Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk, presented by
the lead troop Bard Radio Network on six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Welcome in Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I'm Anthony
White along with Larry Vaught and Jack Pilgrim, coming to
you from Clerk's Main Street Markets Studios in downtown Lexington, Kentucky. Guys,
there's a lot been going on. Women in basketball came together.
(00:31):
And it's not to be sound as if sexist comment
because we love coach Brooks and we love women's basketball
as well as men's basketball. But when you don't play
the sport and you're involved with man's basketball you're a woman,
then that's a pretty interesting topic. UK football it's still
trending in a certain direction. We'll talk about that, but
(00:53):
before we get to that, Jack Pilgrim, how's your weekend?
Speaker 3 (00:56):
Ben? How's your weekend? In a total?
Speaker 4 (00:58):
Ben?
Speaker 5 (01:01):
You know it's actually great because I can't be hurt anymore.
It's just, you know, you you wake up knowing exactly
what your day is going to look like, you know
exactly what the result is gonna be, so you like,
you can't you can't be hurt if you're already broken.
So that's that's that's that's how I woke up on Saturday,
and you know, the day ended up being, you know,
(01:22):
beautiful outside. Got to enjoy some good playtime outside with
the kiddo's and you know they're starting to embrace spooky
season and all the Halloween decorations and all that. So
it's it's actually been a beautiful, beautiful weekend and it's
only going to continue here on this beautiful Sunday. And
it's it's starting with with hearing your your lovely voice
(01:42):
this morning. So Anthony, life couldn't be better.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
Well, I'm glad to have you and that is enlightening.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
Every time we come on this show, I think about
how am I gonna smile you say something. Then when
I think about the little kiddo's growing up, just no
cares in the world, just eat any to put anything
in their mouth. And you know what's so I appreciate
hearing from you as well, Jack Larry Vaught yourself, how
was your week? Bed, Well, I guess you're still in
You're not even in the state.
Speaker 6 (02:10):
No, I'm still in Saint Augustine getting ready to head
home today. So I'll start off with the news that'll
make you feel good, if you'll start out with some
feel good. Yes, I've I got to participate over the
weekend and the pink Up the Pace five k here
in Saint Augustine that I've done for the last eight
or nine years. It raises money for breast cancer awareness
(02:31):
in a little bit different way because it helps fun
exams and treatment for those who may not have the
money to go and seek treatment if they didn't have
some extra help. So it's about twenty five hundred entries
I help up for the last seven eight years now,
I've helped with packet pick Up get to work with
a group of graduate students from Saint Augustine College, so
(02:54):
it's really fun to do that. I'll be around them
for those six or seven hours on Friday. Run the race, well,
I finished the race. Run the race probably a little
strong words at my age now to say, but I
got through the three miles. We had a little bit
of rain, high tides flooded a couple of the streets
in downtown Saint Augustine, but maybe through it was just
(03:15):
a wonderful, wonderful time. Now, if you want the reality
of the situation, I have some folks. A family that
came in from Georgia here on Friday night, staying two
doors down for me. Got two little boys, probably in
the ages five to seven, I would say, a daughter
probably ten or eleven. Very nice couple. They're on fall
(03:37):
break this next week. So I was just talking to
them and told them I was for Kentucky. He said, yeah,
I'm going to watch the Kentucky Georgia football game this afternoon.
I saw him yesterday morning and they said, well, we're not.
I said, oh, really said yeah, we're going to go
to the beach because you know, you know Georgia Wayne
Kentucky didn't Kaky can't even stay close with Georgia. I thought, wow,
that kind of hurts, but you know, it's kind of
(03:58):
the reality of where things are.
Speaker 7 (03:59):
Right.
Speaker 6 (04:00):
Yes, that family as much watch went to the beach
and even bother to watch the gate. And they're Georgia fans.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
Dang, and Georgia fans are usually nice, you know, slacks
sid or for football for years, and I mean years,
like fifteen sixteen. I've been they typically I don't know
if it's her birthday, something goes on around the Georgia
game time all and she has a party. I haven't
been in over ten years, but there's always Georgia fans
(04:28):
there or just random Georgia fans. They're really nice, really complementary,
so you know that is just Georgia people. So I've
always known Georgia fans to be really well and I've
been at some tailgates with the Griers from London and
then the Georgia people. There'd be more red over there
and there will blue, just because they're so so fun.
