Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk presented by
the lead Troop Barge Radio Network on six point thirty
w LAP.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morne at Sports Talk. I'm
Anthony White along with Larry Vaught and producer Bo Robinson,
coming to you from Clark's Main Street Market Studios in
downtown Lexington, Kentucky. Return, refreshed, refew. We're now glad to
be joined by Chris Shows, director of Athletics, communication for
volleyball and softball, and probably many other things because he's
(00:32):
man and many hats.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
Good morning, Chris, Good morning guys. How are you today?
Speaker 2 (00:37):
We're doing good, We're doing good. What does Chris have
going on today? I know three o'clock is a long
ways away, but there's a lot of things that goals
on behind the scenes before the Gators take the court.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Yeah. Absolutely, this is one of that we always get
up for. This is a big match for the Cats today.
Florida is a great opponent. But to answer your question,
got up a little bit ago and getting ready to
head into the office. I'll get there about four hours
before the game and just get everything lined up and
meet with our ESPN crew to kind of go over
the game day logistics of what intros look like, and
(01:09):
then we'll have a big match that starts at three
to zero two on Flagship ESPN and it should be
an awesome match.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
With Florida coming into town, those being a bigger matt
few do you have anything fan wise? You guys always
have a great environment with the fans and you know
just their interaction with the game. You guys have anything
special player for this game?
Speaker 3 (01:31):
There's two things that are special, I would say, Anthony.
The first thing is October. Obviously is breast cancer wear
it this month. So a lot of times when October
teams do a pink match, that is our pink match today.
So if you are someone who's been effected by breast
cancer or wish to show support for those that are
fighting breast cancer or eradicating to disease, feel free to
wear pink or asking everyone to do that. Our lines
(01:53):
on the court today will actually be pink. Our teams
will have both teams will have some pink on their
uniforms today and then their hair and on their laces.
So we'll be showing our appreciation for those that are
in the fight and our support for them as the
first component. The second is is we've partnered with God's
Pantry as an athletics department every year. They are a
group of people that are giving lunches to underage excuse me,
(02:15):
underprivileged children in the licensing area who can't afford to
get their own school lunches. So we're asking people to
bring in canned food. If you come in the doors,
there's gonna be buckets that you can drop your canned
food off as you come in, and we'll get those
out to the schools into the children so that everybody
can have a nice, fresh meal every single day, which.
Speaker 4 (02:32):
Is what we all want.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
So those are the two things that are important. But
I'll play you Florida is a match that kind of
sells itself. These are the last I believe it's twelve
SEC champions have been between these two schools. Obviously, the
last date of gone Kentucky's way. So this is a
match that we don't have to really promote a whole lot.
This is a match that resonates to nastally. That's why
it's on Blackshit BESPN at three o'clock in the primetime slot.
(02:54):
So there's a lot going on. But that means that
there's a lot of people interested in our program, which
is good.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
Chris Chirz, let me ask you this. We all love
ESPN and you know it's that's where you go for
your sports, and volleyball doesn't have much ESPN coverage as
much as the bigger sports, basketball and football. I will
ask you this, Chris, When I played football back in
the nineteen hundreds, ESPN got cords all over the football
(03:20):
field and we are trying to warm up, like you
can get your legs caught in the course because the
cameramen don't care now mine just twenty twenty five. Maybe
stuff is cordless now, but they're just all in front
of you because they're trying to get good They're trying
to get good footage and good views of things, but
they're just they were kind of in the way, and
it really could get someone hurt. Does those things go
(03:42):
on in volleyball or is that something you don't worry
about because you know you don't have ESPN all the time,
so kind of change your warm ups and you know,
kind of changes how you guys do things. Is there
any modifications for ESPN being in town?
Speaker 3 (03:55):
There really aren't any modifications. I'll tell you that It's
network began to kind of take over the rights of
all the SEC events in twenty and fourteen. You know,
pretty much every single match that Kentucky plays, and pretty
much every other team in the sport as well, at
least in the SEC, it's either televised or extremes on
(04:16):
the SEC network Plus, which is treated just like a
regular linear broadcast. So we have now fifteen years of
experience doing this basically for TV. For volleyball, every single
home mech that we play is on some sort of
streaming platforms, so the cameras we use are always the same.
We have Hawkeye technology, which is the same technology for
replay that you see in football, the same technology replays
(04:39):
that you see in basketball. So there's really no safety
restrictions there. To your question, I think the question goes
to access. I think there are a lot of coaches that,
if they're not used to the spotlight, do they want
ESPN cameras in the locker room before the game. Are
they a comfortable macing up a player for practice knowing
that there could be some things that are sensitive information
going out there. But our head coach, Greig Sinner is
(05:00):
one of the best at letting people inside of the program.
