This is the home of the Wildcats. Six thirty w
l A P.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Welcome here, stocked it the bank. Sunday Morning Sports Talk.
I'm Anthony White along with Jack Kugrim of KSR and producer.
Both coming to cars Main Street Market Studios are beautiful
downtown lexing to Kentucky. Here find of the season of
the year. Good morning, Jack, Howard. Thing going high. Your holidays.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
Things are going great.
Speaker 4 (00:33):
We still technically have one more Christmas to go today
over at over at the dad's house. Yesterday was that, uh, moms,
we have you know, the weird Wednesday holiday falling on
the Wednesday, you know, kind of had some family had
to have to decide are we doing it the weekend
before the weekend after since I was in New York
(00:54):
last weekend, I we pushed it to this weekend. So
we did some stuff with you know, mostly you know,
the wife's family and some things throughout the week and
then this weekend is kind of my actual you know,
parents' family Christmas. So yesterday was with with mom. Today's
lived with Dad after we wrap up here. So it's
it's still still going on. Still, the magic is still
(01:16):
definitely in the air, and we're having a great old time.
Santo was very very good to Billy this year.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
It was pretty interesting Christmas. This is probably the most
Christmas I had and sometime start with this. There was
no devil eggs. There was no macaroni cheese at all.
So the Christmas. The Christmas menu consisted of salmon, shrimp, chicken, pasta, salad,
(01:45):
betty chini, rick and toni and broccoli. That is what
the new berlinis do. My niece prepared Christmas. She's had
my mim retire from the preparation, so we didn't have
we not have any soul food. It was pretty much, uh,
just those things. I said. So I don't know if
that's the new thing you all do, but that is
(02:05):
what we had. Bo Robinson you had it sounds like
you had a lively time over there. How was your holiday?
Your Christmas? Very good.
Speaker 5 (02:12):
Santa Claus was good to me. It was overwhelming. The
food was my poor parents. They prepared food all day
for twelve of us, and around eleven o'clock Christmas night,
my mom looked at me and said, go home. You
have been here since nine thirty this morning. You have
your own house. Leave And I was like, I don't
(02:35):
want to leave.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
I love it.
Speaker 5 (02:37):
So I was telling Jack, I'm such a huge fan
of Christmas and I like when it's overwhelming and just
completely ridiculous. I had a great time. I think the
whole family knew I had a great time. I think
the whole neighborhood knew. I had a great time. So
it was a lot of fun, but always good to
get together with family this time of year.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
Jack, before we get into this whole show and get
this thing rolled, and I do want to know, did
you guys have soul food? Do you guys have soul food?
Did you have macaroni and cheese? Did you have doubled eggs?
It's funny you say that.
Speaker 4 (03:08):
We actually had some delicious baked mac and cheese and
my mom made so it was very funny hearing that
come out of your mouth that you didn't have any,
because I had plenty of it. It was it was awesome.
We we uh uh did did uh you know the
full full shebang uh for for the dinner and then
you know, my mom we'd kind of turned into a
sleepover Friday night. So Friday night had the big dinner.
(03:32):
Saturday morning, had you know, traditional muffins and eggs and
casse roles and all that stuff.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (03:39):
And then we had chewies. If you had chewies, the
text max, yes I have, Yes I have. And then
we we had that at at uh for for lunch too,
and then and then dinner. Dinner last night was you know,
leftovers and whatever we couldn't fill in our bellies to
start the day and left over from the night before.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
So it was.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
It was a great an absolutely great night and day.
And you know, family in town, got to see your
nieces and nephews, and it's just a really magical time.
So yes, I somehow managed to have more sofa than
the Anthony White.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
So after that, I'm blessed, Anthony.
Speaker 5 (04:16):
I'm gonna send you a pictures of the deviled eggs
my mom made, just so you'll have some this holiday season.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Well, I see y'all gonna rub it in Christmas and things.
My nieces and I really don't eat soul food, So
Christmas and Thanksgiving are the only times a year where
I kind of look forward to my taste buds, like, hey,
what is good? And and I was disappointed. I wasn't disappointed.
The food was good, but it was just not traditionous.
So my taste buds have to wait a little while longer.
