where you say, we keep it right here, He's a guy.
The answer to the trivia question the last radio interview
(01:24):
that Jason Bottrell Box ever gave before his first official
game is the GM or.
Speaker 5 (01:30):
The crack will be the softiandiction.
Speaker 7 (01:32):
I'm sure he'll remember HNR about the memorable moment. This
is exciting, it's exciting. How do you feel You're nervous
for this or you just excited? Let's get let's get
it going, Let's get going. I'm tired of talking about
this right Well.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
Look, I mean, Jason, I don't know how much you
read about opinions of your hockey team, the writers, the pundits,
all that stuff. If you go through the internet and
you type in like cracking preseason predictions, Yep, there's not
a lot of people that think the club is going
to do much in twenty twenty four, twenty five or
twenty five, twenty six.
Speaker 5 (02:03):
Sorry, why are they wrong?
Speaker 3 (02:04):
Why is everybody wrong potentially about this crack and hockey team.
Speaker 5 (02:08):
Then we're gonna see starting tonight.
Speaker 7 (02:10):
Well, at the end of the day, we can't be
sitting here and bostful and just say on things. But hey,
we have a lot of confidence within our own locker
room right now. And why we're excited about coming out
here is I think the guys have come into camp
in an amazing shape.
Speaker 4 (02:22):
They took it to heart the last couple of years.
I know they're driven here.
Speaker 7 (02:26):
And what what got us really excited is not only
the veteran players came in an amazing shape, our young
players have really taken a step from their conditioning standpoint
and strength standpoint.
Speaker 4 (02:34):
So look, it's a it's a tough league.
Speaker 7 (02:37):
It's it's it's gonna be a grind for us, specially
in this Olympic year with a condemned schedule. Yeah, but
we're excited to get things going here and stuff. And
there's such a buzz in the city here right now,
obviously with football season going on, baseball playoffs, Hey, we
want to join the party too.
Speaker 5 (02:50):
I love it.
Speaker 8 (02:50):
Why is Lane Lambert the right fit for you, guys?
I think you know what.
Speaker 7 (02:54):
He has an intensity, he has a he's won in
this league and in different spots. He has connection with
with our players, and to me, he's delivered so far
in the preseason. I've loved our the intensity of our
practices or compete, our battle level in practices. I've loved
our preseason games. There's a focus on implementing a system,
(03:15):
and then the next day when things don't go maybe perfect,
what are the solutions, How are we working with younger players,
utilizing his entire staff? From that perspective, so, nope, real
excited to get things going. And hey, it's going to
be a challenge right against a coach here in Joel
Quinnville who has an amazing record and stuff. From that standpoint,
so well, good challenge for Lane right off the bat.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
Here, Well, there are people that are finding out about
who you are for the first time. Right, let's be honest,
this first time we've had a chance to talk. Hope,
we wanted many, by the way, but how are you
different than Ron Francis. I mean, obviously you'll lean on
him a little bit, I'm certain, But how are you
different and what do you bring to the table?
Speaker 7 (03:51):
Well, to begin with them, not a Hall of Famer,
so that's a little different from at that point and
stuff there. Maybe one day is an executive, but that's
you know, Look, that's that's how we've complimented each other.
I think over the years very well. And look, he
has a different playing background than I have. He has
a different management background. From my standpoint, right when we
watch a game, he sees different things that I see.
(04:12):
I think that combination, that communication that we have, you know,
it's going to be perfect from a standpoint of hopefully
two people going through things. You know, working with Lane
just makes our organization that much stronger.
Speaker 4 (04:24):
What do you learn.
Speaker 6 (04:25):
From your three years in Buffalo that'll prepare you for
this job right now?
Speaker 7 (04:29):
Well, at the end of the day, like you learn
from any experience, it was I love my time at Buffalo.
It was a great opportunity to be a young executive,
to become a general manager. There are some things that
we did from a player development standpoint, making trades that
I was very proud of. Obviously, we didn't win enough
hockey games, and that's something they have to carry over,
but just talking about building a staff communication with the staff,
how to manage up to your ownership group, what you
(04:52):
have to do, and not only discussing with other agents.
But I think a big part of the job is
just interacting with our general managers. Those relationships that I
built in those three years that now helps me out
a lot more and stuff in this situation here now
and when I was a GM in Buffalo as I
was a younger GM there at that time. Now, it's ay,
I still have those relationships with the gms that are
still in the league. Plus a lot of these gotten
(05:14):
new new gms have sort of come up or closer
to my age group and guys that I have relationships,
whether it's being an assistant GM, seeing them on the
road scouting, or played against them back in the day.
Speaker 3 (05:24):
Yeah, you know, I mentioned that bots Jason Botterrell new
GM and the Cracking Deck off the year first time
we've spoken.
Speaker 5 (05:31):
I don't know, you seem a little intense to me.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
I mean, is that is that is that a proper
kind of maybe description of you, that you are laser
focused d You're an intense guy. I mean, I love
that out of you, but you feel like you're really intense,
and I like that about you.
