Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk presented by
the Lee Troop BOARDGE Radio Network on six point thirty Wlap.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Berks at first the winning run. Cameron squares and bounces it.
Speaker 3 (00:13):
That's a fair ball bare handed and babble by the catcher.
Wait throw his missed, it rolls in the right field,
berks the third. They're sending him home. Here comes the
throw from Bride and Kentucky wins. Kentucky wins.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Wow, what a finish.
Speaker 4 (00:31):
I'm gonna tell you, bo, that was a great way
to end that fifteen inning game yesterday. And I really
also enjoyed listening to the broadcast because it seemed like
there were a lot of really boisterous fans there that
had some great one liners that you could kind of
hear filtering from the stands through the broadcast, and I
enjoyed that.
Speaker 5 (00:52):
If anything made it through the radio yesterday, my apologies,
I couldn't catch them all, but based on appropriate descriptions
from Keith Madison and Darren Hendrick, yeah, they were colorful
and creative. And some of them, let's just say, maybe
the clean ones, the suitable ones, the PG ones, maybe
they were I don't want to put this very directive
(01:14):
to the home plade umpire. We were talking about it
when we came in here. I think it was in
the sixth inning he made that really bad call about
the batter stepping into the pitch, and Nick Minjeon went
off and got injected.
Speaker 4 (01:27):
Yes he did, but maybe as upset as I've ever
seen Nick Minjeon because I was trying to watch on
TV but also listening to the Darren and Keith call
the game, and as you and I were talking about,
there's plenty of times I think maybe Kentucky batters do
sometimes kind of lean into pitches, but I don't think
that was one of them, which again wasn't as bad
(01:47):
to me that the umpire made that call, but when
they reviewed it, they didn't change it. Because I don't know,
but I can certainly see why Nick and he had
a lot of time because that was in what the
six innings, so he had nine more innings sit in
his office and watch the game there for the next
three hours.
Speaker 5 (02:03):
Yeah, and I think there's a clip somebody asked him
what he did. He said he'd cleaned the locker room.
Why I had to sit out?
Speaker 4 (02:10):
Yeah, Well, he had plenty of time to clean it
and clean it again.
Speaker 5 (02:12):
But my first thought about the call and Nick me
and Jim going off that umpire was disguised as Dugshaws.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
Oh he's easy now now.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
So well, if you happen to be at the baseball
game yesterday and you liked to call us here on
Stockyards Bank Sunday morning sports Talk, you could get on
the Big As Fans hotline and give us a call
at eight five nine two eight two two eighty seven.
Be happy to hear from you.
Speaker 5 (02:35):
That game was fifteen innings yesterday. I told you I
walked in here at eleven fifteen yesterday morning. I didn't
walk out of here until six o'clock yesterday afternoon. It
was so bad, it was so long. Billy Rutledge, he
just texts me and he said, wellness check, And that
was at five o'clock. I said, I'm dying over here.
Speaker 4 (02:54):
Jack, to be glad you didn't take your son to
baseball yesterday.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
Absolutely not five hours.
Speaker 4 (03:02):
It would have been a little much for that.
Speaker 5 (03:05):
I had a few questions about, so go ahead.
Speaker 6 (03:07):
A five hour game that means a person was hit
by It was a person hit per hour. It was
five people hit by balls. That's probably why Nick me
Jone was upset. Although as you said, Larry, I don't
know if they leaning into the ball or not. They
ranked like third and that third in the nation by
being hit by pitches.
Speaker 4 (03:28):
I don't know if they lean on it, but I
don't know if they lean in, but they don't bail out,
I'll put it that way. And they crowded.
Speaker 6 (03:34):
You get five people hitting one game the nick, it
should be six after that because somebody need to rush
the mound like them good Old what they call them,
Donnie Brooks.
Speaker 4 (03:42):
I think they. I think Bobe disagree, but I think
Kentucky Baseball likes getting.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
Hit by pitches.
Speaker 4 (03:48):
That's just part of their offense. That's what they factor
in with the way they crowd they played and try
to get on your nerves and do that.
Speaker 5 (03:55):
I think there's a certain element of toughness when you
get hit by pitches.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
Yeah, why I get hit I pitch? I believe I'm
returning to favor.
Speaker 4 (04:05):
Well, sometimes the crowd that played it happens. I mean,
pitchers aren't perfect.
Speaker 5 (04:09):
Remember that I was at the game Friday night and
it wasn't too bad as long as you dressed appropriately.
I mean, we've done worse and football games. It was
a lively crowd for a Friday night, cold and everything,
and Cats lost to Texas and then they bounced back yesterday.
So between Darren Heddrick's call, Nick Minjeome getting thrown out,
batters getting head fifteen innings, and the creative descriptions we
(04:32):
were just talking about from the Big Blue Nation over
there at Kentucky Proud Park, Kentucky baseball is the WWE
of college baseball right now?
