Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's time for our weekday conversation with college football analyst
Petros Papa Nakas.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Not that I'm a smart guy, I'm stupid.
Speaker 1 (00:07):
Brought to you by Sweet James Accident Attorneys forty.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
If you're hurting.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
An accident, called Sweet James right away at eight hundred,
five hundred and fifty two hundred. Sweet James will be
sweet to you, but tough on insurance companies that will
bully you.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
I don't know Bush.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Now with Petros Peers, Dave Softy Muller.
Speaker 4 (00:33):
Alrighty, boys and girls, here we going. I'm busy, busy
Friday night right here on ninety three to three KJURFM,
A chance to welcome in let's face it, one of
our broadcast heroes, an absolute legend in sunny southern California,
one half of the fabled Petros and Money Show, Greek
American of the Year, Father of the Month, Husband of
(00:54):
the Day, and my friend Petros Papadacus. Courtesy Oh James Justice.
Speaker 5 (01:02):
Sweet James can come through for you if you've ever
been in a car accident or a motorcycle accident, if
you've been bitten by a dog.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
He knows how to hold.
Speaker 5 (01:09):
That insurance company accountable. Give him a call to get
your medical care taking care of your life back together
and your car fixed eight hundred and nine million, eight
hundred nine million, or sweet James.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
Oh Man, there's a lot going on back here in Seattle.
You kind of feel bad for the dogs, dude. Friday Night,
Demon Williams puts on a show against Rutgers and nobody
sees it because the EM's had a fifteen inning Alds
clinching game against the Tigers.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
How about that?
Speaker 5 (01:38):
Well, I mean it's exciting, right, I mean it's got
to be really exciting out there for you guys. I
mean I see people crying in the stands. I see
people crying on their couch. They see a lot of tears. Yeah,
and then the stupid Maclamore song and the big dumper
and all that. It's very The trident, which looks kind
(02:00):
of dangerous, reminds me of Arizona's turnover cactus.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
Yes, that they put the ball on.
Speaker 4 (02:08):
I've always thought they should dip the turn that the
Helmo said, turnover trident. They should dip the trident in
like uh pro paane and light the end of it
on fire.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
I thought you were gonna say batter and make it
like a corn doll.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
That works too, man.
Speaker 5 (02:24):
No, I mean that's it's great, it's exciting. I am
concerned about you and your health, Like I didn't think
you were going to make it through the year Washington
played for the title, right with Kaylin de Boor. I mean,
it's just negative or positive like that one year that
you guys lost every game with Ty Willingham and I
called like six of them, Oh, negative or positive. I
(02:47):
don't like if it's too much. I worry about you, you.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
Know what I mean?
Speaker 5 (02:51):
Yeah, the extreme, you know, I need you know, I
need Washington and like the Alamo Bowl for you to
be normal, you know.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
What I mean.
Speaker 5 (02:59):
And I'm really with the Mariners that's even rarer than
anything you can think of with the University of Washington
because they've never played in the World Series at all. Right,
So I am I have concerns about your health and
your well being and your ability to handle this maturely
(03:20):
like an adult.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
And I wish you luck. I wish you luck.
Speaker 5 (03:25):
On the other hand, you know, here in the Dodgers,
it's just like they just expect to win every night. Right,
the starter goes the whole game and all this stuff
that doesn't usually happen. And all four of their pitchers
are awesome. These four guys that they brought into paid
a lot of money to to pitch in the postseason
are all up and running. So we might end up
being adversaries. Not that I care as much as you do,
(03:47):
but yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
Yeah, well what is that?
Speaker 4 (03:49):
Let me just ask you right now, what is the
passion like of the Dodger fan base right now?
Speaker 5 (03:55):
Well, it's always you know, I mean, we're so close
to it because where the Dodgers stay, So we're at
the games and we're around the players, and then we're
around people that are around the players a lot more,
and so you get a real vibe for what's going
on with the team. And then you know, we have
all this extra programming when the Dodgers are doing well.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
And in the playoffs.
Speaker 5 (04:20):
So what happens with that is, you know, they take
calls like I don't take any calls on the radio ever,
almost never. And uh so they do take calls though,
because that's what this time of year is about. And
the calls are like a bummer. People are like, you know,
I threw an LA hat in the in the coffin
with my dad died or you know, I threw uh,
(04:42):
you know, my Clayton Kershaw's first game was the was
the last time I was with my little brother.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
And it's like, okay, one eight hundred and.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
It's a lot of them can't handle it.