I would tell you volleyball is one of the best
sports that all the coaches in the country. Allowing those
access points for ESPN to give that you were the
best experience. So it's not really a concern for.
Speaker 5 (05:13):
Us, Chris are there's still tickets available for the game today.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
If the inbody would, oh yeah, Larry, I need you
to bring the whole band bill out today. I need
you to get all your friends and you need to
come to Historical World Cosseum and be there at three
ZHO two off the first serve. Well, you got tickets available.
You can go to u cathletics dot com slash tickets.
If you've got a ticket Master account and maybe you're
the game last night, you want to come on back
again to campus that that's another way you can do it.
(05:38):
You can also buy that as you come in, so
if you just show up to the game, you go
to the ticket office, you can buy them on site.
So we got plenty of spots for everybody, and we'd
be loving if everybody could come in and give us
a great environment. I think you kids deserve it today.
Speaker 5 (05:53):
Chris I think a lot of volleyball attention the SEC
is focused on Kentucky and Texas, both unbeaten. But do
I remember going into the going into the season, wasn't
Florida picked to be right on that same level with
Florida with Kentucky and Texas or is my memory bad
about that?
Speaker 3 (06:10):
Well, Kentucky was picked to win the league. They got
eight first place votes and then Florida Texas was picked second.
They got six first place votes in Florida got two.
So I would say probably Kentucky and Texas were the
two front runners, but Florida was right in that boat. Obviously,
Florida had a major event happened in their offseason. Mary
Wise retired at the end of last year. She had
(06:31):
been the head coach there for over thirty years. She
was an institution. She basically built Florida Volleyball and probably
the best head coach in SEC history for the sport
of volleyball. And so they, like everybody else that has
coaching changes these days, they had to go through the
portal and they had to get a new person, and
they had to come in and build a roster. And
Kennedy Martin, who was their best outside hitter went to
(06:54):
ten States, so they had to try to reshuffle the
way that they were playing, and they had to get
new people in town. So there were a lot of
questions about Florida. I think you saw that the first
three four weeks they were kind of stubbing their toe
and that just that traditionally you would not expect Florida
to stub their toe in.
Speaker 4 (07:08):
But if you look at.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
Their trajector the last few weeks, they've kind of picked
it up a little bit. They're getting more consistent. They
had a huge win Wednesday night at Tennessee, who pushed
Texas to five last week. So this is looking more
and more like a Florida team to be come to expect,
and I expect a great match today.
Speaker 5 (07:25):
Okay, now here's what I need you to help me with.
Because my friend Crystal did Us from Key West, who
is a huge Kentucky volleyball fan, was chatting or letting
me know that Kentucky's rank number three in the country
this week, which you think, what that's sweet, But in
the I saw the projected seedings for NCAA tournament. They're
(07:45):
projected as a two seed and not a one seed.
So Pittsburgh and Louisville play each other today, So who
does Kentucky root forward to win the pit Louisville match,
which I don't know what outcome helps Kentucky most in
the rankings with as far as having a chance to
be a number one seed and get the host all
the way through the NC double US.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
Yeah, Well, two things on that learry. The first thing
is if you watch the pitt Louisville match today, which
you talked about one o'clock on ESPN, the selection committee
is actually going to do the first of three unveils,
So they are going to unveil what they're ranking for
the top sixteen would have been if the season ended
this week, and they're going to do that in between
(08:26):
the first and second sets of the pitt Louisville match.
So that's something to look out for. The second thing
is the bracketology that you saw. There is a lot
of different bracketology survolleyball and now there are a lot
of people saying a lot of different things, but Louisville
lost to SMU on Friday night. Those are two teams
that Kentucky beat. That's the check in the Wildcat's box. Obviously,
(08:48):
Kentucky beat Louisville head to head on the road. That's
the check in the Wildcats box. So I would expect
Kentucky to be the three or the four national seats today.
But this is the first time we're getting a read
from the committee in terms of what FAY value. But
if you look traditionally at metrics at the committee value
out of conference strengths to schedule, Kentucky's played one of
the hardest skips in the country. You're looking for top
(09:09):
ten wins. Kentucky's got four of them, three of those
in true road games they have losses, they only have
two of them. They're to the number one team in
the country that has sixty I think sixty three to
sixty seven, first place host to Nebraska and then Pitt
So to answer your question, I think Kentucky's going to
be in the top four. And let me give you
a really coach speak answer here at how you maintain
(09:29):
that just win. The more Kentucky wins, the more they're
going to have a chance to be in the top four. Obviously,
there's a match in two weeks down in Austin that's
going to have a lot to say about what that
looks like But I personally, as someone who has done
this for sixteen years, looking at RPI, looking at data points,
looking at metrics and Francesis schedule and common opponents, I
think Kentucky's in a really good spot to be a
top four national seed right now.