Speaker 2 (04:41):
Yeh? Does Darren get overtime?
Speaker 6 (04:43):
Does he get paid overtime for over for extra innings
or does he make the same wages?
Speaker 5 (04:46):
He did address that yesterday. He said he would get overtime,
he'd put it in on his time card, and he
thinks he should get hazard paid to.
Speaker 4 (04:55):
And I'm gonna guess good luck with both of those,
but we will see.
Speaker 7 (04:58):
Jack.
Speaker 4 (04:59):
I did have a a lister send me a text
message wanting to know, since we talked about Zach Calzada,
what did you think of Cutter Bowley yesterday from what
you saw during the scrimmage.
Speaker 7 (05:12):
I really you know, some of the drives stalled out
a little bit, but I really like just uh the
physical tools and then you know his ability to get
out and scramble. You know, he did some really interesting things.
He jumped out. You know, being there in person, it
looks like he's put on some weight and you know,
really carrying himself, you know, larger than he did last season.
(05:35):
Definitely looks like, you know, he's hitting that strength and
conditioning program and looking like a you know, very obvious
future of the of this of this program. You know,
obviously Zach Calzada's team for now, and you know it's
going to be you know, kind of a one and
done deal with him as Cutter gets ready. But I
think there are very obvious tools there that suggests he'll
(05:57):
be ready to roll when when he takes a job
next season.
Speaker 4 (06:02):
And Anthony had another question sent to me about our
buddy Anmore Stewart. And the person sent this to me
and said, what wasn't a just just wondering that there
wasn't anybody on the defensive line that just jumped out
at him? Is that a good or a bad thing
that they didn't have one that just jumped out as
(06:22):
being that much better than everybody else.
Speaker 6 (06:26):
You'll never hear it from an war like I said,
even when Diana Walker was there.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
No, you didn't hear all you heard about what he
can't do.
Speaker 6 (06:32):
And he got to get his fat blank blanket in
shape and da da da da.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
But he talks a lot about Goosta.
Speaker 6 (06:41):
He talks a lot about him that he thinks he's
gonna be a player, and I think he's more of
I think he believes he could mold anybody into playing
as long as the efforts there. Because Kendrick Gilbert was
a guy. And I'm gonna be honest with you, Larry,
and we're gonna give you some new I'm gonna be honest.
And not only at that position. There were a lot
(07:03):
of cancerous guys that nobody talks about. I know there's
one or two three maybe the people talk about. And
I've said this on the show. Me and and work
talk about this all the time. If the leader in
the room is slacking or cutting corners, then that allows
everybody else. And as a coach or a position coach,
if you allowed a leader in that room to you know,
(07:24):
you running gassers. And I've always been the type and
I've always had trainers.
Speaker 1 (07:29):
This is Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk presented by
the lead Troop Borts Radio Network on six point thirty WLAP.
Speaker 4 (07:39):
Welcome back to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. This
hour Sunday Morning Sports Talk is brought to you by
a country boy brewing the favorite brew of our former
Sunday morning host Mark Berger. But again, want to talk
about a couple of different things. One that item a
half kind of forgot to mention. I don't want to
do that. Not let Jack a chance to come in
(08:01):
on this. But the Nike Hoops Summit game was last night,
and to say the least, guys really disappointed that we
only got to see Jasper Johnson and Malachi Marino play
a total of thirteen minutes. I know the coaches basically
went with their starters for the majority of the game,
but I thought both those guys would get to play
a little bit more than that. Still a great experience
(08:22):
for him, but Jack was a little disappointed they didn't
get each didn't get a few more minutes on the
court during the win.
Speaker 7 (08:30):
Oh, they got screwed, Larry oh Man, I was fired
up watching that game last night. I'll tell you what
I'm I get it. Like I know there's basketball politics
I know, you know, you got to put a bigger
spotlight on the boozers because you got Carlos sitting there,
You got Carmelo Anthony sitting there. Like I understand it.
You know, in Ajed advance, you know, generational talent. You know,
(08:53):
obviously he's going to get a spotlight. But I just
don't get it, Like this is an all star event.
You know, we're not here to hand out participation trophies.
And I get, like, I understand how rotations work, but
you know, when you have a field of of all
star level talents, everybody there is both you know, belongs.
You know, this is one of the last events. They're
(09:15):
going to arrive on college campuses here in two months,
and you know their their their high school careers or
are ending, and this is their last two raw. Especially
for a guy like Jasper, you know, he gets snubbed
in the McDonald's game, where you know, all of these
same guys got to show off their talents two weeks
ago on the national stage. This is Jasper's first real
chance to do so, and you know, for him to
(09:36):
get limited to five minutes, it just felt like he
got an unbelievable quick pull. You know he'd miss a
shot and you know, five seconds later get pulled from
the game. But you get to see, Yeah, Louisville's MIKEL.
