Speaker 1 (00:06):
Welcome in Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I'm Anthony White,
and I'm not sitting alongside anybody, but I'm here with
the usual suspects, Larry Vaught and Jack Pilgrim, coming to
you from Clark's Main Street Market studios and beautiful downtown Lexton, Kentucky.
Get over the Clark's Pumpy Shop, return and refresh, and
(00:29):
then after you do that, refuw whenever you need to.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Larry Vaught one and oh, one and oh, and.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
My defense showed up. We got a long show, So
I ain't ain't gonna say a whole lot of nothing
about nothing. But you always like to defer to my expertise,
as you would call it. I don't think it's expertise.
I just think it's logic. But we are one and
oh period. Like I told you where we're gonna be.
You were scared. And for three three core and half
(01:00):
of a quarter, three and a half quarters you were
probably pretty convinced that I was right.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
Yeah, I was.
Speaker 4 (01:15):
It was a strange game, Anthony, It was a strange game.
There were a lot of things that made me at
times want to kind of feel encouraged with what you
said and there were some things that left me still
wondering exactly what could lie ahead. But you are right,
it is a win, which is always better than a loss.
There were some parts of the game that you can like.
(01:36):
I mean, for three quarters, the defense was lights out,
just dislights out. And also, we'll see how fans feel.
I know what feedback I've got, but we'll see what
kind of calls we get this morning and how they
feel about the show. I did really like the defensive line.
I liked the punter, and I.
Speaker 5 (01:57):
Like the kicker.
Speaker 1 (01:59):
Oh well, that's that's awful disrespectful. You've been disrespectful these
past couple of weeks. So the move from Alex Safari
from outside to the in the mic? Did you not
see Alexa Fari? If if I could pay Alex Safari
to stay in my guest room and just protect my house,
I would pay him.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
I just don't think I can afford to do that.
Speaker 6 (02:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
Uh no, there's no hesitation. No there's no yeat. But no,
there's no yeah. But Alexdafari balled out go ahead.
Speaker 4 (02:28):
I don't think Alex Safari surprised me, though, I think, okay,
good every time that I've watched him play. I mean,
I thought he would be really good. He was a
gibbot on the defense. To me, he's the he was
the guy him, him and the secondary. You knew what
you I think you thought you knew what you had
coming back with those guys. The defensive line I thought
was gonna be really good. And they did play that well.
(02:50):
They got constant pressure I thought created some things and
so I was impressed with what with what they did.
So that's what with Alan excitest to soon he was
gonna be the leading tackler and the best player on
the defense this season based on what he's done since he's.
Speaker 5 (03:06):
Been at the UK.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
Thirteen tackles A is a whole lot of tackles, Jack Pilgrim.
I don't know if you know that, just I'm just
letting you know. So when Billy starts playing flag or whatever,
it is just like a little Cody Cody vault thirteen tackles.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
There was a lot of tackles, Jack Pilgrim. What you
think about the game.
Speaker 7 (03:25):
Though, Oh man, he was awesome. Alex Parry's just an
absolute joy to watch those steven soles. I thought, I
just there's so much to love about the defense. And
I just kind of wear things. They just felt like
they were always around the football and making plays. And
the pass rush was just such a breadth of fresh
air after seeing kind of where things were last year
(03:47):
and struggling to get to the pass or so often.
So touns to love about that side, and I love
special teams. I thought there's some juice on, you know,
ty Bryant, we got to get some stuff figured out
with putt return, but kick return, I think there's some
juice there. And obviously love what you saw with the
punting game and the kicking game, and a lot to
(04:09):
like about the personnel with the running game. I think
that I like the one A one B aspect with
Dad l and McGowan, and then tight ends got the
ball and that's about it. I will defer to the
rest of the conversation about the offense to you, Anthony,
(04:30):
because that was a big question. Mark.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
I will say this, and before we get to the offense,
and you know, we have a long show, we have
guests lined up. I will say this. You said, ty Briant,
had do you say? And ty Brian's nephew, so take
everything I say about this respectfully. Does you said fix
some things, and Larry Vaught may, I don't know if
(04:55):
this was off the air conversation Larry and I had
or if it was on the air, But do we
because he has so much responsibility, there's so much on
his shoulders that we just take ty Bryant off of
punter And it's not because of him. Like you said,
you said that we need to fix some things with them,
Why not just take them off there and put law
back there or somebody who's accustomed to catching footballs not
(05:16):
saying tis not. But he has so many things defensively,
being the head of the defense, you know, the quarterback
of the defense, so many things he has to be
in control of. Take that off his plate so that
he doesn't have to worry about it. Because if you
go whatever, however many plays in the series and it
comes forth down and now they're putting it to you,
(05:36):
we don't know what you went through the past couple
of plays, because you've had to think about the plays.
