Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's time to talk all things college football.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
It's just like the menu at Taco Time. You just
can't get enough. You just can't get enough.
Speaker 3 (00:08):
This is our weekly visit with Rick Neuheisel, brought to
you buy Taco.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Time, not those new Hidels. Used to be a moniker
of mine. I mean, just so you know.
Speaker 4 (00:16):
Now on your home for college football Saturdays, here's Nacho's
new Heidel on Sports Radio ninety three point three KJR FM.
Speaker 5 (00:25):
This is college football and I want you to get.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
It all over yourself.
Speaker 6 (00:31):
Well, good morning, live from Detroit, Michigan. It is the
Chucking Buck in the morning radio program.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
That's right.
Speaker 6 (00:36):
They've sent us on the road with the Mariners. Will
be here for Division Game number three, Division Game number four.
Postgame coverage coming your way as well with Bucky Jacobson
and myself.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
Good to be in Detroit.
Speaker 6 (00:48):
Never been to Detroit before, and so it's been fun
our first twelve hours or so here in Michigan, and
we're looking forward to being even more fun tonight and
tomorrow when we return home Thursday with a series win
against the Tigers. But more on Major League baseball, more
on the Mariners, coming up with the old Judge at
(01:09):
nine thirty every Tuesday, we talk college football with our
college football insider.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
That's right joining us again on the program.
Speaker 6 (01:17):
Jerry Neuheisel's dad is with us here on Chuck and Buffet.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
S Trewer words were never spoken. Srewer, words were never spoken.
I had needless to say.
Speaker 5 (01:30):
I had a good weekend. I had lots of fun
this weekend. Spent a lot of time answering a lot
of texts, well.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
Wishers and all that kind of fun.
Speaker 5 (01:39):
And for any parent out there, they know there's nothing
better than watching your child have fun on a big stage.
So that was a tremendous weekend for the new Hiels.
Speaker 6 (01:51):
Yeah, and I would think you were questioning whether or
not you're his real fathers. Then say, he looks exactly
like you, he talks exactly like you, and he thinks
exactly like you.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
You never have to worry about that at any.
Speaker 5 (02:01):
Point during your adult Well, I only have to apologize
those three things. That the acorn didn't fall far from
the tree on this one. He you know, it was fun.
He got the job on Tuesday night. I literally this
(02:22):
is how fast things work in the media. Bruce Feldman,
who's a terrific reporter, and the analyst for Fox texted
me that he asking me the question is Jerry the
play caller? And I looked at the text and I'm
saying what. So I called my son and he said,
they just told me three minutes ago and Bruce Feldman
(02:47):
already had it.
Speaker 7 (02:48):
Wow.
Speaker 5 (02:48):
And I said, okay, so what's the plan hare And
he goes, well, we can't do much new because they'd
already had their Tuesday practice.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
So I said, all right, well.
Speaker 5 (02:58):
Here's what I know about Penn State. You got to
block their defensive ends. You gotta, and you saw a
lot of ship help and all that kind of stuff.
And the next thing you know, they score their first
five drives of the second half. Coming into the game,
has lapsed in the big ten in offense. So it's
incredible what can happen when everybody pitches in. It's incredible
(03:19):
what happens when you give everybody a lot of hope.
And then it's incredible what can happen when you have
a really good quarterback. And Nico Iamaliava was a really
good quarterback on that Saturday.
Speaker 7 (03:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (03:31):
Yeah, to say the least, I mean ran for what
one hundred and twenty eight yards and a few touchdowns himself.
And yet I mean was their conversation. I mean you said, yeah, okay,
Penn State, you better block their pass rush, you better
block their dns. Did you guys have conversation after he
you got to talk to him and he was going
to take over the play calling duties. Did you guys
actually talk about you know, talk shop so to speak.
Speaker 5 (03:54):
Oh yeah, I mean whether or not he listened is debatable.
As dads will they offer advice? Uh and yeah, I
I we talked about uh and and and the one
thing that I am most proud of is that I
did I go, Now, when you win, here's what you say,
because they're going to want to talk about you, you
(04:16):
got to be talking about others. And to script, he
did that beautifuly. M.
Speaker 6 (04:23):
Yeah, Well he's been called Rick new Isiel's sun his
entire life, So for a little while, you're going to
be Jerry new Heisl's dad.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
So I want to just fine with it and just
fine with it. Yeah, it was. It was a great day.
And this is what makes college football.
