Speaker 1 (00:01):
Good morning, gentlemen, Good morning.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
I appreciate you joined us this morning.
Speaker 3 (00:06):
I kind of I want to start off, I was
talking to coach stew yesterday yesterday afternoon, and I know
you guys are trying to get back to the culture
and the grit and the grind. Did you guys, especially
on that side of the ball, had in twenty one
and twenty two of what kind of and we were
talking about just a culture in the rooms. And the
first thing I thought of he spoke very highly of somebody.
(00:26):
I'm sure you're proud of Maxwell Harriston. Talk about Max
Harriston and possibly anything he's left in that dB room
coming into this year.
Speaker 4 (00:39):
Yeah, you know, first off, extremely proud of his hard
work and.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
What he's doing.
Speaker 4 (00:45):
Had a chance to talk to him the other day
when he was started camping Buffalo Man, just kind of
remind him of the process.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
Is they committed to it?
Speaker 4 (00:54):
And I'm really excited to see what he'll do as
a rookie and remain in his NFL career for sure.
But you know, Max wash He's very influential in that
room in terms of what we've been able to carry
on carry forward, you know, to his credit, he was
able to learn from guys in the room, you know,
(01:15):
before it became his time and Uh and he took
pride and paying that forward when when he became the guy.
And so you know, that kind of lineage you know
started you know Karents in Valentine, Keeger Smith, those guys
when I first got here, you know, passing down to
the younger, younger guys in the room on how to
be a pro, how to take care of your body,
how to prepare, how to how to come to meetings,
(01:37):
how to engage in meetings, and and so it wasn't
just in the room just coming from myself, you know,
Coach White and Coach stoupsaid was coming from the players.
And so you know, Max Uh was able to be
a beneficiary of that, and you know he took pride
and paying it forward. And so as we continue to grow, man,
we're always looking for that next generation to pay it
(01:58):
forward to those younger guys. And so that's where Yard of.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
The day and speaking that room and coming into this season,
who's the guy that you think is gonna lead this room,
gonna take over the reins of just being the face
and the voice of the defensive back rope.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
You know, we got a unique group, man. You know,
we got returning, returning starter forwards.
Speaker 4 (02:19):
JQ Hardaway, you know, did a really good job for
us last year in an elevated role. You know, it
was a primary starter along Max, and then Max went
down and we had some guys that had to step
up a little bit, maybe sooner uh than they probably imagined,
but what they did a really good job in those roles.
And so I've been excited to see kind of how
(02:41):
JQ was blown throughout the summer.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
You know, last year was a big year for him.
Speaker 4 (02:46):
You know, we talked about like the third year in
the cycle and so understanding what it takes, the process,
how to prepare those things, you know, the off season grind.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
You know, last year was a big deal for him.
Speaker 4 (02:57):
And so he carried a lot of that momentum that
he had from last year uh into this offseason. So
excited to see kind of where he'll grow. You know,
DJ Waller has continued to elevate his work ethic, you know,
his preparations, continued to grow, his maturity both on and
off the field.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
Man, So excited about you know where he is and.
Speaker 4 (03:21):
Continuing to take those steps necessary going through those fires.
Man to Ryan Nicholas had a good summer for US
man and another one that played, you know, that played
in the role last year because of injuries and and
and that role was kind of expedited and he he
didn't shy away from the moment. Tremendous upside and again
(03:42):
high football character. Man got that you know, has embraced
the process, you know, and in his learning still y'all,
you know, still still just like DJ is, still taking
their lumps at times, but but again excited about the process.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
And that's the most important piece.
Speaker 4 (03:58):
But we've got a plethora oys, man, who've really invested
in it, you know.
Speaker 1 (04:03):
And it's it's it's.
Speaker 4 (04:04):
Refreshing because those guys were able to see Max, a
lot of them, you know, and so they saw you know,
where he came in as you know, and and where
he finished as and so you know, products are hard work,
and so that's always a blessing, you know, when again
those guys are able to see it in the room
and so excited about their maturation process throughout.
Speaker 1 (04:24):
But you know, it's a long season.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
Chris, I did want to ask you you talked about,
you know, three years in the development. I do notice
watching some of the games, and last year seems I
don't know if it's mental fatigue or just the grind
of planning in the SEC. At a certain point in
the year, seemed like the team as a whole, especially
in the defense, because the expectations were so high that
we may have hit a wall. But it does I
can tell at certain times, Brad White, it's calling schemes,
(04:50):
are calling plays to protect players that may not have developed.
