it a little bit right around the air.
Speaker 5 (01:42):
They like it. It likes that.
Speaker 4 (01:44):
It really is always liked that. It's always responded well
to that.
Speaker 5 (01:47):
Good morning. Welcome into the radio show.
Speaker 4 (01:49):
It is Chuck and Buck in the Morning's here on
a Tuesday Chuck Powell, former Mariner, Bucky Jacobson, and Ashley
Ryan with you for the next four hours.
Speaker 5 (01:57):
We do have a really thorough show today.
Speaker 4 (02:01):
But certainly what's on the tops of everybody's minds, I
would think here in Seattle is that our baseball team
is two wins away from its first ever World Series appearance.
Speaker 5 (02:13):
How does that feel? How does that hit you? At
six oh one, six two on a Tuesday morning. Hits
me right in the sweet spot.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
Yeah, I could notice that you kind of flinched in
your sweet spot, right, Yeah, Well I'm feeling it.
Speaker 5 (02:28):
It felt good.
Speaker 7 (02:29):
Well, it was close to hit it in somewhere that
wouldn't have felt good, right, I Mean, that's kind of
what the in between the sweet spot and the sweet spot,
the exact opposite of a sweet spot. Yeah, I mean
I think right now, I would imagine this is as
close we are tied now with as close to the
World Series as we've ever been, right, I mean, so
(02:51):
one more win We've we've had two wins at this
level before, never more than that. And sitting here at
two and zero is feeling really really good.
Speaker 11 (03:00):
Yesterday you were talking about those Loonies and tunis so
is a two nothing lead. That's the Tunyo And now
it makes sense to me.
Speaker 8 (03:09):
Yeah, now I get it.
Speaker 5 (03:10):
Okay, that's a story about it. If you want to
hear it, Yeah, he does. I heard it last right,
I don't want to I can't share. It's a wonderful story.
It is a wonderful story.
Speaker 8 (03:20):
I think we should keep that in your sweet spot.
Speaker 5 (03:22):
Maybe make children do have something to do with sweet spot.
I figured a little pop up look.
Speaker 7 (03:27):
Maybe yeah, yeah, yeah, it would be a good one.
Scratching sniff has to do with uh, polaroids and whatnot.
Speaker 8 (03:33):
Yeah, yeah, we'll keep that there.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
Uh so the Mariners do get it done. Yesterday, ten
to three was the final score. I'd like to say
a lot of it had to do with Logan Gilbert
kind of stepping up, but he did look tired. It
did look like it was a little bit too much
for him what was asked of him. And of course
Logan's going to take the ball, but he wasn't sharp.
He only went three innings. Fortunately for him. The offense
(03:58):
did such arrific job. I mean, it certainly showed up
to its largest degree so far in these playoffs and
kind of allowed for a bit of a coasting to
take place later on in the contest, even using a
few guys here that haven't been used a lot in
the postseason for four innings of work last night. We'll
(04:19):
get to the bullpen in a moment, but I think
the highlight is the offense, and the highlight of the
highlight is Jorge Polonko. There is a statistic called game
winning RBI, and it used to be calculated.
Speaker 5 (04:32):
It used to be a thing that they would put
up like you would get.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
Your box score in your newspaper, and it would be
in the agat section. It would show how many game
winning RBIs a guy has had during the course of
a season. They don't do that anymore. They stopped doing that. Gosh,
I don't know, like twenty five years ago. It doesn't mean.
Speaker 5 (04:50):
That it's still not tracked to some degree.
Speaker 4 (04:52):
You'll still see some stat nerds like Sarah Langs and
others pointed out during the course of a game.
Speaker 5 (04:57):
But it used to be charted as like a thing.
They don't really do it anymore.
Speaker 4 (05:03):
And yet I mean it seems like a pretty functional
quality thing to have on your side. And we have
a guy in or a Polonco. I mean it used
to be like, I gotta do this for memory, but
like game winning RBI in a year would be like
the leader in the.
Speaker 5 (05:19):
League would be like thirteen fourteen.
Speaker 4 (05:22):
Plonko's had three games in a row where he's provided
the game winning RBI, not just your regular old run
of the mill, back of the country store game winning
RBI postseason baseball, or a Polonco has knocked in the
game winning run in three consecutive games.
Speaker 5 (05:44):
You want to talk about clutch, this guy's the clutch oven.
Clutch oven. He will pull. He could pull the covers
over your head. Well, you're talking about the ones for cooking.
He's talking about the covers.
Speaker 11 (05:54):
I'm talking about either one, if that's what you want
to take it.
Speaker 4 (05:56):
He's cooking or he's pulling the covers over your head
and he is fumigating you with some army.
Speaker 5 (06:02):
That's what he's doing.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
He did that.
Speaker 7 (06:05):
Entire country of Canada, and that's after he did it
to Detroit.
Speaker 5 (06:09):
Apparently he doesn't like things that are way up north.
Speaker 8 (06:12):
Which is weird because we're pretty far up north.
Speaker 4 (06:14):
Yeah, up on your air, Canada.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (06:18):
They do not like him right now, understandably. So I,
on the other hand, love him.
Speaker 5 (06:24):
Like kind of really, but I I love him.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
I love his.
Speaker 7 (06:28):
Bug eyes and you know, his even though he went
back to the traditional EyeBlack versus the two tone digue.
Speaker 5 (06:35):
Yeah, is that what.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
That was going?
Speaker 9 (06:37):
Yeah?
Speaker 8 (06:37):
It was like lighter at the bottom and when yeah,
dark at the top.
Speaker 7 (06:40):
Yeah, that's the thing. I didn't know what that means.
But I liked all of his EyeBlack. But whatever he
decides to do, it's beautiful on you. You look great
in that eye. Black Blanco, keep it up, because yeah,
I mean it's I don't know why they.
Speaker 5 (06:53):
Would stop keeping a stat like that.
Speaker 7 (06:54):
That doesn't make a whole lot of sense other than
well it's it doesn't really matter because not everybody it's
the same opportunities. Okay, I guess, but that's why you
put him in the fourth spot in the order, right,
He's a that four five six, three, four five, six
are kind of typically your RBI guys because you typically
have good one two three, and you're figuring these are
(07:16):
guys that I need.
Speaker 5 (07:17):
To help produce runs.
Speaker 7 (07:18):
And Jorge Polanco's had, like you said, three games in
a row now where it's like, hey, we could really
use this. Yeah, yeah, you know, we could really use
an RBI right now. And he's like, Okay, I got you.
Uh and so yeah, I mean it's excuse me, he's
kind of a godsend. I mean, I said it to
you yesterday when we were watching the game together. Imagine
(07:39):
if they hadn't signed him and he had went to
the Astros. Yeah, I mean, if he had had the
season that he and the rebound season that he had
for us this year, if he had had that for
the Astros, I don't know if we win the division,
just that one sliding door, take him off of our team,
put him on their team. He goes and they probably
win the division. That there's really a chance they're the
ones sitting here up to zero in the Yeah.
Speaker 4 (08:00):
Well, yeah, I mean he's made a remarkable difference and
when they signed him, I mean before they signed him.
I mean, you can ask anders Hurst on our stove
and I think you two recollect. I mean, I was
really after Jorgete Polonko for years before we got him.
Justin Hollander apparently felt the exact same way. He had
been after him for a couple of years. It was
Justin Hollander that pulled off the trade for Jorgete Polonko.
(08:23):
Sometimes it's Jerry, sometimes it's Justin. Sometimes it's a collaborative effort.
Jerry always has to give the rubbers stamp, But Justin's
the one that worked on this deal and pulled it off.
And Hollander said, not long ago, man, I can't even
imagine a world where we didn't get this done in
the offseason. It was very close to not getting done.
I mean, he had a bad year his first year
with the Mariners. He had a bad year, and it
(08:44):
mystified me and certainly mystified Hollander and the Mariners because
they thought he was going to be a real difference
maker for them a year ago, in a year that
they missed the playoffs by one single stinking game. Imagine
if Jorgete Polonko was this year's version. If we had
had him a year ago, we'd be talking about back
to back playoff appearances. But he just didn't play well
(09:05):
last year. And whether that was coming off of an
injury or still suffering through an injury, I don't know
what kept him from being a productive player a year ago.
But obviously you weren't going to bring him back on
the deal that you had considering how poorly he had played,
and so they let him walk. I mean, he was
(09:25):
out in free agent. He could have gone anywhere, and
he was out there for a long long time, and
then came close to Bucky's point of signing with Houston
it sounded like anyway, and then the Mariners got back
in on it, and he started the season as a
third baseman, and then he was a third baseman who
couldn't field and wasn't allowed to hit from the right
(09:47):
side of the plate because of an injury, and now
he is just a monster. Here we are in the
middle of October, three straight game winning RBI for a
guy that's settled back in and base can hit from
either the left side or the right side of the plate.
Speaker 5 (10:03):
And of all the.
Speaker 4 (10:04):
People, including maybe dumber himself that you wanted the plate
with the game on the line. Man, Jorge Polonko's gotta
be the first or second guy that comes to mind.
Speaker 11 (10:13):
Oh, absolutely, I picture like, especially after these last three games,
Jerry up in his office, like in Billy Madison, man,
am I glad?
Speaker 8 (10:20):
I called that guy, like, that's.
Speaker 11 (10:22):
What my picture, And I just like, boy, did we
make the right decision to bring him back?
Speaker 8 (10:27):
Not just Jerry obviously, justin too.
Speaker 11 (10:29):
But it's it's pretty incredible that, especially with this team,
because I do feel like we've had so many of
our stars We've talked about like when Julio used to
come to the plate, it was like, oh, I wish
you weren't in this clutch position, right and right now
there's a good chunk of guys that I'm like, yeah,
I'm good, I have utter confidence.
Speaker 8 (10:49):
But when he steps to the plate, it's it's a
different story.
Speaker 4 (10:52):
Well, a lot of that has to do Bucky's brought
this point up a lot.
Speaker 5 (10:55):
I mean, you do borrow off.
Speaker 4 (10:58):
The confidence they say hitting as cans, but it's also
you borrow off of the confidence of having a lineup
that you know. It's just we talk about this word deep.
You have a deep lineup, and if people have heard
that don't really know what that means. That just means
that you don't run out of hitters that you trust
after your cleanup guy.
Speaker 5 (11:19):
Yep, you know, and.
Speaker 4 (11:20):
We've got I don't know if I'm I'm right now,
like Roeblaze comes up or even JP comes up, I
don't know if I'm brimming with confidence. But even with them,
that's not a bad eight nine hit to have. And
so this deep lineup, it just kind of relaxes everybody
a little bit, even to the point where, yeah, we
had some trepidation when Julio came to the plate there
(11:42):
for a while. I don't feel that way anymore. He
had just as big a hit as Orne had yesterday.
And so that's the deep lineup, borrowing off of each other.
Bucky said it a thousand times, knowing that, Hey, if
I don't get it done, I trust the guy that
comes up next to get it done. And do you
know how much that relaxes me to get it done.
(12:02):
And that's the way that this team can operate now,
which has not been the case the last few years.
Speaker 5 (12:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (12:08):
Well, I mean it's like, you know, there's a million
analogies you could use.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
To me, it.
Speaker 7 (12:12):
Honestly felt like like running water, right, whether it's just
the dripping or you got the sync turned on full
blast when you're hitting. And I mean really, it can start,
It can start on any given moment, and it can
shut off at any given moment, just as far as
how you're feeling as an individual and how you're feeling
as a team. First guy goes up there, battles, has
a good ab Whether it turns out great or not,
(12:35):
it gives confidence to the next guy versus your leadoff
batter of a game goes up there and just takes
one down the middle, swings at one in the dirt,
gets a fastball blown by him. You're walking up there, going, well, okay,
that's right now. It's a slight advantage. There's still twenty,
you know, six outs to go for our team, and
yet that picture's feeling really good about himself and my
(12:57):
buddy's walking past me on his way back to the
dugout zero for one. Whereas you know, everything goes the
other direction and you have a really good at bat.
You're walking up there, and so to me, I think
this team has more of a chance of that water
faucet being turned on, you know, to some significant level.
Speaker 5 (13:13):
And I think that they feel it.