Speaker 5 (09:52):
And Christ Lloyd Larry And that's going to say one
to think, Chris, it's gotta be fun with what you do.
Not only you said, is Kreigs Skinner one of the
most successible coaches in the SEC who does anything he
can to promote the sport. But you have so many
players on this team who have great stories but are
also great interviews and just fun to talk to and
(10:13):
fun to watch play. It must make your job pretty enjoyable.
Speaker 4 (10:17):
It does.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
I mean, there's no doubt about it. Craig is the best.
He is unbelievably accessible. Like you said, he's organized, he's
committed to not always doing what's just best for Kentucky
Volleyball and his players, but the sport as a whole.
He's always been that way. It's one of the things
I respect most about him is, you know, I don't
really talk to him necessarily about every single decision that
they make. At the SEC level when they have coaches meetings.
(10:39):
But Craig is someone in my opinion, that makes the
best decision for the sport as a whole, not necessarily
always the best decision for Kentucky. And that's an admirable
quality that I think someone has. So, yeah, Craig is great.
The players are unbelievable. He obviously recruits them and it
starts with him. But we have great people within our
program going down to you know, the assistant coaches, than
(11:00):
the people that handle our schedules on a day to
day basis, and the managers. I mean, it's just a very,
very very special group of people that we have specifically
this year. This is a team that obviously a lot
of people are paying attention to. There's a lot of
notoriety about the team. There's a lot of star power.
I think a lot of times those locker rooms can
get incredibly divisive at times. There's none of that on
(11:21):
this team. But yeah, at Larry that talks about your question,
Craig is the best of the best. And I will
tell you that, you know, having traveled the country with
him for the last seven years, now, is this sid
the amount of level of respect that he commands from
his colleagues is impressive.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
And Chris, I know this is my last question is
I know this is a pink match, and I don't
want to put you in any uncomfortable position, but I
do know that a lot of people who follow our
shows and follow us covering in Olympic sports and a
lot of female sports, they love the autographs at the
end of different Volleyball does it, Gymnastics does it, and
the kids are always really excited about it. But I
(12:01):
can't remember which sport and if it's you apologize. But
there are some sports that if you lose, they the
athletes aren't available to the public, which you guys don't
lose very often, so I don't think that's the problem
you all have to worry about. But is there opportunities
for autographs at the end of the match or do
you guys have post game of breakdowns.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
No, so you can get autographs after the match, any
match that matter the result, no matter the outcome. We
do a formal autograph session at the beginning of the
year in conjunction with our Fandy and our Blue White. However,
what happens is is after the match is over and
Craig Is talked to the team in the locker room.
The players then come back out from the locker room
to say hi to their friends and family that have
(12:45):
attended the match, to go say hi to their other
friends that are there, and the players are happy to
take pictures and sign autographs after that's done, so they
won't do it before the match. That's just the thing
that I would imagine every sport does. That's just not
the time to get an autograph, unfortunately, and I know
a lot of people show up early high to get those.
But you know, at some point we got to lock
in and focus on the match, especially one of this caliber.
(13:06):
And then after the match is over, regardless of the result. Yes,
our players come back out and they're happy to do autographs, pictures,
have conversations, anything that's needed. You know, they're just as
invested in growing the game as Craig is, and I
think that they take that responsibility very seriously.
Speaker 5 (13:22):
Chris, I'll say I only have one complaint with volleyball.
All these Sunday matches has meant we can't get Molly Brunza,
Whit's back on with us, and she's.
Speaker 4 (13:30):
Been her favorite.
Speaker 5 (13:34):
This team. Yeah, so that's finally ever grant I wish,
but just keep it. She's playing so well. And like
I said, I thought she'd be a big part of
this team, and I don't know how much you thought
she would do, but she's been a much much bigger
part of this team than what I ever imagined when
she transferred here.
Speaker 3 (13:50):
Well, she's she has number one. I think that she's
and her sister. Just like her sister Maddie, who is
on our team, she's an incredible lead by example human being.
The second thing about Mollie is our floor defense with
Molly Tuzzo, to begin with, is one of the best
in the country. And then you add someone like Molli Breswitz,
(14:11):
who played libero at Marquette, which is not just some
group of five teen that happened to have a libero.
Marquette is a volleyball power in the group of five.
