that's neat.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
Yeah, she was. She beat chain Shot in wish Curry
that day, beat the Top Big Top because she was
a five year old mayor and she was a pretty
good producer as far as that goes too. She was
a uh, she was a champion Philly Champion Handicap mayor.
She won the Kentucky Oaks One, the Illinois Oaks aquinoch Handicap,
(07:29):
and that year is a six year old one of
the five year old ones who won the Whitney also
and second, the Saratoga Handicap, and the Merchants and Citizens.
She won eighteen times during her career. And wow, I
said she was read by a real colorful gentleman named
(07:50):
Colonel Field. She and I had I met him, Uh
the year that he died. I said, I'd just gotten
out of the service and had gone gone on the racetrack.
I left on the racetrack and went to work for
the blood Horse magazine and uh he came in. Yeah,
(08:13):
and they introduced me to to the colonel. This was
shortly before he died, by the way. Yeah, but he
was very interested in me, and he when I said
it was ursul Eliso, he says, are you are you
kin to the Ellison managers Dixiana? And I said, yes,
i am. I don't know if he'll admit it or not,
(08:34):
but i'm his son. And the Colonel Kurt Laugh said, well,
he's a fine gentleman and a really great horseman. And
he said, who's your mother? He said, my mother is
ruth Red and I said she was a daughter of
Colonel Dick Read and he said, looked at me and
he says, son, you got a great pedigree. Made me
(08:57):
feel good. But he was a real car you know.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
Yeah, what did he look like?
Speaker 3 (09:04):
He was medium size, but heavy set, you know, carried
too much weight.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
Yeah, I was trying to think. I thought, I think
I've seen pictures, Yeah that I can't remember. So that's
that's how old was he when he died? How old
you about?
Speaker 3 (09:22):
I wouldn't say, probably in his in his seventies, how Yeah,
but he'd been around a long time.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
He trained a horse named high Time who turned out
to be a leading sire.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
Oh you'll have to tell that story.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
Well, he trained him in and it turned out he
pent a lot of money on him on his first start,
and the horse stopped once to the front and opened
up about ten linx and then got beat yeah, and
turned out he was windy.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (09:55):
And the owners came over after the race of everything,
and the colonel he was kind of disgusted with it.
He says, if you all get this horse out from
under my shed, rowe in the next hour, there will
be no training bills. Otherwise it's gonna be double. So
(10:15):
they came and got him. And a few years later,
not too much long later, uh, somebody had told him
about a couple of nice coats that were for sale,
and doctor Johnson over here on bron Station Road at him,
and he'd kind of put it off. And everything. He
knew doctor Johnson real well, and he was a fine gentleman.
(10:36):
But he was a little close with a dollar, yeah,
he said, the colonel said, And he played the stock
market all the time and anytime it went down a
couple of points, and had taken him to the hospital.
But he took he took his money seriously, you know.
And he said, and he said, this horse, whatever they
were bay, it came to be by much because he
(11:00):
wouldn't pay much stud fees, so he didn't go and
finally went out, and he went out and inspected him
and oh, and he says, my god, they were two
of the best looking horses the ever. Gonna lead your
eyes on'em, yeah, and he said, I went. I went
went up to the house and we sat down and
had a couple of toddies, you know, and everything. And
(11:22):
finally I asked him, said, what are you asking uh
for those two cops? He says, uh, fifteen hundred for
the pair, and the currency is they're mine. So they
went on, had a couple of more tartis, and finally
he asked him who they buy and they said they're
by high time. He said, oh, my said oh. I said,
(11:44):
if I'd known that I had to pay the fifteen
hundred dollars not to take 'em. But my word is
my bond, and I said I'd take him, and he
you know, I I will. Well, it turned out one
of them turned out to be Saracen right, who was
one of the all time greats. The other one was
the horse that I forget his name, but he won
(12:05):
twenty five races and stakes races. Also. Both of 'em
are and it didn't take the Colonel long to figure
out that those horses were very, very talented. So he
wanted to buy the Stillard horse, you know. And uh
they were they were asking him fifty thousand for him,
you know. Yeah, and he didn't have the money at
the time. The colonel up and down, but he had
(12:27):
a friend out in California. Uh. He wired him and says, I,
I'm I'm looking for twenty five thousand dollars right now
to buy this horse. I I can come up with
half of it myself, but I need some help. And
the guy sent him some money for fifty thousand. He says,
if you need twenty five, you need fifty, So here
(12:47):
it is. So he went in and bought him, and
the horse went on became a tremendous sire our time,
did Yeah, he led the sire list, and the colonel
he was always up and down for his finances. School.
This was in nineteen twenty it's twenty eight or twenty nine.
(13:09):
He topped to Silest.
Speaker 2 (13:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (13:11):
By that time, mister Charlest Fisher was coming into the business,
and he did see. He approached mister Fisher and said, uh,
would you be interested in buying this horse, and mister
Fisher looked at you know, yeah, he said, yes, so
I would, So he did. They bought him and he
(13:33):
moved him over to Dixiana and uh he led the silence.
I said, in twenty nine he topped a two year
old silence like six times foof and it was just
a tremendous ide. Lived to be ninety. I think it
was nineteen thirty seven. He finally passed away at Dixiana.
Speaker 2 (13:52):
Wow. But did you remember him?
Speaker 3 (13:55):
No, I don't. I was just six years old at
the time, and I had seen him. Yeah, I wish
I had. Yeah, he but he dick, He really Dick
Jianner high time. I really kind of put Dixanna on
the map because the sure his daughters were great producers,
(14:16):
and he signed at one time fifty and I'm pretty
sure I remember this, fifty seven percent of his U
of his two year olds and over cops, you know,
yeah one who. And I remember my dad telling me
that one spring up at Churchill Downs, they were in
(14:40):
something like twenty two year old races up there doing
the meet and Dixianner won fifteen of them with high times.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (14:48):
And then they went on. It's like Tusie cake and
those kind of marriage went on and through all kinds
of runners and everything.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
That's great story.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
Yeah, he was. He was quite character.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
You know what did he He had a farm right,
what was the name of his farm?
Speaker 3 (15:05):
Do you remember? He did live over here in his
house at one time next to the so he had
this property here, Yeah, and he had a little property
closer to the town right across from you know whether
they said all those big trucks up here at on
Pair Spike, Yeah, yeah, right across the road of a
(15:26):
field over there, and he owned that.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
I don't know if he ever had horses on it
or not. But he was up and down.
Speaker 2 (15:34):
Yeah, you know funny.
Speaker 3 (15:36):
Yeah, the guy that the guy that sent him the money,
it was another he had was another guy that was
up and down all the time. And at one time
he was in Cuba and he was gambling away and everything.
(15:57):
He was down, you know, lost his money and everything.
And he walked out the front door. All they had
left and he was cuber. You know, a lot of
water between him and home.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (16:12):
All he had was a five dollar meal. So he
bumped into this guy was carrying a fish, and he said,
what kind of fish is that? Guy says it's a
snap red snapper and five dollars says it's not. Well,
how are we going to settle his bed? Says we're going.
(16:33):
I'm gonna take this down to the guy that why,
I'm gonna sell him and let him give it. So
he walked in and put put the fish down to
him and said, what kind of fish is this? Man?
You've been fishing these waters for twenty years, you know,
damn well? What kind of fish he is? He says,
(16:53):
to saddle the wager. What kind of fish is? He says?
A red snapper? So he handed over his last five dollars.
Bill walked out the door, and he was still the
hell of a bed. I had every other kind of
fish in the ocean going for me.
Speaker 2 (17:12):
I love that. Oh yeah, the story is where is
high Is? Anybody know where High Time is buried?
Speaker 3 (17:20):
I guess he's buried out on Yeah it could be.
I don't know. They buried star Song behind and matter
Air behind the stud bar, but there's no markers. Yeah,
he may be buried there too, Sure, big chestnut horse,
I said, I don't remember him, but that's what my
dad described him. Man, I remember a lot of the mares. Yeah,
(17:42):
you know, I better catch up here and do commercially,
and we're going to try to get in touch with
somebody else. Okay. The Right Future is the Grade one

