This is the Home of the Wildcats.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
Six thirty w l AP Welcome in Stockyards Bank, Sunday
Morning Sports talking Anthony White along with just Larry Vaut
this morning. Well at this moment, because Jack Peril must
be sleeping in. He must think he's me, He must
think he don't have to do the show. But we
come to Clark's Main Street market studios and beautiful downtown Lexington, Kentucky.
(00:25):
Return refreshed re few at Clark's Pumping Shop. And Larry,
we talked about a couple of weeks ago. It was
you said like two hundred million. It wasn't quite two
hundred million, was it. That was one of the.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
Clark's pumping shop A little less.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
Like that.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
Yeah, it was up there. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
So go on, every buy your ticket, buy you some
buy you some gas, snacks, whatever it is you need.
This is a this is our host sponsor. We appreciate that.
Larry Vaud Howard, things going with you while we wait,
Well we will have Jack.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
We just got to get.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
Them out of bed. Okay, he's gotten out of bed.
Jack welcome. But Larry, how are things going going?
Speaker 4 (01:05):
Well? Let me give you one update. Last week we
were wondering how Josh Cattis did in the election and
Dancing with the Stars. Well, he tied for first with
the judges Award, But do you know who his partner was, Antony?
I do not know Alison Fleemant, And do you know
what her job is?
Speaker 3 (01:23):
I don't know not who. I do not know who
that person is, Larry, but.
Speaker 4 (01:27):
She's the marketing director for Clark's Pumpet Shop. I didn't know, so,
so I thought, that's a nice little Tali on what
you just were saying right there. So Josh won the
honors for the second year in a row. But I
had a very good weekend. I helped volunteer at the
Run the Bluegrass with their packet pickup and paste out
water Saturday morning kind up, had a bed at four
(01:50):
forty five so I could be election in time, and
met a lot of really nice people, a lot of
people that I admire. For me will run that thirteen
mile course because it is brutal. So I had a
really good day and then unfortunately I kind of found
out just how bad the damage was in Somerset and London,
because I really beyond when I went to bed Friday night,
(02:12):
I just had no sense of what maybe was coming
or what was happening down there. And so when I
got through and started home and started seeing some pictures
and the news stories, it was very.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
Very heartbreaking.
Speaker 4 (02:24):
So certainly thinking about all those folks down that way.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
That is we will and we will have Josh Maxion
at nine point thirty to talk about some of those things.
And Larry Vaught, I did not know you were in Lexington, Kentucky,
because I was in Twinsburg Heights, Ohio, last week, and
I was.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
I think I was there the week before.
Speaker 4 (02:46):
That to that of the week before, aren't you.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
I think so?
Speaker 2 (02:52):
Yeah, yeah, I don't know I was in Ohio, but
I was in Twinsburg Heights last week. And you talked
to my mom on the show. We talked with her.
She had an opportunity need to have her debut. But
on my way back, she set a gift for you
and a note with the gift and she told me,
when you see Larry, give him this. She gave me
the same thing. So for both of our homes, we
(03:13):
will have something that my mom wants us to have
am memorial of Mother's Day. And if I knew you
were election Ton, I would have gave it to you yesterday,
but I didn't know you weren't Lexington because you can't
sit still.
Speaker 4 (03:26):
Well, I might have been already out of the linery
out there before you even had a change to get up,
because that was already exact by nine thirty, because my
day started, like I say, about five thirty out there,
six quarter to six, So I might have been already
hitted back before you got up yesterday.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
I would have i for this opportunity because she seemed
so grateful for you mentoring me and just being a
part of my life. I would have gotten up early.
And you do know, Larry, I'm not always been a
late riser.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
You know.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
I've played sports and we've had six o'clock workouts and yeah,
and I've been in management for a while. I've had
an open buildings and things like that. So I can
get up as six if I have to. I just
don't prefer to.
Speaker 4 (04:07):
Yeah, I just figured Saturdays one.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
Day, you do, Jack, Jack Pilgrim, Uh, wake up, sleepyhead.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
How are things going? Why were you sleeping in? It's Sunday.
It ain't Saturday. You see, I wasn't sleeping in. I
got a new phone this week, so.
Speaker 5 (04:26):
I'm learning the like the volume and the vibration that
my old phone was cracked and so the vibration you
could hear it from three rooms over. So this one
I was I was actually brushing my teeth. I've been
up in Adam since, you know, for an hour now.
So yeah, it's it's just bad timing on my part.
But hey, guess what, you know, we're good, we're cruising.