Speaker 5 (04:55):
Man, Well it's not that I can't handle it.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
Well you I'm not saying going annoys me, but it's like,
you know, where do you go from there?
Speaker 4 (05:04):
Have you ever had an emotional moment, whether your father
or your brother.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
Life is an emotional moment.
Speaker 5 (05:08):
I can barely function, but emotions bothered me a great
deal because I feel them very intensely. That being said,
it's what you asked me what the tone was, and
maybe I'm too close to it because I'm on the station.
That's what I qualified this with, yes, And then I
had to say, it's a lot of calls about death
and people like, you know, my grandfather loves the Dodgers.
(05:32):
He's dead, you know, Vince Gully's dead. Everybody's dead, well
not everybody, I mean, Yo Yoshi Yamamoto is very much alive.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
Last night.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
Yeah, hey, well, how do you think it's going to
be up here?
Speaker 4 (05:48):
If these guys, there's gonna be a lot of that.
So like blubbering, and you hear it from me. My
dad died three years ago. You realize that since my
dad has.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Passed a lot, let's take a call on it.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
Here we go, Seattle, you're on the air.
Speaker 4 (06:01):
Well, since my father has passed away, the Mariners have
ended their playoff streak, the Huskies have played for the
National Championship, and now the Mariners are on the doorstep
of the World Series.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
Since my father passed away.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
He's an angel on your shoulder.
Speaker 5 (06:15):
Give us a call, hey by to hear about your
sad void in life and how it's being filled. That's
right by this sports team that is charging you money.
It's a complete and total transactional.
Speaker 4 (06:31):
Yes, the Dodgers and the Mariners are like just a
big giant make a wish foundation for baseball fans everywhere.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
As long as you pay for deliverer of dreams.
Speaker 4 (06:42):
Well, hey, dude, how about all the firings in college football?
First of all, James Franklin out your guy, Jonathan Smith out,
Trent Bray at Oregon State out Wisconsin fans want Luke
Fickles head on a stick in Madison for what's going
on out there. Uh, Desjean Foster has already fired at UCLA.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
This is crazy, man.
Speaker 5 (07:06):
Yeah, I'm sad about Jonathan Smith. I had high hopes
for my Michigan State spartans. I'm sad about Trent Bray too.
Why because I've always I liked his dad. I did
his games when he was a backer. I respected him
as a player and as a coordinator and had a
good time with him at an Oregon State recruiting event
(07:27):
that I was paid to be at that. They never
actually paid me for any other questions.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
They never paid you for that talk you gave.
Speaker 5 (07:35):
Do Not only did they not pay me, but they
didn't they didn't reimburse me for the.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
Flight and the hotel.
Speaker 4 (07:41):
Come on, no, Well you want me to put a
note into Scott Barnes the age, I would love that.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
I would more than have.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
Me a couple thousand dollars from like three years ago.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
Well, because I remember you, and.
Speaker 5 (07:52):
I remember asking Jonathan Smith about it and he just shrugged.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
I'm sorry, man, like that department, I guess I find
out for you.
Speaker 6 (08:01):
Yeah, it was.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
Well, you know, it's a day before he's got to
coach again.
Speaker 4 (08:04):
Was was Scott Barnes the ad there when you did
the talk I thing.
Speaker 3 (08:08):
So, yeah, Scotty Barnes.
Speaker 5 (08:09):
Yeah, well he was with us for a while. He was, Yeah,
for a long time. He played for the Toronto Raptors.
I think he still does.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
Not different, that's different.
Speaker 4 (08:15):
Oh, I think he was here with Todd Turner. God,
I have to go back and remember about the Yeah,
he used to have a big old staff. But yeah,
I'll get another that's not that's wrong, that's not right.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
It's terrible.
Speaker 3 (08:28):
Yeah, well what about I mean those guys getting fired?
What about my two thousand dollars?
Speaker 2 (08:34):
It's like, what was.
Speaker 5 (08:36):
These guys got paid to go away? They paid me
to show up and never even pay.
Speaker 4 (08:40):
Yeah, what's the movie where the guy says I want
my two dollars?
Speaker 2 (08:44):
Is that Once Bitten? What the hell was that movie?
Speaker 3 (08:45):
I don't know. That's just you have the stupidest movie, right.
Speaker 2 (08:48):
No, I don't, man, you know what. That's not fair.
How come you can reference movies and I can't.
Speaker 5 (08:52):
Because I'm a man of culture, okay and polish?
Speaker 2 (08:57):
Oh god, well I will. I'll get a note down there.
That's not right. I gotta tell you.
Speaker 4 (09:01):
I am actually genuinely concerned about the future of Oregon
State football big time.