Speaker 7 (05:45):
If you want intensity, keep an eye on Lane Lambert.
Really that's where the intend is coming from. And that's
and and we joke about it, but I think it's
what our organization needs right now. We've right, we've done
a you know, there's a there's a focus on winning.
Speaker 4 (05:58):
We understand how do you get to win.
Speaker 7 (06:00):
It's about development and it's something that I've talked about
to our team. And when people talk about player development,
they just think we're talking about Berkeley cat.
Speaker 4 (06:07):
Right, Shane right, Matty Banier's right.
Speaker 7 (06:09):
But we're talking about everyban, We're talking about CaCO taking
another step. We're trying to help out, you know, Schwartz
or Jordan Embley keep things going in their thirties now.
From that perspective, So to me, that's what I like
about Lane is there's an intensity of win, but there's
also focus on how do we get the most out
of these players.
Speaker 5 (06:26):
So let's talk about some of those guys. Let's talk
about Maddy b Benieers.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
Because when Maddie was selected out of a school that
you know very well, by the way, people went nuts.
They thought this guy's going to be a star, and
maybe it hasn't panned out, and maybe the expectations were
unfair for him, But what does he need to do
to take that next step in your opinion?
Speaker 7 (06:44):
Well, first of all, yes, I'm a proud Wolverine, so
I'm excited to always talk about Matti Baniers. And we
were talking off there, like Maddie came into the league
immediately and had that defensive mindset already and we have
to teach so many kids that he already had it.
And you just love Maddy's work ethic, Maddy's pace of play.
And it's been a challenge for Maddie because we play
(07:04):
him against other teams top lines all the time. Right
he's facing tough competition. Our job is to help him
to keep his offensive game. He's always going to be
a great two way player, an amazing two way player.
Our job as an organization is to continue to help
him evolve his game offensively, and I think working with
Chris Taylor, that's going to our new assistant coach, that's
going to help him a lot. We've added Justin Rye
(07:26):
to our organization. He has a history of working with
players such as celebrating and badard in the offseasons. Hey,
these are the things that we've brought people into sort
of help work at player development at the National Hockeygue level.
We feel, you know, we feel we've done a pretty
good job in our organization of developing players to the
National Hockey League. Now it's hey, while they're up at
the National Hockeyleague, let's keep their development here and we're
(07:47):
trying some new ideas there.
Speaker 6 (07:49):
Now this year, you mentioned some of those young names
are all a little bit different in their level of development.
Speaker 8 (07:53):
Right, Katain's just nineteen years old and he got Newman
and Coppo and Shane Wright.
Speaker 6 (07:58):
So how much can you expect from those guys when
they're aged nineteen to like twenty three to help your
team win?
Speaker 7 (08:06):
Now, Well, I think the thing that gets us excited
is there's so many of these players. So, yes, you
can't rely on Yanni Newman to be your go to
goalscorer every night, but he's gonna pop a couple goals
in for us that really help us jumpstart our organization
our team from that standpoint. Hey, Ryan Winterton's come in
here in the in the season of preseason and utilizes
(08:28):
speed from day one that it's really helped out and
it's really shown and I think his for check ability
and ability to get the net is going to help
out our group. So to me, that the fact that
there's a multiple young players that we're not just relying
on one of them, that's what we really have to
focus and it has to be the focus of our
team at the end of the day. Let's be honest,
like we're not going to have a first line that
(08:48):
can challenge some of the big hitters in the Western Conference,
whether that's Edmonton or Colorado, But we have to focus
on as being a four line team and finding the
right matchups and trying to work and win games. From
that standpoint, one thing I will little just say is
like a guy like Berkeley Caton, we're ecstatic about his
future in our organization and he won't be playing tonight,
but he's gonna be sticking around with us right now
(09:08):
and we'll go from a week to week basis of
what's best for him his development. But it is a
challenge a nineteen year old kid playing in this league. Like, yeah,
you look at Matty Benier's he was twenty years old
when he won Rookie of the year. You know, Shane Wright,
his first full year was twenty years old. So it's
a challenge for Berkeley to be a nineteen in this league.
But hey, well he's learning a lot right now. Every
day in practice, he's soaking it up, learning from players
(09:30):
such as you know, Stevenson or an Eberley or Schwartz
right now.
Speaker 4 (09:34):
And we'll just evaluate week by week.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
Yeah, Berkeley Catton can't even go to that bar over there,
but right he's gotta stay on this side, on this
side with us, we'll cracking GM. Jason Baderel boxes with
us out of the air. And Dick asked you about
a couple of young guys. How about an older guy
I've served. He's old, but he's older thirty years old
by NHL standards. I don't know, is that old Mason
Marchman yep comes over from Dallas the biggest ticket you signed.
(09:57):
I guess it's fair to say. Over the offseason, Well, fans,
you think really noticed this guy's presence right away?