May you's so things don't get as exotic. Uh So
that's when you said the third year, I'm wondering, are
these guys actually picking up with you guys and Brad
White are calling Because that's one thing I praised Brad
White for doing whatever personality has on the field, he
never put them in a compromise position. But it also
makes our defense more versatile and flexible when everybody on
(05:13):
the field can do a lot of different things. But
that comes with, as you said, getting in the books
and and you know, you know, knowing, you know, being
able to do a lot of different things.
Speaker 4 (05:22):
Yeah yeah, I mean, you know, you get the nail
on the head there. I mean, the the process that
we have is one that's proven. But it's not an
overnight deal, you know what I mean, It really isn't.
It takes time, and so we try to be really strategic,
you know, and where weplace guys that Brad does a
phenomenal job of packaging guys so they can play early
(05:44):
but not putting too much on them to where they
can they can be overwhelmed and become you know, discouraged.
And so you know, there are times when guys are
in you know, new positions, may not have have have
built up the reps, confidence, whatever it may be. And
so we try to make sure we're putting the guys
around them who may have more experience things of that nature,
(06:05):
you know, to kind of supplement what they do.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
But yeah, you know, around that third time through.
Speaker 4 (06:13):
You know, that third cycle, depending on you know, the
young man, it starts to click, you know, the example
like Todd Bryant man, the guy you talk about versatile.
You know, around that third time through the system and
those guys really start to not just understand what we're
asking to do, but understand how offenses attack it, Understand
you know, what the strengths and the weaknesses are, and
(06:35):
really start to piece those things together, and it gives
us a lot more, gives Coach White a lot more
flexibility as a play caller when you got guys like
Jordan love It and Todd Bryant and you know again
JQ and those guys who've been in the system, you know,
and been through those fires together and kind of can
lean on some of those hot stove we call them
(06:56):
hot stove moment where you get burnt, you know, and
kind of reflect back. Okay, well, Coach made this call,
you know, in this setting, and you know in twenty
two and you know, I took this chance and calculated risk,
but it wasn't the right one.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
Why wasn't it? You know what I mean?
Speaker 4 (07:11):
And so understanding where some of these nuanced in defense
come from, and what we try to do is spend
a lot of time on how the offenses are are
trying to attack us, and so really understanding that I
think comes in that third cycle through and so you
kind of see a jump from guys in that in
that timeframe.
Speaker 5 (07:32):
Hey, Chris, just a couple of things. One, when you
talk about DJ Waller, is he a guy that could
be on that same path of Maxwell, that could Canada's
all of a sudden just break out and be that
big time guy. I was really intrigued with what Jordan
Levitt loved had to say about him at the SEC
media days and how much he thought he had improved
(07:52):
just over the summer.
Speaker 4 (07:53):
Even well, you know, DJ's DJ's unique man in terms of,
like it took him a while to understand, you know,
kind of our process, you know, and nothing against that.
He came from another program that had a lot of
successful we did things different, you know, and so it
took him a little bit of time. It wasn't a
seamless transition, uh to kind of understand the expectation, the
(08:17):
level of work, you know, the accountability, things of that nature.
And he slowly started to buy into that, and his
place starts to elevate, and it elevated fairly quickly, you know.
And so now it's about the consistency form building that
I don't ever want to put, you know, something on
the young man that they didn't necessarily ask for.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
So I don't know where the future holds. I know
the young man loves ball.
Speaker 4 (08:44):
He's he's been really really engaged this summer and he's seen.
Speaker 1 (08:49):
A lot of growth from that. And so I'm excited.
Speaker 4 (08:53):
He's gonna have his ups and downs like they all do.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
You know, it's a fickle position, you know what I mean,
And so.
Speaker 4 (08:59):
I'm excited about kind of where he is and his growth,
and you know, he.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
Does have big upside. I tell guys every day.
Speaker 4 (09:05):
Man potential is a dangerous word, you know, because a
lot of people have it, but a few people reach it,
you know. And so being a part of that few
that that maximizes what he can do and maximizes what his.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
Teammates can help him do.
Speaker 4 (09:19):
I think we're continuing to grow and developing that aspect.
Speaker 5 (09:23):
And I watched Martell's carter play a lot the last
couple of years. I know, he's just been with you
a few months now, but as he kind of met
the expectations you had for him to this stage, and
it's sort of change he could get on the field
this season as a true freshman.
