(00:01):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning SportsTalk. I'm Anthony White along with ward
winning journalist Larry Vaud NFL Draft pickyou the former UK defensive backstandout Van House,
coming to you from Clark's Main StreetMarket Studios and beautiful downtown Lex to
Kentucky. I will say this, and Van probably has not been here.
(00:28):
Larry Vaught has been here. Weyou typically recording this studio, it's just
me and a producer, or LarryValk comes in and is Larry Vault and
the producer. Or it's me andJack and the producer. There are people
in this studio. I didn't knowpeople even worked here. I hear I
(00:49):
hear voices of the fair gender outsideof the door talking. So I told
Billy, I said, Billy,I've never had anybody else in the studio
while we recording. I like tosay what I want to on the breaks,
He said, they can't hear you. But if I'm going to get
a snack and I want to yellout something that I'm not appreciating a call
or something a caller, or ifI'm mad at Jack, then I typically
(01:11):
say it. But there are people, Larry Vaughan there are people in this
building of the of the fair Sex. Wow. Yeah, that's never happened
when I've been there, unless itwas a special guest we had in like
when we did yeah yeah a fewweeks ago, And that's why I spared
to segue in. Then in acouple of weeks, we're going to have
him a grown or bevan from thevolleyball team, and we're gonna let them
educate you a little bit more onvolleyball and hopefully you'll be a little bit
(01:34):
better prepared for him. I wantto intimidate you so much this time you
can kind of stand up and holdyour own. You won't let her just
kind of, you know, dominate, and you'd be afraid to talk back
to her. I didn't want to. I ain't want to scare her,
Larry, I don't have a middlesection, I mean the owner off like
I either let you have it.I can be a heck of a follower.
(01:55):
I can be a heck of aleader. Me as a leader is
completely different than me as a follower. Give me the game plan, I'm
gonna carry it out. Me asa leader, do exactly what I say,
and only would I say, Well, what we will do in a
couple of weeks when they're in there, Eleanor and I'll sit on one side
over on the other side. Thatway, if you all get into it,
(02:15):
you know, get going. Ijust kind of sit there and smile
on life and what's what's going on. The phone lines are lit up if
you want to get on eight fivenine to eight zero two two eight seven
eight five nine two eight zero cats. Uh, I did not realize,
well Bow is out everybody so BoRobinson is out. He's taking a week
in for himself, he says,Feller's trip. I don't know what that
(02:36):
means. Hopefully Larry Will will justpoking pride him as he's done with me
for out back Bowl stories for years. Maybe we can find out what he's
doing. I think I've got someinformation on both, on both we're gonna
save that. We're gonna save thatfor the last second unless it's unless it's
pertinent. Now, no, it'snot. It's not Perton that he's not
(02:58):
he's not out, can't down thebaseball park or anything like that. No,
all right, so we yeah,we'll bring that in the last segment
once we're done with J. J. Weaver. But uh so we had
Billy Rutlis sitting in and Billy Reutlichhas been taking care of baseball, and
if you don't follow KSR, he'san integral part of KSR. Not like
working with Billy. I don't thinkhe quite understands me, but he does
(03:19):
a great job with me. Alot of people get a little shot and
shivered, but Billy always takes careof your boy. Billy, what is
your take on this baseball history?Well, I appreciate you gassing me up,
Anthony, and I also told youto make sure you keep the curse
words to a minimum if you leavethe studios with these with these all these
(03:40):
females around. But I've I've lovedwatching these cats. I loved how good
the pitching's been. After that firstregional game where they gave their up eight
zero and then the other team cameall the way back, and you know,
you got to give it up forBoozer, because I mean, was
it like the bases loaded in thefifth inning and they got out of that
(04:00):
jam unscratched. And I mean OregonState only had one hit yesterdays. That's
pretty incredible. So if that pitchingcan keep up like that, then I
mean, sky's the limit. Man, they got a really good shot to
go to Omaha. I just, you know, staying up for this nine
pm game. I don't know ifI'm gonna be able to do that with
a morning show the next day.How old are you, Billy twenty nine?
Oh, you got plenty of hoursto stay up, man, Larry
(04:21):
Vaughden, Billy, Billy? Whatdid I tell you before we got on
the elevator to come up here? What did I tell you? I don't
know what you said. This isthe first show in my entire career that
I'm fully slept. Oh yeah, that's right. I've gotten well rested.
