Speaker 2 (00:06):
Bank Sunday Winning Sports Talk on Anthony White along with
Jack Pilgrim and Larry Vaught, coming to you from Clark's
Main Street Market Studios in downtown Lexington, Kentucky. Return Refresh
and Refused with Clark's Pumpy Shop. Larry vaup Jack Pilgrim.
We talked a lot of basketball, and we got Jasper
coming on at ten thirty, and we got Britney coming

(00:27):
on at eleven, and that's gonna be UK basketball talk.
But Larry Vaul has told me for years, Jack Pilgrim
that this is a football state, and Larry Vaught would
this being a football state. There and a whole bunch
of news going on on the football team, which is
good for me. But what I did this morning and
last night I went and watched Zach colez outa film
from back at Texas A and M. And I told
you two weeks ago I was hanging out with some

(00:50):
SEC athletic people that were in the department, so I
got some more inside scoop on Zach Calzotta. But I
did watch Zach colez outa beat Alabama so I don't
think all the news about our football team is bad news.
But I think you feel otherwise. I think you feel that.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
We need to dig deeper, dig outside of just football itself.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
Well, I don't think it's necessarily the bad news about
UK football. I just think that right now UK football
could take a lesson from UK basketball, because I think
Jack would agree with me. I can't imagine any coach
basketball coach in America that has won the off season

(01:40):
better than Mark Pope, not just because of the recruiting
he has done, but because of the availability he's had
in different ways to spread the word about what's going
on with his basketball program, and many of his players
have been on radio shows, interviews, done different things to
kind of promote what's going to go on with Kentucky basketball,

(02:02):
UK football, crickets. I mean, you hear nothing, and I
know sometimes too much talk is a bad thing, but
I think UK football could certainly stand a little pr
work like what Mark Pope has been doing. I mean,
maybe you'd be a little selective, but gosh, why not
let it now like ty Bright be showcasing some things

(02:24):
and talking about the team for next year. Letting Josh
Katis do some of that, or letting some of the
assistant coaches talk a little bit about if Mark Stoops
didn't want to do it, let some other people that
levents be out there more doing it. And I know
people say, well, you don't want to overhype coming up
four and eight. True, but you just don't want to
go dig and go hide like it makes it sound

(02:45):
like you can't even go four and eighth this year.
So that would be my point. There's just such a
contrast right now between Mark Pope and the way he's
out there sharing news about the basketball program and on
the football side, nothing.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
In UK football ad man, let me let me let
me holler Larry for a second, Larry trying to stay Hey,
I'm trying to stay even killed man, I'm trying to
keep our fan base and gauge, I will say, Mark,
but Mark Stewts has been traditionally and you can attest
to this younger and I know Ty and Josh aren't
younger players, but he doesn't typically let younger players speak

(03:25):
and tell me what you think about this, and Jack,
I'm gonna come to you as well, but tell me
what you think about this. Maybe because that whole idea.
I don't want younger players to speak because I don't
want them to speak out of turn And the other
part is I don't want you to speak and add
pressure to yourself. And this has been the whole concern

(03:45):
we've had this whole off season, and I'm telling you
it's not a bad thing. Fan base is not a
bad thing that we have so much attrition and turnover.
Like if you want to keep a four and eight
team that was what a six, seven, eight, nine, ten
win potential team two years prior with better talent, that
means we're trending in the wrong direction. If you want

(04:05):
to keep those people, you could have been messing around
and looking at the two and ten team. So the
attrition and the turnover is not a problem to me,
Larry Vat, I do think that it's kind of Mark
Stoop's thing, and so I want you to give him
some slack. He's always been the type I don't want
to put microphone in people's faces. He protected people in general,

(04:25):
and like you said, I think I'm with you. I
don't think Josh or Ty would say the wrong things.
But there's really not anything to be said. So why,
you know, why bring something up. All they gonna tell
you is we're out here working hard. Man, we have
it now. One thing I know, they ain't gonna tell
you that we ain't putting no footballs on the ground,
because I've heard they have been footballs on the ground,
a lot of them. But I'm saying I'm still optimistic

(04:49):
because of the turnover. The turnover doesn't bother me. I'm
optimistic because of the turnover because I know the blue
collar work ethic that Mark stoops and steals and his players,
and I think we can get back to that. Given
an I l and some of the things have changed
the way this program is. Jack Pilgrim, I don't know
how you feel. Are you on Larry side that not

(05:11):
hearing anything is hurting the program or are you on
my side where Man, I don't want to hear nothing.
I just want to see I just wanted to pass
clinking against Toledo. Once the ball is kicked off, That's
where I am. I'll be honest, I.

