Speaker 1 (00:00):
On this episode of The Heat Check, it's Summer League, Baby.
I am here on the ground in Las Vegas to
give you all the tea that you can use to
help prepare you for the twenty five twenty six season, which,
believe it or not, kicks off with training camp in
about seventy five games, seventy five days. Excuse me, seventy
five games to see I'm tired. It's Vegas time. Seems
impossible that it's seventy five days away, but it is true.
(00:21):
No time to waste, Wyatt, So drop that motherfucking beat
that should be Rihanna. You're listening to the Hottest The
hottest hit be a podcast out here.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
I said what I said, Eat it up. It's the
heat Check heat chat checks.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
So I love some of the Summer League's my favorite
time of year. I love Vegas. I love everything about
the vibes of the gym. I love watching rookies play.
I love watching young players try to get their spots.
Maybe they got drafted late and they're trying to crack
the rotation. Maybe older guys are trying to figure out
a way to get back in the league. I like
all of it. It was definitely more poppin' when it
(01:06):
was a lot less poppin'. You know what I'm saying,
It's gotten to be kind of corporate. The michelob ultra
fucking section that makes it impossible for media to see
over the basket's just gone has just disappeared into the
michelobe section fucking sucks. The shoemaking station in the concourse,
(01:28):
don't love it.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
The build your own.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
Hoodie put patches on the hoodie station, don't love it.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
The amount of people that are coming and paying to.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
Be there, and how insane security has gotten.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Don't love it.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
When it was just agents, players, coaches, GMS, media, that
was the best smattering of fans.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
Is fine.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
You want the atmosphere of like even a small Jruligue
game like they have in LA.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
That's great. But it's just gotten to be too much.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
When courtsight tickets for Cooper like versus Brownie James, the
fifty fifth pick and the last year's draft are twenty
five hundred dollars, you know it.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
Is silly season. It's big business now.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
I was thinking about this, how much the Summer League
must must change or have an economic impact of Vegas itself.
We've got all thirty teams here, all the fans, all
the media, hundreds of different people, thirty teams. It's got
to be millions of dollars for eleven days, six hundred
(02:33):
dollars for some of these hotel rooms, really expensive meals, ubers,
car rentals, all of it.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
It's just huge. But let's talk about what's good about
Summer League.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
I've got the chance to see some of the most
anticipated rookie so far, from Cooper Flag to Ace Bailey
to VJ. Edgecombe, come on, malawatch, I've seen some lesser
known players as well.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
Let's look at the good. We gotta talk about Cooper Flag.
Speaker 1 (02:59):
Cooper Fly played in two Summer League games before the
match shut him down, and he had that big matchup
between Brownie James, and it was just meh. In terms
of the box score ten points, six assists, four rebounds.
The efficiency was horrible. He was five for twenty one.
He did have three steals. He can play good man
(03:20):
to man defense and when you were watching the game,
he certainly was everywhere.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
He's involved in all the plays.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
The shot making was tough and the shots that he
was taking were too contested. A lot of dribble, dribble, dribble, drive,
turn around, jumper, fade away over some guy that's in
his grill. So then I was wandering to see how
the second outing would do. He would do against San Antonio,
which san Antonio won. There'd been an awesome Summer League
(03:47):
team actually took the same amount of shots but made
twice as many ten for twenty one, had thirty one points,
and he.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Got the line thirteen times.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
Cooper flag even in the first game, it felt like
he's gonna get a very generous whishole, and so he's
going to have to adjust to the speed of the game.
He's going to come around screens and have a lot
of catch and shoot opportunities, which I think if the
Spurs coach correctly, that's what he's going to get. But
I think initiating the offense is going to be very
interesting for him. Getting his own shot off the dribble
(04:17):
from deep is going to be interesting for him. I
want to see how he does there. I think he's
going to look to pass. I just very fascinated about Cooper,
but he's the real deal. Ultimately, it's very obvious that
he's in this setting the best player on the floor.
