Speaker 1 (00:02):
This is Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk, presented by
the Lead Troop Barge Radio Network on six point thirty WLAP.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Welcome in Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I'm Anthony White,
along with Jack Pilgrim and Larry Vaut, coming to you
from Clark's Main Street Market Studios and rainy downtown Lexington, Kentucky.
Clark's Pumping Shot return refreshed every few guys. I'm gonna
start off. I usually ask you how you guys are doing.
(00:32):
I'm letting you know I'm doing terrible. Larry Vaught, Jack Pilgrim,
I'm soaking wet, and I did not drive my car
to work today, and I may or may not need
to jump once I get back home because my battery
is completely dead. Because yesterday afternoon I was working on
my car, did a couple of things. Because Larry Vaught,
(00:54):
you will be happy about this. Mama White is in
town with my sister, so I've been trying to take
care of them and running.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
Them around a little bit.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
And my sister says, have you found your keys yet? Nope,
haven't found my keys. Looked up high and low, hither
and thither, hither and thither. Nowhere can I find the keys.
Let me check in the car because for some reason
I think they're in the car Larry Vat. They are
in the car with the ignition turned on since noon yesterday.
(01:29):
So now the key won't even come out. So even
if I had to go to work, I could the
key to However the car is built, the key will
not come out of the ignition because I don't know
whatever reason to chip the thing whatever, so it doesn't
come up. So I was almost late to the show,
and I told bo Man, look, I don't even have
variety at this point, but I'm gonna get there as
soon as possible. So we did make it in time.
(01:50):
So everything is pretty good on my hire things.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
And Larry Vaught well.
Speaker 4 (01:56):
Better than you. Better than you're in I've never quite
heard of you in there that you can't take it
back out. I mean, I can understand why your batteries did,
but you'll have to get somebody the better otto mind
than me to help you with that. But hopefully all
that will work out for you. But it's a day
where the sun truly didn't come up in Danviell today,
and I thought we were going to have such a
(02:17):
glorious Sunday to talk about things, and once again it
just kind of let it slip away. I had really
had a good weekend. I thought last night there at
about eleven o'clock it was going to end in a
way I never thought it was possible. And then just
when you wanted to think, there it went snatched.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
Away, snatched the feet from the jaws of victory.
Speaker 5 (02:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:41):
I mean, I don't ever remember a game where all
the numbers indicated such a disparity for Kentucky. I mean,
if you just looked at the numbers, didn't know when
who won the game, you thought, well, Zucky probably won
thirty five to ten something like that.
Speaker 6 (02:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
Yeah, we had a loan show. We're absolutely going to
have to get to those things. Uh, Jack Pegrim, what
about yourself? Basketball season is almost efficiently, we're a week
a little under, we're under a week from actually seeing
these guys participate. So I know that got to make
you happy. But otherwise, how was your weekend, your weekend,
your week in general?
Speaker 7 (03:18):
Well, yesterday was Big Billy's second birthday, so we were
very excited to go to Infinity. Infinity and beyond. That
was the theme of his birthday party. But man, just
it was so cool just having so many family members
and friends and and just loved ones that have poured
so much into you know, Billy and and you know
(03:40):
kind of made the first two years such a joy
with with him in our lives. So to be able
to you know, share that with him and experience that
with him and and you know have him. You know,
he's just getting to that age where he's processing everything under,
is starting to kind of understand you know, the world
around him and who's there and and you know who's
there to support him. And he just had so much
(04:01):
joy yesterday. So yeah, you know, last night just sucked
the life out of you. And it was just the
worst possible way to lose a game and all that stuff.
But you know, you know, like things could be worse,
because you know, the two year old birthday party was
pretty darn cool and pretty darn special with a lot
of loved ones. So you know, I'm not a big
(04:22):
old Debbie downer this morning.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
I'm actually feeling pretty good.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
And uh, I mean, we do have a long show,
and the theme of the show for me thus far
has been because I watched the game with a bunch
of co workers, and I talked to our our producer
this morning, and I'm hearing in you guys voice and
it kind of goes to me some people were glad
or they didn't want to watch the game. No one
(04:47):
wants a silver line and no one wants moral victories.
