Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk presented by
the Lead Troop Barge Radio Network on six point thirty WLAP.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Welcome in Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I'm Anthony
White along with just Jack Pilgrim, coming to you from
Clark's Main Street Market Studios and beautiful downtown Lexington, Kentucky.
Larry Vault is way on vacation. I believe this week
it is can Coon, So Jack Pilgrim is going to

(00:30):
do his normal shift talk about some things history being
made possibly being made, as well as in the second
half we will have Van House come on talk about
a couple other things. But I did not start the
show off Jack Pilgrim saying good morning, because it's not
been a good morning as far. Running late. Get to

(00:54):
the parking garage where Bo so graciously got me after
what five years of Bo not doing this show, finally
getting a badge that I can just come right into
the elevator and come up without having to be escorted up.
And the thing doesn't work. It is nine oh one.
I'm down at the hotel. They said put your room

(01:15):
key in. I don't have room key because we work here.
I'm just swiping my bag ten, twelve, fifteen times, I
back up the ramp, Jack back all the way back
up the ramp and use the other side new access.
So wow, I only got like three minutes to get upstairs.
So I pushed the key as if I'm a person
that's staying at the hotel. So I don't know if

(01:38):
they're gonna expect me to pay, which I'm probably not
gonna do. But if that ticket that they printed out
continues to gain wages and over like the months and
months that I plan on continuing to doing this show,
that could be a huge fee. Jack poop.

Speaker 3 (01:56):
It reminds me of Jamal Adams getting locked out of
the jet facility and hard knocks or he's standing outside
with his room key going did I get cut?

Speaker 4 (02:05):
Did I get traded? Now you're.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
Not welcome in this building today, So I'm glad you
were not like Jamal Adams and then did get your
way in so we could get this show on the road.

Speaker 5 (02:17):
I'm glad you're here too, but you're not the only
one this has happened to. Yesterday, on one of our
other live shows on our other station, Horsetails, I was
out at the Thoroughbred center, and I had issues last
week too, and I got to get into that because
it's the craziest story ever in my thirty years of
doing radio. Yesterday I get a call from our boardop

(02:38):
here and he says, I've got an issue, and I'm
like what. He says, I can't get in? What do
you mean you can't get in? He goes, there's something
wrong with the key card. I can't get in to
the building. He said, I got into the garage, but
I can't get into the building. Your issue was you
couldn't get into the garage.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
And I was kind of questioning because you were on
the boards. The show starts in three minutes. How do
I contact you to get downstairs if once I got
in the garage, because I just pushed the hotel key
like like I just came here to get into a hotel.
And now if I don't make it up to the elevator,
now I'm kind of stuck because you don't have a

(03:19):
whole lot of time to come down and get me.
I guess we could let Jack wing the first hour.

Speaker 5 (03:24):
I would have put some commercial spots in and that
would have bought us at least a couple of minutes
to get you up here and everything. Last week and
this happens, you know where We've got so many people
on vacation, and so many different people are covering different shifts.
It's a part of radio, so things can be a
little bit confusing. Last Saturday, I'm out at the Thoroughbread

(03:47):
Center with Ursa Ellis, getting ready to do horsetails. I'm
producing and I'm engineering from out there. I text our
port out here, who is part time, and I said, hey, dude,
give me a call. We'll connect when you're ready. Now
that's it. Seven forty five. I get a text from him.
I'm sorry he was seven thirty five. I get a
text from him. He's like, man, I'm on vacation, I'm
in South Carolina. I don't know how I'm gonna do

(04:09):
that for you. So here's what I had to do.
I had to go from the backside of the Thoroughbread
Center off Paris Pike, come down to the studio and
get them on the air. And we had to do
it by a cell phone, and we made it work.
But I had eighteen minutes to get from the Thoroughbread
Center downtown and on the air on time, and pulled

(04:32):
it off.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
And if they would call me, I would have had
no doubt that you were gonna get it done. Though.

Speaker 5 (04:37):
It helps when there's nobody on the road at seven
fifty in the morning on a Saturday morning, so something's
going on with the key cars. There's gremlins floating around. Somehow,
we gotta get that taken care of this week somehow
for you.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
All right, Well, I don't know who's gonna pay for
that ticket I pushed in, so maybe I can give
to you. You can find somebody that that can. I
won't that, Camel.

Speaker 5 (05:00):
I will not say I'll get it taken care of
for you, but I will pass it along to make
sure somebody takes care of it for you.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
I appreciate that. I appreciate welcome Jack Pilgrim taking care
of people. You always take care of me whenever these
high school or lower then cannot stand that you couldn't
do it for college level. But when it's talking, when
you're talking about I guess scholastic events or AU and
those type of things you always get me in, got

(05:28):
me in the election, Catholic. I appreciate it. I didn't
see you there, though, so I want you to meet
my cousin, which after the show, I'm going back over there.
But I did not make it. I did not see you.
Did you did you get an opportunity to make an appearance?
I did not.

