Rex in the morning on C oneoh one, I have Principal Alverado from
Tolso Midway and Jackson Haley on theline. There's something brewing in Corpus Christi
and it involves blood donation. Canyou tell me how you guys came together
and exactly what is going on?Well, Actually, I lived in Costa
Rica back in twenty seventeen and twentyeighteen, and immersing myself in the Latin

(00:22):
American culture made such a profound impacton me and literally changed my life.
Even though I was living among someof the most amazing people on the planet,
I still felt a sense of disparityof what I had, you know,
when I grew up here in theUnited States and compared to some of
the conditions that children faced and everyday in their culture, I just felt
an overwhelming need to make a differenceand to help any child in need that
I could. So starting a nonprofitfor me, he seemed to be the

(00:45):
only path I could envision from mylife after living in Costa Rica. You
know, through the Jackson Haley Foundation, we're not just addressing challenges locally,
We're building a community of change makersthat I hope will one Day allowed the
Jackson Haley Foundation to cross border andbring our mission back to Latin America and
be able to make a real differencein the children not only in Costa Rica,
but also wrong the world. Youknow, we have a fantastic initiative

(01:08):
here that we are launching with theJackson Haley Foundation, and I reached out
to the principal at Telosi made Awayand already I got to know what is
the initiative, what is the opportunityare what exactly are you guys doing.
We're launching the Rivalry for Life bloodDrive initiative, which pairs two rival schools
in this particular situation, It's Telosimade Away in kl alum iios d into

(01:30):
this friendly rivalry where we compete inthis blood drive donation to help save lives.
Ah See, you know, becausea lot of people understand just one
pint of blood can save up tofour people. And I've done quite a
bit of work with the blood bankhere in South Texas, So anything that
can encourage people to give of themselvesto help other people is always wonderful.

(01:52):
Principal Alvarado, what was it aboutthis that made you say, ah,
we can jump on this we cantake on another school and get more blood
donated than the other school. Well, I think we're always looking for ways
to have our students help out ourcommunity, and this has just made sense.
It also incentivizes it. You know, we're all for taking on you
know, cant on and anything. So you know, if if this is

(02:14):
the means of which we're going todo about it, this just saves lives
in the process. It was animmediate yes from us. We know that
our kids will will show up andour community will show up. It's a
matter of pride and we believe wewill take it all. When when is
everything taking place or what is thespan of time that that that the donations
will actually take place? Give mesome of the details. Sure. Well,

(02:34):
actually, this has actually evolved intowhat we're now calling Rivalry Week,
So it's it's turned into a weeklong set of events that will also include
the blood drive itself. There willbe a drive at the Catalan High School
on one day, and then we'llhave one of the drives on the telosman
Away High School. But in additionto that, we also have multiple other

(02:58):
community events that that you're open to. The all coastal bind not just tell
us our calendar. This is acommunity wide event. So, as he
was saying, we initially started offwith the blood drive, but we wanted
to think bigger and we wanted ourkids to have the opportunity to help their
community in more than one way.So on Tuesday of the week of April
fifteenth, for hosting a walk forkids that will hopefully raise some money for

(03:21):
children in our area we're suffering fromvarious elements and in their families. Nice
We'll be taking a donations for ourstudents who will walk around our track,
have open games and things for otherkids. We'll have food trucks there.
We're also having a baseball and softballgame on that night as well. Wednesday
is That is cal Allen's day toparticipate in their blood drive in ours is

(03:45):
Thursday. That Thursday night, we'realso hosting a literacy night for our kids.
It's called Reading under the Lights. We're in writing kids from all across
the area. We'll have several ofour students some other community members there to
read the kids and hand out booksto promote literacy as a good will effort
on our parts and make sure thatour community has services and their kids get
what they need to be successful lateron. That's wonderful. So this is

(04:05):
taking place on April fifteenth, sixteenseventeen, eighteen two. We'll be able
to donate all week long. Ohlout that. So you can go to
any blood donation place and just sayyou're there for Rivalry for Life and then
you'd like to donate on Behalpy toeither high school and at the end we'll
count up how many blood donations thereare and that particular winner will get a
nice trophy that we can display onour display place. So the Rivalry for

(04:27):
Life and it takes place the weekof the fifteenth between Teloso Midway and cal
Allen. So when you actually gogive your blood donation, you specify which
school that you're pulling for and we'llfind out who who wins everything. Is
there a website or a Facebook pagewe can go to to read all about
this Jacksonhley dot org forward slash Rivalryand that's j A X s O n

(04:50):
h A y l E y dotorg Ford slash Rivalry. The Jackson Haley
Foundation will also be a warning aneducational grant to a student the winning school.
Anybody within the community can donate towardsone of these schools, and whoever
the winning school has the most donatedunits, we will select a student from
that school to win the education rate. Sounds like it's going to be a

(05:10):
very exciting week for you guys, but I just wanted to take a little
time right here and tell people inour community exactly what was happening between Toloso
Midway and cal Al And Principal Alvarado, thank you so much for joining me
and Jackson Haley the Jackson Haley Foundation. Thanks for hanging out with me this
