Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the home of the Wildcats. Six thirty w
l a P. Welcome back, Stockyards Bank, Sunday Morning Sports Talk.
I'm Anthony Dee White along with Larry Vaughton. We're now
proud to be joined by Walter Hawthorne, father of Braiden Hawthorne,
UK freshman Wing. Good morning, mister Hawthorn. How's it going.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
I'm going today, y'all doing today?
Speaker 1 (00:25):
We're doing pretty good. We're doing pretty good. Uh. Can
you tell us a little bit about Braiden his journey
which is not traditional. You know, a lot of things happen,
but I do think he ended up at the right place.
Tell us about Braid's journey to Kentucky.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Uh, Well, it was, I would say it was. It
was an eventful journey. It was actually it was wow.
You know, he had committed to West Virginia, you know,
with Thistab beforehand, and then the coach fab changed and
then Coach Hart had basically called Breiden, you know, right
after he had he committed and you know, saying that
(01:04):
they were interested. Unc Polk was interested.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
It was. It was really like a a dream come
true for him, you know, just to to say that,
you know, he playing for Kentucky. It's just, uh, it's
it's unbelievable. Actually, actually, I'm driving back from Kentucky now
and I was just reflecting back on when he was
younger and he went to the the Father So we
(01:27):
went to the Father Tun camps and you know, I
got to watch that yesterday. It's just it's it's unreal.
Another thing, as far as the journey goes, is just
before he even committed to West Virginia, you know, him
and Coach Harton had been in contact with each other,
you know, communicating. Coach hart was actually with through them.
Branden had just committed to West Virginia before they got
(01:50):
to come down and check them out. But Paul and
all male's happy. And I talked to him today, I said,
how do you like? He said, I love it? So
I mean, what more can upon the ass for?
Speaker 3 (02:04):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (02:04):
And I tell you walk obviously loved the picture that
you and Braiden still have. But when he came to
that Father Son camp and was sitting there by inside
Joe Hall on that statue outside of Wildcat Lodge what
we walt Cat Lodge at the time there, but I
saw as soon as you got back, was it your
idea to restage that photo? Was it UK's idea, Braidon's idea,
(02:27):
because I that was really cool seeing him the conviasas
you get back on campus, PLoP right back down, befomer
coach shoe b hell.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
Actually, I think it was a little bit of moment anyone.
Everybody wanted to do it. Braiden wanted to do it myself,
you know, and Uk it was just I think it
was a collective thing. Actually, it was just something I
thought that was neat, you know because the reason it
was so neat, And I don't know if you guys
know this or not. So the day that he had
to report was the exact same day that we went
(02:59):
to that camp June Pimp, which uh, it was just
it's all surreal, like it was just you know, something
like like in the movie that you see, you know
what I mean. So, you know, having a report the
exact same day when we went to that camp, so
it was important for him to take a picture you
know right.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
There, that is neat. I was, Uh, do you think now,
being that you've been through the whole process again you
saw the father son camp yesterday, did you think that
has impact on you know, maybe maybe players who eventually
grow up to be college do you want players? Do
you think that camp itself has an impact on you know,
(03:40):
Braden wanted to come here and you want your son
to come.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
Here, And I think it does, you know, to be
honest with you, I mean when I took him to
the Father's Son camp, that's when him and my mom's
son became UK fans, you know, like you know, they
grew up, grew up, you know, being a UK fan.
They love, you know, watching k play.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
You know that.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
I think it does personally, you know. I mean, it's
just I don't know, it's just it's all. It's just
I can't even explain it, to be honest with you,
I'm actually lost the words. How how it feels.
Speaker 4 (04:18):
Well, we'll tell folks a little bit what it was
like when Brayden did decommit from West Virginia. Entry's coach,
the coach he sided with, left and he opened his
recruitment back up. Kentucky got back involved. I already have
thirteen guys on.
Speaker 5 (04:33):
The roster, and you, as a father, did.
Speaker 4 (04:36):
You just kind of kind of step back out of
the way and let Braiden, Okay, say, there's what's in
front of you, you go decide what you want to do.
Speaker 5 (04:44):
Or did you talk with him about.
Speaker 4 (04:45):
What the process, competition was, everything was going to be
like just on the roster to be able to get
out there and get playing time.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Well, I mean we talked about it, but at the
end of the day with his division, and I told
him basically, I'm going to support with what he wants
to do. You know, I'm just here. I was just
there to guide him, you.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
Know what I mean.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
So, I mean we did talk a little bit about
you know, you know, scenario or eve and things of
that nature, But at the end of the day, it
was it was definitely his decision and I support him one.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
And did uh did the recruitment from Kentucky start with
Mark Pope or was was that? Was there a the
coaching change under Caliperry? Was that not a decision?
