Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Home of the Wildcats. Six thirty WLAP
Welcome Man Stockyards Bank, Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I'm Anthony White,
along with Larry Vaught in studio and Jack Pilgrim via
phone as usual, coming to you from Clark's Main Street
Market Studios and beautiful downtown Lexington, Kentucky. Before we get
(00:26):
this show started, Bo Robinson, I know we have people
in here learning and training and doing other things prepared
so you don't have to work every Sunday of your life.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
As Oh, I'm still going to be here most Sundays,
but a few of these Sundays coming up, I'm gonna
need all So right, well, I'm training.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
So every because I don't know how many Sundays in
twenty years I've taken off and Larry's probably done with thirty, thirty.
Speaker 4 (00:53):
Five, forty. Where you at thirty five years on this show? Oh,
I don't know if I'm twenty you were their way
long before me.
Speaker 5 (01:01):
Yeah, Sometimes those memories pop up or something that was
out on Sunday Morning Sports Talk twenty two years ago
or something like that, So I don't know, I really
lost track.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
See that's what you do when you keep on plugging away.
But Bo Robinson, what I don't lose track of is
when I come into the studio. I park right next
to you every morning, and it's just you and I
down there, and I parked in that little spot where
I guess they don't want you to park because they
put a cone in there signifying do not park here.
And I came in today, your car was not parked
where it's typically parked both, and there was plenty other
(01:34):
company around where we park and there's no other cars
over there. I was getting out of the car and
there were some people going to their car and they
kind of looked at me like, what are you doing
down here? And I'm looking at you, what are you
doing down here?
Speaker 4 (01:44):
So do you have any.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
Idea why so many cars are on this level both
and why they took your spot?
Speaker 2 (01:49):
I don't know why. I noticed that when I came
in at six o'clock this morning that there was a
lot of cars around and I park at the very
bottom you know where I park at. I do that
so you know that I'm here. Because we had that
issue not too long ago that you freaked out that
I was not in my parking spot. Why do I
park close to the door because I can somebody was
(02:10):
in my parking spot, and you're right. When we usually
come in, there's nobody parked around us.
Speaker 4 (02:15):
Right.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
In order to stay away from people, because I do
not want people to hit my car, I go around
to the other level, same level, but on the other
side and park. Now I'm away from everybody. Nobody can
park next to me. And that's why you were unable
to see my car. If I'm not in my usual spot,
then you need to look at the second spot, gotcha,
(02:39):
the other which is on the other side.
Speaker 4 (02:42):
So that big pickup isn't Gavin's, is it? No? Okay?
Cause I was going to give it a pass if
it was Gavin. It's not his, okay.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
You know how narrow those parking spots are, right right,
So you know why I have a backup parking spot
just in case away from everybody else my carty get hit.
Speaker 4 (03:01):
I got you, I got you.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
So there must be something. Larry Vaught glad to have
you in the studio. But there must be something going
on in Lexington. If unless uh Jeff Rubis is having
some kind of specialist, but this parking garage is pat.
Speaker 5 (03:15):
Well, I don't know it's one who doesn't have access
to the parking garage. He has to just hope I
park in my car. Still, everyone to come out every Sunday.
I'm not going to say anything about where I park.
Speaker 4 (03:24):
How's it going? How's your week? Man? It's been very,
very good.
Speaker 5 (03:27):
I got to go up to the ISCO Championship yesterday
louis over now right in Louisville with my grandson Kobe,
who really likes to go and take He takes some
pictures and does some things for me, and had a
really good time up there.
Speaker 4 (03:40):
Weather kind of messed them up yesterday.
Speaker 5 (03:43):
They had a delay and the second round didn't get
totally finished, so they are but it was fun. The
course there at Hurstbourne a lot different track than the
one out here at champions scores not near flow this
year at I also but got to one of the
ISSCO interns, Hannah Instley, kind of escorted Kobe and I
(04:04):
round for nine holes and had a really nice chance
to talk with her, So that was fun. Went to
see the new Superman movie with my other grandson Cooper.
That was it was magnificent, magnificent.
Speaker 4 (04:16):
Spoiled it. I got to see it. He loved it.
Speaker 5 (04:18):
And he's really into that a lot more than me.
I just enjoyed it because I understood where they were.
They didn't go in all those different portals and universes
and things so much. I didn't know what was going on.
So he said it was really, really, really good, and
you got to stay through the twenty seven minutes of credits.
I watched the one clip there at the end that'll
set you up for the rest of it.
Speaker 4 (04:37):
So that was really good. And then I cried.
Speaker 5 (04:40):
I can't remember whether it was Friday morning or Saturday
morning because of Jack Pilgrim.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
Oh, oh, Jack made me cry. Oh and you know
what you did, don't you, Jack? Yeah?
Speaker 6 (04:53):
Unfortunately, Well I cried a lot doing it too.
Speaker 4 (04:57):
So unfortunately you were doing it. Yeah, at least we
were doing at least we're doing it together. Yeah. One
of the really, one of the best pies I think
Jack has ever written. Well, you can't just leave his
hanging like that.
