Speaker 1 (00:02):
I'll be honest with you, man, I there's a reason why,
and we talk about this during the regular season. I
don't like going to this ballpark when the Blue Jays
are in town during the regular season. And there's a
reason why there were a lot less Blue Jay fans
in the stands last night than for a regular season games.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Or kudos to the Mariners or Mariner.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
Fans, whatever the hell they did to keep those slime
balls out of our stadium last night. The problem guys
with me, and you may have seen me tweet about
this yesterday.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Every single one it felt.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
Like they were sitting right next to me in my
section last night, including one Jackwagon who was in full
Blue Jay uniform, hat, uniform, pants, the whole freaking thing.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
Do you think he was gonna get the call to
the pen?
Speaker 1 (00:39):
All he was missing was a cup in some EyeBlack
for crying out lines, so right to sit next to
that bozo the entire game. So look, I mean, here's
the deal, and the obvious is this, Mariners still very
much have the advantage at this very moment in this series,
no question about that. If I would have told you
before the series began, they're gonna be up two games
to one going into Game four with Luis Castilla, when
Max Shurr's are on. Old man, Max, you would have said,
(01:01):
where do I sign? Right this game, though, today has
taken on for me, at least emotionally, and I think,
even kind of slightly logically a much different meaning. I
just have a feel that whoever wins this game for
us tonight may end up winning this whole freaking thing.
I mean, you're talking about the Blue Jay offense waking
up against George Kirby last night. If they can win
(01:23):
this thing somehow someway and get their pitching staff to
go toe to toe with Luis Castillo and win this thing,
maybe in the later eatings. I don't see Luis Castillo
getting destroyed knock on wood the way George Kirby did
last night. If I can't count on a guy who
in the month of September was basically balls by the
way for this baseball team, and a guy who's their
most seasoned veteran arm against a forty one year old
(01:47):
pitcher by the way, and Max Scherzer who has not
made a start since what September twenty fourth, then what
can I count on? I gotta like this pitching matchup tonight.
I have to like this pitching matchup. On paper, the
Mariners have every single advantage. What I need to see
happen tonight is I need to see Dan Wilson have
a little bit of a better feel for the game
than he had yesterday.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
Slightly. We're talking about that in a second Dick.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
And then I need guys like Gino Suarez and Randy
a rose Arena to step up. Randy a rose Arena
comes up last night with a bomb down ten that
does nothing for me nothing, Grow a set of balls
and start being clutch for this baseball team when the
game is on the line. Guys hitting a Buck seventy
six with a five to ninety four OPS and the
playoffs not good enough. Gino Suarez hitting a Buck fifty
(02:32):
two with a four to seventy three OPS in the
playoff not good enough for this baseball team. These pitchers
have gone out there game after game for the most parts,
and they've piched their balls off. The offense needs to
be able to give these guys a little bit of cushion,
especially in a game like this, and especially against an
offense like that.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
I think the bottom line is the Mariners have to
win this series for one reason and one reason only.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
The series or this game, this series, and I'll tell
you what.
Speaker 4 (03:01):
The Blue Jays in successive games have started a twenty
two year old making his fourth ever major league start,
a pitcher that has had made nine starts since October
of twenty twenty three, and now a forty one year
old that hasn't pitched in three weeks and only pitched
half this season. If you would have told me going
into this series that's the stretch that you would face
(03:24):
of opposing starting pitchers, there would be no excuse and
you can place the blame on whoever you want. You
want to place on Randy Rose Raina, Fine, you want
to place it on JP Crawford, Fine, you want to
place on the offense, whatever you want to place it
on Dan Wilson more for not touching Luis Castillo for
eight days, nine days, other than fifteen pitches that he
(03:45):
threw on Friday. Yeah, I mean that's a criticism for
Dan Wilson. But the bottom line is you're the better team.
You got the much better staff, you got, the better bullpen,
you got, the deeper offense, and I think those offensive
guys that you mentioned. I mean, eventually it all kind
of comes back into the wash. Right, You're gonna have
guys that are hot for a stretch and guys are
for a stretch. The sample size I think still to
(04:08):
say this guy's having a terrible playoffs. I still think
the sample size being only what eight games?
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Yeah, I mean.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
That they are having a terrible ways, right, I mean,
there's no other games to put the players.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
But if a time, that's how heroes are judged.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
What I'm saying, though, is if it was an eight
game sample size in the regular shit, but it's not.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
I mean, I totally agree with your premise.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
By the way, if this was an eight game regular
season run in the middle of June, right, nobody's getting
on Randy A. Rose Arena for hitting a buck seventy
six and nobody's getting on Gino for hitting about fifty two.
Maybe it's something that we talk about, but we're certainly
not animated. Like right, there's no doubt. But this is
why you brought these guys here. You you went out
and you got Gino Suarez for moments like this. You
(04:51):
got Randy a Rose Arena, who you mentioned yourself was
great with Tampa Bay right in the playoffs back in
the day. They need to start connecting, they need to
start hitting the base. And look, Dick, I totally agree
with what you're saying about the opportunity the Blue Jays
are giving you with their pitching staff that they're throwing
out there. And your point about Castillo was totally valid
because the guy his last start was October fifth, He
(05:13):
had fifteen pitches on Friday night, versus the Tigers easily
could have pitched yesterday. And I could see somebody saying, well, hey, eventually,
you're gonna have to go to George Kirby. I get that,
but there's a difference going to George Kirby up to
one versus up three to one, because now you've given
Toronto this unbelievable momentum and the fact that they woke
up this morning in their team hotel knowing they could
(05:35):
tie this thing and go back to Toronto.
Speaker 4 (05:37):
I had more of an issue going to Logan Gilbert
on short rest two games ago than I did going
to George Kirby yesterday. I mean, why would you pitch
a guy on short rest when you've got Luis Castillo
sitting there? Since October the fifth, not making a start,
And don't tell me it's home road splits, because go
look at Logan Gilbert's home road strits splits, and go
look at Luis Castillo's.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
They're the same. They're exactly the saying.
Speaker 4 (06:00):
Both are better pitchers, far better pictures at home as
they are in the road. But it's not like Logan
Gilbert's are more even Now, Yeah, the points two runs
better at home, by so's Logan too.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
So is Logan two point one.
Speaker 4 (06:11):
So the point you made off the air, I want
to talk about here, Randy A Rosearina in the leadoff spot, right,
that's something I haven't figured out since he got put
in the leadoff spot. Now, they've been winning games, so
we've kind of exhored it.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
But it's not that Randy has succeeded.
Speaker 4 (06:28):
Randy probably has the worst strike zone of any Mariner hitter,
and he's.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
Your leadoff guy.
Speaker 4 (06:35):
The guy swings for a four hundred and twenty five
foot home run every single time he swings the bat.