They are a legit team. They've hosted regionals before, they
advanced the Sweet sixteen last year, so to get her
out of the portal was a big get for us.
And I'll tell you that one of the things I
think that makes Kentucky special. And I'm sure the top
(14:32):
five teams would I'll tell you the same thing as well.
But if you come and watch one of our practices,
I mean, we have two of the best outside hitters
in the country. A lot of people say it's the
best outside hitting zero tandem in the country with Delay
and Husband, but it is hard for them to get
the ball to the floor in practice because of how
good the floor defense is on the other side of
the net and what they're facing in practice every day.
(14:53):
And that stuff is the stuff that doesn't get a
lot of credit. It's not it's not cachet. It's just
it's not appealing to the eyes and the sense that
no one looks at the box store and goes how
many digs did they have? But I'll tell you that's
been a huge reason of success for this team because
you pair that with the offense and how explosive it
can be with Brooklyn and Eva and Brooke Baltimore and
(15:16):
Lizzie Carr the net, and there's a lot of different
things that make this team dangerous going into the next
month or so.
Speaker 2 (15:24):
Well, Chris, I don't believe in lut but I'm looking
forward to watching you all at three o'clock and I
wish you all well. On today's match.
Speaker 3 (15:32):
Thanks so much, appreciate you having me on to talks
and Volleyball just can't say it enough encourage people about
This is probably going to be one of the best
home matches we have all year until the Nsiway Tournament.
So it's raining outside, there's nothing to do outside today.
Come on down, it'll be great. I promise you won't.
Speaker 4 (15:46):
If you come to.
Speaker 3 (15:47):
One, You're going to come back again. It's a great sport.
We got a great invenue experience. Thanks for having me
on and go cap.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
Thank you Chris keeping Roland. We will be back after
this year. Listening to Stockyards Bank Sunday one in sports
Stalkold News Radio six thirty.
Speaker 1 (15:59):
W This is Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk presented
by the lead Troop Barge Radio Network on six point
thirty WLAP.
Speaker 2 (16:10):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I'm Anthony
White along with Larry Vault and producer Bo Robinson. Thanks
to Chris Shows of UK Volleyball for joining us for
a little while to pump up today's show. And I
was going to say that Larry during as exciting as
our volleyball team is and if you're a UK fan,
(16:31):
just a UK fan in general. This is a sport
if you are, even if you're a best basketball fan,
because one volleyball entertainment is constant, like it is constant entertainment.
So I mean, as soon as that thing is served
is back and forth until someone actually wins the same.
But point is, uh, this is some of the most
(16:55):
one of the best teams on campus and it's been
for since Craig has been here for quite a while.
Who out, And I was gonna say before Chris even said,
it it's raining outside. There's nothing you can do. I mean,
it's it is rainy, rainy. Come on inside, enjoy all
the pink, enjoy the festivities, and just witness history because
I think we may get number two this year, Larry,
(17:15):
just because of how tough our schedule has been all
year and we're getting better every week, you know, like
we seem to just keep on churning along. I think
Craig is getting in the groove with this, with this,
with his lineups and everything. So absolutely, come out and visit.
Speaker 5 (17:31):
Like Chris said, absolutely should be a fun match. I mean,
it's one Kentucky certainly has to keep winning because Texas
is gonna keep winning, and as Chris noted, they Kentucky
plays at Texas in two weeks, I would anticipate probably
both of them will still be undefeated by then, but
(17:52):
there's other teams in the conference that can push them.
But again, ify Kentucky wants to keep that streak going
this this kind of match on today. He is one
that they've got to have. And Florida is playing better
and I kind of hadn't really thought about what Chris
Putt mentioned, but probably will be the best home match
of the season until we get maybe the NCAA tournament time.
Speaker 2 (18:12):
So Florida's just kind of spotty because I've Florida sings
will always be good at different sports, just I think
just because of the athletes that come out of the
state of Florida in general. But I haven't really heard
the name nationally like our names and you know some
of the others Nebraska, Pitt Texas, well, Florida's.
Speaker 5 (18:32):
Not at that level this year. As he said, their
best player transferred when their coach resigned and went to
Penn State, which made Penn State even better than what
it had been. Even though Kentucky still beat Penn state.
But I think it's taken Florida a little bit of
time just to kind of regroup with a new roster
and a new coach. But if you look over the
last two to three weeks, they have really played well,
(18:54):
and again they were picked to finish third in the SEC.
It did get votes to win the SEC over Kentucky
and Texas, So it's not like they're just a bunch
of slouches.
Speaker 2 (19:04):
And was that before you said that was before the
transfer or that was after the transfer? They still oh really?
