Speaker 1 (00:01):
This is the home of the Wildcats. Six thirtylap.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Welcome back to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk, which
is coming to you from the Clark's Pumpet Shop studio
in downtown Lexington. Return refreshing refuel at Clark's and sign
up for the Loyalty Rewards program to get discounts on
fuel and more great deals. And remember, just a few
weeks ago somebody about that two hundred million dollar winning
lottery ticket at a Clark's Pumpet shop, So may be
(00:30):
worth your while to go in there and just give
it a try yourself. So but again, I'm Larry Valut
sitting in the big chair in place of Anthony White
this morning so he can spend Mother's Day with his bomb,
which is what he ought to be doing. But we
had Jack. Anthony brought up the question earlier about Rachel
Lawson and the softball team did not have a great
(00:51):
season this year, probably on the bubble at best to
make the NCAA tournament. Wanting to know if she will
be on the hot seat or her status will be
okay for next season.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
Well, what do you think?
Speaker 4 (01:08):
That is a tough one. I know you just got
to think how much good will she's built and the
program and the culture she established in Lexington, would at
least give her another shot and and you know, just
to you know, rebuild some of that momentum and and.
Speaker 5 (01:24):
Kind of uh just.
Speaker 4 (01:28):
Write the ship after you know, obviously a very difficult season.
You know, I feel for her because you know, when
you have done so much good and and you know,
we've we've seen this with some of the some of
the other high profile coaches at Kentucky, where you know,
even all the good will you can build up, just
see a few a few speed bumps can can kind
(01:49):
of make things come crashing down a little bit. So, uh,
I'm personally rooting for her. You know, she she's obviously
a friend of the show and it has been on
several times, and we obviously love her. So I'm certainly
hoping that that she's able to get another shot and
you know, turn turn things around. But I know, you know, Mitch,
Mitch has to do what's best for the athletics department,
(02:11):
and you know, so that's that's ultimately his call. And
I do not end the being in hissues, That's that's
for sure.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Well, the team went twenty nine and twenty six this year,
Anthony seven and seventeen in conference play. I think, yes,
I think she will be back. I think Mitch will
give her another change. I think Rachel was pretty honest
about going into this season what it was going to
be like. I think the softball has kind of struggle
to adjust to the nil level.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
And again I'm not on the inside the know.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
Maybe it's not all their fault. You've got you've got
to have dollars to be able to adjust, and how
many dollars they've got to work with. I don't know
any of that, but I do think I do think
that Mitch will give her another chance. Remember just a
few years ago that Nick Minjion was kind of on
the on the bubble about whether he would be back
or I'm Mitch stuck with him and he took Kentucky's
the College World Series. So I think she will be back.
(03:05):
I don't know if you're feeling different or not, Anthony.
Speaker 6 (03:09):
Oh no, I definitely think she'll be back. I was
just saying, how much heat is gonna be on h
and you absolutely right?
Speaker 5 (03:15):
You. I think you and Jack are both right.
Speaker 6 (03:17):
I do feel as if she's built the culture here.
Speaker 5 (03:22):
I will say this. As much as I love her.
Speaker 6 (03:25):
As much as I love her, I'm not sure I'm
envious of the nil era and the money raising era.
I'm not sure she really takes a grasp of it.
And I think that's what some of her preseason comments
were based off of. I'm paying nobody to play for me,
and everybody keeps saying you should get into coaching. I'm
not getting into coaching because I'm not kissing no kids' asses,
(03:46):
So I'm not.
Speaker 5 (03:48):
I can't do I can't do that. Now.
Speaker 6 (03:50):
I can tell you you need to do this, this,
and this to be good, or I think you're good
at this, but you need to work on this. But
nowadays a kid can tell me, and I know they've
told the coaches, because I know coaches. You can't tell
me what to do. And I'm talking about high paid coaches, Larry,
I'm not. I'm not putting up with that abuse. I
had to put up with abuse as a player. I'm
not putting it up with it as a coach. But
(04:11):
I'm This is not a knock on Rachel at all.
Speaker 5 (04:14):
And Jack.
Speaker 6 (04:14):
I think Jack said it perfectly that you know she's
built a culture, she's invested some things into the uh
to the fabric of UK.
Speaker 5 (04:21):
Softball that I think the fans and Nick are.