Speaker 5 (04:37):
I mean, this hadn't happened in forty years. Guys, A
team that was zero to four beating a top ten team.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
Yeah yeah, and just a remarkable year round. I mean,
I mean yeah, I.
Speaker 6 (04:51):
Mean, I mean, that's face that the Bruins could not
have looked worse in their four games, and then all
of a sudden, it looks like the answer to their
prayers was Jerry new Heiseel.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
It was great to see.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
Here's what I need from the two of you. You
you need to make sure that.
Speaker 5 (05:07):
Michigan becomes uh this magic. So the Mariners need to
get this done in Michigan, and then here come the
Bruins to play in East Lansing this particular weekend, and
we'll see if we can have a sweep there.
Speaker 6 (05:22):
Well, we've been doing a lot of trash talk this
morning with Michigan, so maybe Bucky and I can intimidate
the Wolverines. So we do that make things easier for
for Jerry and the Bruins.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
Rick new Isel, it's the Spartans, all the Spartans. The
Wolverines are out here in the Los Angeles. Don't you
worry about them?
Speaker 1 (05:41):
Okay?
Speaker 6 (05:42):
The Spartan Yeah all right, my bad, My bad, my bad. Yeah,
U c l A at Michigan State. Well, we'll talk
trash about the Spartans too. Uh, it's Juggaboux Sports Radio
ninety three point three kh A r F M. Rick
new Isel joins us every Tuesday, and in case you
didn't know what we were talking about, his son Jerry
got promoted to the play caller with UCLA, who was
just off to a terrible start this year, and all
(06:05):
of a sudden they cannot be stopped by a top
ten team in the country, the Penn State and Nitney
Lyons pulled off the upset of the weekend, one of
the biggest upsets in the last few years. And Jerry
Newheisel has become the Prince of Los Angeles since that time,
and that is that's Rick's baby boy, so very proud moment.
If you saw the coverage, it was outstanding watching Rick
(06:28):
watch his UCLA Bruins guided by his son leading them
to victory.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
It was fun. It was a fun Saturday. I don't
know if you.
Speaker 6 (06:35):
Had time, being proud dad to see how Washington remarkably
came back in the fourth quarter against Maryland.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
But what did you catch of that?
Speaker 5 (06:45):
I My eyes were elsewhere, to be fair, but it's
a remarkable come from behind victory given the road woes
that Washington faced last year, and it sets it up
for this kind of magic to continue. I know they
have Rutgers this weekend on a Friday night, but when
(07:08):
you go on the road and playing a really good
Maryland team that I think it was undefeated going into
the game, and you find a way to come from
twenty back on their turf, that is a game changer
in terms of the locker room mentality and what's possible.
And for any concerns about the hangover effect of the
(07:30):
Ohio State loss, those are washed away and now really
everything's possible for Washington going forward, and I think that's exciting.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
I think their.
Speaker 5 (07:40):
Schedule is manageable, but it's exciting given where they are
and the talent of their skill coach.
Speaker 8 (07:50):
I mean, the idea of anything being bigger than what
you got to witness as a father, it would be silly.
And yet I still am curious where your mind went
as far as a storylines that just, uh, you know,
obviously pale in comparison to what we were talking about
to start this this interview, but I mean just across
college football, there were some other big storylines.
Speaker 7 (08:10):
What was hitting you the most?
Speaker 2 (08:12):
Well, the Alabama win.
Speaker 5 (08:14):
I think Kaylin de boor Washington fans are familiar with
Kaylan Uh.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
I think he's doing a remarkable job with this guy.
Speaker 5 (08:22):
Ty Simpson, the quarterback there, had another really good game.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
Uh, that's a really good.
Speaker 5 (08:27):
Vanderbilt team, had chances, you know, fumbled the ball in
the red zone, but still came away with a victory.
And now Alabama goes on the road to play at Missouri,
a team that you know, feels kind of like Robbie
Dangerfield a little disrespected, right.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (08:44):
As a matter of fact, Eli Drinkwitz, the head coach
of Missouri, was the only coach in the SEC that
said he wanted automatic qualifiers rather than you know, the
committee to pick the best teams for the college football playoff.
And the reason is he said, they picked us to
finish eleventh or twelfth this year in our own in
our own conference. And we've won twenty one games the
(09:05):
last two years. So Missouri gets, you know, one of
the top brands, if not the top brand in college
football in Alabama coming to what they call Como Columbia Missouri. Uh,
and here comes a really good Alabama offense against the
you know, a defense that's given up a lot in
the way of rushing yards over the last couple of weeks,
(09:28):
and Missouri's got the top running back in the country.