Brown build a build a house with all the bricks
that he threw up and he gets to stay in
there for twenty four minutes. So yeah, I have a
bone to pick with the USA committee. And you know,
(09:57):
it was weird. I found myself rooting against Team USA
at the end of the game because it was all
the duties and Louisal kids, and I was like, man,
this this feels wrong. I don't I don't like the
way I feel. But you know, they kind of did
my Kentucky boys dirty, so you know, sorry, it's just
the way the way the game unfolded. I did not
have a good Nike Hoops and the watching experience.
Speaker 4 (10:16):
It's same here. I hope it'll be a little bit
better for Jasper at the Jordan Brand Classic coming up
this next weekend. But Anthony, what did you think about
the situation at Tennessee for the quarterback this step and on.
I guess Thursday and Friday decided, Hey, for me, you know,
whatever me and whatever it is I'm getting, that's not enough.
I got to be re upped or I'm not I'm
not gonna be able to stay. They didn't apparently didn't
(10:37):
show up for the spring game. Josh Hypel cuts him,
and now Tennessee's looking for a quarterback.
Speaker 6 (10:44):
Larry Hoe, I mean you getting nestled in. I told
you before, I told you, I told you a year
or so ago that you going to the landscape. But
the crazy thing is, I think it's about to start
coming to a hope. I think there's going to be
some parameters and foundries and some restrictions start to be
put in place.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
And here's the thing, Larry, my thought on Tennessee.
Speaker 6 (11:06):
My thought on Tennessee is I think this is what's
gonna open a lot of people's eyes, business wise, sports wise,
gambling that this kid was offered eight million dollars over
his career, so that would do that'll amount to about
two million dollars per year, and I think he's supposed
to make two point five this year. Dy wakes up
in the morning, he has an itch in itself and
(11:26):
says or him his agent, whoever, well, you know what
I think we want four min I know we signed
for eight million in the beginning, but you know what Now,
I know you need me. I'm worth eight million. I
mean I'm worth four million for this year. I know
I told you I was gonna take two million a year.
I want four million.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
I want to up it.
Speaker 6 (11:42):
He that's what name, image and likeness is for. If
he can make four million dollars. And then here's where
the boundaries are gonna come in, Larry, if he wants
ten million, he should ask for ten million. If he
thinks he can get ten million, you know where the
problem comes from.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
If something's gonna pay him ten million, Larry, is he
worth ten million?
Speaker 4 (12:00):
Gonna make it? Yes?
Speaker 2 (12:02):
Right?
Speaker 6 (12:02):
So where it's gonna have to happen is no, I'm
not I'm not suggesting collusion or anything. But if you
asked a ten million and everybody across if you want
four million at this point, and everybody across the country
that we're not giving you four million, Now, what is
he gonna do? Is he gonna go back to Josh
Haipel and you know what, that two point five ain't
look that bad?
Speaker 2 (12:19):
Then Josh may say I told you so.
Speaker 6 (12:21):
But I think that's where it's gonna get because now
that they're seeing Tennessee being held hostage. You got a
quarterback coach. A coach was a quarterback himself, so he
understands you know what you you know what he needs
from you. And if you feel like two million dollars
was fined in the beginning, go ahead and go look
for four million. The problem is gonna come with no
(12:42):
when someone doesn't paying four million. But if someone does
pay him four million, that means that's that was the market.
So there's no there's no complaint with the quarterback. Now,
this whole sitting out and you know this stuff. The
NFL players do hold out for a bigger contract. Now
that's getting ridiculous. Now that is ridiculous in itself. But
where I think the game is gonna have to be.
(13:03):
These coaches are gonna have to an agent or whoever's
grasping all this money are gonna have to stand together.
If Josh Heipel offered you two point five million, don't
come to me asking for four you know, I mean,
it's just it's just how that's just life in general.
So if every team in the country said they're not
gonna give him four, he's just not gonna play football.
(13:25):
Or he's gonna go back and take two point five
or he's gonna take three. And if you come back
to the table with me, if i'm Josh Heipel, you
know what that we ripped up that contract, you know
I'll give.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
You one point five.
Speaker 6 (13:37):
So I understand everything, and I think this is gonna
open people's eyes to coaches don't want to be held hostage.
They have to all come together and be like, we
offer this guy a good salary. He so unless you
really really need a quarterback, I don't, then don't meet
his demands. Just let him know, like, no, we're not
paying you four million. We'll pay you the same two
(13:58):
point five tendency was gonna pay you. So I can't
understand it from all angles. I just think this has
to get under control. But I think it's gonna be
in control for the money spenders. If you're gonna pay
somebody what they asked, then that's the market. But I'm
not I'm not cool with him not going to practice
trying to hold the team hostage.