Speaker 7 (10:03):
I think so. He brings an energy, he brings a
passion to the game. And look, we've tried to bring
him players to teach our young players. About winning, and
you look at you know, the cups that say a
guy like Stevenson or a guy that done have won
World hour montor you know, and and you know, Mason
has been in the conference finals.
Speaker 4 (10:21):
The last three years with Dallas.
Speaker 7 (10:22):
He also brings an element that I think that we're
we've been lacking NetFront presence. You know, he loves to
get into the corners, loves to get the front of
the next. Yes, Jaden Schwartz does a great job with it. Yes,
bringing Tacko into our lineup that helps out in stuff too,
but we still have to get to the net more.
Mason brings that, and I think there's gonna be a
lot of He'll contribute to a lot of scoring chances
around there for sure, well scoring chances.
Speaker 6 (10:42):
Jared McCann's been your guy. How is he feeling and
how close to one hundred percent is he? When are
we going to see him?
Speaker 7 (10:48):
We'll see him tonight. We're excited to see him in
the lineup. And look, it's gonna be the challenge. It's
been the challenging preseason that we've had some guys out
with injury, done montor Stevenson you know, can so that's
a challenge, but they're all ready to go tonight, excited
to be in the lineup from that perspective, and you know,
Jared plays in so many aspects of our team power play, penaling, killing,
(11:09):
even strength, and uh it, we're excited to have him
back in the line up here.
Speaker 5 (11:14):
I think we gotta do a wager on this U
Dow Michigan game next week.
Speaker 4 (11:17):
I like that.
Speaker 5 (11:17):
I mean, never mind all that stuff.
Speaker 3 (11:19):
I mean, how about you put up some sweet tickets
and we'll put up uh come host your own radio
show whenever you want. We can go play golf and
you can host some like this Husky's Wolverines next Saturday.
What do you think you're feeling good about that one?
Speaker 7 (11:35):
I felt really good a couple of years ago win one.
I did not feel very good last year at Usky Stadium.
I'll tell you that.
Speaker 3 (11:42):
Somebody fus Mike Jason, good to meet your best of
luck this year? Man, All right, Jason Bodera Box the
New GM and the Crack and Gonna Break. Jeff Nelson,
by the way, former Mariner Yankee, will join us at

Speaker 9 (12:05):
From the R and R Foundation Specialist Broadcast Studio. Now
back to SOFTI and Dick on your Home for the Huskies,
Kraken and the twelfth Man Sports Radio ninety three point
three kJ r FM.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
Alright, boys and girls, back here at Tom's watch Bar
across the street from Climate Pledge Arena.
Speaker 4 (12:30):
Naughty Cow.
Speaker 3 (12:31):
You know I can just play that for like two hours. Man,
I'm never not gonna be funny never ever ever.
Speaker 8 (12:36):
I'll off every time I hear it.
Speaker 5 (12:37):
So freaking good.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
Five o'clock hour, brought to by your friends at Duke
Seafood Restaurants. Make Tonight a Duke Seafood Night at Dukesefood
dot com. So looking at Tarik Scuble's game log for
twoenty and twenty five because I had this little premonition
or an epiphany, or maybe it was just an itch
or something.
Speaker 5 (12:56):
It could be the chilli I had last night one
of the others.
Speaker 3 (12:59):
Yes, that Eric Scooble just gets his ass kicked tomorrow
and they run him out of there in the second
inning and they're doing the hit the road jack, Oh God.
Tomorrow night at Tea Mobile Park so I'm just I mean,
that's not gonna happen, obviously, but.
Speaker 8 (13:10):
So how many times he gotten run?
Speaker 5 (13:12):
Surely his shortest outing is three and a third.
Speaker 8 (13:15):
I'll sign up for that in the fourth inning, thanks.
Speaker 3 (13:16):
So yeah, three and a third, four runs, a couple
of homers, four and two thirds. Every other game he
pitched this year, he went at least five And he's
only got one, two, three, four five starts this year
out of thirty.
Speaker 5 (13:31):
One where he was not on the mound for the
sixth inning.
Speaker 8 (13:34):
How many times he given up more than three earned runs?
Speaker 5 (13:37):
More than three earned runs one, two, three, four, five,
six times fifteen or twenty five and a thirty one?
Speaker 6 (13:46):
Yeah, all right, I mean it's not a it's not
like a two percent chance. There's a chance two percent
chance we get to him. There's probably like a seven
or eight percent chance.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
Well, but I think I think, like you said, you know,
the the best answer tomorrow Luis Castile, that's right, And
then whatever they bring out of the bullpen behind him,
right that that is the answer. The answer is just
be there in the seventh inning with a chance to
win it. You know, even if you're down a run whatever, Right,
but get yourself a chance in the seventh inning to
win this thing and get to the Tigers bullpen. I
(14:17):
got a feeling just talking to some people I know
in Detroit. Not that these Jehos would know anything, but
they cover the Tigers and they do talk radio. They say,
if there's ever a game where aj Hinch is gonna
let Trek Scoba will just go out there until his
arm falls off, it's tomorrow. He's got three games this year,
only three where he was in the hundreds, one hundred
and two against the Guardians in September, one hundred and
(14:40):
three in June against the Pirates, and one hundred and
five at Texas in July against the Rangers. So only
three times this year he's been into the hundreds. But
he could get into the seventh eighth inning with eighty
five ninety pitches and still be rolling. So look, I mean,
I think aj Hinch is smart. He's a good manager.
