Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the home of the Wildcats. Six thirty WLAP
Welcome back, Stockyards Bank, Sunday Morning Sports Talk.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
I'm Anthony D. White along with Larry Vauk, coming to
you from Old Clark's Main Street Market studios and old
Downtown lexing in Kentucky. Yeah, return, refresh and refuse. But
what now? At this point, we are proud to be
joined by my former defensive back, Counter Parks. I was

(00:31):
a defensive back as a freshman. If people don't know that,
then there's a nugget for you. But most people probably
do know that. But I was moved back to running
back because Moe Williams got injured. Then all the other
backs got injured, so I had to run scout team
and be a hit and dummy my freshman year. Otherwise
I would still have been a defensive back over there
with Van House. Good morning, Van House, how are you doing?

Speaker 3 (00:54):
Good morning? I'm doing amazing. Can I do something real quick?

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Uh? I'm kind of yeah, sure, go ahead, okay, Uh mister.

Speaker 4 (01:06):
Ball, yes, sir.

Speaker 3 (01:08):
Have you been keeping up with Molly Wise?

Speaker 5 (01:11):
I certainly have. That's my former intern, very very proud
of her talking to her Thursday night.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
Well, she has qualified for.

Speaker 6 (01:19):
She qualified for nationals next yesterday or the day before whatever.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
Fine Thursday, yes, right Thursday.

Speaker 5 (01:28):
For the University of Richmond, the only track athlete they
had reached the NCAA championship, the first one they've had
to make it in four years. And not bad for
a young lady who didn't start even participating you COLT
until her junior season because she thought she's gonna be
a college volleyball player until now. And now, no matter
what happens, she can't be worse than twenty fourth in

(01:49):
the nation, no matter what happens.

Speaker 6 (01:51):
In Thank you, mister b I knew you knew all
the all all the stats. It's her progression has been amazing,
all right, Anthony, I'm sorry.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Larry Fox. Have we had her on the show? Why
does that name sound for me? Or have I met
her before?

Speaker 5 (02:07):
You probably met her. She came to a couple of
UK football days with a and was a regular on
my show I do locally here and so she was
You probably talked to or met her that way.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
Okay, I know the name sounds extremely familiar. So congrats
to you, Ms Wise U van hous Larry Vauught. We've
been having some callers. I'm getting text messages. Everybody's all
up at arms at times. Call I do not disagree
with Tom, but Van House, I want to point out
one thing, and he said that Mark Stoops is a

(02:43):
losing this coach. He's a winning and a losing his coach,
which I disagree with. I do disagree with that, but
he's probably not the losing his coach because you were,
you were, you had a part in making sure that
if you if you already down ten wiz if you
if you down ten wins just off of one season,
you got a hell of a you got a hell

(03:04):
of a hill to climb. This is what I did
want to point out about Tom's call. I don't know
if you heard, but Tom said he had some things
I thought that were pertinent, I thought were relevant. But
then he said that Mark Stoops is not the greatest code.
We kept calling him the winner his coach, myself and
Jack Pilgrim, and he didn't agree with that. Which those

(03:26):
are facts, so those are things that can be fact checked.
But the one thing I did want to point out,
I want to see how you feel about the weight
of this. The one thing I did want to point
out based off Tom's call was since Mark stoops first
three years, he took over a program that was two
and ten, he mirrored that two and ten with another
to in ten, he has five and he started off

(03:48):
with five wins, so he went five and seven.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
The next two years.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
So since his first three years, once he changed the
program around, he has not been under five hundred except
for last year and that and that all SEC schedule,
that COVID all SEC schedule, which was still five and six.
So you won five SEC games, right, so, and it's tenure.
I don't know if any coach, so I understand what

(04:14):
Tom is saying, but I just kind of wanted to just,
you know, since you're a football guy. I know you
you played football, but you are more versed probably and
you are very knowledgeable in a lot of other sports.
Is why you brought a Maley wise, But I did
want to since we have been talking football all show,
you're a former football player. I did want to bring

(04:36):
up that the value of Mark stutis and I don't
think that people appreciate that enough. That he's only since
he turned the program around. We give him those first
three years. People say it takes four years to turn
around the program. That means you get rid of the
old players and you got your own players in he's
been under This is the first year he's really been
under five hundred because of all SEC schedule. I don't

(04:56):
give you a mulligan for it. But we still were
five and six, so we won five SEC games.

Speaker 6 (05:03):
Well, first, I'm gonna say this, we won four SEC
games because we won a bowl game, So, uh, my bad.