Speaker 4 (05:28):
Don't necessarily want to hear any of that stuff about
why this is going to be the year that we
turn it around and why well, you know, we had
to get rid of the bad eggs and you know,
now is when we got things figured out. You know,
I would almost rather build up. I think the best
example is the Athlon College football preview, either as is

(05:52):
coming out or already did come out. And you know,
every year we get the anonymous coaches talking about all
the very programs across college basketball and the anonymous coaches
in the SEC talking about Kentucky football.

Speaker 2 (06:06):
I mean, basically, these guys.

Speaker 4 (06:08):
Aren't even a thread.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
You know.

Speaker 4 (06:10):
I don't think that Mark Mark Stoops has the want
to to get the program back where.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
It needs to be.

Speaker 4 (06:17):
You know, they're you know, just totally casting off Kentucky
football as a product. And honestly, I think that's where
Stoops should want to be. Where you build up so
much you know, negative press from other outsiders and just
kind of you know, people doubting their abilities to to
win games this year, kind of put yourself at the

(06:38):
bottom of the pack, and then just you have nowhere
to go but up.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
And you know that.

Speaker 4 (06:43):
That's how you you know, that's how Stoops has been
able to build his identity is kind of backs against
the wall, blue collar approach. Hey, we're going to let
our you know, work through the talking. We're not gonna
you know, run our mouths and be you know, kind
of speak stuff into existence. So I think that if
we're going to get back into like, hey, what made
Mark Sup such a special coach when he first got

(07:05):
here and you know, wanted to lay the culture and
the foundation the identity. It wasn't him running his mouth
every offseason. It was him kind of showing that, hey,
you know, why not us, Why can't.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
We prove the world wrong.

Speaker 4 (07:17):
So I would rather kind of let this echo chamber
of negativity kind of keep getting.

Speaker 2 (07:22):
Louder and louder and louder, while.

Speaker 4 (07:24):
The program itself stays silent and hope that you know,
they can they can prove people wrong, rather than being
the people kind of wanting to move the needle and
run their mouths and saying, hey, you know this, you
know we're going to be banging down the door to
the se CE. So we're gonna win the championship and
you know, go to Atlanta and we're going to compete
for the playoffs. Set the bar so high that you
have no room but to go down if you don't,

(07:45):
if you fall short of those expectations. So I'm right
where I need to be in terms of hearing from
the coaches and players right now and.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
Larry vo that will normally do is what would a
sound bite interview? What would it sound? What would be
an ideal to get you convinced, because, like I said,
I think everybody's gonna be where me, you and Jack
are like, eh, you know, I believe in Stoops because
he's shown us that he can do it. Last year

(08:17):
you showed us you couldn't do it, or you weren't
willing to put forth the effort or the dedication and
the dedication I mean holding players account him a lot
of other things, not him personally, but when you're sitting
on a nine point some million dollar check under your cushion,
it gets a little cushiony. But once you set that,
you set that same money on fire. Now now your

(08:37):
ass hot. So we're what would be an ideal sound bite?
Or if you got a Tie or Josh or uh,
anyone you know that can that can speak on behalf
of the team, what would the sound bite sound like?

Speaker 3 (08:54):
I think just to talk about that things can be different.
We're doing things different. We screwed up last year. We
didn't do this right, We didn't do that right. Let
let people know a little bit bit more about some
of your players, talk about some of your incoming pressure,
and just let people know the personality of some of
these guys. Just kind of take a page from what

(09:15):
Mark Pope is doing and just be positive about the
guys you got coming in. You don't have to say, yeah,
we're gonna win the SEC Championship or we're gonna win
ten games, but just talk about some positives on your team.
I mean, if you're right now, you're going into the
first of June, how many people do you think Anthony
know much of anything about Zach Calzada.

Speaker 2 (09:40):
Nobody, nobody know that he went from the SEC and
went down A couple, went down a couple. Yeah, so
know a.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
Little bit, but talk, you know, just get out there
and spread some news. I mean, ticket sales are way down.
How many recruits does Kentucky have signed or have committed
as ex recruiting class.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
I do not know. That is interesting. How many are?
Oh that's why I don't know.

Speaker 3 (10:08):
Yeah, that's exactly right. So I mean when ticket when
ticket sales are down and you got one recruit committed,
I would want to be doing something that spread the
word the Kentucky football is still alive. Instead of just
waiting and hope that I beat Toledo and then generate
some momentum starting in mid August, I wouldn't just write May, June,
and July off and let people say, well, yeah, we'll

(10:30):
just wait and let's hope everybody's going to jump on board,
because they're not. I mean, the numbers tell you that
something needs to be done. You need to be out
there sharing some things. And if Stoops didn't want to talk,
that's fine. But let some of these guys just talk
and make them available summer or do some different things,
and he can kind of control the scenarios of who

(10:54):
he speaks to and all. It is like what Mark
Pope does. But I just think they need something out
there to make fans at least think there's a chance
that next year is gonna be different. Maybe the wins
won't be different, but the way we're gonna play, the
things we're gonna do, and I'll they talked about that
a little bit in the spring, but I just don't
think he can go silent for four months when ticket