He knows that Trek Scougle is better than anything has
(15:02):
gotten his bullpen, and if he's dealing with eighty five
ninety pitches, I think he lets him go.
Speaker 6 (15:08):
He probably does, But how effective is a guy gonna
be at pitch number one? Twelve when he hasn't thrown
pitch number one twelve before.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
Sometimes guys get stronger as the year, as the game
goes by. I gotta look up his splits and see
how he does in the later innings. I mean, this
just streams, Yes.
Speaker 6 (15:23):
It streams as a game that you have to be patient.
You need to see five, six, seven or more pitches
in a bat. We need we need one of those
Josh Naylor bats like he had yesterday and the first
that was the first time he came up to bat,
he saw eleven pitches. Like even if you strike out
an eleven pitch at bat as a huge win early
(15:45):
in the game, because I mean, I can't imagine him
going more than one hundred and ten.
Speaker 3 (15:50):
Well yeah right, I'd be pretty surprised if he won
one hundred and ten, that'd be a season high for him.
But yeah, I mean, you know, one hundred pitches, that's
not out of the question. But here's here's just a
quick little look at these numbers. And the problem with
these numbers, guys, is that one or two games could
really skew him and throw him out a whack. But
if you can get to him, if you can get
to him in the seventh inning. He's got a four
point nine to one ERA and the seventh inning this
(16:13):
year one point Okay, so look at this one four
to five of the first three to one nine in
the second. Teams have been getting to him in the
second inning, and then he settles down to the third,
settles down in the fourth, three point six to four
in inning number five, back to one point eight in
the sixth, and then he blows up in the seventh inning.
Nine Right, the three innings where he really gets hit
(16:34):
the most are the second, the fifth, and the seventh.
Speaker 5 (16:37):
So if you can.
Speaker 3 (16:38):
Find a way to get to him and any one
of those previous two innings, even though he's on the
mound comes seventh, any time you may be able to
have a shot to get to him. I'd have to
go back Dick and Andrews and look at the game
log for his seventh inning games that might be blown
up by three or four games, if not one or
two that he pitched in this year. But there's obviously
a recipe of beating this guy because the M's have
(16:59):
done it three times year once in the playoffs, and
Major League Baseball teams American League teams beat him eight
other times this season, so it is possible. But if
I had to hit somebody with the stud stick for tomorrow,
come down on high from Mount Eachi Row and tap
somebody on the shoulder and say, you, sir, are gonna
(17:20):
be blessed with balls of steel in this game tomorrow.
I'm giving it to Luiska Steele, who's getting it.
Speaker 8 (17:25):
You know what's interesting about that second fifth inning?
Speaker 6 (17:27):
Those are probably more like your six seventh eighth guys
in the lineup than your top three. But the guy
It's funny because before I checked the stats yesterday, you
were asking who was going to be the pick to click,
and I was kind of thinking about it. The guy,
The guy that came to mind first for me was
JP Crawford. And then I went and I looked, and
(17:49):
who has the best numbers by far on this team
against Trek Scoobele is JP Crawford. I can see Jp
yankin one to right field and getting this thing going
early in this baseball game.
Speaker 3 (17:59):
How about a quick update on the scoreboardard Phillies and
Dodgers Game four NLDS now tied at one top of
the eighth and look, I'm looking way ahead here. Yeah,
but if the Mariners Anders do make the World Series,
it's gonna be on the road because every team, everybody
el has got a better record than the Mariners do,
and the Blue Jays have a better record. So starting
(18:20):
from this point on, fine, Tomorrow, in essence, Anders will
be the last time the Mariners have home field. If
tomorrow's a one game series, per.
Speaker 5 (18:28):
Se, is Tomorrow's the last time Anders they got home field.
I'm fine with that.
Speaker 10 (18:32):
We I mean, I know with it down the stretch.
The Mariners have proven that they are the better team
at home more often than not. But we've seen that
in the playoffs. It's basically just a whole new season,
so it's ramped up to one hundred. And going back
to the Schoobol conversation, I almost think we have to
think of it from the Mariners perspective as well, because
when they face like an Ace, I feel like they
(18:54):
almost have better at bats more often than not, Versus
when they face the Melton in Game one, where it
was just like aggressive City trying to hit everything out
of the ballpark. It seems like they battle a little
bit more based off of who they're facing. They've had
success against lefty aces this year, whether it's Garrett Crochet,
whether it's Max Freed, whether it's Trek Skuble. So I
(19:17):
have a strange confidence in this team in terms of
their approach at the plate tomorrow to get terreor Scuebel
out of this game early.