Speaker 7 (13:15):
So you have the combination of, you know, a rose
Arena is not a rookie obviously, cal Rawley's no longer
a rookie. Julio is no longer a rookie, So they
understand that it can turn on a dime it really quickly.
You can turn your offense into you know, a team
that they've been scuffling to score a bunch of runs
as of late. Now, if that's good pitching, fine, If
(13:36):
it's poor execution and situation of baseball, that's certainly part
of it too. But I think this squad gets we
are deep enough now that it doesn't matter what inning
where we're at to start an inning, we can put
up a crooked number here, we can at least scrape
together a run, and we might do that multiple innings
in a row. So, I mean, I just feel like
there's a good combination of you got a bunch of
(13:58):
dudes that are kind of right in their prime, and
then you got guys like Polonko and Naylor that are
right there like, hey, just keep playing hard, right, I
think Naylor said yesterday, you play hard and good things happen.
If you approach your AB's the right way, good things
will happen. And I think right now you just have
a deep lineup where it doesn't really matter who's up there.
Speaker 5 (14:16):
They have a chance.
Speaker 2 (14:17):
Now.
Speaker 7 (14:17):
Obviously a guy like Polonko right now you're feeling a
little bit more so, but I mean I still feel
that way. I feel that way. I don't feel that
way when a Rosarine is at the dish right now,
but I feel that way with cal and Julio and
Polonko and Naylor, and don't really feel that way about Suarez.
I mean, JP from time to time comes through, but
he also has some some other times. It's I just
feel good about the entire lineup, and I think they
(14:39):
feel that right You can you can feel it when
you're up to bat. You can feel if your team
is over there like, oh he's got this, that's the
dude we want up right now, or if they're over
there like come on, man, one time, come through, and
that's not a good feeling when they're thinking the ladder.
Speaker 4 (14:53):
Well, we said yesterday on the show Hora Polonka, you
just have to get seven more game winning RBIs to suit. Well,
he only needs six now, yeah, so no big deal.
Just keep it up, Just keep doing what you're doing.
By the way, the record is five straight games. Kirk
Gibson had a game winning RBI in oh that was
not in the playoffs, though. This is different, different ball
(15:15):
game right here. So Jorges certainly been shining in the
big moment. Yet the three run homer to break the
three to three tie yesterday and the fifth and the
Mariners did not look back.
Speaker 5 (15:26):
They win at ten to three. Talk about the other
group of heroes.
Speaker 4 (15:30):
And that's the bullpen right now, because we knew starting
pitching was kind of up against it. You use three
of your starters from your rotation in one night, it's
gonna have a ripple effect on your rotation going into
the next series. There's just not enough time off in
between series when you play the fifth and final game
of the series. But the bullpen has certainly stepped up
(15:52):
in this series and has not for Toronto. It has
been the difference. We've banged around their bullpen and they
haven't touched hours. We have now gone nine innings nine
innings of relief in this series. One hit allowed from
our bullpen zero runs, one hit allowed, over nine innings
(16:12):
from this group, with Eddie Bizardo turning out to.
Speaker 5 (16:16):
Be the hero we didn't know we needed. Mm hmm, Yeah,
I mean I don't know for sure.
Speaker 7 (16:20):
We got the tried in obviously, almost feels like you
could have something just for those guys out of the
bullpen because we've watched how how temperamental and how volatile,
how big of relief pitching is, right, I mean, Gabe
Spier basically in that first series was what felt like
was going to be the difference whether or not you
(16:41):
won a game or when you didn't use him or
did use him, and if he came through or didn't
come through. Bizardo is just a dude that is kind
of He's a guy that when he came on the scene,
you're like, I don't know if I first sure like
what I see here? And yet boy his he turned
out to be an absolute godsend.
Speaker 8 (16:58):
Yeah, it's been there. I hate that.
Speaker 11 (17:02):
I still have the little apprehension because of what happened
with Spire over the last couple of games, but as
far as the rest of the bullpen, they've been impressive.
And yeah, when Bizardo came in yesterday. I was a
little nervous, obviously, with Logan going out so early, that
what are we going to do and how is this
bullpen going to get tired today? But they stepped up.
Speaker 8 (17:20):
They were awesome.
Speaker 5 (17:21):
Twenty five years from now.
Speaker 4 (17:22):
I was telling Bucky last night on the post game
show from Snow Qualmi Casino and Hotel. I was saying
that twenty five years from now, when Mariner fans are
sitting around on their barstools with young people who are like,
tell me about the good old days, Uncle Jerry, Uncle
Jerry's going to be like, well we had this guy,
the big Dumper.
Speaker 5 (17:43):
Oh, I know, the big Dumper, Uncle Jerry. Seattle people
don't sound like this at all.
Speaker 8 (17:47):
No, but I like it.
Speaker 5 (17:48):
Yeah. Oh I know about him. He's in the Hall
of Fame.
Speaker 4 (17:53):
Oh and then I don't have to tell you about
him or Julio I'm imagining.
Speaker 5 (17:56):
So let me tell you about Eddie Bizardo.
Speaker 4 (18:00):
You want to talk about a hero son, Yes, yeah,
two and two thirds in game five. Yeah, Bizardo's gonna
be one of those characters when people look back at
the Mariners twenty twenty five postseason run.
Speaker 5 (18:18):
However, deeper.
Speaker 4 (18:19):
It goes than this, but he's been sensational to this point.
And frankly, I think we're over. I mean, whatever we
had to do, Bizardo going eight outs Friday night, Gilbert
having to pitch out of the pen, Castillo having to
pitch out of the pen, that storm's over. We weathered
it and that's done. Next time we play a game,
George Kirby's going to be on full rest. Luis Castillo's
(18:41):
going to be on full rest for game number four.
Speaker 5 (18:43):
The bullpen should be right back realigned.
Speaker 4 (18:46):
You didn't even have to use brash Munnos or Spire
last night, so that'll be two full days off for
your top three guys out of the pen. And apparently
Bizarto can pitch whenever you want and pitch really well.
So yeah, to be up two to oh and to
be coming home for the next three days, my goodness.
Speaker 5 (19:05):
Yeah, Softie's right, Yeah.
Speaker 11 (19:09):
Softy to be a fly on the wall in Softy's
house and he's watching these games.
Speaker 5 (19:13):
Oh my god, poor Gina.
Speaker 4 (19:15):
All right, let's find out what's on tap for today's show.
Speaker 5 (19:21):
What's on TEP? What's on TEP?
Speaker 4 (19:25):
You know those National guys, Boy, they do some talking,
don't they. Well, we happen to have a national guy
who does a lot of talking over there at the
MLB Network who loves him some Seattle Mariners, and.
Speaker 5 (19:36):
He's going to join us today.
Speaker 4 (19:37):
Harold Reynolds will be with us today at eight o'clock
the former Mariner second basement. So we're excited to get
his thoughts about what's going on in this series and
beyond two and oh and coming home games three, four,
and five will be right here in Seattle at T Mobile.
We will play Tomorrow night, uh and then Thursday night
and if necessary, how about that being in control of
(19:58):
that asterisk. The only way it will be necessary is
if Toronto wins a game, so that would be on
Friday night, game number five. Meanwhile, the National League Championships
series got started last night. The Dodgers win a tight one.
Milwaukee made it very interesting, loaded the bases and scored
a run. So scored a run, loaded the bases. Bryce
(20:19):
Terrang had a chance to tie the game up, but
he bailed out of the way of a pitch that
would have hit him. It's called it just natural instinct.
If he takes that, you got a tie game. And
who knows what else. In Game number one, instead, Terrang
ends up striking out against Blake Trining on a pitch
out of the zone, and the Brewers do fall to
the Dodgers two to one in their game one. Game
(20:40):
two tonight, they've got the stage to themselves. It'll be
Yamamoto versus Peralta Freddy Peralta in that matchup. That's a
terrific starting pitching matchup there. Game time will be five
o'clock Monday Night football. Last night, the Bears won over
the Commanders twenty five to twenty four. Don't look now,
but the Bears have now won three straight games. They're
three and two. Meanwhile, all the Commanders are finding out
(21:01):
a little bit of the sophomore slump. They now sit
at three and three and just can't get going, can't
get healthy across the board, and they're struggling a little
bit after that deep run they made in the playoffs
a year ago. The Atlanta Falcons seem to have hit
their stride and they slap down the Buffalo Bills last
night twenty four to fourteen. So Michael Pennix has his
(21:22):
team at three and two. Meanwhile, the Bills are four
and two. On the season next Monday night. The Seahawks
will be playing Seahawks taking on the Texans next Monday night.
We haven't talked to Greg Bell since Friday, so our
Seahawks insider joins us today at seven oh five. Huskies
have a huge date in ann Arbor, Michigan this Saturday.
Rick new Isle will stop by for his normal Tuesday
(21:44):
segment at nine o'clock and the Cracking Back in action
their first road game of the brand new season. They'll
be in Montreal taking on the Canadiens. Everett fits you
will join us the guy that Bucky and I saw
first Friday night to celebrate the the divisional series win.
And so we'll chat with Everett about our time in
(22:04):
Detroit and of course about the matchup with the Canadians
tonight right here on kJ R. We'll do that at
eight thirty. So obviously a very busy show with a
lot of really important people on it. Mariners Morning After Though,
comes your way. Next, it's Chuck and Buck Sports Radio
ninety three point three kJ R f M.
Speaker 12 (22:24):
Here's is one too.
Speaker 5 (22:25):
Riguez looks one in the air down the line. If
it's it's gonna hence and it's gone.
Speaker 13 (22:32):
Polio Rodriguez with a three run shot of the first
inning fall to strike muscles.
Speaker 14 (22:39):
I'm not tired.
Speaker 13 (22:41):
Scarner goes first to third. Lucas knocks in another after
the deck in time shot to at center field. Varshow
on the run, he's at the truck.
Speaker 6 (22:55):
He's in there.
Speaker 5 (22:56):
It's gone. Fit's put on gone again. Jorge Polanco is
owning October for the Mariners.
Speaker 13 (23:07):
Fined the deep atfield, Beckles Lucas.
Speaker 5 (23:09):
At the bye, third home run of the game for
the Manors. Blesting their way through Game two, they meet
up nine to three.
Speaker 4 (23:23):
Hey, good morning, Mariner's rep. Two zero in the American
League Championship Series. Work to do, but that means they
are just two wins shy of their first World Series
appearance in franchise history, and they're coming home three straight
games on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at t Mobile.
Speaker 5 (23:45):
To try to finish off the Blue Jays.
Speaker 4 (23:47):
But tremendous start for this team in the ALCS A
ten to three win last night. It was tied at
three in the fifth inning when or A Polanco with
a three run homer to double up the Blue Jays,
and then the team never looked back.
Speaker 5 (24:02):
Ten three.
Speaker 4 (24:03):
Your final score. The Mariners up two to oho in
the ALCS. Good morning, It is Chuck, Buck and Ashley
with you here on this Tuesday. We got a lot
of stuff planned for you, but we start the seven
o'clock hour with your headlines brought to you by Frost

it at eight o'clock. The Dodgers and Brewers got their
series started last night. On the National League side of things.
The Dodgers win a tight one two to one the
(24:44):
final score. They'll play game number two tonight at five
Yamamoto versus Peralta.
Speaker 5 (24:49):
A great pitching matchup there Monday Night football.
Speaker 4 (24:52):
The Chicago Bears have won three straight games twenty five
twenty four. The final score in Caleb Williams first head
to head matchup with Jade and Daniels of their careers.
Speaker 5 (25:02):
Meanwhile, Atlanta is on a roll.
Speaker 4 (25:04):
Michael Pennix leads the Falcons past Josh Allen and the
Bills twenty four fourteen. The Falcons now three and two
on the season. Husky's at Michigan this Saturday, they'll be
playing at the Big House. Rick new Aiswall will join
us at nine o'clock to talk about it, crack and
play their first road game of the season in Montreal
this evening. Everett will join us at eight point thirty
(25:26):
to discuss that. And of course there's a lot of
Seahawks stuff to discuss with our Seahawks insider Greg Bell.
We haven't chatted with him since Friday. I think it's
high time we do it now. That's called an international
multi sport sports rider right there. You can't stop Greg Bell.
You can only hope to contain him.
Speaker 7 (25:44):
Yeah, giving that as futile, Hey, Greg, will you do
me a favor and bring back a Looney in a
Tony to show these guys what they are. They didn't
know that those things existed.
