Speaker 1 (00:01):
Pour down at the ballgame for San Francisco six yards
to go for their own twenty four trailing by Sad.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
I've been at fifty.
Speaker 1 (00:08):
Five left forty in the gun shot gun staff four
man rush.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Five of the pattern Nity.
Speaker 1 (00:12):
Throws right time complete put Seahawks stand. Seattle is back
on top of the NFC West Seahawks thirteen forty nine
ers three for the first time in eleven years.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
Seattle is the number one seed.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Nice to Nate Gadder just gave the information there at
the end of that game on Saturday on Westwood One
and didn't just go, oh my gosh, I hope rock
Party is alive. Yeah, because that was just a crushing
hit at the end of a really difficult night for him,
and certainly the Seahawks put the pressure on him all
(00:55):
day long. Speaking of pressure, I don't feel like Sam
Darnold's succumb to it. I even had buddies nationally texting like,
why doesn't people get off Sam Donald's back. So this
is just something that's been going on nationally. Apparently I'm
supposed to believe that this, you know, redeems Sam Donald.
I just don't understand the criticism locally or nationally about
(01:17):
this guy. Four thousand passing yards this year leads you
to a fourteen and three record, second most points in
the National Football League. As a compliment to your defense,
I thought he was outstanding this year. I don't think
that he had to redeem himself Saturday night by winning
that football game. But I'm glad for a lot of
(01:37):
reasons that the Seahawks won Saturday Night, and certainly people
criticizing Sam Donald unnecessarily. At least we don't have to
deal with that for a couple of days. Oh, I
don't know.
Speaker 4 (01:49):
I mean, I think we should find something to bitch about,
don't you.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
I mean, yeah, we have to. I mean yeah, not
only score thirteen points, score thirteen points, Sam, I mean, Sam,
we could have got, like, I don't know what's better
than the number one seed.
Speaker 4 (02:03):
I mean what you or you.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
Willie walk a golden ticket? Yeah, gone right to the.
Speaker 4 (02:08):
You know you were only turn for twenty six with
no touchdowns. I mean sure you didn't have any picks,
but Jeami, you got to pick it up, man, I
mean fourteen and three. Sure, it's the best ever, it's
the most wins ever for the Seahawks, But you are
trash and yeah, I mean no, I don't understand how
he needs to redeem himself from anything. It's his first
(02:32):
year here and they just went out and won the
number one seed. So yes, hopefully those that do want
to jump on im, don't get me wrong. This room
for criticism. You don't want him to have the turnovers.
To me, it's not even the interceptions that happens sometimes,
especially when you're trying to make big time plays and
throws like he does. To me, it's just hold on
to the ball when you're getting sacked and then you
don't have anything to worry about.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
Twenty years old, come into the National Football League, a
lot of expectations, joined a terrible organization and got off
to a slow start and it took him a little
while to get going. But man, the last couple of
years he's been I won't say as good as anybody.
I think that there are two or three guys that
have had been better the last couple of years, but
there are many that listen not very long. The last
(03:14):
two seasons. Always done is throwing touchdowns, put up wins,
and here he is is the number one seed heading
into the NFL playoffs. Glad he is our quarterback.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
All right, here we are on a Monday morning. Good
to have you with us.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
Seven o'clock hour gets underway on a frost brewed corps
light Choose Chill Monday, counting you down to the playoffs
frankly because there is no Monday night football anymore. Well,
there is next week, but let's go ahead and take
a look at those frost brewed corps like choose Chill
headlines to get us started this hour. Seahawks, one of
(03:48):
the forty nine ers, thirteen to three Saturday night. They
have earned the one seed, home field advantage throughout the
NFC playoffs and a bye in the opening week, the
only team in the NFC to get that buy now
with a fourteen team field, and so they'll just sit
and watch some football this weekend. The NFL Wildcard schedule
is set. Carolina host the Rams at one thirty on Saturday,
(04:11):
Green Bay at Chicago at five o'clock Saturday evening. Sunday,
a triple edter Buffalo at Jacksonville gets it going at
ten am. San Francisco at Philadelphia is the afternoon game,
and the Chargers at the Patriots that will take place
Sunday night and then Monday. Yes, there will be a
Monday playoff game Houston at Pittsburgh, who defeated Baltimore in
(04:33):
one of the more thrilling fourth quarters you'll ever see
in your life watching football. The Steelers win, they survive.
Tyler Loop, the rookie kicker for the Ravens, misses a
forty four yard game winning field goal, and so it's
the Steelers that win the North and we'll be playing
next Monday at home against the Houston Texans. Today is
(04:53):
Black Monday in the National Football League. We've already seen
the Atlanta Falcons decide we're moving on from our headge,
coach and general manager, so Raheem Morris and Terry Fontineau
are out. Kevin Stefanski, two time Coach of the Year
in the NFL as a member of the Cleveland Browns,
is now out as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns.
