(00:00):
This is the home of the Wildcats. Six thirty WLAP Welcome in Stockyards Bank,
Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I amAnthony White, joined by as usual
Jack Pilgrim and Larry Vaught. Comingto you from Clark's Main Street Market Studios
and beautiful downtown Lexic, Kentucky. We have an action packed show for you.
(00:22):
But first I would like to startthe show off saying Happy Father's Day
to you both. Bo, youdon't get any kudos for obvious reasons,
but I also wanted to give shoutouts to the former host of this show,
Curtis Birch, who has a coupleof little ones running around now,
and my man Mark Berger. Butgood morning, Jack Pilgrim. Hout is
(00:46):
the fifth for your first Father's Day. What do you expect? What's the
expectation now that you are a fatherand they may just get you tools or
something to do work around the houseor start to show you appreciation. Man,
It's it really is just the coolestthing waking up this morning and you
know, having a little man comeand kind of waking me up in bed,
(01:07):
and I just these days kind ofmean a little bit more, and
not just the holiday, but justevery single day, just get getting you
know, learning new things and seeinghim kind of develop a little personality.
It's just the coolest thing in theworld. So yeah, man, I'm
I'm just just the lucky, luckiestdad in the world to be able to
celebrate my first first Father's Day withthe little one. So, you know,
(01:30):
it's been a hectic several months.Got a little health scare, got
our first little beach vacation, andyou know, got to soak in the
sun and make some life memories alittle bit. So yeah, yeah,
man, life is very very goodover here in the talk about so and
that's why you were off last weekbecause you were vacation, in first family
vacation since the little man is comingto your life. How did that go?
(01:53):
Man? It's uh, it's morestressful and chaotic than you think it
is. You know, you youdon't really account for the sand and the
the making sure he's always in theshade and okay, well, you know,
not too much sun, not toomuch water, not too much this
is he cranky? Is he?How does he like the heat? Like
all of those little questions that younever had to even consider, uh previous
(02:20):
beach vacations where you could just goand soak up the sun and you know,
lay out, read a book andenjoy a you know, an umbrella
drink the entire time. You justdon't even think twice about it. So,
uh, you add so much moreonto your mental load. That kind
of takes away from the relaxing part. But you also get to, you
know, experience the beach for thefirst time with them and create those cool,
you know, lifelong memories. Soit's it's a it's different. It's
(02:44):
not that it's better or worse. It's just different, and it's pretty pretty
darn awesome. Larry Vaught, theveteran of the crew. Uh, you've
been doing it so long and yourkids are your your your son is father,
so maybe it's turned from you gettingFather's Day until you just just enjoying
time with the wife and doing theson duties. Or is this still Father's
(03:07):
Day gifts and things for the misterVault Now, I don't think it's probably
gifts and things anymore when you getto be a certain age. But it's
always kind of a bittersweet day becausemy dad's been gone twenty seven years now,
and that's just seems kind of mindboggling, and I really hate that
(03:28):
he never got to see my grandchildrenor any of them have a chance to
do things. You never really gotto see my son play in high school
sports or anything. But very fortunateto have two kids. Now I got
four grandkids. And started Father's Dayweekend early yesterday, went over you would
like this, Anthony went over towatch my youngest grandson play some seven on
(03:49):
seven at the UK camp, watchedhim to score, to watch him score
two touchdowns, take one blatant cheapshot to the head, and responded the
way that I would like that.He did, got up a little shook,
but pod and I like that becausethat's that's what you got to do.