This kid, I'm at Henry was at Louisiana Monroe and
he's already got over seven hundred yards rushing. So this
is going to be a wild game in Como this weekend.
That one is spicy. But Kaylin and Ryan Grubb being
paired back together, you know they've got They've got some
(09:48):
hot dice right now.
Speaker 1 (09:49):
Offensively, Yeah, that quarterback can play too.
Speaker 6 (09:52):
Rick new Isiel is with US's segment brought to you
by Taco Time joins us every Tuesday to talk from
college football.
Speaker 1 (09:58):
Uh and you know it's kind of crazy.
Speaker 6 (10:00):
I mean, the Red River Rivalry is this weekend and
Oklahoma's ranked number six in the country.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
Texas, who started.
Speaker 6 (10:08):
Number one, is not ranked right now. I mean, and
yet I'm going all in on Texas. This is like
Super Bowl, Rose Bowl, This is everything on their season.
Arch madness is all at stake this weekend, and I
have a feeling they're going to respond. But how crazy
(10:28):
is it that we are going into Red River Rivalry
week with Texas and Penn State outside the top twenty
five looking in.
Speaker 5 (10:38):
It just goes to show you you don't get to
do it because people vote you in.
Speaker 2 (10:43):
You got to do it on the field. I'm shocked.
Speaker 5 (10:47):
But your sentiments right there are exactly the reason that
Texas is favored in this game. Texas is started as
a three and a half point favorite. I think it's
down to two and a half now. But they're favored
in this game. And I know a lot of people
are saying that because John McTeer, the quarterback who transferred
from Washington State to Oklahoma, had that hand surgery. But
(11:11):
I'm reading a lot of reports that he may be
available now.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
In what shape will he be in? Who knows.
Speaker 5 (11:19):
But Oklahoma has won games with that defense since Brent
Benable's arrived. The offense has been a little suspect until
our Buckle and Mattier joined forces there in Norman. This game,
to me is going to.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
Be really interesting.
Speaker 5 (11:35):
But you're right, this is kind of a stark last
chance that redemption, at least for twenty twenty five, given
the accolades that everybody was heaping on them in the preseason.
Speaker 8 (11:47):
Yeah, Rick, I mean, the most interesting game for me
this weekend is going to be Indiana coming to Austin standium.
Speaker 1 (11:53):
Surprise, surprise.
Speaker 8 (11:54):
I mean it's it's biggest game of the weekend, not
just because the best team's playing, but also because of
how well Indiana's playing.
Speaker 7 (12:01):
So how are you looking at that matchup?
Speaker 5 (12:04):
I think it's a great matchup. As a matter of fact,
I'm excited, Bucky. I'm going to Eugene. That's the CBS
game of the week, and they're sending our crew to
do the studio show from the.
Speaker 2 (12:14):
Sidelines, so I'll be there.
Speaker 5 (12:18):
I'd ask you for a place to go out, but
if I go out, I might be, you know, the
target of a rabid Duck fan.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
So I'm going to stay in.
Speaker 5 (12:27):
But the bottom line is this is going to be
a terrific game. Both these teams have top ten offenses,
Both these teams can run the ball, and both these
teams have quarterbacks that are rolling. As I just said,
hot Dice, Fernando Mendoza has been brilliant as the quarterback
(12:49):
at Indiana and Dante more is doing the same thing.
So this is going to come down to defense, which defense,
and when you start thinking about Oregon and that home crowd,
you got to lean the Ducks here just because it's
going to be confusing for Indiana in that environment.
Speaker 6 (13:09):
Rick new isil with us right here on Chuck and
Buck in the morning. We should ask you about you
dub Rutgers. What do you think happens in that one
Friday night.
Speaker 5 (13:18):
I think it's a good game, Athan calliac Manus, the
quarterback for Rutgers is really good. They're throwing the ball
more than they used to. They used to have that
running back Kyle Manong guy who's now in the NFL.
They don't run it very much. Against Iowa. They scored,
you know, a lot of points so that they can
(13:39):
handle a good defense. But if they try to throw
it as much as they've tried to throw it in
the past. I like the Huskies just because I think
there's more balance with the Huskies attack, and I think
the quarterback, as I've told you guys, is really special.