I've gotten about ten hours of sleep. Man, I got some real good
(04:41):
sleep. Drink water, worked inthe yard, got a whole lot of
water. So we appreciate Billy. So Bow's not in Billy, Redtlis does
this thing part of KSR crew. We're all family here on WLAP. Let's
get to the phone lines because thephone lines have been active. We appreciate
you for holding Alvin, good morningalbum. What do you got for us?
Are you over at KPP? No? I'm not how you doing today?
(05:04):
Man, I'm well arrested. Hopefullyyou can hear it in my voice,
but I kid you are very energetic, But I did want to entertain
you guys on the thought regarding KaitlinClark, who has come into the w
NBA probably is one of the brighteststars drafted from college and has driven controversial
(05:30):
conversation on every podcast in national sportsstudios, and was off the US Olympic
team that women made up of thew NBA, which I think that she
should have been on that particular teamas well. I disagreed in nineteen ninety
(05:53):
two when Christian Lightner was put onthat particular dream team and Sequille O'Neil was
left out, I thought to Shackmaybe should have been on her as well.
So just my question is this,Has there ever been a player in
w NBA on any way you canthink of, has drawn so much controversy,
(06:16):
has drawn so much attraction, andhas drawn so much distraction to where
the levels of criticism the level ofenthusiasm has targeted one individual. Thank you,
and I hang up. Thank youfor the call, Alvin. I'm
(06:38):
Larry Vaught. You can take arest, write you a story in these
next three minutes, because I knowyou will. This is a van this
is a van topic because I wouldsay, I'll say Lisa Leslie came in
with a lot of fan fair.I don't know how the sport was it,
but I also thought Britney Grinder alsocame in with a whole lot of
scrutiny because of some genetic features andthings of that sort. I'm gonna say
(07:00):
this Van, and I'm gonna letyou have the floor to answer alvins questions.
Caitlyn Clark and I've listened on ESPNthe other day and I completely agreed,
and I was I was a bigShack fan. I was a Chris
Jackson fan. I was an LSUfan when when Shaq and Chris Jackson,
those guys came out. So whenShaq didn't get get the nod and Christian
Laytner didn't, now mind you all, was you on a V fan?
(07:24):
So nobody like Christian Laytner anyway,So that was just that. But Kaitlyn
Clark, I'm not sure if shefits the if you look at what they
need, she's a great scorer, she's a little fraid. Uh. They
want to go win. They wantto go win the gold medal. So
I'm not sure if you say we'rejust gonna take her because her popularity.
(07:44):
No, at the end of theday, you don't want to have eye
to me. I don't think youjust want to have a popular team.
I think you want people that aregonna be physical, that can play that
brand because international brand basketball, theydon't blow the whistle all that much,
and Caitlyn liked to play from faraway from the basket. There's even scrutiny
from the way she's treated in theWNBA. So you take her across seas
where they don't care what they doto you. I'm not sure how she's
(08:07):
going to react, so they preferso. I can see why people will
question it. But all the femalethe retired Hall of Famers and all the
women on ESPN now are saying thatthey see exactly why she didn't She wasn't
nominated, and maybe when she putssome size on or understands the game a
little better from a physical physicality standpoint, the next go around may be your
(08:30):
opportunity. But go ahead, andif you recollect what Alvin was asking about
the popularity of some players and theimpact, Yeah, I mean there have
been many popular players. It's therecency bias, right, because it's the
twenty twenty four version. She's agreat player, man. But as I
(08:50):
have said on the locker Wednesdays, not him Eastern Standard time, all social
media platforms a locker four on one. As I said on that right,
is that it is very difficult forthese college players to end the season right,
which is in April half. Thenext week they get drafted. The
(09:13):
next week, they're going to campfor two weeks, then they're in another
season. This is a long yearfor her. Honestly, it's better that
she's not on the team so shecan finally get a little break or rest.
She hasn't rested since last summer,so honestly, I think it's best.