He's not expected to be unemployed for long, and who
(05:16):
knows what else might happen on a Black Monday. People
are wondering what Miami's gonna do with Mike McDaniel, Tampa
is gonna do with Todd Bowles, and of course We've
all heard the rumors that Pete Carroll is going to
be out as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders
at some point today. The draft order is set. The
Raiders will have the number one selection in the draft
(05:38):
for this upcoming year. College football playoff resumes on Thursday,
with the final four one game on Thursday. One on Friday,
the transfer portals creating all sorts of crazy results. The
UDAB Huskies lost on the hardwood to Indiana last night
ninety to eighty. They will next play at Purdue Wednesday
at five point thirty. That's one of the top ranked
(06:00):
teams in the country and the crack in in action
tonight at Calgary to take on the Flames. They'll drop
the puck at six thirty. Let's talk Seahawks football with
our Seahawks insider, Greg Bell.
Speaker 5 (06:10):
With the Bell tolls, it must be seven o'clock and
time for twelfth Man News with Greg Bell. Brought to
you by Copola Diamond Collection Prosecco Chris Sparkly with bright
Fruit flavors to make every toast shine Game Day Bubbles
only with Copola Diamond Forsecco. Now with twelf Man News,
here's Greg Bell with Chuck and Budd.
Speaker 6 (06:32):
Good morning, Greg, Good morning, all right.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Good to have you with us. And look, you got
to cover the top team in the NFC this year
during the regular season.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
Did it feel like as you were covering this team
this year?
Speaker 2 (06:46):
How much of the season did you feel like you
were covering a great football team this year?
Speaker 6 (06:54):
Probably the latter half of it. And we talked about
it all season. They hadn't really done anything until they
beat the Rams at the forty nine ers and they've
done that here in the last three or four weeks.
And that's why they hired Mike McDonald, that's why they
signed Sam Donald, and those are validations that they needed
(07:16):
to be a division champion. I have home playoff games.
Everything that they set out to do, they had to
do those two things. And so honestly, after they beat
the Rams, I started thinking, Okay, this is what they've
taken that next step.
Speaker 4 (07:29):
Yeah, well, sorry about that. I turned my mic on.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
I'm with you.
Speaker 4 (07:33):
It does feel like they've evolved into that. And maybe
it wasn't right off the bat, but it does evolve
into it. I mean, what is the most impressive part
of what you've watched in this evolution from beginning to now.
Speaker 6 (07:46):
Well, Bucky without it out the defense, and this is
why they hired Mike McDonald. I was sitting there in
Levi's stadium on Saturday night. I felt from the beginning
of the game that they were going to win. The
way it was gone. I had not seen a Seahawks
defense be that dominant and that of affecting the entire game,
(08:07):
including how the offense played and how the Seahawks offensive approaches.
I hadn't seen that since Super Bowl forty eight against
the Dayton Manning in the Meadowlands. Never before then I've
seen the Seahawks defense perform like that and be that dominant.
And while everyone back here I'm sure was up in
(08:27):
arms will make McDonald was going for it on fourth
and goal with the four, and while he was the
Kuviak was running on second and goal for the eleven
and throwing on firstime. I could see then in the
moment what they were doing. McDonald said, even if we
don't get a touchdown here, we're going for it because
the forty nine ers are not driving the field in
(08:49):
our defense. They're just not, so we're gonna get a
pun out of it and get a second chance at
the same points, So why not get two chances to
score down here, And that's basically what he did. Let
me maximize our chances to get seven points twice. And
after the game he said exactly that. He said, we
had a very aggressive model to go for it there
(09:10):
because the forty nine Ers all season had been one
of the best field position teams in the league, and
a lot of their points are because of field position.
He said, we wanted to take advantage of that advantageous
plus field position that even if we didn't score, we
would get the ball back in a position to score
a game. And sure enough, three and out by the
forty nine Ers against their own goal line after that
(09:31):
stop on fourth down from the four, which, by the way,
they had Smith and Jigber wide open one on one
with Lenora. He didn't even Donald didn't even look that way.
That was a very curious choice. But three and out
by the defense and then the drive star because of
a fifteen yard penalty on the punt by the forty
nine ers. The drive star for the Salts was that
thirty five they were already in scoring range when they
(09:51):
got the ball back. So from the very first drive
of the game, McDonald played and dictated like he knew
his defense was going to do what it did. That's
why after the game I asked him about his game plan,
and the thirty eight year old head coach again showed
what a leader he was. He shot me down and said, no, no, no, no, no,
nothing to do with the game plan. Our guys played
(10:13):
an incredible game, how they tackled, how aggressive they were,
their attitude, their assimilation to what the forty nine ers
wanted to do. He just threw it all on the players.