Speaker 5 (05:09):
Well, I'm gonna at Jack t back. I don't want
to cry again telling you about it.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
Oh well, let's get it out of the way at
the beginning of the show so that we can, you know,
have a positive morning. And I'm going to assume that
the topic was not not positive, but it was.
Speaker 4 (05:22):
Just ye, just tear jerking. That's exactly right, Jack Pilgrim,
what's up with you?
Speaker 3 (05:26):
And break down, which he did to make Larry turn
on the water works for Larry.
Speaker 6 (05:32):
It wasn't it wasn't intentional. But yeah, last week was
a tough one, kind of a bittersweet one for me.
Lost my grandmother this time last year was July eighteenth,
and you know, I was down at Peach Jam when
that happened, and it was kind of just a chaotic.
Everybody's just kind of scrambling and trying to figure it out.
(05:53):
And she had kind of a you know, one final
request before she passed, and that was to turn home
to Newfoundland where her late husband was was buried. And
I just wanted to kind of you know, didn't want
a big funeral, didn't want to be put six feet
in the ground somewhere here where it wasn't really you know,
meaningful to her.
Speaker 4 (06:14):
She wanted to you know.
Speaker 6 (06:15):
Be back with her you know, late late husband who
has been away from us since nineteen eighty. So, so
we didn't get to do a funeral, didn't I haven't
really gotten a chance to mourn her, necessarily, but we
scheduled this, this trip to Newfoundland to bring her ashes
up and spread them back where, you know, on Grandpa
(06:40):
his name Billy, My son Billy is named after him.
It was Grandpa Billy's got.
Speaker 4 (06:46):
To spread her ashes with him.
Speaker 6 (06:48):
And you know, she always wanted to love the water,
love the you know, nature and the scenery. She always
talked about how it was just the most beautiful place
on earth. So got to you know, kind of explore
there and spread her ashes where she loved the most,
and that was the water and the river and you know,
creeks and just so many different cool places up there.
So it was just a kind of a magical time.
(07:09):
Bittersweet obviously because it was for sad reasons that we
were there, but this place that just kind of was
like a living fairy tale almost the way she described it,
and just some of her happiest memories you know, over
the you know, it's kind of a traumatic time because
my grandfather died suddenly way back when they kind of
left because they felt that was the only you know,
(07:31):
they had to escape it, and it was just kind
of a traumatic thing. So it was kind of a
reunion kind of a homecoming. It was a very very
big special, sad, sad week, but man, it was this
pretty magical time to be able to spread my grandmother's
ashes back back home where she belongs.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
And before we get into sports talk, I don't know
if Larry vaugh would feel any different more at your
own rate, Larry Vatte, I was Jack Pilgrim. I was
probably three years after my dad passed, and my mom
and I were driving down the street and she said something.
We were having a conversation. She said something, and that
was the first time I had ever I'd ever had
(08:09):
water work since my dad passed. Like the whole time
I was just numb. And it was like three years later.
We were driving down the street and she was looking
at me, like, what's wrong. We had to pull over
on the side of the road. So I think you
do it at your own pace. Like, I don't think
there's any correct time to mourn or whatever. Depending on
what's going on with your life that could dictate some
of that, but you more than at your own pace,
Larry What. Yeah, I think that'd be good advice for
(08:31):
young Pilgrim.
Speaker 5 (08:32):
Absolutely, And it was just a very well written piece
and then when you know, Low and behold, I'm sitting
watching TV last night with my wife or watching Sullivan's Crossing.
You ever heard of that show? I have not Sullivan's Crossing,
and lo and behold We're sitting there in an episode
and one of the people in the movie takes.
Speaker 4 (08:48):
The ashes of his wife.
Speaker 5 (08:49):
Oh wow in Canada, goes out to the water spreads
the ashes, not thinking, oh my god, if Jack Pilgrim's
watching this, this.
Speaker 4 (08:57):
Is just like what Jack was doing. So here I
go crying again. What does the matter with you? I
said nothing.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
Ah, well, Jack Pilgrim, before I want to see what
your week has been. But over the break I did
bring a gift for Larry Vault that since we're already
on this emotional roller coaster, I got a gift that
was sent back to Larry Vault from Mother's Day that
I haven't had a chance to give him. So I'm
gonna give him that during the break. But I do
want to know that couldn't have been the the entirety
(09:28):
of your week, Jack Pilgrim, because you do a lot
of articles, and I know you've seen Kobe brad get on,
so you know there's a whole lot of basketball being
talked about now, oh yeah, And it was cool to.