The other thing is she's not oneof the top twelve players on in
the WNBA in professional basketball in America, she's not. The other thing is
(09:37):
that a lot of people are showingme that they don't that they have not
been watching women's basketball, which tome is one of the best things that
happened this year. Is any publicityis good publicity. All the talking heads
or talking about women's basketball, Idon't care if it's positive negative, but
I want people to harken back totwenty sixteen because I saw this lady play
(10:01):
high school basketball when I was inChicago quite a few times. Candice Parker
was a multiple time WNBA MVP anddidn't make the twenty sixteen Olympics team.
No woman's up and arms about that. It's kind of weird that now,
all of a sudden, that thisone individual have brought out so much in
(10:22):
everyone, and there's been a historyof things that have happened in women's basketball
that a lot of people are justforgetting about. This will pass, But
honestly, she hasn't earned the rightto be on this team. The only
person that to me should be upsetis a Rique for Dallas Wing. She's
a second league scorer in the WNBA. She's not on the team other than
(10:43):
her. I don't think there's anyquestion of that this team is the best
team that we can offer for ourcountry, period. Larry Vaut, I'm
not sure if you have any insideron the WNBA thoughts that he had,
or Cavin Clark not making the team, or anybody that you could recall that
may have made a bigger impact inthe WNBA before Caven Clark. Now,
(11:09):
I think you could if you wantedto argue either way, you probably could.
Putting Caitlyn Clark on the team certainlywould put a spotlight on the Olympics.
But if she one of the twelvebest right now, probably not,
because she'd be one of the twelvebest in four years hopefully so. And
I think what Van pointed out therethat probably for her sake, I mean,
(11:33):
she's gonna get a lot of attentionbecause she didn't make the team,
but it has been a rough,a long year because she's been in the
spotlight every day, it seems likeso in the long run, probably not
being on the team would be betterfor her physically, emotionally and everything like
that. But I gotta admit Iwould have kind of liked to have seen
her on the team. I wouldtoo, but I would also like a
(11:54):
gold medal, and that is LarryVault. Yeah, yeah, we will
be back after this. You're listeningto Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk on
New Radio six thirty WLP. Welcomeback Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk.
I am Anthony White along with LarryVaught and Van House Stockyards Bank. It's
(12:18):
just trusted partners since nineteen oh four. Head on over to syb dot com
for all your banking and financial needs. I'm getting better the older I get.
I can type, do an introand add and get up the next
subject. All I thought I wasI thought I was left brain most of
(12:39):
my life, but apparently I'm bothbrained. At the same time, we're
gonna switch over to football because wehave Isaac Souls coming on at the next
break and Van House. I kindof want to get you your take right
now on where we stand in classof twenty twenty five. I'm sure you
(13:00):
stay up on it. You know, We've got Quinn Simmons, Martell's Carter
who we've had on here. MarquiseDavis had his coach on here, Stonton
Saunders who's been committed for quite awhile. Tucker Caddis. If the last
name sounds familiar, that's because heis the little brother of our Catus and
Brennan Ward. And so we're goingto have Isaac on to talk about his
(13:22):
son's commitment or he's not his commitment, his son's recruiting process right now,
and everything his son his dad playedin Indiana. He is a little bit
before me. I think the lasttime I played Indiana was ninety eight or
ninety nine. He and he startedin two thousand and two, so we
don't have any overlap on that.So you know, we're talking about quite
(13:43):
a few things. He played inthe NFL. He played up in Cleveland.
But his son is a is anoffensive line and a great catch and
I would like to see him inthe blue. But that's something that we're
not allowed to talk about because weare not part of the recruiting team,
so we're not recruiting him. Weare just interviewed. But where do we
standing right now in the recruiting forUK football? What are you for twenty
(14:05):
twenty five? Oh? Hold on, let me say this as well.
I'm sorry I keep cutting you off. This reminds me of our podcast.
Uh Tavanni Mozelle. Larry Vaught ison campus. He is on campus.