(04:43):
But what does not have to wait. What did not
disappoint me was the Bowl season. Jack Pilgrim, it is
bold season of bonus. I did not realize people that
playing Bowl games there were so many fights. I cannot
believe that people that playing Bowl games had that much animosity.
It's like it's a rivalry. There's not really a rivalry.
You know. They were for used that people didn't want
(05:04):
to play in the Bowl games. They didn't really count
it on the schedule, and I'm one of those who
really don't count it unless you're planned for championship, Conference championship,
National championship. But there were some The funny thing was
there were some names of these games that kind of
tickled you think, although a lot of the action was
pretty good, what was your favorite Bowl game by name?
(05:26):
Was the one that surprised you this year?
Speaker 4 (05:30):
The only Bowl that matters to me, and whatever mattered
to me is the Pop Tarts Ball. I don't know
if you saw the absolute chaos that came from that,
but my goodness, when you have life size Pop Tart
mascots running around goofing off being dumb.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
They I don't know.
Speaker 4 (05:47):
Last year the top Tart bowl went went viral because
they got, you know, cooked the mascot. Afterward, the MVP
gets to pick what flavor of live mascot popped heart
he eats, and it's a big, massive, giant toaster. They
basically cook themselves to death and it comes out in
(06:08):
a big, life size pop tart and the whole team
devours the MVP flavor pop tart of choice. The most
ridiculous event we have Cole Kubulick dressed up in a
massive pop Tarts. The Gator eight bath was a bunch
of those mini pop tarts. I've never seen anything more
ridiculous in my life. If you haven't seen it, go
watch the replay of that. If you're listening to this,
(06:29):
it was mass chaos. And there was a stretch in
the first half where with six minutes left in the
in the second quarter, I believe there have been eight
straight touchdowns scored. So it's high flying back and forth
touchdown after touchdown touchdown. If it is, if you are
you know, a new you know, just experiencing college football
(06:51):
for the first time, and to kind of say, hey,
this is the best version of college college football. Go
watch the Pop Tarts Bowl and you will fall in
love forever and always. And uh, there's number one bowl
in my heart forever now because of the absolute ridiculousness
that it was last night.
Speaker 5 (07:07):
The entire marketing and gimmick of the Pop Tart Bowl.
It's brilliant, I mean so good that there are sprinkles
on the sideline on the field, that's how.
Speaker 3 (07:19):
Yeah, I did not know that.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
I did see some sideline I could not make sense
of what they were. But Jack or both of you,
you said the Pop Tart Bowl, I did watch that.
When I watched that in its entirety, and does not
know why cam Ward did not finish, and that was
something I want to discuss with you because he could
be going to your New England Patriots, Jack Pilbrim. But
I did like the commentary from the Snoop Dogg Arizona
(07:45):
Bowl presented by Jen and Juice, Doctor Dre and Soup,
and that was that that doesn't challenge the Pop Tart
Bowl at all.
Speaker 4 (07:54):
Commentary was excellent, But no, it does not does not
challenge it because on the that's what made the Pop
Tar Bowl so special, The on field product matched the ridiculousness.
I mean, when you have a forty two forty one
finish with the winner, you know, coming out on top
across the finish line in the final minute, I mean,
(08:15):
it is all gas, no breaks from start to finish.
You get chaos controversy with Cam war you know, putting
up one hundred ninety yards and three touchdowns in the
first half and then saying, you know what, I'm good
and then just sitting out the second half. Chaos controversy.
You gotta love that. And then beyond that you get
the pop Tarts. You get all the you know, cannibalism
(08:35):
with pop tarts eating each other. It's just it's just
the weirdest, most chaotic, beautiful event I've ever seen. So
as much as I love my guy Snoop, it does
not compared to the beautiful pop Tarts Bowl we all
got to enjoy yesterday.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
While I was trying to figure out the whole idea
of the Snoop Bowl and trying to figure out so
many things behind it, and I was also trying to
figure out why Cam war Or did not finish the game. Snoops.
He pays nil to the players and they are obligated
to have. I think they do with football camps or
something on Friday, or they do what else when the
(09:17):
coach of the clinic. I think they do a football
clinic on that Friday before the game, and they're compensated
for nil. And that's why I was wondering maybe kem
Ward played the first half just to collect his nil contribution,
because I think that is well, that's definitely gonna be
a part of the future of bowl games and football
that the players are gonna have to play in the
(09:37):
postseason to get extra nil money. They're not just gonna
get paid after the season's over.