Speaker 4 (05:46):
I did not.

Speaker 3 (05:47):
It was, you know the way these weekend shifts work,
like today, I did cast our website is aline from
the right now all the way through the final buzzer
tonight and then you know, so those days off are
very very very very valuable here in the Pilgrim household.

(06:10):
So yeah, it was a don't touch, don't touch the phone,
don't touch the laptop.

Speaker 4 (06:15):
Disappear for as long as long as you can.

Speaker 3 (06:18):
So you know, we woke up, went straight over to
Katie's parents' house, and you know, had kind of a
pool party.

Speaker 4 (06:25):
Pool day.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
Yesterday was the day four mark every time I got
in a car that bad boy rechistered at ninety two
ninety five degrees somewhere around there, Jack, yesterday was a
day you are.

Speaker 4 (06:36):
Not lying, man.

Speaker 3 (06:37):
It is so apparently it's called a heat dome. I
had no idea what this was, but apparently it's just
when the heat gets trapped in in you know, ninety plus,
you know, pushing one hundred degree temperatures kind of stay
locked in for days, if not weeks. So we're in
the middle of one of those, apparently, And yeah, you

(06:59):
feel I mean, shoot, you walk to the mailbox and
you come back in and your shirt's durash and you
sweat pouring down your forehead. You're like, good grief, I'm
either way out of shape or this temperature is ridiculous,
and I'm praying for the latter.

Speaker 5 (07:11):
So it's going to be ninety eight degrees the first
pitch out of Omahall today for the College World Series.
Dan and I was telling Jack before we go on
the air, I'm gonna once to get out of here.
I'm gona hit the road and go see Willie Nelson
and Bob Dylan tonight up in Riverbende, Cincinnati, and it's
going to be ninety seven to ninety eight degrees up there.
I don't know if I'll make it back tomorrow or

(07:33):
later tonight. That was my plan to try back to Lexington.
I may be staying up there and recovering and just
come back tomorrow morning. You work for the school system,
you say you don't have to really be back. No,
I have to be back. I have to be back tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (07:46):
You can't. Billy ain't gonna hold you know, or Fia
County is expecting you to be back.

Speaker 5 (07:50):
No, I'm it's summer vacation. Even though I am working
this week, I have other things I need to take
care of. First thing tomorrow morning, so I'm gonna try
to make it back.

Speaker 3 (08:00):
Bo.

Speaker 5 (08:00):
You gotta enjoy yourself. Just enjoy, Just enjoy you hours, huh,
because you know what happens. Yeah, when somebody you grow do,
you go somewhere to everybody, some people up, some people.
This is why I'm taking a few hours tonight for
myself and going to enjoy. But when people go on vacation,

(08:21):
they're like, hey, you want to do this and fill
in for so and so and do this and that.
And I'm like, you know what, if nobody else wants
the money, I'll take it.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
So I work. I gotta I have to go back.
As much as I love you, Bo, my granddad told
me there's he's never seeing the Brins truck behind a hearse,
so all that money is not worth sanity.

Speaker 5 (08:44):
Just wait until I turn fifty, because that's when I'm
gonna slow down.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
Okay, at least I got at least you gotta at
least you gotta yeah, I got yeah. Okay, finish line,
Well that's not the right ter under the circumstances. So Jack,
I did want to ask. So you're gonna be Larry
Vautney throughout the show. You're gonna be writing articles throughout
the show because you said you start a KSR as

(09:08):
of now. So because it is you and I, we
won on one today. So you don't get a whole
lot of breaks as you do on a normal show.
But I can cut you some breaks in Bow and
I can cut you some breaks in there. I want
you to get your money because you're younger than Bow
and I, so your finish line is a lot further
than ours.

Speaker 3 (09:26):
We're multitasking, we're locked in.

Speaker 4 (09:28):
Baby, we're good. We don't have anything to worry about.

Speaker 3 (09:31):
And boa you need to appreciate the bonus that you're getting.
You're getting Willie Nelson, Bob dilln and apparently you're getting
Drew and Nick Lache to ninety eight degrees.

Speaker 4 (09:40):
Baby.

Speaker 5 (09:40):
That's oh, that was that was bad.

Speaker 2 (09:42):
That was bad.

Speaker 5 (09:44):
I know we're gonna have fun tonight. I'm looking forward
to Willie's one of my all time favorites, and I'm
going to enjoy it. And I've never seen Bob Dylan too,
even though he's up there in his eighties, but still
just to be in front of a rock and roll
legend and being able to see him on stage, I'm
going to enjoy him as well.

Speaker 4 (10:02):
They still tell you, can I tell you a Bob
Dylan story?

Speaker 2 (10:05):
Go for it.

Speaker 4 (10:06):
So my dad takes me to a concert.

