Speaker 1 (00:00):
K on Sports. It is Fox Sports Radio. You know,
it is an honor to have Sierra Jackson in the
studio with us today. And the fact is, when I
was living in Boise and Fresno State won the national
championship in two thousand and eight, and I was probably
the only one in the entire state of Idaho rocking

(00:22):
the green V on the back of my ride. It
was a sense of pride that I felt. And I
haven't felt that sense of pride until this weekend when
I was watching Hayward Field, Oregon, Tracktown, USA, and I
was like, that is Sierra Jackson from Fresno State about
to take over the top spot and you won the

(00:45):
national championship in the discus Sierra Jackson in studio, how
are you feeling?

Speaker 2 (00:50):
Uh, I'm very happy and like still surprised that I
won because I'm like, going into competition, I wasn't expecting
to win. My main goal was just to hit my
cues and just to have fun. Okay, I definitely did that.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
No, you definitely had fun. You definitely represented the valley.
We love you for that. Let's talk about you finally
realizing Wait a minute, not only am I here, but
I actually have a chance to win this. At what
point did you say I'm going for this.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
I would say after I threw the sixty five.

Speaker 1 (01:27):
Okay, like half of the sixty five, not before the
sixty five, but half of the sixty five, I knew
I had this.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
Yeah, So like I do the sixty five and I
was like, oh my gosh, Cuz like a big thing
for me. This like upcoming weeks, was like just getting
it out of the cage because I've been caging them
towards the right sector. So like that was something that
I was like really trying to do well on and
so like I reversed and I got it out, and

(01:54):
I was like, oh my god. And then it like
rode the right sector line right, and then I was like,
oh my god, turn in, turn and turn in. And
then it turned in and then like one thing that
I say a lot is like I know when the
throw is good because the crowd will start cheering before
it hits the ground. Yes, and everyone was cheering, so
I was like, oh, yeah, that's a good throw, man.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
That is insane. So when you realize that you had
the meat record, what went through your mind when it
showed on the board. The final amount, the final distance.
What were your thoughts.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
Well, I didn't know it was the meat record. I
honestly didn't know what the GAT record was. I did
see a post that morning talking about it may fall,
but like I wasn't expecting to get it right. And
then like I threw the sixty five and like it
came up and I was like, oh my god, I
just threw sixty five meters. Like I immediately thought like,
oh my god, now I don't have to worry about

(02:49):
like having to be top thirty two to like possibly
make it to worlds. Like I got the A standard now, yeah,
so like I'm good. Like I wasn't even like stressing
about NCA's at the moment. I was just really wanting
to get the A standards so that I have the
possibility to go to the world.

Speaker 1 (03:05):
Well, you definitely got the A standard and on top
of that, you are the national champion representing Fresno State
and you won an historic Hayward field. First of all,
what was it like going into Tracktown, USA and then
pulling off such a feat?

Speaker 2 (03:21):
So going in I always love going to Hayward just
because like the energy is always there, like the fans
always bring the energy in. Like I feel like a
celebrity when I go there, even though I'm just a
college athlete. Right. They make me feel so welcomed and everything,
Like people probably don't know my name, but like, well
now they.

Speaker 1 (03:39):
Are, yeah they know Siarrah Jackson now.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
But like going in there, they always make you feel
welcome no matter what. So I just love competing there.
It makes me feel good.

Speaker 1 (03:50):
Something special about that place. Yeah, you go there and
they understand track and field, They understand the field events,
they understand everything that's going on. So believe me, I
think that's one of the best places in the country
for collegiate well not only collegiate but for track and
field in general. I love everything that happens at Hayward Field.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
You know.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
I do like everything that happens at Veterans too, but
I mean Hayward Field. There's something real special about that place.
What was it like to be on that podium representing
Fresne State, Especially when you look around you and you
see the Georgias of the world, the USC's of the world.
You see these track powerhouses, and there you are go,
dogs man, Frisne State. Come on, talk about that fielding

(04:32):
being on top of that podium.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
Okay, Well, first I wanted to say that I'm very proud,
like I've never thought I would be so proud of
get an eighth place and shot foot So like that
already was a high for me because I was telling
coach the entire week I was like I just wanted trophy.
I just wanted trophy. And so like getting the eighth
place trophy, I was like, oh my god, like I'm
on top of the world.

