Speaker 1 (00:15):
All right, seven o'clock hour, Chuck Buck and Ashley with
you here, and Greg Bell will be joining us in
about a minute and a half. Let me go through
your frost brewed corps like choose chill headlines here on
this football Baseball Friday, and we will start with the Mariners.
We know they'll face the Detroit Tigers. We also know
they will face them Saturday night at five thirty eight
(00:36):
in the evening game one of the Divisional Round of
the Major League Baseball Playoffs. It's been a long week
of waiting, but the Mariners are set to face the
Detroit Tigers best of five series to determine who goes
on to the American League Championship Series. Still don't know
who's going to be pitching for either team, but we
should have those announcements today, plus the Mariners roster decisions
(01:00):
as well. The Yankees got in they defeated Boston yesterday.
The Cubs advance, the Dodgers and Phillies were already there.
So your lineup for tomorrow, your schedule, It'll be Cubs
Brewers at eleven am, then it'll be Yankees Red Sox
at one. Assume me Yankees, Blue Jays, at one. Then
it'll be Dodgers Phillies at three thirty, and then it'll
(01:20):
be Tigers Mariners at five thirty. That's how that cookie
will crumble. College football Husky's taking on the Maryland Terrapins
at twelve thirty. On Saturday, we are going to have
the Hanks out of Tom's watch bar, all the sports,
all the time. That'll start at eight thirty, and so
the Huskies Maryland get a very busy Saturday started round
(01:41):
here around these yer parts. That will also include that
baseball game and a seven to thirty match time for
Sounders Timbers on Saturday. The Kraken will start in six days.
The WNBA Finals start tonight at five, and of course
we will have NFL football here this weekend as well
as the Seahawks giver need to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Uh,
(02:02):
the start time will remain the same at one oh five,
and then the Mariners will play at five o'clock on
Sunday night, game two of the Divisional round of the playoffs.
So there's a lot going on, I mean, there is
too much going on. Let's isolate one thing at a time.
Let's talk Seahawks football with Greg Bell.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
I'll be out there tomorrow covering it for the News Tribune,
writing the game story. Nice five o'clock start, hopes, Yeah,
looking for and I'll run over Sunday after the Seahawks
and catch the end of it.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
I goes, you're like Dion primetime Sanders, you really are writing.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
Do you remember that when he flew from an NFL
game to Pittsburgh for Atlantic I think it was a
clincher if I'm not mistaken. Yeah, the same day he played,
he played in Miami, returned, I think he returned to
punt for a touchdown, got on a private jet, flew
to Pittsburgh and played a night game for the Braves
against the Pirates in the.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
You l Yeah, and that's what I'll go into training
camp because that was a rookie season. It was his
first training camp and so he was playing baseball for
the Brave, so he didn't go to training camp at all.
He just showed up in Atlanta to return punts and kickoffs,
and his first time he touched the football.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
He went for a touchdown. He's pretty easy. That's the
easy game.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
That's the Sanders for you right there. Well, it's gonna
be fun this weekend, and are you are you kind
of glad? Are the Seahawks glad that they didn't have
to worry about a schedule change for Sunday?
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Well, it was only looking like an hour hour and
a half difference, probably two thirty if it would have
been an earlier start. It wasn't gonna be a gigantic deal.
But yeah, I mean everything status quo is more comfortable
for everybody, but not a huge, huge deal at this point. Seriously,
And Mike McDonald said so many words, but the feeling
I would take around town is whatever for the Mariners playoffs,
(03:52):
We'll do whatever you need to do. Clear the decks.
Speaker 4 (03:54):
Yeah, well, I mean heading into this thing, I mean,
how are they feeling? It looks like on and obviously
there's not played on paper that they're healthier, that they're
getting back to health with a couple of guys coming back,
whereas the Buccaneers are not. So how are they feeling?
Speaker 2 (04:10):
Buck here's a lengthy, lengthy injury list, you're right, including
some linemen including Bucky Irving. We've talked all week about him.