Speaker 8 (25:53):
I knew a loony, I just didn't remember the Tony part.
Speaker 15 (25:55):
Oh okayty Tuney's are great for leaving tips for people.
Speaker 2 (26:01):
It's just very easy to Yeah.
Speaker 5 (26:03):
How look has that currency been around? Is that like
men around? I mean, were looney tunes named after loonies
and toonies? Probably at least thirty.
Speaker 15 (26:13):
Five years I've been going to Canada, they've had tonies. Yeah,
it's h a two dollar coin basically.
Speaker 5 (26:19):
Huh huh. I'll be damn, I'll be damn weird people
up there all right?
Speaker 15 (26:25):
Who knew that there was a Jacksonville to Toronto play?
Speaker 2 (26:29):
I didn't I even know that existed.
Speaker 5 (26:30):
You got a direct one.
Speaker 2 (26:32):
I was here in two hours and their Canada, little
little commuter plane.
Speaker 5 (26:36):
Look at that? Look at that?
Speaker 4 (26:38):
So how much fun was last night from your perspective?
Speaker 2 (26:41):
Then?
Speaker 15 (26:42):
You know what was really cool is they've at first
Then when I saw it, I was like, oh, of
course they did. And what used to be Skydom when
I was a baseball beat writer the press boxes right
behind home plate, and as most stadiums have done, they've
sold those seats because they can profit off of them.
They put the media out, in this case, pretty much
by the left field thophole. Hily Rodriguez's home run the
(27:04):
first thing last Nay pretty much went right under me.
But where we were down the left field deep left
field line in the corner with my binoculars, I was
looking straight into the Mariner's dugout and I saw all
kinds of stuff they were doing. After Bizardo came out
of the game after his two scoreless sentings, I thought
he was an unsung hero of the game. And how
(27:24):
he and the bullpen reset their rotation for the rest
of it, not only the rest of the series, but
they go to the World Series.
Speaker 9 (27:30):
Now.
Speaker 15 (27:31):
The work that they did, the three relievers did last
night without having to use a high leverage big big deal.
Speaker 1 (27:36):
I wrote this story for the distribute about that.
Speaker 15 (27:38):
But anyway, when Bizardo comes out of the game and
put my binoculars during the TV time out and between
Ennings and Dan Wilson gave him a huge hug in
the middle of the dugout, and then July Rodriguez gave
him two hugs. And then Rodriguez was showing him. You
could tell it's the first time he'd ever done it,
this elaborate handshaking thing.
Speaker 2 (28:00):
How they do damn whatever.
Speaker 15 (28:02):
But at the end of it, Rodriganz that starts PANTOMI
I mean, twirling a lasso rope over his head like
a cowboy, and he's twirling around and dancing like he's
in a bar somewhere in.
Speaker 2 (28:16):
Fifth Street in Austin.
Speaker 15 (28:18):
It was Bizarres just kind of looking at him.
Speaker 2 (28:20):
They're both laughing, really loose groove.
Speaker 15 (28:23):
I guess winning does that, but it's not like they're
daunted by the stage and they're talking about that.
Speaker 2 (28:29):
Thegetherness that they have is coming in really handy right now.
Speaker 12 (28:31):
And yeah, it was.
Speaker 15 (28:33):
It was kind of an interesting way to watch the
game with the binoccas into the dugout because there was
a side show going on there.
Speaker 5 (28:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (28:40):
Yeah, it's pretty interesting. I mean they are definitely loosey goosey.
I mean when what was the difference. You've been here
for some of the Seattle games and yet it kind
of felt Morgish there in Toronto.
Speaker 2 (28:52):
Yeah, yeah it was.
Speaker 15 (28:55):
I mean it was so quiet when Irigae set the
home run and then Gilbert lets him back in the
game and got loud.
Speaker 2 (29:01):
Again, and then the Polanco blast, it was.
Speaker 15 (29:05):
Yeah, there was a spattering of Mariner fans right behind
the dugout. There were all Josh Nabler's family from Missus
Massagua right outside Toronto, and that was about the only
noise you could hear in the whole place. Yeah, it
was the environment. Rodriguez's home run really took the starts
out of the whole place from the get go, and
(29:27):
then the Blue Jays were chasing him.
Speaker 2 (29:29):
It didn't feel like the road game after that year.
Speaker 4 (29:32):
Gonna be plenty of starts waiting for uh, waiting for
the Blue Jays here, And of course everybody's wondering how
many Blue Jays fans are going to find their way
in because we know what happens during the regular season
in this matchup, so it'll be curious, but it's certainly
going to be electric Wednesday for Game number three. Greg
Belli is with US our Seahawks insider, but for the
(29:53):
News Tribune they sent him to Toronto. He's covering some
Mariners baseball here in the playoffs as well, So we
get to hit Greg bell with all sorts of questions
these days. But we haven't talked to you about the
Seahawks win over Jacksonville. I mean, how does Mike McDonald
explain how his defense could play so poorly, couldn't cover,
(30:13):
couldn't get after Baker Mayfield with the pass rush the
previous game, and then against.
Speaker 5 (30:18):
Good Jacksonville team. I much improved Jacksonville team. Suddenly.
Speaker 4 (30:22):
The coverage was outstanding, the pass rush was outstanding. How
do you change that much in one week.
Speaker 15 (30:29):
Well, it all comes back to tackling, which is what
they focused on last week. They tackled at ten in
the early downs, and that created I mean, I wrote
it's been a few days in a couple of games since,
but I wrote the third downs that Jacksonville had third
and eleven, third and sixteen, third and fourteen, third and twelve,
(30:50):
third and nine. I think it was like ten plays
of third and nine and more. It was the opposite
against Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers the week before. They
were on Church short third downs. It's a lot harder
to cover in the NFL third and three because they
can do anything. They can roll out, run past quick slants,
they can run quick outs, they can run hitches. It's
(31:12):
hard to cover those. But when it's third and sixteen,
now you can cover for four or five seconds. That's
a whole different proposition. Then your pass rush can get
to the quarterback, which it did for seven sacks, a
season high. I thought it was all due to the
early six A McDonald said it after the game. Putting
him in such third and long situations is how the
(31:33):
pass rush went off and the quarterback having to hold
the ball longer because his receivers are running seventeen yard
routes instead of four yard routes. It's subtle, but it's
a huge difference, and that's what happened. They tackled well
on early downs. Speaking of tackling, nick Emun Worry was
the best tackling in the field, and I think you
(31:53):
now seeing what we all saw during every day and
practices during preseason as to why they're going to play
him everywhere. He's a short tackler open field, right away
in the backfield, receivers open field have to catch.
Speaker 12 (32:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (32:07):
Name Warrior really impressed me on Sunday.
Speaker 7 (32:10):
Yeah, he was pretty impressive, well other than that one
where Travis Hunter juked him out of his Yeah, but
then again, I think he can do that dating boat right.
Speaker 2 (32:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (32:21):
Yeah, I mean so part of the you know, the
defense stepping up obviously limiting them to twelve points.
Speaker 5 (32:27):
It makes it where it's not that big of a
deal that you only scored twenty.
Speaker 7 (32:30):
You were talking about the way in which the pass
rush was working, but they they shut him down. As
far as the run game goes as well, they couldn't
get anything going there. What did you see out of
the front seven?
Speaker 15 (32:41):
Well, exactly, they tackled, and they tackled on early downs
at the line of scrimmage. At the end was averaging
almost six yards of carry. Most of his games, they
hadn't even barely had three yards to carry. I think
it was fifty nine yards for the game. They were
averaging one hundred and fifteen. Coming into the game, they
were the fifth best rushing team in the league, and
they nothing. And Leonon Williams had a really good game
(33:03):
in that regard to Marcus Lawrence saw the sacks, but
he was also crushing and throat the alignement, collapsing down
the edges of the Jaguars offensive line. There are two
ed guys when they play as well as they did,
Williams and Lawrence, running games is going to fail. Tackles
were getting pushed into guards. That why Atten didn't have
(33:25):
anywhere to run, and then that created the third and lungs.
Speaker 4 (33:29):
Greg bellis with US our Seahawks insider. Of course, you
can follow his coverage at the Newstribune dot com. He's
covering Mariners and Seahawks these days, and he is our
regular guest here at seven five on Chuck and Buck
in the mornings. So I mean that we're talking about
a big chunk of the season now that Julian Love
and Devin Witherspoon have missed. I mean they weren't placed
(33:51):
on IR So it clearly is a week the week
situation here. But is there any good news to report?
Are they close to getting back? Because I got the
depression that they're pretty important to this team.
Speaker 2 (34:03):
They are. I still think Witherspoon's the best player on
the team.
Speaker 15 (34:06):
He's been getting sent out for more tests and offsite
and it's not clear when he's gonna come back, and
it may not be this week, it may not be
till after the buy in a couple of weeks. McDonald
has learned to just not say a whole lot about
injuries because he doesn't know a lot about him. He
doesn't want to know a lot about him, and he's
(34:27):
more you'll find out when he's ba type of thing.
But he's not committing to Weatherspoon being able to play
this week, even with the extra day. They're off today,
they're off tomorrow. They're gonna take it at Wednesday off
and then Thursday's gonna become their Wednesday for the Monday
night game. So they get two full days off here
and really two and a half three because they weren't
on the field for Monday. They just did film and
(34:48):
treatment coming back from Florida. So this is almost another
mini MANI buy. And they don't even think Witherspoon. I
won't say that, but McDonald won't commit to Witherspoon coming back.
Love seems to be ahead of him. It's a hamstring
for love, but to be determined. I don't know the
answer to that yet.
Speaker 2 (35:07):
And it doesn't sound like Witherspon's any time soon. Gee.
Speaker 7 (35:11):
I was listening to a show on the way in
and Adam Scheffner was on. There was talking about the
trade deadline, how much more active it's gotten in the
last few years, and I mean he's thinking that between
now and November fourth, the trade deadline, there could be
fifteen more trades to add to the three that have
already already happened. Do you expect the Mariners to be
in on any of that? I mean, especially considering what
(35:32):
you're just talking about with some of the injuries.
Speaker 2 (35:35):
The Mariners trade someone right now. They're gonna be an
uprising but not Mariners. Yeah, let's not trade. Maybe a
World Series team made it.
Speaker 5 (35:45):
Yeah, that's kid.
Speaker 2 (35:46):
I'm sorry I had to teach.
Speaker 15 (35:47):
I get you, you and I are you and I
are in the same boat as far as that goes
right now, which which team I'm covering.
Speaker 5 (35:53):
Yeah, they're gonna be act.
Speaker 2 (35:54):
They're gonna try. They they we already know and that
didn't need a leak to.
Speaker 15 (35:59):
Tell us that they were. Wouldn't mind trading Wooland. But
now he's concussed and the league rules are you can't
trade an injured player. He's gonna have to come back
to play first and show so he can showcase.
Speaker 2 (36:11):
Him a little bit. I don't know that they're gonna
be able to.
Speaker 15 (36:13):
Do that at this point with Woolan, it might be
worth keeping him because if he leaves as a free
agent at the end of his rookie deal at the
end of this season, they could get a third round
pick for him because he's already made a Pro Bowl
and as many snaps as he's played, by the NFL's
calculation for comp picks, he should be I would think
knocking on the door of the top tier, which is
a third round comptick. So if you're the Seahawks, if
(36:35):
you don't get a third round offered, then why would
you trade him?
Speaker 2 (36:38):
And nobody's gonna offer.
Speaker 15 (36:39):
I wouldn't think anyone would offer a third round pick
for him, So I don't think he's getting traded for
those reasons. But they're always trying to depth on the
offensive defensive line. Jonathan Hankins is still on the team,
but not playing and nowhere near coming back.
Speaker 2 (36:55):
It's still in the injured list from the off season, so.
Speaker 15 (36:58):
They could use more defensive tackles it Brandon Peaey come
up at nose tackle off the practice squad a couple
of times. Trading is.
Speaker 2 (37:08):
John Schneider for the depth pieces. He'd rather pick him.
Speaker 15 (37:11):
Up off waiver wires, practice squads of other teams and
free agents. Then they give up a trade asset for him.
So it wouldn't surprise me if the Seahawks aren't.