It's it's a Sunday morning down here in Memphis where
(04:49):
the last day of NIKE U I v L the
live period following all these coaches around. So yeah, it's
been a productive weekend down here in Memphis.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
We're going to have to talk a little bit about that.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
But as as I stated earlier, we will have Josh
maxon to talk about some of the tornado damages and
some of the efforts, and some.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
Of our former people who are.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
Boots on the ground, Larry Vaudet at nine to thirty,
and we'll have a ten to thirty. We have reached
Potter UK basketball signee. Eleven o'clock, we have Holly Stacy
on to talk about golf. So we do have a
lot of things going on on the show. But I
did want to start the show off because I guess
it's the most recent news. Larry Vaught our softball team,
(05:34):
explain how that goes? How do they they send there
up again? If they lose their out, they win and
they still can be out, but they have to win
today against they have to win today.
Speaker 4 (05:45):
Well, it's double elimination fourteen at Kentucky lost their opening
games Northwestern, then came back and beat USC Upstate and
then beat and then beat Northwestern in the losers bracket final.
So now they go up against host Clemson today. If
they happened to beat Clemson in the opening game, then
they turn around and play another game. So Kentucky would
(06:08):
have to be Clemson twice to advance in the NCAA tournament.
But at least they've got a change, because after you
get shut out and lost your first game to Northwestern,
it didn't look real good. But they came back yesterday
and really really played well, hit the ball finally, and
on Friday they just and the walls. They just didn't
have any offense at all. But yesterday they got good pitching,
(06:30):
got good offense, won two games, and now now who knows,
but they got a chance today, Larry.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
You say, good offense, but didn't they get seven runs
out of the eight seven runs in the second in
the second inning, so all the all the runs came
one inning, right with two outs.
Speaker 4 (06:46):
Yeah, but that's but that's better than no runs Friday.
They just got they decided to all get their hits.
Speaker 3 (06:54):
And on inning.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
So realistically, and let's say we have to so we'll
have to beat Clemson twice today to move on, which
is going to be a huge feat.
Speaker 4 (07:08):
Yeah, it'd be a difficult challenge, but at least they
got a change, so they at least their luck was
a little bit better than the UK baseball's team lucks
this weekend.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
And where do we stand?
Speaker 2 (07:18):
And someone I was out with some former players and
some Texas A and M admin Texas and Athletics admin,
and we were talking about our baby. We were talking
about all sports, just because that's what we do. And
I thought that our baseball season was over. But obviously
our baseball season is not over, because Tuesday we play
Oklahoma in Birmingham.
Speaker 4 (07:40):
In the sec ternment of the team that they just swept,
and they may still need another win to get an
NCAA tournament. I'm not sure, some people would say yes,
some people would say no, but just heartbreaking down a.
Vanderbilt gave up home runs in the ninth inning to
lose on both Thursday and Friday. Then yesterday had three
to zero lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning,
(08:02):
got beat five to five to three. So three games
at Kentucky could have easily won. I mean the first game,
Vanderbilt was down to its last strike and hit the
three right home run to beat Kentucky by run, and
they could have easily swept. Vandy could easily won two
and certainly should have won one. Instead they got swept.
And now I'd say they're probably right on that NCAA
(08:24):
bubble at this.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
Point, and I guess it is.
Speaker 2 (08:30):
I guess that's kind of like playing in SEC football
because the conference is so tough and our record probably
looks mediocre because the conference we play in, and you're
telling me that we have to make we have to
win a couple of games in the tournament to even
have a chance. Like I said, our record is mediocre,
but we're not playing against slouches weekend a week out.
Speaker 4 (08:48):
Now they're thirteen to seventeen in the SEC. Was just
thirteenth in the standings. But former UK coach Keith Madison
pointed out to me that one thing that worked out
against Kentucky this year, they didn't get to play Missouri,
which finished three and twenty seven in the league. For
a lot of the teams that finished above Kentucky did
get to play Missouri and got three wins out of
(09:11):
that that he didn't have. So he's hoping that the
NCAA Selection committee will take that into consideration. But I mean,
when you finish thirteenth in your league standings, I think
it's even a league as good as SEC and obviously
puts you on the NCAA bubble.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
That makes sense. That makes sense.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
So I means you don't get those bats going, and
let's get this stuff going on Tuesday against Oklahoma in Birmingham.
But Jack Pilgrim, you're in Memphis, Tennessee. What are you
actually looking at? You said you're following coaches around here?