And then how I feel that could change the whole game,
and how Seattle defends Baker Mayfield. If they're not a
threat to run, I will caveat it again. Never shot
a White had one of only three one hundred yard
rushing days against a much different Seahork defense in Munich
(04:32):
twenty twenty two. But Bucky Irving's status, he's in a
walking boot this week. If he can't play, we'll find
that out this afternoon. You would think that would make
the Buccaneers almost entirely dependent on Baker Mayfield, not just growing,
but running as well. And one dimensional offenses have struggled
in this year and a half under Mike McDonald against
the Seahawks defense. The Seahawks defense is good right now
(04:56):
this week, have been missing three starters. Devin Witherson hasn't
practic this Bruce knee, that to me seems a little
more like a maintenance thing that he'll probably play again.
He played eight days ago in Arizona. Julian Love, the
Pro Bowls safety, hasn't practiced. He's been doing a hamstring
maintenance for the last two weeks. He played last week.
(05:17):
I'd expect he'd probably be able to play. The Marcus
Lawrence maybe not. The starting defensive tackle has been out
of practice all week, so there's if he statuses on
three starters. If Witherspoon can't play, Tariq Wollan probably will play.
But if Witherspoon plays as I expect him to, the Seahawks,
(05:37):
the defense seems to be hedging toward perhaps Darien Kendrick
getting more playing time as an inside nickel and putting
Devin Witherspen out on the slot. There's been talk about
that this week, and that would be Woolan as the
odd man out. Because McDonald loves Josh Job, I mean
loves him. He loves how he attacks the ball, he
loves how he tackles, makes plays, just consistency his work.
(06:00):
He really likes Josh Jobs. So Darren Kendrick has earned
more time. We'll see if he gets At Sunday.
Speaker 1 (06:06):
Greg Bell, it's with us our Seahawks inside. You can
follow him at GBL Seattle on X and of course
Thenewstribune dot com, where you not only get Seahawks coverage
this weekend, you're going to get Mariner's coverage as well
from Greg Bell. So make sure you're double dipping there
at the Newstribune dot com. You know, it seems like
everybody arrived at the conclusion. And when I say everybody,
(06:26):
everybody that we've talked to, from you to Hugh too,
even us, we even we saw that Vidavea could be
a problem on Sunday against the maybe the question mark
of the team, that interior offensive line. So how do
you how do you?
Speaker 2 (06:43):
So?
Speaker 1 (06:43):
I think it's probably obvious to coach McDonald too, So
what do you think the game plan is for not
letting him blow up the offense on Sunday?
Speaker 2 (06:54):
I would think they're going to try to double team
him inside. I mean, in general terms, it's five against
four on the offensive line and interior play, and I
would think they're going to devote Sundell and or Bradford
and or Gray Zabel from left guard to right guard
on THEA. I talked to Zabel yesterday and he says, man,
(07:15):
this guy's a good player. Of course, he's never played him,
he's a rookie, but he started watching on film. He's
just so fast. He's watched him before when he was
in college, admiring his game, and he said, he's just
so Vea is so fast for being three hundred plus pounds,
and that's the task. But that is Zabel's strength, getting
off the ball. I mentioned that if you just step
(07:36):
back and watch a Seahawks practice or even a game
for that matter, from the press box, and you just
watch five helmets come off the ball. For the Seahawks
offensive Zabel's is always the first one, always from since
he got here in May. That's going to come in
handy this week because the quickness off the snap on
top of his strength is what bea beats most guys
at So again, as I mentioned yesterday, if I'm the box,
(08:01):
I'd go to the weaker spot. I wouldn't go after Zabel.
I would slam via toward the right side of the
Seahawks offensive line and give it Anthony Branford's long day.
We'll say they do that, But if they do do that,
I would expect Jaylensendell to help. There a lot of
blocking down from the tackles, likely to come from A
Lucas on the right side and Charles Cross on the
left side to Vera. But you can't devote everybody to
(08:23):
him because they've still got defensive players behind him. That
this is an attacking, swarming defense much like Mike McDonald's,
and it's gonna test them. It's gonna test Seattle's willingness
and will power to run the ball, which they're really
trying to establish. They've yet to do it this season.