Well we'll go back to talk a little bit about it.
Huh got John? Now, John in your morning? Good morning,
arsl How are you well? We're missing you down here.
Speaker 5 (22:49):
Well, I'll tell you what I missed you. But I'm
pretty damned happy to be where I'm at.
Speaker 6 (22:54):
Uh, here with.
Speaker 5 (22:55):
Michael, blowing on the very porch where old Friends was
found at a generation ago. I feel like I'm on
hallow ground here.
Speaker 3 (23:06):
Well, what are you drinking?
Speaker 7 (23:10):
Saratoga Springs water is healthy? You wouldn't know anything about it.
Speaker 3 (23:15):
Well, I know better if you're with Michael.
Speaker 5 (23:19):
We're here with the spoken family members are here with
us and learning a lot of the wonderful lore of
what it was like to grow up here at Anne's
Washington End, which is once again it's the founding place
of old friends, in the center of all that's relevant
for the Saratoga Race meet.
Speaker 3 (23:43):
Well, I guess you're always going to the races, of course, Michael.
Speaker 8 (23:48):
What a day, versall?
Speaker 7 (23:49):
What a day it is today? I mean, it's a
beautiful day weather wise, it's a great what a great
program they put together for the Whitney Steak, so it's
going to be really great.
Speaker 3 (24:01):
Well, who do you like that drinking?
Speaker 7 (24:07):
Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 2 (24:09):
I do have a loser of the week. We can
get to that.
Speaker 7 (24:11):
But this place is so great. And yesterday was the
Hall of Fame inductions, and John and I were there,
and I wasn't having any great expectations for the Hall
of Fame inductions because when I first read about it,
I was disappointed because there was no jockey going in
and no training going in. And we went and yesterday
(24:32):
and it was one of the best ceremonies I've ever
been to, and I've been going to these things for
twenty five years, and it was really spectacular, highlighted by
Arthur Hancock's speech. Arthur did a fabulous job. He was
really really, really great. And Alfred Knuckles from Ahrzelind Farm
did a great get a really nice talk about his
(24:56):
family's horse to cathlon that was inducted into the Hall
of Fame. It was really really great and they had
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (25:02):
Thirty Hall of famers there, oh at least yeah, yeah,
every jockey, every jockey that you can think of in
the last shoot fifty years.
Speaker 3 (25:13):
Uh was there?
Speaker 5 (25:15):
It was just one incredible uh Hall of Fame jockey
after another.
Speaker 3 (25:21):
Uh there.
Speaker 5 (25:22):
It was really something. And Ed Bowen's family too, that
was very touching. The whole thing was really really uh special.
Speaker 3 (25:29):
Well that's great.
Speaker 7 (25:30):
So we can't wait to come to your induction.
Speaker 2 (25:37):
There, Jackie, we're waiting.
Speaker 7 (25:42):
We're wait, We're waiting to see Ursul inducted.
Speaker 5 (25:45):
We'll all come back for that.
Speaker 2 (25:47):
Oh yeah, okay, my breast.
Speaker 7 (25:50):
Okay, can we show a little more enthusiasm back one?
Speaker 2 (25:55):
Huh?
Speaker 3 (25:55):
I think he's tok huh hey Jackie and sass yourselfing Michael,
are you there? Okay?
Speaker 2 (26:04):
Yeah, okay. Have you looked at grats number one because
this is funny, the number two, number one horse. There's
a pair his name Ted Naffy, now Spencer a farm.
The manager is Ned Toffee Ned short Edwards.
Speaker 3 (26:28):
Right.
Speaker 2 (26:29):
Well, somebody sent in something with a typo and instead
of Ned Toffee, they got Ted Naffy and they named
a horse Ed Naffy. Now that's my pick of the day,
I tell you, that's all. That's all. I that's my contribution.
Speaker 7 (26:54):
Well, Ned's a great guy and he, you know, pretty much.
You know, he's pretty much one of the controlling factors
of his had Spencer fronts of pretty much the whole thing.
But I remember when he was here in Massachusetts, he
and he he and he was working at the fairs,
(27:15):
the muck and stalls. So I'm sure he'll be here
for the race. I'll tell him you're asking for him.
Speaker 3 (27:24):
Okay, Well, yeah, he's he's a really nice guy. In fact,
that whole outfit over said Spencer is nice. Well, y'all
going to the races today? Who you didn't tell me
who you liked in the in the the big race
(27:46):
today though.
Speaker 7 (27:49):
Oh, the Travelers is wide open.
Speaker 3 (27:52):
I mean you can.
Speaker 2 (27:53):
You could make a.
Speaker 7 (27:54):
Case of virtually every every every horse there. But I
hate to pick, you know, favorites, but I think it
goes down to the two favorites, Uh, Fierceness and Sierra Leone.
If the pace is hot, Sierra Leone is gonna gonna
ship should be able to close and get something. But
(28:15):
if uh, if Fierceness can sit right outside the pace,
he'll be the first one to pass the speed horses
and that.
Speaker 3 (28:21):
Could be really good.
Speaker 7 (28:22):
And then if white a Barrio finally wakes up, after
you know, in and out, in and out career. You know,
he's he's he's an older horse and he's really really,
really good when he.
Speaker 3 (28:34):
Wants to be.
Speaker 5 (28:36):
The last time White Barrio Barrio ran, he had a
finished fourth and had a bad outing, but it was
on a sloppy track, and he had won previously on
good tracks. So maybe that's maybe today might be his day.
Speaker 3 (28:51):
Yeah, White a Barrio. Well, of course he won the
Classic d Classic. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (28:58):
Yeah, he's he's good on his on the proper day.
Speaker 7 (29:02):
But I'm telling you it really doesn't make a whole
lot of difference because today is so beautiful that just
going there and throwing your tickets on the ground would
be fun.
Speaker 3 (29:11):
Yeah have you been doing it? When did Joe good?
When did you get up here?
Speaker 5 (29:23):
We got up here what Wednesday?
Speaker 3 (29:24):
Michael? Right?
Speaker 5 (29:25):
Yeah, and uh we had went to the Jockey Club
round table and that was that was interesting. This young man,
Griffin Johnson, our soul is really this influencer, Uh is
really really something, and you know he's he's uh speaking
to all the jen X and jen y or one
(29:46):
of the gen Z and jen X people. Running out

also does handicapping. He was really really interesting and entertaining.
(30:10):
So we did that and then uh, as Michael said,
then we went to the to the Hall of Fame
induction and that was that was incredible too. So it's
been a I think any any week in Saratoga's a

