Speaker 1 (00:00):
Got some conversation, a conversation to have about what's going
on with the MAVs assistant coaches. They lost another one.
We got a news quickie coming up. Is there room
on this planet for adult arcades? We got fun stuff
coming your way here on Thursday, July third. Gonna be
a fun show. But right now, stop for this.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Now it's around the sports.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
Ktd tweints as all the sports.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
We'll get some maps stuff in a second. I thought
this was interesting. Former Ranger as recently as April and May,
Kevin Pilar goes on this MLB Network show called foul
Territory because you need to have some type of baseball
reference in the title of your show, and Kevin Pilar
discusses some weird things going on with the Rangers this year.
Speaker 4 (00:51):
I thought they would be a little bit tighter as
a group do When I got in the clubhouse in Texas,
there's a lot of talent in there, and there's just
a lot of in vigil stuff going on. A lot
of guys are doing their own thing. You might not
see people till the game.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
Game goes on until the.
Speaker 4 (01:09):
Yeah, guys are kind of just doing their own thing,
whether they have their own to me. The reason there,
I think a lot of guys just got off to
a bad start individually, and the pitching was so good
and we were still winning. We they were still winning games.
I guess it was we at the time. They were
still winning games. It just seemed like the winning didn't
seem it didn't a lot of guys weren't like enjoying
(01:32):
that we were winning games. You know, a lot of
people got caught up in their own failures. That just
happened for you know, pretty much the first month.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
He also went on to say that guys weren't like
hanging out and talking to each other when stretching and
taking batting practice. Was it which is when baseball players
get to know each other. What's your favorite band?
Speaker 1 (01:50):
And they weren't doing anything else like away from baseball. Yeah,
they weren't going bowling or going to shows or movies
or restaurants or whatever.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
They weren't spinning any time together. I love them.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
They're not fun like Corey Singer and Marcusimen are great.
They're not fun guys. This is not what they are.
And that's what makes them great is that they go
about their business a certain way and they're awesome.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
I don't want to ring because of.
Speaker 5 (02:15):
Them, Okay, but let me just throw this out there
and then, and this is why you do have to
have You know, a lot of times fans will go,
why did they sign that guy? Like there is a
lot of fans who are like, why did the Mavericks
sign Mark Keith Morris? You need to have certain guys
in your locker room that bring everyone together. Now, I
(02:36):
realize basketball is a smaller locker room, so I'm not
saying it's apples to apples, but who is the Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
Yeah, that's why they wrote the number of how many
games they had left to win on his ass, on
his ass.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
That's why you have to have guys like that.
Speaker 5 (02:49):
That's why not only was Napoli great, you know, hitting,
but also he brought guys together.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
Who's the other guy they signed, the big dude that
loved going to Waterburger He couldn't hit for the first
month and a half.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
H Burger.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
Oh Josh Peterson, Yeah, oh yeah, absolutely that guy and
then he broke his hand and yeah, we haven't seen him,
uh berger is Burger's a fun guy. But but the
thing on that too, is those those guys that you're
talking about in baseball? How do you acquire those guys?
At the trade deadline? You find out what your team
is and if you need to get a fun guy
who sucks, you can easily grab that on July thirty first.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Yeah, it's a good point.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
And the Rangers have been playing pretty good lately, so
I know they're kind of far back, but they're actually
they're not far back in the wild card and all
that stuff. Like, I think they're kind of gonna be fine.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
But I think that's a fair criticism though. No, yeah,
they're not fun. They're not fun.
Speaker 1 (03:38):
And that's a guy that's a veteran who's been around
the league for a long time, bounce around, been in
a lot of different clubhouses.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
I think it's who they are.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Yeah, right, they're in silos because these their best players
don't have big personalities, but they're great baseball players.
Speaker 3 (03:52):
This is why wash By the way, Wash is, you know,
out for the year with a medical thing.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
Do we know what the medical thing is? No, it's
been unannounced. Because he only early seventies, it's not like
he's crazy old.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
But like, this is why washings like took like the
Angels told them they couldn't have their cell phones in
the locker room and things like that, and it's different
than it was even in twenty ten and twenty eleven.
Right Like, watching the Elvis Andrews Hall of Fame induction
ceremony the other day brought a lot of good memories
of those times, and Michael Young and Beltra had really
good speeches about those times and how Elvis made them.