(04:50):
But I've never been outside of Athens to a game.
I've only been inside between the hedges, so I don't
know what the tailgates are like if you go down there.
But so now that we got all the pleasantries and
the good things out of the way, Oh, before we
get to the bad news, Larry Vaught, Jack Pilgrim, bul Robinson,
apparently our buddy Kyle Macy, and thank you to the
(05:13):
City of Lexington and everyone who showed up last week,
because apparently Kyle Macy had a great showing, show up,
show out, and did a great job with the with
the books that he almost he's almost out of books,
so how's he gonna finish his tour?
Speaker 6 (05:28):
Larry Well, I think they're trying to negotiate with the
publisher who apparently has some stacked away just won't get
on to them, which seems kind of odd. But they're
trying to get with the publisher to get them more books.
But yeah, they basically sold out of their inventory last
Sunday afternoon. It's so way more than they were anticipating.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
So see, that is pretty good. There.
Speaker 8 (05:49):
For the majority of the two hours, Kyle was signing
books and taking pictures, and it was a steady stream
of fans coming in, getting bucks, getting pictures, and it
was just really awesome to see. And a few people
even told me, hey, I heard about Kyle being at
McLeod's on Sunday morning sports talk. That made me feel
(06:09):
even better, So thank you for listening. But it was good.
A lot of people had a great time just reminiscing
about the seventy eight team and Kyle Macy and they
even had the seventy eight National Championship game on the
TV there in the coffee house. It was a good time.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
Could the staff keep because if then I used to
that type of crowd and that type of mainly most
of them are I guess we're getting book signed and
talking to Kyle, but.
Speaker 8 (06:35):
Oh he was all hands on deck. But yeah, the
staff kept up with serving the coffee behind the counter.
And then I helped out a little bit with Kyle
and his book signing and I was taking pictures. So yeah,
it went fine.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (06:49):
Actually Anthony went on our show, got over Chris ring
a Kentucky branded contact me, want me to get some
information to him about putting books out of the Kentucky
branded outlets, And a little bit later they let me know,
well they wish they could, but right now they didn't
have a book.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
Wow, so what if we So what if now that
you know how Jordan's come out, you may not wear Jordan's.
I've never seen you wear Jordan's, but you know on
shoe days that some of the Jordan brand schools, their
coaches always have on Jordan's.
Speaker 3 (07:18):
Or Air Force or air Ones.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
Air Jordan ones those are the ones kind of like
Air Force's low tops, and you can get them in
all different colors that once they come out, they may
come out at one hundred and fifty, one hundred and
seventy something if you can find them. But if you
don't get them and they run out and you got
to get them on the black market. Then you're paying
three to five hundred, Larry, So maybe we can we
can get the publishers to bring out some more and
(07:44):
then we can raise charge more and the proceeds can
go to another someone that Kyle Macy supports.
Speaker 6 (07:54):
That sounds like a good idea.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
We'll put you in charge of that.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
Anthony, Well, I got to get my cut because I'm
a pretty busy guy.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
Man, We're a pretty busy guy.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
But let's get to the reason that we are here
this morning, and it's not the only reason.
Speaker 3 (08:08):
We talk all sports.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
So if you decided to call in, we don't take
calls in the first hour, but in the first segment,
but you can call eight five nine two eight zero
two two eight seven eight five nine to eight zero Cats,
And we mainly talk about the thirty five fourteen loss
down in Athens, our Caps lost to Georgia Bulldogs. But
(08:29):
Larry vaugh there is I don't want to talk about
it immediately. I wait till the next segment. But there's
some rumors going around. I'm kind of curious that's what
you think, because I've been talking to some people who
know ball and people who know people and the Mark Stoops,
And I will say this, Mark Stoops a post game
interview irritated me for the first time ever. Like I
(08:53):
usually can get behind him and try to support him,
but some of the things and the way he says,
some of the things he said, like he's getting irritated,
like he's being bothered. And I think our fan base
has felt that many times. I didn't because I just
knew how. I know how hard it is to coach,
I know how hard it is to get young guys
to carry out your plan and execute. But when you
(09:14):
talk about things that have nothing to do with football
and you are putting this position, I think that you
should be sympathetic that this team sucks, and if someone
asked you a question about your team, don't get offended
or change it. And so there's some things I did
want to talk about, But I will tell you this,
Larry bar I don't know about Bo Robinson and Jack Pilgrim.