Speaker 3 (10:08):
I must have been twelve thirteen. I was young, very young,
and it was a it is it a Slugger Field
and it was with John Mellencamp, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson,
and one more person I can't I can't remember. There's
a four of them though, and Bob was the headliner.
So I was there for John Mellencamp. I was a

(10:30):
big John Mellencamp kid, as a fan of the kid.
So saw Willie, saw John. And then Bob Dylan comes
up and he starts singing, and I look at my
dad and I go, is his microphone broken? And my
dad said no, that's exactly Oh yeah, that's exactly how
Bob Byllan sounds. I was like, oh, it doesn't sound

(10:53):
very good. He's like, yeah, that's kind of that's kind
of his thing. That's exactly you're you're hearing him in
the flesh, exactly how he's supposed to. I was like, oh,
people enjoy this. So I was young and you know,
uncultured at the time, and you know, just didn't understand
the artistry that went into, you know, his voice. But
the first time I ever heard his voice and in concert,

(11:14):
I thought his microphone was broken.

Speaker 5 (11:15):
Yeah, it is an acquired taste when it comes to
rock and roll and Bob Dylan and his vocal stylings.
But I think when you look down at the writing
and so many songs that he has done over the years,
and just how people gravitated to his message and his influence,
it makes him a legend. So, you know, I've never

(11:35):
seen Bob Dylan. I don't know what I'm gonna get
out of them tonight, but still I'm gonna have fun.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
I think you will. And before we go to break
and continue this show and officially start to talk about sports,
which is actually in the title of the show of
acquired taste, Jack Pilgrim. I went to Fu Trader Joe's.
I was hungry. We left Lexton catholet their hotels. Right back,

(12:00):
Trader Joe's gonna grab some fruit vegetables. I'm gonna be
healthy amongst the other things we took in. So let
me grab two of these bananas. Grab these bananas. These
are nice sized bananas, really green and big bananas. Get
to the hotel, Jack Pilgrim, sit down. I'm like, this
banana's hard to peel. I can't even get the skin

(12:22):
off of it picking up what I'm putting down? Do
you know what it was, Jack.

Speaker 4 (12:27):
Pilgrim, the display bana, the plastic?

Speaker 2 (12:32):
No, no, no, see, I'm not that dumb. I'm not
that though. Have you ever and I've had these served
to me and they look like bananas when they Have
you ever had a plantain?

Speaker 4 (12:44):
Yeah, planting?

Speaker 2 (12:46):
You fixed them or you've ate that.

Speaker 4 (12:48):
I've never. I've had them presented here.

Speaker 2 (12:50):
Right, So you don't know what it looks like? Yeah, like,
do you know what it looks like before it comes
to the plate. No, it looks like a banana. So
my cousins are making fun of me. Whatever, So you
was talking about a choir taste, So I find you
pillarles like this thing is not ripe all the way
I and my fingernails are getting filled back. I'm trying

(13:11):
to pill it up and I bite it into a
taste like chalk, because apparently you're supposed to fright or
cook it first before you eat it to make it softer.
But that was my yesterday, and I thought that was
interesting because if anybody else has ever had that happened
to them, then I want somebody to let my cousins
and Jack know that I'm not an idiot. You can
join the show too eight five nine two eight zero

(13:33):
two two eight seven eight five nine to eight zero cats.
You can also email the show at Sunday Morning Sports
Talk at gmail dot com. I am Anthony White and
we will be back after this. You're listening to Stockyards
Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk on news Radio six thirty WLAP.

Speaker 1 (13:48):
This is Stockyards Bank Sunday Mornings Sports Talk presented by
the lead Troop Boards Radio Network on six thirty WLAP.

Speaker 2 (13:58):
Welcome back Dockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk on Anthony
White along with Jack Pilgrim. Stockyards Bank is your trusted
partner since nineteen hundred of four, so head on over
to syb dot com for all your banking and financial needs.
Jack Pilgrim because we haven't talked basketball in such a

(14:21):
long time, and that's a good thing. Nobody's getting in
trouble or whatever. There's no coaching changes or anything like
that of that sort. There is one whether the schedules
come out, our conference schedules come out, but there's also
the idea, and I just want to get your take
on that because I want to get ahead of it

(14:42):
before the season comes, because if football gets off the rails,
we're going to need an outlet, not for as far
as media, but us as a fan base. We're gonna
need somewhere to go to calm. You call your soul.
And everywhere I look, otaga Oway is being talked about
in some manner being the poster child for UK basketball,

(15:05):
which is rightfully just really done. I think that's accurate.
I think he should be. My question to you, I
present you and I kind of present a big blue nation,
but I know you're closer to the program is last
year when Jackson Robinson came. The kind of question was
for the first probably two months, jack am I right.

(15:25):
The first couple months everybody looked at his body language.

Speaker 6 (15:28):
We did not.