Speaker 6 (04:27):
Barnhart, will you know kind of you know, kind of
know we you know, we gotta start from scratch if
we get But then again, Larry, we had a coach
in basketball that did all the fund raising, it did
everything else you had to do, and the winning wasn't
there and that wasn't enough for them. So but no,
I do think Rachel's bought herself some time. I was
(04:49):
just saying, I think she has a plan and then
and when you have a plan, it may take two
or three years. So if we have another mediocre to
miss level year and a tough conference, is she gonna
give another year?
Speaker 5 (05:03):
I'm not questioning it. Next year. She'd absolutely come back
next year. She deserves to.
Speaker 6 (05:08):
But are they gonna give her time to implement what
she's trying to do? And is she gonna maybe give
in a little bit to the nil era?
Speaker 3 (05:16):
Yeah, I think she's got to do that. Again.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
How much money she's got to get into it though.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
Is what I don't know.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
And we will see how everything shakes out over the
next few months, and I'll with that, I did want
to mention when we were talking UK women's basketball, I'd
mentioned a few weeks ago that I thought there might
be some good news coming out for Cassidy Rowe soon.
I've had several people ask me if the good news
is not happening. No, I think it's just taken it
a little bit longer to get worked out. But I
(05:43):
think there's gonna be some good news that people will
enjoy hearing about Cassidy Rowe's future still coming out in
the next couple of weeks. So it's not that it
just taken a little longer to get some things worked
out than what originally anticipated.
Speaker 6 (06:00):
Larry, you said that a couple of weeks. I'm still
interested in that. But I did want to comment on
that as well when you asked Jack, and Jack said
that he doesn't think that.
Speaker 5 (06:08):
The recruiting.
Speaker 6 (06:11):
Or will recruit say effects what happens with the coaches,
and I rarely disagree with Jack over the past couple
of years. In the beginning, I agree, I disagree with
him a lot because he had hot taps and I'm
not a hot tape person. I need all the facts
unless he's gonna give me. But I talked to him
behind the scenes, and he told me what he knew.
Speaker 5 (06:28):
So, but.
Speaker 6 (06:30):
As probably the only person on this show that has
been recruited, I do think so I told you I
was raised up a big ten kid. All the teams
I've renamed you that I was interested in were big ten.
Ray Dorr was the reason I came to Kentucky. Him personally,
he had handwritten letters. We had a great communication, and
he you know, he pronounced me a lot of stuff.
Speaker 5 (06:49):
It didn't happen.
Speaker 6 (06:50):
But I mean, I don't think it was because of him,
because elia Us Lack Larry Vaught recruited me heavily at
Colorado before he even came to Kentucky. So with Jeff
is he doesn't think that the Kentucky And these are
the problems with Jack's statement that I have.
Speaker 5 (07:10):
Rich Brooks is new to Kentucky.
Speaker 6 (07:12):
He's new to the SEC so he has no fabric
in the conference, he has no fabric in the community.
He's build a fabric. But that's why I was asking
the question. I asked, because how strong is the fabric
he built? Considering these recruiting questions that people are asking,
and Eastern Kentucky is having a whole uproar about and
that's a probably a good percentage for our fan base.
(07:36):
So nationally, he says, maybe not. But if Anthony White
wants to leave the Big ten and come to the SEC,
I'm gonna ask somebody who played in the SEC. I'm
not gonna ask the people who are happy. When I
came here, Larry Vaught, I didn't even know who More
Williams was. I had to do some research and he's
two years older than me, so he had already been
(07:56):
there two years, but he had played as a freshman
and a sophomore, and I didn't know who he was
just because I didn't follow SEC football well.
Speaker 5 (08:05):
I followed the big names.
Speaker 6 (08:06):
Kentucky wasn't a big name, so when so, I understand
what Jack is saying, But I'm telling you, as a
person who has been recruited outside of your knowledge base,
the two scenarios I have is that Kenny Brooks he's
proven he can win, He's proven he's a great coach.
He proved he's proven he cares about the players. So
(08:28):
if you want to play for a coach that I'm
gonna get the best out of here, that's fine. But
if you gonna leave uproot yourself from whatever reason of
the map you live in, and you're a top tier player,
and I gonna goater if they may reach out to
a player that is discrumbled or unhappy. And that's why
I'm waiting for you to break this news. You need
to break so Kenny Brooks can get back to recruiting.
Speaker 5 (08:49):
But that's what But some.
Speaker 6 (08:53):
Of that's lighthearted, but the reality of it is, Honestly,
I do think it does play a little bit. Maybe
not a big row Jack sounded as if it didn't
pla it definitely plays a role because if you're not
on my map and Kenny Brooks called me, I'm not
gonna call all the players that were happy.