I thought it was a really cool moment of a
glimpse of his leadership. And he drives those guys hard.
He's a very exacting guy, but he he gives him
(10:34):
the carrot quite a bit too. And including the postgame
scene of that locker room. I walked in there and
smoke was so thick I couldn't see across the locker room.
Who I was trying to talk to?
Speaker 2 (10:46):
Cigars? Yes, cigars, now that.
Speaker 6 (10:49):
Kind before Okay, oh yeah, what's cigars?
Speaker 2 (10:53):
Yea yeah. Greg mel is with US Seahawks Insider. Of course,
you can follow at g BEL Seattle come complete coverage
of the Shawks wins Saturday and their path into the
playoffs there at Thenewstribune dot com. So what do we
have to say here on this Monday morning, couple of
days to think about what went down on Saturday? About
(11:14):
an offense that doubled up the forty nine ers in yards,
didn't seem to be struggling really at any time during
the course of the evening, got its running game going
more than it has in seventeen games this year during
the regular season. That was our best night running the
football all year long, and yet still unfortunately caused a
(11:37):
you know, kind of a tense moment at the end.
McCaffrey doesn't fumble that throw and you don't get the interception,
and we got a down to the wire football game
against the team that you're dominating. So what do we
make of the offense just scoring thirteen points despite not
seemingly having a bad night at all Saturday?
Speaker 6 (11:58):
They think, So what this is? How we said, remember
in the summer, I told you that Jake bobb Will
pulled me aside and said, Greg, let me tell you
about this offense, how it's different. We're just going to
play offense so the defense can win games. And we
talked about this. He said, the running game is going
to play field position and put our defense in position
(12:19):
to win the game. He said, Now, as an offensive player,
we're kind of like, come on, we want to score
thirty points a game. He said, that's not how we're
designed to win. He said, there will be games we
need to win like that, but that's not how Mike
McDonald is recasting us. We're going to play enough offense
to win on defense. And that's exactly how they won
on Saturday night. Yes, without the fourth and the first
(12:41):
and goal, with the one malfunction in the first drive,
that's at least a twinty to nothing game in the
second quarter, so yes, And it wasn't so therefore it
was by on the scoreboards, still a close game. At
no time did anyone on the Seattle sideline and high
certainly didn't in the press box think that the forty
nine ers are going to score twice in that game.
And the game was dictated by the defense. And I
(13:02):
kept thinking of what Bobo told me during the game.
I was like, this is exactly what the players thought
they were gonna be all year. What's most encouraging for
the Seahawks is they are now playing exactly like they're
designed to play in Week eighteen is the culmination of
what they've been building for since April. And there are
gonna be times that that doesn't look great on offense,
(13:24):
and there's gonna be times that fans are going, yeah,
but their offense, so what. That's exactly how McDonald wants
to play back a team up to its own goal line,
with your offense doing enough to get it down there,
and then the defense is gonna let them go anywhere,
and we're just gonna keep getting punched and receiving the
ball in midfield, and eventually we're gonna score, and eventually
we're scoring enough points that the other team won't be
(13:46):
able to get close to us because our defense is
so good. I'm simplifying a lot, but that, in a
nutshell is the approach they built this team when Jody
Allen decided to hire Mike McDonald and go with John
Schneider's way of pursuing a new head coach and rebuilding
the defense. This is what they bought and it came
(14:07):
to eight week eighteen with the division title on the
line to fully realize what they bought into two years ago.
And it's somewhat remarkable. Only took them two years to
get to this point. I mean, come on, nobody expected
Mike McDonald to be the number one seed with a
buy and two home wins from the Super Bowl twenty
three months ago when they hired them, did we? Yet
(14:29):
they are exactly where they were in their Legion to
Boom days as far as number one seeds in the
Super Bowl. I get the there's always a glass half
empty look at almost any football game, and I get
the concern about, well, the offense did this and they
scored just thirteen points. This is how they were designed
to win. And McDonald will do it every single time.
(14:50):
He'll take thirteen to three all the way to the
Super Bowl.
Speaker 4 (14:53):
Oh yeah, I will win to win, And yeah they
were more dominant than what the number on the scoreboard says.
I mean, is this a game as big as it
was for the number one seed and to buy and
all that stuff. Is this a game that Sam Donald
gets put in his back pocket and hopefully hushes up
some of the haters?
Speaker 6 (15:11):
I would think, so, man, all he does is win
right now. And I keep thinking of my buddy Ken
Machat telling me when I was trying to decide who
to vote for the Cy Young Award. Wins an F
and loss is great, and nobody else but Tom Brady
has done what Sam Donald's done the last two regular seasons,
fourteen wins in each, and unlike Brady, Donald's done with
(15:34):
two different teams. Eventually, you're gonna have to start thinking,
this guy's doing his job, which is to win football games,
and he didn't turn the ball over, which to me
is the key between now and Santa Clair and the
super Bowl. Don't turn the ball over because your defense
is good enough to win a super Bowl. We've talked
about that for a month now, and that's exactly how
it played out. The steadiness, the pois, the players all
(15:59):
saying how reassuring it is that he's always the same.