Speaker 2 (14:17):
If you don't give me this much, I'm not performing
for you.
Speaker 6 (14:20):
If I was all the other coaches in the country,
and it's gonna have to be a top ten I mean,
the top tier team is gonna have to be a
Ohio State, Michigan, Georgia, Alabama, which I know Georgia and
Alabama ain't doing it, and DM may do it, but no,
they're gonna have to come together and be like, look, man,
we gotta we gotta, we gotta let these players know
that when we sign a contract with you, that's what
it is.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
And if they all stick together, then kids will stop leaving.
Speaker 4 (14:45):
Jack, I bet he finds somebody to give you more money.
What do you think.
Speaker 7 (14:51):
That is a lot of money, though, I think it
is pretty empowering to just kind of see this work
against an athlete the way that it did, where you know,
just did kind of feel over the last year, year,
two years that you know, the athletes were able to
kind of hold the schools hostage the way you know,
schools were kind of holding them a hostage for as
(15:12):
many decades as they did. Is was never a happy
medium of both sides kind of you know, I scratch
your back, you scratch mind kind of kind of deal.
It felt like it was a total total swing and
this kind of helped shift things in the right direction
where you know, if you want to act like an employee,
you know, you're going to kind of get treated like
an employee and say, okay, well you can go walk.
(15:33):
You know, you go go find that money elsewhere where.
We don't want this around our program right now. We're
moving on from you as as a starting quarterback at
the University of Tennessee. So it's a very massive passive
power swing that I think is going to end up
working out for all parties involved here here over the
next couple of weeks of a couple of months in
(15:54):
the future of college sports.
Speaker 4 (15:56):
Well, it's just a kind of a bewildering time. It
makes you wonder what if other players will maybe try
the same thing, or whether they won't. I don't know, Anthony,
It's just it's just hard to see the direction of
what they're going. And I tell you, I know our
buddy Nymore Stewart sometimes gets frustrated coaching with different things.
This must drive him crazy.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
It has to.
Speaker 6 (16:20):
You know, you got you signed a guy, You put
your your blood, sweat and tears into him all these
hours you give them, You sign a contract. There you
go two years into the contract, you want to try
to double the dog on dem And we're talking millions,
not a couple hundred thousand, So it got to be
frustrated for the coaches.
Speaker 2 (16:37):
Larry, Yeah, it.
Speaker 4 (16:39):
Would have to be at all. So good thing is
we don't have to worry about that. Our buddy Tom
Lee just gives so much money we can't spend it
all at one time anyway.
Speaker 1 (16:47):
So we're we're in good.
Speaker 4 (16:48):
Shape right there at also. But but but Jack, we
know we got to let you. You're gonna be letting
you go here. Any tid bits for what people should
look for for Kentucky basketball this week.
Speaker 7 (16:59):
Yeah, we'll see what happen. Lamar Wilkerson, I could could
wrap this thing up, and he's on on campus today,
so we'll see what happens.
Speaker 4 (17:05):
All right, stay with us. We'll be back on Stockyards
Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk here at the Clark Puppet
Shop station.
Speaker 1 (17:10):
This is Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk presented by
the Lee Troop Borde Radio Network on six point thirty
w LAP.
Speaker 4 (17:20):
Welcome back to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. This
hour Sunday Morning Sports Talk has brought to you by
Country Boy Brewing. Uh So, glad to have you with us.
If you don't want to join us on the Big
Ace Fans hotline. You can do so at eight five
nine two eight oh two two eight seven. And that's
what Alvin has done. Good morning to you, Alvin, thanks
for giving us a call. Good morning Arry, good to
(17:44):
have you. How you doing today, sir, couldn't be any better?
What's on your mind today?
Speaker 8 (17:52):
You know the NIL portal NIL in the transfer portal,
particularly the NIL was burned by the complaints that the
old Bannon kids are banned issued to the government. He
took to the court so like that his image and
(18:13):
likeness was used because he wasn't getting paid for it. Uh.
And we know that that story of that particular judgment
will settled and go and behold the birth of n
AL came about. I think with the quarterback, the Tennessee quarterback,
(18:33):
we're trying to negotiate for a four million dollar payout
through an I L and the volunteers. Uh, let's let
him go, which I agree with that wholeheartedly. Do you
think that that will become a trend of coaches and
(18:53):
administrating administrators saying no, we're not gonna We're not gonna
be held hostage because I and athletes want big money.
Do you think that best particular fellow ask them for
that money. Well lead other administrators to the coaches of
not letting kids play and not negotiating for more money.
Speaker 4 (19:18):
I'm gonna let Anthony answer that for you.