Speaker 6 (09:40):
Just you know, distance myself from a lot. I was
just pretty disconnected while I was up there, but it
was pretty fun to get back and just kind of
get back in the groove of things and watch, you know,
Reed Shepherd just couldn't miss in his Summer League debut
and look way too good for that event. And you know,
Antonio Reeves is doing his thing, Chris Livingston of all people,
kind of separating himself. And you know Kobe Brea, man,
(10:03):
that's that's a uh, you know, a human flamethrower right
there doing what we got to see him do best
this this past season of Kentucky. We got to see
him do that in the Summer League. And my boy,
a Mari Williams, man, I'm telling you for for you know,
Boston Celtics, my first time getting a you know, kind
of a fan favorite. And for for so many years
I've been rooting for Duchies and Tennessee players, and I
(10:26):
feel like, you know, just not not a true Kentucky
fan by rooting for a team with so many villains
of Kentucky basketball. Feels so good to have one of
my own and and him playing so well. So yeah,
I think both of them play again, Kobe and and
a MARII Williams play later today, So very very much
(10:47):
looking forward to that.
Speaker 3 (10:48):
Who was the last UK player for you all? Was
it James Young or was there someone after that?
Speaker 6 (10:54):
James Young is the one and that one did not
not pan out unfortunately. I was rooting, I was very
excited on draft night and he never ever found his
footing and just you know, kind of one of those
early burnouts unfortunately. And you know, we've had a couple
of two way guys and some kind of you know,
Exhibit ten kind of tryout deals, you know, those those
(11:15):
sorts of things, but we just haven't had a you know,
one of the name brand you know, Rondo is the
last kind of name brandsful, Yeah, that has come through,
you know, representing Kentucky with the Boston Celtics. So fingers crossed,
and Mari Williams is that next guy, because man that
he has a huge opportunity if there was ever a
time for him to do it. It looks like Al
(11:37):
Horford is leaving to go somewhere else or retiring, and
the front court is basically wide stinking open for him.
So if there's ever a chance for a Mari to
kind of carve out a role and make the team
and you know, play pretty consistent minutes and now now
is the time for him.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
That is Jack Pilgrim. We will continue this show when
we returned. You are listening to Stockyards Banks, Son and
one of the sports stop on news radio six thirty WLP.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
This is the home of the Wildcats six thirty w LAP.
Welcome back Stockyards.
Speaker 3 (12:07):
Bank Sunday morning sports talk on Anthony White along with
Jack Pilgrim Man Larry Vault. Stockyards Bank has been your
trust to partner since nineteen hundred and four, so make
sure you head on over to syb dot com for
all your banking and financial needs. Larry Vaught, you were
talking about the ESCO out in Louisville. You want to
(12:27):
check it out. Seemed to be the I guess the
greens wearing as friendly as they over here in Lectionington
slash Harrisburg.
Speaker 5 (12:37):
Everything was pretty firm, and the greens are I think bigger,
and the area if you miss the green is a
little bit harder to get up and down, so guys
aren't Because it was funny because on Thursday morning, one
of the first guys who went out shot nine under. Wow,
I'm thinking, Wow, it's gonna take thirty under to win
this tournament, right. I think eleven under is still leading now.
(13:00):
Few of the leaders still had some host to finish today.
It looks like maybe thirteen fourteen, whereas it when it
was here at Champions it was always in twenty three,
twenty four, twenty five under. It seemed like won the tournament.
So Birdie's a little harder to come by, and Bogey's
much more frequent.
Speaker 3 (13:15):
Your boy, well, our boy, because he's more of your
boy because he's from Danville. But I met him and
I me and Josh Teter are homies. But he seemed
to struggle a little bit at I saw. I saw
an interview with him that they delayed. They the delay
was right after he had a terrible shot, so he
figured he wished to delay would have been a little
five minutes earlier so that he would have to take
(13:37):
a bad shot.
Speaker 5 (13:38):
Yeah, everybody's had some trouble with that. With the course,
it's just been it's just difficult. It's not very forgiving
if you don't if you don't hit right.
Speaker 4 (13:48):
Where you want to be. It's not a very.
Speaker 5 (13:52):
For a mistake forgiving course, so but I would encourage you,
if you get a chance, maybe even or not this
year now, change to go back to next year because
I think they're going to make even more changes and
do things. It's really a nice venue up there, and
it was a lot easier to get it out of
than what I thought it might be. And with it
being on this end of Lexington or of Louisville, makes
it not as far of a drive as what you
(14:14):
think unless there's construction on sixty four.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
There was no. And I don't know how Kobe brought
me home.
Speaker 5 (14:20):
He got on the GPS, and I don't we went
on one time. We were on a one lane road
over somewhere between Taylorsville and Shelbyville, but he got me home.
Speaker 3 (14:28):
It must have been ways because waves will get you
away from any distractions or any type of mother.
Speaker 4 (14:33):
There were an any distractions or there wasn't anything where
we were, and.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
There was no one detained or arrested or or arrest
or beat up in Louisville this time?
Speaker 4 (14:41):
Was it everything went fine there? Yes?
Speaker 3 (14:44):
Uh bow we did go to and when they had
it here. I guess I don't know. That's that part
where we've been having is that considered Lexington, that considored.