(09:35):
I'm actually broken. For years, I've tried to find silver lining,
try to support the team, and I definitely still support
the team, but I'm broken. I can't I can't wake
up and believe. I don't know if you're Jack really Jack,
I don't know. I guess now you don't believe anymore.
(09:56):
And that's why you say you woke up and not
worrying and out caring. But I'm actually he broke at
this point. I don't see a way for us to recover,
and so I'm broken because I don't think this coaching
staff is going to get it turned around. And I
uh and I think the players are doing the best
they can make a lot of mistakes, but there's just
some things that happen in the in the game, guys
line up in the wrong side of the field, you
(10:18):
send them to the other side of the field. Then
you say you had to send them to the other
side of the field because the play can only win
one direction, like the play only runs one direction.
Speaker 3 (10:28):
So why when you broke the huddle? Did everybody?
Speaker 2 (10:31):
And I know that, But you sent them from one
side of the field to the other side of the field.
So was the first side of the field the original
side of the field? It just looked like it just
looked like Keystone Cops. Again, another week in which people
have been saying all along, I tried to give them
the benefit of the doubt, but Jack pilgrind I'm broken, buddy.
Speaker 5 (10:51):
If we've been talking about hype trains and whether you're
one foot off one foot on, I've been. I've been
telling you that I have been off and and you
were trying to convince us to jump back on. So
you're you're bandwagon is full on this side.
Speaker 8 (11:08):
Unfortunately, you know, we like to make the comparison about
getting the jeloppy out of the garage. Guess what's happened
over the last few weeks to me, and you used
the correct word. My garage door has been broken.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
Oh wow.
Speaker 8 (11:23):
And that is the exact way I feel about Kentucky
football right now. And I said that yesterday. I'm broken
as a fan and I don't know if there's any
getting back to it where this at least in my lifetime.
I told Jack this before we went on the air.
How do we get over the hump? And I just
don't see it happening. We were there a few years ago,
(11:44):
but now look where we're at again.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
Larry Vaught, can we've done this show together for a
long time?
Speaker 3 (11:52):
Is there anything you could say to me?
Speaker 2 (11:53):
Have you ever have you ever heard me sound defeated
or broke about any of our programs?
Speaker 3 (11:58):
Really No.
Speaker 6 (12:01):
You're usually the most optimistic, and I always bow to
your expertise because you played the game. You look at
things from a different perspective than that a lot of
us do because we haven't been out there like what
you are. So it does kind of surprise me that
you were to this point. I mean, as Jack said,
I think Jack and I have kind of been leaning
(12:23):
this way, and you've been trying to chastise us and
bring us back the other direction. We just were kind
of a wait and see and hoping you were going
to be right, but thinking there's not a change in
the world, you were going to be right. It's also
interesting what you said about the post game remarks because
I listened to some of that and thought, what the
hell is he saying and why is he saying? As
I mean, I was hoping you could explain to Jack
(12:45):
and I why you call a play but it can't
work because the balls in the center of the field.
Well you knew the balls in the center of the field.
Why can't a play when you say it can only
go one direction if you're in the center of the field,
can't you go either left or right equally? Well, because
you got as much room on one side as you
do the other. So you're gonna have to explain that
to Jack and I. And also the clock management at
(13:06):
the end of the first half was so awful. And
then to say after the game, well, didn't to make
it there was that wasn't the reason we missed the field.
Speaker 1 (13:14):
Go No, it wasn't.
Speaker 6 (13:15):
But if you'd had twenty more seconds to get around
three more plays, you might have got the damn touchdown.