You following Mark Pope around because Mark pope roster is
pretty much set. I know he's looking for you, looking
at the future. What do you got going on down
(09:50):
in Memphis?
Speaker 5 (09:53):
Yes, sir, Yeah, it's a Mark Pope started here Friday,
bounced up to Iowa for three SSB yesterday and then
came back or early yesterday, and then came back for
the night session and then he's on his way out
so he won't be here this morning. And then I
think the assistants are still around. But yeah, we're looking
at the twenty twenty sixth class and twenty twenty seven. Mate,
(10:14):
you know, maybe keeping a loose eye on twenty twenty eight,
but yeah, let's kind of setting the foundation for the
future recruiting efforts, and you know, kind of following.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
The best of the best. They're going and.
Speaker 5 (10:28):
Trying to swing for the fences on the Tyron Stokes,
a Louisville native, number one player in the class, and
you know, a bunch of different top five, top ten kids,
so you know, there's no drop off. I know there's
a lot of just concern about you know, would Mark
Pope still recruit some of these types of guys and
you know, the true NBA talents. And he spent the
entire weekend following the best of the best, you know,
(10:48):
not not settling for the top fifties, top one hundred kids.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
He's swinging, you know, shooting for the stars. With this class.
So we'll we'll see what happens there.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
Is Mark is Mark Pope and his staff Are they
tight lift about those things? Because I was going to
that's what I was going to ask you. Typically under
our last coach, you just look at the top twenty
five players, maybe the top ten to fifteen players in
the country, and you think that's who Calipari is going after,
and that's whose Kentucky is going to fill their roster
with at least two or three of the top fifteen players.
And I don't think that's Mark post. But if you
(11:20):
can get a top fifteen talent, why not. Do you
think he or some names that you have down there?
Are there people that he's going after that has that
are top fifteen or you think he's just looking for
a fit for his team And what are some names
that you guys are watching down there that we can
look forward to?
Speaker 5 (11:38):
Well, yeah, the reason why you bring in a guy
like Jason Hard actually, you know, former NBA player, a
longtime NBA vet.
Speaker 3 (11:46):
You know it was as successful of a you know.
Speaker 5 (11:49):
High major D one college player at Syracuse as you'll find,
and you know, native of Englewood, California, so has some.
Speaker 3 (11:57):
Deep, deep, deep, the deep West Coast roots.
Speaker 5 (12:00):
And Jason Crow Junior is actually the son of Jason
Hart's lifelong best friend, former roommates, former teammates that back
in high school thirty years ago, and just kind of
the long, long long play there with you know, being
being close teammates, best best friends. I think Jason Crow
Junior calls Jason Hart his godfather. So this very very
(12:23):
very tight relationship there. And he's the number six player
in the country of you know is he actually is
leading eybl in scoring right now, so as you know,
one of one of the most talented scorers in the class.
And deep roots there for for Kentucky to definitely take
advantage of.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
But that's one of the main ones.
Speaker 5 (12:39):
Obviously, Tyron Stokes is It's going to be a kind
of head to head battle of the Juggernauts plus Louisville
because the kid is from Louisville. You know, some deep
family ties there with the Louisville class. He that family
kind of grew up cheering for Louisville, but there are
some Kentucky ties there. So yeah, it's it's some of
the heavy, heavy, heavy hitters in the class. You know, Theresa, Trevor.
(13:00):
Ariza's son is one of the best players in the class.
A lot of kind of name brand kids with with
you know, longtime basketball connections that I can talk you's
associated with.
Speaker 3 (13:10):
So yes, pretty fun class there, for sure.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
You know you're getting old when you start talking about
guys who played the NBA way after I was done
playing sports, and now you're talking about their son, their
sons being prospects to going to college. That makes you old, Jack,
So stay young. We will continue to show after this.
You're listening to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports talk on
News Radio six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 1 (13:32):
This is the home of the Wildcats, six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning sports talker Anthony White
along with Jack Pilgriman Larry Vaught. Stockyards Bank is your
trusted partner since nineteen hundred and four, so head on
over to syb dot com for all your banking and
financial needs. Larry Vat, josh Maxie, Joshua Maxie, I've been
(13:57):
I think we've been friends on social media for a
long time.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
I never knew who the guy was.
Speaker 2 (14:01):
He's coming on the show a little bit later, talk
about some of the damages in London, Kentucky and down
in that area from the tornadoes that occurred this weekend
late this week.
Speaker 3 (14:15):
What is your connection to Josh?