That's what I told him. Youwant me the last time he gets
(04:10):
a cheap shot to go play football. So that was kind of an early
start to Father's Day. And thenlet me give just a quick shout out
to the Chick fil A on HarrisburgRoad, not the one closest to town,
but the one on out on HarrisburgRoad. Because I was starting home
yesterday, I decided to stop andget a little snack. And when I
did, I want to get backin my vehicle and pulled out and it
ran about ten feet stopped in themiddle of the parking lot and that was
(04:33):
it. And I had to folksthere to help me push it into a
parking spot. Called and got atow truck and took, you know,
a couple hours, which is understandablefor it to get there with the folks
inside. Chick fil A were greatto me. Took the food that I
had originally ordered to eat and itgot pretty cold. I was dealing with
some things, and gave me newfood and checked on me constantly and looked
(04:55):
after me, and it was Ireally appreciate that. He should have called
me. Man, that's right nowon the street from coach too. Man,
he would have came and checked onyou. I'm sure you got plenty
of connections. Man. Is itthe vehicle going to the graveyard or is
it just need a couple of repairshere and there. I hope we'll just
need a couple of repairs. We'llfind out Monday morning. Got it towed
back to the Bob Island dealership here, so we'll find out Monday morning what's
(05:18):
going on with it. And Larry, if you could help me out,
because I don't want That's why Idon't like naming names, because I don't
want to leave anybody out. LelandConway was actually my first host of this
show when I was working. Idon't know if he has kids, though,
I'm not certain if he has kids, so I'll just put it this
way, not that I know of. Uh oh, well, Leland,
I'm gonna leave you out on thisone, but I appreciate it working with
(05:40):
you as well. We haven't anaction packed show lined up for you.
We got coach Keith Madison, hallof Fame coach, former UK coach most
winning his baseball coach, coming onto talk about the run that the Cats
are on right now. As ofthe walk off last night, I Will
was multitasking, so don't have alot of great detail, but we are
(06:04):
still rocking and rolling. I believeLarry Vall we're gonna see Texas A and
M because the page shows it iseither Florida or Texas A and M in
Texas and then wound up winning threeto two. Right, Well, I'm
gonna take your word for that becausethe game started at what eleven fifteen our
time? I forgot and I forgotto check today says they don't play again
(06:26):
until Monday. But I don't know, but it was that tornado or hurricane
weather or whatever, the tornado warningor whatever they had. I couldn't stay
after watch that game. So thatwas a four hour I figured to be.
There was a four hour rain delayyesterday last night into this morning.
Oh wow, and that game didn'twrap up till about two fifteen Eastern time.
(06:49):
That is crazy. So I gaveup. There was no reason for
me to torture myself at one o'clockwatching that game. So I can understand
why people are awaking up under notknowing. Hey, who's Kentucky going to
play Monday night at seven o'clock.Yeah. My photographer Vicky Grass said the
actually were under a tornado warning forpart of that time. See he's safety
(07:12):
first. But what I saw whenI recapped this morning was a Texas A
and M three to two over Florida. So it's going to be Texas Monday
seven our Eastern Standard time, sevenEastern Standard time. That's what'll be Texas
A and M versus our Cats andthat. So we'll have Keith on at
nine thirty. We will talk women'sbasketball, Dommi Parova. We will talk
(07:39):
about her ten thirty transfer six oneguard and we will have our defensive coordinator
Brad White on our football defensive coordinatorbecause now basketball have those things as well.
Brad White on at eleven thirty totalk UK football what our defense is
going to look like, which Ithink is going to be our main stay
as usual. But I think they'regonna have a little bit. We're on
(08:00):
there on their plate this year andalso Father's Day with him, uh Jack
Pilgrim. But because we have somany guests, we have you for a
limited amount of time. I havebeen keeping up with you a little bit.