Speaker 4 (08:40):
Gee, I mean, just you know, through four games, their
stats show that they're pretty good against their run as well.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
How long Yeah, fourth and fifth in the league.
Speaker 4 (08:49):
Yeah, how long do you expect Kubiak and company and
McDonald two to go? And how much should they commit
to running the ball just to make sure that they're
keeping them honest even if it's not working.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
Well, we've seen that all so far four games, they're
going to do just that, So I would expect them
to do just that again on Sunday, bucket. And I've
told you all off season, preseason, they're gonna be times
that they're running the ball when it looks fruitless, and
they're doing it with intent to instill an attitude, a habit,
and tendencies that defenses have to honor the playing I
(09:23):
can't overstate it's as simple terms to say it, but
making a defense play you honestly is so important in
the NFL, but especially for this offensive line. We have
seen this, even in the newest iteration of this offensive line,
we have seen when they have to just drop back
and throw if they're down multiple scores, or they've just
abandoned the run. We've seen the results for Seattle in
(09:44):
the last ten years. It's helter skelter the quarterback. It
looks like you're playing on the playground running after the quarterback.
It's just everybody chasing after him like it's a jail break.
That's exactly what they don't want. And so when you
see them running on second and eight, or you see
them perhaps even running three plays and punt, that's why.
(10:05):
And that doesn't help the fans screaming, yelling why they're
doing that? Why we punting after three runs or two
runs on second and long. It's the long game that
McDonald is really interested in the process. He does its
lip service for coaches to say the process of a result,
but he lives it and he is China's still only
a year plus four games into his regime. He doesn't
(10:28):
see this as a week to week proposition. In his mind,
he's only thirty seven years old. He sees this is
a decade to decade proposition. He thinks he's gonna be
here for the longest time and he wants this process
to take root. So they're gonna run come hell high
water or getting stoned at the line of screamings they're
gonna run Tampa. It would appear is going to be
one of these games where it's gonna look ugly running
(10:49):
the ball times.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
Yeah, well, they better be able to run on Sunday.
That I know that you talk about it every week,
but I think they have to be able to run
on Sunday or I don't think Sam Donald can pass
them out of trouble, not against this defense. That's just mine.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
Well, here's the thing about this team and the way
McDonald's building it. He's trying to build it in a team.
If they get stopped in the run and have to throw,
and then a team takes away Donald, they can still
win with their defense. That's what McDonald wants to do.
I keep thinking of what Jake Bobo told me during
training camp. He said, Greg, this offense is just here
to make sure we don't screw it up so the
(11:25):
defense can go win the games. He's, yeah, of course,
you want to score thirty points a game, and then
may maybe times we have to do that. I have
to throw the ball more, but basically we want to
control the game enough to have field position and even
if we don't score, we get to midfield and make
them punt into their own end and have them done
because their defense is most times is not going to
give up ninety yard touchdown drives. That's the goal for
(11:46):
the offense is to go let the defense win the game.
This might be one of those weekends.
Speaker 1 (11:51):
I know we've asked you about this all week long,
but I think it's just a big storyline. And so
for those that may be hearing Greg for the first
time this week, nick emon Wori getting active here. I mean,
how many different places is he going to be to
Baker Mayfield's eye on a Sunday.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
At least five? I would think, Wow, you're gonna get
them full nick e men worry experience, what they intended
to do, what they did all training camp, what I
saw every day in practice in the summer. Now this
is basically his debut. As I mentioned, only played four
snaps of the opener before he got the high ankle sprain.
He hasn't played since. He's practiced full go all week,
(12:29):
and they played him at cover safety in the slot,
outside linebacker, deep safety, too high safety in the back.
In those four plays, three different positions. Suffice to say,
you're going to see him as the only linebacker next
to Ernest Jones at times, and you're going to see
him in the flat covering tight ends and running backs
as an outside eyebary. That's five different positions. That's at
(12:51):
least what you'll see him at. And then we'll begin
to see from here what he does beyond that. Do
they blitz him a lot? Do they fake blitz them?