Speaker 4 (19:11):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (19:12):
Yeah, seems a little bit disrespectful. Is uh is? Where's
delay at as far as national honors? Is she still
trending as possibly one of the finalists for the Player
of the Year?
Speaker 5 (19:25):
Yeah, heard Hudson both. I think maybe the difficult thing
is going to be is that they're both so good
and they both kind of alternate who leads the team
and keels and all like that, that they may end
up kind of neutralizing each other, if you know what
I mean, Because it's hard to think of both of
them being in the final four for National Player of
(19:46):
the Year, but they're both that good, so I don't
know how to'll be, but they both should definitely be
All Americas. They've been playing phenomenal.
Speaker 2 (19:53):
If you like to join the show eight five nine
to eight zero two two eight seven eight five nine
to eight zero cats, we will be after this. You're
listening to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk on news
radio six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 1 (20:05):
This is Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk, presented by
the Lead Troop Barge Radio Network on six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 2 (20:15):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I'm Anthony
White along with Larry Vault and our producer but Robinson
talking UK volleyball, basketball, football. I want to kind of
get back to football because of the conversation on Twitter
(20:35):
Acts is still based around football. Larry Vaught and got
to give I want to give our defense and our
offensive line a lot of credit and Larry Vaught, I
don't know how you feel overall about the program because
now I think the conversation on Twitter acts is that
(20:58):
I think people are coming to grips with our We're
not going to have a coaching change in the next
couple of years. But the progress was I think was comforting,
but you still cannot ignore I guess some of the
decision making, which I think more people are upset about
the decision making more than the paychecks and everything else.
Because we win games. I think people are fine with that,
and we showed a lot of progress yesterday. The problem
(21:22):
is Larry Vaught that the decisions being made. Would you
agree or not agree with this statement? The decisions are
being made. Maybe because of the heat from outside that
he stoops wants to appease. I guess the crowd, big
Blue Nation, the fans, is why he goes back and forth.
(21:44):
On a year ago against Georgia, we could be more
aggressive and try to win the game, and we don't.
A year prior to that, down in Old Miss or
at Old Miss, we're a little aggressive down the stretch
and we actually win the game. But here lately it's
been let's be conservative, let's not put ourselves in back.
But no matter what you choose, he loses because if
(22:07):
we convert, say jumps over the pile and we convert
and we hold Texas. Maybe people love the call. I
didn't like to call at all. I think there's a
lot of other options you have. You could have called
a time out. You keep going back to the we
are Will people get off his back now and say,
you know what, he's not going anywhere at least as
(22:27):
a competitive product. We're cool with it, are you are? They?
Are they still going to have their foot on it now?
Mind you, volleyball is in full swing, basketball is right
around the corners. Plenty of time to just say, you
know what, I'm gonna focus on other things.
Speaker 5 (22:42):
Yeah, I think the band the other things was a
real possibility. But I think if Kentucky had played with
this kind of intensity and playing from first game that
I think the heat wouldn't be quite as intense. But
I do think you are right about it last night.
No matter what he decides, people are not going to
be happy unless you do one thing, and that's win.
(23:02):
But when you haven't been winning, your decisions could second
guess a whole lot more, especially when it seems to
be that every decision you make turns out wrong. Maybe
your attentions are good, but I mean that's just the fact.
And I also think you're right. I believe early in
the game, if it's back at six years ago when
Kentucky's winning seven eight games a year, I don't have
(23:24):
any doubt they probably kicked that field goal on that
opening drive, don't you think instead of going forward on
fourth down? But I think, now, Mark, thank good man,
people are on me. We've got to do something. Let's
try let's try to get this, let's try to get
this going right here, I think five or six years ago,
there's not a doubt in my mind.
Speaker 6 (23:39):
He kicks the field goal.
Speaker 5 (23:39):
But that's the way he played, and that's how they
won games doing that. Maybe at that stage of the
game where it was just starting out, he didn't know
how his defense was going to hold up. But again,
three points at that stage was as good as seven
with the way the Kentucky defense was playing. And now
I did think about you. I thought about you right
there when he did that. I think, Okay, that's what
Anthony's talked about. He's got out of character. I also
(24:01):
thought about you. Was us watching that defense the whole game,
thinking this is the defense Anthony had been wanting to see.
I mean, this is the defense that was giving up
over four hundred yards a game. And Texas couldn't get
a first down, but they had two first downs the
second half.
Speaker 2 (24:15):
Yep.
Speaker 5 (24:15):
And I know arch Manning was not great by any
stretch of the imagination, but still this is an offense
that was pretty productive against South Carolina, and I mean
against Oklahoma the week before, and Oklahoma has trashed South
Carolina yesterday. So that was a really, really good defensive performance.
