Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's time for the Oat Show, the best twelve minutes
of eight minutes of radio, brought to you by the rich,
complex flavor of Pendleton Whiskey weather Bye, please, great responsibly.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Eight o'clock hour. Here on a football Friday, Welcome in
to our show and to our hearts. Yes, Football Friday
is sponsored by Tito's Handmade Vodka, proud sponsor of the Seahawks,
distilled and bottled by Fifth Generation, Inc. Austin, Texas, forty
percent alcohol by volume. Saver responsibly got a little bit
(00:37):
of that in the cupboard for tonight. We got to
get a little something else in the cupboard for tonight.
But here on a football Friday, the only thing in
our cupboard is Tito's Handmade Podcast. Yeah, so, welcome into
the show. Welcome into the eight o'clock hour. The Oat
Show is the eight top stories of the day. Used
to do it every day, Now we only do it
on Fridays. It's a service we provide. We recap the week,
(01:00):
get you ready for the weekend at the exact same time,
giving you the eight top stories that we have to discuss.
No Bucky Jacobson here today. That's the ninth biggest story
of the day, so it didn't quite make the o cho. Yeah,
so well close, couldn't find any audio to support it.
Ashley Ryan is here though. My name is Chuck Powell,
(01:20):
and here we go. We'll get started with the Mariners,
whose twenty twenty five season came to an end at
the beginning of the week, losing in crushing fashion to
the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Championship Series
Game number seven, And so reluctantly we give ourselves to
(01:40):
the offseason, which has officially begun for the Mariners, and
it really doesn't until we hear from the three wise men.
Dan Wilson, Justin Hollander, Jerry Depoto all met with the
media yesterday and very informal fashion. It wasn't behind microphone,
it wasn't behind the desk. It was just standing around
(02:02):
with the media and openly answering whatever questions the media
had for them. Jerry Depoto, of course, has had to
consider all of the criticism of Dan Wilson and his
decisions in Game number seven back on Monday all week long,
and he just wanted to clear the air on how
much he supports his manager.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
Is calm, He is methodical, and everything he does, he
trusts in the people around him, from the coaches to
the players, especially the players leans in and wants it
to be a player driven environment with player leadership that
comes from the clubhouse out and you know, his leadership
style is to cultivate that leadership within the clubhouse and
(02:47):
has been from the time he was working as a
special assistant in player development.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
You know he is.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
He is.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
More thoughtful about the as a person than just about
anybody I've been around.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
Any Dan Wilson not going anywhere. I think we knew that. Yeah,
and yeah, that pretty much emphasizes how much Jerry Depoto
supports him. And we've talked about this over the years.
There's so much more to being a manager. There's a
reason they call it a manager, not a head coach.
At the major league baseball level, I mean, you're dealing with,
(03:24):
you know, somebody, You're dealing with twenty six guys on
a daily basis that were the best player on their
team for almost their entire lives. Okay, and then you're
dealing with guys who are making millions of dollars a
lot more than you are, and some of them are
making a lot more than their teammates, and some of
them aren't even as good as some guys that make
(03:50):
make more money or less money, or whatever the case
may be. You see what I'm saying, And so it
is a constant. And then you're dealing people that have
personal lives sometimes interfere. And then you have relationships, you know,
guys that get into battles within the clubhouse that don't
like each other. So that really is the main job
(04:12):
of the manager, managing all of the personalities, managing the
day to day game operations and x'es and o's are important,
it's an important part of it. But if you're good
at all that other stuff, then there are ways to
handle the x'es and o's better, which I'll talk to
talk about here in a moment. But that's Jerry Depoto saying,
(04:33):
not only is Dan Wilson good at all of that
other stuff managing all of that stuff, He's the best
I've ever seen at managing all of that stuff. And
so that's why Dan Wilson, despite our criticisms, which I
think personally are legitimate, of his in game operations, that's
why he's not going anywhere because the things that really
are the biggest part of his job. He's been very
(04:54):
good at and obviously Jerry Depoto thinks he's awesome at.
Speaker 4 (04:58):
Yeah, I was't.