There's some shaking Bacon basketball. They'vebeen a whole lot because we rounded
our roster off two weeks ago.I believe, what do we got going
on with UK basketball right now?So yesterday was the first first ever Club
(08:28):
Blue Nil event where it was theyou know, fans got to meet and
greet with the team for the veryfirst time, got to meet Pope,
got to see the entire roster upclose and personal. It was really really
cool. Then I was there inthe afternoons. It started at about eleven
o'clock at all Tech Arena, KentuckyHorse Park, So Yeah, it was
kind of a hectic day on youknow, early in the morning, got
(08:52):
there at nine am. It wasthe father Son camp where Pope and the
team they participated in drills and youknow kind of did did these little locker
room pet talks and film room studyand it was a really cool kind of
hands on event where I got tosee, you know, up close and
personally what this team is, whattheir personalities are like, what this coaching
staff is like, how they kindof operate with each other, and you
(09:13):
know, being at some of thesesimilar events in the past, you know,
you you kind of start comparing andsaying, Okay, well, what
does this staff do that the lastone did? What did these players do
that the last you know, severalgroups did, and so it was just
really cool kind of just getting upthe pulse of the current team and how
they're going to operate moving forward. So that was a blast that the first
(09:35):
father Son event in the morning.Drove over there. From there straight to
Kentucky Horse Park at all Tech Arena, uh the NIL event. Three thousand
ish fans were there. You know, it's really cool just you know seeing
you know, Nil that this erais just so different because these guys,
are you know these fans are directlyimpacting what these rosters look like. So
(09:58):
the fans that were invited, thesesubscribers to Club Blue were the ones that
kind of helped put this roster together. They got over seven seven figures were
worth of of of annual subscribers tokind of help lay the foundation of n
I L. And and you kindof help put this roster together. So
they were fans were rewarded with thiskind of meet and greet with Mark Pope.
(10:20):
They did a question and answer sessionwith our very own Tom Leach and
it went really really well. Andyou know, little food and game booths
and and local vendors showed up freefood for everybody, you know, and
fans got to take pictures and getget autographs and hang out with the entire
Kentucky roster. So it was areally really cool day getting to you know,
(10:41):
kind of get up and up closeand personal with these these players and
coaches for the very first time inthen immediately followed that up by watching Kentucky
hit a walk off home run andthe College World Series debut. So man,
it couldn't have been a better betterSaturday, you know, with both
basketball and football, basketball in baseballfestivities going up before we start off onto
(11:03):
a little baseball talk before we haveCoach Madison on Larry Vaught. I love
that Jack Pilgrim just said, andthat's gonna be my take for here on
that nil thingers, we're making ourfans stakeholders. Their stakeholders. They have
a direct Jack, so they havea direct impact on our program. So
it's not so much getting on Twitter, getting your Twitter fingers working and just
(11:26):
yelling at the games. And nowlike you can have an impact like if
you want this, if you wantyour kid to be And I found this
out here talking to Van Howes, because back in our era there was only
like one or two bad There wasthe five Star camp, and there may
have been in a Didas camp forbasketball and football, there was a Nike
camp. There may have only beenone or two national camps at all that
(11:48):
you can be recognized. You didn'thave social media, didn't have all those
other things. But now you getyour star rankings by showing up at camps
and people getting to see So yougotta travel. You's got to spend a
lot of money for them to see. You can't just go to a little
small school in Twinsburg or well,Van didn't go to a small school in
Baton Rouge. She went to aCatholic school, so a private school,
(12:09):
I should say. So. Thefact now at this level that if you
want UK the Wildcats to be good, your stakeholder, you invest in it
and they will be better. Andthat's the first time as long as this
is going on, when Jack Pilgrimsaid that, that kind of said changing,
that's gonna be my stamps from hereon now. Is there a problem
(12:30):
with that? Uh? Larry,Well, there's probably been a been some
times that fans have helped support theteam that maybe you just weren't so open
and it wasn't legal. The thingshave been done. This is just the
first time that everything is totally outin the open and the small donors can
have an impact on it. Andthe thing I talked to several people who
(12:52):
went to the Club Blue just kindof what I would just consider ordinary diehard
Kentucky fans and just to kind ofget their impressions. And I think the
one constant that I heard from theseveral people that I talked to last night
was that instead of feeling like thatin the past few years, any event
(13:13):
they've been at. They felt likemaybe the staff and players at the perspective
that they were doing the fans afavor, but just being there or this
coaching staff and players seemed to havethe perspective they that the fans were doing
them a favor by coming out andbeing there with them and cheering for them.
And I think, all based onthe folks that I talked to,
(13:35):
the NIL is going to take offeven more because now from the word of
mouth of what the folks there experiencedyesterday, I think you're going to have
a whole lot more people talking aboutit. And I believe I don't know
if you were still there, Jackwhen the park came up, but from
what I was told is that Markbasically said that for Club Blue members,
there's going to be an open practicesometime coming up, and I think that's
(13:56):
going to generate a lot of donations. Yeah, I'll jump jump in there.