Speaker 4 (09:42):
Are you aware of that?
Speaker 3 (09:47):
Maybe?
Speaker 4 (09:48):
But man with Kim Warner is a guaranteed top three
pick in the NFL draft in five months, Like, he
doesn't need one more nil check unless he's just trying
to pay for his Christmas presents for mom and dad.
And you know, it would be a very nice thing
to be like, hey, Cam, you just need to go
out there, ball out, throw a couple of touchdowns and
(10:10):
we got you. Here's you know, two hundred and fifty
thousand dollars. It's going to pay for your dad. Knew Portie.
You know something something like that. Then I could be like,
I could understand why King war would be like, yeah, sure,
you know that's that's just free money for these Christmas presents.
So that does make a little bit of sense to me.
But man, when cam Ward is not hurting for money,
(10:31):
he's already you know, the all time leading passer in
the history of college football at D one level. Just
broke that record with those three times. Maybe that's all
he wanted. Maybe he just wanted to break the record,
say that he tossed for the most touchdowns and inc
double at football history and then call it a career
before you know, raking in the millions here in the
next couple of months.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
So I get it. I know it was.
Speaker 4 (10:55):
You know, if you if you sign up for something
like that and you have a back and forth battle
the way that game unfolded, and you know that your
teammates are battling, it's a bad look for me and
my opinion, But I would understand why somebody in his
shoes would be like, anything that I'm able to give
is more than what most people in my position would do.
(11:17):
Although we did see Travis Hunter playing his bowl as
they got absolutely wrecked by BYU so, you know, not
a great day for the high, high profile bowl or
at draft picks that didn't decide to play in their
bowl game.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
I'm not gonna beat the dogs out of this thing,
but I have to absolutely disagree with you, Jack. I
disagree with you for this reason. It's a quarterback. Cam
never stepped on the field in the beginning, and it
was a blowout. I would be fine with that. You
made the game close. Now your team is as you said,
your team is out there clawing, scratching and clawing to
win the game. So this backup did nothing to help.
(11:52):
His backup did And I knew they were trying to
get him ready for next year. And it may have
been an agreement that you're only going to play one
half with Cam, like it could have been determined before
the game started. I just feel that we are at
the finish line, as you stated earlier, We're at the
finish line, and my name is Anthony White, and say
change cam Ward's name the Tim Couch and you decide,
you know what. Look, I got the rest of my
(12:13):
future in front of me. You guys try and win
this thing on your own. I just feel like you
can give them thirty more minutes of football and possibly
help your team win. I think that'd be more memorable. Now,
if he messes around and gets hurt, then I'll see
you side. But I don't like the fact that they
started it and when you were at the finish line
he didn't. I think he would help them win. And
(12:33):
that's my point. If it was out of reach, I
had no problem. I just felt like they left the
job had done.
Speaker 4 (12:42):
Yeah, I agree with you, and I think that's you know,
especially in a losing effort. Had they won, I don't
think it would have mattered, you know, I think they
would have said I, you know, he wanted to get
the back up some reps and you know, it didn't
end up hurting him at the.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
End of the day.
Speaker 4 (12:57):
But when you do lose in forty two forty one
fashion and kind of a heartbreaker there at the very
end for him, it does lead to the what could
have been, you know kind of conversations and yeah, it's
thirty more minutes. But if you and I know that,
you know, Colorado took out the massive insurance policies for
the you know, shoulder and you know, Travis Hunter for
(13:19):
their draft stock just in case something were to go
wrong in their Bowl game. You know, it was just
more of an ego hit more than an actual physical
hit for them after getting absolutely just demolished by the BYU.
But cam Ward was a different story. I could see,
you know, the kind of injury issue for him where
it's like, man, I really can't afford to, you know,
(13:40):
take a dumb hit in the game that really, in
the grand scheme of things, does not matter, you know,
But if you're gonna do that, just don't play it all. Like,
I think that's kind of the the point of if
you're going to make that that injury focused decision of Hey,
my draft stock could not be any higher. I'm a
guarantee top three pig. I'm just gonna sit. I'm just gonna,
you know, take a step back and let everybody else
(14:02):
ride this one out, and I'll be the best cheerleader
you've ever seen on the sideline. I would have understood that.