Speaker 3 (09:07):
Yeah, hashtag me too.
Speaker 5 (09:09):
I I don't know, you know, I'm a beaven heart.
I go back with Evanson Bernard and uh Enoki brector Field,
Steven Jackson, ta Vita Mawalla, Ken Simon too. I love uh,
I love Oregon State, and I hope they figure it out.
But yeah, the coach is getting fired. I think a
(09:30):
lot a big part of it. Well, first of all,
I mean, look what happened at uc LA. It's almost
like the two coordinators and the head coach were a
ballast holding down a hot air balloe and you know,
you cut it and all of a sudden they just
take off and oh, sorry, my phone.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
That's right. I hate everybody.
Speaker 6 (09:51):
I know.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
There's a way to turn that off.
Speaker 5 (09:53):
By the way, Yeah, okay, all right, you know it's
been a I just got off the phone with Nevada.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
Yeah, okay, sorry, stop calling me. Just turn off the rigger.
Speaker 3 (10:02):
Dude, I am hitting the thing on my watch.
Speaker 2 (10:06):
Well that's what you get for wearing a watch like
a douche.
Speaker 5 (10:08):
It's not the watch, it's the computer that I'm sitting behind.
Speaker 2 (10:13):
A watch are you wearing an Apple Watch.
Speaker 3 (10:15):
Don't you wear an Apple watch?
Speaker 5 (10:16):
It doesn't work out my heart well, it happens softy
that because I have crippling anxiety and my heart rate,
you know, just sitting somewhere could be like one twenty
because my mind is like a runaway elephant, and I'm
very unhappy I have to check my heart rate through
(10:37):
an effing watch.
Speaker 4 (10:40):
You need to call the Dodger post game show and
get a little therapy. Who does the Dodger Post game Show?
By the way, who's the host.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
Of Kates and Davidvesse?
Speaker 2 (10:51):
Here you go, you can call them and ghellttle therapy.
Speaker 5 (10:53):
Yeah, well they're very both, very close friends of mine.
I think I have to wait on line.
Speaker 4 (10:58):
You just talked about all the SOB story is man,
why not take stories from people that asked.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
Me why I wear an Apple Watch? You called me
a douche.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
I did call you a douche.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
I still have I hope you sit on that try it.
Speaker 2 (11:09):
Of all the people that would wear an Apple.
Speaker 4 (11:11):
Watch, you'd be the last guy that I would assume
you would be alone wearing an Apple Watch. Hey, who's
gonna hire James Franklin? Who should who should roll the
dice and hire James Franklin. I think he's a pretty
good coach, don't you.
Speaker 5 (11:23):
Uh yeah, I, uh yeah. I haven't had the best
interactions with him really.
Speaker 3 (11:32):
Well. One time I was with to Marco Murray.
Speaker 5 (11:35):
Yes, and I was training to Marco Murray.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
Well you know what to.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
Call t okay, gotcha?
Speaker 5 (11:43):
I'm sorry, Well, we weren't doing jump squats a freaking idiot,
God are you stupid?
Speaker 6 (11:50):
Stupid idiot? No, stumming it in.
Speaker 4 (11:53):
So hang on a second, I gotta find it. I
got to bring that up, all right, I'll sit here.
The greatest bits in the history of radio, go ahead.
Speaker 5 (12:04):
Uh you know who that is, by the way, Dick
Dick Dick Baird Baird. Yeah, I didn't want to say
Dick Fane.
Speaker 3 (12:12):
This kid doesn't look Jewish, that's right.
Speaker 5 (12:15):
Well we all know that. So I was training to
Marco Murray. We were doing an Illinois Nebraska game. No no, Illinois,
Illinois Penn State. And he shook James Franklin's hand and
like then they got in like this weird like handshake
wrestling thing like and it wasn't like for fun.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
It was like they were.
Speaker 5 (12:36):
Like like a thumb war Yeah, but like but like
you know, kind of like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Carl Weathers
in Predator.
Speaker 3 (12:44):
But no, but not like in a jovial way.
Speaker 5 (12:49):
And that was shocking, Like I was like, WHOA, what
a tough guy there.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
That's weird.
Speaker 5 (12:54):
Yeah, but you know, I mean it's hard to say
that he hasn't had success.
Speaker 3 (12:59):
You look at what he's how much he's won.
Speaker 4 (13:02):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
I don't think Oklahoma was ever going to.