Do they drop him the coverage? He's there, Kyle Hamilton,
they said at the night they drafted him, we're going
to start seeing more of that said, You're going to
see number three and Royal Blue throwbacks all over the
(13:11):
field and send it.
Speaker 4 (13:14):
How good are you feeling as far as front seven
or even more so, just the guys getting after the
passer that they're going to be able to disrupt what
Baker Mayfield has been looking like as of late, Man.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
Bucky, I think Baker Mayfield is better than Kyler Murray
at extending plays, running and HEARDing you. Murray can just
flat speed rush, get outside and be faster than you.
And a couple of the edge rushers for the Seahawks
learn that the Marcus Lawrence got hurt chasing Kyler Murray outside,
heard his thigh running outside trying to catch up to him.
Baker Mayfield will run you over. He goes straight upfield.
(13:49):
He's not so much lateral horizontal getting around you. He'll
just go and get twelve yards. And not to mention,
he's a better passer than Kyler mu So when he
extended Sten's plays, he'll still kill you throwing the ball
very accurately. He's a swashbuckling guy, something of a wild
card that does take risks. It's his personality, that's been
(14:12):
his mo That's why he's been with what it is
four teams and five whatever it is, and now he's
resurrected his career in Tampa Bay to get one hundred
million dollar contract, much like the career arc of Darnold.
I think Baker Mayfield's far more dangerous than last week's quarterback.
Probably the most dangerous. Well, it's not even a reach
to say in five games this is the most dangerous
quarterback they're going to play in terms of extending plays
(14:34):
and still killing you. Run are past. They got to
be disciplined. You hear that all the time. Rush discipline.
What does that mean. That means rush from outside in.
That means just don't go to the quarterback, but go
to a spot that is hemming him inside, so your
buddy inside can help pressure him as well. Leonard Williams,
for all the accolades he gets for his numbers, is
really good at knowing his teammates pass rush lanes, complimentary passers,
(15:00):
not just freelancing trying to go get himself rushing from
outside ind and oh, by the way, has eleven sacks
in the last eleven games. Letter Williams. Mike Bethal said
this week he thinks McDonald Williams should get a ton
more national love than he's getting. That guy dominates most games.
If you just watch to see how game along the
line of screamings through the binoculars or even on Naked
(15:22):
Eye on TV ninety nine, just rex dudes from outside
in and crashes tackles on top of guards, pushes tackles
into running backs, run over running backs that are trying
to block them. He's been all that in the bag
of chips since they traded from the Giants for him.
I wrote a story about him in the News Tribune
about how he remodeled his house that overlooks the Lake
(15:44):
Washington on the hill there behind the Seahorks headquarters, with
a bunch of recovery equipment, hyperbaric chambers, infrared sauna, hot
and cold tubs, massage tables, the whole nine. They all
do that. They have the money to do that. But
Williams thinks it really has helped his career because he
didn't embrace that until midway through it. He said, the
first half six dozen, six half years of his career
(16:07):
with the Giants and Jets, he just thought he was
a young guy, could do whatever he wanted. And now
that he's thirty plus, he's really embraced this self recovery
at home all right.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
Thirty seconds remaining what's the key to a Seahawks win
on Sunday?
Speaker 2 (16:24):
Containing Vidavea on the offensive line, not having him completely
wrecked the day. There aren't many times a nose tackle
can be capable of that, but against this team and
this offensive line, he is and Baker Mayfield, because it
looks like they're not going to have Bucky Irving in
the run game. Contain Baker Mayfield. Don't let him do
(16:44):
what he's done to resurrect his career, extend plays, run
for twelve yards, throw passes across the field, across his body.
It is going to be the Baker Mayfield experience on Sunday.
McDonald has in a short time here has a good
track record of taking away team's best assets. The best
asset for Tampa Bay on offense is Baker Mayfield.