Of course, that's the home of Justified Scandinavia. Is the

last year after he won the Classic Group on English Derby.
Then there's just f y I champion two year old
Philip her year in this country, opera singer, was a
champion three of Yer in Europe, learning to fly the
(32:03):
champion two year old Philly in Australia. And believe me,
he has just scratching the surface. Just this year alone,
Justify I had sied eleven stakes winners twenty to winter
placed in States, four graded stakes winners, two of them
Grade one stakes winners. He's one of six tiants at
Ashred stud currently ranked among the top twenty sires on
(32:27):
a North American style list. The others are Practical Joke
and the Mistress Leading Son had Stud Mendelssohn Munnings, Uncle
Ole and triple Crown winner American Pharaoh. No other stud
farm in North America can match that record. And let
me remind you that Justify is the only winner of
the Triple Crown to retire undefeated. They have a great
(32:49):
reputation for developing successful sires at Ashred stud Now is
the time to make your plans for twenty twenty six.
Just call the farm eight five nine eight seven three
seventy eighty eight and they'll find the right staying at

I mean that new shop is beautiful. They have uh
tourists going there and everything I mean, and it's really
(34:01):
they have really dressed up downtown and it's large. A
lot is attributed to Ralph Quilling I mean he gets
stuff done. So if you're looking now, of course it's
sales time, and nobody makes sales halters and shanks and
all that stuff any better than Quillings. And I feel
(34:23):
like by now everybody that's awake has gotten their sales
halters and stuff. And they also have just for fun.
If you're looking for a nice belt and they put
your name tag on it, let me tell you they don't.
They're not any better looking than when you get to Quillings. So,
(34:45):
and they've got different colors of leather. All the leather
is English halter leather, which is really really gorgeous. I
mean it's just beautiful all by itself. And they have
other things. They have key I guess I've had my
key tag thirty five years. I know, Ursul, you've had
(35:06):
yours longer. Your key tag. Yeah yeah, I mean they
just well, for one thing, and they don't wear out now,
it's look nice. They also have a mousepad. I never
looked at that before for your computer. Huh. Double English
bridle leather adds a finished look to our popular Oh
(35:30):
those are key tags. Yeah, they're wonderful. They have CHECKI covers,
they have they have a little thing like a wallet
that folds in half that fits all your driver's license
and your new super duper identification thing into my Kroger's
(35:51):
card and all that jazz. They're nice because you put
them in one place, in your purse or your pocket
or whatever you can find them. They have stall nameplates,
they've got everything for crying out loud, stop in. It's
really kind of fun. We saw tourists going in there.
(36:11):
The front half of the shop. You walk around and
look at all the great stuff for sale. It's very interesting.
And then there's a glass wall and behind that class
wall is the where they make the stuff, and you
can stand there and watch them make them, which is
(36:32):
pretty cool. Anyway. Quill q U I L L I

Ted Noffy. I just said, well, I can't hear very
well over the phone. But I thought that was funny.
The guy's name is Edward Toffee and Ned and Ted
and that kind of thing. Yeah, so he goes by
(37:28):
ned Toffee and they got something in their office called Tedffee.
It was came in for Ted Offfee and they all
got a big kick out of it. So they named
a horse after him, and he's in Uh did I
say the first? Yes, first race at sarah Tooga today,
(37:48):

Yeah, well they're just pretty straight error. So I don't
know if that's a prophobe, but isn't that funny.
Speaker 2 (38:30):
We're going to talk about it. Lower those odds.
Speaker 3 (38:34):
Yeah, well we're going to do something on Spencer Farm
here in just a second, anyway that one of my
good class or whatever. Let's take a look at the
whitney while we've been plugging it here. We got some
more to talk about later on a black black Maria

Speaker 2 (38:55):
Chen you remember Barry Jones and yeah, horse. He and
his family were somewhere on vacation and they went into
a restaurant and the waitress was wonderful. She was so
nice and pretty and all this kind of stuff. And
(39:15):
he told her he was gonna name a horse after her,
and he did. Her name was Lovely Maria. Oh yeah,
and she turned out to be a nice horse.
Speaker 3 (39:24):

they named that horse after yeah waitress.
Speaker 3 (39:42):
Well in the Whitney today, it's got a field of
ten and uh she won two three. Four of them
were raised at four of the ten were raised on
my Caulay products. So give them a plug. I'm at it.
Uh mine Frame skippy along stocking, disarmed and contrary thinking mind.
(40:05):
Frame has got the rail. He is. He's my constitution
bread by Larry Johnson. He's a Virginia bread. By the way,
he's going to stud at Clayband Farm. Oh he is
when he's retired, of course he's usually. I'm sure he's
got his eye on the Classic and everything, you know.
(40:28):

That's why we were going to file for that name.
And we don't never get that, you know. And sure enough,
now this horse name is post Time. That's a that's
a surprise. You'd think somebody had that ten times before.

Speaker 3 (43:32):
Yeah, that's a song. What was that girl's name? Me

by a margin of more than seven million dollars over
the rank of second rank sire, and he is also

energy than you can believe. He is a horse, farm
and land specialist. He is a full time realtor, and
(46:11):
on the other side, he's a horseman, and he has
a lot of experience in both. He's a licensed horse
trainer and eleven states. He's got years of experienced training, riding,
you name it, breeding, they do it all And in fact,
we used it when Ursula was clocking. We'd sit over
(46:33):
and watch him pull up with a two horse and
come out with those horses on rope shanks, and he'd
time up to the side of the trailer, tack one
up and off it go to the track and he'd
work on himself and it was so funny watch him.
He'd get to the line and he'd clicked the stopwatch
(46:54):
on his wrist. I mean, how cool was that he
didn't you know? Anyway, he's really knowledgeable about horses, and
his really knowledgeable about land. I mean he knows all
the zoning rags, state and local, and boy there's a
bunch of them. I mean, you go in there with
(47:15):
your eyes shut you're in big trouble. So you want
to buy a farm. You want to buy a farm
with it's never been anything but cattle, or a farm
that's been set up. You need to talk to him
because he wants to know what you do with it
and what you want to do. Are you going to breed?
(47:35):
Are you going to trade? Are you going to sell whatever?
And then he can gear your purchase to what you're
going to do. Because you make a big fat mistake,
you're going to wind up walking some yearling a half
a mile somewhere to put him in a paddock. So
don't mess up. Call Hill. He lead you in the
(48:01):
right way.
Speaker 3 (48:02):
Well, he's a great guy and his wife, Riggan his