Speaker 5 (13:05):
Fire Bob Stoops for not winning the big game, right,
But now it's kind of like you get a you
get a leg up in the coaching search and somebody
if somebody steps up and pays the buyout. I guess
the rumor in this case was that it was Adidas.
I mean, Lincoln Riley would have been fired if somebody
(13:26):
would have paid the buyout. It's just so huge, and
that it's a terrible albatross around us he's neck, even
though they're improved this year. I mean, if somebody will
pay the buyout when you get into a free fall,
then and he must have pissed somebody off, right, yeah,
Like yeah, like I I.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
A donor, A big donor.
Speaker 5 (13:46):
Yeah, in a gingerly way. I rep maybe Adidas Uh
in a gingerly way. I reference that in the UH
on the Morning Show today with LeVar Arrington, who's mister
Penn State and he very much likes James Franklin. And
you know, the star player types usually have a different
view of everybody. I know that's your experience too, then,
(14:06):
you know, I mean Matt Lioner will defend Clay Helton,
Lincoln Riley, you know, Steve Sarkisian Lane Kiff, and anybody
who came through USC and aft it up over the
years because you get treated well by whoever the administration is.
And I would assume it's that way with LeVar. I'm
not close enough to know what happened behind the scenes
(14:26):
with Franklin, but it seemed like once he faltered, they
were pretty.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
Eager to get rid of it. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (14:31):
So, but I don't know who's going to hire him,
And I'm sad about Jonathan, but somebody will hire him.
Maybe he'll go back to Corvallis.
Speaker 4 (14:39):
I'm kidding, honestly, do you think that's even remotely possible?
Speaker 3 (14:43):
I think it ended in an acrimonious way.
Speaker 4 (14:46):
So, which is too bad considering his ties to that
university very terrible, and you.
Speaker 5 (14:52):
Know, maybe I don't know what's going to happen with him,
But all these guys get paid so much to go away,
and then they take a concer jobs so they can
still get paid because consulting is not like being on
somebody's staff. So they go hide at their friends program
for a year while they sit on fifty million dollars
or something, and then they get a job in about
(15:15):
a year or two, or they do the media and
then they get a job in about a year or two,
like Dan Mullen who's doing well at UNLV. So I
don't feel bad as bad for these guys. It's truly
the assistants and the families. That's the crappy part.
Speaker 2 (15:28):
Yeah, well, you know, I don't know how.
Speaker 3 (15:31):
Much you look.
Speaker 5 (15:31):
Kurt Signetti's getting everybody fired. You turn I mean he
turned around Indiana football. I mean, who would ever think that.
But they could go to Eugene and win Indiana. I mean,
it's even more impressive than what Gary Barnett did at Northwestern.
And people remember that, we'll remember that forever. But what's
happening at Indiana is even weirder, and people are going
(15:52):
to look at these coaches and say, well, why aren't
you like Kurt Signetti, you know, why can't we win
right away? Why can't you turn it around right away?
Here's the portal, here's the money, right, go get them.
And I think that's why you're seeing such early firing.
Speaker 4 (16:04):
Well, honestly, I think what Jed's doing up here man
has been pretty impressive. They're five and one with the
one loss to Ohio State. They probably should be ranked.
They'll be ranked if they beat the Wolverines of the
Big House on Saturday. And I don't know how much
of the USC Michigan game you saw, but man, the
Trojans do They had to walk on running back just
run all over that Michigan defense.
Speaker 2 (16:23):
So I don't know.
Speaker 4 (16:24):
This kind of feels like if the Huskies are ever
going to get a win in that stadium for the
first time in a get jillion years, it feels like Saturday.
Speaker 5 (16:30):
Yeah, the young quarterback could be reeling, right, I mean
he was underwhelming.
Speaker 3 (16:34):
Underwood was underwhelming, yes, And.
Speaker 5 (16:38):
I thought Michigan's edges would cause more trouble for USC
like they have for some other teams, but that didn't happen.
So you got to give USC credit. It's always a
big deal to beat Michigan. And you know, I think
also an element in that is that we're also learning
and you guys know this at Washington.
Speaker 3 (16:57):
I'm sure I made the point on the show.
Speaker 5 (16:58):
Coming all the way across the country and playing in
some big ass stadium is hard for the East Coast
guys too. You know, walking down the tunnel in the
coliseum is not like taking the field in Stanford.
Speaker 3 (17:11):
Let's let's be honest about it.
Speaker 5 (17:13):
So I think there's an element of that there, and
I think there will be an element of that in
the UH in the situation for Washington going the opposite direction,
but because that is a crazy place to play, although
it is Rolls bull esque as far as noise and
all that goes, but I think they're teetering. If USC
(17:34):
just ran the ball all over you, you're in trouble.