Speaker 3 (05:09):
And the code year. Here's the thing, man, and this
is the hardest thing for fans to understand. I don't
know how old Tom is.

Speaker 6 (05:17):
Maybe he's a young cat who only who has been
spoiled by Coach Stoups and what he's brought the program
to be. But I have done this many times. I've
looked at the history of all program and you go
year by year.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
These are the best times now.

Speaker 6 (05:35):
Unfortunately for Coach Stoups is he is the He has
created an enemy to himself by bringing the program to
a level down. Now, expectations are higher than has ever been.
It is undeniable that what Coach Stups has done now,
the thing that's gone, that thing that's hurts Coach Stops.
It's the whole text a and m thing. Perception is reality,

(05:58):
and a lot of fans do not like the fact
that he had.

Speaker 3 (06:02):
One and one in fifteen sixteenth.

Speaker 6 (06:05):
Shoe out of the door before you trying to come
back here. So with that said, I can't believe the
history is the history. You're a gambler. The past is
why you gamble a certain way. And if you look
at the past of all program this is kind of
the average is seven to six wins, and that's just

(06:26):
the hard truth.

Speaker 3 (06:28):
And to get to.

Speaker 6 (06:29):
Another level it requires a lot being in the toughest
conference in the country.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
Okay, So the other based off that the topic is
do you think that Mark Stoops is being compensated fairly?
Do you think it's overpaid being compensated fairly? And I
think the times other thing was do you think his
time is up here?

Speaker 3 (06:55):
All right?

Speaker 6 (06:56):
It's like anything. I'm a business owner. It's like anything
in business and life. The longer you stay in a
certain position, the more money you're gonna make.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
That's just how life is.

Speaker 6 (07:08):
This guy, I think is what the second longest tenure
guy in the SEC or is he first? Now since
Saved and left, I think he's first to Savan left right, lare.

Speaker 5 (07:17):
Yeah, first, Clay five saying when you were talking about Tom,
he said he went back to Stallfield, so he's been
around watching football for a while.

Speaker 3 (07:25):
Okay, okay, so so so Thomas upset.

Speaker 6 (07:29):
I'm gonna speculate because of what happened with him trying
to exit stage left. So with that said, when you're
the longest tenure, look at some of the guys who
are not longer to you.

Speaker 3 (07:41):
I think Lane.

Speaker 6 (07:43):
Kiffin makes even with coach Stoops are right there. Kelly
makes more than Stoops. Kirby smart.

Speaker 7 (07:52):
So it's kind of weird that fans only look at
It's kind of like when we look at teams next
year and how we project what the seasons going to be.
We don't give ourselves the the marginal era of the
if and coach has changed this program to what it
is now.

Speaker 6 (08:10):
What you could have done as a fan is allowed
him to go after twenty eighteen season, then y'all would
have been upset.

Speaker 3 (08:16):
That ms barmher.

Speaker 7 (08:17):
How can you there let the one of the best
coach in school history leave if you don't want them
to leave, You got a pony up and that's and
that's intentional.

Speaker 2 (08:25):
Wise, he that pony up, I will say, Larry Vaughton
and Jack Larry Vard and Van Larry Vard did you
know that? Because Van pointed out that the one season
was a Bowl win, so it was a four and
sixth season we went feign six in the SEC. Larry
Vaud do you know that every in the history of coaching?

(08:47):
And Corey Price you can correct me. I know you
don't listen to us because you're still in bed, but
if you get a chance that every every any coach
in UK history has only won five had a five
win season SEC once, it's no coaches one more than
had more than one five have not had more than

(09:08):
one five win seasons except for one coach, Larry Vapp.
You know who that is because Tom and like I said,
I like Tom's call. I do not disagree with a
lot of stuff Tom said.

Speaker 3 (09:20):
I think he.

Speaker 2 (09:22):
Was a little over zealous, maybe anger, like Van said,
and Tom knows a little something because there's not been
a whole lot of people talking about the details around
the Texas A and M thing, and I don't think
it was a good thing. And it's kind of like
showing up to the prime and your date doesn't show up,
or you stop, go to pick up your date at
the prime, they don't show up. I don't think Mark Stoops.

(09:45):
Maybe he did want to leave once once he saw
with the contract had in it. I don't think it
was going to be in his favor anyhow, So I'm
not sure how it all panned out. But Larry Vaughd,
he's the only coach has one five games the SEC
more five or more games multiple times. Every every other

(10:06):
coach bears done at once. Call you has done it once? Uh, Cursey,
I think.