Speaker 3 (19:25):
Well, if they win against them again tomorrow, one of
the major major themes of the season is going to
be exactly what you just said, which is the Mariner's
ability to beat.
Speaker 5 (19:33):
Some of the best arts in baseball.
Speaker 3 (19:35):
If they get through this thing tomorrow and get to
the Alcs for the first time in twenty four years,
that'll be a huge reason why they do it. I mean,
just like the one run games, the extra inning games
this year were a big reason why they made the playoffs.
They were a big reason why they missed the playoffs
the last two years, and they're a big reason why
they made it this year. But if they get to
this guy tomorrow, that will be a huge team. You
mentioned JP Crawford only eight at Batsberty's five for eight,
(19:58):
Hoory Polacko's nine twenty nine off this guy with three
home runs lifetime, So you know what the Hori Polanco
thing I flipped out when they signed them, mostly because
that was all they did. But my god, if Horay
Polanco can do it again tomorrow and he got a
couple of bombs the other day, if he can do
it again tomorrow and be responsible for being a reason
(20:21):
why Scooble doesn't get it done, I will personally go
down there and I will kiss Jerry Depoto's ass on
Edgar and Dave for making that signing.
Speaker 5 (20:31):
It's because I was dead wrong about it.
Speaker 6 (20:33):
Well to your point, Andrews, Gerry's oping, Please Jorge, don't
do anything torow that when I have soft these lips
on my butt.
Speaker 8 (20:40):
Okay, we're good now, su all right.
Speaker 6 (20:41):
Anders As I was saying the cases that they have
beaten Paul Skeins, Garrett Crochet, the Miz, Hunter Brown, Nathan
Valdi twice, Max Freed, Casey Miz, Jacob Debrom de Grom twice,
and Derek Scoobel three times, I mean, that's that can't
be a fluke. There's gotta be something to what you're
talking about there, where they're just more focused, more locked
(21:03):
in when they know they have to be locked in
against the best pitchers in baseball.
Speaker 10 (21:07):
Yeah, and especially like I just think it's an approach change,
like we've saw it in Game one against what is
his name, Melton? I don't even know his name, the
guy that Troy Melton Helton, and he kind of diced
us up a little bit because I think the Mariners
felt like, Okay, stuff's not great, We're just gonna attack
everything that we see. And that's when you get into
quick outs. It's not the guys that have the amazing
stuff sometimes that turn into these bad offensive games. It's
(21:31):
the guys that you feel like you can get but
you end up just missing it here, or you're not
necessarily as selective as you would be against a guy
that you feel like you need to be extra selective with.
So I think that's something that we can see with
the Mariners here coming forward.
Speaker 3 (21:45):
Lee Sterling is sixteen and four. In the last four
weeks on the air, The hell are we doing?
Speaker 5 (21:50):
Man?
Speaker 3 (21:50):
We missed the bus. We missed the bus. Let's hope
the bus is still rolling. No, I want the bus
to crash so we can jump back on. That's what
I watched fair enough, sixteen and four. So we'll talk
to leenex segment Jeff. Now, someone joined us from a Mariner,
former Yankee at six pm Everett Fitzhugh, who's a Tiger fan.
By the way, yis they'll join us in a run
six fifteen before the Crack and Anaheim Ducks pregame show.
Speaker 5 (22:10):
But before that, how about a quick what do you got?
Dick Vane?
Speaker 6 (22:15):
Well, we talked to Mike Hombrin about whether Sam Darnald
was gonna be the long term answer, and he has
already sold.
Speaker 8 (22:21):
I thought it was gonna take us an entire season,
but I think a lot of people are already there.
Is it fair? Here's the poll.
Speaker 6 (22:29):
Is it fair to come to the conclusion after five
games that the Seahawks have found their long term quarterback?
Speaker 5 (22:35):
Yes?
Speaker 8 (22:35):
Seventy two percent. No, twenty eight percent.
Speaker 6 (22:39):
Seattle has embraced Sam Darnald as their next long term
starting quarterback. And I, I mean, I can't fault them
based on what I've seen thus far. I still am.
I still want to see more before I like totally
jump into the pool with both feet, you know, But
I I've loved what I've seen so far from Sam Barnold.
Speaker 5 (22:58):
How do you not love what you're seeing from?
Speaker 8 (23:00):
This is twenty.
Speaker 5 (23:01):
Games in a row over twenty.
Speaker 8 (23:02):
Games other than the two battles at the end of
the year.
Speaker 6 (23:05):
It's a twenty game sample size, twenty five game sample
size of Sam Darnold being a really good quarterback.
Speaker 3 (23:11):
So it was last twenty two games going back to
the start of last year, not including the playoffs, forty
four touchdowns, fifteen interceptions, one hundred and five passer rating,
sixty eight percent, completion rate, just over eight yards per attempt.
And I don't have his QBR, but I assume it's
pretty damn good. So this is twenty two games now
(23:31):
where the whole enchilada looks pretty freaking good. Do I
think they found their long term answer? Well, look, when
when you asked me if they found their long term answer?