But I do agree when you play the first half
and kind of give them the crumb of of like
of the talent of oh, like, here's here's the crumb
of hope that you were looking for, and then kind
of rip the rug out from underneath them, your your
teammates in the second half has a pretty bad look.
So I see both sides of it. For him wanting
(14:25):
to do it's best for his body and you know,
his future potentially, and what everybody else wants with the teammates,
the players, the coaches, and you know, obviously the fans
were wanting to see a second half of Kim Ward
and the most ridiculous Bowl game of all time. But
that's what made it the best Bowl game of all time.
Speaker 2 (14:43):
That is Jack Pilgrim, and we will continue this conversation
when we come back to you or this is Stockyards
Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk, the news radio six thirty
the Lap.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
This is the home of the Wildcats, six thirty w LAP.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk, Anthony. Jack
Pilgrim was KSR and producer Bowl Robinson. Stockyards Bank is
your trusted partner since nineteen oh four. Head on over
to syb dot com for all your banking and financial needs.
It is Bowl season. We are talking bowl games, bowl
(15:17):
game titles, bowl game incentives and those things. And Jack Pilgrim,
the thing that caught me really off guard yesterday were
how many fights that were now, yo, boys, I don't
know how big of a Miami fed you are. They
were fighting amongst their sales on the sideline, which is
which is lightweight ridiculous in itself. As the last game
(15:37):
of the season, so the frustration may have boiled over.
East East Carolina and North Carolina State got into a
little scoff when the referees came out bloody. But the
one that really upset me, and I just kind of
wanted your take. The one that really upset me was
Arkansas's offense line Fernando Carmona that on Texas Tech safety CJ.
(15:58):
Baskerville's leg, and it looked terrible that this dude got
to be probably three hundred pounds. The guy was helpless.
He's underneath the pile. It's not like he could protect himself.
The concerning part to me was what was the focus, Like,
what were you angry about? Why did you have why
do you have a problem with this person? It's not
like you know encounference rivals. I just so, what was you?
(16:20):
I mean, what would your take on the fights in general?
What was the take on the stomping? Did did you see
the Arkansas stumping? I'm sure you did. It was all
over social media.
Speaker 4 (16:29):
I saw that one, and I saw the one that
that left the rest bleeding. Afterwards, the ref was getting
getting into it, and he found himself hobbled getting you know,
bleeding run off the field. You know, with how much
has been made about, you know, how little Bowl games matter,
and how people are just using it to you know,
(16:49):
either just collect the gifts and the nil packages that
come with it, or just saying, you know, screw it,
I don't need this. It's not important to me. You know,
it's not a real regular season game. You know, everybody's
opting out. Why you know, if they're if they're not playing,
why not? You know what, why would I So with
that type of mentality kind of surrounding these Bowl games,
(17:12):
I do almost kind of appreciate the you know, the
the the animosity and the tension and the you know,
those things and games that hadn't necessarily mattered in recent memory.
You know, hey, you're getting the stars playing, whether it's
a half or not or you know whatever. Some some
of these you know, higher profile quarterbacks are playing, but
very few opt outs, and of the guys that are playing,
(17:34):
we're getting dudes kind of you know, checking up top
and and then squaring up like it's not a great look.
I don't love the you know, the actual fighting. You know,
you don't have to solve everything that way, but it
does kind of show the emotion and you know, things
that are going into these games that hadn't mattered.
Speaker 3 (17:56):
In the past.
Speaker 4 (17:56):
So if that's what it takes, you know, I'm I'm
all the way for it.
Speaker 2 (18:01):
I think there's an unwritten rule that just like boxers,
MMA fighters, any I think any competition you go into,
especially football, you kind of go into this. You see
boxers shake hands at the end of it, and my
MMA guys trying to choke guys I don't break their limbs,
and by the time the fighter is over, they make
sure each other is healthy. They check on they're not healthy.
(18:21):
That the football game, to me is the same thing.