Speaker 5 (09:06):
Just like when Kyra Elsey was here and she benched
Ryan Howard.
Speaker 6 (09:12):
Ryan Howard could be a stand up person and say,
you know I was wrong, she did the right thing.
You know I was wrong, and that season went well
or good enough. But then you get the ones who say, no,
they so terrible, that da da da. And I think
that's what uh And I think that's why we lost
some football players as well.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
Yeah, I think it's always hard. Yeah, I think it's
always hard to know. I think some different. Everything impacts recruiting.
I think now money talks a lot about recruiting, maybe
more than just about anything out there. But this is
one of these cases with the basketball. I do know
the women's basketball I would think certainly needs another big
(09:51):
going into next season. That's why I would think they're
probably not done recruiting, that they're hoping to add somebody else.
And where they'll add them from, I don't know, but
I do think they definitely need to add another big,
just like we definitely need to go ahead and take
a break right here now. Reminder of this hour, Sunday
Morning Sports Talk is brought to you by Country Boy Brewing.
(10:11):
So stay with us and we'll be back here on
Sunday Morning Sports Talk on news radio six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
This is the home of the Wildcats, six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
I'm kind of just spellbound that Bow's playing one of
my favorite songs right here. Mama said, knock you out.
That's good. Well, this is one of my all time favorites.
It's all I would all I would say right there,
and also.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
Thank you for that bowl.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
Not quite the whilll Aye, but I'll roll with that, okay.
So but Welcome back to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning's Sports Talk.
I appreciate all of you being with us today on
Mother's Day, and if you'd like to join us on
the Big As Fans Hotline, you can call us at
eight five nine two eight oh two two eight seven.
Jack is our last segment with you, and I wanted
(11:00):
to just talk a little bit about the tvt It's
still a couple of months away, but the Harrison Twins
did a zoom Friday. I didn't I was traveling, didn't
get to be on it live. I got to go
back and watch and listen to all of it. I
think they're even more excited. It sounds like what they
were last year when they came to play in it
for the first time. I think there seem even more
(11:21):
pumped up about coming back for another run of the TBT.
Speaker 5 (11:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (11:27):
I think a lot of it is just the uncertainty
of you know, what am I signing up for? Is
that you know, what's the legitimacy of the event. Will
fans be there to support, Like when you commit to
something like this and you know they're busy and traveling
overseas and playing overseas, that you know is it worth?
Is the juice worth that squeezed by by you know,
(11:47):
being being a participant and you know, joining it. So
I think there was some some uncertainty last season and
seeing the success of it and just the fan support
and that moment Readham Hall where there's fifteen thousand fans
in attendance rooting, you know, seriously for them and seriously
against them. I think it kind of lit that spark
(12:11):
again and you know, kind of poured gasoline on that
fire that maybe I had been missing for quite some time.
I thought it was really fascinating the Harrison Twins. I
asked Aaron especially about just following the team last year
and how close he was in just following Mark Pope's debut,
and he said that he was actually closer to this
(12:31):
last year's team than he has basically since he left
Lexington the first time around, just because he was in
town and did compete against them in practice and you
know kind of got to interact with the coaches and
the players and all that. So I thought that part
was just fascinating that, you know, he said that he
felt kind of a bond and a connection to the
program that he really hadn't felt in the last decade
(12:54):
despite the coaching change. So yeah, I think TVT is
an overwhelming success. And except to see some of the
other names that pop up and join the roster here
in the next couple of weeks.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
Yeah, same here, and we will have Britney Harris for
the from the TVT LA Familia PR team will be
on with us in a couple of weeks like she
was last year. Anthony be able to share a little
bit more information on maybe some of the things that
will go on leaving up to the to the actual tournament,
with what fans might be able to interact with players,
maybe some other players on.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
The team at all.
Speaker 2 (13:25):
But I think we enjoyed having her on with us
last year and looking forward to that again. But I
think I've talked to a lot of people who are
really excited about the TVT already. Anthony, Yeah, I think
it is.
Speaker 6 (13:40):
And just because it's Mother's Day, I'm gonna relate it
to and I know I don't want to, you know,
make you emotional or sensitive or anything, but it's that's
that's that kind of the way you feel. Everything you
relate Mother's Day to now is living it through someone
else or one last opportunity to have that feeling. That's
what That's what it is for Big Blue Nation, no
(14:00):
matter what, no matter what activity it is, our fan
base is so large and large large that you know,
just one last time, I don't care if I don't
care if I'm seventy years old, if I can get
out there, and you know, that's why.