I mean, come on, Mark, I don't know what was
going through his mind, but he he The postgame radio
network would show with Tom he said some things. If
he could have to do overs today, surely, to god
he'd want to take back what he said.
Speaker 3 (13:34):
I'm not certain about that.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
I think he's just frustrated and now he may feel
like I feel like I don't know what to do
with these group of guys. I will say this, and
then we're going to head to break. I will say
about the management. The craziest thing about it, Jack and Larry,
it happens at the same point for years. It has
been happening right before the half with thirty with fifty
(13:56):
seconds or less. Just something's just so the wire get crossed.
All of a sudden, like you call you so you
had this certain place set up for the end of
the half, but it's happened.
Speaker 3 (14:05):
Every week every year.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
So I don't like what changes you know in the
one minute drill going into the half, like what changes
that make the wires get crossed? Maybe the players get flustered,
but I don't think the players get flustered because all
they do is run the play that you sent in.
They don't have to do anythinking. They say, okay, this play,
I line up here, I do this, I do this.
But we will continue this conversation when we come back.
You are listening to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk
(14:30):
on news radio six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 1 (14:32):
This is Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk, presented by
the lead Troop Barge Radio Network on six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 2 (14:43):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I'm Anthony White,
along with Jack Pilgrim and Larry Vaut. Stockyards Bank has
been your trusted partner since nineteen hundred and four, so
head on over to syb dot com for all of
your banking and financial needs. I know that you probably
(15:05):
wererun on the bandwagon.
Speaker 3 (15:06):
Jack Pilgrim.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
But watching the game yesterday, and we only have to
do this because this is a show that talks about sports,
and that was the biggest sport we've had this week
because volleyball was off.
Speaker 3 (15:19):
And I don't know what people are upset.
Speaker 2 (15:21):
You're upset, but or you may not be upset because
what happens what you expected. But Connor Bowley is learning
some He's limited in some areas. I think he's learning
a lot. Cameron Miller showed up out of nowhere. Well,
I don't know if there's nowhere. I've never heard of him,
but he was three for three. They target him three times,
he caught three of them boys for forty one yards.
(15:41):
You know, while that was happening, Jamory Macklin was targeted
seven times, only caught two of them. Harley Gillmore was
targeted five times, only caught three. So maybe we're answering
some questions. Don't get me wrong. I don't have faith
that we're going to get this thing back together. But
you know, there's still some good things that happened, A
(16:02):
couple of good things, excluding Seth McGowan got hurt, but
I think Cutter Bowley was hurt in the third quarter,
he seemed to limp around and looked like he was
agonizing pain half half the second half. I don't understand
why we didn't just but I think he needs the
(16:23):
reps to get better, but not I'm not certain why
we didn't, you know, go with somebody else, preserved from
injury or any more of the beating we were taking.
But what's the worst part of our the best parks
is you didn't seem to have much faith in this Jack.
But what was irritated the most about the game?
Speaker 5 (16:44):
Well, and it was the fourth So we found a
receiver who can actually get separation and make plays. But
that's just par for the course with this the staff
that just has no idea what it's doing, and now
thirteen years running, making the exact same errors over and
(17:05):
over and over again, that when asked about it gets
defensive and it's just it's the same song and dance
every single week. And yes, as Larry said, some of
the things that he said that he'll probably want to
take back or not because he's cashing checks. And at
this point, what difference does it make. He can say
whatever he wants and just you know, go home and
drink a glass of bourbon and kick his legs up
(17:27):
and enjoy the ride. Because he's a top fifteen paid
coach in college football and has no penalty or punishment
for any of his ongoing results. So what difference does
it make whatever he says after the fact. So yeah,
it's just a slap in the face that, you know,
for the very first time since the Joker Phillips era,
I turned on my television for a Kentucky football game
(17:50):
and said, well, let's get this over with.
Speaker 3 (17:52):
And that's just sad. It's a pathetic.
Speaker 5 (17:55):
Way to live as a as a Kentucky football fan.