We all want to make sure we all leave out
of the arena, out of the stadium healthy, like if
you can prevent it, like I mean, you're going out
there giving your hardest. The problem I had with the
step by Carmona was that he tried to hurt the
person like you blatantly tried to hurt. It wasn't in
the middle of action. You remember a couple of years back,
(18:42):
wasn't quite a few years now, lin bowden to use
his hands. He had to use his fistic cups. Had
a bunch of guys. But it was because of things
that happened, activities and festivities leading up to the Bowl game.
But I don't really think it was dirty. I think
it was just hand the hand warfare because of you
(19:02):
disrespected him and he wanted to prove that he disrespected.
I don't think he was really out to hurt the guy.
He was trying to show him. He didn't appreciate it.
But we will continue more of this conversation when we
come back after this your listen to Stockyards Bank Sunday
Morning Sports Talk on News Radio six thirty WLP.
Speaker 1 (19:19):
This is the home of the Wildcats, six thirty w LAP.
Speaker 2 (19:24):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. AM Anthony
White along with Jack Tugram, with Kssorr and Bo Robinson
producer Bo Robinson. This hour Sunday Morning Sports Talk is
brought to you by a Country Boy Brewing. If you
would like to join the show, eight five nine to
eight zero two two eight seven eight five nine to
(19:45):
eight zero cats. Let's get to the big ass fans
hotline and see what mister John Shore has to say.
Good morning, John Shirt. You're a great American, y'all.
Speaker 1 (19:55):
Gersdy, yesterday would be is geneva game is to be
West Kentucky is seventy to eighty eight.
Speaker 2 (20:04):
That's a good game. It was a very good game. Stracking, uh,
stracking eight more were unstoppable.
Speaker 3 (20:13):
Yes, they were in and we're gonna be let's see,
we saved about fifteen Biggins at Thursday.
Speaker 2 (20:18):
We're gonna be around about the safety Biggins is easy. Yeah, yeah,
I see us beating Brown by about fifty biggins. Did
you know that Western Kentucky was the most winning IS
women's team in the state? John Short Yes, the game? Yes, yeah,
(20:39):
because they made the final fours in nineteen.
Speaker 4 (20:43):
Two and nineteen ninety three and I think nineteen ninety six.
That man's high for a sentence.
Speaker 2 (20:49):
I didn't know that. When else you got forced that's
pretty much about it.
Speaker 3 (20:56):
Did you get Christmas? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (20:59):
I did have good Christmas. I didn't get the food
that I wanted. I didn't have a soul food, so
it was a little bit disappointing there. But you can't
go wrong with salmon and shrimp and some of the
other things I had fetichini, couldn't go wrong with those things.
I just listened to soul food from my childhood. Well, well, John, sure,
(21:21):
we appreciate you. You're a greater America. Thank you, thank you,
Uh Jack Tilbrim. What has been all over the news
feed and I hope you can break all this down
to me because this is your expertise, This is your
cup of tea, Caleb Wilson. This is what the rumors are.
The rumors are that Caleb Wilson has already signed. I
(21:46):
hear it's down to us in North Carolina, but we
haven't said anything. You can't be sports wise. And if
he had signed, he could not have signed until January,
which that's when he's gonna announce it, but not have
happened December. Am I correct?
Speaker 4 (22:02):
But where's where.
Speaker 2 (22:02):
Are these rumors coming from? And which ones on k
de boom.
Speaker 4 (22:08):
You you are correct that that is the rumor at
least what you read on Twitter and social media and
social media and and message boards and uh you know,
discord accounts.
Speaker 2 (22:21):
That so that.
Speaker 4 (22:24):
It's complicated because now the national letter of intent is gone.
People sign with schools now with just financial aid paperwork,
but a new kind of wave. And the the way
people kind of unofficially signed with schools now is with
(22:44):
nil deal. So there's if you sign an nil deal
with you know, a school or you know a certain
company in in Lexington or you know Chapel Hill or whatever.
You know, that's kind of the gray area of Okay,
is he signed with Kentucky because he got an nil
(23:06):
deal with somebody in Lexington. That's the kind of gray
area that I think people are confused by, because yes,
there is speculation that Caleb Wilson, a you know, premium
product as a recruit who.
Speaker 3 (23:19):
Is going to demand and is demanding.