And guess what, he hadn't had a home run in
over one hundred bats until yesterday when you, as you mentioned,
he did it in a Devait.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
Yeah, well, look, we know that not every move is
gonna work, right, I mean, there's gonna be some kind
of hole. There's gonna be some move that a manager
makes that's just not gonna work out. And yeah, I'm
looking up Randy's you know, splits in the in the
bat in the in the leadoff spot. He's actually hitting
two to eighteen with a six forty five OPS in
the leadoff spot in fifty three games this year. And
(07:07):
that's not including the playoffs. So those numbers are actually
overall or even worse. And it's by far his worst spot,
by far his worst spot in the batting line.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
Well, he's out there. He's out there again tonight.
Speaker 1 (07:18):
Cal Rowley hitting second, Julio third, Polanco is gonna be
at d H because they got Leo Riovas at second base,
Naylor Suarez can zones in rights or Robless has the
day off at least from starting and then two and
then JP it's shortstop. But you know, look, I mean, guys,
we can sit here and break down all these numbers
and blah blah blah. I'm where I'm coming from right now.
(07:41):
As a fan, I think we're gonna get it.
Speaker 5 (07:44):
Tonight.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
I think the Mariners win tonight. I think they go
up three games to one. Tomorrow's going to be a zoo.
I again, if I can't wake up and feel good,
and there's nerves no matter who's starting in the playoffs, right,
Randy Johnson came in from the bullpen in Game five
and ninety five and people are losing their freaking minds,
and he actually gave up the lead. People forget that
before Edgar had that double right, So not everything works,
(08:07):
I get it. But if you're telling me before this
series starts, we're up two games to one with Luis
Castillo the Rock, and there's a reason why they call
him the rock, steady veteran presence against a forty one
year old and Max Shurtzer, who's got an ERA over five,
it is not nearly as good as he used to be.
I'm saying, sign me up. I'll take that matchup. But
(08:29):
if the Mariners don't get this done tonight and they
go to Game five tomorrow, Tide, I'm going into full
blown panic mode.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
As a matter of face. You know me better than anybody.
That's just the way I am.
Speaker 4 (08:39):
Well, and I think I think it's fair. I mean,
I like, my level of concern for the series is
about a.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
Four right now. Yeah, what if they lose tonight, it's
an eight.
Speaker 3 (08:46):
I think it doubles.
Speaker 6 (08:47):
Now.
Speaker 4 (08:48):
That's probably too much versus the percentages of them still winning.
Speaker 1 (08:52):
That's unlike you to allow yourself to swing that much emotionally.
Speaker 4 (08:55):
Past I know, I know, but you I mean, I
would be there would be a date of depression if
I'm leaving that stadium tonight after a.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
LOSSUS two two.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
However, at some point between me leaving that stadium, if
we do lose and doing the show tomorrow, I will
probably come to my wits and say, well.
Speaker 3 (09:12):
Wait, wait a second.
Speaker 4 (09:13):
All we need to have happen win two games is
them to win Friday, take one of three at home,
winch Friday, and they just win one of two in Toronto.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
Again, you're talking about some serious momentum. You're talking about
facing a Blue Jay team that again has more wins
at home than any other American League playoff team. I'm
not saying that what happened in Games one and two
was a fluke, but for them to get beat like
that the way they did kind of was kind of
was you know, with the way their season went at
Rogers Center this year. So I mean, look, you know,
every every game that we keep going here, biggest game
(09:45):
in twenty four years, and maybe you can argue the
biggest game in Mariner history right now. I mean they
were they were down, you know, three games to one.
They were down three games to two going into game
five and game six of the ALCS, And I'm watching
that train wreck in front of my very eyes develop
and a lot of other people have quoted the same instance,
and I'm thinking, man, this this looks familiar. Oh, this
(10:06):
is like us when we went to Yankee Stadium and
kicked their ass in game three. Right after they came
here and beat us in two games, we went there,
kicked their ass in game three and then guess what happened,
lost a heartbreaker, heartbreaker.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
In game four, and then got waxed in game five.
We thought we were gonna win game and it was over. Yep,
and it was over. So let's do that.
Speaker 1 (10:24):
But let's play the role of the Yankees exactly in
this series, because so far the series is going exactly
the way that series did from a Yankee perspective. All Right,
we're gonna break two thirteen Mike Homgan's gonna join. We'll
get his thoughts on Tonight's all right? What would he
say to the boys? Come out on ninety three to
three KJRF.
Speaker 7 (10:40):
As part of our non stop coverage of the NFL,
Your home for the twelfth Man proudly presents former Seahawks

expectations and that's what makes Toyota Kirkland's so special. And
(11:01):
by R and R Foundation specialist serving Western Washington for
over twenty years now from the five twenty Bar and
Grail in Bellevue, Mike comrid with SUFTI and did.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
You know, I wonder if our next guest knows how
much coaches and players and professional sports just stress us
out beyond belief.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
Like do they even care about the little people? Do
they even care about us?
Speaker 1 (11:24):
And the fact that we have no control over any
of this whatsoever. Have to sit there and allow our
moods to be dictated by people we've never even met, for.
Speaker 4 (11:33):
Crying out loud. At least he can pull the strings
call the place. He's got some impact.
Speaker 2 (11:38):
Mike Congrin's with us.
Speaker 1 (11:39):
Coach, do you have any idea how much this stuff
just stresses out people like us?
Speaker 2 (11:44):
And do you even care? Did you care when you coached? Honestly?
Speaker 6 (11:47):
Oh, I really cared a lot. I really did. I
had to take care of my I had to take
care of my my own moods first. Yeah, but then
I always had particularly you know, and you always accused
me of yelling at you that I practiced that one time.
Speaker 2 (12:01):
Yeah, yeah, you did, by the way. Yeah, there's no.
Speaker 6 (12:03):
Don't I don't see. I have no remembrance of that
at all. None. It's out of my memory bank.
Speaker 1 (12:08):
Well, this is one of those games tonight. Before we
talk some football with you, I just got to get
your thoughts. I mean, you're a you're a coach, you're
a teacher, you're a competitor. You've been around organized athletics
your entire life. Man, Uh, Mariners get spank last night?
You know, how do you how do you shake something
like that off? And baseball is different than football, I
get it, But you know, what's the what's the advice
(12:28):
for these guys shaking that off and getting right back
out there again tonight.
Speaker 6 (12:32):
Well, they shown they've shown that ability all season long.
First of all, that's what they've been able to do,
and I expect them to do the same.
Speaker 4 (12:40):
You know.
Speaker 6 (12:40):
It surprised me though, that game last night surprised me.
I don't. I don't usually watch baseball now this season,
all the way through, at this time of the year,
but uh, you know, and I didn't last night after
they got bombed pretty good and then I turned it off.
But but they they will bounce back, and I expect
them to have a really good game today and win it.
You know.
Speaker 4 (13:01):
John Schmoltz on the broadcast last night said, hey, it's
it's easier to bounce back after a loss like this
than it is to bounce back after just a heartbreaker.
Speaker 2 (13:10):
Would you would you agree with that? In football and
in baseball?