Speaker 4 (14:20):
He's a coach down in the thirteenth region, and so
I've known Josh and corresponded with him back and forth
in different ways for a little bit. So I just
saw his posts yet yesterday about how that Reed Shepherds
reached out to him and he went and got read
and Reid spent the day helping and everything like that,
and I thought it would be kind of nice to
(14:40):
let and maybe nice is not the right word, but
it'd be good to let Josh come on because read
cud a little flat in the season from some UK fans,
So I thought, just let him come on and talk
a little bit about what Reid is willing to do.
Speaker 3 (14:53):
Yesterday.
Speaker 4 (14:53):
Then I also to kind of update this from a
person that was right there about what is how how
devastating it was saying any of us could do to
try to help the folks down there during the recovery tap.
Speaker 3 (15:06):
Well, you said called flack. I didn't know.
Speaker 2 (15:08):
The only flak I knew that Reid caught was the shirt.
The shirt deal shirt and shorts.
Speaker 3 (15:12):
Was that? Is there anything? Okay? That was that? Was it?
Speaker 4 (15:16):
That's what I think he caught up for that to
do it for a Yeah.
Speaker 2 (15:21):
And Jack, I don't know, like I said, if you
feel any differently when he said Flack, I thought maybe
something else happened with Read. I was like, man, everybody
loves Read. I didn't think there was anything. But we
are going to have josh on in the next segment
to talk about what's going on in uh London and
other parts of the state which are devastating. Like you said,
I saw the pictures. I watched the news. UH a
(15:42):
brand new car purchase less than a week was flipped
over in the individual's front yard. That I said, it's
we kind of been I guess have been lucky in
the Lexta in the central Kentucky part of the state,
which doesn't make it fair any better for the you know,
anybody because you don't you don't is devastating. You don't
want to see that happen to anybody. But I mean,
(16:04):
we just can't catch a break in the state.
Speaker 5 (16:06):
Jack Pilgrim, Yeah, it was weird, like just waking up.
You know, you have so many friends and you know,
their loved ones, their family members, their lifelong friends, and
you know, you just wake up and you just get
have so many texts and you know, messages, and they're
(16:26):
just like, I don't know what to do. I woke
up this morning and my whole life is flipped upside
down and you just like you feel so helpless, and
you see the videos and the pictures and it just,
I mean, it just riffed your heart out of your chest.
Speaker 3 (16:38):
It's truly like one just some of the most.
Speaker 5 (16:42):
Devastating and tragic scenes I've ever seen. It's like something
out of a movie. And just an area, and I
mean just a state. I mean, the state has just
gone through so much and has been through too much,
and it just feels like every other week and now
we're talking about another national disaster and you know, having
to kind of get the release efforts and and you
know how we're going to respond, and.
Speaker 3 (17:02):
It's just it sucks. It just really it really sucks.
Speaker 5 (17:04):
But for that area, especially that you know just so
many good people and you know obviously just that for
some reason, just that read Shepherd picture in that post
from Josh Max, it just it just it crushed me.
So I had tears streaming on my cheeks yesterday while
I was working in the afternoon when he posted that,
because it just it hits you in a whole different
(17:25):
level of you know, this guy who yet, like you
talked about with the stupid Arkansas shirt and how you
know all this kid doesn't you know, isn't doesn't remember
his roots and he's not a Kentucky and anymore that
all that stuff is absolute nonsense. It's it's the dumbest
conversation on the planet when you see stuff like what
he did yesterday and what he's going to continue to
(17:46):
do for his hometown, wearing a Kentucky shirt as he's
you know, sifting through the rubble and then trying to
you know, get to the bottom and help as many
people as he can in his hometown.
Speaker 3 (17:56):
It's just it's just a tragedy.
Speaker 5 (17:58):
And uh reach efforts as Kentucky as it gets, and
we love him for it.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
Larry Vall, let me throw your curve ball before we
go to break and we bring Josh back at the
next break. What is what is the likelihood? And I
guarantee you will think that this is not far Fetcharry,
But what is the likelihood but because it has to
do closely with Reed Shepherd's hometown that John Cali Perry
pitches in.
Speaker 4 (18:25):
If it did, it would not surprise me at all.
Would not surprise me at all, because that's one thing,
whether your pro kal anti kale or whatever, you've got
to give a man credit. He's done a lot of
things to fundraise for difficult situations when he was at Kentucky,
and it would not surprise me at all to see
him find a way to help out.
Speaker 3 (18:46):
Well, we will ask, and Josh may know.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
And I'm sure once Red Uh set foot down and
Josh picked read up and they started the efforts of
recovering in London, then I'm sure he.