Speaker 2 (37:21):
Don't actually pull one off. They'd like to in a
couple of cases, but I don't know if they actually
will do it.
Speaker 5 (37:25):
I don't think he can help himself.
Speaker 4 (37:27):
You know, everything you say makes logical, reasonable sense, But
I think he just wants to play like I want
to ask, Oh yeah, if he'll left out, I'm not
going to sell.
Speaker 5 (37:36):
I'm not going to just look to move pieces. I
got to add something here.
Speaker 4 (37:40):
And if you are if there is a weakness on
this team, Greg's still running the football for goodness sake,
and I don't know if there's an offensive lineman out
there that fixes that. And maybe you could tell me
when Robbie Oots is going to be back. I didn't
expect him to be so valuable to this run attack,
but it seems like they miss him.
Speaker 1 (38:02):
They do.
Speaker 15 (38:03):
They did have Brady Russell in the backfield as a
fullback a couple of times, but you're right, they're still
not running the ball at the darn and it makes
what Sam Darnold is doing at quarterback even more impressive
because this isn't how it's supposed to operate. He was
carrying them at times on Sunday without any other offense
than his papping.
Speaker 2 (38:21):
And he was really good.
Speaker 15 (38:22):
That throw sixty one yard touchdown to Smith and Jigbu
was the best throw I've seen him make any practice
against air any That was the best throw I've seen
him make, perfectly on time, right onto Smith and Jigg's
hands and stride. But this is not how they're supposed
to function offensively. That's what they're still chasing. We said
(38:43):
it would be a work in progress in the offense,
in the running game, run blocking for a while, and
we're only still a month into the season, so it
still may take a while. But we've seen Kubiak's going.
Speaker 2 (38:53):
To keep trying.
Speaker 5 (38:54):
All right, man, great stuff.
Speaker 15 (38:56):
Oh, I do want to say one thing, sure, I'm
want to say one thing. Yeah, I wanted to make
Byron Murphy's week. I when he told me that he
had a daughter born last week on Tuesday, that was
three months premature. I almost cried in the press conference room.
Our twins, my wife and I was twins were born
(39:17):
nine weeks earlier, and they were three pounds each. Brian
Murphy's daughter was two and a half pounds.
Speaker 2 (39:24):
I can't tell you the hell on earth that nick
you is for a new parent, the first time parent,
like Brian Murphy is. I was in my twenties. When
I was my twins were in the nick You.
Speaker 15 (39:32):
The scariest thing I've ever been in is a nick you.
Speaker 2 (39:36):
The nick you nurses are angels on earth.
Speaker 15 (39:38):
Anybody out there who knows that nick you nurse and
might be listening to the nick you nurse, You're the
greatest people on earth. The week he had, I can't
even begin to describe to you for anyone who would
care so much. Of course he would about his newborn daughter.
He didn't get any sleep. He could say, well, it's.
Speaker 2 (39:56):
Hard to sleep.
Speaker 15 (39:57):
He didn't get any sleep, and he's worried sick about
that baby girl who's still in the hospital. He said,
everything's great, growth she's on It's amazing that she's two
and a half pounds of not needing a ventilator, breathing
on her own. You should have seen the smile on
his face when he told me that. And it ain't
not just about football, man. These guys have real.
Speaker 2 (40:18):
Lives, and it was so cool.
Speaker 15 (40:21):
That was one of favorite stories I've ever written, just
because it hits so close to home to me. But
just so you know, he has the game of his
life in two sacks and said he never had a
sack on the first.
Speaker 2 (40:32):
Play of a game, but he wasn't playing with football
in his mind s. Man.
Speaker 4 (40:36):
Well check it out the Neewstremune dot com. You can
check out that story, all of Greg's coverage of both
the Seahawks and the Mariners.
Speaker 5 (40:44):
Thanks man, great stuff.
Speaker 2 (40:46):
Appreciate it. I'll be back home for Game three tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (40:49):
All right, we'll see you.
Speaker 4 (40:51):

Speaker 13 (41:49):
Shot to right, Sierfield Varshow on the one he's up
the track, It's gone bits.
Speaker 5 (41:55):
Put On gone again.
Speaker 15 (41:58):
Poorge pull On is.
Speaker 5 (42:00):
Owning October for the Mariners. He's giving him a six
to three lead.
Speaker 4 (42:07):
Hey, good morning, Mariners are up two oh in the
American League Championship Series. How does that fit you here
this morning? Probably better than your own pants. Fits me
like a glove, fits you like a glove.
Speaker 5 (42:19):
You've never looked better.
Speaker 4 (42:20):
Thanks, Yeah, Bucky Jacobson, former Mariner. My name is Chuck Powell.
Ashley Ryan here as well. We roll into our eight
o'clock hour with the knowledge that the Mariners are up
two oh in the ALCS against the Toronto Blue Jays,
taking both games on the road, and now they come
home for games three, four, and five if necessary right
(42:41):
here at T Mobile, joining us now on the program.
He is the face of the MLB network. He is
the former second baseman of your Seattle Mariners.
Speaker 5 (42:50):
He made highlight play after a highlight play for you
here in.
Speaker 4 (42:53):
Seattle, switch hitter, and what a smile. Harold Reynolds now
joins is here on Chuck and Buck in the morning.
Speaker 9 (43:02):
Good morning, sir, Hey, isn't it a good morning?
Speaker 5 (43:05):
It's it's a great Oh yeah, I thought it was going.
Speaker 9 (43:09):
To be a two ho lead beautiful.
Speaker 5 (43:12):
Uh yeah, you know what, I'm not surprised by it.
I'll tell you that.
Speaker 4 (43:15):
What's the what's the feel around the MLB Network studios.
Is everyone there surprised.
Speaker 2 (43:20):
But you.
Speaker 9 (43:22):
Uh no, not really. I mean we've had a kind
of a split. I mean, Toronto was playing so well.
When you take down the Yankees and we're out of East,
everybody thinks that's the greatest thing ever. But we did
have a lot of people that felt like it was
the World Series is going to be Seattle in la
and uh, it's looking that way right now. But the
Maritas are playing great ball. They're just playing uh, they're
(43:44):
executing the pitching. You know, everything you guys are talking about.
Speaker 7 (43:47):
I'm sure, yeah, obviously, I mean the way that they're pitching,
it's I mean, it's been a few years where it's
kind of felt like this squad was set up as
far as the pitching staff goes to make some make
some hay in October and if they could just get
into the postseason. Right now, it's kind of coming to fruition,
even with that fifteen inning game. So I mean, how
big is it for the way in which Bizardo and
(44:09):
company came in yesterday to just kind of close that
thing out and let them reset their rotation.
Speaker 16 (44:15):
Yeah, I thought even Game one, you know, even before
yesterday's game, Game one, with the way Miller pitched, coming
after that fifteen inning game really kind of set them up.
Speaker 9 (44:26):
And you know what's unique about Seattle is the starting
pitching is going deep in the game. And what I
mean by unique is most of these clubs are playing
bullpen games. We saw yesterday the Brewers play the first
game of the series and they start with open earns,
a bullpen game, and that's kind of been a strategy
the last three years. So it's refreshing to see a
(44:47):
team like Seattle going out there with starting pitching saying
we're going to go as long as we can and
then we'll get to the pin.
Speaker 4 (44:54):
We don't even have our arguably best starter available, yet
he's still coming. It looks like later this series in
Brian Wu So yeah, I mean, what an advantage in
today's day and age. How much credit do you give
the Mariners organization. Most people give it credit, Harold for
the way they develop and the way that they find
(45:14):
pitching talent, but the way that they keep it healthy
because a lot of these organizations get to the end
of the year and they're lucky to have one or
two quality starters.
Speaker 15 (45:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (45:25):
No, they've done a great job. And it's depth, you know,
that's what keeps it going for them. They've done a tremendous.
Speaker 1 (45:31):
Job with that.
Speaker 9 (45:32):
But I think also I need to give Jerry a
lot of credit. You know, he's taking a lot of
hits through the years. But the run that they're on
right now and John Stanton that they've been able to
keep this pitching at the right time. Now, we're going
to run into a scenario here in a couple of years,
so you're gonna start paying guys and we might see
(45:53):
some changes with the with what happens with the guys.
But right now they're hitting at the right time. And
I thought going to get the offense that they needed
to go get a trade deadline is the only reason
we're sitting there having this conversation today. Yeah, we've watched
this before where they had great pitching, great year, they
just didn't hit and going to get those two guys,
(46:15):
and I know they haven't hit like they're capable of,
but just lathening the lineup has forced clubs to have
to pitch a lot deeper to a better team. So
that to me is a bigger reason we're sitting here today.
Speaker 7 (46:29):
Yeah, Harold, how big is that in the postseason? I mean,
you know how it is just day to day throughout
the season, where as a team when you feel like
I don't have to put a bunch of pressure on
myself because if I don't come through, the dude behind
me or pick me up and so on and so
forth throughout the whole thing. But you get into the postseason,
there's so much hanging in the balance of every single pitch,
every single bat.
Speaker 5 (46:49):
How important is it to war this team?
Speaker 7 (46:52):
Because I'm sure that these guys are feeling like I
don't have to go out there and get it done,
because it does feel like one through nine had some
guys that are going to compete.
Speaker 9 (47:01):
Well, yeah, because what it does it taxes that pitcher.
You know, every pitch now is a concentration pitchet, and
it's loud, and you make a mistake, it shows up
and it just puts repeated pressure on We'll go yesterday's game,
I mean the first inning, you all of a sudden
now where you walk the leadoff guy and then Here
(47:22):
comes cal, here comes Julio, and you know, down the
road you got two more even even got to Sware
as yet or Nailor with the power. So it changes
the whole dynamic of everything as you're looking through the roster.
And then I did not over skip Polanco. That kid
is rolling right now. He's playing tremendous ball. But it
(47:43):
just shows you that there's so many guys that can
hurt you. And that's that's the beauty of having a
length in a lineup.
Speaker 4 (47:50):
Former Mariner Second Basement Rold Reynolds our guest of course
with MLB Network now MLB Network's MLB Tonight, the National
Pregame Show Award winning National Pregame Show is coming up
later today at three pm Pacific time. And through the
World Series, of course, Harold sits along Greg Amsinger, who's
(48:11):
come a long way with his baseball knowledge, by the way,
and then the goofy asked Dan plea Sack as well,
So are you guys are you arguing over Brewers versus
Mariners right now?
Speaker 5 (48:22):
You and Plea Sack.
Speaker 9 (48:24):
You know, Dan is so funny, like he's the all
time saves leader for the Brewers, but he's played with
like fourteen teams. So he's the biggest front runner in
the world. And you know, so he's all big blue
Toronto because he pitchs there, you know. And then it
was the Cubs, and then it was the Brewers. I'm like, Dan,
(48:44):
come on now, and he didn't pitch in Seattle, so
I'm like, don't even try to clan the Mariners. So
it's funny. We have a blast with those guys. It's
a good time.
Speaker 4 (48:54):
Yeah, it's a great watch. You guys are awesome. I
thoroughly enjoy it.
Speaker 5 (49:00):
All right.
Speaker 4 (49:00):
So you brought up Horiy Polonko. I think we need
to spend more time on him. You were a mayor
in her second basement. He's the current mayorner second basement.
And man, he has just come through time and time
again here in the playoffs. What was the book on
Jorgey Polonko? And is anything he's doing surprising you right now?
In these playoffs?
Speaker 9 (49:20):
He's always been able to hit the knock. Was kind
of at when he was a shortstop. He just wasn't
a short stop. And then trying to figure out I say,
more than anything, the reason that he's had the struggle
of finding work so to speak, is more where the
industry's at. You know, with age, they just kind of
push guys off and give him one year deals. But
(49:41):
he's made some money and the opportunity to keep going forward.
But as a player, the thing I see with him
is the intelligence. I look at how he is attacking
these pictures. He's got a game plan, the experience is
coming up. It's almost like I'm looking back and I'm
seeing and a guy that's been sitting there talking to
(50:02):
Edgar Martinez. You know, I can see Edgar was so
stubborn with his approach, like I got a game plan,
I'm staying here, I'm trusted it. They're gonna throw me
my pitch to hit them boom. And I see the
same thing with Jorge. You know where he takes trek
scuoble deep twice. It's not by accident. He knew what
he was looking for and then the last couple of
(50:24):
days to come up big with plut situations. He knows
what he's looking for. So I think he's a He's
a tremendous student, and right now he's able to execute it.