Speaker 1 (09:42):
Mark A C. FOURD does a great job for us.
You know, I love his energy, you know, I love
his his enthusiasm as a youngster.
Speaker 4 (09:53):
You know, we we we kind of made mention.
Speaker 1 (09:55):
To it earlier in the broadcast saying that, hey, you know,
the reality of secc and it doesn't quite hit.
Speaker 4 (10:02):
You until you're in the middle of it and you're like, wow,
this is what they were talking about.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
This thing gets heavy, dought, you know.
Speaker 4 (10:09):
And so for a true freshman coming from high school, man,
that's that is a challenge, you know.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
It's the challenge of the.
Speaker 4 (10:15):
Mental grind, the physical grind, the competitive grind, not only
from my game to game, but from practice to practice,
you know. And so a lot of things go into
playing as a true freshman.
Speaker 1 (10:28):
And so c fort Man has done a great job.
I'm excited about his future. You know again, I.
Speaker 4 (10:34):
Think he has a phenomenal family structure that's going to
help him.
Speaker 1 (10:39):
He's gonna need to be able to.
Speaker 4 (10:40):
Lean on them throughout this freshman season because it is hard.
Speaker 1 (10:43):
It is hard. Freshman year is tough.
Speaker 4 (10:45):
And again and excited about where he is. He's got
a tremendous future for us as a Wildcat and you
know again, but it's about him learning just like everybody else,
on how to stay true to the process. And that process, man,
is daunting, is hard, it's uncomfortable.
Speaker 1 (11:01):
But if you can stay true to a good things happening.
Speaker 4 (11:04):
So he's been able to do that, and uh, you know,
look forward to seeing him grow throughout you know, this
freshman season where the ups and the downs are gonna come.
Speaker 5 (11:13):
And I saw that picture you posted the other night
of your group there. I guess we've all been to
eat or something like that, talk about the kind of
culmination of the summer. That's a lot of guys in
your group. I didn't realize you had quite that many.
Speaker 1 (11:27):
It's been a while. It's been a long time.
Speaker 4 (11:28):
Coming trying to work to that, you know what I mean. Uh,
you know, we we we've been really conscious. Coach Stupents,
Coach White myself is trying to be having identity right,
you know, find the right character young men football character.
Speaker 1 (11:46):
And then talent, you know, and so that fit what
we do.
Speaker 4 (11:50):
And so it's been a process getting to the point
where developing depth.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
You know, last year was really the first year felt
like we had solid, solid up through. Our feel very
similar this year, and we needed that. You know, Maxwell
went down.
Speaker 4 (12:05):
Uh, you know, fairly early in the season, and so
a lot of guys had to play, which is beneficial
for the future, is not always you know, in the moment,
you're like, man, I wish we had our top top
guys out here, but those guys grew and those those
those reps are invaluable, those experiences are invaluable, and so
(12:26):
you know, and so it helps kind of those guys understand. Okay,
it's my opportunity now, you know, I had a little
taste and now understand completely. When the coach is talking,
I'm not looking at them like he got three heads like.
Speaker 1 (12:39):
Man, coach, Okay, I get it. No I do, I
do get it. You know, I was in those fires.
Speaker 4 (12:44):
And so but we've worked hard at trying to be
intentional about building depth, you know, building the right young
men that there are again committed to growth, uh, committed
to being a better version of themselves, stay in weekend
uh and year out, you know. And so we're excited
that that.
Speaker 1 (13:03):
You know, when when you figure it out, Larry.
Speaker 4 (13:05):
Let me know on what the former is to get
it done overnight, you'll make a lot of money and.
Speaker 1 (13:10):
I'll just told sign with you brother, you know. And
so we haven't got.
Speaker 4 (13:15):
It perfect, but we're working hard at it and so
excited about the group. You know, they worked really hard,
rolled their sleeves up, put their head down, no complaints, man,
being consistent, and so excited about where we are, got
a long way to go, but excited about.
Speaker 1 (13:27):
Where we are.
Speaker 3 (13:29):
And Chris, I got one one, one last question for
my last question, and it's kind of a team question
more so defense, just because I love what you and
a Brad are doing over on defense side for the
past couple of years. And I don't want to pigeonhole
you put you in a bad position. But can the
leader of the team be on your side of the ball?
(13:50):
I mean, can it be in your room? Because it
seems like we have to be Jordan or.