Speaker 3 (18:59):
Got to calib Perry.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
I'm gonna ask Josh that when we come back, Larry
Vauk and Jack Pilgrim, Bo Robinson, we will ask them.
We will continue this show on the other side of
this break. You're listening to Stockyards Banks Sunday Morning Sports
Talk on news radio six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 1 (19:13):
This is the home of the Wildcats, six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 2 (19:17):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I'm Anthony
White along with Larry Vauk, and Jack Pilgrim. This overage
Sunday Morning Sports Talk is broke by Country Boy Brewing.
We are efforting to get Joshua Maxion to discuss some
of the things going on in Laurel County, some of
(19:38):
the efforts to recover from the devastation of the tornadoes
that has taking place this week. But in the meanwhile,
I guess, Jack Pilgrim, I guess we can discuss more
so just read Shepherd in general, some of the things
he's done this season. I think that the season may
(20:01):
not have been the season he wants to have in
the NBA, but he has the opportunity, and like you said,
he's coming back home to help out his community, which
I think a lot of a lot of the players do,
or a lot of just athletes in general in different
cities will will do. But your thoughts on I know
we spoke about it prior to but read coming back
and helping his team out while he's still actively participant
(20:25):
in the NBA.
Speaker 5 (20:29):
Yeah, from what obviously the rookie season he was hoping for,
and you know, just kind of a kind of worst
case scenario of I mean, maybe best case depending on
which English you look at. But of a lot of
talent ahead of him and you know, some vests, some
young rising talent, just kind of a unique mixture with
(20:51):
the Houston Rockets where you know, they didn't really need
the number one the number three draft.
Speaker 3 (20:56):
Pick to kind of help them and save the day.
Speaker 5 (20:58):
And you know, when he got a shot, he had
a couple of games where he'd you know, catch fire
from deep but really just up and down and up
and down, and was never really able to find that
traction and consistency that he was probably hoping for in
his first year, you know, as he's in Rocket.
Speaker 3 (21:15):
But you know he's making a lot of money and
doing it.
Speaker 5 (21:18):
You know, sitting the bench and just kind of developing
and figuring himself out and you know, kind of getting
his footing in the NBA. It's it's you wanted the
year to go a little bit better for him, but
he still showed plenty of promise and you know, kind
of long term hope because it's such a young core
and deep core that you know he is. They'll be
contending for a very long time. So the hope is
(21:39):
that he can kind of go go along in his
own own terms and own timeline and become a star
forum down the road.
Speaker 2 (21:45):
As we wait for get Max on you can join
the show. I don't know why I've been getting the
number out eight five, nine to eight zero two to
eight seven eight five, nine to eight zero cats for
the Big Gass Fans hot Line. Let's get to the
big Ass Fans hot Line to see with John Short
has to say, John Short, you're a great American.
Speaker 3 (22:04):
John Short, Yeah.
Speaker 6 (22:07):
You'll great, You're great. Maggan, how y'all do this morning?
Speaker 3 (22:10):
I am doing good yourself?
Speaker 6 (22:13):
And Nigga said, no good based off week you're freaking tacky.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
Well, our women called back and uh As the w
nineteen seventy four collective has followed up on Twitter and
said that, you know, it's remarkable that they have followed
up because it has been somewhat of a disappointing season for.
Speaker 3 (22:34):
Our softball team.
Speaker 2 (22:35):
Our baseball team has had a struggle, but they've called in,
they've they've done some great things, they've done some things
that they probably should have done better. So I don't
know if it's that bad of a weekend. John Short and.
Speaker 6 (22:47):
The Suffot taking winning in today to Rue Clason twice
a day. Is it televised.
Speaker 3 (22:51):
Today ESPN plus, it.
Speaker 6 (22:56):
Won't be on Reggae is seen, will be on the WLV.
Speaker 3 (23:01):
No.
Speaker 2 (23:01):
I don't think so bow let's bow uh, let's bowl
those otherwise, Bo Robinson?
Speaker 3 (23:05):
Will it be on no radio?
Speaker 6 (23:08):
John so ducky And we're gonna win the Southeast Tournament
in base and win the Holy Civil I be thinek.
We will have an a C C road series of
be Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Georgia, Alabama of reception the Mississippi Schios.
So I believe be in the World Series.
Speaker 3 (23:28):
I don't think that's far fetched. Larry Vo.
Speaker 2 (23:30):
There there's probably been quite a few SEC championships. Huh
all SEC n C double A championship.