Speaker 6 (19:22):
No, I do think that the coaches are fraternity, just
like the players are fraternity. I do think the coaches
understand if you have to if you we continue to
let this go on.
Speaker 2 (19:33):
We all have to deal with this.
Speaker 6 (19:35):
If we because because they have made it okay for
players to capitalize off their name, imagine and likeness.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
Is are these.
Speaker 6 (19:44):
College players before they performed at the highest level, are
they worth more to an NFL contracts? These guys are
making more than a lot of NFL players. So I
think the coaches are gonna come together and like, look,
I'll scratch your back now. If you absolutely need a
court back and you have a once a generational talent,
go ahead and pay him. With the Smith kid up
(20:05):
at Ohio State, the receiver, the guys young is gonna
be around for a couple of years. He should write
his own ticket. And someone wants to pay him ten
million dollars, I think he's worth it. But you just
got regular old guys who not take you the National championships,
want them three or four million dollars. Now, coach, if
you're going to give him that portion of your money,
as you and I talked about Larry, everybody in the
(20:27):
locker room looking at man, Look how big his pocketbook is.
He has to say he has to get a wheelbearer
to carry his money out every every week, every month, whatever.
Speaker 2 (20:36):
They pay him.
Speaker 6 (20:38):
So the coaches, I think, have to come together and
be like, look, if a guy wants to transfer, we
offered him a I'm not telling you the you know,
offer a guy one hundred and fifty thousand dollars when
he's worth two million. But if he signs a contract
commitment for two million dollars, and if you win the
National championship, then you if you want to go back
to the table, fine, If you a quarterback, running back, whatever,
like a star player on the National championship team in fine,
(21:01):
But you just a guy. If you do what you're
supposed to do, at the end of the day, you're
gonna make money in the NFL. Quartering back to the NFL,
are making anywhere between twenty five and fifty million dollars.
Speaker 4 (21:11):
Hey, Anthony, Anthony, let me, let me cut you off
right here, and thank you Alvin forgivness a call. I'd
forgot that we had Ladami and Washington the UK receivers
coach schedule to be on with us, and just completely
slipped my mind. So Bo, hopefully you cut the email
essential where you can reach out and get him on
with us, and I'll apologize fifty five times for that.
(21:31):
I got a little Boo boo here on my end.
I had my note and just old age things all
I can say. So hopefully, Bo, you can get him
on the phone for uce and I'll apologize forty four times.
And maybe you can go run with me those gasers
and everything at practice and make sure we all touch
the line. Anthony way you think.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
Yeah, I can. I can run a couple of gassers.
Speaker 6 (21:53):
I don't know if if the time limit on it
is gonna be a problem, but I can run.
Speaker 4 (21:56):
Them well, hopefully after me messing up, I guess he
won't make us run too many of them. But my
fault right there.
Speaker 2 (22:05):
I just had too.
Speaker 4 (22:06):
Many things on my mind last night as I was
driving home, got the information from Susan Lax, and then
just went completely blank on it. This morning when I
got up and came over here. So hopefully La Damien
has not given up on us and he's still there
because we certainly would like to have some information on
the Receiving Corps and what's going on in Kentucky there sot.
Speaker 5 (22:25):
Him, Coach.
Speaker 4 (22:26):
Appreciate you being all this, and I apologize fifty five
times for my mistake. Susan got with me and I
just had a long day yesterday, had it written down
on one pad, didn't get the right pad out with
me this morning, So apologize. We'll have you back on
again later and we could make up for it. Anthony'll
come over and run a few gasers with you. But
thank you for being on with us this morning.
Speaker 9 (22:48):
Yes, so you don't have to apologize at all.
Speaker 2 (22:50):
It's all good, okay.
Speaker 4 (22:51):
Also, we'll start out and tell us how did spring
practice go for your group and how is it? Mark
was talking yesterday about you have a what your guys
banged up in your area? How much did that hurt
you during the spring?
Speaker 9 (23:05):
Yeah, I think you know, anytime you're coming into any
any new place, and you know you got new faces
in that room as well, you're trying to want to
establish you know, an identity, you know, establish a culture
in the receiver a room, and for us right now,
continue to you know, to find what our process looks
like to get the things done that we need to
get done this season as a group, because I feel
(23:25):
like as a group, we have to get that done
before we can you know, move out to the team.
So I thought the spring went good. You know, we're
developing what that looks like for us. We had guys
banged up, but you know, in football and just like
in life, it's the next man up mentality. So it
got guys like David Washington more reps to where he
you know, continued to progress and get better. Some of
the younger guys like Quizzenberry was able to get valuable reps.
(23:49):
So I thought the spring overall was really good. We're
just you know, identifying what our process looks like as
a group.
Speaker 4 (23:54):
Well good, quizz a Berry, big big fan here. I know,
I've got to talk to him a little bit. Life slight.