It's yeah, I hear you, Bucky, because there're gonna be
people who still complain and say that he didn't do this,
he didn't do that, and why do you take a
second first and go yes, But you could look at
every quarterback in the history of the game, including Joe
Montana and the very best I've ever done it. They've
(16:21):
had plays and drives and turnovers. And I'm not apologizing
for him, But I do think that's the bottom line
of winning games. He's been pretty damn good at doing
that the last two years.
Speaker 2 (16:31):
I'll say. Greg Bell is with us our Seawks insider
from the News Tribune. All right, what's the update on
Charles Cross. I mean, you get you get a bye,
so you get two weeks to heal up everybody, Kobe Bryant,
all of them. I mean, man, if they can get
Crossing Brian back, this is about as healthy a playoff
team as you could possibly have, considering what these guys
(16:52):
go through for six months.
Speaker 6 (16:55):
Yeah, Tory Horton's probably gonna be the only guy recently
injured and the ones an injured reserve who doesn't have
a chance to play in the playoffs. Make MacDonald said
that right before the dust for Santa Clara and whatevery
day that was Friday. It looks like his season is over.
We'll play the next year. And honestly, on top of
the shin injury, what happened to Tory Horton was Rashid Shaheed.
(17:16):
They don't need Tory Horton because of the trade for
Rashid Shaheed right now, but Charles Cross McDonald said, we'll
play in the first playoff game. That's the expectation, I
should say. Anyway, he said that even before the forty
nine ers game. Now that they have to buy, that's
doubly true. And he on Friday McDonald said that George
Hollani he has a chance to come back the third
(17:38):
running back off of injured reserve as well. We'll see
how many of those guys come back. They have three elevations.
They can make one left over from the regular season
and two elevations or return to play from ir in
the playoffs as well. But to your point, yeah, in
that is one of the big big carrots of the
(18:00):
number one seed, the buye the rest playing one were
game to get to the super Bowl. But all the players,
even the ones who have been playing, are going to
benefit hugely from not having to play again and getting
the two weeks off.
Speaker 2 (18:13):
Then gave Cross some money.
Speaker 6 (18:15):
They did give some honey to him. Yeah, they've been
looking to give him some money for a while now.
And yeah, abe Lucas maybe next it's they have an
interesting decision with Riek Wollen and Kenneth Walker. The way
Charvona is playing and the way they've used Walker, I'm
not sure they're going to resign Kenneth Walker, and it
(18:35):
doesn't have to be on their terms for maybe a
one year deal. Kobe Bryant is someone that sliding under
the radar is also his contract ending, and I think
they're going to make an effort to resign him as well.
Speaker 4 (18:46):
I mean, is there anything that at this point John
Schneider hasn't done perfectly? I mean, yeah, you're coming into
an offseason, like you said, there's multiple people that you're
gonna have to re up.
Speaker 2 (18:55):
But it was really he was really pitting out during
the game. That was unt.
Speaker 6 (19:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (19:02):
Yeah, I mean he didn't have a perfect year, that's true.
That's true.
Speaker 4 (19:05):
So bad deodorant, but good personnel decisions. I mean, really,
is he the executive year? It's hard to think he
wouldn't be.
Speaker 6 (19:13):
Well. Yeah, I mean everything he's done, of all the
things he's done right the last couple of years, hiring
Mike McDonald and drafting at the top of the first
two rounds. I mean, look at Gray's Abel and nickymun
worry this year, Jackson Smith and Jiggler a couple of
years ago. When you're hid Witherspoon across four years ago
(19:35):
and ninth overall, when you hit with your first and
second round picks, you're on your way because you can
win at bottom basement bargain basement price at rookie Pasco.
When you miss in the first and second round, it
sets you back for four or five six, maybe a
year's beyond that. It's for the same reasons, because you've
(19:55):
invested the biggest chips. You have to win cheap the
wrong way, and the league is full of teams that
have done this that way. The emon worry. We've been
talking about him since they drafted him, but he looked
like I hesitated to say it, but I will say
(20:16):
it because they contared him to him the night to
draft him Sunday night, Saturday night. He looked like Cam Chancellor,
both in stature and play and how he tilted the
field and how he wiped out plays. He's just a
supernatural guy to what and now McDonald just maximizes every
(20:38):
one of his talents by moving him all over the field.
De Marcus Lawrence continues to play incredibly well. The fourth
downstop they had in the first half was because of
Lawrence a swim move. He looked like he was twenty
five years old instead of a twelve year veteran beating
the card off the snap and ruining the entire play.