Speaker 4 (14:52):
Harrisburg, that's jess Been County count Nicholasville. We did not
get to go this year. Bo.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
I think you you played me out because you usually
set all those things up for us to participate.
Speaker 2 (15:06):
I was not planning on driving the Louisville to the
Hurstborn Country Club to sit there in the heat all
day to watch golf.
Speaker 3 (15:13):
Sorry, okay, well we'll get with Larry because Larry said
we should get out there.
Speaker 4 (15:18):
I want to go.
Speaker 2 (15:19):
I had a lot of things going on, plus the
plumbing issue from last weekend.
Speaker 4 (15:23):
You and I were talking about You did you don't
have that fixed yet? I had it fixed now, Oh okay,
I got it fixed.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
At a hefty fee, depending on what you consider hefty.
But he does have it fixed.
Speaker 4 (15:33):
Well, that was probably to fix what bo would missed up.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
Oh I messed it up, trust me.
Speaker 4 (15:38):
That's what happens to that time when we had to
do it ourself.
Speaker 2 (15:40):
Yeah, I realized what I paid this past week to
get things fixed, I could have taken that and gone
to like trade school, plumbing school for tuition money and
would have been able to figure it out on my own.
But I'm glad, I call it in reinforcements.
Speaker 3 (15:54):
I'm glad you got it fixed because that those are
not the type of problems.
Speaker 6 (15:57):
You know.
Speaker 2 (15:57):
I don't have a bathing now, I don't have to
bathe in the creek anymore.
Speaker 4 (16:01):
Or you could have just called me, you could have
came over. That's fine, way back up. So I'm good,
all right, good deal. Or I'm sure Lacy would have
took care of.
Speaker 2 (16:10):
God, she would have let me stunk. Okay, well, she
wouldn't care. She wouldn't let me just rot wiped over.
Speaker 3 (16:17):
So just so, Jack Pilgrim, we are three weeks into
UK basketball reporting. Is this the second week that they
the players have reported. It's the fourth week. Yeah, they
just wrapped up week four. We're officially at the midway point.
This is week four. I thought I thought the first
(16:37):
week was when Jasper made the USA team. I thought
that was week one that was going to the first week.
Speaker 6 (16:44):
Jasper actually arrived for the first week with moving and
then he had.
Speaker 4 (16:48):
To leave and then came back.
Speaker 6 (16:50):
Okay, yeah, so there was a week before that, and
that was three weeks ago. So yeah, we're we are
officially the NCAA allows eight total weeks of summer workouts
and then we're through four.
Speaker 3 (17:03):
And since you were not with us last week, and
we're going to have Jasper's dad on at ten thirty
when we're gonna swap you off for Dennis Johnson, which
I would hate to do. I would definitely hate to do.
We're going to miss you, uh severely, Jack Pilgrim. But
what did you take? What was your take on Jasper's
performance over on the USA team nineteen.
Speaker 6 (17:23):
You he was excellent. I really thought that he did
a lot of great things. I thought he you know,
showed off his shot making kind of the you know,
just resilience bouncing back from you know, misshots, and you
know he'd make a mistake and then make three positive
plays immediately after. I just loved his you know ability
to bounce back and kind of show that he's you
(17:45):
know who he is one of the best scorers in
high school basketball and now freshman is in college basketball.
Speaker 4 (17:52):
So yeah, I.
Speaker 6 (17:52):
Thought he looked like he belonged, I belonged amongst you know,
some of the best U nineteen players in the world.
Speaker 4 (18:00):
I thought he'd hit hit big shots.
Speaker 6 (18:02):
I liked, you know, some of the decision making, you know,
putting the ball on the floor, and you know, kind
of thriving and transitioned. It's some interesting things defensively. So yeah,
I thought he had a really really strong performance alongside
some other you know, top of the line talent. So
I think Mark Pope is in a very very happy
place where it was kind of you missed some time
(18:23):
with him going across the you know, the world and
not being able to be with the teammates and do
all that. But it's it's such a good competition and
such a big opportunity for him that I think he'd
sacrificed that week, week and a half, two weeks to
make that happen.
Speaker 3 (18:38):
We got about a minute, but we talked about this
last week and where you weren't on the show, and
we kind of My question was, because he is going
to be a true freshman and the shooting, we may
be down with shooting than we were last year from
outside the arc, and now you see what Kobe Bray
is doing on the NBA level, is Jasper going to
be able to just fill into that position where he
(18:58):
just makes the best basketball play or do you think
there's gonna be pressure on him to be the knockdown
three point shooter.
Speaker 6 (19:05):
I think there will be some pressure, but I think
he thrives under that pressure. I think Jasper is gonna
be perfect for that role. There's gonna be a million
opportunities for him to have wide open catch and shoot looks,
and it's just gonna be on Jasper to take and
make them. And I trust him and his ability to
do that. And you know, I think confidence is the
big thing. Mark Pope just instills confidence and Jasper's gonna
have it.
Speaker 4 (19:25):
That is.