Speaker 1 (04:51):
Cloud nine.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
Yeah. Right, And then like going in the discus, like again,
I wasn't expecting to win. I knew it was a possibility,
but if I don't expect it and like that doesn't happen,
I won't be disappointed. So like I was just going
in with like confidence and everything. And then through the
first one and I was like, oh my god, I
just do sixty five. And then like on my last

(05:14):
thro I want it. And then like being able to
stand on the podium was like officially like oh my god,
I really want nationals, Like I really did it, Like
I finally did it. It was my first time winning anything,
so I was like, oh my goodness.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
Fresno State, it means a lot to represent Fresno State.
You see my hat valley grit, it does mean something. Yeah,
talk about what it means to be a part of
a track and field program that they know. They're like,
you know what, we have the potential to get this
off the ground, do something extremely special. And here you

(05:55):
are a national champion. And I love the coaches at
Fresno State. Talk about that track and field program and
why you chose Fresno State.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
So, like, I know Fresno State is not like well
known like a big school like Georgia, but like, I
think getting good athletes on the team will also help.
I chose Fresno because coach was like the only one
that truly like wanted to make me better as a

(06:26):
person and not just athlete. So like it wasn't like, oh, well,
if you come on our team, you're our top thrower,
so like you would like make our team better, Like no,
he wanted to make me better as an athlete, not
make the team better, Like obviously he wants to make
the team better, but but like it was more so

(06:47):
about like how can I make Sierra better as an
athlete and as a person. So I was like, yeah,
this is definitely a coach I would want to be
coached by, Like, I'm going to be here for four years,
so why not go somewhere where I feel appreciated.

Speaker 1 (07:03):
At Fresnel State, that track and field program is a
very special program. I love what they're doing there. I
like the energy that they're putting into the program. Gary JP,
everyone that's there, those coaches are amazing. You took a
lot from the life lesson of your mother battling breast cancer.

(07:25):
Talk about that, well, I don't really know what to say.
I mean, your mom is a breast cancer survivor, and
I know that you watching her go through everything that
she went through helped you. You took from her strength,
you took from her experiences, and even as difficult as

(07:45):
practices may be, or even when you're at a competition,
there's no way that it could have been any more
challenging than anything that your mother went through. Yeah, no, no,
it's okay, believe me, I understand. I mean, this is
a special moment for you, it's a special moment for

(08:05):
your family, and your mom means so much to you,
and I know that it's a difficult thing to talk about.
It's a difficult thing to bring up, but it's such
an important part of your journey, an important part of
your life, and your family is so very proud of you,
and your teammates stood behind you and they love you

(08:26):
more than life. And to see your mom come through
and battle breast cancer and defeat that beast is beautiful.

Speaker 2 (08:38):
I think the thing that that I'm like most happy
and like proud of is that she's able to like
watch yeah, and like she was able to watch me
when and she's like she's my biggest supporter, Like by far,
she's always been there for me, Like even when it

(08:59):
was hard for her, she was always there for us.
And like going out there now and like being able
to make her happy and proud and everything, and like
having her smile on everything. It makes me very happy
because there was times where it was hard where she

(09:21):
didn't smile, and like I'd say, during those times, she
was at her lowest, so we had to be at
our highest for her.

Speaker 1 (09:32):
Yeah. Well, I'll tell you this, what your mom battled.
She's an extremely brave woman. What you did, you climbed
to the mountaintop. You took a lot of that energy
that she had, that energy that she fought with, and
you used it to get a record breaking throw. You
are the national champion in the NCUBLEA in discus. That's crazy.

(09:58):
I love the smile on your face right now. I
know we just went through the sad part of the internet,
and I'm sorry for that, okay, but I love the
smile on your face right now because you did something
maybe you didn't think that you could do. You found
an energy and you found something deep down inside that's special.

(10:18):
Thank you, that is special. Congratulations to you, Thank you,
Thank you Sierra Jackson for representing Fresno State. The way
you did. The smile in the studio is the same
smile that I saw on TV the other day and
I am so blessed to have had this moment with you.
And just to say, congratulations, gold dogs, Sierra Jackson. You

(10:44):
are a national champion.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
Thank you so much.

Speaker 1 (10:47):
You're twenty twenty five national champion from Fresno State in
the discus, Sierra Jackson right there on sports it is
