Do I need to give a disclaimer before any Olympic

Speaker 3 (01:35):

Speaker 2 (02:41):
All right, we are back here on a busy Tuesday.
I'm at the ameral Qui Casino sportsbook. Dick is at
the vMac along with Jackson. Mitchell Bly is in the
studio right now pushing all the buttons for us. That
sounds like a great name for like an SEC defender.
Mitchell Bly with his ninth seck of the game for
Alabamaha six. Yeah, they're good for you, pal. You just

(03:02):
worry about the buttons today, Boddy. We'll worry about quarterbacks later. Anyway,
We're at the Emeral Queen until seven, Dick of the
vMac till seven o'clock.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
A lot to get to.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
The Major League Baseball and trade deadline has come and
gone to the Mariners make a big move. They did
make some moves though, picking up JT. Chagua.

Speaker 3 (03:20):
He is back.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
You remember he was here a couple of years ago
and they shipped them off to Tampa Bay as part
of the Diego Castillo deal. So he has returned. I
believe he's got a year left in his contract. He
was banged up until about a month ago or so, Dick,
with some neck spasms, and has been very, very good
for the Marlins ever since he came back off the IL. So,
unless there's a deal brewing, and it's certainly as possible

(03:43):
that something comes down the pipe that we don't know
about in the next maybe five ten to fifteen minutes,
just because it's not announced bye three doesn't mean it's
not gonna happen. I believe these deals just have to
be agreed to by three o'clock today. It looks like,
by all accounts, if you believe everything you see on
social media, and why wouldn't you, that the Mariners are done.
Justin Turner, Randy A. Rose Arena, Jimmy Garcia, and j T.

(04:07):
Shaguash so two relievers, a left fielder and a first
baseman slash DH.

Speaker 3 (04:13):
Jerry Depoto's days.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
Of the Major League Baseball trade deadline for twenty twenty
four appear to be over. And I'll just say this,
I think the Mariners are a better team today than
they were four days ago. I don't know if they've
done enough to make them a World Series contender in
the American League or even the favorite to win the
AO West over the Houston Astros or the Texas Rangers,

(04:35):
but I do think they're a better team than they
were just two days ago.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
Yeah, I don't think there's any question about that. I
like what they've done in the bullpen.

Speaker 4 (04:42):
I think I would give them an A for the
job that they've done kind of repairing this bullpen that
had some definite holes in it, and I'd probably give
them a B to a B plus on the offense.
I would have liked to see YONDI Diaz. I mean,
we knew that the Vladie probably wasn't going to be
a an option there, so I would have liked to
see the other Tampa Bay Ray come with Randy A

(05:04):
Rose arena. I would have definitely given it an A
had they been able to get him as well. But
I'll give it a solid B plus for getting two
guys that clearly are better hitters than just about anything
you rolled out in the first three months of the season.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
Yeah, no question about it. And let's face it, the
bar was low.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
If you're talking about the hitters they rolled out in
the first three months of the year.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
The bar was low.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
I mean, you know, give me a heart beat, for
God's sakes, and you're gonna have an upgrade over certain spots.
But look, I mean there's no doubt. And again I
don't want to be a smart ass here, but anything's
an upgrade over Ty France, right, I mean, the guy
was giving you zilch at first base. So Justin Turner
at the age of thirty nine, numbers overall aren't phenomenal,

(05:47):
but he's been better as of late. Randia Rose Arena
has been better as of late, and on this team,
these guys look like Mickey Dan Mannel and Ted Williams,
for God's sake, So all you were asking for is
just to improve.

Speaker 3 (05:59):
Okay, you know we've been saying this since April.

Speaker 2 (06:01):
If you're sitting around looking to get considerably better at
the deadline to make up for mistakes that were made
over the off season of the last couple of years,
that's just not gonna happen. Look, but I guess if
there's a silver lining, the Mariners got better, and the
Mariners gave themselves a shot to win this thing or
make the wild card at the end of the year,
and did it by not giving up any of their

(06:23):
top prospects. So if we're gonna look ahead to the
off season, which I don't think we should. Everything should
be focused on what's happening in the next couple of months.
But if we are gonna look at it the off season,
the Mariners should have a chance to be very productive
in the trade market if they want to go that way. Dick, Yes,
because they've hung on to every major bullet they've got.

Speaker 4 (06:40):
No, I would say that I'm satisfied, not thrilled. I
would have been thrilled had they been able to pick
up a big bat, but a big bat evidently was
not readily available, or else we would have seen.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
A big bat that was that was ready to go.
I think we got Chuck ready to go chat.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
A little baseball here, Dave love it all right. Well,
he was just on a few minutes to go. We thought, hey,
let's let's let this guy go to the bathroom, you know,
maybe shave his face a little bit, get himself presentable,
take a shower, have a snack, whatever, and then let's
get him on a few minutes after the deadline's over,
in case something does break late. And so far nothing
is happening. Crickets with the Mariners. We think they're done
with Turner, A Rose, Arena Garcia, and JT.