And if you couldn't really generate a lot of offense
against the USC defense that got embarrassed against Illinois on
the road, UH, that's I mean, you should be able
to move the ball. I expect it to be a
good game. Washington's got a great running back, quarterback that
can run. It knows when to use his athleticism, it seems,
(17:56):
and when to throw the ball and play within the offense.
Speaker 4 (18:00):
Things are good, all right, you gotta go good stuff.
Where are you at this weekend?
Speaker 5 (18:04):
By the way, I am here because I have two games.
Uh so they've you know, I get a lot of
weeks off this year. But I also which I don't like,
but then they'll hit me with like two games in
a week, like three weeks in a row. And this
is one of those weeks. I have two games and
they're both gonna be done from here, it's and they're
(18:26):
one of them is really good. The other one I
like just as much. But UNLV at Boise, which is
the Mountain West game of the year, yep. And then
New Mexico hosting Nevada, who's really struggling. But I very
much liked that coach who I believe was at Washington,
Jeff Choate.
Speaker 4 (18:44):
Yes, he was coach Peterson's defensive line coach.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
Yeah, he's the one.
Speaker 4 (18:50):
He's the one that turned Will Disney from a defensive
lineman to a tight end and he made the NFL
because of that.
Speaker 3 (18:57):
Yeah, get out of here.
Speaker 2 (18:59):
Phenomenal.
Speaker 4 (19:00):
By the way, you know what hit hit choke with that,
and you'll sound like you know what the hell you're
talking about.
Speaker 3 (19:05):
Hit choke with it.
Speaker 5 (19:05):
I'm gonna hit you with it on FS one Saturday night. Bitch,
you better give me credit.
Speaker 3 (19:10):
All right?
Speaker 2 (19:10):
Yeah, Petrus, you're the man. We love you.
Speaker 3 (19:13):
It sounded like a frat boy.
Speaker 2 (19:16):
Enjoy the weekend.
Speaker 4 (19:17):
Yeah, okay, we'll talk in a week.
Speaker 2 (19:21):
See you, man, I love you, all right.

How are you man?
Speaker 7 (20:28):
I'm good? Thanks?
Speaker 3 (20:28):
How you guys?
Speaker 6 (20:29):
Good? Good, good good.
Speaker 4 (20:31):
Lots to talk about on the field off the field.
Let's start with off the field and this equity deal
that you've been writing about for the last couple of
days that will bring a lot of.
Speaker 6 (20:41):
Money to the Big Ten.
Speaker 4 (20:42):
But apparently now there's a couple teams that are maybe
fighting back on the idea. What's the latest on this
Big Ten equity deal?
Speaker 8 (20:50):
Well, I think that that it is dead, at least
in its current form. They need all eighteen schools to approve,
and USC and Michigan are holding out. Michigan's Port of
Regents had a meeting today in which they came out
clearly against. USC is staunchly against So if they do
(21:10):
end up with some kind of capital infusion or loan,
it is going to be a different version than what
they have on the table or what they had on
the table. And I think that this was the right move.
Speaker 7 (21:23):
For the Big Ten. I don't.
Speaker 8 (21:24):
I don't think it was a good deal. I think
the schools were mortgaging their future for the present. And
you know, if you're Washington, you were going to get
one hundred and ten million dollars up front, which was
going to help pay for a lot of stuff, but
you were also probably going to be on the third
tier of the Big ten payments site situation. So you know,
(21:49):
the Huskies they're missing out on In some ways they're
missing out, and I think in some ways they're benefiting.
Speaker 9 (21:55):
I was really surprised when I read that they would
be on the third tier. And it's based upon performance,
and you take a look at UB and Penn State,
they have almost identical performance over the last decade. Udub's
performance far exceeds USC's performance over the last decade. So
what is this performance based distribution model? What is it
really based on? Because it's not performance.
Speaker 8 (22:18):
Well, so there are two performance models at play. One
would have been an immediate distribution of two point four
billion dollars that was going to be tiered, and Washington
was on the third tier. First tier Michigan, Ohio State,
Penn State, second tier, USC Oregon, third tier, Washington and
(22:41):
everyone else.
Speaker 7 (22:43):
I don't know exactly how they came up with that.
Speaker 3 (22:46):
The other.
Speaker 8 (22:48):
Distribution model they were going to implement was going to
be for annual payments from the media rights, and there
was going to be a performance based component to that
as well, with postseason TV ratings, wins and losses, that
kind of thing. So there's two different models, and I
(23:10):
know that the first one, the injection of cash, Washington
was on the third tier.
