spent three hours, you know, talking about the Mariners season
coming to a close. We reserve our our last hour
to talk about Monday night football. Seahawks went over the
Houston Texans twenty seven to nineteen. So we'll spend our
final hour this Tuesday with our favorite football analysts, Hugh
millon r QB one and also coach Mike Holmgren as well.

I didn't you know, with the baseball game on, I
didn't spend a lot of time watching this football game.

One hundred and ninety eight penalty yards, four turnovers by
the Seahawks, and still they managed to win by eight
points despite going two for fourteen on third down. Did
I pick a good game to miss if I was

Think he did. I think he really did. I Every
once a while, I'd switch on the Mariner game too.
I kind of going back and forth. And you know Kathy,
you know, for years she couldn't stay in the stadium
and watch us play because she took the game so
seriously and her hurt when we lost, so and she
couldn't watch the Mariners. So I watched more of the

football game, probably than you did. But I was going
back and forth. Yeah, the Texans weren't very impressive to me.

What stood out to you about that result last night?
Speaker 5 (02:18):
Well, I think going into the game, just knowing how
Houston was defensively number one in the NFL fewest points
allowed less than a touchdown or accuve me more than
a touchdown less than the Seahawks at just twelve points
per game allowed. They were top five and everything. So
you kind of figured that it was going to be

a little bit clunky and inconsistent for the Seahawks offense.
But I think that if you look at what Seattle
did defensively, if your opponent, they're running backs, have fifteen
carries for thirty one yards, and you hold the opponent
quarterback under a sixty passer rating, that that's going to

be a formula to win a game, even when you
play ugly offensively.

All right, Well, so our defense played well and even
though the stats don't necessarily jump off the page, Hugh
and coach, you can answer this too. I mean that
it looked Are you saying that our offense looked good
or just looked good against a good defense?

Uh, our offense, Our offense, I think just looked inconsistent
against a very good defense. I think that they had
some of their best plays in the first quarter. Uh,
you know that play action, fake the stretch and get
and get Elijah Royal to stutter and then run up
the sideline. They hit that you had to play with

with Cooper Cup he aligns in the left slot on
a play action. He kind of runs a shallow cross
from left to right, acting like he wants to block,
and then he emerges all the way to the other
side and then runs a go route up the right
sideline even though he had started on the left. I
think there were some plays like that and others Mike,

where you know, you know this coach that you have
some plays you get, Man, I really love this. I
think this is gonna work. You know, it looks good
in practice, and then you have the impulse to get
it on the script early or to call it early.
They work and what have you And and then you know,
not that you shoot your wad, but but maybe some

of your best big plays you've already used by the
end of the first quarter. That kind of how is
how it played out to some degree last night.

Yeah, I think that, you know it. I was what
kept going through my mind is that without enjigma, what
what are we doing here? You know, because it was
you know, he was he was superb he was really good.
And to be good like he has, you know, Sam

has to be throwing it on time and and his
touchdown passed to him and he got hit right in
the face after you threw the ball. Those things got
them the win. And you know she was right. The
defensive guys, they they got the win for the team

last night. And they're really good on defense, and they're
really good upfront, and they have a great middle linebacker
right now. So that I think that's going to be
the formula. I think that's going to be the formula
for the rest of the season.

And I know you you've got some thoughts on this,
but let's uh, let me divert this to coach first,
How do you reconcile that you have a red hot
wide receiver that apparently can't get covered because you know,
the defenses are trying to stop a guy that has
two hundred more of your seeding yards than the second
place guy in the National Football League. With trying to

balance out this offense coach going forward, because I'm pretty
sure sure you can't be just a one man attack.

No, I don't think they are. I think there it's
kind of falling into place but I blame the opposing
defense as good as Houston is on defense, and they're
secondary strong that they couldn't answer. They did not have
an answer for that. And that's what amazes me about
this young man. I mean, he's a really good receiver.

I don't think they call plays necessarily to get him
the ball, but their structure of their routes and so
on frees him up. There are certain things on play
action pass and then the crossers and think on the
deep cross that's for him. But he generally speaking, he
doesn't drop the ball. You know, he's very quick. He's
understands zone and man reads in there so he gets open.