So it kind of goes to is it better to
have loved and have lost and than to have never
loved at all? And I say that because the cutter
bowlie shows that he's getting better. He's starting to recognize
the pressure. He's starting to do the pre snap. He's
standing in the pocket. He did there's a couple of times,
but he's still young and he you know, he's still
(05:08):
getting to know. He stayed in the pocket way more
times than I would have expected him to. He looked
down the barrel a lot of times. He started checking
down on the hot ross, which I've told you guys
for weeks. If they bring the house, just replace the
guy that's not blocked wherever he's coming from, just throw
it over his head. Someone's going to replace him. The
commentator said the same thing. So he's doing so we're
making progress there. Larry vaugh we ran eighty five plays,
(05:30):
Larry Vaut, damn near four hundred yards offense three ninety
five and the great, the great Nephew Manning. Look, but
I get I think this whole year, I think the
hype may be too big for him, and he may
it may click for him at some point. But cutter
Bowdi Larry Vaught was the best. What's the best quarterback
on the field yesterday.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
Yeah, Kentucky had the best quarterback on the field. They
had the best defense on the field. I think overall,
except for three or four plays that Texas maybe, but overall,
think the Texas or the Kentucky defense was better or
just smothering. Again, you go back to two punt returns
and a couple of third and fourth down calls I
(06:13):
didn't quite understand from the Kentucky standpoint, And you're going
to especially have to use your football mind, I think
to explain the last four plays that Kentucky ran to
Jack and I because I listened to Mark Stoops after
the game and he said he had no regrets with
what's going for what they did. But then he also said,
(06:34):
you weren't going to throw me about under the bus
and talk about play calling. Well, I think when he
said he wasn't going to throw me about under the
bus and talk about play calling. I think that was
pretty much throwing him under the bus.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
Jack, is it better to have loved and lost? Or
you like the effort put forward so you respect it
because last you, I don't think, commented a bunch of
Larry Vaught and his and he filled the fan base
just wants excitement? Is excitement maybe forty point games. Excitement
may have an opportunity to win at the end and
fumbling the bag. I mean, I can understand that, But
(07:04):
the whole idea of a lot of things look good.
Yesterday defense looked good, yesterday, offense looked good, yesterday quarterback
is coming along. I know people probably still want Stoops gone,
but these guys are just yelling together. Hell, we have
fifty We started with fifty new players on the roster.
So Jack Pogman, is it better to have loved me.
Speaker 3 (07:23):
And have lost? Or would you just would have never
want us to have loved at all?
Speaker 7 (07:29):
Yeah, it's tough, man. I think last night was the
very first time that I genuinely felt bad for everybody involved.
Like I you know, I am so unbelievably sick of that,
let's get back to work. Let's you just totally disregarding
and ignoring the elephant in the room and how angry
fans are, and just showing up every day with a
(07:51):
big old smile on your face and acting like nothing's wrong.
That it has just warned me to pieces and I'm
over all of that. But last night, I think for
the very first time, was the all right, what's not
working here? Because we thoroughly dominated them on both sides
of the football. As you said, Cutter thoroughly outplays arch Manning.
(08:13):
You know, you win in every single category, everything points
you even like the football gods gifted Kentucky. You know,
how often do we end a game saying the ball
bounce Kentucky is like four fumbles that all landed in
Kentucky's lap. You didn't lose any of them. Two muff
pump punts, you land on both of them like that.
(08:35):
That is a recipe for failure all day, every day
and twice on Sunday for Kentucky football. And they managed
to not screw up any of that. And then you
lose with two punt returns. And that's that's that. Like
watching stoops at the podium, for the very first time,
(08:56):
I think he recognized, Okay, this is you know, nine
straight SEC losses in general, ten straight at against Power
Conference opponents at home. We haven't seen a victory at
Kroger Field against a team with a pulse in a
couple of years. I think the weight of that is
starting to hit. And for the first time, there was
(09:18):
some some humility in Stoop's voice where he was at
the podium, going, hey, this is a results based business.