Speaker 5 (14:13):
We see those videos of older people doing those things.
Speaker 6 (14:16):
So I think is the fact that their career with
Kentucky is over, and you know, there's a our fan
base can move on to all these players because we
put players in the NBA so frequently that they could
forget about you.
Speaker 5 (14:28):
The opportunity that these.
Speaker 6 (14:29):
Guys get to come back and hear the people cheering
for them, get the push and shove against Louisville and
all that. Man, that makes for an exciting environment. Man,
it gives you one last time, and that one last
time as many.
Speaker 5 (14:39):
Times as last time keep happening. I think they'll appreciate
the Larry, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (14:46):
You're right, because I would love to have one last
time to go back and hug my mom and everything
like that. I thought a lot of things about what
went on in the in the final period with her
a lot of things you think back in look do different,
or maybe wish you could do again. And also, if
you've got a mom that's still with you, hugger up
not only today, but hugger up every day because you
(15:07):
never know.
Speaker 3 (15:08):
When that might end or anything.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
But Jack one thing about the TBT I do. I
am a little diss. I was disappointed that the fans
in Louisville bought up four thousand tickets quicker than the
fans and Lexington did, which means Louisville would get home
court advantage if both teams advance. But I think that
may have been a little bit of an unfair advantage.
I got a feeling the TBT was kind of hoping
(15:33):
that Louisville would do that because it's got the larger
arena where Kentucky is going to be playing in Memorial
Coliseum this year. And I didn't realize that tickets for
the TBT in Louisville went on sale a day earlier
than what they did in Lexington. And also that maybe
there's a couple of the large donors or businesses that
brought up a big block of tickets to helped Louisville
(15:54):
get to that four thousand so quick.
Speaker 4 (15:58):
Well, this is a fan base that had to you know,
sell their tickets at Sam's Club and gave them away
at uh the Planet Fitness. And I mean that we're
we're used to these types of ridiculous rigged promos for
for for this the opposing fan base of Brad, so
we we should be used to their shenanigans at this point.
And uh, it's okay, you know, we we saw what
(16:20):
happened the last time around. We went into their venue
and and uh made them you know, had had all
the warm and fuzzy feelings of all Russ Smith and
Peyton Steeville, all our our all of our most beloved
cardinals are back and we got to embarrass them on
their own home floor. So I'm very excited to be
able to do that again. I wish that we got
(16:41):
the chance to hosted a memorial Coliseum, but it's okay,
we'll we'll get our our say in the matter, and
then we'll see what happens the summer.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
Well, it's one of the Harrison says Louisville still nice
to get there, So we'll see what happens. Maybe they
won't advance that far and something will happen, But if
it does, I think it'll be for a fun July
Day again, just like what it was last year when
all of us had so much fun watching the TVT team.
And right now we still know the Harrison's are on there, Willie,
Kelly Stein, Dron Lamb, and DeAndre Liggans, so as we
(17:15):
should have several more players coming out of the next
couple of weeks and that should be fun to kind
of see any guess who you think they might add.
Speaker 4 (17:23):
Jack, I don't know. I know they were kind of
flirting and wanting to, you know, just pry with John
Walling to Marcus Cousins and see how they're doing and
if they could kind of you know, swing that home
run and pull off that home run. So we'll see
if they pull that one off. But I know they've
been hyping it up internally about some of the guys
(17:44):
they've been able to pull off, and you know, continue
to push and pry and hope that they commit to it.
So I am very very confident that it's gonna be
a competitive field and we'll be able to put together
a team capable of winning the.
Speaker 2 (17:59):
Whole Well, speaking of commits, when we come back from break,
We're going to have quarterback DJ Hunter out of Knoxville,
a sophomore who has committed to play his college football
at the University of Kentucky. He's going to be joining
us to talk about that and a little bit about
what he likes so much about Kentucky. He's also coming
off a knee injury, and I'll kind of update this
(18:20):
on what the status is for him and what this
next season looks like. So stay with us here on
Sunday Morning Sports Talk Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk
on News Radio six point thirty WLAP, and enjoy the
music as we go to break.
Speaker 1 (18:35):
This is the home of the Wildcats. Six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
Welcome back to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk, coming
to you from the Clark's Pumping Shop studio. And again
a reminder of this hour, Sunday Morning Sports Talk is
brought to you by Country Boy Brewing. And now we're
very pleased to be joined by quarterback DJ Hunter of Knoxville,
a recent University of Kentucky football commit, even though he
(19:00):
is only a sophomore. So Dj, thank you for joining
us today on Mother's Day. Just kind of tell folks
a little bit about about yourself and then why you
decided to go ahead and commit so early to the
University of Kentucky.
