(00:00):
Rex of the Morning on CEE oneon one. I have the pleasure this
morning for International Woman's Day to talkto Ashley McKenzie and you own Third Coast
Spray Tans and more. You've beendoing this for how long? When did
you decide that you were going tostart your own business. I started this
(00:20):
company around two thousand and eight, when I was pregnant with my youngest son,
Stylus. Yeah, and so I'vebeen in business fourteen years now.
It's crazy because you know, I'veknown you for a long time and I've
seen the progression of your popularity ofyour business in multiple locations. Were there
(00:43):
doubters when you first started? Werethere people that were close to you that
went, oh, yeah, thisisn't going to work. Oh? Of
course. Most definitely I lost someof my closest friends. I had people
tell me, oh, you inthat little business, or you think to
highly of your business, and I'mlike, this is what pays my bills,
y'all. So it's always hard tohave friendship and business. You know,
(01:07):
I always say, either make moneyor have a lot of friends.
It's really hard to do both.I hear that a lot from people that
you know, male and female alikewhen you're going for it. It's weird
how the people that you thought wereyour closest friends can instead of them being
your biggest supporters, they can besort of the biggest doubters. Do you
(01:30):
think maybe there's some jealousy involved there, like, oh, wait a second,
you know, I can't have herbeing her own boss because who am
I going to complain to? Yeah, it's and I think it interrupts their
own sensibilities to you know, theirhopes and dreams. It reminds them that
they didn't follow what they wanted todo. Sometimes, I believe, I
(01:53):
hope I'm staying that in the rightnow. I think I think you're right,
And I think it's that way inany in any kind of business.
It doesn't matter if it's a standup comedy or if it's somebody you know,
pursuing a music career. The peoplethat aren't willing to step off that
curb and have a little bit morefear than you, they're the first ones
(02:15):
to go, oh, yeah, this can't be done, because then it
would highlight the fact that no,it can't be done. If it's you,
you you can't do it, butI can. I'm gonna go for
it. Yes, it definitely doesbring out you know, they're insecurities in
a way, or they're the lackof the risk that they wish they could
(02:37):
take. Yeah, and I don'tlet any of that defeat me or get
knee down to fuel my fire, honestly, and I think that's what's gotten
me here four Now. You've alsoinspired a lot of people that I see
close to you. You you seepeople that maybe you gave them the guts
(02:57):
to go for it. Also theother side of that coin, So yeah,
actually I have and I've had employeesthat have worked for me that you
know, maybe didn't know what careerpath they want to take, and they
have been inspired to, you know, go do facials or hair or nails,
you know. And it's not thenecessarily the beauty industry of it.
(03:17):
It's because we make women feel sogood about themselves. That's what's addicting about
it. Like, that's what's inspiring. It's not the business or the money
making side. It's that at theend of the day, like we make
people feel so good about themselves, and that is what becomes addicting. That's
something that I think with women inbusiness that I've that I've talked to.
(03:40):
They reap the rewards of actually doingfor others. And if you do for
others, be it in your businessor in your personal life, these things
sort of naturally come to you. It's like a karmic swing takes place.
And you know, when I haven'thad any money and I've given money to
(04:02):
people or helped someone, some weirddoor opens in the universe and then suddenly
I'm fine too. Yeah, alwaysgive away what you want. You know,
we want a lot of Tanners tocome in, so you know,
if we're arev you know we haveUV beds also not just greight handing.
(04:23):
Yeah, so for we every firsttime client they get their first tv tand
absolutely free. Why because the universejust has a weird way of also rewarding
you with that. Yeah. Soyou do that for somebody and then you
end up with a customer who's hada great experience. So beginning your business
was a little bit tough because youknow, of course there's competition in the
(04:46):
marketplace and being a woman. Didyou find anything harder about being a woman
starting this and not having you know, the backing of you know, three
silent partsners who were men that kindof thing. So I started this company
absolutely by myself. See that's whatI think is so great. That's that's
(05:10):
I knew that. And I waslike, Okay, I gotta how can
I craft this question? Because insteadof having a guy that's like okay,
forking out the cash in you knowthe background, you just went Okay,
I'm going to do this and itstarts today. It came so naturally to
me. I was born into afamily of entrepreneurs. A lot of my
family's entrepreneurs. I think you kindof know that, and I think it
(05:31):
kind of just runs through my veins. Being an entrepreneur and then being a
woman on top of that, it'sjust even more empowering to me. Like
I love being a woman business owner. It feels great. And then I
love when people doubt me or theythink, oh, you know, somebody
else is feeling in this business whenI'm like no, Like from the beginning,
I've I learned how to build myown website, I learned how to
(05:54):
like get top brank Google. I'velearned everything on my own. And and
that's why I'm here. I didn't, you know, I didn't have everybody
doing everything for me. I mean, now I have a great team and
they run and operate, but that'sjust leadership building other leaders at that point.
Well, I think your story isinspirational and I think you have a
(06:15):
lot of really great things to sayto motivate other women who might be on
the fence and doubting if they cango for it. And so it's great
that you've won so many awards andthat you've become so popular over the last
fourteen years. And congratulations on beinganother great Corpus Christie business, Third Coast
(06:39):

with you and it's always a lotof fun.