Speaker 3 (07:18):
Chagua.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
Chuck Powell, our resident baseball expert highly paid baseball insider,
joins us.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
Over the year, Chuck, how are you pal?

Speaker 5 (07:26):
I've been holding my pea for six hours?

Speaker 2 (07:28):
Good for you, man, You know what, anything for a title,
that's all it takes. Man, Just hold your peat for
six hours and you got a shot. Well, let's let's
get to it. I mean we are now through it.
The deadline is coming gone. Obviously something could be announced here.
You know, we don't know if there's been something that's
been agreed to behind the scenes, but if this is it,
and it certainly feels like it's it. Turner a Rose Arena,

(07:51):
Jimmy Garcia, JT. Chagua, what do you think? Thumbs up,
thumbs down, sideways? What's the official report card?

Speaker 3 (07:57):
Say?

Speaker 5 (07:58):
Well, speaking of sideways, you know I have been sideways
following the deadline on this day two of the last
three years, so I will tell you this year, I
don't know if you could be more pleased. Frankly. I mean,
if the checklist was an impact bat check you probably
got the best bat that apparently was available on the

(08:21):
trade market, and then another bat because one wasn't going
to be enough. Give me a professional hitter, and you
got that. And Justin Turner he's not the same Justin
Turner that he used to be. But I'll tell you what.
If I am watching a Mariners game and its bases loaded,
you know, down one in the eighth with one out,
I want Justin Turner coming up to the plate on

(08:43):
this current roster. I think he's that kind of professional
hitter that is going to do some excellent things for
this team and also be a tremendous clubhouse presence. You
wanted a back end of the bullten kind of arm,
you've got a guy that's put up All Star numbers,
might be as good as any eighth inning guy in
the game out there. And so you get Jimmy Garcia

(09:05):
or as we like to call him, Gummy Garcia because
we're jumping for joy over having him. And then JT. Sharkwah,
why not? I Mean, I don't think that that one
moves the needle that much, but I'll bet you he's
better than a couple of the guys that we've had
to suffer through in this bullpen so far this year.
So to me, it checked every box. Those were the

(09:26):
three things we won't include Sharkois that I was looking for. Impact,
that a second veteran bat that can be a professional hitter,
and back of the end, a bullpen back of the
bullpen guy that can bridge the gap to Munios. And
so I'm very satisfied, very satiated. I think they did
a really good job, and compared to other teams in

(09:48):
Major League Baseball, I think they're in the conversation for
having the best trading deadline.

Speaker 4 (09:53):
Frankly, yeah, absolutely, Chuck, how would you have evaluated the
division race prior to the deadline as far as ranking
the three rosters of Texas, Houston and Seattle, And how
would you re rank them now?

Speaker 5 (10:06):
Well, I mean, I'll just go back to the beginning
of the year. I picked the Mariners finished second in
the American League West and make the playoffs, and I'm
going to go ahead and say on trade deadline day
that that's the same thing that's going to happen. You know,
the Astros are just very good from top to bottom,
and their lineup, they did not do much at all
unless they're going to sneak something in before the wire

(10:27):
here at the trade deadline. But you know they've been
here before, they've done it. I think the Mariners have
a shot at winning the American League West, a pretty
decent shot at winning the American League West. But I
actually think your path to the playoffs is the easier
path is going to be to climb two of the
three teams ahead of you in the wildcard race, the

(10:47):
Twins who did nothing at the deadline, the Red Sox
who I know that they beat the tar out of
us last night, but they've been living on some pretty
overblown pitching all season long that seems to be coming
back to earth. I think they're going to have a
hard time repeating the first half here in the second half.

(11:08):
And then the Kansasity Royals, who are very talented young
team and I like the way they play, but they've
not ever finished this this current group. So I think
that those three teams chasing down two of them, I
give the Mariners a very good chance of winning the
American League West, but I think the better chance is
to get into the wild card. And that's really all

(11:30):
I care about. I just want in the tournament, and
then I want our starting pitching with either Miller or Wu,
or Miller and Wu coming out to reinforce the bullpen
and the playoffs. That's a dangerous team.

Speaker 3 (11:44):
Yeah, I generally agree with you just get in.

Speaker 2 (11:46):
It'd be nice to win the division, but whatever, just
just get your assaying you home field and baseball is
just so meaningless a time, So I'm.

Speaker 3 (11:53):
Totally with you, just get your ass in there.

Speaker 2 (11:55):
But the difference, I guess is that the Astros and
Rangers kind of aren't done because Texas is going to
get Jacob de Grom h and the Astros are gonna
Getkyle Tucker at some point, and I have no idea
what Tucker's status is. De Grom looks like he's closer
to coming back than than Tucker does. But once those
two players returned, you know, those are basically deadline deals

(12:17):
for Texas and Houston, are they not?