Speaker 3 (19:26):
Jack Pilgrim will continue this one week return. You're listening
to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk on news Radio
six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
This is the home of the Wildcats, six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 3 (19:38):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I mean
Anthony Wide along with Larry Vaught and Jack Pilgrim. This
hour of Sunday Morning Sports Talk is brought to you
by country Boy Brewing.
Speaker 4 (19:53):
Larry Vaught. We have been talking UK basketball.
Speaker 3 (19:57):
NBA A summer league is going on right now, and
I think it's it's about time start gearing up basketball.
The basketball team is reported skinners winners are looking pretty
good looking to win the SEC. Again it sous Texas
not in the SEC.
Speaker 4 (20:10):
And volleyball, yes they are okay, but where looking where
we're favorite.
Speaker 5 (20:13):
We're just picked behind Kentucky. That took one year for
him to find out when they come to the SEC,
they wouldn't be Kentucky.
Speaker 4 (20:19):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (20:19):
So a lot of the good things are going on,
but tvt TBT well. But the biggest thing is we're
starting to pick up some steam on football. Everybody wants
to talk football. You know, a couple of months ago
we were saying there's not enough, but football talk being
probably is Larry Vauda. I don't know if all the
conversation around football is good. So I think people are
(20:41):
becoming more optimistic. I do podcasts with uh favorite, one
of our favorite guys, Van Hoyes. Van Hoyes is convinced.
He's convinced on seven or eight wins. I'm not jumping
on that. He's not tricking me this time. He's not
duping me this time.
Speaker 4 (20:57):
Say that again, might Jack and I may not have
heard that right.
Speaker 3 (21:00):
He's convinced on seven or eight wins. He's he's convinced
that we're gonna win out of the four out of
conference games. He's convinced will be the old miss again.
Speaker 4 (21:09):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (21:10):
Then I think there's a Florida Ish, South Carolina Ish,
Vandy Ish get.
Speaker 4 (21:16):
Three of those. Probably don't know that aid isn't he make.
Speaker 3 (21:21):
Maybe you know something we don't know. But the big
concern is it does the big concern I want I
want to get your take on are I think the
biggest question is always going to be on offense. Our
offense line until they show us what they can do. Uh,
it's going to be. But from what I'm hearing from
the coaching, I think they're a little bit more optimistic
(21:41):
this year than they have been in the past couple
of years, just because of the way practices are going.
They're not the defense is so much dominant, which we
had a great defense line so that you can't judge.
Speaker 4 (21:50):
But that couldn't mean what Anthony, that the defense line
is bad. I've just I mean, I'm not biting on
that one either. That's the hard thing. A better want
to gainst each other. You don't know how to interpret things.
That's what I was saying.
Speaker 3 (22:03):
I think last year and I kind of told you
this on the show. I think last year was a
little bit more fundamentally, where the defense knew that guys
the eyes weren't in the right place, so it wasn't
not the effort was not the problem. Guys knowing what
to do was a problem. So they were just getting
ran by, and that's where the defense was confusing the offense.
Now it's different if you're not putting forth to effort,
(22:23):
but the effort doesn't matter if you if your eyes
are on the right place, your hand placed me, your
first steps aren't in the right place, and that just
throws everything off. Point was I think from what I'm
hearing there a little bit more optimistic about the offensive line,
which is good. Whether our defensive line is worse, our
office line is better, our defense line won't be in
the second half of the SEC. So we were still
(22:44):
dealing with the top top six, top seven defensive line period.
No matter what happens in our office line seems be
getting better. The question on the table is it doesn't
seem like everybody's sold on our quarterback position. I don't
know exactly if fits Zach, or if it's the backups,
or if it's development, or if it's just the picking
(23:07):
up of the playbook which Bush seems to run. I
think it's not really so much basic, but everything seems
to look the same, supposed to be, so all your
your window dressing should be the same, first three steps,
everything should be pretty consistent. So it's not like John
Gruden's offense. John Gruden's offense has a lot of verbiage,
(23:27):
has a lot of movement, has a lot of everything moving.
But it seems as if the public and some of
the talking heads aren't sold in our quarterback position. I
don't know if you know otherwise, if you've heard otherwise,
And maybe that's why Van House thinks that we can
win seven or eight games.
Speaker 5 (23:45):
No, I think there's a lot of I don't know
if it's skepticism, pessimism, or lack of optimism. I don't
know which would be the best way to describe it.
Or maybe it's just wait and see. I mean, Zach
Calzado's what's twenty five years old? Almost twenty five doesn't matter.
Speaker 4 (24:02):
I just like the NFL.
Speaker 5 (24:03):
I know, but you're saying, if a guy has been
around this long, boy could be great. Look at the
experience he's got, or is he still playing college football.
So I mean there's two ways of looking at that.