He got here this week. He'sready to row. I mean, his
only disappointment about being on campus probablylimit his ability to be on with us
now. But he's excited. He'shere. Go ahead, Van House before
(14:31):
we talk about souls. Yeah,I personally think that we are doing really
well in this class. Obviously, for I think this class is going to
be important for us to get helpon the old line. As I've said
again on the locker, I'm notI'm not going to repeat what I said
(14:52):
now Wednesdays, but we have beensuffering with the recruiting of oldlignment, and
I think this class is a chancefor us to try to re up the
young guys on the old line. You can always go into portal, but
the old line is probably one ofthe toughest position to grab a quality guy
(15:13):
in a portal because if you're agood old line and uses, a team
that you're on probably wants you.So this year we have that twenty twenty
five season, class's gonna have tobe very very stout on Old Line,
and as usual, Man Big Doghas to do his thing in the state
of Kentucky and bring home the besttalent that we have in the state.
(15:35):
And obviously one of the best guysis Isaac. So hopefully we can get
Ali Soil on this team in twentytwenty five, and hopefully y'all can can
sprinkle some magic dust on his dadthat can get into his son's ear and
say yes, you're coming to UK. What I really like about Isaac's so
old Senior is he's just like therest of us. He's a proud dad.
(15:58):
Maybe he'll hill he doesn't mind goingon social media and point out that
he thinks his son will be thenumber one rated player in the class in
Kentucky. But he does it ina very respectful way. He doesn't knock
anybody else or something. He justa proud dad just backing up what he
thinks about his son with some prettygood football knowledge. Is Anthony introduced him
there, so I think you guysare really going to enjoy talking to him.
(16:22):
He's a police officer in Louisville andalso the offensive line coach where his
son plays, so he's just areally good guy. I think y'all are
really going to enjoy listening to himtalk about his about his son and his
recruitment. And I know Van Ihave talked about this on the locker and
before we get into the discussion orbefore we you know, go to break
(16:44):
and get in the discussion of VanHouse, are you do you feel the
same way I do about these starrankings because a lot of times Larry Vault
lines up the top players in thestate, and there's some there's some dogs
like I just because you're from Kentucky, doesn't mean you can't play because the
level of competition wasn't We got aroster full of Douglas players, who are
you know, performing in the SECweekend and week out without a problem.
(17:06):
But when I look at some playersand I'm like, man, this dude
can play football. And because heplayed in the state of Kentucky, he's
a four star. And I can'tremember what the number you pointed out,
but there might have been less thanmaybe ten five stars in the state.
It might have been less than eight, well not five stars. There's probably
I think there's fifteen guys in thestate that's ranked to have stars next to
(17:32):
their name at all. At all. I think there's I think there's two
or three four stars. Okay,so that I knew. Okay, So
my whole whatever it was, wascrazy. Do you think that there's a
is that fair? Is that somethingthat or is that something that needs to
be tweaked Because there are some guyswho may play in Florida, Texas,
(17:57):
Georgia, and you may play youmay have eleven hundred yard seasons or nine
hundred yard seasons, thousand yard seasons, which in high school is not a
lot, because that doesn't make youa lead a thousand yard season. But
if you were playing against the topconce top talent every week, then your
thousand yards may be tougher than someonewho's playing in the lower level Texas.
(18:21):
You know, does that do youthink that need to be rethought or do
you I don't think the Stars matterme personally, but does that whole idea
need to be rethought? This personhas this many stars and that makes them
qualify for this Well, yay andnay. Here's the thing. This is
my issue with the stars is usuallythese guys have to attend these camps to
(18:44):
really get their star right now,Yeah, you know what I'm saying.
So what if I'm a kid whoseparents can't afford going through these camps,
or what if I'm a kid who'srunning summer track. What if I'm a
kid who's doing another sport in thesummer and I just can't attend all these
camps. So to me, itis a little I mean, I mean,
it's not like it's not accurate mostof the time, but it's a
little disingenuous. Sometimes there's still thingthat fans need to understand. Is there
(19:10):
in any rankings. Right, there'sa high level and there's a low level.
Sometimes there's a guy who is twoor one points away from being a
four store. There's a three star. There's a guy who's barely a four
store, but he just barely gotto the whatever that eighty some number rating
that they required. So sometimes there'sa three store that's just as good as
(19:30):
that four store because they're right justa day apart, like December thirty first
and January first, that's how closethey are. So sometimes we get a
little bit flooded by these stories. But also look at how high of a
star rating they are because some ofthese three stores they just go to extra
camp, you know, so youget to a four store because there's eyes
(19:51):
on them. Well, we're goingto break. When we come back,
we will have Isaac so Old Seniorto talk about his son, Isaac Sol's
Junior and his recruiting process. We'llbe back after this. Stockyards Bank Sunday
Morning Sports Talk News Radio six thirtyw a B. Welcome back Stockyards Bank
Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I amAnthony White along with Larry Vaught and Van
(20:17):
Hoiles. This our Sunday Morning Sportstalks about you by Country Boy Brewing.