Yeah, he said that, andyou know, kind of gave some
details that hadn't been publicly released orat least made official. You know,
said that he's you know, talkeda little bit about the series with Rick
Patino and Saint John's and like kindof the the ins and outs of how
(14:16):
that worked, and you know saidthat, you know, we're going to
be playing Ohio State and CBS SportsClassic on December twenty first up up in
New York City Madison Square Garden. You know, what better way to spend
your Christmas than in Manhattan with youknow, with with your loved ones,
if that's how you want to spendyour Christmas. Like, you know,
kind of just it was such anintimate setting where, you know, there's
(14:37):
there were three thousand people there, but it was in such a that they
had it spread out and things spacedout in different little events and cool little
things going on throughout the entire entirevenue where you didn't feel like your shoulder
to shoulder congested tight. You know, it felt like it was an intimate
one on one setting with you andwhatever player that you went to go meet
(15:01):
and stand in line with, youknow, whatever coach you wanted to meet,
you know, the assistant coaches. We're just out kind of hanging out
and you know, mingling with thefans while Mark Pope was kind of conducting
his question and answer session and allthat. It just there's there's there's no
ego with this coaching staff anymore. And you know, I hate harping on
last year's group, and you knowkind of the recent years of the cal
(15:24):
Era and all that. You know, we'll we'll move on eventually, I
promise we will. But it justit's I think you were that perfectly,
Larry. These guys are here forthe right reasons. They're not here to
uh, you know, for fortheir own benefit or you know, looking
at their watch to make sure thatyou know that they're going to make their
dinner reservations at night. They werethere for the right reasons because they want
(15:46):
to be there, because they appreciatethese fans, because they know what the
impact they are making on, youknow, their lives and the you know,
the the Kentucky roster. So it'sjust a really refreshing event overall.
We will be back after this. You are listening to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning
Sports Talk on news radio six thirtyWLP. This is the home of the
Wildcats six thirty WLAP Bank Sunday MorningSports Talk. I mean Anthony White,
(16:11):
along with Jack Pilgrim and Larry StockyardsBank, your trusted partner since nineteen oh
four. As stated at the openingof the show, we will have coach
Keith Madison on to talk about ourUK Baseball Hall of Fame coach most Wing
is coach in UK baseball history,Coach Madison, I should repeat, but
currently we have the National Coach ofthe Year SEC Coach of the Year Nick
(16:34):
min You Young and he got hisaward and he had some touching words to
say both. Hopefully it'll be okaywith me reading instead of just being a
public speaker, but I appreciate theintroduction and for asking me to do this
today. This is pretty cool. This is an amazing organization that has done
so much for the game that weall love with college baseball, and that's
(16:56):
why we're all here as SIDS sportsinformation directors. We love to be in
the shadows. We do not wantthe light on us at all. We
would prefer to stay that way.But if you'll indulge me for a minute,
Mike asked me to share a littlebit of a personal story about coach
that really kind of illustrates why we'rehere for him and for the players that
(17:19):
play for him. A few yearsago, I had a really serious medical
situation that left me hospitalized right beforethe season started. I was in the
hospital for three or four weeks coach, I believe, and this man every
single day, in the middle ofgetting ready for the season, would come
and sit by my bedside every singleday and what just hang with me whatever
(17:41):
it was till closing time. Andas coaches sometimes do, I'm pretty sure
you got ejected once or twice eitheror but it was great, I mean,
unbelievable. His wife, Kristen becameour head of household more or less,
took care of my wife and twoboys. I got home finally by
the Gracey got out of the hospital, got home and she was planting flowers
(18:04):
in my front yard. You wantto talk about people that are amazing people
and good things happen to them.Nick Minjione is that guy. He cares
about his young men as he hasa phrase a student, person, player
in that order, and he's livedit and he's shown leadership and humanity and
(18:26):
I love them both for that verymuch. So I apologize for getting a
little emotional, but we're probably supposedto keep people at arm's length when you're
a coaching a SID to make surethat you don't overdo things. But they
are unbelievable people, and I thinkyou see it in the way that his
guys play for him every single day, and they run through a wall for
him, they play with their pantson fire, and it's because of him.