(01:02:33):
He ran third in the last race at Turfway Park
in nineteen ten. It's unbelievable. Okay, let's see at Sarah
told the racetrack. Number four he likes a horse named
(01:02:56):

recie verse. Number ten is the test Stakes and he
likes number one. It's it's rag time raise. Eleven is
uh number nine? Uh fierceness Elice Park number. I think
(01:03:21):
that's an eight? Okay, National Derby. Huh that's a National Derby?
Oh is it okay? Oh? Yeah, the National Derby. But
I'm I don't know what I think that's an eight.
I'm not a great admire of your handwriting. Anyway, Massero
(01:03:44):
one is supposed to win that. That's number one, and
that's in the nationale Derby down at Ellis Park today.
So anyway, those are the horses that here you are.
Speaker 2 (01:03:58):
See. That must be a preview of Kentucky towns again because.
Speaker 3 (01:04:03):
Yeah, the racers.
Speaker 2 (01:04:04):
Yeah, that's the one that's sorting a half millions.
Speaker 3 (01:04:08):
Yeah, those persons.
Speaker 2 (01:04:09):
Ray two, what do you have to do to get
a grade one down there?
Speaker 8 (01:04:12):
My god?
Speaker 2 (01:04:13):
Oh you asked me what?
Speaker 3 (01:04:17):
Well? Anyway, and well it used to be dueling grounds.
That's it great to do. I like that name. But
in Kentucky down, doesn't you. Yeah, I guess people used
to go over there and it's down to close to Bowling.
Speaker 2 (01:04:33):
Green and it's down on the Tennessee border.
Speaker 3 (01:04:36):
Yeah, they used to. I guess they after dueling in
Tennessee there, so they would cross the across the river
there and shoot it out in Kentucky up accoyron. Yeah.
Well therefore, yeah, okay, well let me let's bristet bloodsuck
(01:04:58):
Research Information Services. I couldn't do the show with that.
And they did so good and nice people running over
there and you know that.
Speaker 2 (01:05:08):
Oh yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:05:09):
When we got hacked, we're not hacked like you. Yeah. Well,
we lost all our access to bloodstock research and everything. Yeah,
and we called them. We had this young lady what April?
Speaker 2 (01:05:25):
Oh yeah, the computer lady had to come to this.
Speaker 3 (01:05:28):
April is her first name. I remember, you don't see, Yeah,
because we had pretty girl too.
Speaker 2 (01:05:32):
When we left the bank after we got hacked, the
lady at the bank said, having sax, don't turn on
your computer. Take it over there. Her name's April, she'll
fix it otherwise, you know. So we left it with her,
and she fixed it, and then I said, you're gonna
have if you bring it back, you're gonna have to
stay because we have to change every single useer name
(01:05:56):
and password. Yeah, and of course theirs on the edge
of and see what about bris I have to have.
Speaker 3 (01:06:02):

Speaker 3 (01:06:17):
She got it done and and they called. Yes the
next day from Bloodstock Research people call and says, there's
everything okay now, and yes, that's pretty damn good. I think, well,
there was a nice people over there, and that's a
great service. And the one thing that they've got that
(01:06:38):
American product records thing. I don't see I to do
with that that every every mayor ever had a damn fold.
It's running in this world wide. You know they've got
it there.
Speaker 2 (01:06:50):
Yeah, it's fun to go kind of motion to all
that stuff.
Speaker 3 (01:06:55):
That's Bloodstock Research Information Services. They are the best. And
once again you can pick up that uh Kentucky handicap
of sheet right over there to red mill or or
go to m uh bristnet dot com. To get your copy. Okay,
(01:07:16):

I was gonna talk about. They're running a pucker up.
I remember punking up. Pucker up. That's tomorrow. They're running tomorrow.
They're running and pucker up. Where at Ellis Park? Oh huh, okay,
(01:07:40):
she was by Olympia. I remember her before she could fly. Oh,
Olympia stood out at uh what was in that Aida
farm down and Aida Rice? Yeah, out on Lee'stown Road
and uh, they they had some nice studs at her
at the Vertex was out there. I love Vertex.
Speaker 2 (01:08:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:08:04):
He was in that same crop as Boulou and the
round Table and Gallant Man. And that was General Dude
a cross.
Speaker 2 (01:08:12):
That was one of the old time run that.
Speaker 3 (01:08:14):
That was the all cause. The second one that they
they people taught was Raycount's crop and that was I
think it was nineteen twenty eight, Is that right? Raycount?
John Hurts had watched ray Count run in a race. Yeah,
(01:08:36):
and they were coming down to the wire and raycout
reached over and the Savage is the horse next to
him and John John Hurts John Hurts says, I got
to have that horse and he bought him. Yeah, and
of course he sided Count Fleet, Yes, Ray count and
coach count Fleet.

farm secretary doctor McGee, it's Went Farm. And she came
in I think it was hostage at the time. That
was real big deal. And she came in from France,
(01:09:24):
don't you know. Uh, they spent a certain time of
the year in France. And she wore white go go
boots and the first pair of white go Go boots
I ever saw and see some people with certain things
of sticking yourround. White go go boots saved me or
so we'll say something anything. I'm talking about white go
(01:09:47):
go boots. That's ridiculous.
Speaker 3 (01:09:49):
But he used to wear them with many skirts. That right, Okay,
what the hell do I know about white go go skirt? Yeah?
Asking too much of me. I guess I used to look,
but forgotten why I am. Okay, we'll say, I guess
(01:10:10):