We're proud now to be joined byIsaac Solds senior, father of Isaac Soulds
Junior. Good morning, coach, can you hear me, coach? Yes,
(20:37):
sir, I was a good goodmorning. Yes, I am glad
to have you. Man. Mailis a most I don't have a lot
of friends from Louisville, but mostof my friends from Louisville either went to
Central or mail you. Okay,so listen, let's get right to it.
Man. How's the process been withyou on the young Spike? Oh
man, it's been great, youknow, just seeing him, you know,
(21:00):
going, you know, going tothese universities we went. You know,
he's going the officials the UK.He's actually meant with too wolf for
right now. So I'm out herewith you guys. But you know,
just to join the process for him. Happy for him. Uh, you
know, like I said, justgoing through it. Uh. He was
quitted way way more schools than Iwere when I came out of school.
So uh, just proud as adad, you know, watch him go
(21:22):
through the process. Has he been, you say, been recruited by more
schools that you played in Cleveland?I don't know if we're gonna have enough
time. I'm from Cleveland. Iwanted to ask you about your experience up
there, but you said he's beenrecruited. Is that in part because of
everything you've been through and you knowthe gates you got the keys to certain
gates to open up for him,or you just or has it just been
(21:45):
his natural talent? It's been honestlyhis. I mean you, I mean,
I really don't know to say,oh, that's so saying, No,
I so dream. I mean whenit came when it comes to recruiting
and things like that, Uh,if you want to say Twitter x Uh,
it's a very powerful tool. Likehe started varsity as a sophomore and
had some really good feelm uh,and you know we broke it down,
(22:07):
you know, you do highlights andthings and whatnot, and uh, you
know he put him on the nextI mean he basically you know, broadcasted
himself, showcased himself and uh,you know, I mean from there it
has been great. Like we didlittle small camps kind of like Kentucky,
like the prep Red Zone, butuh, he went to the camp up
in Indiana and you know he kindof did real well and then uh we
(22:32):
did the He won the MVP atthe under Armer camp at Atlanta last year,
and it kind of like just tookoff from there, you know,
to see, you know, kindof showed what he could do, especially
you know, uh been going downSouth and you know, like, man,
I can you know compete with theseguys, you know, so you
know, Uh, then you know, he went to the summer camps.
(22:53):
Uh, came to UK, Wewent to a whole lot of camps.
Uh. That's the story for anotherday. But I took him to twelve
camps in fifteen days. Wow,that's a lot. But I've always said
this, I would never put myson through that again. But I'll never
apologize for the outcome because you know, he got a lot of offers and
(23:17):
things going to those camps. Sobecause I got a question, Coase,
I have a question for you, since you are coaching your son, when
was the when was the moment thatyou realized that for you coaching him,
that's like, oh right, hefinally figured it out. He finally picked
(23:40):
up what I've been laying down forhim, and he has a chance to
be a successful office alignment on thenext level. Well, he's always kind
of you know, he's always kindof had that mindset. It's so funny.
When I played with the Cleveland Browns, he would, you know,
I mean even when he was likea year or two, one or two
years old, we had of course, you know office like you have a
(24:04):
sled, I kid you not.You know, he would go watch practice
or whatever. Of course he couldn'tgo out there on the field when practice
was going on, but when practicewas over. You see how all the
you know, uh Coach Cornell, who was the head coach at the time,
was real big on family, youknow, after days of training camp,
you know, the family would comeafter practice and I kid you not,
and he would go over there atone or two years old and actually
(24:26):
go hit the sled. The onlykid that would do it. And my
mom actually recorded that. You probablygot it around somewhere because my mom she
don't never throw She saves everything, she never throws anything away. But she
I remember she recorded it and sheshowed me. I was like worst fight.