He's huge, he looks big, he's long, he's rangy. He's
(04:38):
again involved in everything, whether that's contesting, coming off of
off the ball, defending off the ball. You know, somebody
throws an outlet pass, he gets right in the middle
of that and breaks it up, rebounding.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
He's just this Swiss army knife.
Speaker 1 (04:53):
Of a player who's going to be really, really good.
Only had three turnovers in two games as well, so
he's making good decisions. He was interviewed after game one
and he said, it's just a different game, different paced,
different field, different spacing, just a lot of adjustments, but
will be all right. So I like Cooper Flagg's ability
to improve that fast. He's shut down again for the
(05:15):
rest of the summer league, but he definitely is gonna
get the Caitlin Clark treatment to the start of the
NBA season, and I don't expect his numbers to be huge,
but I saw enough to be convinced that he's gonna
be very good. And depending on how D'Angelo Russell looks,
he could get a lot of easy open looks and
when it comes to just catch and shoot threes, Cooper
(05:36):
Flag was really good. It's gonna take time for us
to determine whether he's gonna be a superstar, but he's
gonna be really freaking good. All right, let's talk about
Walter Clayton. We saw A Bailey's slow start. He's now injured.
He's probably not playing in Vegas. I think he's gonna
get a lot of run as a rookie. Utah is
gonna play their young guys. They're probably tanking without tanking.
(05:59):
But I I want to talk about Walter Clayton, the
young guy on the Jazz who I am so excited about.
I was pumped about him when he was at Florida.
I loved his game in college. I wondered how with
his height he was going to transition to the league
cause he's very small, and after one game, I think
he's going to have a chance to stick. He had
twenty one, six and three in his summer leg summer
(06:20):
league debut, including forty percent from three on ten attempts.
And he looks good, looks very in control. I was
watching his turnovers and he only had two. I liked
that he can create his own shot. We saw him
generate his own shot in college, but he can create
space and that sort of tenacity and ability to get
open looks is going to matter a lot at the
(06:41):
next level. With Colin Sexton out in Utah, I think
he's going to get a lot of playing time.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
Let's move forward and talk about Dylan Harper. He's very smooth.
Speaker 1 (06:48):
He missed the Spurs first game, but he played against
Cooper Flag and he belongs in the league.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
It's very obvious.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
He had sixteen and six, seventeen and six or sixteen
and six, Yeah, in six and in sixteen points with
a pair of deals, one of the best transition blocks
you're going to see in summer League. His athleticism was
on display. I think he needs to work on his shot.
The thing that he does that I feel like is
the biggest source of improvement is he gets into the lane,
(07:15):
gets into the paint, and then kind of doesn't know
what to do with it. He's used to being bigger
and stronger than everybody that he's played with, and now
he's not. And now he's not faster, and he doesn't
have a lot of moves around the rim. But he's
going to get to learn from Dearon Fox, who has
an awesome bag around the rim.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
So I think he.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
Showed enough for Spurs fans to be very excited, although
I am concerned about how many minutes he's going to get.
Yong Hanson probably the star of Summer League, the most
controversial pick in the first round everybody, well, probably the
whole most controversial pick in the all of the draft.
Blazers took him at sixteen out of China, and he
has been the buzz, averaging ten to five and four
(07:53):
two blocks per game. But a lot of people are
excited about his court vision. He is just seeing the game.
He is anticipating where the defense and his teammates will be.
He is manipulating the defense. He's calling for the ball
and just running the offense. There are not a lot
of players like that in the league. He threw out
(08:13):
four dimes in these last two games, at least that
if you saw the end product and not where it
came from, you would think that was Yoki passing the ball.
I like that he's on the perimeter. I like that
he can take the ball to the rack. I like
that he's physical. I like that he's getting into his
defender's faces, pointing at him, dawing back and forth. His
frame is big, enough that I think he can put
some more muscle on. He's one of the few players
(08:36):
that I watch that when he doesn't have the ball,
because his creativity stems really from being in the right
place at the right time, and he's very good at that.