Speaker 4 (23:15):
Yeah, yeah, Well, John Wilner is with us, and let's
just stay with the off the field theme. We're gonna
break this up and I get a quick break in
a minute, John, have you back on next segment as well.
So we've planned to talk about with the off the
field stuff. I gotta tell you, I am such a
mess this week with the Mariners. I thought Jonathan Smith
already got fired at Michigan State, and apparently he has
not yet been fired, because I'm reading a story where
(23:36):
tom Izzo is begging Michigan State fans to have some
patients with Jonathan So how much hot water is he
truly in at Michigan State.
Speaker 8 (23:46):
Yeah, it's getting bad, and it's kind of a compounding
situation or cascading situation. Penn State just fired a coach
who won thirteen games last year, right, Luke is on
the hot seat at Wisconsin, so that it kind of
is almost like a permission structure for other schools to
(24:06):
start getting rid of their coaches. And I think Michigan
State's oh to three in the Big Ten. This is
Smith's second year. They're going in the wrong direction and
fans are fans are upset, and you know what, I
kind of don't blame him. I thought this was a
bad move for Jonathan Smith from the get go, and
we'll see how it plays out.
Speaker 9 (24:27):
Signetti just got a massive deal to stay in Bloomington.
Is that better for the Big Ten that you've got
a really good coach in one of their you know,
moribon programs, or would it have been better for the
Big Ten if one of their high profile programs got
a great coach Because now penns they could still get
a crappy coach.
Speaker 7 (24:47):
They could. Yeah, that's an interesting question.
Speaker 8 (24:50):
I kind of think it's better for the Big Ten
to have Indian Hymn State Indiana and then be highly
competitive because if he leaves, there's a chance they fall
off the cliff. Whereas even if Penn State doesn't hire
an elite coach, they're still gonna be good.
Speaker 7 (25:07):
Right, the floor is much higher for Penn State than
it is for Indiana.
Speaker 8 (25:11):
So in that regard, I and then you think about,
you know, playoff bids and you want to have quality depth,
I think the Big ten's probably better off with him
staying there.
Speaker 4 (25:22):
Yeah, well, looking at Penn State, excuse me, they've won
ten games or more one two, three, four, five six
seven of the last nine seasons ten years. Sorry, yeah,
down there. All of those were obviously all with James Franklin.
But you know, Joe Paterno, Bill O'Brien got fired after
going eight and four and seven and five. But I guess,
I guess my question would be this, John, because here
(25:43):
we got a guy in Jetfish who's got a big.
Speaker 6 (25:46):
Game this Saturday versus Michigan.
Speaker 4 (25:47):
Right, he's obviously a guy that's moved around a lot.
Speaker 6 (25:50):
There's no doubt. And Rick new Heizel was on the
air with us.
Speaker 4 (25:53):
He says, look, you know they're gonna have to just
match whatever it costs to keep the guy.
Speaker 6 (25:57):
Are There are there too many.
Speaker 4 (25:59):
Jobs open around college football that are a big enough
draw where for lack of a better term, it's gonna
be really difficult for you, dub to talk Jetfish into
staying if he wants to leave for one of these
big jobs, like potentially Florida, like potentially Penn State, if
they want him.
Speaker 8 (26:17):
Yeah, Florida, his alma monter could open this weekend. Billion
Napier might get fired on Saturday night or Sunday. I
think there's a chance, especially if Washington continues.
Speaker 7 (26:28):
Tracking for a really good season.
Speaker 8 (26:30):
Yeah, I do think there's a chance he's he's gonna
have some some offers.
Speaker 7 (26:34):
There's no doubt about that.
Speaker 8 (26:35):
And he's gettable partly because he likes to move around,
but also his buyout is not very much right, Like,
even if somebody wanted Dan Lanning.
Speaker 7 (26:47):
It's a massive cost to get Dan Lanning.
Speaker 8 (26:49):
I don't off the top of my head, I don't remember,
but it's tens of millions to get Dan Lanning. Jetfish's
buyout is easily manageable for any big school. So that's
another piece that Washington has to deal with. And the
Huskies have got you know, as we've discussed in the past,
they've got some financial stresses, right. The stadium debt is
(27:13):
part of it. The half share status in the Big
Ten is part of it. And those are reasons why
Washington was very intrigued by getting that capital infusion from
the Big Ten. But ultimately it might just be an
institutional decision. Are we willing to pay Jed Fish ten
eleven twelve million dollars for five six years to keep him?