He's like he's over there hitting thesled, and like I said,
I mean, you know, hecouldn't do nothing to be in one or
two years old, but you know, actually hitting the sled He started playing
(24:49):
football when he was five years old. Of course, you know, he
didn't get to play at that fiveyears old or anything. But you know
how some kids have that that attentionsman go play in the dirt. Little
kids fight, and he always stoodby me, like daddy when I'm gonna
go in. He was never thatone to you know, stop playing,
spike or whatever the case may be. He's always been the tent of the
(25:10):
football. He's always loved the game. I realized too when he got a
little bit older too. He wouldgo watch you know, I started teaching
him, you know, understanding defenseand kind of watching film when he was
in middle school, and I kindof groomed him from the center position and
that's pretty much where he plays, except he played right some right tackle last
year because we needed them out there. But he was always attention to detail.
(25:33):
He was always willing to learn, you know, what can he do
to get better? And not likeI tell people all the time, like
the coaches and things like that mightdo. He is a film junkie.
He loves watching film. One morestory and then I'll let you get to
your next question. But like Isaid, he's always kind of been their
mentally his sophomore year that make itto the state championship game. I wasn't
coaching at the time, so I'mjust going back being a father. We
(25:55):
go to the movies and we watchBlack Panther two. So Male's playing going
to Bullety Center State championship game andhe sent right next to me in the
reclib reclining, and as he's reclining, he's got the phone up to his
face. So I kind of hithim on the Im'm like, Spike,
man, were watching the movie. You know, Black Panther two. That's
a good movie. Like Spike watchedthe movie? Man, why are you
quit playing on your phone? Sohe reclined the chair back up, and
(26:18):
about ten minutes later he would leanback and I'm sitting there looking Spike quit
playing, you know, like, dude, watch the movie. Then he
re climbed back up. He kindof give me that side. I looked,
and about another ten or fifteen minuteshe will reclimb back. I said,
man, what the hell is this? I mean, I don't know
if I'm supposed to get you not. He is watching the Bullet East film,
(26:40):
Oh wow, he said, AndI said he's I said I said,
Spike, why did you watch yourfilm? We going to the movie.
He's like, Dad, I don'twant bullet he said, I want
to study all they tendency and hesaid, I don't want to. I
don't want noble defense avelignment to oneup me, which means he wants to
be better prepared than the defender he'sgoing against on the bullety's defense. And
I'm like, he's fourteen fifty yearsold doing this. I'm like, dude,
(27:00):
he's got it. He's got it, because you know, football is
more is just as much mental asit is physical. And you know,
not too many fourteen year olds andthings watch film like that. But I'm
like, yeah, he gets it. He gets it. Now, that's
not too many eighteen eighty twenty oneyear olds, you do. Yeah.
(27:21):
Kind of going back on that,I kind of knew, like me,
I would say maybe, like justfrom the mental standpoint, like he's going
to be a good alignment because likeI said, what he's wanted to do
for the game mentally as much asphysical. I'll probably say maybe, like
when he was in middle school,so maybe like eleven twelve. Wow,
Okay, So I said, youguys have been, You've been to South
(27:44):
Carolina, you've been to North CarolinaState, you're at Kentucky. So when
you get this young man, likeyou've got the soul detailed focus. What
kind of things is he asking coachesright now when he's on his trips or
do you do the talking, youdo the asking. No, I'll let
I only ask answer questions if I'masked a lot of the things that you
(28:04):
know he'll ask me, you know, like, you know, what is
this coach real? Or you know, is he kind of blowing smoke up?
Is behind? You know? Thingslike that. And I'm like,
you know, coaches try to doeverything they can do to kind of,
you know obviously, you know, kind of sell themselves as a program of
things like that. You know, that comes part of the job. So
I'm like, man, he justgotta for like fill in his heart.
(28:25):
I'm like, I never I'm notthe one to add, like I said,
to take over a conversation, belike, hey, let me handle
this, because at the end ofthe day, all I could do is
advise because he's gonna have to bethe one to make that decision, and
when he makes that decision, hasto live with it as a father.
I will not like for him togo through the transport portal. I'm not
gonna lie to you. I wouldlike for him to go to the school
(28:45):
history of choice, you know,go there and get a degree. And
that's why we're going down on thesevisits, to be honest with you,
because I know my son. Ijust think Spike just wants to make that
decision with no regrets and be like, Okay, this is the place I
need to be. And I thinkhe can live with that because he's kind
of OCD in that kind of regard. He just don't want to be like
(29:06):
I wish I would have done this. Like if he takes the OV there
and it's up there, he's like, okay, but at least I went.