Speaker 5 (23:41):
What that says to me?
Speaker 3 (23:43):
And you're not doing this because you don't need to
that you might want to think about extending him right right, Like,
I mean, you've got a team friendly deal right now?
Speaker 5 (23:52):
When is he a free agent? When is this contract over?
Speaker 8 (23:54):
I don't think it's a three deal, yeah, I thought
it's like a five year deal.
Speaker 5 (23:57):
I don't think it's a five year deal. I think
it's a three year deal. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (24:00):
But my point is this is that if he were
coming up for free agency, like after next year, three years, Okay,
so we're gonna be talking about a new deal for
him in a year from now, that's.
Speaker 5 (24:11):
Right, when he's got one more year left, that's right.
So fast forward to a year.
Speaker 3 (24:14):
If this is what you see in a year from now,
are you willing to extend him and not let him
go to free agency? And I think right now the
answer is probably yeah.
Speaker 6 (24:24):
But and I don't think you'd have to pay him
to quarterback year money, probably paying them what you're paying
him now, maybe a little bit more.
Speaker 5 (24:31):
The CAP's gonna go up, all that stuff, blah blah blah.
Speaker 3 (24:34):
But do I think there's a better chance than not
that they have found their quarterback of the future, that
this guy can be here for what do you think
the next five to six years? Is your QB into
his early to mid thirties, thirty three years old. Whatever
the odds were two months ago, they're certainly higher now.
Speaker 6 (24:52):
He's only five percent of the cap this year. Next
year he's only eleven percent the final year, which I
agree with you. I only think he'll play that final
year of that three year con because you'll probably if
if he got a new one. It would be after
next season, but it's only twelve and a half percent.
So if you can stay in that ten ish percent
range right going forward for the next five years, that
(25:13):
is fantastic for this team.
Speaker 3 (25:14):
Guy, he's only got two more years left, so in
a year from now, again, one year from now, we're
talking about extending Sam Darnold and keeping him around. I mean,
I like what I've seen so far out of the guy.
I mean, I'm glad that they moved on from Gino.
I think Russell. I think John Schneider has an uncanny ability,
or has shown an uncannyability to get out at the
right time. This is the second time in a row,
(25:35):
right that he's gotten out at the exact right time.
He got out before Russell Wilson went to berserk, and
he's getting out with Gino Smith making probably too much money.
I do feel a little bit bad for Gino because
I think the Seahawks are better than the Raiders are.
I think Gina would be a better quarterback here that
he isn't in Vegas, but I.
Speaker 8 (25:52):
Thought he'd be a lot better than he was.
Speaker 3 (25:54):
For sure, I toly agree with that, but they've got
better talent here than he does down there.
Speaker 5 (25:59):
Wouldn't agree with.
Speaker 3 (25:59):
That as better defense up here. He's got better skilled
players up here, and he might even have a better
offensive line, as crazy as that is to think, yeah
up in Seattle versus what he's got in Vegas. So Andrews,
I do think that Gino's getting a little bit hose,
But I also think that you got younger, you got
the draft picks, the whole thing, and you gotta, let's
face it, a better quarterback. I mean, Sam Darnold's gonna
(26:21):
be in the Pro Bowl conversation. Gino Smith will not be.
Speaker 10 (26:23):
Yeah, And I think the biggest thing with Dick's question
is is two parts number one the long term answer,
because I think almost every Seahawk fan, you know, barring
the the Geno lovers out there, would be like, yeah, okay,
at least he's the same as what Gino Smith was
at the very very least, but he's younger and cheaper,
so overall value, you're you're you're getting a lot more.
(26:44):
I think basically, what we've come to the conclusion now
is that he is far superior than what we were
getting from Gino Smith. And to me, it's not just
these first five games that you can make that assumption.
It's because he's done it for over a year now.
He is no long longer the first, you know, five
years of his career quarterback in the Jets and the
(27:05):
Panthers where that's that's not who he is anymore. He
is a new quarterback. He's one of the best in
the NFL. PFF loves him. Regular stats numbers love him.
He and the Seahawks fans loved him. So yeah, I
think it's safe to say that you at least have
a quarterback for the next three years.
Speaker 3 (27:23):
How much money would you have won if two years
ago I gave you odds on Daniel Jones and Sam
Darnald be a number one and number two in the
NFL and QBR.
Speaker 5 (27:30):
It's crazy because that's a lot of money.
Speaker 3 (27:33):
They're number one and number two in QBR right now,
between Daniel Jones and Sam Donald. Gino Smith, by the way,
is twenty eighth in the NFL, right above our buddy
Jake Browning and right behind Bryce.
Speaker 8 (27:43):
Sam Darnald's QBR is more than twice of Gino Smith's.
Speaker 3 (27:46):
Unbelievable five point thirty nine. Lee Sterling, who was sixteen
to four in the last four weeks on the show
Picking the Locks will be heard this Saturday, I believe
at eight o'clock.