Speaker 6 (13:55):
All right, Well, before we close with the Taco Time
Pick of the Week, I just want to ask, I mean,
it just feels like it's a year where all of
these quarterbacks were getting all the hype for the Heisman.
The only one that really was playing well that we're
getting Heisman consideration broke his hand in John Mattier, but
nuss Meyer's been a disappointment a little bit in LSU.
(14:15):
Arch Manning obviously has been a disappointment at Texas Club.
Nick's been a disappointment at Clemson. Cellars has been hurt
and a little bit of a disappointment at South Carolina.
Speaker 1 (14:25):
Is there a chance with Miami.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
Right now, State and Drew Aller at Penn State.
Speaker 6 (14:30):
Yeah, add into the list as well. Is there a
chance with Miami pretty much being ranked number one in
the country. I mean, if they came out with a
poll right now for the playoff, they would be the number.
They've got the best schedule and they're undefeated and they
were led by their defense. Is there a chance that
this ruben Bain junior is going to win the Heisman?
Because that's something that we've been hearing in college football.
Speaker 5 (14:53):
Ruben Bain is the real deal, right, There's no question
there's another kid on that team. Is a door that
is is a tough out when you're trying to block
them as well. Listen, Miami has benefited. They've had some
big showcase games playing Florida, playing Florida State early in
(15:14):
the season. Those are you know, eyeball games that get
everybody's attention. I'm not sure I'm ready to anoint them
as the number one team in the land. I still
think Ohio State and the way that they're playing complimentary football.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
You know, they're not a top twenty five offense right now,
but they easily could be.
Speaker 5 (15:33):
They're just making sure they take it slow with their
young quarterback, and I think unfortunately some of these other
teams you talk about, those quarterbacks, they've got no running
game to go with them.
Speaker 2 (15:44):
And if you don't have.
Speaker 5 (15:45):
A running game, it gets really difficult to play that position,
especially if your offensive line has to protect on third
and long all day long. That becomes really hard. So
it's not surprising to me that this is that's what
we're seeing. It's not surprising that we're wrong because we
make all these assumptions about what a football team will look.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
Like just based on their name on their uniform.
Speaker 5 (16:09):
Especially in today's day and age, when so much is
happening with a roster between the end of a season
and the beginning of a new one. I mean, fifty
percent of the roster can change and no one blinks.
So it we're finding out who people are, but it's
it's come up in time in Texas and at Penn State,
(16:30):
no question about it.
Speaker 1 (16:31):
All right, Well, let's close with your Taco Tom pick
of the week. What do you got?
Speaker 5 (16:37):
I am going to take Missouri in an upset over Alabama.
Speaker 2 (16:43):
They're a slight underdog at home. I think this is.
Speaker 5 (16:46):
What Eli Drink which has been pointing to. And the
boat Probula thing is going.
Speaker 2 (16:52):
Well. He's a seventy six percent passer, the.
Speaker 5 (16:55):
Ability to run the ball, and I think it's just
gonna be a wonderful day in Como.
Speaker 6 (17:00):
All right, Well, do do your alma mater a real
big favor here, and even if your son takes the
car and stays out past curfew, don't ground him.
Speaker 1 (17:10):
They really need him right.
Speaker 5 (17:11):
Now, let's just hope. I'll just remind you of this.
My first game at UCLA as a head coach, we
beat Tennessee in overtime and came from behind to do it.
It was a wonderful victory. The next week we got
beat fifty nine to nothing by BYU. John Wooden wrote
(17:32):
me a note saying there will be good times and
they're bad. And I told the immedia after I said
I didn't realize they are gonna be week one and
week two.
Speaker 2 (17:40):
I just know that things happen in this game and you.
Speaker 5 (17:45):
Just do your best. And that's what I told the kid.
Just do your best and find a way to block
Michigan State and see how if you can get it
to the next week, because this stuff is fleeting, but
it's magical when you get kids that believe.
Speaker 1 (17:59):
Well, it was great stuff. It was really great stuff.
So thank you, We appreciate it. We'll talk to you
again next week.
Speaker 2 (18:06):
Appreciate you, guys.
Speaker 6 (18:07):
Take care all right, Rick new Eyes will joining us
right here on. I think we'll know pretty much right
there at game time because he'll have probably a pink
or blue bib on on his uniform and wearing pacifier shoes.
Speaker 8 (18:21):
Well, I'm just we're sure it's Josh Naylor senior, like
the one that has been playing for us, not like
his offspring. He's that guy, small strike zone, but probably.