Speaker 3 (05:35):
You No, it wasn't.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
It's started. Actually, when it comes home, Jason Hart had
reached out. He seen Bringham playing in Rockillo, South Carolina
last year in July, and while we were down there, Uh,
he reached out, you know, and you know he just said,
you know how he my breaking the game and you know,
(05:56):
he thought that uh Bagian could be a potential place,
and you know, we stayed in contact, Braiden spoke with him.
It was just that, you know, when just started and
they were trying to get down to come seem schools
would come to see him or you know, the practice
times when he was a hunting from Prep and West
Virginia was having to come down.
Speaker 3 (06:17):
And you know, and.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
Branden, you know, really liked coach Trasia and Braden had
to commit with West Virginia and the very next day
Coach hart and reached out and said, hey, weant you know,
we want to get down there really soon. And I
told him my family, Coach Hart you know, he's already committed,
and he was just like, well, congratulations, tell him to
go out and ball out, you know, which you know,
(06:42):
I thought was pretty cool. And then full circle and
here we have it and as including opened back up
and then set.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
And does uh do you all have a relationship with
the Jasper and his family, because I do notice that
Braiden played in Woodford County, which the athletic directors is
Jasper's dad. But also though there was a connection that
Kentucky getting the opportunity to see Braiden play at Woodford County.
So I'm assuming that Jasper may have done some recruiting
of a Braiden you.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
Think, I'm not sure on that point, to be honest
with you, Jampers and great kid. I actually just met
him during you know, the time dropping Braiden off. You know, personally,
you know met him. But he's a great kid. You know,
I'm not for sure with the communication between and Branden
on that piece, but I know that henth and prepand
(07:35):
played in that tournament, you know, two years in a row.
So they were there when Brandon came his eleventh grade
year and then he played his twelfth grade year in
that tournament as well.
Speaker 4 (07:49):
So so walk tell tell folks who haven't yet had
a chance to see Braidon play a little bit about
his game and with that seven foot three inch wingspan,
what is his best position do you think or is
that to be determined?
Speaker 2 (08:05):
I think it's to be determined man as of right now.
You know, I think personally, you know, you know he's
a three. I mean, you know, Coach Arta we talked
about it. We think he's a key three position player.
You know, they can shoot it really well, even begin
get to the basket, you know, make right plays. Not
(08:25):
a selfish player, big team player. You know, that's one thing.
You know a lot of people don't know about him,
like he's super team or in a player like you know,
he loves, you know, being on a great team like
this past year. I ain't comprep. You know, he said,
you know, the team was really close and it made
(08:45):
a difference. And you know when and I can already
tell with this group just being here the past few
days there they are getting close already. It's it's unbelievable.
Not only are the team, you know, they're getting close
I would say, you know, the family's all too as well.
Like you know, some of the family members were him
(09:07):
and he hung out you know last days. I mean
it was it was great. I mean, I think you
guys are going to see something special this year.
Speaker 1 (09:15):
And my last question for you, mister Hawthorne, I asked
this all the parents because when I was actually in school,
when Mark Pope is in school, but I asked this
all the parents. When you when you talk basketball with
Mark Pope, does it confuse you or are you intrigued
by it? Because the guys just so basketball savvy. Do
you find a confused or is it intriguing to you?
Speaker 2 (09:37):
No, I love it, to be honest with you, I
love her. I've a coach Pope is amazing. I mean
talking basketball with him, I mean very detailed. I mean
it's it's unbelievable to be honest with you. I mean
I love sitting there talking about basketball with coach Poper.
I mean it's it was really great. It was a
(09:59):
great time.
Speaker 4 (10:03):
And what Yeah, I was gonna say, just tell us, just.
Speaker 5 (10:07):
Give you a proud father moment. Here.
Speaker 4 (10:08):
Two things I want to ask you before we let
you go. One, I didn't realize that Brandon at a
four point zero g P eight.
Speaker 5 (10:15):
I really don't understand.
Speaker 4 (10:16):
How you can do all you do athletically and travel
and still be able to maintain that. And then also,
you mentioned that his younger brother came with you when
he came to that father son came, Didn't I see
this recently that the younger brother, Zion perceives at least
one or not two Division one offers himself.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
Yeah, I think Zion has one seat the four he
has four or five?
Speaker 5 (10:43):
Ye?