Speaker 5 (04:59):
It was I hearing Jerry's thoughts on what Dan's strengths
are from, you know, just from their perspective, and hearing
him be emotional about his manager and about his team
and everything. I mean, the I thought of Jerry's press
conference the best part or not press conference, but you know,
scrum whatever. The best part for me was when Jessman
(05:20):
asked him one word to describe how you feel right
now or how you feel about this this season, and
he said, you know, I'm gonna give you a different
answer now than I probably will a month from now,
but disappointed. Yeah, And then he got emotional and teared
up and then just finished with yeah, just disappointed. And
(05:41):
I almost got tiery just watching him, because you know, again,
we all think so many people think these guys are
just up there doing things. They don't really care about
these things, And Jerry has gotten a lot of flack
for not caring, Yes, but clearly he does.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Yeah, jess Me will do that today. She's like the
Roy Firestone of modern day broadcast.
Speaker 6 (06:00):
What I've always called her, Yeah, she wants you to cry.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
Ah, he's doing that in the office too. As for
Jerry's thoughts on the actual that seventh inning decision that
will be debated for generations, it's hard to make those
decisions in real time. I'll never begrudge him Dan for
making a move he believed in end quote, so not
holding it against him, but not exactly supporting the decision.
(06:24):
He's not exactly saying, oh, it's the right move. Zarta
has been great in that situation, but obviously that's not
going to interfere. Dan Wilson's been given sort of control
over those in game operations, which was a big question
mark back in the Scott Service days. People thought the
decisions were being made overhead. I can tell you personally,
(06:44):
whenever I've asked Justin or Jerry about that specific topic,
they always, whether it's on Mike or off Mike, say, oh,
that's Dan Toacy, we don't have anything to do with it.
And so I don't know why they would consistently lie
about that if it wasn't true. All that said, something
that I talked about yesterday in our nine o'clock hour.
I think Dan Wilson needs some help. Yeah, And I
(07:07):
do think he struggled with in game decisions, and it
wasn't just a standalone Eddie Bizardo decision. I think he
struggled with in game decisions all season long in his
first full year on the job. And I certainly trust
that he will get better and the game will slow
down for him the more that he manages. But I
think they need an upgrade at bench coach. I think
(07:28):
there are a lot of great candidates out there, guys
that while he's, you know, spinning all the plates and
doing all the juggling, there's somebody that is just thinking
about strategy, that is just there as a sounding board,
or maybe just somebody saying, hey, Dan, you know Springer
and Guerrero could come up here in the next inning. Yeah,
maybe we want Muonios up. Yeah, maybe we want him
(07:51):
up now.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
And maybe that happened. Maybe many actor did that in
the dugout. I don't know, but but I just I
think that he could use some Yoda type sage sitting there.
Speaker 4 (08:05):
I don't think it could hurt that's.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
Not looking to climb the corporate ladder, that's not looking
to take his job, that respects him loves him and
wants him to do well, and I think that that
might be something the Mariners could tap into this offseason.
But all right, well, we've got a lot of time
talk Mariners offseason coming up throughout the entire winter, and
(08:28):
at one point I will get really excited about doing that,
but maybe that's not now. In the meantime, Item number
two on the O Show, World Series Game one tonight,
if you're excited about.
Speaker 7 (08:40):
I do care?
Speaker 2 (08:43):
First batch, five pm from Toronto tonight. Interesting decision for
John Schneider, the worst, John, the Bad John Schneider, Treya Savage. Yes,
Treya Savage is getting the start for the Blue Jayson
Game one. I mean they've had seven days off. They
could start Kevin Gosman. Yeah, and instead John Schneider is
(09:05):
going with rookie Treya Savage. We talked about this earlier
in the show. He has more postseason starts in his
career than regular season starts in his career. Can you
believe that somebody that three career regular season starts and
is starting Game one of the World Series when Schneider
could have picked anyone in his entire organization.
Speaker 4 (09:26):
Yeah, it's crazy to me. This is I think I
figured it out.
Speaker 5 (09:29):
This would be his seventh start total, and that is
insane him.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
So three in the postseason, three in the regular season,
fourth and this would be okay, yeow, that's crazy.
Speaker 4 (09:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
Blake Snell will get the start for the Dodgers, who
have just been mowing people down in the playoffs. Last year,
the Dodgers had a great starting rotation, but everybody was
hurt by the time they got to the playoffs. This year,
everybody was hurt during the regular season, with the exception
of Yamamoto, and now they're all healthy in time for
the playoffs. So it's the best Rota money can buy.