Speaker 5 (12:20):
Well, Jacob de Gram's got to prove it to us.
I don't think he stayed healthier more than fifteen minutes
in any of the race five years.

Speaker 3 (12:27):
Yep.

Speaker 5 (12:29):
And they obviously don't have a lot of faith in
their own chances. Otherwise they do more at the deadline.
I mean they added a backup catcher and left the specialists,
so and you've got a little bit of cushion ahead
of them, and I think they overachieved frankly last year. Texas,
that is, so you know, I don't count them out.
I mean, that's the defending world champion with a lot

(12:51):
of dangerous bats in their everyday lineup, and now they've
got Max Schurzer it looks like for the second half.
So I certainly don't count them out. But if you
want me to handicap it. I'd say the Astros are
the slight favorite to win the American League West, but
I definitely put the Mariners second and then the Rangers third.
And look, I mean, Randy Rose Arena, Justin Turner, don't

(13:11):
come in here and solve this offense. It just has
to be better in the second half. I mean, that's
four months of just awful offense that we have watched.
But you pin the new lineup for the Mariners and
see how far two bats take you. I mean, they
really two bats in Major League Baseball. That changes the

(13:32):
complexion of the offense. And if those guys can come
in and do what they've done and I'm not talking
about historically, just in the last couple of months, because
they both have ops is well north of seven hundred,
and that's despite horrible starts to their seasons this year.
If they can just come in and do what they've
been doing for their respective teams, and then that rubs

(13:53):
off on a couple of Mariner players. You don't need
the entire lineup to get hot the rest of the way.
You don't even need this lineup to be great at
any point this season. With this starting pitching. All you
need to do is from this day forward, tied right
now with the Astros, is for the offense to be
good at least average from this day forward, and you've

(14:15):
got the pitching to put yourself into the playoffs, whether
that's the wild card route or the divisional route.

Speaker 4 (14:21):
Hey, Chuck, one of the reasons I was dubbed Sergeant
Doom a month ago by Ian is because I just
thought we got to the division lead by smoking mirrors
at one run games extra inning games. And you take
a look now in extra inning games they were five
and one, they're one in four in their last five.
In one run games, they were nineteen and nine, they're

(14:43):
zero to six in their last six. So do you
think now we've seen the nator and because of the
new bullpen and because of the two acquisitions offensively, that
we're now going to see those numbers start the head
back up in the one run games, in the extra
inning games.

Speaker 5 (14:59):
Well, I wouldn't be surprised by it. I mean, that's
for sure. I don't think that this team offensively. I
couldn't have envisioned a worse season offensively for this group,
considering what's on the back of the Baseball cards for
each of the players that have traditionally been in the
starting lineup. So I don't think that you can perform

(15:19):
worse as an offensive club for that longest stretch of time.
It's almost impossible to still be in first place after
four months of that garbage that we watched from our hitters.
So you know, yes, you start to get that boost
of you know, confidence that may be a turner because
Turner and a Rose Arena have the ability to impact

(15:40):
the rest of the clubhouse as well. A Rose Arena
with his energy, and boy, Randy Rose Arena believes in
some Randy Rose arena, I tell you that. And to
get Turner, a pro hitter into the lineup, into that clubhouse,
I think it will affect an impact the rest of
the lineup. And so you get that plus a far

(16:03):
better bullpen now with Santos, you know, theoretically healthy, and
now Garcia in the eighth inning that that bridge to
Munnos is not that far. You know, usually you're getting
six quality innings at night from your starting pitching. So
you really just needed somebody to help you get through
the seventh and the eighth, and that seems to have

(16:25):
arrived here. For this baseball team. So that alone is
going to help you win more one run games. And
then you know in the in the extra inning games,
you know that's that's probably a coin flip anyway, But
a little bit of confidence for the offense, a little
bit of you know, feeling like they're not swinging in mud.
And then to have a bullpen that you trust beyond

(16:48):
your closer, I think that'll go a long way, Dick
and and winning a lot more one run games down
the stretch.

Speaker 2 (16:55):
Chuck, before you go wrap it up with this, the
baseball deadline's coming gone. Looks like thems are done. If
something could come out later, but not likely. Justin Turner,
Randy A. Rose Arena, Jimmy Garcia, and Jat Schagua, who
was a Mariner back in twenty one, was a part
of that Diego Castillo deal when he got sent to
Tampa for Diego for Diego.

Speaker 3 (17:15):
He's now returned.