Speaker 2 (10:44):
Yeah, four or five Division one offers. Rapper richardsol Stay
the take name Arkansas State. I'm missing one. I'm missing one.
I can't remember right on there, but I know it's
one more that I'm missing. Uh but yeah, and uh yeah,
(11:07):
Brandon being a four point oh student. He you know,
I'm still dead in both of them at an early
age that, you know, academics were very important, like in
my household and if you don't have your drinks in
not playing basketball. They love basketball so much, so you know,
they really worked on on on that piece of it.
You know, Brad is a four point oh student, Zion
(11:29):
is a four point two student. Uh what was just yeah, yeah,
it's just uh, it's just it's it's a proud dad
moment to be on the issue.
Speaker 4 (11:40):
Well I think Anthony add together were four point two
two students.
Speaker 2 (11:44):
Yeah, this time got you yes, yea yeah.
Speaker 4 (11:50):
Also that well, it's pretty phenomenal. Looking forward to seeing
breaking around something this summer. I know he's probably gonna
be wanting to watch the TV T the La Familia
team for Kenteki because I don't want player. He's looking
forward to hopefully get the chance to meet this bully
college stat.
Speaker 2 (12:07):
Oh yeah, I remember him at the camp more when
you were in the camp. Uh, Collie had some I
can't remember the shoes that he had on. Brainer said
where did you get goo shoes from? And he saying,
coach got them for me. I'm so oh yeah in
the fun times man, fun.
Speaker 1 (12:24):
Times, well, coach. Uh, mister Hawthorne, We're glad to that
you could join us this morning. Thanks for spending a
little bit of morning with us.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
Hey, I appreciate you guys for having me on.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
Okay, we look forward to we look forward to seeing
uh Braden play here. Appreciate you.
Speaker 2 (12:41):
I appreciate you guys.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
Right, thank you. We will continue this show after this break.
You're listening to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk on

Speaker 6 (12:51):
This is the home of the Wildcats six thirty w
l a P.
Speaker 1 (12:56):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I'm Anthony
White along with Larry Vaught. Stockyards Bank has been your
trusted partner, is still your trusted partner, but it's been
your trusted partner since nineteen hundred and four. So head
on over syb dot com for all your banking and
(13:17):
financial needs. Like to thank mister Walter Hawthorn for joining us.
Braden Hawthorn's dad spending some time for us this morning,
give us a little insight, and that proves that the
father and son basketball camps to UK holds helps. We're recruiting.
So if you want your kid to eventually at some
point seven to what ages seven to seventeen, If you
(13:39):
want them eventually at some point maybe a UK prospect,
bring them on over there. And we also have a
good women's team Kenny Brooks. No matter how Larry Vought
feels about Ky brook bring him to the father and
daughter basketball camp. Is a mother and why don't they
have one for the mother, Larry?
Speaker 5 (13:58):
I don't know. I don't know.
Speaker 4 (13:59):
I thought at one time that was maybe toughed about,
but I don't think it's ever been ever been done
as far as I know.
Speaker 1 (14:05):
Yeah, we need to get on that. I don't like that.
I think that's sexist. I think there should be a
mother and son, a mother and more of camps, more money,
more prospects, Larry, So it can be a mother and son,
mother and daughter, father and son, father and daughter, half
four of them all week long.
Speaker 4 (14:23):
I think probably there's a lot of folks that would
agree with you. Yeah, a lot of mothers especially.
Speaker 1 (14:28):
Yeah, there you go. See what I'm talking about. If
you have been waiting or trying to get on the
big ass Fans highline when we have guests, the lines
are you typically tied up. We cannot juggle calls. So
you can call back in because you called when we
had a guest and we couldn't get you on. You
can reach us eight five nine to eight zero two
to eight seven eight five nine to eight zero. Cats.
(14:51):
The phone lines are wide open right now, so if
you called during the time we had guests, you can
call back and we can get you on, just like
Jeff is done. Good morning, Jeff, you got for us?
Speaker 3 (15:01):
How you doing? God?
Speaker 1 (15:02):
What do good?
Speaker 3 (15:04):
Right?
Speaker 7 (15:04):
I've just been a little busy. I've been trying to
reach mister Volph for several winks. My laptop blew up
about your earlier and I had to get a new
email contact. But Lair, I do want to tell let
you know. I know you guys know what the Director's
Cup is for college? Correct?
Speaker 3 (15:21):
Yes, you know what that is?
Speaker 1 (15:23):
Yes?