(18:48):
It's because of the way he doesthings. He sets the example.
So I'd like finally to do whatwe do best and shine the light on
Nick Minngion. You're NCBWA, MikeMartin National Coach of the Year. Thank
you. You know, I've beengetting emotional a lot lately because this right
here is actually I really view thisas a team award and just had a
(19:14):
men's Bible study in the hotel andjust I've made a lot of mistakes as
a head coach, and I cantell you one of the things that I've
done well is surround myself with amazingpeople and just went around at table this
morning. When you think of coaches, staff players, guys like Matt you
just you cannot receive any award likethis without having yourself surrounded and just covered
(19:41):
with amazing people. So if there'sanything I've done well and I've made a
lot of mistakes, is I've surroundedmyself with just the greatest people that have
allowed us to receive this award andif it's okay with you guys, what
I would like to do is findout who made these. I would like
to get a couple more and giveto the rest of my staff, because
(20:03):
there's no way I could have donethis. So from the bottom of my
heart, thank you, and Ido not take this award lightly. We
are filled and you guys know thiscollege baseball is doing as well as it's
ever been and in large part becauseof the great coaches and leaders and men
that we have. So to receivethis award just means a great deal to
(20:26):
me. So thank you, andI have no words. So when we
return, the next voices you hearwill be ours, along with coach Keith
Madison will be back after this. You're listening to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports
Talk on news radio six thirty. This is the home of the Wildcats six
thirty WLAPL. Welcome back Stockyards BankSunday Morning Sports Talk. I am Anthony
(20:51):
White along with Jack Pilgrim and LarryVault this hour Sunday Morning Sports talking about
you by country Boy Brewing, andas promised, we are now probably to
be joined by Hall of Fame formerUK baseball coach Most winning is coach in
the UK baseball history. Coach KeithMadison, good morning, coach, thanks
for joining us. Thank you Anthony. I appreciate you guys having me.
(21:14):
Well we started off where we're atright now, we're what is your thoughts
of where the team is right nowor where coach min Jone has this team
at. Well, I'll tell youit's it's phenomenal. Coach man Jones is
a great leader and an incredible coachand he's done such a fabulous job of
(21:36):
putting this team together. And greatgroup of young men, Anthony, just
outstanding group. And and do theyever rise to the occasion many they gave
me yesterday about gave me a heartattack. That's something that that's one thing
I do love about this team. And it's kind of I think it zoos
kind of Coach min Jones's personality thatevery game from the from the the steal,
(22:03):
I guess, not the steal, but the pass ball that we we
get get home and we get tothe World Series on that played. Then
you got daily last night with awalk off home. Every game it can
be anybody is always somebody. TheCats are never out of a game.
Is that something that's coached. Isthat the personality of the players or is
it the personality of the coach.I think I think I think it's a
(22:25):
little bit of all of that. And I think the personality of the coach
sort of enhances all that in theplayers because you know, he's a he's
a guy that really believes and asyou know, when an athlete believes,
great things can happen. And becausecoach Min's Young believes in those kids,
they believe more in themselves and sothat allows them to do the game winning
(22:52):
base running efforts like Noah McCarthy didin the finals of the Super Regionals,
and and the way Mitch Deeley MitchDaily, I'm sorry, I hit the
hit the game winning home run yesterday. And I think I think, uh,
coach man Jones is a guy thatinstills that in them, and uh
boy, they they really play foreach other, and that's a that's a
(23:15):
beautiful thing to see. Keep talkinga little bit about what the atmosphere was
like out there yesterday. Listing withyou and Darren and watching on TV,
it just seemed incredible that it seemedlike there was an awful lot of blue
in that stadium. There was alot of blue at that stadium, which
made me feel really good. Youknow, Darren and I. It's a
(23:37):
pretty pretty good sized stadium, sowe were up pretty high. We had
a great view of all the UKfans and they were scattered throughout the stadium,
but you know then we had thatthat big block of UK fans up
above the UK dugout and they werethey were into it, and it was
uh. You guys would have beenproud to be part of Big Blue Nations
(24:00):
seeing that. And I did wantto ask a little bit about I know,
we love where coach minji On isat right now as we listened to
an emotional clip about him getting theCoach of the Year award that was shared
by Matt May, who's a greatguy. A couple of years ago,
he wasn't he wasn't looked at theway he is now. And I know
(24:21):
you were here for almost a quarterof a quarter of a century coaching here.