You had to break down the plays you had to
because you're the safety. If someone misses an assignment, you
have to make up for that. Maybe most people don't
know that if someone blows an assignment. That's why you
have your smartest player at safety, you have the dumbest
player at Mike linebacker because they don't care. They just
gonna run up in there. But maybe take tie off
(05:58):
of punt return because he has so much responsibility and
catching a football, fielding, saving field positions something he shouldn't
have to worry.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
But you know who's not on the.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
Field when the defense is on the field, Jack Pilgrim,
kender glaw Right the offense, any offensive player. So just
Kendrick comes out there, catches the football, not a quarterback
comes out Kendrick doesn't have to think about anything until
Zach cos Outa tells.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
Him what to do.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
So bring Kendrick out there, or any offensive player. So
based off what I told you, do you think maybe
just take tie off of it. And this is not
a knock on tie. It is just beneficial more for
the team and let just let tie be safety, be
the quarterback of the defense and that's not a responsibility
shaft hand.
Speaker 7 (06:42):
Yeah, well, to to the point on on kender Claw,
he didn't really have to think about anything all day
if he didn't get a single reception. But yeah, I
totally agree. I you know, when they when they talked
about bringing ty Bryant back, and you know, why why
is he fielding punts? Why is he the go to
punt returner. You know when the depth chart was released,
(07:04):
Stuts was talking about it last week and just went
so in depth about, well, he has a baseball background
and we just trust his fielding instincts, and you know,
we just we want a sure handed guy back there
because we lost so much, you know, in terms of
field position last season. We really wanted to make up
for that. And you know we saw the exact same
thing happen with what happened with Maclin last season, which
(07:28):
letting the ball skip across the ground and lose field position.
So yeah, I totally agree if you're going and again
I totally agree. I don't think it's anything to do
with tie it specifically. It's it's, you know, adding another
thing to that guy's plate that is totally unnecessary when
you have actual dynamic playmakers that can make plays out
(07:48):
of something. But if you're going to describe ty Bryant
as a Charles Walker, safe hand, you know, sure handed
threat that's going to save you field position and then
you watch the ball bounce, you know and you get
it kind of watching him in the special teams staff
kind of bickering on the sideline about what he should
have done, what he shouldn't have done those things. It's like, well,
why are we doing this to begin with just a
(08:08):
lot of little things? Again, that's super nitticky. That was
two small errors out of a game of one hundred
self inflicted errors that could have turned this into a
you know, three four touchdown win instead of a you know,
one score, one score win. But again that's just kind
of part part for the course with Kentucky football right now,
self inflicted errors.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
And Larry Vall before, like I said, before we move
on the show and also move on to the offensive
side of the ball. I just kind of want to
get your opinion on it because Jack is right and
I don't know about the baseball analogy to me, because
there are certain people and I returned punts, and I
returned punts when I was in Europe. I also returned
him in high school. I returned a lot of them
in high school. And the one thing is you got
(08:49):
to see the ball off the kicker's foot, so even
the ball should never really fall short because soon as
it leaves of the foot, you should gauge where it
should land. So a lot of times when people let
it fall in front of them, No, you run up
underneath it and catch it, even though the defense is coming.
Because you wave your hand, the defense has to give
you it. They have to give you the fair catch area.
(09:10):
So but if you don't judge it off the foot
and it hits the ground, now you got to deal
with the bounce.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
Everybody's coming.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
And if it rolls to twenty yards, that's twenty yards
of real estate, and it says not a type right thing.
My whole point is that I don't even know if
we're actually coaching the players that once the ball comes
off the foot, if it looks like it's gonna get short,
run up there. If you can catch it, wave your
hand and get underneath it. Not because it's short, Oh
(09:39):
tell everybody the fan away. No, Now, if it's really short,
if it's twenty five thirty yards, which the first one
was thirty yards, then that's understandable. But the whole point
of you being back there is to gauge that if
I can get underneath it, wave your hand, that means
they have to give you a fair catch and you
should have soft enough hands to catch the well. But
I also know it's a very tough job. Is why
(10:00):
everybody just can't do it. Everybody's not Derek Gabney, everybody's
not Craig East, everybody's not Randall Cobb, everybody's not Laying Bowden,
everybody's not even ty Bryant. But as Jack and I
discussed Larry Vatt, I will because of how important I
know this defense is. Just like I told you last year,
I would like ty Bryant's head to be clear of
worrying about on fourth down. Okay, I have to return
(10:24):
this punt. You know, I got to get into traffic,
and no, let's just get him off the field. Unless
he's gonna be like a blocker or something on punt return.