Speaker 2 (15:28):
It was not bad. I don't think but I think
because he had in NBA aspirations and came back to
college for another year, people kind of just looked at
everything he did, like every time he does did something,
or if he didn't get enough shots, or if he
didn't take a shot already missed a shot, everybody critiquing him,
not saying we have that problem with Oway. But I'm
not certain that Mark Pope's style of offense or just

(15:52):
you know, brand of basketball in general is predicated around
one person. And that's why I thought Jackson did very
well last year as far as being a team player, Uh,
you know, getting involved when he needed to and not
rushing anything and not forcing anything. Uh do you see
all this attention being a possible problem or everything? Or

(16:15):
is everything the way you expected to be? Or am
I over exaggerating that Otago is getting the line's share
of attention.

Speaker 3 (16:27):
It's I think it's what you know, exactly what you
wanted from Otaga. I think I think when he decided
to come back, you're looking at, you know, how can
he boost his draft stock? What can he do to
you know, solidify himself from Okay, I'm an All SEC
second team member, but you know my goal is to

(16:47):
you know, become a you know all SEC first team
member en route to first round status in the draft,
and so you know where where what are the small
little details that he can pick up on and improve
improve upon to kind of hit those goals and you know,
leadership and becoming like they go to anchor like, hey,
this is my team, I'm the rider, die like this.

Speaker 4 (17:08):
You know, we kind of rise and fall with me
and my success.

Speaker 3 (17:12):
I think a lot of that is is Otega and
you know he has to take that ownership and the
leadership and the you know, this is my team, this
is my squad. I think he's done a bang up
job at that thus far. You know, just being at
some of those camps and just seeing him interact and
you know kind of just carry himself in a way
that would indicate like, hey, this is my team. I'm

(17:33):
ready for this moment, and I think it's it boats
extremely well for what he can be this season and
just kind of understanding, you know, this time last year
he was you know, seeing as not a nobody, but
you know he was going to be, you know, one
of the secondary role players.

Speaker 4 (17:47):
He's going to be.

Speaker 3 (17:48):
You know, hey, if things go really well, maybe he
can be you're kind of six Man of the Year
kind of you know vibe in the sec you know,
maybe he's a sleeper pick.

Speaker 4 (17:56):
You know, there's there's no sleeping on Otega Away. Right now.

Speaker 3 (17:58):
Everybody knows exactly who he is, exactly what he does well,
exactly what you know he needs to continue to get
better with. So now I think it's it's perfect to
kind of throw him into the limelight and say, hey,
this is what you signed up for, this is why
you came back.

Speaker 4 (18:13):
Now embrace it.

Speaker 3 (18:14):
So I think he's done a great job, and I
do think that there is a pass to first round
status this time next year because we do have the
NBA Draft in four days three days, so it'll be
a lot of fun and hopefully this time next year
we see Otega walking across the stage and shaking the
commissioner's hand.

Speaker 5 (18:33):
Hey, Jack, how much credit do you give Mark Pope
for and even his teammates, how much credit do you
give them to put the responsibility on Otega Oway being
at Kentucky over the last year and going into this season.

Speaker 3 (18:49):
Yeah, I think Pope, you know hearing you know, some
folks close to Otega as the year went on. And
you know, when you there are times that you just
kind of to hear, Hey, this kids leaning toward a transfer.
This kid, you know, isn't liking this. You know, I
remember a couple of years back, Chris Livingston in January
hearing that there were some real internal stuff going on

(19:14):
that they were dealing with and that it kind of
became problematic in that locker room. And it was as
cool as the year went on. When you have situations
like that, both at Kentucky and everywhere, I mean, it's
in a you know, when you have so many different
faces and voices in the locker room, sometimes stuff like
that happens. To hear the total opposite with Otaga, where

(19:36):
it was Otaga could not be more impressed and isn't connect,
couldn't connect with a coach anymore, couldn't believe in a
coach to unlock the best version of his abilities more
than Mark Pope has for Otaga. And you know, just
hearing from Otaga say, you know, during the draft process,
he wasn't calling and texting me every single day and

(19:56):
just begging and pleading with me to come back, and
you know, please do the right thing, Please do this
for me please come back. It was, Hey, you know
what you have coming back, you know, for for a
senior year at Kentucky.

Speaker 2 (20:09):
What that would look like.

Speaker 3 (20:10):
You know, the money is obviously a big part of that,
but you know, you have the money, you have the role,
you have a stardom, you have the you know, the trust,
and yet whatever you need from me, I'll be able
to do that. And he was just able to kind
of let him do his thing and go through that
process by himself, without just having somebody constantly nagging in
his ear, and he ended up coming back right where

(20:31):
you know, Pope and the rest of the coaching staff
thought he would. So yeah, I think Pope deserves a
ton of credit for establishing that trust and getting getting
to this point.

Speaker 2 (20:39):
That is Jack Pilgrim. We will be back after this.
You were listening to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk
on news Radio six thirty WLAP.