Speaker 2 (17:16):
I guess, guys, my frustration is this, and if we're
just looking at today in a vacuum, I agree with
both you guys that I think they've done well on
a vacuum, going out and getting the bats, getting the bullpen,
I mean, making all these moves, getting four major league
caliber players and not giving up any of your top prospects.
I think if we're looking at this on the shelf
and it's just July thirtieth, good work. But let's go

(17:39):
back to the end of twenty twenty two, when the
Mariners made the playoffs and the drought was over. Have
they done enough with this group, with this rotation, with
this once in a generation rotation to get this team
World Series ready? And that's the frustration is that this
goes back a couple of years. I mean, Chuck, you're

(17:59):
telling me that we're going to be in a dogfight
for the AO wes and the wildcard, which I totally
agree with.

Speaker 3 (18:04):
I guess my point is, should we not be more
comfortable than that?

Speaker 2 (18:07):
Should we really be in a dog fight for a
playoff spot with this rotation?

Speaker 5 (18:12):
Well, there's no doubt. I mean it doesn't. I mean,
you obviously, everybody wants them to spend more money in
the off season and to get you know, that big
impact bat, but really, all of the free agents this
all past offseason show Hay's the only one that's been
worth the money and he was never going to come here,

(18:34):
So you know, yes, I wish they were a little
more aggressive and bringing in offensive talent. I actually personally
think the bigger issue is their offensive philosophy. I don't
think they're bad at evaluating offensive players. Or Hey, Polanco's
been good his entire major league career and he gets
here and he hits one ninety for the first three

(18:55):
and a half months that he's a Mariner. Colton Wong
was just a consistent, steady player for ten years before
he came here, and he was the worst player in
Major League Baseball. So I don't know why that continuously
keeps happening to this organization. And Jerry's responsible for that.
He's as responsible for that as he is for the

(19:17):
offseason maneuvers that you're making. He oversees the offensive philosophy
and the hitting instruction that his players are given, and
I think it is severely flawed. And they could win
the World Series this year. And I still think you
have to rethink and change your entire offensive approach to baseball.
But that's something for the offseason. For right now, I

(19:39):
think you've got a team full of underachieving offensive players
that I got to trust are going to be better
in August and September. And now you've added a couple
of guys that haven't been tainted by her philosophy in
a rose arena and Turner, who are just professional hitters.

Speaker 3 (19:56):
Don't mess them up.

Speaker 2 (19:58):
Don't mess them up, please, I'm pertaining my friends.

Speaker 3 (20:01):
Speaking time.

Speaker 2 (20:03):
All right, listen, we gotta run, We gotta run. Two
words in a music to your ears and men of
our vintage. It's naptime, all right, Chuck. There's a bed
calling your name and a pillow with your name on it, man,
So get some shut eye.

Speaker 3 (20:17):
Great work and we'll talk soon, buddy.

Speaker 5 (20:18):
Thanks man, all right, man, thank you, all right.

Speaker 2 (20:21):
Chuck Powell with us. Please, for the love of God,
don't let them ruin. These guys as interesting and they
show up here.

Speaker 3 (20:26):
Let's do this.

Speaker 2 (20:27):
Tyler Lockett, I think is going to join us from
the vMac where you're at them at the Emerald Queen
Casino Sportsbook. He'll join us in the next maybe fifteen
to twenty minutes or so. So why don't we come
back and kind of break this whole thing down, right?
I mean, Chuck thinks you should be very pleased as
a Mariner fan. The grades on social media not so kind.
We'll get to those coming up on ninety three three KJRFM.

Speaker 1 (20:52):
Our nuns Up coverage Joke Seahawks training camp continues from
the Virginia Mason Athletics Center, brought to you by Northwest
Handling Systems and the twenty twenty four Boeing Class.

Speaker 3 (21:03):
Gaga's fifth through the eleven.

Speaker 1 (21:05):
Now Beck to Saftian did Gun Sports Radio ninety three
point three kJ r FM.

Speaker 2 (21:14):
All right, kiddos, we're back at the emeral Queen Dick
is at the Virginia Mason Athletics Center. Mitchell Blai is
in the studio because Jackson Feltz has been let out
for the day.

Speaker 3 (21:24):
Damn, he's gotta be like a big poop. Huh.

Speaker 4 (21:26):
Well, a lot of people looking at Jackson weird, who
are you and what are you doing here?

Speaker 2 (21:31):
What's that thing? And why is he hanging out with you? Well,
good for Jackson getting some sun he's needed. He's to
be a little pale as of late. So glad that
Jackson's getting out of the studios. Good job by Mitchell
so far behind the scenes. And Tyler Lockett gonna join
us in a matter of pots.

Speaker 4 (21:46):
He's signing off to the play by play on Tyler Lockett.

Speaker 3 (21:49):
He just walked over.

Speaker 4 (21:50):
He is signing autographs for some young kids right now.
So I imagine I would say a tea minus about
two or three minutes for Tyler Locke.

Speaker 2 (21:58):
Well I was I was told by Richkins that when
practice ends, Lockett likes to sign for about thirty minutes.