Speaker 2 (13:55):
Or tie.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
But you know, Alex is taking a lot of snaps.
I'm here and War's telling me that lot of good
things about Gusta. Uh, but I haven't seen when times
get tough for you all. I haven't seen it on
the field. And you can see like the body language
of somebody that can you know, grab a face mask,
get everybody going hone, everybody back in. Can that person?
Can that person be in your room? Or can you
(14:17):
pinpoint somebody that I could expect to do that?
Speaker 1 (14:22):
Uh? You know, I think, uh, I think every year
is different in that regard. You know, they said last
year we.
Speaker 4 (14:27):
Didn't kind of have that in years past. We have
and so you know, I think we can develop that.
I think guys have shown traits, you know, I think.
Speaker 1 (14:37):
That the biggest piece of.
Speaker 4 (14:39):
It is those guys finding their voice at the right time,
you know. And so we've been really intentional, really intentional,
uh you know this off season about you know, the
player development, the leadership development, you know, as a holistic
you know, organization and as well as positions, and so
(15:01):
you know, we've we've done something expanding some things to
help kind of guys find those voices sooner, you know.
Speaker 1 (15:08):
But but there.
Speaker 4 (15:09):
There are a few guys man that that that have
that ability to do that.
Speaker 1 (15:16):
Again, it's it's it's much easier.
Speaker 4 (15:19):
Right when it happens organically, and sometimes you know, just
the way things are, man, it doesn't take hold the
way you wanted to.
Speaker 1 (15:29):
Every team is different in that regard. But I feel
like we've kind.
Speaker 4 (15:32):
Of built towards helping that and pushing that to the
forefront to where it happens organically. But it's also being
kind of uh, you know, expedited, you know, for lack
of better word, because teams change so drastically year to
year now, and so that's something throughout the all season
that that we've been intentional about, you know, and going
(15:55):
it in small groups and then growing into an overall picture.
Speaker 1 (15:58):
And so I do think think.
Speaker 4 (16:00):
We have some guys you know, who have that ability
on the defensive side of the ball. I do think
we've had some guys who who have that ability from
from how much they've played and how much they sacrificed
and how much they've grown that had that had on.
Speaker 1 (16:15):
The defensive side of the ball to have that ability.
Speaker 4 (16:18):
But at the end of the day, man, it's not
coach driven, you know, it's player driven. And so helping
those guys find their voice, you know, helping them navigate how.
Speaker 1 (16:27):
To do it, that's our job.
Speaker 4 (16:29):
And you know, we spent a lot of time in
this off season, you know, excited about kind of those
guys that have been in the system and third cycle through,
you know, and and and those guys really taking hold
to that and understanding leaderships.
Speaker 1 (16:44):
Not perfect, you know, I think.
Speaker 4 (16:45):
A lot of guys you know, in this day and age,
shot away from it a little bit because they feel
like they've got to be you know, uh perfect, you know,
and there was only one man that walked the earth
that was perfect, and none of us.
Speaker 1 (17:00):
Or him, you know what I mean, Our good lord
Lord Sabe. He's probably on the way to church myself.
Speaker 4 (17:05):
So getting those guys to understand like leadership is not perfect,
you know.
Speaker 1 (17:09):
It's a it's it's a it's a deal that we
continue to chase it, but we'll never strive, we'll never
get we'll never achieve it, but we strive to get
to it, you know. And so I think we do
have it.
Speaker 4 (17:20):
Answer questions, but now it's about putting that action into
putting that plan in the action.
Speaker 3 (17:26):
Excuse me, well, coach, we appreciate you for joining us
this morning.
Speaker 5 (17:30):
Man.
Speaker 3 (17:30):
Let you get to the big house, man, and we
wish you all the best next year and hope we
could turn this thing back around.
Speaker 1 (17:38):
Oh we're excited, man, excited for the challenge.
Speaker 4 (17:40):
I appreciate you guys having me on and have a
blessed Sunday.
Speaker 1 (17:43):
Enjoy the rest of the day.
Speaker 3 (17:44):
Boss, I appreciate you. That is Coach Chris Collins. We
will be back after this year. Are listening to Stockyards
Bank Sunday morning sports talk on news radio six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 6 (17:53):
This is the home of the Wildcats, six thirty w
l A P.