I know you are the only thing that matters is
at the bottom of line. At the bottom line, we
lost this football game, and you know, I feel for
the fans that continue to show up for this, you know,
for a losing product. You know, we did everything that
we could. I mean they doubled up on yardage, tripled
(09:39):
up on first downs, doubled up on total time of possessions,
I mean crushed them across the board, and it still
wasn't enough. So there was just kind of the sense of,
you know, maybe maybe this is like just not meant
to be, you know, just there's that sense of you know,
like when you're going through a breakup and you know
that you know you love the person and you you
(10:00):
love the memories and things are you know, so many
beautiful things in the past, but you're just like, man,
I'm not seeing a path for this to work out
in the future, and it's that that sad man, maybe
this is best for all of us. I just kind
of got that vibe listening to Stoop for the very
first time last night.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
I know it was sad.
Speaker 7 (10:18):
It really was tough because again, I've always liked Stoops.
I do, you know, want what's best for him because
it has been what's best for the program for so long.
But it just does not feel like the trajectory is
going that way. And last night just kind of felt
like the embodiment of that where just couldn't do it
when everything was point in your direction.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
Larry twenty six verst downs Again, I said, with eighty
five total plays, which you know we to me that's
not a big deal, but Van Hous and a lot
of guys feel like our play kind of You've brought
it up a lot over the past couple of years.
How many plays are we getting, how many rips are
we getting on offense? Does and it typically goes up
the more you sustain drives and stay on the field
and convert on third down.
Speaker 3 (10:58):
But eighty five is a ton.
Speaker 2 (10:59):
That is ton for us because we usually stay around sixty,
maybe even fifty at times. Cutter Bowley thirty one to
thirty nine. Again, we lost in overtime. We will get
to that down the road. And bonehead decisions. I would
like to know the psyche behind the decision. So you're
asking me for a solution, and one thing you've learned
on this show, you and Jack both. If I don't
(11:20):
have a reasoning, then that makes it even more mind boggling.
You're looking at me for a reason. I can tell you, well,
they did it because of this. There was nothing to
tell you to run the same play back to back
as if you were going to get a different solution
against that defensive front. But where I'm at now, Larry,
I watched some of the Old Miss game and I
(11:42):
turned off the game because I thought the game wasn't
hand and I thought there was going to be upset
special on but Georgia, Georgia.
Speaker 3 (11:50):
Things turned around. But that's the Old Miss team again.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
If you say some of the decisions were different, if
we made different decisions, maybe we got an opportunity to
be the old myths which is at this point up
until yesterday, and for most of yesterday it looked like
a team that was going to be in the top three,
top four, going to be in playoff conversation, But our
fans may feel so, is it more that we had
an opportunity and you fumbled it and then you did
(12:16):
it again this week, or is it you.
Speaker 3 (12:17):
Know what the product is there?
Speaker 2 (12:19):
We just got to tighten some things up because right
now the narrative is you're responsible for this ship and
you keep wrecking it. Is there any hope for the
fan base or is this no even the a call
or two overtime loss to a pretty good team, still
(12:39):
a fan base still has no forgiveness.
Speaker 4 (12:42):
Well, I think the fan base is frustrated that it
took to Game six to see this kind of production
from Kentucky and this kind of overall effort on both
sides of the ball. And then I think they're very
frustrated with probably the end of the first half and
the end of the overtime. But I think there's also
(13:04):
a sun, a wraith, or a small hope out there that, Okay,
maybe they can sustain this kind of effort and if
they do, maybe these last six games. They can win
more of them than than what we thought. So I
think right now there's a little bit of renewed belief
and hope, but that it may all depend on what
(13:25):
happens next week against Tennessee.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
Now that is Larry Vaught. He's calling it eight and four.
I'm here for Larry Vaughan. I'm with you eight and four.
Far dude, if you like to join the show eight
five nine to eight zero two two eight seven eight
five nine to eight zero cats. The Blow and White
game happened this week. We will be back after this year.

Welcome back Stockyardank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I'm Anthony White
along with Larry Vaught and Jack Pilgrim. Stockyards Bank is
your trusted partner all the way back since nineteen hundred
and four. So you got banking financial needs head on
over syb dot com. Yes, please do that, guys. No
(14:20):
surprise here. The phone lines are all lit up, so
We're gonna try and get as many in as we
can this segment. So if we don't get you, we're
coming right back to you. We're not gonna do the
talk thing. And then you guys gotta wait. But we
got a herd break coming up in nine thirty, so
we're gonna go in order, Bluegrass.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
What do you got for us? Better love or lost
or never get all?