Speaker 6 (13:14):
I would. I think I would. You know, I think
I would, Because when you have it in your grasp
and you can see, you know, you can see the win,
and then it gets slips away right at the end,
that's tough, and it sticks with you, just like losing
Super Bowls. It sticks with you longer. But when you
get bombed out like that, you go go, kid, does
(13:35):
you know, wash your hands, let's go as a new day.
Speaker 1 (13:38):
Yeah, I mean halfway through that thing, you just realize
it's over. The hell with it, right, Let's get out
of here and get home and get our bullpen set
for tomorrow. But Mike Congren's with us, and man, I mean,
fairly big game Monday Night football coming here on Monday
night at seven o'clock against the Houston Texans. I mean,
let's hope it doesn't go this far, but it could
be a crazy night because game seven MIC of the
Alcs except for about five o'clock as well on Monday night.
(14:01):
But give me your thoughts on what the Seahawks did
going down to Jacksonville.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
And beating the team.
Speaker 1 (14:06):
I think you thought they were in a good spot
coming off their emotional win against Kansas City. They head
down there and they take care of business three thousand
miles away. And now, for as bad as the Hawks
have been at home under McDonald, he's won nine in a.
Speaker 2 (14:18):
Row and he's ten and one on the road. How
about that?
Speaker 6 (14:22):
No road The road record is unbelievable, I mean really is.
And so now we just got to fix what. I
don't know what's happening at home on a cage. I
don't know what's effecting that record, but we got to
fix that. But that win was a big win. Now,
having said that, you know, I think people were overrating
Jacksonville just a little bit because of the win that
(14:42):
they had the week before. And I think watching the
quarterback play for Jacksonville, who I hadn't seen very much,
he disappointed me. He held the ball too long. It
seemed like to me, he missed some throws he should
have made. And he's a he's a he's the guy
that has to take them to the top and and
(15:03):
he didn't do it in that game. And he got
to give credit to the Seahawks. They're defensive line and put
a lot of pressure on him and I think eventually
won the game for him.
Speaker 4 (15:12):
Coach, the age old question for years here was why
aren't we getting the ball to DK Metcalf more? And
now DK Metcalf has gone and we've got a wide
receiver that is on pace to break the all time
NFL record for yards in a season in Jackson Smith
and Jigmas, So why.
Speaker 3 (15:28):
Are we able to get the ball to JSN more.
Speaker 6 (15:33):
Well. You know, it's a good question. I think I
think he he's a better you know, Metcalf was all unbelievable,
but he I think he had strengths running down the field, speed,
direct routes, those types of things, throwing the ball deep
to them and then run after the catch. I think,
and jigma is he really is to me a very
(15:55):
smart receiver who knows where the areas are aust when
the quarter has to move. That's the first thing. The
second thing is, I think Donald's off to a great start.
I think Donald is running the offense and running it
the way it should be run, and he's throwing balls
on time, and I think it all it's all coming together.
But your point is a good one, Dick. I mean,
(16:16):
this young guy. He's not as big, no one's as
big as Metcalf, but he's really good. And and I
think the receiver group right now, with kup porton those
three and then Jim, that's a good group. I'd like
to have that group throwing the tight ends too.
Speaker 1 (16:32):
You know, Mike, A lot of people last year had
an issue with the Seahawks running game, right. A lot
of people did that. Ryan Grubb wasn't running the ball off,
he's throwing the ball too much.
Speaker 2 (16:40):
Blah blah blah.
Speaker 1 (16:42):
They averaged four point two yards per carry last year.
Now they're averaging three point seven yards per carry. They're
down almost a half a yard per carry versus where
they were a year ago. So I think if you
were to have told somebody that before the season started,
they would have said, well, there's no way they're four
and two, and there's no way they're a fumble away
from five to one. Yet here they are, right, So
I guess the question is, unless they can find the
(17:02):
consistent running game, is this approach sustainable?
Speaker 6 (17:06):
Honestly, that's that's a good question, Dave. I think they've
got to get better in the running game to really
get where they want to get to. That's first of all.
You know, I don't I don't think it's sustainable, even
though their passing game is very, very effective. I'm rather
(17:27):
disappointed in how they're running the ball right now. And
it's not I don't think it's because of the backs.
I think they're having questions up front, and I think
it's they continue to have questions up front and until
they get that fixed and situated. Just with the way
they want it. They might. They might because they're stressing this.
(17:47):
They this was so important to them, and they wanted
to be good at it, and they practiced a different style.
But now it's not paying off the way they thought
it would. So they still have some work to do upfront.
Speaker 4 (17:58):
So coach Sam Darnold's only been sacked seven times in
six games. Gino Smith was sacked fifty times last year.
Speaker 2 (18:06):
So either Gray Zabel.
Speaker 4 (18:08):
Is the second coming of Steve Hutchinson and he's a
first ballot Hall of Famer because that's really the only
change in the offensive line, or Sam Donald's just much
better handling pressure than Gino is. So like, how do
you balance those two things and what holds more weight?
Speaker 6 (18:22):
Well, like I said, I really believe the offensive line
has work to do, even in the protecting the quarterback Dick,
I really think so. But having said that, I think
what Donald gives you. He throws the ball on time,
it's back Boom's plant throw. You watch when he throws.
He doesn't hold the ball and drift, and if he
does hold the ball, he's dumping it off right away.
He knows, Okay, I can't hold the ball in the
(18:43):
pocket that long I'm gonna get sacked, and I think
Gino that's an area of his game that could have
been better. I mean, I thought he was really pretty good,
but then you know, not holding it hoping for the
big one, just drunk and drug, drop it off, get
it to somebody, gain some yards, Live for another day,
and I think Donald is really good at that.
Speaker 1 (19:01):
Well, Mike, you mentioned sacks. Denver Broncos are kind of
lapping the field in that category, but right behind him
as the Seahawks, at number two in the NFL, tied
for second in sacks with Pittsburgh. Now, obviously a lot
of that's due to last week when they got seven
off the Jaguars, but I'm kind of wondering, what did
you see them do because we used injuries. We kind
of used injuries some folks did as an excuse for
(19:23):
the Tampa Bay game. And maybe the Bucks are just
that good of an offense. But they went down to
Jacksonville and they were also banged up, and they had
seven sacks and the scheme was the star against the Jaguars.
So how did they play Jacksonville and get seven sacks
against a team that had allowed six in the first
five games.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
Of the season.
Speaker 6 (19:44):
Well, first of all, I got to give credit to
the young guys who came in and played in the
secondary for the starters, because we were banged up in
the secondary. And typically if I'm going in against the
team with the secondary that's banged up like that, I'm
licking my lips. I mean, we're going to get at
from hard. And but then you flip it over and
if you watch the film again, he's holding the ball.
(20:06):
You know. I don't look at it like Hugh does
when he's studying all this stuff what's happening downfield.
Speaker 2 (20:11):
But he was.
Speaker 6 (20:11):
Holding the ball too long on a lot of plays
that allow him to get sacked. Thirdly, however, the pass
Russ was really good. They put pressure on him, you know,
and and they're really doing that very well. The te
stunts in particular with the tent and the defensive end
and the tackle crossing over each other. Jacksonville had no
(20:32):
answer for that. Wow had no answer for that, And
so it led to a great, great defensive effort by
the Seahawks.