(11:16):
sales are down like what they are and recruiting numbers
are down like what they are.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
And I'm with you, but do you think that do
you think that he's It sounds some of your verbage
sounds like you're saying he's conceding, which we know that's
that's not a Youngstown characteristic period, not a Mark Stoops thing.
Or is it a media relations But if you are
media relations, that is your sole job. If you're on
football media, what can you be doing right now? Like you,

(11:41):
we haven't seen anything in probably two months, So it
sounds what you're saying it soundly you're giving this to
Marks like Mark Stup's, like Mark you need Mark doesn't
do that. He has a department that puts out something
like you go put out the highlights from last year,
or just find just some highlights from bring or Joe
shoot up. As far as I'm concerned, just Mike up,

(12:03):
Mike up, coach Wolford or coach coach Stu, coach just
make up the coaches Collinson, just play some of those videos.
But I'm kind of with you, But to sound like
you putting, I guess is it or is it an
administration thing? Well?

Speaker 3 (12:21):
I think Stup's is the voice of the program and
he dictates what happens, and if he doesn't want anything
out there, well nothing as much as going to be
going on. I mean, he he has to cooperate and
let guys be miked up or him be miked up,
or go on a national radio show or something before
SEC media days and do it. And apparently that's just

(12:43):
not gonna happen. And I just think the silence is
not good for UK football right now. We's compared to
what Mark Pope is doing for UK baseball. I mean,
UK baseball is not coming off a national championship season.
But you don't see Mark Pope not talking about what
he's going to do. He's admitted that, you know, we
did some things wrong last year, we're going to do

(13:03):
things different, and I don't like that. And I think
just the we're gonna have Jasper Johnson on with us today,
I think the fact that you just get the message
out there just just helps it, I think right now.
And I think that's probably a word that a lot
of folks that I talked to HUK football kind of
feel like that maybe Stoops has just conceded. I'm with you.

(13:24):
I don't agree with that, but when there's just nothing,
I mean that just seems like in the numbers speak
to it. Maybe not just even fans, but maybe recruits
or even feeling that way.

Speaker 5 (13:37):
Sheesh.

Speaker 2 (13:38):
Well, we're going to continue this conversation, maybe not this
conversation because we have had another addition to close out
our basketball team. I'm going to take this negativity that
Larry's brought to this show and we're we're gonna reverse it.
We're gonna talk some basketball because he did start talking
off about Mark Pope. So Mark Pope has had another
addition this week. We'll talk about that when we come back.

(14:00):
You are listening to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk
on News Radio six thirty WLAP.

Speaker 1 (14:04):
This is the home of the Wildcats. Six thirty w LAP.
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Oneing Sports Talk. I'm Anthony
White along with Jack Pilgrim and Larry Wupp. Stockyards Bank
is our trusted partner. He has been your trusted partner
since nineteen o four, So head on over to syb

(14:24):
dot com for all your banking and financial needs. There's
a bag free falling from the top of one of
these buildings over here, and that kind of goes with
the song and what's the name of that song again.

Speaker 2 (14:38):
Bo Robinson, the sound of Silence, Larry sound of silence,
not sounds sound of Silence. Did you know Simon and Garfunkle,
Larry Water, are you all wear that name of the
song sound of Silence?

Speaker 3 (14:51):
Absolutely?

Speaker 2 (14:54):
Jack Pilgrim, you knew that was the sound of Silence?
I did know. I it's good one.

Speaker 5 (15:00):
It's a very very on brand, great great song choice
at by Bo.

Speaker 2 (15:04):
Yeah, if we were talking UK football, but we're gonna
stop tackling you for UK football because Bo Robinson and
Larry Water trying to get us in a bad mood
with Jack Pilgrim Brandon Hawthorne should get you some good mood.
Slim little cat six eight seventy one hundred and seventy
five pounds, that's slim and that slim in the rear
end back there. But but is that what Mark Pope needs? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (15:30):
What an unbelievable just edition at this stage and you
know you don't hear anything about it. You know, he
takes his official visit mid April, and you know you
hear good things coming out of that visit. But when
you ask folks around the program by like, hey, you
know we're going to add this kid, what's the you know,
what's the latest with him? You know, it is kind

(15:51):
of an initial level of a pessimism of just like,
you know, we're offering a role that not many top
thirty five kids the country are willing to take on.
I mean, if you're a top thirty five kid in
the country, you know, you're expecting to come in and
play at least some type of role, maybe not start,
but you you think that you're going to come in.

Speaker 2 (16:11):
And play real minutes.

Speaker 4 (16:13):
And that's just not something that Kentucky was willing to
offer this kid. But you know, fastest rising prospect in
high school basketball, you know, six' Eight. Hunter he told
me in an interview that he's up to one hundred
and eighty five, pounds he's already added ten pounds.