Speaker 4 (23:21):
You know, seven a seven figure deal of some sort
to play college basketball wherever he lands, part of those
conversations and involves in il and you know, to get
those ducks in a row, you have to have those
conversations with you know, the car dealerships and all the
local you know, local brands and things like that. So
(23:46):
the speculation is that, you know, did he sign a
national letter of intent with Kentucky during the early signing period. No,
he did not, but did he potentially you know, reaching
a green with you know, a local nil deal situation
that has you know, allowed him to you know, continue
(24:08):
those those conversations further with Kentucky. But that also doesn't
limit him from signing the same stuff with with UNC
and avoiding it once he gets to campus or whatever.
Like it's it's not. It is a good sign that
things are moving forward in that way with one particular school.
And yes, I do think that it is Kentucky. I
still think that it's going to be Kentucky when he
(24:30):
does and us going public with a commitment here in
the next couple of weeks in January. But it's not
just as cut and dry as he signed with Kentucky.
Thus he is coming to Kentucky. It's it adds just
a little bit more gray area with this nil stuff
where you can have these negotiations and potentially even sign
(24:51):
in il deals and still you know, potent there is
a potential route for him to not end up on campus,
if that makes sense. So doesn't totally answer your question,
but also kind of gives you some of the backstory
of why the speculation is what it is publicly on
Kalla Wilson.
Speaker 2 (25:11):
And that is a six nine forward three, number three
in his position, number one in the state of Georgia,
top ten nationally based off where you're looking at more
or less top five or top ten.
Speaker 4 (25:26):
Yeah, oh yeah, he's, for my money, top five in
the country without a doubt. Skilled, versatile, you know, can
play three through five, you know, a growing jump shooter,
but also a guy that is just so skilled and
you know, kind of imagine an upgraded version of Andrew
Carr that we're seeing right now, where you know, he's
(25:47):
comfortable stepping out to the three point line and taking shot,
making shot, but also just really fluid and you know,
poised in mechanically fundamentally sound inside it as a post
thread and unbelievable defender.
Speaker 3 (26:02):
He's he's a better defender than he.
Speaker 4 (26:04):
Is offensive thread long, athletic, you know, really timely shot blocker,
and you know, can can guard multiple positions, can guard
three through five. So there's a lot to love about
Caleb Wilson when his when his motor is humming there
there aren't many more dominant threats on both in the
floor than than Caleb Wilson. He is worth every single penny,
(26:26):
whatever it costs, whatever anil deal it takes to get
it done. I think this would be Mark Pope's first,
you know, true home run hit. I love Jasper obviously,
I love a Kine Lewis, I love Malachi Mareno, but
this would be the first true talent that would take
you know, Kentucky and Mark Pope, especially from a recruiting standpoint,
to get that national respect of Okay, it's not a
(26:47):
guy from his backyard. It's not you know, a four
star guard.
Speaker 2 (26:52):
Out of d C.
Speaker 4 (26:53):
This is a true, you know, blue blood level talent
that Mark Pope is getting over the best of the best.
That that would be a true home run hit for Pope,
and that I think things are trending in the right
direction for sure.
Speaker 2 (27:07):
Get to the other people that Mark Poper are looking at.
What would be the reason? Was it just not in
no very early sign up peiod? Was it not clear?
I just feel like if people listening may want more
clarity because I ain't one hundred percent clear. I heard
everything you said. But if now, if November was not
the time and we're still waiting until January and we
(27:27):
both think that what kind of things is it is?
It could money be influenced the sway of decision? Possibly?
I'm not I'm not asking you to speak of give
up any dirt, but would that be the reason that
he that he didn't do it in early sign of it?
Speaker 4 (27:45):
Yeah, And you know you talk to him and he'll
tell you that, you know, he just wants to see,
you know, the trajectory of these programs and how they're
being coached and how these players are developing over the course.
Speaker 3 (27:57):
Of a season. And you know, you get the state.