There's ups and downs. How howcan you put in perspective what Nick
has been I know he said inseveral interviews he's been coming emotionally these last
couple of weeks. Can you putin perspective just from your experience where he
may be experiencing, or maybe theelation he has from you know, just
(24:44):
having some achievement after where he mayhave been two or three years ago.
Yeah. Absolutely, I you know, first of all, he I mean,
he knew absolutely where he stood, and he knew that things were going
the way that he wanted them go. They weren't going the way that uh,
you know, the the diehard fanswanted wanted them to go, and
(25:07):
he didn't. He didn't sit backand do nothing about it. He just
kept learning and growing as a coach. And uh, you know, he
tells everybody, Hey, I thefirst time I was ever a head coach
is when I came to Kentucky. And he had that incredible first year where
they won a regional and and uhlost the super regionals to Louisville. And
(25:30):
that was kind of a magical firstyear. And you know, it's easy
for a coach to think, hey, this is not too hard, but
you know, it's not always likethat. And and then he he did
pretty well, and then he hitthat he hit that slump. And part
of that was during COVID, whichwas just a weird time. But he
(25:52):
was constantly asking people around him thatknew anything about leadership, that knew anything
about coaching. He's like a lifetimelearner. You know. He's not one
of those guys that say, hey, I've got all this figured out,
it's going to work out now. He's learning and growing every year, and
boy has it ever paid off.Okay, Key, here's the question.
(26:17):
Now, you've been going out tothe College World Series for about I think
thirty years now. I assume unlessDoug Flynn kept you from being able to
do your job because he was outthere acting crazy and I don't like him,
you have to roommate with him.But you've seen these other teams that
are out there. What's going tohappen in this next week? Now?
Do you think for Kentucky baseball?Well, I mean, we're the number
(26:41):
two seed in the nation for areason, and I think it's because we
may not have an incredible superstar likeJack Kglon or some of these other guys.
We have a lot of good players. We have a conglomerate of good
players that play hard together, thatexecute offensively, perhaps better than those other
(27:03):
teams. Tennessee is a team thathas the most talent really of any team
in the College World Series. Butyou know, sometimes the most talented teams
don't win. Sometimes the best teamswin, if you know what I mean.
Hey, coach, I wanted toask you, and this is one
(27:25):
thing I've asked coach man Jeng.I don't think he gets I'm a novice,
so I'm not as deeply into baseballas you are as far as the
details. But I did notice Ihave a really good friend who's baseball,
and it's about your nerve pattern andback and tough situations that if you don't
you know, you don't get twitchy, you don't get nervous. And it
(27:45):
seems like we have timely hitting whenwe needed the ball is so small.
I just don't understand the dynamics ofbaseball. But is that something that the
transfer portal brought guys in who canmake contact when contact has to be made?
Is that something our hitting coach done? Is that? Uh? Is
that exceptional to you as it isto me as from a just a novice
(28:07):
I've or do you feel the sameway I do? That they make timely
hits all of the time, asif they don't get shook in by the
moment. Yeah, I mean that'sa great point, Anthony. I mean,
it's a it's a hard game.I mean, as you know,
football is a hard game, butthey are hard games in different ways.
Baseball is a is a game thatyou know, in football, you just
(28:30):
most of the time you're skilled andyou're trained, but you react. In
baseball sometimes you have a little bittoo much time to think about it.
You have time, you have timein between pitchers to think about it.