Let's just get him off the field and worry about
the next series of defense and put one of those
dog on receivers.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
If you don't have enough, if you don't have enough.
Speaker 1 (10:39):
Trust in your receiver playing punk returner, then so coming
into next week, And I hopefully it wouldn't if that
was what happened. Hopefully it wouldn't make Tide feel as
if they didn't trust him because to me, I'm saying,
we don't want that on your plate. I'm not saying
he can't do it. I know he can do he
did in high school. He can't do it, But I'm
(11:02):
more or lessen I don't want that on his plate.
And if there were in Jack saying well, we gotta
we gotta clean up, we gotta figure this out. Do
you think we need to figure it out or do
you are you on my side? Where just taking off
his plate? Kendrick Law has been available all day sitting
you know, one catch, So just put Kendrick Law back there,
(11:22):
unless you don't trust his hands either. I don't have
any eligibility.
Speaker 4 (11:25):
Left well based on the way the wide receivers caught
the ball or didn't catch the ball and it was
thrown to them, or the catches they didn't haven't. I
don't know, but I would assume any they went through
a month of watching wide receivers back there try to
field punts and didn't like what they saw. And that's
why this out of nowhere tym right became the punt
(11:46):
return because he was a guy was catching the ball
and doing it better in practice than anybody. So I
would suspect they'll probably have him back there again. It
didn't sound to me like listening to Mark Stoops after
the game, that he was ready to make a change there,
that he'll give Tide another opportunity back there, And I
know Tye was really looking forward to the opportunity of
(12:07):
being back there. So I'm going to ride the Tye
Bryant train and I hope he stays here and gets
another opportunity.
Speaker 2 (12:14):
Now I'll go to break.
Speaker 1 (12:16):
We'll we'll continue this conversation when we go to break
because there's a couple other questions I got asked because
we're coming to this season. Mark Stoops made a lot
of comments that didn't really make sense to me, and
I thought it may have been, you know, smoking mirrors
or just blowing smoke just to confuse the opponent. And
now after, you know, seeing the product, I got a
little bit more insight, a little bit more understanding on
(12:38):
some of the things. But we have a long show,
so we'll discussed it after this. You're listening to Stockyards
Bank Sunday on the Sports Talk on News Ready El
six thirty WLP.
Speaker 8 (12:47):
This is Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk, presented by
the lead Troop for it to radio network on six
thirty w LAP. Welcome back Stockyards Bank, Sony more than
sports talk. I'm Anthony White, along with.
Speaker 2 (13:02):
Larry Vaught and Jack Pilgrim.
Speaker 1 (13:05):
Stockyards Bank has been your trust to partner since nineteen
hundred and four, so head on over to syb dot
com for all your banking and financial needs. Larry Vard,
I feel giddy this morning. Jack Pilgrim, I'm feeling giddy.
We're won to oh ugly closing to the game. My
defense showed up. I'm an offensive player, but I do
(13:25):
believe in our defense. Brad White because his last name
is White, and maybe I may be partial to him,
but I love what Brad White does. And Alexa faris
from Ohio and he played at high school with my
nephew or my little cousins play playball at at Lakota West.
(13:45):
So we do have an offense. Our offense came out
this week and I'm not sure they impressed. I think
they did a lot of things I thought they would do.
Larry Vaught, No, Jack Pilgrim, So last the last couple
of years, In the last couple of weeks, I've been saying,
(14:06):
our quarterback needs to know where to go with the
ball when they get a blitz, like if you get
if they get a blitz, and everybody's kind of questioning
what I said on Twitter. We took a safety, but
before we took the safety, we threw an interception.
Speaker 2 (14:21):
On the drive.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
And I always said that there's a hot route if
a guy blitzes off the edge, the receiver over top
of the guy. So if the guy is acting like
he's guarding the receiver, the defensive back, safety, linebacker, whoever
they blitz, that guy that he was standing in front
of is supposed to replace him wherever he's blitzing from.
(14:43):
You're running right into that area because the quarterback should
see him running at him, and he throws the ball
over beneath him, over him and the receiver catches the ball.
Speaker 2 (14:52):
We tried to do that, which is which is great.
Speaker 1 (14:55):
They came off the edge, the inside receiver ran a
slant route. The defensive back jumped the slant route, which
means jumped in front of the receiver and then intercepted it.
And I think that guy in Zach comes out his head.
The problem is the receiver is not supposed to let
that defensive back get between them. We talked about last
week about Jack Pilgrim's favorite Seattle, New England Patriots super
(15:20):
Bowl in death, Butler jumped the jump the route. So
the thought process was there is being taught what's to do.
But the receiver doesn't go up. You don't go up
the field. You get in front, you get between the football,
the quarterback, and you get between the defensive back. So
the next time we're in the safe, we're in the
(15:40):
we're in the end zone. We're deep because we got
a fourth and fourth down stop deep in our territory.