Speaker 3 (22:04):
By the way, Oh it's all.

Speaker 2 (22:05):
Right, Well maybe maybe it won't be two or thous
We might be looking at around three forty five or so,
and that's totally fine.

Speaker 3 (22:10):
He's Tyre Locket.

Speaker 2 (22:11):
You can do whatever hell he wants whatever, But that
that gives us an opportunity here. Before we get to
kind of reaction to the Mariner moves, the trade deadline
is coming, gone Justin Turner, Randy A. Rose arena A,
Jimmy Garcia, and j T. Chagua, the former Mariner reliever
who was with the Marlins. Apparently the MS can only
do business with teams in Florida. By the way, so
JT's back. He was with us in twenty twenty one.

(22:34):
Those are the moves. Jerry Depoto, President of Baseball Operations.
He's no longer just your GM boys and girls. Jerry
to Poto moments ago with the media.

Speaker 6 (22:45):
I'm very proud of our group. I think we did
a nice job collectively of identifying the way this market
was starting to head. And you know, I think the
fact that we were open to and willing to make
decision earlier than many teams, I think played to our
advantage in this market. The market started to develop over

(23:08):
the course of the last four or five days, we
were aggressive on the front end of it. Really happy
with what we were able to do, and do feel
like we're meaningfully better than we were a week ago.
You know, we added Randy Rose Arena and Justin Turner.
I think, you know, looking back on it now, two
of the better bats that moved in this deadline period.
Added Jimmy Garcia and JT. Schagua, And you know we Jt.

(23:31):
We know he's been here before. I think the version
we get this time is going to be a little
bit different than than the guy who walked out a
couple of years ago. In stylistically, and and Jimmy Garcia
we thought was one of the premium bullpen arms on
the market. And you know, we struck quickly when we
saw an opportunity there. So we did the things that

(23:52):
we intended to do. We were, you know, pretty aggressive
throughout and you know, to no one's surprise, we manned
the phones all day today trying to a little bit more.
But it is what it is, and very happy with
what we were able to do.

Speaker 4 (24:04):
Jerry, can you walk us through the Erosa rain of
deal and specifically just how did that come together?

Speaker 6 (24:09):
Yeah, you know, like most deals do, lots of conversation
back and forth with the Rays and exchanging a lot
of names. And you know, the the Rays know our system,
their skin day scout as well as anybody in baseball,
and and you know, we have a what we think
is a pretty deep system. I think most would agree.
And you know, certainly the Rays were among them. And

(24:30):
you know they found some players that that maybe the
the national publications thought were a little under the radar.
We didn't think that. You know, we feel like that
was a that was a very meaningful give for us
to get Randy or Rose Arena. And and that's what
you have to give to get players like Randy, you know,
especially at this time of year when you've got a

(24:51):
chance to win. You said you're manning the phones all
day today, do you feel like you were particularly close
on anything else, not really. You know, we talked to
a number of team teams about bullpen and you know,
if there was the chance that we could acquire that
one more guy to put in the bullpen, and ultimately
that turned into the JT. Schegua. We had other irons
in the fire on bats, you know, particularly infield bats.

(25:14):
Ultimately the players did not wind up moving, So it's
you know, we we were generally engaged. I think about
midday today was when it really started to become apparent
to us that the next big thing likely wasn't to happen.
And again it allowed us to look back, I guess
in retrospect over the course of the last four or

(25:35):
five days and feel like our tact going into this
was maybe on point for what we needed to achieve.

Speaker 2 (25:42):
Yeah, all right, well look, I mean, obviously it's possible
that the asking price for Guerrero Junior, Robert whatever. I
don't think Alonzo was on the table when it's all
said and done, and I really don't think Guerrero was
on the table either, Dick, when it was all said
and done. It's possible the asking price was just so
stupid everybody said the hell with it? Right and said,
we're not getting involved in prices like that. And I

(26:03):
think the Blue Jays honestly are smart to hang on
to Vladimir Guerrero Junior because they can make a bunch
of moves over the offseason be right back in this
thing starting next year. He went nuts yesterday in the doubleheader,
by the way, so I think you reminded Toronto how
valuable he is. But look, I mean, it's like I
said on Twitter, I would give him a solid B
dick for the for the moves they made, because to me,
this is not just about the moves they made. It's

(26:25):
about the impact they have on all of the other
guys here. And if Polanco, Julio, JP Garver, Railey Hanneger,
if these guys continue to stick it up for this
couple of months, then these two moves will not be enough.

Speaker 4 (26:37):
Well, I guess the question is, you know what makes
more of an impact Justin Turner plus Randy a Rose
areno or one big bat in the middle of the lineup.
And you know, I think Mariner fans would have been
totally jacked up for that one big bat and that
had been in the middle of the lineup.

Speaker 3 (26:52):
But this lengthens you out a little bit.