(10:01):
I mean, they didn't develop one of those guys. Blake
Snell and Tyler Glasnow are both from the Rays. Yamamoto
and Otani were brought over one from Japan and then
Otani free agent from the Angels. So to have those
four guys and the way they're pitching right now. I'm
not saying this because I don't want Toronto to win,
(10:24):
even though I don't want Toronto to win, but I
think that it doesn't get out of LA. I think
the Dodgers win in four or five, and before any
Toronto fan thinks I'm being biased. I would have said
the same thing about US. Yeah, I think that they're
just playing that well. They're just pitching that well. And
they are and they're healthy.
Speaker 4 (10:45):
They seem unstoppable.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
They're the best team money could buy. Yeah, and they're
not banged up like they normally are this time of
the year. So first pitch, five o'clock from Toronto. The
World Series gets started tonight. If that interests you US,
I don't care. Number three. The Huskies will be in
action tomorrow against the fighting a line eye of Illinois.
And I know, I know. Look, look, I'm ten years
(11:07):
of Washingtonian, ten years of seattlete and I know how
intimidating it can be to face the program I grew
up with. I mean, one hundred years of mediocrity can
really be an intimidating thing to go up against, no
matter what year you faced them.
Speaker 4 (11:26):
Terrifying.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
So when you gotta face Illinois, my sympathies are with
my new Husky fans.
Speaker 4 (11:33):
Okay, yeah, thank you.
Speaker 2 (11:35):
Sorry, Ashley, No, that's sorry. You got to go up
against the ghost of Dick BUCKUS Saturday. I don't know.
Speaker 4 (11:42):
Now, I'm just picturing the ghost of Dick Buckers. He's
a lot for some reason. Yeah, I think he is.
But for some reason, the ghost of him is making
me laugh.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
Is the ghost of Dick Bucause the guy from My
Two Dads or the football player?
Speaker 6 (11:55):
Definitely the guy from My Two Dads? Twelve thirty kickoff
from Montlake. Illinois actually is good this year.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
They are five and two, same record as the Huskies,
two and two in conference, same record as the Huskies. Illinois, though,
enters this game ranked twenty third in America. Cam Cleland
was on with US Wednesday and gave us a little
profile of the Illinois.
Speaker 8 (12:17):
Well, it's Brett v Laman. If you ever watch any
of his style of football, you'll see that they're two
losses and a ranked team.
Speaker 1 (12:24):
So that matters.
Speaker 8 (12:25):
Because he knows how to coach the aline I are.
They can be beat, no question. It's really going to
come down to what's our health going to look like.
I'm going to say this the rest of the season,
we will live and die. In my opinion, with how
Demond carries himself in this game, He's put himself on
a shoulder as he carries the team's energy and the
speed and the tempo. He has that kind of athleticism,
(12:48):
So I like to see him be able to take
advantage of the defense because they are they are a
good defense, but they're not a great defense. And then
from our defensive perspective versus their offense, it just is
it is there going to be the ability to stop edge,
contain tight ends in the flat and I know coach
Walters addressed that. So there's just so many factors going
to this football game. But you got to defend home
(13:09):
turf boys. We have to at this point. You're going
to make a run late in the season to get
ready to be in position at the end of the
year against Oregon. You need the home games like there's
no tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (13:20):
Dogs are favored by four and a half points. I'll
say this about Illinois, and this is with all seriousness.
I'll take the tongue out of my cheek. I think
you are going to get a good effort from them,
Oh absolutely, And I think that you are facing a
quality football opponent. I don't know what we get out
of the Dogs from week to week. I don't know
what we get out of Demon Williams from week to week.
I don't know why with offensive mind like Jedfish, who
(13:43):
is as accomplished as he is, that this team can't
play good offense until the second half for four straight
weeks in a row, and so you better play a
good version of U Dub football or you're going to
lose this game. You certainly aren't going to cover four
and a half points. So I know what you're gonna
(14:04):
get from ILLINOI. You're gonna get good quarterback play from Altmeyer,
and you're gonna get a defense that's gonna pop you
in them out. That's what you're gonna get from Illinois.
What are we gonna get from you Dub? That to
me is the mystery going into this game. And I
wish that I didn't have to say that, because nobody
wants to be a coach of a inconsistent football team, right.
(14:27):
That reflects on the coaching staff when you don't know
what you're getting from your players from week to week.
Speaker 5 (14:32):
Yeah, and inconsistent is definitely the way to describe them,
and that they're in no position to look past anyone
Illinois perdue whoever it.
Speaker 4 (14:38):
Is, like you, you're right about that.