Say something about our good friends over with Hope Well
aally are.
Speaker 2 (01:15:35):
Good friends, they're just not business associates. It's a small town,
walk in wonderful kind of a place. When we moved
to Bourbon County thirty plus years ago, we didn't know
where to go for insurance and all of our friends
said there's only one place, Hope Well and so Ursul
(01:15:59):
went in and talked to Ted McClain and we've been
with them ever since. Besides the friendliness and the approachability.
It is what I really like. You can call them
up and say, okay, what about blah blah blah, and
they'll tell you you sure can't do that with those
(01:16:21):
monster insurance companies that are worldwide. I mean, you're nothing
but a number. And how they work this, this is
besides being in a small town. They're an independent insurance agency.
They are not tied to some mega mega mega corporation.
What they do is they hunt around, poke around, and
(01:16:44):
find the best financially sound, reputable companies, so then they
can offer the best coverage at the best price. And
I was I don't know who they signed us with,
but they finally wound up. I found one company that
they used is in Cincinnati. It's been around for one
(01:17:07):
hundred years at least, which means it's doing something right
or wouldn't be in business. And it turned out I
think I worked for that company one summer when I
was in college. Anyway, they're wonderful. They're really good. So
since they work it that way, they can give you
a no cost, no obligation review in comparison of your insurance.
(01:17:33):
So this help Well Company is established in nineteen fifty five.
My gosh, they've been in business for how long? That's
another sign of being good. So it's a full service
insurance agency. Their phone number local number in Paris where
most everything is nine eight seven two three four seven.
(01:17:56):
That's two three four seven better. Yet they're on main street,
any twenty main Street. They got a parking in the
back too, So give them a call or stop by
the offices A twenty Main Street and pair. They're really
really nice people and they'll do a great.
Speaker 3 (01:18:14):
Job for you.
Speaker 1 (01:18:17):
Wwtfam Georgetown lexisn wtf'll be a little everywhere with the
iHeartRadio app now number one for podcasting.
Speaker 4 (01:18:28):
Now back to the Thoroughbred Training Center and Ursa Ellis.
Speaker 3 (01:18:33):
Well, we have doctor Bron Wallridge on with us today
and Brian, how you doing, Oh, we're doing well.
Speaker 8 (01:18:40):
How about you?
Speaker 3 (01:18:42):
Well, we've got a beautiful day up here. It's cool.
I think it was seventy something this morning when we go,
oh no, no, no, fifty eight, fifty eight up here.
Speaker 6 (01:18:51):
Oh man, that's really cool. Kentucky weather, it's been blazing
hot here, but the pretty good storm went through and
it's supposed to knock it down in the eighty five
range today we were hitting heat indexes down here, one
hundred and fifteen in a couple of days.
Speaker 3 (01:19:07):
Huh, Well, I don't know what to tell you.
Speaker 2 (01:19:11):
Are you staying in.
Speaker 8 (01:19:13):
You don't mowgrass on those days? I know that if
you can help it. But but finally it feels pretty
good now.
Speaker 3 (01:19:23):
But what's going on in Mississippi State, Well, we've got.
Speaker 8 (01:19:29):
Just a bachelism I'm sending home today. I see almost
as much botulism here as I did in Kentucky. And
this is the area that's not supposed to have it,
so most people don't know to vaccinate for it. We're
trying to change that. Slowa sure, but got hair going home.
And then I did see some pictures. We talked about
that tarratoma the other day or maybe that was last week,
(01:19:50):
and that stallion and that tumor did have it had
blonde hair and teeth, so it was terrible looking. But
they want to talk about today. People may have seen it.
There is a case of rabies in Garrett County and
then a case of West Nile in Boyle County. So
(01:20:10):
it's the time of year if your horses are due
vaccines against West Nile or there or sleeping sickness. The
Eastern equines ut low my lighters, or that Western equins
low my lighters, be sure and give them boostered, because
we tend to see those diseases in late summer kind
of you know, early fall. And nobody knows exactly why that.
(01:20:34):
Maybe the mosquitoes feed differently some they they prefer to
feed on birds, Maybe they start feeding on horses just
or you know, humans and animals and the horses like
that later in the year, or the water drives up.
Nobody knows exactly why. But if they're due that horse
was put down, and as they've had at least one
(01:20:54):
vaccine against West Nile, they're more likely to survive than
they've had no vaccine.
Speaker 6 (01:21:00):
Uh.
Speaker 8 (01:21:00):
And then those other diseases can follow, and you know rabies,
Yeah good, you know we've got good vaccines for that.
Speaker 3 (01:21:08):
The AAP, the.
Speaker 8 (01:21:09):
American Association of Equine Practitioners their recommendation and every every
horse needs to get vaccinated against five things, and rabies
and West Nile are in those two. The other is tetanus,
and then the Eastern and the Western equine cephalo my life.
That's their sleeping sickness. People will call it sleeping sickness,
because usually though kind of act like they're sleepy when
(01:21:31):
they have those diseases. But rabies in Kentucky is going
to be mostly well mostly they're totally spread by skunks
and horses anyway. You know, you still get bat rabies
no matter where you are, but skunks or the or
the reservoir animal in Kentucky. And I've seen a rabid
horse and it sounded really similar to this one, and
(01:21:53):
you know, started showing some neurologic signs and then became aggressive,
and you know, it was put down the one I saw.
The morning that they saw the horse thought it showed
signs to collic, which they can show signs to college
with with rabies and horses. That I can remember, doctor
John Schumacher, who taught me at Auburn probably most of
(01:22:15):
well to note, said he kept a horse for college
one time, and you know, he couldn't find anything at
surgery to be the cause of the colleague. And then
the next morning the horse was really neurologic and then
he knew it probably.
Speaker 3 (01:22:31):
Had rabies, and it did.
Speaker 8 (01:22:33):
So it's rare, but you can see it. But they
when they started acting strange, you know, so it looks
like colic. And then the horse became neurologic with the
one I had, I thought it was collig. He took
it to their local vet and then it was acting neurologic,
and so there the local vet did some treatment on it,
(01:22:53):
sent it to Auburn, and by the time we got it,
the horse was down in the trailer. And I'll never
forget it. It reminded me of a snapping turtle when
it when and it was facing its horse the back
of the trailer on stock trailer, and it would bite
at you. You could hear the teeth clicking. That was
trying to bite you so badly. And it had been unvaccinated.
Speaker 3 (01:23:15):
So we went ahead.
Speaker 8 (01:23:17):
And you know, it's really suspicious of a rabies because
it moves fast and the horse show signs of rabies
usually died in a few days or even less. And
so I talked to the owner, and you know, the
horse hadn't been vaccinated, and I said, look, I'm pretty
sure this is rabies. So we put the horse down
and and uh, sure enough, it was rabies. And we
(01:23:38):
had two human exposures off that one horse that we
were taking it over to the necropsy. One of the
texts it was fall or winter, I can't remember whichever one.
And he kind of had to scratched something on his
head and he had the horse sliva on his sleeve
and he got saliva in his eyes. So that's a
primary exposure, just like bite. And then when the pathologists
(01:24:02):
took the brain out of the skull, he cut his
thumb on the skull into another primary exposure, so they
had to get the post exposure shot. So you know,
it's it's one hundred percent fatal and it's almost one
hundred percent preventable both of those diseases. West Nile is
only about forty percent fatal, but you know, don't take
a chance. It's much cheaper to vaccinate for West Nile
(01:24:26):
and those horses that were Vactic team works well, and
of course rabies nothing we can do, but you you
sure don't want to get shot yourself, and you want
to keep the horses healthy. And one hundred percent fatal disease.
Speaker 3 (01:24:40):
Well, how's your cold doing.
Speaker 6 (01:24:47):
He's doing pretty good.
Speaker 8 (01:24:48):
I haven't heard anything on him, and he didn't send
me a bill to I haven't gotten the bill for
him yet. But the pitcher I got of him. He's
sure looked good. He's all he must be out in
the sun all the time because he is almost bucks.
So he must be enjoying the.
Speaker 3 (01:25:02):
Time when you're gonna come up with a look at him.
Speaker 6 (01:25:09):
September sometime.
Speaker 8 (01:25:10):
The students gave me a date last week, but it
was a I've got to go to a meeting at
the in Chicago for the A b m A, the
Veterinarians Association National Association. So they're gonna give me another date.
I haven't gotten one yet, So it's getting close. I
can't wait.
Speaker 3 (01:25:32):
Well, give me, give us, give us, keep us posting.
Speaker 8 (01:25:37):
Oh sure, Well they're already getting geared up, and I
am too. Their test schedules were always determined it. So
once they get it, give me another date. We'll we'll
get up there.
Speaker 3 (01:25:49):
Yeah all right, my friend, Well you have a good weekend.
Hopefully our good weather goes down to you.
Speaker 8 (01:25:58):
It's it's it's starting off good. We're a lot bare
we were two days ago.
Speaker 6 (01:26:02):
Forget it.
Speaker 3 (01:26:05):

you're back. All right. Well let's see where are we now?