Speaker 7 (18:30):
Can't hit yet.
Speaker 9 (18:31):
Yeah, probably can't hit yet. It just says Nayler first base.
So I'm gonna.
Speaker 6 (18:35):
Okay, all right, Well, lucky lucky there, Josh has cracked
the lineup, and we're going to hold a grudge.
Speaker 1 (18:43):
Against him for leaving for an.
Speaker 10 (18:45):
All day Nope, nope, nope, no grudges, no grudges.
Speaker 1 (18:50):
All right.
Speaker 6 (18:50):
The old Judge stops by next for a Mariner's Detroit
edition Sports Radio ninety three point three kJ RFL and
I don't believe you were invited, your honor.
Speaker 7 (19:01):
No, I most certainly was invited.
Speaker 1 (19:03):
All oh.
Speaker 8 (19:04):
Oh, me and my forty eight predecessors, my great great
great great grandfathers that have all been named Cornelius. They
day two were Mariner fans. They've passed that down. And
so I'm doing some court work on the road.
Speaker 9 (19:20):
Okay, so you got to all going I didn't.
Speaker 1 (19:24):
Yeah, fair, Yeah, yeah, Glad that worked out for you, Judge.
It's good to be with you. We're hitting Tommy's tonight
after the game's over, So if.
Speaker 8 (19:31):
You want to join us over there, I'll be there.
I'll play we'll play a game Skunk or Skunk. It's
something you wouldn't Oh, maybe you've heard about it.
Speaker 1 (19:40):
I do know that game. I'm sers you're familiar with it.
Speaker 6 (19:43):
All right, Well, the old Judge has made the trip
here along with us, and he wasn't even sponsored by
Snowquaalm Casino and hotel we were, but here we are
in Detroit, so we might as well do an Old
Judge Detroit Mariners edition. Right, Yes, I think, all right, well,
let's let's get it done. Here's how it works. I'm
gonna bring up a topic, Ashley, and I will discuss
(20:05):
it when the old Judge has heard enough. He didn't
bring his gavel with him on his road trip, but
he'll figure.
Speaker 7 (20:11):
Out a way. Gabble gavel gavel.
Speaker 6 (20:12):
There you go, and then whatever the old Judge says goes.
Speaker 1 (20:16):
All right. Here we go.
Speaker 6 (20:18):
First one, let's get it started, and we'll start with
the news of Josh Naylor. He is in the lineup tonight.
The Mariners lineup will be it'll be a ros Arena, Raleigh, Rodriguez, Polanco, Naylor, Suarez, Canzone, Roblaze,
and Crawford. Those are the starting nine, four to the m.
So we were wondering if Josh Naylor would be there.
Speaker 1 (20:39):
He is there. And here's your first question.
Speaker 6 (20:42):
Josh Naylor's new dad's strength will result in at least
one home run tonight.
Speaker 10 (20:47):
Ashley, Yes, yeah, new dad's always I mean, now he's
got well we assume that she's had the baby.
Speaker 9 (20:53):
Maybe he just went to check on her.
Speaker 10 (20:55):
I don't know, but either way, his mind must be
at ease or he wouldn't be with the team right now.
So he's got that off his back and he's just
focused on making his child and his wife proud and
helping his team.
Speaker 6 (21:07):
All right, So she's saying, at least one home run
from Josh Naylor, I'm going to say, no.
Speaker 7 (21:14):
Gabble, gabble, shut your mouth.
Speaker 8 (21:19):
He went and just minimum hugged his baby bump on
his beautiful wife, and that will give him power.
Speaker 7 (21:27):
You gavel, gavel. You don't say no out of my courtroom.
Speaker 10 (21:31):
Oh yeah, there you go, judge and tell her I'm standing.
Speaker 7 (21:35):
You'd like to state your case.
Speaker 6 (21:38):
I I just think Randy Rosereina is going to hit
two home runs tonight, and so I'm like, I didn't
want to be greedy, So I'm like, Okay, Josh's gonna
be a little tired, he's not gonna make any errors,
and he's gonna get a hit.
Speaker 1 (21:50):
Okay, maybe it's a little too much to expect him.
That's fair. Use his new dad's strength to this early. Okay,
all right, let's go to item number two.
Speaker 6 (22:00):
Item number two on our list The single most surprising
thing I've learned about Detroit is that their food of
choice is Coney Island food.