Zach goes out of drops back, same scenario, Zach goes
out of holes the ball a little bit, just because
last time he tried to throw the hot Roddy got intercepted.
Speaker 2 (15:56):
Now you take a dog on safety.
Speaker 1 (15:59):
So you can blame Bush, Hampden, you can blame execution,
you can blame the players. But I think our offense
is evolving. I just think it's gonna take us a
little time. I am concerned. I'm not gonna sit up
here and tell you I'm not concerned. From my preseason
pros knowledge, whatever, prostnology, whatever it is, I'm not gonna
say that I'm not concerned. There is a little bit concern.
(16:20):
I think our offensive line is working. I think they're
a hustle. I think they're grinding. I think they're staying active.
So I don't have a whole lot of problem about
our offense line evolving, but just some of the concepts
and execution I think was bad yesterday, and I think
it's manifests itself. When Bush Hampden kind of wants to
(16:44):
open up his playbook, then he starts to realize, well,
our execution on some of these players aren't gonna work,
so it minimizes his playbook, which is why everybody looked
yesterday and was like that looked pretty vanilla. Yeah, it
could have looked the vanilla because we're not trying to
show anything to Lane Kifton though guys when they come
to town next week. But I do think the execution
of some of the things he called failed short, so
(17:05):
I think that minimized his playbook.
Speaker 5 (17:07):
Jack Pilgrim, Yeah, it was something you know, you heard
a lot talking to Steve's, talking to Calzada, talking to Hamden.
Speaker 7 (17:18):
Yesterday about just a lack of rhythm and how this
self inflicted errors and wounds kind of threw everything off
and kind of led to that second guessing and overthinking
and all of those things that led to the eighty
five passing yards on teneth twenty three completion. Overall that
we saw in the passing game, you know, like we
(17:39):
talked about it, there was a lot to like about
the running game, even though the yards per carry didn't
necessarily he didn't love that outside of the seventy nine
yard rush with doub delpa and to kind of pad this,
you know, cushion the stats a little bit, but there
was a you know, you could see it. It popped
(18:00):
the boat. Both dud L and McGowan both popped on film.
You liked what you saw and saw the potential there.
You know again, you're you're expecting some Week one rust
and you know, you look across the whole college football landscape,
everybody was kind of dealing with something similar. Nobody was
firing on all cylinders offensively unless they were playing you know,
the School of the Blind. Like that, All of that
(18:21):
stuff made sense. I wasn't expecting a well oiled machine
week one, but I did see a lot of concern
with the execution and they just not being on the
same page with the passing game. That does kind of
bring some real pause going into this sec opener. So
I'm not all the way out on Calzada and saying
we got to start Cutter Bowley if we have any
(18:43):
shot of beating all Miss. I still think we should.
We should see the process through and hope he could
get through it. But I do think hearing Stoops talk
after the game, and hearing Kalsada or hand and talk
after the game, I think his leash might be quite
a bit short or than we all expected. I wasn't
expecting Stoops to be as low on cayle Zada's performance
(19:05):
after the fact that as he ended up being, which
is good. I mean, you wanted to hear uh send
some accountability there and show that there is trust and
if we do have to make a move to Cutter,
that he's willing to make that. But I guess I
wasn't expecting him to be as low on the performance,
even though our eyes saw that. I wasn't expecting the
head honcho to kind of feel the same way as
(19:27):
all of us fans do.
Speaker 1 (19:29):
Van Howes, I hope you're listening to Jack Pilgrim because
no words, Hey, Larry, not you Larry the other, Larry,
that's on the phone.
Speaker 2 (19:37):
Hold on man. We had to get that offensive talk out.
Speaker 1 (19:40):
And plus I wanted to put I wanted to put
that in Van Howe's face because Van Howes asks like
he don't understand what I'll be telling him until he
sees it, and when he sees it, he still doesn't understand.
We will be back after this. You'll listen to Stockyards
Bank Sudn't Wanted sports Talk on news radio six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 8 (19:55):
This is Stockyards Bank Sunday Mornings sports Talk, presented by
the lead troop for IT Radio Network on six thirty
w LAP.
Speaker 1 (20:06):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday one in sports Talk. I'm
Anthony White along with Larry Vall and Jack Pilgrim. This
our Sunday one in Sports Talk has borked to you
by Country Boy Brewing talking UK football one and all.
You you I mean, that's just the history of Kentucky football.
(20:26):
You would think that we started this season off one
in or zero in one after a twenty four to
sixteen win over Toledo, after a late surge by Toledo.
Speaker 3 (20:35):
And eh, is it just too early to be negative?