Speaker 3 (17:58):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank one in Sports Talk on Anthony
White along with Larry Vaught. Thanks to coach Collins was
joining us. We went over quite a bit. He was
giving our good information. Larry Vaught, we were going to
open the phone lines back up. I know a couple
of people called before. We got Chris on. After the break,
so you can join us eight five nine to eight
zero two to eight seven eight five nine to eight
(18:20):
zero caps. We're gonna talk a little with a lot
more UK football after having Chris on, we still got
to talk about the profit sharing. And let's say we
got an assistant offensive line coach, like there's been some
help on the offensive line, and Larry Vaught doesn't has
not told us yet, but he thinks that we may
have gotten better at the quarterback position, so why not
(18:41):
have a better season four and eight. We will continue
this conversation on the other side of the break. You
listen to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk on news
Radio six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 6 (18:50):
This is the home of the Wildcats six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 3 (18:55):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk on Anthony
White as long.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
With Larry Vaught.
Speaker 3 (19:02):
This our Sunday Morning Sports Talks has brought to you
by Country Boy Brewing Larry Vaught. The big Ass Fans
Hotline never fails. It is lit up. You like if
you would like to get on the big Ass Fans
Hotline eight five nine to eight zero two to eight
seven eight five nine to eight zero cat. So let's
rush on over there and see what Alvin has to say.
(19:23):
Good morning, Alvin, what do you got for us?
Speaker 1 (19:27):
Good morning?
Speaker 2 (19:28):
Good morning?
Speaker 7 (19:31):
How y'all doing today?
Speaker 2 (19:33):
Doing good?
Speaker 1 (19:34):
What do you got for us?
Speaker 7 (19:37):
You know, we had five men basketball coaches to win
national championships.
Speaker 1 (19:44):
I don't remember too much.
Speaker 3 (19:51):
We may have lost, Alvin. Well, we'll album. We cannot
hear you. We drop your call. If you want to
call back, you can call back Larry Vaught. And in the meanwhile,
good stuff with Chris Collins before we got back to
Chris Collins or get back to that or talking some football.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
Apparently, if you cook.
Speaker 3 (20:13):
Like groundhog or some of that stuff, Larry Vaught, it
smells like roasted beef. So whatever you did with that, uh,
that animal, you probably if you can go find it,
if you can get it back, then you probably can
have yourself.
Speaker 5 (20:29):
Some no, no, we don't want that animal.
Speaker 3 (20:33):
Back, no soil. So Phil Roberts is making this stuff up.
Speaker 5 (20:38):
No, I don't know if he's making up. I just
don't want that groundhog back anywhere near my house. I
don't want him back, don't want it back here, don't
want to invite his friends or anything like that. I'm
very content.
Speaker 1 (20:48):
I don't.
Speaker 5 (20:49):
I don't doubt what Peel put on social media there,
but I'm good with him being gone wherever he is now.
Speaker 3 (20:55):
Well do you so? Larry, Larry vaugh Martin. Lawrence taught
us what I subscribe to. If you cook that bad boy,
put it on the grill. If you take it out back,
put it on the grill. One of those little things
to spin around, you.
Speaker 1 (21:07):
Put them on there.
Speaker 3 (21:08):
Yeah, you put them on there. Listen, follow me, Larry
for a second. You do that, and that smell will
tell his cousins and his family members that dang, and
they will not come. That smell will make them stay
away because they know what's going to happen to him.
So you kind of got to leave a just kind
of like UK football. You go fourign eight and all
of a sudden we're four and eight team, no matter
(21:29):
what's happened in the past twelve years. But that's kind of
the thing, Larry Well.
Speaker 5 (21:35):
They it may make them this attack because they're mad
at me for anybody like that. So I'm good at
where he's living out in the woods.
Speaker 3 (21:46):
Let's get back to the phone lines and see if
we got Alvin back. Alvin, I think we got you
back what he got for his album.
Speaker 7 (21:53):
Yes, sir, I started talking about the basketball program and
beside me and to war national championships.
Speaker 1 (22:03):
So I'll just take it up with Joe Hall.
Speaker 7 (22:06):
Coach Hall wanted and of course in nineteen seventy eight,
and I think that that team was predicted to win it.
They had a team that featured two twin tiles. They
really don't get talked about much, Mike Phillips and Rick Roby.
And then we know about what coach Rick Patino done
winning a national championship in nineteen ninety ninety six. Coach
(22:31):
w Smith had an underdog team that went into that
tournament and wanted in nineteen ninety eight, and then John
Caliperry wanted in twenty twelve. So we always we do
talk about the good things that Kentucky basketball done with
those five men. But I also wanted to ask you
guys a question about the two men that sort of
(22:52):
put us in dark times with the program. That's Coach
Addy Sutton with the with the scandal, the emery package
that mysteriously opened up it went to Chris Mills father.