Speaker 9 (27:33):
You mentioned a name for the Oregon State job that
I thought was a ghost and disappeared into the ether.
Speaker 6 (27:39):
Nick Rolovich, Yeah.
Speaker 9 (27:40):
Why do you think you could be a good fit
in Corvallis?
Speaker 7 (27:45):
Well?
Speaker 6 (27:45):
I think Rollo is.
Speaker 8 (27:46):
A very good offensive coach and the politics of why
he left Washington State are kind of over and the
Beavers cannot risk hiring somebody who hasn't been a head
coach and hasn't one, and Rollo one at Hawaii, you know,
and that is kind of the new level for Oregon State,
(28:07):
right high level, Old Mountain West is gonna be kind
of what Oregon State is in the new pac twelve.
Speaker 7 (28:15):
So he wanted Hawaii.
Speaker 8 (28:16):
He's a good offensive coach, he knows the Pacific Northwest.
He's not gonna have a big learning curve which they
cannot afford. I just think it makes any take the job.
I just think it makes a lot of sense. They
cannot risk somebody who you know, hasn't been a head
coach before, hasn't won before.
Speaker 4 (28:36):
Yeah, John, give me a favor. All right, hold tight,
we're gonna keep it through the break. Go grab yourself
at a soda or a cracker or something whatever you
snack on down there, and we'll come back and talk
more about some of the coaching moves happening in some
of the games this weekend. John Wilner More with him
next on ninety three to three KJRFM.
Speaker 1 (28:53):
Now back to Football fridaye sponsored by Tito's Handmade Vodka
on your home for the NFL Sports Radio ninety three
point three.
Speaker 6 (29:02):
kJ r FL.
Speaker 4 (29:04):
All right, we're back on a busy, busy Friday right
here on ninety three three KJRFM. John Wilner rejoins us
here on the radio show. We'll get to Wilner's winner
in a matter of minutes. Came came close, but no,
And I'm being slightly sarcastic because Arizona State got destroyed
by Utah over the weekend, they did not know John
to be fair, have their starting quarterback correct.
Speaker 7 (29:26):
That is true.
Speaker 8 (29:26):
Sam Levitt was ruled out of the game after I
made the selection, and I certainly would never have done
it if I had known. But he was on the
injury list early in the week, middle week as probable
and then got downgraded.
Speaker 4 (29:39):
Well, we'll get to your winner here in a minute,
but let's go to some of the games this weekend.
I'll start with U dub in Michigan, man, And I
don't know. I mean, if you Dub is ever gonna
go to Michigan and get a win, This kind of
feels like maybe.
Speaker 6 (29:50):
The weekend to do it.
Speaker 4 (29:51):
What would your confidence that will be in the Husky
is grabbing a win in Ann Arbor on Saturday.
Speaker 7 (29:57):
Hi, I think they're gonna win.
Speaker 8 (30:00):
It's just the right situation for them. And I don't
think Michigan's that good. But you know that's where it starts.
This is not the Michigan team they faced when was
it like three or four years ago in ann Arbor?
Speaker 3 (30:15):
Right, twenty twenty.
Speaker 7 (30:16):
They are twenty twenty.
Speaker 8 (30:18):
They are pretty good on defense and pretty good on offense.
And I think Washington can go in there and win this.
And there's not one particular reason I have. It's just
a feeling. Sometimes you get that feeling like there's gonna
be an upset or a twist, and I just I
like the Oskies chances a lot to win the game.
Speaker 4 (30:39):
Outright, Yeah, let me correct myself. It was actually twenty
twenty one because it was Jimmy Lake. You got destroyed
by Mike McDonald's defense, and that's the yame. They didn't quit,
by the way, that's it. Dick Brid's like I've had
enough and he was out. That was his last road
trip with us. So yeah, correct, twenty twenty one.
Speaker 9 (30:56):
Go ahead, So Jonathan was interesting, Yeah, go ahead.
Speaker 8 (31:00):
No, I was gonna say they couldn't move the ball.
I think it's gonna be the opposite situation. I think
that they are gonna have a lot of success going
up and down the field on Michigan.
Speaker 9 (31:08):
John, I was looking at the you know, I was
playing around with that playoff predictor on on the web. Yeah,
it's and it said if the Huskies win either the
Oregon or the Michigan game and when out the games
they're supposed to win, they're at over seventy chance to
make the college football playoffs. Do you agree that a
(31:29):
ten and two Washington team with either a loss to
Michigan or Oregon and a lost Ohio State should be
that high odds to make the college football playoffs.