Speaker 1 (20:46):
This is Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk, presented by
the lead Troop Boards Radio Network on six thirty w LAP.

Speaker 2 (20:55):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Moan to sports Talk on
Anthony Why Alone with Jack Pilgrim and our man Bol Robinson.
This hour of Sunday Morning Sports Talk is brought to
you by a country boy Brewing talking UK basketball. At
this point, there's the first. I don't know how much
faith I put in to the first preseason awards. We

(21:20):
have some football players, which is interesting. We will get
to that probably at the next hour. But we are
talking to UK basketball because we haven't talked to UK
basketball in a long time, and there's been a whole
lot of heat on our football team. So I'm giving
you guys an exit playing if things doesn't go well

(21:41):
in football this year. Jack Pilgrim is gonna let us
know why he has hope in Pope and Jack. When
we were talking before before we went to break, I
was asking you about oh Way. You answered my question,
but more of my question is, well, the bigger question
is do you see everything going through oh Way? Say
we need a bucket, say thirty seconds left down by one?

(22:05):
Do we go iso with o Way? Because you made
it sound as if you know he's prepared for this
moment he wants to raise his stock for the NBA.
But I know in my playing career, my senior year,
every time, why I didn't drop a whole lot of passer.
But if you didn't break a ten yard run. If
I didn't break a seven yard run, you get stopped
for two and maybe you know, there's some Some people

(22:27):
are gonna say that was a tough, greedy run. Some
people are gonna say he should have broke that tackle.
But all that is sitting in the back of your mind,
Every single play is sitting in the back of your mind.
So I appreciate your answer, but I don't think I
got the answer I was looking for it, And maybe
the listeners may appreciate what I'm trying to get out
of you, But do you is it ever gonna be

(22:47):
a point and that's why I brought up Mark Pope
style of play? Is ever gonna be a point where
we need a bucket and it's gonna be iso oh way?
Or you're saying he's just prepared, he's the one to
grab your jersey, he's the one to be in the
locker room, you know, let's get focused. Or is he
just a poster guy who everybody knows and next spectations
are gonna be high for or does everything go through him?
Is what I was asking you.

Speaker 3 (23:11):
I think we have a pretty solid sample size of
otega Oway just his this past year, you know, with
video evidence to prove that when the going gets tough
and we need a bucket, that Mark Pope wants that huddle.
He gets in that huddle and he throws the clipboard
of the ground and says, oh, take get the ball
to Otaga away.

Speaker 4 (23:30):
And get the heck out of the way.

Speaker 3 (23:32):
And we saw that with two game winners and him
going coast to coast and just doing his own thing
and finishing and you know, putting the team on.

Speaker 4 (23:40):
His back for the win.

Speaker 3 (23:41):
So yes, I absolutely positively believe that Otaga will be
that guy once again. I trust him, my faith in
him to go get downhill and you know, finish and
hit big shots and you know it's it's kind of
been his his thing since he first arrived. But I
do think that there's a lot of value in the
type of roster Mark Pope built this this offseason where

(24:03):
there's so much more athleticism and length and you know,
guys that can beat you off the drivel and you know,
I try. I trust Jalen Low to be that guy.
I trust, you know, Mohamed Diabat to be a stronger,
more physical uh you know forward that we didn't really
have last year that we kind of needed, you know,
when we need, you know, need a tough bucket. He
can definitely give you that, and you just go down

(24:24):
a list. I think there are a lot of really
strong options that are capable of doing that.

Speaker 4 (24:29):
Now. Do we have the the shooting prowess.

Speaker 3 (24:33):
And the you know, that type of upside that you know,
we definitely had with last year's group where they could
just pop off, you know, twenty made three pointers and
totally changed the outcome of a game. That I think
is probably the bigger question I think, you know, but
I think that's something to keep an eye on. Where
the shooting is going to come from. You're kind of
hoping and praying that Jalen Low's you know, low shooting

(24:56):
efficiency last year was just kind of a one off
and you you know, well, he'll be able to grow
that in a better system with people around him. Can
Cam Williams be a dynamic shot maker? You know what
about Andrea Yeleovich. Can he be kind of an Andrew
Carr stretch for you know, catch and shoot guy who
can make shots for you. There are a bunch of
those types of question marks that I think there are

(25:17):
definitely more questions about the shooting than the athleticism. You know,
somebody that's capable of just go going and getting you
a bucket. But I do think there are plenty of
those guys, headlined by Otaga away obviously.

Speaker 2 (25:28):
And my my question more is if O way, say
file trouble always not hitting today or maybe they're doubling.
Oh way, it sounds like you keep saying low first.
A lot of people act like Jalen is I don't know,
or you know, Aberdeen, you got some guys that we
can get inside. Maybe do we we go inside? What's
our second option after Oway? Is it just running a

(25:50):
pope system? Who do you who do you have faith
to have the ball in their hands? If we need
a bucket? Always off or always out of the game.