Speaker 1 (17:05):
All right, awesome stuff, Thank you sir, Thank you all
week long. Enjoy your double dip over the weekend, and
we'll catch up on Monday morning.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
We will. We'll have a few things to talk about
on Monday, won't we enjoy the weekend, enjoy the Mariners
and Seahawks. Thanks all right, Greg.
Speaker 1 (17:19):
Bell our Seahawks insight of joining us right here on
Chucking Buck in the morning, Sports Radio ninety three point
three kJ R FM. Again, if you want to follow
Greg news at GML Seattle there on x or you
could also go to the actually nut or and you
can go to the News Tribune dot com and get
all of his Seahawks coverage there. Coming up next, we'll
play some factor fiction at seven thirty five. Plus we
(17:41):
hear from Rick Neuheisel before the college football weekend on
Sports Radio ninety three point three KJRFM Rank Factor fiction
coming your way at seven thirty five. It's my pick
today to close out the week, be listening for your
opportunity to win one thousand dollars in cash. Of course,
(18:03):
college football this weekend not as great as the last weekend,
but you don't get much better than that. But certainly
a lot of good games are going to be going
down Saturday. And Rick new Isel was with us earlier
this week on Tuesday talking about all of the big games,
including Virginia and Louisville. As the Cavaliers enter this week
(18:23):
ranked for the first time this season, and yet they're
touchdown underdogs against the Louisville Cardinals. I ass coach new
Isa what he makes of this game.
Speaker 5 (18:31):
By the way, Virginia ranked twenty fourth, Florida State ranked eighteenth. Yeah,
both with loss, you figure, you figure Florida State. The
Florida State victory was a huge one for Tony Elliott,
the head coach at Virginia. The Virginia Louisville game is
(18:53):
a absolute must watch game. I think it's going to
be fascinating to see the two quarterback. Chandler Morris is
the quarterback for Virginia. He's been kind of a you know,
travel around the country type of guy. He was going
to go to Arkansas, where his dad was a coach.
The dad gets fired, he goes to TCU, that doesn't
work out. He goes to North Texas. Then he gets
(19:17):
transfers to Virginia and he's having a great year. Miller
Moss was at FC he gets fence. Now he's at Louisville.
The two quarterbacks are going to be on display here.
I kind of like Louisville in the home setting, but
should be a.
Speaker 2 (19:35):
Whale of a game.
Speaker 1 (19:36):
You brought up Florida State. Now, there was a time
when I was younger, you were younger. I mean I
realized that they consider Michigan and Ohio State the greatest
rivalry in sports. But there was a time in my
youth where the only game you can only want to
watch one college football game on an entire season, you
(19:57):
watched Miami versus Florida State. I mean, that's just how
great those programs were once upon a time. And here
they are both ranked heading into this weekend. Miami may
bee special again. What do you think of three Miami
versus eighteen Florida State Saturday?
Speaker 5 (20:14):
Florida State is the number one offense in the country,
Miami is the number one defense in the ACC. Miami's
the number four offense in the ACC, and Florida State's
the number three defense in the ACC. This is a
great game, and the fact that Florida State's been bloodied
up a little bit by that loss at Virginia puts
(20:37):
a little heat on him. This is in Tallahassee. We
saw that crowd impact the game hugely against Alabama to
start the season. This to me is a monster, monster game,
like you I remember why right, So this is I
can't wait to watch it.
Speaker 2 (20:55):
But I'm going to call for the Seminoles to win
the game.
Speaker 1 (20:58):
Going for the Seminoles to win the game? Nice, all right?
Another ACC game that I wanted to bring up. Who's
having a worst time this year? Dabo Sweeney or Bill Belichick?
And who's it more important to win this game Saturday?
Speaker 5 (21:13):
They're both miserable. They're both miserable right now. But the
good news is Belichick used to being miserable. He's been
miserable his whole life, so he's way more comfortable. But
I like Davos teams to get off the mat. It's
been a bizarre year. I can't understand why they're struggling,
(21:36):
but the struggle bus isn't as bad as it is
in Chapel Bill. So I'm gonna go with Clemson in
that game and look for kay Klubnik to get back
on the right side of things.