Well for Kentucky footballs is never do? Is it ever
too early? You wake up before you get your You're right?
More than it's always negative with my friends, and I like,
I don't know, here we go again? Or I got
a text from somebody during the game yesterday I felt
(20:56):
like I've watched this before, and I text him back,
I said, you have.
Speaker 2 (21:01):
I gotta apologize to you.
Speaker 9 (21:03):
Bo.
Speaker 1 (21:04):
I didn't make it over to the house yesterday morning,
so I don't know where the bandwagon stands. I know
we were supposed to, you know, put another alternator on there.
That's why I think. That's why I wouldn't turn over
when you crank, because I think the alternator was out.
Speaker 3 (21:18):
But how's the bandwagon looking for you? You know, I've
got the key right there at the ignition. Okay, I
haven't gotten started up yet. Maybe I'm at the key
in the ignition after next Saturday if they win.
Speaker 1 (21:34):
Oh lord, that's your last comment for the show. There's
no I'm all in. I told you I'm all in
Larry Vard, Jack Pilgrim and Bo. But you know us,
it's all in the Big Ass Fans Hotline. If you
would like to join the Big Ass Fance Hotline, you
can join it eight five nine to eight zero two
to eight seven. That is eight five nine to eight zero.
Cats lists get over there and meet Larry the law
(21:56):
firm of Larry and Larry. Good morning, Larry.
Speaker 2 (21:59):
What do you got for?
Speaker 9 (22:01):
Well, we started the pods. We won and that's more
than an Alabama and passive Texas can say. You know,
he said, you know, uh, I guess there was a
few kind of helpipper and helped. You know, they wont
but uh, you know, I I was listening. I was
watching the old Miss game, a little bit of it.
(22:24):
They were saying how their offensive line wasn't very good. Well,
if that holds up Kentucky's defense, he got a good
shot of slowing them down, you know, pretty much. But
they it's what they were saying last night. I was
watching them. But you know, I was watching our game.
You know, our defense played three quarters real good. But
I don't know whether they just put the foot off
the gas or put subs in. I'll send there thanking.
(22:46):
Why y'all giving up six big chunks like you know,
like prevent defense? Well I call it, but you know,
and and and you know, let me ask you why
is no why is there no return guys anymore that
you know when we and that Derek add me all
them players used to be a lot of you know,
long returns. It seems like any more in college football
there's hardly any returns, you know, something like they just
(23:07):
catch ball our cats, you know, there's no breakaways like
it used to beat don't seem like you see that
no more. I don't go the way Larry valto, No.
Speaker 1 (23:18):
I was gonna say about that. I'm gonna I'm gonna
let you and Larry Vaux get together. I'm gonna see
how how exciting was it actually to meet Larry Vaught.
But I did want to get to the part return thing.
And I talked to Derrick Gabney with Derrick Gabney was
a freshman when I was a senior, so I really
didn't play with him a whole lot. But I did
play with Craig Yeast, and they the the special teams
(23:38):
coordinator made it a point to make sure that Derek,
so you block, you held your guys up at the
line of scrimmage. Everybody blocked, and Derek knew that they
wanted him to return the ball, so he was aggressive
on going up underneath the ball, whether it's kicked short
or not to field it, because he had to faith
that everybody was gonna be blocking. So I think it
just has to be a priority of the defense or
(23:59):
of a special team games coordinator for us to actually
like with Liam Bowen and uh uh of Randall Cobb,
I think it has to be a priority for the
of the for the special teams coordinator, and I don't
I just don't think it's a priority anymore.
Speaker 9 (24:16):
Yeah, well, I mean you don't see it no more hardly.
But that's you know. But anyway, I met a guy
the other night the ball game. He says, he's laryer Vault.
I've never seen before, never meet him, and I trust
this lady that was ridding him, you know, was sit
as his daughter in law. So I guess it was like,
you know, I tried to meet him before, you know,
(24:37):
and he kind of I'm going to be at a
festival and every show up, so you know, I'm thing like,
I guess it's a guy. We sent a picture you supposedly,
but you probably could verify it it was Larry Vau.
Speaker 2 (24:50):
But was was as exciting as you expected.
Speaker 9 (24:54):
Yeah, well, anyway, you know, it's funny when you meet
a person, you get a picture of what they look like.
You made him. You know, they're probably opposite, you know,
but I didn't know he had a beer or somebody
tell me, uh you know, but anyway, he uh, he's
got that seventy haircut still out. When I was running around.
Speaker 1 (25:13):
Larry Vaughll was exciting for you because Larry, because Larry
kind of shown me all so I think when I
when when people meet you, I think you like a
rock star, Larry Vall. But Larry from Lebnon didn't seem
like he was too excited. Were you excited to meet
Larry from Lebnon?