Speaker 5 (14:40):
Yeah, you need to be coming and bringing your a
game every single week because you looked terrible last week.
Speaker 2 (14:46):
It's not a great college football weekend. The SEC is
probably gonna have to carry it to a degree. The
only three games featuring ranked teams all from the SEC
eight Ole Miss at thirteen, Oklahoma at nine am, Mazoo
fifteen in the country at number ten, Vanderbilt at twelve thirty,
and number three Texas A and M at number twenty,
LSU at four thirty. Rick new Isiel was not with
(15:08):
us Tuesday, but aha, he's going to join us today
at nine o'clock to talk about the upcoming week in
college football. Meanwhile, the Seahawks or on buy Otherwise they
would have been a hot lot higher on the O
show list. Greg Bell was on with us this morning
to talk about Jackson Smith and Jigba. In this ongoing
conversation about all right, how do we balance not taking
(15:33):
catches away from JSN because he's thriving and also getting
other people involved. It seems like a really difficult task
for Clint Kubiak.
Speaker 7 (15:43):
Ultimately, what it comes down to is Kubiak can design
whatever and call whatever plays he wants, and he could
say the Cup is the primary on this one, or
Horton is where Barner is, but it's up to the
guy who throws the ball. And if he's reading or
trusting that jig was my guy on this play, that
I have a better chance of converting this fourth and
(16:03):
one by throwing an eighteen yard out to Smith and
Jigba than a two yard out to Barner, then he's
going to.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
Throw it there right and will into.
Speaker 7 (16:12):
Exactly And the more times the results are positive, which
so far they've been NFL best positive that reinforces Darnold's
decision in the snap when he's being chased by three
hundred pound guys. He's getting paid to make the right
decision at the right time to throw the ball to
the right place. It doesn't matter what the play call is.
If he thinks that the Smith and jig was his
(16:34):
best option, he's going there.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
Seahawks five and two tied to top the NFC West.
They will next play on a Sunday night against the
Washington Commanders. Will have no idea whether or not Jayden
Daniels will play in that game for a while, he's
certainly not playing this weekend. This week in the National
Football League will be played without the Seahawks, of course,
but last night the Chargers and the Vikings got it started.
Speaker 9 (17:00):
Second of ten at the twenty seven yard line. Chargers
up fourteen three, looking for more. Herbert sets and throws,
floating it down the right sideline. Mconkey is open. He
drops it down the sideline into the end zone.
Speaker 10 (17:11):
A Lad mcconkee touchdown makes it twenty to three.
Speaker 2 (17:16):
Los Angeles Chargers rule to a thirty seven to ten
win over the Minnesota Vikings thanks to a prime video
for the audio Justin. Herbert threw three touchdown passes and
Cam Dicker kicked three field goals, and of course I
was going against both of them in Fantasy Orsi ware. Yeah,
it's been one of those years. Chargers improved a five
and three, the Vikings fall to three and four. Kind
(17:37):
of a crappy week in the National Football League. No
wonder the Seahawks are on by. They don't want to
be associated with it.
Speaker 4 (17:42):
I get it.
Speaker 2 (17:43):
Not great games. The best early game or at least
most intriguing. Chicago at Baltimore, a one in five team
is your most intriguing early game. Dallas at Denver in
the afternoon, and then the Sunday night game is the
Aaron Rodgers Bowl. The Green Bay Packers will be at Pitzburg.
The Kracking finished a long road trip in impressive fashion.
(18:05):
Usually that last game of a road trip's a tough
one to win, but the Kracking put it together.
Speaker 10 (18:10):
Schwartz backup top, Hell did my Larsen right side back
to Shane right before shot tiptok goal rebound scares jaded
Schwartz crashing the goal and the Seattle Cracking burry the
loose change. It's a one nothing Cracking lead, seventeen thirty
two left in the second period.
Speaker 2 (18:28):
Paul the delightful ever fits you on the call of
Kracking Hockey right here at Sports Radio ninety three point
three KJRFM. Jaden Schwartz scored two goals, including one of
two empty netters late. This was really a one nothing
hockey game. With Joey Decord saving everybody's biscuits. Thirty two
saves thirty two opportunities and the Kracking go on to
(18:49):
a three to nothing win. That's a big that's a
nice win for coach Lambert.
Speaker 6 (18:52):
That is a great win. Yeah, no biscuits in the basket. Yeah,
Cracking are four to two and two on the early season.
They return home after a length the six game road trip.