Speaker 5 (14:45):
I don't know.
Speaker 8 (14:45):
It seems like if it's still love, then she's cheating on. Yeah,
that's the only thing I can figure out.
Speaker 7 (14:52):
Failos.
Speaker 8 (14:53):
I didn't get I didn't get pulled in though I
really didn't.
Speaker 6 (14:55):
I know.
Speaker 8 (14:57):
We left points out there on the We should have
had at least four field goals. Fellas, like, we can't
keep leaving points out there on the field, even in overtime.
Just kick the field goal. Had their offense done anything,
Had Texas moved the ball, Oh, to kick a one
yard field goal, but you've got to have points there
(15:20):
for creative. If they moved the ball up and down
the floor of Texas, it would be a field.
Speaker 5 (15:27):
It would be different.
Speaker 8 (15:28):
But they couldn't move the ball. I was just waiting
for my coach to make some bonehead move at the end,
I didn't get excited. The players played their hearts at
I'm not. I mean, oh my goodness. And you know what,
when Stoops has a couple of touchdowns to play with,
like when where he's a big dog, he gets his
(15:49):
tea prepared, that's where he's in the best position. I'll
give him that. When he's a two touchdown underdog, he
has his team playing. That's always been who he was.
That's always who he is.
Speaker 6 (16:00):
But people.
Speaker 8 (16:02):
Can't you see he looks defeated like he's blaming other people,
but says he's not blaming other people.
Speaker 5 (16:09):
I don't know.
Speaker 8 (16:09):
I'm just ranting you guys.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
I'm just hey, Bluegrass. Let me ask you this. Let
me ask you this. And I'm not in his seat.
I will say if he if he takes advantage, or
if he if he takes the aggressive route and not
go for the field going and overtime and says, you
know I'm gonna score. Are you do you feel better
if the play call was more creative, maybe a bootleg
or roll out, maybe some misdirection, something different, at least
(16:34):
you know it was creative but.
Speaker 3 (16:35):
It failed, or.
Speaker 8 (16:37):
No, the second downplay was signed like at least it
was a little bit of misdirection, Like just tell me something.
And I don't even care that he tried to die
the first time. Just don't die. I'm just thinking that
you can't do that. What is Texas's strength? They got
beef up the middle, Like, you've got to get them
moving lateral. You have got to they can because they
(17:00):
push you backwards. That's what they do. That's their mor
I lived in Austin for eight years. I mean, they've
got athletes glower down there like they just pick and
choose the big monsters that they want. That's who they are.
Oh man, and they don't get me started on our
punts lane. They give up their lanes. They went back
(17:24):
there and danced with the guy instead of trying to
tack lane. Like really, they did not move the ball
on us. Our defense looked tremendous. This is supposed to
be a win this morning, fellas. It's supposed to be
a win. Oh my goodness, Jack, one question.
Speaker 6 (17:41):
Wait, let me go to jail.
Speaker 3 (17:42):
You only got about thirty seconds. You only get one question,
So give it to Jack and we'll we'll throw it around.
Speaker 8 (17:48):
All right, Jack, how Jala doing? Let's get the basketball,
just for a split second, make me feel a little
bit better. Please, I'm bigging thank.
Speaker 3 (17:56):
You for the call. Bluegrass.
Speaker 2 (17:57):
Jack put a pin in that, because you know, we
get a heard break, so we will continue to talk
about that.
Speaker 3 (18:02):
We're gonna talk basketball.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
I was gonna save that for the second hour, but
since Bluegrass called it out, Jack, I'll let you answer
that when we come back. You're listening to Stockyards Bank
Sunday Onneing Sports Talk on news radio six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 1 (18:14):
This is Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk, presented by
the lead troop Forge Radio Network on six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 2 (18:25):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I'm Anthony
White along with Larry Vaught and Jack Pilgrim. It's our
Sunday Morning Sports Talk has brought to you by Country
Boy Brewing bo. Where do you find this stuff?
Speaker 3 (18:39):
Bank? So, there was a song for every occasion out
there in the world.
Speaker 9 (18:44):
If not I can create one and find it? Are
you doing that creating thing when you changed no?
Speaker 3 (18:49):
No?