Speaker 4 (20:39):
Coach Tarik Wollan reportedly is being shopped. How aggressively were
you would you pursue pursue shopping Tarik Wollan if you
could get tell him for who the role right now,
it's they're talking about Devon h Chan, who's the starting
running back for the Miami Dolphins. If you think that
the running backs of the issue in Seattle. H has
got a lot of talent, there's no question about it,
(21:01):
but he hasn't broken out yet and he's you know,
kind of injured at times.
Speaker 6 (21:06):
I'd be surprised if they make the deal. Of course
I've said this a number of times and they've made deals,
but I'd be surprised in the middle of the season
you make a deal like that because I don't I
don't think the running backs are the problem. I already
said it, and I think it's upfront, and so I think,
I think you don't need to do that. And then Wolan,
you know, to trade away a guy who started for
(21:30):
you at corner for the good portion of his career
while he was here, I think it'd be a mistake
because you do have the injuries to deal with. He
has some injuries to deal with. He will come back
in and play, and if you're going to do something,
you do it at the end of the year. I
don't think, right now would be the way to do it.
Speaker 1 (21:47):
Mike, you mentioned the stunts the Seahawks were using against Jacksonville,
and I was going to ask you just a follow
up on that, because I remember telling Dick, you know,
my whole take on this thing. I think that the
two biggest stars of the show right now where Sam
Darnold and Mike McDonald's defensive scheme. That's why I didn't
want to use injuries as an excuse against Tampa Bay,
and we didn't use them against the Jaguars because they
(22:09):
were phenomenal on defense. Right, And again, maybe there is
just that big of a drop in talent, But do
you ever remember coaching against a coach, whether a coordinator
or a head coach, where it really didn't matter who
was out there, the scheme was such a problem for
you that it drove you bananas.
Speaker 6 (22:26):
Yeah, there are a couple of teams, you know. First
of all, way back when we played the Chicago Bears,
when they had Buddy Ryan, and he had a scheme
that not many people in the league had, and so
where your preparation for the week was really different, and
that was a challenge, a huge challenge. The other one
was Pittsburgh Pittsburgh to me, every time we played them
(22:48):
wherever I was coaching, it was it was a game.
Speaker 2 (22:51):
You know.
Speaker 6 (22:52):
My second game, my third game coaching was against Bill
Kawer and the Steelers in Green Bay. We didn't score
a lot of points. We won the game, but their
defense was always. They were just good. You know, they
were disciplined that they were they they were in the
right spots, they tackled well, they were just good. So
you had to be really good on offense to score points.
(23:12):
So those are those are the two. And then New
York times. Of course with Taylor and all those guys,
they were very special.
Speaker 4 (23:19):
Coach I said the beginning of the season, I thought
it'd be a total waste of talent if Jalen Milroe
just sat on the bench and never played.
Speaker 3 (23:25):
And he's sitting on the bench were playing.
Speaker 4 (23:28):
But I tell you what, I guess I don't yearn
for him to play as much now as I did
before because I had no idea this passing game would
be as explosive as it is With Sam Darks, I thought,
I struggle to move the ball, So what how would
you use Jalen Milroe?
Speaker 6 (23:44):
Well, you know what he you know, puts a smile
on my face, because that's what we all thought, that
he'd be inserted in there a little like that guy
from New Orleans was when he before. Now he's the
starting quarterback, but you know, he's a couple of plays
he's had it hasn't worked. So I think they made
(24:05):
a pretty good decision that if they were planning on
playing him, and he might still play, you know, but
if they're playing on playing him, just just don't don't
wreck the guy. Just let you know, let him watch,
let him learn things are going well. If I'm inserting
him in the game, maybe I don't need to, because
maybe I just want to get cute, you know, just
(24:25):
let him just just let him watch and learn this
first year and then we'll start doing more next year.
But listen, I think I could be wrong about this.
You guys tell me. I think he's only had three plays, yeah,
and and hasn't. It hasn't been lights out, you know,
at all. It hasn't worked. So yeah, well.
Speaker 2 (24:43):
Let's hope it works tonight.
Speaker 6 (24:44):
Man.
Speaker 1 (24:45):
Otherwise I'm blaming you. Why, I have no idea, but
I'll just blame you, all right.
Speaker 6 (24:48):
He who's pitching tonight.
Speaker 1 (24:50):
Who's Steele versus Max schurz Er. Bryce Miller is going
to go to morrow? So Brian Woz coming out of
the bullpen tonight.
Speaker 6 (24:56):
So yeah, how sure? How old is he? Sure's her
sixty eight years old?
Speaker 2 (25:00):
Yeah, he's actually forty one, he's forty one years old.
Speaker 6 (25:03):
All right, man, hey, are you guys? Are you guys
at the game?
Speaker 2 (25:06):
Yes? Yes, absolutely, we'll be there. We will be there.
Speaker 6 (25:09):
Man. All right, well we'll listen, take a deep breath
and enjoy it.
Speaker 2 (25:11):
Okay, not likely, not likely?
Speaker 1 (25:13):
All right, go get him, thanks man. Mike calm grin

Speaker 3 (25:56):
The Raiders worked for me last week. They're going to
work for me again.
Speaker 4 (26:00):
Patrick Mahomes is terrible at covering big spreads.
Speaker 2 (26:04):
He is also four to twelve.
Speaker 4 (26:06):
And one against the spread in division in the last
three years, So Patrick Mahomes is great at covering close games,
not great at covering big spreads.
Speaker 3 (26:15):
It is a twelve point spread.
Speaker 4 (26:17):
Give me the Raiders plus twelve at Kansas City in
this game.
Speaker 2 (26:21):
Vegas plus the points of Kansas City. You like it?
Text in fact, you hate it?

you know, obviously pitched well against Toronto and in the
first game, and you know, Brian's going to be available
out of the pen. You know, I think that's the
plan here going forward. And he's in good spot and
is you know, he's feeling good and and uh, you know,
I think at this point that's where we're going to
see him coming out of the pen.
Speaker 1 (27:19):

Speaker 1 (27:40):
Bryce Miller will pitch tomorrow, Brian wou out of the
bullpen potentially today if needed against Toronto and joining us
right now across the street. Longtime Mariner coach infield coach,
one of the best in baseball, Perry Hill is with
us right now on the beacon plumbing hotline.
Speaker 2 (27:55):
Coach, how you doing?
Speaker 5 (27:58):
How about you guys.
Speaker 1 (28:00):
Out beyond belief that we're fans, so we got nothing
to do with any of this stuff. Man, So tell
us you've been around coach game? Okay, Well, if if
you're telling me, don't don't.
Speaker 2 (28:11):
Stress, and I won't stress.
Speaker 3 (28:12):
Realize, but you've been.
Speaker 1 (28:13):
You've been around this game a long time. Tell me
about how you flush last night. Move on, forget it
and go get a win today in game four.