Speaker 4 (26:54):
And like you said, if it's enough to kind of
slot other guys in the right spot and ignite their game,
like like some of these other guys that have that
have struggled, then that's really all you need. Like you've
been right when you've said all season long, it's not
gonna take much for this offense to be good. It's
just gonna take each guy popping up, you know, from

(27:16):
from a six seventy to a seven ten ohps.

Speaker 3 (27:20):
I mean, that's gonna If everybody can just.

Speaker 4 (27:22):
Do that, then all of a sudden, you're year a
below average offense instead of.

Speaker 3 (27:26):
Just a horrible offense.

Speaker 2 (27:27):
There ain't gonna be nobody from this offense on postseason
awards list.

Speaker 3 (27:31):
No, it's just not gonna happen.

Speaker 2 (27:32):
Okay, So forget the forget the postseason numbers or the
season ending numbers, forget what the numbers look like when
the year comes to win that.

Speaker 3 (27:40):
That's that's done.

Speaker 2 (27:41):
I mean, you blew that opportunity by sticking it up
for the last four months. But you blew it and
you're still tied for first place with the Astros. So
can you just give us a couple of months. Can
you do that? Can you give us a couple of months?

Speaker 3 (27:54):
Because if you.

Speaker 2 (27:55):
Can give us a couple of months, then we got
a shot here to maybe pull this off and maybe
this thing done. And I agree with what Chuck said, Dick, Well,
cart is not out of the equation. I mean, there's
more teams you gotta jump, and there's more teams that
are gonna be involved in that. But both options are
on the table, all right, So let's get a short
break here. Tyler Lockett's gonna join us next On ninety
three to three KJRFF.

Speaker 1 (28:18):
Our non stop coverage Joke Seahawks training camp continues from
the Virginia Mason Athletics Center, brought to you by Northwest
Handling Systems and the twenty twenty four Boeing Classic gauga's

Sports Radio ninety three point three KJR FM.

Speaker 2 (28:38):
All Right, boys and girls, Busy Tuesday continues.

Speaker 3 (28:41):
I'm at the embro Qui Casino.

Speaker 2 (28:42):
Dick is at the vMac where we are joined now
by a guy who I don't know.

Speaker 3 (28:47):
I think we got maybe three and a half four
more years.

Speaker 2 (28:51):
To pass largin and then he can call it quits
if he watch he's not going anywhere until he gets
past Steve eight thousand yards. You're about fifty one, one
hundred and five thousand and change Tyler from passing Largin
and we want you to stay until you break that record. Man,
tenth year in the NFL. Tadle Lockett joins us from
the vMac. How are you, man, Man?

Speaker 7 (29:11):
I'm doing pretty good.

Speaker 2 (29:12):
Man Bliss, Well, it is great to hear your voice
when you hear that ten years in the NFL. That
little kid that played pee wee football back in the day,
high school football. If I would have told you one
Friday night after a high school game, dude, you're gonna
have minimum a ten year career in the NFL, how
would you have thought about that?

Speaker 7 (29:30):
I would have smiled, because first and foremost, it's hard
to get into the league, and then the average once
you get in is about three to three and a half.
So just being able to have that opportunity to be
able to go play, be able to play at a
high level, stay on one team thus far in my career,
I mean, it's super excited.

Speaker 4 (29:49):
How have you been able to battle father time? Because
I think what two and a half. Three years is
the average NFL career, and when you play out there,
you look like you're twenty five, And have you been
able to do that year after there?

Speaker 3 (29:59):
Just the consistent and see every season. Oh, I appreciate it, man.

Speaker 7 (30:02):
I think the biggest thing for me is just find
in different ways to grind in a smart way, not
being able to try to put too much a toll
on my body, but just being able to go out
there and knowing the ins and outs of what I
need to do to be able to get myself ready
and get myself prepared. Obviously, you know, it comes with
a lot of faith, and it also comes with a
lot of luck. You know, you need things to be

(30:22):
able to just play in your favor at times. And
I think for me, I've tried to take advantage of
every opportunity that I've been given, whether it was with
special teams or whether it was a receiver. And just
being able to try to be consistent and resilient and
just somebody that people can be able to depend on.
I think it's also helped me throughout my career.

Speaker 2 (30:41):
Well, the depend on part is totally underrated. I mean,
I'm knocking on wood right now.

Speaker 3 (30:47):
Guys.

Speaker 2 (30:47):
I don't know how superstitious you are, Tyler, but your
career with you know, all these games that you played,
You've been playing pretty much every game since twenty nineteen.

Speaker 3 (30:57):
I mean, how do you do that? Like, what do
you do with your routine?

Speaker 2 (31:00):
What do you do with your health, your diet to
make sure that you're as ready as possible and as
durable as possible.