Then we had some cheating with some of the guys
that had their gretes cheated on.
Speaker 1 (23:14):
They had.
Speaker 7 (23:14):
We had a shine Kill incident.
Speaker 1 (23:16):
Where he stole a jewelry.
Speaker 7 (23:18):
It was just a mess under Eddie Sutton. But I
don't know if that. Of course, Billy Gillespie wasn't on probation,
I didn't have those type of incidents, but yet seemingly
he ran the program into dark times too. SoC was
talk a little bit about those two guys and how
they really fractured the program. I didn't have to be
(23:40):
brought up out of the out of the darkness once
by Rick Patino and then by John Caliperry. You talk
about how Bill Gillespie and Coach Sutton really kind of
messed the program up, and we somehow got ourselves back
together with two coaches that brought championship.
Speaker 3 (24:01):
Thank you for the call, Alvin Larry Vault. This is
gonna be a first for me because I really like Alvin.
I met Alvin before, really good guy. I don't want
to entertain that conversation because one, I don't know anything
about Eddie Sutton, and I'm sure you can.
Speaker 2 (24:17):
I know a little bit about Belly G.
Speaker 3 (24:19):
But this show, this ain't I don't think this is
the right show to talk about dark times and you know,
bashing our program as far as some of the or
re rekindling something.
Speaker 2 (24:33):
But I will.
Speaker 3 (24:33):
I will entertain the whole idea of the transition from
Sutton to Patino and Billy G to Cali Perry. Do
you think those were You have any comments on that
because you know more about the Eddie Sutton to Patino,
But I don't want to, Like I said, I don't
want to discuss it in detail as to have any
(24:55):
feelings because I don't have any feelings. But I don't
think people are tuned in to really listen to it
us rekindle those moments.
Speaker 5 (25:04):
I'll just say it was amazing what both Rick Patino
and John Caliperry did to rejuvenate the program, even more
so with Rick than with John, I think because it
was at the rock bottom when Rick took over. It
wasn't quite that low when when John came in and
(25:24):
like say, and he didn't deal with probation or anything
like that. So but I think what they both did
was pretty amazing.
Speaker 3 (25:31):
I agree with them that Eddie. They weren't under Eddie Sudden.
It wasn't like death penalty type thing like that was it.
It wasn't like they were going to get rid of
the the program. I thought there was at some point
they were talking about giving us, talking about shutting the
(25:52):
whole program down. But that didn't happen in Eddie Sutton, right,
or it may have never happened. I might have made
that up.
Speaker 5 (25:58):
There was just speculation about that. But Rick, this had
to deal with two years of probation, okay, and.
Speaker 2 (26:04):
That was before I got there, before I got to Kentucky.
Speaker 5 (26:08):
I'm assuming, Yeah, that's when you're just still a child.
Speaker 3 (26:11):
Okay, all right, Well, Alvin, I apologize to you because
I really like you. I don't think that's the topic that.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
That our fans really want to hear.
Speaker 3 (26:21):
And I don't know if Larry and I would want
to engage in in that conversation. But they did both
do the Patino and Calibrarey did a remarkable job of
restoring the programs, so I think it does need to
be acknowledged. But let's get to the big ass phone
lines again and see what Dennis has to say. Good
morn than Dennis, what do you got for us?
Speaker 2 (26:40):
My man?
Speaker 8 (26:42):
Well, I'm not going to talk about UK basketball. To
be honest with you, I'm kind of overhearing about it.
Speaker 3 (26:47):
They said seventy five percent for football or Dennis, they said,
they're speculating seventy five percent. They're saying seventy five percent
spread for football because I know where you're going and
I'm and I'm with you, but we've been on there
past couple of weeks and they're speculating. Larry vaught doesn't
know and I don't know, but they're speculating the profit
sharing to go seventy five percentaur of football.
Speaker 2 (27:07):
That's speculation that if that's the case.
Speaker 8 (27:10):
If that's the case, then I support that and uh,
but of course, what's the percentage going for the rest
of the SEC football teams?
Speaker 2 (27:19):
I have no idea. Larry Vaughd is.