I think once he gets all these athletic players around him,
it's going to be so fun. And you see how
other players become more unselfish and make the extra pass
simply because he's there and he's doing those things as well.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
There's gonna be a lot of alleyups in abundance.
Speaker 1 (08:59):
I'm very interested to see how him and Donovan Klington
look like on the same team on the floor at
the same time. He has a lot of the same
traits as Jokic. He's very slow, his feet are not fast.
I'm very concerned about him as a defender, but he's.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
Got a lot to like and boy is he like
a bull.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
Very charismatic. Unsure why anyone is a fan of his.
English is getting better, which I don't think matters at all,
but he's just adorable. Jan Hanson is my favorite player
to watch at Summer League, and I can't wait for
their next game. Alex sarr One year ago at this
time was getting clowned. We were wondering, who is this
(09:37):
guy who went over fifteen from the field and why
is he on the team? Now fast forwarded this year
in the Washington Wizards second year Center had a game
for the ages, had sixteen and twelve had eight blocks,
and you get a lot of crash test dummies coming
into the lane. But it's still pretty impressive, and the
Wizards in general are impressive. Speaking of the Wizards, Tray
(09:58):
Johnson doesn't get mentioned nearly as much as the other
rest of the top five picks, but he is handling business.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
The sixth overall pick.
Speaker 1 (10:08):
In his debut put up twenty one on seven to eleven,
played a very efficient game. The thing that people are
concerned about is his decision making and the fact that
he doesn't get a lot of easy buckets. He's working
on his defense, but he has a body that I'm
not worried super a lot about, just in terms of
his size. The height is there, the musculature is there.
(10:31):
I want to see how he fits into the ecosystem
of Washington. He said after his latest game that none
of the coaches care if I can score.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
They just care if I play defense. That's all they've
talked to me about. That's all they care about. And
I just got to.
Speaker 1 (10:46):
Come out and make sure that I'm putting my hat
on the defensive end, and that's the part I'm worried about.
That's a lot of confidence. I think he's going to
be able to score six to five. He's got the
size to be a lockdown defender. He's got the size
to be a real deal combo guard. I think if
he can do that, he can make some noise in
the league. Anyway, there are some those are some of
the bigger names that I've watched. Here are some of
(11:07):
the tea on the lesser known players in Summer League who.
Speaker 2 (11:10):
Have made noise.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
Not saying that these guys are gonna make the league
or even be All Stars, but it's nice to acknowledge
when players ball out. Uh Nake one Tomlin needs to
be talked about.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
Who is he who?
Speaker 1 (11:23):
That's why I'm telling you about him. He's a second
year four for the Calves. His bunch of ten day
god status in the G League. He's had two excellent
Summer League games. He had thirty in his first Summer
League game, follow that up with twenty two in the
next game. He's six' ten as a seven to two.
Speaker 2 (11:38):
Wingspan he can shoot. THREES i, mean The Indiana pacers
should make a.
Speaker 1 (11:43):
Call whether that means he's gonna make The cavs, ROSTER
i don't. Know but he's showing at for sure like.
That he's doing everything he's supposed to do as Summer.
League i'm Loving Ryan nemhard right. Now Ryan nemhard Is
Andrew nemhard's a little, brother but probably five to eleven
six feet. Maximum he had a solid first game out
Playing Cooper flag got to his.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
Spot he had.
Speaker 1 (12:05):
Twenty two points and twelve, rebounds three for five from.
Deep he looked really. Good second game was a little,
rougher but he is a bulldog and he's a guy
who's gonna have. Tenacity we know he has toughness and
he has. Grit he's got both off the. BENCH i
think a team that doesn't really have a floor general
and D'Angelo russell's really not, HIM i think he will stick.
(12:27):
AROUND i think he could actually be a rotation piece
For Dallas Reed. Shepherd we talked about him a lot last.