Ursul and most of them thank you, you know, blah
blah blah, and Stewart puts cool. He said. His kids said, Dad,

Speaker 8 (01:26:57):
All love it.
Speaker 2 (01:26:57):
I think it's fun.
Speaker 3 (01:27:00):

nation to produce products exclusively for the horse, a practice
continued to this day. And that's why we say that
at McCauley Feed's it's all about the horse, alright, Moving
(01:30:43):
right along, Let's see what I want to look at
some of something else going getting black to black. Maria
who won the first Whitney as a five year old
mayor uh, spread by here you are stud was Colonel
field chi in anyway, she was the damn of adaptable,
(01:31:04):
who was Steeplechase steaks went and by the way, and uh.
She also had Parita who won the Fashion Stakes. She
was the grand Dame of Polynesian who, of course, when
the when the Preachers, the Withers, the Rigs, the Scarsdale,
the Toboggan, the Pageant of Roseman and Romsen Atlantic City
(01:31:24):
and Naugle Handron Handicap, the lawns running Sandicap the Ocean
called Pandicap and I can stop for the iron two
more for the hell anyway, Polynesians stood over at across

(01:31:51):
and they when the bread Native the dam of Native
Dancer at that farm by the way, Geesha was buried there.
Uh huh. And all I had to do was walk
across the road to Britherd. Is that fun? Yeah? Anyway. Also,
(01:32:13):
she was the grand dame of Papa Redbird. Now I
remember Papa Redbird. He was the son of Balladere. Pretty
good kind of racehorse one Arlington Classic, the dick Wells,
the Curtain Pandicap in the Ocean City Handicap. And uh,
Papa Redbird was by Balladier Balladere. Was this are also
(01:32:34):
of the Kentucky colonel who stood had stood over at
Patrin Wilkes farm and and uh he actually Balladeer stood
over there himself at Patrin Wilkes. Yeah, and she sold
(01:32:58):
that Kentucky colonel. Three they had three sons of Balladeers
standing over there they were offered, and there another stay
in or Balladaire, who was Blue Larkspur. Oh they could
have about Blue Larkspur or Balladeer, and they said they'd
(01:33:18):
take Balladeer because he was the younger of the two.
And well they did very well with him, no doubt
about that. You know, Herman good Pastor ran that farm
over a patching Wilkes. I know herman. Herman was one
of the good guys. And oh, here's the breeder of
white beauty. Oh yeah, the white thorough Yeah, the first
(01:33:42):
third bread in this country. And uh born four of
white and h I was talking to Herman. I remember
this distinctly. He says, Uh, I went to register and
the jockey Club wouldn't register, and I had all the
papers and everything like that, but she was white. And
(01:34:03):
he said, there's no such thing as a white their berd.
I said there is now, but anyway, but uh, anyway,
but he said, they eventually said they wouldn't registering me.
But they told me, I mean, we're going to test
everything you got on that farm, your teaser, whatever, the
(01:34:26):
neighbor's teaser, two tasers down the road, you know whatever.
And she'd better damn well test clean, clean, you know,
or you're gonna be ruled off for life. And I
got to thinking about it, he says. I got to
thinking about that. That's kind of scary. Yeah, he says,
(01:34:46):
But I thought about it, and I thought about it. Well,
I didn't, you know, the only teaser I had was
Bay And finally I gave in. I said, Okay, test away,
we'll see what happens. And they did. Yeah, and they
finally registered her. And it wasn't very long after that
that another white horse was sold over in France. Yeah. Yeah,
(01:35:10):
it was still horse Colt. Yeah, so that that kind
of relieves a lot of.
Speaker 2 (01:35:18):
But that there's a picture in here of a horse.
Is that gray Lake Bartley?
Speaker 3 (01:35:26):
No, he's not.
Speaker 2 (01:35:27):
He's gray. Huh Why but sure is white?
Speaker 3 (01:35:33):
Well he's got bathe it's like a pony, Yeah, this
one is. But that went on the wall.
Speaker 2 (01:35:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:35:41):
They used to train some horses here and they tried
to breed for that.
Speaker 4 (01:35:45):
Is that right?
Speaker 3 (01:35:46):
And I told a couple of people to say they
better stopped trying to breed those those things and try
to breed something that can run.
Speaker 2 (01:35:55):
So they weren't very athletic, they weren't.
Speaker 3 (01:35:57):
They didn't win. That was that one? Well, I think
that might have been the only only one. Wow, don't
you remember when we were doing the show. We were
at that time when it happened, nice lady. Yeah, they
were down from western Kentucky. I guess that's why they did.
But anyway, but anyway, White Beauty could run, you know
(01:36:19):
she would. I think she won the state fifteen. And
I know she once raises out there keen and but
poor her when he was.
Speaker 2 (01:36:32):
It's hard, that's awful. Can you imagine. I mean, you're
the mayors popped down and you're seeing feet come out
and the white gee win, and then you think, well,
socks quite la, you know, the legs, and the more
that comes out, the wider it gets. Good night, nurse who.
Speaker 3 (01:36:59):
All right, let's see what are we going to do now?
I think I read something just for the hell of
it from from them. I guess I read this one.
I got a couple of things of them marked here
(01:37:20):
on about our Carol and ones about Brownie Leech.
Speaker 2 (01:37:28):
Our carols from Newport.
Speaker 3 (01:37:31):
Yeah he had a bar for her, didn't he.
Speaker 2 (01:37:34):
Oh he had it in somewhere in Covington, and it
was a it was a restaurant and a bar, and
I was young, and I always wanted to go when
I knew they were going. And you know why, because
the walls were covered with wind pictures and I just
(01:37:56):
walked around, bumping into people looking at all those horsepapers. Yes,
I had a wonderful time.
Speaker 3 (01:38:02):
Well, I think I would read the one about Brownie Leech.
This is written by Joe Palmer about mister Leech the
tropical serenity of this winter ferry line. He wrote this
from Miami was brusquely disturbed last week by the arrival
from Kentucky of mister George Brownie Leech. Mister Leach directs
(01:38:27):
the public relations at Churchill Downs, and a part of
his mission was to advise one and all that the
Kentucky Derby will be to run on the first Saturday
in the next May, and you give the turf writers
preliminary training for the date of the derby is correct,
but no one should be misled by this. Mister Leech
(01:38:47):
has a great respect for the truth and uses it sparingly.
This was the time, for instance, away before Pearl Harbor.
There was this time away before Pearl Harbor, when his
family was dozing contentedly through the Beethoven six Pastoral Symphony
on a Sunday afternoon, when the music was interrupted by
(01:39:08):
an announcement that fighting had broken out on the streets
of Washington. The Army and Navy forces and such marines
as were available were fighting from behind barricades, but was
slowly being pressed back to a scant perimeter around the
White House. A little later, a breathless announcement was made.
Breathless announcement was made that a train bearing reinforcements in
(01:39:30):
Fort Dix had been detailed derailed by insurgents at Philadelphia.
There was a considerable to do and calling of them