Speaker 7 (15:23):
Okay, they have a high school and called the Max
Preps Cup. Did you know that?
Speaker 1 (15:28):
I did not know that.
Speaker 5 (15:29):
I've heard of it. Yes, they they have a map.
Speaker 7 (15:32):
What they do it's the top one hundred schools, but
they did and what they do is it depends on
what I have, any state championships you win or runner
up in what you have. It also it takes in
the fact that if you're nationally ranked by max Preps
in that sport, the sports you have, you get so
(15:53):
many points. So they do it like after the fall sports.
They do it after the winter sports. They do it
after the spring so the spring will get read or
some states like Iowa doesn't finish baseball or July because
they were rather unpair, so they going here in previ
I went there. If they do it the final after
the winners forwards. This year I was trying to touch you, Larry.
(16:15):
The top one hundred schools. There was a school in
Kentucky that was number two on the list. They're in Louisville, Kentucky.
I don't know why. I can't remember which one, well
I know which one, but it was in Louisville because
I can't remember the name of it. But they were
in the number one s God, I can't remembers north
they where everything they ran they and it wasn't very
(16:37):
many points. It was like maybe ten or fifteen points
away from being number one twenty or something. So I
can'tme in what say I want to say? What something
to do with heart, something sacred, heart made or something
I don't know might be the mother, but Larry would
know more to research it or talk to somebody with
k HSA and find out. So I just going down one.
(16:59):
But y'all know about and as far as the springs
far off, y'all been watching the baseball and softball, and
this is my opinion about the spring sports of Kentucky.
Baseball and softball. Neither one should have been in the
regional or neither one. They weren't very good. Softball was not.
They barely finished over five hundred. They beat Northwestern and
(17:21):
they after the regional final, which didn't really matter. Baseball,
you know, they they beat Clenching real bad, and then
they blew a three run league against West Virginia. They
blew two five run leads. So I'm glad they're not playing.
I'm glad they're out.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
Rather they're Jeff, let me ask you this really quickly
before you get you'll, let me ask you. You said
that our softball and baseball teams are do they get
any grace for playing in the toughest conference in the country.
Speaker 5 (17:47):
They do.
Speaker 7 (17:47):
I'm just saying that they're there. They're not good enough.
They're not good enough when you blow when you go
to a tournament and you blow two five run leads
in a regional final, are you kidding me? Come on on,
mister White, nothing lead in the first game, and you
let them come back and beat you when you have
when you play Vanderbilt and you let them walk you
(18:10):
off twice in three games, No, you're not worthy. I
don't care who you're playing. No, I'm not worried about
the schedule, because what they do is they take your
cops affiliation. They're not worried about what your record is.
Why is Burray State still playing?
Speaker 3 (18:26):
Hmmm?
Speaker 7 (18:27):
Why why they beat Old Miss and why baby Kentucky
during the season. I wonder why we think I think
they're pretty good art they I wonder what Little Rod
did against LSU. They did pretty good, didn't win it
off with the they played for the good against them.
And U TSA is playing U c l A right now. See,
the small schools don't get loved, but the big schools do.
(18:47):
And thirteenth and how mean survived the super regionals. Mister White,
thirteen got in? Was it four?
Speaker 1 (18:53):
Is that what it was?
Speaker 7 (18:54):
Lare that that end up end up making the regional?
Speaker 3 (18:56):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (18:57):
Okay, number one seed Vanderbilt, goodbye Wright State, goodbye Texas
u TSA, goodbye number one, number two seeds. That's pathetic. Pathetic.
It doesn't mean more to the SEC, but it means
more to Texas, San Antonio. Why tell you that it
wasn't means more in Texas Texas Tech, but Texas wanted
(19:18):
because Texas Tech picture through five hundred thousand bitches and
then nobodsk to throw That's why they want it. And
Texas Oklahoma. I didn't even count them, and they won't
have been any thirty minutes. I'm not counting them in
the SEC. They ain't going back to be twelve.
Speaker 1 (19:31):
For all our care, Jeff, we'll do much back here.
Speaker 7 (19:34):
So y'all, y'all gonna have a great rest of the summer. Guys,
enjoy your show when I get chance to listen to it.
Speaker 1 (19:39):
Thank you, Thank you. Jeff. Well pleas shot the car
would say.
Speaker 5 (19:43):
Larry, don't get that laptop fixed.
Speaker 1 (19:46):
Yeah, get the laptop fix. I gotta ask you a
question about Jeff. Larry, I find if you've ever met him,
because a lot of people that you talked to on
here and you never met. But we will talk about
that when we come back. You were listening to Stockyards
Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk on news radio SI WLAP.