They host Edmonton tomorrow night at Climate Pledge Arena. They'll
drop the puck at seven o'clock. And the NBA is
brand new into its season. The thunder have already played
two double overtime games.
Speaker 2 (19:12):
In three days. But the all the NBA world, all
the sports world yesterday was talking about nothing but the
scandal involving the FBI, Chauncey Billups, Terry Rosier, Damon Jones
and all sorts of illegal nonsense. Boy, we got a
scandal on our hand. Interesting thing because Greg Bill and
(19:33):
I talked about this earlier today, like the NFL should
use this as an opportunity to make.
Speaker 4 (19:39):
Sure what clean things up.
Speaker 2 (19:41):
The clean things up, and I think to address their
relationship with the daily prop bets. And after we had
that conversation Pro Football Talk, Greg sent me a little text, yeah, saying,
given the Terry Rogier situation, the obvious question is whether
the NFL eventually will have an unders scanned regarding player
prop bets. The less obvious question is whether it has
(20:03):
already happened, and so this is Pro Football Talk also
saying the NFL needs to like address this right now
and make sure that they don't have their own scandal
going forward and cast doubt over their own product. Is
there anything wrong with getting together with daily prop bets
and just saying on the individual players you can only
(20:24):
bet overs? No, but if you only bet could only
bet overs on individual player prop bets daily prop bets,
that way, the only way that you can win the
bet is if the player is over atch you.
Speaker 5 (20:35):
Yeah, if he's actually going out and doing what he's
supposed to do or above what he's supposed.
Speaker 2 (20:39):
To do, why not sing? Is that like stupid?
Speaker 5 (20:41):
I don't think. I mean, I was thinking the same thing.
It doesn't make sense to me why it couldn't happen.
But I also am not a huge gambler, So maybe
it has to have the boat both.
Speaker 4 (20:49):
Options and which case then get rid of the prop bets.
Speaker 2 (20:51):
Well, I would think that you bet the over or
you lose the bet, so you do have one way
or and go or they. But if we can't bet
the unders, not on team but on individual players on
their prop bets, yeah, Well, would that not solve worrying
on a day to day basis about whether or not
somebody is dropping balls on purpose or missing shots on purpose?
Speaker 5 (21:13):
I would think so it seems like an easy fix
to me, but clearly it must not be or they would.
Speaker 4 (21:17):
Have come up with it.
Speaker 2 (21:19):
I haven't given it a lot of thought, admittedly, but
maybe maybe all right. Coming up next, Jerry Depoto had
lots to say yesterday at their season ending press conference.
We'll hear from him next on Sports Radio ninety three
point three KJRFM. Right bring new Isel will join us
(21:45):
this morning at nine o'clock. Usually it's on Tuesdays, but
we're not going to pass up the opportunity to chat
with coach new Heisel, so he'll join us at nine.
We also will preview the Big Ten week in later
on this hour. But we've also been doing some Mariners,
sort of a player by player snapshots, if you will.
Heading into the offseason, plenty of time to talk about
(22:06):
this stuff over the course of the long, hard winter,
but I know a lot of people are thinking about
these items, and so we spent a little bit of
time here on this Friday discussing them. And in this segment,
I wanted to go through Jerry Depoto in his press
conference yesterday to discuss some of these things, and Josh
Naylor is certainly a big topic on the minds of
(22:27):
Mariner fans. He is a free agent. He does have
the right to test the market if you'd like. And
a lot of Marinder fans, of not all of them,
don't want to see Josh Naylor get outside the door.
You can count Ashley, Bucky and I among those people. Man,
he just seemed like an ideal fit for this team.
Here's Jerry on the prospects of keeping Josh.
Speaker 3 (22:48):
Yeah, obviously it's priority, and you know, we will take
a step back from where we are before we truly assess,
and we'll communicate with the player before we say anything publicly.
But you know, we're we're still, like I said, in
grief mode and so were they. But loved every minute
with those guys and with others who are pending free
agents or potentially pending free agents. And you know, we've
(23:11):
obviously been in planning mode and competitive mode and trying
to put together plans and rosters to win games. And
you know we've discussed twenty twenty six and beyond and
we do that fairly regularly, So it's not going to
sneak up on us. But it is appropriate to communicate
with those guys before we get publicly name.