But I can see the influence of Edgar and I
can see the influence of Sitzer with Stan consistently you're swaying.
I think those two have had a huge influence on him.
Speaker 5 (50:45):
Harold.
Speaker 7 (50:46):
I don't think you and Dan Wilson's careers overlapped here
in Seattle. I think yours was winding down as his
was just getting started. But when you watch him from Afar,
I mean the one he gets, he gets every manager
is going to have their care out there, and if
you're kind of a rookie where he was, you know,
took over last year and did well and then this
was his first full season. When you watch them, I
(51:08):
see a guy that just kind of even keel and
then he believes in his guys, I mean down to
the Edward Bizardo kind of had one bad game in
the in the previous series, uh, and yet he bounced
back from that. Spire had a couple bad outings, and
yet he bounced back from that. How much do you
think it plays a good role in the mindset of
(51:28):
these players considering I think that their manager most certainly
believes in them and they feel it.
Speaker 9 (51:35):
Uh, yeah a lot. I mean two two things that
stood out to me. One, most of these guys watched
Dan Wilson play. You know when they were growing up.
If you follow the Mariners and you follow Griffy, you
follow the great runs. Uh, these guys got a chance
to really kind of see that group as they were
growing up. So I think that's that's a big part
(51:56):
of it. And then secondly, he's been around the organization
even when he wasn't managing, So they have a personal
different personal relationship with Dan and now he becomes a manager.
But there was one scene yesterday I pointed it out
in Game one that really tells me a lot about
(52:16):
Dan Wilson and the Mariners, and it's when cal Rawley,
after Ryce Miller has runs on first and second, after
he's gett up the lid off Homer and cal Rawy
walks out to the mound, calls time, and walks out,
and not one single infielder comes to the huddle. You
know how there's a pitchy change in a conversation. You
see every infielder come in there and try the attitude sets.
Speaker 5 (52:38):
Hanging there, buddy, you know whatever.
Speaker 9 (52:41):
And it was just cal and Miller, And that's Dan
Wilson letting him have the free reign of understanding. My
catcher knows how to run the game. And I think
that's what Lou did with Dan, and I can see
that with and that relationship is big. There's so much
(53:03):
leadership and so much ability for him to run things.
I think that's a direct descendant from Loopanela trusting and
Dan Wilson and Dan Wilson pouring that into his catcher
and his teammates feet off of that. Just like you
go back now and you talk to the guys about
those teams that Dan played on. He clearly ran the
(53:24):
pitching staff. He was a big time leader on that team.
And I think you see it with cal Well.
Speaker 4 (53:30):
Speaking of the dumper, we're seeing John Schneider approach him
completely differently than he has in past games, regular season games.
He's being careful with him. I mean, it's just been
one year of cal Raley, you know, behaving at the
plate like Babe Ruth. But has this magical year that
he's had. I mean every time he went into a
(53:51):
series like don't let Barry Bonds beat you, don't let
Aaron Judge beat you. Has cal rally earned that in
this one year? Do you have to pitch a round
him if you're going to face cal Raleigh?
Speaker 15 (54:02):
Now?
Speaker 9 (54:04):
Uh? Yeah, it's been a transformative year. And I think
the one thing you don't hit sixty home runs without
being able to do a lot of damage from both
sides of the plate against a number of pitchers. And
I think the one thing that I always look at
is is he hitting good pitching? Is he doing this
(54:24):
off of good pictures? And if you look at his
resume of guys that he's homered off of, he's doing
it off of good pitching. So that's where you get
that next step, that next level of greatness. And I
think Cal's entered into that territory and he's taken off
of he had a big year last year for a catcher,
(54:44):
he just didn't get sixty homers, you know. So now
he's gone to a whole another level and you can
see the respect that they're pitching him with in this series.
Speaker 7 (54:54):
Harold, you had mentioned earlier the good moves that Jerry
and Justin had made. I mean, the I think the
best one is the Josh Naylor ad there at the
trade deadline.
Speaker 5 (55:04):
I just love the grit that he plays with. I mean,
take us inside.
Speaker 7 (55:08):
Somebody that's been in a clubhouse understands that was one
of those guys that how important it is to have
somebody that kind of plays with a certain level of
intensity that makes sure everybody else plays the same well.
Speaker 9 (55:19):
It raises everybody else, It raises their their their their drive.
And when you have one hundred and sixty two games,
it's easy to get for playoff games, but one hundred
and sixty two games, there's gonna be those days where
you just feel like, Eh, I don't know, asked Buck about.
He knows I'm talking about. There's some days you drag
and then the series is like, oh, the Yankees are
coming in to town, let's go. When you have a
(55:41):
Josh Naylor every day coming in who slams his head
with the bat if he doesn't get a hit and
he's not afraid to get in somebody's face, that raises
the level of enthusiasm, excitement, and concentration. So I love
what he plays with. I love what he's on top
of that, he's crazy talented. He's made the defense better.
(56:04):
He can flat out here and he's stealing bags, all
the things he's doing, he's really an impressive player.
Speaker 5 (56:12):
Yeah, we're calling him Thicky Henderson these days. With all
of this that.
Speaker 9 (56:18):
I'm gonna use that.
Speaker 4 (56:19):
Yeah, I afraid that. Yeah, take that material, run with it.
I'll be very proud to hear it on MLB tonight
later on today. All right, so we know how crazy
baseball can be, and you can't take anything for granted,
but to win both games on the road, considering a
little bit of a storm they had to weather coming
out of that long, fifteen inning marathon Friday night, I mean,
(56:43):
where's the avenue that Toronto gets back into this series?
Speaker 5 (56:48):
If there is one that you can see.
Speaker 9 (56:52):
It's gonna be tough. And because the Mariners are now
have their pitching rested, and you talked about earlier, Wu
hasn't even pitched yet. Yeah, so you know they're not hitting.
Toronto hit some balls at people quite a bit in
that series. So if I'm them, I'm saying, hey, some
(57:12):
balls are gonna start to fall. But on the Mariner's side,
they neutralize them and allowed to get the lead early.
It kind of changes how they got to play their
style of play. And we can continue to do that,
get the lead and continue to keep the pressure on
those those hitters. Good things are gonna happen. I just
don't see losing this series when you go up to
(57:35):
oh and you win to in Toronto. I just don't
see it.
Speaker 4 (57:38):
All right, So are you gonna get here for any
of this? I mean, you should have been a part
of that Friday Night. I've never felt an atmosphere like
that in a baseball game. So are you gonna get here?
Are you gonna wait until to see if we make
the World Series? What's the play Former Mariner Harold Reynolds.
Speaker 9 (57:53):
Well, there's two scenarios. One. Obviously, I'm covering the World Series.
I will be on ground wherever it's at. I'm playing
on that be in Seattle. But with this being the
first time the Mariners can go to a World Series,
if it goes to a Game six or a Game seven,
which I'm kind of hoping it doesn't at this point
in time, but if it does, I'm gonna go to
(58:15):
those games and then I'll stay for the rest of
the World Series.
Speaker 5 (58:18):
Okay, but at this point.
Speaker 9 (58:22):
I'm expecting them to be able to get through this thing,
and it may. You know, this team's not going away.
Toronto's not gonna go away. I don't see a four
games suite, but I do see the Mariners winning this thing.
Speaker 4 (58:34):
Well, once they do win it, please rub it in,
please sex face for us.
Speaker 2 (58:39):
All agree.
Speaker 9 (58:40):
Yeah, he'll be wearing he'll probably grab the titan from
everybody and be holding that thing up. And he's been
talking Mariners the whole time.
Speaker 4 (58:50):
All right, man, Hey, thanks, great to hear from you,
and we'll bug you again later in the world series
if it comes to it.
Speaker 5 (58:56):
How about that, looking.
Speaker 9 (58:58):
Forward to it, even meet you guys in person.
Speaker 14 (59:02):
Let's do that.
Speaker 4 (59:03):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, well we'll bug you, that's for sure.
You don't have to tell us twice. We'll annoy the
hell out of you once you're in town.
Speaker 5 (59:09):
Thanks man, Appreciate you.
Speaker 9 (59:11):
All right, Chuck, but appreciate you guys.
Speaker 12 (59:13):
Thank you.
Speaker 4 (59:14):
Harold Reynolds joining us right here on Chuck and Buck
of course at MLB Networks MLB tonight the National pregame show.
Speaker 5 (59:22):
It's one awards like wins awards all the time, those guys.
Speaker 4 (59:25):
Uh, So we appreciate him coming on, sharing his thoughts
on the ALCS. Coming up later, Ryan Healey will join us.
He's going to meet somebody special today. He'll meet up
the old judge for the first time. But coming up
next on the radio program, it's the guy that I
hugged first after the Mariners clinched the A L d
(59:46):
S Sports Radio ninety three point three kJ R f M.
Good Tuesday morning to you, Ashley. Ryan's here, former Mariner
Bucket Jacobson. My name is Chuck Powell and joining us
(01:00:06):
now on the program. There's a grown man that I
hugged on the way out of t mobiles. You did
after the victory, And then I didn't even realize. I
got out to the street and I'm like, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (01:00:17):
I know.
Speaker 4 (01:00:18):
I know that Everett loves Seattle, and I know that
he likes the Mariners, but he did grow up a
Tiger fan. I hope I didn't hug Everett fits you
when he was in a sad, sad period of his
life coming down.
Speaker 5 (01:00:31):
He was there a little bit. He had Tiger gear on.
Speaker 9 (01:00:34):
Ah.
Speaker 4 (01:00:35):
Oh, so sorry if my enthusiasm got all over your
Tiger gear, Everett, sorry about that.
Speaker 1 (01:00:43):
No, listen, I will say this right now. And I
just pulled lastly a second ago.
Speaker 3 (01:00:50):
There was a part of me, a large part of me,
that when the Mariners won that game, I found myself.
Speaker 1 (01:00:56):
In a state of happiness.
Speaker 3 (01:00:57):
You know, I don't know if it was because I
was caught up and all the reguilda and whatnot. But honestly,
the Tigers losing wasn't as sad as as.
Speaker 1 (01:01:07):
I thought it was gonna be. And I think it's because,
you know, I go to fifteen twenty games a year.
Speaker 3 (01:01:12):
My son is he called JP, Crawford, Julio and Cal
his best friends. Uh So it's you know, it's listen,
I I the Mariners. I now that I live here
in Seattle, the Mariners, I'm adopting them. They are becoming
my team and more and more whenever they play a
team from Detroit, I find that Detroit fandom waning a
(01:01:34):
little bit.
Speaker 1 (01:01:35):
Now the Lions another story.
Speaker 5 (01:01:37):
We're not with the Lions, Okay, will believe the Lions out.
Speaker 1 (01:01:40):
Yeah, we Lions out of it. But you know, there
definitely is a bit of me that when the Mariners one,
I was.
Speaker 3 (01:01:46):
Like, all right, we are still alive. And I felt
like a wee as opposed to a day So it
felt pretty good.
Speaker 4 (01:01:53):
How incredible was that game, though, Friday? How incredible was
I had.
Speaker 3 (01:01:57):
Never been to a playoff baseball game before? So number
one I got the cross that off the bucket list,
and then number two to see it the way that
it ended, and hanging on every pitch and you know,
feeling the polls of of of all the fans around me.
I was out in the bleachers one ninety three, and
it was it was so much fun to be in
(01:02:18):
that atmosphere.
Speaker 9 (01:02:19):
It was loud.
Speaker 1 (01:02:19):
My ears are still ringing from that day. I'm kind
of mad.
Speaker 3 (01:02:23):
The beer sales got cut off in the seventh so
I had to go pretty much a whole game without
a beer, which I didn't.
Speaker 1 (01:02:28):
Like that very much.
Speaker 5 (01:02:29):
But I don't even think about that.
Speaker 1 (01:02:30):
I don't think about that. Yeah, the day, but no,
it was.
Speaker 2 (01:02:34):
It was a fucking It was a fun atmosphere.
Speaker 4 (01:02:37):
Evert fits you was with us the voice of your
Seattle Cracking, And I just want to say before we
start diving into cracking, Bucky and I went to Detroit
for the first time, and we are not making this up. Fact,
the nicest people in any city in America, and it's
not even close. We were stunned by it, Everett. We
were stunned how nice everyone was.