Speaker 7 (19:17):
So I was actually so, I was born in Lexington, Kentucky.
I stayed there. My dad he played basketball in Eastern Kentucky.
So he met my mama at Richmond. He ended up
going back to Memphis. I think it was a oh nine.
He went to go playing Southwest Tennessee Community College, and
(19:41):
then he transferred to Central Missouri for his last year,
and after he got done playing basketball, we moved back
to Memphis. We stayed there until I was going into
my freshman year. We ended up moving there for Mississippi.
I played there my freshman year, and then I moved
(20:01):
to Knoxville, Tennessee my sophomore year. So it's been a
kind of a journey for me. So I ended up
committing to Kentucky because like that, like my family's up there.
I got family up there. I could tell they really
wanted me up there. The coaches, they're good people. The
(20:21):
recruited me pretty hard. They wanted me to come up there.
You know, I just loved the school.
Speaker 3 (20:27):
I loved Kentucky and for folks, So you talked about.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
As a freshman at in Mississippi. There at Horn Lake,
you passed for one hundred and thirty five yards and
ten touchdowns. And then as a sophomore last year, you
completed fifty three percent of your passes for one thousand
and four and thirty one yards and nine touchdowns. Also
ran for three touchdowns. But that was all and only
what eight games? What at what point of the season
(20:51):
did you get injured?
Speaker 7 (20:54):
Uh? So, at first this season, I got hurt the
second game of the season, I am up spraying my
I ended up spraining my ac joints. So I was
out for three games, and then I came back, and
the same game that I came back, I ended up
spraining my ankle. But I played the rest of the game.
But I ended up happening to sit the next week
(21:14):
after that, and then I played the final two games
of the season, and then at the end of the season,
the very last game in the quarterfinals of the state playoffs,
I end up tearing my cl in my meniscus.
Speaker 2 (21:31):
And so you've had had surgery on that. How is
that kind of progressing and what's the kind of timeline
for getting released where you can start doing some work
and stuff.
Speaker 7 (21:42):
So I ended up getting surgery in January. So I'm
like four months from surgery.
Speaker 5 (21:49):
Uh, right now.
Speaker 7 (21:50):
I started. I started back throwing two weeks ago, so
I've been throwing. Kentucky came up to see me throw Friday.
But the time one for me. I'll be back for
for for for full contact, like late July before the
season starts. But I'll be back like moving around, running
(22:13):
around and stuff like that like late June. In the
early July.
Speaker 2 (22:17):
Well, well, I'm sorry you won't have my co host
Anthony White to throw to when you come up here,
because when he was playing, he caught everything anybody ever
threw to him. So Anthony talked a little bit to DJ.
Speaker 6 (22:30):
No, you were absolutely right, because if you don't catch
the ball, you don't stay on the field. If you
become the quarterback's best friend or they're protection. That's hey,
that release valve. Hey, hey, DJ, that's where it's at.
I did want to ask you because I did coach
a little league football up here for a while.
Speaker 5 (22:45):
What did you play Parker res and Uh in Lexington?
Speaker 7 (22:50):
No, I didn't. I didn't. I just start playing little
league football until I got back to mephis and I
stayed there.
Speaker 5 (22:56):
Oh okay uh.
Speaker 6 (22:58):
And I also had also have arthroscopic or meniscus surgery.
It was something I felt was ailing me just a
little bit every now and then it would hurt. And
then when they did the m they found out did
you have a serious, a serious meniscus problem or was
it just one of those little ones that I irritate.
Speaker 7 (23:20):
I ended up like they had to end up going
back and stitching up both of my meniscus.
Speaker 2 (23:26):
So sounds serious, sounds painful.
Speaker 7 (23:34):
Yeah, I ended up tearing my a cl and they
said they had to stitch up both sides of my miniscus.
Speaker 6 (23:42):
And coming from, like I said, being from Lextony, your
family's all involved, and I think the quarterback position at
something where we need help. By the time you get her,
everybody on a roster now will either be a senior
and you'll be next in line. What are you looking
forward to as far as coming here and in playing
at the university take around your family?
Speaker 2 (24:03):
Is that?
Speaker 7 (24:04):
Uh? You know, it would be a great experience coming
up to Lixton and playing in front of all my family.