Speaker 4 (25:59):
Yeah, there are a ton of options. I really do
like Jayalen Lowe.

Speaker 3 (26:02):
He's a you know, paint touch getter, just his athleticism,
He's kind of a slithery guard who you know, kind
of just crafty finishes.

Speaker 4 (26:12):
I do have a lot of faith in his ability there.
But yeah, Aberdeen is right there with him.

Speaker 3 (26:18):
You know, he was, you know, a key piece in
Florida's national championship run, and you know, there's a lot
of expectations internally on Florida side that he was going
to be kind of that guy for them next offseason,
and his kind of situation went Wonkee and led him
to the transfer portal, and you know, we're fortunate to
you know, that he made that decision and we're going

(26:40):
to get the you know, the good side of that.
But I think those two are definitely the main names
to watch, But I mean there are a ton I
do think that the Kentucky's front court is going to
be better than last year's as well, especially if you
know Jaden Quainton's can get as healthy as we're expecting
him to and playing as many games as we expect
them to. I wouldn't be shocked to see a lot

(27:01):
of stuff, you know, drawn up for him. And you know,
his superstar potential I think is going to shine through
in several opportunities as well. So I definitely have a
lot of faith and you know, options across the board,
maybe not one go to guy, but everybody across the
board will be capable in that regard.

Speaker 2 (27:19):
And what does our what does our freshman class look
like look like? There's been some some movement, What does
our freshman class look like, and who's the first freshman
off the bench? Are do we are? Are we not
going that? Not going to play?

Speaker 4 (27:32):
Hmm, Yeah, that's a tough one.

Speaker 3 (27:34):
Just coming back from Colorado Springs this week where we
got to see Jasper and Malachi where USA across their
chest and you know, represent Kentucky and their home cities
extremely well against the best U nineteen competition in the world.
Is essentially they're going to go compete in the FEEB
World Cup. And Jasper made the final twelve roster yesterday

(27:56):
or two days ago. That was a pretty cool deal
for him as a as a elect native. So I
am higher on them after seeing them against some of
the best of the best. I think they both were
absolutely terrific in Colorado Springs against really good competition. I
think Jasper, uh, there's a lot more writing on him
to be success, you know, more successful early because you know,

(28:18):
as we've talked about with the shooting, you know, questions
where they come from, who is going to step up
and in that regard, Jasper is going to be one
of those guys that kind of has to step up
in that regard and be the shot maker of this team,
and he showed that. I think he you know, kind
of put his best best foot forward as a as
a shooter out in Colorado Springs and and definitely show.

Speaker 4 (28:38):
NBA scouts who kind of had some questions about him.

Speaker 3 (28:42):
And he's kind of a polarizing prospect in that regard.
I think he proved a lot of his skeptics wrong
out in Colorado Springs. So I think he's going to
be the first player off the bench, you know, among freshmen.
Maybe he starts a couple of games. I think he's
in the conversation for that, you know, starting wing spot
along side Otega away, depending on how things go, and

(29:02):
and you know, the fall training camp, preseason, summer workouts.

Speaker 4 (29:06):
All that stuff, we'll we'll have to see.

Speaker 3 (29:08):
But I do think Jasper will be the guy, and
you know, Malachi who'll get some spot minutes. And I
think Brandon Hawthorne he's he's gonna be a sneaky contender.

Speaker 4 (29:18):
To fight his way into the rotation too.

Speaker 3 (29:20):
But I you know, I think Jasper's probably the far
and away favorite to earn a media playing time.

Speaker 2 (29:26):
Before we get to the big ass fans hotlined. Uh So,
Malachi did so none of the Kentucky guys outside of
Jasper's only Kentucky got to make the USA team.

Speaker 3 (29:38):
Yeah, so Malachi kind of went down, Funky came up
and you kind of just when you tweak tweak something
and you just can't really you know, work it out,
and just you know, it's kind of a more discomfort,
just can't kind of get the you know, get it
worked out. It's one of those deals. And it was
just kind of bad timing where the cut happened. You know,

(29:58):
after the morning session on Monday. He kind of tweaks
it on that in that morning session or in scrimmages.
So right before cuts. There was a kind of a
plan for initially for both Kentucky signees.

Speaker 4 (30:13):
To you know play the whole week.

Speaker 3 (30:15):
Once we got to the final cuts, that both would
withdraw and return to Lexington with Mark Pope and you
know get those summer workouts started. But you know, I
think Jasper, when he realized that he was kind of
a shoe in to make the team and that he
could do it, he hat some internal backing from you know,
Mark Pope and his staff to be like, hey, you know,
got a gold medal one of your last chances, you know,

(30:38):
with these guys with this U nineteen squad to go
win a gold medal again after he did it last summer,
why don't you go do it again, Go go put
on for the city and you know, go go bring
back a gold medal. So I think that took some
internal pushing for Jasper, and you know, he was like, hey, yeah,
all right, cool, Yeah, I'm definitely down.