Speaker 8 (27:23):
Saying, because because this is a people want to talk about, Well,
we've got to compete with Duke and them, And I'm sorry,
we're in the SCC. This is football league. You can,
you can, you can talk about your basketball you want to,
but this is a football conference. And if you're going
to compete, you've got to least be you've got to
least put the same number in as rest of the
(27:44):
SEC football teams. I give you that, so you know,
you know, and UK mhm, this country is a football country.
I'm sorry, I'm sorry UK basketball fans, but it's the truth.
College football, the NFL and college football are the teams.
(28:10):
There's more. Why do you think there's so much more, meaning,
so many more college football schools out there than there
is basketball schools. They're only a handful of basketball schools
out there. The rest of the country is football. If you're
going to compete with the big dogs, you got you get,
you know.
Speaker 3 (28:28):
But anyway, Dennis, let me ask you this, and Larry
Vaught brought this to my attention. I think is a
great point because when we once we conclude this call,
we're going to continue to discuss this topic. But Larry
Vaught said, and you said, if it's seventy five percent,
that's fine, which is fifteen point three million out of
the twenty point five million that would that's what it
(28:49):
would be. But Larry Vaught brought to my attention that
if Mark Stoops isn't complaining, then it's probably a healthier
You're saying, you don't know what the rest of the
SEC is doing. But if Mark Stoops isn't complaining, doesn't
that make you comfortable that he's he's because before when
the money or when the basketball and the football had problems,
Mark Steus spoke up about it, so he didn't think
(29:10):
he had got enough of the split. Mark Steuts would
probably make some ruffles.
Speaker 8 (29:16):
Well, I would hope they did make some. He would
make some noise about it. And that's really what I
kind of got. It was wanting to get into here
is Mark Steus because you know, for what he's done
this football program and the way that I mean you
go on social media, it's absolutely cancer and poison towards
that coach up there and after one losing record, after
(29:38):
you know, go to a street bows and after one
losing record, they want to run the guy town. You
know what, I'll be honest with you, if somehow I
know that this football team was to surprise people and
win a or nine football games, and if he was
to leave to go somewhere else, UK football fans would
get what they deserve. The UK fans would get what
(30:00):
they deserve.
Speaker 1 (30:01):
And I would not.
Speaker 8 (30:02):
Blame Mark Steps at all for leaving this football program,
but the way the fans have treated him the fast.
Speaker 3 (30:08):
Year, Dennis, do you think there's more of you? Do
you think there's more of the people who support it?
I know Larry Varr right now ain't being very positive
on the program, But do you think there's more or
they just louder the negative? I honestly I have. I have,
I have went back and forth on what you're saying.
But I do think there's a small amount of the
fan base loud the small amount of the fan base
(30:29):
who are extremely negative. I think most of the fan
base wants what's best for Mark step saying the program.
Speaker 8 (30:36):
Exactly, how can you not be a true UK fan
and not roots that guy to be to succeed? Now,
I'm not gonna I'm not gonna lie and tell you
guys that I'm not being in them stands after a game.
And I have not told a fit and say that's
my last time being there. You know, I'm not gonna
say that because you know, I've been frustrated. Uh, but
you know, if I'm gonna support the team and hopefully
(31:02):
they can can surprise people and so you know, you
get on, you get on social media and it's just
just it's just absolutely cancer and poison. I can't believe
this that they're being able to recruit as good as
they're being able to recruit right now.
Speaker 3 (31:19):
Well, Dennis, we appreciate Carl. I agree with you, Larry Vach. Uh,
you know, based off what Dennis is saying, you know,
there's a lot going on with the program, and uh,
it's I guess we get calls every week that people
wanting to start looking past Mark stoops. Do you do
you find that fair? Because I do think some people
(31:42):
feel like the uh over the experiment, the experience or
the experiment is over. But I mean we've been in
uncharted territories. If you do go another direction from Mark,
who's to say we're going to be somewhere different that
we haven't been in Howard in years UK football has
been around.
Speaker 5 (32:04):
Yeah, that's the risk of the unknown. You never you
never know for sure. So hopefully things let us go
as well as you're anticipating this year and will be
kind of a moot point when the season ends.
Speaker 3 (32:16):
I don't anticipate them going well. I just don't anticipate
them going just as bad as you act like you Actually,
we can't do no better.
Speaker 5 (32:23):
I'm not saying. I'm saying I don't really know what
to expect. What I keep saying because I haven't seen
anything out there. I'm telling you, let me watch two
weeks and then I'll tell you what I think I expect.