Speaker 5 (28:23):
Once you leave the clubhouse last night. Once, once the
players and coaches we left the clubhouse last night, it's done.
It's over. There's nothing we can do about it. Can't
go back and replay anything. So there's no things worrying
about it. Uh, you come, we walked in the clubhouse
doors today. It's a brand new day. It's an opportunity
for us to win ball game, and that's what we
plan on doing.
Speaker 4 (28:42):
Does the coaching staff give that message to the team
or there are a bunch of veterans you you know
that they've already they already know that.
Speaker 5 (28:50):
Well, it's it's an over group that we have this year,
you know, with with with g O JP, Josh uh, Julio.
Although he's been the league four years now, Randy, they know,
they know tomorrow's over. It's a new day. Is you
know it's a chance for us to to win the
game and go up three to one.
Speaker 1 (29:09):
Yeah, does the does the vibe feel different from regular
season baseball to playoff baseball? Because I know that everyone
will say things like, hey man, every game is the same.
You take every bull crap as a fan, I'm I'm
freaking man, compared to this versus the regular season. So
do you feel that different vibe in that clubhouse right now?
Speaker 5 (29:29):
Well, usually there's you like five or six reporters and
a couple of news uh news tasks going on. But
now there's like one hundred out here. So the bustle,
the different atmosphere, the different coverage and the national coverage. Uh,
it gets the players pumped up, not that they're not
during the regular season, but you know there's once you
(29:51):
come out of the dug out the tunnel and get
mark up on the field, you know something's different.
Speaker 3 (29:57):
Coach SOFTI mentioned distress.
Speaker 4 (29:58):
How how do you let that stress help you defensively
instead of letting it get the better of you defensively,
what do you communicate to your guys and how how
do they take that.
Speaker 5 (30:12):
Preparation. Yeah, you know, we do a ground ball routine
every day and somewhere in the routine there's probably a
ball or two that is going to happen tonight. He's
going to be hit to you in this fashion in
this situation. Studying hinters tendencies, you know where they hit
the ball more often. It's preparation. If you're prepared, then
(30:35):
you're ready to play any ame. Mother it's Merch thirty,
first opening day, or if it's October sixteenth, game four
of the ac ALCS.
Speaker 1 (30:45):
Well Perry Hill Mariner infield coaches with us and coach.
You're making the move with Leo at second base tonight,
tell us about what went into making that move and
giving him the start at second tonight.
Speaker 5 (30:57):
I wish I could answer that question. That's the question
for Dan. I have nothing to do with the lineups. Yeah,
they give me six infielders and that's my job is
to get them prepared and hope they play well during
the course of the game. But I have nothing to
do with lineup construction.
Speaker 1 (31:11):
Yeah, no doubt. But let me ask you about Leo
and why you think he's ready for this. I mean
you know him better than we do behind the scenes.
I mean we've seen him be clutched for you guys.
Tell us more about Leo behind the scenes and what
he's done preparation wise to be ready for this game tonight.
Speaker 5 (31:25):
Leo's a good, good player. He makes all the plays.
He's fundamentally sound. He'll give you a good at bad.
He'll take a walk, he won't chase, he won't overswing.
He knows who he is. He stays within himself, and
players like that are consistent. I mean he's played for
nine ten years in the minor leagues.
Speaker 2 (31:43):
I mean.
Speaker 5 (31:45):
He's prepared. You know, he's probably hadn't been on this
biggest stage before that. Certainly didn't hurting the other day
against the Tigers.
Speaker 2 (31:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (31:53):
Do you prepare differently before the game based upon the
pitcher that you have on the mound?
Speaker 3 (31:58):
Like you know yesterday.
Speaker 4 (31:59):
Obviously George's we're on a lot of sinkers, you know,
do you prepare for when when you have a sinker
ball pitcher on the mound? Do you prepare differently than
if you have I'm more of a four seemer on
a fastball guy on the mount.
Speaker 5 (32:09):
Well, that's a question for Kevin Seitzer.
Speaker 4 (32:11):
And Edgar I mean defensively, yeah, oh for you Mariners, Yes,
when the Mariners have a different picture on the mount.
Speaker 5 (32:22):
Yes, well, yes, okay, yeah, sorry I misunderested question. Uh yes, yes,
I mean you don't play everybody the same way every day.
Has a lot to do with the pitching plan, and
it has a lot to do how they adjust as
a hitter to the plans. So I mean you may
see Leo play Blaby one way the first inning, and
(32:43):
by the time the sixth inning gets around him, maybe
play him a different way because maybe he's bloody swing
is changing. You know, a lot of these guys are
big home run hitters and swing hard. Maybe they do
the first two three innings, but you know, especially in
a playoff atmosphere, if there's rbies out there on base,
they'll change your swing to get those runs here. So
(33:04):
defensively we have to be in two with that as well.
Speaker 2 (33:06):
I love it.
Speaker 1 (33:07):
Hey, listen, I've never asked you for anything in my life,
and if you give me this, you don't even have
to buy me a Hanika present.
Speaker 2 (33:13):
Just get me a win. Tonight. All right, coach, that's
all I want.
Speaker 5 (33:17):
Okay, all right, they'll be for myself as well.
Speaker 2 (33:20):
Done. Done, Hey, good luck tonight.
Speaker 5 (33:22):
Perry Okay, thanks, okay, thank you, sir.
Speaker 2 (33:25):
You bet.
Speaker 1 (33:26):
Likewise, Perry Hill with us Mariner infield, coach, we got
a couple minutes. What do you say we kind of
revisit more of the Dan Wilson pregame dick with the
media where he did announce that Bryce Miller we'll start
tomorrow and Brian will be coming out of the pen.
Here's Dan's thoughts on tonight's game, starting with a question
about the lineup tonight against the Blue Jays.
Speaker 5 (33:44):
Dan, today's lineup Canzone in the field, Roeblist starting on
the bench.
Speaker 8 (33:48):
Just what kind of one to the mindset to make
that decision for today's game? Yeah, I mean, I think,
you know, we've seen some really good at bats from
from Leo throughout his time with our club, certainly the
game against Detroit, you know, picking up that huge pinch
hit knock, and uh, you know, what he's done at
second base is stellar as well. So getting a chance
(34:09):
to get him in there, and and you know, I
think it should.
Speaker 2 (34:12):
Work out well.
Speaker 8 (34:13):
Dom has played right field all season for US and
and handles that well. And and you know allows Polo
a chance to d h tonight. So you know, just
a good time to get Leo in the lineup and
you have a Game five starter. Yeah, Bryce Miller will
take the hill Forest tomorrow night. And uh, you know,
obviously pitched well against Toronto and in the first game,
(34:33):
and and you know, looking forward to giving him to.
Speaker 2 (34:36):
Baltimore being that Bryce is sorry tomorrow.
Speaker 9 (34:38):
What is the plan for Brian at this point?
Speaker 8 (34:40):
Yeah, you know, Brian's gonna be available out of the pen,
and and you know, I think that's the plan here
going forward. And and uh, you know, he's he's in
good spot and is you know, he's feeling good and
and you know, I think at this point that's that's
where we're gonna see him coming out of the pen.