He has more room than a lot of receivers. So
you know, I can't say enough about him.

Yeah, he even makes a fifteen yard penalty look cool.

Well, he's he's as we've talked about.

I think his frame, uh you know, at six', one
a little over two hundred, pounds he's a mid size
guy with with relatively short, legs which which kind of
prevents him from having elite long, speed but it does
allow him to have extreme. Quickness HIS iq is off the,
chain his. HANDS i, mean you you can't not distract.

HIM i, mean he's gonna land every plane when the
ball's near. Him he tracks the.

Ball like an. Outfielder so there's so.

Much but it look they targeted him fourteen times last,

difficult to go against is similar to The seattle. Defense

lot of, zone but they do a lot of zone.
Pressures they bring guys and it puts a it puts
a strain on you to just decipher where the pressure's

spent three hours, you know, talking about the Mariners season
coming to a close. We reserve our our last hour
to talk about Monday night football. Seahawks went over the
Houston Texans twenty seven to nineteen. So we'll spend our
final hour this Tuesday with our favorite football analysts, Hugh
millon r QB one and also coach Mike Holmgren as well.

Good morning, gentlemen, Good morning, Good morning, Chuck, Good morning.
I didn't you know, with the baseball game on, I
didn't spend a lot of time watching this football game.

So you bet my eyes on this one. Coach.

One hundred and ninety eight penalty yards, four turnovers by
the Seahawks, and still they managed to win by eight
points despite going two for fourteen on third down. Did
I pick a good game to miss if I was
going to miss any I.
Speaker 4 (01:44):
Think he did. I think he really did. I Every
once a while, I'd switch on the Mariner game too.
I kind of going back and forth. And you know Kathy,
you know, for years she couldn't stay in the stadium
and watch us play because she took the game so
seriously and her hurt when we lost, so and she
couldn't watch the Mariners. So I watched more of the

football game, probably than you did. But I was going
back and forth. Yeah, the Texans weren't very impressive to me.

What stood out to you about that result last night?
Speaker 5 (02:18):
Well, I think going into the game, just knowing how
Houston was defensively number one in the NFL fewest points
allowed less than a touchdown or accuve me more than
a touchdown less than the Seahawks at just twelve points
per game allowed. They were top five and everything. So
you kind of figured that it was going to be
(02:39):
a little bit clunky and inconsistent for the Seahawks offense.
But I think that if you look at what Seattle
did defensively, if your opponent, they're running backs, have fifteen
carries for thirty one yards, and you hold the opponent
quarterback under a sixty passer rating, that that's going to
(03:04):
be a formula to win a game, even when you
play ugly offensively.
Speaker 6 (03:08):
All right, Well, so our defense played well and even
though the stats don't necessarily jump off the page, Hugh
and coach, you can answer this too. I mean that
it looked Are you saying that our offense looked good
or just looked good against a good defense?
Speaker 4 (03:25):
You?

Uh, our offense, Our offense, I think just looked inconsistent
against a very good defense. I think that they had
some of their best plays in the first quarter. Uh,
you know that play action, fake the stretch and get
and get Elijah Royal to stutter and then run up
the sideline. They hit that you had to play with

with Cooper Cup he aligns in the left slot on
a play action. He kind of runs a shallow cross
from left to right, acting like he wants to block,
and then he emerges all the way to the other
side and then runs a go route up the right
sideline even though he had started on the left. I
think there were some plays like that and others Mike,
(04:09):
where you know, you know this coach that you have
some plays you get, Man, I really love this. I
think this is gonna work. You know, it looks good
in practice, and then you have the impulse to get
it on the script early or to call it early.
They work and what have you And and then you know,
not that you shoot your wad, but but maybe some
(04:29):
of your best big plays you've already used by the
end of the first quarter. That kind of how is
how it played out to some degree last night.
Speaker 4 (04:37):
Yeah, I think that, you know it. I was what
kept going through my mind is that without enjigma, what
what are we doing here? You know, because it was
you know, he was he was superb he was really good.
And to be good like he has, you know, Sam
(04:59):
has to be throwing it on time and and his
touchdown passed to him and he got hit right in
the face after you threw the ball. Those things got
them the win. And you know she was right. The
defensive guys, they they got the win for the team