(04:26):
Like Beltray, who was always a little bit fun, He's like,
Elvis made me be really fun, you know. And I
was like, even like they did a videos in the
JumboTron just to guys who couldn't make it, and Julio
Borbone did a little video and I was like, yeah,
Julia Romon was not a very good player, but he
was fun and kind of fast. And we're doing Colin
Antler stuff. But it's a whole different team. And that's
(04:47):
why I think the twenty twenty three World Series win
will never feel anywhere close to as good as that
one would have with Josh and Michael and Beltray, because
it's different. It was just a whole different time. The
way we used technology was different. Back then. You couldn't
even see the regular season games in twenty twenty three.
You know, so, yeah, I'm a little different.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
I could be wrong on this skin. You know more
than me.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
But Kyrie seems like a guy that really tries to
tie in teammates chemistry wise.
Speaker 5 (05:13):
I don't I can't speak about anything before the Mavericks,
and I've heard things, but he mattered to the Mavericks
a great deal. But also keep in mind another guy
that mattered. He came in with Mark Keith Morris, and
I remember asking Nika. I was like, why can't markif
just be on the coaching staff. He goes you, it's
different the second you cross that line, it's different, right.
(05:35):
Jared Dudley was that guy for the Lakers when they
won a championship, But now that he's a coach, it's different.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Did you guys see what I tell you?
Speaker 5 (05:42):
What We'll wait and talk about on the other side,
because I do have something about God, Sham God. But
I do want to say one thing. Elvis was so
about bits that he got a Dan Marino tattoo on
his own. Now that's a guy that loves no His
dad just looks like Dan Marino. Oh, coming up next,
let's do talk about the MAVs Assistant Coaching carousel will
do that in just over three minutes.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
Don't miss it. Pretty interesting stuff there. Ninety seven point
one the Eagle.
Speaker 5 (06:06):
You feel in a lot of burger about Twisted Root
Burger Company. There are the sponsors of this here segment writer,
and man, they do it right. They've been doing it
right in Dallas Fort Worth for a long time. In fact,
one of the cool things about our friends over at
Twisted Routburger Company with locations and Carrollton, Copel, Deep Album,
East plain O, Bedford, Arlington, Mansfielder. They very local. If
(06:31):
you go in there and you mentioned Ben and Skin,
you're gonna get ten percent off. Now that's ten percent
off any other cool burger like D's Nuts that's a
specialized burger they have, or that bring your build your
own burger, rather that you go in there, you pick
the protein, all the toppings, you put it together yourself.
They got that going to and it is awesome. So
go see for yourself any of those locations I mentioned,
(06:52):
say Ben and Skin sent me and get ten percent
off with the Twisted Root Burger Company. All right, let's
get into the Maverick News. The one thing that we
can report is that they lost a very important coach
and gained a.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
Very important coach.
Speaker 5 (07:09):
We'll start with who they lost, God Sham God was
I went in his post today, jumped up on my
Instagram feed and in his Instagram bio it said Dallas
mAb's assistant coach, head of player Culture.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
That was in his Instagram bio.
Speaker 5 (07:30):
He's going and joining the Orlando Magic where our old
buddy Jamal Mosley is the head coach. And Mosley worked
with Sham for five years. Maybe I know it all
kind of runs together now knew him for longer. Everybody
in the game knows God Sham God. And if you
don't know his history, he's known as one of the
(07:50):
greatest ball handlers of all time and he actually there's
a move named after him called the Sham God. So
he was instrumental in working with guys like Harrison Barnes
who kind of got here and didn't have a lot
of handles man, he worked tirelessly with Sham. Also, if
you don't know, he was the same recruiting class as
Kobe Bryant, and Kobe when he was young had Sham
(08:14):
work with him on his handles. So imagine what you
know about Kobe Bryant. He's getting one of his peers
to work with him on his handles. That's what he's
known for, and he was a great guy around here.
He's a New York legend. And so that's a big
loss for the Mavericks as he goes to the Orlando Magic.
Speaker 2 (08:30):
Yeah, and I saw God sham.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
God's comment was something like, like everybody else thirty days ago,
I didn't see leaving the Mavericks as a possibility, and
that's kind of a damning thing to say on your
way out the door. There was another coach recently, was
it Sweeney. Sweeney's gone, he's joining San antonio staff. But
didn't he have a solar comment where he was like
I didn't anticipate leaving or something, or he wanted to stay.