Speaker 6 (20:01):
This is the Home of the Wildcats. Six thirty WLAP.
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I'm Anthony
White along with Larry Vaught. This hour Sunday one in
Sports Talk has brought you by country Boy brewinh Larry,
I wanted to ask you really quickly before we get
to the Big Ass Fans Hotline if you want to
(20:22):
join the Big Ass Fans Hotline eight five nine to
eight zero two two eight seven eight five nine to
eight zero Cats. Larry, I agree with everything Jeff said
a lot of what Jeff said. Two questions that he
did ask One was the Max Preps cups. Did you
have a suggestion? Do you think is sacred Heart any other?
Speaker 1 (20:41):
Yeah? The other, well, I ask you the other one
after you answered.
Speaker 5 (20:43):
That I really don't know because where they are girls
only scorn.
Speaker 4 (20:50):
If it was divided into female on one side and
males on the other or if it's just for high
schools and just if it's a combined, I would think
they might be a little bit of a dish advantage.
Speaker 5 (21:00):
But then again, they're pretty.
Speaker 4 (21:01):
Good in what they do, so maybe not either, because
they really dominate in a lot of sports. So I
hope maybe somebody one of our listeners will know that
and neither will call us or messages or something and
let us know, because it's kind of intrigue. You think
we didn't have a Kentucky school rank that high, And.
Speaker 1 (21:17):
I would think it would probably be Saint X because
every time I follow a lot of Saint X people
on social media, so and it seems like they're always
in the championship or in the finals somewhere. Or Larry Vaughden,
I'm not sure if you are certain or you know
this because they ain't been around very long. But Sarah
won the football and baseball state championships.
Speaker 5 (21:37):
Well, they didn't win the baseball state champion they won
won the regional championship.
Speaker 1 (21:42):
Well, why my boys say they won a baseball championship.
It is not even over yet, no.
Speaker 4 (21:49):
State tournament still, but I believe it's first time Saya
has won the eleventh Region championship.
Speaker 1 (21:55):
Ah okay, but they haven't been around very long right.
Speaker 5 (22:00):
Now, it's still still a big deal. That's exactly right.
Speaker 1 (22:02):
Oh okay. And another question is you agree with Jeff
if the baseball softball teams are baseball softball teams aren't
that good or you're gonna give him some grace there
because they because the points he made are valid. But
it kind of also proves my point that you can't
devalue what Texas or Vanderbilt has done because they got
(22:25):
exited earlier by smaller teams.
Speaker 3 (22:27):
Can you No?
Speaker 5 (22:30):
I mean they had they had really good seasons. You're
exactly right. And I think the Jeff's point.
Speaker 4 (22:35):
I think he is right that the Kentucky baseball team
was not as good this year as it was last
year when I went to the College World Series. And
I think he's right that the Kentucky softball team is
not as good.
Speaker 5 (22:45):
Now as it was three or four years ago.
Speaker 4 (22:48):
But I don't think that necessarily means you're still not
maybe good enough to be in the NCAA, because he
did say they both made the regional final after they
got in, so there was there was at least two
teams in each of the regions that they were better than.
Speaker 5 (23:02):
So uh.
Speaker 4 (23:04):
I think Jeff sometimes is very passionate and he gets
he gets really going to he has really really strong beliefs,
and you kind of stroke him there when you get
him going like that. So but I think this his
point is that they I think he was frustrated by
the way Kentucky baseball blue lead in the in the
instead of a late tournament. And I do think he
is right that Kentucky Southball has been on a little
(23:26):
bit of a downward tree in the last couple of years,
which Rachel Lowson admitted before this season started.
Speaker 1 (23:31):
Ye, I give her some time to reckonify things. I'm
not sure how much time they're going to give her,
but hopefully she'll get things turned around next year. Let's
hop on over to the big ass fans hotline and
see what when Littleton has to say, good morning Littleton
when he got forced.
Speaker 3 (23:48):
Hey, what's up? Adoe? Very Jack and Bow just called
in and check in. Has been a while since I
call it in and I just wanted to touch base.
I know it's a lot of move went with NI
lack back pay for student athletes and this that and
the third and I really agree. I really think that
it's a problem that student athletes work to get paid.
(24:11):
H I mean, and we know when we play ball,
I mean I felt like that we were we were
better than just getting meal money and tell grant money.
You know, if I had every if I if I
ever had a dollar for every day that we field
up in my two to three years a lot of
career wise, shoot, I'll be I'll be very really really smiling.