Speaker 3 (32:33):
Oh, here's two questions, and I'm going to break well,
two questions in one line. Do you expect the offensive
line in the quarterback room to be worse? No, exactly,
exactly so.
Speaker 5 (32:50):
But again, I'm also not convinced that everything was as
bad in the offensive line. It's what we all project.
I think there were just a lot of things that
went wrong last year other than just offensive line.
Speaker 2 (33:04):
That is Larry Vat. We will continue this show once
we come back from this break.
Speaker 3 (33:08):
You're listening Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk on news

Speaker 6 (33:13):
This is the home of the Wildcats, six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 3 (33:17):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. On Anthony
White along with Larry Vapp. Stockyards Bank has been your
trusted partner since nineteen hundred and four, So head on
over to syb dot com for oh your banking and
your financial needs. Let's get to the big ass fans
hotline Larry Vaught and see what Mike has to say.
Good morning, Mike, help me out, Larry, help out me
(33:40):
and negative Larry.
Speaker 9 (33:42):
Good morning, gentlemen. I hope you're having a wonderful day
and I am calling to help you out.
Speaker 2 (33:46):
Thank you.
Speaker 9 (33:47):
So I'm reminded by the last almost two hours of
conversation around the UK football about a quote from Abraham
Lincoln who said a man is only as happy as
he makes his mind up to be, and it reminds
me of every single fan base in the nation, and
especially the Kentucky fan base. We suffered from recency bias,
(34:10):
and we went four and a last year, and everybody
thinks all the ship is thinking we need to get
rid of our coach, and they forget that we went
to eighth straight Bowl games. Now, I'm old enough to
remember what it was like back in the seventies and eighties,
when it was tough and we celebrated going to one
bowl game in four years if we were lucky, and
(34:32):
go many years where we would only win two games.
So I'm a little bit coming from a little bit
different perspective, but I will say this, a lot of
the issues that the last year's team suffered from was
the six inches between the years and a little piece
in between the rib cage of heart and dedication and
(34:56):
the old saying of ninety nine problems and you ain't one.
We've got fifty new football players with fifty brand new attitudes,
and it's up to this coaching staff to set the
expectations and to make sure that everybody has a proper attitude.
And you look at who they brought in to replace
a lot of those bad attitudes that are playing for
(35:19):
LSU and Nebraska and all these other schools that we
don't have to deal with anymore.
Speaker 1 (35:25):
They're gone.
Speaker 9 (35:26):
And we brought in people who were all conference players
at smaller schools. Okay, I'll give you an example. Hevin
Wibberley center for Western Kentucky, started all fourteen games last year,
did not give up a sack in fourteen games, and
he's not even going to be good enough to start
(35:48):
on this offensive line. And you look at Seth mcgallan.
He was a four star running back who signed with Oklahoma, Okay,
and that's a football school, and he transferred around, had
some problems, and he's coming here with a new attitude
and a chip on the shoulder and something to prove.
Same thing with Kyle Zada, he's got a chip on
(36:09):
the shoulder with something to prove. All these guys are
coming from smaller schools with lots of experience, and they
got something to prove, and they have a much different
attitude that existed on last year's team. And I'm not
saying attitude is everything, but that's the starting point. If
you don't have the right attitude, it doesn't matter how
(36:30):
much talent that you have. And I just encourage Kentucky
fans to hang in for at least the first half
of the season and shut up with the negativity because
that negativity breeds negativity. If you think all this year
is going to suck and everything's going to be bad,
(36:50):
you're probably that's going to rub off in the stands,
and when it gets to the end of the third
quarter in the beginning of the fourth quarter, everybody's going
to expect us to lose a defeat from the jaws
of victory like it used to be many years ago. Okay,
but that's not like that anymore, and Student's proved that
with eight straight bowl games. Be patient, Let's see what happens,
(37:16):
and I can test that. We're not gonna learn what's
gonna happen at the first game against Toledo or the
second game against the old mess at home, or the
third game against the Eastern Mission. We're gonna learn what
this football team is made up when they go on
the road and play South Carolina. I'll get off, I'll
let you guys talk about it, and we'll talk to
(37:37):
you later. Have a great Sunday.
Speaker 3 (37:39):
Thank you for the call, Larry Vaught. We will discuss
that after we come back at the top of the hour.
But we have Kevin Cook coming on and talking about
Memorial Coliseum seventy five years as monument, stage and arena.
We will talk about that when we come back. You're