I keep going on about the defense, but de Marcus
(21:01):
Lawrence was another John Schneider move right, eleven year veteran
in Dallas, and let's go sign this guy at thirty
two years old to a three year contract. And we
all said, what's he doing? Well, this is what he's doing.
He's got a veteran who knows the league and has
played in playoff games before, maybe their best player the
last month of the season. Yet Snyder gets a ton
(21:23):
of credit. Jody Allen chose his route over Carrol's and
look where it's gone.
Speaker 2 (21:29):
And congratulations to you as well. You don't have to
fly to Carolina again.
Speaker 6 (21:33):
So I will say we're not supposed to root in
a press box, but I will say the entire Seahawks
traveling beat what's rooting one way? Evan Biker said De
guard I had a funny now that Dugar has two
small kids, we have some self rooting interest.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
At times.
Speaker 6 (21:52):
If the Seahawks had lost that game, they were staring,
we were all staring at the real possibility of five
straight weeks on the road. They were going to probably
win the first two rounds at least certainly the first
round if they were the five seed, and then they'd
have a rematch with the Rams of forty nine ers
in the second round, and if they had won that,
they were looking at five straight game two in the
(22:13):
regular season at three to begin the playoffs. We were
all thinking that during.
Speaker 2 (22:16):
The game, well you got your wish. All right, Well
here we go and we look forward to a more
conversation tomorrow, sir, Thank you very much, appreciate you.
Speaker 6 (22:26):
All right, Happy Monday, Thank you, Greg bell.
Speaker 2 (22:28):
I see hawks inside of joining us right here nearly
every day at this time on Chuck and Buck. Thanks
to our friends at Coppola Diamond Prosecco kick Off or
Countdown Prosecco's always in the lineup. Copola Diamond Collection Prosecco
is crisp, bright and bursting with apple, citrus and peach.
Celebrate touchdowns on every holiday, toast with game Day Bubbles
(22:50):
only with Copoala Diamond Prosecco. Coming up next, it is
Black Monday. We'll give you the latest Chucking Buck Sports
Radio ninety three point three KJARFM. Monday. It's a glorious Monday.
For us. We've got Seahawks to discuss with our experts.
Hugh Mellon joins us at eight o'clock. Mike homeran at
nine o'clock. It's Monday morning. Quarterback coming your way right
(23:11):
here on Sports Radio ninety three point three k JRFM.
We got a football team. It finishes the regular season
fourteen and three. For goodness sake, the number one seed,
a buy in the first round, home field throughout the playoffs. Yes,
when you break it down, your two home wins away
from returning to the super Bowl. It's just fantastic. But
(23:33):
there is another side to this Monday. There's a reason
why they call it black Monday. A lot of head coaches,
personnel members across the National Football League find out that
their services are no longer required. And so we give
you the latest updates here on a black Monday. And
I think it starts with, well, let me let me
(23:53):
just give you the updates. We do know that Atlanta
has moved on Raheem Morris and the Falcons won their
life four games. Some might look at that as progress,
but I think Arthur Blank had decided long ago that
this was a disastrous season based compared to what we
thought we were going to be getting this year, and
(24:15):
so the Falcons owner is moving on from both general
manager Terry Fontineau and head coach Raheem Morris. Despite the
strong finish, at the bottom line with Arthur Blank is
he's ever seen him. There's not like a hair out
of place. He's got the best suits in the National
Football League. He's been at this a long time. He's
(24:36):
an old man at this stage, and and he's just
wants to win a Super Bowl. He hasn't been able
to finish this thing off. So I just don't think
he's got patience for mediocrity, and yet he just keeps
hiring these guys with fingers crossed that maybe they're the
right guy. I think it's just time that Arthur Blank
(24:58):
goes out there and gets something that's been more proven.
Spend whatever it takes Ardie. Might be that John Harball
is going to be available, might be that Mike Tomlin's
going to be available. Stay away from Bill Belichick.
Speaker 3 (25:11):
That didn't seem like a very good idea Arthur Blank.
Speaker 2 (25:14):
But I think he just needs a more proven commodity
because he keeps trying these coordinators and it just keeps blowing.
Speaker 4 (25:21):
Up in his face. Yeah, well, I mean I think
the you know, another guy that basically just got the
acts to Stefanski. I think he might be a great candidate, right,
I mean, you've got Michael Penis. They have all kinds
of weapons that divorce in Cleveland for him being Coach
of the Year a couple different times. I mean, he
had a bad season and yet it felt it feels
(25:43):
to me like there was more underlying stuff where they
weren't on the same page with the Deshaun Watson situation.
Then they go out and they draft twelve quarterbacks this year.
You know, just the whole thing felt really uneasy, and
so he's gonna be looking for a job and they
got the opening. It feels like a guy that can build,
you know, is definitely a good coach. I mean, the
fact that he's won a couple of the Coach a year,
(26:04):
Like I said, I wouldn't be surprised if they're already
on the phone with him.