Speaker 8 (31:45):
I think that their odds are better if they beat
Oregon because I don't think Michigan. I don't think Michigan's
gonna be ranked at the end of the season.
Speaker 7 (31:54):
I really don't.
Speaker 8 (31:54):
I think Michigan's seven and five, eight and four, And
you know, the committee, they liked that metric wins against
ranked teams, and so what the Huskies need is they
need to beat Oregon or they need to beat Michigan
and then start rooting for Michigan to finish in the
top twenty five.
Speaker 7 (32:13):
They're not going to get in.
Speaker 8 (32:15):
I don't think if they have two losses and no
wins over ranked teams, I don't think they'll get in.
Speaker 6 (32:20):
Yeah, that's the thing. They could be ten and two
and not have one.
Speaker 4 (32:23):
Westerman, UCLA, Perdue, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois. None of those teams
are ranked right now and then, so I mean, how
often does a ten and two Big Ten team get
left out anyway?
Speaker 6 (32:35):
And then how often does a ten and two Big Ten.
Speaker 4 (32:37):
Team get there by not having a win over a
ranked team?
Speaker 6 (32:39):
Did Illinois beat a ranked team a year ago when.
Speaker 7 (32:42):
They went to take Indiana?
Speaker 3 (32:44):
Yeah? Did they?
Speaker 8 (32:45):
No, that's the thing, that's the relevant com Indiana was
eleven to one and they did not have a win
over a ranked team.
Speaker 7 (32:51):
But they only have one loss.
Speaker 8 (32:52):
To Ohio State, right and the committee is just obsessed
with the number of losses as we've seen. I think
if Washington is ten and two with no wins over
ranked teams, it's gonna be dicey.
Speaker 6 (33:05):
Do you think they are going ten and two?
Speaker 4 (33:09):
And you just said you think they're gonna beat Michigan Saturday?
Speaker 6 (33:11):
Yes, u c l A, Perduer Illinois. So who do
they lose to?
Speaker 7 (33:19):
I think they're gonna lose in Pasadena?
Speaker 4 (33:23):
Wow, Cherry freaking new weird, weird things happened down there, man, weird.
Speaker 7 (33:29):
U c l A has got good players.
Speaker 8 (33:31):
I mean, if you had asked me before the season
what you sel his record, I'd say probably like five.
Speaker 7 (33:36):
And seven ish.
Speaker 8 (33:37):
You know it, just they played so poorly early on
it kind of masked the actual talent there.
Speaker 4 (33:46):
All right, John, before you go, this is where really
white people tune in. Honestly, nobody really gives a damn
about your analysis, to be honest with you, is one your.
Speaker 6 (33:56):
Picks and won your picks.
Speaker 4 (33:57):
So you you lost on Arizona State, but as you said,
they were down there starting quarterback for in Sam Leonards.
Speaker 6 (34:03):
So who do you like this week for Wilner's winner?
Speaker 8 (34:05):
Give us a winner, Bobby Well, I mean, I do
like Washington win outright, but I will I will try to,
you know, uh, broaden.
Speaker 7 (34:13):
My scope here with the pick itself. I will take
the Ducks.
Speaker 8 (34:17):
I think they're gonna pummel Rutgers as as you guys saw,
Ruckers has no defense, and I think Oregon's gonna go
there pissed off without losing, and they're gonna put forty
or fifty up on the Scarlet Knights.
Speaker 6 (34:31):
Gotcha, I totally agree.
Speaker 8 (34:32):
But I also, for the record, Dick, I have got
to tell you I already feel like a winner.
Speaker 7 (34:38):
Because I got to watch.
Speaker 8 (34:39):
The Washington Rutgers game in the booth with the Husky
Hanks watching Softy up close, trying he was trying to
pay attention to the football game, but he was glued
to the baseball game on the screen, and he was
just a giant knot.
Speaker 7 (34:56):
And it was incredible theater.
Speaker 6 (34:58):
Somebody who said, everybody else in the stadium.
Speaker 9 (35:01):
I mean, look at everybody was in the concourse, John,
Nobody was in their seats.
Speaker 7 (35:04):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it was That was something else.
Speaker 4 (35:07):
You were almost there when the old man meeting me
had a stroke. You came that close to seeing it
live in person. So all right, John Wiler with us,
We will get a break. Hugh Miller gonna join Big
Game on Monday night. Huge thoughts on you, Dub Michigan.
He knows a thing or two about winning in that stadium.
Speaker 3 (35:23):
Dick.
Speaker 6 (35:23):
We'll chat with you next on ninety three three KJRFM