Speaker 2 (23:30):
I remember when we traded for Josh Naylor, and I
love the move, was hoping that that move would get
made the entire offseason last off season, and then certainly
once we were approaching trading deadline, that was a popular
name on this show to bring in Josh Naylor. So
I loved it. But I do remember specifically the day
of the Josh Naylor trade being asked by Hugh Millen,
(23:50):
who was filling in for Dick Fane, about like, is
this somebody that you would keep long term? My comments
at the time were, I don't know if that's the
motivation and even part of the motivation behind this trade.
Josh Naylor, as everybody now knows, has a bit of
a sloppy body. I think there are some people that
aren't sure how well hill age that said after watching
(24:15):
him on a daily basis, seeing everything that he brings
to the table, and I do mean everything. Oh, you
better believe it's a priority. Yes, you better, Bordy number one.
And maybe Jerry and Justin already felt that way and
already knew that and thought that a couple of months
with Josh we can work on him, soften him to
Seattle and wanting to stay here, or maybe like me,
(24:37):
they're like, oh gosh, I did not realize this guy
was this good. Yeah, I did not realize. He brought
all this to the table. We got to keep him.
So obviously there were no discussions about that. Feels to
me like there haven't been any discussions at all about that.
But they've made it very clear that he is a priority,
if not the priority, roster wise, heading into this offseason,
(24:59):
and so so I think there's a good chance they're
gonna get it done. We've talked about how much money
is coming off the books, so it's not like gonna
this isn't one that you're gonna need. John Stanton, Please, John,
you got to give us this money.
Speaker 1 (25:12):
Now.
Speaker 2 (25:12):
The money's already created. You get Hanniger's money off the books,
you get Garver's money off the books, you get Dylan
Moore's money off the books. Counted it up just thirty
five and a half million dollars get freed from guys
that you have no interest in bringing back next season.
And so there's no way Josh Naylor's gonna command thirty
five million dollars a year. I think he'll command between
(25:33):
fifteen and twenty million dollars a year. I don't know
if that's too steep for the Mariners. My guess is
they understand his market and are willing to go there
With Josh Naylor. I have a good feeling that he's
going to be back next.
Speaker 4 (25:47):
Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 5 (25:48):
I don't know how they could think anything else, Like
it's got to be whatever it takes to get this guy,
and I don't.
Speaker 4 (25:55):
He doesn't strike me as the type of person.
Speaker 5 (25:56):
That's gonna be like, well, you know what, I think
I want twenty eight million dollars a year. Ye like,
just to try to blow, you know, blow him out
of the water. He doesn't strike me as that kind
of guy.
Speaker 2 (26:05):
He doesn't strike me as the eye have to open
myself up to bidding and take the highest bid. He
strikes me as the guy like I want you to
be fair with me, and yet if you can just
be fair with me, I like it here. I like
this team, and I'd like to be a part of it.
That's how he strikes me. I'm hoping that is the case.
I think we're going to get that one done. So
(26:25):
how much will we, if any, add to the payroll.
Here's Jerry, I.
Speaker 3 (26:30):
Would I would say similar to where we ended the year,
you know, as a starting pointer. So you know, we
ended the season I think with the second highest our
highest payroll that we've ever had as a franchise. And
this was always the goal was to methodically build toward
what we were doing. And you know, I'm comfortable that
the resources that we're given where we're going to have
every ability to go out and put together a championship
(26:52):
quality team, and like we have in recent years, when
we get into the right position, I'm certain that we
will be aggressive.
Speaker 2 (27:00):
I'm doing the next thing that might sound discouraging to
all of those Mariner fans that are just hell bent
on us having the highest payroll in the world. I
don't quite understand that argument, but certainly we have said
repeatedly we'd like to see them have a higher payroll.
That's actually an encouraging sign. He's saying, we'll start at
(27:20):
where we ended. Remember, they added a lot of money
to the payroll at the trading deadline, enough that it
made John Stanton admittedly uncomfortable about trying to get all
the owners to sign off on that. And so that's
what he's saying, going into the offseason, we will start
at a similar similar payroll to where we ended, and
then they have shown three out of the last four
(27:41):
years if we're in it, we get to the trading
deadline and we will push it further. I think everybody
listening needs to brace themselves for that, which means there's
probably not going to be a lot of adding of
free agents. Yes, there's thirty five and a half million
dollars weated right off the bat, right, and then if
(28:02):
you added Gino because you're out from under his salary
as well, then that adds even more. Remember we're gonna
start where we finished, right, Okay, so that puts you
like forty seven and a half million. But if you
give Naylor twenty, and you give Polanco twelve, and you
give pay raises because you have to because of arbitration
to Kirby Miller, Brash spire a Rose Arena. Yeah, and
(28:30):
there are a couple of others that I'm not thinking
about right now. Now, all of a sudden, you're getting
pretty close up to that limit. And I also don't
think we're carrying the holes into the off season that
we have carried in the past. I've seen some of
your wish lists out there. I don't know why you
do this to yourselves. Why do you have Kyle Tucker
on your wish list? Why do you have Alex Bregman
(28:52):
on your wish We are not going to do that.