Speaker 5 (27:56):
Is that right?
Speaker 3 (27:57):
On ninety three three KJRFM, and we is claiming he
might even give us a bonus selection of the EMS
Tigers tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (28:05):
Oh wow, the hell does he know about baseball?
Speaker 3 (28:07):
Yeah, we'll find out next on ninety three three KJRFM.
Speaker 2 (28:13):
It's time for our weekly visit with gambling expert Lee Sterling.
The paramount sports brought to you by bail Breaker Brewing,
wherevery hop is grown in the Yakama Valley. Family owned
bold and proudly Pacific Northwest grabbed their flagship Top Cutter IPA,
a citrusy, fine forward classic at your local grocery store
or visit tap rooms in Seattle and Yeakama. Now with
(28:36):
Lee Sterling, here's Suffian dial.
Speaker 5 (28:39):
All right, Andrews, you got him? He says, his phone's
not ringing. I don't know what it is, man, I
don't know what it is.
Speaker 2 (28:47):
Man.
Speaker 5 (28:47):
Maybe it's me?
Speaker 2 (28:48):
Is it me?
Speaker 5 (28:49):
Could it be me? It's probably me?
Speaker 3 (28:51):
Joining us right now on the radio show, A guy
who is red fricking hot. The last twenty games on
the air last four weeks. This man is sixteen to four. Everybody.
Let's walk home in from Paramount Sports in South Florida.
Our friend Lee Sterling, how are you, man?
Speaker 11 (29:06):
I'm great, I'm great, looking forward to big weekend in
football and hoping d MS get.
Speaker 5 (29:12):
It done well.
Speaker 3 (29:14):
We'll get a bonus pick from you on the Mariners
and Tigers for tomorrow. In a second, and let's start
off with some games happening this Weekken, We're going to
get this thing continuing. Red Hot Oregons at home, you
have a seven and a half against Indiana. We're all
rooting for the Hoosiers. What do you think happens at
Austin Stadium on Saturday?
Speaker 11 (29:33):
Okay, So here's what's interesting about Fernando Mendoz. I've watched
him many times in high school, follow his career at Cal,
and he's great at home. He's great against bad teams.
But this year against Iowa, they just scored twenty. Last
year with Cal on the road, they got whipped thirty
eight to six at SMU, lost seventeen to fifteen to
(29:55):
Pit and lost fourteen to nine to two and ten
Florida State.
Speaker 5 (30:01):
Here.
Speaker 11 (30:01):
I just think the Ducks have the better offensive and
defensive lines. When Indiana got to the playoffs, they got
whipped last year. Ducks on a twenty four and thirteen run. Here,
Ducks thirty seven to twenty seven.
Speaker 6 (30:14):
All right, Lee SOFTI and I'll be at Husky Stadium
with one eye on the Mariner game on our TV,
the other eye on Husky's Rutgers Huskies minus ten and
a half.
Speaker 4 (30:22):
What do you like?
Speaker 11 (30:25):
You know, Rutgers is throwing the football and scoring much more.
But what's happening is their defense has been left out
to dry on the field, and that's a real problem
right now. So I expect Huskies, after that finally awakening
in the fourth quarter last week, to keep it rolling here.
I just think this Rutgers secondary is leaky here. I
(30:48):
think I think Washington's gonna win, but I think the
line might be a little bit too high. I'm gonna
say the Huskies win thirty one to twenty seven, but
Rutgers covers.
Speaker 5 (30:58):
All right. Take the Scarlet Nights in the ten and
a half.
Speaker 3 (31:01):
Daniel Jones Lee is leading the NFL in QBR, which
is amazing.
Speaker 5 (31:06):
Only one person saw that coming. It's Hugh Millon. By
the way. He's been saying that for years on the
radio show.
Speaker 3 (31:11):
Get him out of New York and he will flourish,
and Hugh has been right so far. They're playing a
Cardinal team that was a clown show a week ago.
That clown show, by the way, knock me out of
my Survivor league. How about that Colts at home are
given six and a half against Arizona.
Speaker 5 (31:28):
What do you think?
Speaker 11 (31:30):
I think the clown show might continue? But Kyler Murray
knows had a run around for four quarters and do
just enough to keep the Cardinals in it with a
chance to win it, but not good enough for them
to actually win it. So you know this is where
they do their best work, Arizona as an underdog, not
as a favorite. Colts win twenty eight. Twenty four cards cover.
Speaker 6 (31:54):
The two teams that have beaten the Hawks this year
going head to head, Tampa Bay minus three against the Niners.
Speaker 11 (31:59):
Wore you like Niners are beating up? I mean the
people play on a quarterback. You know, when he gets hurt,
they go against his new starter. The first week, that's
what happened. Everyone played the Rams. It's this second week
here we know they've got injuries to the wide receiver position.
Boas is out for the year. If you can't put
(32:20):
pressure on Baker, Baker the touchdown maker, you're in trouble.