Speaker 1 (21:46):
Rig new Isiol joins every Tuesday at nine o'clock. Also
joins us Softy and Fame every Thursday, and you will
hear his take on Maryland coming up on the Friday
OCHO at eight o'clock. Join the Husky Honks at Times
Watch Bar for an exclusive watch party Saturday Tomorrow against Maryland,
complete with three hundred and sixty degree viewing stadium surround sound,
(22:09):
giveaways and prizes. Softy in the Gang will be broadcasting
at the Corps Light Husky Honks Tailgate show from Tom's
Watch Bar starting at eight thirty AM. Kickoff for the
game is at twelve thirty and then you can join
them as well for the Husky postgame show as well.
Just steps from Climate Pledge Arena, Tom's watch Bar features
(22:30):
wall to wall screens, premium food, and signature beverages for
the ultimate game day experience of dog fans. Tom's Watch
Bar all the sports, all the time. Yeah, it's going
to be a busy couple of days around these here
parts is going to tell you that busy couple of days.
All right, let's play some factor fiction.
Speaker 3 (22:47):
What do you say?
Speaker 1 (22:48):
Where's that to go? Glad you're with us.
Speaker 6 (22:49):
It's your shot at our weekly thousand bucks and the
ten thousand dollars grand prize. It's factor fiction, probably presented
by Lucky Eagle, cause you knowing hotel where every day
feels lucky. Fact Or fiction is on Sports Radio ninety
three point three KJR FM.
Speaker 1 (23:10):
Well, I had a really strong feeling about a particular game,
but it got stolen from me at the very last
minute by Richard L.
Speaker 3 (23:18):
Fane.
Speaker 1 (23:19):
But you know what, I'm not gonna be thrown off
because I still have a really strong feeling about that
same game, and I think it's gonna be a low scoring, ugly,
sloppy affair. So I'm gonna go ahead and take the
over under. I can figure out my way around your
evil ways, Dick Fane. Do Yeah, I'm gonna go ahead
and take the under forty two between the Saints and
(23:43):
the Giants. I think Jackson Dart made a classic rookie
mistake by announcing before he plays an NFL team that
he's carrying a chip on his shoulder because the Saints
didn't draft him. Oh well, Jackson Dart, you're getting ready
for you second start. They've got film on you.
Speaker 2 (24:02):
Now.
Speaker 1 (24:03):
They're gonna make life miserable for you tomorrow. They were
gonna do that before. You've added a little extra sauce
to the recipe. So I think it's gonna be ugly.
I think it's gonna be low scoring. I think the
Saints are gonna come out on top and this one,
and I think it's going to be under forty two points.
So give me the under forty two total points between
(24:23):
the Giants and the Saints down in the Big Easy
on the Sunday morning. All right, if you agree with
that selection, what you're gonna do is you're gonna text
fact to four nine four five to one. If you
disagree with it, you're gonna text fiction to four nine
four five one. If you're right, we enter your name
into a drawing for one thousand dollars in cash provided
by Lucky Eagle Casino and hotel, where every day, every
(24:48):
day people get it lucky. So what you're gonna do then,
is if if once you get into the drawing, you've
got a shot at that thousand dollars. But you can
get into the drawing up to twenty times. Okay, so
every time we play, you play. If you get it right,
we put your name back in the drawing again. And
if you're playing for the first time, man, you can
win it in just one shot. I wouldn't recommend it.
(25:09):
You should play every time we play, but you can
win it in just one shot. That's the beauty of
fact or fiction. And if you play enough, you could
end up winning our ten thousand dollars jackpot. But you
have to get the most correct answers throughout the football
season by playing factor fiction. So here's your latest opportunity
to get into that thousand dollars drawing for the week
(25:30):
it is taking. I'm taking the under forty two total
points between the Giants and the Saints. If you agree
with that pick, go ahead and text fact to four
nine four or five to one. If you disagree with
the selection, text fiction to four nine four or five one.
Speaker 3 (25:44):
There you go, There you go.
Speaker 4 (25:46):
I mean you're taking if you want to win money, Yeah,
I mean, if you don't like money.