Speaker 9 (18:50):
This was drive Kick Me Jesus by Bobby Bear. And
then we heard from Vern Gosden this same my first rodeo.
And then before all that I played T for Texas
Tea for Tennessee.
Speaker 2 (19:04):
Yeah, because we did play TU this weekend, then we're
playing UT next week. You just kind of flipped them.
Speaker 9 (19:09):
But you know, I think about this after the game
or during the game. What songs am I going to
bounce back with just kind of reflect the moment and
reflect the theme. And right now it's a bunch of drinking,
crying and fighting music. And now that's why this hours
brought to you by a country boy, Brik nicely done. Yeah,
there we go, Jack Pilgrim, I did want to because
(19:30):
we have so many callers set up, I'm gonna let you.
I'm gonna save the Jalen Low conversation for ten o'clock hours,
So keep tuning in because we have callers. I'm certain
they want to talk football. I don't want to switch gears.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
So Jack Pilgrim, get your notes out at ten o'clock,
not just yet, because I do want to ask you.
I did have some thoughts about the Blue and White game.
Speaker 3 (19:51):
Bet Eh, we'll talk.
Speaker 2 (19:53):
About So let's get back to the phone line to
see what Alvin has to say.
Speaker 3 (19:57):
Good morning, Alvin, what do you got for us?
Speaker 5 (20:00):
Good morning?
Speaker 3 (20:00):
And I'm wet, but I'm good.
Speaker 10 (20:06):
Who do you think?
Speaker 5 (20:06):
What do you think how mommy would have done in
that situation?
Speaker 3 (20:09):
Have no doubt how mum would have done. Ninety five
h option, which is what?
Speaker 5 (20:16):
What's it for?
Speaker 3 (20:17):
Do you want me to tell our place?
Speaker 2 (20:19):
It's actually it actually puts me on an option with
a linebacker or a safety. But also you have Craig
coming across the middle, and then you have a post
on the backside, which that close to the end zone,
it wouldn't really be an option. So if Craig runs
a slant, one of the linebackers have to honor him,
(20:39):
So one of the linebackers have to spread out unless
you're just gonna leave your corner on the island with them,
which you're not gonna do. On the backside, you have
something similar, So either your outside linebackers are going to
help with the slot or the outside receivers, which means
the running back is one on one with a two
hundred and fifty pounder, so he can either go or not,
(21:00):
or he can blitz and if he blitzed, you know
what we do. We replace him. If he blitzes, we
throw the ball right behind him to the running back
and I'll.
Speaker 3 (21:10):
Be the hero.
Speaker 5 (21:12):
Wow, what great information that is. I don't think that
I'm I'm gonna run William Refrigerator Prairie twice on that play.
I think that when you signal you got everybody bunched up,
you go beef on beef. I think Texas win that,
which they did. They win it twice. I think I
(21:33):
go for a field goal and put the game in
the hands of the defense, which was playing outstanding, and
there was some going things that took place. I don't
think that you have to remove the fact that Cutabodi
you just mentioned was thirty one for thirty nine. Manning
(21:54):
was rattled of the whole game as well. When you
look at the staff at the end of the game. Uh,
it's almost like, you know, I'm using a basketball analogy.
Speaker 6 (22:06):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (22:07):
We in some games have hit more threes against other
team in basketball play, but lose the game by two
or three points, and then we find out we missed
twelve free throws. So we've done everything great on the
defensive side of the ball last night, on the offensive
side of the ball last night. Uh. And it's unfortunate
(22:28):
that this embattled coach makes a decision that went against
the thinking of thousands of UK fans, and it just
puts us in a position to where, you know, it's
trick or treat. We tricked off a game where we
could have had a treat and win that game. Uh,
and we'd like, you know, Lucy pulling the ball from
(22:50):
Charlie Brown and beating beating Charlie Brown.
Speaker 2 (22:53):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (22:54):
So it is the president. The music that bol Robinson
was playing would probably lead me to go and take
let's shout a bourbon on a couple of shots of
hot water because it was a disappointing loss.
Speaker 3 (23:06):
Thank you for the call, Alvin. I appreciate that.
Speaker 2 (23:09):
And Alvin took me back down memory lane and I
did love that Bears team. Only problem I have with
refrigerators scoring is that my man, Walter Payton didn't score.