Speaker 7 (24:31):
Right now, you know.
Speaker 3 (24:32):
But I just don't want to just hope that you know,
even with that said, you know, for student athletes and
competing at all levels and that they cannot forget you
know what why why what they cannot forget their why?
You know, and the why is it's what made you
love the game from the beginning. You know, make sure
(24:55):
that you continue to play the game, uh at all
levels because of what reason why you fell in love
with it, you know, the passion forward and being able
to give the sacrifice forward and you're playing for your
teammates and then also ultimately given everything you've got to compete.
(25:17):
You know, you don't you don't want to lose that
site because that's what's going to keep you going. You
don't want to let money run the whole show as
far as why you're doing it, you know, you want
to definitely have that love for the game because that's
what's going to keep you, uh, working out, that's going
to keep you training, that's going to keep you driving
to be be great, you know. And I just hope
(25:39):
that as a student athlete tet move forward and college,
high school and college, that they continue to be able
to stay in love with stay in love with the why,
you know, and all the other things to work and
stuff out, you know. And I'm trying to teaching my
son that right now as we're going through camps and
things of that nature. Is last year going through college,
going through college cas what different going on different campuses
(26:01):
and games of that nature. And I'm always trying to
test him son, Elijah, trying to test him and make
sure he understands, you know, why are you doing it?
You know you're not doing it for me. You gotta
do it for yourself. Of course, you got to know
what's going to keep you driving to be your continue
to be great and work hard to be great. So
that's that's important.
Speaker 1 (26:21):
Well, L team might be a little too late for that.
And I'm gonna ask you a question why I got
you on here because our football team, our football team,
I think, has had some people playing for the wrong reasons.
I can't say whatever it's wrong. Everybody has their reason,
like you said, everybody has a different why. But our
(26:41):
football team expectations at an all time low, even lower
than when you played.
Speaker 3 (26:47):
Well dang like that? Yeah like that. I mean, heck
we have we have some really good teams, but just
couldn't get over the hunk of times there.
Speaker 1 (27:03):
That is true. No, that is true. That is true,
But no kind of what do you think about the well,
you know, like I guess the expectation of the state
of football right now, coming from where it was twelve
years ago, or let's say eight years ago to now,
and from where it was back in nineteen mid nineteen nineties.
Speaker 3 (27:21):
Yeah, oh, you know, the resources. I think the resources
have helped out a lot. You know, the resources that
the kids have now to be to be able to
help themselves individually, be good alongside as a team. It
was we there had better resources then than they had
when I was coming through myself. But of course during
(27:45):
that time, Peroi, you're talking about the early years of
twenty thirty and forties and fifties, et cetera. You know
those guys competing wise, you know they they were just
as locked in and dedicated as just that the resources,
the resources at times wasn't there to be able to
help them individually continue to be great. And a lot
(28:06):
of the guys, those guys did go on and play
pro ball. But I think the resources will allow this
generation to be able to be on a whole new platform.
The landscape of it a college athlete, college football, I
believe continues to improve. The kids are getting bigger. You know,
the stakes are higher. You know, a competition is again
(28:31):
it continues to be able to even out at times.
But you can see the difference with different levels as
you go P four, P five. Kids they built different
you know now what I can say that's more physical features,
but you could never judge a kid by their feature.
You don't really know what they have inside.
Speaker 5 (28:49):
It is.
Speaker 3 (28:49):
You can take a fix through sixty three guy and
be two hundred and twenty pounds and look like a
Greek god, and you know, and party look like Tarzan,
played like Jane because it's not and what what? Because
of what the ticker doesn't have, so you still have
that factor even though the kids are a lot more uh,
I guess I would say a lot more advanced in
(29:10):
in in the athletic pieces of it, because the trains
and things of that nature. But you're still the heart
of an athlete. The heart of a football player is
what you have to see as they put on the field.
So I don't think that ever changes your desires and
your heart and what you got inside of you, but
the features has changed a lot.
Speaker 1 (29:30):
Okay, Well, hopefully answers your question. Yeah, good man. It's
always good to hear from you though, man, always absolutely.