Speaker 9 (22:10):
Yeah, that's weird.
Speaker 10 (22:11):
I didn't get that, Like, so you just don't even
have your own food because I always here about Detroit
style pizza. Why they should be spouting that from the rooftops.
Speaker 1 (22:18):
Yeah, but yeah, I hear you.
Speaker 6 (22:20):
I think they are known for the pizza, but there's
usually everybody's kind of known for their pizza.
Speaker 1 (22:24):
Even Saint Louis has a pizza style that they use.
Speaker 6 (22:28):
But I didn't expect their food of choice to be
the food of choice of another city.
Speaker 1 (22:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (22:37):
Yeah, Coney Island is in Brooklyn, for goodness sake. So
I'm floored by this.
Speaker 8 (22:42):
Gabble gall gavel gabble, gabble. No, it's odd, and you
know what, we came here, I think with a pre
like I did. Anyways, Like I just kind of thought
Detroit's gonna be hard, come to find out.
Speaker 1 (22:56):
Very nice people, very nice people, so just want chili
on everything.
Speaker 7 (23:00):
It's wonderful.
Speaker 8 (23:01):
And yet, Okay, we're gonna give you a little bit
of criticism, real criticism. Nice people, find your own thing.
Cony Island does not come on and then you bicker
and argue about whether it's this one or that one.
It's a hot dog with chili on it. Come on,
that mean fits he be better? Okay, because I agree
there's something different about the pizza.
Speaker 7 (23:22):
But you're right.
Speaker 8 (23:23):
Everybody has their own style. Chicago has their Saint Luis
said has theirs. I mean, I guess there's I'm gonna
try it. Yeah, but and maybe I'll put chili and
cheese on it. I don't know, chili and cheese.
Speaker 1 (23:34):
And then I'm gonna put chili and cheese on it.
Speaker 8 (23:36):
Oh, that's a great idea.
Speaker 7 (23:40):
A bowl of chili and cheese. Please, chili and cheese
on top.
Speaker 1 (23:45):
I want to immerse myself in the culture idea. All right.
Number three. Crazy as it sounds, gabees fire is going
to end up being the key to this series, isn't he.
Speaker 10 (23:56):
Well, so I was listening and I'm trying to remember
who I heard talking about this, but they were sucking nine.
Well it was it was different because I have heard
you guys talk about it, but it was somebody else
who was saying, like kind of questioning like, well, how
did we know Gabe Spire was going to be the
key to this series, and it sure, I mean, so far,
it sure seems like he's on his way to being
the key in this series. So I would expect that
(24:18):
to continue. I wouldn't expect anything different in games three
and four.
Speaker 6 (24:21):
It felt like not going to him was the key
in game one, and it felt like going to him
was the key in Game two. And then here we
go for Game three. Detroit's lineup, they've they've shaken.
Speaker 1 (24:31):
Up a little bit.
Speaker 6 (24:32):
I wondered if they were going to put Carpenter and
Green back to back again.
Speaker 1 (24:35):
They have not.
Speaker 6 (24:36):
They have Carpenter in the leadoff spot, They've got Cold
Keith in the three spot, and they have Riley Green
in the four spot. So three of their four top
hitters all left handed. It's like, are you trying to set.
Speaker 1 (24:47):
It up for Gabe Spire to be the key to
this series. I think he's going to be the key
of the series.
Speaker 7 (24:50):
Gravel Gavel, Gavel, Gavel Gavel.
Speaker 8 (24:53):
He most certainly is going to be one of the
biggest keys. There's multiple things that are going to contribute
to whether or not we win this bad Boy or
lose this back Boy. But I think he is Kerry
Carpenter just first and foremost, Like you know, that's your
your public enemy number one. And part of the reason
isn't just because he's kind of killed us and he
hit one that changed the course of the first game
(25:13):
of the series, but it's he's on everything, and there's
things that you can read into. There was a couple
of pitches where when I think maybe Brash had struck
him out. It was a pitch down ninety eight milllin
hour fastball. He got to the bottom half, fouled it off,
actually making too good of a swing, if you will,
Like he was on time, just was fighting to the
bottom half and got too far underneath it and fouled
(25:35):
it straight back. He's scary going up against the right
handed guy at this point in time because he's locked in.
He kind of I think he has that focus and
he's feeling it a little bit. And then yet Gabe
Spires got him once and he's gonna have to be
He's gonna be called upon to get him again. Not
just him, but those other guys are speaking of.