He came up to an All Star game basketball game
to watch his sister play. And he never says a
whole lot one way.
Speaker 2 (24:04):
Or the other, but.
Speaker 4 (24:07):
On the field he does a lot of talking.
Speaker 9 (24:08):
There doesn't he yeah, you know, he's a smaller guy.
But like I said, you can't measure the heart. I think,
you know, he made place. He entered the scrimmage with
a touchdown. A guy with a tremendous athletic ability. He's
very twitchy. You know, he understands space, he understands angles
and attacking defenders. He's a football player at the end
of the day.
Speaker 4 (24:25):
And then I know David Orston apparently had a really
good scrimmage for you yesterday.
Speaker 9 (24:30):
Yeah, David, listen, you know that guy there, what he's
went through this spring. You know, I don't want to,
you know, share just his overall personal life, but what
he went through this spring, and to see his growth
and to see him continue to persevere and just show
up daily. He found out probably right before the spring
that I was like, David, I'm going to move you
to X And he went to X and he hadn't
(24:52):
really been there on spring and that just shows you,
you know, who he is as a person, and he
was ready for his moment, and he had a really good.
Speaker 4 (24:59):
Spring in Anthony where you got for coach.
Speaker 6 (25:01):
This morning, I was just thinking when he was talking
about Quizponberry, you know a guy, a smaller guy and coach.
I don't know if you realize probably all the records
in your room were held by a small guy from
Kentucky and Larry if I'm not If I'm correct, that's
about the same area, the same region.
Speaker 2 (25:21):
Uh the Craig East came from.
Speaker 6 (25:23):
So when you talk about size, Uh does he does
he realize that the leading receiver most all categories? I
believe all categories it's a smaller guy from from Kentucky.
Speaker 9 (25:37):
You know, I think you know Quizzenberry. I'm pretty sure
he does. Like he's he's a Kentucky favorite. He's a
favorite in on just the team all. He doesn't smile
and make plays like. He doesn't say much at all.
He smiles, he goes to work. Uh. You know, you
ask him to do anything, he just does it. And
I think you know a guy like Kens guys that
you're need in your room. Guys you ask him to
(25:58):
do something, they just go out and do it. You know,
it doesn't playing, he doesn't say anything. He'll take one
hundred reps in a row if he needs to. And
like I said, you can't measure heart. And at the
end of the day, He's a football player and at
the end of the day, we put the football down
and we played.
Speaker 6 (26:09):
Football and coaching. If you could talk about Jay Mac
is you know the rejuvenation. I know you weren't here
last year, but just his just his demeanor, just a
look on his face and when he's miked up the
you know, the things he's he's saying. Well, just talk
about Jay Mac and his commitment to the team this
year and what he means to that room.
Speaker 9 (26:28):
Yeah, j Mac means a lot. I've known Jay mack since,
you know, he was a you know, probably in middle
school when I was going back doing Jeremy Macklin camps
in Saint Louis because you know, we went to the
University of Misouri together. So I've known Macklin for a while,
even his freshman year when he was at Missouri, I
was there and around. So just him, his energy, you know,
his leadership. It's the first time he's stepping into I
(26:49):
think the role that he's stepping into. So when I say,
you know, we're learning our process and as a group,
you know, he has to lead and everything that he do,
whether that's on the field, off the field, whether that's
watching him, whether that's watching one on ones with the
guys and he's taking that role. He's continued to learn
what it looks like.
Speaker 2 (27:07):
You know.
Speaker 9 (27:07):
I try and have and set an environment to where
these guys can have fun and be themself. I think
whenever you talk to the receiver position, you know, you
don't want to give them too much freedom, but you
have to give them freedom to be themselves and express
themselves so they can go out and play to a
high standard. And that's what Mackel has done.
Speaker 4 (27:23):
The spring coach talked a little bit about the transfers
that you brought in kind of what you thought of
them after having a couple of months now to work
with them.
Speaker 9 (27:32):
Yeah, you know, JJ Hester is a guy that was
banged up. You know, he's a tall, long guy. Think
that I'll be able to stretch the feel for us
and you know, brings a unique skill set there. Kendrick Law,
he's tough, you know, he does everything you ask. He's
a guy that just brings his heart hat every day.
And that's a guy that I've been really really impressed
with this spring and he's going to be really huge
(27:53):
for us. And then another guy's Troy who came from Clemson.
He was banged up a little bit as well this spring,
but he has to continue to make progress. He's really good,
he's nifty, he's crafty in the slot, he catches the
ball really well, he has really good speed. So I'm
really proud.
Speaker 2 (28:08):
Of those guys.
Speaker 9 (28:09):
I'm proud of the guys that's been here like a
Fred Fairria, you know as well. God has put his
time in and you know, expecting big things from this season.