They're not going to do that. And if that makes
you so angry that you can't follow this team anymore,
then you know, go start following the Dodgers. They'll just
defer payments until the year three thousand and eight. You
can get everything.
Speaker 4 (29:09):
Wrong, they're allowed to do it.
Speaker 2 (29:10):
Yeah, exactly, but we're just not gonna go there. As
a matter of fact, I don't think we're gonna do
much free agency at all. I saw we got to
have Bregman and Brandon Lao. Why do you want Brandon Lao?
Speaker 8 (29:23):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (29:23):
When we can keep Polonko, who was better last year.
Speaker 4 (29:27):
For cheaper Yeah. I like Plonko.
Speaker 2 (29:29):
I like Polonko, and you'll probably give us a little
bit of a discount to stay where he is not
a great one, but we'll probably get a little bit
of a discount there. I think the only thing you'd
have to do with Polonko is make sure you give
him multiple years. So two years, twenty five million probably
gets that done, and that gets under that threshold that
we're talking about, That gets under the Jerry threshold that
he was he was discussing. Maybe there's room for another
(29:52):
free agent, But where who do you want it to be?
And please don't give me Tucker and Bregman. You know
they're not spending forty million dollars per year on a
p They're just not going to do it. So who's
the guy that fits what you're looking for? And then
because I want to write them down, because then I
want a year later to show you, oh, wait a minute,
that guy that you were so desperate to have and
(30:13):
that you thought that they absolutely had to pay for
he played thirteen games this year because he's had a
chronic knee injury for five years and everybody knew it,
and that's why his market values slipped. Hey, I'll start
writing him down this offseason. I just don't think we're
going to add dramatically to payroll. And frankly, as much
as this sounds like sour words to everybody, I don't
(30:35):
think we have to. If they can bring back Naylor,
bring back Polonko, not retard the development of Cole Jung
as our starting second baseman by bringing back Polonko and
letting him dh and play some second base. Third base
seems to be a little bit of a whole right now.
Maybe we can afford to bring back Gino at third base,
(30:56):
Maybe they don't want to, maybe they do want to
see what Ben will you can do. I've already gone
over the outfield this morning and how it seems kind
of set going into this year. And frankly, I think
shortstop is the biggest area of concern going forward. But
do you really think they're just gonna punt on JP Crawford.
They're not going to find a trade partner for him
at twelve million dollars a year, I think that they
(31:18):
are waiting for cold Emerson to take over that job
from him. And so if you're anticipating us going all
in on Kyle Schwarber at forty five million dollars a year,
think again, you're just setting yourself up for disappointment. If
we can get Naylor back, get Polonko back, maybe or
maybe not Gino, and then if we go into next season,
(31:41):
that's a playoff team right there. And then if you
get to the trading deadline, as long as they're willing
to say, all right, let's fill our holes and not
worry about finances. Let's fill our oles. Well, I worry
about finances and put it over the top. We can
get over the top. We can get over the top
that way and without fantasizing about adding Tuck and we
can just get Tucker, Bregman and law worse set Why
(32:04):
do you even allow yourself to think?
Speaker 4 (32:07):
Then you're just setting yourself up to be angry.
Speaker 2 (32:09):
All right? Big Ten Preview and pickups next on KJR
HLL Right, Rick new Isel at the top of the hour.