Speaker 7 (31:06):
I mean, I think the biggest thing is I do
whatever it takes, whatever it needs to be done, and
be able to take care of my body, whether sometimes
it's cryo, cold tub norma tech game ready scraping suction cups, wow,
looking at dry needling. I mean, it's not like I
do those things every single day, But.

Speaker 2 (31:25):
That sounds like me and Dick getting ready for the show.
By the way, that's right exactly what we do.

Speaker 3 (31:29):
We got some massages going on.

Speaker 7 (31:30):
But I mean, I think the other biggest thing, too, man,
is when you stay on one team for a very
long time, you got the athletic training staff and the
guys who do a great job with having the chips
in our jerseys and stuff. They get a feel of
who you are as a player of kind of like
getting the understanding of how much of a load you
could be able to do out there on the practice
field before something starts to become nagging. And so they

(31:53):
do a great job being able to take care of
me as well.

Speaker 3 (31:56):
Well, you've been here a long time.

Speaker 4 (31:57):
You have been with a lot of different play callers,
a lot of different offenses, and so here we are
with Ryan Grubb as the new offensive coordinator.

Speaker 3 (32:06):
What kind of sets him apart?

Speaker 4 (32:07):
What makes this passing game different than what you've seen
the last decade here?

Speaker 7 (32:11):
Well, I mean, I think when I think about grubs offense,
it kind of reminds me back into the K State
days when we played Big twelve football. You see a
lot of guys being able to run not so much
similar offenses, but just tempo, being able to take what
teams give you, being able to put teams in a
buying based off of the coverages that they play with
the alignments and the splits. So I think Grubs is

(32:33):
super super smart, and I think it's showing when we're
out there. We're seeing some routes that I told one
radio group that you know, you got to hot route
that on Madden or NCAA just to get that you
know scheme, and he already has that scheme down pack,
and I think it's it's I think it's a really
great offense man, because you know, if a team plays
the sticks, you can be able to get explosives behind them.

(32:56):
If they played the explosives, you're able to get to
the sticks. So it's not like everybody's going to the stake.
So it's not like everybody's going for deep passes. And
so I think he gives you know, the quarterbacks time
to be able to check people off before the play
even starts based off of the coverages. So you know,
he didn't have to spend time trying to read every
single thing going on. He could be able to cancel

(33:16):
out some of our routes, which gives him a better
understanding of kind of like who he wants to go.

Speaker 2 (33:21):
To Tyler Lockett with us and Tyler, you guys have
your first preseason game a week from Saturday against the Chargers.
I don't expect you to look up or know things
like this, so I'll do it for you. But on
certain websites, tickets are three dollars to get in the
door to watch the game next Saturday, and it's becoming
a parent that less and less teams really care about

(33:41):
these games from a starter perspective. You know, Caleb Williams
is not going to play in the Bear Texan game.
I'm trying to remember the last time you played in
a preseason game, but it certainly feels like we are
going towards more regular season less preseason. As a ten
year now veteran in the NFL, would you be in
favor of eighteen, maybe even twenty games in ditching the

(34:02):
preseason altogether or do those games still have needed value
you think?

Speaker 7 (34:07):
I think those games have much needed value because sometimes
guys might not be practiced players and are more of
game players, and so being able to go out there
and being able to showcase what you can do allows
all thirty two teams or really thirty one teams to
be able to see what you could be able to do.
There's times where we've played some of these teams in
preseasons and those guys get cut. Example, Nico Thorpe. I

(34:31):
remember we played him whenever he was with the Raiders
last preseason game, and then we ended up signing them,
and look how long he played with us after that.
So there's a numerous amount of guys that end up
going to a team that they end up playing in preseason.
I think if you take the preseason out, it really
does a disservice to a lot of guys to be
able to show all the other teams what they can

(34:51):
be able to do, because there's one team that can
only see what you can do, and at that point
they could get hitting. You know, a lot of times
people don't talk about how teams can hire the player
because they don't want anybody else to see how great
that player is, because they can save them and put
them on practice squad and the games. It's very difficult
to do that as long as they take care of
their bodies. I don't agree more so with the twenty games.

(35:13):
I think that you know, preseason gives a lot of
fans opportunities to come to the games. There's times where
tickets are too high and kids can't come to the games,
and you know, all they could do is watch it
on TV.

Speaker 3 (35:26):
But it's getting to the.

Speaker 7 (35:27):
Point where even ordering it on TV is very, very difficult,
and so I think, you know, even though it's three
dollars or whatever the case is, that three dollars is
meaningful to people that never had chances to be able
to come. And I mean I've played in almost a
preseason game every year. It's just a couple of plays,
but I think, you know, you get the kinks out
the preseason, So I do think it's much needed and

(35:49):
much helpful. I just think there's so much revenue in
the regular season games. When you look at the TVs,
you look at the social media, you look at you know,
all these other apps and stuff that want to be
able to buy and purchase so we could play on TV.
It just makes it so much more difficult to say
on should we keep these preseason games, because you know,

(36:11):
for a lot of people, it is about money.