Speaker 4 (34:55):
Dan's Victor oblis full strength after going into the board's
kind of hard yesterday today.
Speaker 8 (35:00):
Yeah, yeah, he's fine. You know, a great catch, great effort,
which is you know what we always see from Victor,
and as we talked about last night, sort of reminiscent
of that play in San Francisco. But you know, going
in there hard but but you know, that's that's the
effort you always get from Victor Dan.
Speaker 2 (35:16):
What what are.
Speaker 10 (35:17):
The challenges that Brian might now face transitioning into a
role that he hasn't had, at least at the big
league level. We know he did back in college.
Speaker 8 (35:24):
Yeah, you know, I think obviously it's it's a different
kind of a role. You know, he had a chance
to do it in the All Star Game, so maybe
a little bit of experience coming and coming out of
a pen. But uh, you know, again this is this
is the time of year where you ask people to
do things that that they're not as comfortable doing or
they haven't done as much. But uh, you know, he's
(35:45):
got a wealth of people that will help him. You know,
the Rock Uh, Logan Gilbert did it recently. They can help.
So I think I think he'll be in good shape.
And again I think he's excited to get back out.
Speaker 2 (35:58):
Okay, there you go.
Speaker 1 (35:59):
So Bryce Miller starting tomorrow, and it sounds like when
you said going forward that Brian Woo's gonna be in
the bullpen, maybe even for.
Speaker 2 (36:05):
The World Series if they make it.
Speaker 1 (36:07):
We'll see, but that sets up potentially Dick Bryce Miller
tomorrow Logan Gilbert again on Sunday, and then on Monday night,
you're either gonna have your pick of George Kirby in
Game seven who pitched yesterday, or potentially Luis Castillo on
four days rest on Monday night in Toronto.
Speaker 4 (36:25):
If it goes that far, you have at least a
wash every game, if not the advantage. So you've got
a wash when Gossman's on the mound. You've got an
advantage when everybody else is on the mound. So there's
no reason why they shouldn't take care of this series.
Speaker 1 (36:39):
Well, tonight they got the big advantage, I think with
Castillo and Scherzer. So we'll see game number four coming
up tonight at five thirty eight. Rick Newheisl's going to
join us and talk about a fairly important Husky game
as well. On Saturday next on ninety three three KJRFM.
Speaker 10 (36:58):
You're home for college football set as is live with
CBS Sports analyst Rick new Heiseel, powered by Taco Time.
Hungry at Taco Time, It's easy to create exactly what
you're craving, and we wouldn't have it any other way.
How do you Taco Time customize your mealing order? Ahead
on the Taco time Northwest Taco time. Time for something
different now with Rick new Heisel, here's Softy and Dick.
Speaker 1 (37:21):
All right, we are back at Jimmy's getting ready for
a Game four of the ALCS.
Speaker 2 (37:26):
And I was just thinking about this.
Speaker 1 (37:27):
At the last time the Mariners were in the American
League Championship Series, the Huskies had a guy who had
a connection to UCLA. Now the M's are back in
the ALCS, and the Huskies have a guy who's got.
Speaker 2 (37:37):
A connection to UCLA and Jed Fish.
Speaker 1 (37:39):
Maybe that's all this takes, just hiring a guy with
a connection to UCLA. Rick new Heidel joins us right now,
Curtesy at Taco time, How are you?
Speaker 6 (37:46):
Man?
Speaker 9 (37:47):
I am well, And I just want to ask Dick there,
what level of anxiety do we have with our good friends.
Speaker 4 (37:54):
Rick, you don't even you can't even fath it's beyond
it's off.
Speaker 3 (38:00):
Whatever the chart was, it broke.
Speaker 2 (38:03):
Listen, there's a Softy.
Speaker 9 (38:05):
I want you to relax. You guys are going to
this series A yeah, you're going to the Fall Classic.
Speaker 5 (38:12):
Just relax.
Speaker 1 (38:13):
There's two reasons why I would bring an extra pair
of underwear with me for the game. Today, the game,
and the fact that I'm an old man now at
fifty two years old. Double whammy, it is. It's a
double whammy. Well, Rick, before we get your thoughts on
everything happening on the college football world, man, give us
a take on this, man. I mean, we talked to
Mike Holgrin about this from just a coach's perspective, a
(38:34):
teacher's perspective, and again, probably different in football because.
Speaker 2 (38:37):
You have the week off.
Speaker 1 (38:38):
But flushing that turn of a game last night and
just moving the hell on, how did these guys do
that and forget about it?
Speaker 9 (38:46):
Well, he wasn't going to be as easy as it
felt in Toronto. I mean, so now you're back to
playing playoff baseball where you've got to scratch out runs
and find ways to win. But you've got a rocket
crowd behind you, and let's entertain them. You've got a
number of hot bats in that lineup, and I think
that who you got the rock tonight?
Speaker 5 (39:06):
Caestillo.
Speaker 2 (39:06):
Yep, come on, man, let's go. Let's get up three one,
let's go.
Speaker 4 (39:11):
Well, Rick, Friday night, we had split screens, right we
were watching the Mariners win over Detroit in the siding game,
and we were also watching Demon Williams put up Husky history,
and I'm wondering if there's a quarterback in college football
that has a better combination of legs and arm than
the one we have here in Seattle.
Speaker 9 (39:33):
No, I don't think so. And I told you, guys,
I knew he could run, but when I went to
practice and saw that gifted throwing arm, I was like,
this guy's special. You know, Ohio State had a nice plan,
and I'm sure Michigan will try to emulate it to
keep him in the pocket and such. But that guy's really,
(39:53):
really a good player, and Jed's got to be having
a blast calling plays with him.
Speaker 1 (39:58):
Yeah, well, let's just keep on that team with this
game with Michigan, because I mean, guys, I gotta be
honest with you. I would take Demon Williams over Bryce
Underwood right now ten times out of nine, not even close.
I mean, Underwood may eventually, who knows, be the better star,
but I think Demon is way ahead of him. And
then number two, I see rick a Big ten team
in Michigan who's third in the conference against the run
(40:19):
on defense. But then I see a team that gave
up one hundred and sixty yards to a walk on
on Saturday at USC So what happened?
Speaker 9 (40:26):
That's exactly right. Listen, you know Jed and I met
each other when we were both on the Raven staff
and the defensive coordinator with the Rex Ryan well Wink Martindale,
the coordinator for Michigan, is a huge Rex Ryan guy.
He's like the third brother with Rob and Rex and such.
So you saw that they were able to run the
(40:48):
ball well over two hundred yards. As you mentioned the
backup running back having one hundred and sixty of them.
This won't shock me at all that Jed will have
a plan to run the ball against Michigan.
Speaker 6 (40:59):
And again, as you mentioned.
Speaker 9 (41:01):
Bryce Underwood is a very talented guy. The only advantage
he has over Demon is that he's bigger, but Demon
is gifted as a is way more gifted in terms
of the amounts of types of throws that he has
command over. Bryce is a fastball pitcher. Demon has every
pitch in the book.