Speaker 5 (01:02:59):
It was incredible.
Speaker 2 (01:03:02):
Listen.
Speaker 3 (01:03:02):
Many it's called Midwestern nice for a reason, and everyone
thinks that Minnesota owns the crown, but anywhere in the
Midwest when someone asked, Hey, how you doing, they genuinely
want to have a ten to fifteen minute conversation on.
Speaker 1 (01:03:17):
How you're doing, how's your mom, how's your sister? Did
your dad surgery go?
Speaker 2 (01:03:20):
Okay?
Speaker 1 (01:03:21):
Weren't you up for a job last week? How did
that go? We genuinely care how you're feeling. So yeah, man,
Detroit is a great city. Don't let the news fool you. Great,
it's a great town.
Speaker 2 (01:03:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:03:31):
I'm from the midst too, and I'm telling you that
people from my hometown are a holes compared to those
from your hometown.
Speaker 2 (01:03:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (01:03:36):
I thought for the longest time like that you were
in an anomaly, right that, how is this guy so nice?
Everybody's in Detroit? And now I just realized you're just
running the mill Detroit.
Speaker 5 (01:03:47):
Yeah, yeah, so it was wonderful.
Speaker 2 (01:03:49):
It was wonderful.
Speaker 5 (01:03:51):
All right.
Speaker 4 (01:03:52):
Well, let's talk about our hockey teams too, and oh
start this. Yeah, they're off to just a fabulous start
here under Lanelane.
Speaker 3 (01:04:01):
They are, and I think for a large part of
that is just due to the style of play and
at Lane is trying to establish here and you've got
players buying in and I mean outside of that first
period against against Anaheim on Thursday, you're seeing a very structured,
disciplined style of game. Yeah, they only scored the three
(01:04:22):
goals against Anaheim, and you know, you win two to
one in overtime to Vegas.
Speaker 1 (01:04:26):
For the offense probably maybe isn't where a lot of
folks would like.
Speaker 3 (01:04:30):
But defensively, structurally, this is a different team from what
we've seen in the past couple of years. And I've
talked to a number of players, both on the defensive
side and forwards, and they they love this style of play.
Speaker 1 (01:04:43):
They like the idea, you know, of that grinding style
that really just.
Speaker 3 (01:04:49):
Sets them up for success. Because we've talked a lot
about this team. There isn't that star power. There isn't
that you know, big bonafide superstar. But what you have
is you twenty different role players, depth players, guys who
can work hard and when they're playing that style. As
we've seen, it's only been two games, so I understand
(01:05:11):
it's a very small sample size, but we've seen that
it has worked for them. And you know, I looked
at Al a couple of times in that Anaheim Gavid
in the Vegas game and I said, if this is
how they're going to play all year long, and if
they can find a way to maybe push that goals
for to closer to three and play three to one
(01:05:32):
games or three two games, I like this team's chance
is moving forward.
Speaker 7 (01:05:37):
You use the word discipline there, and I mean I
think discipline is something that is is paramount to having
a good team period across the board. Dive into that
more like, what is it that Lambert's got them doing
or is it the leaders that have them out there
playing a discipline style hockey?
Speaker 1 (01:05:54):
So I'll give you an example.
Speaker 3 (01:05:56):
There were a couple of There were a couple of
times in the Anaheim and Vegas games where you could
tell that Seattle was at the end of a shift
and you know, maybe you've got three on two coming
through the neutral zone. You have a lane down the
side and you can easily rush into the zone, try
to get a couple of shots off and set your
(01:06:17):
offense up.
Speaker 1 (01:06:18):
But when you're at the end of a shift, your
legs are burning, you're tired.
Speaker 3 (01:06:22):
Then you're gonna have to get back and that is
when you fall into problems where you can't skate as
well as you would like to do and now the
other team's got numbers going back the other way, and
you put your goalie in a that situation. Last couple
of games, the Kraken have been in that situation and
rather than just crash the zone, they get to the
red line, they dumped the puck in and they turn
(01:06:42):
off for a line change. And there were a lot
of times when you could see a three on two
rush developing and they said, nope, we know where we are.
We'll dump the puck in and then we're gonna live
to fight another day. We saw that a little bit
in the preseason. I saw that a lot in the
last couple of games. So that's that discipline that I
I was talking about. Defensively, a lot of defensemen have
(01:07:03):
been trying to join in the rush. We've seen it
the first four years a lot.
Speaker 1 (01:07:07):
This is a very active decorps when.
Speaker 3 (01:07:10):
It comes to helping out, you know, in terms of
generating chances offensively. But the last couple of games you
started to see these guys stay at home a little
bit more, play a bit more responsibly, not worry so much.
You don't have you know, montour or done below the
tops of the circles on the fore check as much
or trying to keep tucks in the corner.
Speaker 1 (01:07:30):
That's what I mean about discipline. It's about everyone.
Speaker 3 (01:07:34):
Knowing your role, staying in your particular role and letting
the play develop and not trying to force it in
our last minute.
Speaker 4 (01:07:42):
Give me a thumbnail sketch of this Montreal team that
we start our road season with tonight.
Speaker 3 (01:07:49):
Well, this isn't this isn't your your father's Montreal Canadians
the last you know, five ten years. I think you know,
they have a very good young cores and they just
wrapped up Lane Hudson, who was their star defenseman. They've
just wrapped him up for nine years. They've signed their
top eight young players through at least twenty thirty three,
(01:08:12):
so they're setting up to be, you know, a pretty
strong team moving forward.
Speaker 1 (01:08:16):
Their problems are going to be in goal.
Speaker 3 (01:08:18):
You know, Sam Montembeau and Jacob bibsh are good goalies,
but they don't have that elite number one goalie. And
the Can put up eight goals against this team in
this building last year, almost about a year ago this
time last year. So they're a good young team kind
of in the similar vein as Anaheim, but a little
bit more experience, and I think for Seattle this is
(01:08:39):
gonna be a game where they're gonna need that discipline
structure because they do have a lot of young skill
and speed on their lineup.
Speaker 4 (01:08:46):
All right, well, we will be listening for sure tonight
for a'clock Everett and al on the call from Montreal,
one of the true great organizations in all of the
National Hockey League.
Speaker 5 (01:08:59):
All right, man, we will talk to you soon. How
long are you guys on the road?
Speaker 3 (01:09:03):
For goodness sake, We're we're on the road until next
Thursday night, so the entire ALCS will be over by
the We could be in the World Series by the
time we get back.
Speaker 1 (01:09:13):
Like that's how long this road trip is.
Speaker 5 (01:09:15):
If there is a chance, you're in Toronto right for
game six, so.
Speaker 3 (01:09:19):
Game five will be Friday, if we have a day
off on Friday, so game five if it gets to
a game five, which at this rate and you don't know,
but if there is a Game five, it'll be on Friday.
I've got my Mariners jersey and my hoodie ready to
go out to the bar, to the restaurant here in
in Toronto, so hopefully watch the Mariners fly the Pennant.
Speaker 5 (01:09:41):
All right, all right, man, well have some fun on
the road. We'll talk to you real soon.
Speaker 1 (01:09:47):
All right, fella's stick here.
Speaker 5 (01:09:48):
Everett fits you.
Speaker 4 (01:09:49):
First road trip of the season, you know, Alan Everet'll
get a little wacky. Oh yeah, trip of the season,
especially dancing around cool cities like Montreal and Toronto and
the whatnot.
Speaker 5 (01:10:00):
Just throwing loonies and tunies all over the pres.
Speaker 8 (01:10:02):
Probably they get rain loonies and tunies.
Speaker 5 (01:10:05):
Yeah, be careful with that.
Speaker 4 (01:10:06):
It hurt YEA four o'clock start time tonight. Kraken and
Canadians getting it started as seattleoks to move to three
and zero on the year. All right, coming up next
on our radio program, the ABC's of the M's Sports
Radio ninety three point three kJ r FM, each time to.
Speaker 5 (01:10:24):
Talk all things college football.
Speaker 12 (01:10:26):
It's just like the menu at Taco Time. You just
can't get enough.
Speaker 6 (01:10:29):
You just can't get This is our weekly visit with
Rick Newheisel, brought to you buy Taco Time, not.
Speaker 12 (01:10:35):
Those new Heidels. Used to be a moniker of mine.
Speaker 15 (01:10:38):
I mean, just sell you.
Speaker 6 (01:10:39):
Out now on your home for college football Saturdays. Here's
Natcho's new Heidel on Sports Radio ninety three point three
kJ R FM.
Speaker 12 (01:10:48):
This is college football, and I want you to get
it all over yourself.
Speaker 5 (01:10:55):
By the way, I saw how you spread some history
and some.
Speaker 4 (01:10:58):
Love and the Apple Cup there on CBS. So I
hope you're spreading that same Mariner thing right now on
the set. I hope Aaron Taylor's getting an ear full
of Mariner baseball talk from you.
Speaker 12 (01:11:10):
I am just amazed at the heat index of the
Seattle sports scene. I mean, the Seahawks are on fire,
the Dogs are on fire, the Mariners are going to
go to the World Series. It's too good to be true.
Speaker 4 (01:11:26):
We're not going to pinch ourselves. We're just going to
keep riding it.
Speaker 12 (01:11:29):
So I have to expected you guys to be in
Toronto today, but as you were in Detroit the last
time I spoke, but ride this thing, ride it and
find a way to capture the crown.
Speaker 2 (01:11:43):
What a thrill that would be.
Speaker 4 (01:11:44):
I'd be amazing, all right, So you're going to have
to explain something to me, because how in the world
has Jerry Neuheisel been the story of the week in
college football two weeks in a row. I mean, coach,
I mean putting aside obviously, the family connection, the obvious
family can I've never seen a turnaround like this for
a football team in the middle of the year ever,
(01:12:05):
in the history of watching college football. What on earth
has your son du to none there in UCLA to
turn this thing around that there.
Speaker 12 (01:12:15):
Listen, it's easy to sit there and say, oh, it's
all about Jerry. You got to give credit to Tim Skipper,
the head coach, who all of a sudden tried to
make it's fun again. You got to give credit to
Kevin Coyle, who literally two weeks ago was an analyst
at Syracuse. He comes in because he was with Tim
(01:12:36):
a year ago at Fresno. They come in and concoct
a defense that's working. And then Jerry, who'd been there
for six years, and if you think about it, he'd
coached the quarterbacks when he first got there. Then he
coached the wide receiver, so all the wide receivers that
are on the roster this year are all kids that
Jerry recruited. And then he's had the tight end room
(01:12:58):
this year, so he knows all the tight end so
he knows all these guys and he now he's getting
to coach Nico and coach some confidence back in Niko,
and all of a sudden it's starting to take hold.
There's some good players, they just were not necessarily organized.
Speaker 2 (01:13:15):
In a way that they needed to be.
Speaker 12 (01:13:16):
And so you put all these guys working together, and
then you add that extra little thing called belief, and
something special can happen, and it's wonder it all take place.
Now it's going to get harder. It's Maryland this week,
and then they go on the road to a school
called Indiana. I don't know if you're familiar, but the
Hoosiers are playing big time college football.
Speaker 5 (01:13:39):
Well, let's talk about Indiana. A huge win.
Speaker 4 (01:13:41):
I mean, I mean Kurt Signetti was National Coach of
the Year last year. You don't normally win that award
two years in a row because your program can't possibly
go to another extraordinary level. But he might pull this
thing off. He might be National coach of the year
back to back years of what we're seeing out of
the real I had a front.
Speaker 12 (01:14:02):
Row seat for the Count's job this last weekend there
in Eugene, and I call him to Count because he's
got the same suntan as Dracula. It is a remarkable
job of coaching, and yet it's just fundamental football. He
is the master of fundamental football. The defense did a
great job of keeping Oregon inside their edges. They set
(01:14:25):
edges and made spilled to their help, so there was
no real big plays save the one kind of confusion
in the back end that Dante more hit the touchdown
pass early. That was the one explosive play.
Speaker 5 (01:14:38):
After that, they just.