neighbors and telephoning to the newspapers, before it was discovered
that mister Leeds had hooked a microphone into the loud
speaker of the radio and was in the basement drawing
on an imagination which has never yet been caught overdrawn
(01:39:53):
through great demands, though great demands had been made of it.
There was another occasion when mister Lee was walking down
a peacefully was walking peacefully down the street with an acquaintance.
A merchant, who was normally restrained, suddenly opened the door
with a stabishment stuck his head out and addressed mister Leech,
as follows you, lion bastard, then closed the door and
(01:40:16):
went about his business. This was because mister Leach had
been invited the day before to speak to the Lions Club.
He had explained that Keenan, having pioneered the Totalizata in
Kentucky and made the first experiment with a non profit organization,
had now embarked on another first in racing. It had
(01:40:37):
set steam pipes about five inches below the top level
of the racing strip and was prepared to make a
wet track into a fast one within two hours of
the falling of the last raindrop. There was some skepticism
about aboarded first, but mister Leech began to smother the
company on the figures about the amount of pipe view,
(01:41:00):
the number of elbow joints and t joints, shoes, and
incredul incredi dulity. He began to die the amount of
steam necessary to drive the track. He said, we'd pull
a ten car train from Cincinnati to New Orleans and
back as far as tad Noogert. Some of the lines
(01:41:20):
were as much as three days. Realizing that they'd been
sold a pup, but mister Leech's most skillful triumph over
veracity was on a trip from Lexington to New York
on a train called the George Washington, named for a
man who could not tell a lie, but frequently ridden
by people who can. Mister Leech's attention was engaged elsewhere
(01:41:43):
while it was The train went through Hipposody out of
Kentucky in the West Virginia state, inhabited by the Kowana'ha
Valley and probed for inhibitionists, where no liquor can been
sold on trains unless you count beer. As who would
not our heroes anyway, He chose his weapons, which was
(01:42:04):
a dull magazine, and went into the club car. He
seated himself next to two couples who were trying to
see what was at the bottom of a pair of bottles,
and began to read industrially about bird life and the illusion.
The company became increasingly convivial, so much so that one
of the gentlemen was asked to ask miss Leech if
(01:42:25):
they were disturbing him. He said no, that, aside from
losing his place a couple of times, he had not
been bothered at all. There was some further conversation, and
this elicited the information that mister Lee had been newly
graduated from the College of the Bible in Transylvania and
(01:42:46):
had been ordained and was on his way to his
first parsonage at Charlottesville. The celebrants was somewhat abashed, as
most people are when they discover a member of the
third sex among them, and hoped that they had not
given any offense to the clough. It turned out the
mister Leach was a broad minded clergyman. He said, as
(01:43:07):
far as he could see, the group had merely been
laughing and having fun, that the conversation, while occasionally tarret,
had been within proper bounds, and that he could see
nothing irreprehensible about the occasion. This was appreciated, and activities
on a more modern scale were re zoomed. With somewhat
longer acquaintance, mister Leech confessed to a longstanding curiosity about alcohol.
(01:43:33):
It had always been banned, if not actually abhorred, in
his family, and of course all of his mysterial training
sent him against it. Many of his colleagues, he said,
were fanatic about him, and yet he had known people
who drank who were very pleasant people. The attraction had,
far as the devoted had, always baffled him a little.
(01:43:56):
In fact, he admitted, shamefacedly, some time has been tempted
to try just to see what the fact it had.
There's nothing brightens the long train journey like getting a
preacher drunk. So one of the party shoved the bottle
over him. Go ahead, help yourself, he said. Mister leech
shot away from it like a coat from a flapping
(01:44:17):
paper on the track. I guess I couldn't, he said, doubtfully.
The bottle continued to fascinate him, as a snake is
supposed to do with the dove. He pit forth a hand,
and then withdrew it. Finally he steeled himself. After all,
he said, we don't know each other. Tomorrow you'll be
in New York and I'll be in Charlottesville, and it
chance says, oh, we'll never see each other again. If
(01:44:39):
I'm ever gonna try it. Hours the time before seemed inexperience.
He filled a tumble half full amid covert smiles and
nudges from the foe. I need not detain you the
rest of the story. Picture to yourself. Four persons journeying
liquoris through West Virginia, happy and the belief that they
(01:45:01):
had done something naughty, and mister leech re tying contentedly
to his roommate, securing the knowledge that the job had
been done.
Speaker 2 (01:45:10):
Oh that's funny. Let me see that. That's the George Washington. Yeah,
he had when I grew up Long Pass. After I left,
we had a camp and up on the river at
Roth and it was some fancy It was four bedroom
(01:45:34):
but you know, wooden, but it had two sides of
that big screen port. Anyway, we loved it. We were
up there all the time, even in the winter. We
go up on Sunday the George Washington. That train went
by every night at six o'clock and we'd an't run
(01:45:54):
around and yell and they would blow their whistle. For
one thing, there were a couple of places where cars
could cross the track and when it'd go by, they
had one of those pictures head of George Washington on
the caboose in the back, and that was the George Washington.
(01:46:16):
So I wanted to I had relatives that were worked
for the railroad and stuff. My first trip on a
train was from Cincinnati up to somewhere I don't know
West Virginia. And then I got a right back, but
it was the George Washington. I wonder if that still
(01:46:37):
run anyway. I wonder if he's any relation to Leach
here at.
Speaker 3 (01:46:47):
Oh Tom Tom, I don't know who? All right, Well,
seventh trave went the last Saturday, the going to Jim
Dandiye Theretoba Here's the best ree old in America is
also one of Belmont States. He is one of four
winners of the Kentucky Derby By in the Mischief, the
nation's leading sire in North America by a margin of
(01:47:09):
more than seven million dollars over the second rank sire,
and he is also the sire of a son that
is sided to Kentucky. Winner of Kentucky Derby, Golden Cents
and Golden Sense is in the midst of stablemate bright
Church spencerf Farm, Golden Census superior runner himself twice, he
won the Great One Breeders got Dirt miland just for
(01:47:31):
good measure, he won the Great One sent into Derby
and he earned more than three million dollars. And more important,
he's a sybamistic dan win of last year's Kentucky Derby
and Golden CeNSE is a whole lot more than a
one horse sire. He is the sire of Positano, winner
this year at the Grade one Madissist States right out
(01:47:51):
here at Keenan. He's also the cybe of multiple Grade