Spice's kind of like that kind ofkid coach out. But I do.
I do feel like he's got aschool of two up there were breaking
those and Dad, we're breaking newsout here. I'm not yet. I
(29:27):
can't do that. I just talkingto him and sayings like that. I
think I think I believe where there'sfive that he has, but I think
it might be two, maybe three. I don't think it's five. But
like I said, I just thinkit's in the mindset of if I do
like these five schools, even thoughI do like one more than the other.
(29:48):
But just like making decision with noregrets and coaches sounds like you putting
You said all the right things asa coach, Dad, all those things.
Here's one thing that I only seehow you're gonna escape this. Your
son plays center and tackle. Centersusually also play guard because there used to
being in the mix. You gothelp on the inside. So for your
(30:11):
to go from and that just speaksto his his detail and just his his
kids football like you. But Idon't know if that's something as a kid
that he says, well, hey, coach, I can play center and
I can play tackle, or youas a former NFL player saying a kid,
I think you can do it.So I'm gonna say, you know,
a Weasley a way out of this. Well when I talked, when
(30:34):
we started talking about defense, likeI wanted him to learn the office and
his skage from the inside out.OK. I never with kids, you
never know how tall hardit they're gonnabe. However, though I do understand
miserables even though Spike is about sixto one and a half six foot two.
I mean, however you want toslice it. But there's two qualities
(30:55):
that he does have that may bein triggered. Now. Is the college
or they look at him more asa center guard. However, though Spike
has an eighty three and a halfeighty four inch wingspan, almost eleven inch
hands, you don't see those. You don't see those measurables as somebody who's
six foot one or two, thosethose that wing span and those hands in
(31:17):
his side seventeen feet you would sitthere if you never looked at Fike and
he had those manageables, you wouldprobably say he's six foot four to six
seven, you know. But hegets an honest because I have eleven inch
hands with thirty four inch thirty fourinch on my worst size eighteen foot,
So he gets it honest, youknow. But I'm right about I'm right,
I'm right at six four? Ismama short? I'm sorry? So
(31:45):
do you think so he's preparing morefor interior just because I guess that's where
he's at now, or is itmore that he's anticipating that growth and that
parameters don't help him as well? But I always think if I always feel
like if if there. The moreit's all you always hear that, the
(32:07):
more you can do. And Itried to teach him that early. So
when I so when I used toteach him about, you know, offenses
and defenses, but especially on theoffensive end, is understanding the concept of
every position and not just one,so you know what everybody's doing instead of
you said, because growing up,I was always taught to play kid,
you not just one position. Versatilityreally wasn't priest until I really got to
(32:30):
the NFL because when I went tocollege, I played four years but started
free so I played some guard myred shirt freshman year in Indiana, and
then our left tackle graduated and thenI had played left tackle, so I
only really had to learn one position. But I tried to say, okay,
it's kind of like if you gofrom the left guard to right guard,
(32:52):
usually the concept is not different. But I was so focused on in
one position. I'm kind of like, if I'm a I'm like, you
know, but you know, tofreak out. But I learned from some
of those things that I really couldhave sat back and really started to play,
but can say, okay, ifI'm not a starter, I can
learn this position because like I said, you know, you're really one player
(33:13):
away from you know, getting injured. Then it's the next guy up.
And it's better if if the officeline coach can say, oh he could
play a center, guard or tackle, right than oh he could just play
center. So now you're stuck becausenow you know, they may say,
well, this guard lows center andguard, and he's most likely to get
in because he's more mentally, youknow, more mentally focused on playing you
(33:36):
know, more than one position. So there's there's more positional value there because
he knows more than one position. So I just tried to, you know,
try to help him out, youknow, explaining those concepts and you
know, and like I said, you know, playing more than one position,
and you know, if he canplay at a high level, you're
more likely to play somebody that justplays one position, you know. So
(33:57):
so I as, how, howwhat is been about Kentucky that has intrigued
you and hopefully maybe is intrigued yourson to Has there been anything that's kind
of jumped out as different about Kentuckythan anybody else. One thing that I've
always appreciated about Kentucky was always CoachMorrow. Coach Morrow has always been,
(34:19):
you know, great communication with Spikefrom the beginning. I won't go into
a role, but there was aformer position coach who didn't value Spike as
much as we would have liked.Even though I'll say this, Wolford being
here definitely helps the situation. I'llsay that, okay, well, if
(34:40):
you can take it how you wantit, you know, and believing it
or not. You know, Ihave you know, I have friends in
you know those circles too, that'sin the coaching profession. And I have
not heard one thing bad about, you know, coach Wolford. You know,
everybody says, man, he's oneof the best coaching in college football.