I mean, we were told, you know, Cutter Bowler is
going to be the next great quarterback at Kentucky. Now
apparently it's already been decided before practice starts that he's
going to be the backup apparently. So I mean there's
(24:25):
just a lot of unknowns to me, and I've not
seen any of them work out where practices aren't open,
so we don't know. And at this time, I think
part of a lot of it stems from and maybe
Jack would disagree, but at this time of year ago,
we were told Brock Vandergriff might be the greatest quarterback
ever to play Kentucky. WHOA, No, No, I'm just saying
(24:45):
that that's what it seemed like was being said, and
that didn't exactly work out.
Speaker 4 (24:49):
So I think now you're on the.
Speaker 5 (24:52):
Real, real pessimistic that that you don't want to be
fooled again if you're a UK fan into buying in
other than now that Van Hiles is in, it makes
me still kind of wonder but I think a lot
of folks just are going to have to see it
to believe it.
Speaker 3 (25:04):
And I think Jack Pilgrim, I think what Van is
kind of saying is we beat Old Miss was our
loan sec win, but that was a pretty good Old
Miss team that we beat, And why would we take
a step backwards? So that four and eight was we know,
we played some good football against George, we played good
football against Old Miss, and then we took a step
(25:25):
backwards last year. He kind of wonder why would we
take another step back? So if we fix some of
the problems we had last year that he thinks we
can be better. But Jack Pilgrim, your assessment, what you're
hearing from you from your fan base or just your followers.
As far as this the quarterback situation, I said, I
haven't heard a whole lot of terrible things, but I
(25:45):
don't think anybody's really convinced.
Speaker 4 (25:47):
And maybe you can convince me.
Speaker 6 (25:50):
Yeah, I mean, I think we do need to factor
in that, you know, like sixty percent of the returning
production is back from a year ago. So I think
it's just hard to say, are you going to take
a you know, why would we take a step back?
You could argue, I mean it's a totally different team,
different identity, different culture to you know, I just don't
know if it's fair to use last year's results as
(26:12):
any type of indicator for what next year is going
to look like, because there is there are so many
moving parts, and I think that's part of the reason.
Speaker 4 (26:19):
Why I kind of just don't buy.
Speaker 6 (26:22):
Any of the hype right now or the you know,
the honestly skepticism on the It works both ways, you know,
I don't know how anybody can definitively say, oh, we're
gonna suck when there are you know, it's just a
different look, different type of team, different you know, type
of you know, collective talent. Maybe not as much top
in elite, you know, pro level talent, but a deeper,
(26:45):
you know, consistent, more consistent roster. Maybe that you know
that that is the difference between you know, making a
step forward.
Speaker 4 (26:52):
So I don't know.
Speaker 6 (26:53):
I kind of my expectations are low. They're not defeated.
I love the optimism and excitement and the kind of
the resurgence and the new buy in I would say
with the coaching staff and the recruiting momentum, and it
does feel like they're building this thing organically. Last year
kind of felt like they were just kind of speaking
(27:14):
this stuff into existence, knowing that you know, we're kind
of hoping for the best this year. It does kind
of feel like, hey, we're just gonna let our play
do the talking. And it does feel like that and
that excitement and resurgence is coming totally naturally, and I
think that's the way to do this. I think if
you want to get fans bought back in, it is
as Larry said, it's a show me, don't tell me.
And I think we're starting to see that with some
(27:35):
of these recruiting results and you know, some of the
things that we're seeing leading up to training campus this fall.
So I'm feeling a whole heck of a lot better
right now that I did a month ago, three months ago,
five months ago, especially seven months especially when the season ended.
But we're still definitely gonna show me, don't tell me,
tell me stay of the fan base and.
Speaker 3 (27:56):
Larry Vaught, I know, without Big Dog being the face
and the voice of the program at this point, the
questions that we have on offense, and I don't know
what type of guy Bush is. I know when we
had him on here, I love the way he spoke football.
I loved he seemed to be excited about the opportunity
when he came last year. Is this maybe probably an
(28:17):
opportunity for Bush Hampden to start selling his offense.
Speaker 4 (28:20):
Start you know how.
Speaker 3 (28:22):
Mommy when you when you were when you were reporting
with how Mommy was here. He wanted everybody to see
the greatest show on turf, like he wanted everybody to
I want everybody getting the.
Speaker 4 (28:30):
Witness of that he had open practices.
Speaker 3 (28:32):
You want our opponents to come watch that because he
knew it was exciting and people got up about it.
Although we didn't hit him practice, people question that. But
once you see Craig Yeast kill Samford, Quentin mccordy, the's
guy ripping and running the tim letting that thing loose,
everybody got excited?
Speaker 4 (28:46):
Is it?
Speaker 3 (28:47):
And I know I don't marketing department doesn't need our help,
although we do have a lot of good uh, we
do have a lot of good insight on this show
when it comes to helping the brand. I feel like
it's time for Bush to come out in some probos
or you know, especially with the question with the offensive
line in the quarterback I think the running back room
and tight ends room. Probably receivers are going to be better,
But I mean, everybody's questioning the head of the snake,
(29:09):
which is quarterback, and nobody's saying nothing. And maybe he's
the type of guy who just doesn't want that pressure
to be put on this quarterback or hisself to execute.