That was one of the people I would always love
to have met in my life. So now you got
me rethinking that, Alvin. But I do appreciate the call.
Jack Pilgrim, I did want to before we get to Frank,
I did want to ask you based off of Alvin's question.
(23:32):
And now the more the callers bring it up, it's
really starting to irritate and upset me that when we
were in the position, we were on fourth down, go
for the field goal. Our defense has been playing really well.
I got more faith in our defense stopping them and
hold them to a field goal. And we'll try it
again in the next possession. Over let's try to run
(23:52):
up the middle. And as Alvin said, or as a
Bluegrass said, they're stout up the middle. Then you try
to dive from three yards out. You're not Reggie Bush.
But I love our running back, so I'm not really
But what was your thought. Okay, we called the same
exact play or I don't know if it was the
same exact play. I don't know what the verbage was
(24:14):
in the huddle. But so this time you think, ah,
they stopped, let's trick them. So, Jack Pilgrim, are you
off of the thought process that maybe let's hit the
perimeters as everybody said, let's let's get outside of the perimeter.
And I'm not saying rush stretch, but give a two
man option. The quarterback bootlegs and keeps it after misdirection
(24:38):
or you know, the tight end does one of those things.
They fall down and get up and they slide out.
But just the fact of the game is on the
line instead of taking the easy three. You call that
play what you just called previously and it was unsuccessful,
and you do.
Speaker 3 (24:55):
The same dog on thing.
Speaker 7 (25:00):
Yeah, that was as frustrating a sequence as I can
remember as a Kentucky football fan, and that's a lot
of frustrating sequences as a Kentucky football fan. I thought
it was soft. I thought it was a really soft,
effortless decision. I think I didn't love the play call,
(25:20):
but I also just absolutely despised the effort on that
those particular plays by Dabell, Like, I just think that,
you know, STEP's clarified after the game that the Superman dived.
Speaker 3 (25:33):
Was not the call, That was not the plan.
Speaker 7 (25:37):
That was hero ball.
Speaker 6 (25:38):
Him viewing in his seeing.
Speaker 7 (25:41):
The highlight play and going in his in his head
afterward where they're gonna be carrying them off in the
in the locker room. Oh wow, what abute man. That
was just an unbelievable Superman dived Dante Man, that was
just the best it was. He he was trying to
play hero ball and he ended up looking like that
that I posted the giff of it on on Twitter Afterworld.
(26:03):
But the fat guy at the All Star Game dunk
dunking on the trampoline that only gets up three feet
and misses the goal by by one hundred yards.
Speaker 3 (26:13):
That's what he looked like.
Speaker 7 (26:14):
Just embarrassing, absolutely embarrassing effort on that play. You're the
best short yardage back in college football a year ago
in Nebraska. You live in the trenches, you you know,
dig those heels and push and push and push.
Speaker 3 (26:30):
That's what you're known for.
Speaker 7 (26:31):
And you're losing all of your leverage, all of your
your your momentum as a big, tough, gritty you know
power back by jumping in the air and expecting that
an absolute bowld up, you know, a brick wall in
front of you is going to just magically let you through. Terrible,
absolutely terrible effort. I despised that that was how, you know,
(26:54):
he cared more about the hero ball aspect than actually
doing what his job was, and I was, you know,
grinding and digging and trying to get through. So yes,
going back to Bluegrass point, yes, absolutely positively I would
have one or two of those short yardage plays where
he doesn't dive forward like Superman. For Dante, sure, totally
(27:17):
fine with that, but when it's clearly not working there,
then Why are we not going misdirection? Why are we
not trying to hit the pilon on the outside, Like,
why are we you know, not adding some level of
creativity instead of just saying yep, screw it, run it
back two in a row. Odds are good that he's
going to get at least, you know, six inches there, Please,
for all that is good in the world, can we
(27:37):
get six inches? No, I'm gonna get to do the
exact same thing, get steamrolled at the at the goal
line and embarrass yourself on national stage where everybody else
up to that point, I thought the execution was amazing.
I thought the effort was unbelievable.
Speaker 3 (27:51):
I loved, loved.
Speaker 7 (27:53):
Kentucky's fight all game long, but I thought that final
sequence was pretty darn week.