And I think the kind of defense you thought we
would have all year.
Speaker 2 (24:36):
And yeah, you said in March, I mean in Arch,
Manning hasn't been really I guess knockout like everybody said
he was going to be still young. But a lot
of those things, as you stated, a lot of March
or Arch's success or lack of success was due to us,
do you. I mean when we talked about soft coverage,
and we talked about our defensive back givens too much cushions,
(24:56):
how many times do we DB's right there to knock
the ball out of their hands to call I was
incompletion because they had tighter coverage and they broke on
the ball at the right time. Like everything just just
kind of fell into place. Looked a little different more
or less on the defensive side. But I love just
the progress he made on the offense. And here's the
other thing that asked me scratching my head, Larry, but
(25:16):
I've read a lot of your work, but you put
out so much work. I can keep up with as
much as I can. But you did an article last
week that talked about Mark Stoop's Mark Stuop's making comments
about the identity of the team, and I couldn't really
read what your take on it was. So you could
clarify that. And here's why I say that, Larry, at
the end of the game in overtime we call the
(25:39):
same dog on play on third and fourth down that
were both unsuccessful. And you know if you do not
convert on fourth down, they get the ball already in
field goal range. Larry, what they start the whole driving
field goal range. If you're Steve Spurry, you may kick
it on first down because if they muffed the snap,
then they can try and kick it again on second down.
(26:02):
So Steve Sburger has been known to do that. But
here's here's the point, Larry, fourth down over time, we
go for it before the end of the half, with
thirteen seconds left, what do we do, Larry Vale kick
a field goal when you still have time to meet
You have time to with thirteen seconds, I believe you
(26:25):
can run a ten second play because of it's caught.
You throw it into the end zone. It's caught, it
doesn't matter if it's incomplete. You still just set up
with that same field goal you were going to kick.
So what is your mindset? Like, what is your identity?
Is your identity that we're gonna we're gonna go for
it or you know we're gonna be aggressive, or is
your identity you know we're gonna play And I'm cool
with either one. You pick. Your team knows that. I
(26:46):
know that you know what Mike Leacher was gonna do
as offensive coordinator. You knew what how Mommy was gonna
do calling plays. You already knew, like the whole defense
already knows. You know what Lane Kiffin is going to do.
So I just kind of the article I read last week.
I'm read and trying to read between the lines or something.
Some seemed like speculation. Was he saying that the team
(27:09):
has not shown him an identity yet or the team
has established their identity? Do you think Mark stoops Fields.
Speaker 5 (27:18):
I thought when he said the identity was that they're
working hard to and all that, I thought, Man, that's
no identity something. I mean, that was just I mean,
I didn't get that at all. I mean, I would
hate to think the team is not working hard. That
really didn't jump out at me as something that ought
to be something to jump up and down and cheer about.
That's kind of what you expect, and so that I
(27:38):
didn't get what he was saying about that. And again
to do that and not even take a chance on
trying to do something there just again showed me how
conservative he he is most of the time. But two,
I kind of thought it also show well, I have
no really trying to have confidence in the offense, but
I really don't. I just think sometimes is a coach
(28:01):
you again, maybe you'll tell me I'm wrong, but sometimes
when you're playing and you're an underdog role, that's when
the coach has to be more confident than ever to
kind of show that confidence to his players. And he
did those two things. And yet you get down there
on the fourth down of the overtime when you think, okay, yeah,
I know it's only a few inches, but as you said,
if something happens, we have a bad snap, we get
(28:22):
a penalty, or anything can happen, or they make a
great play, and then all they got to do is
go to overtime. They snap it once kick the field
goal games over. Even if it is from eight inches
or a yard or whatever, you got to kick the
field goal or you've got to put points on there
to put some pressure on Texas. Now, I will give
you this anthony. If Texas had the ball first and
they kicked the field goal, and you're a half yard
(28:45):
away on fourth down and it's Kentucky and if you
get a touchdown, you win the game. If you kick
the field goal, you go to overtime. I'm all four
going for the touchdown then and try to win the game.
But in this situation, when you have the ball first,
I think you've got to kick the field goal and
put the pressure back on Tennessee Texas, especially if you're
gonna run the same play that it's been stopped the
whole game. No, I usually, how Mummy, I always have
(29:08):
a play. So I remember talking to how and he said,
you always saved one play for if there was a
crucial spot in the game and you had to pick
up some yards. You've got one play that nobody has
seen and you save it for that spot.
Speaker 2 (29:20):
Yeah, you absolutely do. And I think put like this.