Speaker 4 (28:18):
Everybody the week talked to, and I don't know if
Anthony would disagree enough, but everybody that I've talked to
has heard about it, said that sometimes you can be
rather excitable even in practice. So what what's it like
on game day with you, coacher? Are you the same
way and is it being exaggerated about how excitable you
can be?
Speaker 9 (28:36):
You know, I'm actually complete opposite on game day. You know,
I tell the guys this, during the week, you're gonna
get everything out of me, like and I mean everything,
And on game day, you know, I'm more hands off
because I've gave them, in a sense, everything that I
could that week. So I practice in the meeting rooms everything,
and on game day I let them go out and
be theirself. Of course, I'm gonna, you know, help them
with adjustments on the field and stuff like that. But
(28:57):
I'm not yelling at screaming on game day because I
need them just in that, you know, that focused state
of mind and getting their zen zone that works for them.
So on game damn, I'm a lot more quiet and.
Speaker 6 (29:06):
Reserved and coach. You work with these guys on the regular.
You see him the progress they're making. Dedicate who are
we gonna look at this year? You're gonna look up
one day, Larry Vaull, myself, Jack Pilgrim is gonna be
like what receiver in that room? We're gonna be like that.
Nobody's talking about that. You already see it in them.
That's gonna make an impact for us.
Speaker 9 (29:27):
You know, I think those freshmen have been huge, you know,
whether you go Preston Bowman, you know Quizenberry and DJ Miller.
You know, DJ Miller's had a really really good spring.
He's a tall, long guy that can run, that catches
the ball really well. And I think you know, nobody's
really talking about Fred Ferry and Fred has put in
the work. You know, he's been consistent. You know, he's
a coach's son, and he plays like it and he's
(29:47):
a tough competitor. So I'm really just proud of the
overall whole group, to be honest with you, because Kendrick
Law as well, Troy. You know, it's a room of
a lot of guys and including myself, that has a
lot to prove. To be honest with you, h and
I'm excited about the challenge. I'm excited about, you know,
continue every day to you know, to show that group
exactly what it looks like. So I'm excited about the fall.
(30:07):
You know, I think that's the good thing in our group.
We got a lot of guys that have a lot
to prove, and you know, we're all up for the task.
Speaker 2 (30:14):
And I know you guys want to possess the rock.
Speaker 6 (30:17):
I know you're probably gonna do the fair thing, but
I got to take a shot. I got to take
a stab at it. Which one of the quarterbacks do you?
You know, your guys feel most comfortable about? What do
you see the most the most fluidity between the receiver,
Which quarterback is given your guys the best opportunity to
possess the rock?
Speaker 9 (30:33):
You know, you talk to the quarterbacks, you know Zach is,
you know, really good. He's a guy has played a
lot of snaps. They love Cutter as well. Bow's a
guy that's you know, super poised. And then you got
Brennan as well as young freshmen. You got Stone. You
know those guys feel comfortable with all those quarterbacks. To
be honest with you, and I'm not just saying that.
I think all those guys have done a really good job.
Bush has done a really good job, you know, preaching
(30:54):
competition from so whether it's Bow, Brennan, whether it's you know, Stone,
whether it's Zach, or whether it's Cutter, you know, our
job is to go out there and do our job
and has catch the ball and block for the running
backs and tight ends.
Speaker 4 (31:06):
Look, look, Damian, one thing when I've talked to mon
Tavian a month or so ago that has stunned me.
He said, the speed work and the drill work and
everything that you guys have them doing has made him
even faster and more elusive than he was in high school,
even though he's only just been here about three months now.
Is that true or is that just his imagination that
you've made him believe that?
Speaker 9 (31:27):
No, our weight room, I tell guys all the time.
You know, it's no coincidence that a guy goes to
the combine and runs, you know, Max goes to the
combine and run the fastest, the fastest forty. Our script
staff doesn't a tremendous job with those guys and getting
them ready and you know, working on speed and you
know the apply o stuff and all of that. So no,
(31:48):
you know, which is exciting for a guy like Quizenberry
because him getting fast is always good for the cats.
Speaker 4 (31:54):
Yeah, and he said that's something now that wants y'all,
now that you're through the spring practice, that'll start back
immediately doing all that kind of work. Because he said,
you can ever be too fast in the sec.
Speaker 9 (32:05):
That's actually true, which I'm surprised Quisenberry said that much.
Speaker 8 (32:08):
So I actually love that.
Speaker 7 (32:10):
I could badly, I.
Speaker 9 (32:11):
Could badly give him the same three words at a time.
So but no, he's absolutely right, and that's something that
we want to work on, you know, get you know, bigger, stronger, faster,
all three of those. But speed is something that we
definitely putting a huge emphasis on.