Speaker 4 (25:27):
That was very, very excited. Think Larry from Levian got
gil reminder of a lot of Marion County history. As
we were watching the game, were waiting for the game
to get started, had a chance to have a long
conversation with Larry.
Speaker 1 (25:41):
Well, see Larry, Larry, go ahead, I'm just messing with him.
Speaker 9 (25:47):
I have a lot of fun messing with people sometime.
I kind of I was messing you all these years,
but that's just my nature, you know. Now, I like Larry.
You know, I've talked to him over the years, and
that it's funny how you talked to a lot of
people on And I've seen you at a distance one time, Anthony,
when we was at the at the I guess before
the football season started in one of those you know,
(26:09):
uh at the beginning year when we used to have
I guess you still have them in the you know,
the sports center over in the election. I've seen you
walking across our and somebody said it to you. But
you know, you always you talked to a lot of
people over the years, and you always wonder what these
people actually look like, you know. But you know, Larry,
he's kind of like made me in him about the
same age. And and we've seen a lot of stuff
(26:30):
over the years, and you know, like a lot of
such football. We've seen bad years, we've seen some pretty
good years. But you know, as far as as far
as the game, you know, I think everything looks decent,
but our quarterback situation, I'm not I'm not really for sure.
I don't know whether they helped back or I don't
know how this guy had a pass. You Actually, it's
(26:51):
just seem like he's had a lot of passes that
wasn't really completed like I thought he would. I guess
I respect a little bit more. But we did use
a tight ends. That's I can't believe that we told
him two or three times. That's probably more we told
to him last five six years.
Speaker 2 (27:06):
Vince was holding us back.
Speaker 9 (27:08):
Yeah, you know, I mean, I.
Speaker 2 (27:12):
Don't know, I'm stay.
Speaker 9 (27:13):
I'm gonna stay with five games this year. Probably. I
hope we do better.
Speaker 2 (27:18):
Well, thank you for the call, Larry. I appreciate that.
Speaker 1 (27:22):
I don't know, I'm a little bit I'm a little
bit torn, but because I really wanted to let Larry
from Lebanon get on to talk to Larry Vault, because
I did see the picture and Larry's from Levinon looks
exactly like I expect him to look. And I don't
know if anybody, well, I guess Larry Vaught has a
lot of pictures because we take pictures when we're in
the studio, and he takes a lot of pictures, so
you already know what he looks like. But yeah, let's
(27:46):
get let's get back to the phone lines because kind
of at a loss, I want the fan base to
kind of jar me in the right direction. So let's
get back to the big ass fans hotline and see
what Doug has to say. Doug, who are you staying?
Speaker 2 (28:00):
What do you got for us?
Speaker 6 (28:02):
Look up, gentlemen, Hey, I'm gonna I'm gonna do some
couple of rapid fires with the football. I'm gonna ask
you guys something. What is this year twelve for Stoops?
Speaker 10 (28:11):
Is that right?
Speaker 4 (28:13):
Thirteen?
Speaker 7 (28:15):
Okay?
Speaker 6 (28:15):
Thirteen? How many times as a Stoops team's played well
in the first game.
Speaker 2 (28:23):
There's been a couple. I don't think there's been a couple.
Speaker 1 (28:26):
I mean, like flawled you, no team really plays falls
in the first game. I understand what your handwut.
Speaker 6 (28:31):
Well, and let me let me be clear. I saw
some positive things yesterday from that last year team. I
feel good about both sides up front. I like our
running backs. So I thought I saw some things from
from a standpoint of last year that we're concerning that
I don't think I have right now. And and let's
it's game one and let's let's go. Let's see where
(28:52):
this thing can go. Like I said, I'm still kind
of optimistic, a little disappointed at a seven year quarterback
couldn't execute a little bit than that with that experience.
But it is a new system too, so I'm gonna
write that one off and not panic over that. But
I want to talk about what has just kind of
bothered me more than the football. The football, I feel
(29:13):
okay now, but I'm gonna tell you something, Guys. I've
been going up there. I'm fifty six years old. I
started going at five and six year old with my
parents and me. Going yesterday there was more excited. I've
been to more exciting and more atmosphere at funerals than
at kroger Field. And I told you all last year.
We go on the road and we go to every stadium,
(29:36):
and I tell you when you sit in when you
go into Neely in twenty minutes before the game, that
place is freaking rocky. Same at South Carolina, everywhere you go.
You go into Kroger's and UK has got to find
a way to get people energize and ready for some football.
Speaker 9 (29:54):
It's just bad dog.
Speaker 2 (29:56):
Hold on, hold on, hold on, is it? Do you blie?