Speaker 3 (10:11):
That it once. I don't know.

Speaker 5 (10:15):
Yeah, probably the year that they killed a really good
year that I would say that.

Speaker 3 (10:22):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (10:22):
So there's a lot like four at all. There's only
been like four coaches to do it. Four or five
coaches do it at all. But Mark Steuss is the
only one who did it twice.

Speaker 5 (10:31):
Of course, you can flip it around, say Mark Soops
only one to make nine million dollars a year or two.
I mean that's I think part of it is just
when you start raising that bar a little bit, and
then you go into last season and you're pretty cocky,
I mean overall with your comments, which is which is okay,
but you got the best talent you've ever had. You've
got the most depth that you've ever had. You've got

(10:53):
the quarterback that everybody wanted to get out of Georgia,
you got him. You've got the receivers that are the
best the nation. You've got some you know, other players
are just top ten draft picks, and then you go
four and eight. You got to come out and eat
a little crow or something. And so I think people
are just now waiting and wanting to see that you felt.

(11:15):
They feel like it is taking a step backwards, some
kind of feel like. And then you throw in the
Texas A and m okay, does that.

Speaker 4 (11:22):
Mean he really wanted to be here? He didn't want
to be here.

Speaker 5 (11:24):
So I just think a lot of things out there
kind of created some of this turmoil. And that's why
I say, I think it's good. Like what Stoops said
to Randall Cobb. You though he didn't say a whole lot,
but at least he just says, hey, we're not talking
about individual players because we felt like some of we
got cocky last year because they thought they were better
than maybe what they really were, because of some of
the praise we will give them. So we're cutting back

(11:45):
on that because as I told you last week, when
you're saying nothing, most of the people I'm talking to
are listening to out here saying, well, they must think
they're going to be terrible at this time. Last year's
telling us the best team he's ever had. This year,
you want to tell us what won't tell us anything.
So I think that's at least to start that he
needs it a little bit better. PR job, As I said,
the worst PR you could ever done is giving your

(12:06):
offensive line coach a raise, you know, a fifteen percent
raise after what last season was to me. I think
that's created a lot of the uproar right now.

Speaker 3 (12:17):
Also, Van, I want to know what you think about that.

Speaker 2 (12:20):
But we got to get to a break, so when
we come back, we're gonna find out what you think
about that one hundred thousand dollar raise we gave to
our office line coach.

Speaker 3 (12:26):
We'll be back after this.

Speaker 2 (12:27):
You're listening to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk on
news radio six thirty WLAP.

Speaker 1 (12:32):
This is the home of the Wildcats, six thirty WLAP.

Speaker 2 (12:37):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I'm Anthony D.
White along with Larry Vaught is still joined by Van Hiles.
Stockyards Bank has been your trusted partner since nineteen hundred
and four, so head on over to syb dot com
for all your banking and financial needs and just says

(13:01):
a reminder, we only have two more segments. At eleven forty,
we will be handing the call and the show over
to Darren Hedrick for UK baseball as they try to
get back into the winning bracket, which we will talk
about that in the last segment, because I don't know
what the winning bracket is like, either lose or you win.
There's only two options, and they play Clemson today at noon,

(13:23):
So at eleven forty we will be off, but we
are still talking football with former defensive back University of
Kentucky NFL defensive back Van Howes, Larry Vaught and Van
I want to point this out before we go back
to talking about the raises that happened this past week.
There's been two coaches Larry Vaught, Van House to have

(13:48):
more than four wins four or more wins in the SEC.
Mark Stoops had three and Bear Bryant had three. The
Great the Great Rich Brooks, which I really respect in
love Great Rich Books, only had one. Get this Larry

(14:10):
Vaught and have mommy's three see four seasons because I don't. Well, yeah,
when he didn't have me or Tim on the field, Uh,
he had, he had two four wins seasons and it's
four years, so half of his career, half of his tenure.
He was five hundred and SEC and that rarely happened.

(14:32):
And so like I said, Mark Steups has had more
four or more wins in the SEC three times when
someone people say was not SEC competition the history of
this damn program, nobody's been getting four wins and Mark
Steups has done it three times.

Speaker 3 (14:49):
Wait a minute, four times. I didn't. I forgot about that.