Speaker 12 (01:14:39):
Made him go ten eleven, twelve play drives. And usually
if you do that over the course of a game,
the offense will make a mistake and put themselves behind
the sticks and it's not sustainable. And that is exactly
what took place. And add to that Fernando Mendoza on
the offensive side, who has a howitzer for a thrown
arm and was able to taked all the outs that
(01:15:01):
were thrown and back shoulder throws that were available to him,
and he did it masterfully. So no accident.
Speaker 2 (01:15:08):
Eugene.
Speaker 12 (01:15:08):
That was a really good football team on the road
getting that win, and it was the first time in
the history of Indiana football, who right now is the
losingest team in the history of the NCAA, more losses
than any other team. They that's their first win over
a top five team on the road. They had only
one other under their belt that was in nineteen sixty seven,
(01:15:29):
a home win against Purdue.
Speaker 5 (01:15:32):
Unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (01:15:33):
And before we get to the Huskies, I do want
to ask about one other coaching question for you, because, man,
when this season started, Penn State ranks number two in
the country. A lot of people believing that this was
the year if they're going to get it done, They're
going to get it done this year. They're going to
get over that hurdle and they're going to be the
Ohio State or the Michigan and have a shot at
(01:15:53):
the national championship. For US to not even be halfway
through the college football season and James Franklin out of
a job, has there been anything more surprising this year
in college football than that?
Speaker 12 (01:16:05):
No, that's a free fall. That is an absolute freefall.
Tom Petty song is blaring in my ears right now.
I am sitting here thinking about what I said before
the season started about if not now, when given all
the people that the pieces that were coming back, Allen
and Singleton in the backfield, Aller is the quarterback. They
(01:16:26):
went and spent money to get Paynia and Hudson wide
receivers from sc and Syracuse respectively. They had all the
pieces and all the coaches were back. As a matter
of fact, they went and got the defending national champion
defensive coordinator, the first three million dollar assistant coach in Knowles,
to come and be the architect of the defense. There
(01:16:48):
was no reason for this, and they had the softest
of non conference schedules, but it went out like the
air out of a balloon. After that loss to Oregon
in double overtime, they go out and UCLA hands it
to him. It wasn't an accident. And then they get
beat by Northwestern, and I'm hearing that Adidas, who had
(01:17:08):
spent incredible amounts of money to take that school away
from Nike, we're part of the deal and they can't
watch this investment go downhill. So I think they put
up some money to handle the buyout and we're moving
on at Penn State, which means it's the most attractive
job out there. It's an amazing turn of events.
Speaker 5 (01:17:29):
Wow, yeah, without a doubt.
Speaker 7 (01:17:31):
Well, another amazing turn of events was you dub and
the way they came roaring back after kind of falling
behind a little bit this weekend against Rutgers. So, I mean,
how impressed with Demon Williams and just the Washington team
now sitting at five and one.
Speaker 12 (01:17:46):
You guys remember me telling you after I went to
practice that I thought Demon Williams was a talented a
guys I've seen in recent memory. I watched him now.
Obviously he can run. He's a gifted little athlete that
can make people miss. And the Buckeyes were the best
at basically caging him and keeping him in the pocket
(01:18:06):
right because they have the wherewithal to do that. When
he gets loose, he's a menace, and he was a
menace to the Scarlet Knights the other night, to the
tune of one hundred and thirty six yards on the
ground ten plus per But he's also a gifted passer,
and that's what caught my attention when I was at practice.
(01:18:27):
I mean, the guy he can throw it from a
thousand of He would be the shortstop on a baseball team.
And he can go in the hole and throw the
strike to throw you out at first. And he can
go up the middle and then turn his body and
contort it to make the play at first as well,
and the ball's going to spend beautifully. That's who he
is and that's no accident that he put four hundred
yards up. Now, will it be harder against Michigan, Yes,
(01:18:52):
But when you start with we can't let him run,
you can imagine what else is available to Jed when
he's architecting and off. He is a absolute weapon and
then some And don't count him out of this Heisman race.
If the Huskies continue to.
Speaker 4 (01:19:07):
Be hot, well, nobody's running away with it, that's for sure.
And that was very Heismany Friday night.
Speaker 12 (01:19:13):
Very Heismany. I was a part of a quarterback performance
when Marcus ran for two hundred and three for three hundred,
this was every bit as entertaining and exceptional.
Speaker 4 (01:19:25):
All Right, So Michigan, I mean, they don't look like
world beaters this year, but they are at home and
this is the stiffest challenge other than Ohio State that
this team's faced this year. They didn't get the Buckeyes,
they didn't get that done at home. I mean, what
kind of a chance do you give the dogs Saturday
in the Big House.
Speaker 12 (01:19:47):
Well, I think the fact that Jed's coach there will
help because he'll kind of be able to talk to
the team about the mystique of the Big House.
Speaker 2 (01:19:55):
And all of that.
Speaker 12 (01:19:57):
You know, it's not a loud place, because it's a
bowl in the place, you're going to be able to hear.
This is all going to come down to the wink
Martindale able to craft the same kind of plan that
Patricia did and.
Speaker 2 (01:20:12):
Keep Demon's legs at bay.
Speaker 12 (01:20:14):
And if that be the case, then it's all going
to come down to third down conversions. Because if the
Huskies can play on third down and play efficiently on
third down, they're better than Michigan on offense. That's a fact.
Michigan runs the ball. Sc was able to corral them
in the running game. That hadn't been the case with
the Trojans in the Lincoln Riley era that they were
(01:20:37):
able to and SC also ran for over two hundred
yards out rushed Michigan. And if Washington can do that
with both Demon and Joana Coleman, they just sets up
really well for the Dogs. I will not be shocked
with a I know they are underdog, but I will
not be shocked with the Husky victory.
Speaker 7 (01:20:57):
Well, yeah, I mean Ruggers is not the same running
team that they typically were last year. You mentioned it
last week with the.
Speaker 12 (01:21:05):
Yeah, they lost the non guy. Yeah, they kind of
leaning on calliate manis they threw the ball fifty times
in this game?
Speaker 2 (01:21:11):
Yeah, the Dogs.
Speaker 5 (01:21:12):
Yeah, And yet the Dogs to some degree stiffened up.
Speaker 7 (01:21:16):
I mean, they still ended up getting a little over
one hundred yards, but it was not one of those
college running performances where you got Rayan over. So do
you feel like there's enough seeing in the pants of
this d line to slow down the Justice Haynes kid
from Michigan.
Speaker 12 (01:21:31):
To me, that's always the answer when they take one
on the chin at Michigan is we've got to run
the ball. And that was their key when they went
to Nebraska and won. They had big runs and Justice
Haynes is a heck of a player. They've got a
couple of you know, Robbins to his batman. But the
bottom line is this is going to be the key,
(01:21:53):
and Jed will know this. They have to stop the
running game. And I would suspect if they're starting to,
you know, meet loggerheads in the running game, that Bryce Underwood,
their quarterback, will also incorporate its legs and it'll be
interesting if they add more of that to the equation.
When the Huskies get to town.
Speaker 4 (01:22:14):
Jerry New Eiel's dad is with us here on Chucking
Buck in the Morning. His segment brought to you by
Taco Time every single week here on the Chucking Buck
Radio program. How about the Kougs. By the way, got
to give a little bit of love to the Kougs.
They scared the crud out of Ole Miss on Saturday.
They almost sent Lane Kiffin's dream season a reeling Saturday.
Speaker 12 (01:22:38):
That was an awesome performance by Jimmy Rodgers Bunch. You know,
I think the Cougar program got deilt bad cards in
the current lot that they're in, but the way they're
fighting is is awesome. I think that ech House kid,
the quarterback Zebbi ech Houses Bunda watch and I wish
it would have happened. But they only got close. We know,
(01:23:01):
close doesn't count nless you're playing hand grenades or horseshoes.
But the bottom line is that that was a hell
of an effort, hell of an effort way to go
cod Well.
Speaker 4 (01:23:11):
It was a classic trap game scenario that almost caught
All Miss. Because they're looking forward to Georgia the following week,
So how do they bounce back from that near loss
to actually give an a effort that they'll require to
beat the Bulldogs.
Speaker 12 (01:23:28):
You know, they're an underdog at Georgia, but I've not
seen Georgia more vulnerable than they are this year. And
this is a product of the transfer portal and the resources.
You know, it used to be that Kirby learned from
Nick Saban, and Nick Saban would stockpil defensive line talent,
just stockpilot. I went to a practice and saw thirteen guys,
(01:23:48):
and I said to the guy next to me, if
I had two of them, I'd still be coaching just
two of those guys. And that's way Georgia was when
they won those back to back titles. Now those guys
are taking you know, lucrative deals to go elsewhere, and
they don't have the same kind of numbers, So this
is more of a fair fight. I think Ole Miss
beating Georgia in Oxford last year was not an accident.
(01:24:12):
So I think this is a last possession type of game.
And this Trinidad Chambliss, the kid that was at Farris
State last year as a Division two quarterback, is a
college football story and then some. So I got to
cut my fingers crossed that Kippen and company get it
done in Athens.
Speaker 4 (01:24:30):
Well Vegas for whatever reason, started off with an opening
line of Alabama destroying Tennessee by like two touchdowns. I
think Caitlin de Bores righted the ship to some degree,
but he's not operating. Nick Saban's Alabama Crimson tied just yet.
I don't know if they demolish many opponents, especially of
the eleventh ranked team in the country. Any idea why
(01:24:53):
that was such a lopsided, you know, opening line.
Speaker 12 (01:24:57):
I don't have any idea unless there's some injuries that
I'm not aware of. The bottom line here is Ty Simpson,
the Alabama quarterback, is really good, really playing well. And
we all know how good that duo of de Boor
and grub are in terms of teaching and giving them
(01:25:17):
some concepts that are fail safe. They've done a nice job.
Speaker 2 (01:25:22):
So Simpson is.
Speaker 12 (01:25:22):
Having fun, and they've got three really good receivers, the
Horton kid that they got from Miami, along with Ryan Williams,
who was this freshman sensation, and then a Husky fans
will remember Jeremy Bernard. Those three guys are all having
a great year. So Alabama is ready to play, but
they're not fantastic defensively. And so what Alabama is now
(01:25:44):
doing is they're adding time of possession to the equation.
Both the last two wins over Vanderbilt and then last
week against Missouri were thirty seven minutes. That's a weapon.
So Tennessee is going to have to be able to
run the ball. Most teams have been able to do
that against Alabama. If Tennessee can run the ball, this Aguilar,
the kid that came from Ucla when Nico came to
(01:26:07):
came from Tennessee to Ucla. He ended up going to Tennessee.
He's been terrific and they got this receiver. I think
he's six' Five Chris. Brazzle that is a weapon in
N SO i think that game's a fourth quarter game
just because it almost always, is especially Since hypel's been
mining the store there In.
Speaker 4 (01:26:27):
Knoxville utah has destroyed every team they face Except Texas,
tech who destroyed.
Speaker 5 (01:26:31):
Them so how good Is Texas?
Speaker 4 (01:26:33):
Tech BUT i really believe in This utah, team and
yet they're FACING theyu in The Holy.
Speaker 5 (01:26:38):
War who wins?
Speaker 12 (01:26:39):
It, well both of them have running. QUARTERBACKS i think
it's going to be the most entertaining game of the.
Weekend Because Bear bachmeier this freshman who wears number forty
seven at quarterback has been a blast to. Watch and this,
Kid Devin, dampier who was a thousand yard rusher as
well as a accomplished passer For New. Mexico they have
(01:27:01):
borrowed this new wave of the future where you go
get the coach and the quarterback to come to your.
Place so both those guys came From New, Mexico Jason
beck And, dampier and they're having great. Success the one,
loss as you, mentioned THE tech was When dampier was
a little nicked. Up so if he's running, AROUND i
think we're in for a. Treat i'm going to Take
utah on the, game BUT i wouldn't be surprised with any.
Speaker 4 (01:27:24):
Outcome All, Right, WELL i think every right thinking person
hates US sc And Notre.
Speaker 2 (01:27:31):
Dame, right.
Speaker 4 (01:27:34):
But it's a RIVALRY i don't ever want to see go, anywhere,
Coach so they're actually talking about breaking this thing.
Speaker 5 (01:27:41):
Up we might have to savor these.
Speaker 4 (01:27:43):
MATCHUPS i, mean it's not the time of the year
it's supposed to be, at but it's still one of
our great.