Speaker 2 (16:28):
Of muscle going into the strength and conditioning.

Speaker 4 (16:30):
Program but he basically, said you, know the staff didn't
say he's going to red shirt him or anything like,
that just, said, hey you, know you're it's going to
be a, tough tough go of it if you do
want to. Play we're not guaranteeing, anything but like we're
not going to not let you play if you earn
a spot and he's basically coming in, saying all, Right
i'm gonna make you guys play. Me so you, know

(16:50):
you love to hear that mentality and love, to you,
know hear the. Competitiveness he, said you, know why WOULD
i go somewhere else and you, know have no challenge
in front of me play thirty minutes a, game but you,
know put up you, know empty calorie. Stats it's, like
what good does that do? Me going to pitt putting
up a bunch of? Numbers why Did Jalen lowe leave

(17:11):
this offseason pit to come To kentucky to play against
better talent and prove himself on the biggest. Stage he's
just kind of taking that first step out instead of you,
know going to a pit and you, know not competing
for anything of, substance but coming To kentucky competing against
the best of the best for AN sec. CHAMPIONSHIP i,
MEAN i think that the mentality is. AWESOME i think

(17:31):
it adds just an unbelievable level of depth that you,
know we dealt with injury issues all season. Long it's
a perfect kind of counter to that of, like, hey
what was the biggest issue with with last? Season with?

Speaker 2 (17:44):
Depth, okay, well let's have a roster that's.

Speaker 4 (17:46):
Legitimately fourteen people, deep all guys that are capable of
playing it at a really high. LEVEL i could not
be more impressed with the, addition and especially when they
were able to add him.

Speaker 2 (17:57):
And talking about the depth and you, KNOW i guess
getting people in you know rolls we don't plan to
use probably player, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen. Fourteen BUT
i think all of that changes if you Take otaga
out of the. Ram what is the? Heat what is
what is the? Juice Own otaga? Is if you had

(18:18):
if you had a, gamble if you had a bet
your Mortgage otaga, returns or you think he's staying in the,
DRAFT i would bet all.

Speaker 4 (18:27):
Of it on On otega pulling his name out of
the draft By wednesday's. Deadline it's been known from the,
beginning when you, know in terms of getting visits scheduled
and workout, scheduled that he was going to be kind
of going all the way through the end of the.
Deadline and the only thing that he's really monitoring at

(18:47):
this stage, is you, know what happens if a lot
of those guys in the twenty five to forty five
ish range pull their name, out you, know rather than
keep it in like.

Speaker 2 (18:58):
That Cedric coward is a great.

Speaker 4 (19:00):
Example he kind of worked his way up in you,
know tested unbelievably well and kind of worked his way
up into the you, know the draft. Rankings so he
turned down the opportunity to go To duke because he you,
know was committed to do and he is keeping his
name in the. Draft but if a lot of those
types of guys were to pull their name out and
come back to, College otago would probably have a tougher

(19:21):
decision to make and, go we'll shoot you. Know all
the competition THAT i have in front of me is,
is you, know they're going back to, college why WOULDN'T
i you, know take one of those spots right now
as a you, know slide into that late late first round.
Status so we're not seeing that, yet and that's really
the only thing that he's monitoring and why he's going
to be probably all the way Through wednesday is the

(19:42):
deadline when until we hear something final from. Him but,
yeah all all all indications are that he'll be pulling
his name out of the, draft and there's not a
whole lot of worry Around lexington about whether he's going
to do that or.

Speaker 2 (19:55):
Not that Is Jack. Pilgrim thank you for your. Analysis
when we come, back we're going to KEEP uk. Basketball
we would HAVE uk basketball Signee Jasper johnson when we.

on from, you non basketballs all year around sport since
you gave up. Football it's been.

Speaker 6 (20:54):
Crazy it's been a lot over the, summer over the off,
season you, know stuff like, that trying to mind.

Speaker 5 (21:00):
Stuff you, ready day one coming and you can take.

Speaker 2 (21:02):
It so where are you at in the process right
now of transitioning from from YOUR i guess scholastic basketball
career into. College that's a little small window where you
could be resting and join your. Youth or are you
more on you, know preparing yourself to put on the
blue and.

Speaker 6 (21:19):
White, yeah definitely, wrong preparing myself even doing a lot of,
conditioning lifting as strong as possible on you, know, stretching
making sure my body is going to be able to,
take you, know the long and.

Speaker 5 (21:33):
Hard days of practices and hard work and stuff like.

Speaker 6 (21:36):
That so definitely on the side, of you, know trying
to prepare as good AS i can for day.