Speaker 4 (23:38):
I'm sorry, Anthony, I lost you there for a minute.
Speaker 2 (23:40):
I said, Uh, that wouldn't that wouldn't be surprising if
it was all SEC tournament. But I'm saying there has
been quite a few SEC or SEC n C Double
A championships in baseball.
Speaker 3 (23:50):
Right, Oh yeah, SEC.
Speaker 4 (23:52):
He's a powerhouse in baseball, probably before it was a
powerhouse and football was a powerhouse in baseball.
Speaker 3 (23:58):
So there you have, John Short What else you got
for us?
Speaker 6 (24:03):
That's not feam most of the hammer, right, now and
it before the Southeast Conecy in every sport, clothes, sports,
and all the varsity sports. Let me know there's conference
to be like the South Beast a conference. Yes, that
we're supposed to dominate all the sports.
Speaker 3 (24:20):
Agreed, John Short Greed.
Speaker 2 (24:22):
We appreciate the call. You're a great American. Have a
great day, John Short, Bo Robinson. Uh, the things going
on in Laurel County, some of the tornadoes damages, you
have some more insight or information about those before I
I want to cover these before we move on to
other topics.
Speaker 3 (24:40):
So I do know you have some information in them.
Speaker 7 (24:43):
Yes, if you want to assist with donations, the Kentucky
Music Hall of Fame in Renfro Valley is accepting donations
of water and cleaning supplies, no clothing at this point.
And then the Laurel County Sheriff's Office just posted on
Facebook that they are in need of donations of food,
hygiene items, clothing, blankets, and tarts and the donation site
(25:07):
is One Heart Baptist Church in London. I was trying
to get the address down. We will revisit all that
later on today. So, Kentucky Music Hall of Fame accepting
donations of water, cleaning supplies and no clothing, and the
Laurel County Sheriff's office on Facebook asking for food hygiene items, clothing,
blankets and tarts.
Speaker 3 (25:28):
Good thing, but no clothing.
Speaker 2 (25:29):
And I do notice the last couple last couple of
times we've had catastrophes or clothing was not something because
where I work at in the school district, we try
to help send help with the efforts and those, but
clothing is something that they really didn't really require. But
the cleaning supplies kind of surprised me that I thought
(25:52):
there would be more bigger concerns than cleaning supplies. But
I guess the efforts of cleaning up the area, those
are some things that are probably essential. Larry Vault, Well, Larry,
so let's give him Larry, are you with us?
Speaker 4 (26:14):
I'm sorry, I was trying to text and see Josh.
Speaker 7 (26:18):
Okay, Yeah, we're trying to get him on the air
and have him been a successful to connect with him.
So if you can help me out with that.
Speaker 4 (26:24):
Yeah, seems like I don't know why the sales services
I have a little bit of trouble, So yeah, sorry
for the delight, but yeah, cleaning supplies, I think are
always needed because I think we just unless you're gone
through this, you can't imagine the cleanup that's involved, is
what people tell me that. That's why the cleaning supplies
are probably as important as anything you can donate other
than probably just money.
Speaker 7 (26:45):
Hey, real quick, I got mixed up on the address
and the name of the church in Laurel County to
make donations. The donation site is Heart Missionary Baptist Church
at one Heart Baptist Church Road in London and the
doors are open if anybody wants to make a run
down there some donations and help out. So Laura County
(27:06):
Sheriff's Office on Facebook for the info.
Speaker 2 (27:10):
In the meanwhile, I was trying to get in contact
with Maxie Larry Vaught. I was, as I stated, last night,
we were having a football pilewow. There was a bunch
of minds from other SEC teams, some of the UK coaches,
and we were talking about the UK football. The UK
coaches are done with their recruiting for the year and
our roster's pretty much stacked up. It's pretty much set.
(27:33):
We're not adding anybody else. I found out a lot
of inside information as far as the new landscape of
the players being stakeholders and being employees, and Larry Vaught,
I did not know. And this is like I said,
there was more than Kentucky coaches that I was speaking with.
(27:54):
Did you know You and I've talked about this and
we had a caller call in a couple of weeks
back that they will they're being held accountable. You get
fined for not going. You can you can lose money
for not doing your daily activities, just like any other sport.
Are you aware of that, Larry Vat, I was.
Speaker 4 (28:15):
Not that they could be fined or pay you with
held or No. I did not know that.
Speaker 2 (28:21):
Yes, so there are there are several which which makes
me happy, which makes my heart smile a little bit.