Speaker 2 (14:51):
Of THEE I didn't really count because I because it
was under five hundred, so I really didn't count it.
But yeah, he's done it more than anybody else. Only
person who's done it is him as Barry Brain. But anyways,
I digress, Van Hiles and I would like to knee,
how do you feel about taking one hundred thousand year
old dollars of our dollars and giving them to a

(15:14):
position that needs And Larry Vault kind of misworded it
because if you have you are you said, you're a
business owner. If your business is lacking in a in
an area, when you put more resources and money towards
making it better.

Speaker 3 (15:28):
Maybe maybe look.

Speaker 6 (15:31):
And this is why I love the great Larry vault
Is because I think as a journalist he speaks for
the fans. Ye like really really truly for the fans.
And I understand the fans standpoint of why would you
do this to this team? After seeing that performance from
that position group last year?

Speaker 3 (15:53):
I totally get it.

Speaker 6 (15:55):
But as you just said, one thing about Wolf is
that it was his first he was coming back first season.

Speaker 3 (16:03):
Those were not his guys, you.

Speaker 2 (16:05):
Know, coming back? Why is he coming back? Why did
he leave in the first one? How did he leave now? Anthony,
Now that's a whole nother question that isn't a question
that was supposed.

Speaker 3 (16:23):
You go on both sides of the fence. I'm shocked
that he comes back.

Speaker 6 (16:30):
But it's like this when you have a good friend,
obviously him and coach stups of friends. There are things
friends can do to you that other people can and
maybe as a friend you kind of understand the reason
why certain things happen more than everyone else.

Speaker 3 (16:45):
As a fan, it is a.

Speaker 6 (16:48):
I don't want to SCC so I can't say the
word that I want to say is unfortunate. But then
as a friend, maybe your friend comes back and say, look,
I apologize, this is why I left.

Speaker 3 (16:59):
You know why I left, and you can you can
get over that.

Speaker 6 (17:03):
I don't agree with the with the rais, but I
also can understand there are reasons why you give a
guy a raise if you choose to believe in him
and what he can bring to the to the coaching
room with the recruiting that he has done. Now, and
can I get one second, because I want to uh
broke dis thing?

Speaker 3 (17:24):
Last year?

Speaker 7 (17:24):
Right, A lot of people in Larry Voard just said
that we had the best roster and Jay Row said
sometime after the season that really just was not the
best roster.

Speaker 6 (17:36):
And it totally makes sense. And here's the reason why
that offensive line last year we knew was not gonna
be good. Am I correct? You even told me that
we knew the offensive line wasn't gonna be good. Right
then we bring in a quarterback with no experience.

Speaker 3 (17:52):
Is that not correct? Right? Then we have a running
back room with no experience.

Speaker 7 (18:00):
So it's interesting how last year team was the team
with the most talent and the most depth.

Speaker 3 (18:07):
All of that was really on one side of the ball.
That was the defensive side. So here's the thing.

Speaker 6 (18:12):
If we have all this this hype last year with
what that roster was right, inexperienced quarterback, no running back room,
bad offensive line.

Speaker 3 (18:23):
Now this season, why.

Speaker 7 (18:24):
Can't we have the same height when we have a
definitely a better offensive line. We have a quarterback that
played INNCC has progressed in this time away from SCC,
has put up pretty good numbers. We have a running
back room that I would say it's better than the
running back room going to last year. But now the
sentiment from everyone else's all this is going to be

(18:47):
a horrible year.

Speaker 3 (18:48):
But last year.

Speaker 7 (18:50):
Expectation was higher with even more question marks on the offense.

Speaker 2 (18:56):
I agree with you, Van House. We always appreciate you.
We got baseball coming up, so I gotta let you go,
but I do appreciate your perspective. Got a real quick
fact check. Mark Stoops has won more four or more
games the SEC five times. I am corrected five times.
Bear Brian only did it three times, Rich Brooks did
it one time. Get all my man's back, Van House.

(19:18):
Thank you for joining us, and we will continue this show.
After this, you're listening to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports
Talk on news Rightdio six thirty WLAP.

Speaker 1 (19:26):
This is the home of the Wildcats. Six thirty WLAP.

Speaker 2 (19:30):
Welcome back to the final segment of Stockyards Bank Sunday
Morning Sports Talk.

Speaker 3 (19:37):
I'm Anthony D.