Speaker 6 (25:50):
And Dan Wilson know this, Go to Spire first, don't
do the go to Ferguson first, to save Spire for
later in the game, do what you did on Sunday.
Go to him first. Force aj Hench into the position
of do I need to take out my two best
hitters because they can't hit Gabe Spire force that hand,
(26:10):
either force them into facing a guy they don't match
up well against, or force Hench into taking them out
of the game, and then they're without them for the
rest of the contest.
Speaker 1 (26:20):
And you can go with your righty.
Speaker 6 (26:21):
So if Spires the first lefty every game that should
come into the game.
Speaker 1 (26:27):
To replace your starter. Yea, that yeah, yeah, all right.
Speaker 6 (26:31):
Next one the Lions, it turns out, are the Mariners.
Barry Sanders is Ken Griffy Junior. Their pain is our pain.
Calvin Johnson is each Row and both are going to
win World Championships this year.
Speaker 10 (26:46):
I would say I I the Lions might be more
cursed because it seems like even well though maybe more
like that twenty one team when they're the best, then
all of a sudden they falter. But my problem is
I don't care about the Lions. I don't care if
they win. I mean, I like them, they're fine, but
all I'm focused on is the Mariners. So if one
has to be sacrificed for the other. Sorry Lions.
Speaker 6 (27:08):
Well sure, I mean, yeah, we're going to take that approach,
But it kind of feels like a pretty similar story.
Neither has been to the championship game, neither has obviously
won the championship game. They both had good moments, they
both had outstanding players throughout their history, and both look
primed this year to really make a run at this
(27:28):
gavel gavel gabble.
Speaker 8 (27:30):
I see the correlation, and I mean it's been There
was a long time where I felt bad for Detroit fans,
right the bags over their heads, and it was just horrible.
I'm going zero to sixteen one year, and yet now
they've found themselves as a contender and legitimate, you know,
somebody that you could argue whether or not they're the
best team, and then they've fallen short. I most certainly
(27:52):
see the parallels to that and the Seattle Mariners. And so,
I mean, I have one team that I root for,
and it's hard for me to really even pick a
second team. It's like the next team that I would
cheer for is ways down the list. But I think
the Tigers are the not the Tigers, the Tigers. Yeah,
you guys, suck and I'll never cheer for you. But
the Lions is a team that makes it kind of
(28:12):
easy to cheer for because you kind of hope that
they get over that hump because they've deserved to get there.
So yeah, I'm down with both of them win into
this year.
Speaker 1 (28:19):
All right, Last one quickly.
Speaker 6 (28:21):
In our Detroit Old Judge series, Bucky's mom would still
to this day leave Dad tomorrow for magnum p I.
Speaker 1 (28:28):
Oh yeah, gabble gable for sure.
Speaker 8 (28:31):
Sorry, Dad, Uh, it's just there's there was an uncomfortable
moment after uncomfortable moment every Tuesday or whatever day was
it that came on. My mom was very kind of
very nice and she'd be shut up, get out of
the way of the TV because of that mustache. She
probably loves this Mariners teamle gabblevel for sure.
Speaker 1 (28:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (28:54):
One last thing to close out the show. Next Sports
Radio ninety three point three kJ r f M my
final segment here from day number one in Detroit.
Speaker 1 (29:12):
Great to be here.
Speaker 6 (29:13):
Thank you very much to iHeart Detroit and all of
your terrific co workers, even though they're going down to night.
Speaker 1 (29:19):
Yeah yeah, but you've been very nice.
Speaker 6 (29:21):
To us and we very appreciate the hospitality and the
kindness every time that we see you.
Speaker 1 (29:27):
That being said, you're going.
Speaker 8 (29:28):
Down there, Yeah, and I will mistake your kindness is weakness,
at least for a moment.
Speaker 1 (29:32):
Oh yeah, maybe it changes. You're right.
Speaker 6 (29:34):
Maybe they are trying to lull us into a false
sense of security and then they just hit us like
in the back of the head with shovels tomorrow on
our way out.
Speaker 7 (29:41):
Oh yeah, we definitely don't want that.
Speaker 1 (29:43):
I don't want that.
Speaker 8 (29:44):
I'm probably just still keep my head on a swivel. Yeah,
while we've ran into all nice detroiters, I know, there's
a couple of turns out there.
Speaker 1 (29:51):
Yeah, you're wonderful people. We still don't trust you. All right,
one last thing, let's go around the room, Ashley. What
do you got?