That's right, we get our conversation with coach new eiel
in before the end of the week. We are excited
about it. But we always do a Big Ten preview
and pickups at eight forty five on Friday when things
(32:31):
like the American League Championship Series don't interfere. And so
let's go ahead and preview what's going on in the
Big Ten this weekend. UCLA is trying to prove that
what you've been seeing the last four weeks is the
real UCLA. They'll be at Indiana taking on the second
ranked team in America, the Indiana Hoosiers. I guess the
Hoosiers are giving UCLA like twenty six points. That seems
(32:54):
like a lot. Yeah, how well UCLA has been playing
under superstar coach Jerry new heisl here as of late,
Northwestern will be at Nebraska. That's also a nine am
kickoff tomorrow, and Rutgers will kick off with Purdue at
nine am. In the state of Indiana. Of course, the
Dogs hosting Illinois at twelve thirty tomorrow on Montlake Hanks
(33:15):
will start at eight thirty. In that one, Minnesota and
Iowa kickoff at the exact same time they played for
some like Rusty Pig or some sort of golden some
sort of rusty yeah, like the Rusty Pig or the
you know, the Golden Gopher or something in that game.
And so twelve thirty kickoff there from Iowa. Oregon's in
(33:36):
action against a really bad Wisconsin team. We're not used
to seeing Wisconsin be so bad, but they're bad. Wisconsin
at Oregon that will start at four o'clock. And then
the battle for the pride of the State of Michigan.
Michigan State hosting the Michigan Wolverines, twenty fifth ranked in
the country, and that game will kick off at four thirty.
(33:57):
Not quite as good as schedule this week in the
Ten as there is in the SEC, but not a
bad one either. So there's your schedule for schedule of
events in the Big Ten, and now we make our pickups.
We do a Big Ten Fantasy league for a green jacket,
and we do pickups every week. At this time, Kid
has not made a pickup all season long.
Speaker 4 (34:20):
Yeah, same roster, he's just riding with it.
Speaker 2 (34:22):
Uh huh. But this week he didn't really have a choice.
Nick Singleton of Penn State's been playing poorly. Penn State's
been playing poorly, and he has two guys out on
by this week, so he is going to make a pickup.
Let me update. Ashley leads the way with five hundred
and seventy six. But man, it's gotten frigging tight.
Speaker 4 (34:41):
Yeah it has.
Speaker 2 (34:42):
She's only sixteen points up on both Bucky and Kid.
That's right. Bucky's got fIF five hundred and sixty point
seven points. Kid has five hundred and sixty point three.
And even though I'm still decidedly behind all three of you,
I have won three consecutive weeks, I've had the highest
score and have chop down the lead considerably even though
(35:03):
I still have a ways to go. So it's getting
tight in our contest here. So it's Kid, myself, Bucky
and Ashley that is the draft order. And keep in
mind we have Penn State on by, USC on by,
Maryland on by, and Ohio State all on by. That's
a lot of players on by this week. It is
so Kid picks first. He is dropping Nick Singleton, the
(35:25):
running back for Penn State, and he is taking our
first Northwestern player I think ever drafted. Wow. Yeah, Caleb
Halamafe the running back, the starting running back for Northwestern,
the sophomore. I think he's like seventh in the Big
Ten in rushing so far this year. So Kid making
the decision, finally making an ad drop this week in
(35:45):
our Big Ten pickups. So I am going to take
the roll of the dice because I don't want to
lose Carnell Tape. But I think the way that the
pickups work that I don't have to. I can pick
them back up again next week. We shall see, but
I can't really afford any z Rose, So I'm gonna
go ahead and drop Carnell Tate and I'm going to
pick up Indiana wide receiver Omar Cooper Junior. That's a
(36:08):
good pick up, all right, Bucky, I don't know he
has not wade in. I think he was trying to
keep it secret if yes Wednesday, and now he's forgotten
to tell us who he's going to take. So Ashley,
I'd say go ahead and pick away.
Speaker 4 (36:21):
Okay.
Speaker 5 (36:21):
I don't really love any choices that I've got to
make here, but I'm going to go to Nebraska. Naziah Hunter,
I'm gonna drop.
Speaker 4 (36:32):
Oh, I'm gonna drop.
Speaker 2 (36:35):
Jordan.
Speaker 4 (36:36):
Yeah, Jordan, thank you. I couldn't remember his name. Waymon
George Raymond.
Speaker 2 (36:39):
The running back for US Seed. Not only are they
on bye, he's injured. Yeah, and he might be benched
the way that that King Miller's been running the football
for them. All right. So Naziah Hunter, who's actually been
pretty dangerous for Nebraska here as of late, is going
to be the pick up and drop Jordan. I don't
think that's who Bucky would have picked up anyway. He's
(37:00):
got his eye on an Oregon duck. So I think
we're good, all right. So there you go. Enjoy the
Big ten weekend and again honks at eight thirty. Kickoff
from Montlake is at twelve thirty tomorrow, right here on