Speaker 3 (25:49):
Don't text in fact or fiction. I can't really tell
you which one you should text it.
Speaker 1 (25:54):
You don't like money, You're an idiot.
Speaker 3 (25:56):
It really is true.
Speaker 1 (25:58):
You know, money is ness.
Speaker 4 (26:00):
I mean, I don't want you to be married to money, like,
you know, rule your life things.
Speaker 3 (26:04):
Yeah, but it's helpful. It is a good tool to have.
Speaker 4 (26:07):
Is a great We're just giving you a thousand dollars
every week and then ten grand at the end of
the year, probably just texting a word.
Speaker 1 (26:14):
That's the key right there, is Like you work really
hard for all the money you do have. Why not
get some money that you didn't have to work that
hard for. I've met people that don't like ice cream.
I've never met anyone that didn't like a little extra money. Yeah,
no one's ever liked that.
Speaker 3 (26:29):
You've never spoken to those people again, have you?
Speaker 1 (26:32):
I don't need the extra free cash? Thanks, I'm good?
All right? Coming up next, a preview of our new
opponent for the weekend, the Detroit Tigers. It comes your
way next Sports Radio ninety three point three kJ r
f M. All right, we know it. We've got all
(27:04):
the information that we need for a series. The Mariners
will be in action tomorrow night in the Divisional round
of the Major League Baseball Playoffs. We got to skip
all that wild card stuff that the losers had to
go through, and now we face the Detroit Tigers tomorrow
night at five point thirty, game one of a five
(27:24):
game series in the Divisional round of the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (27:28):
Are you ready? I'm so ready.
Speaker 4 (27:30):
I think you are ready. I mean there's I'm excited,
and yet I'm very calm about it too, like there's anxious,
and I don't feel anxious. I don't feel like anxiety
about it. I feel like it's not to say that
I'm overly confident that I will guarantee we win this. Right,
I would never go there. It's just too much weird
(27:51):
stuff that happens in baseball. But I truly believe that
this team is set up for success. I believe the
pitching staff is rounded into shape. Even with Brian Wuby
and possibly on the shelf for this first series, I
think you still have enough firepower in your starters.
Speaker 3 (28:06):
I think you have enough firepower.
Speaker 4 (28:07):
You talked about the Caleb Ferguson difference and how he
could be an intricate part of how this whole thing
works out of now. They have two lefties against a
team that has a couple dangerous lefties that have heard
us in the past. I just think it comes down
to you've had this time off, and it can be
good or bad. I think it's good if you go,
we need a time off from all the travel and
(28:29):
just the one hundred and sixty two games, and yet
we're not taking a break. These guys after every single
celebration they had, which was bang, bang, bang three in
a row, every time they said we ain't done. They
have more work to do. Now, That's what everybody would say,
but I truly believe this team that's what they're feeling.
I don't think that they are content with just making
the playoffs and getting the number two seed and getting well,
(28:49):
we've automatically.
Speaker 3 (28:50):
Advanced to the second round. We're good.
Speaker 4 (28:52):
No, they have plans of doing big things and the
first step starts tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (28:56):
Well it starts.
Speaker 1 (28:56):
They're definitely not going to be content with waiting that
all that time and then coming out and playing like garbage.
Speaker 4 (29:02):
So I think they're ready, and I'm ready.
Speaker 1 (29:04):
I'm ready as well. I think the Tigers will be
ready to I mean this as we provide our Tigers preview.
I mean, this is a service we provided all during
the regular season, so we're certainly going to provide it
now that we know our postseason opponent. Detroit is a
team that was flirting with best record in the American
League for most of the season. They really carried that
(29:24):
momentum where they were the Cinderella Darling and ended up
making it into the playoffs themselves last year and nobody
saw that coming. They carried that momentum into the twenty
twenty five season and at one point, I mean for
a lot of the season, they had the best record
in the entire sport. So there's some talent here. There's
absolutely some talent for whatever reason. And at the end
(29:46):
of August, the Tigers just hit the skids and they
went nine and twenty two over a stretch of time,
and they blew a fifteen and a half game lead
against the Cleveland Guardians and didn't even win their own division.