I just want to come down there and compete for
a starting.
Speaker 2 (24:13):
Job and and and one of those family members, Anthony
is ty Bryant. Who's your cousin. Have you had a
chance to talk a lot with Tye about the University
Kentucky football yet?
Speaker 3 (24:23):
DJ?
Speaker 7 (24:24):
Yeah. When I when I was up there for my
a couple of visits, I stayed with him for a
little bit. We went out to some places. He took
me around and we were just talking about Kentuck's football.
Speaker 2 (24:37):
And I've seen some people that kind of refer to
you as a as a jewel threat type of quarterback.
Do you is that accurate? Or you feel like you're
more of a passer than a runner. You feel you
kind of do both equally.
Speaker 7 (24:48):
Well, I feel like I'm more of a pastor, but
I can I can really run if I really need to,
But I feel like I'm a pastor.
Speaker 6 (25:02):
I don't go ahead, Anthony, No, I said, I'm with Larry.
I really don't want to know anybody to pigeonhole you on.
You know what your game is. If you if you're
a runner, you're running. I think just as a quarterback position,
you are a passer. If you have to run, you run.
Speaker 5 (25:18):
We have to run. Are you a run first option?
Speaker 6 (25:21):
It sounds like you, you would like to you would
like to pass, but uh, if there's an opportunity to
run or if you have to run, that's your last option.
Speaker 5 (25:29):
You run.
Speaker 7 (25:31):
Yeah, Like, if I have the opportunity to run, I'm
going to take it. But like if it's not like
number one priority, I'm a pass first quarterback, so I'm
looking to pass all the time. But if there's an
opportunity to run, I will take it.
Speaker 6 (25:49):
And I'm curious just because we've had some stuff, just
because the quarterbacks, we've had different quarterbacks in the past
couple of years. We would all love Larry Vault myself
love some continuity. So you committed as a sophomore. I
love to see you stay here three years until three
years only because you're only elvis able to go to
the NFL after three years. But uh, what is what
(26:10):
is the visit like with the coaches as far as
like the quarterback coach of offensive coordinator.
Speaker 5 (26:16):
I know it's certain positions. It's all football talk.
Speaker 6 (26:19):
You know, if you if you ever watch John Gruden
break down like the NFL quarterbacks when they're coming to
the NFL.
Speaker 5 (26:24):
Is it something like.
Speaker 6 (26:25):
That or is it just seeing your personality? You know,
seeing what type of guy you are.
Speaker 7 (26:31):
It's kind of like that. It's kind of like what
John Grutin does, but they want to see like the
type of person I am, not what my personality is.
Speaker 2 (26:42):
DJ just wondering a little bit. You talked about you
have a lot of a lot of family members here
in Lexington, in Kentucky. There's been some speculation there might
be chance to since you're committed to Kentucky, now we
might see you playing high school football in Kentucky sometime
in a future. Sure is that a legitimate possibility or
(27:04):
is that just some idle speculation going around.
Speaker 7 (27:08):
Uh, it's a possibility.
Speaker 4 (27:09):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (27:09):
Me and my family are still trying to get some
things figured out and like what are we going to
do for my junior year?
Speaker 2 (27:17):
Okay, so that's something that probably will be decided in
the next month or two then, because you still got plenty.
Speaker 3 (27:22):
Of time obviously.
Speaker 7 (27:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (27:24):
Yeah, Is that something you think you would like or
or you just kind of open whatever Mom and dad
say that's what you'll do.
Speaker 7 (27:33):
I like the idea the family in Lexington and being
able to be closer to Kentucky University.
Speaker 6 (27:43):
And do you my cut question. I'm from Ohio, I'm
gonna be honest with you, DJ. We played a good
brand of football up there. I was one of the coldest,
you one of the coldest. You feel like where you're
at now is gonna challenge you more? Or do you say,
I know it may just be family decisions. You're too
young to be really make a household decisions unless you
(28:05):
want to live out of your own and tell your
mother when you talk to me, and Larry said Happy
Mother's Day because it's his Mother's Day. But do you
feel like do you feel like the challenge would be
tougher where you are now?
Speaker 5 (28:15):
Or uh?
Speaker 6 (28:16):
You know, if if the opportunity comes to you to
play in Lexton, for you to play in Lexington.
Speaker 7 (28:22):
Uh, I think it would be a pretty I think
it would be a pretty equal uh love well competition.