As good as Rodriguez has been playing, he's athletic. I
mean all of our tight ends a cadg Our tight
ends have been doing great. Why not get the ball?
Why not get uh? And this is a play that
we ran a lot. I don't know if you really
realize this or not. We I think we ran it
against Alabama and all the big game We've ran this play.
(29:43):
And if you go back and look at the history
of Tim Couch and how Mummy's offense. The tight end
will block just so that the pressure doesn't come hot
off the edge. Cutter Bowldley starts to roll to the right.
The tight end chips the edge and then goes to
the back kind of a corner route, not really a
corner route. The running back just goes to the flat
to the pileline on the front pie line, so that
(30:03):
both there's two layers and cutter could either run if
he wants to keep running. The running back has already
running full speed towards the pieline if he if he
gets leverage on the on the backer, then you throw
it to the running back. If the corner or the
backer comes up and plays the running back, then the
tight end is opening the back of the en zone.
Like those are basic plays. But I just say we
(30:25):
get out on the perimeter, and Cutter was doing a
great job of running the ball. Like I said, do
you I'm with you on that second down play. He's
gonna he's gonna look at that play because he could
have been the hero. He could have been hoisted up
in the air and everybody will yeah, you know, he
would have been the savior. He's gonna look at that
play and think exactly what you want. I thought if
I would have kept outside because there was an offensive
lineman outside that could have blocked the guy that he
(30:47):
was scared of. Yeah, Jacker was out there, So I
think he's going to look at that and regret that.
But I'm with you, and and the caller said this earlier.
The more you talk, then the more I thought about
the decision. One, the decision is a little disrespectful to
the defense because the points you brought up. Anytime we've
been in the huddle, and most of the time with
(31:08):
Tim and how Mummy's heads together. If it's four, fourth
and three, it could be fourth and five. You get
them two in a huddle, Well, what do you think
we can get? Oh man? Tim has three or four plays,
Hal has two or three plays. He wants to call.
But on fourth and five, it's not if we're going
for it or not, it's what player are gonna call.
So us as the players, we break that huddle thinking wow,
(31:29):
yeah he believes, and it's like, that's the confidence I want.
Now when you got a offensive court or a coach saying, well,
we got to score because we don't know if our
defense can hold them. Now your defense is looking like, man,
what am I chopped? Liver? So the caller said that earlier,
But the more you talked about that decision, what does
it tell the defense, Like, even if we hold, if
(31:50):
they hold them and stop them three straight plays, Larry Vaught,
they still have the ball on the twenty five, Yeah,
that's what happened. So the point So the point was
so the point is when the callers said it earlier,
I took it with a grain of salt. But the
more we discussed it, so kind of some of the
(32:11):
things I've been saying in the past couple of weeks,
what is it like in the locker room between the coaches?
Is it like in the locker room between the coach
and the players, Because one thing I've always given Stoop's
credit for is being a player's coach to a fault.
Even if the players are taking over the locker room
slack and not do what they're supposed to be doing,
the player doesn't care because they're happy they get to
do what they want to do. The coach is just like, look,
(32:33):
I don't want these guys upset. I don't want to
transferring them. I don't want them leaving, But now it's
starting to cost you. Do you trust your players enough
to have your back and do what you need them
to do and do the right things you're supposed to
the right thing? And does the players have enough faith
in you that coach, you're going to put me in
the best position to win. What do you think that
leverage is? Before we go to break the Larry vault?
Do you think that he still has the admiration of
(32:55):
the players or do you think that's kind of been damaged.
Speaker 5 (33:01):
I would think probably a little damage. But I think
probably the players are all feeling better about themselves today,
or should be. They should be bitterly disappointed they didn't win,
but they should feel better. I think about the way
that they did play, and I would think should feel
more confident about what can happen. The next two three
to four weeks, but we got to see it Saturday.
(33:23):
I mean, I think Tennessee is a make or break game.
If they come out and play hard and play great,
but they'd lose again. Now you're two and five, then
I would worry you could lose the whole group like
what they did last year and when some of them
admitted the team just quit playing. I think this Tennessee
game is one not only they have to come out
and play hard. This is when they're going to have
to probably be able to find a way to win,
(33:45):
or they could well lose that whole locker room and
it could end up like it did last year.
Speaker 2 (33:50):
Before we go to break, Larry vaue Tennessee and at
home probably winnable Arburn at Arbur. We really don't know.
But if you look a Tennessee, Auburn, Florida than Texas Tech,
those are four games. If we play like we played
this yesterday, those are four games Larry, we could what
(34:12):
do we do we be gain any Do we regain
any respect over that? Though? Are we rally off four
of them? I would say yes, six and four s
At this point we're already Bowl eligible.