one States winning going to Vegas here and over nine
hundred and eighty nine thousand dollars. He's a Sarah by
my standards, a multiple Greatest Stakes winner. They placed in
the Grade one Whitney in the Grade one Metropolitan and
earned two million, two hundred ninety four thousand dollars. And
he is also instood at Spencery Farm, the breeders Farm,
(01:48:14):
the home of the nations leading Freshman Shire, leading second
crop sire and the top four third crops are So
now is the time to book for twenty twenty six
called There's a Brown or Daniel at eight five nine nine,
four years old thirty and the website is Spenceryfarm dot com.
Speaker 2 (01:48:33):
Okay, Sally Van, I saw another one just yesterday, one
of the big ones. They are so impressive look and
they are beautiful loaded up going to where I guess Churchill, Alice,
I mean it must have been going to Ellis Park.
(01:48:53):
They run the big vans Ellis and Indianapolis and those
kind of places for the races all the time, and
they're wonderful. They've been in business for more than sixty
years or longer, and during that time, many of the
(01:49:14):
greatest runners ever to step on the racetrack have been
entrusted to their care. And I saw them shipping Justify.
By golly, that's about as hot as it gets. Ship
and Justify. And I saw a picture a couple of
days ago of another real big time horse getting on
(01:49:36):
a Sally Vent. Anyway, you're going to go first class,
that's for sure. And let's see. They're always in great shape,
their beautiful rigs. A single most important safety factor is
the ability and experience of the person behind the wheel.
Their drivers. Experienced drivers and experienced horsemen, and.
Speaker 3 (01:50:00):
How you do it.
Speaker 2 (01:50:01):
So think about that the next time your ship your
horse across the county or across the country. Good enough
for Justify, it's good enough for me. So when you
load your horse.
Speaker 3 (01:50:12):
And huh sounds like a song. If it's good enough.
Speaker 2 (01:50:16):
Justify, it's good enough for me. Boom, oh, please don't
make me sing someone anyway, when you load it. I
used to love it when Betsy was in Pony Club,
because the Peirat kids were in Pony Club, and here'd
come up a box sali Van and they'd unload these
(01:50:39):
ponies that were so cute, and they had the little
things on the top of their heads and they had
all kind of raps on them and all that jazz.
I mean, they were so cute. Anyway, when you load
into sally Van, you know that the person behind the
wheels one of the best in the business. Folks at
sally Van wouldn't have it any other way, and that's
(01:51:01):
why for more than a half century, Sally Vans two
five five ninety four h six Sally Horse Vans two
five ninety four h six the safest way to the
winner circle.
Speaker 4 (01:51:17):
All right, now back to the Thoroughbred Training Center and
ursul ellis.
Speaker 3 (01:51:23):
Okay, they're running the test state for three of old
Phillies of Grade one today five hundred thousnd dollars pot
up at Saratoga. The first test stakes was run back
in nineteen twenty two and the winner was a Philly
named Motion Emotion out of Affection that's pretty good in it.
Good name by Friar Rock out of Affection and emotion
(01:51:46):
was he's got one of those pedigrees in it that
if I made the mistake in pushing the button for
pedigree on emotion, and I read out of paper before
I could finish what No, Yeah, it printed out about
ten pages of pedigree.
Speaker 8 (01:52:05):
You know.
Speaker 2 (01:52:05):
Well, you know to speak of I had to go
out to the garage and get another package.
Speaker 3 (01:52:11):
Of I saw that. Yeah. Well, anyway, emotion was by
Friar Rock. As I said out of she was the
damn of an old horse, pretty good horse by high
time who stood. We talked about him earlier. It was
a champion two year old coat of his year that
was in how strung it was his name nineteen twenty eight.
(01:52:34):
He won a pimical for turity in the ferturity at
Belmont and the Ocean of the Steaks. And it's just
one of those two year olds that could fly. And
she herself was a champion three year old Philly a
year emotion, great pedigree.
Speaker 7 (01:52:51):
And.
Speaker 3 (01:52:53):
Let me take a glance at it. What I can
find it? She was a grand got four minutes. Oh yeah,
Hilloe is some of the states races. She was a
damn well. I mentioned how she was of highstrung anyway,
I'm running out of time. But she won the first
(01:53:14):
Test Stakes back in nineteen twenty two and it was
quite quite a Philly in her own right. Well, we're
at the Third Bed Training Center at our Speed, and
it's a great place to train your horses. Yeah, if
you don't know where it is, if you're coming out
(01:53:35):
and leave Elexhington and go out to Paris Road, Pike
Pike and past the country Club, it's just about a
mile on down the road on the right, you can't
miss it.
Speaker 2 (01:53:48):
Yeah, great, it's great. And you know what I thought
about this? They really keep it up. Oh yeah, everything,
there's no planks down or any of that stuff. Do
a really good job. Yeah, it's said, except the cats
are tearing the screen out its door.
Speaker 3 (01:54:09):
Yeah, we've got about five caps.
Speaker 2 (01:54:10):
Well, I come over with my quarter and I push
that black in a corn down the air and keep
the mighty.
Speaker 3 (01:54:20):
So you know, you can bring an Ireland out here,
unbroken Ireland out here and break him here and uh,
no problem, because they've got fields and you can take
them out and start them out in you know, they've
got great great barns and they've got two tracks. You
start them out on the five ah mile track, yep,
and get them going pretty good. And then when they's
(01:54:41):
ready to get into serious training, you'd move up to
the mile track. And of course they've got a starting
gate here, they've got a clocker here, and it's it's
it's it's a great place to train your horses atmosphere,
out here, and the horses do real well.
Speaker 2 (01:54:58):
Yeah they do. And when you you train in a track,
you get all that noise and rack afternoon and.
Speaker 3 (01:55:04):
Stuff that's tough recommended.
Speaker 2 (01:55:07):
Yeah, here's just real quiet.
Speaker 3 (01:55:09):
There's a number to give him to call. Two nine
three eighteen fifty three State five nine number of What
do you got, Jackie, I've.
Speaker 2 (01:55:21):
Got Klan Library lecture series pre since Catherine Melon Moos
when Montana outraced the Each East. Good grief hardly the
rise of Western Thoroughbreds from eighteen eighty six to nineteen hundred.
(01:55:42):
Never heard of it?
Speaker 3 (01:55:43):
Oh yeah you do, Oh yeah, oh I didn't want anyway.
Speaker 2 (01:55:47):
This lecture is Wednesday, August twentieth, six thirty eight thirty.
Speaker 3 (01:55:51):
What was the name of the vet you worked for,
the name of veterinarian that you doctor McGee? He started
out there.
Speaker 2 (01:56:00):
No kidding, well I didn't know. That's how about that?
Speaker 3 (01:56:03):
That is wind Farm, Kentucky, Derby win to come out
of them they did. Yeah, gotta gotta run.
Speaker 2 (01:56:12):
Well anyway, It's Wednesday, the twentieth, out at the Kingland Library.
Oh very neat.
Speaker 3 (01:56:20):
Thank you Ressie, thank you Gavin, thank you for listening.
And we'll talk to you next week. H happy T.