Speaker 3 (28:01):
I don't know if I agree with the effort part
from the running back. I don't know.
Speaker 2 (28:03):
I don't like to say, maybe he's done it before
and he has a forty something vertical, but it did
not look like that on the field. I don't know
what the thought process was, but the way you articulated
it tickled me.
Speaker 3 (28:14):
Pink, Frank, what do you got for us? Frank?
Speaker 6 (28:20):
Well, first of all, you can't blame the kid. The
coach was to blame. You score in overtime, that's a law.
You have to score. You don't disrespect the defense. The
defense can then hold them like they did to a
(28:41):
field goal, and you come back in the second overtime.
I've been watching Kentucky football for seventy years and that's
the worst coaching decision I have ever seen. We had
chance to tie, to go ahead and win the game,
(29:02):
or taking it into another overtime. Stups has got to go.
If he doesn't go, then the athletic director should go.
It's either one or both need to go.
Speaker 2 (29:19):
Well, the effort seemed to improve this week, but you
just frank, you just don't like the decision making. But everybody,
I think collectively thinks that the effort has improved this week.
Speaker 3 (29:31):
So he has made some adjustments.
Speaker 6 (29:34):
The effort for the kids has always been there. It's
bad coaching. You don't you have to score points in
overtime to either go and win or continue into the
next overtime. You don't run the ball in the middle twice,
(29:55):
spourk down. You kick the field goal and put it
in the hands of your defense and of them a change.
They didn't have a change.
Speaker 2 (30:05):
Well, thank you for the call, Frank. We appreciate it,
and I think echoes a lot of the sentiments that
he had. It was I would love to hear and
I wait to Monday to hear what he tells Tom
Leach and on his show to see what the thought
process was. And one thing the fan base I do
I think does not like about the game in the
(30:26):
post game is throwing somebody under the bus when you
ultimately make the call.
Speaker 3 (30:31):
Now that I would like to know.
Speaker 2 (30:34):
Did Bush say that you know a coach, Hey, look
I got summed up my sleeve and that's what it
was the coach say, I don't know who?
Speaker 7 (30:44):
Like?
Speaker 2 (30:45):
Who else is? Who else is on the decision making
for some of the play call it? And Stoops gets
a lot of credit for it. And everyone thinks that
Stoops is making these decisions that he could tell him
what to call him with. Now I don't think that's
the case because but also things Stoops is not involved
with it. So at that point it goes completely to
(31:06):
Bush Hampton. But Bush Hampton has assistance, who can you know,
help him on some of the play calling. But I
would really like to know what the thought process was,
Larry Vaught. I know you asked me that I don't
have the answer, and I would love to know as well.
But even more than that, I would like to know
who made that call. Now that was straight, a straight
Bush call. Then it reminds me of nineteen ninety six
(31:30):
and nineteen ninety eight that one coordinator position is costing
a lot of games. Let's get back to the phone
line to see what John Short has to say, John Short,
what do you got for us?
Speaker 11 (31:44):
Hey, we'll best stackle in Texas lost when we be Tennessee,
will be Tennessee by ten Biggins.
Speaker 3 (31:51):
Ten Biggins is a lot of Biggins, yep.
Speaker 11 (31:55):
And also that play you'll go bet to the muddy
Hays say in nineteen eighty seven, we try to inside
the one and didn't work four times?
Speaker 4 (32:04):
Mark, Yeah, exactly right, John Shore. Four times? And well
it was fortant. They started out the five yard line,
but the last play was from the one yard line,
and everybody in the stadium that's gonna run Mark HIGs
again and boom nothing.
Speaker 3 (32:17):
They ran it.
Speaker 2 (32:17):
Well, Mark Hicks probably could jump over the pile. He's
an athletic, he's a he's a short guy. But he's
a he's an athletic.
Speaker 4 (32:24):
He couldn't that day.
Speaker 6 (32:25):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (32:26):
So did he run it in there or did he
try to jump as well?
Speaker 7 (32:30):
He just ran.
Speaker 6 (32:33):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (32:34):
They could have called a bounce play, John Shore. They
could have directed it off tackle and give and then
just kind of uh pin the end, have the tackle
or the tight end, just log the end and the
back and act like he's running.