Speaker 4 (36:13):
Tyler Lockett joining us, Gino's about your vintage. He's been
around about as long as as you have. Is there's
still something to be unlocked in Geno Smith.

Speaker 3 (36:22):
And if so, what is it?

Speaker 7 (36:23):
I mean, of course, I think that you know, ever
since he got an opportunity to play, he's been playing
at a high level. You know, he's been pro bowled
back to back. I think he's been showcasing what he
can do. And I mean people forget kind of like
all the things he had to go through just to
be able to get to this place. I think, you know,
his story is a great story that shows people that
you gotta be resilient, and you gotta be dedicated and

(36:44):
committed to the grind, and sometimes it does take years
to be able to get your chance and opportunity, because
if you sit behind people, sometimes you can waste those
years and waste those practices and waste those moments in
times where you could get better. And I think he's
been getting better each and every day. I think he's
you know, I think he's taking this game to another level.

(37:04):
Thus far as we started workouts and stuff. He's throwing
some really really amazing balls. You've seen DK catch an
amazing touchdown up back there one hand. You got Bobo yesterday,
DK today. So I mean, I think everybody's kind of
doing their part, and we can see this offense coming
alone really good.

Speaker 3 (37:22):
Tyler locket with us.

Speaker 2 (37:23):
We had a Chin on the air a few days
ago and asked him about facing this new look Ryan
Grubb offense, and his head almost spun off his shoulders,
by the way, talking about everything that you guys are
throwing at the defense, what about what you're seeing from
the defensive side. It's a brand new scheme, right, Mike McDonald.
People think he's the best defensive mind walking planet Earth.
I mean, give us a take of what you're seeing

(37:43):
from that side of the ball that looks different and
brand new from last year.

Speaker 7 (37:47):
I think their defense is really really amazing, if you
ask me. I think the way that they play defense
is very skilled and oriented and very detailed. You put
the corners in a position where they're not really in
a bind, but they're able to work together, and sometimes
they pick and choose whether they want to funnel things
inside or funnel things outside. The safeties are really good

(38:08):
at being able to play the defense. I think the
biggest thing is you don't have to depend on one
person to be great. You have to depend on each
and every person to do their part. More so, and
just being able to communicate. I think it's hard to
run as defense if you don't communicate, and so it
forces people to have to like talk, It forces people
to have to be able to explain what's being able

(38:29):
to go on, because if you don't communicate, then everyone's frustrated.
And so I think everybody's been doing a great job
so far in camp just being able to communicate and talk,
and when people learn where their leverages are and where
their help is, it makes your job so much easier
as a defender.

Speaker 4 (38:43):
Hawks wide receiver Tyler Locket joining this final. A couple
of minutes here. You mentioned DK with the one handed catch.
I mean, I can just hear Seahawk fans everywhere. You
got to target the beast. It's not like they don't
want targets for you. They love targets for you, But
it just seems like there's more to be had with
four team. How do we do that in twenty twenty four?

Speaker 7 (39:03):
I mean, you know that's not my job. That's the
coaches job. I mean, you know, they pick and choose
the players that they want to be able to run
things through. And I think the cool thing about our
group is that, you know, if we got to be
a decoyed and we'll be a decoy. You know, if
we got to be able to run around to get
other people open, and we'll do that. You know, we

(39:23):
can't be a selfish group. And I think that you know,
DK is an amazing receiver. I do think that if
he's gotten the amount of targets that a lot of
these other players have gotten that he would get just
as much credit, if not more, because of the type
of player that he is, a type of explosion. It's
explosive that he has, like all that different type of stuff.
I just think that it's you know, it's just difficult

(39:45):
because you know, at one point, we've always been more
of a run first offense. That could still be the case.
You know, even as we go into this year, we're
still gonna take what teams give us. But you know,
I think that he is taking his game to another
level as he enters it too, year six, and I
think that there is more for you know, him to
be able to showcase. And I think he's showing us
each and every day.

Speaker 3 (40:05):
Camp Tyler, if.

Speaker 2 (40:07):
You were in charge, who would you cut and who
would you keep? I'm kiddy, I'm Kenny, Kenny. Hey, when
the career is over and you're doing radio, we can
talk about rosters and all that stuff. So for now,
you just keep kicking ass and focus on being the
best receiver you can be because we are damn lucky
to have you in this town. Tyler Lockett, great stuff,

(40:27):
good luck this year. We'll talk down the road.

Speaker 3 (40:29):
Buddy, appreciate it. You got it man.

Speaker 2 (40:31):
Tyler Lockett with us on the radio show a few
minutes with the og of the Seahawk Wide Receiver COR
we're just saying we gotta break. David Sampson's gonna join
us former president from the Marlins and give us a
taken with the Mariners to to the deadline.