For yes, the high that we have been able to
achieve and get to a point in this program where yes,
he's the winningest coach in the history of Kentucky football,
and that's an amazing thing. But once he got paid
accordingly for that, the downfall back to where things were
(18:17):
when he took over. And that's what's so funny is,
you know, when we started griping about the ongoing results
and he started getting into the defensive well, do you
remember where things were when I first took over? Do
we want to get back to that? It's like, little
did we know the longer that you stuck around the closer.
We got back to that era. So yes, we are
(18:37):
officially back to the Joker Phillips era of Kentucky football.
Except he's not making one point five million dollars a
year of whatever Joker was making. He is a top
fifteen paid coach in college football to lead a bottom
fifteen program in college football.
Speaker 2 (18:52):
Let's hurry up really quickly and get to the phone
lines and see what Josh Short has to say. Good morning,
Josh Short, what do you got for us? I'm sorry
to do it. We ain't got in a lot of time,
but we want to hear from you.
Speaker 9 (19:04):
I know it was not a great game, yes, but
we're about saying we'll be Texas by Tim Biggins. I
know far to beat Texas. Yes, and all balls we
did play Friday. We need be Mississippi. Three games and
nothing in volleyball.
Speaker 3 (19:16):
Absolutely, we were off most of the week.
Speaker 9 (19:21):
Yeah, and we want to. I mean, we beat James
Man has sought. Let me let me tell you high
camer some conference in time. We should be the Southeast
and conference and every sport there shouldn't be in another
conference in another sport.
Speaker 3 (19:34):
It's weird conferences.
Speaker 9 (19:36):
Go ahead, So we want to be in Southeast Conference
in all sports, not just service sports.
Speaker 3 (19:42):
Yes, it's weird when that happens.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
And uh, we got Vanderbilt today here in Lexington, so
you can you can check that out on the SEC network. Plus, uh,
John Short, appreciate the call, John Shore. We will continue this
show when we come back. You're listening Stockyards Bank Sunday
Morning Sports Talk on news radio six thirty w l
A B.
Speaker 1 (20:00):
This is Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk presented by
the Lead Troop Barge Radio Network on six thirty w LAP.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk. I'm Anthony
White along with Jack Pilgrim and Larry Vaught. This hour
Sunday Morning Sports Talk is brought to you by a
country boy brewing Larry and Jack. The phone lines are
starting to warm up. They're getting a little hot, so
we're gonna get there. But before we go there, Larry,
you brought up Van House, who was my co hosts
(20:33):
on our weekly podcast on Wednesday nights. And this is
I'm not gonna I'm not gonna let you respond, but
I think you're gonna find this interesting. Last week we
broke down the film of the South Carolina game and
we found some we found some chinks in our armor.
(20:55):
So we kind of pointed out there are some consistencies
and played by so players and there's some consistencies in
coaching on certain aspects of the game. One player's name
kept coming up in the video evidence if we were
in the film room, and that's what we called it,
the film room, when we break down the film that
we've been in. As if you stated we've been on
the field, we've been in film room. We made bad plays.
(21:17):
We made good plays. But if you make a bad play,
it stands out because you know you messed up. If
you do it once or twice, your teammates laugh, we're gone.
If you do it ten twenty times, then it becomes
a habit, it becomes a problem. People start looking at
you funny. So, long story short, there was a player
that kept being out of position. You couldn't tell based
(21:39):
off the schemes. We couldn't tell what was going on.
And there's some mother in color bowl. He missed a
lot of so that everybody was being talked about the
very next afternoon evening ish said player follows one of
the people on our podcast.
Speaker 3 (21:57):
I guess too either keep an eye.
Speaker 2 (22:00):
On what's being said about him or honestly, I don't
know two or he actually watching it to learn. But
he shouldn't be watching our film break Down to learn,
because I'm sure Brad White and Mike Stoops and those
guys break down what happens. The player was a linebacker
that did the following. So it was just interesting to
(22:21):
me that after a film session from some random Joe
some has beens break down some film, you decide to
follow follow people as if maybe, and that was my take,
maybe they want to learn, or maybe they want to
see what's being said about them, But when we say
good things about people, they don't follow us. So anyways,
(22:44):
let's get to the phone lines and see what Don
has to say. Good morning, Don saved me, Please tell
me something good.