Speaker 2 (21:41):
One And Larry vaught is a little bit and he
doesn't understand how it's been a long time since he's
been young and, we've AS i, stated we watched you
play a lot of. Basketball you've played on a lot of,
circuits a lot of, showcases and he feels like you
should get a lot of. Minutes is that something THAT
i know? You you, know you and those guys become.
BUDDIES i watch videos and if you teaming up with

(22:02):
guys and you, know having a unique, bond is that
something at this point that you know you just like you,
said just refined to your. Game do minutes in those
games and things count for? You are you you get
agitated Like Larry vault when you don't get forty minutes
thirty eight minutes in the.

Speaker 5 (22:18):
GAME i mean not. Really.

Speaker 6 (22:22):
UH i know we have a lot of great talent
on our team and on our. ROSTER i Know Coach
pope has a plan for you, know each and every.
Guy so just having to go in and you, know
find your. Role everybody has, to you, know adjust to
playing with an elite.

Speaker 5 (22:35):
TALENT i feel like we have one of.

Speaker 6 (22:37):
The best rosters in the, country you, know one through
one through, twelve one through, thirteen you. Know BUT i
Know Coach, popo you, know coaches really getting practice each
and every, day you, know find the find the lineups
that work best with each, other and you, know go from.

Speaker 2 (22:52):
There See larry val go ahead and you can calm,
Down larry walk calm.

Speaker 6 (22:56):
Down.

Speaker 3 (22:57):
NO i was just so that's a good, Job, Jess,
right let's do the singing something. There just trying to
throw that line out there and let you take. Debate
you didn't take a good good, job but tell me
a little. Bit you had kind of a unique event.
Yesterday tell me a little bit about how that event
went and if that's something you would like to do
more during the upcoming year At.

Speaker 5 (23:18):
Kentucky, yeah, yeah it.

Speaker 6 (23:21):
Was it was really, good you, know being that, pliable
meeting a lot of the, fans signing autographs for some
some some cool. People, man it's a lot of good
people in the in the city Of lexis and you
know who.

Speaker 5 (23:32):
Supported and you know people came from from other, places
other areas as.

Speaker 6 (23:35):
Well so just knowing how big the you, know beating
in fan base, is how much these people really care about, us,
uh each and every day is an amazing.

Speaker 3 (23:44):
Feeling is that something you would like to be able
to do, more you, know do again or a couple
of times or.

Speaker 5 (23:50):
Something, yeah, YEAH i was definitely.

Speaker 3 (23:52):
Good.

Speaker 6 (23:52):
AGAIN i feel like it's always good to you, know
go out and meet. People, uh you, know it's all
about networking and stuff like. That so hearing people's, difference
stories of fans and stuff like. That some people you,
know were fans of my father and telling me stories about,
that so it's always good to.

Speaker 5 (24:08):
Hear and so, YEAH i love to.

Speaker 2 (24:10):
Again and your dad was, like as you, stated your
dad was highly sought after when he stepped on. Campus
you haven't stepped on campus. Yet And i'm reading articles
That Mark pope is referring to you as a. Superstar
what kind of weight does that carry on?

Speaker 4 (24:23):
You?

Speaker 2 (24:23):
OR i mean you a lot like your. Dad nothing
really waivers, you and you ain't anything like your. Uncle
when you get, confident you just kind of seems to roll.

Speaker 5 (24:31):
Off.

Speaker 6 (24:33):
YEAH i MEAN i feel Like i've picked from both,
sides you, know my uncle and my.

Speaker 5 (24:37):
Father you Know Coach.

Speaker 6 (24:39):
Pope saying, THAT i, mean it means a lot, that you,
know my coach can believe in me and allow me
to be able to be ready for that, position in
that role that he's given. Me SO i know it's
a lot of work that's going to have to be
put into that before you, know the fans and the
game start. Happenence BUT i feel Like i'm confident in
myself AND i feel LIKE i can do. Anything and
my Coach, will you, know always wanted me to do his,

(25:01):
West SO i feel LIKE i can do that at
a high.

Speaker 2 (25:03):
Level and are you keeping?

Speaker 3 (25:06):
Ahead did it surprise you at? All?

Speaker 2 (25:09):
Jasper?

Speaker 3 (25:10):
Though when you Sell Mark, pope come out and use
the word to describe you as as a, superstar and
then followed it up a couple of days later saying
the most dangerous shooter in high school basketball last. YEAR
i mean those are pretty strong. Comments did it surprised
you that he came out that strong when he was
talking about?

Speaker 5 (25:26):
You, No, no it didn't surprise me at.

Speaker 6 (25:29):
ALL i, Mean Coach, pope you, know he's been telling
me that he sees that in my game since you,
know they wanted to meet. Him he's been to a
couple of my, games a lot of my games really
just just watching them with, me just making sure we
build that bond and aconnation that we.