Speaker 5 (34:22):
What's that if they run those four you, I think
people would would be back thinking better or so now
he's not going to regain all the good will from
from everybody. And I'll and again when you're making the
salary he's making and he's going to have to make.
I mean, I mean, I had the people ask me,
should somebody said a coach be fired today because of
(34:45):
what happened yesterday. My first inclination was no, But then
I got to thinking, look at all these other schools.
When they don't execute it, don't do things the right way,
somebody pays the price. It might be a bad time
that they've got to make it at least East an
assistant coaching change, a coordinator change or something. I'll know
what's going on. But maybe maybe you're afraid to because
(35:07):
you finally had something that hit right on offense, and
even though you failed on the last three plays, the
rest of the game, your offense was pretty good. So
maybe you'd be afraid to pull the trigger right now
and then especially the decision what now just on the
offensive coordinator on the last three or four plays because
it was week the only mark and the offensive coordinator.
Speaker 2 (35:25):
Though because it was weak. Bush don't buy anything new
until this season is over. If you make it that long,
we'll be back after this. You're listening to Stockyards Bank
Sunday one in Sports Talk on news radio six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 1 (35:37):
This is Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk presented by
the lead Troop Barge Radio Network on six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 2 (35:48):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk on Anthony
White along with Larry Vaught. You're here to close out
this edition of Sunday Morning Sports Talks. This show has
been brought to you by Country Boy Brewing. We've had
communication issues over here and we've had people on the
phone line, so let's try to get you guys in
really quickly. I'm sorry that we missed you, but we're
(36:09):
gonna get to your lead.
Speaker 4 (36:10):
What do you do?
Speaker 6 (36:11):
I agree with you, I agree with you. I would
I think I would have bootlegged and had a pass
option with Cutter running or throwing to a tight end
and end zone. But Larry, I respect you tremendously. What
do you think is gonna happen at the end of
the season, or if you want to give an opinion,
do you think we're going to have a new coach?
Or just new coordinators or Stoops will be back.
Speaker 2 (36:33):
Thank you for the call. Lee, go ahead, Larry really quickly.
Speaker 5 (36:37):
If I had to answer today, I would say Stoops
will be back with a new offensive coordinator and some
other new offensive coaches.
Speaker 2 (36:45):
I will buy that. Let's get back to the phone lines,
and Dennis, what do you got for us? Really quickly?
Speaker 4 (36:53):
Fourth down? You got a kick a field going over time.
If you get the football first and over time, you've
got to get points. Your defense there was like to
score a touchdown against us. I mean just a game
with our defense played a butts officers. You got to
let the defense get us into a second overtime. You
got us kick the field goal fourth down. He'd been
listening to the fans too much and that's been his problem.
Speaker 2 (37:15):
What about before the half? Do you do you take
a shot at the end zone before kicking the field goal?
Speaker 4 (37:22):
Uh? They an't have no over They didn't have no
timehouse left, did they know?
Speaker 2 (37:26):
But they had thirteen seconds is enough to take a
shot in the zone from them?
Speaker 5 (37:29):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (37:31):
I was okay with that. No problem with that. I mean,
something could have as much as many problems as they've
had with time issues in the past, I've been secured
of that something would have happened and they not get
a field goal. Field go officer.
Speaker 2 (37:48):
Well, we appreciate the call, Dennis. We ain't got to,
would you say, Larry.
Speaker 5 (37:53):
That's a fair point. All the time issues in the pasty.
Speaker 2 (37:57):
And Larry, before we get off of these airways, you've
been you've been hitting all day long. I don't know what.
I don't know what you know. Uh, but you said
a couple offensive coaches. I'm not sure which offensive coach
that you're talking about. Our offensive line has gotten better
this year. Our quarterbacks have finally shown some growth. So
receiving cor I don't know. But he's only been here
(38:18):
one year, of course, so I don't know what when
you say offensive coaches, I'm not certain what you're talking about.
Gonna give us a nugget?
Speaker 6 (38:25):
Or no?
Speaker 2 (38:25):
Are you gonna take it with you? You gonna you're
gonna go home with timeouts? Or no?
Speaker 3 (38:29):
No.
Speaker 5 (38:30):
I was just totally speculating. But I think if Mark's
gonna be back, he's gonna have to make some changes
on his staff, and the defensive staff looks pretty solid
to me.
Speaker 2 (38:38):
That is Larry Vaught Thanks to Jack Pilgrim for joining
us as always, Chris Shows of UK Volleyball, Larry Vaught
as always, Boy Robinson for keeping us on air on