Speaker 2 (26:07):
Yeah maybe maybe. I mean he's not proven that he
can get you all the way. I mean there are
there might be a couple of candidates like Harball that
have won it all before. It's all said and done
that maybe that's something they'd be more interested in. But
I think Stefanski is a strong candidate. There some other things.
I'm just gonna go over the board and then we'll
(26:28):
come back to what the main topic is here. Been
looking Tennessee and the Giants. They've been looking for a
while safe officially safe Aaron Glenn with the Jets, Shane
Steichen at the Indianapolis Colts, Dan Quinn at Washington's going
to be brought back, and so is Jonathan Gannon at
the Arizona Cardinals. So they've already been given the assurance
(26:51):
that they're going to be back. Some other candidates we
might see before the day comes to a close. Mike
McDaniel with Miami. I don't think that's a good sign
at all that they have brought in Troy Aikman as
a consultant. I think Troy Aikman believes in disciplinarian coaches,
and I think that he thinks they need a different quarterback.
(27:13):
He's been one of the harshest critics of both McDaniel
and to it publicly, so probably not a good sign
for him that he's going to keep his job. Might
not happen today, But it kind of feels like there's
going to be a change there in Miami. I think
Todd Bowles has to be a little nervous to have
the season fall apart on him the way that it did,
(27:33):
But something tells me he's going to survive. And then
you've got Schottenheimer in Dallas. You never know what Jerry's
going to do. Sean McDermott might have to win at
all in order to keep his job. In Buffalo, I
think they run out of patience in the Josh Allen
era of not at least making it to the super Bowl.
And I've even heard Lafleur might be a candidate because
(27:57):
of the way the Green Bay Packers season nearly disintegrated
on them. And John Harbaugh and Mike Tomlin also are
guys that might just want to move on, might just
be ready for something new. But Pete Carroll is the
name that we have circled here on this Black Monday.
Report started to circulate yesterday that he will be out
(28:17):
at some point today as the head coach of the
Las Vegas Raiders. It makes sense to me. I mean,
you don't bring it. You brought in a seventy five
year old head coach with the idea and a forty
year old quarterback. Thirty five year old quarterback because and
maybe you convinced yourself poorly of this. Maybe it's your fault.
(28:38):
You thought you were close. You thought, if you've got
a guy that's won before and a quarterback with some experience,
you improve that position and you're going to be a
better team. You're gonna be a playoff team this year.
And instead, Ashley, they had the worst record in the
National Football League, They've got the number one pick in
the draft, and they're staring straight into the face of
(29:01):
a rebuild. And you just don't have a seventy five
year old head coach when you're starting a rebuild.
Speaker 7 (29:06):
No, and it was an interesting choice when they took him,
but I you know, his energy is positive and maybe
that's what they were looking for. I didn't quite understand it,
but I was happy for Pete to get the job.
But it's not like the Raiders even ever looked good
this season. Yes, they got to win yesterday, but that
was against the Chiefs without Patrick Mahomes.
Speaker 2 (29:23):
And without them trying.
Speaker 7 (29:24):
Yeah, exactly. So, I mean they couldn't have looked worse
this year.
Speaker 4 (29:28):
Honestly, Yeah, they're bad and I'm all for it, and so,
I mean, I I think it probably is because yes,
you're staring a rebuild, right smack dab in the face,
and you've got a bunch of tough decisions to make.
I don't know for sure if they're still paying a
lot of people, like I know, Chip Kelly's gone, right
and they and you're paying him Antonio Brown from last year,
(29:51):
I think they're going Antonio Yeah, wait, Antonio Brown. Yeah,
he wasn't their head coach Antonio Pierce.
Speaker 2 (29:56):
Should he?
Speaker 4 (29:57):
Yeah, that wouldn't be good.
Speaker 2 (29:58):
Terrible head coach.
Speaker 7 (29:59):
Yeah, probably one of the worst ever well the worst ever,
topy on that one.
Speaker 4 (30:06):
So, I mean it's one of those you keep moving
on from people, but you have to figure out which
is the right one. You have to you have to
spend the money and figure out who's the right guy.
And you're right, I mean, as much as people can
love Pete Carroll, this year was not a good sign.
And I think he's probably done.
Speaker 2 (30:22):
I think he's coached his last game in the National
Football League. And I know he's got the energy, I
know he's got the spirit, but I think part of
it frankly is you also have to look at what
Seattle has done since he left. I mean, if you're
the Raiders and you're making that decision and you're like,
look what you've done to our team. We thought we
were going to be good this year, and then you
(30:43):
look at what the team has done that you left,
and how much they've gotten better in the course of
a couple of years. It's just to me, the writings
on the wall. I think he's a Hall of Fame candidate.