Speaker 4 (41:20):
How would you evaluate the job Searan Moore has done
at Michigan has head coach so far, I.
Speaker 5 (41:26):
Give him a C plus.
Speaker 9 (41:28):
I mean he got handed.
Speaker 6 (41:30):
You know, a national championship team.
Speaker 9 (41:32):
There have been and obviously the victory over Ohio State
last year was is the feather in his cap? And
then they cap that off with a win over Alabama.
But this is this is a different this is a
different animal, and I still don't see enough development in
the offense to call it anything higher than C plus.
Speaker 2 (41:51):
Right.
Speaker 1 (41:52):
Well, Rick, I'm not sure if you're watching this or
not at all, but Jacob mon wh who's a linebacker
for you, dub is suing the X the ncuble A
because he wants another year. He's part of that five
for five lawsuit right against the NCUBLEA and right now
he doesn't have it yet, So that means he's only
got two more games left to play in the regular
(42:12):
season before he burns the red shirt. So Jed's got
to figure out which two games to play him in
until he hear's back from the nc double A. Is
this Michigan game one of those games that you would pick?
Speaker 5 (42:25):
Yeah? I think so.
Speaker 9 (42:26):
I mean, just given the fact that this is a
leg up in the conference standings, gives Washington a real
chance to make a stretch run. And I know we
say the games they remember played in November, but when
you win in the big House, it's an incredible shot
in the arm for the rest of your season.
Speaker 4 (42:43):
What do you make of what you saw at Augsin
with Indiana on Saturday.
Speaker 9 (42:48):
It wasn't an accident. It wasn't an accident, and neither
was an accident that he got twelve million a year today.
That was a phenomenal job by coach Signetty. He's done,
you know, a miracle there at Indiana, and I'm happy
as I can be for him. But yeah, they kept
their edges on defense, they were stout offensively, and Mendoza
(43:10):
has an NFL arm.
Speaker 2 (43:11):
I'm happy he's staying in Indiana.
Speaker 1 (43:13):
I mean, I don't give two licks for that Indiana football,
but I am thrilled because I'm getting tired Rick all
the coaches moving around from team to team, and I'm
glad he's staying there.
Speaker 2 (43:23):
Do you think I am right?
Speaker 1 (43:24):
Would this start maybe a trend you think of coaches saying, look,
if that guy can stay at Indie freaking Anna, I
can stay where I'm at.
Speaker 9 (43:32):
Well, I think the trend's going to be for athletic
directors to wrap up coaches that are successful. I think
Candas story riat Vanderbilt's going to try to do the
same thing with Clark Lee Eli Drinkwitz is going to
get a big offer from Missouri to stay right there,
and that's great for the entirety of the program and
the longevity of success for the program. You know, Signetti
(43:53):
took a program that had one win in its history
over a top five team, and that was back in
nineteen sixty seven at home. They get this win on
the road. That's just remarkable stuff. He's well deserving.
Speaker 3 (44:05):
Well, I only care what it means for Washington.
Speaker 4 (44:07):
So is this good for Washington that Indiana's relevant or
is it better for Washington had Signetti just gone and
to a great program already in Penn State and then
Indiana just floats away.
Speaker 9 (44:21):
No, I think it's you know, the Big Ten needs
four teams that are you know, in the top twenty
right now. With Penn State's kind of just falling off
the cliff, there's some question about the depth of the
Big Ten, and you know, Washington and isn't getting nearly
enough credit. Again, they didn't have a real stout non
(44:41):
conference schedule. But that's why this game is so important.
They've got a chance to stop stamp themselves as authentic
with a victory in ann Arbor.
Speaker 2 (44:50):
Why aren't they getting more credit? You think at five
and one.
Speaker 9 (44:54):
They just they just didn't have the big win in
the non con you know, and when that that kind
of slows down the progress. They weren't part of the
original top twenty five. Another flaw on the system that
we have these predeterminations as to who's going to be good.
So I think this is a real chance for Washington
get what they deserve, which is to be considered amongst
(45:17):
the best teams in the country.
Speaker 1 (45:18):
Well, I'll tell you what, man, there's a report out
of Gainesville, and I think we've all seen this coming,
that Billy Napier might be kind of getting close to
the end.
Speaker 2 (45:25):
Here.
Speaker 1 (45:26):
USA Today reporting that Scott Strickland, who's the eighty at Florida,
met with multiple boosters on Tuesday and then on three
came out and said, no, it's just they're big, they're
big gun. They're one big booster down there, and that
the vetting process of candidates to replace him has already begun.
I got to assume if jet Fish beats Michigan, he's
six and one after what he inherited, is he going
to be on Florida's radar.
Speaker 9 (45:48):
Oh, he'll definitely be on Florida's radar, but Pat Shun
will be Press radar. They'll find a way to have
a conversation and hopefully for all of us say hey,
let's let's stay here for as long as we can.
Speaker 2 (46:04):
Is Kaylen de Boor's ship righted?
Speaker 4 (46:05):
He's got another test this week, at least it's at
home against Tennessee.
Speaker 9 (46:10):
I think the ship is absolutely right and he's proving
what he's proven at every place he's ever been, that
he's got demand of an offense when he has a
quarter but he can trust and he certainly has one
in this kid, Ty Simpson. You know, Ty's dad is
the head coach at Tennessee, Martin the Skyhawks, and so
this kid grew up around it. I expect for Kaylin
(46:32):
to finish the season, get to the college football playoff,
and Alabama to say this is exactly what we thought
we were getting.
Speaker 2 (46:39):
Rick.
Speaker 1 (46:40):
I don't think we've spoken since James Franklin got fired
because it was a low Was it Northwestern last week
that they lost too?
Speaker 2 (46:47):
Is that correct? And then it was it was it
was Jerry.
Speaker 1 (46:50):
Jerry drove him to one foot to the grave and
then Northwestern finished him off. Did they make the right
call by firing James Franklin?
Speaker 9 (46:59):
I hate, I hate it, but when you're taking money
from boosters to augment your program, you also have to
take their opinions, and that basically I think that figot
of cash was about ready to get turned off if
Pat Kraft didn't make the deal. So you know, I listen.
I was on a Rose Bowl team back in nineteen
(47:20):
eighty three that was O three and one and ended
up eating Illinois in the Rose Bowl, so I know
you can turn things around. I would have liked for
James Franklin, and I think James Franklin deserved the chance
to turn it around.
Speaker 2 (47:32):
Who fits there?
Speaker 3 (47:34):
It was not going to be Signetty, Is it Matt
Rule or who is it?
Speaker 9 (47:38):
Well Matt Rule. I think if Pat Kraft had his
brothers they work together at Temple, that would be the
guy that he'd like to have. But they are going
to be people that will push back because Rule, as
good as he's been at, you know, doing reclamation projects
at places like Temple and Baylor, he has yet to
really you know, show championship medal, and that might be
(47:59):
more boosters saying that's exactly what we just had and
let go of. So let's find a championship guy. But again,
if this trend continues where everybody who's got that kind
of DNA at least on their resume, if they keep
getting better deals, you're gonna get stuck having to take
somebody that you just believe and get there.