Speaker 6 (32:25):
And coach my last question, I guess I know it
ain't the air raid. Tim Couch ain't on the coaching
staff with you all to influence it. But you got
to pitch count with Bush, Bush Hampton giving you guys
a target amount with that twenty because I would like
to see you guys throw the ball a little more
instead of being this we don't want to be in
third and longer second along, but I would like to
(32:47):
see you guys throw the ball a little more.
Speaker 2 (32:48):
Is that something you and Bush and discussed.
Speaker 9 (32:51):
You know, I'm you know, I'm I'm always tell people
I'm a front line soldier. And what I mean by
that man, whatever Bush or Coach do so anybody need
me to do and is going to produce and help
the team win, That's that's what I'm all on board for.
So you know, we got a great you know, we
got a great running back room. We got a lot
of great tight ends, you know. And whatever our job
(33:11):
is asked to do on Saturdays to win ball games
for the Cats, you know, and whatever Bush needs me
to do at coachtops, That's what I'm gonna do.
Speaker 4 (33:18):
Good were coach. We certainly appreciate again you're joining us.
Sorry again for my little mistake there about us being
a little bit like getting to you Hopefully maybe we
can make it up to you and get you back
on with us in June or so for a little
bit longer period because I know there's a lot of
people like to know, I'll hear a lot more from you,
so certainly appreciate you, buddy.
Speaker 9 (33:35):
Hey, I appreciate you all. I've never apologized.
Speaker 7 (33:37):
It's all good.
Speaker 9 (33:38):
Hope you'll have a blessed Sunday.
Speaker 4 (33:40):
All right, thank you. We'll take a break here on
Sunday morning, Stockyard Bank Sunday Morning Sports Stalk, Stay with us,
be back.
Speaker 1 (33:46):
This is Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk presented by
the lead troop BOARDGE Radio Network on six point thirty
w LAP.
Speaker 4 (33:56):
Welcome back to Stockyards Banks Sunday Morning Sports Talk. Thanks
to UK Receivers coach of Damian Washington for being so
gracious after I screwed things up there with the time
on that. So that's totally on me, so I appreciate
him doing that. Got a short segment here, so we're
going to go straight to the big as fans hotline
and get our collar on with us. Wayne, go ahead,
(34:17):
Wayne there.
Speaker 2 (34:19):
Thank you.
Speaker 10 (34:20):
One way to stop what's going on with the athletes.
What happened at Tennessee is basically to have the universities
sue the athletes for breach of contract. So basically, if
they do not perform and they breach their contract after
the seasons over, they basically filed a suit against them
to basically recover damages. I think that's one way to
stop that from happening, because it is ridiculous that the
(34:42):
athlete wants to just pack his bags and go somewhere
else to a higher bidder.
Speaker 4 (34:47):
Well, you think about that, Anthony makes sense to me, it.
Speaker 6 (34:50):
Does make sense. So you've got to get some legal ground.
We got to get some boundaries. But I do think
but as he said, if you want to go somewhere else,
you get out of his contract. Let somebody buy you out,
just like the coach. Well the other school won't you.
It's gonna cost you the two million that you will
at Tennessee o's and then you can give them another
formulion on top of that if you've been paid six million.
Speaker 2 (35:10):
I like that, called Wayne.
Speaker 4 (35:11):
Yeah, let's put Wayne in charges there taking a consideration. Yeah,
let's put Wayne in charge of this nil transfer portal deal.
Speaker 10 (35:18):
Yeah, I think that would be good. Basically, we stop
all these transfers from happening when someone doesn't like what's
going on. But just my thought on it.
Speaker 4 (35:25):
Well it's an intelligent thought, Wayne, some means it could
never happen. Okay, so well we appreciate that. But af
today again, I'm sorry I messed up with La Damien Washington.
I just got overlooked an email and put it on
the wrong schedule here, So that's totally on me, something
I take great pride in not doing. So you can
tell I'm a little embarrassed and flustered a by a mistake.
Speaker 6 (35:48):
That's all right, man, you got you got Lizzie and
Molly coming in there.
Speaker 2 (35:51):
Man. Yeah, so you know you can make it up
with them.
Speaker 6 (35:53):
Man, give them a good what I guess forty five
minutes because we got daring coming on. But yeah, that's right,
and you can make up for it. Man, you can
make up for it.
Speaker 4 (36:01):
And you go and give your mom a big hug
for me, because, like I wish I could still give.
Speaker 2 (36:05):
Mine point and tell coach I'm not running no damn gassers.
I just said that on the air. You can run them.
I ain't running no damn gasses.
Speaker 4 (36:12):
I'm with you. Buddy, all right, stay with us. We'll
be back on sock Yards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk
and we'll have Lizzie Carr, Molly Bretzewick's on with us
from the UK Volleyball