I think he could certainly be a coach at level somewhere,
but I think his days with the Raiders are over,
and I think his days in the National Football League
(31:05):
are over.
Speaker 7 (31:06):
Yeah, I feel bad for him because, I mean, it's
we talk about it all the time. You want the
people that you really like to go out on the
best note, right, on a high note, and this is
not a high note for him.
Speaker 2 (31:16):
You know what though, But considering where they were, he
got to win in his last game, Yeah, that's true.
He got one more crack at it. He didn't have
to sit on the beach and think to himself, Hey,
I just want one more shot, Just get me one
more Well, he got his shot. Yeah, and he didn't
come through. I mean, I'm sure there were a lot
(31:36):
of things that conspired against him as head coach of
the Las Vegas Raiders, but this is a bottom line business.
And you went three and fourteen. No one had a
worse record in the entire National Football League in a year.
You told us at the beginning of the year that
you thought you could win the division. Hey, you want
to talk about falling short of expectations. So I think
(31:56):
he's out. I'd fire him on the Raiders.
Speaker 4 (31:59):
Yeah, well I would too. I mean, it just doesn't
working now. I don't know, it's unfortunate because I don't
think all the blames on him. He doesn't have a
great group of players. He's got a few good players,
but you just watch you look at the teams that
are in the playoffs, the teams that are excelling, and
it just they're built better. And so it's not all
on him. He shows up one year and tries to
(32:20):
make chicken salad out of you know what, and he
just didn't do it. So, yeah, they're gonna move on.
I would be willing to bet even though they're just
continuing to kind of turn this thing over. But you
got to keep trying until you find the right guy.
Speaker 2 (32:32):
Yeah. Well he did bring the chicken Geno Smith, that
was his decision.
Speaker 3 (32:36):
Yeah, yeah, he did do that.
Speaker 2 (32:38):
That was terrible too. Coming to Angelma coming up next.
Our coach is really good and we're gonna hear from him.
Sports Radio ninety three point three kJ R f M.
Speaker 4 (32:50):
Yeah, they took it to the street. Took it to
their butt backside, is what they did.
Speaker 2 (32:54):
Took it it, taking it to the seat pants. I
see what you're saying. Yeah, what we did was we
just to bend him over our defensive knee and just
paddled him. Yeah, that spanked him.
Speaker 4 (33:04):
That's not nice.
Speaker 2 (33:05):
A little bit of a whoopy. Yeah, and not with
like a paddle, like insultingly, like with a bare hand.
Speaker 4 (33:10):
Oh yeah, smack smack smack that spanking rock.
Speaker 2 (33:14):
Yeah. And then he couldn't wiggle off.
Speaker 4 (33:16):
Yeah. Where you think you're going? Yah, send him to
their room afterwards too.
Speaker 6 (33:21):
Well.
Speaker 2 (33:21):
Legs flailing, little tiny baby legs flying all over the place.
The Seahawks win it over the forty nine ers by
final score of thirteen to three on Saturday night. It
wasn't nearly as close as the final score indicates Troy
Aikman made that very clear throughout the broadcast of how
much the Seahawks were dominating. I mean, it was a
(33:42):
little unsettling that we weren't pulling away. But in the end,
the Seahawks get the job done. And it all was
about the defense. San Francisco offense that had been rolling
as of late, but against Mike McDonald and his defense,
they could not do a thing. Christian McCaffrey just kept
(34:02):
running into walls. Rock Party had no time to throw
a dominant performance by the defense. How'd they get it done?
Here's coach.
Speaker 8 (34:10):
Yeah, they're a tremendous offense, probably, you know, top whatever
in the league. They're doing it for a long time.
They got great players, they got great coaches, man numbers,
back it up. Our got our got our guys played
great complimentary football today. They really did. And I can't
say enough. I can't wait to watch the tape to see.
You know, there's a lot of assists going on in there,
(34:32):
you know, guys, you know, guys rushing unselfishly to you know,
to free somebody else up, or to let somebody else
have a two way go so they can cover for them.
You know, how we played in the back end. You know,
it felt like it felt like we were ahead of plays.
These guys did a great job. So yeah, I'm looking
forward to watching it. I won't watch it on the plane,
but i'll watch it tomorrow.
Speaker 6 (34:49):
Uh. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (34:50):
He talks about how he wants it to feel like
there are twelve guys on defense, and that's how it
felt Saturday night. It felt, I mean, and I can
tell that's the way it felt with Rock. I mean,
he had been on a flat roll as of late.
What do you have five throws that he didn't He
wasn't being hit on. It felt like in the game
(35:10):
McCaffrey didn't have one hole the entire game, and there
wasn't one hole. Yeah, he had twenty three yards rushing
for goodness sake, he didn't have a single hole. He
ran into some walls and created three or four yards
on a few different carries, but he didn't have one hole.