Speaker 1 (48:18):
Well, Rick Newhuzzle's with us, and guys, I just let's
just go back a second, because we all know who
the hottest name in college football coaching is right now,
Jerry fing Newheizel.
Speaker 2 (48:29):
I mean, dude, are you kidding me?
Speaker 9 (48:30):
Like I'm available for the Penn State job. I'll just
say that right now.
Speaker 1 (48:35):
I mean, does he I want you to answer this
question like it's the three of us talking at the
five twenty bar and Grill having a drink.
Speaker 2 (48:42):
Does he have a shot?
Speaker 9 (48:43):
That's always how I answer.
Speaker 1 (48:44):
Okay, does he have a shot again that you see
all lead job full time, either staying on his coordinator
or getting the getting the big job.
Speaker 9 (48:52):
I don't think so. I would love it, and I
know he could do it, and I just think they're
desperate because of the hiring Deshaun without experience that they're
going to be forced to hire somebody with experience. The
guy who's going to be chief on that search firm
is a search committee is a guy the named Casey Wasserman.
(49:13):
And I think Casey's going to be looking somebody that's
got a little uh more gray hair than Jerry Dead.
Speaker 2 (49:19):
Casey Wasserman is also Jedfish's agent. By the way, Doug
Hendrickson works for him.
Speaker 9 (49:23):
To sing, you know, yeah, there you go. I'll just
feed off of that, and I have everybody else on
the search and everybody else on the search committee at
UCLA is a Clay Ksey Wasserman client.
Speaker 2 (49:35):
How about that. I'll just you know, I'll just bounce
off that.
Speaker 11 (49:38):
Then.
Speaker 4 (49:38):
I mean, I don't see any reason why somebody would
go from Washington to UCLA, especially with the financial situation
ucl IN is. But am I wrong? I mean, is
that is that a place that Jedfish would do? You
think would investigate?
Speaker 9 (49:52):
Well, they'd have to make some real overtures and promises
about resources. You know, I've coached it, both of them,
and it was night and day in terms of the
kind of help and support I got from the from
the administration at Washington as compared to the administration at UCLA.
Speaker 1 (50:10):
Yeah, all right, let's do this before you go. Uh
talk with Time pick of the week. You got back
on the bus. You've won two in a row with
wake Forest.
Speaker 9 (50:17):
Once again, you guys did not start this program by
announcing my victory last week. Once again, you're only announcing
it at the beginning when I failed. You're right bringing
that up.
Speaker 2 (50:28):
And I have an excuse.
Speaker 1 (50:29):
I'm completely off my game with the Mariners right now
and my focus is in the toilet, So I apologize.
Speaker 5 (50:34):
To worry about the MS.
Speaker 9 (50:35):
I'm telling you the Fall Classic. Oh Geezcko Time Burritos.
Speaker 5 (50:41):
That's right's happening.
Speaker 2 (50:42):
That's a good comedy. You one with wake Forest. Who
do you like this week?
Speaker 9 (50:47):
All right? I got three that I like, but I'm
gonna go with Casey Keeler. Now, you guys may not
be familiar with that name. He was the coach of
Sam Houston won the National Championship when the the FCS
played in the spring. He's now the coach at uh Temple.
They got seat by one point by Navy last week.
(51:08):
They're down in Charlotte. They're an eleven and a half
point favorite. They're three and three. They're gonna make a pole.
They're gonna wipe the floor with the forty nine ers.
Speaker 1 (51:16):
I love it, Temple the Bill Cosby's minus eleven and
a half against Charlotte. I love it all right, Rick,
go get him good stuff and we'll talk.
Speaker 2 (51:22):
About Rick all I see you guys, all right.
Speaker 1 (51:26):
Man, Rick new Heisel with us on the radio show.
We got a couple minutes. Julio Rodriguez, by the way,
met with the media today. He was asked by a
reporter what it would mean to see this team in
the World Series this season.
Speaker 10 (51:36):
A lot lessions over the years, but they've never finched
a little series. You committed long term to the team
and you're two wins away from taking the team where
it's never been.
Speaker 2 (51:45):
What would that mean to you personally?
Speaker 11 (51:46):
Well, I mean the war, you know, like like I
kind of told it to Tyler, like that was the
reason why, you know, like I signed here because I
know I got to I got to know the fan
base and like the hunger that the city had for
like a championship. But I feel like that really motivated me.
You know, I feel like that's a that was being
a big challenge I don't shy away from challenges, and
I feel like that's something that like really motivated me
(52:09):
to be here and just kind of saw seeing how
everybody was like really into it and like kind of
motivated to like bringing a Championship of War series appearance
and things like that, and like, once you're in it,
you know you gotta you gotta go for everything. And
I feel like we're in a really good position to
get to that spot right now.
Speaker 1 (52:25):
I'll tell you what we talked earlier about guys like
Suarez and a Rose Arena the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (52:28):
So Huio Rodriguez has been fine.
Speaker 1 (52:30):
Eight eighty eight ops, three home runs, including a big
bomb yesterday that put these guys up to nothing.
Speaker 2 (52:36):
So he is living up to the moment, no question
about it.
Speaker 4 (52:39):
Yes, but he wasn't great last series, So I mean
it is really just that's why we talked about the
sample size. You know, a guy can have one great
game and all of a sudden, his playoff stats look good.
Speaker 3 (52:53):
So I'm still holding out hope on guys like Randy A.
Speaker 4 (52:56):
Roserain and Victor Roeblace and guys that just haven't come
around yet. They give me that three for four day
with a home run and all of a sudden, your
numbers look okay for the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (53:04):
Well, I just I don't know if the Mariners offense
can unload on anybody at this part because their numbers
are so different. But what they can do is get
phenomenal pitching. And like we said earlier, man you're gonna
lose a game, you may as well lose a game.
Speaker 2 (53:14):
And rest everybody. And that's exactly what happened last night.
Speaker 1 (53:17):
Turd Ferguson Vargas, Luke Jackson, Brash Spire, Munno's all the
big guns, the mop who's now the man.
Speaker 2 (53:24):
We're all out for tonight.
Speaker 1 (53:26):
So they're all available for this game, this evening against Toronto.
Simply put, got to get this done. Do not go
back to Toronto. Do not give these guys the chance
to tie this thing up and say that you gotta
win it in Toronto. If you're gonna win it, wrap
it up tonight. Go up three games to one, and
let's see what happens tomorrow. We're gonna break. We got
cracking hockey Ottawa and a boys pregame coming up with
(53:47):
Everett al and Mike Benton coming up. In a matter
of minutes here and then face off at four o'clock
and then tomorrow back on the air at three right
before game number four of the ALCS Game five. Sorry,
and don't forget chucking buck out the post game show
to follow after tonight's game on kJ RCA.