Speaker 5 (29:17):
Or maybe the head coach doesn't want him talking.
Speaker 4 (29:21):
Because he's that's taking sales. I know, I'm just saying it.
Speaker 5 (29:24):
I think that's been the message from Mark Stoops. We're
not saying anything now. SEC Media Days this week. Stoops
is up on Thursday, so we will see what comes
out of that. I thought it's interesting he's taking what
Alexafari Jordan loved. And who's the third and office got
to be Office Josh Katis. Okay, that's like that. That's
(29:47):
the three players he's taking. Who recruited all three of those?
Speaker 4 (29:51):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (29:51):
Take a guess, Take a guess he was a lead
recruiter at all three of us. I just found that
kind of ironic that there's gonna be three of Evins's
guys that will be at the SEC Media Days. But
I'm anxious to see kind of what comes out of there.
But I was hoping maybe ty Bryant would get a
chance to go, but I can't, you know, alex Afar,
he certainly has deserved that opportunity. But I'm anxious to
see what Mark is gonna say down there. He's gonna
(30:12):
get ask a lot of questions I think about his
offense and what's gonna go on with your quarterback and
and won this be really the first time that he's
talked about it. But I'm with you, it'd be nice
to have seen Bush at some this summer. That's where Jack,
I think Mark Pope has been brilliant with what he's
done in the last two summers of making these basketball
players too of them available every week. That's just spread
(30:33):
the message about basketball all summer football not the same.
Speaker 4 (30:38):
Jack.
Speaker 6 (30:41):
Yeah, makes my life a whole like of a lot
easier too, when we're knowing the content is gonna come
in and not having.
Speaker 4 (30:47):
To scramble every week.
Speaker 6 (30:48):
But yeah, and I think it also helps when you
know Mark Pope has a positive you know, energy and
momentum around the fan base. You know, would it be
the same if the season hadn't gone the way everybody
hoped and dreamed and kind of felt like a story
book kind of debut season, you know, had the team
been not been a success. Would they be as accessible
(31:11):
as they are right now? I don't know they we
we haven't seen Mark Pope kind of hit a rock
bottom the way Mark Mark Stoops has yet, so I
get it. I understand it's kind of different messaging different times,
and in both of their careers, with you know, Pope
on kind of his way up and Stoops feeling like
he's on the decline and kind of having to prove
(31:31):
himself that he's still got it, you know, got some
some gas left in the tank.
Speaker 4 (31:35):
So yeah, still still very much TVD.
Speaker 3 (31:38):
And Larry var Justin, I think, and I believe you
would agree with me. I think Tydd Briant is probably
a perfect spokesman for the team, but him being a
junior having an extra year if he doesn't declare eligible
for the NFL Draft this year, that Todd Bryant will
have next year another people you picked for seniors, So
I think that's probably yeah, I probably didn't.
Speaker 5 (31:57):
I just know that such a good talk and a
good representative of the program, and I've recently had a
chance to talk to him for a magazine feature that
I'm doing, and his honesty, I mean, it's pretty refreshing.
Speaker 4 (32:10):
He told me.
Speaker 5 (32:11):
Two things that really jumped out of me is that
he said, going into last year, he thought a lot
of guys just took winning for granted. They had listened
to all the things about how good they were, they
should roll out there. And he said when things started
out and they didn't go well, some guys just gave up.
Speaker 4 (32:25):
And I think if you looked at Kentucky play, I
would agree with that it did look that way.
Speaker 3 (32:30):
And you always said, are you not sure how well
our football team pandl's prosperity? So it could be the case.
So you might have been onto something a long time ago.
Let's get to the big ass fans hotline really quickly
and see what John Short has to say.
Speaker 4 (32:43):
Good morning, John Short? What do you got for us?
Speaker 7 (32:46):
You want about Americans?
Speaker 4 (32:48):
You're a great American.
Speaker 7 (32:50):
It's good that are football players going to the Hall
of Fame. That's good.
Speaker 3 (32:56):
Absolutely, It's always good to get our players in the
Hall of Fame.
Speaker 7 (33:00):
Yeah. And and the man sus to be playing this
summer with homebre players are gonna be televised like it
was last year.
Speaker 4 (33:06):
Yes, it will be.
Speaker 5 (33:06):
I'm not exactly sure what I know. The game Sunday
is supposed to be on Fox, but I'm not sure
whether there's the one Fridays on Fox Sports one.
Speaker 4 (33:14):
Do you know, Jack, I believe so.
Speaker 6 (33:17):
Yeah, I think don't know the exact schedule, but I
do believe that that will be on on national television.
Speaker 7 (33:28):
Yeah, there will be on wl APT. We'll be on
the radio team.
Speaker 4 (33:33):
That's a bold question, but I think the answer is no. Bo.
Are we covering TBT lot familiar?
Speaker 6 (33:40):
We are not.
Speaker 4 (33:41):
I didn't think so. We're not doing that.