You saw him last week. He is right there at
the top top five quarterback right now at home. I
think they get it done. I'm taking the bucks here
thirty one to twenty one.
Speaker 3 (32:35):
All right, we're about to get Lee's take on the
Jaguar Seahawk game. Here's the deal. I just got an
email from Jenny goodmanson. Heyka, Jenny Glenn, Yeah, whose husband
is sitting right next to us. Our boss says she
has an extra pair of cracking tickets for the game tonight.
Would you like to give them away? And said sure.
So here's what we'll do. Lee will give us a
winner for the Seahawk Jaguar game. You text in who
(32:58):
Lee picked to win the Seahawks Jaguar Game plus your
first and last name in your email to four nine
four to five one Andrews.
Speaker 5 (33:05):
You'll pick one winner at random send the game tonight.
Speaker 3 (33:11):
All right, So here we go, Lee, who do you
like to win the Jaguar Seawk Game?
Speaker 5 (33:15):
It's a pick him right now? All right?
Speaker 11 (33:18):
So this Jaguars team is starting to come around. Last year,
they just didn't have an offensive line. They really only
had probably three starting offensive line in this year, probably
seven to eight here. So Jaguars historically don't have much
of a home field advantage. But there's seven to one
and one against the spread last nine home games.
Speaker 5 (33:38):
And by the.
Speaker 11 (33:39):
Way, Jaguars first year head coach Liam Cohen arrived in
Jacksonville after serving as the Bucks offensive coordinator. After watching
what his former squad did against the Seahawks last week,
Cohen gonna have a pretty good idea how to attack
this defense that's down a couple of cornerbacks here. I
like the Jags here, twenty.
Speaker 5 (33:59):
Four three Jags to win, all right?
Speaker 3 (34:01):
Get those texts in and somebody's gonna get a pair
of seeds for the Ducks Kraken game tonight.
Speaker 5 (34:06):
Heurtisy if Jenny Goodmanson go ahead? Alright?
Speaker 6 (34:08):
Lee, Last, but not least, of course, not least, the
biggest baseball game in Seattle in basically a quarter of
a century. Detroit is minus one forty five, Seattle plus.
Speaker 8 (34:20):
One point twenty. Where does the money go? Are we
gonna be happy or sad? At Tomorrow night? At about
eight thirty.
Speaker 11 (34:28):
Well, usually there's a tie back to Miami, and it's J. P. Crawford.
His father, Larry Crawford, went down the street to the
high school where my wife and two daughters went, Miami
Palmetto Senior High. Can only be a Miami guy come
through for you here. There's gotta be those ties here.
(34:50):
In the eleven innings, the Mariners move on three to
two on a single by JP Crawford.
Speaker 3 (34:55):
Because JP Crawford's dad went to a high school in Miami.
That's why that's why he.
Speaker 8 (35:00):
Was my pick to click too. I had no idea
he went to his dad went to high school in Miami.
Speaker 5 (35:05):
I'm just gonna say that is not the opinion of
a professional. That's the opinion of a man that has
had many beers and throwing darts at a wall is
what that is. He says, Mariners winning.
Speaker 11 (35:16):
Did you know about his father's father played for many
years in the CFL, was an All Star for four
years and even one the Great Cup.
Speaker 3 (35:23):
You didn't know that until you looked it up on Wikipedia.
About ten minutes ago.
Speaker 4 (35:27):
Used to.
Speaker 11 (35:29):
Will he played receiver. I used to cover him like
a blanket.
Speaker 5 (35:35):
You are so full of it.
Speaker 3 (35:36):
All right, Game of a week, mam, Game of the week,
USC Michigan.
Speaker 11 (35:41):
What do you know he's four years older than I was,
so uh, all right, So we got a game here
USC Michigan. Loved this side here on a sixteen and
four run on your show. We went ten and one
last week for our clients. You want to hop on board,
you want to get this game for free? Call eight
hundred four one hundred and nine seven four one, get
(36:02):
USC and Michigan on me. And how about this. We
have what's called the NFL five for fifty five. Get
my top five selections in the NFL fifty five dollars,
just one place, Paramount sports dot com.
Speaker 3 (36:15):
All right, Lee, you're the man. Great stuff. Enjoy the weekend.
You never forget. Picking the locks will be hurt Saturday
morning on ninety three to three KJRFM, because we've got
the Husky football game tomorrow. Uh Picking the locks eight
to nine am on Saturday morning right here on KJUR Right,
So leex Oregon minus the seven and a half Ruckers
plus the ten and a half Arizona Cardinals plus the
(36:37):
points Tampa Bay minus the three against the Niners. And
he says the Jags win outright against the Seahawks again,
We'll pick one person for a pair of tickets for
tonight's cracking game.
Speaker 5 (36:46):
Jeff Nelson, former marin or former Yankee.
Speaker 3 (36:49):
He will give us a prediction and it will not
be based on where somebody's dad went to college. By
the way, for tomorrow's game five next on ninety three
to three KJRFM.