When a guy you know just comesup and in on you as a ninety
five mile hour fastball or something,it's then you got a few seconds there
to think about the next pitch. So it could be challenging in that way.
(28:55):
But I think I think coach Minjonand coach a Muratti and and coach
Kusen and all these guys, they'vedone a great job of training our guys
to slow the game down and notlet their heart rate get too high,
and to be present in the moment. You know. Nick talked yesterday about
(29:15):
you know, depression comes when youlook too much in the past, and
anxiety comes when you look too muchin the future. You've got to be
in the present. You can't beanxious about what the next pitch is going
to do. You just have tobe present. So I think I think
he's done a tremendous job of preparingthese guys. Plus it goes back further
into recruiting when and I've told somany people this, he's done a great
(29:40):
job of bringing people in from theportal, not only that can play the
game very well, but but reallygood people that will that are coachable and
that will adapt to his style ofbaseball. You know, you can go
into the portal and you can getgood athletes, but if they're not willing
to buy in and to what you'reteaching, then it's not going to work.
(30:03):
And he's been able to get theseguys that have the capacity to buy
into what he and his staff areteaching, and it has worked very well
for him. Hey coach, youhave a Hey coach, you have a
special connection with this program obviously andknowing the history and I just it had
to it has to have been anemotional several weeks for you getting up to
(30:27):
this point and you know, gettingout to Omaha and it just talk us
through your emotion on the hit whenwhen when Daily goes goes field left field,
what was your reaction to seeing it, seeing the motion of the fan
base and knowing what you've been through, all the winds you've seen, and
knowing that that was one that thisprogram has never seen. Well, first
(30:51):
of all, Happy Father's Day toall the fathers out there. And I
say that because I feel a littlebit like a proud father. And anybody
that's ever had a son or daughterthat's played sports and you watch them and
you watch them overcome adversity and havesuccess, it is a special feeling.
(31:12):
And that's the only thing I canrelate this to. When I saw Nolan
McCarthy score that winning run against OregonState last week, and then when I
saw Mitch Daily hit that home runyesterday, and I saw all the plays
that were made and the success they'rehaving, I feel like a proud father.
(31:33):
And so it's you know, Iinvested so much into the program for
twenty five years and love my playersand love the program, and to see
those guys compete and excel and theway they do, it's a very proud
moment. Keith. It's obviously toget a win the World Series is huge,
(31:56):
but as you said, Kentucky's numbertwo for a reason. Now,
help me out with the logistics here, used a lot of pitching yesterday,
but you've got till Monday night torecover. Should everybody on the pitching staff
except the starter be available Monday nightagain? Now, because I'm assuming every
game in the World Series you throweverybody you've got. If you've got a
change to win, absolutely, yougot to win that first. I mean,
(32:20):
you don't have to win the firstgame, but it's a double elimination.
But it's sure makes life a loteasier if you win that first game.
And that's why you know Nick andDan Roselle and all his staff,
they were going all out to winthat game. And the way that the
College World Series is set up,it's different than the Regionals or super Regionals.
(32:40):
You do have a day off sothat those guys in your book ND
can get some rest and in mostcases relief pitchers if they come in and
pitch an inning or maybe even twoinnings, they actually do well if they
had one day off and come back, you know, whereas a starter,
he you know, I think Ithink cruiser through just a little bit over
(33:06):
one hundred pitches. You know,it takes a lot more recovery time.
But the way the term it's setup it does bode well for our bullpit
because they're going to get some rest. Hey, coach, I want to
get you out of here with thisquestion. Uh doing this show for almost
twenty years with Larry Vault, I'mtrying to get your numbers. Coach,
I'm trying to get up there witha quarter of a century at a job.