Year he's playing really well. Again he was had an
up and down rookie, year a bunch of. DMPs the
roster obviously was. Staged he had twenty eight in his
Summer Summer league debut this, year shot forty percent from
(12:47):
deep on fifteen, attempts had eight rebounds for us as
force steals and three blocks.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
Ridiculous so if you can.
Speaker 1 (12:53):
Play, defense he may will find a way to use,
you and force steals in three blocks is a way
to do. It he's a lot, smaller and given the
fact that he's improved his, DEFENSE i think he's gonna
get a lot more run In houston for. Sure Devin
carter was really. Good Devin carter of The Sacramento kings had.
Thirty Meet clifford also was really. Good The kings have
been one of the more Surprising Summer league, teams And
(13:15):
i'm very curious to see How Devin carter's going to
progress in this Next king's, outing because this is a
team who really Needs devin and he wasn't good last.
Year he had, injuries and now he looks a lot
more comfortable getting to his. Spots the shot looks, better
so that's. Fascinating can't wait to see how he works
out as the season Starts Brooks.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
Barnheiser, okay so he took him forty fourth.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
Overall he's six six to thirty and he's kind of
Like David Jones, garcia Who i'll talk to you about
in just a. Second but he's a kid who can.
Score he just put up.
Speaker 2 (13:54):
Seventeen to five on eight for ten from the. Floor
he's tough as.
Speaker 1 (13:57):
Nails he Made All big ten defense, team had six
deals in his, debut and he's a good locker room.
Guy So i'm fascinated to see what his role will
be In. Okay see probably four years from now when
we forget about him And, okay so he can't pay,
everyone he'll come, back come out and look amazing like
every okayse Th underplay player. Does Judah mints is a
(14:18):
six or four guard out Of. Syracuse he went. Undrafted
he signed with The SIXERS G league. Team he's very
athletic point. Guard didn't get a lot of love in
the pre draft. Process he put up twenty four and
six twenty one to four and six in THE G
league last, year but in his summer league debut he
has proved he can eat against this level of. Opponents
(14:38):
he had twenty six nine for fifteen from the. Field
he won the game with an am one the final eight.
Seconds he's like A Terry rosier style kind of a,
player can't seem to get more than just like a passing.
Look so even with the injuries that The sixers had last,
year he didn't get a call. Up but maybe this
Year's maybe this year's different For Juda. MINTS i really
Liked Pella larson watched him a couple times now for whatever,
(15:02):
reason the heat have just been on When i've gone
to the, arena and he's very, smooth extremely, smooth and
he had fifteen five and four and twenty two minutes
in the game that they just. HAVE i think he's
going to make the roster for.
Speaker 2 (15:18):
Sure And.
Speaker 1 (15:21):
Miami took. Him miami took him forty fourth in the
twenty twenty four. Drafts he's the same As Reed. Shepherd
he spent a lot of time off the. Bench he
got a lot of, DMPs but he's pretty good AND
i think he's gonna get a little bit more run
now that he's had A euro, seasoning especially Considering miami
needs help with. Scoring we got to talk about The
Charlotte hornets just in general that have just turned into
(15:43):
the most dukeasque, team the Most yukon s. Team the
new ownership of The Charlotte, hornets that's kind of their.
Vibe so they've picked Up liam, McNeely they picked Up Ryan,
kulchblinner and they Love Konk. Nipple So liam McNeely has been.
Awesome he put up twenty two and twelve for a
double double for The, hornets shooting sixty percent from, three
and that's much better than he played At yukon. COMPLETELY
(16:04):
i am liking this spot for him And. Charlotte he's
going to play Along Brandon. MILLER i think he could
be in for a good. Season so those are some
of the players THAT i really like that are underrated
and not talked about in some of the more known
names as.
Speaker 2 (16:17):
Well that's all this for this. Episode we'll have a
similarlygue wrap up next.
Speaker 1 (16:20):
Week also note we will be ramping down the podcast
so once a week until a training camp unless there's