Speaker 2 (19:38):
White along with Larry Vaught. Thanks to Van House for
joining us. This hour of Sunday Morning Sports Talk is
going to be brought to you by Country Boy Brewing.
Because we have baseball coming on at noon on six
thirty WLAP. Darren Heddrick will be on the call, or
if you want to watch it ocular visually, you can

(20:02):
check it out on ESPN. So Larry Vaughs first and
second of all, let me wish had happy birthday to
bowl Larry and our favorite person, the state of Kentucky,
Larry Vaugh. The state of Kentucky is today two hundred
and thirty three years old. And I told both I

(20:22):
don't think it looks a day over two hundred and
thirty two years old.

Speaker 5 (20:29):
Well, I like your thinking. I like you taking giving
people the benefit of the doubt or giving things the
benefit of the doubt.

Speaker 2 (20:35):
So like that, Larry, I've been keeping up with the
bat catch, But how does this thing work? Bow was
trying to explain it to me. Maybe you can explain
it to and they're saying that they lost the game,
then they lost to West Virginia down in Clemson. Then
they beat USC Upstate, and now they got to play

(20:56):
again in the regional. Then they're going to enter something
called the super Regional. Like it ain't just enough for
it just be called regional. Why did you just call
it like district called it something else?

Speaker 3 (21:07):
But how do you lose? Then win?

Speaker 2 (21:09):
Didn't get a chance to go go.

Speaker 5 (21:11):
On because it's double elimination, so I have to lose
twice before you're out. So if they win, if they
do win today, then they would meet West Virginia in
the finals, but they would have to beat West Virginia
twice to advance because West Virginia does not have a
loss yet.

Speaker 8 (21:28):
So basically we're asking Kentucky to win three games in
about twenty four hours. So they'll have to play West
Virginia twice today if they win, no.

Speaker 5 (21:39):
They'd beat if they beat Clemson, they not today, but
they would have to play them twice to advance.

Speaker 2 (21:46):
I thought both told me they have to play again
at six o'clock.

Speaker 8 (21:48):
Would play six o'clock tonight against West Virginia and then tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (21:52):
Oh then tomorrow. Okay, dang, that's how do you prepare
for that? Then pray.

Speaker 5 (22:00):
You win your first games what you usually do to
prepare for it, then you don't get in this situation.
But now, like you say, Bo says, you have to
find a way to try to win or hope for
rain or you got to have nine guys have the
bullpen pitching any each and that could be a problem
for Kentucky goes the biggest issue this year. I think
Bo has been their bullpen.

Speaker 8 (22:21):
Yeah Walker yesterday he was fantastic for Kentucky. But the
pitching a big concern too. But also the concern I
have is keeping the lead and closing out the ball games.

Speaker 5 (22:36):
Yeah, I said, bullpen can't hold it.

Speaker 3 (22:40):
Well, that is interesting.

Speaker 2 (22:41):
So you can't catch baseball here when we leave, you
stay you stay right here and you can hear a
baseball pregame show with Darren Hedrick and then turn your
TV on at noon and you can watch the game.
But in the meanwhile, as Larry Vatt, I'm kind of
concluding there's two things I wanted to discuss when we
have a minute and a half. But I did appreciate

(23:05):
Van coming on. The Van did make a great point.
I'm trying to get the fans back optimistic that this
team probably is returning a lot more people, and the
optimism we had last year was based off of expectation,
so they ain't really expectation. But we are returning in
a lot of people from A four and eighteen, which

(23:25):
I don't know. I think Van kind of twisted those
words and made me think he always does that because
we are not returning as many people, because our receiving
room has a lot of turnover, quarterback room has a
lot of turn running back.

Speaker 3 (23:38):
I think he just do me.

Speaker 4 (23:39):
Larry Man would never do that to you, Anthony, would
do you agree with that?

Speaker 2 (23:47):
I just thought about that we don't have a lot
of returners from last year.

Speaker 4 (23:52):
We got Wilcox, You just named one person, That's what
I say.

Speaker 5 (24:00):
Our guy Patterson, we thought, but he had some kind
of injury that kept him from doing a lot.

Speaker 3 (24:05):
So we will see.

Speaker 5 (24:07):
Now again it's loaded with the transfer portals, so I
don't know. We're just gonna have to hope and find
out when the season starts. A lot of it is
glad that Toledo's a little bit tougher opening game than normal,
because I just soon find out right away what I
think this team's going to be able to do or not.
I think the first two weeks to see won.

Speaker 2 (24:27):
We gotta go Larry. That's Larry Vott, got baseball coming up.
We appreciate you all of Listen. We'll be back next week. Listen,
Darren Hendrick, Let's go Cats.