Speaker 4 (28:00):
Wins over Duke and Gonzaga and they're fun and exciting,
but you know, you really want to see how things,
you know, transition from the non conference into the conference
and you know, is this team what we kind of
hope and dream they could be and what we've seen
them be at their peak or did they kind of
peak early and trend downward? And you know, those are
(28:23):
the things that you know, Caleb Wilson and his dad,
Jerry are are brilliant, brilliant people like as as bright
of basketball minds, and they're savvy, they're they're very very
technical with everything that they do. So they do just
want to just confirm, you know, I think had he
committed in November, like we all kind of you know,
(28:43):
hoped it would have been Kentucky without without a doubt,
but it was and I think he would even tell
you that, but he just wanted to see how things
transitioned over the course of a season to to kind
of confirm his his initial thoughts because it is just
brand new.
Speaker 3 (28:58):
It is fresh.
Speaker 4 (28:59):
I mean, think of North Carolina on the same on
the same struggling to maintain leads and how they're being
coached and how little they're getting out of their front
core while the guards are kind of doing all the
heavy lifting there and things little things like that, are
you know, working against North Carolina too? So yes, I
(29:20):
do think nil is definitely a part of it. I
do think that there are some teas to cross and
eyes to dot. That again, that's why I haven't been
you know, one of the guys saying, Oh, we're just
waiting for him to go public with this commitment because
it's it's you know, locked and loaded, fine steel delivered.
Because that's not true there. They're still moving parts and
(29:40):
I know with certainty that Kentucky is operating in that
way too. Where do they feel good about where things stand? Yes, absolutely,
because they worked really really hard to close and land
this kid. But they also know that it's never done
until it's done, and they're not going to assume that
it's done, you know, just because some message board rumors
and social media scuttle but kind of indicates that. So
(30:03):
things are trending in the right direction. I would not
trade Kentucky's position for Kayleb Wilson with with anybody. But
it's it's not over until he announces I am committed
to the University of Kentucky. Let's let's let's go beb
in that. That's that's the next step. And we could
see that.
Speaker 2 (30:19):
Come in the next couple of weeks and we get
Caleb we already Jasper and Malika okayden as you as
you said, are we are we we finished these.
Speaker 3 (30:33):
That would be ideal.
Speaker 4 (30:35):
I think they really like the you know, they're they're
juggling talent versus experience because they know that this team,
as experienced as they are and skilled as they are
in their kind of you know, niches, not any pro talent. Really,
if you're looking for you know, future NBA All Stars,
(30:56):
there there are not on this on this roster. You know,
Jackson may get drafted. Kobe's kind of flirting with draft status,
Brandon Garrison is a future draft guy. Colin Chandler is
a future future draft guy, but nobody on this roster
right now. You can kind of pencil Intos a surefire
draft pick, and we're kind of seeing, you know, with
the length and athleticism and some of the you know,
(31:19):
things that made John Caliperry coach teams so so excellent before.
Because sometimes when you got dudes, dudes are just better
than teams that don't have any dude. So we're seeing
some of that, as we saw against Ohio State. When
you got just athletes, they can beat you.
Speaker 3 (31:34):
Off the dribble.
Speaker 4 (31:35):
Sometimes it's tough if you're if you're not making shots
to push back, and that's how you lose games. So
they're kind of finding that balance of we want both.
We want experience, but we also want dudes who can
take a game over and win you a game. So
how many of those young talents are you willing.
Speaker 3 (31:53):
To bring in?
Speaker 4 (31:53):
They would like to keep it at for but if
there's a you know, Tyrone Stokes reclasses from twenty six
or twenty five and says I want to be here.
He's one of the most dominant high school players in
high school basketball. You don't turn that opportunity down. So
that's just an example. But they have a plan, but
it can be flexible given the circumstances. And you know,
(32:16):
if there isn't a ton of talent in the portal
that you know that they that interests them and fits
what they're trying to do, then maybe they do say
I'd rather have this reclass kid that is kind of
one of those tweeners, could be good enough talent wise,
but maybe a longer term project. That's just something that
that you know, you don't you never know until you
experience the portal and you're you're sitting in it. Uh,
(32:40):
you knows as they will as they did this past
cycle and what they're going to experience here in the spring.
So as things stand right now, I do think Caleb
would wrap things up with some you know, caveats of
it just depends on what kind of pops out out
of in the portal process.
Speaker 2 (32:55):
And Jack, flexibility is the operative word when we come
back from his break. I'm gonna I'm gonna give you.
I'm gonna give you a flexibility to change your thought
process and our basketball team. I've been on the message
boards and I've been looking around at some of the
stuff that happened in New York and I don't think
it were focused. I think it was a one off game.