Speaker 2 (25:44):
Have AND i just kind of wanted to really wanted to,
know you, know getting ready to go TO, uk we've
kind of rounded out the roster at this. Point are
you keeping track of on the? Roster are you reaching
out the, guys the guys reaching out to you seeing
us so we just Signed hawthorne or uh like SO
i guess the rosters a round. It are you keeping
a huge iron That are you concentrated on your game

(26:05):
and your? PRODUCTIVITY i, say.

Speaker 5 (26:10):
You know a little bit of.

Speaker 6 (26:11):
BOTH i MEAN i want to know the guys Who
i'm gonna be playing WITH i, MEAN i know Coach
pope and the interest of staff is handling the roster
situation and things like. That but, Yeah i'm also in the,
gym you, know every, day just trying to get get
to get, better get stronger and, faster work on my,
shooting my foot, speed just doing WHATEVER i can to
separate myself from from WHEN i was in high school

(26:32):
to that first day in.

Speaker 2 (26:33):
College is there any rest period from? ME i know
we talked to your dad a couple of weeks. Ago
is there any rest period between? Now because once you
get in that college, regimen man's, class, workout basketball, man it,
is it is gonna be. Gruel are you gonna take
a break before you actually get on campus and getting
this sec? Grind?

Speaker 6 (26:52):
Oh, YEAH i MEAN i feel LIKE i feel, like,
uh you, know me as a as a, PERSON i
don't really do. Much so you, know If I'm i'm
not working, Out i'm probably, Inside i'm probably.

Speaker 5 (27:02):
Sleeping you know a lot of the.

Speaker 6 (27:03):
Time SO i really feel, like you, know that's really
my day off kind, of you, know When i'm at home,
wrestling playing my. Game SO i, mean, like you, know
how my dad, is you, know always always working out every,
morning late nights when, whenever you, know he might just
come in my hoom and ten at night you want
to go To.

Speaker 5 (27:21):
Zoe SO i was, like, YEAH i, mean you know
how my.

Speaker 6 (27:25):
Dad, is but you, know definitely resting, sometimes you, know
WHEN i can going out to see my friends or
visiting my family and stuff like. That seeing my grandmother
going to her, house you know she loves to you,
know make me breakfast and. Stuff so going out spending
time with her half, like that's definitely some rest with.

Speaker 3 (27:40):
Me which asked for nothing better to going to missus
See Miss, ROSETTE i will say. That but speaking of,
rest you And malachi have both been invited to THE
usa basketball camp to try for the team that would
be going To sweeten later this In. June would be
a great honor to make the, team but but also

(28:00):
probably involved being gone from election probably close to a.
Month SO i know you've been. Invited are you going
to go ahead and go to the? Tryout are you
hoping to make the team or is that too long
to be away From lexington or you kind of still
trying to decide what you may or may not do about.

Speaker 6 (28:19):
THAT i Mean i'm not really sure. YET i Mean
i've talked To Coach pope about. It you, know he,
said if this is something that, you you, know you
really want to, do you want to go out.

Speaker 5 (28:30):
And make the team and go try to get a.
Medal you know you do.

Speaker 6 (28:34):
That but in his perfect, world you, know he would
like me, to you, know try to go to the three.

Speaker 5 (28:39):
Days you know he's going to be.

Speaker 6 (28:40):
An encore, Coach go there for the try out and you,
know then come home and be there for. Practice BUT
i mean He Coach pope talked to me, ultimately you,
know said it with my.

Speaker 5 (28:50):
Decision so IF i want to do, it you, know
go do. It but it's not. You he loves it as.
Well being.

Speaker 6 (28:56):
There being, away like you, said for close some, month you,
know can be a big learning pairer THAT i need
to you, know have you, know going into my first
year and.

Speaker 3 (29:05):
Does your dad and does your dad get a recruiting
bonus or something With Braiden hawthor since he Had braydon
come up and play At Woodford county and that showcase
event when none of us knew that a few months
later he might be coming To. KENTUCKY i, mean is
your dad kind of knows something the rest of us
don't ABOUT uk basketball.

Speaker 4 (29:23):
Recruiting, No i'm not.

Speaker 5 (29:26):
Here i'm not here about that. ONE i mean, now
But braden is a you, know a great.

Speaker 6 (29:31):
PLAYER i played him a couple of, times you, know
seeing his, growth uh from you, know the first Time
i've seen him like freshman.

Speaker 5 (29:37):
Year you, know his real, skin.

Speaker 6 (29:39):
He tall, kids and now you know he's feeling into his.
BODY i know he's going to be a great prospect for.

Speaker 2 (29:45):
Sure AND i was thinking, about you, know talk about
the business. Aspect you, know you got a lot of
things going, on a lot of decisions being. Made your,
Brother scholars is working on his, marketing AND i can't
help but to think of all the upsides you have
coming to. Knowledge BUT i can't help to think of
How lebron And maverick and all those guys stuck together
from high. School on what is relationship like with you And?