But they did get into the playoffs with a couple
of clutch wins in their last four games during the
(30:07):
regular season, and they just won a playoff series. And
so from that standpoint, that sort of renews you. I mean,
At that point, who cares if we blew the division.
We just got past the team that took it from us,
and so that wipes away anything that we had before.
So it's probably we're not going to be facing a
(30:28):
team that's playing the kind of baseball that nearly cost
them a playoff spot. I think their confidence is renewed,
and make no mistake, there's a lot of talent on
this roster.
Speaker 3 (30:38):
I'm with you.
Speaker 4 (30:38):
I think it kind of renews it. I don't think
it completely wipes away how they've been playing. I think
that they because it's just how you've been playing, is
how you feel as an individual. Now, you go out
every day and you've got to kind of forget the past.
If it's been bad, forget the last game, forget the
last week, forget the last month, forget all of that
and go out and play. And yes, they did win
(30:59):
a series, and so they're feeling good. They got to
shoot champagne yesterday and and basically know that they get
to move on. Even after they got bumped out of
the division against these guys, they got to rebound and
reconcile things a little bit. But they they squeaked by
with their ace They squeaked by with a two to
one win in game one. Then they only score one
(31:20):
run in game two, and they had to be thinking, oh,
here we go again, really down to game three against
these guys who are playing better than us, and then
they get six runs yesterday and end up winning it
fairly handedly and move on. It's somewhat wiped away, but
it's not completely wiped away. That's where the start of
this bad Boy. That's where you get off to a
(31:41):
good start. You win that game one against these guys,
and you will plant that seed or you will be
feeding that that monster that's in the back of their
head of man weirdess. Not playing as good as we
used to. We started out so good, we're not playing
that well. And I think that our our pitching staff
is still lined up regardless of who they go one, two, three,
I think we're lined up to make it real difficult
on this offense for them, and we just got to
(32:02):
go out there. Hitters, got to go out and show
what they're capable of.
Speaker 2 (32:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (32:05):
Interesting storyline. I mean, we've been fascinated interested in finding
out who's going to be the game one starter, Game
two starter for the Mariners, for the Tigers. There's a
lot more going into this decision because they just had
to play a series, so they have a legit as like,
there's no getting around it. I mean, there are one
number one starters and then there are aces. This is
a legitimate, a syenteric schooble. He's probably going to win
(32:26):
his second Cy Young Award back to back seasons for
the Tigers. He went to Seattle, you for goodness sake,
and so this, But he also pitched three days ago.
He pitched on a Tuesday, So that's Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.
That's three days rest. I mean you always hear this.
Come playoff time, will they start him on three games rest?
(32:46):
Will they start their best, not at his best, potentially
just to try to get off to that good start
that Bucky's talking about. If not, you're probably you're looking
at a bullpen game. I would think your number four
starter than a bullpen game. No fear, because that's really
where the Tigers have been struggling most is with their
bullpen here down the stretch. So we shouldn't fear a
(33:09):
bullpen game if that presents itself at any time during
the course of this series. There are a couple of
offensive players that you do fear Kerry Carpenter's wore us out.
Riley Green is a legit all star, maybe on the
verge of becoming a superstar in this sport. But they've
both been struggling down the stretch and they both really
(33:30):
struggle against left handed pitching, and that's where the Ferguson
Spire thing could be a big factor. So, yes, this
is a legit playoff team that has probably renewed its
hopes by getting into the playoffs, surviving that scare winning
a close series against the team that edged them for
their division. But they don't stack up with us a
(33:52):
player for player on the roster, and yet everybody's dangerous
this time of the year.
Speaker 3 (33:58):
So there you go.
Speaker 1 (33:58):
Those are your Detroit TI. That's what we're going to face.
Starting tomorrow, we'll talk more about the series coming up
and our oho. That's right, Eight top stories of the
day coming your way next on Sports Radio ninety three
point three kJ RFM.