last night. And they're really good on defense, and they're
really good upfront, and they have a great middle linebacker
right now. So that I think that's going to be
the formula. I think that's going to be the formula
for the rest of the season.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
And I know you you've got some thoughts on this,
but let's uh, let me divert this to coach first,
How do you reconcile that you have a red hot
wide receiver that apparently can't get covered because you know,
the defenses are trying to stop a guy that has
two hundred more of your seeding yards than the second
place guy in the National Football League. With trying to

balance out this offense coach going forward, because I'm pretty
sure sure you can't be just a one man attack.
Speaker 4 (06:03):
No, I don't think they are. I think there it's
kind of falling into place but I blame the opposing
defense as good as Houston is on defense, and they're
secondary strong that they couldn't answer. They did not have
an answer for that. And that's what amazes me about
this young man. I mean, he's a really good receiver.
(06:25):
I don't think they call plays necessarily to get him
the ball, but their structure of their routes and so
on frees him up. There are certain things on play
action pass and then the crossers and think on the
deep cross that's for him. But he generally speaking, he
doesn't drop the ball. You know, he's very quick. He's
understands zone and man reads in there so he gets open.
(06:48):
He has more room than a lot of receivers. So
you know, I can't say enough about him.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Yeah, he even makes a fifteen yard penalty look cool.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
Well, he's he's as we've talked about.
Speaker 5 (07:05):
I think his frame, uh you know, at six', one
a little over two hundred, pounds he's a mid size
guy with with relatively short, legs which which kind of
prevents him from having elite long, speed but it does
allow him to have extreme. Quickness HIS iq is off the,
chain his. HANDS i, mean you you can't not distract.

HIM i, mean he's gonna land every plane when the
ball's near. Him he tracks the.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
Ball like an. Outfielder so there's so.
Speaker 5 (07:38):
Much but it look they targeted him fourteen times last,
night and the other starting, Receiver Cooper cup was targeted.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
ONCE i just don't. THINK i just don't.

THINK i we you, know discussed this at length and
the post came, well not at, length but we touched
on this last night That. MIKE i JUST i don't
think that the offense is gonna reach its. Potential you,
know the next closest guy was a royal with five,
targets So jigba had almost three times as. Much so

so if we're if we're talking about ways that we
want to maximize the potential of this, OFFENSE i don't
think it's with this balance distributing the ball in the passing.

very good point, there because they need more. Balance, well

what you're taught to, do and he is very very
capable of getting.

you've got to find some other. Options so it's not
so easy to game plan. ANYWAYS i, mean typically if
you lose the turnover battle four to, one it doesn't

one pretty big no. No and So i'm, wondering, coach

don't study the coach's tape and maybe THE tv didn't

but Imagine mike THE z. Spot but instead of the,

corner the tight end running the corner, route the tight
end runs a. Scene and so, normally if you're gonna

against a three deep, defense there's there's a structure where.

and you'd want to pull him into the middle you'd
want to have something else occupying that free safety and

pass was you, know kind of next. Level that's an
extremely high difficulty play to play with that, timing the
defensive look that he. Had you, know he's trying to
get it between the corner and the, safety but but
there had been another safety that had kind of was

right in his. Sellvision he had to throw over him
and to put in that spot with that kind of,
pressure that was an elite throw that you, know the
the go route up the sideline that he just walks
out there doing jigba and all the other. Things and
AND i think that what makes The Demico ryans defense
difficult to go against is similar to The seattle. Defense

they don't play a lot of, man they play a
lot of, zone but they do a lot of zone.
Pressures they bring guys and it puts a it puts
a strain on you to just decipher where the pressure's
coming from and where the windows. Are and, so you,
know he didn't have his best, game but he played

well enough to win given the circumstances and how well
the defense.