Speaker 5 (01:27:49):
Rivalries who wins, It.
Speaker 12 (01:27:52):
I'm going to go with The trojans the fact that
they ran the ball for over two hundred yards Against
michigan says they can go up against the big boys.
Up miami ran the ball effectively Against Notre dame in
that opening. Game they Just Notre dame just lost their.
Center that'll be a blow to. Them i'm going to
take The, trojans assuming that they can be stout against
(01:28:14):
the run and. Not let you know That Notre dame
offense just kind of dominate the. Thing they've got a
couple of really dynamic running. Backs But i'm going to
take The. Trojans This Makhai, lemon by the, way if
you've not watched, them he's the receiver pres he leads
the big. Ten He's Pooka nakoupa the.
Speaker 2 (01:28:30):
Second he's.
Speaker 5 (01:28:31):
Unbelievable, yeah he's really fun to.
Speaker 4 (01:28:33):
Watch all, Right, well it's gonna be another Great. Saturday
do you got A Taco Time pick of the week
or have we already covered?
Speaker 12 (01:28:39):
IT i think we covered.
Speaker 2 (01:28:41):
It i'm taking The.
Speaker 12 (01:28:41):
Trojans i'll lay the seven and a half or eight
and give me A lincoln And company and see if
we can't do some damages out then all, right.
Speaker 4 (01:28:51):
Great, Stuff thank, you. Sir we appreciate, it enjoy it,
all and we'll talk again next.
Speaker 2 (01:28:55):

here's how it. Works, Ryan i'm gonna go over a
few Different mariner. Scenarios, here meet a few. Statements then
you will give an. OPINION i will give an. Opinion
we don't have to disagree on. It and whenever the
Old judge is hurt, enough gavel gavel gas slams the,
gavel he weighs, in and whatever he says.
Speaker 5 (01:31:37):
Goes that's the way it.
Speaker 17 (01:31:38):
Works and love A, Bucky, bucky you look great. Today
by the, way did you get some extra? Sleep you
look really well. RESTED i appreciate. THAT i appreciate.
Speaker 7 (01:31:46):
That yeah you. Will that will go a long ways
in my. Courtroom, healey smart.
Speaker 5 (01:31:52):
Man all, Right so here we. Go number.
Speaker 4 (01:31:55):
One Hooray polanco as the game WINNING rbi in three
state playoff, games but analytics community dismisses the notion of
a skill for clutch.
Speaker 5 (01:32:04):
Hitting So ryan is or hey clutch or?
Speaker 17 (01:32:07):
Not, yeah one hundred percent, This thank, goodness analytics left
something to be determined by the naked, eye because OTHERWISE
us baseball players would have nothing left to do with the.
Computers and THEN i can't say that, word but the
computers would take over all of our jobs and responsibilities
in this.
Speaker 5 (01:32:22):
Space but, yeah he's.
Speaker 17 (01:32:23):
Clutch he's showcasing, it he's he's commanding strikes, one he's
executing when the moment's the.
Speaker 4 (01:32:27):
Biggest all, RIGHT i just want to get you guys
fired up BECAUSE i agree with, You But i'm gonna say.
Speaker 5 (01:32:33):
No analytics shut then on gavel gal With, gable shut your.
Speaker 7 (01:32:37):
Mouth you do not preface some stupid comment like that like,
Oh i'm just gonna get the judge and heally pissed. Off,
no do that, again you'll be held in. Contempt it's
without a doubt that there's a clutch. FACTOR i don't
even understand how you take that stat out of the whole.
Thing it's because you can't quantify, it because not everybody
gets his equal. AMOUNT i don't care if you get
(01:32:58):
the equal. Amount if you're hitting, four that's because your
coach thinks you're good at driving guys. In if you're hitting, ninth,
yeah can you turn the line up?
Speaker 4 (01:33:06):
Over?
Speaker 5 (01:33:06):
Please can you have a tough Ab that's where you're.
Speaker 7 (01:33:08):
At and luckily we have war Eight polunco because he
is proving that he is about as clutch as you can.
Speaker 4 (01:33:13):
Get oh that's pretty. Determined gavel slam right, there you
damn right all?
Speaker 5 (01:33:17):
Right second, One.
Speaker 4 (01:33:18):
Ryan at this, Point Brian wu just shouldn't start a
game in the.
Speaker 17 (01:33:22):
Series how dare you say that out? Loud Brian wu
is The. Savior he will. Start if it's not this,
series it'll be game one of The World. Series Brian
wu is a. Saint and you don't say anything other.
Argument i'm gonna say.
Speaker 4 (01:33:36):
THIS i, mean if they give the ball To Bryce
miller On game, FIVE i don't think anybody could be
upset by. THAT i don't think that anybody should be
worried about. THAT i do, believe, though we've got to
Test brian at some point before before you potentially reach
A World. Series AND i don't think we can beat
The dodgers Without brian wu starting and performing well in
(01:33:57):
a game or. Two So i'm gonna SAY i need
to see him Stow Cavel. CAVELL i want to see
him start definitely before The World. Series But i'm not
worried about him. Starting it's not a matter Of, Okay
i'm if he's ready to come. Back i'm Bumping Bryce.
Speaker 7 (01:34:12):
Miller at this, point you're STILL i mean you somewhat
have recovered from the fifteen inning game in the long.
FIVE i mean you basically are back to where everybody's
gonna have their. Rest BUT i don't think there's anything
wrong with just running one guy out there after. Another
if this thing goes to game, FIVE i think he's
going to be ready to rock and. Roll he threw
a bullpen or some some live abs to some guys.
YESTERDAY i think he's gonna be ready to rock and
(01:34:34):
roll On. Friday AND i think they run him out
there On. Friday that's gonna be a nice situation where
you're gonna get to see and it's not necessarily you're
running him out there in a game seven necessarily where
you're not one hundred percent. Sure now he's going to
react after having missing some time can't do.
Speaker 5 (01:34:48):
That can't do, that all?
Speaker 17 (01:34:50):
Right next, ONE i would love to see him open
with like a two winning. Start let him go through
his normal routine and then Have Bryce miller piggyback off of,
him LIKE i would love to See. Brian we'll get
that opportunity depending on the series shaken.
Speaker 2 (01:35:00):
OUT i like. THAT i like.
Speaker 5 (01:35:01):
That not a bad, idea. Ma'am you already had stated your, case,
sir judge had already made his.
Speaker 17 (01:35:07):
Declaration is, Okay i'll take my slap on the hand he's,
dead just to make a great.
Speaker 5 (01:35:13):
Point, yeah it was a great, point by the, way all.
Right next.
Speaker 4 (01:35:17):
ONE i don't understand all the. Surprise The Blue jays
aren't better than The mariners at.
Speaker 5 (01:35:22):
Anything disagree with.
Speaker 17 (01:35:26):
That they strike out a heck of a lot less
than our, Guys But i'm not surprised because these are
two high quality. Teams WHAT i am surprised, about, though
is how much emotion went into The Blue Jays yankee.
Series AND i feel like there was almost a massive
celebration of The yankees lose and everything that was publicized
in the, media that they didn't have that same undertone
of tenacity and just eagerness to want to embarrass The.
(01:35:48):
Mariners The mariners almost came in here as underdogs because
yes they're the lower ranked, seed but everyone anticipated they're
going to be, exhausted their bullpens, dead they used three starting.
Pitchers they were the, underdogs and they're now showcasing the
ability of doubt me, please because we got plenty of.
Speaker 14 (01:36:02):
Depth in this roster pitching and.
Speaker 4 (01:36:04):
HITTING i think they've got the better starting, rotation the better,
bullpen and the better. LINEUP i, MEAN i don't get
the surprise out. THERE i think The Blue jays might
have a better. Defense Hem andez can pick it at
short and Var show's a goal, glover And guerrero actually
has won A Gold, glove and Apparently Alejandro kirk's gonna
win the goal, glove so they can pick it there.
Defensively but, Man i'll take pitching and hitting over a
(01:36:27):
team having better defense than.
Speaker 5 (01:36:28):
Me, Gavel, gavel we're a better team than they.
Speaker 7 (01:36:32):
ARE i think there might be some things where they
can you, know the fact that they do put the
ball in play a little bit. MORE i think Without
Boba schett you most certainly have a better. Lineup even with,
HIM i think you got a better, lineup BUT i
don't think that's a. Contest the starting, rotation no doubt about.
It and when it comes down to, BULLPEN i think
that we're going to have a better. BULLPEN i do
(01:36:53):
think that there's this is not going to be a.
Walkover you're up to, Zero but that's a really good.
Team that's a team that finished with the most wins
of any in The American. LEAGUE i don't think you
can snooze on this squad because on any given, night
these guys can come out and beat.
Speaker 4 (01:37:05):
You, yeah, yeah that's, yeah there's no doubt final, one
at least for the old judge without need to see
any of. Them every member Of bucky's billiards team In
North bend has a way more athletic physique Than Alejandro.
Speaker 5 (01:37:21):
Kirk, hey let's go. MET i don't think. SO i
think is A gavel.
Speaker 7 (01:37:35):
Gabble you're saying you think there's somebody on my pool
league team that looks worse Than Alejandro.
Speaker 14 (01:37:40):
Kirk, yeah that boy can swing, it that boy can take.
Speaker 5 (01:37:44):
It i'm not saying he's not a good baseball. Player,
no he couldn't, be all, right Gabl gavel.
Speaker 7 (01:37:49):
Bailiff take that guy, away, handcuffed, shackles the whole.
Speaker 5 (01:37:53):
Deal BUT i need a spit mask on.
Speaker 7 (01:37:55):
Him he needs everything that we can possibly. Do, no,
there he is a am good baseball. Players there's a
reason we they call us baseball, players are not. Athletes
it's because of people like. Him you, said athletic. Build
an athlete is the way they, move not the way they.
Speaker 17 (01:38:10):
Look exo, Facto Alejandro kirk is a better athlete than
all your pool.
Speaker 5 (01:38:14):
Team, no, no, no, no no.
Speaker 14 (01:38:17):
No bring the whole building a lot. Longer kirks run
circles around.
Speaker 7 (01:38:21):
Him he is not running anywhere you see. Him he
can barely get out of a squad.
Speaker 14 (01:38:27):
A ladder. Drilled that boy's got some quick feet under
that big. Box because he.
Speaker 5 (01:38:31):
Can't pick his knees up higher than two. Inches you
need to.
Speaker 14 (01:38:34):
Running running really. Fast he just hits the ball over the.
Speaker 5 (01:38:36):
Fence if he had to run, hurdles you'd have to
go under.
Speaker 14 (01:38:39):
Them, Heally i'm not gonna argue that.
Speaker 2 (01:38:41):
Point there you.
Speaker 5 (01:38:41):
Go you want a.
Speaker 4 (01:38:42):
Point, Ah i'm glad That ryan met the old judge here.
Today fun all, Right so last thing for you before
we let you go and we'll talk to you. AGAIN
i Guess, Thursday, thursday what do you think game number?
Speaker 5 (01:38:58):
Three how you.
Speaker 4 (01:38:59):
Feeling about coming home two to oh and having them
in the crosshairs in the of playing At Team.
Speaker 17 (01:39:05):
OBILE i woke up this morning With Kobe bryant on
my mind of just like job's not. Finished AND i
hope that that mentality was taken From toronto back come To,
seattle of, wow that was. Unbelievable we just went two
up in their home, park and we gotta go back
to our home stands and it might be a little
bit trauma like the last time we were here to
play fifteen inning games and we can't do that. Again
like my legs are still. Sore SO i hope that the,
(01:39:26):
focus the mentality is like job's not. Finished Like bieber's
coming off of a really rough start from The, yankees
let's get after him early and getting their. Bullpen because
we've done, That we've been really. Successful George, kirby stay right.
There we have a arrested. Bullpen we have we have
a lot of depth that was able to get some work.
In If i'm The, Mariners i'm walking in laser, focus
knowing HOW i need to execute This game three and
(01:39:49):
get the crowd and the fans involved really really, early
because that's that's gonna steer in their.
Speaker 5 (01:39:54):
Favor great, stuff, man thanks for coming into the. Courtroom
that was.
Speaker 4 (01:39:56):
Fun thank you guys for having me all, Right ryan