Speaker 4 (22:51):
Good morning, gentlemen. I'm an old fan and I'm making
a call that don't want to make. This is the
first time I've ever called any radio program Anthony. I
love your commentary. I love the way you respect and
(23:12):
love your mother, Larry. I have appreciated you for decades,
and you've got a lot better hair than I do.
But I'm the same age as you are. Jack, your commentary,
as well as Bow's, is very much appreciated by this
old fan and Van Hiles I love you, I love
(23:36):
your detail. But gentlemen, I've got to tell you what
I would tell Mark Stoops if I was setting down
across the table from him, and I would say, Coach,
I appreciate what you've done for this program. I know
(23:58):
you are a man of an integrity. I know that
our fan base knows that we know what you're about.
But I was a boy scout ushering UK football and
basketball games in nineteen sixty five before the Committee of
(24:19):
one oh one was ever even established. They were established
in sixty six. That's the blue that's the blue jacket. Sorry,
I'm a little nervous. I don't normally do this, and
I remember getting soaking wet at Stall Field watching a
Vanderbilt football game. Uh that's how far back I go.
(24:42):
But coach, if you have integrity, and we know you do,
I would just ask you to polease. And Jack alluded
to this a few minutes ago. If you know, let's
face it, if you can ain't take care of yourself
and one or two future generations of your family with
(25:06):
the money that you've been paid by the university, deservedly
so in many years. Then I don't understand that. But
please don't hold the fan base and the University of
Kentucky hostage for this big, albeit legal binding contract, and
(25:27):
give us the opportunity to move on, sir, And that
is exactly what I would ask Coach Mark Stoops. Thank you, gentlemen.
I appreciate all of you. Have a great morning. I
love the show.
Speaker 2 (25:44):
Thank you for the call, Don And just for the record,
you did a good job for your first time. You
spoke clearly, you didn't go off tangent. You stay stuck
to the subject. And that was one of the things
that was going to come up on this show. Some
of those rumors that maybe that discussion may have been
had with Barnhart, and it was odd the way it
(26:06):
was worded to me and everybody else talked to. Doesn't
make sense that Mark Stoops and you know Mitch Barnhart
had a discussion about his contract renegotiating or anything. Jack Pilgrim,
I don't know if you like to speculate comment or
have heard any rumors, but here's the thing, and this
is something that a lot of people bring up and
(26:28):
I think a lot of people may or may not care.
And Jack Pilgrim, I don't know if it bothers you
or not, but people keep talking about the contract he's
being paid. So I always ask people, would you mind
if you renegotiated down to seven million? Or yeah, I
mean it'd have to be seven just because how long
he's been coaching here, Like, I don't think you go
less than seven. But Jack Pilgrim, all that money is
(26:51):
not going to his pocket. And that's why Jack, wherever
you are, take it from Larry Vaut. I don't know
how long Larry's been married. Maybe fifty I have no
idea fifty one.
Speaker 6 (27:02):
Oh really, yeah, don't get that wrong.
Speaker 2 (27:08):
Sorry, sorry, miss vaugh I didn't mean to slight you.
I didn't mislight you. But with that comes responsibility. Jack
Pilgrim and Mark Steups does not put all that money
in his pockets. So if you take half of the
way for taxes, you take another half away from bad
decisions he's probably only made. He's probably only banking two two,
(27:30):
between two and three million, Jack pilt, how does that
make you feel?
Speaker 5 (27:35):
I don't care about the what the actual number is
that he's pocketing. I care about how it is in
relation to everybody else that he's that that is making
the same level of salary and the lack of results
in that resulting salary. I don't care what goes into
his bank account. What I care that he is a
ranked tied for eleventh in college football right now in
(28:00):
total total salary and the results being what they are,
one of his last one in twelve against his last
thirteen Power Conference opponents. Eight straight losses against SEC opponents,
just absolutely pathetic results for a guy getting paid as
much as he has. So whether it's a dollar or
nine million dollars that goes into his pocket, I don't care.