Speaker 2 (08:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (08:55):
I didn't see his comment, Ben, but it was reported
by reputable people that Seann sween and he wanted to
stay but was not was not given this kind of
offer that. I don't know anything about the negotiations. I
just know it was reported that Santonio gave him a
much better offer than he is to get here.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
I just don't I don't know, I don't I don't
know enough to know, but right now I'm looking at Okay,
obviously the Luca trade there was all sorts of whole
thing was engulfed in flames. I'm so happy about getting
Cooper Flag, and I've been able to turn the page
personally on that. By the way, some guy killed us.
They sent U. We'll maybe get into it later in
the show. I forgot about this till now. But he
(09:33):
was like, you guys, are you know, you guys are shameless.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
I can't believe you've moved on from the Luca trade.
You guys are puppets and all this.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
I'm like, dude, what good does it do to anyways?
Speaker 2 (09:45):
I like people who know nothing about me in my
life telling me.
Speaker 1 (09:49):
It's like there still are signs of It's like there
still are signs of fire.
Speaker 2 (09:57):
Right Like, I've moved on.
Speaker 1 (09:59):
I'm so excit about Cooper Flags all but stuff like this,
I don't like it. I don't like these stories. If like,
really good people who are valued and valued elsewhere in
the league didn't want to leave and then they just
leave with question marks. But again, I don't know enough
of it to know what happened. But it's not doesn't
it's not comforting.
Speaker 5 (10:17):
Well, you know, it's not comforting when you don't fully
know the situation and you project onto it.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
I'm not talking about you, talk about me and you both.
Speaker 1 (10:24):
And I am doing that, and I'm admittedly doing that,
and I and everything is tainted the blind test of
the Luca trade, and so yes, I'm looking through that lens.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
There's a guy.
Speaker 5 (10:33):
The other thing that happened that is for sure happening
is Frank Vogels now replaced Sean Sweeney. If we want
to I love Sean Sweeney. If we want to hold
Frank Vogel's resume next to Sean Sweeney, he's holding Sewan
Sweeney's head underwater. He's won an NBA championship. There is
a guy that I've been interacting with on Twitter for
I don't know, five or six years, and I don't
know what his real name is. I know what his
(10:54):
Twitter name is. He said, yeah, Frank Vogel's a better
NBA coach than Jason Kidd and Myers on. Someone was
do you have a lot of experience understanding what NBA
coaches do? And his response was, yeah, I got a
pretty fair idea of it. And I'm like, no, you don't,
You've never I don't know. It's so easy on the outside.
I mean, i'd do it all the time with McCarthy,
(11:14):
but I've never worked on an NFL staff.
Speaker 2 (11:17):
I don't work for the Cowboys.
Speaker 5 (11:19):
There's all kinds of things I don't know from the
outside and what I watch on a Sunday.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
It's easy to say this stuff. Now.
Speaker 5 (11:25):
I'm not saying that Frank Vogel is a better coach
than Sean Sweeney. I've had about five interactions with Frank
Vogel and they're all fricking awesome.
Speaker 1 (11:33):
They're all awesome, And maybe that was their plan all along.
They're going to upgrade, and so we like him, we
wish him well, and I know he wants to stay, but.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
We're upgrading there. So maybe that's it.
Speaker 1 (11:43):
And I'm tainted by everything because I'm looking through these
Luca glasses and that's fair.
Speaker 5 (11:48):
And now I'm not saying any I'm not saying either
one of us or right or wrong. Here we all
rush out to judgment what happens is in two years
it will have either been right or wrong. I don't
know if the Mavericks are going to get Phil Handy
who has been reported as coming to Dallas to replace
basically the role that sham God had in some regards.
I have seen footage of Phil Handy saying Kyrie Irving
is the most talented NBA player of all time skill wise.
(12:11):
Now he's also being courted by the Knicks. Maybe he
ends up there. But what I'm saying is a lot
of times we don't know. I would say it's very
fair if you're judging this based on what happened with
the Mavericks medical staff to make a lot of negative assumptions.
You know that right now does not look good. Maybe
it will over time, but it's just easy to comment
(12:32):
on what coaches do or don't when you're not in
the room and none of us really know.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
All Right, There you have it. There's a little sports
coming up next. Is there room on this planet for
adult arcades? You don't want to miss this story. It's
next