(30:08):
Scholar you, KNOW i guess advertised doing advertisement and marketing for,
you OR i guess he's doing it on his. Own
but you just happened to be his, brother so he's
how is that?

Speaker 5 (30:16):
Going, yeah, yes, sir it's been. Great you, know my
past season Overtime. Elie you, know my, brother.

Speaker 6 (30:24):
Me and him had an apartment down, there so so
staying with each other all, day every, day and it's been.

Speaker 3 (30:31):
GOOD i.

Speaker 5 (30:31):
Know he's he's he works a.

Speaker 6 (30:32):
Lot he works hard for, me you, know trying to
reach out to companies and stuff like, that talk to my. Agency,
SO i, mean he does a lot of stuff THAT
i don't really even know. About you, know he just
told me to focus on, basketball and he's made everything
around that easier for.

Speaker 2 (30:44):
Me he's not he's not a little. Brother you ain't
chumping you, are he ain't punking you making you do
a little stuff like that because you're quite a bit
bigger than he is as far AS i.

Speaker 5 (30:53):
Is, YEAH i.

Speaker 6 (30:56):
KNOW i mean every now and, then you, Know i'll
walk into it And i'll be, like, yeah you, Know
i'm big.

Speaker 5 (31:01):
Bro now you can't do nothing about. It he'll be, like,
nah but now that's. Good you get out and you,
know do different. Things.

Speaker 6 (31:08):
Uh He actually he runs and like this This atlanta
run club and you, know like ever since you, KNOW
i graduated or like the see it has been.

Speaker 5 (31:17):
Over he's, like you, know you need to come out
and run with. Me i'm, like, NO i don't.

Speaker 6 (31:21):
Know long distance run is not my, thing but you,
know he's trying to help me prepare for you, know
my conditioning and stuff like that going into. College and
he even running like five six miles you know a
day if, LIKE i don't know about that, one BUT
i go out and do it with him every now
and then and he helped me do it my conditioning
up for.

Speaker 3 (31:38):
SURE ja for you talked about his work with your
agency at all recently you changed, agencies to talk a
little bit about that, decision what it's already been like
being with the group who you are, now and maybe
about the tripute you went out To california with.

Speaker 6 (31:56):
Them, yeah, yeah moved TO.

Speaker 5 (32:00):
Cia was was very good for.

Speaker 6 (32:02):
ME i, think, uh you, know bigger, agency one of
the best, agencies if not the best.

Speaker 5 (32:07):
Agency in the.

Speaker 6 (32:08):
World you, know we're all different types of, athletes actresses
and stuff like.

Speaker 5 (32:12):
That SO i know they, can you, know get into
a lot of rooms that a lot of people.

Speaker 6 (32:16):
Can't for, me you, know When i'm you, know going
into college and you, know trying to go to THE,
NBA i know that they. Can they have multiple players
in THE nba that you, know have max contracts that
are all, stars superstars and stuff like. That so you,
know going out To cality and working, out you, know
with a lot of pro players and seeing them in the,

(32:36):
gym and you, know it's kind of.

Speaker 5 (32:38):
Crazy it's kind of surreal.

Speaker 2 (32:39):
Really and my last question for, you what is your
perspected date of arrival? Here because you've got so much
stuff going, on you could probably get off a plane
and just show up and show up at the Crafts
and what is your perspective date of? Arrivals did the
first day of school and in the fall or earlier.

Speaker 5 (32:59):
All my, Dad, ROBIL i think it's gonna Be june.

Speaker 6 (33:02):
FIFTH i think first practice Is june, sixth SO i
Mean i'll be.

Speaker 5 (33:07):
HOME i Think i'll be Home june. First, uh you,
know THEN i worked out and you.

Speaker 6 (33:12):
Know build it, up and Then i'll go home campus
At june.

Speaker 3 (33:15):
Fifth and my life thing would be a gester since
Obviously i've known your family forever AND i saw recently
about how you had the tattoo of your grandfather. THERE i,
MEAN i Love. DAVIS i don't THINK i could probably
get a tattoo Of alvis, Myself but just walk me
through a little bit about what what went through your

(33:36):
mind to do, that and again what impact he's had
on your career and maybe it's still even have it
now that he's not with.

Speaker 5 (33:44):
Us, yeah he is. THERE i mean my, grandfather you,
know it was one of the many people who really
introduced me into the sports.

Speaker 6 (33:52):
PERIOD i, MEAN i, know he coached my dad and
my uncle and really a lot Of. Harrisburg and every
TIME i go, back everybody's telling me about how great
he was as a person.

Speaker 2 (34:03):
And as a.

Speaker 5 (34:04):
Coach SO i, MEAN i know he's living through, me,
uh watching. Me he's in every.