Speaker 2 (28:31):
So kind of what do you what do you have
planning for for the summer. I mean, obviously you've got
your college choice spades. There's not a lot of camps
you think you need to be going through your knees
gonna kind of limit.
Speaker 3 (28:42):
What you can do.
Speaker 2 (28:43):
Is it hard to be patient and not try to
think ahead? Or if you came to able to cope
with that.
Speaker 3 (28:48):
Okay.
Speaker 7 (28:49):
Now, yeah, it's kind of hard because like my knee
would it was feel good. At some times, my dad
would be like, just take it slow, don't do anything
you're not supposed to do what you need. Uh, you know,
because my need, I'll be feeling good. I feel like
I can do certain stuff. But my dad he tells
me all the time, like, don't do anything that. Like
(29:09):
like my my physical therapist he has me doing things
and he's like, if I'm not doing it with my
physical therapist, I shouldn't be doing it. So it's kind
of hard, but I've been doing better with that though.
Speaker 3 (29:19):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (29:20):
And then what kind of role did your dad play?
He said he was a basketball player. He tried to
get you play basketball or is he always all in
with you doing football?
Speaker 7 (29:31):
He tried, but he saw that football was like the
main sport for me. Uh and that's where he put
all the put all the marbles in the bag.
Speaker 2 (29:41):
Well sounds like it's pretty good fit, doesn't it, Anthony?
Speaker 5 (29:45):
Oh? Yeah, absolutely think it is. That's why I just
kind of questioned.
Speaker 6 (29:50):
Or asked, like, DJ, are you your commitment to Kentucky?
Is it more for the what you can do for
the universe. Like I said, there's always quarterback me one
of the best quarterbacks. I kind of really want to
know who do you compare yourself to? And I'm gonna
take Cam Ward or I'm gonna take the easy one
off the table for you. I'm gonna take Cam Warred
(30:12):
off the table for you. Who do you model your
game after?
Speaker 5 (30:16):
Oh? Do you aspire to emulate on the field?
Speaker 7 (30:21):
So my favorite player was growing up as Cam Newton.
I watched him. I grew up watching him when he
was at Arbor. That was my favorite player. Even in
the NFL, that was my favorite player.
Speaker 6 (30:36):
So since you had said that, I want to ask
you because you you're probably around those kids when Cam
was getting into all that stuff with those players, like
at those camps and stuff going back and forth.
Speaker 5 (30:46):
And I'm that type of person when I work camps. No,
I'm not. I'm nowhere on Cam Newton's level. I'm not.
Speaker 6 (30:51):
I ain't that big of a deal. But I always
go back and forth with the players because I think
it's good camaraderie and I think it's good just for
the motivation. How did have you seen those virabl videos
that win and did you have a take on that,
considering that was somebody who looked up to.
Speaker 7 (31:07):
I have watched the I've seen a couple of the videos.
But I mean like it's it's good, you know it's
it can be like a like I'll explained. It can be.
Speaker 5 (31:21):
Like a like a m.
Speaker 7 (31:24):
It could be it can be like a like a
motivation like for CAM to be like going back and
forth with them. It can like motivate them and like
a camp and stuff like that.
Speaker 2 (31:41):
Yeah, what DJ is the last thing we got for
you when you mentioned the Kentucky coaches came down to
watch you throw? Which which coaches came down and what
did they tell you after they watched you work out?
Speaker 7 (31:52):
Uh? Coach Bush Hampdon came and came down to watch me.
Speaker 5 (31:55):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (31:56):
He said everything looked good. He said, my my mechanics
look fluid. Everything looks good. Uh. The boss coming off
my head good?
Speaker 3 (32:06):
So okay, and then I do it.
Speaker 2 (32:08):
Well. That that little earthquake I heard about Saturday, the
hit over Marrorble, Tennessee, just right outside of a Knoxall.
Do you feel any vibrations or anything from that or
did not get into the Knoxville area.
Speaker 7 (32:19):
We I hope yeah, I felt to everybody, everybody in
the house about it. I ain't know what it was.
I thought it was my sister's in there making a racket,
but I realized it was bigger than that, so I
was I ain't realize what it was until it had
got done.
Speaker 2 (32:38):
Well, we don't have any earthquakes up here. You'll be
safe when you get to accident and all. Okay, yeah,
all right, Well, thank you very much for joining us.
Good luck with your recovery and everything, and be looking
forward to keeping up with you this season goes on,
especially if you end up playing somewhere here in Kentucky
this year.
Speaker 7 (32:55):
Yes, sir, thank you, all right.