Speaker 3 (32:48):
Up in the middle.
Speaker 2 (32:49):
Then just bounce it off the side. Now you got
a linebacker chasing as a race to the corner of
the end zone.
Speaker 3 (32:54):
Could have done that.
Speaker 11 (32:56):
Yeah, they could have. Well, we're gonna be Florida and
volleyball the same start team to be Tennessee Last. People
will win that game. Thinkin'st nothing because Parge Last, Wayne Seat.
Speaker 2 (33:08):
Yes, yes, we gotta you know you can check you
can check Florida out on the ESPN both now, Now
this is one we can have on airwaves.
Speaker 9 (33:17):
Right absolutely, So we have number three UK Volleyball and
Florida today at three o'clock six thirty w l A
p for you, John.
Speaker 3 (33:26):
See, so you can watch it and listen to it.
Speaker 11 (33:30):
And how we're doing rugby this year.
Speaker 10 (33:32):
We've ever talking about that.
Speaker 3 (33:34):
Rugby. Is that a club sport?
Speaker 11 (33:39):
Believe it is?
Speaker 6 (33:40):
Do you know that evolved?
Speaker 4 (33:43):
I do not know, John. I'm still trying to get
over the football game last night.
Speaker 10 (33:48):
Huy Duffy.
Speaker 2 (33:49):
We only cover the football that you wear pats because
the women basketball players don't like us talking about the
one that you don't wear pats because it's tougher apparently
than the one we wear pasts.
Speaker 3 (34:02):
Thank you, thanks for the.
Speaker 2 (34:04):
Call, John, Sure we got to hit the break. When
we come back, we'll continue this conversation. You were listening
to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk on news radio
six thirty WLP.
Speaker 1 (34:13):
This is Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk, presented by
the lead Troop Borge Radio Network on six thirty.
Speaker 3 (34:21):
W L a p.
Speaker 2 (34:24):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I'm Anthony
White along with Larry Vaught and Jack Pilgrim. Let's get
to the phone lines really quickly again. See what Larry
has to say. Good morning, Larry, what do you got
for us?
Speaker 10 (34:39):
Well? That song fit is perfect, so we're getting that,
you know, and but anyway, you know, I'll send.
Speaker 2 (34:56):
All right, Hey, Larry, we having a technical issue because
I can't really get taken in what you're saying. So
try I don't know if you can get you off
air and bolke and try to reconnect you, or you
can call back at the time at the next hour
or whatever. But we cannot hear you, So give us
a call back. We'll try you at the top of
the next hour. Larry Vat, we did not really get
(35:18):
your opinion. I know we've been talking about this the decision,
and on Twitter right now acts the people are kind
of talking about the decision at the end of the game,
and they're saying that everybody hates that we just ran
the ball up the middle when we know that's Texas strength.
And somebody pointed out that we had a time out
with such a big call. Yeah, why not use the
(35:39):
time out and coming together with something? Which tells me, though,
Larry Vaught, that we did not call the time out
because it seemed like you had an ace in your pocket,
like you didn't hesitate, you called to play. They ran
out there and you didn't have a little hulder. You
didn't use a time out. There was nothing, so obviously
they were confident in the call. Otherwise I think they
would have used the time out or spent a lot
(36:00):
of time discussing it. They just sent to play right
in as if I thought that it ab Mussels thought
it was.
Speaker 3 (36:06):
Going to work. Did that strike you as interesting that?
Speaker 2 (36:10):
How you know, the magnitude of the game, you know,
trying to get this thing turned around. Your kids have
played their tails off, is right there and you're right
there at the finish line. We just you know, got
to make a couple of plays and we call and
play without anything and no you know, uh collaborating and
to come up with that, well, well got like fifteen seconds, but.
Speaker 4 (36:32):
I think you kind of know you got to get
the point. But here was a quote for Bush Hampton.
You got to make those decisions of what you're going
to live with, and we emphasized we felt we were
going to rely on being downhill with the backs and
our old line, and that was a decision we emphasized
we made.
Speaker 2 (36:49):
I love it. I love it. That's Larry Buck. We
will continue the conversation at the top of the hour.
We'll be back after this. You're listening to Stockyards Bank
Sunday morning sports Talk on news radio six thirty WLAP