Speaker 3 (29:38):
And I mean I've been I've been a little low
getting contact with you guys. But between you know, finishing
up school as the principal and with my staff and
you know, to getting my son all around places here
and the area, I tendn't get caught up and uh
doing those things. But I still got love for you guys,
y'all know that. Well, I'll pop I'll starry by popping
in every now and again. As to getting closer to
(29:58):
the big season, because hey, Anthony, we never I could
just be able to know as football season by the
type out the smell of what's going on and you
know the landscape. So football season is back, and I'm
happier for sure, because that's what I personally. That was
my life from a little kid all the way up
(30:22):
as as trying to make the pro ball so and
I was dedicated to the game and I didn't I
try my best not to cheat the game at all
because I trained my ass on seize my language. But
that's what it was. So but I'm happy with that and.
Speaker 4 (30:36):
Little That's one of the many reasons you belong to
the Kentucky as School Athletic Association Hall of Fame, while
we also to have Anthony White and the UK.
Speaker 5 (30:44):
Athletics Hall of Fame. I'm gonna keep banging the drum
for both levels.
Speaker 3 (30:48):
Well, Larry, I appreciate that, uh. And you're a good friend,
and I appreciate your acknowledgements. And you know, hopefully they'll
they'll see that one day. I mean, they can't judge that.
They cannot really you can only see what you've done. Uh.
And I know that my time he just will come.
So we'll be patient and move forward. But I'll continue
to be able to force the bearers of success and
(31:11):
also challenging people all so I'm just doing it. I'm
just challenging people in a different way now, but the
driver is still the same. So just not able to
play that game like it used to appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (31:23):
Larry well White definitely, well man, we appreciate your call.
Speaker 5 (31:29):
Man.
Speaker 1 (31:29):
We're gonna, uh, like I said, talk to you next
time we get a chance to talk to you.
Speaker 3 (31:36):
All right, man, take your each brood.
Speaker 1 (31:38):
I have good Larry Vought, Uh little just said, is
it smells like this time of season is football season.
We talked about this for the past couple of weeks
that we know it's football season because the calendar says it.
And uh, it's just that time of Yeah, the summer,
(31:59):
guys getting on cares you know, guys are you know,
ramping up, You're ready to go for the fall. But
just from the news, the smell in the air and
everything else, it may not seem like football Seace. I
got some good news for you though, Larry Vaught, Oh good.
I don't think and this is just going for the
people that I talked to you. I don't think our
(32:20):
football team. I'm not gonna jump on no bandwagons or nothing.
But what I'm hearing from the coaches they feel really
good at certain positions that I thought we were strong
at last year. The coaches feel better than they felt
last year because of the guys focus, the guy's commitment,
and those type of things. So I'm glad they're quiet,
(32:42):
but I'm glad they're happy what's going on in their rooms.
So there is that portion of it when you're saying
we don't know who the players are, and that's fine
because nobody needs. Like I told you, I've always been
a Penn State fan. We don't have logo, we don't
have no names on the back of the jersey. All
we got is the blue stripe down the middle and
just for number on the front and back of your jersey,
and not a lot of thrills and frills. So hopefully
(33:04):
that might make you feel a little bit better. Maybe
the quiet is people are doing their work in silence,
but there's being said at certain positions that the coaches
feel better about their rooms because the guy's commitment in there.
They're not certain that they had the same commitment even
with better talent. They're not certain. But some of these
guys may be more talented, and I think the motor
(33:26):
is going to make up for if there wasn't talent
or you being very talented and you not having a motor.
So you could take that well and not report it,
but you can take it.
Speaker 4 (33:39):
And I think a lot of Kentucky fans if they
feel the energy level and the commitment and the effort
is better, then and maybe the result results on the
scoreboard still on exactly what you want, but if you
feel like when you leave that stadium that I can say, Man,
I looked out there at that Anthony White and Craig Geese,
Kimksay played their butts on, did everything they could, just
(34:02):
didn't quite win.
Speaker 5 (34:02):
Today. I can go home and live with that, because
there's gonna be one win and one lose in every game.
I can live with that.
Speaker 4 (34:09):
I just think the majority of UK fans did not
always feel like they were seen maximum effort last.
Speaker 1 (34:14):
Year, and that I think is why the coaches are
confident and that's why I'm starting to get a little
giddy for football season. Nope, I'm not saying six wins,
but I'm like you, I just want to see the
effort and if we lose with the effort, like little
Towards said, earlier. Sometimes the ball just didn't bounce the
way you wanted it to. So if that happens, I'll
take it. You know what else I'll take. I'll take
(34:35):
a break, and when we come back, we'll conclude this show.
If you're listening to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk
on news radio six thirty WLP, this is the home
of the Wildcats, six thirty WLAP. Welcome back Stockyards Bank
Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I'm Anthony White along with Larry Vaught.