(35:04):
And to me that that's huge forme that, you know, I
can go around, I could talkto this coach of that coach and say
what you think about coach ed Wolf, he's one of the best. So
as much as they do homework onmy son, I do homework on the
coaching staff as well. Hey,coach I did. This is kind of
my last question. It's really notabout your son. It's kind of about
(35:27):
the University of Indiana, where wegot a lot we've had a lot of
success against. Did they ever didthey ever change that football feel where it
looked like carpet, like Berber carpet. Oh yeah, they when they got
rid of the show. What theydid was it was my senior year,
my last year IU was at twothousand and five, and there were there
was talks of doing the construction atthe north end zone, which is now
(35:50):
more complete. So when they finishedthat, they also with that northen zone.
They also added the weight room aswell, which looks really nice.
Uh, but it was. It'sbeen the turf, Phil turf ever since
then. I know they've redone it, I think once or twice since I
almost graduated almost twenty years ago fromMan. I think I think it's just
(36:12):
like the second I think they didthe turf. I think they kept it
for like maybe ten maybe a littlebit longer than that, but I know
they just recently redone it. Butit's been Phil Hurst. Hey, coach,
what what's the deal with the nicknameSpike? Well, how do y'all
come up with Spike as his nickname? My mother gave him that nickname.
My mom went to the first ultrasound, and of course we want to know
(36:38):
what the sex was, and obviouslyyou know he was a boy. So
in my family, my grandfather who'spassed on, gave me the name.
Everybody called me Big Ike and thenlike my mom, I kid you not.
We sitting there looking at the ultrasoundand she said, Spike. I
mean it just came out, youknow, but it's actually but it's actually
an acronym. The sp actually hadthe way she worths its small person,
(37:00):
like a like man. We're notcalling him man, he's I'm like a
doll. But it just stuck withhim. And since he was born,
it's been spiked like nobody's it's it'sword. If somebody talks to him,
you know, talk to him, they call him Isaac because everybody, his
(37:21):
teachers, Coach Wolf and Mail, you know, everybody calls him Spike.
So you know, yeah, well, Coach I we appreciate you joint us
this morning. I know you're busy. Man, Thanks Big Dog for getting
this some time for to allow youto be on a recruiting visit and still
talk to us. We we appreciatethat. Man. We hope all the
(37:42):
best with with Junior's decision where hewants to go. Oh yeah, it
will uh we have to decide atthe time of the day, but he
will commit Thursday, July eighteenth. All Right, you sound like you know,
we're not gonna badge you any Ithink, I said, I have
so so before I let you go, this is this is kind of what
(38:02):
we're kind of gonna do. Sohe's gonna take his official visits during the
dad pread, which is always thelast week in June, first week in
July, since my since my youngestalso played sports too, you know,
during that two week dead pread,we always go on to vacation. So
we're going on an eight day cruise. So I told him, I was
(38:25):
like, you know, kind oflet you know, kind of let you
mari nature brain. You can prettymuch do your own thing, you know,
think about the process and all ofthe things. So but I told
him, I said, I willnot bring up footballer any questions unless you
bring him up to me. Youknow, go on this cruise and have
a good time to try not youknow, to think about it. But
when we come back to Louisville,you know, we'll we'll we'll ask a
(38:47):
lot of the questions if he don't, you know, if we don't talk
about it on the cruise, youknow, just to talk through it.
And you know, see where hisbrain is at, see where his heart
is and go from her. Allright, coach, we appreciate you for
that with reach. If you joinus this morning, we will be back
after this. This is Stockyards BankSunday Morning Sports Talk on news radio six