Speaker 6 (34:09):
DAY i know he's he's in the back of my
mind every TIME i go out on the court or
really do.

Speaker 5 (34:13):
Anything so, UH i, mean my grandfather was a great, man.

Speaker 6 (34:16):
And he left a great, legacy you, know AND i
hope you can see you to carry that, Well jef.

Speaker 3 (34:23):
And and your grandfather and father both just recently been
announced going to go into the First mercier Conta Athletic
hall Of fame, Class so that's a great honor.

Speaker 2 (34:32):
For both of. Them, well Jasper, man we appreciate you
joining us this. Morning. Man keep working, out, man keep your,
head keep your head going. On BUT i will tell
you this before we get off OF i know you

little brother thought he got a little bigger than me
and he had to get. Tested, man y'all gonna have
to y'all going to figure it out one time because

(34:53):
y'all gonna get too. Old, yeah and one of the
family functions is gonna go, Down so y'all need to

Speaker 2 (35:09):
Me we'll be back after. This you're Listening Stockyards Bank
Sunday Morning Sports talk on News radio six THIRTY.

Speaker 1 (35:14):
Wlap this is the home of The. Wildcats six thirty W.
Lap welcome Back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports. Talk I'm
Anthony white along With Larry.

Speaker 2 (35:26):
Vault thanks TO uk sign EE uk basketball Signee Jasper
johnson for join. Us he'll be on campus and the
next week and a half he will be on campus
to partake in OUR uk basketball camps and get things rolled.
On Larry, Vaught Mark pope is a great basketball. Coach
he's a great, recruiter but the one AND i Think

(35:49):
cal probably brought high, standard high quality, guys but the
guys that he's A pope is bringing in kind of
resemble and reflect what he. Is a high quality the
guy you, Know jasper obviously respect no lesson from.

Speaker 3 (36:04):
Him, yeah of, course Obviously i'm very biased About, jasper
just like you.

Speaker 4 (36:10):
Are but just.

Speaker 3 (36:11):
Sitting here thinking back a couple of years, ago we
don't want to Have jasper on with us for twenty
minutes or twenty five minutes on the, RADIO i don't
he'd probably run the other. Way he would have done,
it but he, would but he wouldn't embrace. It now
it just sounds so grown and so mature and so.
Polished it's really good to see what he has become
and WHAT i think he's still gonna. BECOME i, MEAN

(36:33):
i think the things That Mark pope has thrown out
there in the last couple of weeks when you're talking
About jasper has been, high high, praise but obviously doesn't Phasee,
jasper and he's okay with. That And i'm really really
anxious to see how he'll develop At, kentucky what his
role is BUT i still think he's going to be,

(36:53):
really really. Good and JUST i still think back to
the time a few years back when his grandfather called
and told me that you have was time for him
to give up. Football AND i, thought my, Lord Alvas
jeohan never thought you wouldn't let you would Let. Dennis
you don't give up. Anything you, Know dennis could have
maybe played professional. BASEBALL i still believe. That But alic
wanted to run track play. Football BUT i guess AND

(37:16):
i know it's just different with. Grandsids but when he
told me that you have a jast was so, good
he just need to give up football and cuts straight on,
BASKETBALL i, thought, MAN i never thought i'd hear those
words out Of Alvis johnson's. Mouth but once, again my
Friend alvis knew what he was talking.

Speaker 2 (37:29):
About, yeah AND i want to See jasper's success here At.
Kentucky and one, thing one. QUESTION i only got about
a minute, left But jack spoke earlier About. OTAGA i
want to see our lineup is because if he's relied
on heavily as a, freshman WHICH i think you, Know
Mark pope is good on spreading the weight around the
team where not one person has a lot of weight on.

(37:50):
Him BUT i think If otaga comes, back then there's
going to be a whole Lot are you are you With?
Jack and do you know what the number would it?
Be do you know what the number is that would
Convince otaga to come? Back it's like four million dollars or.
Something you are?

Speaker 5 (38:04):
You?

Speaker 3 (38:04):
Are?

Speaker 2 (38:05):
You are you different From? Jack and think he may
just stay in the.

Speaker 3 (38:08):
DRAFT i don't think he will. STAY i think the
money figures, sometimes just based on some people WHO i
know helped, CONTRIBUTE i think those money figures sometimes get
a little inflated from what they Really it's still a,
lot a lot more any BUT i don't think it's
quite as high sometimes that's what we, think and that
may be Why otega is just kind of waiting to

(38:30):
the last to make sure about what he's what he's.
Doing BUT i think when all said and, done he'll
be back At kentucky for another.

Speaker 2 (38:38):
Year when we come, back we will Have Brittany harrison
to talk about THE, tbt The Basketball tournament Lat, familia
which is FORMER uk basketball, players, coaches, players everybody coming
together one last. Time we will Have brittany on when