There are several aspects of uh the daily I mean,
you're a worker. You're just like any other job. If
you get you get paid with held or DOT for
being late to meetings, not going to class, not going
to weightlifting. I'm the one part I'm kind of interested
(28:45):
in is if they are if you do not practice,
because if you have an injury. I know last year
that there were some guys who may or may not
have been injured but did not participate in practice. Now
as a player, I'm typically participated injured. Some other people
Jeff Netteger and some other people participated injured.
Speaker 3 (29:04):
There's some people.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
Who seemed to be or verbally said they were injured
and did not participate in practice, which helped, which hurt
the production on Saturday, because you were not there to
go through the walkthroughs. You were not there to go
through the continuity of schemes we were trying to install,
so that kind of So that is the one part
I asked about and I didn't get a clear answer,
but it seems like that may be, Jack Pilgrim, that
(29:27):
may be on the table that if you do not
participate in the weekly activities such as practice and whatnot,
that pay can be with help. And that makes me
smile inside that we're getting some kind of structure involved
in this nil stuff.
Speaker 5 (29:40):
Jack PILLERM Man, you've been you know, kind of that
drum for as long as I've known here, So yeah,
I can feel your smile from from through the phone.
Speaker 3 (29:53):
Yeah, I think that's kind of one of the.
Speaker 5 (29:54):
Most fascinating things yesterday, just the last couple of days,
you know, hanging out with some of these coaches and
talking to them about you know, obviously it's the basketball
side of it with their revenue sharing, but just kind
of you know, how they're navigating it and what their
expectation is. Some coaches are like, I think it's gonna
be even more of a crap show than it's been before,
(30:15):
and you know, some of the guardrails I don't agree with.
Others are like, man, this is gonna save the sport.
So yeah, it's it's just fascinating to see how many
different opinions there are with it, and you know, I
think they're all just waiting until. You know, I think
Friday was when they were supposed to officially sign off
on the house settlement, and that we haven't heard anything
publicly on that since. But we should be just days
(30:38):
away from some type of clarity that I know, Anthony,
that you are absolutely thrilled about. If it means what
you're saying, at least on.
Speaker 2 (30:47):
The football side of things, This is another conversation we're having.
The people I was talking to were football people, but
you brought up a great point that basketball we were
talking about the allocations of the twenty twenty two million
dollars we talked, We spoke about the allocation of twenty
two million dollars is not for football to twenty two
million dollars, it's not for basketball, whether the whole athletic program.
(31:09):
And I'm not sure if it's okay for me to say,
And I'm not sure if you're you know, off hand, Jack,
I do know, but I'm not sure if it's okay
for me to say because I was given this information
by people who were just having a private conversation. If
the allocation the I'm gonna skew the numbers just so
(31:29):
I don't give So, say there's, say there's thirteen million
dollars going to football out of the twenty two millions,
so that's more than half and basketball. How much does
that leave for basketball? Save five million for basketball? Now
you have a small amount of money for just a
four more million dollars or whatever to go to the
(31:53):
rest of the sports. But is that gonna be enough
money considering you know, there's probably one hundred and eighty
to one hundred players on the football team, Basketball ten
twelve players, and you know OA may want three or four.
Is that Is that something that you guys have talked about?
Is this something you've thought about? Uh, just because the
(32:13):
allocation football is gonna get more just because of the
year numbers, but the fact that UK basketball carries are
our university that are we gonna have enough money if
we if we want to keep o A or or
next year when we have to pay some guys to
round off the roster.
Speaker 3 (32:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (32:32):
That several of the conversations I had yesterday where other
coaches from other high high major competitive uh, you know,
even to to Kentucky with it within the conference of
what's house Kentucky's distribution gonna go like, do you know
how much they're allocating to basketball? You know with the
(32:53):
football program. You know kind of the that that situation's up.
Speaker 3 (32:56):
In the air. Are they going to really invest that
much money in football versus basketball?
Speaker 5 (33:01):
So, you know, everybody in college sports wants to know
right now how it's going to be divided up, and
it's yeah, it's it's interesting with you know, the basketball
versus football dynamic because a lot of schools aren't in
our situation where you know, most of the time, if
it's a football powerhouse in a football you know powerhouse conference,
(33:22):
you know they're going to allocate as much of that
to to football as possible. And then whatever the leftovers
are to everything else, including men's basketball. But because Kentucky
men's basketball is just such a different entity and its
level of importance is just so different, it kind of
creates a new dynamic of how much more do you
invest in the basketball program, or because there's so much support,
(33:45):
you know, do you have to kind of over compensate
with football.