Speaker 2 (32:57):
Stay with us here on Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk.
We'll be back after this short break.
Speaker 1 (33:01):
This is the home of the Wildcats. Six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 2 (33:07):
Welcome back to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk to
our Mother's Day version. This was Larry Valtz sitting in
the chair for Anthony White, who's up visiting with his
mom up in Cleveland. And how are things going with
you and your mom this morning?
Speaker 6 (33:23):
Anthony Larry Vought, I stalled her out she on her
way out to church and she'd hear herself.
Speaker 5 (33:30):
You can ask for yourself, Larry Voll, how.
Speaker 2 (33:33):
Are things going on? How are things going this morning,
Miss White? With your son Anthony there at home with you.
Speaker 5 (33:38):
Oh, I love that. I love my son to come home.
He's gonna spoil me today.
Speaker 2 (33:44):
Well, he needs to spoil you because he's supposed to,
because I lost my mom back in August, and I
told him to give you an extra hug for me
and to spend a really nice day with you, because
that'd be kind of my Mother's Day present to my mom,
helping him spend more time with you. So I appreciate
you letting him stay there and let him kind of
pamper you today hopefully.
Speaker 6 (34:05):
Okay, I'm sorry for you the loss of your mother,
but that's a special loss.
Speaker 7 (34:08):
Boy. I lost my mother twenty some years ago, and
it's just like yesterday.
Speaker 5 (34:13):
But I'm praying for you.
Speaker 3 (34:14):
Well, thank you.
Speaker 2 (34:15):
I said to start the show that I always always
thought I appreciated Mother's Day, but I don't think I
ever appreciated it near as much as I do today.
Wish I could have my mother back for one more day,
or one more week, or one more whatever.
Speaker 5 (34:26):
You're right too, bad about that, but I'm praying for you.
Speaker 4 (34:29):
Just hang in there.
Speaker 5 (34:30):
Cherish the memories. Cherish the memories, yes, ma'am.
Speaker 3 (34:34):
And Anthy's supposed to give you a hug for me. Okay, Okay,
he's finna give it to me right now, all right?
Speaker 4 (34:41):
Feel it?
Speaker 3 (34:42):
Yes, I did.
Speaker 2 (34:43):
I could feel it makes me feel better just feeling that.
So thank you. You say a little prayer for all
of us at church.
Speaker 6 (34:48):
Okay, Okay, I'll be in town a couple of weeks
and I'll see you.
Speaker 3 (34:53):
Okay, sounds good, Okay, okay, thank you? All right.
Speaker 2 (34:57):
And you know, Anthony, I may need a little bit
of prayer to be able to get home today.
Speaker 5 (35:02):
What's going on up there?
Speaker 2 (35:03):
Well after I just I lied to DJ Hunter. I
didn't mean to, but I lied to him telling them
we don't have earthquakes up here as soon. I've already
got three people that have messaged me by my buddy's
Tina Cox and Cliff Head Irban. Just a little bit ago,
there was an earthquake of two point eight that measured
at two point eight on the Richter scale. I think
it is on the Jess bengartt County line, which is
(35:26):
over the Kentucky River, which is exactly where I drive
back to go home for about twenty minutes from here.
Did you hear what happened over in Blacksburg, Virginia this
past week? No, but I get that music had something
to do with it. Yes, Metallica was playing on campus
of Virginia Tech at least stadium, sixty thousand fans and
as they were playing Inner Sandman, all the fans jumping
(35:47):
up and down. It registered on the Richter scale. It
was less than a one point zero a small earthquake.
If Metallica played CommonWell Stadium, New Circle Road would probably
just crumble.
Speaker 3 (36:00):
Well, I worried.
Speaker 2 (36:01):
I hope the road didn't crumble on the way back
to where I'm going to be going home. Ye'll be careful.
We've already had enough drama this morning. But what the
heck's going on? Earthquakes and Maryville, Tennessee, and earthquakes over
at the Kentucky River. That's not supposed to happen. Watch
the earthquake map and see how many earthquakes are throughout
the United States all the time. It's interesting. I don't
(36:22):
want to it would scare me, so well, stay with us.
We'll be back on Stockyards Sunday Morning Sports Talk. When
we do, we will have Andrea Frees on to talk
about a magazine project that she's got going on, and
our boyfriend is Angeley Aminar, so she would tell a
little bit about basketball this season in Kentucky as well.
So we're back on the Clark's Pumpet Shop studio here
(36:44):
in Lexington for more of Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk.