I mean, you're facing a red hot offense, a division rival,
that much at stake, and you don't even allow them
(35:33):
to get off the mat. It's like wrestling your older brother,
you know, and you thought maybe you'd get a little
bit of an advantage and you can't even get off
of the living room carpet and you're just getting so
angry and frustrated, and mom and dad won't even help
you because you need to learn that lesson. And that's
what the forty nine ers learned.
Speaker 4 (35:51):
Yeah, the defense was stifling.
Speaker 2 (35:53):
I mean McDonald was over them, like taking a loogie
and like dripping it down.
Speaker 6 (35:59):
Back up.
Speaker 4 (36:00):
Yeah, take that, that's rude. Yeah, but I did it
to my little brother. I mean Christian McCaffrey's longest run
was five yards. I mean for him to not be
able to I mean I was coming into it thinking
that's kind of a key, he's gonna get his. No,
he didn't get his. That's a it's not even you
didn't you hope to contain him. You just absolutely stopped
(36:20):
him and you were harassing brock Purty. And then even
when he was completing passes, there was nothing after the catch.
I mean it was just all around stifling. I mean
it was a smothering defensive performance. And you couldn't showed
up at a better time.
Speaker 7 (36:33):
No, And I think they definitely remembered that first game
and wish they would have won it. And they were like, okay, well,
we'll show you now where we're at at the end
of the season, when it's all on the line, the
one that matters.
Speaker 2 (36:42):
It just doesn't even seem close. I know the score
stayed close throughout the entire game, but it just did
not even feel like they were even in the same category.
And if you did have twelve guys, it's because Nicki
and Warri there are two of them. I mean, he
just seemed like he was everywhere. Was one play he's
hitting Kittle on a screen for a loss of six.
(37:04):
The next he's covered McCaffrey and making sure he doesn't
catch a ball out of the backfield. The next time
he's hitting Purty as he throws. What a sensational draft
pick he's been. And that's not a rookie. That's not
a rookie that we have on defense wearing number three.
That is somebody that has arrived. He is one of
the best defensive players in the National Football League right now.
(37:29):
As far as what it has earned you, well, we
can tell you that they now have home field advantage
throughout the playoffs, But what does that mean to coach McDonald.
I'm glad you brought that up.
Speaker 8 (37:40):
All the things you've been talking about over the last
you know, thirty minutes or so. I mean, that's that's
definitely a point of pride. You know that we can
we can have a home you know, at least one
home playoff game in front of the twelves. They've been
dynamite this year. They've been absolute, just incredible, So we're
really excited to be able to stay home.
Speaker 7 (38:00):
Oh, in case you lose one game at a time,
one game at a time.
Speaker 2 (38:05):
I see, I see he's not getting ahead of himself.
H Yeah. Well look, I mean they've been better on
the road here in the Mike McDonald here than they've
been at home. But certainly you want the home field advantage.
I think the biggest advantage is having this week off
and not have to risk anything. It feels like a
wide open NFL playoffs this year, maybe unlike anything we've
(38:28):
ever seen. The AFC certainly feels wide open. I do
count the Seahawks as the favorite to win the NFC,
but certainly there are teams that can jump up and
get you. So whatever advantage you can get, they earned
it this season. They earned it Saturday night, and home
field advantage is one of those advantages. They could get
(38:50):
and they made sure they got it done. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (38:52):
Well, I mean it's a weird season where it's it
seemed like there wasn't a bunch of teams that wanted
to rise up and say we're the best. And yet
over the last couple of months the Seahawks are kind
of gradually going in the direction. Now they're drastically going
in that direction defensively, and then there's been some scuffles
to some degree offensively or I don't know if we
want to call it scuffle, just not looking the same,
(39:14):
not looking as explosive as they were early. But that's said,
I mean, it's you just you go out and play
to win, and you figure out how you're going to
get that done. Sometimes you have to score thirty, other
times you can score thirteen. And right now the defense
is playing in a way where the offense just needs
to be complementary to them, and right now they're doing that. So,
I mean, they're the favorites, I think, the favorites to
(39:35):
win at all at this point in time, and yet
there's still is work to be done. They're not going
to be easy.
Speaker 2 (39:40):
They're only three teams the entire National Football League with
a plus point differential of more than one forty, and
the Seahawks are number one with one ninety one, one
ninety one. I mean, think about how good the Jaguars
have been there plus one thirty eight. So it's not
just been defense, even though that certainly carried the team.
(40:02):
But you don't get to a plus one ninety one
point deferential if you're not also putting points up on
the board throughout the season. And Sam Darnold has done
just that. He and JSN and the Seahawks offense. All
right here, Mellon's gonna join us next Mike Homgrin at
nine o'clock, two hours of Monday morning quarterback. So much
to discuss right here on Chuck and Buck Sports Radio