(28:21):
It's what the salary is compared to his peers in
the sport. And my frustration with it is in like
what I don't think he necessarily understands right now, if
he's kind of just gloating at the podium, going I
don't want to talk about that crap no more, bringing
up the even possibility of him getting bought out and
(28:42):
just all of all these things, is he's actively like
destroying his legacy every time he talks into a microphone
about this stuff like he does realize that we are
two three years removed from statue conversation saying that, hey,
he's the greatest coach to ever come through Kentucky football,
and we will happily display a statue outside of Kroger
(29:06):
Field honoring your legacy of what you've been able to
accomplish in historic ways at the University of Kentucky every
single year, not even year, but game removed from that.
As he's tanking it over and over and over, driving
this program deeper into the ground, he's destroying all of
(29:26):
the good will that he did establish over the first
decade ish that he was here in Lexington. So like, yeah,
he can gloat about how much money he's making and
I'm not taking a penny less and what I'm owed.
That's what the contract I signed. Yeah, that's great, But
also remember that there's an ego involved in this, and
every college football coach that's ever done it has some
(29:47):
type of ego. And if his legacy at the end
of the day going to be, hey, well, at least
I got a lot of cash out of this. You know,
people do this for the love of the game that
they want to be known as something in the record
books that they want to have a legacy that they'll
tell their grandchildren and great grandchildren about what they were
(30:08):
able to accomplish in lexicon? Do we want this conversation?
It is he was a run out of town because
he embarrassed himself and you know, didn't know when to
say when like it's it's the lack of reading the
room and understanding the pulse of the fan base right now.
If he's sitting on his throne of cash, that is
why the fan base is as frustrated as it is.
Speaker 2 (30:30):
Let's get back to the phone lines and see what
Alvin has to say.
Speaker 3 (30:33):
Good morning, Alvin, what do you got for us?
Speaker 7 (30:36):
Hey, you guys, how you doing up? I think the
last caller done the chronology of football UK football for him,
that it goes back to nineteen sixty five, and there
probably is a remnant of fans out there that seeing
the good and bad days of UK football.
Speaker 10 (30:54):
And I think we usual a caller that's been following
the program for over sixty years or so that if
he calls and express his frustration about the coach in
the way that the program is playing, then you could
only imagine those It's Jack Gilgram's age and younger, and
that goes up to me.
Speaker 7 (31:14):
And Larry's age and the guy that just got off
the phone that the frustrating, frustrating frustration is mounting. Then
we do a chronology of a coach stoops. We continue
to be hopeful that he would be able to bring
in a unit that will win important SEC games that
(31:35):
he's not been able to do. That has always been
controversy regarding the curlsale of offensive coordinators that's come in
and left. There's always been trouble with the quarterback under
centered not connecting with the offensive coordinator patterns of offensive schemes.
So yeah, it's turned into a very uncomfortable situation for
(31:59):
those that follow football in the Big Blue Nation. So
the question is is that Rich Brooks done a good
job and we never had any critical comments about that fellow.
I think he doesn't get mentioned enough when we talk
about the UK coaches. They coach their Commonwealth stadium in
(32:20):
now Krogerfield. So I guess my brother thought he is,
is that do we take and say we just got
to move on? Jack Pilgrim said it best. I don't
kie if you're making ten million, eleven million or two
million after taxes that you got to take and get
this program competitive like Vanderbilts, the Indiana's even the Georgia Tech.
(32:45):
Do we go out and try to find a guy
that can jump start the program and get us back
in competitive ways to at least go to a bowl
game as the first of the year, a better bowl game,
and maybe even compete and maybe have common saying about
getting into a playoff spot. Because in this age of football,
his competitors is not gonna be those teams on the field.
(33:07):
His competitors. Pretty soon, he's gonna be nil o dollars,
people giving money and a fan base that is this
is on far right now. So those are his competitors
as well. So Anthony White, what is the remedy to
get this football program back on to removal away from
coach Stoops?
Speaker 2 (33:28):
Thank you for the call album We Got to Hit
a Break. We will discuss that. I think that'll be
a lot of the show. I guess not so much really.
The removal of what is with our the next steps
is their possibility some of the rumors going around, maybe
Larry knows something. We'll discuss that when we come back.
You are listening to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk
on News Radio six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 1 (33:49):
This is Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk, presented by
the lead Triport Radio Network on six thirty w LAP.