(33:29):
What advice would you get to thefan base and I guess even the
team as well, because we wentin so much greatness here at the university
and you don't look at it untilfifteen or twenty years later when it's not
and it's not had this been replicated, what advice would you give them,
you know, through this whole ride, no matter what happens tomorrow, what
happens the next couple of weeks. What advice would you offer from from your
(33:52):
connection with the university. Yeah, you know, like like my buddy Doug
Flynn said, just so the in. Soak it all in and enjoy the
moment and try not to be Imean, you know, football players at
the college level and even at theNFL level make mistakes. Baseball players at
(34:14):
the college level and major league levelmake mistakes. Try not to be too
critical and just soak in the momentand know that these kids are performing to
the very best of their ability. They're giving an incredible effort, and they're
winning, and they're winning big,and they're on the biggest stage in all
of college baseball. So just reallysoak it in and enjoy the moment.
(34:37):
I appreciate you Coach Madison for joinedus this morning. Happy Father's Day to

(35:00):
WLAP. Welcome back Stockyards Thanks SundayMorning Sports Talk. I am Anthony White
along with Jack Pilgrim and Larry VauxBo Robinson playing them hits as usual.
Thanks to Coach Keith Madison. Iwanted to ask him about some of my
former teammates. We had some footballplayers who played baseball. Vince Harrison is
(35:21):
still coaching, I think in minorleague baseball, but we didn't have a
lot of time with him, butwe do appreciate him joining us. And
I feel a little bit better aboutmyself because when you talk to baseball minds
like menji On and Madison and theypick up when I'm putting down there,
I sound like I got a littleintelligence. I feel like I made no
baseball more than I think. ButBo, you were around a little baseball
(35:45):
talk this week, Huh? Iwas, And I'm always around baseball talk
running the UK network doing the baseballgames. But if you just kind of
hang out with my good friend DarrenHendrick or coach Keith Madison, it's amazing
how much you absorbed just listening tosomebody like Keith Madison and Oscar Combs and
(36:06):
I. We sat down with KeithMadison a few years ago and recorded an
interview. I posted it yesterday onex Twitter at BO Big Blue and it's
a two part series that we didwith Coach Madison. And he's just so
cool to listen to, so knowledgeableabout the game of baseball. So if
you're enjoying Keith Madison on the radioworking with Darren Hendrick, go check out
(36:29):
the podcast Oscar Combs and I didwith Coach Madison. You'll enjoy it.
The only place to find it ison your or is the link to iHeart
actually on your handle. Go tooscarcombs dot com. We've got a whole
list of all the podcasts that wedid with former UK basketball players, football
players, Coach Madison, and alsotoo on Twitter. I've got a link
(36:50):
up there as well. Where's isCoach Madison still local? Where's he at?
Where's he at now? He isin Nicholasville and he has a critter
problem too. If you listen tothe game day broadcast, he talks about
the credit problem and he's having onhis property. You need to talk to
him. Yeah, because that birdhas gotten back in my front yard and
I've seen them feeding, so Ithink they think they're there at the State.
(37:13):
So my friend yard has not beencut in two weeks. Larry Vaught,
I appreciate you for getting Coach Madisonlined up with us, or maybe
that was a time LEAs thing Imay need to give time credit to,
maybe not you, but your thoughtson what coach had to say. Keith
always great again. When I reachedout to him last night, he was
very gracious about doing this with astate there an hour earlier than I sat
(37:38):
there, so it's a little bitearly. But as he said to him,
he's rooming with Doug Flynn, theformer Cincinnati reah im work himself.
But he said it wasn't too awfullywild tonight that Flann. He sent me
a text that Flynn was asleep atten o'clock last night, so he was
going to make trouble being able toget up and be with us at all
day that they were exactly out onthe town or anything like that. But
(37:59):
yeah, he poured so much intothat program and it has been so great
that every coach that's come for thecoaches that have come after him, and
the fans still I think can reallyenjoy Keith. And he still does a
lot of things with the baseball programnow. He conducts a Bible study for
the UK coaching staff each week, and he told me in the four and
the several years that he's been doingthat now, but Nick ben Jones only
(38:22):
missed it four or five times. How again, they do this weekly,
and so for him to do that, they just have a great relationship.
I'm so happy for Keith to beout there and be part of this and
hope He's going to get to seeseveral more UK wins this week, and
that is Larry Vaught. We willbe back after this. This is Stockyards