Speaker 4 (30:54):
So he's going to go do that.

Speaker 3 (30:56):
And Malachi was kind of in the same boat where
initially he was going to with with draw, then was
interested and was going to put push forward, and then
the injury kind of happened at bad timing right before
the cuts, and he went back to all right, well,
I'm not gonna you know, read risk further injury or
reaggravated or.

Speaker 4 (31:14):
Anything more than I already dealt with.

Speaker 3 (31:16):
So he just kind of went back to the original
plan and with withdrew himself went back to Lexington and
is getting summer workouts started with you know, our strength
and conditioning program and you know treatment center and.

Speaker 4 (31:27):
All that stuff.

Speaker 3 (31:27):
So kind of bad timing for Malachi, but now he
was he was the second best big in the event.
If if you ask me, behind mores Johnson at Michigan.
I think Morees was was spectacular and he's.

Speaker 4 (31:38):
Going to have a great year for Michigan. But man,
I thought Malachi was just absolutely tremendous.

Speaker 2 (31:43):
Wish all the best for nephew Jasper. But let's get
to the big ass fans hotline and see what John
Short has to say. Good morning, John Short, what do
you get for US.

Speaker 6 (31:55):
Americans?

Speaker 2 (31:55):
You're a great American yourself?

Speaker 6 (31:58):
Man? This wasn't it? Heard the last on the knees?
And I know, I don't know if y'all know about
we've got women's fester coming from twenty six twenty seven
seasons year about that from Canada?

Speaker 2 (32:09):
Because if you follow, if you follow Jack Pilgrim, uh
you catch all that stuff savvy swords?

Speaker 6 (32:18):
Is he a guard or Florida Center?

Speaker 4 (32:19):
And what.

Speaker 2 (32:22):
Shix's one guard? Jack Pilgrim? Are you uh wing wing wing?

Speaker 4 (32:28):
Yeah, listened as a shooting guard, but technically a wing.

Speaker 6 (32:34):
That's good. So I mean it should be a mistakes
only Candace she should be here for four years then.

Speaker 2 (32:40):
Four Yeah, if she does good enough, you could only
be it could just possibly be three though John Short,
Ryan Howard only stayed three years, right, Jack.

Speaker 6 (32:52):
Say four years?

Speaker 2 (32:52):
What's she here?

Speaker 3 (32:53):
Four years?

Speaker 6 (32:55):
Yep?

Speaker 2 (32:56):
I thought she left as four years. I thought she
left out.

Speaker 6 (33:00):
All right, because he's on the team when when she
was on the team would be South Carolina for the
Hcterment Championship and there was made that winning basket.

Speaker 2 (33:08):
Gotcha? What else you got for us?

Speaker 6 (33:11):
Yep? That's pretty much about it. And that's pretty much
about it.

Speaker 2 (33:17):
Who you got tonight in the championship? Man Shay Gillis,
Shay Gilgess, Alexander he he bring the trifecta, the m
v P Finals, MVP and in the championship Or are
you I know you're not Indiana fan, Josh Short.

Speaker 4 (33:34):
Don't.

Speaker 6 (33:34):
I don't follow pretty much inboy the NBA. But if
I see Gills was saying, do a great job and
if he wins, and I over on Sun wins the
championship because I think Billy Dovand coach Oklahoma Sunday, former
Flada basketball coach, he did and that and that that impressed.

Speaker 2 (33:53):
That makes you smile? Are you just stating the fact,
I just.

Speaker 6 (33:57):
Ain't want to side. He's the assistant here, it used
to be assistant. You're Kentucky under ten down in ninety four.

Speaker 2 (34:03):
That's true. So once so once. Once they're Kentucky, they're
always Kentucky with you. You're not one of those fans
who boot boot them when they leave, right, You just
love them, period.

Speaker 6 (34:12):
No, I don't.

Speaker 2 (34:13):
Okay, that's right. That's me too.

Speaker 6 (34:16):
I don't be anybody. When Caliprady came here and we
play against calipra I didn't be. He had a lot
of fans, did I didn't see.

Speaker 2 (34:24):
That's why we love you, John Short. We appreciate the call.
John Short. You stay safe out there and uh tune
in tonight might be a little bit past your bedtime.
At eight pm tonight you can watch Shay bring home
the championship because I'm calling it, calling my shot, Jack Pegrim,
I want to find that your shot, won't we come
back from break? You were listening to Stockyards Bank Sunday
Morning Sports Talk on news radio six thirty wl AP.

Speaker 1 (34:46):
This is Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk, presented by
the Lead Troop for its radio network on six thirty
w l a P.

Speaker 2 (34:56):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I'm Anthony White,
along with Jack Pillar and bol Robinson. We are talking
to UK basketball. Speaking of UK basketball, shake Gil just
ask Xander will be playing for a world championship todate
tonight eight pm, so support our cats. I don't know if.