I think you too hard on this. We'll talk about
that on the other side of this break. You're listening
(33:17):
to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. When these radio
six thirty WLP.
Speaker 1 (33:21):
This is the home of the Wildcats, six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 2 (33:26):
Welcome back to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I'm
Anthony White along with Jack Pilgrim of kay Sorry and
producer Bo Robinson. He's playing New York state of mind
because when Kentucky played Ohio State in New York, they
(33:46):
looked unfocused, They got away from popball, they started playing
a little selfishly. I think they were just a little
flat on all those things were said. And Jack Pilgrim,
you knew this at that point in time when we
had to show a week ago and they haven't played
in a week over a week. But the idea and this,
I don't want any slander, I don't want any back
(34:10):
las from this, but the fact that I did not
know theewter The pictures were beautiful that two people got
engaged in New York. So it was planned, it was
kind of rehearsed, it was going to be a big moment.
It's probably emotionally driven where you said last or yeah,
last week that you know they were they went to
New York kind of in a vacation mode, you know,
(34:30):
to have a good time as well as play a
basketball game. But there may have been other things on
the front of their mind. And I did not realize
that people have plans to get engaged or dig get
engaged in those type of things, which means they probably
weren't focused. So this was a game that they weren't focused.
So I'm not with you yet, I'm not counting them
out with you yet. I know the SEC is going
to be gruely. We got Florida Friday, but I'm giving
(34:53):
you a chance to retract your negativeness about our program.
Speaker 4 (35:00):
I I my frustration last week was all very you know, short,
you know, all in the short term with you know,
potential upcoming concerns with the SEC, and that hasn't gone away.
I do think that this team needed a good old
kind of smack in the face to well, you know,
(35:20):
this little wake up call to say, hey, you know,
the laxadaisical approach is not going to work against physical,
talented teams that we're going to see every single night
in the SEC. And like I said last week, I
would rather take a twenty point beat down in a
you know, weekend before Christmas. People aren't really tuning into
you know, CBS Sports Classic Kentucky Ohio State, like you know,
(35:44):
had that been Kentucky Duke and the Champions Classic, I
think it would have been a different story and we'd
have you know, Stephen A. Smith talking trash and after
the fact on first take and all those things. It
didn't get a whole bunch of national buzz. Kentucky still
sticks in the top ten. It was a good little
wake up call without having like a lasting, you know, lingering,
(36:06):
you know effect after the fact. So I'm glad that
they got their little wake up call. I think they
learned a lot from it and you know kind of
address like, hey, you know, we're going to have to
create more shots. We're gonna have to look for each
other instead of trying to you know, isobal you to
death and realize, you know, this is not a team
that's gonna just crush you with one on one like
(36:27):
this is going to be a team that has to
create for one another with you know, kind of two
three four step actions that are going to create open looks.
And it might be a little bit more challenging in
the short term for you know, from a coaching perspective
to you know, help create some of those shots. But
that's gonna still get a whole heck of a lot
out of this team, and they're they're certainly capable to
say I still believe that this is a team full
(36:49):
of shot makers that I think as the clean looks
start to kind of come back, the efficiency is going
to go up. So I don't have any long term
you know, can about their talent and their abilities and
their shooting and the things that kind of make them
special to begin with. The one thing that I did
not think would be sustainable is they're you know, them
digging these early holes thinking of they're just immune from
(37:13):
from losing in the second half or immune from getting
their butts kicked. We saw that we got the experience
in real time, and I said last week, a twenty
point loss against Ohio State the way they played would
be a forty or fifty point loss against a Tennessee
or an Alabama or in Auburn. So I'm glad that
they got their wake up out of the you know,
wake up call out now, and you know they're able
(37:36):
to regroup over this holiday. And yeah, seemed like twelve
guys on the team got engaged in New York and
they were seeing Hamilton all these different plays. So you know,
maybe it was they just got into Christmas period a
little bit too early.
Speaker 2 (37:49):
I'm glad you back on the wagon. I don't have
a lot of faith that Florida can close out effectively
on our shooters. So if we can shoot and we
can hit them, I think you would be surprised. We
will continue this conversation on the side of the break.