Speaker 1 (30:00):
Maybe it was a twelve forty five, It was Toledo,
it was the first game in the season. We didn't
do a whole lot of preseason marketing. Now, now I'm
give me this. Maybe against Old Miss at three thirty,
if you feel the same way, then maybe we may
see a problem a brew a foot, But maybe do
you think it's just because its Toledo first game and
(30:21):
we didn't and Larry Vaught Eye and Sunday Sports Monday
Sunday Morning Sports Talk has done a lot of publicity
for this team to get the fans up. We probably
did more than UK marketing. But maybe the Toledo game
in the UK football really hasn't done a lot prior
to the game. Maybe is that the reason?
Speaker 2 (30:39):
Possibly?
Speaker 6 (30:41):
Ay, why I think you're spot on. I'll tell you
because there's one thing I will say about a UK
fan base. We are a night game fan base. Yeah,
we just do it much better at night than we
can do it. And I'll be honest with you. Next
week at three thirty, it's gonna be old miss. I
think it's gonna be more exciting, But it would be
even better if that was a setting. We're just good
at night games, especially if we're playing some pretty decent football.
(31:04):
But my standpoint is is just I think the university
needs to go and put somebody in there and look
at how some of these other schools do and what
they do to get people energized because I just don't
I think it we underperformed. Well.
Speaker 1 (31:20):
I appreciate it. And Doug, if you if you got
a name, let them know. I'm available for about two
hundred and fifty thousand dollars a year and I will
quit this show. Or I may keep this show and
take the two hundred and fifty thousand you need to
keep the show. Okay, let me let's get Thanks for
the call, Doug. I didn't like that that guys put
(31:41):
that put a pen in that cause we'll discuss that
on the other side of the hour. But I do
want to get back to the big ass fans hotline
and see what John Short has to say.
Speaker 2 (31:47):
Good morning, John Short. We got Nebraska today at noon.
Speaker 10 (31:52):
Everyone were go beating today. We're gonna beat the braskt
because never beating the brasket volleyball is that's time to
do it.
Speaker 1 (31:58):
Well, I don't think too many people have beat Nebraska.
That's why they come into season number one.
Speaker 2 (32:04):
And have you changed it? Had you changed your h
have you changed your prediction on that game or other
on the match?
Speaker 10 (32:15):
No, I'm gonna say match Walckey game in the match
because it's just because we're gonna win because they're not
gonna win any games against us, and we'll sweep them.
Speaker 1 (32:25):
We're gonna win five Biggins, We're gonna win. We're gonna
Larry Voss said, we're gonna win the three.
Speaker 2 (32:30):
We're gonna win.
Speaker 1 (32:31):
Then we're gonnavite him back out for two, just for
two additional matches, just so we can let them know
what the whoopmen feel like.
Speaker 2 (32:39):
Remind him, I know, I know.
Speaker 10 (32:42):
We want a few old to lead, and we're gonna
beat Mississippi by Tim Big against his coming Tatty Street.
Speaker 9 (32:46):
Just bad.
Speaker 10 (32:47):
What we played at midnight? Play six in the morning,
Play three thirty or seven o'clock at night? This man,
what time?
Speaker 9 (32:53):
And play?
Speaker 10 (32:54):
I'm ready?
Speaker 7 (32:55):
Well.
Speaker 1 (32:55):
Doug says that they need to be a little bit
more exciting, man, and he thinks that it's seven o'clock
at night would be more exciting. But he three point
thirty is good enough. Twelve o'clock, everybody's just rolling out.
They don't have enough bourbon in their system.
Speaker 10 (33:11):
Yeah, and if he was playing soccer today, won't win
that game to today was undefeated soccer.
Speaker 1 (33:16):
We play Illinois here at home at the Bell Complex
at one pm, and we don't cover uh, Bo, we
don't cover soccer. I guess we're not covering volleyball either,
because volleyball will be on ABC.
Speaker 2 (33:28):
If you want to watch it.
Speaker 10 (33:30):
Right, I'm gonna watch it. I go and watch it.
I wish say call the game like we hear like
we hear on radio, which they don't do it that way.
They just call it. Just call the game like we
hear Tommy call the games on radio. That'd be great, but.
Speaker 1 (33:45):
Soccer would be hard to call because there's a whole
lot of just footing it around, passing, and there's a
whole lot of what he passes it here, passes like
there's not too many shots on goal, and soccer is
way too long of a game to just be talking about.
Speaker 10 (33:58):
That's something that for the volleyball, that's what you did,
and that's the game I'll tell he's like he tells
the games on radio, so they needed for the volleyball.
Speaker 1 (34:05):
I'm always down for you know, publicized and skinners, winners.