Speaker 4 (35:21):
She way.

Speaker 2 (35:22):
Is he still in Indiana, whether activated or not, jack Piler,
I didn't think.

Speaker 4 (35:26):
About that now he is with the Utah Jazz now.
But technically Isaiah Jackson is.

Speaker 3 (35:33):
Still on the Thunder, but he tore his achilles earlier
in the season, so he's been a d NP all
season long.

Speaker 2 (35:41):
But don't forget about Cason Wallace too.

Speaker 4 (35:43):
We got Cason on the Thunder as well.

Speaker 2 (35:46):
Yeah, see didn't case two didn't caston miss game four,
game Game three shot to win the game, I believe.

Speaker 3 (36:01):
So he's he's had an up and down. Yes, he's
had an up and down stretched So maybe maybe tonight's
his night. Maybe maybe this is gonna be his breakthrough performance.
What's funny is like you look at the like Finals
MVP candidacy and it's it's basically Shay gildas Alexander or
they have no idea who else, because like if the

(36:22):
if the Pacers win, like Halliburton can't win it, I
mean he could if he goes nuclear tonight, but you know,
he's had such an up and down with the injury
and all that. Like Pascal Siakle Siaka might be the guy.
So it could kind of go all over the place,
how depending on if if the Pacers win. They definitely
have no idea who's gonna win finals MVP. I mean

(36:44):
it could be TJ McConnell. I mean, it's all all
all over the place. And if you know, if Shaye
doesn't play, you know, super well, and you know, say
Payson goes nuclear, you know, maybe he could kind of
sneak his way into you know, because of the importance
of tonight the game, maybe he sneaks his way in
the finals and contention. So I don't know, It's gonna
be a very fascinating night for sure, especially for us

(37:07):
in the bb N parts.

Speaker 2 (37:09):
I did have to ask, I'm gonna ask you a
question about high school basketball because I want to save
this conversation. Van hous is gonna join us so we
can get our trio back. You're gonna join us at
ten o'clock instead of ten thirty one you leave. We're
gonna have a little overlap because that's kind of how
I want to do the thing, but Jack Bo based off.
Will you tell Jack? Will you tell Jack? And Jack

(37:32):
tell me if you think tonight would have been a
good day for Bo to take this bet?

Speaker 4 (37:36):
What was that?

Speaker 2 (37:36):
Bogus bet? You too? Let me explain something I don't know.
We can't even talk about betting on here, so for.

Speaker 5 (37:43):
Everybody else does so why not? First of all, gambling
should be illegal. I hate gambling. I hate sports gambling.
I placed twenty responsibly, responsibly. I placed twenty dollars on
somebody to break elgend Baylor's I think sixty four point
NBA Finals scoring record the other night during Game six,
and I put twenty dollars on it. All I needed

(38:05):
was shake gilges Alexander to score sixty four to sixty
five points. That's all I was asking for. I thought
the return was going to be pretty good for twenty dollars,
and damn if it didn't happen.

Speaker 2 (38:16):
So Jack went today be that day because he's got
to leave it all on the table. So if he
was going to bet for shade of his sixties sixty five,
wouldn't it be wouldn't today be a pretty good shot?

Speaker 4 (38:28):
Hey, it's not my money, Bud, if he wants to
bet it. I'm cool betting other people's money.

Speaker 3 (38:33):
Yeah, I got. I put the house on it that
I support your efforts.

Speaker 4 (38:36):
I'm not gonna do it. I'm not gonna do that.

Speaker 5 (38:38):
Well, what I was telling Anthony was I'm not one
to bet one hundred dollars. I'm not even one to
bet fifty dollars on anything. I'm not going to put
five dollars on something just to get two dollars back.
So I felt like twenty dollars would be a good
return to win something, just completely outrageous.

Speaker 2 (38:56):
And that's what I did.

Speaker 5 (38:57):
And I lost my twenty bucks. And it's not like
I never liked twenty bucks on horse racing before. But
after that, I said, you know what, no more NBA
and gambling.

Speaker 2 (39:04):
I'm done.

Speaker 5 (39:05):
Gambling should be illegal in the state.

Speaker 2 (39:07):
I'm not for it. I don't like it, really, And
then I threw my phone at the wall really quickly,
Jack before we go to break. Speaking of winning and
lose it, you did you know like on these showcases,
these high school showcases or scholastic showcases now that if
a team goes into because you know, there's so many
games back to back to back if they go on
overtime after the tip ball, this is the first team

(39:28):
that scores.

Speaker 3 (39:30):
Yeah, it's sudden that I've seen that several times.

Speaker 2 (39:35):
Wow, that was my first time seeing it. That is
Jack Piram. That ain't my first time talking to him.
When we come back, we'll have Van Howes join the
show as well. We'll be back after this year. To