Speaker 3 (33:48):
And you know that the local.
Speaker 5 (33:49):
Donors and you know, some of the biggest, you know,
fundraisers here in Lexington are going to be donating to
basketball no matter what and kind of compensate for for
for that one. So yeah, and it does create a
very interesting dynamic of what do you prioritize.
Speaker 3 (34:04):
And yeah, I do think that they're the ranges that
you're talking.
Speaker 5 (34:09):
I think is going to be a fair where that's
I don't think they're going to short change the football
program Before we.
Speaker 3 (34:15):
Go to break.
Speaker 2 (34:15):
It looks like the softball game will be televised on
the SEC network per our. Phil Roberts was always very
informative on an inbox if we miss some information, So
John Short, I think you can catch it on the
SEC network or ESPN Plus if you have those extra
apps and gadgets we will continue this conversation after this.
(34:37):
You're listening to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk on
news radio six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 1 (34:41):
This is the home of the Wildcats, six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 2 (34:46):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I'm Anthony
White along with Jack Pilgrim and Larry Vaught. Larry Vaught,
so make sure I got your attention this time, so
you don't get so you don't.
Speaker 3 (35:00):
Give you more dead here.
Speaker 2 (35:03):
We with Jack and I were talking before we went
on the break, and you know we've Barnhart, Mitch Barnhart
has done a great job of putting together some programs
and like I said, first SEC volleyball championship period comes
from Kentucky. Like we're the first to do something in
this conference, which is huge. My question is talking about
(35:25):
the profit sharing and the players becoming employees of the university.
Now in the allocation of twenty two million dollars that
does not include nil, so there can still be money.
There can still be money accumulated to pay players if
we need, but just for the running of the programs
is twenty two million dollars that's supposed to be.
Speaker 3 (35:44):
Allocated throughout all the sports.
Speaker 2 (35:46):
Larry Vaughten and I kind of gave you a rough
estimate that football is going to get more than half
of that money just because of the number of players
are going to get more than half of that money.
But then we have a very good basketball that now
it seems like since we have a new coach, they're
digging in their pockets. The donors are back on the
our buck on the bandwagon and they are donating, so
(36:08):
that may help the basketball program. But we also brought
Kenny Brooks in, who also needs you know, Georgia Amore's left,
he needs to replace some people. He needs to compete
in a very tough conference in women's basketball. Are you
concerned at all with this twenty two million dollars the
way it's going to be allocated that Kenny Brooks is
probably going to be third in line, our girl Rachel Losson,
(36:33):
maybe sixth in line, seventh in line, you know, Minjion,
maybe I'll guess fourth. But we also have a great
track program. So, Larry Vader, you concerned about the allocations
of twenty two million dollars if now that I know
more of how it's how it's supposed to be allocated
at Kentucky. Does that concern you about Mitch Barnhurst could
(36:56):
be continuing to be successful.
Speaker 4 (36:58):
I think I'm more curious because it's just going to
depend on how what what each sport or each school
wants to emphasize. Me don't forget the gymnastics. They've been
pretty darn good too in sport and sports like gymnastics
and volleyball and baseball they don't get a lot of
nil money or anything like the other sports. But it's
(37:19):
a case of which sport do you want to emphasize,
and we all have to put most of your money in,
and I'm pretty sure we all know the answers. Whichever
sport brings you the most money back, if that's the
one that's going to get the most money from you
to keep trying to be successful, and how you do
that or how you balance that and break that all down.
I don't know what I'm anxious to see across the
country if some schools decide, Okay, I don't know if
(37:42):
we ever win a national championship in football or basketball,
but if we load up in volleyball, or load up
in baseball, or load up in gymnastics with money, maybe
we can do it then, so maybe you'll see schools
going in that direction some too. So it's gonna be
a really interesting scenario. How much is going to have
(38:04):
to divide that money up, and then how you justify
or if you do justify, how you decided to divide
it up when you give. I think football will get
way over half of it. I think they may get
out of the twenty two. They may get seventy percent
of I mean, you just don't know how much or
sixty percent.
Speaker 3 (38:25):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (38:25):
But it's going to be interesting to see it and
how it ends up playing out, and then what does
it do to anil to your donors still sign guys
to lucrative endorsement deals or as a school, now I'm
going to be begging them to give the money back
to them to help compensate for what they're losing.
Speaker 2 (38:46):
Larry Butcher a smart guy. It will be well over half.
The seventy part is probably closer when it will be.
We will continue this conversation when we come back. You're