You're right, John Short, John Short, we got to get
to a break man. We appreciate your cop.
Speaker 10 (34:14):
Say welcome, thank you.
Speaker 1 (34:16):
So uh John Short says we're gonna beat Nebraska by
five sets. We're gonna beat them three straight sets, and
then we're gonna take two more, just to let them
know we meant it.
Speaker 2 (34:25):
We'll be back after this.
Speaker 1 (34:26):
You're listening to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk on
news radio six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 8 (34:31):
This is Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk, presented by
the Lead Troop Forge Radio Network on six thirty w
l a P.
Speaker 1 (34:41):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I'm Anthony
White with good old Larry Vall and young Jack Pilgrim.
What happened to your getting us?
Speaker 2 (34:55):
I don't know, man, it was like squashed in the break.
Speaker 1 (34:59):
I don't know, man, man, because we got to continue
this show, and I got to come up with something.
Speaker 2 (35:04):
Isn't that bad?
Speaker 5 (35:05):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (35:06):
I gotta, you know, because it was really you. I
got to convince the fan base. Yes I do, because
I'm here to convince the fan base that we can
go five hundred.
Speaker 2 (35:14):
I do believe we can.
Speaker 1 (35:15):
But you asked me a couple of questions that I
don't have answers to, and I think people come on
here to have answers. But for years on this show,
I've always just wanted to throw around enough information to
you for you can you can arrive at your own.
Speaker 2 (35:30):
Answer.
Speaker 1 (35:30):
And right now I don't have a whole lot of answers,
and Larry Valter is going to act like he ain't
got none. Now Jack will now, Jack will work with me.
Jack will try to get me convinced or unconvinced.
Speaker 2 (35:41):
But I don't know. So you know, it's a long show.
Speaker 1 (35:45):
So Jack Pilgrim after seeing yesterday's game, and Larry Vaughton
need to see yesterday. And I think Larry vaught said
he needs to see two or three games before he
can decide. But two or three games don't matter because
whatever happens after Old Miss, that's not even going to
be a competition. So we're gonna win that game. But
(36:05):
after seeing yesterday's game, how do you how do you
feel about next week's game? And how do you feel
about your preseason prediction on our What did you say
five and seven or something?
Speaker 7 (36:16):
Yeah? I said five and seven, and I still feel
great about that. I lean more optimistic all things considered,
just because the defense is probably better than I expected.
And that was a really high octane top ten offense
that you know for their you know, at the mac
level for what we were going up against. You know,
(36:39):
I think Kentucky did a really really good job. Brad
White's unit really from top to bottom was with spectacular
Really outside of that seven play ninety five yard drive
to close out the game, I thought they were absolutely terrific.
You know, still kind of TBD on the kicking game.
You know, Kaway hit his one one field goal, but
you know, they don't really learn that much from a
(37:00):
single kick. And you know, Aidan Leros was was spectacular
in the plunning game, so really so many good things
that came from it, but just the bad was horrifically
bad with the passing game, and you know, just the
turnovers and losing the turnover battle and the you know,
just self inflicted wounds with you know, Willie Rodriguez fumbling
(37:26):
after our one of very few explosives, and just kind
of the running game showing some some stuff but not
able to kind of grind away you know, five and
a half yards yards per Carrie just kind of lived
in that three to three and a half yards per carry,
twenty rushes for sixty yards in the first half. There's
a lot of like, eh, again, zero production from the
(37:48):
wide receiver unit that was just a massive, massive, just
concern and just wondering where that chemistry is going to
come from with the passing game outside of the tight ends,
and just say that is that that's the big question.
But everything else I think, Okay, how is that any
different than most of the years that we see winning
football under Mark Stoops? I mean, the winning football under
(38:10):
Mark Stoops is high level defense, ho hum offense, hoping
that the running game kind of carries you know, carries
you in terms of the box score. That's kind of
exactly what we saw yesterday, and I was a winning
formula for you know, all those years with Stukes. You
kind of hope that he Calzada just improves ever so
slightly to become average. You know, he was horrible yesterday.
(38:33):
Can he just become average and let everything else take
care of itself. Then you can kind of feel okay,
maybe at about a ball. So this TVD, very very
very TVD.
Speaker 1 (38:47):
That is Jack Pilgrim, Larry Vaught is deal with does
He's just sitting over there scratching his head, So we
ain't gonna let him talk. Get but when we come back,
we gonna let him talk because that's the wealth of
knowledge sitting over there, and we want to see how
he feels about this season. I'm gonna try and get
my get in this back, and I'm gonna come back
and convince you all day we're going bowling again this year.
Speaker 2 (39:06):
Jack Pickram said five and said, we're going bowling. I'll
convince you that when we come back.
Speaker 1 (39:10):