Speaker 9 (29:57):
Oh?
Speaker 10 (29:57):
I just wanted to say a quick happy birthday to
my a little dumper.
Speaker 9 (30:01):
It is Palmer's eleventh birthday today, eleven. Yeah, it's terrifying.
Speaker 1 (30:06):
Wow. Yeah, happy birthday.
Speaker 9 (30:09):
Yeah, So that's all I just wanted to get at.
Speaker 1 (30:13):
That's it where she grows up and your gros.
Speaker 10 (30:15):
No, she really loves having her birthday during Calloween, So
it all works out for.
Speaker 1 (30:21):
She's gonna have a Calloween themed birthday party tonight. We're
all her friends.
Speaker 9 (30:24):
Tonight, We're just gonna do a family dinner. Her birthday
party won't be for a couple.
Speaker 10 (30:27):
Of weeks because of softball conflicts, but yeah, tonight, just
a family thing.
Speaker 6 (30:33):
Got a little dumper, big Dumper, and Bucky find out
found out for the first time this morning.
Speaker 1 (30:38):
I'm quick dumber. Oh yeah, yeah, that is your new name.
Speaker 9 (30:42):
It might have been too much information on the dumper.
Speaker 6 (30:44):
Fronting fast, right, Bucky, what do you got for your
one last thing?
Speaker 8 (30:50):
I kind of have I felt bad this morning about
the at least We're not Detroit song. I've just kind
of felt like maybe that was just out of place,
out of line, right, I mean Cleveland. Yeah, I mean
it's like, come on, Cleveland. It was the Cleveland Tourism
Bureau that did that. Yeah, I mean, Cleveland, You're not good.
But I don't know why you got to throw Detroit
(31:11):
under the bus. It seems wonderful at this point if
it's hues from here. Eminem gave me your head.
Speaker 1 (31:18):
You're here, Yes, we're not the true Yeah.
Speaker 10 (31:22):
I thought about it the other day too, and I
felt like it was too mean to play play it.
When you play in Cleveland, you can't just play it
to diss on Detroit.
Speaker 1 (31:30):
No, I think you should play it.
Speaker 9 (31:31):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, maybe tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (31:34):
We got an axtra grind with these people. Even though
they're awesome, Yeah, very nice people.
Speaker 7 (31:38):
I want to be losers.
Speaker 1 (31:40):
Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 6 (31:43):
All right, Well, yeah, here we go. We're getting ready
for game number three. We got the lineups out. It'll
be one o'clock, which keeps throwing me all four o'clock.
Now I'm staring it's almost one o'clock. I just had
a little panic, like, oh my gosh, the game's about
this part. Yeah, but one o'clock back home, four o'clock here,
so we're three hours away, a little three hours and
(32:04):
change from the very first pitch. I just feel good.
I feel good about this evening. I'm feeling like five
to six two. Maybe I think Naylor gets a big hit.
I think a Rose Arena has a big night, and
I think Logan does Logan things to earned runs over
six innings and then you hand it over to Gabe Spire,
the star of the team. Uh, and then Brash and
(32:26):
Munios and we get ready to possibly close it out tomorrow.
Speaker 7 (32:29):
I'm down with that. I like that.
Speaker 8 (32:31):
I like that outline of how you have things going.
I can see it going that way. Possibly. I would
also be really happy with an eleven to one victory.
Speaker 1 (32:40):
Okay, I'll be happy with a two to one.
Speaker 9 (32:43):
Anything that ends in victory for us.
Speaker 1 (32:45):
This is good.
Speaker 9 (32:46):
Good with me.
Speaker 7 (32:47):
Yeah, I want to follow.
Speaker 1 (32:49):
Yeah, even if they forfeited normally, I don't like that.
Speaker 6 (32:52):
I don't feel good it be okay with it, though,
if they just decided today that, you know what, we
have some conflicts. We can't feel the team of nine.
A lot of guys, you know, their parents can't get
them there. So we've had an issue with this all
season long.
Speaker 7 (33:07):
The short post postgame show.
Speaker 1 (33:09):
So we can either play with seven or we can
just forfeit. Yeah, okay, we'll take it.
Speaker 7 (33:14):
We'll take it. See you tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (33:17):
Maybe maybe you can get your food together. All right, Well,
it should be fun. We'll be back. We'll be on
the air tonight in some form or fashion.
Speaker 6 (33:28):