(34:58):
Larry Vaught. Before we get to the big Ass Fans
hotline really quickly because we ain't got a whole lot
of time left. There's a big ass bourbon tasting at
Lex Live on Wednesday, June eleventh, from five to nine pm.
There will be celebrity guests, maybe some people you may know, Larry.
Some people don't consider themselves celebrities, but they are supposed
(35:20):
to be celebrity guests. They're gonna have over two thousand
they're looking to break the bourbon tasting record, which I
think is like twenty three hundred people. You can get
tickets at two fifty lex dot com. They're twenty eight dollars.
Because now you gotta pay service fees. There's actually twenty
five dollars, but with the fees it's twenty eight fifty two.
(35:41):
If you go in there and get a ticket from
five to nine at Lex Live on Wednesday the eleventh,
and there will be said celebrities.
Speaker 3 (35:50):
There will be.
Speaker 1 (35:54):
Linda Gordon will be there, free parking.
Speaker 5 (36:00):
And you just go in and drink bourbon for three hours.
Speaker 1 (36:03):
Uh well yeah, yeah, that's like fun Live music, fun
or divorce.
Speaker 5 (36:09):
That's like Anthony White will be there.
Speaker 1 (36:11):
I might be there, man, I may. I may pretty
much be there, but I do have a podcast.
Speaker 5 (36:16):
To do that same podcast Wednesday night.
Speaker 1 (36:19):
Now, now there's a bourbon tasting during my podcast too,
so that ain't that don't change nothing. Just have to
make sure we get uber home in time to get
the podcast on.
Speaker 5 (36:30):
Okay, okay, let me get over here really.
Speaker 1 (36:33):
Quickly, man, get to the big ass fans hotline and
get Dennis on really quickly. What up, Dennis? What you
got for us?
Speaker 8 (36:40):
Hey, guys, I just missed the first part of the
show because of church. But uh here, I just heard
y'all talking here about Iron Ago about uh the nil
the Kentucky's gonna donate's gonna get twelve or thirteen millions
of the football team while the rest of the SEC
is gonna get mellion.
Speaker 3 (37:00):
Is that correct?
Speaker 7 (37:02):
No?
Speaker 1 (37:02):
I thought that Texas A and M. I know Texas
A and M, for for instance, was supposed to get
twenty two million, and I thought their football team was
getting sixteen or seventeen million of that. Then basketball was
getting another large chunk, maybe three or four, and then
the other two or three will be spread on amongst
the other sports. Larry Vault seems to think that's sixteen
and I think sixteen. But Jack Pilgrim said it was
(37:23):
twenty million. So if it was twenty million, I didn't
think football was gonna get sixteen. But at twenty two million,
I thought football would get fifteen or sixteen.
Speaker 8 (37:32):
Well, I'll tell you what, as a season ticket holder
for UK football is ninety eight if Mitch Bonhardt and
the people here don't give us the percentage that the
rest of the SEC is going to give them football
because for a basketball program, I will give up my
season ticket so quick to make it. Well, I'm I'm
not going to continue to support a program that doesn't
(37:54):
get the financial support that the rest is SEC teams
is gonna give it footballs because football is king and
the SEC.
Speaker 3 (38:02):
Whether UK basketball.
Speaker 1 (38:04):
Fans like it or not, Oh, I have no doubt
that we are going to I definitely think we're gonna
get a I definitely think we're gonna get but we're
gonna get the same percentage everybody else is gonna get.
I absolutely believe that, because that's where your biggest revenue
is gonna come. We got to have butts in the seat,
so we have to allocate more money to football, so
the butts are in the seat so we can get
the revenue to continue to keep paying our employees. But
(38:26):
thank you for the call, Dennis, Larry Varde. You agree
with me or not, or you with Dennis that you
think is the possibility that we won't divvy up just
like everybody else.
Speaker 4 (38:36):
I think it's a great possibility they will not divvy
up like everybody else. I think it's a really difficult
decision and mark that it's Barnhart has to make because,
as Dennis says, if you've got a football team that's
struggling to try to get to the higher level and
then suddenly you don't give them the same resource as
everybody else.
Speaker 5 (38:54):
That's tough. But if you don't give your basketball more,
maybe your basketball doesn't stay on top. So I don't
know how that's gonna work out. Way over my head.
Speaker 1 (39:01):
That's a conversation for another day, and that is Larry Vaught.
Thank Larry Vaught, Thanks to Jack Pilgrim, Thanks to Bo
Robinson for keeping us on air, Thanks for Walter Hawthorne
for joining us, and Clayton Gilroy Gillery for joining us.