Speaker 5 (33:43):
But they still got tickets of a little John, you
can come on dow too, Memorial Coliseum.
Speaker 4 (33:47):
You've been there before.
Speaker 7 (33:50):
Yeah, I have Mini Memorial Coliseum, I know, I know
I haven't. And then we will have fans of Line
this year. I think I still believe, and be on
the feed this year. Winning championship.
Speaker 4 (34:01):
Wow, okay you and Van House.
Speaker 7 (34:05):
Yes, and we'll be undefeated in volleyball too, talking much
about that, we'll be We almost undefeated volleyball in twenty
twenty one yearly lost one game.
Speaker 4 (34:15):
Yeah, and should have won the championship. Should have won
that one, John, I can get behind. You say undefeated
the volleyball, but that is one I can get behind.
You with.
Speaker 5 (34:24):
I tell you what, John, I'm gonna reach out to
Craig Skinner and see if we can't get him on
here with us in the next week or two.
Speaker 4 (34:28):
How about that.
Speaker 7 (34:30):
Sound good?
Speaker 4 (34:32):
All right? John?
Speaker 3 (34:32):
Sure, we have hit to break. We appreciate your call,
John Shore, but we have to get this break. We
gotta pay some bills. We'll be back after this year.
Listening to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk on news
radio six thirty WLP.
Speaker 4 (34:42):
This is the home of the Wildcats six thirty w
L a P.
Speaker 3 (34:47):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk on Anthony
White along with Larry Vaught and Jack Pilgrim talking all
things UK sports, NBA.
Speaker 4 (34:58):
I guess some.
Speaker 3 (34:59):
NFL, but right now I think the hot topic because
Mark Pope seems to have things going in the right direction,
putting together a heck of a roster. Everybody's questioning what
we were talking about before break, Jack Pilgrim our football squad,
and I didn't get your opinion, But I the more
I'm thinking about it, I've always concede to Larry when
(35:23):
he has a professional thought about how things should be operating. No,
because as a player, I would like your opinion, But
as a player, I know how I want things operate
inside the locker room, but when I'm on the outside.
So when you make the comments about should Bush hampdon
be you know, marketing his brand? Should he be letting
people know, Hey, don't worry about it, Jack Pilgrim, are
(35:45):
you more on the Larry Vault side where maybe Mark
Stoops is like, just be quiet, we don't care if
we sell tickets, winning the care everything or you are
you like me? Or would you like to hear from
Bush or Zach Well?
Speaker 5 (35:57):
I didn't say that I didn't want to hear from him.
I said, I don't think Mark's letting him talk.
Speaker 4 (36:01):
Yeah, but if my if my tails on the line,
I'm let everybody tell.
Speaker 6 (36:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (36:05):
I know I'm saying.
Speaker 3 (36:07):
If I'm Bush a coach, I gotta I gotta let
him know like it or if he doesn't see anything
good that he can he can't just keep hushed up.
But Jack Pilgrim, you you like to hear from Bush
or are you cool with from being quiet because you
don't want to bring a no heat.
Speaker 4 (36:19):
To the team. Man, I don't know.
Speaker 6 (36:23):
I think it's a I think last summer was the
exact example of why Stoops wouldn't want people talking like
last summer, he just felt like there was a new league,
a new update, a new this, and knew that every
single day and it was just building up this, you know.
Speaker 4 (36:39):
Like you, Larry, like you talked about earlier.
Speaker 6 (36:42):
Yes, the Rock vandergriff could be the best quarterback Kentucky
have seen since Tim Couch, Like that was a very
real conversation that was totally a result of the summer
whispers and rumblings and those things. And I just don't
think that that's you know, it does more than good
to say those words and build up this, you know,
(37:03):
unrealistic expectation of what the team is going to be.
Because the reason why the fall down was so you know,
damaging and harmful to the long term success and sustainability
of the program is because you know, fans went into
the year thinking that we were gonna win nine games,
and when you win four, it turns into this, Okay,
(37:23):
well what failed?
Speaker 4 (37:24):
How did we get to this point?
Speaker 6 (37:26):
How do we go from Brock Vandergriff is the greatest
quarterbacks and sliced bread to he's retiring from the sport,
you know, eight months later, like, you can't. You can't
just keep talking and building something up to be something
that it's not. You almost would rather have that quiet
confidence of, hey, we did the talking thing last summer.
(37:46):
It didn't work. I like where things think kind of
like what you heard. You know, I've heard the same things,
you know, not as in depth as you, Anthony, but yeah,
at the offensive line is a massive development. There are
some some kind of fine tuning things that there is
a lot of real progress, and you know, let that
do the talking this time.
Speaker 3 (38:05):
Yeah, we'll continue this conversation, Larry Vault, because it looks
like the running back room seems to keep shuffling this
depth chart and I don't some of this stuff just
doesn't make sense. We will continue this discussion on the
other side of the hour. You ared listening to Stockyards
Bank Sunning on his sport stalk on news radio six
thirty WLAP.