Speaker 2 (33:59):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk on Anthony
White along with Jack Pilgrim and Larry Vaught. Guys, no
cause this segment because I'm trying to catch up on
some of these things, and Larry Vaught didn't give you
really a chance to speak as to the rumors and
(34:20):
the situation and the rumors as far as if Mark
Stoops has talked to Barnhardt about contract renegotiations or whatever
whatever the problem is.
Speaker 3 (34:34):
And I'm with you.
Speaker 2 (34:36):
I know we talked a little bit off air, and
you know everybody's been talking about it, and I'm kind
of as Jack said, if someone asked you about your
contract negotiations, which all this is public and has been
made quite clear that the fan base at this point
is not happy with the product or what you're being
paid for the product, why not just say that's not true,
(35:01):
it didn't happen, or pull the book a Bill Belichick
or a Mark Stoops where you know, we're trying to
get this thing back on track. You're really not trying
to get it back on track. Because Larry Vaughan, if
you watched last week's show South Carolina game, Jamari Macklin
lines up, the quarterback is looking at Jamurray Macklin. Jamary
(35:21):
Macklin starts doing his hands with his palms up, like
what are you talking about? So he looks to the sideline.
Someone says something, so him and the quarterback are looking
at each other, like do you know what the heck
you're doing? So the clock is running down, so Jamariy
Macklin gets in this position, he runs in motion all
the way across the field and just stands there. So
obviously he did not know. I don't know if he
didn't know what the play was called. I don't know
(35:43):
if he knew what he was I don't I'm not
blaming Jamary Macklin. I'm saying this is happening on national
TV in the SEC and one with the power for
program that a players out there. I mean, typically you
call time out, but you typically don't break the hum
without knowing what you're supposed to do. And I've said
this for years. Somebody can get hurt if you're sinner
(36:05):
or any offensive lineman don't know what to do or
don't know who to block. You're going to send a
three hundred pounds person with inertia after your quarterback. That's
probably two hundred pounds, so he could possibly get hurt.
The point being is you don't break the hood without
people being hurt. So that goes to say when Stoops
was asked about him and Barnhart negotiating and he said,
(36:28):
this is last time only I don't need everybody it
again like dang, like he's talking to little kids or something.
But what do you think there's been a negotiation. I
know Alvin was saying that you know that maybe something
has to be done, and we're going to discuss more
on the other side of the hour, but I just
wanted to get your comments. If you think there's a conversation,
you think a conversation is going to be had or
do you think there should be a conversation had?
Speaker 6 (36:51):
Well, again, I don't know how Jack will feel about this,
but I don't think there's a chance Mark Soups is
walking away without his money, because why would he. I mean,
you can talk about is Don said, you can talk
about integrity or whatever, but if I was olding for
from thirty six to forty million. But because of whatever reason,
if you don't want me here, you're going to have
to pay me. I'm not going to make it easier
(37:12):
on you. You gave me the contract. I think Kentucky
is going to have it. If they want to make
a change, which looks like they're going to need to do,
they're have to buite the bullet and find the money somewhere.
And I don't fault Mark Steps for not wanting to
give them give money back that he's that he's got
a contract signed that he's due to get. I don't
fault him for that. But I don't believe any of
(37:32):
that stuff about that he went and offered to take
a lesser buy out if Mitch wanted to fire. And Mitch,
as well all know, is extremely loyal to a fault.
He keeps people a long time. So I don't I
don't think any of that, and I don't know that
Mitch will have the conversations. I don't know that Mitch
wants to spend the money, but I think he better
wake up and starts seeing its. Like with the post
(37:55):
I sent you from Oscar from Oscar Combs who I
consider the voice of reason, kind of like I usually
do you. I mean, you see Oscar saying the things
that he's saying, and I know he's an old guy
like me, but that's when you better start paying attention
to stuff. But I just don't know that Mitch will.
Speaker 2 (38:10):
We will continue the conversation at ten oh five, so
make sure you return to these airways. We'll be back
after this. You're listening to Stockyards Bank Sunday one of
Sports Talk on news radio six point thirty WLAP.
